Apple habe die allgemeine wirtschaftliche Abschwächung in dem Land und ihre Folgen unterschätzt. Zu diesem Abschwung habe auch der Handelskonflikt zwischen den USA und China beigetragen.


Aber auch in einigen entwickelten Märkten seien nicht so viele Nutzer auf neue iPhones umgestiegen wie gedacht, räumte Apple ein - ohne die Länder zu nennen. Das Weihnachtsquartal ist traditionell das wichtigste für Apple. Der Konzern stellte in diesen drei Monaten mehrfach Rekorde bei Umsatz und Gewinn auf. Im Jahr 2017 gab es einen Quartalsumsatz von 88,3 Milliarden Dollar und 20 Milliarden Dollar Gewinn. In China machte Apple damals rund ein Fünftel seines Geschäfts.


Analyst Walt Piecyk von der Finanzfirma BTIG schätzt, dass Apple im Weihnachtsquartal rund 64 Millionen iPhones verkaufen konnte. Das wären 18 Prozent weniger als vor einem Jahr. Für das laufende Quartal rechnet Piecyk mit 42,5 Millionen abgesetzten iPhones - ein Rückgang von 19 Prozent.

Der Konzern hatte bereits angekündigt, vom Weihnachtsquartal an keine Stückzahlen verkaufter Geräte mehr zu veröffentlichen - was von einigen Marktbeobachtern als Zeichen für eine Abschwächung beim iPhone-Absatz gewertet wurde. Allerdings war es Apple in der Vergangenheit immer wieder gelungen, Skeptiker zu widerlegen.


Apple-Chef Cook verwies jetzt auch darauf, dass Mobilfunk-Anbieter die Subventionen für neue Smartphones heruntergefahren hätten - und sich Verbraucher daran anpassten und seltener die Geräte auswechselten als zuvor. Zudem hätten einige Kunden die Lebenszeit ihrer iPhones mit den günstigeren Angeboten zum Batterieaustausch verlängert. Apple hatte den Preis für den Akku-Wechsel zeitweise stark gesenkt, nachdem bekannt wurde, dass der Konzern die Leistung älterer Geräte mit erschöpften Batterien zum Teil drosselte.

Zugleich seien die Verkäufe mehrerer anderer neuer Produkte wie des iPad Pro, der aktuellen Apple Watch und des Laptops MacBook Air durch Produktionsengpässe gebremst worden, erklärte Cook.

Ein Stromausfall mitten im Winter - schlimmer geht es kaum. In Osnabrück müssen Mieter eines Mehrfamilienhauses schon seit Mitte Januar ohne Strom leben - und damit ohne Heizung und Licht.Daniela Gallien geht durch den stockfinsteren Flur zu ihrer Wohnung. Ihre Taschenlampe schwenkt sie hin und her, bis sie das Schloss ihrer Wohnungstür gefunden hat. „Man kommt sich vor wie ein Einbrecher“, sagt die 43-Jährige. Dabei ist sie Mieterin in dem dunklen Mehrfamilienhaus im Osnabrücker Stadtteil Wüste. Seit gut zwei Wochen müssen sie und gut 40 andere Mietparteien auf Strom verzichten - und das im tiefsten Winter. Auch Alte und Pflegebedürftige wohnen in dem Haus.


Am 16. Januar stand Wasser im Keller, das eine Verpuffung und einen Kurzschluss verursacht hat. Seitdem geht im Haus nichts mehr: Keine Klingel, kein Aufzug, kein Licht, kein Telefon, keine Heizung. Die Eigentümer warteten auf eine Entscheidung der Versicherung, den Schaden zu übernehmen. Nun steht fest: Die Versicherung zahlt nicht.


13 bis 14 Grad in der Wohnung

Draußen sind nachts Minusgrade, tagsüber klettert das Thermometer auf knapp über Null. In Galliens Wohnung sind es 13 bis 14 Grad. „Ich habe mir einen Gasofen besorgt und einen Gasherd“, erzählt sie. Auch andere Mieter in dem Haus haben inzwischen zu dieser Notlösung gegriffen - anders geht es nicht. „Nachts mache ich den Ofen natürlich aus, aus Sicherheitsgründen.“ Wegen der Gasflamme muss auch regelmäßig gelüftet werden. „Dann kommt wieder kalte Luft in die Wohnung“, sagt Gallien.


Bei einem guten Freund im Nachbarhaus könne sie duschen und die Wäsche waschen. Sie sieht zu, dass sie ihr Handy und einen alten Laptop außerhalb des Hauses aufgeladen bekommt. „Der Laptop-Akku reicht, um einen Film zu gucken“, sagt sie. Vor das Fenster hat sie einen dicken Vorhang gezogen - das dämmt ein wenig.

Das Mehrfamilienhaus gehört einer Eigentümergemeinschaft. Einen der Eigentümer trifft Gallien an der Haustür. Seinen Namen möchte er nicht in den Medien lesen, sagt der Mann. „Sie können sich aber vorstellen, dass die Eigentümer äußerst bestürzt über die Situation sind“, versichert er. Am Donnerstag soll wieder die Eigentümerversammlung zusammenkommen. „Dann wird es eine Entscheidung geben“, verspricht er.


Bislang habe es bei den Eigentümern keine Mehrheitsentscheidung gegeben, damit ein Handwerkerbetrieb mit der Schadensbeseitigung beauftragt werden kann. Ein erstes Gutachten sehe eine Schadenshöhe von 51 000 Euro vor, sagt der Eigentümer. Es sei schwierig, überhaupt Handwerker zu finden. „Die meisten geben erst gar kein Angebot ab“, sagt er. Er hoffe, dass die einzige Firma, die für den Auftrag bereit gewesen ist, auch zu ihrem Wort stehe und mit großer Mannzahl zu dem Einsatz anrücke. In ein paar Tagen könnte es dann wieder Strom geben.


„Selber Schuld, dass sie hier wohnen“

Einige Mieter sind wütend über ihre Eigentümer. Auf einer ersten Eigentümerversammlung seien Worte gefallen wie „Selber Schuld, dass sie hier wohnen“, ärgert sich Gallien. Sogar das Wasser hätten einige abstellen wollen. Der Miteigentümer selber will davon nichts wissen. „Alle Eigentümer wollen, dass der Schaden so schnell wie möglich beseitigt wird - das ist doch für niemanden zumutbar.“ Auch eine Mietminderung sei aus seiner Sicht selbstverständlich. „Ich habe meiner Mieterin gesagt, sie braucht mir für die nächsten zwei Monate gar nichts zu überweisen“, sagt er und geht zum Auto - eine Gasflasche für eine Notheizung aus dem Wagen holen.



Gallien macht sich unterdessen auf dem Weg zu ihrem Anwalt. Sie will sich Rat holen, ob sie die Miete mindern oder sogar Schadenersatz fordern kann.Apple muss sich der Realität stellen: Ausgerechnet im wichtigen Weihnachtsquartal verfehlt der erfolgsverwöhnte Konzern seine eigene Prognose. Das Problem seien vor allem die iPhone-Verkäufe in China gewesen, erklärt Firmenchef Tim Cook.

Battery Life

No matter which Dell XPS 13 9370 configuration you choose, you'll get above-average battery life, but a model with the 1080p non-touch screen lasts several hours longer. The XPS 13 9370 with 1080p non-touch screen lasted 12 hours and 37 minutes on the Laptop Battery Test, which involves continuous surfing over Wi-Fi. The model with the 4K display endured for 8 hours and 53 minutes. Those numbers compare favorably to the ultraportable category average (8:16) and the HP Spectre 13's time of 6:16.

However, Dell's slightly older XPS 9360 with 1080p screen lasted a much-longer 16 hours and 5 minutes on our test. That's because, in making its laptop thinner and lighter, Dell switched from a 60 watt-hour battery on the 9360 to a 52 watt-hour unit on the 9370.


Both XPS 13 9370 configurations we tried stayed pleasantly cool throughout our testing. After streaming a video for 15 minutes, the touchpad, keyboard and bottom of the Core i7-powered model hit 82, 86.5 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit, all well below our 95-degree comfort threshold. The Core i5 model got similar temperatures of 80, 85.5 and 88 degrees.

Dell's Power Manager app allows you to configure the laptop's thermal management for maximum performance, lowest temperature or least noise. We used the default, Optimized setting during most of our testing, and the laptop always felt cool to the touch. However, when we switched to the "Ultra Performance" mode we got slightly higher scores, but the top of the keyboard hit 115 degrees.

We recommend the $1,099 model, which includes a Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. The tricked-out, $1,869 model has a 4K touch screen, a Core i7-8550U CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. A 512GB SSD costs $150 more and a 1TB SSD runs $750.

If battery life is your highest priority, get a model with the 1080p non-touch screen, but the vibrant colors on the 4K panel make it an even more attractive choice.

Ob bei einem Flüssigkeitsschaden auch die Daten baden gehen, hängt vom Laptopmodell und der Ersten Hilfe danach ab.


"Festplatten sind meistens so gut geschützt, dass sie in fast allen Fällen keinen Schaden nehmen", sagt Stefan Ebelt vom Verein ReUse in Berlin. "Trifft aber genug Flüssigkeit auf eines der Bauelemente im Laptop, können diese einem Kurzschluss erliegen und sind defekt." Mit etwas Pech kann das eine fatale Kettenreaktion auslösen: Geht ein Teil kaputt, könne das andere Bauelemente mitreißen.


Dann kann guter Rat teuer werden. "Einen Kurzschluss beziehungsweise die zerstörten Bauelemente zu finden und eventuell zu ersetzen, kann teilweise unmöglich sein", sagt Ebelt. "Den Technikern bleibt nichts Anderes übrig, als alle Komponenten im Notebook zu testen."


Das Malheur mit dem Wasserglas lässt sich zwar nicht rückgängig machen. Doch wenn der Rechner baden geht, kann man mit schneller Reaktion immerhin den Schaden begrenzen und Kurzschlüsse vermeiden, sagt Stefan Ebelt.Im ersten Schritt muss das Notebook vom Netz. Besser noch, man macht es komplett stromlos. Das heißt: Sofort ausschalten, Netzkabelstecker ziehen und - wenn möglich - den Akku entfernen.



Ist nur wenig Flüssigkeit über das Gerät gelaufen, sollte man es unbedingt gerade stehen lassen, rät Ebelt. Ist die Computerüberschwemmung größer, kann der Rechner vorsichtig gekippt werden, so dass die Flüssigkeit herauslaufen kann. Mit einem Handtuch oder Küchenpapier wird sichtbare und herauslaufende Flüssigkeit vorsichtig aufgesaugt.


Wer auf Nummer sicher gehen will, kann den Laptop trocknen - etwa auf der Heizung. Die Temperatur sollte aber auf keinen Fall über 40 Grad Celsius liegen.


Und auch danach kann sich noch Wasser zwischen einzelnen Bauteilen oder Kontakten befinden. Um Kurzschlüsse zu vermeiden, sollte der Rechner deswegen auf keinen Fall wieder angeschaltet werden. In einem Fachgeschäft für IT-Technik ist er vorerst besser aufgehoben. Elektrofachmärkte seien weniger geeignet, sagt Ebelt. Die Computer-Experten entscheiden dann, wie es weitergeht: Trocknung, Reinigung oder Reparatur? Je nachdem, wie viel Flüssigkeit und vor allem welches Getränk ausgeschüttet wurde, ist die Reparatur mehr oder weniger aufwendig. Klebrige Getränke wie Säfte oder Cola sind deutlich schwieriger zu entfernen als klares Mineralwasser. Wird ausgelaufene Milch nicht restlos beseitigt, kann das später übel riechen.


Neben Erster Hilfe in Sachen Schadensminimierung muss auch die Schadensregulierung angegangen werden. Ist der Laptop versichert oder gehört er Freunden, springt eventuell die Versicherung ein. Dann sollte man den Schaden schon vor der Reparatur dem Versicherer melden, rät Kathrin Jarosch vom Gesamtverband der Deutschen Versicherungswirtschaft. "Schäden, die Sie selbst an Ihrem Laptop verursachen, können Sie über eine spezielle Laptopversicherung regulieren", erklärt die Expertin. Anders ist das, wenn das Getränk über den Computer eines Freundes oder Arbeitskollegen ausgekippt wurde. Dann springt die private Haftpflichtversicherung ein.



Wer die Wahl hat zwischen Haftpflicht- und Elektronikversicherung, sollte laut Lisa Högden von der Verbraucherzentrale Brandenburg den Schaden von der Elektronikversicherung bezahlen lassen. "Sie ersetzt den Wiederbeschaffungswert, also den Neupreis, den man heute für dieses Gerät bezahlen müsste. Die Haftpflichtversicherung zahlt dagegen nur den Zeitwert, etwa den heute erzielbaren Preis für das alte schadlose Gerät", sagt sie.


In wenigen Fällen könne die Reparatur nach einem Flüssigkeitsschaden sogar unter die Garantieleistungen fallen, sagt Lisa Högden. Ob das der Fall ist, könne am besten ein Fachgeschäft entscheiden, ergänzt Technikexperte Stefan Ebelt.

On the most basic level, 5G stands for the fifth-generation wireless cellular standard. Fotos, Videos und Spiele: Die Anforderungen an Computermonitore wachsen. Doch auch für den Bürogebrauch gibt es preisgünstige Geräte. Worauf Käufer bei einer Neuanschaffung achten sollten. Wer sich einen neuen Computermonitor kaufen möchte, kann unter anderem zwischen drei Arten wählen: LCD, QLED und OLED. Welcher Monitortyp der Beste sei, hänge vor allem vom eigenen Nutzerverhalten ab, erklärt Tüv Süd-Experte Florian Hockel.


Doch auch der Preis könne stark variieren. Die derzeit gebräuchlichsten und günstigsten Monitore seien LCD-Monitore mit einer schnellen Reaktionszeit bei kleinerem Farbspektrum – Voraussetzung für ein ruckelfreies Bild. "Dies ist auch bei gemischter und gelegentlicher Nutzung wichtig, um etwa einen YouTube- oder Nachrichtenbeitrag anzusehen, bei welchem es nicht vordringlich um eine hervorragende Bildqualität geht", erklärt Hockel.



Ein kleineres Farbspektrum ist demnach für Büroanwendungen und eine gemischte Nutzung ausreichend. Das kann die hobbymäßige Foto- oder Videobearbeitung sein, oder wenn man gelegentlich Filme schaut. Hier eignen sich 24- und 27-Zoll-Monitore mit der gängigen Auflösung von 1.920 mal 1.080 oder 2.560 mal 1.440 Pixel.


Filmfans und Gamer können von teureren Monitoren profitieren

"QLED-Monitore liegen preislich, verglichen mit LCD-Monitoren, um 20 bis 50 Prozent höher, je nach Größe und Auflösung. Die Investition lohnt sich vor allem für Gamer, Filmfans, Bild- und Video-bearbeitende Berufe", so Hockel. Gerade diese würden auch von schnellen und großen Monitoren ab 48 Zoll aufwärts profitieren.

Am teuersten sind derzeit noch OLED-Monitore, die ihren technischen Vorteil vor allem bei dunklen Szenen ausspielen können. "Hier wird ganz klar der Gaming-Aspekt und der Kontrast in den Vordergrund gerückt", so Hockel. Filmfans und Gamer seien auch diejenigen, die für diese Optimierungsoption Geld ausgeben.


Seit Juli beobachten Sicherheitsexperten, wie sich die Malware "Nodersok" auf immer mehr Windows-Rechner schleicht. Dazu reicht ein unbedachter Klick im Browser. Microsoft zeigt sich beunruhigt und mahnt Nutzer zur Vorsicht.

Um die Startzeit Ihrer Hardware zu verbessern, können Sie versuchen, im BIOS beziehungsweise UEFI die Boot-Reihenfolge zu ändern. Von Vorteil für die Startgeschwindigkeit ist es, die Festplatte auf der Windows installiert ist, nach oben zu verschieben.


Dafür gehen Sie zunächst einmal ins BIOS. Dafür müssen Sie den Rechner neu starten. Direkt nach dem Neustart drücken Sie entweder F2, F8, F10, Entf oder Esc. Die richtige Taste variiert je nach Hersteller. Probieren Sie also entweder alle Tasten durch oder suchen Sie im Internet nach der BIOS-Taste Ihres PC-Herstellers. Im Boot-Bereich gehen Sie auf "Boot" und danach auf "Boot Device Priority". Auf Deutsch könnte das so etwas wie "Boot-Reihenfolge anpassen" heißen. Dort sehen Sie die Hardware, die zuerst gebootet wird, an erster Stelle. Verschieben Sie in diesem Fall mit den Pfeiltasten Ihre Windows-Festplatte nach oben. Anschließend verlassen Sie das BIOS und speichern dabei Ihre Änderungen.


Windows-Start analysieren

Sie können sich über die Windows-Ereignisanzeige in den Startvorgang Einblicke geben lassen. Geben Sie dafür in der Suchmaske im Startbereich "Ereignisanzeige" ein. Dort klicken Sie sich über die Ordner "Anwendungs- und Dienstprotokolle", "Microsoft" und "Windows" zur "Diagnostics-Performance" durch, wo Sie anschließend "öffnen" anklicken. Dort suchen Sie die Ereignis-ID 100. Scrollen Sie zu "Startdauer" herunter, Sie bekommen üblicherweise in Millisekunden die Länge des Startvorgangs angezeigt.


Apps deinstallieren

Ein vollgemüllter PC ist eine typische Ursache für Startschwierigkeiten. Programme, die man nicht mehr braucht, zu entfernen, hilft daher immer. Suchen Sie in Ihrer Suchmaske nach "Apps & Features", dann finden Sie eine Liste all Ihrer installierten Programme. Klicken Sie eine App an und gehen Sie auf "deinstallieren", um sie zu entfernen. Das funktioniert allerdings nur mit Programmen, die nicht von Windows vorinstalliert sind.



Auf jeden Fall sollten Sie auf Ihrem PC den Schnellstart aktivieren, wenn dieser noch nicht aktiviert ist. Dafür gehen Sie in Ihre Systemsteuerung. Dort gehen Sie auf "Hardware und Sound" und anschließend auf "Energieoptionen". Dort finden Sie den Unterpunkt "Netzschalterverhalten ändern". Im anschließenden Fenster prüfen Sie, ob "Schnellstart aktiviert" markiert ist.


Energiesparmodus/Ruhezustand

Sie können das Ärgernis eines langsamen Starts aber auch einfach vermeiden, indem Sie den Rechner gar nicht erst komplett herunterfahren und stattdessen in den Energiesparmodus oder den Ruhezustand schalten. Aus diesem Modi erwacht Ihr Gerät schnell, und Sie können Ihre Arbeit genau wieder da aufnehmen, wo Sie aufgehört haben.

Microsoft sieht das Problem offenbar als weniger dringlich an. Um die Treiber-Schwachstelle ausnutzen zu können, müsste der Computer bereits mit Schadsoftware infiziert sein. Der Software-Konzern empfiehlt seinen Nutzern den Windows Defender, um sich gegen Hackerangriffe zu schützen und unsichere Treiber zu blockieren.


Edeka bietet derzeit günstige Lizenzschlüssel für Microsoft-Produkte an. Kunden können dabei mehr als 200 Euro sparen. Doch wie legal sind die Angebote?In vielen Edeka-Supermärkten finden sich derzeit günstige Lizenzschlüssel für Microsoft-Produkte wie Windows 10. Das berichtet das Computermagazin "c’t".



Die Angebote unterbieten dabei die unverbindlichen Preisempfehlungen von Microsoft deutlich: So kostet ein Aktivierungsschlüssel für Windows 10 Pro 39,99 Euro statt 259 Euro. MS Office 2019 Home & Student gibt es für 104,99 Euro statt 149 Euro. Selbst Windows 7 Professional wird angeboten: für 17,99 Euro. Der Support für Privatkunden von Windows 7 wird dabei Anfang Januar 2020 eingestellt.


Laut "c’t" kaufen Kunden bei Edeka eine sogenannte Lizengo-Card und erhalten an der Kasse eine zwölfstellige PIN. Auf der Website von Lizengo erhalten Kunden über die PIN die gekaufte Software und einen Aktivierungsschlüssel.Auf Anfrage von "c’t" erklärte Lizengo, dass es sich bei den Schlüsseln um unbenutzte Lizenzen handele, die aus Überbeständen von Microsoft-Kunden stammten.


Im Test von "c’t" ließen sich die gekauften Produkte nahezu problemlos installieren und aktivieren. Wer dennoch Probleme mit seinem Schlüssel haben sollte, soll laut Lizengo einen neuen erhalten.Ist das Angebot legal?

Auf Anfrage von "c’t" gab Microsoft keine eindeutige Auskunft darüber, ob das Unternehmen das Angebot von Lizengo als legal oder nicht bewertet. Der Konzern verwies aber auf Urteile des Europäischen Gerichtshofs und des Bundesgerichtshofs, die den Verkauf von Lizenzschlüsseln durch Lizengo nicht als illegal einstufen.


Allerdings kann Microsoft solche gekauften Aktivierungsschlüssel durch Updates blockieren. Die "c’t" rät Nutzern daher, den Kassenzettel aufzubewahren, um bei Lizenzproblemen innerhalb der Gewährleistungsfrist das Geld zurückverlangen zu können. Die Gewährleistungsfrist beträgt zwei Jahre.



Wie Sie Windows 10 noch kostenlos erhalten

Obwohl Microsoft das nicht offiziell so kommuniziert, lassen sich derzeit Windows-7-Rechner noch mittels des Media Creation Tool direkt von der Microsoft-Website auf Windows 10 upgraden. Das Tool kann auch einen USB-Stick erstellen, um Windows 10 auf beliebigen Rechnern neu zu installieren. Wie das geht, lesen Sie hier (untere Hälfte des Artikels) oder in dieser Fotoshow.


Bei der Installation akzeptiert Windows 10 auch weiterhin Windows-7-Lizenzschlüssel, die auf der ursprünglichen Verpackung des Betriebssystems oder auf einem Microsoft-Aufkleber auf dem Rechner aufgedruckt sind. Auch mit Windows-8.1-Schlüsseln funktioniert das Upgrade noch.

The XPS 15 with a 1080p display can conduct a master class on endurance. The notebook lasted 11 hours and 53 minutes on our battery test, which consists of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. It easily outlasted the 8:26 category average, the Spectre x360 (5:20), the MateBook X (9:55) and the MacBook Pro (10:21). The Surface Book came closest to matching the winner with a time of 11:34, which dropped to 3:12 when we tested the tablet on its own.


As expected, the 4K display and Core i9 CPU take a toll on battery life, but even the decked-out XPS 15 lasted a respectable 7 hours and 34 minutes on our test.Despite its metallic lid and undercarriage, the XPS 15 did a good job of staying cool. When we measured key points of the laptop after streaming a full-screen HD video for 15 minutes, the touchpad hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The center of the keyboard reached 83 degrees, while the bottom registered 92 degrees. Each measurement was well within our 95-degree comfort threshold.

While I appreciate super-slim bezels, Dell and other companies have to find a better place for the webcam than positioned right above the hinge. When I launched the camera app, the "nose cam" lived up to its name, capturing my chest and nose in the shot. It took quite a bit of adjusting on my part to get an appropriate angle.


Still, the XPS 15's integrated camera managed to perfectly capture the color in my bright pink dress. Details were sharp enough to capture some pilling on the garment as well as striations in the fabric.Dell pre-installed several helpful branded utilities, including Power Manager, which allows you to run diagnostics on the system's battery as well as adjust fan speed and power consumption for more demanding tasks. Mobile Connect lets you access your smartphone from your laptop, including calling a Lyft or playing a mobile game like Futurama: Game of Drones. If you need to troubleshoot an issue, Dell also included Help & Support, which features informative videos, shows your warranty status and runs system diagnostics.



Unfortunately, the system has its fair share of bloatware, including Cooking Fever, Candy Crush Saga, Royal Revolt 2: Tower Defense and Netflix. There are, however, more useful third-party applications such as Killer Control Center, which lets you prioritize network bandwidth. Dell also included McAfee Security, and 20GB of cloud storage via Dropbox for a year.

Productivity, multimedia and even a bit of gaming -- the Dell XPS 15 can do it all -- and do it well. For $1,399, you get a system that has an attractive, slim design that's bursting with power, including an Intel Core i7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q. The keyboard is surprisingly comfortable, and the display is simply lovely. Throw in nearly 12 hours of battery life, and you've got a certified beast. When I played AC/DC's "For Those About to Rock," the music was loud enough to fill a small room, but it was tinny.The Envy 13t's keyboard is so good that it alone makes this laptop a compelling option for students or productivity workers. Competitors take note; HP has shown that, even on a very-thin laptop, you can have a world-class typing experience. Though the keys have a modest 1.2 millimeters of travel (1.5 to 2mm is typical for mainstream laptops), they have such a snappy, responsive feel that I never found myself bottoming out. The keys felt so much like an extension of my finger tips that I was able to match my all-time high of 110 words per minute on the 10FastFingers.com typing test.


The 4.3 x 2.1-inch buttonless touchpad was highly accurate,whether I was highlighting text or navigating around the desktop. With its Intel 8th Gen Core i7-8550U, 8GB of RAM and 256GB PCIe SSD, our review configuration of the Envy 13t offered a plethora of performance, both in everyday use and benchmark tests. Even with over a dozen Chrome tabs open and a video playing, I didn't experience even a hint of lag.



The Envy 13t scored a strong mark of 12,225 on Geekbench 4, a synthetic benchmark. The Core i5 version of the XPS 13 notched 13,254 on this test, while the Surface Laptop 2 with a Core i5 chip hit 12,676. The less powerful Y Series processor in the MacBook Air scored under 8,000.

The laptop's 256GB PCIe SSD took just 24 seconds to copy 4.97GB of mixed media files. That's a comfortable rate of 212 MBps, which would dwarf any laptop with a mechanical hard drive or a slower SSD. Still, the premium laptop average is closer to 500 MBps now.


With its integrated Intel UHD 620 GPU on-board, the Envy 13t can't replace a gaming rig, but it can play videos and run less-demanding titles. When we fired up the Dirt 3 racing game, HP's laptop managed a strong frame rate of 48 fps, which is more than playable. However, the XPS 13 hit 57 fps and the Surface Laptop 2 reached 82 fps.


On 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited, a synthetic graphics test, the Envy 13t scored a fairly strong 77,685.The Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 scored a lower 71,647. The XPS 13 (77,584) was in the same ballpark as the HP.If you're heading to work or school, the Envy 13t can tag along while you leave its charger at home. The laptop lasted a strong 9 hours and 46 minutes on the Laptop Battery Test, which involves continuous surfing over Wi-Fi. That's better than the Surface Latop 2 (9:22) and MacBook Air (9:32), but the Dell XPS 13 lasted a much longer 11:59.



The Envy 13t's 720p camera is good enough to use for Skype calls, but if you are podcasting or making a really important call, you'll want to invest in an external webcam. When I shot an image of myself under the flourescent lights of my office, the blue in my shirt appeared dull and flat and fine details like the hairs in my beard and pores in my skin were impossible to distinguish. The image was very bright, but there was a lot of visual noise in the background.

Die Anlage, die noch vor einem halben Jahr auf dem achten Platz rangierte – das "NG" steht für "Next Generation" – steht Forschern aus ganz Europa zur Verfügung, die etwa in Bereichen der Astro- und Festkörper-Physik, in der Medizin oder der Katastrophen- und Umweltforschung arbeiten.


Die "Top 500"-Liste wird seit 26 Jahren halbjährlich zur Supercomputer Conference veröffentlicht, die diesmal in Frankfurt am Main stattfindet. Sie gilt noch immer als wichtige Messlatte in der Branche.

Manche Kritiker halten die Art der Messung jedoch nicht mehr für zeitgemäß. Der sogenannte Linpack-Benchmark ermittelt zwar die Schnelligkeit, aber nicht die Rechen-Effizienz einer Anlage. Bei komplizierten Berechnungen wie Simulationen in der Klimaforschung oder dem maschinellen Lernen geht es aber nicht mehr allein um eine schnelle Berechnung, sondern um eine für die verschiedenen Arbeitsschritte optimierte Nutzung der Rechenleistung.


Nach dem Juni-Update für Windows 10 klagen manche Nutzer über einen Fehler: Der Rechner zeigt beim Starten nur einen schwarzen Bildschirm. Microsoft nennt nun eine Lösung für das Problem.



Am 11. Juni veröffentlichte Microsoft ein Update für Windows 10. Die Aktualisierung löst einige Fehler, beispielsweise bei der Darstellung der Mixed-Reality-Tastatur. Gleichzeitig klagen jedoch manche Nutzer über ein neues Problem: Wenn sie den Rechner starten, erscheint ein schwarzer Bildschirm statt die Windows-Oberfläche. Das berichtet "WinFuture".


Auch auf seiner Support-Seite listet Microsoft das Problem. Betroffen sind Systeme mit der Windows-10-Version 1803 (Update KB4503286) und der Windows-10-Version 1809 (Update KB4503327).


Wer vom Fehler betroffen ist, soll die Tasten Strg+Alt+Entf drücken, dann den Power-Button in der rechten unteren Ecke des Bildschirms wählen und den Rechner so neustarten. Laut Microsoft soll das Gerät nun normal starten und das Problem nicht wieder auftauchen.


Bevor Sie ein Notebook kaufen, sollten Sie sich bewusst machen, wofür Sie das Gerät brauchen. Dann können Sie ihre Auswahl beim Einkauf leichter eingrenzen. Worauf Sie achten können, wenn die Entscheidung schwerfällt.

After all, if we can rip away the bad economics from politics then we might even get very different breed of political leader.When Apple announced updates to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro in early July, most of the attention was paid to easy-to-spot differences: The lower price on the Air, the always-there Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro, and the Pro's entry-level jump from dual-core to quad-core processors.


We already know the updates have paid off for the $1,299 MacBook Pro -- our initial testing shows a nice speed jump over the older dual-core, entry-level Pro, but what about battery life?It's an especially important question, given that Apple's laptops were once the undisputed kings of laptop battery life. These days, the competition has more than caught up, with laptops like the LG Gram and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon passing 13 hours of online streaming video time.


At the same time, Apple just squeaks into our battery-life Top 15 with the current 15-inch MacBook Pro, thanks to a big body that has room for a big battery that runs for a very respectable 11.5 hours on the same test. Naturally, the first thing we did with the new MacBook Air (now $100 cheaper!) and the new MacBook Pro is to run down each of the batteries multiple times in our streaming video battery test. Here are the results, plus battery results for previous MacBooks and a sample high-end 13-inch Windows laptop, the excellent Dell XPS 13.



As we saw in our initial performance testing, now expanded, the quad-core Pro and the similarly configured XPS 13 are the speedier systems, and the jump in CPU options for the MacBook Pro is probably the biggest story here. You may not care about getting a Touch Bar added on (or losing your physical function keys), but this is clearly a big leap in value for the same $1,299 entry price.


The slimmer Air, with its less-power-hungry (and less powerful) Y-series Intel processor, is the battery leader in this roundup. It's the same processor as the 2018 version, and the 2018 Air/2019 Air battery life scores were just seven minutes apart, so it's essentially unchanged at 10:39 for the new 2019 model. Slipping in right below is the new U-series quad-core MacBook Pro, at 10:32, so again, very little daylight between them.


It is, however, a nice jump over the last dual-core, no-Touch-Bar MacBook Pro we've tested, back in 2017. Since then, we've only tested higher-end Touch Bar models. The takeaway is, if you're trying to decide between a new MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, they both get around 10.5 hours of streaming video battery life, so you won't have to choose battery life at the expense of power, price, features or design.
