The XPS 17 is shown next to it, featuring those same design choices. There are, however, no USB-A ports on either model. Like Apple, it looks like Dell might be going with all USB-C for both charging and data across the lineup. This lines up well with Intel’s announcement that Comet Lake-H would now support four Thunderbolt 3 ports on Windows 10 laptops.


Other companies have recently shown interest in reviving the market for 17-inch laptops. HP will be launching a new Envy 17, with a slim-bezel display and Intel’s latest 10th-generation processors. LG also has the Gram 17, which is one of the thinnest 17-inch laptops currently available.

Even Apple recently launched a big-screen laptop, retiring the 15-inch MacBook Pro in favor of a 16-inch model. Dell would certainly have some competition, to say the least.


Laptops get tossed around during travel. Between TSA, fitting in extra work pre-flight, and bouncing around in the overhead storage, having the right bag is a must. So, what should you look for in a laptop travel bag?

"Natürlich ist Maschinenlernen nicht so simpel, dass man jede Menge Daten ins Smartphone lädt und es dann eine Lösung ausspuckt", sagt Vecchione. Die Grundinformationen, mit denen Computer gefüttert werden, um dann zu lernen, was aus den Daten zu schließen ist, müssten sehr präzise entwickelt werden. In vielen Bereichen fehle es auch einfach an genügend Daten, sagt Zurutuza. Manchmal seien Erkenntnisse aus Daten nicht auf die ganze Bevölkerung zu übertragen. Vecchione und Zurutuza sehen aber beide enormes Potenzial.


"Künstliche Intelligenz bietet ungeahnte Möglichkeiten, Hunger und Armut auszuradieren und den Verfall der Natur aufzuhalten", sagt Chaesub Lee, Direktor für Standardisierung bei der Internationalen Fernmeldeunion (ITU), die die Konferenz in Genf veranstaltet.


Die USA und Deutschland setzen sich für die Förderung künstlicher Intelligenz ein. Die US-Regierung plant einen KI-Gipfel während die Bundesrepublik die Gründung einer KI-Kommission eingeleitet hat.



Die US-Regierung hat für Donnerstag ein Treffen mit führenden Technologie- und Industriekonzernen zur Zukunft der Künstlichen Intelligenz (KI) angekündigt. Bei dem eintägigen Treffen solle über Forschung, Innovation und einen Abbau von Hindernissen bei der Anwendung von KI gesprochen werden, hieß es am Dienstag in einer gemeinsamen Ankündigung von Industrie und Regierung.


Auf Wirtschaftsseite sollen Facebook, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, der SAP-Konkurrent Oracle, Intel, Ford, Boeing, Mastercard und Accenture teilnehmen. Die Regierung schickt Vertreter der Ministerien für Verteidigung, Handel, Landwirtschaft, Energie, Gesundheit und Verkehr.


Zahlreiche Staaten forcieren gegenwärtig ihre Bemühungen auf dem Gebiet der Künstlichen Intelligenz. Bundesforschungsministerin Anja Karliczek kündigte jüngst in einem Interview der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters an, die Entwicklung energisch vorantreiben zu wollen.


Union und SPD setzen Kommission ein

Deshalb will auch die große Koalition Chancen und Risiken des tiefgreifenden Wandels durch Künstliche Intelligenz umfassend untersuchen und diskutieren lassen. Dazu setzten die Spitzen der Bundestagsfraktionen von Union und SPD am Dienstag bei einer Klausurtagung im bayerischen Murnau eine Fachkommission ein.


"Das kann auch viele neuartige Arbeitsplätze bringen", sagte CSU-Landesgruppenchef Alexander Dobrindt. So zeigte der renommierte Robotikforscher Sami Haddadin von der Technischen Universität München bei der Klausur einen Prototypen, der zum Beispiel Mobiltelefone zusammenbauen kann. Damit könne man solche Dinge wieder wirtschaftlich in Deutschland fertigen, sagte Haddadin.



Dafür wiederum braucht man zum Beispiel Programmierer. "Es ist kinderleicht, das System zu programmieren, das können Facharbeiter, selbst Kinder können das", sagt Haddadin. "Das ist die Demokratisierung einer mit künstlicher Intelligenz ausgestatteten Maschine."


Haddadin hatte den mit 250.000 Euro dotierten Zukunftspreis 2017 erhalten, für einen Roboter, der feinfühlig auf Kontakt oder Berührung reagiert – und dadurch nicht nur in der Industrie einsetzbar wird, sondern auch in der Unterstützung älterer, kranker oder behinderter Menschen. Bisher war im direkten Kontakt mit Menschen die Gefahr der Verletzung durch Roboter groß, wenn sie nicht auf Berührung reagierten.

Martin Fischer vom Fachportal "Heise Online" hat vor allem einen Grund für die Preisspirale identifiziert: Kryptomining, also das Erzeugen von Kryptowährungen wie Ethereum oder Bitcoin, die zeitweise schon wertvoller als Gold waren. "Weil man diese wertvolle Kryptowährung mit eigener Hardware schürfen kann, haben sich viele Menschen dazu entschieden, genau das zu tun", erklärt Fischer. Alles, was man dazu braucht, sind Grafikkarten.


Vor allem in Ostasien haben sich Fischer zufolge industrieartige Anlagen gebildet, die Tausende Grafikkarten schürfen lassen. Schnell lernen die sogenannten Kryptofarmen, dass einige Modelle besser geeignet sind als andere. "Ideale Grafikkarten müssen eine gewisse Rechenleistung bieten, damit die Kryptoeinheiten relativ flott erzeugt werden können", sagt der Experte. "Gleichzeitig dürfen sie keine allzu hohe Leistungsaufnahme haben, weil das den Stromverbrauch hochtreibt, wenn viele Grafikkarten zusammengeschaltet werden."


Das führt dazu, dass Farmen mit ihren Großeinkäufen für Engpässe auf dem Markt sorgen und die Preise steigen können. "Das Problem dabei ist natürlich, dass es nur eine endliche Zahl von Grafikkarten und Chips gibt, die auf dem Markt sind", führt Fischer aus. "Die Hersteller AMD und Nvidia produzieren festgelegte Mengen, die vorher genau kalkuliert und an der Nachfrage orientiert werden." Die riesige Nachfrage habe dazu geführt, dass die Karten teurer wurden und ihre Verfügbarkeit deutlich abnahm.


"Nicht absehbar, dass es billiger wird"

Doch Kryptomining trägt nicht die alleinige Schuld an der Verteuerung. Wie Fischer erklärt, habe sich zudem einer der beiden größten Grafikkarten-Hersteller quasi selbst ein Bein gestellt: "AMD veröffentlichte im August 2017 eine neue Grafikkartenserie namens Radeon RX Vega. Diese Karten haben eine besondere Speichertechnik namens High Bandwith Memory (HBM), die die Speicherchips nicht mehr nebeneinander anordnet, sondern übereinander stapelt, was die Leistung der Karten erhört."



Das sei zwar eine spannende Technik, aber die Hersteller von HBM-Speicher konnten nicht so schnell produzieren, wie es für die Massenproduktion dieser AMD-Grafikkarten notwendig gewesen wäre, erklärt Fischer. "Insgesamt hatte das zur Folge, dass beispielsweise die Grafikkarte Radeon RX Vega 56 für einen Preis von 400 Euro angesetzt wurde." Tatsächlich liegt der Einstiegspreis nun aber bei 620 Euro – 55 Prozent mehr also. "Und da ist auch nicht absehbar, dass das deutlich billiger wird", so Fischer weiter.


Leistungsfähigste Modelle kaufen

Dass es zu einfach wäre, die Gründe für die Verteuerung der Grafikkarten allein aufs Kryptomining zu schieben, denkt auch Alan Priestly vom Marktforschungsunternehmen Gartner. Er verweist etwa auf die Weiterentwicklung von Computerspielen, die zunehmend höhere Anforderungen stellen: "Die Auflösungen steigen, die Bildschirme werden größer, die angezeigten Bilder pro Sekunde schießen in die Höhe. Um das ordentlich darzustellen, braucht man leistungsfähige Grafikkarten – und die sind nun mal teurer als die alten Modelle."


Trotzdem kann sich etwa Martin Fischer durchaus vorstellen, dass die Preise der Grafikkarten wieder sinken, wenn das Kryptomining an eine unweigerliche Grenze stößt: "Die Frage ist, wie es mit dem Ethereum-Kurs weitergeht. Bei Bitcoin war der Schürfenthusiasmus anfangs sehr hoch, und irgendwann hat die Leistung der Grafikkarten nicht mehr ausgereicht, damit man lohnend Bitcoins schürfen konnte, weil die Berechnungen immer komplexer werden mussten, um neue Einheiten zu finden. Das wird bei Ethereum ähnlich sein."



Bis es so weit ist, rät Marktforscher Priestly: "Greifen Sie wenn möglich tief in die Tasche und kaufen Sie direkt das leistungsfähigste Modell, das Sie sich leisten können. Das ist zwar teuer, so haben Sie aber auch eine Grafikkarte mit möglichst hoher Halbwertszeit."

Microsoft may have created and refined the most popular operating system for computers a long time ago, but the software giant took its sweet time when creating its own PC hardware. Despite launching just a few years back, Microsoft’s Surface line of tablets and laptops ranks alongside Apple’s finest in terms of quality and performance. Right now, the Surface Go, Surface Pro 7, Surface Book 2, and Surface Laptop 3 are on sale at Amazon and Best Buy ahead of Memorial Day by up to $350 off. With varying specs, power, and price, there’s one Surface device that would perfectly suit your budget and needs, so go ahead and peruse.


The Microsoft Surface Go is the smallest and most affordable among the Microsoft Surface brethren. It may be tiny, but it’s definitely a force to be reckoned with. Combining ultra-portability, remarkable sturdiness, and the impressive Type Cover keyboard, it’s the ideal travel buddy if you don’t want to dive into the Surface Pro’s larger screen (and slightly higher price tag). Basically a 10-inch tablet/laptop hybrid, it runs with a full version of Windows 10 and has an Intel Pentium Gold processor in its heart. Since this is a relatively new device, it comes with a single USB-C port, something lacking in the older Surface Pro.


It sports an aluminum unibody that’s reminiscent of the original iPad, with rounded corners but minus the ultra-slim bezels. Despite this outdated design choice, it looks positively regal, especially since its 10-inch display is drop-dead gorgeous. With a resolution of 1,800 x 1,200 pixels, everything looks sharp (although not as sharp as the Surface Pro, of course). The Surface Go’s display is bright, maxing out at 420 nits in our tests. That’s better than most laptops, especially at this price, and it’s important since the Surface Go is likely to be used in brightly lit spaces, or even outdoors.


Although not bundled, you should definitely get the Signature Type Cover. This detachable keyboard doubles as a kickstand and offers a comfortable typing experience, far better than that of the MacBook Pro, which is more expensive. However, the keyboard layout looks a little cramped, a clear compromise of its ultra-portability, so mistyping can happen. But as with most keyboards, you’ll eventually get the hang of it. The touchpad also works smoothly and precisely.



Now a couple of drawbacks: Performance and battery life. The Surface Go’s Pentium 4415Y chip can handle most conventional applications like Microsoft Word or Photoshop Express just fine, but opening multiple browser tabs simultaneously made the device noticeably stutter. It also doesn’t have a lengthy battery life. During our video loop test, it was able to last just eight hours and an even shorter three hours in our more strenuous web browsing test. The Surface Pro 7 and Surface Book 2 fared far better.


While there haven’t been many significant changes in the numerous iterations of the Microsoft Surface Pro line, we still wholeheartedly recommend the Microsoft Surface Pro 7. Of course, you’re better off getting the Surface Pro X with its tangible refinements both in hardware and performance, but it’s one of the most expensive machines in the market. What you get with the Surface Pro 7 is what we’ve already come to expect: A gorgeous display, top-notch build quality, updated processor performance, and outstanding battery life. And finally, we get a USB Type-C port. This means fewer cables since the USB-C port can handle power delivery, video output, and data transfer at the same time.


As always, Microsoft made sure that the Surface Pro 7 looks terrific. Its aluminum chassis is sleek, and stylish, though the bezels still haven’t been cut down. Still, this is one stunning device.You probably already know that the detachable Type Cover keyboard remains a mandatory purchase, and normally it’s sold separately. Because as a tablet alone, the Surface Pro 7 doesn’t make much sense.



We’re happy to report that this deal comes bundled with it. The keyboard remains gratifying to use, with a layout that never looks cramped, a keystroke that’s precise and snappy, and a touchpad that’s simply one of the best we’ve had the pleasure of gliding our fingers on. Another peripheral you might want to save up for is the Surface Pen, the best-in-class stylus with 4,096 levels of sensitivity and even a built-in eraser.

Laptops generally don’t make good devices for playing games on so a student laptop doesn’t bother with a dedicated graphics card. Instead, you want a system that is reasonably speedy with a reliable processor and sufficient storage space for the operating system. A lot of the time, you’ll be uploading files to the cloud anyway for your teachers to check so you don’t have to worry about a massive hard drive to store everything, although it can be helpful for the added flexibility.


Don’t worry so much about the screen size. Less is generally more, saving you money and sometimes providing you with superior screen quality. A 13-inch screen might sound small but you soon get used to it and all laptops tend to have a way of plugging them into a separate screen if you decide you want a monitor further down the line. A smaller screen means less to carry around too when you’re back in class and need to transport your laptop around campus.

When picking out a productivity orientated laptop, consider what operating system you want. Nowadays, you have the choice of Windows, MacOS, or ChromeOS. The majority of people are used to Windows but that doesn’t mean it’s the fastest or the best, but if you’re keen to not have to relearn anything, it might still be the most tempting idea.


Alternatively, MacOS is a very efficient operating system because it’s designed for the hardware it’s tied into. However, Macs cost considerably more than a Windows or ChromeOS-based laptop, although they do tend to last longer. They’re great as stylish systems to show off with but few students can easily afford the high asking price. In terms of value for money, they’re not great.


For a great student laptop deal, most students will be fine with a Chromebook. A lot of the time, you’ll be writing documents in Google Docs and Chromebooks lend themselves perfectly to this method. You won’t be able to play games on them but as a solely work device, they’re inexpensive and easy to use. Simply log into your Google account and you can easily save files to the cloud. There’s the added convenience of not having to worry if you need to switch to a different system either — your files will always be there via your account details. You won’t have to scrimp on style either with the devices often looking super stylish and lightweight. Expect better battery life with most Chromebooks than a Windows-based system too.

Google announced on Thursday that starting in August, it will automatically block annoying resource-heavy ads on Google Chrome that drain your battery life.


The tech giant announced the changes in a blog post, saying that these updates will “limit the resources a display ad can use before the user interacts with the ad.” The automatic blocking will be experimented with over the next few months with a Chrome rollout at the end of August.

Google gave some examples of these types of display ads as those that mine cryptocurrency, are poorly programmed or are unoptimized for network usage.


The new ad blocking will work like this: When an ad reaches its loading limit on a website, the ad’s frame will navigate to an error page, so you won’t even be able to see the ad.

Google set the threshold to automatically block ads that use 4MB of network data or 15 seconds of central processing unit (CPU) usage in any 30-second period, or 60 seconds of total CPU usage.


Google seems to be in an ad-policing mood, since earlier this year, it announced that Chrome would start to block three of the most annoying types of video ads, also beginning in August.

The most intrusive ad types that will be blocked include ones that require you to wait five seconds before skipping them, ads that begin to play midway through a video, and ads that take up more than 20% of screen space.



In February, Google removed 600 apps from the Google Play Store that had too many annoying ads to crack down on its disruptive ad policy.

Apps that were removed reportedly had ads that resulted in poor user experiences or disrupted essential functions of people’s phones. Google said these pop-up ads could lead to people unintentionally clicking on them.

It’s reasonably lightweight too, weighing just over 4lbs, and it offers the latest in USB technology – USB-C – so it’ll charge quicker than most.

The storage space is just right for storing all your essential files while keeping others backed up on the cloud, and the processor is speedy enough that it’ll open apps and software quickly. Das Gerät soll nach Steve Jobs erster Tochter benannt worden sein. Apple selbst sagt, das der Name auf dem Akronym "Local Integrated Software Architecture" beruhe. Tech-Redakteure lobten damals den innovativen Charakter des Lisa. Die Kunden waren dagegen weniger beeindruckt. Der Grund: Der extrem hohe Preis von knapp 10.000 Dollar. Lisa wurde zum Ladenhüter. 1989 vergrub Apple etwa 2.700 Lisas auf einem Acker in Utah – so will es die Legende – um die Geräte von der Steuer abschreiben zu können.


Hätten Sie Lust, regelmäßig knapp sieben Kilogramm mit sich herumzuschleppen? So viel wog der Macintosh Portable, der erste tragbare Mac. Bei der Veröffentlichung 1989 machte das Gerät einen guten Eindruck: Für einen tragbaren Computer bot er eine sehr gute Rechenleistung, ein Trackball diente als Mausersatz sowie eine Akkulaufzeit von bis zu zehn Stunden. Auch Kritiker bewerteten das positiv. Das hohe Gewicht und der Kaufpreis (circa 6.500 Dollar) schreckten aber Kunden ab, so dass der Mac Portable auf dem Markt floppte.


Ein tragbarer Mini-Computer mit Handschriftenerkennung? Erinnert etwas an ein Smartphone. Der Apple Newton MessagePad erschien aber im Jahr 1993 und galt als ambitioniertes Projekt. Der damalige Apple-Chef John Sculley bewarb das Gerät bei der Präsentation in Boston als "Basistechnologie des digitalen Zeitalters". Highlight des Newtons waren der berührungsempfindliche Bildschirm und die lernfähige Handschriftenerkennung. Nutzer konnten mithilfe des mitgelieferten Stifts in Schreibschrift Texte auf dem den Bildschirm verfasse. Das Gerät erkannte dabei die Eingabe.



In den ersten Versionen des Apple Newton funktionierte das schlecht. Ein Ruf, den der erste Apple-Minicomputer nicht mehr loswurde. Und das, obwohl bei späteren Versionen des Geräts die Handschriftenerkennung viel besser funktionierte. Apple verlangte für das Gerät etwa 700 Dollar. Bis 1998 verkaufte der Konzern aber nur knapp 300.000 Geräte. Nach seiner Rückkehr stoppte Steve Jobs daher die Produktion, der Apple Newton wurde eingestellt.


1996 erschien eine neue Konsole, die den Giganten Ninentdo, Sega und Sony Konkurrenz machen sollte: die "Atmark" vom japanischen Spielwarenherrsteller Bandai. Das Gerät war ein Computer von Apple, der Apple Pippin. Apple produzierte das Gerät mit dem Gedanken, es an andere Anbieter lizensieren zu lassen. Es sollte als billiger Computer und gleichzeitig Spielekonsole die Kunden überzeugen. Allerdings erwies sich das Gerät als ziemlicher Flop. Sowohl als Konsole als auch Computer war Pippin zu leistungsschwach. Vielen Käufern war der Preis wohl auch zu hoch: knapp 600 Dollar. Zum Vergleich: Die Playstation kostet knapp 300 Dollar. Bandai verkaufte nur 42.000 Einheiten, ehe es die Produktion beendete, die Playstation verkaufte sich über 100 Millionen Mal.


Nach dem neuesten Windows-Funktionsupdate wird Nutzern die Überprüfung ihrer Datenschutzeinstellungen empfohlen. Denn durch das Update könnten einige Einstellungen automatisch zurückgesetzt worden sein – auch die von Kamera und Mikrofon. Seit Anfang Mai verteilt Microsoft in Wellen ein neues Funktionsupdate für Windows 10. Nach der Installation des Upgrades, das das Betriebssystem auf Version 1803 hebt, sollten Nutzer die Datenschutzeinstellungen genau prüfen. Sie lassen sich mit der Kombination "Windows" und "i"-Taste öffnen.


Dort sind neue Punkte wie etwa ein Aktivitätsverlauf hinzugekommen, berichtet das "c't"-Fachmagazin (Ausgabe 12/18). Das bedeutet, dass Windows sich merkt, welche Anwendungen zuletzt genutzt und welche Dateien bearbeitet wurden, wenn der Verlauf aktiviert ist.

Zudem kann es sein, dass einige, bereits getroffene Datenschutzeinstellungen nach dem Update wieder zurückgesetzt sind. Auf Testrechnern stellten die Experten dieses Verhalten etwa bei den Einstellungen zum Datenschutz für die Kamera oder das Mikrofon fest.

If that classic scene from The Graduate were filmed today, the one-word career advice given to Dustin Hoffman’s character wouldn’t be “plastics,” it would be “batteries.”


What will propel all that growth? Lithium-ion battery price decreases, personal electronics, and electric cars churning through them, and, among other factors, more homeowners and power companies looking to store solar and wind energy.Along with that growth comes a lot of waste. Unfortunately, most batteries wind up in landfills. Recycling rates for lithium-ion cells are horrendous: About 5% for the United States and European Union. Researchers are finding ways to make lithium-ion batteries more recyclable, but even if that happens, we still need to change the habits of people and corporations who don’t recycle batteries at all and dispose of them by tossing them in the trash.



Further, some experts say there’s a limited amount of lithium available, although how limited is up for debate. The mining of it and cobalt (which is commonly used for a lithium-ion battery’s positive electrode) comes at a high environmental and human cost. Plus, cobalt’s price has risen notably in the past several years.

This all begs the question: Are there cheaper, more environmentally friendly batteries out there? Could we be using something better? What does the future hold?


A lot of people are researching the possibilities. Since the 1990s, more than 300,000 battery-related patents have been filed (more than 30,000 in 2017 alone). While a large percentage of these inventions are related to lithium-ion tech, plenty of work is being done on solid-state electrolyte, silicon-based anode, lithium-air, graphene and other options, some of which are eco-friendly, and others that are environmentally no better than lithium-ion but possibly more efficient.


While most of these new battery types probably won’t be marketed as widely as lithium-ion (at least in the next couple of decades), they can serve really big niche markets. Here are some of the popular ones.



Soon after Col. Wilson retired from the military, executives from a solar panel company asked him to dip into his years of energy storage acquisition knowledge (the military is one of the world’s biggest battery users), take a trip to CES in Las Vegas, and survey the current crop of home batteries. After the trip, he created a giant spreadsheet to explain why he was dissatisfied with the options he saw. The best batteries were either overpriced for the average homeowner ($30,000-plus) or didn’t have enough power. Environmentally minded chem-heads will quickly tell you that lithium-iron-phosphate energy storage is just another type of lithium-ion battery, albeit one with some notable advantages: It’s cheaper, has more dense energy, longer life and won’t catch fire if the insides rupture (which can happen with lithium-ion batteries). The downsides? It’s extremely heavy (which is why it’s better if it’s sitting on your back porch and not in your phone), the case still has lithium in it, and the recycling pathway is unclear.

Der Dienst namens "Microsoft Managed Desktop" steht wohl kurz vor der Veröffentlichung. Das Angebot richtet sich in erster Linie an Firmen, die durch das Abo-Modell sämtliche Wartungs- und Supportarbeiten für ihre Geräte an Microsoft auslagern können.


Das Abo-Modell sieht vor, dass Nutzer ihre Windows 10-Geräte nicht kaufen, sondern für einen monatlichen Betrag mieten. Durch die Abo-Gebühr werden auch zusätzliche Services abgedeckt, wie etwa regelmäßige Updates sowie andere Support-Aufgaben. Firmen müssten sich nicht mehr mit IT-Problemen herumschlagen und könnten Kosten sparen. Das Monats-Abo soll pro Nutzer abgerechnet werden.


Microsoft bietet bereits ähnliche Support-Services wie das "Microsoft 365"-Abo oder das Leasing-Angebot "Surface as a Service". Über die Einführung des neuen Abo-Services "Microsoft Managed Desktop" war in den USA bereits spekuliert worden. Das Wirtschaftsmagazin "Forbes" äußerte gar die Befürchtung, Microsoft könnte auch Privatnutzer für monatliche Updates zur Kasse bitten. Das ist bislang aber reine Spekulation.


Dass der Abo-Service "Managed Desktop" demnächst auf den Markt kommt, gilt hingegen als gesichert: Microsoft hatte seine Pläne selbst durch mehrere Stellenausschreibungen verraten, in denen das Konzept erläutert und sogar beim Namen genannt wurde. Microsoft Deutschland wollte die Berichte auf Nachfrage von t-online.de nicht kommentieren.


SSD-Festplatten verleihen Notebooks und PCs einen ordentlichen Geschwindigkeitsschub. Und erschwinglich sind die Speicher auch noch, die ohne rotierende Magnetscheiben auskommen und die Daten auf Chips speichern. Allein die diversen Formate geben Rätsel auf.



Schneller sind sie sowieso. Auch bei der Speicherkapazität kommen SSDs immer weiter in die Nähe herkömmlicher Festplatten. Und die Preise sind inzwischen konkurrenzfähig. Doch welche SSD gilt es zu kaufen, und wie funktioniert der Einbau? Ein Überblick:


Am längsten auf dem Markt ist die Standard-SSD im 2,5-Zoll-Format mit SATA-Schnittstelle. Sie steckt in einem Gehäuse, hat das Format einer klassischen 2,5-Zoll-Festplatte und stellt oft mit die einfachste und günstigste SSD-Erweiterungsmöglichkeit für Desktop-PCs und Notebooks dar. 2,5-Zoll-SSDs mit 500 Gigabyte (GB) sind schon für unter 100 Euro zu haben.


Wer das Speed-Maximum herausholen möchte, sollte sich M.2-SSDs mit NVMe-Schnittstelle anschauen. Diese sind um einiges flotter unterwegs als klassische SATA-SSDs. "Für einen Privatanwender, der nur alltägliche Arbeiten mit dem Rechner macht, reicht eine SATA-SSD vollkommen aus", schränkt aber Manuel Christa vom Fachmagazin "PC Games Hardware" ein. NVMe-SSDs seien besonders geeignet, wenn tagtäglich große Datenmengen bewegt werden müssen.


Kompakter Newcomer

Die gehäuselosen M.2-SSDs erinnern optisch eher an einen Speicherriegel als an eine Festplatte. Sie bestehen nur aus einer kompakten Steckplatine mit Speicherchips und Steuerelektronik – ideal für Notebooks. 2,5-Zoll-SSDs benötigen einen Laufwerksschacht, eine M.2-SSD kann direkt auf die Hauptplatine gesteckt werden. Beim Notebook muss aber ein geeigneter Steckplatz frei und über eine Serviceklappe erreichbar sein.


Die immer 22 Millimeter breiten M.2-SSD-Karten gibt es in verschiedenen Längen. Zwar hat sich mittlerweile die Variante mit 80 Millimetern Länge durchgesetzt. Wer auf Nummer sicher gehen will, dass die neue SSD passt, sollte aber wegen der richtigen Länge ins Handbuch seines Rechners schauen.



Doppeltes Lottchen

M.2-SSDs gibt es aber auch noch mit zwei verschiedenen Schnittstellen. Einmal mit der klassischen SATA- und einmal mit deutlich schnelleren NVMe-Verbindung. Unterscheiden kann man die Schnittstellen schon beim Blick auf die Steckkontaktleiste: M.2-SSDs mit SATA haben zwei Einkerbungen, M.2-SSDs mit NVMe nur eine. Da NVMe auf dem PCIe-Verbindungsstandard basiert, werden NVMe-SSDs oft auch als PCIe-SSDs angeboten.

Ein neuer Supercomputer im Jülicher Forschungszentrum soll bei der Auswertung gigantischer Datenmengen helfen. Die "Juwels" getaufte Anlage wurde am Dienstag offiziell eingeweiht, für erste Projekte war der Rechner schon seit Juni im Betrieb.


Eine Spitzenleistung von bis zu zwölf Petaflops sei möglich, sagte Dorian Krause, der für Aufbau und Betrieb von "Juwels" verantwortlich ist. Das entspricht zwölf Billiarden Rechenoperationen pro Sekunde. "Wenn man das umrechnet, kommt man ungefähr auf die Rechenleistung von 60.000 modernen Computern", sagte Krause.


Bei einer weltweiten Top-500-Liste der schnellsten Computer hatte sich "Juwels" im Juni bereits als schnellster Superrechner aus Deutschland positionieren können. Global belegte er Platz 23. Zur symbolischen Einweihung am Dienstag kamen auch NRW-Ministerpräsident Armin Laschet (CDU) und Bundesforschungsministerin Anja Karliczek (CDU).


"Juwels" ist nach Angaben des Forschungszentrums auf ein breites Aufgabenspektrum ausgelegt. Hirn- und Klimaforschung, Medikamentenentwicklung oder Astronomie seien nur einige der Gebiete, in denen der Rechner nützen könne.

Wenn der Handy-Akku* nicht mehr lädt, Schauen Besitzer vom iPhones, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge und anderen Geräten in die (schwarze) Röhre. Lässt sich euer Smartphone, Handy oder Tablet nicht mehr aufladen, kann das unterschiedliche Ursachen haben. Im besten Fall stimmt etwas mit dem Ladegerät oder -kabel nicht, es kann aber auch ein Problem mit dem Smartphone oder dem Akku selbst vorliegen, das Schwierigkeiten mit dem Ladevorgang verursacht. Wir zeigen euch hier einige Lösungsansätze, wie ihr euer Android-Gerät wieder zum Laufen bringen könnt.


Euer Handy Akku lädt nicht mehr und ihr fragt euch, ob er defekt ist? Ein neues Smartphone muss natürlich nicht direkt her, dennoch ist es ärgerlich, wenn Geräte wie das S7 nicht mehr laden. Aber was tun, wenn das Samsung-Handy nicht mehr lädt und welche Tricks helfen bei anderen Mobilgeräten? Da die Ursachen vielfältig sind, solltet ihr Schritt für Schritt die Möglichkeiten durchgehen, um die passende Lösung für das Problem zu finden.

In modernen Handys sind in der Regel Lithium-Ionen- oder Lithium-Polymer-Akkumulatoren verbaut. Kommt der Strom nicht bei eurem Gerät an, prüft zunächst Folgendes:

Habt ihr lediglich ein Ladegerät zuhause, nehmt ein handelsübliches USB-Kabel mit microUSB-Anschluss und stöpselt dieses an euren PC an. Lässt sich das Handy auf diese Art und Weise aufladen?
Könnt ihr das Ladekabel an einem anderen Gerät (Smartphone, MP3-Player etc.) testen und einen Defekt ausschließen?

Lasst den Akku außerhalb des Smartphones für mindestens 20 Minuten liegen und startet den Ladevorgang anschließend erneut.

Habt ihr eine neue Speicherkarte im Handy oder eine App aus einer nicht ganz so seriösen Quelle installiert? Macht dies rückgängig und prüft, ob sich der Akku wieder laden lässt.
