Krzanich geriet zuletzt stark in die Kritik, weil er sein millionenschweres Aktienpaket in im November 2017 verkauft hatte. Der Zeitpunkt war höchst ungünstig: Krzanich wusste seit Juni 2017 von schweren Sicherheitslücken in Intel-Prozessoren ("Meltdown"), deren Bekanntwerden Anfang 2018 den Aktienkurs von Intel einbrechen ließ.Vorsicht vor angeblichen Computerproblemen: Abzocker inszenieren eine Support-Hotline, die vermeintliche Fehlermeldungen beheben soll – und verschaffen sich dann Zugriff zu Ihrem PC.


Die Bundesnetzagentur geht gegen eine neue Masche von Telefonabzocke vor. Diese besteht darin, dass auf Internetseiten Werbeanzeigen eingeblendet werden, die wie Fehlermeldungen des Computer aussehen. Nutzer sollen laut dem Inhalt der Anzeigen zur Lösung eines Problems bei einer vermeintlichen Telefon-Hotline von Microsoft anrufen. Wer dort anruft, landet allerdings bei Menschen, die versuchen, sich Zugriff zum Computer zu verschaffen oder nutzlose Software gegen eine Geldzahlung zu verkaufen.


Die Bundesnetzagentur warnt ausdrücklich vor solchen Werbeanzeigen, die sich gern auch in eigenen Fenstern öffnen. Nutzer sollten sie unbedingt ignorieren.Die Regulierungsbehörde hat nach eigenen Angaben vier 0800-Nummern aus dem Verkehr gezogen und sperren lassen, die im Zusammenhang mit dieser Betrugsmasche genutzt wurden.


Die Masche mit Anrufen vermeintlicher Microsoft-Techniker ist nicht neu. Immer wieder nutzen Betrüger die weite Verbreitung des Betriebssystems aus, um Daten auszuspähen oder Nutzer zu Zahlungen zu veranlassen. Nach Angaben von Microsoft enthalten offizielle Fehlermeldungen von Windows niemals Telefonnummern.


So sind zum Beispiel Funklöcher in der Wohnung leichter zu schließen. Geräte verbinden sich jeweils über den Zugangspunkt mit dem besten Empfang.

Sind mehrere Fritzboxen mit DECT-Telefonanlage im Netz geschaltet, können nun auch DECT-Telefone und -Smart-Home-Geräte wie Thermostate oder Steckdosen von allen Zugangspunkten des Netzwerks aus genutzt werden.



AVM öffnet die Fritzboxen außerdem für Geräte von anderen Herstellern, die nach dem DECT-ULE-Standard arbeiten und HAN-FUN-kompatibel sind. "HAN FUN" steht für "Home Area Network Functional". Als erste kompatible Geräte nennt AVM etwa Wandschalter, Tür- und Fensterkontakte oder Bewegungsmelder. Sie können auch zu Schaltgruppen zusammengefasst werden - dann lässt sich etwa das Licht schalten, wenn der Bewegungsmelder anspringt.


Auf einer Computermesse in Taiwan hat Asus sein neues Highend-Notebook vorgestellt: das ZenBook Pro 15. Eine Besonderheit ist sein sogenanntes "ScreenPad" – ein Bildschirm-Touchpad.


Das Asus Highend-Notebook ZenBook Pro 15 (UX580) wurde auf der Messe Computex in Taiwan vorgestellt. Es verfügt über ein 5,5 Zoll großes Bildschirm-Touchpad. Mit dem sogenannten "ScreenPad" sollen sich viele Anwendungen besser steuern lassen, erklärt der Hersteller. So lassen sich bestimmte Funktionen ausgewählter Apps wie Microsoft Word, Excel und Power Point auf das Display legen.

Apple’s first wave of MacBook Pro updates for 2020 have finally launched, with an update to the 13-inch MacBook Pro. But there’s more in the works, whether it’s a refreshed MacBook Pro 16-inch, Apple-made ARM processors on the horizon, and even a dual-screen MacBook. These are exciting times for fans of Apple’s laptops.


Originally scheduled to launch at a now-canceled spring event, Apple has given the 13-inch MacBook Pro an update. It was announced on May 4, following a similar refresh to the MacBook Air in April.


However, a more substantial update is also in the works. A 14-inch laptop, set to replace the 13-inch altogether. Apple leaker Jon Prosser states the update could come as early as WWDC in early June, while other sources point to the 14.1-inch MacBook Pro landing later this fall alongside a refreshed 16-inch MacBook Pro. We expect this to be true since Apple just refreshed the 13-inch MacBook Pro this May.

And what about the price? Well, the newly updated MacBook Pro still starts at $1,299, the same price as in previous years. If Apple moves to a 14-inch MacBook Pro, we’d expect prices to stay similar.



We have expected a small bump to the MacBook Pro 13 for a few months now. When the update came in early May 2020, however, it was actually a little more wide-ranging than expected.


We’ll start with the phrase that was on everyone’s lips: Magic Keyboard. Ever since the MacBook Pro 16 debuted with the revamped scissor-switch-enabled Magic Keyboard, the writing has been on the wall for the failure-prone butterfly keyboard. Now, Apple has brought it to the MacBook Pro 13, meaning every laptop in Apple’s range comes with a vastly improved set of keys. Microsoft hat auf der IFA 2018 das nächste große Update für Windows 10 angekündigt. Es soll im Oktober kommen. Bei dem sogenannten "Windows 10 Oktober 2018 Update" handelt es sich um die sechste große Aktualisierung für das Betriebssystem. Im April erschien das fünfte Update genannt "Red Stone 4".


Das Oktober-Update soll viele Neuerungen in allen Bereichen enthalten. Beispielsweise wird die Zwischenablage erweitert. Wie "PC Welt" berichtet, können Nutzer in Zukunft mit der Tastenkombination "Windows-Taste + V" eine History aufrufen. Die zeigt zuletzt hinzugefügte Inhalte wie Texte, Bilder und Co. Nutzer können diese wieder auswählen und auch anpinnen. So werden sie nicht mehr von der Zwischenablage gelöscht. Zudem können Nutzer die gespeicherten Inhalte mit anderen Geräten synchronisieren.


Der Windows-Explorer soll einen Dark Mode erhalten, berichtet "Computerbild.de". Aktivieren Nutzer den dunklen Modus, wird in Zukunft auch der Hintergrund im Fenster des Windows-Explorer dunkel sein. Bisher funktionierte das nur mit Windows-Apps. Der Grund: Der Windows-Explorer basierte auf älteren Systemkomponenten.


Der Windows Defender soll um die Schutzfunktion "Windows Defender Exploit Guard" erweitert werden. Die erkennt beispielsweise, wenn Apps sich verdächtig verhalten. Die Funktion gab es bisher nur für Firmenkunden.


Notebook-Nutzer sollen über eine Schnittstelle namens "Thunderbolt 3" externe Grafikkarten künftig während des laufenden Betriebs trennen können. Die Kopplung des Smartphones an den Rechner soll sich dank der App "Your Phone" besser gestalten. Beispielsweise können Android-Nutzer mithilfe der App Fotos direkt an den PC übertragen.


Weitere Neuerungen sind beispielsweise neue Emoticons für Nachrichten. Die Windows-Uhr soll unter anderem dank Software-Zeitstempel genauer laufen. Das Programm "Snipping Tool" mit dem sich Screenshots vom Bildschirm machen lassen, wird entfernt. Stattdessen hat Microsoft das Werkzeug "Bildschirmskizze" ins allgemeine Betriebssystem ausgelagert. Snipping Tool soll aber als App im Windows Store verfügbar sein.

Viele Neuerungen erwarten Nutzer auch im Microsoft-Browser Edge. So soll das automatische Abspielen von Videos für jede Seite individuell eingestellt werden. Auch die PDF-Funktion des Browsers wurde verbessert. Im Lesemodus gibt es eine Option "Zeilenfokussierung", wo Nutzer einstellen können, ob drei oder fünf Zeilen angezeigt werden sollen. Zudem wurde das Menü des Browser überarbeitet und wirkt nun aufgeräumter.


Das neue Update wird an über 700 Millionen Geräte mit Windows 10 ausgespielt. Das genaue Datum hat Microsoft bisher verschwiegen.

Wenn das WLAN-Signal nicht im ganzen Haus ankommt, bieten laut Stiftung Warentest klassische Repeater oft die günstigste Lösung. Mesh-Systeme hingegen hätten einen großen Nachteil.


Wenn bei schwächelndem WLAN daheim keine andere Maßnahme mehr hilft, muss eine Verstärkung des Signals her. Von den drei verfügbaren technischen Lösungen ist der klassische WLAN-Repeater oft die beste und günstigste Lösung – ein aktueller Router des gleichen Herstellers vorausgesetzt.


Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt die Stiftung Warentest, die ein Dutzend Verstärker-Systeme untersucht hat ("test"-Ausgabe 9/18). Mesh-WLAN-Systeme, die das Funknetz des Routers ersetzen, und dessen Zugangspunkte untereinander kommunizieren, zeigten gegenüber den Repeatern keinen Vorteil bei der Datenübertragung und verbrauchen relativ viel Strom.



Das beste Gesamtpaket bietet dem Test zufolge der AVM Fritz-WLAN-Repeater 1750E (Gesamtnote 2,2) für 67 Euro, gefolgt von TP-Links WLAN-Repeater AC2600 WiFi RE650 (Gesamtnote 2,5) für 123 Euro.

Bestes Mesh-System wurde Google WiFi (Gesamtnote 2,6) im Zweierset für 249 Euro. Und bei den Powerline-Adaptern mit WLAN wurde das AVM-Set Fritz-Powerline 1260E WLAN (Gesamtnote 3,0) für 135 Euro am besten getestet.

Fast in Vergessenheit geraten ist, dass in dieser Zeit auch in Deutschland an dem Konzept einer Computermaus gearbeitet wurde. Für die Bundesanstalt für Flugsicherung (BFS) in Frankfurt entwickelte eine Abteilung des Elektro-Pioniers Telefunken in Konstanz ein System, in dem ein Zeiger benötigt wurde. Eine "Rollkugelsteuerung" sollte den Fluglotsen ermöglichen, auf einem großen Radar-Bildschirm Darstellungen von Flugzeugpositionen zu markieren. Einige Wochen vor der Demo in San Francisco stellte Telefunken sein Konzept vor.

Engelbart hatte die Idee also nicht allein. Doch im Gegensatz zu den Deutschen ließ sich sein Arbeitgeber SRI die Erfindung 1970 als "X-Y-Positionsanzeigesteuerung für die Bewegung per Hand über eine beliebige Oberfläche zur Verschiebung eines Positionsanzeigers auf dem Bildschirm" unter der Nummer 3,541,541 als Patent eintragen.


Einen Erfolg im Massenmarkt konnten damals aber weder Telefunken noch das Team in Kalifornien feiern. Engebarts Auftraggeber Nasa konnte mit der ersten Maus nicht viel anfangen, auch weil bald deutlich wurde, dass seine Maus in der Schwerelosigkeit nicht angewandt werden konnte. Und Telefunken baute die "Rollkugelsteuerung" zwar in seinen Großrechner TR440 ein, doch diese Computerschränke bekam kaum jemand zu Gesicht. Die Großrechner kosteten bis zu 15 Millionen D-Mark und wurden in geringen Stückzahlen von der Bundesanstalt für Flugsicherung und anderen Behörden verwendet.


Das Konzept der Computermaus verschwand für einige Jahre wieder in der Versenkung, wurde dann vom legendären kalifornischen Forschungszentrum Xerox Parc aufgegriffen, wo auch eine grafische Benutzungsoberfläche für den Computer Xerox Alto entwickelt wurde. Aber auch dieser Rechner war für ein Massenpublikum viel zu teuer. Apple-Mitgründer Steve Jobs sah den Alto 1979 und übernahm das Konzept der grafischen Bedienoberfläche. Apples "Lisa" war der erste Computer, der für die Maus ausgelegt war. Mit dem Macintosh erreichte die Maus 1984 dann den Durchbruch. Dieser Erfolg beeindruckte wiederum Microsoft-Mitbegründer Bill Gates so sehr, dass er sich von der Kommandozeile von MS-DOS verabschiedete und nach dem Vorbild des Apple Macintosh dann Maus und Icon als Standard bei Windows einführte.



Von Kugel zur Laserdiode

Die von Engelbart entwickelte Computermaus hat mit den heutigen Mäusen nur wenig gemeinsam. Der erste Maus-Prototyp besaß anstelle einer Kugel ein Rad für die Cursorbewegungen. In den siebziger Jahren passte der Schweizer Jean-Daniel Nicoud das Konzept an, indem er die Regelwiderstände in Engelbarts Maus durch optische Messgeber ersetzte – und damit auch den Grundstein für den unternehmerischen Erfolg der Firma Logitech legte. Heutige Computermäuse funktionieren zumeist mit Laserdioden, die auf Infrarot-Technik basieren.

Als Eingabeinstrument wird die Maus aber inzwischen vom menschlichen Finger überholt. Auf Milliarden von Smartphones und Tabletcomputern wird ohne Maus gewischt und getippt. Und in Zukunft könnte die menschliche Sprache wiederum zur populärsten Dialogmethode zwischen Mensch und Maschine werden.


Microsoft wird seinen Webbrowser Edge künftig auf Basis von Technologie des Rivalen Google betreiben – und will ihn erstmals auch auf Apples Mac-Computer und Rechner mit älteren Windows-Versionen bringen.Der Software-Konzern bestätigte in der Nacht zum Freitag, dass Edge künftig mit der Web-Engine Chromium laufen werde, die Software-Entwicklern zur freien Verfügung steht. Das hatte vor einigen Tagen bereits das Technologie-Blog "Windows Central" berichtet.


Und Microsofts Umstieg könne diesen Trend noch verstärken, warnte der Entwickler des konkurrierenden Browsers Firefox, Mozilla. "Microsoft überlässt Google noch mehr Kontrolle über das Online-Leben", kritisierte Mozilla-Chef Chris Beard. Vom geschäftlichen Standpunkt sei es zwar verständlich, dass Microsoft das Handtuch bei seiner EdgeHTML-Technologie wirft. Aber es sei "schrecklich", wenn ein Unternehmen fundamentale Online-Infrastruktur im Griff habe. Der Firefox-Browser kam zuletzt laut Statcounter auf einen Marktanteil von rund fünf Prozent.

Microsoft hatte einst selbst die dominierende Position bei Webbrowsern mit dem Internet Explorer. Sie wurde aufgebrochen als zunächst Firefox und dann Googles Chrome auf den Markt kamen – und Apples Safari-Browser einen großen Anteil der Web-Nutzung auf iPhone und Mac übernahm.



Neue Computer kommen häufig mit unerwünschter Werbesoftware und anderen unnützen Dreingaben daher. Diese entfernen Nutzer am besten sofort bei der Einrichtung, rät die Fachzeitschrift "Chip" (01/2019). Als Beispiele nennen die Experten etwa zusätzliche Werkzeugleisten (Toolbars) für den Browser oder Programme, die Werbung einblenden. Aber auch Microsoft packt in Windows 10 selbsttätig Werbung für Software in das Startmenü. Andere Beispiele sind vorinstallierte Testversionen von Virenscannern oder Officepaketen, die nach kurzer Zeit kostenpflichtig werden.

Während sich noch knapp die Hälfte der 14- bis 29-Jährigen für ausreichend kompetent hält, um Installationen in der Regel allein hinzubekommen, stehen Ältere vor deutlichen Problemen. Das ergab eine Studie im Auftrag des IT-Branchenverbandes Bitkom. Wo finden sie Hilfe beim Einrichten von Smartphone, Rechner und anderem technischem Gerät?


Produkthandbuch, Service-Hotlines und Chats

Erste Anlaufstelle ist das Produkthandbuch. "Eine Gebrauchsanleitung muss die Funktionen des Gerätes und die entsprechende Benutzung erläutern", erklärt Katharina Grasl von der Verbraucherzentrale Bayern. Außerdem muss sie ausreichend auf mögliche Gefahren und Sicherheitsrisiken hinweisen. "Liegt einem Gerät keine oder nur eine unzureichende Anleitung bei, kann Verbrauchern gegebenenfalls ein Anspruch auf Nacherfüllung zustehen." Das bedeutet, dass der Händler oder Hersteller eine ausreichende Anleitung nachreichen muss. Ist das nicht möglich, kann der Käufer vom Kaufvertrag zurücktreten.


Doch nicht immer helfen mitgelieferte Gebrauchsanleitungen weiter. Bloß jeder Zweite findet sie laut Bitkom-Studie bei der Inbetriebnahme eines neuen Geräts hilfreich. Nutzen möchte man das neue Gerät aber natürlich trotzdem. Es liegt nahe, dann den Kundendienst des Herstellers zu kontaktieren. Eine erste Anlaufstelle kann die Website des Unternehmens sein. Dort werden häufig gestellte Fragen (FAQ) beantwortet - manchmal mit gut nachvollziehbaren Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitungen. Eine andere Möglichkeit bieten die Service-Hotlines und Chats der Hersteller.


Häufig sind diese Angebote kostenfrei. Bei Hotlines ist das zum Beispiel an einer 0800-Vorwahl zu erkennen. Ist eine Hotline dagegen kostenpflichtig, darf ein Anruf nach einem Urteil des Europäischen Gerichtshof nicht teurer sein als ein normaler Festnetzanruf, erklärt Georg Tryba von der Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfalen.


Probleme mit Hotlines

Allerdings helfen solche Service-Angebote teils nur bedingt weiter. So hat etwa die Stiftung Warentest die Qualität von Service-Hotlines und -Chats mehrerer Telekommunikationsunternehmen untersucht. Das Ergebnis: Chat-Roboter verstanden die Fragen fast nie, sondern reagierten nur auf Schlüsselwörter. Und auch die Chats mit echten Mitarbeitern schnitten schlecht ab. Etwas besser war die Beratung durch Mitarbeiter bei Telefon-Hotlines. Trotzdem schnitten alle getesteten Hotlines im Punkt "Problemlösung" nur mit den Noten "ausreichend" oder "mangelhaft" ab.



Auch die Verbraucherzentrale NRW hat die Support-Angebote von Unternehmen getestet: Bei Fragen oder Beschwerden via Facebook oder Website erhielten Kunden in jedem siebten Fall erst gar keine Antwort. Allerdings wurde die Hälfte der Anfragen via Facebook innerhalb einer Stunde bearbeitet - wer auf schnelle Hilfe hofft, kann es dort also durchaus versuchen.


Erklärvideos oder Bekannte fragen

Auch an anderer Stelle gibt es im Internet Angebote zur Selbsthilfe: Forenbeiträge, Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitungen auf den Seiten von Technikmagazinen oder Erklärvideos auf Youtube & Co. "Bei kleineren Anliegen kann es sinnvoll sein, sich im Internet Hilfe zu suchen", meint Georg Tryba. Allerdings sollte man dann seine Fähigkeiten nicht überschätzen. Denn wer dabei aus Versehen etwas kaputt macht, bekommt den Schaden nicht ersetzt. "Ein Youtube-Tutorial macht noch keinen Informatiker", warnt Tryba.



Wer sich lieber persönlich helfen lassen möchte, findet auch offline Rat. Wer sein Gerät im Geschäft erstanden hat, kann dort auf Hilfe hoffen. Auch technikaffine Bekannte sind gute Ansprechpartner. Vor allem für Senioren gibt es außerdem eine Vielzahl von Angeboten wie etwa offene Fragestunden bei Wohlfahrtsverbänden. Auch die kommunalen Seniorenbüros bieten Kurse und Treffs an. Im Rahmen der Aktion "Sprechstunde Internet" geben etwa versierte Freiwillige ihr Technik- und Internetwissen weiter. Und auch an vielen Volkshochschulen gibt es Einsteigerkurse zum Umgang mit Smartphone und Co.

Der Konzern musste die Aktualisierung wegen Fehlern mehrere Male zurückziehen oder einschränken.


Das Update mit der Versionsnummer 1809 ist bereits seit Ende Dezember für alle Nutzer verfügbar. Wer es installieren wollte, musste den Download aber manuell starten. Jetzt soll laut Microsoft die Aktualisierung automatisch an alle Geräte ausgeliefert werden, "von denen wir glauben, dass sie die beste Update-Erfahrung auf der Grundlage unseres maschinellen Lernmodells der nächsten Generation haben werden", schreibt der Konzern.


Ursprünglich erschien das Oktober-Update für Windows 10 am zweiten Oktober 2018. Doch die neue Version führte auf vielen Rechnern zu Problemen: Zu Beginn wurden Daten von Nutzern zum Teil gelöscht. Danach gab es Probleme mit auf Rechnern mit Apples iCloud oder bestimmten Treibern von Intel-Chips. Zuletzt gab es Schwierigkeiten mit Geräten, auf denen der "Morphisec Protector" läuft. Microsoft schränkte die Aktualisierung darum mehrere Male ein.


Für das erfolglose Windows 10 Mobile hat Microsoft die Entwicklung eingestellt. Der Support endet Ende 2019. Danach gibt es keine Sicherheitsupdates für das mobile Betriebssystem mehr. Microsoft empfiehlt, auf Apples iOS oder Googles Android umzusteigen.Zwar wird die Nutzung eines Windows-10-Mobile-Smartphones dann unsicher, aber deren Marktanteil ist so gering, dass die Wahrscheinlichkeit für Angriffe sehr gering sind.



Ab Ende 2019 werden viele Nutzer von Windows 10 Mobile umsteigen. Ungewöhnlich ist, dass Microsoft die Konkurrent empfiehlt. Und das liest sich in einem Hilfe-Dokument so: "Mit dem Ende des Supports für Windows 10 Mobile OS empfehlen wir, dass Kunden auf ein unterstütztes Gerät mit Android oder iOS wechseln. Microsofts Auftrag, jeder Person und jeder Organisation mehr Möglichkeiten zu bieten, veranlasst uns, unsere mobilen Apps auf diesen Plattformen und Geräten zu unterstützen."


Weil davon 7 als kritisch und 40 zumindest als wichtig eingestuft werden, rät das Bundesamt für die Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) zu einem zügigen Anstoßen der Installation über die Windows-Update-Funktion, falls die Auto-Update-Funktion deaktiviert sein sollte.Klicken Sie dazu im Windows-Menü auf "alle Programme" und dann auf die Windows-Update Funktion und prüfen Sie, ob alle Updates installiert sind. Starten Sie "nach Update suchen" durch Anklicken. Wenn die "Auto-Update-Funktion" aktiviert ist, sollte jedes Update automatisch heruntergeladen und installiert werden. Das ist die beste Methode, um Updates so schnell wie möglich zu bekommen.


Bei den kritischen Sicherheitslücken besteht laut Microsoft die Gefahr, dass Angreifer Schadcode auf dem System ausführen können – in einigen Fällen reicht dazu der Besuch einer manipulierten Webseite oder das Öffnen einer präparierten E-Mail oder Datei.



Update: Wie "heise online" berichtet, melden Nutzer nach Installation der Updates KB4480970 und KB4480960 für Windows 7 SP1 und Windows Server 2008 R2 SP2 Netzwerkprobleme. Also ich habe gerade versucht das Januar Update von Windows Insider zu installieren doch leider ohne Erfolg. Beim Neustartversuch kommt die Fehlermeldung 0x800706ba ( angeblich RPC Server ) und nach manuellem Neustart bleibt das Update bei 85 % miteinfrieren des kompletten Systems stehen. Systemänderungen wurden zurückgesetzt. Das ganze hab ich jetzt 2 mal versucht . Lieber warte ich jetzt bis die den Bug entfernt haben.

As with any computer, the CPU carries out most of the processes for the laptop. Any time the computer needs to access or change data, the CPU executes that task. Better CPUs will be able to process more data at quicker speeds. Note that the pure clock speed of a CPU doesn’t necessarily give the whole picture — if you’re unsure about your options, copy the processor’s model number (such as “Core i5-9400H”) into a web search to compare your choices.

The latest offerings from Intel are its Core i3, i5, and i7 series in 8th-generation models, though we are beginning to see the roll-out of 9th-generation chips in gaming laptops and content creation machines. Further down the road, we’re also starting to see the first 10th-generation Ice Lake CPUs coming in new laptop designs. AMD’s latest chips are its third-generation mobile Ryzen CPUs, though they are a bit more difficult to find in laptop offerings.

When it comes to picking a laptop based on its CPU, newer is almost always better. Try to avoid buying a laptop with a CPU that’s a few generations old. Unless you’re doing something intensive like video editing, don’t worry about buying a chip outside of the midrange. The four cores available in the Core i5-8565U, for example, is a good place to start for most people.


A graphics chip generates the images that a program needs to display on the screen. With most laptops, its graphics chip will come integrated into the motherboard. Unlike with a desktop, it’s very rare and difficult to upgrade a laptop’s graphics, so it’s important to buy what you need at the start.

NVIDIA and AMD are the primary vendors for discrete mobile graphics. NVIDIA’s latest series is the RTX 20-series, including the RTX 2060, 2070, and 2080 — with some Max-Q versions which are cooler and quieter. These will be in the most expensive, most powerful gaming and business-class laptops, though some recent models may be using the slightly older 10-series or the GTX 1080, 1070, and 1060.


AMD’s offerings are a little different, in that the Vega chips tend to come bundled with a CPU in what AMD calls an accelerated processing unit, or APU. There’s also a growing number of options out there with an Intel CPU combined with AMD Vega graphics core on a single chip. They can be impressively powerful and are worth considering if you find a laptop sporting that hardware at the right price.

There are also rumors of an upcoming RX 5500M mobile GPU which could be far more capable. One to watch ahead of the holiday season.



Although there are some laptops that offer adequate sound right out of the box, such as the MacBook Pro, most laptops don’t have the room to fit decent speakers inside the casing. Most laptops provide ports to connect headphones or external speakers if you want a more immersive listening experience.

RAM, often referred to as memory, refers to the computer’s ability to store and access information for immediate use. Any task currently being done on a computer is using RAM. Essentially, the more RAM a computer has, the more information it can call up at any given time, and thus the more things it can do at any time.


How much RAM do you need? 8GB is the sweet spot for most. You’ll want to jump up to 16GB or more, though, if you’re running intensive applications or doing any kind of content creation.The amount of storage space on a laptop’s internal drives is how much data it can hold in total. Programs, videos, music: All of these are stored on an internal drive, or in more budget laptops, “flash memory” — the same kind of long-term storage your smartphone has. In contrast to RAM, data in storage does not necessarily need to be in use. A program that is installed on the computer but not currently running would take up storage space but not memory. These days, many laptops use solid state drives — aka SSDs — which are faster and sturdier than traditional hard drives at the expense of storage space.


An SSD offers a dramatic performance boost over a conventional hard drive and can provide the most dramatic improvement in laptop usage when buying a new system. Make sure your next purchase has one. If you need more space, grab a big external drive too.



A few years ago a touchscreen was a novelty only found on high-end laptops, mostly because the hardware and software simple weren’t mature enough to make them useful for most people. But with the explosion of smartphone and tablet users, Microsoft, Google, and laptop makers have made a huge effort to create a quality touchscreen experience. Macs utilize fast hardware, too, so those who want a solid computer but do not know a lot about hardware can rest easy knowing their Mac will perform well during everyday use. That said, they don’t tend to sport the most powerful graphics chips, and tend to have a much higher price tag than their Windows and Chrome OS counterparts, especially when configured with lots of storage. In many ways, Apple’s strict design standards mean that its products are easy for anyone to pick up and use, regardless of a person’s skill level or familiarity with computers. Furthermore, Apple only sells a few different models of MacBook at any given time and irregular hardware refreshes mean that they aren’t always the most up to date.


Apple recently simplified its MacBook lineup, removing both the 12-inch MacBook and the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro. That leaves you with just two options: The MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro, both of which got small upgrades in 2019. Google’s Chrome OS is a little different from the other two main offerings. It powers “Chromebook” laptops and is based on Google’s Chrome browser. That means that it can’t run desktop applications as the other two platforms can. That’s great if you’re the kind of PC user who only needs a laptop to read emails, watch Netflix, and occasionally play the odd mobile game. It’s not so great if you want the full functionality offered by a desktop platform.


That said, Chrome OS is quick and more versatile today than it’s ever been, with support for thousands of Chrome extensions and a plethora of Android apps — though they don’t always scale well with larger laptop displays. Hardware choices are also much more varied today than they’ve been in the past, with powerful offerings, like Google’s own Pixelbook, which perform and look very much like premium Windows and MacOS laptops. There are even 2-in-1 options like the Pixel Slate or HP Chromebook x2.



Chrome OS is certainly a less capable platform than Windows and MacOS, but if it fits the bill for what you want to do on your laptop, you can save a lot of money by going with Google’s platform over the other two.


There are several laptop categories, manufactured with a certain use or audience in mind. When shopping for a laptop, decide what you primarily intend to use the laptop for and seek out a category that aligns with those interests. Here are some broad categories and a couple of our favorites for each.


Laptops can be expensive, but by making some cuts many manufacturers produce great laptops that cost $600 or less. Buyers who need a laptop for the most basic purposes (word processing, internet browsing, etc) and want to save money may find that a budget laptop is all they need. Budget laptops are generally light on hardware such as graphics or RAM; do not expect to run AAA games or bounce easily between a hundred browser tabs, but that doesn’t mean they’re incapable.


This is a category where Chromebooks shine by ditching some of the fancier features of Windows and MacOS laptops, but there are options from those two camps. The best budget laptops will still be built to last, with competent construction and ergonomically sensible keyboards and touchpads. In general, entry-level laptops are great for people who may not know a lot about computers and simply want a device that can carry out standard tasks.

This price range is arguably the best in terms of bang for buck. You get much better internal hardware than the entry-level offerings, but you’re not paying a premium for some of the fancy materials used in manufacturing the most expensive of laptops. You have to sacrifice the odd feature and you aren’t going to see a super-powered graphics chip for your money, but the systems at this price range are truly excellent laptops.



The fact that this section is such a sweet spot for the industry means that you have plenty to choose from too. There are laptops with great displays, laptops with powerful processors, beautiful looking laptops, and ones that are light and portable with great battery life. You may not find a system that ticks every one of those boxes, but the best laptops under $1,000 are some of our favorites.

If you want a great gaming laptop in this price bracket, the Dell Gaming G3 is a powerful option, while the ZenBook 13 UX333 remains one of the best laptops under $1,000.


If your pockets are a little deeper, there are few better laptops than those found in the premium bracket. For a little extra money, you gain longer battery life, improved performance from more powerful internal hardware, larger and higher-resolution displays, and overall better build quality. This bracket contains some of the best laptops you can buy today, so if you’re a bit more of a power-user and can afford it, this is the class of laptop you should consider most.


Despite the inflated cost of the premium laptop category, there is still plenty of choice. You can pick up stellar laptops in the 13-inch form with plenty of general computing power and connectivity options. If you’re interested in doing some gaming on the side or content creation, you’ll want to jump up to a 15-inch laptop with a six-core processor and a dedicated graphics card.

The fastest PCs will surpass Macs in terms of performance and many companies tailor their PCs to a specific purpose, such as gaming or business.


PCs typically run Windows as an operating system, which is far more open-ended than MacOS, and updated more frequently. There’s also more software available for Windows. In particular, Windows is the standard for game development and many business-related programs.


Windows-powered devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes. A standard laptop with a clamshell design and a keyboard-mouse interface is easy to find. Touchscreen Windows laptops can be found even in the lower price brackets, and more elaborate designs include fold-back screens or even detachable tablet-keyboard combos, such as Microsoft’s own Surface Book range. Windows laptops also commonly come with touchscreens, which is not something you’ll find on any Apple MacBook offerings — unless you count the Touch Bar.

Apple will tell you exactly what you are getting regardless of which MacBook you purchase, and because all Macs come from the same ecosystem, the company’s resourceful support network can easily help with any problems that arise.



Quality design is one of the hallmarks of a Mac. They are built to look and feel elegant. This extends to Apple’s operating system, MacOS, which is straightforward and intuitive. Macs also come pre-installed with a suite of proprietary software, and each application is well-suited for tasks such as editing video or music.

Another option is to just use your phone. It already has a far better forward-facing camera, and a number of apps that make the connection seamless. The only problem is that the free apps limit resolution — you’ll need to pay to get the full 1080p.

Desktop PCs are great for many things and still enjoy a place in many homes and offices, but no doubt remains that laptops are the standard for what people think of when they hear the word “computer.” In particular, gaming laptops have grown much better over the past decade thanks to mobile hardware advancements, and nowadays, there are many excellent gaming machines to be had for well under a grand.


Whether you’re happy with Windows 10 or you’re a proud MacBook owner, there are always all sorts of laptop deals floating around — but finding a gaming laptop deal presents some unique challenges, as there are additional details to consider (including GPUs and display quality, to name just two major examples). Its vibrant 15.6-inch display has a 1080p resolution (no 720p corner-cutting here, thankfully), and its Ryzen APU is paired with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB solid state drive. At just $380, you’d be hard-pressed to find a cheaper laptop than this that’s still capable of handling some light gaming.


The previous laptop is admittedly pretty bare-bones, so if you’re willing to up your budget (but still want something that slides in under $500), this HP Pavilion 15z is a nice upgrade that will give you a bit more juice for gaming. It packs a Ryzen 7 3700U CPU with Vega 1 graphics — a worthy upgrade over the Ryzen 5 2500U — and you get a full 12GB of RAM, which is even more than the minimum 8GB of memory that we recommend unless you’re going super-cheap.


The HP Pavilion 15z laptop also offers a nice snappy 512GB SSD, and it comes sporting a 15.6-inch 720p display. A $200 discount means you can score this cheap gaming laptop for $570 right now.If the Radeon Vega laptops whetted your appetite but you’re willing to shell out a little more for a faster CPU and discrete GPU, then the Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop offers some nice upgrades for the money. It runs on a ninth-generation Intel Core i5-9300H CPU along with a GTX 1650 GPU, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, and a generously sized 512GB SSD.


Its 1080p Full HD display sits at a nice big size for gaming at 17.3 inches, and like other gaming laptops, the Acer Nitro 5 also features a backlit keyboard. This gaming laptop would normally set you back $880, but a $100 savings cuts it down to $780.


Every gamer knows you’re going to pay more for a dedicated graphics card — even in a cheap gaming laptop with an entry-level GPU — but if you want to enjoy playing modern games at good settings, the juice is worth the squeeze. This 15-inch MSI Alpha 15 is one of the best mid-range AMD-powered gaming laptops out there with a discrete video card: It pairs an Ryzen 7 3750H CPU with a Radeon RX 5500M GPU, which are very solid specs for a 1080p gaming rig.



The MSI Alpha 15 also features 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a 15.6-inch 1080p 120Hz display, and its rugged design isn’t overly bulky and gives you a nice RGB backlit keyboard for those late-night play sessions. A $200 discount (after a $100 rebate card) knocks this gaming laptop down to $799, making it one of the better mid-range picks out there at the moment for a cheap gaming laptop boasting a proper GPU.

Nach einigen Tagen erweist sich das Smart Display als ganz praktischer Alltagsbegleiter. Die meisten Kommandos versteht es gut, so lange man sie einfach hält. Wetter abrufen, eine Karte von Budapest anzeigen, das Licht anschalten – alles kein Problem. Wer die Zeit investiert, kann mit dem Google Assistant auch zahlreiche Routinen anlegen und das Smart Display zur Zentrale im vernetzten Heim machen. Dann werden etwa kompatible Thermostate für die Heizung geschaltet – oder das Licht geht aus, wenn man die Wohnung verlässt.


Auch Videotelefonate sind über Google Duo möglich. Dazu lässt sich das Smart Display auch hochkant hinstellen, falls die Gegenseite ein Mobiltelefon nutzt. Wer nicht ständig im Blick der Kamera sein will, schiebt einfach den Sichtschutz vor. Auch einen mechanischen Schalter gibt es, der Lenovo zufolge die Mikrofone deaktivieren kann.


Und taugt das Smart Display nun als Kochhilfe? Die schnelle Antwort: Ja, mit Einschränkungen. Auf das Kommando "Hey Google, zeig mir ein Rezept für Lasagne." gibt es zahlreiche Ergebnisse. Auch andere Rezepte sind vorhanden. Zu speziell sollte es aber nicht sein. Während es einige Speisen in vielen Varianten und von vielen Seiten gibt, landet man bei anderen immer nur bei Chefkoch.de.


Schritt für Schritt kochen

Die Anleitungen selbst sind praktisch in einzelne Schritte mit Rezeptübersicht und Zutatenliste gehalten. Per Sprachkommando oder Fingertipp geht es zum nächsten Schritt. Wie erfolgreich das Kochen verläuft, hängt aber weniger vom Lenovo-Gerät selbst ab, als von der Qualität des Rezepts und dem Talent des jeweiligen Kochs. Jedenfalls sind die Rezepte meistens ansehnlich aufbereitet und gut gegliedert.


Es bleibt allerdings ein komisches Gefühl, etliche Male mit "nächster Schritt", "nächste Zutat" oder – weil die Pause zu lang war – mit "Hey Google, nächste Zutat" voran zu kommen. Nach einer gewissen Zeit nerven die Kommandos und man fängt unweigerlich an, den Touchscreen zu nutzen. Schmutzige Finger und Soßenspritzer bringen den digitalen Küchenhelfer übrigens nicht aus der Ruhe. Mit einem feuchten Lappen lassen sich alle Kochspuren gut beseitigen. Praktisch: Per Sprachkommando lassen sich mit dem Smart Display auch mehrere Timer stellen. So behält man den Überblick, was wann vom Herd oder aus dem Ofen muss.



Die digitale Harmonie in der Küche hat aber Grenzen: Der Umgang mit dem Google Assistant ist nach wie vor stellenweise frustrierend. Weicht man von den eng gefassten Befehlen ab, geht häufig etwas schief – und man muss den Befehl umständlich wiederholen oder neu formulieren. Sehr häufig werden auch Befehle falsch verstanden und es landen völlig unerwünschte Youtube-Videos auf dem Display – das meiste davon ist völliger Schrott. Nervig. Manchmal aktiviert sich das Smart Display auch unerwartet, während der Fernseher läuft und quatscht unpassend dazwischen. Die schöne neue Welt ist an manchen Stellen einfach noch nicht so weit.


Gelungener Gegenentwurf zu Echo-Produkten

Fazit: Soll der alte Küchenfernseher ohnehin zum Recycling, kann so ein Smart Display ein guter Ersatz sein. Videos, Radio, Streaming, einfache Internetrecherche – alles kein Problem. Wer gern nach Rezepten kocht, dem hilft das Gerät mit etwas Übung tatsächlich gut weiter. Wunder sollte aber niemand erwarten. Auch der Google Assistant macht aus untalentierten Löffelschwenkern keine Sterneköche.



Alles in allem ist das Smart Tablet ein gelungener Gegenentwurf zu Amazons Echo-Produkten mit Sprachassistentin Alexa. Man braucht für viele der angebotenen Funktionen allerdings kein eigenes Gerät. Etliche Funktionen des Google Assistant können auch vom Smartphone oder Tablet abgerufen werden – im Zubehörhandel gibt es dafür praktische Aufsteller. Hinzu kommen Stromkosten. Das Gerät läuft ständig und braucht pro Woche gut eine Kilowattstunde Strom.

Updates werden ohne Probleme eingespielt und auch sonst harmoniert das System perfekt mit allen externen Geräten wie Festplatten, Smartphone etc.


Windows 10 ist extrem Speicherhungrig da kommen andere Betriebssysteme wie Linux wunderbar damit klar das diese weniger Swapspeicher brauchen als Windowssysteme. Windwos braucht deshalb soviel weil immer wieder Anwendungen die zwar gestartet wurden aber momentan nicht vorrang beim User haben werden auf die Festplatte ausgelagert. Aber das hin- und herschaufeln der Daten braucht auch seine Zeit und geht irgend wann an die Substanz der Festplatte.bzw. des Speichermediums SSD. Die haben alle nicht das ewige Leben. Das ist Windows Hausgemachte obsolenz der Festplatten bzw. SSD Medien. Je weniger Schreib und Lesezyklen durchgeführt werden müssen um so länger bleibt das Speichermedium in takt. Das gilt übrigens auch für SD-Speichermedien besonders wenn man auf diesen Wetterdaten und änliches logt. Da sind schnell 200. - 800.000 Schreib/Lesezyklen erreicht. Das Ende des Speichemediums ist da.


Das ist peinlich. Überhaupt ist die Art und Weise, wie Windows Laufwerke zuordnet ein Ärgernis, dass doch gar nicht mehr in die Zeit passt. Windows 10-Nutzer müssen künftig doch nicht auf das beliebte Malprogramm "MS Paint" verzichten. Wie das Tech-Magazin "The Verge" berichtet, soll die Kult-Software auch in der nächsten Windows 10-Version enthalten sein. Zumindest bis auf weiteres, wie Microsoft-Programmierer Brandon LeBlanc auf Twitter mitteilte.


Ursprünglich sollte das Programm unter kommenden Windows 10-Versionen durch das modernere "Paint 3D" abgelöst werden. Microsoft bereitet die Umstellung bereits seit Monaten vor. Nachdem jedoch zahlreiche Nutzer ihr Bedauern über das drohende Ende von "MS Paint" ausgedrückte hatten, ruderte der Software-Konzern zurück und versprach, die Kult-Software weiterhin kostenlos in seinem Microsoft Store zum Download anzubieten.


Der Umweg über den App Store bleibt den Fans aber nun doch erspart: "MS Paint" wird auch weiterhin als ein vorinstalliertes Standardprogramm unter Windows 10 ausgeliefert – parallel zu "Paint 3D". Unklar ist, wie lange der Konzern noch an den zwei Grafikprogrammen festhalten will, obwohl sie ähnliche Funktionen bieten. Auch woher der erneute Sinneswandel kommt, verriet Microsoft nicht.

Fans der Software begrüßten die Entscheidung jedenfalls. Viele verbinden Kindheitserinnerungen mit der mehr als 30 Jahre alten Software, die früher "Paintbrush" hieß. Manch einer nutzt sie heute noch, um Screenshots zwischenzuspeichern oder zu bearbeiten und um Bilddateien umzuwandeln.



Aldi Süd bringt Ende April zwei neue Notebooks von Medion in seine Filialen. Mit ihrem Alu-Gehäuse und einem großen 17,3-Zoll-Bildschirm machen die Geräte einen guten ersten Eindruck. Doch was steckt drin? Ein Schnellcheck.

Portable chargers: Maybe you have a portable charger with an old USB connection, but a phone that only has a USB-C connection (which is not compatible with older USB ports). You can link the charger to a laptop that has both types of ports, and use it to power up your phone in a roundabout way. Do not try to use your laptop Type C charger to charge your phone directly, not yet. The voltage requirements are too different for most devices currently available, and multi-device chargers are still a nascent part of the market.


Power stations: Stations like the DeX Station from Samsung allow you to connect screens with Samsung phones for greater usability and switching between tasks. The DeX Station includes USB-C connections for charging the latest Samsung phones, along with other ports for connecting various accessories. This “something for everything” approach is popular right now as USB connections enter a complicated phase.


There’s a variant of USB-C that’s a lot more powerful — Thunderbolt 3. Choose a laptop with at least one Thunderbolt 3-enabled USB-C port and you can connect multiple 4K monitors at 60Hz and greatly increase your laptop’s gaming performance via an external GPU enclosure.

Thunderbolt 3 allows for a number of charging arrangements: It can “chain” up to six different devices together and easily charge while transmitting data — at higher speeds than USB-C alone, up to 100W.


Since Thunderbolt 3 uses the same connection as USB-C, manufacturers are quick to label laptop ports if they also have Thunderbolt 3 technology: You can usually tell just by reading their descriptions. However, Thunderbolt 3 connections only work if you use the right cables, so make sure you have Thunderbolt 3 cables if that’s what your ports are.


The future of USB-C charging

There’s a brand-new version of USB on its way that will be even faster and provide even more standardization. Dubbed USB4, we can expect laptops with the new ports to start arriving in 2020 or so. USB4 adds another layer of complexity to the whole USB protocol issue, but here are important points to note:

As if there wasn’t enough headphones news right now, Microsoft may be close to launching its second-generation Surface Headphones.

Thanks to a Bluetooth SIG listing that was first caught by 911 Mobiles, a new version of Microsoft’s over-ear headphones is in the works. The Surface Headphones 2 will have 20 hours of battery life, Bluetooth 5.0 technology built-in, and support for audio codecs like aptX.

There aren’t a ton of other details available in the listing. The design description of the product notes that dial buttons will be able to choose between three different noise cancellation settings and voice assistant integration with the tap of a dial. Beyond that, we don’t know a lot about these new headphones.


The information we currently have, however, is a sign that Microsoft is moving in the right direction. In our review of the original Microsoft Surface Headphones, we had issues with poor battery life from the cans, as well as a lack of aptX support. We found them to be easy to use, but their features left a lot to be desired.


It seems like Microsoft may have listened, at least to an extent. An estimated 20 hours of battery life is better, though it doesn’t compete with the Sony WH-1000XM3 in terms of playback time. We also found the accompanying app to be incredibly flawed, so here’s hoping Microsoft reworked that aspect of the ensemble, too.



We don’t know the price of the second edition Surface Headphones, or when they’ll be set to launch. As soon as we find out, we’ll be sure to update you.

A new leak has provided some insight into why Microsoft’s Surface lineup doesn’t feature Thunderbolt 3 ports. The reasoning comes down to security concerns, according to an internal Surface engineering webinar posted by Walking Cat on Twitter.


Per the employee speaking in the video, Microsoft’s Surface lineup doesn’t feature Intel’s Thunderbolt technology because “that’s indirect memory access.” The vulnerability to a direct memory access attack has always been present with Thunderbolt technology, but Microsoft remains the only manufacturer refusing to use it.

“The most important thing in this work is that we demonstrate that there are many advantages for electronics and robotics to power themselves by extracting energy from materials in their environment,” James Pikul, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, told Digital Trends. “This approach is similar to the way we humans get energy. We have to eat fuel, breathe oxygen, and drink water. Our device enables the same capability for robots, except they ‘eat’ metal as a fuel, breathe oxygen, and drink water.”


Right now, the team’s prototype doesn’t resemble the form it could eventually take. It is currently a small hydrogel dragged behind a miniature motorized vehicle. With the hydrogel acting as an electrolyte, any metal surface that it comes into contact with acts as the anode of a battery. This lets electrons flow to the cathode and power the connected device. Different metals give the “metal-air scavenger” different energy densities, depending on their individual potential for oxidation. The vehicle also has a small reservoir that provides water to the hydrogel to stop it drying out.


“The ultimate goal is to make robots that can operate for considerably longer periods of time,” Pikul said. “There are some really impressive robots that people are making, especially at the centimeter scale, that have the potential to improve search and rescue, medical treatments, and industrial maintenance. But with today’s lithium-ion batteries they only last for five minutes. At the rate of current lithium-ion battery progress, it will be 16 years before they operate for 15 minutes.”


This approach would mean a robot could recharge by consuming part of a metal surface any time they were close to one (a small robot would need only the top 100 micrometers of a metal object to do so; a larger robot presumably a fair bit more.)

Nothing has changed when it comes to screen quality, and that’s a good thing. The Surface Pro 7’s 12.3-inch (2,736 x 1,824 pixels) screen is as stunning as the Surface Go’s and Surface Book 2’s — one of the best screens you can find on a 2-in-1 system. Further, for a laptop of this size, the front-facing speakers can easily fill a room with music and provide adequate audio for watching movies.


Microsoft touts the Surface Pro 7 as a true laptop replacement, and it definitely has the processing power to back that up. Even this unit’s entry-level Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB RAM make it a multitasking beast, although we admit its G4-level Iris Plus graphics chipset doesn’t make it not much of a gaming machine.


Shockingly, the Surface Pro 7 did not inherit the best thing that has happened to the Surface Pro 6: Its stellar battery life. Although it was able to last a respectable 8.5 hours in our web browsing test, this is an hour shorter than its predecessor. You’ll definitely be able to squeeze out a full day of work with it. When Microsoft unveiled the original Surface Book in 2015, we all let out a collective gasp and marveled at this machine from the future. Watching the display tear off to become a usable tablet with active pen support felt like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. Now on its second iteration, the company did not dare change the Surface Book’s design for one simple reason: It’s just that good.


Available in 13.5- and 15-inch versions (this deal’s unit is the former), the Surface Book 2’s magnesium chassis is built like a tank. The only other machine that compares to its rock-solid build construction is Apple’s MacBook, although that device’s design isn’t nearly as daring or innovative. It’s also worth noting that the Surface Book 2’s main PC component, the tablet, is completely fanless, which results in a very serious case of coil whine. The amount of electronic buzzing, fritzing, and whirring can be quite maddening, so keep that in mind in case you decide to buy this. Oh, it also doesn’t offer much in terms of connectivity, with a serious lack of a Thunderbolt 3 port. For a $1,000 laptop, that’s going to give some buyers pause.



As expected, you’re getting a typically superb Surface display with this device. The Surface Book 2 retains the same 3,000 x 2,000 (267 PPI) Panasonic panel, resulting in high contrasts, intense luminosity, and vivid colors. Of course, like all Surface machines, it has a 3:2 aspect ratio that’s great for productivity (but with some video letterboxing). The same goes for the detachable keyboard, which has only been changed ever so slightly, retaining its predecessor’s crisp, precise action that’s consistent across all of the keys. The only complaint we’ve got is that it is a bit noisy. The touchpad is even better, with a beautiful glass surface and flawless support of the Windows Precision Touchpad protocol.


This Surface Book 2 runs on an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD, offering a huge boost in both performance and efficiency, especially compared to the Surface Go and Surface Pro 7. What’s more, Microsoft has incorporated a power slider into Windows 10 that has a real impact on performance. Choosing between “Recommended,” “Better Performance,” and “Best Performance” allows the Surface Book 2 to effectively sip on power at varying degrees while remaining lightning-fast, which results in outstanding battery life. On our web browsing test, it was able to last over 10 hours and a jaw-dropping 17 hours in our video loop test.The 13.5-inch version of the Microsoft Surface Book 2 normally retails for $1,499, but you can take advantage of Amazon’s $350 discount and get it for $1,149.



The 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 (it also comes in a smaller 13-inch model) is Microsoft’s first flagship portable PC that rocks an AMD Ryzen processor. This collaboration initially had us reeling with excitement, especially since AMD’s recent desktop processors and video cards have given Intel and Nvidia some serious competition. However, besides having incredible hardware and possibly the longest-lasting battery life we’ve seen yet on a laptop, its performance is lacking a bit.

Leichte Alternative

Außerdem hat Asus ein neues ultraleichtes Notebook angekündigt: Das ZenBook S (UX391) mit 13-Zoll-Display, einer Akkulaufzeit von bis zu 14 Stunden und bis zu 16 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher wiegt nur ein Kilogramm. Der Verkauf soll Ende Juni beginnen, das Gerät kostet ab 1.100 Euro.


Neu ist außerdem ein Convertible: das 1,5 Kilo schwere VivoBook Flip (TP412) mit einem Intel-Core-Prozessor der achten Generation und bis zu 16 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher. Das etwa containergroße Datenzentrum auf dem Meeresgrund ist ein Prototyp. Microsoft zufolge kann der etwa zwölf Meter lange weiße Zylinder voller Computer bis zu fünf Jahre lang ohne Wartung Daten speichern und verarbeiten. Sollte allerdings in dieser Zeit etwas kaputtgehen, ist eine Reparatur nicht möglich, wie der Sender BBC erklärte. Das kalte Meerwasser vor den Inseln im Norden Schottlands kühlt das Datenzentrum, dadurch verbrauche es nur wenig Energie, so das Unternehmen.

Die benötigte Energie kommt per Unterseekabel demnach von regionalen erneuerbaren Energiequellen. Genutzt werden Gezeitenturbinen des European Marine Energy Centre, zudem Wind und Solarzellen. Auch konnte das Gerät mindestens 15 Farben darstellen, was besonders für Spiele wichtig war.Nachdem Steve Jobs 1997 nach über zehn Jahren Abwesenheit wieder im Apple Vorstand saß, befand sich sein Unternehmen kurz vor der Pleite: Apple hatte zu viele Produkte, mit zu hohen Preisen, die sich zu schlecht verkauften. Der iMac G3 sollte das ändern und den Konzern retten.


Bis zur Vorstellung des iMac G3 waren die meisten Computer eckige Kästen in meist gräulichen Farben – nichts, womit man angeben konnte. Der iMac war ganz anders. Jobs präsentierte den Allround-Computer 1998. Er bezeichnete ihn als "Rechner für das Internet-Zeitalter": Der iMac G3 hatte bereits ein 56K-Modem eingebaut, mit dem Nutzer das noch junge Internet erkunden konnten.

Um der Nachfrage nach immer leistungsfähigeren und energieeffizienten Chips nachzukommen, geht Intel inzwischen Kooperationen mit Herstellern von Grafik-Chips (GPU) ein. Lange galten diese gegenüber den Computer-Chips (CPU) als Rechenknechte, an die einfache und wiederkehrende Arbeiten ausgelagert werden können. Doch ihre Bedeutung nimmt für moderne Simulationen und Künstliche Intelligenz stetig zu. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat Intel auch seine lange Feindschaft mit AMD aufgegeben und verbaut in seinen neusten Chipsets "Kaby Lake G" für Laptops neben seinen CPUs auch AMDs GPUs "Radeon".


Die Kombi-Einheiten sollen deutlich besser aufeinander abgestimmt sein und auch merklich weniger Energie erfordern. Zuvor hatte Intel schon Technologie des Grafik-Chip-Anbieters Nvidia lizenziert, doch aus den Partnern werden zunehmend Konkurrenten: Mit seinen jüngsten Produkten stößt Nvidia in den Markt für Server und Hochleistungscomputer vor, die traditionelle Domäne von Intel.


Schaut man sich die aktuelle Liste der schnellsten Supercomputer der Welt an, kann man erkennen, wie gut Nvidia sich als Intel-Rivale inzwischen in Stellung gebracht hat. Erstmals seit 25 Jahren lieferten nicht CPUs, sondern GPUs den größten Anteil der Rechenleistung. Der Einzug der Grafik-Chips in die Forschungs-Labors, Universitäten und kommerziellen Datenzentren werde die Landschaft der Supercomputer für immer verändern, schätzt Michael Feldman, Chefredakteur der "Top-500-Liste".


Höchste Zeit für Intel, jetzt selbst verstärkt auf Grafik-Chips zu setzen. Ende letzten Jahres stellte Intel den GPU-Chefarchitekten von AMD, Raja Koduri ein, der kürzlich über Twitter ankündigte, dass Intel bereits bis 2020 einen eigenen diskreten GPU-Chip bauen wolle.



Neben wachsender Konkurrenz aus ganz neuer Richtung könnte Intel – und damit der gesamten PC-Industrie – allerdings noch ganz andere Unbill in nächster Zukunft drohen: Vor rund einem Jahr wurden verheerende Lücken direkt im Design der Prozessoren von Intel, aber auch anderer Anbieter gefunden. Das potenzielle Einfallstor war Jahrzehnte unentdeckt geblieben. Es bietet mit "Spectre" und "Meltdown" eine völlig neue Klasse von Angriffsmöglichkeiten. Dabei wird ein Design-Merkmal der Chips ausgenutzt, das eigentlich die Rechenprozesse beschleunigen soll.


Sicherheitslücken in Intel-Prozessoren

Noch ist es offenbar zu keinen Angriffen gekommen, doch das kann sich jederzeit ändern. Die Hersteller arbeiten seither mit Hochdruck daran, mit Updates und Patches die Lücken zu stopfen – was bislang das Risiko eines Angriffs jedoch nur abgemildert hat. Und: Anfang Mai entdeckten Forscher gleich acht neue Sicherheitslücken nach ähnlichem Strickmuster in Intel-Prozessoren. Wie das IT-Fachmagazin "c't" berichtet, schätzt Intel selbst vier der "Spectre"-Lücken als hoch riskant ein.

Microsoft hat die in Windows 10 enthaltene Taschenrechner-Software überarbeitet. Der Anlass: Bei bestimmten Berechnungen machte das Programm einen kuriosen Fehler. Dieses Update war offenbar nicht nur den Nutzern wichtig: Demnächst kann man mit dem Taschenrechner unter Windows 10 auch Quadratwurzeln von perfekten Quadraten korrekt berechnen lassen.
