The Acer Nitro 5 is rather understated for a gaming laptop. It’s not particularly stylish nor does it have the multicolor LEDs of premium gaming laptops. Nevertheless, it comes with stylized cooling vents and a red luminous keyboard so you can still distinguish it from ordinary business laptops. Its keyboard is precise and comfortable to use and features WASD keys that are boldly outlined in red. It features a small number pad, too.


The touchpad is pretty good as well, responsive and precise with support of Windows 10 multitouch gestures. Unfortunately, its build quality isn’t the best. We noticed a fair bit of flexing when we applied pressure on it, and at 1.1-inch thick and about 6 pounds, it’s not exactly travel-friendly. At least it’s got plenty of ports for peripherals, including one USB 3.1 Type-C, two USB 2.0 Type-A, one USB 3.0 Type-A, an SD card slot, HDMI out, and a headphone/mic combo jack.


Acer also outfitted the Nitro 5 with solid specs despite being a budget gaming laptop. Equipped with Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1650 GPU with 8GB of RAM, we enjoyed a steady 44 frames per second on medium graphics settings when playing Far Cry New Dawn, and 43 frames per second in Middle Earth: Shadow of War. While these numbers aren’t exactly mindblowing, they are quite decent for an entry-level gaming laptop.


The Nitro 5 may come at a budget-friendly price but Acer certainly didn’t skimp on its gaming performance. Get it for only $700 at Best Buy today.


For $950 (a whopping $250 less than its normal retail price of $1,200), you’ll get a strong GTX 1660 Ti GPU, lengthy battery life, and a sleek and sexy design with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G GA502. Even though it has a middling AMD processor and a lackluster display, we still recommend the Zephyrus G if you’re after solid gaming experience for relatively less money.



The aluminum chassis of the Zephyrus G has a textured brushed finish that’s quite fetching. The glossy ROG logo is bedecked with red backlighting that faintly lights up. The screen is surrounded by super-slim bezels, and at 4.5 pounds and 14.2 x 9.9 x 0.8 inches, the Zephyrus G is incredibly light and slim. This laptop is outfitted with a decent number of ports, including an RJ45 Ethernet port, an HDMI 2.0 port, three USB 3.1 port, one USB Type-C port (DisplayPort 1.4), and a headphone jack. Although its 15.6-inch display is rather dull and dim compared to your average budget gaming laptop, it packs a 120Hz refresh rate for buttery-smooth gameplay. Its keyboard offers a very comfortable typing experience with the inclusion of palmrests, and the Windows precision drivers-powered touchpad is equally easy to use.


This laptop is armed with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti GPU with 6GB of VRAM. In our test, it was able to blaze through Shadow of the Tomb Raider at its highest graphics setting and at 36 frames per second. We did notice an occasional stutter and glitch, but not enough to ruin the overall experience. Moreover, its AMD Ryzen 7 3750H processor with 16GB of RAM was able to seamlessly juggle multiple Google Chrome tabs open with five 1080p-YouTube videos while Shadow of the Tomb Raider ran in the background, making this a great work laptop as well.


Boasting an awesome streamlined design and above-average GPU performance that’s slightly marred by a subpar display, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G GA502 is a great pick for a budget gaming laptop. Get it for a huge $250 off at Best Buy right now.



Well go straight to the point: The MSI GS65 Stealth is one of the best midrange gaming laptops out there. It practically has no flaws, comes at an attractive price, and boasts the power to play the most graphically demanding games at the highest setting. This exquisite piece of gaming equipment is currently on sale at Best Buy for $1,300 instead of $1,700, and an unprecedented $400 off.


The MSI GS65 Stealth screams luxury. With opulent black and gold accents adorning its svelte and sophisticated chassis, this is the Cadillac of gaming laptops. At a mere 4.1 pounds and 0.7 inches thick, this is one of MSI’s skinniest gaming laptops to date: It won’t weigh you down when you’re traveling with it. Despite its slim profile, it still has plenty of ports to offer. On the right side, you’ll find a USB 3.1 Type-A port, Thunderbolt 3, a Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, and the power jack, while the left side flaunts a pair of USB 3.1 Type-A ports, Gigabit Ethernet, a secure lock slot, a microphone jack and an S/PDIF jack for high-res audio.

Nun, in lauen Sommernächten braucht man beinahe keinen Schlafsack. Wer sich trotzdem einkuscheln möchte, der wählt einen leichten Sommerschlafsack. Hier scheint sich die Welt in Kunstfaser- und Daunenverfechter zu teilen. Wer Gewicht sparen möchte, entscheidet sich für ein Daunenmodell. Diese sind im Schnitt 40 Prozent leichter, müssen dafür aber täglich eine knappe Stunde gelüftet werden.

Falls stattdessen Sturm und Wolken Sie beinahe nach Hause treiben wollen, trotzen echte Outdoor-Fans dem ungemütlichen Wetter mit sturmerprobten Zelten. Heutzutage ist es quasi ein Muss, überall erreichbar zu sein. Sollte Ihre Powerbank den langen Trip nicht aushalten, dann können Sie zu praktischen Solarladestationen greifen. Scheint die Sonne mal nicht, dann versorgt Sie eine tragbare Brennstoffzelle, wie der Hydrogen Reactor von Brunton (um 100 Euro) mit der Energie von 30 AA–Batterien. So klein wie eine Zigarettenschachtel, wiegt das Energiepaket gerade 216 Gramm.

Die Preise von Grafikkarten kennen seit vielen Monaten nur noch eine Richtung: aufwärts. Dadurch werden auch leistungsfähige Heimcomputer teurer. Was steckt dahinter und wann lohnt sich der Kauf trotzdem?

Dass ein leistungsfähiger Desktop-PC nicht gerade günstig ist, überrascht nicht. Doch seit geraumer Zeit hat sich der Neukauf eines Rechners zu einem ganz besonders kostspieligen Unterfangen entwickelt. Der Grund: Die Preise für Grafikkarten befinden sich im Höhenflug und übersteigen bei vielen Modellen den ursprünglichen Kostenpunkt mittlerweile um das Zwei- bis Vierfache.



Martin Fischer vom Fachportal "Heise Online" hat vor allem einen Grund für die Preisspirale identifiziert: Kryptomining, also das Erzeugen von Kryptowährungen wie Ethereum oder Bitcoin, die zeitweise schon wertvoller als Gold waren. "Weil man diese wertvolle Kryptowährung mit eigener Hardware schürfen kann, haben sich viele Menschen dazu entschieden, genau das zu tun", erklärt Fischer.

Alles, was man dazu braucht, sind Grafikkarten.

But the best part? All the components, including the GPU and CPU, can be replaced. In our review, we found that getting access to those parts wasn’t as easy as the marketing may have alluded to. All the same, it’s an insanely powerful laptop that can run nearly everything at high framerates on its 1080p 144Hz screen. Even if you plug it into a 4K monitor, you’ll be impressed by how well games run.


It’s not the gaming laptop you want if you’re taking it on the go, especially given its low battery life and hefty chassis, but if true power is what you want, look no further.


This budget-friendly laptop may not seem like a gaming powerhouse, but as one of the cheapest systems with a dedicated GPU, it can’t be ignored. It’s more modest than the other systems here, coming standard with an Intel Core i5-9300H and 8GB of RAM.


The real star of the show is its graphics card, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti graphics card. During our tests, it nearly kept up with more expensive laptops like the Razer Blade. It doesn’t look quite as sharp, but it has more than enough horsepower to run the latest games at high detail settings.


Our review unit handled games like Battlefield 1, Fortnite, and Civilization VI at around 60 frames per second — and that’s with settings maxed. It has a harder time with gaming in higher resolutions, but there are configuration options for the GTX 1060, which would fare better. A new version is even available, which includes 10th-gen processors and up to the RTX 2060 graphics.


The G3 does look like a budget system, though it’s not as bad as you might expect. It’s a bit heavy, clad in plastic and numerous shades of blue. The screen’s bezels are thick, the touchpad feels cheap, and the display is pretty dull. But if you can look past some of those compromises, you’ll find a very capable gaming laptop that delivers impressive framerates — and for most people, that’s what matters.


The G14 is unlike any gaming laptop you’ve used. It’s incredibly lightweight, at just 3.5 pounds — and uses just a 14-inch screen rather than the typical 15-inch variety. The result is the smallest gaming laptop ever made, especially given how powerful this thing is.


The heart of it is AMD’s Ryzen 4000, eight-core processor. It’s a beast. Multi-threaded performance is off the chart for a laptop this small, making it a capable option for video editors, 3D modelers, and content creators of every kind.



It’s also provides excellent gaming performance, of course. You have options for either a GTX 1650, a GTX 1660 Ti, or an RTX 2060. If you can opt for the 2060, you’ll be able to play most games over 60 frame per second. You’ll have to pay an extra $500 for the fancy programmable LEDs on the lid, but the $1450 RTX 2060 model (without LEDs) is a great value.


G-Sync might kill battery life, but when it comes to smooth gameplay, it’s a must-have for many gamers. The Predator Triton 500 is a fantastic gaming laptop that just happens to include Nvidia’s important display technology.


Starting with a Core i7-9750H and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q GPU and topping out with an RTX 2080 Max-Q upgrade, the Triton 500 can stand toe to toe with many of the other laptops on this list for significantly less cash. Like many gaming laptops right now, the Triton 500 has been announced to include support for 10th-gen Intel processors and RTX Super graphics cards, but those configurations are not yet available. This new version of the Triton 400 will also include a 300Hz screen.


There are some caveats. The Triton 500 doesn’t look like a standard gaming laptop, but it also lacks the eye-catching build of other thin and light gaming laptops like the Razer Blade 15. Like its aesthetics, the Triton 500’s battery performance is also underwhelming. But if you’re looking for the best gaming bang for your buck with a G-Sync screen, it’s hard to do better than this.



Gaming laptops tend to be more expensive than more general-purpose laptops because they generally include a dedicated graphics chip for better game visuals and frame rates. But they needn’t cost the Earth.

Laut Microsoft soll die neue Kommandozeile "neu, modern, schnell, effizient und leistungsfähig" sein. Mithilfe des Terminals können Nutzer dem System verschiedene Befehle geben, die über die Funktionen in den Einstellungen hinausgehen. Beispielsweise lassen sich mit der Kommandozeile schnell Informationen zum Netzwerk abrufen, wie die IP-Adresse.


Eine Besonderheit des "Windows Terminal" ist beispielsweise, dass Nutzer mehrere Registrierkarten in einem Fenster öffnen können, so wie in einem Browser. Auch werden dank einer neuen Engine mehr Schriftarten, Zeichen sowie Emojis unterstützt und der Text schneller gerendert, also dargestellt. Nutzern bietet das "Windows Terminal" die Möglichkeit, das Tool zu individualisieren und verschiedene Profile anzulegen.


"Windows Terminal" ist Open Source, das heißt, der Code kann von allen Nutzern eingesehen werden. Microsoft hat den Quellcode auf der Entwicklerplattform "Github" veröffentlicht. Ab Sommer 2019 sollen Insider auf das neue Terminal zugreifen können. Ab Winter 2019 soll es für alle Nutzer zum Download verfügbar sein.


Was kann ich mit der Kommandozeile machen?

In Kommandozeilen wie cmd oder dem "Windows Terminal" können Sie direkt mit Ihrem System kommunizieren, ihm Befehle geben und Informationen anfordern. Dazu müssen Sie aber Befehle nutzen, die der Computer versteht. Minimale Englischkenntnisse sind hierbei hilfreich.


Um eine Kommandozeile wie Command Prompt (cmd) zu starten, klicken Sie die "Windows"-Taste und tippen Sie "cmd" in die Suchleiste. Um Windows PowerShell zu starten, klicken Sie unter Windows 10 mit rechter Maustaste auf das Windows-Symbol und wählen Sie "Windows PowerShell".


Falls es beim Mai-Update für Windows 10 zu Problemen kommt, kann es an den Einstellungen des Betriebssystems liegen. Für diesen Fall hat Microsoft ein Hilfswerkzeug bereitgestellt.



Auf Windows-10-Rechnern können bestimmte Einstellungen und andere Umstände dazu führen, dass größere Funktionsupdates nicht automatisch installiert werden. Bevor Ende Mai das nächste größere Update (Windows-10-Version 1903) verteilt wird, lohnt es sich deshalb zu prüfen, ob überhaupt schon die letzte große Aktualisierung aus dem Oktober 2018 (Version 1809) eingespielt ist. Hier rät Microsoft Nutzern zu schauen, auf welchem Versionsstand ihr System ist. Dazu gibt man einfach "winver" (ohne Anführungszeichen) in das Eingabefeld neben der Windows-Start-Schaltfläche ein.


Handelt es sich bei der installierten Version noch um 1803, sollten Nutzer den sogenannten Update-Assistenten herunterladen. Das Programm lädt und installiert ausstehende Funktionsaktualisierungen.



Fehlermeldungen bei der Installation ließen sich häufig vermeiden, indem man vorher externe USB-Speicher abzieht oder SD-Speicherkarten entfernt. Virenscanner oder Optimierungsprogramme werden vor dem Update am besten deaktiviert. Und vor einem großen Update schade es nicht, seine Daten auf einem externen Datenträger zu sichern.


Mozilla hat ein Problem mit deaktivierten Firefox-Erweiterungen per Update gelöst. Nutzer, deren Add-ons mit einem Hinweis auf Zertifikatsprobleme auf einmal nicht mehr funktionierten, müssen nichts weiter tun.Nach der Installation des Updates auf Version 66.0.4 sollten die Erweiterungen sowohl auf Rechnern als auch auf Android-Mobilgeräten wieder funktionieren.

Fast-paced shooters like Battlefield V are a great fit for the Zephyrus G14, which comes with a fast 120Hz refresh rate display. And 98 FPS on Medium and 70 at Ultra in Battlefield V are not a bad look. The G14 even makes a tough game like Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey playable, managing 64 FPS at High settings.


It can’t be overstated how big of a deal this is for AMD. The company isn’t often featured in laptops this powerful, nor in one this ambitious.


The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 stands out. The laptop made headlines at CES 2020 with its AniMe Matrix Display design on the cover, where LEDs light the laptop’s display lid with patterns and designs. You can even customize them to display text, animations, or logos of your choice.


It’s a cool feature that’ll cost you an extra $500, and my review unit didn’t include it. But even the standard white version, without the AniMe Matrix Display, is beautiful. The matrix of dots adds a splash of interest, and the white color is still unique in its own right.


That said, the G14’s design doesn’t feel cohesive. The lid is white, the keyboard deck and chassis is gray, and the bezels around the display are black. It feels like parts from a few different laptops stitched together into one device. The all-gray option fares a bit better.


The display is a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution IPS panel. It’s nothing special in terms of brightness of contrast, but doesn’t have any major weaknesses, either. Following the trend we’ve seen lately, it features accurate colors and a decent color gamut, showing 77% of the AdobeRGB color space.


The speakers, though, could use some more gusto. I had high hopes, as the G14 includes a pair of upward-facing tweeters and two woofers at the hinge. They’re loud enough, but a modern iPhone sounds better. Between the speakers and the coil whine, you’ll want to pair the G14 with a decent set of headphones.



The inputs are a mixed bag. Let’s start with the good stuff. The touchpad is excellent, which surprised me. A touchpad in a gaming laptop this good is hard to find, since many manufacturers assume you’ll be using an external mouse. Not here. That’s a good call, since the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is small enough to use as an everyday laptop.


The keyboard is also spacious, offering the typical ROG layout, with keys like volume control inserted above the function row. Larger ROG laptops include extra keys along the right side, but they’ve been left out here. This is smart, as I’d rather have a comfortable layout than a page up and page down key.


While typing isn’t a slog, there’s definitely room for improvement. Key presses have a lot of travel, but the bottoming out action is mushy. It makes for an imprecise typing experience that grows weary over time. The keyboard backlighting is also limited. It’s a single-zone and not customizable, which is rare in a gaming laptop these days. The backlighting that is offered is uneven, lighting some keys better than others.


The power button is located above the standard layout and includes a fingerprint reader built-in. That’s important because, strangely, the Zephyrus G14 doesn’t include a built-in webcam. That means no Windows Hello facial recognition, and no Zoom calls. I get the idea — this isn’t a laptop made for video calls. Still, with its potential crossover appeal as a content creation and business laptop, it’s an odd thing to leave out.



Gaming laptops aren’t known for battery life, even when you aren’t gaming. The Zephyrus G14 doesn’t change that, though it does last longer than other gaming laptops. The G14 managed just under 6 hours under a light web-browsing load. That doesn’t compare well to a modern ultrabook like the XPS 13 or HP Spectre x360, which can last up to 10 hours on the same test.


However, for a gaming laptop, it’s at the top of its class. It’s a half hour more than the Dell G7 Gaming Laptop and the Razer Blade, and hours ahead of laptops that have G-Sync like the Zephyrus M and Alienware M15.

Even though a number of laptops have launched with AMD’s powerful Ryzen 4000 mobile processors, Origin PC is bringing desktop performance to its new EON 15-X gaming laptop and NS-15 mobile workstation by packing AMD’s Ryzen 9 3900 desktop processor inside.

The desktop silicon gives these mobile powerhouses a chip that supports 12 cores and 24 threads, rather than the eight-core design of the mobile CPU variant. Origin PC is also pairing AMD’s processing power with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2070 graphics for gaming and creative workflows on the go.

Despite being available with so much power, Origin PC’s Eon 15-X and NS-15 still manages to remain slim, thanks to its use of Nvidia’s Max-Q design. The laptops measure just 1.2 inches thick in a form that weighs just 5.9 pounds. The new EON 15-X and NS-15 are said to be 20% lighter and thinner than the previous generation models.


“Thanks to the AMD Ryzen processor inside Origin’s PC’s Eon 15-X, this new desktop replacement laptop is perfect for gamers, content creators, and anyone needing a high level of productivity,” said Frank Azor, AMD Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions. “The 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 3900 processor enables revolutionary performance on a laptop.”


And like most modern gaming laptops, these new Origin PC offerings ship with a narrow bezel surrounding the 15.6-inch FHD 1080p display, giving the notebooks an 85% screen-to-body ratio. Additionally, for gamers who need to stay on top of the action, the panel supports a 144Hz refresh rate.

Though the refresh rate here is good for minimizing screen tears during action-packed games, it isn’t as high as the 300Hz panels that we’re seeing from other high-end gaming laptops.


The laptops come with dual NVMe M.2 SSD slots for a maximum storage capacity of 4TB along with 32GB of DDR4 memory, so performance and storage should not be a problem.


Pricing for these new desktop-powered laptops starts at $1,624 for a configuration that includes a six-core Ryzen 5 3600 processor, and upgrades will quickly add to the cost of these devices. On a fully maxed out configuration, the Eon 15-X can run as high as $3,751. Those looking for customization can also choose from a number of paint jobs or custom laser-etched graphics designs from Origin.



Qualcomm, the company that makes a significant number of the tiny chips that give Bluetooth devices their wireless capabilities, has just announced its latest SoCs (system-on-a-chip): The Qualcomm QCC514X and Qualcomm QCC304X. And though you will likely never run across these names or model numbers as you’re shopping for a new set of wireless headphones or true wireless earbuds, they’re about to have a profound impact on what those gadgets can do and how much they’ll cost.


Perhaps the most significant change these new chips will bring is active noise cancellation (ANC). ANC has been a popular feature in wireless headphones and has recently made its way into true wireless earbuds too. Unfortunately, it tends to be found only on the most expensive models like Apple AirPods Pro ($249) and Sony WF-1000XM3 ($199-230).


With Qualcomm’s new chips, ANC is built-in, which means that manufacturers won’t have to go to the trouble (time and money) of integrating their own proprietary ANC technologies to offer this feature. In as little as a year, we could see ANC go from being a premium feature to something that appears on true wireless earbuds at almost every price.



Currently, Bluetooth true wireless earbuds must typically share a single wireless connection back to your phone. One earbud is always the primary and it shares the connection over its own wireless link to the secondary earbud. The problem with this arrangement is that the primary earbud might not always have the strongest connection to your phone, or, you may want to use the secondary bud on its own.

HP has recently taken a stab at the 2-in-1 detachable form factor via the HP Elite x2 1013 G3, a design that has been popularized by the Microsoft Surface line. This device is a tablet first and foremost with a detachable keyboard that connects through magnetic pins. The bulk of the hardware components can be found on the tablet, including speakers, three USB-C ports (one for charging), and the power and volume buttons.



The keyboard contains the trackpad. Flip the tablet and you’ll find a retractable stand that supports it in an upright position without having to connect to the keyboard. Unfortunately, you won’t find an SD card reader, which is a massive letdown. The real star of the Elite x2 is the Active Pen, HP’s stylus which connects via Bluetooth and charges through the USB-C port. It features 4,096 pressure points and is extremely intuitive, excellent for drawing on Photoshop or the Windows Sketchpad app.


The Elite x2’s keyboard is pretty decent. The keys are reasonably spaced and offer a pleasant typing experience thanks to satisfactory travel and feedback. The touchpad is also equally good, nicely precise, and responsive. Now for the downside, and it’s a major one: Despite being quite innovative, the lack of a hinge means that only the kickstand holds the tablet up.

Erfordert ein paar Handgriffe mehr. Beim Desktop-PC wird die Platte mit einem speziellen Einbaurahmen in einem regulären Laufwerkschacht verschraubt. Im nächsten Schritt werden Stromversorgung und SATA-Kabel angeschlossen.


Hier nimmt die SSD den Platz der herkömmlichen 2,5-Zoll-Festplatte ein - wenn es nicht gerade zwei Platten-Schächte gibt, was eher bei größeren Notebooks vorkommt. Oft ist auch hier ein Einbaurahmen nötig: Dieser kann einfach von der entnommenen Festplatte entfernt und um die neue SSD gebaut werden.

Das gelingt mit kostenlosen Tools wie etwa Macrium Reflect Free. Je nach Bauvariante und Rechner wird dazu die neue SSD in ein USB-Gehäuse gesteckt und extern angeschlossen oder direkt auf das Mainboard gesteckt. Die Festplatte zu klonen sei keine Raketenwissenschaft, jedoch "sollte man schon ein bisschen Erfahrung haben und sich Zeit nehmen, sonst droht ein Datenverlust", sagt Sven Schulz von der "Computerbild".



Manche SSD-Hersteller lieferten auch eine Software mit. Nach dem Umzug gilt es nur noch, SSDs, die extern zum Klonen angeschlossen wurden, wie beschrieben einzubauen. "Dann muss nur noch die Boot-Reihenfolge im BIOS richtig eingestellt werden, damit der Rechner hinterher auch von der neuen Platte startet", erklärt Schulz. Um ins BIOS-Menü zu gelangen, drückt man beim Hochfahren des Rechners eine bestimmt Taste - oft F2. Auch hier hilft im Zweifel das Handbuch weiter.

Die neue Chrome-Browser-Version 68 warnt vor Websites ohne aktive SSL-Verschlüsselung. Wenn Nutzer eine Seite aufrufen, die nur ohne eine geschützte Verbindung angesteuert werden kann, wird ihnen diese als unsicher angezeigt.

If you need something a little more powerful than the Lenovo IdeaPad 1, the Dell Inspiron 15.6 may be the ticket. With a stylish black exterior that doesn’t compromise utility for looks, the Inspiron is a balanced laptop that’s suitable for most office tasks. It weighs a bit more than the IdeaPad 1 at around 4.4 pounds, but the difference is honestly negligible. You can comfortably take this laptop wherever you go and look good doing it.


The Dell Inspiron 15.6 has a 15.6-inch touchscreen display with 1,366 x 768 resolution that — although it isn’t a huge step up from the IdeaPad — still does its job decently well. Plus, the touchscreen allows for greater accessibility and can be surprisingly convenient if you don’t have a mouse or can’t be bothered to use a trackpad. Derzeit nutzen im Vergleich zu anderen Browsern nur wenige Edge: Laut der Webseite Statista dominierte Chrome im September 2018 mit knapp 68 Prozent Marktanteil. Microsoft Edge kommt nur auf etwa fünf Prozent. Damit liegt der Browser hinter Firefox (circa elf Prozent) und Safari (circa 5,5 Prozent). Selbst der Internet Explorer besitzt laut Statista mit knapp sechs Prozent mehr Marktanteile als Edge.


Microsoft präsentierte vor Kurzem neue Symbole für sein Office-Paket. So werden die Icons für Word, Excel, PowerPoint und Co. durch ein modernes Design ersetzt.Im Zuge dessen plant Microsoft wohl auch neue Symbole für Windows 10. Das berichtet die Seite "Thurrot.com". In einem Beitrag auf "Medium.com" eines Microsoft-Mangers zu den neuen Icons für Office finden sich ein Video und ein Bild mit einem Windows-10-Desktop. Dort sind neue Symbole für verschieden Apps zu sehen (im Video ab Minute 00:42).


Beispielsweise zeigen sich Apps wie Kalender, Explorer, E-Mail und Taschenrechner in einem neuen Design. Sie ähneln vom Stil den neuen Office-Symbolen. Die Windows-Icons im Foto zeigen aber vermutlich Entwürfe oder Beispielbilder und nicht das finale Design.


Eine Antwort von Microsoft-Manager Jon Friedmann im Kommentarbereich zum Artikel nährt ebenfalls die Gerüchte. Er sagt auf Anfrage eines Nutzers zum neuen Design: "Jetzt, wo wir das System (mit den neuen Icons, d. Red.) etabliert haben, beginnen wir, es auf ganz Microsoft anzupassen."



Verschiedene Medien vermuten, dass die neuen Symbole bereits im kommenden April-Update für Windows 10 zu sehen sein werden. Microsoft aktualisierte die Symbole für Office zuletzt 2013. Auch in der Systemsteuerung von Windows 10 finden sich Icons aus älteren Windows-Versionen.

Teilweise gab es bereits private Bemühungen, neue Symbole für veraltete Icons in verschiedenen Bereichen zu finden. Beispielsweise startete die "Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart" 2014 einen Wettbewerb, in dem Teilnehmer ein Ersatzsymbol für "Speichern unter" erstellen konnten. Das zeigt bei manchen Programmen nämlich noch eine Diskette.


Nach langem Hin und Her hat Microsoft das Oktober-2018-Update für Windows Anfang November wieder veröffentlicht. Probleme mit der Version hatten den Konzern gezwungen, die neue Version im Oktober zurückzuziehen.


Im Action Center finden sich aktuelle Benachrichtigungen zum Betriebssystem. Außerdem können Nutzer mit einem Klick bestimmte Einstellungen aktivieren, wie beispielsweise den Flugzeug- oder Stromspar-Modus. Um das Action Center zu öffnen, drücken Sie "Windows-Taste" und "A".


Die Bildschirmhelligkeit lässt sich ebenfalls im Action Center ändern. Bisher allerdings nur in 25-Prozent-Schritten. In der neuen Windows-Version präsentiert Microsoft stattdessen einen Schieberegler. Außerdem lassen sich die Einstellungen zum Action Center auch direkt im Menü anpassen. Bisher mussten Nutzer dafür die Windows-Einstellungen öffnen.


Im letzten Windows-Update erlaubte Microsoft den Dark Mode auch für den Explorer. Nun soll ein Light Theme, ein heller Modus, folgen. Das berichten verschiedene Medien, darunter "Chip.de". In dem Modus werden unter anderem Farben für das Action Center, das Startmenü und die Taskleiste heller dargestellt.

Garmin is stepping up its smartwatch game with the power of the sun. The company announced the new Garmin Quatix 6X Solar, which expands on the original Quatix 6X by adding a solar charging display that helps extend the battery life. As a result, while the original Quatix 6X offers a 14-day battery life, the Quatix 6X Solar extends battery life to an impressive 24 days.



The solar charging tech is a smart addition. It’s transparent and lives in the display, meaning that you won’t actually see a solar panel — as you might have on old solar-powered calculators. Users will be able to see how much energy they’re getting from the sun, as well. The watch features a time indicator to show how much sun the watch has been exposed to.

Allerdings macht die neue Version erneut Schwierigkeiten: beispielsweise auf Rechnern mit Apples iCloud oder mit bestimmten Treibern von Intel-Chips. Darum beschränkte Microsoft die Verteilung bis vor kurzem auf wenige Nutzer. Viele der Probleme sollen jetzt aber laut dem Hersteller behoben sein.


Wer sich ein Notebook kauft, ohne vorher über den überwiegenden Einsatzzweck nachzudenken, läuft Gefahr, ein für seine Arbeitsweise falsches Gerät zu erwischen. Stiftung Warentest erklärt, worauf Käufer achten sollten.


Wird das Notebook fast ausschließlich daheim genutzt, ist man mit einem 15- oder 17-Zoll-Laptop am besten bedient – wer sein Notebook dagegen vor allem unterwegs nutzt, sollte darauf achten, dass das Gewicht 1,5 Kilogramm und die Bildschirmdiagonale 14 Zoll nicht übersteigt, rät die Stiftung Warentest, die für ihre Zeitschrift "test" jetzt 23 mobile Rechner aller Kategorien getestet hat (Ausgabe 1/2019).


Ausgestattet sein sollten große Laptops für daheim mit mindestens acht Gigabyte (GB) Arbeitsspeicher (RAM), möglichst 1.000 GB Massenspeicher und einer Grafikkarte mit mindestens zwei GB Speicher, wenn man viel spielt, oft Fotos bearbeitet oder Videos schneidet. Für unterwegs sollte der Massenspeicher mindestens 256 GB groß und idealerweise als SSD angelegt sein. Als Untergrenze für die Akkulaufzeit geben die Experten 7,5 Stunden beim Abspielen von Videos an. Ob es für unterwegs ein klassisches Ultrabook, ein Convertible mit um 360 Grad drehbarem Touchscreen-Display oder ein Tablet mit abnehmbarer Tastatur (Detachable) sein soll, bleibt Geschmackssache.



In Sachen Prozessor raten die Warentester – unabhängig von der Geräteart – möglichst zu Intels Core-i5- oder Core-i7-CPUs. Bei den Schnittstellen sollten Käufer besonders auf USB-C-, USB-3.0- und HDMI-Anschlüsse achten. Und das Display sollte idealerweise mit Full HD (1920 mal 1080 Pixel) oder mehr auflösen.Wenn der Festplattenspeicher zu Neige geht, heißt es: Daten löschen. Dieser Vorgang kann aber für einige Nutzer aufwendig sein. Windows bietet verschiedene Funktionen, die Nutzer die Festplattenreinigung erleichtern.


Mithilfe der Speicheroptimierung können Nutzer beispielsweise einrichten, welche Daten das System regelmäßig automatisch löschen soll. Denn seit dem Oktober-Update können Nutzer mit der Datenträgerbereinigung auch den Download-Ordner von Windows leeren. Hier speichern Browser normalerweise Dateien, die Anwender herunterladen. Doch Vorsicht: Laut der Beschreibung in der Datenträgerbereinigung werden "Dateien im Ordner 'Downloads'" gelöscht. Allerdings löscht Windows auch Ordner, die sich in "Downloads" befinden.



Nutzer sollten bei einer Datenträgerbereinigung also aufpassen, dass sie nicht versehentlich wichtige Dateien im Ordner "Downloads" löschen, beispielsweise heruntergeladene Bilder oder Dokumente.
Microsoft stellt offenbar die Weichen für eine Bezahlversion von Windows 10. Für Unternehmen gibt es ein solches Abo-Modell bereits. Demnächst könnten auch Privatnutzer zur Kasse gebeten werden – mit einer Ausnahme.


"Microsoft 365 für Verbraucher" – so lautet der Name des Projekts, für das der Software-Konzern gerade nach Personal sucht. Das berichtet ZDNet. Windows-Experten vermuten, dass es dabei um Pläne für eine Abo-Version von Windows 10 geht. Für Firmenkunden gibt es so etwas schon. Microsoft bietet Unternehmen Dienste wie Windows 10, das Office-Paket (Office 365) und den Cloud-Service "Azure" im Abonnement an.


Für Microsoft ist die Entwicklung eines ähnlichen Modells für Verbraucher der nächste logische Schritt, um mit Windows 10 Geld zu verdienen. Um bei diesem Schritt nicht allzu viele Nutzer zu verlieren, könnte Microsoft aber auch zusätzlich eine werbefinanzierte Gratis-Version anbieten. Damit dürfe aber auch eine verstärkte Überwachung des Nutzers einher gehen. Schließlich lassen sich aus seinem Verhalten am Computer einige Schlüsse auf seine Interessen, Vorlieben und Eigenschaften ziehen, um ihm dann passenden Angebote zu zeigen.

That’s a nice break, but keep an eye on this one because HP has been aggressive in pricing this version. That’s probably for a good reason: HP has recently released a new version of the Spectre x360 13 that fixes its one issue — larger bezels — while upgrading to Intel’s 10th-generation CPUs and adding a 4K OLED display option.


Deals on Apple products are hard to find, and so sometimes you need to grab them when you can. The MacBook Air, which was modernized and redesigned in 2018, is the best entry-level MacBook you can buy — perfect for a college student or businessperson. However, the previous model was a great laptop as well, and it’s currently on sale for a very attractive price.



Right now, you can score a great deal on the Core i5 model, at $200 off. This configuration comes with an Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, and a 128GB SSD. It also comes with a lovely display with a 1,440 x 900 resolution, plenty of performance for productivity work. What’s not to like? Act fast, though, because this deal won’t last forever.


One of the best laptops on the market today — and in fact, for several years running — is Dell’s diminutive XPS 13. The latest version has the same tiny bezels as always but puts the webcam above the display where it belongs, removing one of the only complaints we had about the machine. It’s incredibly well-built, looks great, and performs well. It even has a hinge that is designed to open easily while also providing just the right amount of rigidity to keep it in place.


There’s a new XPS 13 version that was recently announced that makes some significant changes to the laptop, including switching the display to the productivity-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio and utilizing faster RAM. However, the 7390 model with Intel’s 10th-gen Comet Lake CPUs has been reduced to $850 for a configuration with a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 13.3-inch Full HD touchscreen, and a 256GB SSD, falling well within our $1,000 budget limit.

The arrival of USB-C has been a game-changer for many electronics. You can use the connection to charge devices and transfer media, and it’s conveniently reversible. Modern laptops no longer need a big power brick — you can just use USB-C.

But there are some precautions you should take when charging over USB-C. Here’s everything you need to know.


You have probably already used USB connections to charge smaller devices either from your computer or from an outlet. That works well because past USB connections had enough wattage to successfully power up those smaller batteries. However, prior versions of USB could handle a limited amount of power, which is why laptop chargers have typically retained their larger, bulkier cables.


USB-C changed that. This type of connection now provides enough power to juice up most laptops (particularly the Type-C 3.0 version). That’s why laptop charging is a new topic of conversation for USB connections, especially now that more laptops are entering the market with USB-C charging compatibility. Eventually, you can expect the majority of laptop chargers to use the USB-C option, though some, like Microsoft, are still taking their time.


So, how do you know if your current laptop has a USB-C port that also works with charging? You could always look it up, but the easiest way is to simply examine your charger. You can identify a Type-C charger by its unique features. USB-C’s connector is small and rounded, significantly different from the old USB version. It also works no matter which way you connect it to the right port, so there’s no need to flip it the right way around. If your charger uses this connection and plugs into your USB-C port, you have a winner!


USB-C chargers are turning up on many different devices, so it’s not strictly relegated to laptops. Newer phones use USB-C charging, car chargers may come with USB-C ports, and portable charges (discussed more below) can have USB-C options. But laptops tend to have USB-C more frequently than other devices, at least for now.


USB-C is a universal charging standard. That means that, technically, it doesn’t matter what USB-C charger you use, it should be able to power up a laptop with a USB-C charging port and power bank. In the real world, this is taking a while to come true. Today the majority of laptop USB-C chargers are interchangeable, but it’s not guaranteed.



Some laptops come with USB-C ports that don’t charge. This is most common on laptops that come with their own, proprietary charger — although a number of laptops can be charged either way, only the propriety charger tends to power up a laptop more quickly. The Samsung Notebook 9 is an example of that, as is the 2019 HP Envy 13. If you’re not sure exactly how to charge your laptop, check the manufacturer’s website, or look up a review of the system here at Digital Trends.


Laptops that rely entirely on USB-C, meanwhile, might not charge with just any charger. PCWorld, in its testing, found that HP’s Spectre x2 wouldn’t charge with any USB-C charger besides its own. HP said that that was intentional because a bad charger could damage the device, or cause it to malfunction. Other devices, like the Apple MacBook Pro, don’t have such tight restrictions — a new USB-C authentication system could help with this issue in the near future.


While we haven’t personally heard of any damage from using a USB-C charger other than the one that came with your laptop, there’s always a slim risk when plugging a laptop into an unknown power source. Faulty cables can also be a problem. Microsoft acknowledges this by saying that you can charge a Surface with a USB-C port, but it’s highly recommended that you use the Surface charger that came with the laptop because a USB-C charger would end up being very slow due to how power is metered within the device. In short, it’s a good idea to buy cables and chargers from reputable sources and think twice about using that cable you found laying on the ground in a conference room.


You will also want to watch your USB-C power mode, which you can find in your laptop settings, usually in the power/battery section. Here, you may find that you can switch Type-C’s output, choosing whether to receive power or send power. If your USB-C laptop charger isn’t working when by all rights it should be, check your settings to make sure it is set to receive power.



Because USB-C is universal and can do multiple things at once, this allows for some unique charging circumstances. Two worth noting are:

Charge-through: Let’s say you have a portable screen for presentations, and a laptop, both with USB-C connections that include the ability to send or receive power. Sure, you could just use that connection to send your presentation to the screen. But with the right setup, you can also use that connection to charge your laptop battery. The screen gets its power from a traditional outlet and then sends a charge out to your laptop. That means your laptop would never run out of juice in the middle of a presentation.

A flow battery is structured differently than most other ones: Instead of packing a bunch of reactive materials together in one unit (like normal batteries do), flow batteries store reactive liquids in separate containers and then pump them into the system to create energy. They’re also huge and designed for grid energy storage — not for electronics and things that can fit comfortably in the palm of your hand.

The original flow battery reportedly weighed 1,000 pounds and was invented in the late 19th century to power the cleverly named French airship “La France.” Interest in the modular energy storage has waxed and waned since then.


“I think what’s really driving an explosion and interest in flow batteries is not so much about making the next generation of batteries for phones or computers, but medium-to-large scale energy storage,” explains Timothy Cook, a professor of chemistry at the University of Buffalo. So, unless you’re building a steampunk cell phone, it’s unlikely you’re going to be carrying around any flow batteries activated with microscopic pumps. However, as more homes install solar power, the market for “personalized energy” storage will grow.


While making lithium-ion batteries more powerful means increasing the size of the battery, the design of the flow batteries makes it possible to increase energy by increasing the size of the liquid reservoirs. San Diego Power and Electric recently installed one that can power 1,000 homes.

“You don’t have to change any of the dimensions of the membrane [where the chemical reaction occurs], you just have to flow the larger volume of liquid through it for a longer time and you can extract that energy out,” explains Cook. “So it’s much much much easier to scale up or scale down or you can basically customize it to the installation.”



Flow batteries also have many more charging cycles than most batteries. The ability to replace the liquids or replace other modular parts means that the potential life of a battery is almost indefinite.

Even though companies currently sell industrial-size flow batteries, professor Cook doesn’t expect widespread acceptance for another five to 10 years. He even imagines a day when electric cars might use the tech. Cook describes a car pulling up to a “gas station,” discharging the spent electrolyte, and then refilling with a freshly charged one. Instead of waiting a half-hour for your car to reboot, the wheels can be spinning again in a matter of minutes. But, of course, that future is way down the road.


Making a battery out of paper has many advantages: It’s thin, flexible, and, if fabricated with the right materials, biodegradable. A team at Stanford University developed early paper batteries by coating thin sheets with a carbon and silver saturated ink. More recently, eco-heads have grown excited about the batteries being developed at Binghamton University. Professor Seokheun “Sean” Choi has made a few different incarnations of it, including one powered by spit — or more scientifically, human saliva — and another powered by bacteria. A recent incarnation of the biobattery developed by Choi and Professor Omowunmi Sadik uses poly (amic) acid and poly (pyromellitic dianhydride-p-phenylenediamine) to make the energy sources biodegradable.



“Our hybrid paper battery exhibited a much higher power-to-cost ratio than all previously reported paper-based microbial batteries,” Choi said when the innovation was announced. Although the commercial use of these eco-friendly paper batteries has been limited given their low electric output (one can power an LED light for about 20 minutes), researchers hope to see them used in electronics, wireless devices, medical applications like pacemakers, aircraft, and automobiles. Choi has written a paper about utilizing them as single-use power sources for point-of-care diagnostic tools in developing countries where batteries may not be readily available.

Microsoft ändert seine Update-Politik für Windows 10. Dank schlanker Express Updates sollen Nutzer spätestens ab 2019 weniger Zeit mit Download und Installation der Dateien verbringen müssen.


Regelmäßige Windows-Updates sind zwar wichtig, um den PC vor Viren, Hackerangriffen und technischen Problemen zu schützen. Gleichzeitig sind sie ziemlich unbeliebt. Denn während des Prozesses bleibt dem Nutzer nichts anderes übrig, als zu warten, bis die Datenpakete heruntergeladen und installiert sind.


Jetzt hat Microsoft reagiert und in einem Blog-Beitrag schlankere und schnellere Updates für Windows 10 angekündigt. Diese sogenannten "Express-Updates" müssen aber deutlich häufiger ausgeführt werden. Die Änderungen zielen vor allem auf Unternehmen und Systemadministratoren ab, die mehrere Geräte verwalten müssen.


Wie funktionieren Updates unter Windows 10?

Bisher werden alle Windows-Updates kumulativ ausgeführt. Die Idee hinter diesen Sammel-Updates: Wer seinen Computer aktualisiert, bekommt automatisch auch alle vorherigen Updates mitgeliefert, die er womöglich verpasst hat. Dabei kommt allerdings mit der Zeit ein ganzer Batzen zusammen.


Das erste kumulative Update nach der Veröffentlichung eines größeren Funktions-Update, wie es das zuletzt Ende April gegeben hat, ist etwa 100 bis 200 Megabyte groß, rechnet Microsoft vor. Weil die Dateien aber mit jeder weiteren Aktualisierung um weitere Komponenten und Funktionen anwachsen, sind nach sechs bis acht Monaten häufig schon Dateigrößen von 1 oder 1,2 Gigabyte erreicht. Wenn sich die Download-Dateien auch noch durch eine langsame Leitung quetschen müssen, braucht man Geduld.



Jetzt nimmt Microsoft Änderungen an dem bisherigen Update-Modell vor. So sollen datenintensiven Delta-Updates ab dem 12. Februar 2019 von schnelleren Express-Updates abgelöst werden. Zur Erklärung: Microsoft unterscheidet zwischen drei verschiedenen Update-Typen:


Vollständige Updates umfassen alle Komponenten und Dateien, die sich seit dem Release der aktuellen Windows 10-Version verändert haben. Solche Updates können, wie oben beschrieben, schnell auf über 1 Gigabyte anwachsen.

Delta-Updates enthalten nur die Komponenten, die seit dem letzten Update aktualisiert wurden. Jedes Delta-Update baut auf das vorherige auf. Man muss also alle nacheinander installieren und kann keines überspringen. Die Dateigröße beträgt zwischen 300 und 500 Megabyte.

Express Updates installieren nur die neuesten Änderungen. Statt also wie beim Delta-Update die gesamte Windows-Komponente zu aktualisieren, werden nur einzelne Dateien ausgetauscht und auf den neuesten Stand gebracht. Der Download- und Installationsprozess dürfte deutlich schneller gehen, da er nur 150 bis 200 Megabyte misst.

Diese Express Updates gibt es schon seit 2017. Sie sollen aber bis 2019 zum neuen Standard werden. Dabei gilt dann: Je häufiger der Nutzer sein System aktualisiert, desto geringer ist die Größe der Download-Datei. Wer es hingegen versäumt, sein System regelmäßig auf Updates zu überprüfen, sitzt am Ende doch wieder länger vor dem PC und schaut beim Installieren zu.


Wer einen neuen Rechner kauft, findet darauf in der Regel ein vorinstalliertes Windows 10. Das jüngste Microsoft-Betriebssystem will auch Einsteigern die Nutzung einfach machen. Noch leichter fällt die Umstellung mit einigen Tipps und Tricks – und auch der Datenschutz lässt sich verbessern. Hier finden Sie eine Auswahl an praktischen Handreichungen.



1. Datenschutz

"Windows 10 sammelt von Haus aus sehr viele Daten", sagt Hauke Mormann von der Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfahlen. "Als Anwender sollte man sich daher mit den Datenschutzeinstellungen in Ruhe auseinandersetzen." Diese ändert man so: Drücken Sie gleichzeitige die "Windows-Taste" und "I", um die Einstellungen zu öffnen. Nun geht es mit einem Klick auf Datenschutz weiter. Auf der linken Seite befinden sich Namen der jeweiligen Apps und deren Funktionen. Wenn man beispielsweise die Messaging-Apps nicht nutzt, sollte man hier den blauen Schieberegler auf "Aus" stellen.

In either case, you’ll also enjoy a 1080p display and excellent connectivity with two USB-A 3.0 ports, a USB-A 2.0 port, a USB-C 3.1 port, an Ethernet port for wired networking, and a full-size HDMI video connection. In a day and age where companies are sidelining compatibility concerns, that’s nothing to sneeze at. But perhaps most impressive is the Aspire 5 generous battery capacity. In our testing, the Aspire 5 exceeded Acer’s 7-hour estimate when browsing the web, at just over nine hours. You’ll be free to roam campus all day without lugging around a power brick or having to dash back to your dorm for extra charging.



If you can scrounge up some extra cash, then you could look at some of the prettier machines on our list. However, if you’d rather save your money for some better dorm room furniture or textbooks, then the Acer Aspire E 15 can meet your basic requirements with some room to spare.


You’ll spend hours and hours in class, studying, and taking tests, and there’s nothing like a quick gaming session to get your mind off your work. If you want a laptop that can keep up, then the Dell G3 Gaming offers several key benefits.


First, it’s reasonably priced at around $800 for a configuration with an 8th-gen 45-watt quad-core Core it-8300H CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. Most important, that nets you an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, a quick mobile GPU that can game at 1080p with decent graphics in most modern titles.

Second, the Dell G3 Gaming is also relatively thin and light for a gaming laptop. That means you can carry it around campus as well. Like all gaming laptops, it won’t provide you with record-breaking battery life, but it’s decent enough to get you to a class or two and back to the dorm.


We spend a tremendous amount of time reviewing notebooks of all shapes and sizes — and that’s saying something today, when laptops come in so many shapes, sizes, and configurations. But we do have a method to our madness in conducting these reviews, and you can get a behind-the-scenes look at it here. Hopefully, it will be obvious that our reviews are real labors of love — or hate, depending on the notebook — and therefore you can at least recognize that we don’t arrive at our conclusions without some serious consideration.


There was once a time when our answer would be a strong “no,” primarily because gaming laptops were once usually much larger, thicker, and heavier than non-gaming machines. That’s the last thing you want to carry around from class to class. That’s no longer true today, when many gaming laptops are thinner and lighter than ever. In addition to our Dell G3 Gaming pick above, the Razer Blade is perhaps the classic example of a laptop that’s made for gamers, with fast CPU and GPU options, but isn’t much thicker or heavier than other laptops.


At the same time, gaming laptops tend to focus more on performance than battery life, and you’ll pay a premium to carry around those gaming components in a thin and light chassis. The great thing is that many laptops today have Thunderbolt 3 ports that can connect to external GPU enclosures for some extra gaming oomph. If you choose a laptop with at least a quad-core 8th-gen Intel CPU and at least 8GB of RAM, then you can attach it to an external GPU and get performance that’s pretty darn close to a dedicated gaming laptop. And your choice of a laptop will be much wider, including choosing among the horde of excellent 2-in-1s that have hit the market over the last several years.

Wie viel Speicher im eigenen Rechner steckt, lässt sich ganz leicht herausfinden: Unter Windows 7 führt der Weg ins Startmenü, dort werden einem nach einem Rechtsklick auf "Computer" und "Eigenschaften" die Systeminformationen angezeigt. Unter Windows 10 findet sich die Übersicht in der Systemsteuerung unter "System" und "Info".


Besser noch funktionieren Programme wie CPU-Z. Die kostenlose Software gibt nicht nur eine umfangreiche Übersicht zu installierter Hardware. Sie listet auch exakte Daten zum verwendeten Speicher auf. Das ist wichtig, damit identische Speicherriegel nachgekauft werden können. Welche Speicherbausteine ein Mainboard unterstützt, lässt sich auch im Handbuch nachlesen.


Meist ist die Geschwindigkeit höher, wenn statt einem großen zwei kleinere Speicherriegel verbaut werden – also zum Beispiel zweimal 16 GB statt einmal 32 GB. Die Experten empfehlen hier auch, auf den richtigen Einbau zu achten. Meist sind die für den paarweisen Einbau vorgesehenen Speichersteckplätze farbig markiert.


Falls nicht, sollten zwei zusammengehörige Module in den ersten und dritten Steckplatz – vom Prozessor aus gesehen – eingesteckt werden. Werden dann später noch weitere Speichermodule gekauft, können sie in Steckplatz 2 und 4 eingebaut werden.


2020 endet der Update-Support für Windows 7. Wer weiterhin sein System aktuell halten möchte, muss laut Microsoft für Sicherheits-Updates zahlen. Doch dieser Service ist nur für bestimmte Nutzer gedacht.


Wer sein Windows-7-System in Zukunft aktuell halten will, muss ein kostenpflichtiges Abo-Modell abschließen. Das schreibt der Microsoft-Vizepräsident für Office- und Windows-Marketing Jared Spataro in einem Blog-Artikel auf der Microsoft-Seite.



Laut dem Artikel beendet Microsoft den Service für Windows 7 am 14. Januar 2020. Danach bietet der Konzern bis Januar 2023 "Extended Security Updates" (ESU), also erweiterte Sicherheitsupdates. Diese werden für "alle Volumenlizenz-Kunden von Windows 7 Professional und Windows 7 Enterprise verfügbar sein", schreibt Spataro. Im Klartext: Die Regelung betrifft nur Firmenkunden, die Windows 7 nutzen. Privatnutzer werden keine Updates erhalten. Diese können für ein aktuelles System unter anderem auf Windows 10 wechseln.

Am 21. Mai veröffentlichte Microsoft das Mai-Update für Windows 10 für alle Nutzer. Die neue Version bietet unter anderem ein neues Design und mehr Kontrolle über Updates. Die wichtigsten Änderungen haben wir in diesem Artikel zusammengefasst.

Die Prozessorgeneration ist eines der zentralen Unterscheidungsmerkmale, die auch den Preis des Rechners bestimmen. Fast alle Notebook-Prozessoren stammen von Intel und AMD. Bei Intel rät van de Sand durchschnittlichen Privatanwendern zum Modell i5. Der i3-Prozessor sei die absolute Basisvariante, i7 für den privaten Gebrauch dagegen schon "sehr anspruchsvoll".Auch bei AMD, das seine seit 2017 verfügbaren Ryzen-Prozessoren ebenfalls mit ungeraden Zahlen von 3 bis 7 nummeriert, sei man "mit der 5 gut dabei", ergänzt Sebastian Klöß.


Besser mehr Speicher und kleineren Display

Beim Arbeitsspeicher (RAM) raten die Experten mindestens zu vier, besser zu acht Gigabyte (GB). Einigkeit auch beim Massenspeicher: SSD statt herkömmlicher Festplatte, so die Empfehlung. Eine SSD sei heute Standard, sie "ist robust und greift schneller auf die Daten zu, ist aber auch teurer als eine klassische Festplatte", sagt van de Sand. Außerdem verbrauche sie weniger Strom und erhöhe damit die Laufzeit des Notebooks, ergänzt Klöß. Beim Speicherplatz gilt: 128 GB seien das Minimum, 256 GB eindeutig besser.


Die Größe des Displays beeinflusst Preis, Maße, Gewicht und Stromverbrauch. 15,6 Zoll oder mehr sind für längeres Arbeiten angenehmer als kleinere Bildschirmdiagonalen. Berufspendlern, die täglich zwei Stunden im Zug arbeiten, würde van de Sand aber eher zum Ultrabook mit 13-Zoll-Display raten. Das wiege statt zwei und mehr eher um ein Kilo – "das merkt man, wenn man es täglich trägt".


Klappbarer Laptop für unterwegs

Wer im Zug gerne Filme schaue, könne auch über den Kauf eines Convertibles nachdenken, bei dem sich die Tastatur ganz nach hinten klappen lässt. "Das ist auch praktisch für Präsentationen vor drei oder vier Personen", sagt van de Sand.



Beim Detachable lässt sich der Bildschirm ganz abnehmen und wie ein Tablet benutzen, meist mit entsprechend anderer Nutzeroberfläche. Doch allen, die überwiegend im Tablet-Modus arbeiten, rät van de Sand eher zum Kauf eines Tablets mit externer Tastatur.

Bei der Auflösung ist Full HD (1.920 mal 1.080 Pixel) ausreichend, das Display sollte eher matt sein, findet Klöß. "Beim glänzenden sind Farben und Kontraste knackiger, aber in hellerer Umgebung spiegeln sie zu sehr."


Viele Standardfunktionen lassen sich bequem über Tastenkombinationen in Windows erreichen. Wir zeigen, wie Sie eigene Shortcuts vergeben können und was es zu beachten gilt. Unter Windows starten Sie Ihre Lieblings-Programme auch ohne spezielles Multimedia-Keyboard einfach per Taste. Sie müssen dafür nur eine Tastenkombination einrichten. Dabei können Sie Buchstaben in Kombination mit "Strg" oder "Alt" benutzen; auch einzelne Funktionstasten sind möglich, wobei von den Funktionstasten F1 bis F12 nur noch wenige frei sind.


Programm-Tastenkürzel in Windows anlegen. So geht's:

Klicken Sie im Start-Menü oder auf dem Desktop mit der rechten Maustaste auf ein Programmsymbol (beziehungsweise auf eine Verknüpfung eines Ordners) und wählen aus dem Kontextmenü den Eintrag Eigenschaften aus.
Klicken Sie jetzt mit dem Mauszeiger unter dem Reiter "Verknüpfung" in die Eingabezeile neben Tastenkombination. Hier wird standardmäßig der Text "Keine" angezeigt.



Jetzt brauchen Sie nur noch die gewünschte Taste auf der Tastatur zu drücken. Windows trägt anschließend die Bezeichnung automatisch ein. Mit einem Druck auf die Korrekturtaste löschen Sie Ihre Eingabe wieder. Die Einstellungen werden mit einem Klick auf "OK" gespeichert.
