The other key component when considering portability is battery life. There is no point heading out for a day on the road if your laptop is only going to last a couple hours, after all.

Apple claims the MacBook Pro 13 will give you up to 10 hours of wireless web browsing and 10 hours of Apple TV app movie playback, while it says the MacBook Pro 16 offers up to 11 hours for both. That is partly due to the much larger battery in the bigger laptop — the MacBook Pro 16 comes with a 100-watt-hour battery (the biggest allowed by the FAA), compared to the 58-watt-hour or 58.2-watt-hour battery (depending on the model) in the smaller MacBook Pro.


In practice, however, we found the MacBook Pro 16 did not live up to Apple’s claims, only lasting around five and a half hours during an average workload, which included “dozens of tabs, streaming music in Spotify, and Slack.” The 13-inch is in the same range of battery life, averaging around six hours in a similar workload.


With all this power at its disposal, it should come as no surprise that the MacBook Pro 16 is, on the face of it, a lot more expensive than the MacBook Pro 13. The smaller MacBook Pro starts at $1,299, while even the most affordable MacBook Pro 16 will set you back a whopping $2,399 — over $1,000 more.

However, it is not an open and shut case. If you buy the $1,299 MacBook Pro 13 — or even the upgraded $1,499 model — you will find yourself stuck on an outdated 8th-generation Intel processor and slower RAM. If you want more up-to-date components, you will have to pay at least $1,799. Suddenly, the difference in price is not so great.


That extra $600 buys a much more powerful computer, though you’ll need to pay an extra grand for the Core i9. It is the absolute best choice if you must do demanding work, and if that sounds like you, you might just have to bite the bullet and go for it. That’s especially true if you need the extra graphical capability such as for 3D modeling or gaming. You also get a few other nice benefits with the MacBook Pro 16. You get the redesigned thermal system, meaning your processor will get throttled less often and your device will run cooler. You get a larger display with much thinner bezels, giving you a more immersive, enjoyable visual experience. And you get incredible speakers that are, quite simply, the best on any laptop, period.

If your workflow is more focused on heavy multitasking and lighter applications, the MacBook Pro 13-inch will do you just fine. It can even handle some lighter content creation like programming or photography.



When comparing the MacBook Pro 13 and the MacBook Pro 16, picking a winner largely depends on your current situation and the type of work you expect to do. If you do not need anything particularly powerful, saving yourself some money and getting the MacBook Pro 13 (or even the MacBook Air) would be your best bet.


If you can afford it, get the MacBook Pro 16. It not, there are lots of other great MacBooks to choose from. In a situation where you really need a MacBook now and do not like the larger device’s price tag or footprint, consider at the MacBook Pro 13. Just make sure to carefully consider what processor to get, and do not forget to give the MacBook Air a once-over in case it meets your needs.


Finally, if you can wait a little longer, Apple is widely expected to bring out a completely overhauled 14-inch MacBook Pro in late 2020 or early 2021. This will replace the MacBook Pro 13, bringing many of the improvements found on the MacBook Pro 16, like better thermals and a thinner bezel. If time is not of the essence, that might be your best choice.

Wer Windows nutzt, kennt sicher einige Tastenkombinationen. Einige von denen lassen sich auch dazu nutzen, um Schabernack mit Kollegen zu treiben. Mit diesen Tastenkombinationen für Windows 7 und 10 können Sie Mitarbeiter sicher schocken. Bedenken Sie dabei, dass es sich nur um Spaß handelt – also nicht übertreiben.

So werden beispielsweise die Buchstaben z und y vertauscht. Auch Umlaute gibt es nicht mehr. Klappt unter Windows 7. Um das deutsche Layout wiederherzustellen, drücken Sie wieder Alt + Umschalt.


Wechselt das Tastaturlayout unter Windows 10. Allerdings muss dafür ein zweites Sprachpaket auf dem Rechner installiert sind. Ansonsten passiert nichts.Wenn Sie diese drei Tasten gleichzeitig drücken, dreht sich der Bildschirm. Beispielsweise 90 Grad nach rechts beim Drücken von Strg + Alt + Pfeiltaste rechts. Wenn Sie den Bildschirm wieder auf die normale Ansicht drehen wollen, drücken Sie Strg + Alt + Pfeiltaste oben. Klappt unter Windows 10 und 7.


Falls es nicht funktioniert, drücken Sie Strg + Pfeiltaste oder Strg + Umschalt + Pfeiltaste. Ob diese Tastenkombination klappt, hängt auch von Ihrem Grafikkartenanbieter ab.In Office-Programmen startet die Taste den Überschreibenmodus. Das heißt, dass alle Zeichen rechts vom Cursor ersetzt werden. Im Normalfall wird beim Schreiben neuer Text eingefügt. Um den Überschreibenmodus zu deaktivieren, klicken Sie wieder auf "Einfg". Klappt mit Windows 7 und 10.


Öffnet im Windows-Explorer alle Unterordner. Je nachdem wie viele Unterordner sich dort finden, kann es eine Weile dauern, bis der Rechner die Arbeit abgeschlossen hat. Es gibt verschiedene Linux-Distributionen. Bekannt und einsteigerfreundlich sind beispielsweise Ubuntu und Mint. Mint mit dem Cinnamon-Design ähnelt besonders Windows 10. In unserer Anleitung zeigen wir Ihnen, wie Sie einen Boot-USB-Stick mit Linux Mint Cinammon erstellen und das System starten.Um Linux Mint zu testen, brauchen Sie einen USB-Stick mit mindestens vier Gigabyte Speicher. Alternativ können Sie die Linux-Mint-Datei, das sogenannte ISO-Abbild, auf eine DVD laden. Gehen Sie wie folgt vor:


Besorgen Sie sich das ISO-Abbild von Linux Mint von der Webseite des Betreibers. Sie müssen sich zwischen 32-bit und 64-bit entscheiden. Zum Testen reicht die 32-bit-Version. Welche Version Sie aber installieren können, hängt von Ihrem Prozessor ab: Der muss die Architektur unterstützen. Die meisten aktuellen Prozessoren sind 64-bit-fähig. Um zu checken, ob Sie derzeit ein 32- oder 64-bit-System nutzen, gehen Sie wie folgt vor:


Nachdem Sie Ihr System überprüft haben, laden Sie sich das ISO herunter. Um direkt zum Download der Cinnamon-Version zu gelangen, klicken Sie hier. Wählen Sie die 32- oder 64-bit-Version, dann einen Download-Server (oder den Torrent) und warten Sie, bis der Download abgeschlossen ist.


Hinweis: Auf der Linux-Mint-Seite raten die Betreiber, das ISO-Abbild zu verifizieren. Damit prüfen Sie, ob die Datei unbeschädigt ist, oder jemand Ihnen eine schädliche Software untergejubelt hat. Dieser Schritt ist nicht zwingend notwendig, aber empfehlenswert. Allerdings könnte der Verifizierungsvorgang für Anfänger kompliziert und abschreckend sein. In dieser Anleitung wird er darum übersprungen. Falls Sie sich dazu entscheiden, Linux Mint zu installieren, sollten Sie Ihr ISO-Abbild verifizieren. Eine gute Video-Anleitung dazu finden Sie in den Quellenangaben.



Nachdem Sie das ISO heruntergeladen haben, müssen Sie es auf einen USB-Stick (oder eine DVD) flashen. Dafür empfiehlt sich eine Software, beispielsweise "Etcher". Den Dowload finden Sie hier.Installieren und starten Sie die Software. Stecken Sie einen leeren USB-Stick mit mindestens vier Gigabyte Speicher in den Computer. Befolgen Sie nun folgende Schritte:


1. Wählen Sie in "Etcher" zuerst die Option "Select Image". Suchen Sie das heruntergeladene ISO-Abbild auf Ihrem Rechner und wählen Sie es aus.

2. Klicken Sie auf "Select drive" und wählen das gewünschte Laufwerk. Im Idealfall hat "Etcher" den USB-Stick bereits selbst ausgewählt.

3. Klicken Sie auf "Flash!". Warten Sie, bis der Vorgang abgeschlossen ist. Je nach System kann das mehrere Minuten dauern.


3. Starten Sie Linux Mint mit dem bootfähigen USB-Stick

Lassen Sie den USB-Stick eingesteckt und starten Sie den Computer neu. Noch bevor das Windows-Symbol erscheint, müssen Sie das Boot-Menü aufrufen. Je nach Rechner, beziehungsweise Hersteller, müssen Sie eine andere Taste drücken. Für gewöhnlich zeigen F8 oder F12 das Boot-Menü. Falls das nicht funktioniert, versuchen Sie folgende Tasten: Esc, Entf, F2, F9, F10, F11. Eventuell steht bereits im Boot-Fenster, welche Tasten Sie drücken müssen. Falls Sie im Bios landen, verlassen Sie es, indem Sie mit den Pfeilasten den Reiter "Beenden" wählen (Name des Reiters kann je nach Bios variieren).



Das Boot-Menü sollte alle verbauten Laufwerke und den eingesteckten USB-Stick listen. Wählen Sie den USB-Stick und warten Sie, bis das System, die Daten verarbeitet hat. Klicken Sie als nächstes auf "Start Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon 64-bit". Jetzt startet Linux Mint und Sie können das System nach Belieben erkunden und ausprobieren.


Um den USB-Stick wieder in den Ursprungszustand zu versetzen, müssen Sie das Medium formatieren. Nutzen Sie dafür eine Software, beispielsweise "SD Memory Card Formatter". Den Download finden Sie hier.1. Laden Sie "SD Memory Card Formatter" herunter und installieren Sie die Software.

2. Stecken Sie die SD-Karte in Ihren Rechner und starten sie "SD Memory Card Formatter". Unter dem Punkt "Select Card" wählen Sie den USB-Stick.

3. Als nächstes klicken Sie auf "Format" rechts unten. Der Stick sollte automatisch auf das Format FAT32 formatiert werden und wieder normal nutzbar sein.


Mit der hier aufgeführten Anleitung können Sie auch USB-Boot-Sticks von anderen Linux-Distributionen erstellen. Testen Sie beispielsweise die anderen Varianten von Linux Mint oder Ubuntu. The biggest difference — and we do mean big — between the Acer Predator Helios 300 gaming laptop and the other laptop deals on our list isn’t its specs, it is its sheer size. While the other gaming laptops use the Goldilocks 15.6-inch screen, this one boasts a massive 17.3-inch display for incredible corner-to-corner visual coverage. The battery life isn’t as bad as the MSI Alpha 15’s, but it isn’t the best either at only six hours, so charging will still be a constant occurrence if you’re traveling, but if your laptop isn’t moving around, this shouldn’t be a major issue. Oddly enough, despite being larger than the MSI Alpha 15, the Acer Predator Helios 300 only weighs 6.4 pounds, 1.35 pounds lighter than the former. The laptop also comes with its own webcam and mic for voice calls and video conferences. Likewise, don’t become obsessed with battery life, resolution, processor speed. If you’re on a budget — and most people are — you’ll need to learn to balance a variety of hardware. Make sure the laptop you want has the features and hardware you need, anything else that comes in under budget is just a bonus.


Ultrabooks have risen to become one of the most popular types of laptops, and it can be very tempting to automatically assume they are the best choice for you. They’re lightweight, small enough to fit easily into a briefcase or backpack, and the prices of many models — especially Chromebooks — are some of the lowest around. What’s not to love?


While most people will find the performance to be more than enough, creatives and professionals might need workstation-class hardware to handle the intensive software needed for their job. Instead, first look to see if the GPU is integrated, discrete, or (more rarely) a combination of both. An integrated GPU connected to the processor is fine for most average laptop tasks and very common, especially in more affordable laptops. But if you want the best performance you can get, you will want a powerful discrete GPU — and as with desktops, the most popular options are from Nvidia and AMD. Pay attention to how much VRAM is specifically allocated to the discrete GPU when making comparisons, as well as whether the GPU is a special edition (lower power) version, like Nvidia’s Max-Q variants.


Buying a laptop is complex, but if you do so with care, you should land yourself a great piece of kit. Its AMD A4-9120C accelerated processor and 4GB of RAM has enough power for simple day-to-day work, but we definitely dissuade you from running any demanding apps on this budget machine. The most powerful machine on this list is the Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2-in-1. This hybrid convertible laptop boasts a built-in stylus and pretty solid specs for a Chromebook. And just like the HP Chromebook 14, this, too, has a 14-inch 1080p display, which makes it terrific for watching videos. You can get the Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2-in-1 at Best Buy for $399 instead of $549 — a massive $150 off.


This 2-in-1 Chromebook is housed in a pretty sturdy aluminum chassis. As far as appearance goes, there’s nothing remarkable about Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14 2-in-1. It isn’t particularly thin or light, weighing in at almost four pounds, which is baffling since this meant to be used as a tablet. You’re definitely going to feel it inside your bag and it can be quite heavy when used one-handed.


The included stylus pen can be pulled out from the right front edge of the device. While accurate and precise, it’s actually quite tiny since it’s built-in, but we’re OK with that. Ports included are a couple of USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port that can be used for charging, one USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port, a 3.5mm combo audio jack, and a micro-SD card slot.


As mentioned, this Chromebook’s 1080p display is great, although the bezels surrounding it are quite large (at least they’re useful for preventing accidental touches). It supports multitouch gestures with active pen input, and there’s a large number of Android apps for note-taking and drawing that it’s compatible with. Its standard chiclet-style, backlit keyboard is pretty solid as well, bouncy and precise with just the right amount of sensitivity. The glass trackpad is also quite lovely. It’s not as large as we’ve hoped it would be, but it is precise, accurate, and comfortable.



This Chromebook’s performance is fantastic, thanks to its Intel Core i3-8130U chip, which is lightning-fast on Chrome OS. Working alongside 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, this Chromebook is capable of running multiple applications and browser tabs open smoothly and glitch-free.

Januar 2020 nicht mehr mit Sicherheits-Updates versorgen.


Grund für das Zwangs-Update ist, dass Microsoft die Update-Auslieferung ab dem 16. Juli auf die SHA-2-Verschlüsselung umstellt. Die bisherige SHA-1-Verschlüsselung gilt inzwischen nämlich als unsicher. Google-Forscher hatten 2017 nachgewiesen, dass sie sich knacken lässt. Mit dem Patch, der am 12. März veröffentlicht wird, soll sicher gestellt werden, dass Rechner mit dem alten Betriebssystem die neue Update-Methode unterstützen. Ab dem 16. Juli ist das eine Grundvoraussetzung, um weiterhin Aktualisierungen zu erhalten.

Laut "PC Welt" betrifft die Umstellung auch Windows 8 und Windows 10. Hier erfolgt die Umstellung allerdings automatisch, da beide Systeme die neue SHA-2-Verschlüsselung bereits unterstützen. Sie müssen daher nicht mit einem speziellen Update vorbereitet werden.



Druckerpatronen sind meist teuer. Günstiger ist Tinte von Drittherstellern. Diese Billigpatronen liefern eine passable Qualität, doch sind nur ein Drucker-Update davon entfernt, nutzlos zu werden.Erst meckert der Drucker und fordert neue Tinte. Wer das ignoriert, hat irgendwann unschöne Streifen im Druckbild. Dann wird es höchste Zeit, neue Patronen zu kaufen oder die alten nachzufüllen. Denn die empfindlichen Druckköpfe können bei Druckversuchen ohne Tinte zerstört werden.


"Vom Nachfüllen rate ich außer bei sehr alten Druckern generell ab", sagt Rudolf Opitz vom "c't"-Fachmagazin. Der Vorgang sei je nach Patrone sehr kompliziert. "Besser ist es, eine wiederbefüllte Patrone im Fachgeschäft zu kaufen. Hier kann man sich Rat holen, nicht funktionierende Patronen reklamieren und Leerpatronen zurückgeben."


Nachfüllgeräte eignen sich für Vieldrucker

Zum anderen gibt es die Option, Drucker mit einem festen Tintentank zu kaufen. Diese sind zwar in der Anschaffung teurer, amortisieren sich aber insbesondere für Vieldrucker wegen der niedrigen Folgekosten schnell. In der Regel gilt diese Variante als die günstigste, wenn es vor allem um den Farbdruck geht. "Originaltinte gibt es in Flaschen zum leichten Nachfüllen. Eine Füllung für 5.000 bis 6.000 Seiten kostet im Schnitt 45 Euro", so Opitz.


Wer sich dagegen auf dem freien Markt nach Tinte zum Nachfüllen seiner Tanks umsieht, stößt auf zwei Arten: Universaltinte, auch Dye-Tinte genannt, und Pigment-Tinte. "Generell gilt, dass man keine Universaltinte kaufen sollte", sagt Florian Rigotti vom Fachportal "Druckerchannel.de". Pigment-Tinte sei zwar teurer, sorge aber für eine bessere Qualität beim Druck auf Normalpapier. Und weil die Druckerhersteller verschiedene Systeme und leichte Variationen der Grundfarben Cyan, Magenta und Gelb nutzen, muss man beim Kauf der Tinte auf einen ausdrücklichen Vermerk achten, für welchen Hersteller die Tinte gedacht ist.



Billigpatronen – Vorteile und Nachteile

Wer dagegen neue Patronen kauft, muss sich zwischen Originalersatz des Herstellers und Patronen anderer Anbieter entscheiden. Dazu stellt die Stiftung Warentest in ihrem jüngsten Vergleich von Tintenpatronen fest: "Billigpatronen rechnen sich oft. Bis auf wenige Ausnahmen arbeiten die Geräte problemlos mit Fremdpatronen." Mit dem Kauf von Patronen anderer Anbieter würden Verbraucher meist viel Geld sparen – und die Qualität sei in der Regel passabel.


"Meist haben die alternativen Tinten zwei Schwächen", merkt Opitz an. "Sie sind nicht so lichtstabil – bleichen also in der Sonne schneller aus – und trocknen zudem schneller ein."


In der Vergangenheit ist es immer wieder einmal vorgekommen, dass Hersteller Fremdpatronen blockiert haben. Das ist zwar aktuell nicht mehr so. Aber weil es jederzeit wieder Firmwareupdates geben kann, die Patronen sperren, rät Florian Rigotti zu Vorsichtsmaßnahmen: "Man sollte sich beim Einsatz von Fremdpatronen also überlegen, dass man automatische Firmwareupdates über den Drucker deaktiviert oder dem Drucker über seinen Router auch den Internetzugang sperrt." Die veröffentlichten Updates sollte man dann aber trotzdem im Blick behalten, um sehr wichtige Updates identifizieren und gegebenenfalls doch noch aufspielen zu können.

No Windows laptop roundup would be complete without the iconic ThinkPad, and the Ryzen-based E495 is a sleeper hit. Another consequence of this unusual proportion is the keyboard gets cramped. Important keys like the backspace and tab are too narrow, and there’s also no backlighting. The power button and volume rocker are found on the keyboard, so using this on tablet mode can be a little awkward. Fortunately, the keystroke is comfortable and very responsive, and so is the trackpad. The Pro also comes with a digitizer stylus.


What makes the Samsung Chromebook Pro recommendable is its surprisingly fast performance. Powered by an Intel Core m3-6Y30, a dual-core chip with a 900MHz base clock, 2.2GHz Turbo Boost, and Hyper-Threading, this Chromebook is well-equipped for juggling multiple tabs. The stylus also works seamlessly, with no noticeable lags or stutters.

You can now see Instagram in all its full-sized glory instead of the teeny-tiny version on a laptop browser. Not everything is available though. Snapchat and Uber installed successfully, but we couldn’t get past the login page. Another major downside is its middling battery life, a clear consequence of its ultra-thinness. In our web browsing test, it was only able to last five fours. It fared better in our video loop test, lasting nine and a half hours.


Despite the shortcomings, the Samsung Chromebook Pro is still worthy of recommendation for its solid build, beautiful display, and fast performance. You can now get it for $490 instead of $600. It doesn’t quite match the level of material quality of the more premium Samsung Chromebook Pro (see below), but overall we’ve got little to complain about in terms of build quality. It has a sturdy hinge design that rotates 360 degrees so you can use it as a tablet. Together with the built-in stylus, you can use the Chromebook Plus V2 as a digital sketchbook for drawing, designing, editing, and more.


The Chromebook Plus V2 stands out in terms of connectivity, where it is far better than the Chromebook 3 and on par with the Chromebook Pro. You get two USB-C ports supporting data, display, and charging, along with a USB-A 3.0 port for legacy devices and a Micro-SD slot for storage expansion. Of course, there’s the usual 2×2 MU-MIMO 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 radios, and a 3.5mm combo audio jack.


This Chromebook’s 12.2-inch IPS display has an unusual 16:10 aspect ratio, which makes it slightly taller than the usual 16:9 Chromebook display, although not as tall as the 3:2 ratio on the Chromebook Pro. This results in some minor letterboxing when watching videos, but it’s forgivable. For a relatively affordable notebook, its screen is outstanding. Colors are vibrant and contrasts are rich, and the only fault we can think of is it isn’t the brightest display around. Again, considering the price, this is pretty minor and shouldn’t dissuade anyone from buying it.



Chromebooks are most often equipped with a webcam, but Samsung took things further and placed a secondary rear camera on the Chromebook Plus V2. The 13-megapixel lens is capable of autofocus and can take gorgeous, crisp photographs when used in tablet mode. Powered by an Intel Celeron processor that’s backed by 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable memory, this Chromebook runs smoothly when binge-watching Netflix, surfing the web, and writing emails. We have to mention though that while this Chromebook isn’t exactly slow, we did notice some annoying delays when we had many tabs and apps open. Lastly, since the Celeron processor and Chrome OS aren’t power hogs, the Chromebook Plus V2 can easily last an entire day under normal usage.


The Samsung Chromebook Plus V2 normally retails for $550, but with Amazon’s incredible $155 discount, you can get yours for $395. And if you pay via the Amazon Rewards Visa Card and get approval, enjoy an additional $60 off instantly, bringing the price down even further to $335.

The Samsung Chromebook Pro looks undeniably high-end and solid. Its magnesium alloy chassis feels sturdy to the touch, even though it is super thin and weighs a measly 2.38 pounds. The hinge is also pretty sturdy and rotates the screen to 360 degrees, turning the Pro into a tablet.



The touchscreen display is gorgeous and responsive, with a 2,400 x 1,600-pixel resolution. Colors are vivid, contrasts are deep, and everything looks sharply detailed. Unlike most of Samsung’s laptops, the Pro has a 3:2 display that’s typically seen on tablets. You get more vertical space for a better view of your work, and you’ll certainly appreciate viewing photos and webpages in portrait orientation. Unfortunately, because of its squarer shape, movies and TV shows tend to have thicker black bars above and below the picture.

Unterschiede gibt es natürlich in der Ausstattung. So wartet das teurere Modell der P-Serie mit einer hochwertigeren Grafikkarte (NVIDIA GeForce MX 150) und einem Intel Core-Prozessor der 8. Generation auf und genügt damit auch den höheren Ansprüche von Gamern und Video-Produzenten. Auf der 1,5 Terabyte (TB) großen Festplatte ist viel Platz für Videos, Bilder Musik und Spiele.


Mit einem Arbeitsspeicher von 8 GB ist das P17601 ausreichend, aber noch nicht üppig ausgestattet. Andererseits: Eine Rennmaschine mit 16 GB Arbeitsspeicher ist heutzutage nicht für unter 1.000 Euro zu haben. Insofern sind 8 GB durchaus angemessen und entspricht auch dem, was Experten für Windows 10 empfehlen.

Wer hingegen mit dem 499 Euro teuren S17402 arbeiten will, dürfte schneller an seine Grenzen stoßen. Dieses Notebook ist nämlich nur mit 4 GB Arbeitsspeicher ausgestattet. Das reicht nur für die gängigen Office-Programme. Für Multitasking ist so ein Gerät weniger geeignet. Um die Maschine nicht zu überlasten, sollte man beim Surfen also nicht zu viele Browser-Fenster öffnen.



Die beliebten Medion-Notebooks halten mit aktuellen Entwicklungen auf dem Markt Schritt und versuchen, den wachsenden Ansprüchen der Kundschaft gerecht zu werden. So bieten etwa die modernen SSD-Festplatten einen Kaufanreiz. Bei dem S17402 muss der Kunde aber im Gegenzug Abstriche in Sachen Arbeitsspeicher machen.


Ansonsten konzentriert sich Medion aber vor allem auf Äußerlichkeiten. Die Vorteile der beiden neuesten Modelle liegen etwa in ihren großzügigen Displays, einem ansprechenden Design und einem vergleichsweise leichten Gewicht. Die Preise von 799 Euro, beziehungsweise 499 Euro scheinen jedoch im Anbetracht der Ausstattung etwas zu hoch gegriffen.


Kostenlose WLAN-Zugänge für Soldaten sind in den Bundeswehr-Unterkünften nach wie vor eine Ausnahme. Der Bund will das dringend ändern. Dabei geht es vor allem um die Rekrutierung des Nachwuchses.


Nur auf rund jedem dritten Bundeswehr-Grundstück, das mit Unterkünften ausgestattet ist, besteht ein kostenfreier WLAN-Zugang zur privaten Nutzung für Soldaten. Ende März waren 29 der bundesweit 256 Grundstücke, in denen Soldaten untergebracht sind, mit einem kostenlosen Internetzugang ausgestattet, wie das Verteidigungsministerium auf Anfrage der Deutschen Presse-Agentur mitteilte. Darüber hinaus gibt es nach Ministeriumsangaben auf rund 50 Geländen lokale Lösungen, die von der Ausstattung eines einzelnen Gebäudes bis hin zur gesamten Liegenschaft variieren.



Bis Ende 2020 sollten flächendeckend alle Gebäude, in denen Soldaten untergebracht sind, WLAN-Zugänge zur privaten Nutzung haben, sagte ein Sprecher des Verteidigungsministeriums. Dies sei eine der Maßnahmen aus der "Agenda Attraktivität" der Bundeswehr.

Derzeit laufen den Angaben zufolge Vorarbeiten für die Umsetzung in diesem und kommenden Jahr. Gründe für die längere Umsetzung seien, dass eine europaweite IT-Ausschreibung sowie Verhandlungen mit dem einzigen Bieter gescheitert seien. Erst im vergangenen August konnte demnach ein IT-Dienstleister für die Realisierung der Pläne gefunden werden.

Ab sofort steht das neue Windows 10 zum Download bereit. t-online.de erklärt, wie Sie Ihren PC auf den neuesten Stand bringen und was Sie vor und nach dem Update beachten müssen. Microsoft veröffentlicht am Montag ein großes Windows 10-Update. Zu den Neuheiten zählt unter anderem eine Timeline, die alle zuletzt bearbeiteten Dokumente auflistet. Das Frühjahrs-Update auf Version 1803 soll insgesamt für bessere Bedienbarkeit und mehr Sicherheit sorgen.


Das Update wird ab dem 8. Mai ausgerollt und in den nächsten Wochen automatisch installiert. Für Microsoft hat es sich bewährt, die Rechner nacheinander "in Wellen" zu bedienen. So wird die Belastung auf die Microsoft-Server etwas verteilt. Es werden also nicht alle Rechner gleichzeitig bedacht und manche Nutzer müssen sich etwas länger gedulden.


Erfahrungsgemäß kann es auch schon mal mehrere Monate dauern, bis alle versorgt sind. Wer nicht so lange warten möchte, kann sich das Update auch per Direkt-Download besorgen oder in den Systemeinstellungen eine Aktualisierung erzwingen. Gerade in den Anfangstagen dürfte der Andrang aber groß sein. Die Größe der kompletten ISO-Datei beträgt laut "PC Welt" 3,8 Gigabyte in der 64-Bit-Version. Der Download kann als also auch bei einer schnellen Leitung durchaus etwas länger dauern.


In Europa wird das neue Windows sowieso aufgrund der Zeitverschiebung vermutlich erst in den Abendstunden verfügbar sein. Das Programm wird dann auf der offiziellen Windows 10 Download-Seite von Microsoft zum Download angeboten. Dazu bietet Microsoft auch einen Upgrade-Assistenten an, der den Nutzer durch den Installationsprozess leitet.


So kommen Nutzer schneller an das Update

Wer sich für das "Windows Insider"-Programm angemeldet hat, bekommt Updates früher zugespielt als alle anderen. In den "Update und Sicherheit"-Einstellungen kann man sich dafür registrieren. Man sollte allerdings im Hinterkopf behalten, dass man damit auch alle zukünftigen Updates früher bekommt. Microsoft nutzt das Programm quasi als "Versuchslabor", um seine Updates vor dem offiziellen Release zu testen. Wer sich daran beteiligt, riskiert also auch, möglicherweise fehlerhafte Updates zu bekommen. Außerdem fordert Microsoft immer wieder Feedback ein.



Umgekehrt bedeutet das: Je länger jemand auf das Update wartet, desto sicherer kann er sich sein, dass es ausführlich getestet wurde und keine Probleme macht. Geduld wird also mit mehr Sicherheit belohnt.


Die Alternative: Neuinstallation

Versierte Nutzer können das Upgrade zum Anlass nehmen, um ihren Computer völlig neu aufzusetzen. Eine Neuinstallation ("Clean Install") hat den Vorteil, dass man ohne Ballast zur neuen Version wechselt. So bleibt Speicherplatz frei und das Risiko von Konflikten durch veraltete Treibersoftware wird verringert.


Für einen "Clean-Install" brauch man das "Media Creation Tool", das man von der Microsoft-Seite herunterlädt. Damit lässt sich eine ISO-Datei von Windows 10 erstellen, die man anschließend auf einem bootfähigen USB-Stick oder einem anderen Datenträger abspeichert. Damit wird der PC dann völlig neu aufgesetzt. Achten Sie darauf, dass Sie auch gewiss die neue Version 1803 herunterladen und nicht etwa das Vorgänger-Programm. Sonst war die ganze Arbeit umsonst.


Egal, wie Sie sich das Update holen – gehen Sie vorher folgende Schritte durch:



1. Backup erstellen

Da es während oder nach einem Update immer wieder zu Komplikationen kommen kann, sollte man alle wichtigen Dokumente sichern, zum Beispiel auf einer externen Festplatte. Stellt man hinterher fest, dass alles sauber übernommen wurde, kann die Sicherung wieder gelöscht oder beim nächsten Upgrade überschrieben werden.

Robots have made some pretty major advances in the past few years. "1.000 Songs in deiner Tasche" – so bewarb Apple den iPod. Der handgroße MP3-Player bestand aus einer fünf Gigabyte große Festplatte und konnte tatsächlich etwa 1.000 Lieder speichern. Apple veröffentlichte das Gerät 2001. Startpreis waren etwa 530 Euro. Anfangs konnten nur Mac-Nutzer Songs per iTunes-Software auf das Gerät schieben. Der iPod war nicht der erste MP3-Player seiner Art. Der "Archos Jukebox" 5000 erschien im Jahr 2000 und besaß ebenfalls eine fünf bis sechs Gigabyte große Festplatte. Der iPod wirkte aufgrund seines Designs aber nicht nur edler, als die vergleichsweise sperrige Archos Jukebox. Die Revolution war der Multi-Touch-Bildschirm: Nutzer bedienten das Smartphone nur mit den Fingern. Andere Geräte besaßen eine Tastatur, die den gesamten unteren Bereich für sich beanspruchte. Bei seiner Vorstellung 2010 war das iPad keine Weltneuheit. Lange vor dem iPad fand sich das Konzept bereits in Personal Digital Assistants (PDA). Bill Gates präsentierte 2001 den ersten modernen Tablet PC. Betriebssystem war Windows XP. Nutzer sollten das Gerät mit einem Stift bedienen, später war es auch mit den Fingern möglich.


Die Geräte wurden aber nie zum Verkaufsschlager. Erst das iPad änderte das. Nach eigenen Angaben verkaufte Apple das Gerät innerhalb von 28 Tagen eine Millionen Mal. Das knapp zehn Zoll große Modell gilt als das erste wirklich erfolgreiche Tablet. Im Vergleich zu anderen Tablets zu der Zeit war das iPad schmaler und wirkte desgintechnisch edler. Job erzählte später, dass zuerst das iPad entwickelt wurde und dann das iPhone. Doch das erste iPad erschient erst drei Jahre später.


Der Apple III erschien im Mai 1980 und war der erste Apple-Computer ohne die Mitarbeit von Steve Woziniak. Vielleicht war das ein Grund für den Flop. Vielleicht war es auch der hohe Preis von mindestens 4.000 Dollar. Oder vielleicht war es einfach die Unzuverlässigkeit: Das Gerät konnte leicht überhitzen. Als Folge rutschten seine Chips aus den Sockeln. Der Grund: es besaß keine aktiven Kühler, denn Steve Jobs fand die Geräte zu laut. Um den Apple III wieder zu reparieren, rieten Apple-Mitarbeiter zu einem einfachen Trick: Kunden sollten das Gerät etwas fünf Zentimeter über den Boden halten und dann fallen lassen. Durch den Aufprall rutschen die Chips wieder zurück an ihren Platz.


Die Regulierungsbehörde hat nach eigenen Angaben vier 0800-Nummern aus dem Verkehr gezogen und sperren lassen, die im Zusammenhang mit dieser Betrugsmasche genutzt wurden.Die Masche mit Anrufen vermeintlicher Microsoft-Techniker ist nicht neu. Immer wieder nutzen Betrüger die weite Verbreitung des Betriebssystems aus, um Daten auszuspähen oder Nutzer zu Zahlungen zu veranlassen. Nach Angaben von Microsoft enthalten offizielle Fehlermeldungen von Windows niemals Telefonnummern.

Air can actually be electric, and not just in that moment when you pop your collar after a Phil Collins tune comes booming out of your Ferrari’s speakers. Zinc-air batteries, which are about the size of Smarties candies and powered by the reaction between oxygen and zinc, have been used in hearing aids for many years. Zinc is also cheap and abundant, making the technology economical as well as eco-friendly.


But there are limitations when trying to make this tech rechargeable. Dendrite crystals can form during charging and short out the battery. Ways have been tested to replace the zinc such as “mechanically recharging” the battery by physically replacing the materials, an approach that has been tried in Singapore’s electric buses. Numerous other experiments have been attempted with lithium-air and metal-air batteries with varying degrees of energy density, power level, and cost. Over the past decade, Tesla has filed several patents related to charging lithium-air batteries, so their potential may exist far beyond your hearing aids.


A few years ago, University of Idaho chemistry professor Peter Allen started expressing his fascination with battery science on YouTube. Almost immediately he found that viewers really respond to battery material, which inspired him to build a rechargeable iron battery as an educational demonstration. That project has led to more than 100 demonstration videos explaining the steps, problems, and learnings of an educational battery project.

“I don’t want to pitch myself as a battery expert, per se,” acknowledges the professor, whose area of expertise is biological chemistry.


In doing the YouTube videos, he realized that there was a lot to be taught and learned by building a relatively cheap do-it-yourself battery.

“Parts of the iron battery technology have been around for 100 years, so I think a lot of folks who might come into this with a lot of foreign knowledge would just say, ‘Well, that’s that’s trodden ground — there’s nothing to be found there,’” he says. “But being a little naive, I walked into it and said, ‘Well, let’s try it, you can find something interesting anyway.’”


After two years, more than 30 battery variations, and a lot of help from undergraduate students, Allen has learned how to balance the liquid and solid materials to create an optimal amount of energy density but with low power.

“Then we got into this whole question of: ‘If you have a chemistry that works, but works slowly, how do you speed it up?’”



Even if the team solves that challenge, current technology dictates that the best applications for an iron battery will likely be a neighborhood microgrid energy storage unit or solar farm power capture, given the space required and the speed of energy sent from the unit.


Will Allen’s iron battery ever be commercially viable? He isn’t sure that he team’s current findings, which have been published in a scientific journal, will get them there.

Having reviewed numerous battery inventions, he realizes only a few of them will actually make it to market. In scientific research, he explains, there’s a “valley of death.”


“You have the basic research that comes up with something really cool,” he says. “There’s a question of whether it can be commercialized. And there’s no money to ask that question.” Researchers who find enough money to answer that initial question will then, if they’re lucky, find investors who want to refine and commercialize the idea. “But there’s a gap between the basic research and necessary refining to make a battery commercial.”



In 2019, venture capitalists sunk $1.7 billion into battery startups, with 1.4 billion of it going to lithium-ion related research. But flow batteries, zinc-air, liquid metal, and many other technologies also got written checks. While lithium-ion energy storage will likely dominate energy storage for at least another 10 years, many others already look like they’ll power their way out of the valley of death.

As such, few have adopted lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, making it tough to know how good their recycling rate is. Some researchers contend they are easier to break into component parts.Some experts are betting on lithium-sulfur energy storage to replace lithium-ion since the batteries tend to be lighter and more energy-dense. Sulfur is also plentiful and cheaper.


What’s the difference between how lithium-ion and lithium-sulfur batteries work? Professor Linda Nazar, whose lab at Canada’s University of Waterloo has been studying lithium-sulfur batteries for the past 10 years, uses a parking garage analogy to describe the differences. Whereas the charging and discharging of a lithium-ion battery is like driving cars in and out of a parking garage, the lithium-sulfur battery is “almost tearing down the entire parking garage structure and then rebuilding it when you recharge the cell.”


The chemical reaction is akin to what happens in a lead-acid battery where there is a complete structural and chemical transformation. These “conversion” batteries have their own advantages and challenges. “They have the advantage of being able to store more electrons,” says Nazar. On the other hand, sulfur has relatively low conductivity and the volume of the batteries changes after discharging. The team at the University of Waterloo lab is tweaking the components in the battery to increase the cycle life and optimize the battery’s reactions. If some of the battery’s challenges are solved, Nazar envisions them being used in aviation as well as drones. The Zephyr planes and UAVs, which have flown accomplished some of the long electric-powered flights, often rely on lithium-sulfur batteries.


As it turns out, the periodic table element that’s so bad for your heart is pretty good for batteries. Research in sodium-ion batteries started in the 1970s, around the same time as lithium-ion energy storage. The two elements are neighbors on the periodic table. Then lithium-ion took off and sodium-ion was considered a less energetic also-ran for the next three decades.


“It looks like the best thing around,” says Nazar, whose lab also works with sodium-based energy storage. “Sodium-ion batteries give one the possibility of working with earth-abundant elements — positive electrodes made out of things like iron, manganese, and titanium — elements that are much lower cost. But getting that chemistry to work well is a challenge because it’s just not the same as lithium.”



Nazar notes that some companies don’t think it’s worth investing in sodium-ion batteries because the cost of lithium-ion batteries is dropping all the time.“I think it is probably worth investing a lot of resources in sodium-ion batteries,” she says. “If there’s an a-ha moment that has sodium-ion batteries working really well, with high-energy density, that would be a huge step forward.”


Believe it or not, you can run a battery on sugar like a toddler hopped up on cake pops. Sony first published research about the reaction in which maltodextrin is oxidized to create energy in 2007. Although the material availability and eco-friendliness of sugar batteries is much higher than lithium-ion ones, the voltage created by their chemical reaction is notably lower. So, you’ll probably want to hold off feeding your Tesla a box of Crunchberries.



Although the original concept first appeared in 2007, the sugar battery concept still has some juice left in it. In 2016, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology team led by Professor Michael Strano created a device called the Thermopower Wave, which is much more efficient than previous sugar battery incarnations and can power a commercial LED light. This is an exciting development because sugar is highly abundant, so If we can figure out a viable way to produce these batteries, we could presumably scale that technology up quickly.

Smaller 12-inch options like the Pixelbook or HP Chromebook x2 are some of our favorites, but there are a wealth of great 15-inch options as well. The best 13-inch Chromebook, though, is the Acer Chromebook Spin 13. It’s a 2-in-1 with a touchscreen, featuring an excellent keyboard, a sturdy aluminum chassis, and a crisp 1080p display.


Before you balk at the idea of spending over $500 on a Chromebook, don’t forget that the Acer Chromebok Spin 13 comes with a quad-core, 8th-gen Core i5 Intel processor inside. That means if you want to hook up an external display and get some serious multitasking done, this Chromebook should be able to handle your workload.

It might not be as stunning as the Pixelbook, but if you need a slightly larger laptop, the Acer Chromebook Spin 13 is your best option.


The latest HP Spectre x360, released in late 2019, offers some of the most capable hardware and the greatest versatility among 13-inch laptops. As a 2-in-1, it has the ability to fold up into an ultra-portable tablet for ease of use with its responsive and detailed touch screen. It’s powerful, has incredibly long battery life thanks to an innovative Intel low-power LCD display, and is impressively capable in both tablet and laptop mode. Typically, 2-in-1s are better at one than the other, but the Spectre x360 excels in both areas.



The Spectre x360 130 has also been updated to Intel’s 10th-gen Ice Lake CPUs, and so offers better graphics performance with Intel’s updated Iris Plus graphics. Maybe even better, HP shave off the bezels and, thanks to a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio, the Spectre x360 13 is now one of the smallest 13-inch laptops on the market — clamshell or 2-in-1.


It’s our favorite convertible laptop of even the best 2-in-1s, and it easily competes with the best entries on this list. In fact, it’s neck-and-neck with the XPS 13 as the best choice among 13-inch laptops. With capable internal hardware and a stunning “gem-cut” design that doesn’t skimp on rigidity, it’s surprisingly economical too. Other 2-in-1s at this size might have the odd feature that betters it, but they’re typically a few hundred dollars more expensive, making the Spectre x360 a real value buy.


You are going to find better dedicated laptops and better dedicated tablets, but for a device that does both well, there isn’t a 13-inch 2-in-1 around that can hold a candle to the Spectre x360.


Yes, it definitely does. The change in size can make things like working in applications side by side much more fluid. The overall size of the laptop also makes a difference in portability. Sliding a 15-inch laptop into a backpack isn’t always possible, and neither is trying to use it cramped locations like a small coffee shop table or on an airplane.



Perhaps more importantly, though, there are significant differences in configuration options between 13-inch and 15-inch laptops. Take the Dell XPS 13 and XPS 15, for example. The XPS 13 maxes out at a four-core processor with integrated graphics, while the XPS 15 can now include up to an eight-core processor with a discrete GTX 1650 graphics card. The extra space in the chassis allows for these more powerful components, meaning they’ll provide a significant boost in performance.
