There are bleeding-edge technologies that promise to one day free us from not only having to find a power outlet when we start panicking about a device’s dying battery, but cords and cables altogether. Ossia’s Cota technology, for example, can wirelessly deliver power to electronics the same way wifi delivers internet to your phone and computer. But a practical mass rollout of such a system is still years away.The reality is that cords, plugs, and physical power outlets will be with us for many decades to come, so even the smallest of improvements or innovations that make plugging in our gear less of a hassle are welcome. The surprisingly useful addition of a simple LED torch to its plug isn’t the only thing that makes Stella a worthwhile upgrade; Ten One Design’s execution is nearly-perfect.

(Photo: Andrew Liszewski/Gizmodo)The $35 (£27) cable, which is currently only available in the US, but fingers crossed it comes to the UK soon, is designed to replace the section of cord that connects your laptop’s power brick to a wall outlet, and is currently available in versions for both Apple and PC laptops—but a compatibility double-check may be a good plan if you’re buying the Stella for a non-MacBook device.I tested the Stella with an older MacBook Pro, and swapping out the brick’s standard power cord for Ten One Design’s upgrade was as simple. The Stella does look a little different than the power cord Apple includes with its MacBooks; trading a thick rubber sheathing for a braided nylon shell. But I much prefer how the Stella looks, and the braided cable is actually more flexible, so it’s easier to wind around the power brick when cable wrangling.


Despite the extra tech, the Stella’s plug is still small enough to easily squeeze into a crowded power bar. The business-end of the Stella—the part that actually plugs into an outlet—is only just slightly bulkier than Apple’s. But it can still easily squeeze into a crowded power bar, and Ten One Design has made the braided cord exit the plug at a 45-degree angle which the company claims will help reduce stress and damage at the connection point.It looks like a perfectly normal electrical plug, but inside the Stella is additional hardware similar to what you’d find inside a non-contact voltage tester, tools electricians use to detect the presence of a live wire without actually having to touch it by detecting the surrounding electrical field. The Stella incorporates a simplified version of this technology to automatically activate an LED when power is detected. It’s not quite as sensitive as the tool an electrician would use, but I found it was able to detect a power outlet from as far as a couple of inches.



The Stella uses a non-replaceable battery to power its low-energy LED that Ten One Design claims will work for at least a decade—well past the life of any laptop. But while the LED is certainly bright enough to illuminate an outlet when it’s a couple of inches away, it’s in no way usable as a torch. You’ll want to treat it more as a last mile tool (or in this case, a last inches tool) that can save you from having to blindly try to jam a plug into an outlet in the dark, but you’ll need to know where that outlet is first.Is the Stella a must-have upgrade? If your laptop spends its entirely life sitting in one place, then the answer is no. But if your laptop never leaves your side, joining you on business trips and hotel stays where you’re constantly plugging and unplugging your computer into strange and different places, then there’s a strong case to be made for the upgrade. But I actually run into this problem far more often with my iPhone’s charging cable, so if Ten One Design ever manages to squeeze a smart LED into that tiny wall wart, I’ll be first in line with my credit card.


The Surface Go is a super portable 2-in-1 that's great as a second go-anywhere machine. Unfortunately, battery life isn't great and once you've added the accessories it's not cheap. But for a portable machine there's little else to take it on.

Few companies have produced affordable Windows devices that are firstly desirable and secondly portable. So Microsoft has decided it's time to step into the ring with the Surface Go: an entry-level 2-in-1 to the Surface range, sitting below the Surface Pro.The Go is a full Windows 10 laptop-tablet hybrid, albeit in Windows 10 S Mode. It's affordable, at £379 ($399), but if you want a full-fat experience then you'll need to buy the £100 Type Cover (backlit and available in black, platinum, burgundy or blue) and £100 Surface Pen stylus separately. That takes it to £579, which means it's potentially more expensive than an iPad with Apple Pencil and a Bluetooth keyboard (not iPad Pro).



While the back of the Surface Go is attractive in that familiar Surface way with its integrated kickstand, there's a problem: the front bezels are massive. It's a shame because the 10-inch PixelSense display is better than many in this class, but it looks a bit out of date straight out of the gate.As a tablet, the Go weighs just 522g, making it highly portable. You'll find yourself placing it in a folder, sleeve or folio to carry it round as it's not hugely different in footprint to an A4 sheet of paper. It's around 8mm thick, enabling it to be slotted into small gaps in baggage with ease. It's portability that is the Go's main strength, as its name suggests.We've always been fans of the Surface kickstand, but like other 2-in-1s the Surface Go does present usability problems with its optional Type Cover keyboard attached. Firstly, train or airline tables offer limited, thus the keyboard is often stuck out from the table and isn't stable. Secondly, it just isn't that good to work with on your lap. In an ideal world nobody would be hunched over a computing device on their lap. But the real world isn't like that and if you regularly work at conferences or on public transport you'll probably be much better off with a laptop.


There are two Surface Go configurations, which differ in terms of the RAM (4GB vs 8GB) and storage (64GB vs 128GB). Whether that is enough for you to buy the pricier model (it's an extra £130) depends on what tasks you'll need the Surface Go to handle. This isn't a primary device in our opinion unless you're going to be doing browsing, typing and emailing.The processor inside the Surface Go has an interesting name – Pentium Gold. With Intel's prevalent Core i3, i5, i7 and i9 branding it's easy to forget that Intel still makes Pentium processors. The silly thing about the nomenclature is that modern Pentium processors bear no relation to their predecessors and is part of the Kaby Lake series of chips introduced at the start of 2017. They slot in between the super-basic Celeron line-up and the Core m3 (used in the Apple MacBook) and Core i3 series.


We weren't expecting the Surface Go to perform that well and in terms of pure grunt it doesn't have a lot. But Windows 10 is fairly easy going on most devices and the Surface Go is no exception. OK, so it was a little tardy installing some Windows Updates and a couple of apps but otherwise it was absolutely fine for everyday use including editing photos and running numerous apps simultaneously.Surface devices are supposed to offer the latest specs, although they have been weirdly slow to move to USB-C and dump proprietary adapters. The Go has a headphone jack and USB-C port but, alas, Microsoft has stuck with the proprietary Surface connector for charging. We'd expect this to change for a secondary USB-C in a later version, which would make all the difference in terms of connectivity. There is, however, a microSD card reader under the kickstand, which is potentially handy (although it does mean photographers wanting to use the Surface Go for simple photo edits will need to use a microSD card and adapter in their camera).

The device is a mid-range 6.3-inch gaming-stationed smartphone, which has already been launched in the China and India markets. Being a midrange device, the Honor Play offers very good value and sports impressive specifications such as a Kirin 970 chipset paired with a 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. The device comes with a Turbo GPU for better graphics rendering and higher FPS. The Honor Play is backed by a 3,750mAh battery and supports fast charging.


Huawei also launched the latest Huawei Mate 20 Lite, a new midrange smartphone IFA 2018. The company said that its latest smartphone chipset, the Kirin 980, will power the upcoming flagship-graded Huawei phones.HTC unveiled its midrange smartphone, the HTC U12 Life. The device comes with decent specifications and may be a game changer for HTC in the smartphone segment as the company has been struggling to launch a budget-friendly device with impressive specifications.BlackBerry unveiled an all-new variant of the Key 2 handset as the Key 2 LE. As per the company, the Key 2 LE is a less expensive yet colorful handset that will retail for $519 for the 32GB variant and $599 for the 64GB version. The device comes in three colors options — slate, champagne, and atomic.


Laptop and PC makers from all over the world took the opportunity to launch a wide array of products at IFA 2018. A variety of laptops and various PC peripherals such as gaming accessories, graphics cards, smart displays, and more were launched at the event.Acer unveiled a lineup of products including laptops, monitors, and other PC peripherals. The company launched an all-new Acer Swift 5 laptop, which it claims to be the world’s lightest 15-inch notebook. The device is made up of magnesium-lithium alloy body giving it strength and robustness while staying light. The laptop comes in configurable options and is available in both i5 and i7 processor-powered variants. A 14-inch variant of the Acer Swift 5 was also launched.The company also refreshed its existing Aspire 3, 5, and 7 series of laptops with the latest components and all these notebooks will now be available in the latest eighth-generation of Intel core processors with support for Intel Optane memory. All these models will be available for users in Europe to buy starting in December.


Acer also unveiled a new Chromebook, which comes with a 14-inch screen in an aluminum chassis. Dubbed the Chromebook 514, this new device from Acer is claimed to offer a battery life of up to 12 hours on a single charge.Dell refreshed its entire 7000 series of convertible 2-in-1 laptops with the latest eighth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors. It has also managed to place the webcam in the right slot despite the narrow bezels. This is something the company has been struggling to achieve even in its flagship-graded XPS series of laptops.The company has also revamped its Inspiron 5000 series of 14-inch laptops with the latest processors and all these laptops will also feature Amazon’s Alexa as well as the Dell’s proprietary Mobile Connect software.



Lenovo unveiled a latest 2-in-1 laptop, the Yoga C930, in its flagship division. The laptop comes with a 13.9-inch 4K touch-sensitive display and comes along with Dolby Atmos speakers for multimedia purposes. The device is configured with the eighth generation of Intel Core processors paired with up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM and 2TB of SSD.The company also launched the Yoga Book C930, a 10.8-inch laptop with dual screens. The primary display on the device comes with a resolution of 2560x1600-pixel IPS LCD display and the secondary display is a multifunctional 1920x1080 pixel e-ink screen instead of a keyboard and trackpad.Phillips has come up with a range of large monitors that it showcased at IFA 2018. The huge Philips 499P9H served as a center of attention with its super-wide curved screen measuring an immense 49 inches. The company also showcased its range of other ultra-slim frameless monitors, including the 276C8, 278E9Q, and the 328E9F monitors, which offer an edgeless design for a better viewing experience.


The company also came up with its all-new Momentum series of monitors exclusively meant for gamers. The Philips Momentum 436M6VBPAB monitor is the first in the Momentum series and offers a 4K resolution along with Quantum Dot technology. The display also features adaptive sync, a 4ms response time, and Philips Ambiglow lighting for a better, clearer, and sharper viewing experience.Apart from these major launches, several other brands including Logitech and Qualcomm launched PC accessories and peripherals at the event.In terms of smartphones and laptops, most of the major companies at IFA 2018 announced the availability of their existing lineup of products in the European market instead of launching new products, which is rather disappointing.

We actually think the XPS 13 and XPS 15 have trackpads that rank among the best. Both are glass-smooth and are correctly sized so we rarely, rarely ever have palm rejection issues. While the keyboards look the same, the keys on the smaller XPS 13 are actually larger than the keys on the larger XPS 15. Let’s say that again: The keys on the XPS 13 are 16.1mm wide, while the keys on the XPS 15 are 14.7mm wide. That may not sound like much, but we’ve long felt the keys on the XPS are just a smidge smaller than we’d like. We embrace the slightly larger XPS 13’s keys.Beyond how luxuriously great a 15.6-inch screen feels next to a 13.3-inch, we don’t have to say much about how great it is to slip a tiny, 2.7-pound laptop into your bag rather than a 4.5-pound laptop. Motorola unveiled two Android One-powered smartphones — the Motorola One and Motorola One Power. Both handsets sport a similar design with a notch. The Motorola One has a 5.9-inch Full HD+ display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with a 6GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage, which can, however, be further expanded via a microSD card.


The Motorola One Power, on the other hand, has a 6.2-inch IPS LCD display with a 19:9 aspect ratio and HD+ resolution. The device comes with a Snapdragon 636 chipset and has two storage variants — 3GB + 32GB and 4GB + 64GB storage. Pricing of both these phones is yet to the announced by the company.
Sony announced its latest flagship device, the Xperia XZ3. Xperia XZ3 comes with an unconventional curved display design and has the potential to be the most exciting launch by Sony in many years. The device sports a 6-inch OLED curved display with a resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels. The ZX3 is the company’s latest device to use high-resolution television technology for a smartphone’s display. Under the hood, the device has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset paired with a 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. The device will run the latest Android P out of the box and comes with a 3,330mAH battery.

age und schreibe drei iPhone-Modelle hat Apple 2017 herausgebracht. Obwohl das iPhone X den größten Wow-Effekt und das iPhone 8 Plus das größte Gehäuse hat, bleibt das normale iPhone 8 spannend. Denn: Hier findet man die meisten technischen Neuerungen der 2017er-iPhone-Flotte – und das in einem handlichen Gehäuse sowie zu einem vergleichsweise niedrigen Preis, der weiter fällt. Lohnt sich der Kauf? COMPUTER BILD macht den Test.

Drei Jahre lang begnügte man sich in Cupertino mit dem iPhone-6-Design, führte in dieser Zeit nur winzige Änderungen durch. Kein Wunder, dass das Android-Lager Geräte mit deutlich modernerem Aussehen bot. Schon die Vorderseite des iPhone 7 zeigte vergleichsweise anteilig recht wenig Display, dafür oben und unten einen dicken Gehäuserand. Zumindest im neuen Premium-Gerät iPhone X änderte sich das. Apples Top-Modell kommt nahezu ohne Rand aus und verzichtet deshalb etwa auf den Fingerabdrucksensor. Beim iPhone 8 bleibt weitestgehend alles beim Alten – möglicherweise ein Grund für das zum Start offenbar verhaltene Käuferinteresse: Die neue Version ist quasi die S-Variante des iPhone 7.


Den Zusatz streicht Apple in diesem Jahr einfach aus seinem Katalog und springt direkt auf die nächsthöhere Zahl. Anders als beim iPhone 7 besteht die Rückseite des iPhone 8 aus Glas – das sieht edel aus und das Gerät liegt angenehm in der Hand. Interessant: Im Frühling stellten die Kalifornier die „Product Red Special Edition“ vor. Der einzige Unterschied zu den normalen Modellen: Das iPhone 8 kommt in knalligem Rot daher und ist – anders als beim roten iPhone 7 – auf der Vorderseite in Schwarz gehalten. In echt sieht das Ferrari-Rot beeindruckend aus. Je nach Lichteinfall schimmert es in edlem Bordeaux- oder dunklem Blutrot. Die Preise bleiben gleich: Die Sonderedition beginnt ab 799 Euro.



Das Display des iPhone 8 ist 4,7 Zoll groß und bietet die bekannte Retina-Auflösung (1334x750 Pixel). Auch wenn Apple die gleichen Kontrastwerte für das iPhone 7 und iPhone 8 angibt, zeigen die Laborwerte: Das iPhone 8 hat mit 1154:1 einen höheren Kontrast als das iPhone 7 (900:1). Insgesamt ist dieser auf dem Smartphone-Markt allerdings nur durchschnittlich. So hat das Samsung Galaxy Note 8 einen Kontrastwert von 17034:1 aufgrund des verbauten AMOLED-Bildschirms. Ein ähnliches Bildschirmsystem wie beim Note 8 kommt beim iPhone X zum Einsatz – entsprechend fallen die Kontrastwerte im Vergleich zum iPhone 8 und iPhone 8 Plus drastisch besser aus und bieten ein sattes Schwarz. Bei der Farbtreue hat sich ebenso etwas getan: Statt 98 (iPhone 7) erreicht das iPhone 8 98,2 Prozentpunkte. Wie das iPad Pro stattet Apple das iPhone 8 mit dem True-Tone-Display aus, das Farben noch natürlicher darstellen soll. Die Gesamtnote des iPhone-8-Bildschirms liegt bei 1,95.



Die ersten Beschwerden kamen schon vor Weihnachten, doch erst danach kam ans Licht: Der Blitz im iPhone 8 mag die Kälte nicht. Ist es für einige Zeit niedrigen Temperaturen unter etwa 7 Grad ausgesetzt, funktioniert der Blitz nicht mehr. Entsprechende Berichte gab es unter anderem im Apple-Support-Forum. COMPUTER BILD wollte der Sache auf den Grund gehen und hat eine Reihe von Handys für 15 Minuten in den Kühlschrank (7 ºC) gelegt. Anschließend aktivierten die Tester in der Kamera-App den Blitz und schossen ein Foto im Dunkeln. Ergebnis: Während iPhone 7 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S8, Huawei Mate 9 und OnePlus 5T wie gewünscht ein Foto mit aktivierter Blitz-Beleuchtung machten, blieb der Blitz beim iPhone 8, 8 Plus und iPhone X dunkel! Immerhin: Nach rund 30 Sekunden in warmer Umgebung, etwa in der Hosentasche, funktionierte der Blitz wieder wie gewünscht. Das bedeutet: Wer sein iPhone im Winter nicht direkt am Körper bei sich trägt, verzichtet auf Fotos mit Blitz an kalten Tagen. Erstaunlich: Laut Apple sollte das iPhone bei Temperaturen über null ºC funktionieren, genauer im vorgesehenen Betriebstemperaturbereich zwischen 0 ºC und 35 ºC, wie Apple in einem Support-Dokument mitteilte.



Trotz gleich gebliebener 12-Megapixel-Auflösung hat sich die Kamera verändert, bietet etwa einen größeren Fotosensor. Dank des schnellen A11-Chips erkennt die Kamera Bewegungen, Beleuchtungsverhältnisse und Gesichter schon vor der Aufnahme und passt die Fotoeinstellungen entsprechend an. Das Ergebnis überzeugt: Bei Tageslicht lieferte das iPhone 8 im Test eine deutlich bessere Fotoqualität. Bei wenig Licht ist die Kamera immerhin genauso ordentlich wie die des iPhone 7. Foto-Fans aber sollten zum Plus-Modell greifen, denn nur hier gibt es die Dual-Kamera mit Tele-Objektiv. Auf den optischen Zoom verzichtet das iPhone 8 also – genau wie auf mit der Dual-Kamera zusammenhängende Funktionen wie den Porträt-Fotomodus und Tiefenschärfe-Effekte. Insgesamt bringt es das iPhone 8 auf eine Teilnote von 2,35 bei Tageslicht – das iPhone 7 bekam eine 2,68. Auf Wunsch filmt das Smartphone in 4K – wahlweise mit 24, 30 oder 60 Bildern pro Sekunde. Zeitlupenvideos nimmt es mit 240 Bildern in Full-HD-Auflösung auf; beim iPhone 7 war dies nur mit einer 720p-Auflösung möglich. Die Schärfe der Videoaufnahmen überzeugte im Labor-Test: Die abgefilmten Linienpaare weisen keine Ungenauigkeiten auf, das Bild ist also knackscharf. Insgesamt bringt es das iPhone 8 auf eine Kamera-Note von 2,26.

Wie bei den vorangegangenen S-Versionen setzt Apple beim iPhone 8 in erster Linie auf ein Prozessor-Upgrade. So hält der neue A11-Bionic-Chip zusammen mit einem hauseigenen Grafikprozessor Einzug ins Handy. Dass das neue iPhone schneller ist, war schon kurz nach der Vorstellung klar. Der COMPUTER BILD-Labor-Test zeigt: In Sachen Leistung schlägt das iPhone 8 Samsungs Galaxy S8 deutlich. So ist es insgesamt doppelt so schnell, was sich nicht nur in Benchmark-Werten nachweisen lässt, sondern ebenso spürbar im Praxis-Test auffiel: bei dem Öffnen von Apps, der Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit beim Bedienen, aber auch dem Bearbeiten von Fotos und Videos sowie weiteren Faktoren. Ergebnis: Das iPhone 8 kassiert beim Bedientest mit einer Note von 1,69 ein sehr gutes Ergebnis.



Große Überraschung: Beim iPhone 8 ist der Akku im Vergleich zum iPhone 7 nicht etwa größer, sondern kleiner ausgefallen. So stattet Apple sein aktuelles 4,7-Zoll-Smartphone mit einem 1.821-Milliamperestunden-Akku aus, beim Vorgänger waren es 1.960 Milliamperestunden. Das Ergebnis verändert die Akkulaufzeit nicht drastisch, allerdings läuft das iPhone 8 in der Tat etwas kürzer als das iPhone 7. So ermittelte der Labor-Test eine Laufzeit von 10:36 Stunden bei typischer Nutzung und 30:50 Stunden bei geringer Nutzung. Beim iPhone 7 lagen diese Werte noch bei 10:57 Stunden beziehungsweise 32:02 Stunden. Das verschlechtert die Akku-Note um 0,09 Notenpunkte, womit es das iPhone 8 auf eine Akku-Note von 2,79 bringt. Besonders: Apples neues Handy lässt sich erstmals drahtlos laden. Praktisch: Apple setzt auf den gängigen Qi-Ladestandard. Damit sind Freunde des drahtlosen Ladens nicht auf die Apple-eigenen Ladestationen eingeschossen, sondern laden auch an den immer häufiger vertretenen Drahtlos-Ladestationen in Cafés und hippen Schnellrestaurants. Ladestationen gibt es zudem von diversen Herstellern wie IKEA, Belkin und Mophie.

Zur offiziellen Vorstellung gab Apple gewohnt wenige Informationen zum Akku im iPhone XR heraus – lediglich, dass er eineinhalb Stunden länger durchhalten soll als der des iPhone 8 Plus. Beim ersten Ausprobieren war eine Beurteilung der Akku-Laufzeit nicht möglich. Immerhin liefert die chinesische Zulassungsbehörde TENAA detaillierte Angaben zum Energielieferanten des Geräts. Demnach steckt im iPhone XR ein 2.942-Milliamperestunden-Akku. COMPUTER BILD ermittelte im Labor für das iPhone XS eine Akkukapazität von 2.658 Milliamperestunden, der schwarze Klotz im XS Max kommt auf 3.174 Milliamperestunden. Im Vergleich zu den anderen neuen Modellen hält das XR laut Apple am längsten durch. Das erscheint durchaus logisch: Schließlich dürfte die leicht abgespeckte Technik weitaus weniger Saft ziehen. Besonders das leistungsschwächere Display sollte einen wesentlich sparsameren Verbrauch ermöglichen.


Auf der Rückseite des iPhone XR sitzt keine Dual-Kamera wie bei den anderen iPhone-Neuheiten, sondern eine einzelne Weitwinkel-Knipse mit 12 Megapixeln und f/1.8-Blende. Abstriche muss man sonst aber nicht machen: Sie entspricht der Weitwinkel-Kamera in den anderen beiden neuen iPhones. Größere und tiefere Pixel verbessern laut Apple die Bildqualität bei schlechten Lichtverhältnissen, was sich beim Praxis-Test bei viel Kunstlicht nicht wirklich einschätzen ließ. Neu ist auch Smart HDR: Dank der Funktion nimmt die Kamera bei jedem Foto mehrere Bilder mit unterschiedlichen Einstellungen auf und kombiniert sie zu einem Schnappschuss, der eine höhere Detailvielfalt aufweisen soll. Besonders bei sehr hellen und dunklen Flächen sowie bei Gegenlicht wertet Smart HDR die Fotos auf – das sieht toll aus! Interessant: Auch ohne zweite Rückkamera lässt sich der Bokeh-Effekt, der den Hintergrund unscharf stellt, per Software-Lösung auf Bilder anwenden. Die Tiefenschärfe lässt sich nachträglich noch verändern – das funktionierte im Praxis-Test gut. Auf der Frontseite des iPhone XR befindet sich die gleiche duale Frontkamera wie beim iPhone XS und XS Max, die aus einer 7-Megapixel-Knipse sowie einer Infrarot-Kamera für die Bildtiefe besteht – Letztere benötigt das iPhone zum Beispiel für die Gesichtserkennung Face ID.



Das iPhone XR kommt später als die beiden XS-Geschwister: Erst ab 19. Oktober lässt es sich vorbestellen, am 26. Oktober 2018 kommt es dann in den Handel. Die „günstigste” Version mit 64 GB Speicher kostet 849 Euro, die 128-GB-Variante schlägt mit 909 Euro zu Buche. Das Modell mit 256 GB wandert für 1.019 Euro über die Theke. Das iPhone XR erscheint in Weiß, Schwarz, Rot, Blau, Gelb und Koralle.

Wie der US-Journalist Mark Gurman für Bloomberg berichtet, könnte das iPhone XR zum Release nur sehr begrenzt verfügbar sein. Apple habe bei der Produktion Schwierigkeiten mit der Hintergrundbeleuchtung des LC-Displays. Außerdem gibt es Gerüchte zu Problemen bei der Fertigung des Aluminiumrahmens. Laut Gurman kann der Hersteller deshalb der hohen Nachfrage nicht gerecht werden – was ihn aber anscheinend nicht stört. Denn Apple wolle das Angebot ohnehin bewusst verknappen, um die Verkäufe der teureren Geräte iPhone XS und iPhone XS Max nicht zu reduzieren.

Foxconn nutze seinen größten Produktionsstandort in der chinesischen Stadt Zhengzhou vollständig für das neue iPhone-Modell, um der erwarteten hohen Nachfrage gerecht zu werden. Schätzungsweise 64.000 Mitarbeiter fertigen in den Werken wohl täglich 281.000 iPhones. Zuvor habe Foxconn ohne Erfolg versucht, ausschließlich Roboter bei der Produktion einzusetzen. Die Zahl der iPhones, die jeden Tag vom Band laufen, klingt zwar hoch, scheint aber nicht auszureichen: Ein zu Foxconn gehörender Zulieferer klage über eine zu geringe Ausbeute. Anscheinend macht die Produktion des Aluminiumrahmens Schwierigkeiten. Bis zum Verkaufsstart des iPhone XR will Foxconn das Problem beheben.

Die Fitbit Versa ist ein günstiger Allrounder. Sie beinhaltet Fitness-Funktionen, die sich bei anderen Fitbit-Wearables bewährt haben: exaktes Schlaftracking und automatische Sporterkennung. Mit dem Zyklus-Tracker in der angebundenen Smartphone-App liefert Fitbit eine neue Idee. Abgesehen von Musik- und Bezahlfunktionen gibt es kaum smarte Anwendungen. ie Fitbit Versa ist die zweite Smartwatch aus dem Hause Fitbit. Nachdem das Unternehmen Konkurrent Pebble übernommen hatte, kam im Herbst die Fitbit Ionic – eine Smartwatch, die aufgrund des hohen Preises und klobigen Designs nicht jedem Kunden gefiel. Mit der Fitbit Versa hat der Hersteller sich auf das Konzept von Pebble besonnen: einfach, schlank und günstig zu sein. Im Test verrät COMPUTER BILD, was die neue Fitness-Smartwatch taugt!


Die Fitbit Versa ist deutlich schlanker als ihr Vorgänger Ionic und leichter: Sie wiegt laut Hersteller 37,6 Gramm, die Tester haben ein Gewicht von 31 Gramm ermittelt. Die Form erinnert an die Apple Watch, nur ist die Versa etwas breiter. Das Display ist von einem relativ breiten Rand umgeben, der nur sichtbar wird, wenn die Uhr leuchtet. Das wiederum passiert, wenn der Nutzer sein Handgelenk bewegt oder auf einen Knopf drückt. Das in zwei Größen mitgelieferte Kunststoffarmband trägt sich angenehm, die Uhr sitzt bequem und sieht gut aus.
Der Akku hält bei durchschnittlicher Nutzung laut Hersteller vier Tage – im Test zeigte sich: Das kommt gut hin. Das Aluminiumgehäuse eignet sich zum Schwimmengehen und ist 39,36x37,65x11,23 Millimeter groß. Das LCD-Display misst in der Diagonale 3,4 Zentimeter (1,34 Zoll), löst mit 300x300 Pixeln auf und liegt unter Gorilla-Glas geschützt. Im Test reagierte es gut und schnell auf Eingaben.


Automatisch Schritte und Kalorien tracken, Sport (etwa Gehen, Laufen, Fahrradfahren, Ellipsentraining, Schwimmen, Aerobic) registrieren und den Tag über die Herzfrequenz aufzeichnen – all das kann die Fitbit Versa; wie es auch die Fitbit Ionic und andere Tracker des Unternehmens können (siehe: Fitbit-Geräte in der Übersicht). Eine Trainingsaufzeichnung lässt sich von Hand starten. In der App wählen Nutzer aus diversen Sportarten (darunter Wandern, Golf, Tennis, Yoga, Kickboxen, Pilates), welche sieben auf der Versa als Trainingsmodi zur Verfügung stehen. Dazu tippen Nutzer in der App auf das Gerät. Unter Allgemein gibt es die Option Schnelltasten für Training. Im Test hat der Pulssensor die Herzfrequenz beim Training mit 4 Prozent unter der Messung des Referenzgerätes ausgewiesen, den Verlauf aber richtig bestimmt. Auf einen eingebauten GPS-Sensor hat das Unternehmen aus Platz- und Preisgründen verzichtet – für das Aufzeichnen der Joggingroute greift die Uhr auf das Smartphone-GPS zurück.


Fitbit legt den Fokus wie gewohnt stärker auf Fitness-Features als auf smarte Funktionen. Android-Nutzer haben die Möglichkeit, auf eingehende Nachrichten per bearbeitbarer Standard-Nachricht zu antworten. Ein Mikrofon und ein Sprachassistent fehlen, über die sich die Uhr leicht fernsteuern ließe. Die Uhr ist mit einem NFC-Sensor ausgestattet und für Bezahlfunktionen vorbereitet, in Deutschland fehlt es aber bisher an Partnerbanken. Der Bluetooth-MP3-Player, den Fitbit bei der Ionic einführte, ist auch auf der Versa verfügbar. MP3-Titel lassen sich via PC synchronisieren. Künftig soll das per Smartphone über die Fitbit-App möglich sein. Die Musikwiedergabe funktioniert nicht nur mit gespeicherten Songs, sondern auch mit dem Angebot des Streaming-Anbieters Deezer. Käufer erhalten ein dreimonatiges Premium-Abonnement gratis. Bei der Einrichtung ist zu beachten, dass der Aktionscode in den Browser am Smartphone (und nicht am PC) einzugeben ist.

Some Xeon-based systems support server-style error correcting code (ECC) memory, which can detect and fix single-bit memory errors. ECC DRAM is a mainstay in applications such as financial or scientific computing, where even the slightest internal data corruption cannot be permitted. That said, a requirement for ECC RAM is outside the mainstream for most ISV apps.GPU and Display. As with gaming laptops, all but a handful of mobile workstations draw on the speed and strength of a dedicated or discrete graphics adapter rather than the integrated graphics built into the CPU. Nvidia's professional mobile graphics are found under the Quadro brand, just as AMD's are called Radeon Pro (formerly FirePro).


Though built to optimize different operations, mobile workstation GPUs give nothing away to consumer or gaming GPUs like Nvidia's GeForce line. In fact, Nvidia's professional mobile flagship at this writing, the VR-ready Quadro P5000, has more display memory (16GB versus 12GB) than the company's top desktop gaming card, the Titan Xp.A couple of mobile workstations that emphasize light weight and portability have 14-inch screens, but most measure either 15.6 or 17.3 inches diagonally. Some vendors offer both full-size and thin-and-light 15.6-inch models (the Lenovo ThinkPad P51 versus P51s, for example, or HP ZBook 15 G4 versus ZBook Studio G4), the latter trading expandability for easy transport. Full HD or 1080p (1,920x1,080) resolution is a minimum, with 4K (3,840x2,160) resolution a popular choice for graphics or animation work with room for on-screen toolbars and menus—or for 4K video editing.


Color management—making sure that what you see on screen exactly matches a finished product—is often important for the kinds of tasks expected of a high-end mobile workstation. Screens such as HP's factory-calibrated DreamColor displays come with software that lets you choose the Internet's sRGB, print's Adobe RGB, or cinema's DCI P3 palettes or color spaces. Some Lenovo systems go further by having Pantone color calibrators on board: You select a white point (typically D65 for photography or D50 for prepress and graphic design) and gamma (tone response) value, then close the lid, which puts the screen against a palm-rest sensor. A few seconds later, an audible tone indicates that the calibrator has done its work.



Storage and Extras. Mobile workstation owners work with massive data files, so mobile workstations need ample storage. That typically means one or two M.2 solid-state drives teamed with one or two hard drives, totaling as much as 3TB or 4TB (at least for larger 17.3-inch models, which will have more room in the chassis for such a spread).For still more storage capacity, nowadays we don't consider a workstation worthy of the name unless it has at least one Thunderbolt 3 port for high-speed connection to external drives and RAID arrays, as well as single or multiple high-resolution displays. If Thunderbolt 3's daisy-chaining connectivity is too much of an investment for you, a growing number of desktop docking stations use the technology to provide one-plug access to ports aplenty.


Finally, take note of the touch pad located in the palm rest south of the space bar. Many CAD and other workstation apps make use of three mouse buttons, so it's worth checking to see whether a system has a middle button instead of only the usual two.As we mentioned earlier on, HP, Dell, and Lenovo are the big dogs in the mobile workstation market. Don't confuse the companies' high-end business systems with workstations; although the term "workstation" has a generic meaning, and a simple connotation of a "PC for work," in the professional applications world it has a very specific meaning along the lines we've discussed: a high-end Core or Xeon CPU, a workstation-class Quadro or Radeon Pro graphics chipset, and ISV certification. As a result, you'll want to look specifically at the three vendors' ZBook (HP), Precision (Dell), and ThinkPad P (Lenovo) selections when comparison shopping. One other player, MSI, has also made modest inroads into mobile workstations with its MSI W series laptops; take a look at them as well.


Note that almost all workstation machines are traditional clamshells, but HP and Lenovo have experimented with workstation convertibles with their ZBook X2 (a detachable-screen model) and ThinkPad Yoga P40 (rotating 2-in-1) models, respectively. You see, I’ve always admired the design of all of Microsoft’s Surface products, but at the same time felt that they weren’t exactly for me. The keyboard cover on the Surface Pro is just too crappy to write blog posts on; the SurfaceBook, while impressively designed with its fancy detachable hinge mechanism, is simply too bulky a machine for me to port around everywhere; and as for the Surface Studio—I don’t even know what the hell I would do with it besides play a very expensive game of touchscreen tic-tac-toe.


But lo, the Surface Laptop at a glance seemed downright practical. It’s an attractive laptop in a lightweight package with solid guts and a reasonable price tag. It’s got some of that Surface design flourish without any frills that make the device impractical.After spending a year with the model that now costs $1000 (7th-generation i5, 8GB of RAM, 128GB storage), I’m still mostly enamored. There’s a lot that makes it a delight to use: A shimmering display, a lovely keyboard, sturdy build quality, and fantastic battery life. It gets 11 hours and 10 minutes when streaming a video at a specified brightness of 200 nits. That makes it one of the longest lasting laptops we’ve tested. Compared to similarly spec’d premium 2-1 machines from Dell and Lenovo, the laptop is very satisfying. Even when those laptops might get you just a little more power for your dollar.






When the laptop first launched, it shipped with Microsoft’s “light” Windows 10S operating system that only runs apps downloaded from the Microsoft Store. Microsoft offered free upgrades to regular Windows 10, but I decided to give 10S a shot, just to see if it was possible to get away with using only approved apps. As a computer user, I don’t have super high-powered demands. All I really need is Adobe Photoshop Elements, Spotify, Slack, and a web browser. The first three are available from the Microsoft Store, which is great. What is not great is being forced to use Microsoft Edge. While it’s not as terrible as Internet Explorer was, it doesn’t have the expandability afforded by the vast library of Chrome Extensions and Firefox Add-ons. Moreover, lots of websites just don’t play nice with the browser—many of the tools in Gizmodo’s publishing platform, Kinja, wouldn’t work in Edge, so I was forced to abandon the experiment.


Since launching last year, Microsoft has pulled back on Windows 10S in favor of something called Windows 10 in S mode, a walled garden mode where you can only use apps from the Windows store, but which you can also turn off for free. Not being charged for the full Windows experience is a good thing, but S Mode’s persistence also implies that Microsoft is not ready to give up on its little walled garden experiment. That’s worth noting because, as the company reportedly gears up to launch some rumored new devices, possibly even a phone one day, we might see Microsoft push the concept again.With my Surface Laptop running regular Windows now, my only big remaining complaint is that the device does not wear age well at all, physically speaking. The laptop’s aluminum finish almost never looks totally clean—it’s almost like the company was looking for a worn feel. I don’t totally hate it, but sometimes it looks a little more beat up than it really is. I’m also a little disgusted by what’s become of the cloth (“Alcantara”) keyboard. It’s filthy. And I’m not even that gross of a human. After a year there are big stains where the oils of my hands have gradually discolored the fabric. I love that Microsoft has made always bold design choices for its Surface devices, but the cloth keyboard has proven wrong-headed. It makes my otherwise beautiful device feel less than premium.


I do have other quibbles: Like our perennial complaint about the use of a proprietary Surface charger rather than USB-C. Though we fully expect the next wave of Surface devices to embrace the future in this regard.If it wasn’t for the Alcantara disgustingness, I would 100-percent buy a Surface Laptop if I needed a new computer tomorrow. It’s almost perfect and a great value for all its perks. But that gross palmrest might leave me looking to another machine. If you can suffer it then go for it, otherwise hope they fix it for the next generation.You can easily get a 2-in-1 for under $1,000, but how low can you go? At $699.99, the 13-inch Acer Spin 5 easily undercuts competitors on price while still offering a bright display and a comfortable keyboard, as well an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 CPU. But there are also some trade-offs, including poor battery life and plenty of bloatware. However, if you can live with those drawbacks, you'll find lots of value.

On the bright side, the screen was sharp, and I could make out every shard of a shattered glass window. When I played Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, there was a loss of detail in dark areas, and Talion's red outfit was muted.The FX504 covers just 66 percent of the sRGB color gamut, which is well below the 98-percent entry-level gaming average, as well as the showings from the Acer Nitro 5 Spin (105 percent) and the HP Pavilion Power 15t (68 percent).The panel on this Asus averaged only 220 nits on our light meter, which is dimmer than both the average (256 nits) and the Nitro 5 Spin (296 percent). The Pavilion Power 15t, however, fared even worse, at just 173 nits.The keys on the TUF Gaming FX504 offer 1.4 millimeters of travel and require a strong 76 grams of force to actuate. While that's just off of our usual preference of 1.5 millimeters, I never felt as if I was bottoming out. My bigger issue was that the keys felt ever-so-slightly bouncy, which took some getting used to. On the 10fastfingers.com typing test, I reached 114 words per minute, which is standard for me, but I had a 3-percent error rate, which is slightly higher than normal for me.


The keyboard has a number pad and is backlit, but only in red. At this price, you can't fault the FX504 for not having a full RGB keyboard.The 4.1 x 2.8-inch touchpad has a Windows Precision touchpad that responded to gestures like four-finger taps to invoke the Action Center and four-finger swipes to reach the Timeline. But when I navigated Windows, the plastic felt slippery and cheap.The speakers on the TUF Gaming FX504 are nice and loud, easily filling up a midsize conference room (and attracting attention from some people outside it). One good side effect of the extra weight is the stiff chassis. Pick up the Spectre x360 15 one-handed, and you needn’t fear that you’ll bend it. HP has jumped into 4K with both feet on the Spectre x360 15. While most PC makers offer a 1080p version to lower cost and increase battery life (higher-resolution screens inherently use more power), HP offers only a single, 3840x2160 IPS-like panel option.As more laptops offer 4K displays, it's important to know that this spec isn't a slam-dunk when it comes to quality. Our unit's panel is reasonably bright at a measured maximum output of 319 nits, but other high-end models can hit 400 to 500 nits.



Unlike Apple and Dell, who are busy taking away key travel, the HP Spectre x360 15 features a full 1.5mm of travel on its keyboard.
HP takes a new direction with the keyboard in this generation as well. The prior generation had speakers flanking the keyboard. In this new design, the speakers disappear and the backlit keyboard stretches edge to edge, allowing room for a 10-key numeric keypad. Yes, number-crunchers, it’s a properly designed 10-key, which Gigabyte and MSI still haven’t learned how to implement.While Apple and Dell have been acting like airline carriers, taking away creature comforts like keyboard travel, HP gives you what feels like business-class service, with a plush 1.5 mm for your weary fingers.Our only quibble is the half-height cursor keys for moving up and down. An inverted 'T' is always preferred. The trackpad is a glass-coated Synaptics ClickPad that’s slightly offset to align with the keyboard. We’ve had palm-rejection issues with some of HP’s extra-wide trackpads in the past, but this one we could not get to trigger. Good job.


The Spectre x360 doesn’t skimp on connectivity. You get a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports and a full-size HDMI on the right side. On the left there’s an SD card reader, analog audio jack, standard barrel charger, and—wait for it—a USB Type A port! Yes, Internet, rejoice!If you do a little dance because there’s still a USB Type A port on the new HP Spectre x 360 15, that’s perfectly fine with us.
The charger for the Spectre x360 15 is a beefy 150-watt unit. The Thunderbolt 3 ports with USB PD will also charge the laptop, but at a slower rate than you’ll get with the traditional barrel charger.Much of the excitement around Intel’s Kaby Lake-G CPUs stems from its once-unthinkable marriage of a custom Radeon RX Vega M with a quad-core 8th-generation Kaby Lake CPU. We expected strong graphics. The surprise for us came from the CPU side of things, though.


As with previous generations of its laptop CPUs, Intel’s 8th generation comes in two variants: low-power “U” chips and high-power “H” chips. The H chips usually rule the school, but Kaby Lake-G brings in some fresh, fast blood.Intel has been pretty coy about exactly what’s inside the “G” series of CPUs. Sure, they’re 8th-gen, but are they low-power or high-power? Well, it turns out, they’re high-power for the most part. Intel said it's using a new Dynamic Power Sharing feature that's possible only with the unique design of the Kaby Lake-G CPU. As you might guess from the name, performance between the CPU and the GPU is shared based on workload. If the GPU is at rest, power and thermals can be used to push the CPU to higher levels.


Our performance tests, therefore, are really a battle between the established H and the upstart G (while the low-power U watches from the sidelines). Which will prevail?First up is Cinebench R15, which tests multi-core CPU performance when rendering a 3D scene. We included results from the two other Spectre x360 15s in our performance chart: The Kaby Lake-R twin to our test unit, with the low-power quad-core Core i7-8550U, and the previous-generation low-power dual-core Core i7-7500U. The older unit comes in last, while the younger easily outpaces it.The Core i7-8705G in the Spectre x360 15 performs far closer to an H-series-class CPU, thanks to a unique power-sharing arrangement between the GPU and CPU

As we expect given its Core i7-7700HQ H chip, the Dell XPS 15 clamshell outruns everyone...except the new Core i7-8705G. The Dell XPS 15 and the new HP Spectre x360 15 actually have the same basic CPU, but the 8th-gen Kaby Lake-G version in the Spectre x360 15 is more than 50 percent faster than the 8th-gen Kaby Lake-R version in the XPS 15.



One other result we want to point out above is from the Lenovo Yoga 720. It’s another 15-inch convertible laptop with a high-power Core i7-7700HQ inside, plus GeForce GTX 1050 graphics. But it’s a good example of the performance you give up when you try to stuff a 45-watt CPU inside a convertible laptop with a 75-watt graphics card. In this CPU test, the Spectre x360 15 is more than 30 percent faster.Single-core performance for the Spectre x360 15 also sings, as you can see from our results in Cinebench (below) using a single CPU thread. These numbers are more indicative of what you’ll see in most real-world use, given that few applications will use all of the cores of a CPU.


Because all of the CPUs here use the same basic design, it comes down to how you can run the CPU. The newest 8th-gen chips take the lead, even over higher-power CPUs.The Cinebench benchmark is very useful, but it usually takes just a couple of minutes to run on many laptops. That’s not long enough to see how prolonged heat affects a system. That’s why we run our HandBrake encoding test, which can push the CPU hard for more than 40 minutes on a quad-core. In theory, if a laptop isn’t adequately cooled, or if it decides to sacrifice performance for fan noise, the effects will show up here.The results again put the new Spectre x360 15 ahead of the competition, but it’s really a tie. The good news for HP is it’s tied with Dell’s XPS 15, which is a standard clamshell design with fewer thermal compromises. What the test really tells us is the new Kaby Lake G is every bit as fast as a 45-watt H-series CPU.


We'd stop most mainstream laptop testing at this point. But with the Radeon RX Vega inside Kaby Lake-G, we also want to see how it performs in games. The first result we give you is Futuremark’s 3DMark Sky Diver. The results are right where Intel claimed they’d be: Between GeForce GTX 1050 and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.The test is a little sensitive to CPU performance, which propels the Spectre x360 15 a little higher than you’ll see in a more graphics-intensive games. Haken: Für die getestete Top-Variante veranschlagt Hewlett-Packard satte 1.799 Euro. Der Test von COMPUTER BILD klärt, ob das Spectre so viel Geld wert ist.Schon beim Erstkontakt ist offensichtlich, dass der Nutzer keinen Billigheimer in der Hand hält: Das edle Metall-Gehäuse des HP Spectre x360 13 ist tadellos verarbeitet und nur 1,4 Zentimeter dünn – bemerkenswert, denn Convertibles sind oft viel dicker. Der Grund sind die Scharniere, mit denen sich der Bildschirm auf die Rückseite der Tastatur klappen lässt – das Notebook wird zum Tablet. Die sind bei günstigen Geräten oft klobig. HP hingegen hat das filigran gelöst.

Richtig zackig absolvierte das HP Spectre x360 13 die Tempo-Prüfungen bei Office-Anwendungen. Sogar das aufwendige Zusammenstellen eines Films aus mehreren Clips erledigte das Spectre flink. Kein Wunder, als Motor dient ein Vier-Kern-Prozessor aus Intels Oberklasse Core i7 (Core i7-8550U), der auf einen mit 16 Gigabyte großzügig bemessenen Arbeitsspeicher zugreift. Auf einen Extra-Grafikchip verzichtet das Spectre aber. Das macht sich bei Spielen bemerkbar: Selbst mit reduzierter Auflösung ist der Grafikchip im Prozessor eher lahm: Im Test berechnete er bei DirectX-11-Spielen im Mittel 14 Bilder pro Sekunde – zu wenig, um aktuelle Spiele in voller Pracht zu genießen.



Ebenfalls klasse ist der Bildschirm: Er zeigt Videoclips und Urlaubsbilder in Full HD mit vielen Details und fast originalgetreuen Farben, die nur ein bisschen kräftiger sein dürften. Die Bedienung des Spectre x360 über den eingebauten Touchscreen funktioniert gut. Der Touchscreen erkennt die Berührungen des Nutzers genau. Der Ton über die eingebauten Lautsprecher ist Notebook-typisch eher mäßig, für Videotelefonate und die Windows-Systemtöne reichen sie aber. Gute Tonqualität gibt es über die 3,5-Millimeter-Klinkenbuchse per Kopfhörer oder Headset.
Für ein leichtes Ultrabook mit reichlich Power hält das HP Spectre x360 13 lange durch. Beim Arbeiten sind gut viereinhalb Stunden drin, beim Video gucken hält der Akku sogar noch eine Stunde länger durch. Die Kühlung hat HP gut im Griff: Im Normalbetrieb arbeitet das Spectre mit 0,1 Sone fast unhörbar, erst unter Volllast machen sich die Lüfter mit 1,4 Sone bemerkbar.


Das Spectre lagert Software, Fotos und Videos in der getesteten Variante auf einer schnellen PCI-Express-SSD mit einer Kapazität von 1.000 Gigabyte. Das dürfte für meisten Notebook-Nutzer lange reichen. Mehr Speicher lässt sich über die drei USB-Buchsen anschließen. Zwei davon kommen im neueren Typ-C-Format und arbeiten mit der Thunderbolt-Technik, die bis zu 40 Gigabit pro Sekunde übertragen kann – viermal schneller als nur per USB möglich. Aufrüsten klappt beim Spectre leider nicht: Ein Öffnen des Notebook-Gehäuses durch den Nutzer ist nicht vorgesehen.
In seiner neuen Firmenzentrale in Santa Clara hat AMD die bisher unter dem Codenamen Raven Ridge bekannten mobilen APUs auch für Profirechner vorgestellt. Ihre Handelsmarke lautet nun Ryzen Pro für die Desktop-Bausteine und Ryzen Pro Mobile für die Notebook-Chips. Besonders Letztere dürften den Markt für Business-Notebooks aufwirbeln, denn erstmals in der Geschichte von AMD bieten mit Dell, HP und Lenovo alle Anbieter von professionellen Windows-Rechnern Geräte mit den Intel-Alternativen an.



Während die Designs, wie AMD in Santa Clara offen zugab, auf den bisherigen Ryzen-Chips der zweiten Generation basieren, unterscheiden sich die neuen APUs vor allem im Support für die Gerätehersteller. So garantiert AMD, dass die Bausteine mindestens zwei Jahre lang lieferbar sind, und dass sich die Betriebssystem-Images jeweils ab Erstellung mindestens anderthalb Jahre nicht ändern sollen. Für Unternehmen, die Hunderte oder Tausende von PCs anschaffen, installieren und selbst warten müssen, ist das ein entscheidender Vorteil von Business-Notebooks.


Für diese Geräte gibt es drei APUs, also eine Kombination aus vier Ryzen-Cores mit einer Vega-Grafikeinheit. Sie unterscheiden sich im Takt der Kerne und vor allem der Zahl der Rechenwerke der GPUs. Diese sind bei den Ryzen 3 Pro 2300U, 5 Pro 2500U und 7 Pro 2700 jeweils mit sechs, acht oder zehn Compute Units (CU) bestückt. Die Takte der x86-Kerne liegen bei den drei Modellen jeweils in den Bereichen von 2 bis 3,4 GHz, 2 bis 3,6 GHz und 2,2 bis 3,8 GHz. Wie viel Leistung sich daraus ergibt, kann sich je nach Notebook unterscheiden, denn die Hersteller können die Leistungsaufnahme von 12 bis 25 Watt TDP anpassen - das ist bei Intel-Rechnern aber auch nicht anders. Durch den geringen Energiebedarf sollen sich die APUs auch für besonders flache und leichte Profirechner eignen.


Den wohl schicksten Vertreter dieser Kategorie legte HP vor: Die bereits kurz vorgestellte Serie Elitebook 700 gibt es mit Displays von 13,3, 14 oder 15,6 Zoll. Eine Besonderheit behielt sich HP noch für den Marktstart vor: Nach Angaben des Unternehmens sind die Elitebooks die ersten Businessgeräte mit einem Helligkeitssensor, der das Display automatisch dimmt. Dazu kommt noch eine Funktion namens Sure View, welche die Einblickwinkel drastisch reduziert, damit etwa der Sitznachbar im Flugzeug nicht heimlich mitlesen kann. Bei kurzen Versuchen vor Ort klappte das ganz gut, die Lesbarkeit von schräg hinten war aber nicht so stark eingeschränkt wie bei den aufsteckbaren Privacy Filters von 3M, die seit Jahren angeboten werden. Größter Vorteil nach erstem Eindruck: Sure View wird per Funktionstaste blitzschnell ein- oder ausgeschaltet.

Matte displays don't typically have the same wow factor as their glossy counterparts, but I was in awe every time I visited my favorite websites on the Precision. My main complaint with the display is that skin tones look oversaturated, but you can adjust the color temperature using Dell's included display-calibration software.The display's outstanding qualities were quantified in our testing. The panel reproduced a staggering 211 percent of the sRGB color gamut, achieving among the highest ratings we've seen. While the Lenovo ThinkPad P71 (183 percent) and HP ZBook 17 G4 (173 percent) also impressed, their panels were nowhere near as colorful as the Precision's. The workstation average is much lower, at 149 percent.


With this machine's matte display and impressive peak brightness, you should have no issue using the Precision 7730 in bright environments. The display reached a maximum brightness of 330 nits, which is higher than scores from the ThinkPad P71 (283 nits) and HP ZBook 17 G4 (256 nits). The workstation average is also dimmer, at 325 nits. For a device this large, the Precision 7730's 3.9 x 2.1-inch touchpad is inexplicably small. For comparison, the current 15-inch MacBook Pro has a 83.6-watt-hour battery.The 7-inch-long HyperJuice has three ports -- one 100-watt USB-C port for the 15-inch MacBook Pro, one 60-watt USB-C port for smaller laptops that don't draw as much power, and one quick-charge 18-watt old-style USB-A for phones and tablets. You can charge devices with all three of its ports at the same time.


The device shows the versatility of the USB-C standard, years old but still a relative novelty for much of the computing world. The same port can be used for many types of devices, and now it can handle charging PCs as well as power-sipping phones. The Helios 300 reminds me of gaming laptops from two years ago when tasteful styling was unheard of and a gaming laptop that could double as a productivity machine was equally unheard of. I cannot say this design language has aged well — it hasn’t — but the real worth of the Helios 300 is in how well it can play games.A “gaming” laptop, no matter its price, should be able to deliver high-end performance through a decent GPU and CPU and have the bare essentials to take advantage of that performance, such as a high refresh rate screen and reliable cooling. To this point, the Acer Helios 300 delivers a little bit of everything and then some.



The first spec an affordable gaming laptop should focus on is a good screen. Acer used a 144Hz IPS screen on the Helios 300. High refresh rate screens are important in PC gaming because the higher the rate, the smoother your gameplay experience will be. 144Hz is the current standard for high-end desktops and laptops, and it’s a welcome addition to a $1,200 laptop, which are usually equipped with slower, 60Hz screens.There’s a lot I can say about the Helios 300’s gaming and productivity performance. Prior to the Helios 300, I haven’t tested a sub-$2,000 laptop that can play Rainbow Six: Siege and League of Legends, at a consistent 144 frames per second. Overwatch also runs at ultra settings, but it dips to the 80 fps mark in intense firefights. Destiny 2 also runs comfortably at around 100 fps with settings on ultra.The gist of it is that you’ll be able to play most current-generation PC games on high (or the highest) settings, well past the 60 fps mark needed for smooth gameplay, and sometimes you’ll even reach the native 144 fps target.

Damit ist es für Nikon leichter, besonders lichtstarke Objektive zu entwickeln; auch Objektive mit einer Anfangsblende unter f1 sind möglich. Die tragen dann den Zusatz „Noct“ – von lateinisch nocturnus, auf Deutsch „Nacht“. Für das F-Bajonett baut Nikon wegen des geringeren Innendurchmessers aktuell nur Objektive mit maximaler Anfangsblende von f1.4.
Es kommen zwei neue Objektive: das Standard-Zoom Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm f4 S und das Weitwinkel Nikon Nikkor Z 35mm f1.8 S. Beide sind teurer als ältere Spiegelreflexobjektive, kosten etwa so viel wie ihre Sony-Pendants: Das Nikkor Z 24-70mm f4 S soll für 1.100 Euro zu haben sein, das Nikkor Z 35mm f1.8 S für 950 Euro. Im Test überzeugten beide an der Nikon Z7 mit Topqualität. Schon bei offener Blende sind die Aufnahmen knackscharf und extrem detailreich – bis in die Ecken, das schaffen viele ältere Spiegelreflexobjektive nicht. Was nicht in der Schärfeebene liegt, versinkt bei den neuen Z-Objektiven schön in der Hintergrundunschärfe, auch „Bokeh“ genannt.


Im Oktober folgt das Normalobjektiv Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm f1.8 S für 680 Euro, Anfang 2019 das ultralichtstarke Nikkor Z 58mm f0.95 S Noct, das vermutlich erst einmal das mit Abstand teuerste Objektiv für das neue System ist. Nikon hat weitere Varianten für die beiden nächsten Jahren angekündigt, darunter drei kompakte Festbrennweiten mit Anfangsblende f1.8 (20,24 und 85 Millimeter), ein Normalobjektiv (50 Millimeter) mit Anfangsblende f1.2, ein Profizoom-Trio mit Anfangsblende f2.8 (14-24, 24-70 und 70-200 Millimeter) und ein kompaktes Weitwinkelzoom (14-30 Millimeter f4).


Trotz des neuen Objektivanschlusses passen alte Objektive mit Nikon-F-Bajonett an die neue Kamera. Dafür bringt Nikon den Objektivadapter FTZ (einzeln 300 Euro, im Set mit der Kamera 150 Euro). Mit dem Adapter passen rund 360 Objektivmodelle für Spiegelreflexkameras von Nikon an den neuen Systemkameras – je nach Alter der Optiken mit mehr und minder großen Einschränkungen. Neuere Objektive aus den Serien AF-S und AF-P – beispielsweise das Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8E ED VR, das Nikon AF-S Nikkor 500mm f5.6E PF ED VR oder das Profi-Zoom Nikon AF-S Nikkor 180-400mm f4E FL ED VR – funktionieren nahezu uneingeschränkt; der Autofokus arbeitet ähnlich schnell wie mit den meisten Spiegelreflexmodellen von Nikon. Selbst ältere Objektive ohne Autofokus lassen sich an der Z7 verwenden.


Dann hilft die Kamera auf Wunsch mit Focus Peaking (farbiges Hervorheben der scharfen Bildteile) beim Scharfstellen, bei der Z7 im Menü „Individualfunktionen“ unter „Konturfilter für Lichter“ (Funktion „d10“) zu finden.
Die neuen Nikon-Systemkameras fallen etwas größer als die Modelle der Alpha-7-Serie von Sony aus, sind aber deutlich kleiner als Vollformat-Spiegelreflexkameras. Nikon nutzt diese Zwischengröße für große Handgriffe. Das sorgt für einen guten Halt und alle Bedienelemente sind schnell erreichbar. Die Bedienung nimmt starke Anleihen bei den Spiegelreflexmodellen von Nikon, mit deutlichen Änderungen. So gibt es auf der Vorderseite der Kamera nur zwei programmierbare Tasten (Fn1 und Fn2). Fn2 dient dabei als Ersatz für den Autofokus-Wahlschalter, lässt sich aber auch für andere Funktionen programmieren.



Neu bei den Profimodellen ist das Programmwahlrad mit drei programmierbaren Benutzermodi und einer Vollautomatik. Das gab es bisher nur bei kleineren Nikon-Modellen wie der Nikon D7500. Verarbeitung und Bedienung der Gehäuse der beiden neuen Modelle sind gleich. Nettigkeit für Nikon-Fotografen: Die neuen Kameras verwenden eine minimal überarbeitete Version des Akkus Nikon EN-EL15a, der in vielen Nikon-Spiegelreflexkameras steckt – den EN-EL15b. Vorteil der neuen Batterie: Sie lässt sich in der Kamera über die USB-Buchse aufladen. In der Entwicklung befindet sich der Batteriegriff MB-N10, der zwei Akkus aufnimmt und so die Ausdauer der Kameras nahezu verdoppeln soll. Systemkameratypisch hängt die Akkulaufzeit extrem davon ab, wie der Fotograf arbeitet. Im Test reichte eine Akkuladung für 2.000 Bilder.


Im Serienbildmodus ist noch mehr drin: Nach einer Reihe von Serien mit insgesamt 650 Fotos war der Akku noch zu 86 Prozent gefüllt. Und wer selbst nicht stetig Bild um Bild schießt, dürfte mit einem Akku über den Tag kommen – hier sind in der Praxis zwischen 400 und 800 Bildern drin.
Ungewöhnlich für Profimodelle: Die Nikon Z7 hat nur einen Speicherkartensteckplatz – üblich sind in dieser Preisklasse zwei. Dafür ist der Steckplatz besonders schnell: Er nimmt Speicherkarten im XQD-Format auf, etwa aus der Sony XQD M Series oder der Sony XQD G Series, die Daten mit bis zu 440 Megabyte pro Sekunde übertragen. Ein Firmware-Update für die Kamera für den neuen CFExpress-Standard soll folgen. Diese Speicherkarten nutzen die PCIe-Technik und sollen bis zu 2 Gigabyte pro Sekunde übertragen.


Die schnellen Speichermedien gleichen einen Nachteil aus: Der Zwischenspeicher der neuen Systemkameras fällt recht klein aus und ist bei Maximaltempo (neun Bilder pro Sekunde bei der Nikon Z7) schon nach etwa 3 Sekunden gefüllt. Ein kurzes Hochheben des Auslösefingers reicht aber, damit die Kamera die Fotos auf die Speicherkarte schreibt und wieder voll aufnahmebereit ist. Sportfotografen sind jedoch mit einer Canon EOS-1D X Mark II, einer Nikon D500, einer Nikon D5 oder einer Sony Alpha 9 besser dran. Hier sind locker 200 Aufnahmen am Stück mit vollem Tempo möglich.
Nikon baut schon lange Spiegelreflexkameras mit hoher Videoqualität, doch Zusatzfunktionen – wie eine Aufnahme im sogenannten Log-Format oder Focus Peaking (eine Kontrastfarbe zeigt den scharfen Bereich) – fehlten oft und der Autofokus im LiveView-Modus war lahm.


Alles Schnee von gestern: Die neuen Nikon-Systemkameras stellen beim Filmen genauso schnell scharf wie beim Fotografieren und bringen reichlich Profifilmfunktionen mit: N-Log, Zebra (schraffiert überbelichtete Partien), Focus Peaking, Full-HD-Aufnahme mit 120 Bildern pro Sekunde und 10-Bit-Ausgabe über die HDMI-Buchse – etwa, um mit einem externen Videorekorder aufzunehmen. Die Videos sehen auch ohne Nutzung der Profi-Funktionen richtig gut aus: Die 4K-Videos gefallen mit einem sehr detailreichen Bild, die Full-HD-Videos mit einer sehr flüssigen Darstellung schneller Bewegungen. Auch der Ton der Videos klingt gut.
In den vergangenen beiden Jahren ließen sich neue Nikon-Kameras nur über die Snapbridge-App (gibt es für Android und Apple) mit dem Smartphone verbinden. Dafür gab es viel Kritik, da die ersten Versionen von Snapbridge zickig waren. Die aktuelle Version funktioniert relativ zuverlässig, viele Nikon-Fotografen möchten aber andere WLAN-Software einsetzen. Das klappt beispielsweise mit der hauseigenen Software „Camera Control Pro“ zur Fernsteuerung der Kamera. Das bei Fotoprofis beliebte Programm „qDslrDashboard“ braucht aber noch ein Update – die aktuelle Version findet die Nikon Z7, steuert sie aber noch nicht vollständig fern. Sehr selten bei Digitalkameras: Das WLAN der Z7 arbeitet mit der schnellen ac-Technik.



Zusammen mit der Nikon Z7 angekündigt, aber erst im November verfügbar ist das kleinere Schwestermodell Z6. Von außen ist sie nur am Schriftzug zu unterscheiden – im Inneren steckt aber eine etwas andere Technik: Der Sensor arbeitet mit geringer Auflösung (24 Megapixel). Das hat einen handfesten Nachteil – die Fotos werden nicht so extrem detailreich wie bei der Z7. Aber dadurch ergeben sich auch einige Vorteile – der wichtigste: Die Z6 ist 1.400 Euro günstiger. Das Gehäuse mit dem Bajonettadapter FTZ kostet 2.450 Euro, mit dem Zoom sind es 2.900 Euro und die Kombi aus Kamera, Zoom und Bajonettadapter kostet 3.050 Euro.

Mit dem Dell Latitude 5590 bietet der Hersteller ein modernes Business-Gerät an, welches mit vielen Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten überzeugen soll. Somit lässt sich das Gerät optimal auf die erforderlichen Bedürfnisse im Unternehmen anpassen, ohne dabei den finanziellen Rahmen zu sprengen.Bei den Prozessoren vertraut Dell auf Intel, sodass vorrangig die 8. Generation der Intel Prozessoren verbaut wird. Auf der Webseite finden sich jedoch auch noch Konfigurationen, welche die Vorgängergeneration beinhalten. Unser Testsample bietet einen Intel Core i5-8250U mit 8 GB Arbeitsspeicher und einer 256 GB fassenden SSD. Damit lässt sich sehr gut und flink arbeiten. Das matte IPS-Panel rundet das Office-Paket gut ab, welches für 1.100 Euro über die virtuelle Ladentheke geht. Die Topausstattung bietet mit dem Intel Core i7-8650U und dem 16 GB-DDR4-RAM eine deutlich bessere Basis. Auch die 512 GB fassende SSD bietet etwas mehr Spielraum, was den Kaufpreis schnell auf 2.000 Euro erhöht.


In diesem Vergleichstest muss sich das Dell Latitude 5590 gegen die Konkurrenz von Fujitsu (Fujitsu LifeBook U757) und HP (HP EliteBook 850 G4) sowie gegen das Lenovo ThinkPad T570 beweisen. Für den direkten Vergleich haben wir auch das Vorgängermodell Dell Latitude 5580 herangezogen.


Das ganz in Schwarz gehaltene Gehäuse wirkt wertig, wenngleich die Base etwas stabiler hätte sein können. Diese lässt sich mit wenig Kraftaufwand sichtbar verdrehen. Besser ergeht es dem Displaydeckel, welcher etwas robuster ist. Ein ähnliches Bild zeigt sich auch beim Drucktest. Die Base gibt mittig etwas nach, aber auch der Displaydeckel kann eine Wellenbildung beim punktuellen Drücken nicht gänzlich verhindern. Trotzdem wurde das Gehäuse nach dem US-Militärstandard "MIL-STD 810G" geprüft. Damit sollte das Dell Latitude 5590 dem realen Arbeitsalltag mühelos standhalten. Die beiden Scharniere arbeiten sehr zuverlässig und bieten einen sehr weiten Öffnungswinkel (bis zu 180 Grad). Das Öffnen ist aufgrund des geringen Gegengewichts der Base nur mit zwei Händen möglich. Das Nachwippen kann auf ein Minimum begrenzt werden.


Das Dell Latitude 5590 ist mit 2,0 Kilogramm nicht gerade ein Leichtgewicht, aber das HP EliteBook 850 ist mit 1,9 Kilogramm nicht sehr viel leichter. Das Netzteil haben wir mit 314 Gramm gemessen. Bei der Stellfläche gibt es keinen klaren Sieger oder Verlierer. Da es sich hierbei ausschließlich um 15-Zoll-Geräte handelt, gibt es bei der Stellfläche nur sehr geringe Abweichungen.



In puncto Anschlussausstattung bietet das Dell Latitude 5590 eigentlich all das, was benötigt wird. So finden wir 3 USB Schnittstellen, welche sich sehr gut verteilen sowie einen Typ-C-Anschluss, welcher auch als DisplayPort-Ausgang dient. HDMI ist ebenfalls mit von der Partie sowie ein VGA-Ausgang, welcher schon des Öfteren wegrationalisiert wurde. Ob Dell entgegen dem Trend weiterhin an diesem Anschluss festhalten wird, werden wir in Zukunft sehen. Wir würden es begrüßen, denn viele Beamer, welche noch in Gebrauch sind, bieten nur eine VGA-Schnittstelle. Somit bleibt einem das Hantieren mit Adaptern erspart.


Positiv zu erwähnen ist der Speicherkartenleser, welcher SD-Karten vollständig aufnimmt, sodass diese nicht aus dem Schacht ragen. Sehr gut ist auch die Performance, welche mit UHS-II-Geschwindigkeit deutlich über dem Klassendurchschnitt liegt. So gut die SD-Karten-Performance ist, so schlecht ist leider die WLAN-Performance, denn mit den gemessenen Datenraten muss sich das Dell Latitude 5590 gegenüber dem Fujitsu LifeBook U757 deutlich geschlagen geben.


Die vorhandene Tastatur des Dell Latitude 5590 wirkt sehr übersichtlich und aufgeräumt. Die Tasten sind mit 14 x 14 Millimetern etwas kleiner als bei vergleichbaren Geräten. Der Druckpunkt ist gut spürbar, wenngleich dieser auch etwas straffer hätte sein dürfen. Insgesamt bietet die Chiclet-Tastatur ein angenehmes Schreibgefühl. Das Tippgeräusch ist zwar hörbar, jedoch sorgt der etwas gedämpfte Anschlag dafür, dass keine störenden Geräusche beim Schreiben entstehen. An das Layout muss man sich etwas gewöhnen, denn gerade die Pfeiltasten fallen mit nur halber Höhe etwas klein aus, weshalb es hier schnell zu Vertippern kommen kann. Als Mausersatz dient das Touchpad oder auch der Trackpoint, welcher sich mittig der Tasten "G", "H" und "B" befindet. Für eine etwas angenehmere Steuerung hätte dieser jedoch ein paar Millimeter höher sein dürfen. So besteht die Gefahr, beim Navigieren eine der drei Tasten zu betätigen. Das Navigieren an sich funktioniert recht gut, was aber auch etwas Übung und Eingewöhnung erfordert. Die zum Trackpoint gehörenden Eingabetasten befinden sich direkt unterhalb der Leertaste. Diese geben dem Anwender beim Betätigen ein leises akustisches Feedback. Das darunter befindliche Touchpad bietet eine Eingabefläche von 10 x 5,4 Zentimetern, was leider etwas klein ist. Hier wäre es sinnvoller ein Clickpad zu verbauen, um die separaten Tasten als Eingabefläche nutzbar zu machen. Die Oberfläche ist leicht angeraut, was aber die Gleiteigenschaft nicht negativ beeinflusst. Etwas ungenau arbeitet das Touchpad in den beiden unteren Ecken. Die beiden Eingabetasten darunter funktionieren ebenso gut wie die des Trackpoints.



Das verbaute IPS-Panel bietet bei einer Diagonalen von 15,6 Zoll 1.920 x 1.080 Bildpunkte. Im Rahmen unserer Messungen erreicht das Dell Latitude 5590 eine durchschnittliche Displayhelligkeit von 243 cd/m². Damit reiht sich unser Testgerät jedoch hinter den Vergleichsgeräten ein, welche durchweg mit einem helleren Bildschirm versehen sind. Mit 83 % ist die Ausleuchtung eher unterdurchschnittlich. Sehr gut hingegen gefällt uns der geringe Schwarzwert (0,19), woraus ein relativ gutes Kontrastverhältnis von 1.279:1 hervorgeht. Clouding konnten wir in den beiden oberen Ecken beobachten, dies allerdings auch nur bei einer komplett schwarzen Darstellung. Im Alltagsgebrauch sollte es hierbei zu keinen Einschränkungen kommen. Die Helligkeit wird bei unserem Gerät durch PWM reguliert, was wir mit einer Frequenz von 1.000 Hz gemessen haben.


Die Darstellungsqualität kann als gut gewertet werden. Die Farbraumabweichungen sind mit durchschnittlich 6,6 (DeltaE2000 Colochecker) und 5,2 (DeltaE2000 Graustufen) im Auslieferungszustand nur leicht erhöht. Bei den Farbraumabdeckungen kann uns das Dell Latitude 5590 leider auch nicht überzeugen, denn mit 60,8 % sRGB und 39,2 % AdobeRGB reicht dies lediglich für hobbymäßige Bildbearbeitung.


Aufgrund der geringen Displayhelligkeit ist das Arbeiten im Freien etwas erschwert. Pluspunkte gibt es für die matte Oberfläche, welche Spiegelungen verhindert. Falls eine Outdoor-Nutzung unumgänglich ist, empfehlen wir einen Schattenplatz. Die Vorteile eines IPS-Panels werden vor allem beim Blickwinkeltest deutlich, denn das Testbild kann gut aus allen Blickwinkeln dargestellt werden. Die leichten Schleierbildungen an den Eckbildern sind normal und schränken die Nutzung nicht ein.

Just ask the family of Nazrin Hassan, the Malaysian tech incubator CEO who died after one of his phones burst into flame. Consider Tallmadge D'Elia, who expired when his exploding vape pen sent fragments into his skull. Or think of the hoverboard owners who watched their houses burn down.You're far more likely to be struck by lightning (1 in 1,042,000) than ever see a battery flame up (1 in 10 million is the number experts tend to quote). But the fact remains: Like your car's gasoline engine, lithium-ion batteries require flammable liquids to generate their power in a controlled chemical reaction.


If that reaction gets out of control because the battery's structural integrity is breached -- or if there's a widespread manufacturing defect like one that afflicted 2016's Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 -- all bets are off. That's why, even as we surround ourselves with more lithium-ion-powered devices, we don't fully trust them yet.But what if that fraction of a doubt could be removed? What if the safety profile of lithium-ion batteries could be made to be so reliable that even a catastrophic structural failure -- up to and including being pierced by a bullet -- wouldn't cause them to explode?That's exactly the promise of SafeCore, by a company called Amionx. CNET flew to Amionx's Carlsbad facilities earlier this year, where we submitted SafeCore batteries -- and some normal lithium-ion competitors -- to a full range of torture tests. You'll want to watch our video below. According to Amionx, the company's breakthrough isn't just a battery that doesn't easily combust. It's that the company's scientists discovered a formula they claim could easily be applied to existing battery manufacturing lines -- no new machines required -- to bring this breakthrough to any lithium-ion battery in the world.A palm-tree laden Carlsbad business park just past Legoland California may not be where you'd think to find the next leap in battery safety. But walk through a special door past the normal business trappings -- the vacant receptionist's desk, the cubicles and conference rooms -- and you step onto a miniature factory floor with its own lithium-ion battery assembly line.


The company says these machines can produce a million lithium-ion battery cells per year, and they're not just here for show: American Lithium Energy, the parent company of Amionx with which it shares the building, supplies batteries to the US military for use in heavy-duty trucks and lightly armored vehicles like the MRAP, among other projects. (Public records show the company has received $2.77 million in R&D grants from the Army to date.)Today, the humming machines are being used to show what Amionx's secret sauce can do. One spoonful at a time, a technician drizzles the black goop onto a thin sheet of metal winding through the machine from reel to giant reel. This particular apparatus is an electrode laminator, which coats the battery's all-important positive and negative terminals in an array of chemicals before they get sliced into smaller pieces and stacked (or wound) into a complete battery cell.What we're seeing seems to be a typical, ordinary battery making process, goop and all -- but Amionx's compound is a special formula that took four years to create.


When a battery heats up, threatening to catch fire, Amionx's special material acts like an electrical fuse, creating a physical gap between two key components of the battery. That gap means electricity is forced to take a far more difficult path through the cell, which dramatically slows down the reaction to the point a battery doesn't get hot enough to catch fire or explode.It's not like there aren't other ways to protect a battery. Amionx founder and CTO Dr. Jiang Fan admits that today's lithium-ion batteries have a variety of other mechanisms that can prevent fires, including current interrupters, shutdown separators and PTC (positive temperature coefficient) devices, but he says all of them can fail -- a battery can heat up so fast that some safety mechanisms may literally melt before they can take action.



"That's why sometimes even though they have the shutdown separator for 20 years, they still have these thermal incidents," says Fan -- adding that his SafeCore kicks in right away.To test out Amionx's safety promise, we open another door at the back of the factory floor, and walk outside into a fenced area of the building's parking lot -- where industrial-strength battery crushing and puncturing test chambers are waiting to let the smoke out of these cells. One machine is designed to drop a huge, heavy weight onto a metal bar laid flat across the top of the battery, completely crushing a large portion of a battery in an instant, while the other slowly punctures it with a giant nail.

Messungen von Notebookcheck zeigen aber, dass auch hier der Farbraum auf fast 100 Prozent sRGB verbessert wurde. Das vermeintlich schlechtere Display bietet dort auch einen besseren Schwarzwert und kommt so auf einen Kontrast von 1600:1. Dafür leuchtet das Panel mit im Schnitt 405 cd/m² nicht mehr ganz so hell wie die Ultra-HD-Variante, übertrifft damit aber nach wie vor den von Dell angegebenen Wert von 400 cd/m².


Zu den eher kleinen Veränderungen zählt eine weitere Reduzierung des Displayrahmens um etwa einen Millimeter auf jetzt nur noch vier Millimeter. 80,7 Prozent der Innenseite des Deckels werden vom Display eingenommen, sagt Dell. Um das Display auf drei von vier Seiten so schmal einzufassen, musste der Bereich am Scharnier größer ausfallen, was aber nicht negativ ins Gewicht fällt. Dort bringt Dell neben der Display-Technik sein Logo und die neue Infrarot-Kamera (720p) unter, die für die biometrische Anmeldung über Windows Hello geeignet ist. Vom Winkel her ist die Position für Skype-Gespräche nach wie vor schlecht, weil viel zu tief, aber sie reicht gerade so noch aus. Dell würde die Kamera irgendwann einmal am liebsten in das Display integrieren, nur gibt es diese Technologie noch nicht.

The Vaio Duo features NFC, which I had no use for, and there's GPS too if you need it. Sony’s Vaio Control Centre app provides speedy access to a range of commonly used features, and having scoured the keyboard for dedicated controls to alter the Duo's backlighting, I eventually found the functions here. Handy power and performance modes can be switched over too, without trawling through the Windows options. Über die Jahre hat man dabei viele Inkonsistenzen beseitigt, und tatsächlich wird Android dabei auch um das eine oder andere sinnvolle Feature erweitert. Trotzdem regt sich bei der Nutzung schnell der Wunsch, dass Samsung seine Softwareausstattung wieder einmal grob aufräumt. Über die Jahre sind hier viele Dinge hinzugekommen, deren Nutzen zweifelhafter Natur ist, und die in der Kategorie Gimmick zu verbuchen sind. Das beginnt schon bei der Einrichtung mit einer schier endlosen Reihe an Dialogen, die einen zur Nutzung aller möglichen Dienste drängen wollen – und das noch dazu äußerst wortreich, so dass man schnell einfach nur mehr alles wegklicken will.

Jemand, der selbst ein eigenes App- und Service-Ökosystem betreibt, über das man die Kunden an sich binden kann, damit diese nicht einfach zur Konkurrenz wechseln können.


Das ist strategisch gesehen zwar durchaus nachvollziehbar, hat aber ein klitzekleines Problem: Bisher ist Samsung noch mit jedem dieser Versuche gescheitert, wie eine lange Liste an eingestellten Apps und Services belegt. Doch so einfach gibt sich Samsung natürlich nicht geschlagen. Wieso denn bloß??? Der aktuelle Hoffnungsträger nennt sich Bixby und ist Samsungs Version eines digitalen Assistenten. Der Hardwarehersteller hält diese Entwicklung dabei für so zentral, dass er ihr sogar einen eigenen Knopf an der Seite des Geräts spendiert. Das war zwar auch schon beim S8 und Note 8 der Fall, nun soll aber – nach massiver Kritik an der ersten Version von Bixby – alles besser werden. Der Assistent habe in der Zwischenzeit massiv dazugelernt, sagt Samsung. Sagt der Tester: Hat er nicht. Wie man es auch drehen und wenden mag, Bixby ist einfach nicht gut.



Die Antworten sind oftmals erratisch, die gebotenen Möglichkeiten weit von dem entfernt, was der Google Assistant bietet, und auch mit Alexa kann man in vielerlei Hinsicht nicht mithalten. Und dann kommt noch die schlichte Realität dazu, dass so ein Assistent eben umso besser funktioniert, je mehr Daten der Hersteller über seine Nutzer hat – und hier fehlen Samsung dann einfach wieder zu Google vergleichbare – und auch wirklich genutzte – Dienste. Doch selbst wenn Bixby besser wäre als er ist, wäre die Entscheidung dafür einen eigenen Knopf dafür zu verbauen, zweifelhaft. Immerhin ist die Nutzung solcher Assistenten am Smartphone ganz generell noch ein Randthema.


Doch anstatt sich dieser Realität zu stellen, legt Samsung sogar noch nach: Beim Note 9 lässt sich der Bixby-Knopf nämlich gar nicht mehr deaktivieren – am S9 ging das noch. Zynische Naturen könnten hier einen Plan vermuten, die Nutzungszahlen nach oben zu treiben. Macht doch – mutmaßlich – der unabsichtliche Aufruf über den Hardware-Button einen bedeutenden Teil der Bixby-Nutzung aus. Softwareauswahl Dass die Softwareausstattung beim Note 9 umfangreicher als bei vielen anderen Smartphones ausfällt, wurde bereits erwähnt. Allerdings gibt es in dieser Hinsicht auch Erfreuliches zu erwähnen: Mittlerweile sind nämlich viele der weniger wichtigen Samsung-Apps nicht mehr von Haus aus vorinstalliert. Bereits beim Setup des Geräts kann die Installation einer Vielzahl von Apps unterbunden werden, die Palette reicht dabei vom Samsung Internet Browser bis zum eigenen Mail-Client und dem Taschenrechner. Interessant ist auch der Umgang mit Google-Apps: Ein Teil davon wird ebenfalls erst während des Setups installiert, darunter etwa Duo, Google Play Music oder auch Google Photos.


Das bedeutet, dass sie im Nachhinein von den Nutzern problemlos komplett deinstalliert werden können. Eine Entwicklung, die durchaus erfreulich ist, von Samsung aber auch verblüffend inkonsequent umgesetzt wird. So sind etwa eine ganze Reihe von Microsoft-Apps fix vorinstalliert. Darunter neben den diversen Office-Apps und OneDrive mittlerweile auch LinkedIn. Zumindest bei guten Lichtverhältnissen funktioniert das auch halbwegs brauchbar. Das ändert aber nichts daran, dass ein Fingerabdruck weiterhin schneller und zuverlässiger arbeitet – und mit vergleichbaren Level an Sicherheit zu Apples Face ID kann die Samsung-Lösung ebenfalls nicht aufwarten. Beim Note 9 klappt das Ganze zum ersten Mal ohne eigenes Dock, es reicht also, via passendem Kabel einen Monitor anzuschließen und schon kann es losgehen. Zumindest in der Theorie. In der Praxis braucht man für produktives Arbeiten natürlich noch eine externe Tastatur und eine Maus sowie das passende USB-C auf HDMI-Kabel, um die Verbindung zum Bildschirm herzustellen. Und genau da zeigt sich schon das grundlegende Problem dieser Idee: Im Endeffekt ist es meist einfacher, auf Reisen gleich einen Laptop mitzunehmen, und die Daten automatisch zu syncen, anstatt Peripherie einzupacken und sich dann mit der Verkabelung in einem Hotel herumzuschlagen. DeX ist, wie ähnliche Lösungen anderer Hersteller zuvor, einfach eine in der Theorie nett klingende Angelegenheit, die in der Praxis bisher aber kaum Anhänger gefunden hat. Kontostand: -viel Bleibt noch eine entscheidende Frage: Was kostet der Spaß?


Und hier wird so mancher Interessent schlucken müssen: Das kleinere Modell mit 6 GB RAM und 128 GB lokalem Speicher ist für 999 Euro zu haben, während für die größere Ausführung mit 8 GB RAM und 512 GB Speicherplatz gleich 1.249 Euro veranschlagt werden. HP informiert eher allgemein, dass Produkte der Linien HP ProBook 64x (G2 und G3), HP ProBook 65x (G2 und G3), HP x360 310 G2, HP ENVY m6, HP Pavilion x360, HP 11 Notebooks und HP ZBook (17 G3, 17 G4 und Studio G3) betroffen seien, die zwischen Dezember 2015 und Dezember 2017 verkauft wurden. Betroffen sind diesmal bestimmte MacBook Pro-Geräte von Apple mit 13-Zoll-Bildschirm.Betroffen von dem Akku-Problem sind Geräte ohne "Touchbar", die zwischen Oktober 2016 und Oktober 2017 hergestellt wurden, teilt Apple mit. Bei den Akku-Problemen handele es sich nicht um ein sicherheitsrelevantes Problem."Apple hat festgestellt, dass es bei einer begrenzten Anzahl von MacBook Pro-Geräten mit 13-Zoll-Display (ohne Touch Bar) aufgrund eines Komponentenfehlers zum Aufblähen der integrierten Batterie kommen kann", heißt es in einer Mitteilung des Herstellers.Nutzer eines MacBooks Pro können anhand der Seriennummer online überprüfen, ob ihr Gerät für das Austauschprogramm infrage kommt. Sollte dies der Fall sein, ersetzt Apple die Batterie nach eigenen Angaben kostenlos. Das hat der Konzern auf einer Support-Seite angekündigt.

Man muss Microsoft aber zugutehalten, dass das Betriebssystem kontinuierlich zulegt und sich viele früher lästige Probleme heute einfach beheben oder umgehen lassen. Wir demonstrieren das im Video mit sieben Tipps zu Windows 10, wie man kleine Alltagsärgernisse elegant umschifft. Das ist die kurze Zusammenfassung:Der zugestellte Desktop. Zu viele Fenster verdecken die auf dem virtuellen Schreibtisch abgelegten Dateien und Dokumente, sodass die nicht mehr zugänglich sind. Doch das lässt sich einfach beheben – und zwar, indem Sie das vorderste Fenster leicht schütteln.


Alles viel zu klein. Wenn man nicht mit der Nase am Laptop kleben möchte, ist unter Umständen nicht alles sehr leicht lesbar. Windows 10 kann nun die Darstellung genau Ihren Wünschen anpassen. Sie finden die entsprechende Option in den Einstellungen bei «System» und «Anzeige» und zwar im Abschnitt «Skalierung und Anordnung».Der Akku hält nie so lange, wie man arbeiten müsste. Doch Windows verrät, welche Apps schuld daran sind, dass die Batterie viel zu schnell leer geht – und sie ermöglicht es auch, die Hintergrundaktivitäten der Programme einzuschränken. Das tun Sie in den Einstellungen bei «System» und im Abschnitt «Akku». Klicken Sie dann auf «Akkunutzung nach App» für detaillierte Informationen.


Manche Einstellungen sind viel zu gut versteckt. Die Einstellungs-App von Windows 10 ist zwar längst nicht so unübersichtlich wie die Systemsteuerung, mit der man sich früher herumschlagen musste – und sie hat eine patente Suchfunktion. Doch auch mit dieser App ist es oft umständlich, häufig benötigte Einstellungen aufzurufen. Es ist aber möglich, Konfigurationsseiten direkt ans Startmenü anzuheften. Dazu klicken Sie die gewünschte Seite, zum Beispiel «WLAN» oder den persönlichen Hotspot mit der rechten Maustaste an und wählen «An ‹Start› anheften». Sie können die Einstellungen im Startmenü wie normale Apps positionieren oder in einen Ordner legen.Neugierige Kollegen aussperren. Wer in einem Grossraumbüro oder gar in einem Newsroom arbeitet, sollte es sich zur Gewohnheit machen, den Computer auch bei kurzen Abwesenheiten immer zu sperren – um die Neugierde bei den Kollegen nicht unnötig anzustacheln. Windows 10 hat eine neue praktische Möglichkeit, das automatisch zu tun. Die heisst «Dynamische Sperre» und ist in den Einstellungen bei «Konten» unter «Anmeldeoptionen» zu finden. Windows sperrt dann den Computer, sobald das gekoppelte Mobiltelefon nicht mehr in Reichweite ist.



Damit das funktioniert, müssen Sie Ihr Telefon mit Windows verbinden. Das tun Sie in den Einstellungen bei «Geräte» im Bereich «Bluetooth und andere Geräte».Ein Video erklärt mehr als 1000 Worte. Wenn Kollegen oder Freunde Sie mit Fragen bestürmen, wie dieser Trick Programm A oder jener Kniff in Anwendung B funktioniert, dann kann es in echte Arbeit ausarten, das schlüssig zu erklären. Einfacher ist es, eine kleine Demonstration abzuhalten. Windows stellt neuerdings eine Möglichkeit zur Verfügung, Vorgänge am Bildschirm in Videos zu dokumentieren. Dazu diente die Spieleleiste – denn die ursprüngliche Idee ist, dass Videogamer ihre spielerischen Heldentaten für die Nachwelt festhalten können. Doch die Leiste funktioniert auch mit ganz normalen Programmen. Betätigen Sie die Windows-Taste und «g», um die Leiste anzuzeigen und setzen Sie bei «Ja, das ist ein Spiel» ein Häkchen. Dann braucht es nur einen Klick auf den roten Knopf, um die Aufnahme zu starten – ein Kommentar via Mikrofon ist übrigens auch möglich. Nachdem Sie die Aufnahme beendet haben, finden Sie das Video im «Video»-Ordner unter «Aufzeichnungen».


Wer malträtiert die Festplatte und lässt den Lüfter heulen? Es kommt bei Windows häufiger vor, dass der Computer eine unerklärliche Betriebsamkeit an den Tag legt. Meistens legt sich das von allein wieder, aber manchmal auch nicht. Und dann möchte man wissen, was los ist. Der Taskmanager hilft bei einer ersten Überprüfung: Klicken Sie mit der rechten Maustaste auf eine freie Stelle der Taskleiste und wählen Sie «Taskmanger» aus dem Kontextmenü. Die Option «Mehr Details» zeigt an, welche Programme aktiv sind, den Prozessor in Beschlag nehmen, von der Festplatte lesen oder sie beschreiben oder das Netzwerk verwenden – Sie können die Anwendungen übrigens entsprechend sortieren.


Im Reiter «Leistung» wird der Ressourcenbedarf noch detaillierter analysiert. Und hier finden Sie auch den unscheinbaren Link «Ressourcenmonitor öffnen». Der Ressourcenmonitor ist ein hilfreiches Analyseinstrument, weil es beispielsweise auch die Dateien anzeigt, die gerade gelesen oder geschrieben werden. Wenn man bei heftigen Aktivitäten des Betriebssystems so herausfindet, welche Dateien betroffen sind, dann liefert eine Google-Suche nach dem Namen dieser Datei oft eine schlüssige Erklärung – und unter Umständen auch einen Tipp, wie man dem Spuk ein Ende macht.Das Lenovo Yoga C930 ersetzt das Watchband-Scharnier mit einer Dolby-Atmos-Soundbar. Beim Yoga S730, das als Nachfolger des IdeaPad 720S aus unserer Bestenliste gelten darf, verspricht Lenovo, es sei "das flachste Notebook, das es je gab". Mit einer Dicke von nicht mal 12 Millimetern würde es zum Beispiel in einem Stapel Zeitschriften nicht auffallen. Dennoch verzichtet das Lenovo Yoga S730 mit einem 13,3-Zoll-Display und einem Gewicht von rund 1,2 Kilogramm nicht auf potente Hardware.Um das Gehäuse tatsächlich so flach zu bekommen, hat Lenovo ein bisschen getrickst. In der Tastatur sind zum Beispiel zusätzliche Lüftungsschlitze versteckt, damit der eigentliche Lüfter etwas kleiner sein kann. Zudem ist die Tastatur hintergrundbeleuchtet.


Obwohl es Yoga im Namen trägt, erlaubt das Scharnier nur eine Öffnung bis 180 Grad. Das Touchdisplay hat eine Diagonale von 13,3 Zoll und löst mit FullHD auf, bei der CPU hast du jedoch die Wahl zwischen einem i5 und einem i7 der jüngsten Intel-Welle. Die Konfiguration lässt des Weiteren bis zu 16 GB DDR3- und einen TB SSD-Speicher zu. Der Akku soll bis zu zehn Stunden Power liefern. Aufgrund des kompakten Designs gibt es leider keinen vollwertigen USB-Port, dafür aber drei USB-C-3.1-Anschlüsse.Das Yoga C930 ist mit 360-Grad-Scharnier ein waschechtes Convertible. Statt Watchband sitzt nun aber eine rotierende Soundbar unter dem 14-Zoll-HDR-Display, das entweder mit FullHD oder sogar UHD auflöst. Wieder gibt es entweder einen aktuellen Intel Core i5 oder einen i7 sowie bis zu 16 GB RAM und sogar zwei TB SSD-Speicher. Auch eine Vibes-Edition, wie beim Yoga 920 aus unserem Vergleich der besten Convertibles, sollte es wieder geben.
