Most importantly, my favourite character, Cardassian ‘tailor’ Garak began to claim more airtime, as the show’s writers competed to weave intrigue around him.Classic episodes include the comedic Rules of Acquisition, which introduced the inexplicable game of Tongo to the DS9 universe, and Blood Oath, which saw the return of Klingon warriors Kor, Koloth and Kang from the original 1960s series.Futuristic technology naturally played a big part in the show. DS9 had a well established litany of technobabble to call upon, but innovated as well. We got a portable(ish) hologenerator, a portable Starfleet computer that looked very much like a modern laptop and a Cardassian medical tricorder worn like a glove. Season Three was to prove pivotal for DS9. Suddenly it was the only Trek show on air. TNG had bowed out in a blaze of glory and incoming newbie Star Trek: Voyager wouldn’t clash until episode 11. Unfortunately, backstage pressures were building. The show wasn’t generating the same buzz as TNG, and its preoccupation with Bajoran religion and politics were proving a turn-off. The solution was to step up the threat of the kick-ass, drugged-up Jem‘Hadar, and to draft in the Defiant, the first Federation warship to employ a cloaking device. DS9 found its action mojo, even if it meant flip-flopping on the original premise.Reflecting a wider talent draft from TNG, Jonathan 'Riker' Frakes guested both in front and behind the camera. The fans seemed satisfied. Ratings solidified, averaging twenty points higher than its nearest syndicated competitor, the pneumatic Baywatch. But that didn’t stop the studio demanding yet more shake-ups for Season Four. Enter everyone’s favourite Klingon, Worf. Executive producer Ira Steven Behr recalled: “Of all the TNG characters, probably the one who would fit in the best would be Worf.” The story possibilities were strong. The Federation was no longer on speaking terms with the Klingon Empire, leaving Worf very much out on a limb. His arrival, in the two-part The Way of the Warrior is fondly regarded as one of DS9’s best episodes.Season Four also saw co-stars Siddig and Visitor become an item off camera, necessitating the writers to work Visitor’s pregnancy into the series. My personal season highlight? Little Green Men, in which Quark, Rom and Nog wind up in Roswell, New Mexico…Season Five conveniently corresponded with the 30th anniversary of the franchise, and in celebration DS9 gave us Trials and Tribble-ations, which inventively (and expensively) mashed the cast into the classic TOS Trouble with Tribbles episode, creating a ratings smash in the process.Season Six similarly broke new ground, opening with a six-episode arc that flew in the face of the episodic nature of TV shows of the time. And it wrapped by killing off one of its key characters.
Deep Space Nine was to enter its final season battered in the ratings by a double whammy of Hercules and Xena Warrior Princess. Audience tastes were clearly changing. Still, plot-wise DS9 went out with all phasers firing. The Dominion War came to a fitting conclusion, and the show culminated with a final two-parter that once again returned DS9 to the top of the syndication charts.Once described as the Rodney Dangerfield of the Star Trek universe, because it “didn’t get no respect”, Deep Space Nine may not go down in the history books as the greatest of the TV Treks, but it was consistently the most interesting. I for one wouldn’t say no to a return visit. Apple will reportedly upgrade its Macs this year to include "5G WiFi", a technology that will increase wireless connectivity to speeds "in excess of a gigabit per second," according to Cupertino's purported chip partner, Broadcom.This news comes courtesy of The Next Web, which reports that "[s]ources familiar with Apple's plans" have told them that Apple has "struck a deal" with Broadcom to include that company's 5G WiFi (802.11ac) chips in its 2013 Mac lineup – presumably MacBook Pros, iMacs, and Mac minis, and perhaps even Mac Pros, if Apple remembers that it still offers that beefy tower. Broadcom launched its 5G WiFi line at last January's Consumer Electronics Show. At that time, the company introduced the three-stream, 1.3Gbps BCM4360 for PCIe interfaces, and the two stream, 867Mbps BCM4352 and BCM43526, the former for PCIe and the latter for USB. At launch, Broadcom touted not only the increased speed that the not-yet-ratified 802.11ac specification promises, but also the improved power efficiency and range of the emerging standard.Speaking at a Broadcom event last month, Michael Hurlston, Broadcom SVP and general manager of the company's Mobile and Wireless Group, said, "We see almost every major infrastructure customer – retail routers, even some gateways – has adopted 5G Wi-Fi, across the board: Linksys, Netgear, Belkin, D-Link, Buffalo in Japan. Every single player is using our chipset to do that."Hurlston noted that among companies workng with its speedy, power-miserly, and improved-range chips, "Asus is probably the most notable client that has launched with 5G WiFi technology." However, although that Taiwan-based company's G75VM "Ultimate Fighting Machine" was touted upon its release in the middle of last year to be the first 802.11ac laptop, its specs page on the Asus website lists it as having 802.11 b/g/n.
The G75VM's follow-on G-series compatriot, the G75VX, is listed as having "802.11 b/g/n or 802.11ac." The G75VX reviewed last week by Germany's Netbookcheck.com, however, was equipped with an Atheros AR9485WB-EG 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi chip – but Asus does mention on its website that "Product specifications may differ from country to country."Asus, by the way, introduced an 802.11ac dual-band (2.4GHz/5GHz) RT-AC66U router last June, with a dual-band PCE-AC66 PCI-E adapter and USB-AC53 USB adapter scheduled for release soon.The inclusion of 802.11ac in its Macs might put Apple ahead of other major PC makers, but that will – of course – depend upon when those manufacturers get theirs to market. According to Hurlston, we should see more 802.11ac-equipped clients "hitting around CES if not immediately following CES." That show will be held next week in Las Vegas, so the picture should become more clear by then."Perhaps most significantly," Hurlston said, "is smartphones and tablets, and we expect the first phones and tablets certainly to be in very, very early 2013." If those devices aren't unveiled at CES, he said that "certainly by Mobile World Congress we'll see them on store shelves" – that show will take place February 25 through 28 in Barcelona. It's unlikely that Apple will upgrade its Macs – or, for that matter, its iPads, iPhones, iPod touches, or Apple TVs – by the end of next month. But Cupertino has surprised us with quick product upgrades before; witness the full-size iPad upgrade in October of last year, just seven months after its predecessor shipped in mid-March.Apple launched its most-recent 13-inch and 15-inch non-Retina MacBook Pros in June of last year, and its 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro at the same time. Lenovo today is the leader of the global PC industry” but “rapid rise in the field of competitors should not be underestimated.”To head off those competitors, Yang feels Lenovo needs to recognise that the company's brand plans well in mainstream and low-end products, but that the “Think” brand “is the best brand assets, and only compete in the high-end market with Apple brand.”The company will therefore “need to give full play to the potential of these two brands in their respective market segments, each value to the maximum extent possible. We want to clarify and simplify our brand strategy, let the market positioning of each of the two brands Lenovo and Think more clearly understood, and thus better serve the business expansion.” That strategy will see the creation, as of April 1st, of a new Lenovo Business Group offering “mainstream consumer and commercial desktop computers, laptop and tablet computer business.” This group is also charged with “global expansion” for the company's burgeoning smartphone business, and other connected devices like Smart TVs.The Think Business Group will be “committed to advancing the high-end commercial and consumer business, while continuing to consolidate the core of the global commercial business leadership (especially relational business), another aspects in the field of desktop and notebook computers, to create a high-end consumer brands, let Think respected brand image in the consumer area and in commercial areas.”The Think group will also enjoy “new additional input of enterprise-class business and workstation team,” an addition sure to be noted at HP given the ailing giant last year proclaimed it was still the planet's top PC seller if one counts workstations as part of the PC market. A Think-branded business unit's chance of taking on Apple seem slim. Neither the Lenovo or Think brands made it into Interbrand's list of 2012's top 100 brands. Yang's letter reportedly says Lenovo plans a “'defence + attack' double fist strategy” that will see it “maintaining gains and continue to achieve new breakthroughs” but doesn't mention if a marketing offensive to make Think as cool as iThink is planned.With smartphones and smart TVs the responsibility of the new Lenovo Business unit, perhaps tablet devices – such as the well-received Yoga – and high-end laptops are the vehicles Lenovo hopes will carry it into the homes and offices of the well-heeled. Even that plan, however, seems optimistic given tablet prices are falling and the sweet spot for ultrabooks is falling well below four figures in all western currencies.Lenovo can point to the scoreboard and its $US16bn revenue climb – from $14bn to $30bn in the last year – as evidence it's doing plenty right. Building a brand to rival Apple will need efforts that don't just translate its current success.
What next for the technology executive who saddled his previous employer with a controversial flagship operating system, polarised management and swiftly left under a cloud? Telling others how to build successful products, of course.Former Windows chief Steve Sinofsky has launched himself as a product development expert with a blog titled Learning by Shipping, which he describes as "thoughts and perspectives on product development, management and the process of bringing new products to market".The ex-exec said his website is a continuation of writing and blogging he did while at Microsoft on the development of Office, Windows 7 and Windows 8. The blog's title is similar to the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' quip about artists and shipping products.Sinofsky has already written a whole book on product development strategy, One Strategy: Organization Planning and Decision Making, with Harvard Business School Prof Marco Iansiti.In December the former Microsoftie tweeted he will be teaching at Harvard as an executive in residence while also writing and conducting research. Sinofsky said he won’t go into “the past regarding Microsoft” for his new blog and promised that he “will work to keep posts free of snark and ad hoc criticisms in hopes that the comments and back and forth will be the same”. During his time Sinofsky successfully got the Office and Windows teams shipping code to deadline and helped lift Microsoft out of what he now calls “post-Vista recovery”.However, Sinofsky left the software giant rather suddenly in November, and without adequate explanation, just three weeks after the launch of Windows 8 and its Surface hardware. His rapid exit led to the surprise promotion of underling Julie Larson Green, who now heads the $14bn Windows division.There were rumours of a clash between Sinofsky and Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer, who wrote a brief farewell to his Windows chief in a memo to staff. The normally reserved Sinofsky has denied he was forced out as the result of a failed power play to run other groups inside Microsoft beyond the Windows family.Sinofsky was also a polarising figure who failed to win over fellow executives; his management philosophy led to a reorganisation of Microsoft’s product structure during with a cast of middle-ranking execs were sidelined or forced out.As for Windows 8, Sinofsky has given Microsoft an operating system whose success is far from guaranteed and that, at last count in the fourth quarter of 2012, was not selling in the kinds of numbers Microsoft had hoped for.The new operating system has divided the industry and users in its attempt to marry a touchscreen user interface with the classic mouse-driven Windows design. Meanwhile, its Surface laptop-cum-tablet competes with loyal PC dealers and distribution channel partners who’ve helped drive Windows’ success in the past. I’ve always been strangely fascinated by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Now celebrating its 20th anniversary - amazing how time flies, even when you’re not an agent of the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations - it’s the densest and most mythology-rich of all the Star Trek TV shows. Often ambitious and audacious, it won more battles than it lost and remains a box-set must-own for any card-carrying Starfleet fan. However, it was also paradoxically (at times) the slowest, ugliest SF show on the box.In many ways, DS9 was the anti-TNG. While Star Trek: The Next Generation was shiny, clean and antiseptic - a look exaggerated by JJ Abrams for his lens-flare reboot - DS9 was unapologetically grey and dirty.For this third televised Trek, the show’s producers parked the idea of galactic gallivanting, choosing instead to base their stories on a dilapidated space station at the edge of the Alpha Quadrant. Thanks to a conveniently placed wormhole, aliens would come to DS9 and not vice versa. While series creator Gene Roddenberry famously conceived the original Trek as a SF reworking of vintage western show Wagon Train, Paramount head Brandon Tartikoff declared DS9 more The Rifleman, the story of a man and his son surviving on the wild frontier.
DS9 was to debut during the sixth season of TNG, running in tandem with the hit sequel series before taking up the mantle solo. It needed to offer something different, and expectations were high. After a lacklustre first season, TNG had developed into a firm fan favourite.Co-creator Michael Piller, who along with Rick Berman had steered the Enterprise NCC-1701-D to such great success, felt the best option was a big change in direction: “Coming with the wind at our backs, it really felt as if we had figured out what made Star Trek work, and that we could bring all the vision that Gene Roddenberry had about space and the future to a different kind of franchise. We didn’t want to have another series of shows about space travel.”DS9 certainly looked unlike any Trek before it. There was a sludgy, high contrast realism to life on the space station, emphasised by grotty broadcast quality of the show, which like TNG was being edited on video at the time.The original director of photography Marvin Rush, and production designer Herman Zimmerman, revelled in the shadows offered by the utilitarian, militaristic, alien location. The show was to receive multiple Primetime Emmy nominations for its art direction, as well as award noms for cinematography and production design, from the ASC and Art Directors Guild respectively. Die Bauhöhe des iPhone 6s wird allerdings mit 7,1 Millimeter angegeben, womit es um 0,2 Millimeter dicker wäre als das iPhone 6. Darüber hinaus fehlt dem gezeigten iPhone 6s das leicht hervorstehende Kamaramodul auf der Rückseite, obwohl erst vor kurzem zu lesen war, das kommende Smartphone werde erneut diese Eigenheit besitzen. Die Darstellung im Videos könnten nun also einfach als Versäumnis der Macher des 3D-Modells gewertet werden, oder aber als ein handfestes Indiz dafür, dass Apple diesen kleinen Design-Makel beim kommenden 4,7-Zoll-Modell doch ausmerzen konnte. Das 3D-Modell des iPhone 6s Plus im Video hingegen besitzt weiterhin die hervorstehende Kameralinse und soll inklusive dieser 7,87 Millimeter dick sein. Die Bauhöhe des 5,5-Zoll-Geräts an sich soll sich auf 7,3 Millimeter belaufen, also ebenfalls 0,2 Millimeter mehr als beim bekannten iPhone 6 Plus. All diese Angaben decken sich im Prinzip mit den bisherigen Berichten, die vorhersagten, dass die neuen iPhone-Modelle minimal dicker sein würden als ihre Vorgänger. Grund dafür soll einerseits eine neue, robustere Aluminiumlegierung sein, aus der die Gehäuse gefertigt werden, andererseits die Verwendung von Touchscreens mit Force Touch Technologie.

Nachdem es lange so aussah als würde sich der Internetriese in diesem Jahr tatsächlich auf Smartphones beschränken, gibt es jetzt plötzlich einen Hinweis, der gegenteiliges nahe legt. Einmal mehr ist es ein Eintrag beim Benchmark-Tool Geekbench, der möglicherweise die Existenz eines bislang unbekannten Geräts verrät. Gemäß den von Mobipicker aus Geekbench 3 entnommenen Angaben trägt das kommende Google-Tablet die Bezeichnung Nexus 8. Während des Benchmark-Durchlaufs war auf dem Gerät Android 5.1.1 Lollipop installiert, falls es aber tatsächlich in dieser Form auf den Markt kommt, wird darauf aller Voraussicht nach das neue Android 6.0 Marshmallow laufen.Darüber hinaus lässt sich leider nicht viel mehr aus den Benchmark-Daten herauslesen. So weit der bisherige Informationsstand der Gerüchteküche. Nachdem in der Vergangenheit schon die Datenblätter und ein paar unscharfe Fotos dieser vermutlich Lumia 950 und Lumia 950 XL genannten Geräte durchgesickert waren, hat Evan Blass (@evleaks) nun über Twitter neue Bilder veröffentlicht, die wie offizielle Pressefotos von Microsoft aussehen. Darüber informiert The Verge. Sofern diese Fotos authentisch sind lässt sich das von Microsoft für die neuen Premium-Smartphone gewählte Design darauf bestens erkennen. Das Lumia 950 XL alias Cityman ist laut geleakter Spezifikationen mit einem 5,7 Zoll WQHD-Display das größere der beiden kommenden Microsoft-Flaggschiffe. Es soll mit einer 20-Megapixel-Kamera inklusive Dreifach-LED-Blitz auf der Rückseite aufwarten und sich auf Wunsch auch mit einem Surface Pen (Digitalisierstift) bedienen lassen. Ein besonders Merkmal sollte außerdem die Continuum-Funktion von Windows 10 Mobile sein, durch die sich die Geräte an ein großes Display anschließen und wie ein nahezu vollwertiger PC nutzen lassen. Das kommende Smartphone wartet mit 5 Zoll großem Full-HD-IPS-Display und Chassis mit Metallrahmen auf, wird von einem Octa-Core-Prozessor angetrieben und bietet ordentliche Kamera-Technik sowie einen relativ großen Akku. All das sollen Verbraucher schon bald zu Preisen ab rund 250 Euro bekommen. Aber erst mal alles der Reihe nach. Wie beim Motorola Moto X Play setzt Medion bei seinem neuen Life X5004 laut WinFuture auf ein SoC vom Typ Qualcomm Snapdragon 615. Dieses verfügt über insgesamt acht CPU-Kerne, die mit maximal 1,5 Gigahertz Taktfrequenz rechnen, und integriert ein LTE-Modem. Dem Chipsatz zur Seite stehen scheinbar 2 Gigabyte RAM und ein 2600-mAh-Akku. Daten, Filme, Musik und Apps finden auf 16 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher Platz, der sich auf Wunsch via microSD-Kartenslot zusätzlich erweitern lässt. Eventuell wird es vom X5004 auch Modellvarianten mit mehr RAM und internem Speicher geben, aber verlässliche Infos gibt es diesbezüglich nicht.

Der Preis für das beschriebene Modell mit 2 Gigabyte RAM und 16 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher soll dann bei attraktiven 249 Euro liegen. Interestingly, in addition to just being a super-tiny PC, Chromebits could be useful as digital signs. A business that buys a bunch of Chromebits will be able to control them all from a central point. Google claims that because you can use them ad infinitum, that "less than $100" price point means that the Chromebit is actually cheaper than the cost of printing a new paper sign for every new need. Back in 2012, there was only one Google Chromebook. It was made by Samsung, and it ruled the Amazon charts for a long while (as many individual Chromebooks still do), but it was the only one. Since then, Google has expanded the web-based Chrome operating system (OS) to work on a variety of products, from an expanded range of Chromebook laptops to the Chromebase all-in-one PC to the Chromebox shuttle PC to the Chromebox for Meetings teleconferencing system.Now, Google has identified more itches that it believes Chrome devices can scratch, and on the cheap. Microsoft has committed to making Windows 10 free on small devices, which should pave the way for a lot of inexpensive Windows devices. But Google's relentlesss price-cutting on Chrome devices will help hold Microsoft to that promise.Apple’s likely to unveil the next iteration of iOS very soon, which means it’s just about time for everyone to get excited about everything new, then lament the features that haven’t been added.This process is inevitable, so we might as well start the complaining early. As someone who's recently switched from a Nexus 5 to an iPhone SE, there’s one Android-esque bit I particularly want from a potential iOS 10: a customizable Control Center.For the most part, the Control Center — that little settings menu you swipe up from the bottom of your display — is a good thing. Introduced with iOS 7, it’s made it very easy to access commonly used functions. Three or four button presses become a swipe and a tap. This is something any OS that sells itself on “simplicity” should strive to do. The problem is one that’s not unfamiliar to iPhone owners: a lack of user control.As it stands now, the functions you can access are limited to the handful Apple chooses itself. Als Prozessor kommt der bekannte Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 Quad-Core Chip mit 1,2 GHz zum Einsatz. Ihm zur Seite stehen 512 MB Arbeitsspeicher und ein 8 GB interner Speicher. Letzterer kann mit Hilfe einer MicroSD-Karte aufgerüstet werden. Zusätzlich zum Smartphone gibt es außerdem 7 GB Cloud-Speicher beim Microsoft-Dienst OneDrive oben drauf.Die aktuellen Flaggschiffe im Smartphone-Bereich sind noch mit dem Snapdragon 801 von Qualcomm ausgestattet, besonders in Südkorea gibt es aber auch bereits einige Endgeräte mit dem Snapdragon 805 zu bewundern. Dieser gilt als letzter großer 32-Bit SoC, was für uns Grund genug war, uns den Prozessor einmal näher im Detail anzusehen. Das Modell ist dabei aber nicht für lange Zeit die Spitze des Eisbergs, denn die ersten Geräte mit dem Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 und seiner 64-Bit-Architektur dürften schon in absehbarer Zeit am Horizont auftauchen. Die breite Verfügbarkeit des Octa-Core-Prozessors soll Anfang 2015 erreicht werden, daher ist es zumindest unwahrscheinlich, dass uns noch Ende diesen Jahres erste Smartphones mit dem Snapdragon 810 erreichen könnten. Ausgeschlossen ist aber auch das nicht, wobei die Wahrscheinlichkeit zumindest in Europa als gering einzustufen ist. Ein Eintrag in der Benchmarkdatenbank von AnTuTu zeigt aktuell ein Testgerät mit dem 64-Bit Achtkernprozessor. Zum Einsatz kommt in diesem Modell ein Snapdragon 810 vom Typ MSM8994, welchem satte 4 GB Arbeitsspeicher zur Seite stehen. Das Display des Testmodells löst mit 1.600 x 2.560 Pixel auf und besitzt eine Diagonale von 6,2-Zoll. Android wurde in der Version 4.4.2 KitKat eingesetzt. Man darf am Ende gespannt sein, wie groß der Sprung vom Snapdragon 805 im Vergleich zum kommenden Snapdragon 810 wirklich ausfallen wird. Schließlich müssen auch die Anwendungen entsprechend optimiert sein, um von der 64-Bit-Architektur wirklich profitieren zu können. Der Snapdragon 810 beherbergt vier ARM Cortex A57 und vier ARM Cortex A53 CPUs und unterstützt die native 4K-Auflösung bei Displays. Als GPU wird Qualcomms Adreno 430 zum Einsatz kommen, dieser Chip soll rund 30% mehr Leistung bei 20% weniger Stromaufnahme gegenüber der Adreno 420 im Snapdragon 805 liefern können. Die GPU unterstützt weiterhin OpenGL ES in der Version 3.1.Um genau zu sein war es die US-Handelskette Best Buy, welche die vollständige Produktseite zu der mit Android Wear betriebenen Uhr kurzzeitig online hatte. Daher kann man die dort aufgelisteten Daten durchaus als Quasi-Offiziell betrachten. Trotzdem gab es ein paar neue Fakten zu der SmartWatch des noch im Google-Besitz befindlichen Herstellers, welche für 249 US-Dollar verkauft werden soll.So wird das Display 1,5 Zoll groß sein und auf der Backlit LCD-Technologie basieren anstelle von OLED wie bisher vermutet. Als Speichermedien stehen, unabhängig vom Modell, Festplatten mit einem Fassungsvermögen von 320 bzw. 500 GB zur Verfügung. Außerdem ist ein Multiformat-DVD-Brenner an BordIn jedem Fall kommen die Modelle der Acer Extensa 15-Serie mit einem 15,6 Zoll großen Display auf dem sich eine Auflösung von 1.366 x 768 Bildpunkten darstellen lässt. Unterschiede gibt es bei der Grafikausstattung. Während die günstigen Modelle standardmäßig mit einer Intel HD Graphics ohne eigenen Videospeicher kommen, bietet das Acer Extensa 2510 einen schnelleren Intel HD Graphics 4400-Chip, der ebenfalls prozessorintern verbaut ist. Höhere Ansprüche an die Grafikleistung befriedigt das Acer Extensa 2510G, das mit einer Nvidia Geforce 820M-Grafikkarte kommt, die über ein GB dedizierten Videospeicher verfügt. Als drahtlose Funktechniken haben alle Rechner der Acer Extensa 15-Serie WLAN 802.11b/g/n und Bluetooth 4.0 an Bord. Ein paar kleine Kritikpunkte gab es bei den Modellen zwar, viel Spielraum für Verbesserungen oder gar die Notwendigkeit für ein Upgrade für Besitzer der aktuellen Generation sehen wir allerdings nur bedingt. Ein typisches Upgrade würde die Verwendung von einem Snapdragon 805 anstelle des Snapdragon 801 nahe legen, allerdings deuteten die letzten Gerüchte zumindest beim Xperia Z3 Smartphone nicht darauf hin. In einem offiziellen Dokument von Sony ist nun allerdings ein weiteres Modell aufgetaucht, nämlich das Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Bisher nutzte Sony bei den Kompakt-Varianten stets die volle Hardwarepower des größeren Modells und reduzierte in der Regel lediglich die Bildschirmgröße. Man kann also davon ausgehen, dass Sony mit dem Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact ein sehr leistungsfähiges Tablet mit einer Bildschirmdiagonale von 7- oder 8-Zoll abliefern wird. Es sei denn Motorola entscheidet sich zu einer Veröffentlichung noch vor Android L, welches diesen Herbst zusammen mit dem HTC Volantis aka Nexus 9 und dem Motorola Shamu oder auch Nexus 6 genannt verfügbar sein soll. Eine Folie des Motorola Moto S von Verizon Wireless gibt überdies Rückschlüsse auf die möglichen Audioqualitäten des Smartphones. Zwar ist es keine handfeste Bestätigung, aber als Indiz für Stereo-Lautsprecher auf der Front durchaus brauchbar.Zusätzlich wird vermutet, dass das Motorola Moto S eventuell sogar das erste Smartphone für das Android-Silver-Programm von Google werden könnte. Dabei handelt es sich um fast eine Art Nexus, denn es darf keine Bloatware installiert sein, keine Hersteller-Oberfläche, die Firmware-Updates kommen direkt von Google und auch der Premium-Support soll von Google geleistet werden.Erst mit dem letzten Update hatte sich LG einem unschönen Problem angenommen, bei welchem sich das LG G3 unbemerkt komplett ausgeschaltet hat. Ebenfalls wurden Probleme mit einer zu großen Wärme-Entwicklung der Hardware behoben und die Ausdauer des Gerätes verbessert. Das aktuelle Update bringt erneut Optimierungen für das Energie-Management mit sich und bringt etliche der LG-eigenen Apps in der Firmware des LG G3 auf den aktuellen Stand. Außerdem wird die Doppeltab-Geste zum Einschalten des Gerätes namens KnockON verbessert, wobei der Konzern dabei nicht näher ins Detail geht.

Wie fast immer wird das Firmware-Update über den OTA-Weg in mehreren Wellen verteilt, damit die Update-Server unter dem zu erwartenden Andrang nicht zusammenbrechen.Leider ist es in letzter Zeit immer öfters zu beobachten, dass die Software eines Smartphones wie die des LG G3 erst beim Kunden heranreift. Neben dem eingangs angesprochenen Problem mit dem Ausschalten litt das LG G3 unter anderem an einer schlechten Performance des Systems und Probleme bei der maximalen Helligkeit des Displays. Die Chromebooks sind preiswert, relativ klein, bieten ausreichende Leistung für einfache Ansprüche und sie setzen vor allem verstärkt auf Cloud-Lösungen anstelle von lokalen Speicherlösungen. Microsoft wollte Google in diesem Segment allerdings nicht gänzlich das Feld überlassen. Die HP Stream-Reihe ist dabei eine erste Alternativ-Serie zu den Chromebooks. Diese setzt dabei nicht auf Cloud-Lösungen von Google, sondern stattdessen auf Windows 8.1 und OneDrive von Microsoft. In einem Reparaturhandbuch von HP sind nun die Details zur günstigsten Version des HP Stream für 199 US-Dollar aufgetaucht.Das preiswerteste Modell setzt auf eine SoC-Lösung von AMD, nämlich den A4 Micro-6400T mit vier Kernen und einer Taktrate von 1,0 GHz. Die integrierte GPU Radeon R3 zieht lediglich 4,5 Watt und dürfte so nur sehr eingeschränkt an der Akkukapazität saugen. Das vorliegende Dokument bei MobileGeeks von HP deutet außerdem darauf hin, dass kein aktiver Lüfter zum Einsatz kommen wird. Dies sollte für eine deutlich angenehmere Betriebslautstärke im Alltag sorgen. Angesichts der recht beschaulichen Hardware sollte ein passiver Kühler auch ausreichen, um die Temperaturen in einem guten Rahmen zu halten. Neben der Technik von AMD verbaut HP zwei GB an Arbeitsspeicher, die allerdings fest verlötet sind und nicht durch den Benutzer ausgetauscht oder erweitert werden können. Das kleinste HP Stream wird wahlweise mit 32 oder 64 GB Flashspeicher angeboten werden, hier gibt es also keine Überraschung und man bewegt sich in etwa auf einem Level mit den gängigen Chromebooks. Der Bildschirm des Notebooks weist eine Diagonale 14-Zoll auf und löst mit 1.366 x 768 Pixel auf. Wie man es von Chromebooks kennt, wird die günstigere Variante auch ohne Touchscreen angeboten, teurere Versionen sollten diesen allerdings mit sich bringen. Insgesamt dürfte die verbaute Hardware für einfache Aufgaben genügend Power bieten.
Neben dieser Grundausstattung findet sich auch eine HD-Webcam auf der Front des Notebooks wieder, HP verbaut insgesamt sogar vier Lautsprecher mit Beats Audio-Technologie. Auch die Schnittstellen und sonstige Ausstattung können sich für ein so günstiges Notebook durchaus sehen lassen. Findet sich doch ein WLAN-Modul im Gerät wieder, dass sogar den n-Standard unterstützt. Zubehör lässt sich via Bluetooth 4.0 und zwei USB 2.0, sowie einem USB 3.0-Anschluss reichlich und problemlos verbinden. Wer unterwegs Fotos bearbeiten oder archivieren möchte, der kann den vorhanden SD-Kartenleser dazu nutzen. Ein externes Display lässt sich via HDMI mit dem HP Stream Notebook verbinden. Der Akku weist eine Kapazität von 2.960 mAh auf, mit rund 1,75 kg scheint das HP Stream allerdings kein absolutes Leichtgewicht zu werden. Da der interne Speicherplatz relativ begrenzt ist, können Käufer für zwei Jahre lang kostenlos Microsofts OneDrive-Clouddienst mit einer Kapazität von 100 GB nutzen. Ein Termin und Preis für Europa steht noch nicht fest, man kann allerdings mit rund 200-250 Euro rechnen. Der Aufpreis für ein Modell mit Touchscreen dürfte in etwa 70-100 Euro betragen, wie man es von den entsprechenden Chromebooks her bereits kennt. That computer was underpowered, had very little storage, and had minimal ports. It was light, thin, and beautiful, unlike any laptop anyone had seen at the time, but it was also way too expensive for what you got. As with the new MacBook, the original MacBook Air was a marvelous feat of engineering that most people probably didn't need to buy. Two and a half years later, the MacBook Air was the best laptop in the world. Apple improved everything from the processing power to design to battery life. Today's MacBook Air is even better.I bet we'll be having a similar discussion about the new MacBook in two or three years. It's ahead of its time now, but eliminating ports and going fully wireless in favor of an ultra-portable design will be the new norm. Eventually you will not need to plug a zillion accessories and projectors into your computer. The router and personal cloud features are a little more exciting. Of the two, the router functionality probably works best. There’s an ethernet port on its back, so if you’re staying in a hotel room with just a cabled connection, you can just hook it up here and make it wireless. The device can also act as a bridge for multiple wireless connections at once. And with a little ingenuity, you can use it to get something like a Chromecast working over previously inaccessible networks.As a NAS, the TripMate isn’t quite as robust. The TripMate app you need to use to access your stuff is still a bit clunky, and the device itself doesn’t have any included storage. If you’re willing to fiddle around with it, though, it’s at least possible to hook a hard drive or microSD card up to the device, then stream video or music files you have on it through the cloud. It’s consistent enough to be useful on a long flight or train ride.

Zugleich verdichteten sich die Hinweise, dass die Kalifornier die Vorstellung der neuen Smartphones auch in diesem Jahr wieder im September vornehmen werden. Jetzt gibt es dank BuzzFeed erstmals ein konkretes Datum für die nächste Apple-Keynote. Wie der bekanntlich über sehr gute Kontakte ins Apple-Lager verfügende BuzzFeed-Reporter John Paczkowski schreibt, wird das iPhone-Event höchstwahrscheinlich am 9. September, also einem Mittwoch, über die Bühne gehen.Dass Apple einen Termin im September für die Vorstellung der neuen iPhone-Modelle wählen würde, stand im Grunde schon vor Veröffentlichung des BuzzFeed-Artikels fest. Der 9. September liegt allerdings ein oder zwei Wochen früher als es die meisten Branchenbeobachter erwartet hatten. Neben dem Datum für die iPhone-Präsentation sind aber zwei weitere von Paczkowski genannte Punkte besonders interessant. So soll Apple während der Veranstaltung auch ein neues Apple TV Modell und sogar neue iPads enthüllen. Was die neuen iPhones anbelangt werden wir es in diesem Jahr mit einer sogenannte „S“-Generation zu tun haben. Das bedeutet, Apple wird höchstwahrscheinlich ein iPhone 6s und ein iPhone 6s Plus ankündigen, die im Grunde aussehen wie die derzeit noch aktuellen Topmodelle iPhone 6 und iPhone 6 Plus. Der Gerüchteküche nach werden die beiden kommenden iPhone-Modelle allerdings hinter der Fassade auch einige bedeutende Neuerungen zu bieten haben, zu denen beispielsweise ein Display mit Force Touch Technologie, ein schnellerer A9 Prozessor, 2 Gigabyte RAM und eine deutlich bessere 13-Megapixel-Kamera gehören sollen.Genau wie im Fall der nächsten iPhone-Generation gilt auch die Vorstellung eines neuen Apple TV mittlerweile als offenes Geheimnis. Paczkowski selbst war es, der ein überarbeitetes Modell der Set-Top-Box bereits für die WWDC 2015 Anfang Juni prophezeit hatte. Entsprechende Pläne hatte Apple dann aber offenbar recht kurzfristig noch über Bord geworfen. Wie dem auch sei, im September sollen die Kalifornier endgültig bereit sein, Apple TV wieder ins Rampenlicht zu rücken. Das neue Modell soll eine vollständig überarbeitete Hardware, Siri-Integration und einen speziell auf Inhalte für die Wohnzimmer-Unterhaltung ausgelegten App Store mitbringen sowie eine Fernbedienung, die ein Touchpad besitzt. Ein großes Fragezeichen muss derzeit somit nur hinter den Abschnitt "neue iPads" im BuzzFeed-Artikel gesetzt werden. In den letzten Jahren hatte Apple der iPad-Familie nämlich stets ein separates Event im Oktober spendiert, auf dem auch ein paar Neuigkeiten zu OS X oder zur Mac-Familie angekündigt werden konnten. Falls sich das Unternehmen in diesem Jahr dafür entschieden hat, die Vorstellung neuer iPads nach vorne zu verlegen, könnte dies bedeuten, dass es nichts wirklich Spannendes zu zeigen gibt. Eventuell reagiert Apple auch einfach auf die zuletzt doch rapide abnehmende Tablets-Nachfrage und verzichtet deshalb auf ein zusätzliches iPad-Event im Oktober. All das ist derzeit reine Spekulation. Außerdem ungewiss bleibt, ob es das seit langem durch die Gerüchteküche schwirrende iPad Pro mit 12,9 Zoll Display in diesem Jahr zu sehen geben wird. Insider waren sich diesbezüglich eigentlich schon sicher, aber die jüngsten Meldungen lassen wieder berechtigte Zweifel aufkommen. Nichtsdestotrotz lässt sich kaum bestreiten, dass das iPad Pro mit seinem großen Touchscreen das optimale Gerät wäre, um die neuen Multitasking-Features von iOS 9 richtig gut zur Geltung zu bringen. Warten wir also einfach mal entspannt ab, was Apple da der Weltöffentlichkeit im September präsentieren wird. Vorausgesetzt die Angaben von BuzzFeed stimmen müssen wir uns ja ohnehin nicht mehr lange gedulden.Microsoft hat bei Windows 10 Mobile eine interessante Neuerung für App-Entwickler implementiert, die dafür sorgen sollte, dass Benachrichtigungen von „schlafenden“ Apps auf künftigen Windows Phones zügiger eingehen als dies jetzt unter Windows Phone 8/8.1 häufig der Fall ist.Wie Windows Central informiert, hat Microsoft auf der sogenannten Windows Platform Developer (WPDev) Feedback Webseite verlauten lassen, dass Windows 10 Mobile eine neue Funktionalität enthält, die es Apps erlaubt, die Verwaltung ihres Netzwerk-Sockets (also gewissermaßen ihrer Netzwerk-Features) direkt an das Betriebssystem zu übergeben, sobald sie beendet oder in den Schlafmodus versetzt werden.
Für alle, die es nicht wissen: Auf Windows-Phones laufen Apps de facto nicht im Hintergrund weiter, wenn zum Homescreen oder einer anderen App gewechselt wird, wie es beispielsweise auf Android-Smartphones passiert, sondern werden in einen Schlafmodus versetzt. Das steigert unter anderem die Effizienz des gesamten Betriebssystems und soll auch verhindern, dass Apps im Hintergrund unnötig stark den Akku beanspruchen. Entwickler müssen aufgrund dieser Tatsache aber beispielsweise bei einer Kommunikationsapp spezielle Tricks anwenden (Stichwort: Push-Benachrichtigungen), um sie kurzzeitig aus diesem Schlafmodus aufwachen und frische Daten empfangen zu lassen. Unter Windows Phone 8/8.1 konnte dies leider immer wieder dazu führen, dass neue Benachrichtigungen vor allem von Drittanbieter-Apps leicht oder zum Teil stark verspätet und in seltenen Fällen sogar überhaupt nicht eingingen. Durch die beschriebene Neuerung in Windows 10 Mobile sollen künftig solche ärgerlichen Probleme endlich Geschichte sein. Weil sich das Betriebssystem um die eingehenden Netzwerkverbindungen diverser Apps kümmern kann, sollte unter anderem der stark verzögerte Empfang einer Nachricht über irgendeine Kommunikationsapp nicht mehr vorkommen.Die Fertigstellung von Windows 10 Mobile wird Insiderinformationen nach noch ein paar Wochen in Anspruch nehmen, sollte aber Anfang September abgeschlossen werden. Danach wird das Betriebssystem zunächst von Microsofts an seine Hardware-Partner ausgeliefert und dann vermutlich irgendwann im Oktober oder Anfang November als Update für einige aktuelle Lumia-Modelle verteilt. Davon abgesehen erwartet die Gerüchteküche vom Softwareriesen auch die Markteinführung von zwei neuen Lumia-Flaggschiffen, die alle Funktionen von WIndows 10 Mobile im besten Licht demonstrieren und im Oktober vorgestellt werden sollen. Es gibt schon wieder frische Insider-Infos zum neuen Nexus 5, das Google in diesem Herbst mit Hilfe von LG auf den Markt bringen soll. Einem Bericht der südkoreanischen Publikation Business Korea nach soll Google nicht nur beim Design der Hardware eng mit LG zusammenarbeiten, sondern auch bei der Implementierung wichtiger Features. Hauptaugenmerk soll diesbezüglich auf dem neuen Dienst für kontaktloses Bezahlen Android Pay liegen.Laut dem Artikel aus Südkorea soll das Nexus 5 (2015) von LG im Oktober erscheinen und dann als Aushängeschild sowohl für die gesamte Android-Plattform (dank vorinstalliertem Android M) als auch Android Pay dienen.Googles Bezahldienst Android Pay benötigt ein Mobilgerät mit NFC-Chip und soll ähnlich funktionieren wie Apple Pay oder Samsung Pay. Auch um gegen diese beiden konkurrierende Technologien eine Chance zu haben, hat sich Google laut Business Korea bewusst für die Zusammenarbeit mit LG entschieden. Der südkoreanische Hersteller bietet eine in Europa und den USA gut etablierte Marke mit weitreichenden Vertriebskanälen und vielen Geschäftsbeziehungen. So soll Android Pay auch auf eben diesen Märkten als erstes an den Start gehen.
Ob das zweite angeblich für dieses Jahr geplante Nexus-Gerät, welches von Huawei stammen soll, ebenfalls Android Pay unterstützen wird, ist bislang unklar. Es ist aber wahrscheinlich. Das Huawei-Nexus könnte nach allem was wir bislang gehört haben allerdings deutlich mehr kosten als das neue Nexus 5, weshalb sich Google eventuell in Sachen Verkaufszahlen mehr vom LG-gefertigten Modell verspricht.Den jüngst durchgesickerten technischen Details des Nexus 5 (2015) nach wird das Smartphone ein 5,2 Zoll großes Full-HD-Display, den neuen Qualcomm Snapdragon 620 Prozessor und 4 Gigabyte RAM bieten. Darüber hinaus soll das Gerät wie erwähnt einen Fingerabdrucksensor mitbringen, der von der kommenden Android-Version - derzeit nur als Android M bekannt - nativ unterstützt wird.Apple in der vergangenen Nacht die fünfte Beta sowohl von iOS 9 als auch watchOS 2 für Entwickler veröffentlicht. Darüber hinaus steht ab sofort die dritte sogenannte Public Preview von iOS 9 für alle experimentierfreudigen Nutzer eines halbwegs aktuellen iOS-Geräts zum Download bereit. Die neuen Vorschauversionen sind somit rund zweieinhalb Wochen nach den Developer Previews 4 beziehungsweise der Public Preview 2 erschienen. In diesem Zeitraum hatte sich Apple mehr auf das neue Mac-Betriebssystem OS X 10.11 El Capitan fokussiert, das darin gleich zwei frische Vorschauversionen erhielt. Die iOS 9 Developer Preview 5 sowie die Public Preview 3 sind im Grunde vollkommenden identisch zueinander und bringen unter anderem Veränderungen am Design der iPhone-Tastatur und an der Handoff-Funktion, neue Hintergrundbilder sowie verbesserte Zufallswiedergabe in Apple Music und neue Animationen für CarPlay mit. Davon abgesehen besteht nun endlich die Möglichkeit,ein iPhone oder iPad mit LTE-Modem bei einer instabilen oder sehr schwachen WLAN-Verbindung automatisch ins Mobilfunknetz wechseln zu lassen.Jenseits der Änderungen für iOS 9 hat Apple auch in die watchOS Beta 5 mehrere neue Funktionen implementiert. Beispielsweise kann der Bildschirm der Apple Watch nun 70 statt nur 15 Sekunden lang aktiviert bleiben, über „Quick Play“ lässt sich in der Musik-App schnell und unkompliziert eine Zufallswiedergabe starten und es gibt eine neue Zeitraffer-Uhr mit der Stadt Paris als Hintergrund. Apple will die fertige Fassung von iOS 9 für iPhone, iPad und iPod touch sowie watchOS 2 für die Apple Watch eigenen Angeben nach im Herbst dieses Jahres veröffentlichen. Ein exakter Veröffentlichungstermin steht noch nicht fest, aber es darf damit im September, und zwar während des von der Gerüchteküche für diesen Zeitraum vorhergesagten iPhone-Events, gerechnet werden.Samsungs nächstes Unpacked-Event steht vor der Tür. In genau einer Woche, am 13. August, wird der südkoreanische Elektronikriese diversen Leaks zufolge das Galaxy Note 5 und das Galaxy S6 Edge Plus vorstellen. Wie ein heute von Samsung veröffentlichter Teaser nun aber andeutet, könnte es im Rahmen der Veranstaltung darüber hinaus noch die ein oder andere Überraschung geben.

Nun sind allerdings bereits erste handfeste Details zu Samsungs nächster Flaggschiff-Generation, dem vermeintlichen Galaxy S7, durchgesickert. Den Angaben eines Insiders nach könnten sich die Südkoreaner beim nächsten kommenden Smartphone-Topmodell wieder dem Chiphersteller Qualcomm als Partner zuwenden und dessen nächsten High-End-Prozessor, den Snapdragon 820, verwenden.Wie schon bei früheren Galaxy-S-Generationen dürfte der Snapdragon 820 höchstwahrscheinlich nicht in allen Modellvarianten des Galaxy S7 zum Einsatz kommen, da Samsung in Varianten für den Heimatmarkt Südkorea und andere Teile Asiens traditionell gerne die eigene Prozessor-Familie Exynos in seinen Flaggschiffen verbaut. Nichtsdestotrotz wäre es für Qualcomm ein wichtiger Schritt, um die eigenen Umsätze wieder steigern zu können, nachdem das Jahr 2015 bislang als Reinfall für den US-Chipspezialisten bezeichnet werden muss. Aufgrund von Verzögerungen bei der Auslieferung des derzeitigen High-End-SoCs von Qualcomm, dem Snapdragon 810, sowie - sehr wahrscheinlich - der vielfach bestätigten problematischen Hitzeentwicklung des Chipsatzes hatte sich Samsung schon im Frühjahr 2015 dafür entschieden, bei der Galaxy S6 Familie komplett auf den eigenen Exynos 7420 zu setzen. Für Qualcomm wirkte sich unter anderem diese Entscheidung sehr negativ auf die laufenden Geschäfte aus.Den unbestätigten Angaben des Insiders nach befindet sich Samsung derzeit allerdings erst dabei,den Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 zu evaluieren. Es ist daher noch nicht sicher, ob der Prozessor schlussendlich auch im finalen Produkt stecken wird. Außerdem ist dem geleakten Dokument zu entnehmen, dass Samsung das Galaxy S7 offenbar intern mit dem Codenamen „Jungfrau“ bezeichnet und auch bereits mit den Anpassungsarbeiten der nächsten großen Android-Version -derzeit nur als Android M bekannt -begonnen hat. All diese Infos zusammengenommen und den Zeitpunkt, zu dem sie durchgesickert sind, mit eingerechnet, lassen darauf hoffen, dass wir ein Samsung Galaxy S7 früher sehen könnten als das die meisten Branchenbeobachtet erwarten würden. Nach den ersten Berichten über die nächste Generation von Apples iPad mini vor wenigen Wochen sind nun weitere aussagekräftige Details ans Licht gekommen. Über den Twitter-Account @onleaks wurde ein Video veröffentlicht, in dem ein 3D-Modell des eventuell iPad mini 4 genannten Tablets zu sehen ist, bei dem sich um eine exakte Replikation handeln soll. Neben der Dicke wird das iPad mini 4 laut dem 3D-Modell noch ein äußeres Merkmal des iPad Air 2 erben. So hat Apple offenbar beim kommenden 7,9-Zoll-Tablet den Schalter für die Rotationssperre beziehungsweise Stummschaltung ebenso wegrationalisiert wie beim aktuellen 9,7-Zoll-Modell.Sofern die schon etwas länger im Netz kursieren Spekulationen zum iPad mini 4 korrekt sind, wofür auch die vom Video beschriebenen Details sprechen, wird das kompakte Tablet mit einer im Vergleich zum Vorgänger deutlich verbesserten Kamera und einem vollständig laminierten Display aufwarten. Zu den weiteren Ausstattungsmerkmalen könnten unter anderem ein Prozessor der Apple A8 Familie, bis zu 2 Gigabyte RAM und bis zu 128 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher gehören.Welche Neuerungen sich Apple wirklich für das iPad mini beziehungsweise die gesamte iPad-Line-up in den vergangenen Monaten hat einfallen lassen, könnten wir 2015 schon früher erfahren als in den letzten Jahren. Jüngsten Gerüchten nach sollen die Kalifornier neue iPads bereits am 9, September vorstellen, neben der nächsten iPhone-Generation und einem neuen Apple TV Modell.
Nvidia bereitet derzeit offenbar die Markteinführung einer neuen High-End-Grafikkarte für Notebooks vor. Wie die Kollegen von Notebookcheck unter Berufung auf Insider-Informationen berichten, soll diese GeForce-GPU das aktuelle Topmodell im Mobil-Bereich, die GeForce GTX 980M, klar hinter sich lassen und könnte eventuell sogar die Leistung von zwei GTX 980M im SLI-Verbund erreichen.Bezüglich der offiziellen Bezeichnung von Nvidias neuem Grafikmonster für Notebooks tappt die Gerüchteküche allerdings noch weitgehend im Dunkel. Nachdem die GPU zuvor schon einmal kurz als GTX 990M im Netz auftauchte, spricht Notebookcheck jetzt schlicht und einfach von der GTX 980 für Notebooks. Ob diese Angabe korrekt ist, lässt sich im Augenblick nicht klären, verwunderlich wäre der Name allerdings in mehrerlei Hinsicht. Gewichtigste Gegenargumente sind wohl, dass es eine GTX 980 bereits als Grafik-Lösung für Desktop-PCs gibt und dass Nvidia mit einem solchen Vorgehen gewissermaßen aus heiterem Himmel das gesamte und über Jahre hinweg etablierte Namensschema seiner GPU-Familie über den Haufen werfen würde. Ganz gleich welche offizielle Bezeichnung die Super-GPU für Notebooks nun letztendlich trägt, fest zu stehen scheint, dass sie sehr leistungsstark sein wird und bei Nvidia unter dem Codenamen N16E-GXX entwickelt wurde. Laut den vorliegenden Infos soll die N16E-GXX GPU wie auch die GeForce GTX 980M auf dem GM204-Chip mit Maxwell Architektur basieren, allerdings über eine variabel konfigurierbare TDP (Thermal Design Power) zwischen 100 bis 185(+) Watt verfügen.Auf diese Weise könnten Notebook-Hersteller bei Bedarf besonders voluminöse Gaming-Notebooks mit starkem Kühlsystem entwerfen, in denen die N16E-GXX dann ihre ganze Leistungsfähigkeit entfalten darf. Aufgrund des damit einhergehenden hohen Strombedarfs und der für diese Leistung benötigten Kühlung wird die kommende Notebook-GPU aber höchstwahrscheinlich nur fest verlötet auf dem Mainboard zu bekommen sein. Was die oben erwähnte Leistungsfähigkeit der neuen N16E-GXX GPU im direkten Vergleich mit zwei GTX 980M im SLI-Verbund betrifft, ist vorerst wohl noch Skepsis angebracht. Notebookcheck geht aber davon aus, dass sich die Performance-Werte aufgrund der dynamisch anpassbaren TDP des N16E-GXX zumindest theoretisch - und bei entsprechender Kühlung - erreichen lassen müssten. Die Begründung für diese These: Eine aktuell erhältliche Desktop-Grafikkarte vom Typ GeForce GTX 980 wartet mit einer TDP von 165 Watt auf und erreicht damit rund 76 Prozent der Leistung eines GTX 980M SLI-Gespanns. Bei geeignet hohen Taktraten und damit einhergehend nochmals erhöhter TDP könnte die N16E-GXX also vermutlich die kolportierte Leistung erbringen. Diese Grafik-Performance für den Notebook-Formfaktor wird aber natürlich ihren Preis haben. Vorausgesetzt die Insider-Angaben sind verlässlich sollte die neue N16E-GXX GPU rund das Doppelte einer GTX 980M kosten. In Anbetracht der Preise, die derzeit für Gaming-Notebooks mit GTX 980M verlangt werden, also sicherlich ein kleines Vermögen. Da der Marktstart von Nvidias mobiler Super-GPU Ende September erfolgen soll, werden wir diesbezüglich wohl bald genau Bescheid wissen.Was sich anhand von durchgesickerten Dokumenten schon vor ein paar Wochen abzeichnete hat Intel nun offiziell bestätigt: Die bislang nur für den Einsatz in Desktop-PCs, Workstations und Server konzipierte Prozessor-Familie Xeon wird demnächst auch ihren Weg in Notebooks finden. Die erste Xeon-Reihe für Laptops trägt die Bezeichnung Xeon E3-1500M v5, basiert auf der brandneuen Skylake-Mikroarchitektur und soll ab Herbst 2015 in ersten im Handel erhältlichen Geräten zum Einsatz kommen.
Um den professionellen Ansprüchen zu genügen, die Kunden an Prozessoren der Xeon-Familie stellen, soll natürlich auch die neue Xeon-Reihe E3-1500M für Notebooks hohe Performance und High-End-Funktionen bieten, allerdings zugeschnitten auf den Einsatz in einem von Energieeffizienz bestimmten Umfeld. So unterstützten die CPUs beispielsweise ECC-Arbeitsspeicher und die Intel vPro Technologie. Darüber hinaus bringt Intels kommende professionelle Mobil-Plattform neue Features wie Thunderbolt 3 oder USB Typ-C mit und wer das möchte, der kann allein mit der integrierten GPU der Prozessoren zwei 4K-Displays gleichzeitig befeuern.Intel hält sich derzeit noch bedeckt, was die genauen technischen Details und weitere Features der neuen Xeon E3-1500M Prozessoren für Notebooks betrifft. Das ist sicherlich dem Umstand geschuldet, dass das Unternehmen im Moment ganz allgemein noch nicht über die Mobil-Prozessoren der Skylake-Generation spricht. Vor wenigen Tagen wurden aber schon mal die ersten beiden Desktop-CPUs der nunmehr sechsten Core-Generation auf dem Markt eingeführt. Wie oben schon kurz erwähnt, sollen diverse Skylake-Modelle für den Notebook-Markt im Herbst dieses Jahres folgen. Die Entscheidung Intels, Xeon-Prozessoren für Notebooks herauszubringen, begründet sich vor allem durch die zunehmende Popularität von Mobil-Workstations. Der Chipgigant gibt in seiner Pressemitteilung an, dass der Markt für Mobil-Workstations laut den Marktforschern von IDC auch im vergangenen Quartal wieder im Vergleich zum entsprechenden Vorjahresquartal gewachsen ist. Somit ist dieses Marktsegment eines der wenigen, in dem die Absatzzahlen von Windows-PCs über mehrere Quartale hinweg nicht ab-, sondern zunahmen. Für Intel macht es also Sinn, verstärkt auf CPUs für Profis im Kreativbereich oder Ingenieurswesen zu setzen, die von Zuhause aus oder unterwegs ihre Arbeit erledigen wollen beziehungsweise müssen.

At that IDF event, Skaugen reminded us, Intel had promised that with its 4th Generation Core processor line, code-named "Haswell" and scheduled to appear later this year, that power requirements would dip to 10 watts. Voilà – you have a 10-millimeter, 850-gram, Core i5 or i7 tablet with what he claimed would provide up to 10 hours of battery life.Much ink has been spilled in the past year about Intel being late – too late, some have said – into the low-power processor market. And those ink-spillers have been correct: it's been a long, tortured path for Intel as it has struggled to get its processors anywhere near in line with the lower-performing but decidedly more power-miserly ARM-based processors from world+dog.
Whether the company's focus on touch-enabled convertible and detachable Ultrabooks will induce enough OEMs – to say nothing of users – to adopt first the new seven-watt 3rd Generation Core processors then the 4th Generation Core Haswell processors later this year remains to be seen. Also uncertain is whether the neither-fish-nor-fowl convertibles and detachables will find market-share love.But to be fair, you gotta give Intel engineers an "A" for effort – even as you give the company's executive team an "F" for vision. This 24in model offers hidden illuminated touch-sensitive controls and sleek edge-to-edge glass, lending it the appearance of a giant iPad floating in mid-air. Internally, it features an MVA panel which delivers wide viewing angles and accurate colour. It has no speakers, but there’s an audio output so you can pass sound from the HDMI input through to an external set. The high-gloss screen is more about looks than day-to-day productivity, but if you can keep reflections at bay you’ll enjoy some really deep blacks and punchy contrast. Ramstein isn't happy with that solution, either. "Have you ever tried the keyboard?" he asked his audience. "Beautiful technology, but I don't feel anything when I press the buttons."The solution, Ramstein said, is an exceptionally thin keyboard that still manages to provide feedback to the fingers that touch it. And – suprise – that's what Strategic Polymers has developed and which he showed to his audience: the Awake haptic keyboard.The Awake is a 1.5 millimeter–thick Bluetooth keyboard, with each key being an individual EMP unit capable of providing haptic feedback when touched. Being a first-generation prototype, the Awake doesn't take advantage of the EMP units' ability to deform – to rise up and push back when touched. Instead, each key merely provides vibration as feedback when pressed.To Ramstein, though, even mere vibration is a vast improvement over, say, the Microsoft Surface keyboard, which just lies there pretty but inert. "Lovely, but I don't feel anything," he said of Redmond's inability to thrill his fingertips. The EMP units that Strategic Polymers has created for the Awake keyboard and other prototypes are versatile li'l items. Not only can they provide vibration as feedback, but they can also deform by two to three millimeters and provide 30 to 50 grams of blocking force before being depressed, mimicking a physical keyboard. Each unit is around 100 microns thick and weighs less than a tenth of a gram.Each EMP unit can also produce sound – and not just a buzz or click, but music as well. Ramstein demoed a tiny EMP key that, when touched, played a guitar riff. Not exactly thundering bass, as you may imagine, but impressive sound quality to your Reg reporter's ears.In addition to the Awake keyboard, Ramstein demoed another prototype, the Backtouch smartphone. Less ambitious than the Awake, the Backtouch had just two of the EMP units on – where else? – its back. According to Ramstein, though, the addition of a second haptic unit to your smartphone can provide a host of benefits. We say "second" because your smartphone alread has one haptic unit – that resonant or spinning actuator that vibrates your phone when you want to silence its ring. To Ramstein, a slow, bulky, spinning actuator is like an out-of-balance washing machine – a crude device. "When I spend four, six-hundred dollars for a smartphone, I wasn't something more than washing machine in it."When you hold the Backtouch with your fingers on the two EMP units, Ramstein demonstrated, the device can vibrate to provide turn-right, turn-left navigational clues, can be tapped in preset patterns to launch apps without having to look at the screen, or perform other tricks that clever devs might come up with.And Ramstein says his company is ready to start talking with developers and OEMs. "There are clearly opportunities for innovation and new functionality," he said. "We're just telling the world that, hey, the technology is here. Who wants to use it? Who wants to be first to market? Who has the guts to say, 'Let's bring haptics to the next level'?" Dell’s Wyse subsidiary - the thin-client computing pioneer the PC giant acquired in April 2012 - will today show off ‘Project Ophelia’ at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas/ Ophelia is a tiny Android machine that plugs into a monitor or TV to provide “instant” access to its owner’s cloud content, the web and apps running on remote systems.Internet connectivity comes courtesy of on-board Wi-Fi, peripheral linkage through Bluetooth. The doohickey also has a USB port.Ophelia lacks a battery - power comes through its MHL connector, a Micro USB-style jack that also feeds out video signals. MHL supports 1080p video and HDCP content protection. Many TVs and monitors have MHL, and there are plenty of MHL-HDMI adaptors out there too. It’s a technology widely used in HTC, LG and Samsung phones.This being a Wyse device, the gadget is ready to run as a thin-client to tap into applications hosted on servers and desktops running Citrix, Microsoft or VMware.
Dell’s notion is that office drones on the road and folk away from home will want to access their files remotely but don’t necessarily have access to carry a laptop or a tablet around, or need to make use of a large display. It’s pitching Ophelia as a handy-to-stow alternative ready to be hooked up to a big screen, although the user will still need to find a Bluetooth mouse at the very least to be able to operate the gadget.“Project Ophelia transforms ordinary displays into a window to entertainment, communications and a person’s own personal cloud,” puffs the company. “Mobile devices have small screens, tablets and PCs aren’t always convenient to haul around, and all these devices require batteries that can run down.”Ophelia - the go-to-market name is TBD - will be out sometime before July, Dell said. However, current market forces are eating low-end players alive - making the top end a lot more attractive.In the world of mass-market PCs, which Lenovo and pals have called home for so long, sales aren't just falling, the value of what's being sold is too - and profits and margins are being squeezed to their limits. Just last month Gartner had to re-forecast predicted IT spending in 2013 taking $40bn off its initial forecast, because more low-priced devices are entering the market and being bought.The prime culprit is Google's Android, an operating system that comes minus the licensing tag - a fact that means PC- and device-makers get a cost advantage in manufacturing that they can pass on to the consumer.In some ways this helps, as margins are squeezed, but Android is also the cuckoo in the nest, which is eating PC-makers from the inside out on price.Lenovo's answer is to re-organise into two business units to sharpen focus on the high and low end; it is currently re-organising into The Lenovo Business Group and the Think Business Group. Lenovo chairman and chief executive Yang Yuanqing calls this a "defence + attack double fist strategy” that will see Lenovo “maintaining gains and continue to achieve new breakthroughs".The Lenovo Business Group will offer "mainstream consumer and commercial desktop computers, laptop and [a] tablet computer business" and "global expansion" for the Lenovo's smartphone and other connected devices like Smart TVs, which are also starting to run Android.But it's already an aggressive market - this is the market Gartner reckons is being driven down on price, thanks to Android.But the Think Business Group is in with a chance to grab a bit of that high-end loot.
