When you’re editing video, you want plenty of space to view both the results and your favorite application’s interface. But, if you’re using a laptop rather than a desktop PC, then you want to be able to do your editing on the go. That’s where 15-inch laptops come in — they’re both powerful and, thanks to today’s thin-bezel movement, highly portable.


The best 15-inch laptop around is the Dell XPS 15 — and in 2020, Dell has relaunched the line with a whole new design. It’s gorgeous. It has even thinner bezels, now surrounding a 16:10 aspect ratio screen. The screen isn’t bigger, but it feels far more immersive thanks to the thin borders. There’s also some improved speakers, a larger touchpad, and a four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Dell even throws in the full-size SD card slot — a huge convenience for video editors.

Auf den Energieverbrauch des Monitors müssen Käufer nicht mehr besonders achten. "Gerade bei kleinen Monitoren mit LED-Backlight ist das kein Thema mehr", sagt Ulrike Kuhlmann. Vom Kauf eines gebrauchten Gerätes rät die Expertin eher ab: "Dazu sind die neuen Monitore einfach zu günstig." Lediglich bei teuren Bildschirmen ab 1000 Euro könne sich der Gebrauchtkauf lohnen.


Ebenfalls nicht zwingend notwendig sind integrierte Lautsprecher. Die sind zwar praktisch für alle, die keine externe Boxen anschließen möchten, bieten aber qualitativ meist nur gerade genug für Systemklänge, nicht aber etwa fürs Musikhören.


Vermeintlichen Prüf- oder Qualitätssiegeln sollten Käufer keine große Beachtung schenken, rät Michael Gundall. "Viele Hersteller haben eigene Siegel. Die sind nicht sehr aussagekräftig." Hilfreicher sei es, sich auf seine eigenen Sinne zu verlassen. Im Geschäft könne man sich beispielsweise leicht einen Eindruck von der Bildqualität des Monitors verschaffen.



Während auf den neuesten Fritz-Boxen bereits das Betriebssystem Fritz-OS 7.02 läuft, kommen nun auch ältere Geräte in den Genuss von Fritz-OS 7. Neben deutlich verbesserter WLAN-Leistungen und einer aufgeräumteren Oberfläche, rüstet AVM in der siebten Version insbesonders die Mesh-Technologie der Router ordentlich auf.


So funktioniert Mesh: Normalerweise bauen WLAN-Repeater für die Verbesserung der Reichweite eine Verbindung zum Router auf. Die Mesh-Technologie ermöglicht jedoch die Kommunikation zwischen den Repeatern untereinander, wodurch eine schnellere und stabilere WLAN-Abdeckung möglich ist.Mit Fritz-OS 7 lassen sich auch andere, ältere Fritz-Boxen als Mesh-Repeater einsetzen. Kaufen Sie sich beispielsweise eine neue Fritz-Box, dann können Sie das ältere Modell auch als Repeater zur Verbesserung der WLAN-Reichweite im gesamten Haus oder Wohnung nutzen.


Schon seit längerer Zeit lassen sich vernetzte Geräte wie Heizungsthermostate und Steckdosen über die Fritz-Box vernetzen und steuern. Somit wird keine zusätzliche Basisstation dafür notwendig. Bisher funktionierte dies jedoch nur mit dem AVM-eigenen Fritz-DECT-Standard. Für starken WLAN-Empfang im ganzen Haus soll auch der neu vorgestellte Fritz-Repeater 3000 sorgen. Der WLAN-Verstärker ist für die Mesh-Technologie konzipiert worden. So funkt er nicht nur im 2,4-Gigahertz- und 5-Gigahertz-Frequenzbereich für Smartphones und Notebooks, sondern auch auf einem zusätzlichen 5-Gigahertz-WLAN-Band. Dieses separate Band ist nur für die Kommunikation der Mesh-Geräte untereinander gedacht. Das sorgt für bessere Verbindung und mehr Geschwindigkeit. Der Repeater soll bis Ende des Jahres in den Handel kommen. Die unverbindliche Preisempfehlung von AVM liegt bei 129 Euro.

Soll es ein neuer Bildschirm für den PC sein, fangen die Probleme an: Nicht, dass es ein Problem wäre, geeignete Modelle zu finden - im Gegenteil. Man hat die Wahl zwischen vielen Modellen. Bis zu mehreren tausend Euro lassen sich für einen Monitor anlegen. Das ist aber meistens nicht nötig.


"Wer einen neuen Monitor kaufen möchte, sollte sich zunächst überlegen, für welche Anwendungen er ihn nutzt", rät Ulrike Kuhlmann vom "c't"-Fachmagazin. Wer keine Fotos bearbeitet oder Computerspiele spielt, stelle nur geringe Anforderungen. "Zum Surfen und Schreiben ist fast jeder Monitor geeignet."


Damit die Nutzung des neuen Bildschirms komfortabel ist, sollte man beim Kauf vor allem auf ergonomische Eigenschaften achten, rät Jenny Braune von der Stiftung Warentest. "Wenn man später am Schreibtisch sitzt, sollten die Augen ungefähr auf Höhe der oberen Kante des Bildschirms sein. Diese Einstellung beugt Nackenproblemen vor." Hierzu sollte der Fuß des Monitors höhenverstellbar sein und eine stabile Verarbeitung vorweisen, um nicht zu wackeln.


Die Größe des Bildschirms sollte danach gewählt werden, wie und woran man arbeitet. Wenn nur gelegentlich eine E-Mail geschrieben wird, sei ein kleiner Monitor ausreichend. "Öffnet man gerne zwei Dokumente nebeneinander, sollte der Bildschirm etwas breiter sein", rät Jenny Braune. "Für Spiele oder Bildbearbeitungen, bei denen man verschiedene Reiter oder Programme gleichzeitig öffnet, sind sehr große Bildschirme sinnvoll."



Ulrike Kuhlmann empfiehlt, einen Bildschirm mit mindestens 22 Zoll Bildschirmdiagonale und Full-HD-Auflösung (1920x1080 Pixel) zu kaufen, der schon ab rund 100 Euro zu haben ist. Von günstigeren Geräten rät sie ab, da die Auflösung dann zu niedrig sei. Generell steige mit der Höhe der Auflösung auch der Preis der Bildschirme. "Für Monitore mit Ultra HD, auch 4K genannt, muss man ungefähr 300 Euro pro Gerät rechnen." Für Büroarbeiten sei das aber nicht nötig, zumal nicht jede Grafikkarte 4K unterstützt. Außerdem sei das Bild bei Ultra HD zwar super fein aufgelöst, aber auch kleiner, was für Leute ab 50 Jahren mitunter zu klein sein kann, so Kuhlmann.

Neben der Auflösung ist auch die Display-Technologie wichtig für die Bildqualität. Dabei seien Monitore mit TN-Technik "nicht mehr zeitgemäß", findet Ulrike Kuhlmann. Sie empfiehlt stattdessen Monitore mit MVA/PVA- oder IPS-Technik.


Auch die Bildwiederholrate spielt eine Rolle. 60 Hertz seien für die Büroarbeit zwingend notwendig, für Gamer sei eine höhere Frequenzen von etwa 120 Hertz interessant, sagt Kuhlmann.



Grundsätzlich rät Ulrike Kuhlmann zu matten Displays, da sich in glänzenden Oberflächen zu viel spiegelt. Das Gehirn sei zwar in der Lage, die Spiegelung auszublenden, das sei aber anstrengend. Ebenso wie der blaue Anteil im Lichtspektrum, das der Monitor abstrahlt. Dieser hält tendenziell wach und kann bei abendlicher PC-Arbeit zu einem schlechteren Schlaf führen. Manche Monitore enthalten Filter, die das blaue Licht in gelbes umwandeln, andere haben diese Einstellung im Betriebssystem. Dieses Feature kann die Augen entlasten, erklärt die Expertin vom "c't"-Fachmagazin.

The MacBook Air can last up to eight hours with light web browsing. While not exactly a bad number, that falls well short of Huawei’s MateBook X Pro, which managed 9.5 hours in our test.


If you’re determined to buy a MacBook but don’t want to shell out too much money, then the MacBook Air is for you. It’s a well-rounded portable laptop that boasts a solid performance and premium build quality. Get the latest version of the MacBook Air for $900.


The MacBook Pro 15 looks almost exactly like its 2017 and 2016 predecessors, save for one significant hardware upgrade: Its keyboard. One of the things we disliked about the older model was its low-travel keyboard, which left users feeling like they were typing on a block of wood. Thankfully, Apple has gone a long way toward fixing this issue. The keys now have a softer feel and they’re no longer obnoxiously loud. Overall, typing has become a more pleasurable experience.



As usual, the MacBook Pro 15 offers industry-leading display and sound. The 15-inch screen is a thing of beauty, with Apple’s 16:10 aspect ratio (most laptop screens are 3:2) providing more vertical space for a fuller view of your work. Colors are extremely accurate, black levels are great, and images look completely natural, which makes this a great laptop for photographers and creative professionals. The same goes for its up-firing stereo speakers, which offer an incredibly loud room-filling sound that retains the richness of spoken words and the subtleties of music.


Unfortunately, the MacBook Pro 15 still lacks ports. There are four Thunderbolt 3 ports and a headphone jack. This decision may be forward-thinking as more and more peripheral devices are being outfitted with USB-C, but the lack of an SD card slot is odd since this is being marketed to creatives.

The MacBook Pro 15 now boasts more power courtesy of its Intel core i7 processor. With a jump up to six cores, we saw a huge boost in performance. The improvement is also down to Apple’s MacBook Pro software patch which fixed a throttling issue. You can open multiple heavy programs like Photoshop and Final Cut Pro X simultaneously and operation will remain glitch-free.


This laptop’s battery life is decent. Apple claims it can last 10 hours on a single charge, and we saw close to that in our high-definition video loop test. Web browsing was decidedly less impressive at eight hours. These numbers aren’t terrible, but we’ve seen better.

The MacBook Pro 15 is the most powerful MacBook yet and has been future-proofed through its port selection. It comes at a high cost, but if it is peerless performance you’re after, it won’t disappoint. Get one for a huge $450 off on Best Buy. Instead of its usual price of $2,400, get it for $1,950.



The XPS 13 is one attractive Ultrabook. Its anodized aluminum chassis comes in Alpine White, Rose Gold, or Platinum Silver that has a faint pearlescent sheen to it. The Dell logo sits solitary yet triumphant in the center of the lid. The webcam, long been derided as the “nosecam” because of its unfortunate placement at the bottom of the screen, has now migrated to its rightful place at the top center. It also happens to be the tiniest webcam we’ve ever seen, although it can still take a decent picture.


What’s more, the webcam is compatible with Windows Hello so you can log in with just your face. Outlining the screen is what Dell calls the InfinityEdge bezel, and it is beautifully scant and modern. With dimensions of 11.9 x 7.8 x 0.5 inches, this 2.7-pound laptop is super portable and would be the perfect partner of mobile professionals.

Experten gehen davon aus, dass ein kurzfristig auftretender Fehler ("Blocking Bug") in dem Programm-Update entdeckt wurde, der seine Auslieferung verzögert. Microsoft hat sich bisher nicht dazu geäußert und keinen Starttermin genannt. Der nächste mögliche Termin, sagen Windows-Experten, sei nun der 17. April 2018.


Viele in die Jahre gekommenen Grafikkarten des Herstellers Nvidia werden künftig keine neuen Treiber und Funktionen mehr bekommen. Auch die "Geforce Experience" gibt es in neuer Version nur noch für 64-Bit-Systeme.



Nvidia setzt künftig nur noch auf 64 Bit. Alle neu entwickelten Treiber werden nur noch für die 64-Bit-Ausgaben von Windows 7, 8, 8.1 und 10 sowie Linux und FreeBSD veröffentlicht. Darauf weist der Grafikkartenhersteller in einem Support-Dokument hin. Für 32-Bit-Systeme soll es noch bis Ende 2019 Updates für kritische Sicherheitslücken geben. Aktuelle Software für 32-Bit-Betriebssysteme und Grafikchips wird weiter laufen, erhält aber keine neuen Funktionen mehr.Auch die Zusatzsoftware Geforce Experience ist betroffen. Das Programmpaket mit Optimierungslösungen und Streamingfunktion wird künftig nur noch in der 64-Bit-Variante weiterentwickelt.


Wie "heise online" berichtet, sind von dem Schritt vor allem Grafikkarten mit Nvidias Fermi-Architektur betroffen. Abgesehen von kritischen Sicherheitsupdates, die noch bis Januar 2019 geliefert werden sollen, sind die Chips damit am Ende ihrer Unterstützung angelangt. Insgesamt handelt es sich um 72 Desktop- und Mobilgrafikkarten beginnend bei der Geforce 410M bis hin zur Geforce GT 820M und GTX 675M. Nvidia hat eine vollständige Liste mit allen betroffenen Grafikkarten veröffentlicht.


Neue "Game Ready"-Treiber für besonders nachgefragte Spiele, Leistungsverbesserungen und neue Funktionen soll es künftig nur noch für die moderneren Chip-Generationen Kepler, Maxwell und Pascal geben.

Gaming-Tastaturen bieten knackige Druckpunkte und sind etwas lauter als andere Tastaturen.


Vorteilhaft können zusätzliche Funktions-, Lautstärke- sowie frei programmierbare Tasten sein. Letztere lassen sich meist beliebig mit Tastenkürzeln oder Tastenkombinationen belegen und können so einen Geschwindigkeitsvorteil im Spiel bringen. Tastaturen sind in sämtlichen Preisklassen erhältlich: Von der Billigware für ein paar Euro bis hin zu sündhaft teuren Modellen aus Edelstahl oder Echtholz sowie mit Features wie einzelnen kleinen OLED-Displays auf jeder Taste zur freien Gestaltung des Erscheinungsbildes der Tastatur.

Einmal abgesehen von einer etwaigen Luxus-Ausführung des Gehäuse-Materials empfiehlt Beineke, ruhig etwas mehr für die Tastatur auszugeben, besonders dann, wenn sie als tägliches Arbeitsinstrument dient. Nach dem Support-Aus für Windows XP ist jetzt Windows 7 an der Reihe. Am 14. Januar 2020 wird Microsoft keine weiteren Updates mehr für das fast zehn Jahre alte Betriebssystem bereitstellen. Die weitere Nutzung wird danach zum Risiko, da Sicherheitslücken und Fehler nicht mehr behoben werden. Eine Ausnahme macht der Konzern für Unternehmen, die ab 2020 für den Support bezahlen müssen, wenn sie weiterhin bei Windows 7 bleiben wollen.


Microsoft hatte das Support-Ende für Windows 7 bereits 2014 angekündigt und Nutzer regelmäßig daran erinnert. Die Strategie des Software-Konzerns ist klar: Microsoft will den Marktanteil von Windows 10 steigern. Tatsächlich hat das neue Betriebssystem im Dezember 2018 erstmals seinen Vorgänger überholt und sich an die Spitze der meist genutzten Betriebssysteme gesetzt. Das liegt vermutlich daran, dass zu Weihnachten neue Notebooks und PCs verschenkt wurden, auf denen Windows 10 vorinstalliert ist.


Doch was bedeutet das Support-Aus für Nutzer eines älteren Rechners? Weltweit läuft Windows 7 immerhin auf rund 37 Prozent der Windows-Computer. In Deutschland betrifft es knapp 30 Prozent aller PCs. Für diese Nutzer ist jetzt vielleicht die Zeit für ein Upgrade gekommen – oder für ein neues Gerät. Beides ist natürlich mit Kosten verbunden.


Normalerweise kostet Windows 10 für zu Hause 145 Euro. Die Professional-Version ist teurer (259 Euro). Im ersten Jahr hatte Microsoft das Upgrade für Windows 7- oder Windows 8-Nutzer noch kostenlos angeboten. Doch diese Schonfrist ist längst verstrichen.

Hinweise auf Fuchsia gibt es bereits seit einiger Zeit, Google bezeichnet die Arbeit daran als Experiment. Der Bloomberg-Bericht beschreibt zum ersten Mal Pläne für einen breiten Einsatz in diversen Gerätekategorien. Zuvor hatte es Gerüchte gegeben, Android und Chrome OS könnten verschmolzen werden, was Google wiederholt dementierte.


Microsoft ändert seine Update-Politik für Windows 10. Dank schlanker Express Updates sollen Nutzer spätestens ab 2019 weniger Zeit mit Download und Installation der Dateien verbringen müssen.


Regelmäßige Windows-Updates sind zwar wichtig, um den PC vor Viren, Hackerangriffen und technischen Problemen zu schützen. Gleichzeitig sind sie ziemlich unbeliebt. Denn während des Prozesses bleibt dem Nutzer nichts anderes übrig, als zu warten, bis die Datenpakete heruntergeladen und installiert sind.


Jetzt hat Microsoft reagiert und in einem Blog-Beitrag schlankere und schnellere Updates für Windows 10 angekündigt. Diese sogenannten "Express-Updates" müssen aber deutlich häufiger ausgeführt werden. Die Änderungen zielen vor allem auf Unternehmen und Systemadministratoren ab, die mehrere Geräte verwalten müssen.


Wie funktionieren Updates unter Windows 10?

Bisher werden alle Windows-Updates kumulativ ausgeführt. Die Idee hinter diesen Sammel-Updates: Wer seinen Computer aktualisiert, bekommt automatisch auch alle vorherigen Updates mitgeliefert, die er womöglich verpasst hat. Dabei kommt allerdings mit der Zeit ein ganzer Batzen zusammen.


Das erste kumulative Update nach der Veröffentlichung eines größeren Funktions-Update, wie es das zuletzt Ende April gegeben hat, ist etwa 100 bis 200 Megabyte groß, rechnet Microsoft vor. Weil die Dateien aber mit jeder weiteren Aktualisierung um weitere Komponenten und Funktionen anwachsen, sind nach sechs bis acht Monaten häufig schon Dateigrößen von 1 oder 1,2 Gigabyte erreicht. Wenn sich die Download-Dateien auch noch durch eine langsame Leitung quetschen müssen, braucht man Geduld.



Jetzt nimmt Microsoft Änderungen an dem bisherigen Update-Modell vor. So sollen datenintensiven Delta-Updates ab dem 12. Februar 2019 von schnelleren Express-Updates abgelöst werden. Zur Erklärung: Microsoft unterscheidet zwischen drei verschiedenen Update-Typen:


Vollständige Updates umfassen alle Komponenten und Dateien, die sich seit dem Release der aktuellen Windows 10-Version verändert haben. Solche Updates können, wie oben beschrieben, schnell auf über 1 Gigabyte anwachsen.

Delta-Updates enthalten nur die Komponenten, die seit dem letzten Update aktualisiert wurden. Jedes Delta-Update baut auf das vorherige auf. Man muss also alle nacheinander installieren und kann keines überspringen. Die Dateigröße beträgt zwischen 300 und 500 Megabyte.

Express Updates installieren nur die neuesten Änderungen. Statt also wie beim Delta-Update die gesamte Windows-Komponente zu aktualisieren, werden nur einzelne Dateien ausgetauscht und auf den neuesten Stand gebracht. Der Download- und Installationsprozess dürfte deutlich schneller gehen, da er nur 150 bis 200 Megabyte misst.

Diese Express Updates gibt es schon seit 2017. Sie sollen aber bis 2019 zum neuen Standard werden. Dabei gilt dann: Je häufiger der Nutzer sein System aktualisiert, desto geringer ist die Größe der Download-Datei. Wer es hingegen versäumt, sein System regelmäßig auf Updates zu überprüfen, sitzt am Ende doch wieder länger vor dem PC und schaut beim Installieren zu.


Wer einen neuen Rechner kauft, findet darauf in der Regel ein vorinstalliertes Windows 10. Das jüngste Microsoft-Betriebssystem will auch Einsteigern die Nutzung einfach machen. It’s hard to not sound like complete sycophants when talking about how much we love the XPS 13. It’s been our favorite laptop for the past five years, and the late-2019 version only makes it better. Dell had already accomplished what we’ve been begging it to do for years and moved the webcam back up to the top of the screen where it belongs. That alone made this better than its predecessor for anyone who plans to video call or web conference regularly. Now, Dell has updated to Intel’s 10th-gen Comet Lake CPUs, including a six-core Core i7 that makes this the fastest 13-inch laptop money can buy.


As with the XPS 13s that came before, this version is light, portable, and exceedingly attractive. It’s gradually moved away from the MacBook silver styling which is so common in the notebook market and has forged an identity all of its own. You’ll want to keep the white interior and “Frost” exterior clean to make sure it stays looking fresh, but we feel confident that you’ll love this laptop enough to make the effort.


The display is absolutely gorgeous no matter which resolution you opt for and internal hardware upgrades make sure that this laptop is capable of just about anything you throw at it, from everyday web browsing to more intensive tasks like photo editing. Don’t expect to play the latest and greatest games at high framerates, but that’s not really what this laptop is for.


Always the bridesmaid and rarely the bride, the Asus ZenBook 13 UX333 is so close to being our favorite 13-inch laptop ever made. If it didn’t exist in a world with the XPS 13, it just might take the top spot. As it is, it’s relegated to a very near second place, and that’s nothing to sneeze at.

The ZenBook 13 is certainly the more affordable of the two devices. For that lower price, you get almost as much hardware as the more expensive Dell machine. Specifically, well under $1,000 gets you an Intel Core i5 CPU with four cores, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. That’s more than enough to perform any day to day task. Though the XPS 13 starts at $900, the one you’ll want (with 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD) starts at $1,200.



The ZenBook has it all. Its battery life is one of the best at this size, stretching well past a full workday, and it’s slim and lightweight enough to be competitive with the most portable notebooks in this space. It even has a good screen and a distinctive design that helps it stand out from the crowd of silver MacBook copycats.


Yes, yes — we know. The Razer Blade Stealth isn’t supposed to really be a gaming laptop. All of that changed with the latest version, however, which incorporated Intel’s 10th-gen Ice Lake CPUs that are faster and offer better entry-level graphics thanks to Intel’s latest iteration of its Iris Plus graphics. Even better, Razer somehow stuffed a real GPU, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650, inside this diminutive chassis, making the Blade Stealth the best gaming laptop in its class.


What’s most encouraging with the 2019 Razer Blade Stealth is that it betters its predecessor so well. The upgraded hardware gives it a serious leg up on the Stealth that came before and it takes the lead against many other laptops sporting the same graphics chip. While there are certainly more powerful gaming laptops out there, it’s rare to find one at 13-inches that doesn’t have a terrible screen or awful battery life.


The Razer Blade Stealth is a beautiful laptop, and it has enough grunt to play all modern games at reasonable frame rates, as long as you keep the graphical detail under control. Larger Razer laptops do outshine its gaming ability, and other laptops on this list will stomp all over its battery life, but for a laptop that performs well in and out of games and looks good doing it, this is our favorite in the 13-inch space.



Finding a decent laptop under $500 isn’t easy. Especially if you’re looking in the Windows world. When you slip under the $500 mark, you tend to run into big no-nos like outdated dual-core processors and mechanical hard drives. Those are the kind of components that make a laptop feel really slow, especially with a heavier operating system like Windows 10.


The Acer Chromebook R13 might not look like anything special on the outside, but it has all its bases covered. The second you open it up, performance will feel snappy and quick, even though it only has a slower MediaTek processor and 4GB of RAM. Google has been working to stabilize the tablet mode as well, making things like Android apps and touch functionality a bit more useful. Unlike older cheap Chromebooks, the Acer Chromebook R13


This is a laptop that no doubt has limitations — the greatest of which is Chrome OS itself. However, for those who just want to write Google Docs, listen to Spotify, and browse the web, the Acer Chromebook R13 will work well.

Google steht mal wieder für seine undurchsichtigen und nicht gerade datenschutzfreundlichen Funktionen in der Kritik. Stein des Anstoßes ist eine neue Anmelde-Mechanik im überarbeiteten Chrome Browser. Seit Version 69 verknüpft sich der Browser nämlich automatisch mit dem Nutzerkonto, sobald sich der Anwender bei einem Google-Dienst anmeldet.


Bisher waren die Browser-Funktionen nicht automatisch an das Nutzerkonto gekoppelt. Die Anmeldung im Browser war optional und musste extra erfolgen. Indem Google nun beide Logins zusammenlegt, entfällt dieser Schritt. Der Nutzer ist gleichzeitig im Google-Konto und dem Browser an- oder abgemeldet. Ist er abgemeldet, pausiert auch die Browser-Synchronisierung.


Allerdings hatte es Google versäumt, diese "Verbesserung" ausdrücklich zu bewerben. Viele Nutzer fühlen sich jetzt hintergangen. Schließlich verzichten viele aus Datenschutzgründen ganz bewusst auf bestimmte Komfort-Funktionen des Chrome Browsers, bei denen eingegebene Daten wie zum Beispiel Suchverläufe, Passwörter und Lesezeichen automatisch synchronisiert werden und dann auch auf anderen Geräten zur Verfügung stehen.


Aber auch in Version 69 von Chrome ist niemand gezwungen, den Browser-Datenabgleich zuzulassen. Der Nutzer muss der Synchronisation mit anderen Google-Diensten erst zustimmen.


Wer sich in sein Gmail- oder ein anderes Google Konto einloggen möchte, ohne gleichzeitig im Browser angemeldet zu werden, kann zum Beispiel den Gast- oder den Inkognito-Modus in Chrome nutzen. Alle im Gastmodus aufgerufenen Seiten erscheinen nicht im Browserverlauf. Es werden auch keine Cookies gespeichert. Nachdem man alle Fenster geschlossen hat, bleiben also keine Spuren zurück.



IBM-Manager Lord will Arbeitnehmern die Sorge nehmen, durch künstliche Intelligenz ihren Job zu verlieren. Am Ende stünde immer noch der Mensch, der die wichtigen Entscheidungen trifft, sagt er.


Computer und Roboter werden nach Einschätzung des obersten IBM-Digitalstrategen auf lange Sicht nicht die Kontrolle übernehmen. "Computer werden keine autonomen Entscheidungen treffen", sagte IBM-Manager Bob Lord im Gespräch mit der Deutschen Presse-Agentur.


"Mit Blick auf Künstliche Intelligenz sind wir weit von dem entfernt, was wir in Hollywood vorgespielt bekommen", so Lord, der als Chief Digital Officer für die Digitalstrategie des IT-Konzerns zuständig ist.


Studien gehen längst davon aus, dass die Angst, Computer und Roboter würden Millionen von Jobs kosten, unbegründet ist. Eine Studie des Weltwirtschaftsforums (WEF) kam jüngst zu dem Schluss, dass zwar Jobs verschwinden, die Roboter-Revolution netto 58 Millionen aber neue Arbeitsplätze in den kommenden fünf Jahren schaffen wird.


"Ich verstehe die Angst, dass künstliche Intelligenz Jobs kostet", sagte Lord. "Aber wer sich mit der Technologie KI auseinandersetzt, der wird sie beherrschen, nicht umgekehrt." In Personalabteilungen beispielsweise müssten künftig die Mitarbeiter keine Stapel von Bewerbungen mehr sichten. "Das macht die Software", so Lord. "Aber die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter entscheiden, wer eingestellt wird." Das gleiche gelte für Ärzte: Die Software gehe für sie durch Studien, aber sie fällten am Ende die Entscheidung.



"Die Jobs verändern sich durch Algorithmen oder künstliche Intelligenz, aber sie gehen nicht verloren", so Lord. Im Englischen wird üblicherweise zwischen "Blue Collar Jobs" (wörtlich "Blaukragenjobs") in der Produktion – in Anlehnung an die Blaumänner von Arbeitern – und "White Collar Jobs" (wörtlich "Weißkragenjobs") in der Verwaltung unterschieden. Bei IBM spricht man deshalb inzwischen von den "New Collar Jobs" ("Neukragenjobs"). "Dabei geht es darum, den Menschen Grundzüge der Informatik beizubringen, damit sie befähigt werden, künftig damit umzugehen", so Lord. "Wir wollen bei IBM auch Ungelernte an Software heranführen, denn das ist auch eine Möglichkeit, Arbeitslosigkeit zu vermeiden."

We also saw excellent performance out of its 2.4-GHz Intel Core i9-9980HK processor, 64GB of RAM, 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 GPU. Performance alone makes this one of the best Asus laptops.


The Asus ProArt StudioBook Pro W700G3T is an absolute stunner, from its elegant design to its vivid 17-inch, 16:10 display. The StudioBook Pro's panel hit 162% of the sRGB color gamut and emitted 292 nits of brightness.


In terms of performance, its Nvidia Quadro RTX 3000 GPU blasted through the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited benchmark with a score of 186,292, sailing past the workstation average (178,833). It also has a comfortable keyboard paired with decent battery life.

Do you need vPro? Many business laptops are available with CPUs that have Intel vPro technology, which lets a support person log in remotely, even if the computer can't boot. However, unless you have a large IT department and a huge fleet of laptops that you need the ability to service remotely, you probably won't use this feature.

How fast do you need it to be? Most business users will be happy with a laptop that has a dual-core, Core i5 CPU like the Core i5-7200U or Core i5-7300U (vPro) and the CPU's integrated graphics processor. However, if you require a high-end performance for 3D Modeling, professional video editing or creating predictive models, then get a mobile workstation with a quad-core Core i5 or Core i7 CPU (model numbers end in HQ) and Nvidia Quadro graphics.


Long battery life: Nobody wants to run out of juice in the middle of a long workday or a cross-country flight. Unless you're getting a giant workstation, look for a laptop that gets more than 9 hours on a charge. Some business systems come with a choice of regular or extended batteries; always get the high-capacity unit.

At least a 1080p screen: It's hard to be productive if you can't see much text on the screen. Avoid laptops with low-resolution, 1366 x 768 screens like the plague. Get one with a resolution that's 1920 x 1080 or higher.



SSDs for responsiveness: If you want a truly fast computer, get a solid state drive rather than a mechanical hard drive. SSDs boot up, open programs and multitask at least three times faster than old-fashioned hard drives.

The right ports: Nobody likes to carry a bag full of dongles. Consider which kinds of connections you or your employees will need the most. If you connect to a wired network a lot, make sure the laptop has an Ethernet port. If photography is a key part of the job, choose a laptop with a memory card reader. No matter what your needs, a Thunderbolt 3 port is a huge plus, because it will allow you to connect to a new generation of high-speed peripherals, universal chargers and powerful docks.


A great keyboard: It almost goes without saying that every laptop should have a good keyboard. But with business systems, a comfortable typing experience is even more important. Look for snappy feedback, deep travel and absolutely no flex.

Apple vs. Microsoft. It's a feud as old as modern computing itself. Initially fought on the software front, the battle of these two giants is now a clash of metal against metal. Microsoft's newest weapon is the Surface Laptop 3, a traditional clamshell laptop with a superslim chassis. With a 13.5-inch screen, the Surface Laptop 3 makes for the perfect opponent against the MacBook Air, Apple's massively popular portable laptop.



On paper, the Surface Laptop 3 already has advantages over the MacBook Air. The Surface's U-series CPU should offer faster performance, and its USB Type-A port is still super useful. On the flip side, the MacBook Air weighs less and has a smaller chassis.

Dafür gehen Sie zunächst einmal ins BIOS. Dafür müssen Sie den Rechner neu starten. Direkt nach dem Neustart drücken Sie entweder F2, F8, F10, Entf oder Esc. Die richtige Taste variiert je nach Hersteller. Probieren Sie also entweder alle Tasten durch oder suchen Sie im Internet nach der BIOS-Taste Ihres PC-Herstellers. Im Boot-Bereich gehen Sie auf "Boot" und danach auf "Boot Device Priority". Auf Deutsch könnte das so etwas wie "Boot-Reihenfolge anpassen" heißen. Dort sehen Sie die Hardware, die zuerst gebootet wird, an erster Stelle. Verschieben Sie in diesem Fall mit den Pfeiltasten Ihre Windows-Festplatte nach oben. Anschließend verlassen Sie das BIOS und speichern dabei Ihre Änderungen.


Windows-Start analysieren

Sie können sich über die Windows-Ereignisanzeige in den Startvorgang Einblicke geben lassen. Geben Sie dafür in der Suchmaske im Startbereich "Ereignisanzeige" ein. Dort klicken Sie sich über die Ordner "Anwendungs- und Dienstprotokolle", "Microsoft" und "Windows" zur "Diagnostics-Performance" durch, wo Sie anschließend "öffnen" anklicken. Dort suchen Sie die Ereignis-ID 100. Scrollen Sie zu "Startdauer" herunter, Sie bekommen üblicherweise in Millisekunden die Länge des Startvorgangs angezeigt.


Apps deinstallieren

Ein vollgemüllter PC ist eine typische Ursache für Startschwierigkeiten. Programme, die man nicht mehr braucht, zu entfernen, hilft daher immer. Suchen Sie in Ihrer Suchmaske nach "Apps & Features", dann finden Sie eine Liste all Ihrer installierten Programme. Klicken Sie eine App an und gehen Sie auf "deinstallieren", um sie zu entfernen. Das funktioniert allerdings nur mit Programmen, die nicht von Windows vorinstalliert sind.


Auf jeden Fall sollten Sie auf Ihrem PC den Schnellstart aktivieren, wenn dieser noch nicht aktiviert ist. Dafür gehen Sie in Ihre Systemsteuerung. Dort gehen Sie auf "Hardware und Sound" und anschließend auf "Energieoptionen". Dort finden Sie den Unterpunkt "Netzschalterverhalten ändern". Im anschließenden Fenster prüfen Sie, ob "Schnellstart aktiviert" markiert ist.



Sie können das Ärgernis eines langsamen Starts aber auch einfach vermeiden, indem Sie den Rechner gar nicht erst komplett herunterfahren und stattdessen in den Energiesparmodus oder den Ruhezustand schalten. Aus diesem Modi erwacht Ihr Gerät schnell, und Sie können Ihre Arbeit genau wieder da aufnehmen, wo Sie aufgehört haben.


Gerüchten zufolge soll Microsoft an einem neuen Startmenü für Windows 10 arbeiten. Jetzt hat der Konzern versehentlich eine Windows-Version veröffentlicht, die ein überarbeitetes Menü zeigt.Microsoft hat versehentlich eine interne Version von Windows 10 an alle Tester von Vorabversionen verteilt. Und in dieser Version zeigt das System ein neues Startmenü für das Betriebssystem. Das berichten verschiedene Medien.


Bei der verteilten Version handelt es sich um den Windows 10 Build 18947. Wie das Technikmagazin "The Verge" berichtet, ist die Version für die interne Entwicklung der Microsoft-Spielekonsole Xbox gedacht.


Gerüchten zufolge soll Microsoft seit Längerem an einem neuen Startmenü arbeiten. Das neue Menü in der veröffentlichten Version scheint dabei kein Kachelsystem zu nutzen, wie es bisher bei Windows 10 üblich gewesen ist. Das Kachelmenü wurde mit Windows 8 eingeführt.

Microsoft hat für Nutzer des Windows-10-Oktober-Updates (Version 1809) ein Update ausgeliefert, das eine Vielzahl an Fehlern behebt. Das berichtet "Chip.de".


Microsoft führt die Aktualisierung unter dem Namen KB4497934. Das Update löst beispielsweise einen Fehler, der den Internet Explorer zum Absturz bringt. Auch ein Problem mit der Windows-Suche wurde behoben: Dabei wurden neu installierte Anwendungen in der Suche nicht angezeigt.

Alle Cookies grundsätzlich abzulehnen, ist nicht empfehlenswert. Das würde etwa die Warenkorbfunktion beim Online-Shopping ausschalten, so die Experten. Gerade wenn es um das Übertragen sensibler Daten wie der Kreditkartennummer oder der Wohnadresse geht, sollten sich Nutzer über den Umgang des Website-Anbieters mit Cookies schlaumachen, rät das Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik. Seriöse Anbieter sollten dazu Info-Material auf ihren Seiten anbieten.


Fotos, Videos und Spiele: Die Anforderungen an Computermonitore wachsen. Doch auch für den Bürogebrauch gibt es preisgünstige Geräte. Worauf Käufer bei einer Neuanschaffung achten sollten. Wer sich einen neuen Computermonitor kaufen möchte, kann unter anderem zwischen drei Arten wählen: LCD, QLED und OLED. Welcher Monitortyp der Beste sei, hänge vor allem vom eigenen Nutzerverhalten ab, erklärt Tüv Süd-Experte Florian Hockel.


Doch auch der Preis könne stark variieren. Die derzeit gebräuchlichsten und günstigsten Monitore seien LCD-Monitore mit einer schnellen Reaktionszeit bei kleinerem Farbspektrum – Voraussetzung für ein ruckelfreies Bild. "Dies ist auch bei gemischter und gelegentlicher Nutzung wichtig, um etwa einen YouTube- oder Nachrichtenbeitrag anzusehen, bei welchem es nicht vordringlich um eine hervorragende Bildqualität geht", erklärt Hockel.


Ein kleineres Farbspektrum ist demnach für Büroanwendungen und eine gemischte Nutzung ausreichend. Das kann die hobbymäßige Foto- oder Videobearbeitung sein, oder wenn man gelegentlich Filme schaut. Hier eignen sich 24- und 27-Zoll-Monitore mit der gängigen Auflösung von 1.920 mal 1.080 oder 2.560 mal 1.440 Pixel.


Filmfans und Gamer können von teureren Monitoren profitieren

"QLED-Monitore liegen preislich, verglichen mit LCD-Monitoren, um 20 bis 50 Prozent höher, je nach Größe und Auflösung. Die Investition lohnt sich vor allem für Gamer, Filmfans, Bild- und Video-bearbeitende Berufe", so Hockel. Gerade diese würden auch von schnellen und großen Monitoren ab 48 Zoll aufwärts profitieren.

Seit Juli beobachten Sicherheitsexperten, wie sich die Malware "Nodersok" auf immer mehr Windows-Rechner schleicht. Dazu reicht ein unbedachter Klick im Browser. Microsoft zeigt sich beunruhigt und mahnt Nutzer zur Vorsicht.



Windows-Nutzer in den USA und Europa sollten derzeit beim Surfen besonders wachsam sein: Denn wie aus einer Sicherheitswarnung von Microsoft hervorgeht, treibt eine neue Malware ihr Unwesen, die sich unter anderem hinter manipulierten Werbebannern verbirgt.


"Nodersok" soll seit Juli aktiv sein und seither Tausende Computer angegriffen haben, schätzt Microsoft. Offenbar handelt es sich um eine Kampagne, möglicherweise mit dem Ziel, ein Botnetz zu errichten. Bereits infizierte Geräte dienen dabei als Proxy, also als Stellvertreter, um die Schadsoftware weiterzuverbreiten.


So geht die Malware vor: mehrstufiger Angriff

In einer Grafik erklärt Microsoft, wie "Nodersok" funktioniert. Demnach kann sich der Nutzer die Malware beim Surfen im Browser einfangen, beispielsweise, indem er auf eine präparierte Werbeanzeige klickt oder auf anderem Wege eine manipulierte Datei im Browser herunterlädt und öffnet.


Daraufhin wird ein JavaScript ausgeführt, das weiteren Schadcode nachlädt. Dieser versucht, die Windows-Schutzmechanismen zu durchbrechen, Befehle auszuführen und das System unter seine Kontrolle zu bringen. Dazu befällt die Schadsoftware bereits in Windows enthaltene Programme und missbraucht sie für ihre Zwecke.



Das macht "Nodersok" zu einem Meister der Tarnung. Da sich die Malware im Node.js-Framework oder dem Open-Source-Werkzeug Windivert versteckt, wird sie von den Windows-Warnsystemen nur schwer erkannt.
Laut Microsoft ist der Windows Defender unter Windows 10 jedoch in der Lage, die Schadsoftware zu stoppen, bevor sie sich im System einnisten kann. Dazu muss der Virenschutz allerdings aktiviert sein. Ob das der Fall ist, überprüfen Sie am besten in den Systemeinstellungen. Mehr dazu hier.

From there, we're expecting to see mid- to upper-tier laptops sporting either a Ryzen CPU or a Radeon GPU. And while we're excited at the potential of getting AMD processors in laptops, we're more hopeful about the graphics cards. It'd be nice to have an option besides Intel and Nvidia again. If you thought Intel was done rolling out all the 10th Gen goodies, you're definitely mistaken. The company is still working on introducing its Project Athena initiative. And that means more laptops.


Business laptops that have Intel's vPro technology such as the HP Elite Dragonfly are forced to use 8th Gen chips because 10th Gen doesn't support the technology...yet. We're also waiting to see the arrival of 10th Gen H-series processors for gaming laptops. In preparation for the Xbox Series X, 343 Industries is developing a shiny new game engine called Slipspace that's going to power Halo: Infinite. The engine will likely test the power of gaming laptops as the new Halo title is confirmed to arrive on PC.


343 Industries recently published a video on YouTube detailing some of the development of Halo: Infinite, and Halo franchise director Frank O'Connor talked about what Slipspace means for the future of Halo."We had to create an engine that was more powerful for next-generation development, but also more nimble, so the creatives and engineers are able to work more easily and iterate faster," O'Connor said in the video. "This technical groundwork is vital to build a platform for the future of Halo."


The visuals in the teaser trailer for Halo: Infinite were stunning. But if we think back to Gears 5, that game got a massive visual upgrade from Xbox to PC, so we're expecting to see the same from Halo: Infinite. That is, if gaming laptops can keep up with next-generation console hardware.


"You have to make tools that allow you to make new features that maybe weren't thought about," said David Berger, engineering director at 343 Industries. "You've gotta give the content-creators room to ideate outside of that."We're excited to see what 343 Industries has to offer that will differentiate Halo: Infinite from the rest of the franchise, and how Infinite will differ between Xbox and PC. And it seems that 343 Industries might be close to showing off another reveal, as Halo Community Director Brian Jarrard tweeted about playtesting in his office.



While we won't get the big picture until Halo: Infinite launches later this year, there will be beta tests before that happens. Unfortunately, Xbox will get the first taste, but PC will come later, so we'll eventually get to compare and contrast both versions. The Tecra X50 will start at $1,544 and include a generous three-year warranty. We've asked Dynabook about the Tecra X50's availability in the U.S and will update this article once we hear back.


To get you caught up, Sharp rebranded Toshiba to Dynabook after purchasing 80.1% of Toshiba Client Solutions (Toshiba's PC unit) last year. Instead of throwing in the towel, the new brand went right back to creating new laptops, like the Portégé A30, Portégé X30 and Tecra X40 unveiled back in July. Toshiba laptops may not have had the best reputation, but the Dynabook Tecra X50 seems to have a lot going for it.


That starts with the chassis, which is made from magnesium alloy, a material that is increasingly being used as a lightweight yet durable alternative to aluminum. The Tecra X50 exemplifies those benefits with a body that weighs just 3.1 pounds but is MIL-STD-810G tested, which means it can withstand exposure to extreme conditions. We haven't gotten our hands on a Tecra X50 yet, but we're excited to test those durability claims and see the laptop's Onyx Blue color in person.


Unfortunately, the Tecra X50 is powered by Intel 8th Gen CPUs (up to a Core i7-8665U), at a time when laptop makers are hurrying to release products with Intel's new 10th Gen processors. That already puts the Tecra X50 behind competitors when it comes to performance, though the Dynabook will at least support Wi-Fi 6. Other components inside the Tecra X50 include integrated UHD 620 graphics, up to 32GB of RAM and up to a 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.



The Tecra X50 comes with plenty of features for business users, including a TPM 2.0 security chip, an optional smart card reader, an IR camera for facial authentication and a fingerprint reader embedded in the touchpad. There's also a webcam cover so you can save on tape.


At 0.7 inches thick, there isn't a ton of space on the Tecra X50 for ports, but we've seen worse. Housed on the laptop's thin chassis are two Thunderbolt 3 inputs, a USB 3.0 port, an HDMI, a microSD card slot and a headphone jack. We're bummed that the Tecra X50 runs on last-gen processors, but everything else about the notebook --- the lightweight yet durable chassis, long (estimated) runtime and power-efficient display --- has us excited to get one in for review.

Greenpeace und iFixit verweisen darauf, dass andere Hersteller zeigen, dass es sehr wohl anders geht: Dell, HP und Fairphone seien nämlich in Sachen Reparierbarkeit vorbildlich. Unterm Strich hilft den meisten das aber sowieso nicht, weswegen wir auch hier wieder empfehlen, das Laptop in die Hände eines fähigen Fachmanns zu geben. Falls sich das wegen des Geräte-Alters sowieso nicht lohnt, aber sich auf der Festplatte noch wichtige Daten befinden, könnt ihr sie ausbauen und mit einem Festplatten-Dock eine „externe Festplatte“ daraus machen. Solche Geräte kosten bei Amazon um die 30 Euro*. Ihr steckt einfach die ausgebaute Festplatte hinein, verbindet den Festplatten-Dock mittels USB-Kabel mit einem anderen Computer und könnt anschließend all eure Daten wie auf einer externen Festplatte erreichen. Das löst auch das Problem, eure Daten sicher zu löschen, bevor ihr das defekte Laptop entsorgt.


Mein erstes Betriebssystem war Windows 3.1. Danach kam Windows 98, ME, XP und 7. Vista, Windows 8 oder Windows 10 sind nicht meine Betriebssysteme. Mittlerweile bin ich bei Linux Mint Cinnamon gelandet. Wie sehen eure Erfahrungen aus? Schreibt sie uns gerne in die Kommentare.

Wenn der Laptop beziehungsweise das Notebook nicht mehr hochfährt und nur noch einen schwarzen Bildschirm angzeigt, muss das noch nicht das Todesurteil für den transportablen Rechner bedeuten. Wir stellen euch in diesem Ratgeber einige mögliche Probleme und deren Lösungen vor.



Leider sind die Möglichkeiten zur Selbstreparatur bei Laptops stark eingeschränkt, wenn ihr nicht gerade vom Fach oder ein guter Hobby-Elektroniker seid. Zuallererst: Überprüfen, ob der Laptop doch hochfährt

Bevor ihr überprüft, warum euer Laptop nicht mehr startet, solltet ihr zuallererst sichergehen, dass er auch wirklich nicht mehr hochfährt. Möglicherweise ist nur das Display falsch eingestellt oder defekt – das Notebook fährt also trotzdem hoch, ihr seht es nur nicht.

In diesem Fall solltet ihr den Laptop versuchen zu starten und die Kontrollleuchten im Auge behalten sowie horchen, ob die Lüfter sich drehen. Wenn das der Fall ist, schaut euch folgendes Video einmal an:


Wenn der Laptop den Dienst einstellt, hantieren viele gleich am Gerät selbst herum, dabei sollte man zu allererst das Netzeil überprüfen. Da nur die wenigsten ihren Laptop stationär benutzen, ist das Gerät natürlich ständig in Bewegung und oft wird auch das Ladegerät mitgeschleppt. Natürlich ist dieses auch nicht vor einem Defekt, beispielsweise einem Kabelbruch, gefeit.



Bevor ihr euch also den Laptop genauer anschaut, solltet ihr überprüfen, ob das Netzteil überhaupt noch funktioniert. Denn wenn der Akku des Laptops alle ist und das Netzteil nicht mehr für den nötigen Strom sorgt, bleibt folglich auch der Computer aus. So überprüft ihr euer Laptop-Ladegeät:

Sollte die LED nicht leuchten, ist das Netzteil mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit defekt.

However, numerous online complaints say otherwise. A Google search reveals dozens of forum and Reddit posts from frustrated users asking about how to fix the Dell XPS 15's power management issues that arise when the laptop is asleep. In one Reddit post, an XPS 15 owner says their laptop's battery drains at 1.5% to 2% per hour, and claimed that a Dell representative said the rate was acceptable. The problems also apply to the Precision 15 5530, not just the XPS 15.


Many users are pleading with Dell to revert back to the S3 power mode as Lenovo did with the X1 Carbon following customer complaints. However, Dell has been accused of being dismissive of these issues, particularly by Notebookcheck, a tech review site that blamed Dell of being "intransigence" and diverting accountability onto users.


Dell appears to be aware of these complaints, and listed ways in which to improve battery life for those who "have a concern about battery capacity or the power consumption issue." Those suggestions include updating the latest drivers and disabling Wake on Wireless LAN, among other things.


However, if you want to squeeze out as much gaming as you possibly can, what are the consequences of putting your laptop in a battery-saving mode? One Tom's Guide forum user asked us to help them out.To test this, we took MSI's GT63 Titan 8RG (Core i7-8750H, 32GB of RAM, GTX 1080) and ran three gaming benchmarks on battery settings such as Best Performance (plugged and unplugged), Windows 10 Battery Saver, Nvidia's Battery Boost and MSI's Eco Mode.


Running Rise of the Tomb Raider on Very High 1080p settings yielded some interesting results. The Titan averaged 68 frames per second when it was plugged in, compared with about 40 fps when it was unplugged. We then ran separate tests for the Windows 10 Battery Saver and GeForce Battery Boost, and both averaged 19 fps. Meanwhile, the Dragon Center’s Eco Mode pulled a mere 15 fps.



The Titan ripped apart the Hitman benchmark (Ultra, 1080p) while plugged in, at 120 fps, but severely downgraded to 38 fps when we unplugged it. Battery Saver didn't affect the performance much from there, as the benchmark hit 37 fps. However, Eco Mode and Battery Boost were playing with fire, at 30 fps.On the Grand Theft Auto V benchmark (Very High, 1080p), the Titan nailed 85 fps while plugged in. What was interesting was that both the unplugged Best Performance settings and Battery Boost hit 16 fps. On top of that, Eco Mode actually did better by one measly frame, for 17 fps. However, the Battery Saver mode sunk hard to 7 fps.


A lot. And ultimately, the numbers we got when the machine was unplugged were unreliable as well. If you're playing with a gaming laptop, there's no guarantee it'll meet 30 fps to be playable, whether you're on the best performance settings or using a battery-saving app. Generally, laptops with powerful GPUs like the Titan are best used with a direct power source to be fully functional. Moral of the story: Leave that sucker plugged in at all times.


Microsoft's Surface lineup is getting crowded, but the 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 3 (starting at $799, reviewed at $1,299) remains an excellent option for anyone who wants a high-performing portable system that doesn't flip, twist or detach.



The few changes made to this latest model are enough to elevate it above the previous versions. First, the clamshell device was updated with 10th Gen Intel CPUs, which provide faster computing and graphics performance. The Surface Laptop 3 also comes in an all-metal chassis with fresh color options (similar to what the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 offers), and the new USB-C port is a feature we've long awaited.


We're still hoping for a Thunderbolt 3 port and thinner display bezels, and Microsoft's egregious pricing structure puts the Surface Laptop 3's value into question. Still, the 13.5-inch clamshell is one of the best laptops for students, business users or anyone who wants a sleek, premium system.
