Das Belegen einer Taste zu einem Programm oder einem Windows-Ordner funktioniert nur dann, wenn im Start-Menü oder in der Verknüpfung der Pfad zu dem gewünschten Programm korrekt ist. Die Funktionstaste F1 öffnet unter Windows beispielsweise die Hilfefunktion. Die Taste F5 aktualisiert standardmäßig die Desktop-Ansicht. Die Standard-Tastenkombinationen können jedoch auch überschrieben werden.Eine zwei Jahre alte Sicherheitslücke in der Office-Software von Microsoft macht mal wieder Ärger. Der Konzern erinnert Nutzer daran, die Software zu aktualisieren.


Wie heise.de berichtet, nutzen Angreifer derzeit eine Sicherheitslücke in Microsoft Office, die bereits seit zwei Jahren bekannt ist und mit einem Update behoben werden kann. Durch die Schwachstelle können Rechner schon durch das Öffnen eines Dokuments mit einem Trojaner infiziert werden. Davon bedroht sind Nutzer, die eine veraltete Office-Version nutzen.


Die Schadsoftware wird laut Microsoft durch manipulierte RTF-Dokumente verbreitet. Dabei scheint es sich um eine gezielte Kampagne zu handeln. Die Angreifer haben es vor allem auf Ziele in Europa abgesehen. Nutzer sollten hier verstärkt auf Phishing-Mails mit verdächtigen Anhängen achten. Der Trojaner wird installiert, sobald das Dokument geöffnet wird. Dadurch wird den Angreifern eine "Hintertür" im System geöffnet, durch die weitere Schadprogramme nachgeladen werden kann.



Für das Problem gibt es bereits seit 2017 einen Sicherheitspatch. Doch noch immer gelinge es Angreifern, die Schwachstelle auszunutzen, warnt Microsoft auf Twitter. "Wir empfehlen dringend, die Sicherheitsupdates auszuführen", schreibt der Software-Konzern.


Windows-Rechner verlieren über die Jahre schnell an Leistung. Doch alte Geräte müssen nicht gleich auf dem Schrott landen. Viele Probleme lassen sich mit Software-Tools oder neuen Bauteilen beheben. Rund 23 Kilogramm Elektroschrott produziert der Durchschnittsdeutsche jedes Jahr. Auch Computer werden schnell entsorgt, wenn die Leistung nicht mehr stimmt. Dabei bieten gerade Windows-Rechner viele Möglichkeiten, um sie mit geringem Aufwand wieder flott zu machen. Hier ein paar Vorschläge:


1. Hardware ersetzen

Egal ob beim Betriebssystem oder Gaming: Die Leistungsanforderungen an die Hardware steigt zunehmend. Zum Glück kann man bei Desktop-PCs alte Hardware einfach ausbauen und durch moderne Bauteile ersetzen.


Wenn zum Beispiel das Spiel ruckelt, muss womöglich eine neue Grafikkarte her. Vorher sollte man aber den Gerätetreiber aktualisieren. Viele Probleme lassen sich dadurch schon beheben.



Kratzende Geräusche von der Festplatte deuten darauf hin, dass der Arbeitsspeicher nicht mehr ausreicht. Hier kann eine Investition von 40 bis 80 Euro schon ausreichen, um auf 8 GB RAM aufzustocken. Zum Beispiel mit einem Speichermodul von Crucial.

The flexible detachable now has speedy 10th Gen processors, which offer a significant performance boost when compared to last year's Surface Pro. You can use the gorgeous, 12.3-inch touch screen display with the responsive Surface Pen, and the comfortable Type Cover keyboard attachment has a useful touchpad. We're also glad that Microsoft added a USB-C port. We just wish the Surface Pro 7 lasted longer on a charge.

If battery life is a priority, the Dell Latitude 7400 2-in-1 is the business laptop for you. But its 13+ hours of runtime isn't the only reason to buy this notebook; the Latitude 7400 2-in-1 has a sleek, flexible design, fast performance and some useful sign-in options. All you need to do is walk up to this Dell and it will know that you're there, thanks to its proximity sensor, making it faster to log in to the system.



The HP ZBook Studio x360 G5 is hands down the best business laptop for power users, provided money isn't an obstacle. This exorbitantly priced 15.6-inch laptop has it all, including a vivid, bright display and outstanding performance. Most impressive, however, is the workstation's uncharacteristically sleek profile and long battery life. It's also uncommon for a workstation to have a flexible chassis like the x360 G5's, and the device's touch screen can be used with a stylus.


If you're willing to spend and want the most powerful machine around, look no further than the Dell Precision 7730. This 7.5-pound workstation may not be the best for travel, but its Core i9 CPU and Nvidia Quadro P5200 GPU are capable of running even the most demanding applications, like 3D modeling or photo editing. But the Precision 7730 isn't all about performance.

Lenovo's high-end consumer business laptop, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme (Gen 2) has a jaw-dropping 15.6-inch 4K HDR display and blazingly fast performance thanks to its 9th Gen Core i7 CPU and quick SSD. A luxurious and durable design combined with an excellent keyboard makes the ThinkPad X1 Extreme one impressive piece of hardware.

Graphics professionals and 3D modelers who need a laptop that can handle demanding programs should opt for the Lenovo ThinkPad P1. This sleek 15.6-inch workstation is a desktop replacement in every sense of the phrase. With a Xeon CPU and Quadro graphics, the beastly P1 offers excellent performance. Not to mention, the vivid 4K display and comfortable keyboard are some of the best we've ever seen.


With the Yoga C940, Lenovo took a proven formula and refined it. Subtle design improvements, longer battery life (up to 11:46) and refreshed 10th Gen Intel processors make the Yoga C940 a worthy successor to last year's excellent Yoga C930.


As you'd expect from a Yoga-series laptop, the C940 has a premium, ultra-portable chassis and a unique hinge that doubles as a soundbar speaker. As a 2-in-1, that hinge can rotate 360-degrees to convert the Yoga C940 into a proper tablet. When it comes to viewing content, the Yoga C940's 1080p and 4K displays are crisp, vibrant and bright -- just beware, the UHD display drains the battery.

This extremely lightweight laptop has a good 1080p display and offers an optional discrete graphics card. The TravelMate P6 holds up surprisingly well against our favorite business laptops and should be seriously considered as an alternative to the ThinkPad X1 Carbon.



Thanks to their powerful graphics, gorgeous displays and great audio, gaming laptops provide an immersive entertainment experience in a portable package. Many also offer stylish designs, desktop-quality keyboards and the ability to use high-end VR headsets.

Die Wissenschaftler von der Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (USA) veröffentlichten die Ergebnisse in der Fachzeitschrift "Science" und bezeichneten ihren Erfolg als "Meilenstein" in der Entwicklung von künstlicher Intelligenz (KI).


Bisherige Computer-Programme hatten sich auf das Besiegen eines einzelnen Gegners beim Pokern beschränkt – darunter die Software "Libratus" von Brown und Sandholm sowie das Programm "DeepStack" eines Entwickler-Teams von der University of Alberta in Edmonton (Kanada). Diese Poker-Variante mit zwei Spielern wird als "Heads-up no-limit Texas hold'em" bezeichnet. Nach Angaben der Forscher stellen Spiele mit mehr als zwei Teilnehmern jedoch höhere Anforderungen an den Computer. Brown und Sandholm entwickelten deshalb eine Software mit dem Namen "Pluribus", die die Komplexität der Spielsituation reduzieren soll.


"Pluribus" wurde zunächst erprobt und trainiert, indem es "No Limit Texas Hold'em" gegen fünf Kopien von sich selbst spielte. Später ließen die Forscher die Software in zwei Varianten gegen Menschen antreten: In der ersten Variante spielte der Computer gegen fünf professionelle Poker-Cracks. In der zweiten Variante spielte ein Mensch gegen fünf virtuelle Spieler. In beiden Konstellationen setzte sich der Computer signifikant öfter durch. Unter den geschlagenen Poker-Profis waren unter anderem der Rekord-Titelträger der World Poker Tour, Darren Elias, und der sechsfache Turniersieger der World Series of Poker, Chris Ferguson.


Schauen sich die Profis die Strategien von "Pluribus" bald ab?

"Eine Partie mit sechs statt mit zwei Spielern zu spielen, erfordert grundlegende Veränderungen darin, wie die künstliche Intelligenz ihre Spielstrategie entwickelt", sagte Brown, der mittlerweile für Facebook arbeitet. "Von der Performance des Programms sind wir begeistert und wir denken, dass einige der Spielstrategien von Pluribus sogar das Spielverhalten der Profis ändern werden."



Die Entwicklung der KI hat sich in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten immer wieder in spektakulären Wettkämpfen "Mensch gegen Computer" niedergeschlagen. Vor über 20 Jahren besiegte das Programm "Deep Blue" den früheren Schachweltmeister Garri Kasparow. Vor drei Jahren war eine Software erstmals beim traditionellen asiatischen Brettspiel Go überlegen. Und vor zwei Jahren dann siegten Computerprogramme für Poker-Partien mit nur zwei Spielern.


Wozu die Forschung in diesem Bereich noch dienen kann

Die KI-Forschungen mit Spielen wie Schach, Go oder Poker dienen letztlich auch der Entwicklung von kommerziell verwertbaren Algorithmen, etwa in der Entwicklung von Medikamenten oder der idealen Strategie bei der Versteigerung von Mobilfunklizenzen.


"Es ist natürlich eine schöne Umgebung, in der man leicht demonstrieren kann, dass man mit KI Fortschritte erzielt", sagte Andreas Hotho von der Universität Würzburg, der nicht an der Studie beteiligt war. Spiele seien letztlich aber eher ein Anwendungsgebiet von KI, die KI-Entwicklung laufe unabhängig von den sogenannten Games weiter. Bedeutend seien zum Beispiel die Verbesserung neuronaler Netze und des sogenannten Deep Learnings. Hierbei handelt es sich um Verfahren, bei denen Computer mithilfe von Algorithmen und großen Datenmengen das Lernen lernen.


"Die Arbeit ist solide und die Leistungen sind technisch sehr beeindruckend – vor allem, was die Rechenleistung und die Rechenzeit betrifft", sagte Andreas Holzinger vom Institut für Medizinische Informatik/Statistik an der Medizinischen Universität Graz über die Studie. "Aber es bringt wieder die Frage auf, ob "Künstliche Intelligenz" tatsächlich mit menschlicher Intelligenz überhaupt vergleichbar ist oder sein kann und ob es gut ist, überhaupt von "superhuman' zu sprechen. Menschliche Intelligenz hat vielfältige Qualitäten – eben nicht nur in einer eng begrenzten Aufgabenstellung."



Am Dienstag veröffentlichte Microsoft ein monatliches Update für Windows 10 und andere Produkte. Dabei behebt der Konzern laut eigenen Angaben einige Fehler und schließt knapp 80 Sicherheitslücken – darunter auch kritische.

Unter anderem behebt der neue Patch ein Darstellungsproblem bei Windows-Mixed-Reality-Headsets und einen Fehler mit BitLocker, eine Software für Festplattenverschlüsselung für Microsoft.

Microsofts Windows ist auch in Deutschland mit 45,6 Prozent das mit Abstand meistverbreitete Betriebssystem auf Desktop-Rechnern und Notebooks. Aktuell ist der 10-jährige Oldtimer Windows 7 noch auf fast jedem vierten genutzten Desktop-PC aktiv (24,2 Prozent), das aktuelle Windows 10 nutzen derweil zwei Drittel der Windows-Nutzer (66,3 Prozent).


Am 22. Oktober 2009 brachte Microsoft Windows 7 als Nachfolger des erfolglosen Windows Vista auf den Markt. Damals sah die digitale Welt noch etwas anders aus als heute: Erst zwei Jahre gab es damals das iPhone im Markt, das die Ära des Smartphones eingeläutet hatte. 2009 brachte dann auch Google sein erstes Android-Smartphone "G1" auf den deutschen Markt.


Windows 8 überzeugte Nutzer nicht

Bereits im Januar 2009 bewarb der einstige Microsoft-Chef Steve Ballmer zur Eröffnung der Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas eine erste Beta-Version von Windows 7 – zu sehr saß der Misserfolg von Vista dem Konzern im Nacken. Auch der Nachfolger Windows 8 kam mit Startschwierigkeiten und überzeugte viele Nutzer nicht. Vor allem in vielen Unternehmen dürfte deshalb Windows 7 noch bis heute im Einsatz sein.


Heute hat Microsoft mit seiner aktuellen Version Windows 10 wieder eine solide Software-Basis geschaffen, die Flops Vista und Windows 8 sind längst Geschichte. Nur wenige Wochen nach dem Verkaufsstart war das System laut Microsoft bereits über 100 Millionen Mal heruntergeladen worden. Demnach entdeckten auch Unternehmenskunden das System. Laut Microsoft ist es inzwischen auf 800 Millionen Geräten weltweit installiert.



Das Potenzial der Software etwa mit der digitalen Assistentin Cortana, dem neuen Browser Edge und der Unterstützung für Touch-Funktionen hatte Microsoft seither auch mit seiner ersten eigenen Laptop-Reihe, dem Surface Book, unter Beweis gestellt. Nostalgiker, Tüftler und Windows-7-Liebhaber müssen dennoch keinen Kulturschock befürchten. In Fachmagazinen gibt zum Beispiel Tipps, wie man mit zusätzlichen Werkzeugen dem neuen Windows 10 lieb gewonnene Gadgets und das Startmenü verpassen und dem neuen Rechner damit ein Retro-Outfit geben kann.


Wer seinen Rechner auf die aktuelle Version von Windows 10 aktualisieren wollte, konnte vom System daran gehindert werden, wenn ein USB-Stick eingesteckt war. Jetzt hat Microsoft das Problem behoben. Microsoft hat ein bekanntes Problem bei Windows 10 gelöst: Jetzt kann der Rechner auch auf das Mai-Update aktualisiert werden, wenn ein USB-Stick oder eine SD-Karte in den Rechner eingesteckt ist. Das meldet Microsoft auf seiner Website.


Bisher konnten Nutzer am Update gehindert werden, wenn ein externes Laufwerk im Rechner steckte. Der Computer zeigte in diesem Fall eine Fehlermeldung. Für einige Zeit war unklar, was diese bedeuten soll. Mehr dazu lesen Sie hier.


Externes Laufwerk schuld

Grund für den Fehler war laut Microsoft eine "unangemessenen Laufwerkszuordnung", wenn während der Installation des Mai-2019-Updates ein USB-Stick oder eine SD-Karte angeschlossen war. Das Problem konnte auch bei intern angeschlossenen Laufwerken auftreten.



Laut Microsoft kann es bis zu 24 Stunden dauern, bis Nutzer ihr System auf die aktuelle Windows-Version aktualisieren können. Das Problem wurde am 11. Juli behoben.


Mensch gegen Maschine: Dieser Wettkampf geht bei Spielen wie Schach oder Go schon lange schlecht für uns aus. Jetzt haben Forscher ein Programm entwickelt, an dem gleich mehrere menschliche Poker-Cracks zur gleichen Zeit verzweifeln.

But perhaps the best reason to buy the ZenBook UX333FA is for its outstanding 11+ hours of battery life. Combine that exceptional endurance with a sleek aluminum chassis and it's easy to see why the ZenBook is one of the best college laptops for students.



The best portable laptop overall, the Late 2019 XPS 13 is identical to the previous model but now packs 10th Gen processors. Those chips, especially the six-core Core i7 CPU, offers a significant boost in performance over 8th Gen processors. There are so many reasons why the XPS 13 is a great laptop for college students, but price could be a problem for some.


If you can spend on one, the 4K model we tested has a gorgeous 13.3-inch InfinityEdge display -- with practically no bezels -- and now the 'nosecam' webcam is no longer, as Dell's engineers managed to fit it in the notebook's top bezel, which is still super-thin. If you want long battery life, opt for the 1080p model as the 4K version lasted just under 8 hours on a charge, a decent if below-average result.


The latest MacBook Air is only a minor update over its refreshed predecessor but it's still the best Apple laptop for college students. The new 13.3-inch system is $100 cheaper than last year's model and the display now features Apple's True Tone technology. Along with its sharp, 2560 x 1600-pixel display, the MacBook Air has powerful speakers and a thin, light and completely recycled aluminum chassis.

After finding that several laptop models could potentially be a safety concern to consumers thanks to potentially overheating batteries, the company took preemptive measures to eliminate the problem. The expansion covers several new models including the HP Probook 64x G2. Similar to last year’s recall, HP says the problem affects only 0.1 percent of laptops sold worldwide over the past several years and stems from manufacturer error.



And just like last year, HP is asking consumers visit this website and download its battery validation tool. One installed, the test will run a diagnostic on your notebook’s battery. If everything’s fine, it’s business as usual for you and your system. If not, the software will initiate Safe Mode and start the process of safely draining your battery. HP will send over a replacement battery and a person to install the part since some battery compartments are harder to reach than others.


If your laptop passed the test last year, HP is strongly recommending that you rerun the test just to be sure. If it passes the test again, you’re good to go and if not, HP will take the proper steps to remedy the problem.Once again, we applaud HP for taking a proactive approach towards consumer safety and quality control. Although, the defect only affects a small number of systems, it’s great to see HP take the initiative.

Was kostet eine Windows-10-Lizenz und muss es unbedingt die Pro-Version sein?

Die für Heimanwender ausreichende Home-Version gibt es ab circa 100 Euro als DVD mit Lizenzschlüssel. Von 25-Euro-Angeboten, die nur einen Lizenz-Key beinhalten, sollte man Abstand nehmen – sie funktionieren zwar oft, aber rechtlich bewegt man sich zumindest im Graubereich. Die Pro-Version ab 200 Euro bietet Vorteile etwa für Geschäftsleute, die auf Ihrem Notebook wichtige Dateien gespeichert haben – diese können mittels der Bitlocker-Funktion ihre Festplatte verschlüsseln. Eine andere Pro-Funktion namens Hyper V ermöglicht es, virtualisierte Betriebssysteme auf dem Rechner zu nutzen.


Ist das eine gute Gelegenheit, sich einfach einen neuen Rechner zu kaufen, auf dem Windows 10 schon installiert ist?

Das ist der teuerste, aber einfachste Weg. Allerdings mit einem winzigen Haken: Bei neuen Rechnern mit vorinstalliertem Windows 10 ist der Lizenzkey hardwaregebunden und nur in der Firmware des Rechners gespeichert. Wenn man dagegen einen Windows-7-Rechner auf Windows 10 updatet, hat man einen Key, mit dem man diese Windows-Version nach einem Rechnerwechsel auf dem neuen aktivieren kann.


Müssen Nutzer, die ihren Rechner behalten, Hardware aufrüsten?

Prinzipiell läuft Windows 10 auf jedem Rechner, auf dem auch Windows 7 läuft. Die Systemanforderungen sind ungefähr dieselben. Dabei läuft die neue Version eher schneller. Es kann aber sein, dass es für bestimmte Systemkomponenten keine Windows-10-Treiber mehr gibt – das kann bei Desktop-PCs zum Beispiel die Grafikkarte beziehungsweise die Onboard-Grafik sein, sodass man nur eine minimale Bildschirmauflösung sieht. Mit einer neuen, günstigen Grafikkarte lässt sich das beheben. Andere alte Hardware wie Scanner oder Drucker ohne Windows-10-Treiber muss man dann meist komplett ersetzen.



Muss es überhaupt Windows sein oder gibt es Nutzer, die vielleicht mit Linux glücklich werden?

Wer nicht auf Microsoft Office oder Adobe Creative Suite angewiesen ist, und wer nicht die modernsten PC-Spiele zocken will, kommt in der Regel auch mit einem Linux-System zurecht – für manche ist die Umgewöhnung eventuell leichter als die von Windows 7 zu 10. Die Installation ist heutzutage ebenso einfach wie bei Windows. Es gibt viele Anwendungen, die man von Windows kennt, wie Mozilla Firefox und Thunderbird, den VLC Media Player und LibreOffice.


Welche Linux-Distributionen empfehlen Sie Einsteigern?

Lange Zeit war Ubuntu die Standardempfehlung. Heute und speziell für Umsteiger von Windows raten wir eher zu dem auf Ubuntu basierenden Linux Mint . Hier ist die Oberfläche mit Desktop, Startmenü und Taskleiste ähnlich wie bei Windows. Und das System bringt alle möglichen Treiber und Multimedia-Fähigkeiten mit. Ich kenne über 70-Jährige, die mit Linux Mint besser zurechtkommen als mit Windows 10. Wenn Sie Linux Mint ausprobieren möchten, finden Sie hier eine Anleitung dafür.



Was gilt es vor der Installation von Windows 10 zu bedenken?

Anfangs war Windows 10 für sein rücksichtsloses Vorgehen bei Updates berüchtigt, wobei es auch schon vorkam, dass alle privaten Dateien gelöscht wurden. Diese Mängel kommen nun nicht mehr vor, dennoch sollte man vor dem Upgrade ein aktuelles Backup aller eigenen Dateien anlegen. Das sollte man ohnehin regelmäßig tun. Und da es während und nach dem Upgrade vorkommen kann, dass man mit dem Rechner nicht ins Internet kommt, weil eventuell Netzwerktreiber fehlen, sollte man einen zweiten, funktionierenden Rechner greifbar haben, um Infos nachschlagen und Treiber herunterladen zu können.

While working on the system, I had a fire extinguisher and metal bucket filled with sand next to me, just in case the battery decided to go rogue. It would be put into the bucket anytime I smelled the sickly-sweet, metallic odor of the battery's electrolyte or if the battery got hot or sparks came out. In case of a fire, it's important to remember to never use water, because it stands a good chance of reacting with the lithium inside the battery, making the fire burn longer and hotter.

Before I did anything, I needed a replacement battery. There are several places online to buy a new battery whose specs match the original for about $70. However, I managed to track down a $50 used battery from Chromebook Parts. The company strips old Chromebooks down to their parts, selling them to DIYers, like you and me. The site has a variety of parts for this and other Chromebooks available.


You won't need much in the way of tools, just a small Phillips screwdriver and a spudger tool. I've found that having a small tweezer and magnifying glass on hand can help with getting the small ribbon cables to seat properly.
From start to finish, the process takes about 20 minutes to complete. While these directions are specific to the Asus Flip C213SA, the general process should work with just about any Chromebook. Without any further adieu, let's get started.


Because of the battery's condition, the safest approach is to totally discharge it. Unplug the system, turn it on and let the battery run down until the machine turns off. Then, try to turn it on, and if the system starts up, let it run down again, just to be sure.Unscrew the nine bolts on the bottom of the case using a small Phillips screwdriver. It's a good idea to use a magnetic tool to catch the screws, which are easier to lose than replace. Put them into a nearby bowl.



Flip the system over and insert the spudger tool just to the right of the Backspace key. Loosening the keyboard takes a little patience, but you'll need to wiggle it up and down as well as right to left to loosen the keyboard lid. Work the spudger around the lid's edge, prying it free. If any place holds, go back and forth under the lid at that spot until the lid snaps open.


Gently pull the lid off from the base. Be careful because there are two ribbon cables that attach the keyboard and touchpad to the system's electronics. Disconnect them if they haven't worked free on their own.Unplug the battery pack and unscrew the battery bolts. The battery I'm taking out is puffy, swollen and roughly double its original thickness, so it goes right into the sand bucket, just to be on the safe side.


Plug in the replacement battery and place it with the label facing down into the battery bracket. Make sure it fits correctly and seats properly; then, screw the battery bolts back in.After feeding the keyboard and touchpad ribbon cables through the rectangular hole in the main board, plug them in. The magnifying glass and tweezers can help you align these cables prior to locking their brackets.


With everything plugged in, put the keyboard lid back in place and press it around its perimeter until it snaps into place. Make sure it sits flat and is locked in. Next, screw the back panel on. Finish up by replacing the screws that go into the lower part of the system's case.



After a few seconds, the C213SA started up fine. It looks and works exactly as the Chromebook did before the battery swap. Itn fact, it is the same system, only with a different battery. The system now runs for over 12 hours of video playback, about what the machine was capable of before the battery started going bad.


The final thing to do is to safely dispose of the old battery. While a damaged lithium battery isn't considered hazardous waste, it is a fire danger, so it should never end up in the trash. I took the Flip's original battery to my county's collection site for hazardous waste disposal. If there's nothing like this facility where you live, check your local electronics stores; many, such as Best Buy and Staples, take old batteries for safe disposal and recycling. Finally, the websites for Call2Recycle and Earth911 offer databases that contain a good list of recycling locations. You're sure to find one that's close to you.

The quality and safety of all HP products is our top priority. We recently learned that batteries provided by one of our suppliers for certain notebook computers and mobile workstations present a potential safety concern. We are taking immediate action to address this issue including a voluntary recall and replacement of the batteries. This action pertains to 0.1 percent of the HP systems sold globally over the past two years.


Customers can visit HP’s site to learn if their battery should be replaced. Impacted customers will have their batteries replaced free of charge and may continue safely using their device by placing the battery in Safety Mode and connecting to an external power source.


When we think about the components that influence laptop battery life, the CPU and display panel get top billing. However, the storage drive also uses a lot of power and having the right one can make a noticeable difference in your laptop's endurance. Our sister site, Tom's Hardware, just posted a detailed analysis of battery life from more than 100 different Solid State Drives and hard drives; the results may surprise you.


All of the storage drives were tested in a Lenovo IdeaPad Y700-17ISK with a Core i7-6700HQ CPU and 16GB of RAM. This slightly-older laptop has room for both a standard, SATA drive and a slim, PCIe-NVMe SSD, so it was able to accommodate all 108 drives they tested. It's not a particularly long-lasting laptop as its battery life ranged from 392 minutes (6:32 hours) on the most power efficient drive to 258 minutes (4:18 hours) on the worst. Tom's Hardware used the MobileMark 2014 battery test, which runs a variety of applications, but doesn't download any data from the Internet.


Because SSDs have no moving parts, you might expect that they would always use less power than mechanical hard drives. While most hard drives gulp more juice than their solid-state counterparts, there are some exceptions. Seven different hard drives allowed the laptop to last over 5 hours on a charge, while 13 of the 41 NVMe SSDs and 4 of the 58 SATA SSDs they tested fell below that mark. The most power efficient hard drive, the Seagate Momentus Thin (500GB) provided 331 minutes of battery life, which is more endurance than 7 of the NVMe SSDs and 10 of the SATA SSDs.



Overall, the average hard drive provided 5 hours and 16 minutes of battery life and the average NVMe PCIe SSD was actually a minute behind that. The mean time for a SATA SSD was a much-stronger 5 hours and 48 minutes.


While more laptops still use SSDs that connect via the SATA (Serial ATA) interface, an increasing number now use the PCIe-NVMe interface, which offers speeds that can be two to five times faster. However, with this added performance there's usually less power efficiency. According to Tom's Hardware's tests, the average PCIe-NVMe SSD lasted 33 minutes less on a charge. However, the longest-lasting NVMe-PCIe drive, the Samsung SM951 (256GB) endured for 6 hours and 24 minutes, which is only 10 minutes less than the best SATA drive, the SanDisk Z410 (6:34).


The longest-lasting SSD Tom's Hardware tested overall, which is a SATA model, is the SanDisk Z410 480GB (6:34) while the best PCIe-NVMe SSD is the Samsung SM951 256GB (6:24). However, when you're purchasing a brand new laptop, you don't have any choice about the make and model of SSD. Most manufacturers only disclose the SSD capacity and whether it's PCIe-NVMe or SATA.

Microsoft might have just fixed our biggest complaint with the new Surface Laptop 3. The software giant today released an update to the Surface Pro 7 and Surface Laptop 3 (via Thurrott) that is supposed to improve battery life, among other things.



In our Surface Laptop 3 review, we noted that the newly-debuted 15-inch model lasted only 8 hours on a charge. That's not a poor result, but it falls short of the premium laptop average and several competitors, like the Dell XPS 15. The firmware update Microsoft is pushing out to the Surface Laptop 3 (and Surface Pro 7) should lengthen that runtime, although we haven't yet been able to test that claim.

That said, the laptop's screen is very dim, so we recommend buying a monitor while you're plunking down several thousand dollars on this beast. While you're at it, why not spend a bit extra on one of Origin's legendary custom lid paint jobs?


Alienware's m17 R2 is one of the best gaming laptops in part because of its excellent graphics performance. But there is so much more to love about this sleek machine. For one, it has a gorgeous and surprisingly thin chassis. That, along with decent battery life, makes it one of the few laptops on this list that's actually portable. And despite that slimmer chassis, the m17 R2 has a comfortable keyboard.


It may have the older GeForce GTX 1080 GPU, but the Alienware 17 R5 can still play the latest games at super-high frame rates. Other things we like about this powerful machine are its relatively slim design and decent battery life, which make the Alienware 17 R5 a good choice for gaming on the go. You also get solid audio quality out of its dual speakers and 13 lighting zones for all the RGB you could ask for.



Sleek, premium and incredibly powerful, the Razer Blade Pro 17 is the best 17-inch gaming laptop on the market. It boasts an Intel 9th Gen processor and an RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU, making it great for gaming or content creation. A pair of blisteringly fast SSDs and surprisingly good cooling are some other standout features of this strongly recommended laptop.


You probably haven't heard of Digital Storm before, but this is one company you should have on your radar. The flagship Avon 17 is an excellent laptop that gets you fast performance, an incredibly comfortable mechanical keyboard and enough graphics oomph (thanks to an RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU) to play Middle-Earth: Shadow of War at 104 frames per second. If you can look past its dim display and poor battery life, the Origin PC EVO17-S is a solid gaming laptop because of the strong graphics performance it offers. You also get a snappy, RGB keyboard and a relatively slim chassis, all for a lower price than what other RTX 2080 Max-Q-equipped laptops cost.


Amazon is selling the Surface Laptop 3 (13.5-inch and 15-inch versions) for up to $349 off. This sale brings the 13-inch base model down to just $950, which is the lowest price we've ever seen for Microsoft's newest clamshell laptop. Note, most models are $300 off while the black 13-inch version is an extra $49 off with an on-screen coupon.


What's particularly great about this deal is that it applies to different configurations and color variants, so you can save on the exact Surface Laptop 3 model you're looking for.


In our Surface Laptop 3 review, we praised the 15-inch model for its surprisingly thin chassis, attractive design and bright, vivid display. It also pumps out loud and clear audio so you don't need to buy a Bluetooth speaker to listen to your favorite music. Der neue WLAN-Standard Wi-Fi 6 verspricht mehr Leistung bei geringerem Stromverbrauch. Doch nicht jeder Router beherrscht die Technik. Ein neues Siegel soll Licht ins Dunkel bringen. Käufer von Routern, Smartphones, Notebooks und anderen WLAN-Geräten können geprüfte Hardware künftig leicht erkennen. Die Herstellervereinigung Wi-Fi Alliance hat dafür ein Siegel namens "Wi-Fi Certified 6" eingeführt.


Mit dem Siegel dürfen künftig alle erfolgreich auf Kompatibilität mit Wi-Fi 6 (ax-WLAN) getesteten Geräte gekennzeichnet werden. Für Hersteller ist das Einreichen von WLAN-Geräten zur Zertifizierung freiwillig.Wi-Fi 6 soll den Angaben zufolge fast die vierfache Kapazität des Vorgänger-Standards Wi-Fi 5 (ac-WLAN) bieten, höhere Raten bei der Datenübertragung erreichen und energieeffizienter sein. Zudem kann Wi-Fi 6 die benutzten Funkkanäle dynamisch auf die verbundenen Geräte aufteilen, auch die Bandbreite der einzelnen Kanäle kann flexibel angepasst werden.


Wie auch schon die Vorgänger-Standards ist Wi-Fi 6 abwärtskompatibel. Das bedeutet beispielsweise, dass man auch mit einem älteren Notebook mit Wi-Fi 4 (n-WLAN) problemlos über einen Wi-Fi-6-Router ins Netz gehen kann – dann aber eben etwas langsamer, auf dem Leistungsniveau von Wi-Fi 4.Microsoft liefert regelmäßig Patches für Windows 10. Ein aktuelles Update schließt dabei einige Sicherheitslücken – und löst ein Problem, das ein kürzliches Update verursacht hatte.


Mit einem aktuellen Update schließt Microsoft einige Lücken für Windows 10 Version 1903. Darunter befinden sich auch – als kritisch eingestufte – Sicherheitslücken. Zudem wird ein Problem mit ausgelasteten Prozessoren gelöst. Das berichtet "Heise online".


Bei dem Update handelt es sich um KB4515384. Die Aktualisierung schließt Lücken in der Speicherverwaltung von Edge und dem Internet Explorer. Auch Lücken in SharePoint und dem Fernwartungsdienst Remotedesktopclient wurden geschlossen. In allen Fällen war es Angreifern möglich, einen Schadcode in das System zu schleusen.

Jeder sechste Deutsche ist mit der Einrichtung eines WLAN-Routers überfordert. Das ergab eine Umfrage der Sicherheitsfirma Kaspersky. Die Experten sind alarmiert. Denn ein sicheres Heimnetzwerk wird im "Smart Home"-Zeitalter immer wichtiger.


Router einstecken und lossurfen – wenn es doch so einfach wäre! Viele Nutzer empfinden die Einrichtung eines WLAN-Routers als sehr viel komplizierter. Das ergab eine Umfrage der Sicherheitsfirma Kaspersky. So trauen sich 17 Prozent der Befragten nicht zu, den Router selbständig und ohne fremde Hilfe zurückzusetzen oder wichtige Sicherheitseinstellungen vorzunehmen.


Die Experten sehen darin einen alarmierenden Trend. Denn ein sicheres Heimnetzwerk gewinnt vor allem in Zeiten von Saugrobotern, smarten Fernsehern, Türklingeln und anderen internetfähigen Heimgeräten an Bedeutung. Meist werden diese Geräte nämlich mit dem Router verbunden und können zum Einfallstor für Hacker werden. Jedes weitere Gerät, das an ein Router-Netzwerk angeschlossen wird, stellt ein potenzielles Risiko dar.


Nutzer sollten über Router Bescheid wissen

Umso wichtiger wäre es, die Konsumenten über diese Gefahren aufzuklären und Nutzer im Umgang mit den Router-Einstellungen zu schulen. Zehn Tipps für ein sicheres Heimnetzwerk haben wir hier zusammengestellt. Auch Kaspersky stellt auf seiner Website sechs kostenlose Leitfäden zur Verfügung. Diese sollen jeden Nutzer unabhängig vom Alter oder Geschlecht in die Lage versetzen, Viren zu bekämpfen, Internetbetrug zu erkennen, die Sicherheit beim Online-Shopping zu erhöhen und mehr.



"Ob 8K-Fernsher oder die smarte Waschmaschine – die Vernetzung zu Hause ist ohne ein sicheres WLAN zu Hause – mit dem Router als Zentrale – nicht möglich", sagt Christian Funk, Leiter des Forschungs- und Analyse-Teams DACH bei Kaspersky. "Die Sicherheit smarter Geräte im Haushalt, ist also vom Router abhängig. Daher sollten Nutzer wissen, wie man einen Router sicher einrichtet – und vor allem zurücksetzt, denn das ist die zentrale Sicherheitsmaßnahme."

Im August entdeckte das Sicherheitsunternehmen nach eigener Angabe die Anfälligkeit und konnte dabei auch konkret beobachten, wie Angreifer diese ausnutzten, um die PCs ihrer Opfer mit Schadsoftware zu infizieren. Das Sicherheitsunternehmen meldete seinen Fund direkt an Apple weiter.


Apple schließt Lücke mit Update

Dort reagierte man mittlerweile: Laut der IT-Seite "ArsTechnica" wird die Lücke jeweils mit den Updates "iTunes 12.10.1 für Windows" und "iCloud für Windows 7.14" behoben. Standardmäßig erfolgen diese eigentlich automatisch. Wer eines der beiden Programme nutzt, sollte sicherheitshalber aber prüfen, ob die Updates tatsächlich aufgespielt wurden.


Problematisch ist allerdings, dass die Lücke nicht etwa in den beiden Programmen selbst steckt, sondern in der Hilfssoftware "Bonjour", die stets mitinstalliert wird. Morphisec berichtet gegenüber Ars Technica, dass das Hilfsprogramm oft unbemerkt weiter auf den PCs installiert bleibe, auch wenn iTunes und iClouds längst nicht mehr vorhanden seien.


Gefahr droht auch, wenn Programme längst weg sind

Selbst wer eines der beiden Programme also vor langer Zeit von seinem Rechner geschmissen hat, sollte nachschauen ob sich Bonjour noch auf dem PC befindet und es händisch deinstallieren.
Dazu gibt man unter Windows 10 "Apps & Features" in die Suchleiste und startet die Anwendung. Hier werden alle installierten Programme aufgelistet – sie lassen sich per Klick entfernen.


Bei Windows 7 klickt man zunächst auf den Start-Knopf und wählt im rechten Menübereich "Systemsteuerung" aus. Dort findet sich unter dem Icon "Programme" die Schaltfläche "Programm deinstallieren".Das Herbst-Update für Windows 10 lässt womöglich länger auf sich warten. Zwar werden keine großen Veränderungen erwartet. Trotzdem gibt es Probleme.


Zweimal im Jahr bringt Microsoft ein großes Funktions-Update für Windows 10 heraus. Eines davon steht im Oktober an. Doch es gibt Hinweise, dass sich die Veröffentlichung verzögern könnte. Die Windows-Version 1909 könnte demnach erst im November verteilt werden. Das berichtet Chip.de und beruft sich auf einen Tweet des Microsoft-Entwicklers Zac Bowden. Grund seien mehrere Fehler in der aktuellen Testversion, die noch ausgebügelt werden müssen, bevor das finale Update veröffentlicht werden soll.

Windows-Experten rechnen mit keinen großen Neuerungen durch das Herbst-Update. Es soll aber zu einem reibungslosen Nutzungserlebnis beitragen. Microsoft wird das Update voraussichtlich wieder in Wellen verteilen. Das heißt, nicht jeder Rechner wird gleich nach der Veröffentlichung aktualisiert.


Mit der Windows-10-App "Ihr Smartphone" lassen sich jetzt auch Anrufe vom PC aus erledigen. Noch befindet sich die Funktion aber im Teststadium und wird nicht jedem zur Verfügung stehen. Microsoft testet derzeit eine neue Anruffunktion für seine App "Ihr Smartphone" für Windows 10. Damit sollen Nutzer bald vom PC aus Anrufe annehmen oder ausführen können. Das funktioniert zum Beispiel mit dem Samsung Galaxy Note 10 und anderen Samsung-Modellen.


Die Funktion ist Teil des nächsten großen Windows-Updates. Teilnehmer am Windows-Insider-Programm können sie aber jetzt schon testen. In dem Insider-Programm verteilt Microsoft vor größeren Windows-Updates eine Vorab-Version, um neue Funktionen zu testen und sich Feedback von den Nutzern einzuholen. Die "Ihr Smartphone"-App muss zunächst aus dem Windows App Store heruntergeladen, installiert und eingerichtet werden. Über die App haben Nutzer unter anderem Zugriff auf ihre Foto-Galerie, Nachrichten und Benachrichtigungen wie Kalendereinträge. In der neuen Version werden außerdem vergangene und verpasste Anrufe angezeigt und eine Nummernkonsole, um neue Anrufe zu starten.


Die Koppelung mit dem Smartphone funktioniert via Bluetooth. Der Rechner muss also eine Bluetooth-Verbindung unterstützen. Das Smartphone auf der anderen Seite braucht mindestens Android 7.0, damit die Anruffunktion via Windows 10 genutzt werden kann.

Microsoft liefert regelmäßig neue Versionen für Windows 10. Für eine ältere Version wird der Support in wenigen Tagen eingestellt. Nutzer sollten ihr System darum aktualisieren. Wir zeigen, wie das geht.

Angriffe durch Cyberkriminelle gehören heutzutage zum Normalzustand. Jetzt meldet der Antivirenhersteller Avast eine Attacke auf sein Netzwerk. Ziel war wohl eine beliebte Software für Windows.Der Antivirenhersteller Avast konnte nach eigenen Angaben kürzlich einen Angriff auf sein Netzwerk verhindern. Laut dem Unternehmen soll der Angreifer sogar Domain-Admin-Rechte erlangt haben. Das berichtet Avast in einem Blog-Post. Nutzer mit Domain-Admin-Rechten haben die höchstmöglichen Rechte im System.


Laut Avast soll sich die IP-Adresse des Angreifers in Großbritannien befunden haben. Die Angriffe auf das Netzwerk hätten seit Mai stattgefunden. Doch erst am 23. September entdeckte Avast verdächtige Aktivitäten. Daraufhin wurden Untersuchungen mit dem tschechischen Nachrichtendienst BIS sowie einem externen Forensikteam eingeleitet.


Nicht der erste Angriffsversuch

Ziel soll der CCleaner gewesen sein. Das Programm gehört seit 2017 zu Avast. Nutzer können damit ihr Windows-System optimieren. Bereits 2017 hatten Sicherheitsforscher entdeckt, dass Unbekannte Schadsoftware in den CCleaner geschleust hatten. Mehr dazu lesen Sie hier.

Wie Avast auf seinem Blog schreibt, habe das Unternehmen die Veröffentlichung des CCleaner verschoben, nachdem die Angriffe auf das Netzwerk entdeckt worden waren. Die aktuelle Version des Programms soll sicher sein. Ob die Angreifer von 2017 hinter der aktuellen Attacke stecken, kann Avast nicht sagen.


Wochenlang bot ein Unternehmen zu Spottpreisen Windows- und Office-Lizenzen an – offenbar illegal. Jetzt klagt Microsoft. Drohen nun auch den Käufern juristische Folgen? Antworten auf die wichtigsten Fragen.Wer macht nicht gerne ein Software-Schnäppchen? Werden Microsofts Programme im Internet verdächtig günstig angeboten, schöpfen viele Verbraucher Verdacht. Aber was beim Einzelhändler Edeka verkauft wird, kann doch nicht illegal sein? Offenbar doch. Das zumindest legt die Recherche des Branchenmagazins "CRN" nahe.


Doch was ist mit den Anwendern, die diese Produktschlüssel oder ähnliche Schnäppchen gekauft haben? Drohen ihnen nun juristische Folgen? Und sind solche Softwarelizenzen generell illegal?Wie legal sind über Dritte verkaufte Softwarelizenzen überhaupt?

Ein typischer Fall, dem man häufig begegnet, ist der Verkauf von sogenannten Product Keys. Das ist in der Regel eine lange Zeichenkolonne, die zur Aktivierung einer bestimmten Software eingegeben werden muss und sicherstellen soll, dass der Anwender tatsächlich auch das Recht hat, das jeweilige Programm zu nutzen. Manche Unternehmen verkaufen sogenannte OEM- oder Volumenlizenzen.



Erstere sind Softwarelizenzen, die üblicherweise an den Verkauf von Hardware gekoppelt sind, etwa ein Notebook oder ein Desktop-PC. Volumenlizenzen werden oftmals an Unternehmen verkauft; hier wird etwa ein einziger Produktschlüssel vergeben, der mehrfach zur Aktivierung auf unterschiedlichen Computern genutzt werden kann.


Laut Rechtsanwalt Christian Solmecke von der Kölner Medienrechtskanzlei Wilde Beuger Solmecke "kann es legal sein, diese Keys inklusive dazugehöriger Lizenz weiterzuverkaufen". Allerdings müssten dafür bestimmte Voraussetzungen erfüllt sein:


Die Lizenz müsste etwa ursprünglich in der EU oder einem anderen Land des Europäischen Wirtschaftsraums in Umlauf gebracht worden sein. "Billige Lizenzen, die aus dem russischen oder asiatischen Raum stammen, sind hierzulande nicht legal", sagt Solmecke.

Weitere Bedingung: "Der Ersterwerber hatte eine legale, unbefristete Lizenz, für die der erste Käufer angemessen bezahlt hat", erklärt Rechtsanwalt Solmecke. Zeitlich befristete Software dürfte nicht weiterverkauft werden.


Drittens müssten alle Softwarekopien der Vorbesitzer spätestens zum Zeitpunkt des Weiterverkaufs unbrauchbar gemacht worden sein. "Hieran scheitert meist die Legalität des Keyselling: Denn um dies feststellen zu können, muss man eigentlich alle Vorerwerber kennen. Käufer müssen hier eigentlich gegenüber dem Hersteller lückenlos die gesamte vorherige Lizenzkette nachweisen können", sagt Solmecke.


Wer solche Produktschlüssel im Netz kauft, kann sich dabei zumindest an einige Anzeichen halten. Besser nicht kaufen sollte man etwa Datenträger mit selbst gedruckten Inlays oder laienhaften Beschriftungen.



Auch der Webauftritt des Verkäufers kann Hinweise auf möglicherweise illegal vertriebene Software bieten: Hat er ein korrektes Impressum? Ist möglicherweise ein Sitz in Übersee angegeben? Sind die Angaben hier uneindeutig oder zweifelhaft, sollte besser ebenfalls vom Kauf Abstand genommen werden, rät Christian Solmecke.


Beides trifft auf die bei Edeka verkauften Lizenzen jedoch nicht zu. Hier gilt jedoch ein weiterer Punkt: Ein "absurd niedriger Preis sollte jeden misstrauisch machen. Denn die Preise für legal verkaufte Gebraucht-Software sind gestiegen", sagt der Rechtsanwalt.

Einfache Nutzung und auch für Laptops

Laut den Dokumenten soll Windows 10X nicht nur für Geräte mit zwei Bildschirmen erscheinen, sondern auch für Laptops. Das Startmenü heißt im Betriebssystem zudem Launcher – wie auch bei Android. Hier finden Nutzer zudem auswählbare Apps, Websites und empfohlene Dokumente.

Laut den Dokumenten soll die Bedienung "maximal einfach" gehalten sein, um "Nutzer nicht zu überfordern", schreibt "Inside Digital". Das Betriebssystem soll 2020 erscheinen, Windows 10 aber nicht ersetzen. Beide Systeme sollen parallel existieren. Neben Microsoft arbeiten laut dem Unternehmen auch andere Hersteller an Geräte, die Windows 10X nutzen wie Asus, Dell oder HP.



Die ersten Rechner waren ja so groß wie Schränke. Heute passen leistungsstärkere Geräte in unsere Hosentasche. Wird das mit Quantencomputern mal genauso sein?Ich vermute, dass Quantencomputer auf absehbare Zeit Rechenzentrumstechnologie bleiben – allein schon wegen der nötigen Kühlleistung. Aber natürlich kann man dann über das Netz mit solchen Quantencomputing-Dienstleistungen kommunizieren. Beispielsweise kann das Smartphone als Schnittstelle zu so einem Computer dienen. Schon jetzt ist der leistungsfähigste Rechner, den wir im Alltag nutzen, vermutlich der, der uns durch den Stadtverkehr navigiert.


Noch mal zurück zum Anfang: Google-Konkurrent IBM bezweifelt, dass Google wirklich ein Durchbruch bei der Entwicklung von Quantencomputern gelungen ist. Das Unternehmen behauptet, dass ihr Superrechner Googles Aufgabe in zweieinhalb Tagen schafft – und nicht in 10.000 Jahren wie Google schreibt.


Das ganze Thema ist sehr komplex. Klar kann es auch andere Lösungen für die Aufgabe von Google geben. Aber um es kurz zu fassen: Google hat gezeigt, dass in diesem Fall keine Lösung auf einem klassischen Computer wirklich effizient ist. Und letztendlich muss man sich die Frage stellen: Wenn jetzt Google statt 53 Qubits auf 60 Qubits hochgeht, lässt sich diese Aufgabe immer noch in zweieinhalb Tagen lösen wie von IBM behauptet? Oder sind es dann schon Jahre?



IBM bietet Nutzern mit der Plattform IBM Q Experience per Cloud Zugriff auf den Cloudcomputer des Unternehmens.Kann man also sagen, dass Google die Quantenüberlegenheit erreicht hat?


Diese Aussagen sollten wir auch nicht zu hochhängen: Es ist jetzt nicht die Singularität erreicht, die alles über den Haufen schmeißt. Das Experiment wird ja gerne mit dem ersten Motorflug der Gebrüder Wright verglichen. Der galt damals als Meilenstein, auch wenn er nur 13 Sekunden lang war. Natürlich kann jetzt jemand sagen: Wenn ich mich richtig anstrenge baue ich einen Papierflieger, der ebenfalls 13 Sekunden fliegt. Doch das alles wird obsolet, sobald das nächste Flugzeug gebaut wird. Für Leute, die Quantencomputer bauen war Googles Sprung von bisher 20 Qubits auf 53 Qubits eine riesige technische Leistung. Ich denke, das sollte man auch anerkennen.

So without further adieu, here is our list of the best laptops of CES.While Dell came straight out of the gate stating the Concept UFO is in fact a concept, it is one of the more fully-realized products that we've seen at CES 2020. In its simplest form, the Concept UFO is a Windows 10 gaming tablet with detachable controllers. But big picture, the Concept UFO fills the current gap in PC gaming, which is being able to continue to game seamlessly on the go after you leave your gaming laptop or desktop. So in purpose alone, the Concept UFO is important, but its execution is what pushes it over the edge. It’s super comfortable to hold thanks to its ergonomic grips; the joysticks are reminiscent of an Xbox One Controller; and games ran pretty smooth on its vibrant 8-inch, 1920 x 1200 display. It basically makes the Nintendo Switch look like a toy. — Rami Tabari


Long live the king. It’s not one sweeping change, but a host of incremental improvements that catapulted Dell to take the best laptop of CES 2020. First off, the XPS 13 is now virtually bezel-less, thanks to Dell’s InfinityEdge design. That means the company squeezed a 13.4-inch display into an 11-inch form factor. Plus, through some feat of engineering, the company managed to shrink the laptop’s dimensions, making it 2% smaller than its predecessor. Overall, the new Dell XPS 13 is an exercise in attention to detail, improving the notebook in a bunch of small ways that add up to a big leap for the system. — Sherri L. Smith


The ThinkPad X1 Fold is the world's first PC with a foldable display. Developed over four years, the ThinkPad X1 Fold has a polish you don't find in first-gen devices. Its refined design is made of a combination of leather, magnesium and silicon. Those materials come together in a package that is both beautiful and durable. Of course, the spotlight falls on the ThinkPad X1 Fold's flexible 13.3-inch, 2K OLED display that folds so that you can use it as two screens or expands to its full size for viewing content. When closed, the ThinkPad X1 Fold is about the size of a notebook, making it easier to carry around than a regular clamshell laptop. Lenovo is taking a risk by releasing the ThinkPad X1 Fold with Windows 10 Pro instead of the upcoming Windows 10 X that’s designed for foldables. But if there is any device capable of jumpstarting the foldable PC market, this is it. — Phillip Tracy



Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook is in a class of its own. The premium laptop is the first Chromebook with an AMOLED display. It’s the world’s thinnest Chromebook, at 0.4 inches. And it’s the first Chromebook with Intel’s new 10th Gen processors. The Galaxy Chromebook's 13.3-inch, 4K AMOLED panel is mesmerizing. We stood mouths agape staring at its vivid colors and exceptionally detailed picture. Only the Galaxy Chromebook's razor-thin chassis with its fiery Fiesta Red finish could take our eyes off the panel. It gets even better because Samsung somehow fit a 10th Gen Intel U-series processor in the laptop's fanless design. The $999 Galaxy Chromebook is an important step forward for Samsung and Google. Not only does it prove that Samsung can be a force in a space where it has historically struggled, but also that Chrome OS can be a vehicle for hardware innovation. — Phillip Tracy


One of my favorite laptops, the HP Spectre x360, is back with a much needed upgrade. I’m not talking about its 10th Gen CPU or its latest Nvidia graphics, but I’m talking about its swanky haircut (aka its super slim bezels). Of course, the narrow bezels aren’t just important to make the screen look better, but it also makes the footprint smaller -- 13% smaller in fact. To top that off, HP has invested its time in developing a low wattage OLED panel to net some additional battery life out of this beast. For context, the previous HP Spectre x360 (15-inch, OLED) lasted 7 hours and 46 minutes on a charge, so if it’s able to get even an additional 30 minutes, that would be a welcome boost. By addressing the only two complaintsI had with the original, the Spectre x360 could be on its way to becoming one of the best laptops of 2020. — Rami Tabari


It’s barely been three months and HP has already improved on one of the best ultraportables on the market. The HP Elite Dragonfly for 2020 is still stunningly beautiful, but now its made with even more recyclable materials to the tune of 90% of the chassis. And the Dragonfly is the first notebook with Tile integration, so if your laptop goes missing, you can easily track it down, The best part? The Dragonfly is now 5G capable, so you’ll enjoy the fastest network speeds on the go. Add in 10th gen Core power and you have what looks like the ultimate business laptop. — Sherri L. Smith



MSI means business. After years of complaints about its gaming laptop’s battery life, the company has taken over-the-top measures and I love it. The company added a 99.9 watt-hour battery to the new MSI GS66 Stealth’s 0.8-inch all-aluminum chassis. In case you didn’t know, it’s the largest battery the TSA will allow. In addition, the company retooled the design slightly, with a black-on-black chassis and top-mounted speakers. Paired with Dynaudio’s software, it has the potential to be the best-sounding MSI ever. The anticipation is high for this sexy stunner. — Sherri L. Smith


Acer makes some of the best laptops under $500, but it has made strides in the premium laptop space, and now with the Acer Concept7 D Ezel, it has caught the eye of business users, gamers and content creators all in one swoop. Now, if you’re not into gaming but want to go hardcore on video editing or any other taxing task, you can get the Pro version, which gives you the Quadro RTX 5000 GPU option for maximum productivity. Acer may have crafted one of the best workstations of 2020.

Apple, Dell and others have moved to low-profile key switches in order to cut tenths of an inch off their laptops' chassis. Microsoft hasn't — and I hope it never does. My fingers effortlessly jumped from one key to the next thanks to the Surface Laptop 3's bouncy keys, which have surprisingly decent travel.


With a cushy, soft-touch surface and quiet, satisfying click, the Surface Laptop 3's keyboard will be a reprieve to anyone suffering from Apple's stiff, loud butterfly keys. Then again, comparing this keyboard to Apple's keyboards, butterfly or scissor, would be doing it a disservice. Rather, the Surface Laptop 3's keyboard offers a typing experience closer to that of the brilliant ThinkPad keyboard.I typed at 108 words per minute with a 95% accuracy rate on the 10FastFingers.com typing test. That is right around my 109-wpm average and matches my typical accuracy. ASUS A32-K52 Battery


The 4.5 x 3-inch touchpad's soft-touch coating felt plush against my fingers as I easily executed Windows 10 gestures, like pinch-to-zoom and three-finger swipe up to switch windows, on the Surface Laptop 3.I was worried about the Surface Laptop 3's speakers' placement, hidden beneath the keyboard, but my doubts disappeared the moment Billie Eilish's smooth, clear voice filled our lab. The slow, rhythmic drums in the Grammy Award-winning artist's song "Idontwannaobeyouanymore" hit with surprising depth, and the electric guitar was well defined, even at maximum volume. Switching tracks, the strange pops, claps and arcade noises in Glass Animals' "Season 2 Episode 3" were nicely separated and Dave Bayley's voice was crisp and forward.


Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 performance

I loaded 27 Microsoft Edge (the new Chromium version) tabs on the Surface Laptop 3 and was never slowed by lag or throttling. Armed with an Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU and 16GB of RAM, the Surface Laptop 3 quickly loaded three 1080p YouTube videos, and I even watched Reverse2k win a round of Fortnite on Ninja's Mixer stream with all those tabs running in the background. There was a slight delay loading the last few tabs in another batch of 10, but it didn't bother me much.



We saw mixed results from the Surface Laptop 3 in our benchmark tests. The notebook scored a 19,078 on the Geekbench 4.3 overall performance test, losing out to the XPS 13 (Core i7-10710U). The 10th Gen Ice Lake processor in the Surface Laptop 3 helped it defeat the MacBook Pro (17,366, 8th Gen Core i5), the Spectre x360 13 (18,404, Core i7-1065G7) and the premium laptop average (16,559).


In our HandBrake transcoding test, we push laptops to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution. The Surface Laptop 3 completed that task in 24 minutes and 55 seconds, which is much slower than the times from the XPS 13 (14:25), MacBook Pro (14:42) and Spectre x360 (21:13). Even the premium laptop average (20:04) was faster.


Microsoft must have gotten the memo about its slow hard drives. The 256GB M.2 PCIe SSD inside our unit duplicated 4.97GB of multimedia files in 9.4 seconds, for a rate of 541.4 megabytes per second. That's quicker than showings by the storage in previous Surface devices and the Spectre x360 13 (318.1 MBps), although it still doesn't top results from the XPS 13 (727 MBps) or the MacBook Pro (1,220 MBps, 128GB SSD) or the premium laptop average (580.56 MBps).

The base Surface Laptop 3 (available only in platinum) with a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD is currently on sale for $799. Another $200 will upgrade you to a 256GB SSD and expand your color options to include sandstone, cobalt blue and black. For $1,299, you can get our review unit with a Core i7-1065G7 CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Doubling storage to 512GB raises the price to $1,699. Ouch.


There is a configuration with a Core i7, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD that sells for $2,099, or $350 more than a 4K XPS 13 with similar specs.
The Surface Laptop 3 is available with either a metal or Alcantara fabric deck. Once you've chosen your preferred material, you can pick from among black, cobalt, platinum and sandstone color options. I'm glad Microsoft sent us the sandstone finish, because the blush hue is gorgeous. ASUS A32-K52 Battery


Our Surface Laptop 3 looked like something that should be pulled out of a Gucci purse by someone wearing a rose gold Shinola watch. That is, the Surface Laptop 3 is a classy notebook with a modern design and premium materials. Do I miss the plush Alcantara fabric? Sure, but I don't have to worry about staining or wearing down with the new aluminum option. There are unmistakable parallels between the designs of the Surface Laptop 3 and MacBook Air. Those similarities have always existed, but the Surface Laptop 3's new all-metal design emphasizes them. Like the MacBook Air, the Surface Laptop has a sleek, minimalist aesthetic characterized by smooth curves and clean surfaces.


The sandstone Surface Laptop 3 looks especially similar to the new gold MacBook Air. That said, I much prefer the Surface's matching taupe keyboard to the MacBook's ugly black one. I'm also a fan of Microsoft's stylish mirrored logo. Microsoft prioritized form with the Surface Laptop 3 but not at the expense of function. The company made it easy to replace the laptop's SSD, although this drive is technically still not user-replaceable.


The Surface Laptop 3 feels durable, and there's a remarkable precision to the build quality that you notice only when you look closely at the chassis. I just wish Microsoft had trimmed down the Surface Laptop 3's bezels in the same way the company's competitors have done with their flagship notebooks. At 12.1 x 8.8 x 0.6 inches and 2.9 pounds, the Surface Laptop 3 is larger and heavier than other 13-inch laptops, including the Dell XPS 13 (11.9 x 8.8 x 0.5 inches, 2.7 pounds), the Apple MacBook Pro (12 x 8.4 x 0.6 inches, 3 pounds) and the HP Spectre x360 13 (12.1 x 7.7 x 0.7 inches, 2.7 pounds).



Microsoft has yet to put a bad display on its Surface devices, and the Laptop 3's 13.5-inch, 2256 x 1540-resolution panel is no exception. The touch screen is bright and vivid, and the 3:2 aspect ratio is growing on me. It's not 4K, but the Surface Laptop 3's screen is so detailed that the serial numbers of tiny armored plates mounted to the front of a car were discernible when I watched a trailer for F9, the upcoming Fast & Furious movie. Those iconic British double-decker buses were an appropriately punchy shade of scarlet, and the blue flames firing out of Vin Diesel's car were the color of blueberry cotton candy in that ridiculous flying-car scene.


I have two complaints with the Surface Laptop 3's screen. First, the display is way too reflective. My second criticism doesn't have to do with the panel itself, but with the thick bezels surrounding it. At this point, nearly every premium laptop has reduced its footprint and improved its viewing experience with an edge-to-edge screen. Reducing the Laptop 3's bezels is at the top of my wish list for 2020.



According to our colorimeter, the Surface Laptop 3's display covers 121% of the sRGB color gamut, making this display about as vivid as the premium laptop average (122%). The Surface's screen is more colorful than the panels on the XPS 13 (111%, 4K) and Spectre x360 13 (109%, 1080p) but not as vivid as the MacBook Pro's screen (163%). Reaching 348 nits of brightness, the Surface Laptop 3's display outshined the Spectre x360's screen (287 nits) and again came close to matching the category average (354 nits). The 13-inch displays on the XPS 13 (382 nits) and MacBook Pro (441 nits) are brighter than the Surface Laptop 3's panel.
