The ThinkPad X1 Yoga is a durable convertible that packs a 477-nit 2K panel into its 0.7-inch thick design. A privacy shutter and fingerprint reader round-out its security features, while its fast 8th-gen Intel Core i7 CPU helps you get the job(s) done. This 2-in-1 also surprises with its array of input/output options: 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports, 2 USB 3.0 ports and a mini-Ethernet jack.

The 6th Generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon is one of the best business laptops we've ever seen. Its slim, 0.6-inch carbon-fiber chassis protects its 469-nit HDR screen that produces a whopping 199% of the sRGB color gamut. The Thinkpad's excellent keyboard, one of the best we've ever tested, makes typing long projects a breeze, while its pointing stick is a bit of retro brilliance.

The original MateBook X Pro — not the model that's been delayed and hasn't hit the U.S. yet — is one bright laptop, with a 458-nit, 3000 x 2000-pixel display that is nearly all-screen. This achievement happened thanks to Huawei burying its webcam in a fake key in the deck. And with nearly 10 hours of battery life, you also get solid endurance.

Don't despair, Apple users – you're not completely shut out of this top 10 list. We saw a maximum brightness of 441 nits when testing the 13-inch panel in this fast, long-lasting MacBook Pro. While its butterfly-style key switches are a bit controversial, its strong speakers and tried-and-true design are indisputably great. We know: Nobody wants to buy a laptop with someone else's greasy fingerprints smothered all over it. However, if you're on a tight budget, buying a refurbished laptop is one of the best ways to cut costs.

When purchased from a reputable seller, a refurbished laptop can save you hundreds of dollars. Better yet, refurbished laptops feature warranties that can last from a few months to a full year.Below, we've identified the best refurbished laptop deals right now. When a laptop is designated an Ultrabook you can trust that it will be thin and lightweight yet offer long battery life. But as these ultraportable laptops grow in popularity, it becomes more difficult to choose the right one. Fortunately, we've done the hard work for you and ranked the best Ultrabooks on the market.

If you need a work machine, see our best business laptops rankings. Or if you're a student, we've put together a list of the best laptops for college. Upcoming Ultrabook devices are looking to make innovative changes to the category, like the Samsung Galaxy Book S. Other incoming Ultrabooks to keep on your radar include the redesigned Dell XPS 13 and Samsung's Galaxy Chromebook, both of which were announced at CES 2020.

The 4K model we tested has a gorgeous 13.3-inch InfinityEdge display -- with practically no bezels -- and now the 'nosecam' webcam is no longer, as Dell's engineers managed to fit it in the notebook's top bezel, which is still super-thin. If you want long battery life, opt for the 1080p model as the 4K version lasted just under 8 hours on a charge, a decent if below-average result.

Starting at $799, the new HP Envy 13t is our favorite sub-$1,000 thanks to its sleek, portable design, bright 4K and 1080p display options, and fast performance. New to the 2019 model is a webcam kill switch and fingerprint sensor for those who value security and privacy. And unlike its predecessor the latest Envy 13 has great speakers.

The 2019 MacBook Air is almost identical to last year's refreshed version, but that's not a bad thing. Returning are a gorgeous 13.3-inch Retina display (now with True Tone), powerful speakers and a slim, elegant chassis with narrow display bezels. The only major changes to its impressive predecessor are some tweaks to the Butterfly-style keyboard and, most importantly, a lower price (now starting at $1,099).

The Spectre x360 13 is the best 2-in-1 laptop ever. Updated with a 10th Gen CPU and a more modern design, the Spectre x360 13 is improved in almost every way over its excellent predecessor. Highlights of this laptop include a stunning design, a bright 1080p display, epic 13+ hour battery life and fast overall performance.

Sure, your laptop's screen is easy to read when you're working at night, but how does it handle the scourge of natural light? To make sure that your favorite YouTube videos don't look like drek on a dim screen, and that you can edit your documents in broad daylight, we performed thorough testing to see just how bright a laptop screen can get.Specifically, we used a light meter to measure the maximum brightness (in nits) from the four corners and center of each laptop screen. We then took the average of those five scores to find a laptop's brightness score.

While ruggedized laptops (which are made for service workers such as police or firefighters) are rated for up to 1,000 nits, we hope to see brightness scores of at least 400 nits on consumer systems. On occasion, we've seen screen scores in the 500's. And, on this list of brightest laptops, we've even got a 626-nit notebook, the Dell XPS 15.

Just skimming through our brightest laptops list, you'll see that Dell's got a solid track record, with three of the four top entries — all above 500 nits. Of course, the XPS 13, XPS 15 and Latitude 5290 2-in-1 models set the bar a lot higher than Dell's Inspiron models do, so don't expect all Dells to outshine the competition.

Slots 3 through 7 in this list of super-bright laptops are all 2-in-1 notebooks, such as the Long-Term Evolution (LTE)-capable HP Envy x2 and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga. Their ranking makes a lot of sense, as you can make a better case for a convertible (which can cost more) when you can use it in tablet mode as you walk around not worrying about how much sun is drenching your room, or any light sources around you.

Those looking for an Apple (or Apple-esque) laptop don't need to settle for a dim display, as the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the MateBook X Pro fill out the bottom of our top 10. Of course, we're hoping that the rumored 16-inch MacBook Pro pumps a lot of nits out of its larger screen.

If you're used to dim laptops, you might need to look into a pair of sunglasses before you trip the light fantastic on the amazingly bright 626-nit organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panel version of the Dell XPS 15. It's the sweetest cherry on top of an amazing system, which packs an overclockable Intel Core i9 processor and an Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU. Oh, and don't worry about the XPS' nosecam problem – it's fixed.

The 575-nit Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR is a sleek, aluminum beast of a gaming laptop, and its brilliantly bright 4K HDR screen won't blink if you open the shade behind your game station. Its gaming performance may not hit the high marks we wanted, but its comfortable keyboard and capable overall performance make it a well-rounded laptop. And at less than an inch thick and less than 6 pounds, it's aerodynamic enough to be portable.

The 516-nit score from the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 may not place it at the very top of this list, but it's still bright enough to annihilate your average laptop's output. Other perks of this convertible include nearly 11 hours of battery life, an elegant platinum silver-white design and an ultra-wide 16:10 aspect ratio. A speedy 10th Gen Intel Core i7 processor ties it all together for an excellent package.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835-powered HP Envy x2's bright 486-nit panel isn't the only reason that you'll want to take this laptop everywhere. The detachable's LTE connectivity means you're beholden to no Wi-Fi boundaries, and its 15-plus hours of battery life make it a perfect compatriot for your next road trip. The Envy's strong (Bang & Olufsen-branded) audio completes the cycle.

The dark-ash silver (think copper and gunmetal gray) is a beautiful laptop, and its 15-inch OLED screen only sweetens the pot. Strong overall performance (U-series quad-core and H-series hexa-core options) and a comfortable keyboard mean that its beauty is not shell-deep, either. Don't make the mistake of looking past the Spectre x360's unique, 45-degree back corners, as a Thunderbolt 3 port is tucked away on the far right corner.

The Global Next Generation Memory Market was valued at USD 3197.75 million in 2019, and is expected to reach a value of USD 12482.98 million by 2025, registering a CAGR of 29.7%, during the forecast period of (2020 – 2025). The emerging non-volatile memory technologies, such as MRAM, STT-RAM, FRAM, phase-change memory (PCM), and ReRAM combine the speed of SRAM, the density of DRAM, and the non-volatility of flash memory. Hence, these are the possible additions to the future memory technologies. Moreover, the adoption of next-generation infotainment systems and ADAS would be fusing the DRAM memory technologies that would have much higher performance and low power consumption capabilities.

– Demand for universal memory devices is driving the market. Most of the new memory technologies are aimed at becoming universal memories to replace one of the members of the hierarchy with better technology. The high-end laptops are using solid-state flash chips, instead of huge mechanical hard disks and using the cloud for backup rather than tape drives. Recently, Intel announced Optane, which uses 3D XPoint technology that is close to universal memory. This is primarily a flash drive with non-volatile memory fast enough to function as RAM.

– Increasing demand for enterprise storage applications? is driving the market. The end-user industries, such as BFSI, are investing heavily in IoT technologies and reaping big financial rewards. For instance, embedded MRAM is considered as a promising technology for applications, such as IoT. Also, the other next-generation memories, such as 3D Xpoint, offer 1,000 times faster transfer speeds than the current SSDs. Hence this will drive the market efficiently.

– Lack of stability under extreme environmental conditions is restraining the market. It is greatly impacted by extreme environmental conditions in terms of durability and reliability of memory devices. For instance, the more thermal stress a memory device is exposed to, the more of a risk there is of damaging it, which challenges a market to grow.

– With the growing size of enterprises, many of the companies in the IT sector have adopted the use of enterprise storage technologies. This adoption has been responsible for driving the demand for next-generation storage to handle the computing power of the organizations.

– While many client devices use solid-state storage technologies nowadays, hard disk drives (HDDs) are still used by hundreds of millions of people and across virtually all datacenters worldwide. Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology promises to increase capacities of HDDs significantly in the coming years.

– Though HDD media is still a top seller in the storage industry, the adoption of flash/SSD has been rising fast from the last several years. Owing to the fast data growth, significant media investments are being done highly in this sector. With the adoption of SSD memory storage technologies gradually rising, the need for cost-effective memory technologies is becoming intertwined with it.

– For instance, Fadu Technology is a startup focused on advancing flash storage technology. By deploying a new architecture for Solid State Drive (SSD) controllers, Fadu Technology ushers in a new era of SSD storage by meeting the demands placed on Enterprise and Hyperscale datacenters in Flash Memory Summit 2019.

– These latest memory devices also provide a better architecture, compared to the existing used technologies. Technologies, such as MRAM, are expected to have a better architecture that provides efficiency for the data centers, which will drive the market growth in Information technology segment.

– The North American region has been one of the early adopters of the next-generation technologies and infrastructure. The IT industry significantly drives the economy in the United States. The rapidly changing technologies and high data generation, across the industries, are creating a need for more efficient processing systems. These are some of the factors driving the demand for next-generation memory market in the region.

– Additionally, the US government has started the Data Center Optimization Initiative (DCOI) to deliver better services to the public while increasing return-on-investment to taxpayers, by consolidating many data centers in the country. The consolidation process includes the process for building hyperscale data centers and to shut-off the underperforming ones. Till date, the government has closed over 3,215 data centers in the country.

– Moreover, the memory manufacturing companies in North America are seeking opportunities for production expansions. For instance, Intel has already started the phases of its new fabrication plant in Arizona for manufacturing next-generation memory and storage solutions. For this project, the company spent USD 1 billion as the first phase of investment out of the total cost USD 7 billion.

– Additionally, in March 2019, Cyxtera Technologies expanded its data center facilities in Silicon Valley, Phoenix, Atlanta, New York Metro, and Toronto, with the expansions increasing the total capacity in these markets to more than 1.5 million sq. ft., with an overall company footprint of more than 2.9 million sq. ft.

Acer Aspire V5-471P Battery

In Hibernate mode, your notebook will save its memory to disk and completely power off, rather than just going to sleep. It will take nearly as long to wake from hibernation as it does to boot, but once it wakes, your session will be right where you left it.To make your computer hibernate on demand, simply click the arrow next to the Shutdown button and select Hibernate. If you do not see Hibernate available as an option, your computer does not support this mode.

If your computer supports hibernation, you may want to set it to hibernate every time you close the lid.

To set your notebook to hibernate upon lid close:Type Lid into the Start menu text field.

Click “Change what closing the lid does.”

Select Hibernate from the “When I close the lid” menu under On Battery.

Click Save Changes.

8. Disable Bluetooth.

If your notebook has Bluetooth, you’re probably not using it much. However, the radio is still sucking power, even when nothing is connected to it.

To disable Bluetooth:

Type Network Connections into the text field in the Start Menu.

Select View Network Connections.

Right-click on the Bluetooth Network Connection > Disable.

9. Turn off Wi-Fi when not in use.

If you’re connected to the Internet via Ethernet, or if you’re working some place that has no wireless signal, you can save a lot of power by turning off your notebook’s Wi-Fi radio. Most notebooks have a Function key on the top of the keyboard that toggles Wi-Fi on or off, though some have a dedicated button or switch.

10. Minimize hard drive usage.

If your notebook has a 5,400- or 7,200-rpm hard drive, it’s sucking up a lot of juice just spinning that magnetic platter around. There are several ways to save power by minimizing disk activity.

2. Prevent scheduled tasks from running on battery power.

Your virus scanner and disk defragmenter, along with auto updates from the likes of Apple and Google, are scheduled to run themselves on a regular basis—often without your knowledge or consent. Set these tasks to run only on AC power so they don’t eat up precious juice running your hard drive, CPU and wireless while you’re unplugged.

Select Administrative Tools > Task Scheduler in the Control Panel.

Select Task Scheduler (Local) in the left window pane.

Go through each active task that has a future date in the Next Run Time column and do the following:

Double-click the task.

Select the Conditions tab.

Toggle on the first two power options: “Start the task only if the computer is on AC power” and “Stop if the computer switches to battery power” if they are not already checked.

Click the back button to return to the list of active tasks.

3. Turn off backlit keyboards.

If your notebook has a backlit keyboard, it will certainly help you see keys in a dark room, but it’s also sucking juice out of your battery. You’ll save some power by turning off that light. Every notebook has its own way of enabling or disabling its keyboard backlight, but the method usually involves hitting a Function key on the top row of the keyboard.

4. Unplug all USB devices and remove all discs.

Every USB peripheral attached to your notebook is eating up power just by registering itself with the operating system. By the same token, CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays can drain battery life, even when they’re just sitting idle in your optical drive. Remove any discs along with USB keys, card readers, modems or other peripherals you don’t need while on battery power.

5. Turn on High-Contrast mode.

The LED-backlit screens used on most modern notebooks expend less energy displaying black pixels than those showing colors. Setting your computer to show white and yellow text on a black background can improve battery life and even make text more readable when sunlight is hitting your screen.

Problem hoher CPU-Last behoben

According to our colorimeter, they did – in the sense that the average display on premium laptops today is very good compared to a year ago. There are better displays available, but the average provides a solid mix of brightness, contrast, and colors that are going to please the average person. That’s almost exactly where the Swift 7’s display lands.

It comes in at 273 nits of brightness, which is below our preferred 300 nits but – you guessed it – roughly average for the class. The HP Envy 13 is brighter at 369 nits, and the IdeaPad S940 is much brighter at 470 nits, but most laptops in our comparison group come in at around the same as the Swift 7.

If there’s a metric where the Swift 7’s display disappoints, it’s in its contrast ratio. It managed just a 790:1 ratio, which is at the low end of our comparison group and well under the 1,000:1 ratio we like to see from modern premium laptops. The HP Spectre Folio exceeds that threshold and the Asus ZenBook S13 comes close. The Swift 7 isn’t bad, mind you, but we’ve come to expect better.

The Swift 7 felt the tiniest bit sluggish when we had too many browser tabs and apps running.

Color gamut and accuracy show the Swift 7 smack dab in the middle at 72 percent of AdobeRGB, except the very good IdeaPad S940’s 83 percent. You have to step up to machines like the Dell XPS 15 4K display and the HP Spectre x360 15 AMOLED panel to get 90 percent of AdobeRGB or better.

In real-life use, we have no complaints. The Swift 7’s display provides all the colors and contrast we need for comfortable productivity work, and its gamma is only a little dark at 2.3 (2.2 is perfect), and so Netflix and other video looks just fine. The Swift 7 isn’t necessarily a laptop for creative professionals, but then again, the performance limitations likely disqualify it anyway.

Audio performance is another victim of the tiny chassis. Volume doesn’t go particularly high, in fact, it’s one of the quietest laptops we’ve heard in recent memory. It’s clear enough, without distortion, and mids and highs are pleasant (bass is non-existent, as expected). But if you want to entertain a few friends, you’ll be disappointed. Keep a pair of headphones or a Bluetooth speaker handy.

A LOW-POWER PROCESSOR THAT’S A STEP BEHIND

The Swift 7 equips an 8th-gen Intel Core i7-8500Y, which is a fanless dual-core CPU that’s aimed at extending batteries and reducing heat. As we experienced with the Spectre Folio, this processor is fully capable of solid productivity performance – did Acer get the best out of it?

In short, no. The Swift 7 falls behind the Spectre Folio in our testing, which makes it considerably slower than laptops running Intel’s 8th-gen quad-core U-series CPUs. In the Geekbench 4 synthetic benchmark, for example, the Swift 7 managed 4,031 in the single-core test and just 6,449 in the multi-core test. That’s just slightly faster than the 2018 Swift 7 with the older Core i7-7Y75 processor, and significantly behind the Spectre Folio.

When we ran the Swift 7 through our Handbrake test that encodes a 420MB video to H.265, the laptop took 607 seconds to finish. That’s 40 seconds behind the Spectre Folio and 10 seconds slower than the 2018 Swift 7. The ZenBook S13, with its full-power CPU finished in a much faster 212 seconds.

We suspect that Acer tuned the system to avoid generating too much heat. That makes sense in a fanless laptop with such a thin chassis. And indeed, we never felt the laptop get much warmer than around 100 degrees F on the bottom of the chassis. But the tradeoff is reduced performance, to the point where – unlike the Spectre Folio – the Swift 7 did feel the tiniest bit sluggish when we had many browser tabs open and ran Microsoft Office applications. That’s not a good sign.

Lenovo's Legion Y545 is an interesting addition to its 500-series lineup of gaming laptops. It's built with the same single-hinge chassis that we saw used for the budget Legion Y7000, but it's outfitted with performance hardware that you'll also find in the Legion Y540 that's built with the updated chassis we also saw in the impressive Legion 700-series lineup. It's a bit confusing, especially when you see how close pricing is between the Y540 and Y545, but the latter laptop we have here for review is ultimately a bit cheaper when you don't factor in Lenovo's frequent sales and instant savings offers. I used the Legion Y545 for about a week to see whether or not it's worth your hard-earned dough.

Lenovo supplied Windows Central with a review unit of the Legion Y545, with 9th Gen Intel Core i7-9750H processor (CPU), 16GB of DDR4-2666MHz RAM, NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti graphics card (GPU) with 4GB of VRAM, and a 128GB PCIe solid-state drive (SSD) coupled with a 1TB SATA hard-disk drive (HDD) for mass storage. It's also equipped with an FHD non-touch display with a 60Hz refresh rate; for those who want a smoother picture, there's likewise a 144Hz option available for a bit more money.

This exact configuration costs about $1,300 at Lenovo, though baseline models with 9th Gen Intel Core i5-9300H CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB HDD, and NVIDIA GTX 1650 GPU start at about $1,000.For a fully specced model, including Core i7 CPU, 32GB of RAM, NVIDIA RTX 2060 GPU, 2TB HDD with 1TB SSD, and 144Hz FHD display, you're looking at about $2,080.

The Legion Y545's chassis has a soft-touch finish for the black interior, and while it does pick up some smudges like a ThinkPad, it feels rather luxurious to hold. The aluminum lid has a sizeable Legion logo that lights up when the laptop is in action, and it has some slight tapering along the edges for an aggressive look. This design is heightened by the relatively thick rear end, complete with dual exhaust vents and a generous collection of ports that makes cable management easy if you're primarily operating at a desk. The laptop weighs about the same as most of Lenovo's 15-inch options at around five pounds; it's not the most portable device, but it's not going to drag you down like the 17-inch Legion Y740.

Along the back are Lenovo's proprietary charging port for the beefy 230W adapter, USB-A 3.1, a single USB-A 3.1, HDMI 2.0, RJ45 Ethernet, and Mini DisplayPort 1.4, while the sides of the laptop each have another USB-A 3.1 port that's handy for an external gaming mouse. The left side also has a 3.5mm audio jack for your gaming headset. This should be enough ports for most gaming accessories, and if you have VR ambitions, you shouldn't have any issues connecting, say, and Oculus Rift S, which you can actually find bundled with some Y545 models.

The review model has a 15.6-inch display with 60Hz refresh rate — you can opt for a 144Hz option, which makes the most sense if you also go with the powerful RTX 2060 GPU — complete with a thin bezel around the top and sides. It promotes a modern look, though the single hinge in the middle of the lid does make it ultimately feel a bit flimsy, especially when compared to the dual-hinge setup used in the Y540.

The display only gets up to about 300 nits brightness, but the matte finish helps deal with glare in well-lit rooms. I didn't have much trouble gaming indoors, though if you like to enjoy the sun while having some fun, you'll probably find yourself squinting at the screen. Color reproduction hits 96% sRGB and 73% AdobeRGB, both respectable results that are evident as soon as you open the lid. Games look great on this display, and the FHD resolution is well-suited to the size.

Like the Legion Y7000, the keyboard stretches from edge to edge, leaving enough space for sizeable keys and a number pad. There's plenty of travel and spacing is comfortable when using the WASD keys and their surrounding counterparts, and the spacebar is balanced to prevent misclicks while gaming. If you want your laptop to have customizable RGB lighting behind the keyboard, you'll have to move to Lenovo's 700-series, because the Y545 uses a three-stage white backlight with no customization options.

The Precision touchpad is relatively large, and the mylar surface makes for smooth pointing, though it's safe to assume most gamers are going to promptly plug in a mouse for far better control. My main grievance with the touchpad is its off-center placement, which puts it under your left palm while using the WASD keys. There's a Fn key shortcut along the top of the keyboard to turn off the touchpad completely, and the break in the chassis for the touchpad is minimal enough that you probably won't notice your hand rubbing along it. Still, it's something to note.

The Google Pixel Slate lasted 9 hours and 51 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test (web browsing at 150 nits), which is above the 8:13 category average. It outlasted the Surface Pro 6 (9:20), but fell short of the iPad Pro (13:14) and the Galaxy Book 2 (10:41).

For a long time, big gaming notebooks were just that: thick, heavy, and more powerful versions of standard laptops, even laptops as ridiculous as the Acer Predator 21X from back in 2017. But more recently, gaming notebook makers have been experimenting with more far-out designs like what we’ve seen from the Asus ROG Mothership—which looks like what you’d get if a Microsoft Surface and a Star Destroyer had a baby— and now this: the Acer Predator Triton 900.

Before you even open it, the Triton 900 appears more cut and chiseled compared to something like MSI’s GT75. Its exterior panels are made from machined aluminum, and despite weighing in at just under 10 pounds (9.92 to be exact), the Triton 900's body feels rock solid and doesn’t suffer from even a hint of flex.

But open up the Triton 900 and you’ll reveal its secret weapon: a 17.3-inch 4K touchscreen that can rotate almost a full 180 degrees inside its innovative frame. This means you can use transform the notebook into 4 modes. There’s traditional laptop mode, a sort of gaming mode enabled by tilting the display and pulling it forward, a presentation mode where the screen points in the complete opposite direction, and something that’s almost a full-blown tablet mode, but not quite.

The first position is self-explanatory, while the second one is a great option for gamers who sit like Overwatch pro Dafran, with their noses 6 inches or so away from the screen. But my favorite transformation is something I’ve nicknamed battleship mode, as it basically allows the Triton 900 to become a high-powered mobile all-in-one.

By fully rotating the screen into presentation mode and then positioning the laptop so that its deck and guts sit behind the screen, you can attach an external keyboard and mouse and get a better gaming experience than a lot of custom gaming desktops. The Triton 900 has a plethora of ports including two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, dedicated headphone and mic jacks, and Ethernet, not to mention full-size connectors for both HDMI and DisplayPort.

The only thing that really takes away from battleship mode is the placements of the Triton 900's power port, which is smack dab in the middle of the laptops backside. It sticks out and prevents you from pushing a keyboard closer to the screen. And if you’re thinking of gaming without being plugged into an outlet, you might want to reconsider. On our video rundown test, the Triton 900 lasted just two hours and five minutes on a single charge. That means getting through even one round of Apex Legends on battery power alone could be real dicey, though that shouldn’t really be a surprise on a laptop like this.

The only mode that comes up short is tablet mode, because the Triton 900's hinge frame comes with two small tabs that prevents the display from rotating a full 180-degrees. That means the Triton 900's screen still has a slight tilt when laid flat, which makes it closer to something like the easel mode you get with a Microsoft Surface.

Of course, all this comes with a price, both practically and financially. The Triton 900 starts at around $3,800 for an Intel Core i7-9750H CPU, 32GB of RAM, 1TB SSD, and an Nvidia RTX 2080 GPU. And if you opt for one with a Core i9 processor similar to what we have in our review model, the price jumps up to just shy of $5,000. Yikes.

That said, the Triton 900's biggest burden may not even be an economic one. Owning a laptop this big and powerful isn’t like deciding what color shirt to wear, it’s a lifestyle. You have to go to the gym so you can properly carry the Triton 900 from one place to another without feeling sore the next day. The laptop alone weighs just under 10 pounds, while its power brick adds another three and half pounds. The only real concession to portability Acer makes on the Triton 900 is not having to lug around dual power bricks, which sometimes happens on monsters like the MSI GT75.

You may also need to get a new bag, because the Triton 900 doesn’t even come close to fitting in my everyday carry messenger bag. In fact, there are some backpacks that can’t even accommodate the Triton 900's dimensions, not to mention any other gamer gear you might want to lug around like headphones, mouse, and keyboard.

Speaking of mice, while most self-respecting PC gamers wouldn’t dream of playing even casual titles with a laptop’s built-in touchpad, it’s an especially bad idea on the Triton 900. In order to make room for the lights and glass window that lets you see inside the Triton 900's case, Acer had to shift the laptop’s touchpad to the right of the keyboard, which didn’t leave the Triton 900 with a lot of space. The touchpad is seriously skinny, and while it does have discrete buttons for left and right clicks, it still feels cramped.

Dell Inspiron 7720 Battery all-laptopbattery.com

In this case Lenovo opted to send a top-of-the-line ThinkPad X1 Carbon, leaving me with the only decision: which display panel to choose. In my eyes, the 4K display with Dolby Vision HDR and 500 nits of brightness is the right one for me. The other option is the non-touch, full-HD with 400 nit display. I was warned that the 4K panel could slash battery life to about half compared to the FHD panel. I quickly did the math: under a synthetic battery life benchmark test, the full-HD yielded 18.3 hours, so half that still netted 8 to 9 hours.

Am I regretting my decision? No, and that’s an emphatic no. For a start, the latest-gen X1 supports rapid charging, similar to most smartphones nowadays. At 80%, the X1 fully charged in under 16-minutes with the included 65-watt charger; that’s not bad at all. I noticed that even at 50% brightness, the battery life is going to take a big hit. Within under an hour, the battery meter already dropped to 90%. Yikes! I’m fully committed so there’s no turning back now. Opting for the best display offered on the X1 will also set you back $269.

There’s also some chatter and concerns about app-scaling on the 4K display. As far as I can see, there aren’t any rough edges or blocky-looking rendering. Browsing through Windows’ settings, the recommended scaling of text, apps, and other items should be set to 300%, but I found that 200% provides the best balance. Of course, what’s best for you will depend on your eyesight, but I definitely prefer having the choice in hardware and software.

For most buyers, the 14” FHD with 1920 x 1080 with or without multi-touch capability is more than adequate. It’s the only panel Lenovo offer with touch, too, and if you want Lenovo’s new PrivacyGuard for screen security feature, FHD is your only option. Stepping up to the WQHD gets you a 2560 x 1440 IPS glossy multi-touch display which is what I had on the gen-6 X1. I found the app-scaling rendered text too small for my eyes, and I wasn’t a fan of the 16:9 aspect ratio.

An IR camera with Windows Hello support comes standard with the 4K panel, and is optional with the other displays. It’s something sorely lacking on the outgoing model, even though it was available on the ThinkPad X1 Extreme, so I’m delighted to see it spread to the new X1 Carbon.

Do I miss not having multi-touch? Yes and no. There are times when it’s just more convenient to poke at the display; such as being in a tight space on an airplane. However, for anyone with OCD, the biggest drawback is getting the display all smudgy. I found that even with the ThinkPad X1 Extreme with a 4K display and multi-touch, I didn’t use the feature often enough to make this a must-have. At the end of the day, your mileage may vary. The idea of having this feature is nice but not necessary.

Living with less than stellar laptop speakers isn’t the end of the world and shouldn’t deter one from a major purchasing decision. That said, the speaker placement and sound quality of the outgoing model led to less than desirable performance.

Thankfully Lenovo heard our feedback. Repositioning the button and port layout – in particular the power button, which is now much smaller and has been shifted to the right-hand side, next to one of two USB-A ports – has cleared up prime real-estate for better speakers. Right below the display are dual Dolby Atmos speakers, for example, which work alongside two front-facing top-firing tweeters and the down-firing woofers underneath. The result is a far more immersive sound experience.

The other feature I’m jumping for joy over are the four far-field microphones. The two microphones placed at the top are perfect for voice commands, conference calls, and – in my case – recording meetings and press conferences for real-time voice transcription.

I’m in three to four meetings, product briefings, and press conferences a week. That’s a ton of information to capture, so I heavily rely on real-time voice transcription to keep everything organized. The four 360-degree far-field mics do a great job capturing audio from up to 10-feet away, in my experience. Even if you’re not recording meetings, the system is perfect for Alexa or Cortana for search queries, controlling the smart home, and other features.

In some instances where the speaker is too far away, I’m able to take advantage of the 3.5mm combo headphone jack and TRRS mic input. Utilizing the portable Rode Go Wireless microphone system still allows me to capture clear and crisp audio. Not only that, I can finally use my custom in-ear monitor headphones, too!

Beim Preis langt Asus ordentlich hin.
