One way to do this is to work on a project you're passionate about during your personal time and get results. You should enjoy doing it, and you'll have solid evidence to back your offer, Fanning says.A vacation is a great way to take a break from office stress, but there are other ways to get that much needed time off. If you're truly suffering from job burnout, anything that can help is worth trying.Consider using your sick days or asking for a temporary leave of absence, Fanning suggests. Then take that time and completely disconnect from your laptop and cell phone. Use the time away to recharge your batteries and get a new perspective, he says.


Venting to family and friends can help temporarily relieve stress, but it isn't a long-term solution. Plus, they'll likely grow annoyed if it continues to happen. Talking to a wellness or stress coach may help.Oftentimes, a confidential, unbiased third-party perspective with your best interest in mind is just what you need to get into a more helpful mindset and generate a new path forward that works for you, Fanning says.Reports are surfacing that Apple isn't happy with the progress being made on the secretive Apple Car — code-named Project Titan — and that the executive in charge of the effort has left the tech giant.I don't think we should be surprised that the Apple Car is in trouble, if in fact it is — these are just reports, after all, and the real story could be something different.The whole way Apple has gone about developing its foray into mobility has been, in a word, weird.For example, if you figured that Apple was hiring aggressively to bulk up its car team ahead of taking on Tesla, Google, and the traditional auto industry, then the news that the tech giant had hired former Chrysler quality czar Doug Betts last year should have struck you as confusing.


Betts joined Chrysler in 2007, brought on by then-CEO Robert Nardelli, who is now generally regarded as if not exactly responsible for Chrysler's slide into a government bailout and bankruptcy in 2009, then at least for lacking a meaningful vision for the company under its ownership by private-equity firm Cerberus. Prior to Chrysler, Betts was at Nissan.He left Chrysler last year after the automaker, never known for the quality of its cars and trucks relative to its peers, was clobbered by Consumer Reports, with numerous Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles finishing well down the publication's reliability list. At the time, Betts said he was pursuing other interests, but the speculation was that Fiat Chrysler's Fiat 500, relatively newly arrived in the US, was considered such a reliability disgrace by Consumer Reports that Fiat Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne was calling for a head.Although there's been buzz around Apple's hiring of folks who have experience with battery development, electric propulsion, and hybrid drivetrains — not to mention some chatter about a talent war between Apple and Tesla — Apple has yet to bring on a single executive with either a significant electric-vehicle background or a truly major-league auto-industry background.



By which I mean someone who has at least supervised the development of an important vehicle, or who has held a car job that parallels some of the bigger roles at Apple.Mostly, Apple is bringing on relatively obscure people. Betts is something of an exception because he's distinguished, frankly, by not delivering quality products at Chrysler, although he did have a decent track record pre-Cerberus.This contrasts with Google's hire of John Krafcik to run its self-driving car project. Krafcik, who worked at Ford, GM, and Hyundai, is an important figure in the global auto industry, as we noted at the time he made the jump to Google.But maybe Apple doesn't want people coming in with baggage. For example, Tony Posawatz left his CEO gig at Fisker Automotive, a bankrupt Tesla competitor, and moved into a role with an EV advocacy group, according to Autoblog. Prior to Fisker, Posawatz was a longtime General Motors executive who led the development of the Chevrolet Volt hybrid-electric car — one of the few electric-tech vehicles that can give Tesla's cars a run for their money. He knows how to run an electric-car program.


Perhaps he's talked with Apple. But my point is that auto executives at that level aren't currently on the Apple Project Titan roster. Worst case, this means that Apple isn't really all that serious about cars and is simply maintaining an exotic side project to avoid being outrun by Google, which has been developing a driverless car for years, and Tesla, which consistently presents itself as a tech company as much as a car company.It's of course tempting to say that Apple needs to make a big, showy hire to prove that it truly wants to disrupt the auto industry — and that temptation could be exactly what Apple wants to avoid. Sure, Apple hired Johann Jungwirth from Mercedes in 2014, and he was a guy who was supposed to be thinking about the Car of the Future and was based in Silicon Valley. But both are effectively cul-de-sacs — in the US, the industry is based in Detroit and those who rise work on vehicles that can sell over half-a-million units per year.I have the sneaking sense that Apple is really interested in making manageable hires in the auto-industry space, so the Apple leaders who've expressed opinions about cars won't have to be told that they would be nuts to pursue this or that strategy.


One extremely difficult call on that front would be to inform Apple that electric cars aren't actually gaining much ground with consumers, Tesla notwithstanding. It's widely assumed that if Apple is planning to build a car, then that car must be electric. But all the carmakers currently selling EVs see them as a virtuous, largely experimental sideline. In the US market at the moment, big trucks and SUVs are where the action is at, even if GM made a splash at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas with its Bolt EV, now heading for production.Apple, however, can't avoid building an electric car, even if the market doesn't want one. Would you buy an Apple Car that you need to gas up with, you know, gasoline? Would you buy a diesel Apple Car?Apple's legendary secretiveness is an asset here. No one expects to get any clarity on the car project, so it's all just thrilling free media for Cupertino as everyone ponders what the people who gave us the iPhone would do if they tackled the challenge of mobility.


That said, there really isn't a mobility challenge. Apple designer Jony Ive may dislike modern cars — and if reports are accurate, be displeased with what he's seen so far of the Apple Car project — but the bottom line is that most people can get exactly what they want when it comes to personal transportation.The globe's automakers do a fairly good job of providing abundant choice — far more than what people can get when it comes to smartphones and laptops, all of which essentially do the same thing. If I have less then $20,000 to spend, I can buy a Toyota Prius and have a perfectly good mode of affordable, reliable, environmentally friendly transportation. If I have more than a million, I can buy a Ferrari LaFerrari and go from 0-60 in a claimed 2.6 seconds and feel like an astronaut being blasted into space.If you assume that the world is moving inexorably toward autonomous fleets of networked cars that drive themselves, then yes. But Google is already way ahead of Apple with this theory. Tesla has shown that there's a limited market for all-electric luxury cars. But that's not really a massive disruption, just a different choice.



And even if Apple makes a car, who would it be sold to? If you're on your fifth BMW 3-Series and have considered and rejected the Model S for whatever reason, why would you take the leap on an Apple Car? This is the buyer Apple needs to capture, if it hopes to mimic its device profit margins with a car. Otherwise, Apple is doing fleet sales, a low-margin business. Fleet sales, it should be noted, to fleets of driverless cars that don't yet exist.Bottom line: Apple has never done anything resembling a car before, so we should expect there to be some extremely high hurdles for the company to overcome. It's common lore that if your phone doesn't turn on after getting dunked in water, you put it in rice. The logic here is that the rice will soak up the water, and your phone will work again.


But rice can take up to three days to fully dry your phone, and even then it's not guaranteed that it'll work again.A company called TekDry is setting up electronics-drying locations around the United States, where customers with wet gadgets come to dry them for $70 in special machines that literally pull the water out of them in a vacuum chamber. But if your phone doesn't work because the water damage went too far, you won't be charged anything. So far, you'll only find TekDry locations in Colorado, Michigan, and New Hampshire, but they're adding 82 more locations in California, New York, Philadelphia, and the greater Boston area in mid-October. In New York, two locations will be in Brooklyn, two in Manhattan, and two in Bronx.It's actually quite satisfying to watch water ooze out of the sim port and the cracks around this old iPhone:
TekDry's machines can dry phones in 30 minutes with an 80 percent success rate if you bring it under 48 hours of getting your phone wet.Recently, it was discovered that Apple's latest iPhones are much more resistant to water than previous generations. It turns out that Apple added gaskets around the edges and seals around important components into the latest iPhone 6s and 6s Plus to keep water out.


The new iPhones survived a test where they were dunked in a shallow bowl of water for an hour, with only the 6s suffering from a diagonal line across its screen. So you might not need to worry if you drop a new iPhone into, say, a toilet bowl.However, another put the iPhone 6s under four feet of water for a couple minutes, which broke the iPhone from water damage. So if you jump into a pool with your iPhone, you still have a chance of saving it if you bring it to TekDry. (Still: don't do that.)Other phones boast water-resistance, like Sony' flagship line of Xperia phones. But others are doing away with the feature. Samsung, for example, recently did away with the water-resistance in its line of Galaxy smartphones. TekDry also dries other devices, like tablets, laptops up to 13-inches, cameras, and basically anything battery-powered portable device.Luckily, Product Chart has an extensive smartphone comparison chart that tosses all the most recent smartphones into one place. If you have a specific smartphone line in mind, you can also pare down the results by selecting the brand. If you really want to get technical, you can also change up what the X and Y axis measure, swapping out price for resolution, screen size, pixels per inch (PPI), weight, and storage.Each smartphone links to an Amazon product listing for the device, showing how much it would cost to buy the phone unlocked and off contract.Unfortunately, there are no toggles for battery life, carrier, or operating system, and it's always a good idea to see what deals are best for your specific carrier contract. But if you want a good overview of the current smartphone market, Product Chart is an easy way to digest all the options while focusing on the features that matter to you.Nobody needs a tablet. The best of them get close to blending the productivity of a laptop with the portability of a smartphone, but unless you splurge on something like a Surface Pro, they usually end up being weird approximations of the two. If you want to get work done, you’re usually better off with a laptop. If you want to read things on the go, you’re usually better off with a smartphone. (Or at least a big smartphone.)


Instead, most tablets are still best for luxury. They're something for your in-between time, when you’re sitting around and you want a more convenient way of throwing on a Netflix stream, opening up an e-book, or playing a game of Plants vs. Zombies. They’re simpler to start up than laptops, and fitted with bigger screens than smartphones. They don’t replace the two, but they can be convenient sidekicks to both.Still, because a tablet isn’t essential to most people’s lives, it’s totally understandable if you don’t want to overpay for one. Luckily, you don’t have to. Although the highest-quality iPad Airs and Galaxy Tabs cost $400 or more, there are still a handful of worthwhile options in the $200 range. So, per usual, we scoured the web and did some hands-on testing to find them. (With one minor yet worthwhile exception, which we'll explain below.) We also gave them our usual BI Rating.In doing so, we looked for the obvious. You won’t find strong enough performance to get a ton of work done, but in this range, you’re looking for a media machine anyway. The build doesn’t have to be made of high-end metals, but it should feel comfortable and well put-together. You want enough storage space, along with software that, at the very least, doesn’t get between you and your stuff. And of course, you want a good screen — colorful, bright, and, ideally, sharp. With few exceptions, that screen will be around 7 or 8 inches.


With all that out of the way, here are our favorite affordable tablets you can buy today.Update (2/11/16): We've completed our first major refresh of this guide. The Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 is our new top pick among budget Android tablets, while the Amazon Fire gets a mention as an ultra-cheap option. We've also updated our Apple iPad mini 2 entry to further explain why it's been included here.First, we’re going to cheat a bit. If you can pony up an extra $70 to get Apple’s entry-level iPad, it’s the only almost-budget slate that's worth the plunge. The iPad mini 2 is technically the weakest of Apple’s current crop of tablets, but two years into its existence it’s held up well. Its metal-and-glass build is still refined, tightly constructed, and pleasant-feeling in the hand. Its 7.9-inch, 2048x1536 IPS display isn’t as vivid or deep as the world-beating (among non-OLED options) panels of the newer iPad mini 4 or iPad Air 2 — mostly because of its lower maximum color gamut — but it’s still impressively sharp, and it’s still miles more fine-tuned than the vast majority of tablets in the budget range. Compared to those slates, it still comes off like a notably higher-end product.



The main reason we’re breaking our $200 guideline, though, is because the mini 2 runs iOS 9. As we’ve said before, Apple’s mobile OS is far and away the best operating system for tablets. It’s constantly easy to navigate, it doesn’t force the risk of delayed updates, and it recently added split-screen support, giving the mini 2 a measure of multitasking ability in the process.Most importantly, it’s still something of the default among app developers — if a major app (or game) launches or makes a major update, you’re almost guaranteed to see it as soon as it hits, if at all, on an iPad. Android has closed the gap in terms of app quantity over the years, but it still presents that risk, especially when it comes to new games. iOS also has decidedly more apps that are optimized for larger displays. Explore Android far enough and you’ll still see a few too many apps that are either awkwardly laid out or presented like they’re on a blown-up smartphone. That sort of annoyance is rare here.


The only major downsides are that paid apps tend to cost a dollar or two more, and that Apple’s first-party apps are routinely less inviting their counterparts from Google, Microsoft, and the like. Otherwise, we’d say the added convenience is worth a premium. All of this means that, display discrepancy aside, the iPad mini 2 isn’t that far off from the iPad mini 4. The primary concern is that its specs are aging. But while its two-year old A7 chip and 1GB of RAM will never be as robust as Apple’s latest hardware, iOS is still light enough for them to get you through a YouTube binging session or most modern games without much issue. For the general entertainment purposes a small tablet is meant for, it’s fine. Likewise, the mini 2’s battery can’t power up iOS 9 for as long as its successors, but the 8 or so hours of juice it gets per charge is passable.When it comes down to it, the iPad’s position atop the tablet food chain is deserved. Whichever one you pick, you get the most complete user experience, with an excellent display, in a design that looks and feels great. You don’t have to deal with as many compromises.

Vorne weg sollte für alle potentiellen Käufer des LG G5 gleich mal Entwarnung gegeben werden: Das Smartphone besteht keinesfalls teilweise aus Kunststoff. Es gibt aber ein paar interessante Design-Entscheidungen von LG zu berichten. Wie der Hersteller gegenüber PhoneArena erläuterte, befindet sich unter der farbigen Lackierung des Geräts keine Kunststoffschicht, sondern eine mit Metallpartikeln durchsetzte Grundierung, die die Farbe auf dem Aluminium hält. Das Geräte-Chassis selbst besteht aus einem druckgegossenem Aluminium-Unibody für den die Aluminiumlegierung LM201b verwendet wird, die unter anderem auch in der Automobil- und Flugzeugindustrie zum Einsatz kommt.

Durch die Verwendung der Kombination aus Metalllegierung, Grundierung und Farbe hat LG außerdem eine Möglichkeit gefunden, die Antennenstreifen, die um das Gehäuse herumgeführt werden müssen, im Gegensatz zu einigen Konkurrenten am Markt unsichtbar zu halten. Über das taktile Feedback, das der Nutzer beim Anfassen des G5 nun verspürt, kann also zweifellos diskutiert werden, aber zugleich steht außer Frage, dass LG eine respektable Designentscheidung getroffen hat. Die Südkoreaner merken zudem an, dass es schlicht und einfach falsch sei, zu behaupten, das G5 bestehe nicht komplett aus Metall, da dies ja auch nicht von Autos oder Flugzeugen, die farbig angestrichen wurden, behauptet werde.


Ungeachtet der Diskussion um die exakte Beschaffenheit des Gehäuses hat das LG G5 ohnehin noch ganz andere innovative Features zu bieten. So verfügt das Smartphone beispielsweise über einen im aktuellen Smartphone-Markt einzigartigen Magic Slot, der unter anderem dazu genutzt werden kann, den Akku zu wechseln oder aber auch den Funktionsumfang des Smartphones mit unterschiedlichen Modulen zu erweitern.

In Südkorea und den USA ist das LG G5 seit Ende vergangener Woche erhältlich. Im deutschen Handel sollte das Smartphone im Laufe der nächsten zwei Wochen verfügbar sein.

Auch wenn Unternehmen wie Microsoft, Dell oder Lenovo mittlerweile gezeigt haben, dass es auch für die alteingesessenen Spieler im PC-Mark möglich ist, schicke, leichte und hochwertig verarbeitete Notebooks oder 2-in-1-Geräte anzubieten, wird das Design von Apples MacBook-Familie nach wie vor als branchenführend angesehen. Dies will HP nun trotz weiterhin schrumpfender PC-Absatzzahlen und zugleich knallharter Konkurrenzsituation in diesem Geschäftsfeld ändern. Das US-Unternehmen plant in Kürze die Vorstellung einer neuen Notebook-Sensation.


Wenn es nach HPs Chef der PC-Sparte, Ron Coughlin, geht, dann wird HP jetzt das Innovationszepter von Apple übernehmen. So jedenfalls lautet die Kampfansage von Coughlin, die er gegenüber dem Wall Street Journal abgegeben hat. Natürlich klingen diese Worte zunächst einmal sehr gewagt, aber einige aktuelle HP-Produkte wie beispielsweise das auf den Geschäftskundenmarkt fokussierte Elitebook Folio G1 geben ihnen schon mal eine gewisse Nachhaltigkeit. Die neueste Entwicklung HPs, ein geheimnisvolles Notebook das morgen der Weltöffentlichkeit gezeigt werden wird, soll nun da anknüpfen, aber sogar nochmals dünner, fortschrittlicher und eleganter sein als das besagte EliteBook Folio. Auf diesem Weg soll das 12 Zoll Apple MacBook gleich auf mehreren Ebenen ausgestochen werden. Wie sich das neue HP-Notebook aber letztendlich darstellen wird muss für den Augenblick noch unbeantwortet bleiben.



Ungeachtet der vielen offenen Fragen steht aufgrund der getätigten Aussagen von HP schon fest, dass das Unternehmen mit dem kommenden super-flachen Laptop das absolute Premiumsegment des Notebookgeschäfts ins Ziel gefasst hat, um sich dort als führender Spieler zu etablieren. Es liegt auf der Hand, dass von Geräten für diesem Teil des Marktes keine hohen Absatzzahlen zu erwarten sind, allerdings geht es HP hierbei gar nicht primär um Verkäufe, sondern vor allem um das Prestige und darum, werbewirksam von sich als Design- und Innovations-Leader aufmerksam zu machen. Nicht ungleich Apple also gewissermaßen.


Die technischen Details zum neuen Vorzeige-Notebook von HP und was es für Features zu bieten hat wird es bereits in einigen Stunden aus erster Hand geben. Den vorliegenden Informationen nach ist geplant, das Premium-Gerät morgen im Rahmen der International Luxury Conference der New York Times in Versailles, Frankreich zu enthüllen. Wir werden natürlich alle Einzelheiten zu dem Produkt liefern, sobald sie verfügbar sind.

Huawei wird am kommenden Mittwoch, den 6. April 2016 der Weltöffentlichkeit sein neues Flaggschiff-Smartphone P9 präsentieren. Nachdem bereits in den vergangenen Monaten Spezifikationen und Bilder zu dem Gerät durchgesickert waren, machen kurz vor dem Event noch einmal frische Leaks die Runde im Netz. So erhalten wir unter anderem den bislang besten Blick auf die Rückseite des P9 beziehungsweise die dort eingelassene Kameratechnik mit gleich zwei Modulen, die in Kooperation mit Leica entwickelt wurde, und bezüglich der wichtigsten restlichen technischen Details bleiben nun auch praktisch keine Fragen mehr offen.






Schon einige Wochen ist es her als Huawei und der Kamera-Spezialist Leica eine strategische Partnerschaft ankündigten. Ende Februar gaben die beiden Unternehmen bekannt, künftig gemeinsam innovativer Lösungen im Bereich Smartphone-Fotografie entwickeln zu wollen. Damals war aber natürlich noch nicht eindeutig klar, dass bereits das nächste Flaggschiff des chinesischen Smartphone-Herstellers mit Technik von Leica aufwarten würde. Zweifel daran gibt es aufgrund des neuen Presse-Renders jetzt aber nicht mehr. Den vorliegenden Informationen nach sollen die beiden Kameramodule des P9 zudem Objektive mit asphärischen Linsen, einer Lichtstärke von 2,2 und einer Brennweite von 27 Millimetern bieten.

Abgesehen von dem sehr interessanten Kamerasystem wird der Nachfolger des Huawei P8 aber natürlich auch andere High-End-Features in die Waagschale werfen. Dank eines heute von WinFuture entdeckten Datenbankeintrags bei GFXBench erhalten wir die Bestätigung dafür, dass das Smartphone unter anderem über ein 5,1 Zoll großes Full-HD-Display (1920 x 1080 Pixel), eine 8 Megapixel Frontkamera, 3 Gigabyte RAM und 32 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher verfügt. Angetrieben wird es von dem neuen, von Huawei in Eigenregie entwickelten SoC Kirin 955, das vier Cortex-A72 und vier Cortex-A53 CPU-Kerne und eine Mali T880 Grafikeinheit integriert. Schon zuvor war bekannt geworden, dass das P9 ein Metall-Chassis, einen Fingerabdrucksensor und einen 2900-mAh-Akku mitbringen wird.


Das P9 könnte aber am Mittwoch nicht die einzige Neuvorstellung von Huawei sein. Die Gerüchteküche geht fest davon aus, dass die Chinesen neben dem beschriebenen Flaggschiff auch das im Vergleich dazu etwas abgespeckte und damit günstigere P9 Lite sowie das Phablet P9 Max vorstellen werden. Darüber hinaus wird nach wie vor über die Präsentation einer speziellen Enhanced Edition des P9 gemunkelt, die ebenfalls das Dual-Kamerasystem plus noch etwas bessere Spezifikationn als die normale P9-Version bieten soll.

Microsoft hat im Rahmen der Entwicklerkonferenz Build 2016 in der vergangenen Woche das Windows 10 Anniversary Update angekündigt, das im kommenden Sommer diverse Neuerungen für die Microsoft-Plattform mitbringen wird. Ein wichtiges Thema bei der Vorstellung des großen Updates war die Offenheit gegenüber anderen Plattformen, die Microsoft bei der Entwicklung an den Tag legt. Neben der Implementierung eines vollwertigen Linux-Subsystems plus Unix Bash Shell baut Microsoft auch Android-spezifische Funktionen in Windows 10 ein.


Da Android die erfolgreichste Mobil-Plattform der Welt und Windows das am häufigsten genutzte Desktop-Betriebssystem ist, macht Microsofts Cross Platform-Initiative durchaus Sinn. Android-Nutzer können sich nach Erscheinen des Anniversary Updates beispielsweise alle auf dem Smartphone eingehende Benachrichtigung auf Wunsch auch auf ihrem Windows 10 PC anzeigen lassen. Außerdem wird es möglich sein, direkt unter Windows 10 mit den Android-Benachrichtigung zu interagieren - diese also etwa zu verwerfen -, und die Interaktion wird umgehend auf das Smartphone weitergeleitet. Ein abermaliges Verwerfen derselben Benachrichtigung auf dem Smartphone ist also dann nicht mehr nötig.

Das beschriebene Zusammenspiel zwischen Android-Geräten und der kommenden Windows 10 Version wird unter anderem durch Modifikationen am Action Center ermöglicht. Microsoft spendiert dem Action Center nämlich eine Cloud-Anbindung, was unter anderem bedeutet, dass sich künftig Einstellungen und Benachrichtigungen des Action Centers über mehrere Windows 10 Geräte hinweg synchronisieren lassen. Vergleichbares bietet Microsoft bereits für mehrere andere Bereiche der Windows 10 Oberfläche, darunter etwa das Startmenü, das gewählte Farbschema oder das Hintergrundbild.


Auf dem Android-Smartphone muss der Nutzer die Cortana-App installieren, um die Synchronisation mit einem Windows 10 PC zu erlauben. Zudem muss in der App dasselbe Microsoft-Account hinterlegt werden, das auch unter Windows 10 genutzt wird. Ist auch dieser Schritt geschafft, wird die Cortana-App unter anderem in der Lage sein, das Weiterleiten der Benachrichtigungen zu übernehmen. Auf einem Windows 10 PC werden diese Benachrichtigungen dann nicht nur angezeigt, sondern Nutzer können laut Microsofts Build-Vortrag (wirklich interessant wird es im Video ab 16:30) sogar direkt aus dem Windows 10 Action Center heraus auf eingehende SMS antworten.

Die Ankündigung dieser neuen Cross Platform-Funktionalität von Windows 10 ist im Kontext der Build 2016 nur einer von diversen Hinweisen, die zeigen, wie sehr Microsoft mittlerweile daran interessiert ist, Windows-Nutzern Möglichkeiten an die Hand zu geben, die es erlauben, mit alternativen Mobil-Plattformen wie Android und iOS bestmöglich zu interagieren. Parallel dazu gab es während der Entwicklerkonferenz praktisch keine nennenswerten News zu Windows 10 Mobile, was aber nicht bedeutet, dass die Redmonder ihre eigene Mobil-Plattform aufgegeben haben. Microsoft will aber erst in Zukunft wieder verstärkt den Fokus auf diesen bislang wenig erfolgreichen Windows 10 Ableger legen.

The Alliance for Wireless Power has announced that Dell has joined the group, and also outlined a plan to revise its technology so it is capable of delivering 50w of power.That the two nuggets of news were announced in the same canned statement is notable, because the alliance lauds Dell as the “first major PC original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to join a wireless power standards organization.”That statement also says the Alliance has announced “... a secondary, higher-powered initiative focusing on wirelessly charging electronic products from 20 to 50 watts, like Ultrabooks, laptops, and mid-powered appliances.”That the devices in Dell's portfolio most likely to benefit from wireless charging are its laptop computers which, like most of their ilk, need rather more wattage than the 20 to which the Alliance's “Rezence” near-field magnetic resonance technology has previously aspired, mean ““Dell’s addition to the Alliance signifies the importance of defining a wireless power standard that spans … higher power levels thus expanding the range of electronics beyond smartphones.”The announcement does not offer any information on when 50w Rezence can be expected, or whether other laptop-makers are now more inclined to consider membership of the Alliance. Archaeologic We all know about the ZX80, the ZX81, the ZX Spectrum and its successors, and the QL. But these weren’t the only microcomputers Sinclair Research worked on during its brief life between 1979, when it emerged as the renamed Science of Cambridge, and 1986, the year its brand and products were bought by Amstrad and it was shut down for good.Clive Sinclair had prompted the development of the ZX80, which was largely an evolution of Science of Cambridge’s MK14 microprocessor learning kit, a board computer based on the National Semiconductor SC/MP 2 chip. The ZX80 was a essentially a MK14 based on a Z80A processor and with a fitted cassette port and TV modulator. The ZX81 was an logical upgrade of the ZX80.At the time of the ZX81’s release, the Spectrum was in development as the ZX82 and was again an upgraded version of its predecessor, this time with colour graphics and an updated Basic. Even then, though, there were many ideas being bandied about as to what kind of micros the ZX83 and the inevitable ZX84 might be.


The ZX83 would eventually become the QL, but not before the codename had been attributed to a number of possible machines that Sinclair managers and engineers thought they might bring to market in 1983. One was a mobile micro, very likely inspired by the March 1981 launch of the Osborne 1 portable computer, and this notion of a portable computer for business users would tax various Sinclair engineers for the rest of the company’s life. It was briefly attached to the ZX84 codename.Clive Sinclair’s desire to build a mobile computer that, crucially, could operate as the user’s sole machine and not as an adjunct to a desktop would eventually be realised through a product named Pandora, and development work was proceeding on the device when Alan Sugar formally took over in April 1986.Sugar killed it, but in doing so allowed Sinclair engineers soon employed elsewhere to move the project on without being hindered by the baggage that working at Sinclair had involved: specifically the need to incorporate the company’s flat-tube screen technology. The result was the LCD-based Cambridge Computing Z88, a much better product than Pandora ever came close to becoming. The Z88 was “one of [Clive Sinclair’s] best products”, says Perran Newman, who led the Pandora team after working on the C5 electric vehicle.



Sinclair’s failure to build a working mobile micro ensured Sir Clive was never credited with developing Britain’s first laptop computer. That honour goes to Thorn EMI, which built and released the battery-powered Liberator in the year between the summers of 1984 and 1985, while Sinclair Research was completing the QL and, later, developing the Spectrum 128.Sinclair also missed out on producing the first British games console, as we’d understand the term today, when a project dubbed the Low-Cost Colour Computer - aka LC3 - fizzled out when its two key developers got working on other, more pressing projects.The QL itself might have been the means by which Sinclair released the first British 16-bit home computer, if the business machine’s development team had been given extra time to adapt their hardware to become a platform for future Spectrum-branded machines. They tried, but under the tight development deadline they were working to, they failed and the idea was dropped.


The QL was never the great success Sinclair hoped it might be, but it might have been had more time been granted to its development and features considered for a later, second-generation model, codenamed Tyche. These included a 3.5-inch floppy drive in place of the Microdrives, a full 68000 processor instead of the QL’s cut-down 68008 and a mouse-driven graphical user interface. Tyche would have provided all of those had it got further than the drawing board. Its GUI would have been Digital Research’s Graphical Environment Manager, better known as Gem.Gem was ported to the 68000 for Atari’s ST during the last quarter of 1984 and the gaming power of the ST but more particularly of its 68000-based rival, Commodore’s Amiga, prompted two Sinclair engineers to propose an Sinclair alternative, codenamed Loki. Like Pandora and Tyche, it never survived the Amstrad takeover. Ditto projects like Janus and Proteus, or even left-field options, such as Dylan, conceived as a low-cost PC clone that might succeed where the QL had failed.


Martin Brennan joined Sinclair Research in 1982 specifically to investigate and develop new artificial intelligence algorithms, but he soon became wrapped up in broader efforts centred on bringing Sinclair’s promised Microdrives to market. Brennan eventually engineered the ZX Interface 1 through which the Microdrives would connect to the Spectrum.But Sinclair Research wasn’t the kind of place where engineers were told to work on specific projects to the exclusion of all else. The company hired young, brainy people and gave them space for their natural creativity to flourish.One of Martin’s ideas: a really cheap machine that could bring punters in through its gaming capabilities but provide scope for expansion so they might build it up into a full computer in due course. Designed to be inexpensive, it would perhaps replace the monochrome ZX81 and certainly protect the Spectrum from Far Eastern rivals feared to be on a mission to undercut Britain’s market leader.



There was a template for such an expandable system: the Mattel Intellivision. Launched in America in 1979 but not made available in the UK until 1982, the Intellivision had been developed as a games console to rival Atari’s massively popular VCS 2600. Unlike the Atari box, the Intellivision was created with the idea that its console hub could, with the addition of a bionic keyboard add-on, become a true personal computer.The Intellivision Keyboard Component, as the add-on was called, provided extra memory, a cassette interface and a 6502 processor. Essentially it was a computer in its own right, using the console as a TV-output peripheral. It proved hard to engineer, and was late to market.LC3 would avoid these problems by starting out as a computer. The notion was to fit it with a Z80 processor, a little bit of memory and enough ROM for the operating system, which would load games in off ROM cartridges. It was envisaged as a small black box with a ROM slot in the front, says Stephen Berry, the Sinclair software engineer Martin Brennan got working on the LC3’s OS and Basic interpreter while he worked up a prototype motherboard. It’s not hard to imagine the visual inspiration: the ZX Microdrive itself.


Not that LC3 ever got as far as an industrial design. Breadboards were built with TTL to provide Berry with hardware on which to run his code, but the project doesn’t appear to have progressed any further than that. Berry says he was shifted to more pressing matters: wrangling the documentation for the QL, for one, a task that took him many months of full days and weekends of work to complete.There was no time for the LC3 until all that was done, and by the time the QL manuals had been completed, around June or July of 1984, the LC3’s time had passed.“I wasn’t at Sinclair for the LC3 but was for Loki, and LC3 only ever got mentioned in passing,” recalled Quondam Sinclair programmer and occasional Register journalist Rupert Goodwins in 2002. “I remember seeing a ULA design for it, but it was only pulled out of a cupboard for nostalgia reasons.”More than 30 years on from those days, details of the proposed specification, beyond the basic notion of implementing very little memory in order to keep the price as low as possible, remain vague. Stephen does recall some of the work he did on the software. The operating system, he says, was built out of a “little kernel” capable of multi-tasking. He may not have completed support for windowing - really just segmenting the screen into arbitrary independent areas - but he certainly built in the hooks for the mechanism behind such a system to be added later. “The design had to overcome the twin restrictions of low processor power and limited amounts of memory,” he says.

Der größte Wermutstropfen an der sich aktuell entfaltenden Saga rund um das iPhone 8 und seinen nicht ganz so interessanten Schwestermodellen ist aber vielleicht der folgende: Aufgrund des neuen Designs und vor allem des Wechsels auf OLED-Panels erscheint es nun auch für die Informanten von Bloomberg sehr wahrscheinlich, dass Apple nicht in der Lage sein wird, das neueste iPhone wie gewohnt Ende September des Jahres auf den Markt zu bringen. Dem Artikel nach könnte sich der Verkaufsstart daher gut und gerne um ein oder zwei Monate nach hinten verschieben, was zuletzt auch schon andere Experten prognostizierten. Wie akkurat diese Einschätzungen sind, lässt sich derzeit aber leider nicht bewerten.

HTC hat das neue Android-Smartphone One X10 in Folge der jüngsten Leaks mittlerweile offiziell vorgestellt. Im Augenblick allerdings lediglich für Russland. Den Angaben auf der russischen Webseite des taiwanischen Herstellers nach handelt es sich dabei exakt um das erwartete Mittelklassegerät mit großem 4000-mAh-Akku.
Mit dem neuen X10 erweitert HTC seine bekannte One-Reihe um ein Smartphone mit 5,5 Zoll großem Full-HD-Display (1920 x 1080 Pixel), welches von dem MediaTek-SoC Helio P10 angetrieben wird. Zur Ausstattung des Mittelklassemodells gehören zudem unter anderem 3 Gigabyte RAM, 32 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher, ein microSD-Kartenslot (unterstützt Karten mit bis zu 2 Terabyte Speicherkapazität) und ein Fingerabdrucksensor auf der Geräterückseite.



Die Abmessungen des One X10 betragen 152,9 x 75,6 x 8,23 Millimeter, das Gewicht wird offiziell mit 175 Gramm angegeben. Das Smartphone verfügt dabei über ein schickes Metallgehäuse, das in Russland in den Farbvarianten Schwarz und Silber angeboten werden wird. Die rückseitige Hauptkamera wartet mit einem 16 Megapixel Sensor auf, während die Frontkamera für Selfies nur einen 8 Megapixel Sensor aufzubieten hat.

Das Ausstattungshighlight des neuen Smartphones ist aber wie eingangs schon erwähnt der Akku mit einer Kapazität von 4000 mAh. Dieser soll in Kooperation mit speziellen Software-Anpassungen (Boost + genannt) für eine besonders lange Laufzeit sorgen. Als Betriebssystem läuft Android 7 Nougat mit bekannter Sense-Oberfläche auf dem X10.

HTC wird das Dual-SIM-fähige One X10 eigenen Angaben nach noch im Laufe dieses Monats auf den russischen Markt bringen. Der empfohlene Verkaufspreis liegt dort bei umgerechnet rund 334 Euro. Wann mit einer Ankündigung des Smartphones hierzulande zu rechnen ist, lässt sich im Moment leider nicht sagen.


Microsoft hat zum vergangenen Osterwochenende hin bestätigt, was kurz zuvor bereits durch die Gerüchteküche schwirrte: Das Creators Update für Windows 10 Mobile wird nur einen sehr kleinen Prozentsatz der sich in Kundenhänden befindenden Smartphones erreichen. Der Verteilungsstart der Aktualisierung ist aber weiterhin für den 25. April 2017 vorgesehen.

Nachdem die Verteilung des Creators Updates für Windows 10 PCs inzwischen für alle Anwender angelaufen ist, befindet sich Microsofts Entwicklerteam kurz davor, dasselbe Update auch für Windows 10 Mobile auszuliefern. Wie das Unternehmen in einem Blog-Beitrag informiert, werden die folgenden insgesamt 13 Smartphone-Modelle das Creators Update ganz offiziell erhalten.



Microsoft macht mit seinen Ausführungen deutlich, dass die genannten Smartphones auch die einzigen Geräte darstellen, die von künftig erscheinenden Insider Builds offiziell unterstützt werden. Das Unternehmen fährt seine Bemühungen im Smartphone-Bereich also noch weiter zurück als es dies ohnehin schon getan hat. Allerdings dürfen Nutzer, die ein Smartphone besitzen, welches nicht auf der obenstehenden Liste enthalten ist, weiterhin die über das Windows Insider Programm bereitgestellten Testversionen des Creators Updates (und auch kommend Builds) installieren. Microsoft warnt aber ausdrücklich davor, dass diese Vorgehensweise nicht offiziell abgesegnet ist und Anwender somit auf eigenes Risiko handeln.

Die Frage, warum diverse Smartphone-Modelle, die seit längerem für das Insider Programm angemeldet sind und somit bereits seit einer Weile mit einer Vorschauversion des Creators Updates laufen, nun zum Erscheinen der finalen Update-Ausgabe nicht länger offiziell unterstützt werden, beantwortet Microsoft im Übrigen nur bedingt. Laut Unternehmensangaben hätte das Feedback von Insidern angezeigt, dass auf einigen älteren Smartphones nicht die bestmögliche Nutzererfahrung gewährleistet werden könne.

Parallel zu den Ankündigungen rund um das Creators Update für Smartphones hat Microsoft die Windows 10 Mobile Build 15204 für Insider im Fast Ring zum Download bereitgestellt. Es handelt sich dabei um die erste Ausgabe des Betriebssystems für Windows-Phones aus dem neuen Redstone 3 Entwicklungszweig.


Für Windows Insider, die nicht nur ein Smartphone, sondern auch einen ihrer PCs im Fast Ring haben, hat Microsoft ebenfalls eine neue Build veröffentlicht. In diesem Fall handelt es sich um die zweite Redstone 3 Version, die nun die Build-Nummer 16176 trägt. Sowohl der neue PC- als auch Smartphone-Build im Fast Ring bringt keine nennenswerten neuen Features mit, wartet dafür aber wie mittlerweile gewohnt mit einigen Fehlerkorrekturen, Anpassungen an den Kernbestandteilen des Betriebssystems sowie einer Reihe bekannter Probleme auf. Einzelheiten dazu lassen sich in Microsofts Blog-Beitrag nachlesen.
Microsoft hat kürzlich ein Event angekündigt, das am 2. Mai 2017 in New York City, USA stattfinden und - gemäß Einladungsschreiben an Pressevertreter - Neuigkeiten für das Bildungswesen zum Thema haben wird. Die Gerüchteküche geht nun fest davon aus, dass der US-Konzern plant, im Rahmen der Veranstaltung eine neue Variante von Windows 10 zu präsentieren. Darüber hinaus könnte es dort aber auch ein spezielles Surface-Notebook von Microsoft zu sehen geben.



Wie die Webseite MSPoweruser unter Berufung auf Microsoft-Kenner wie beispielsweise die ZDNet-Reporterin Mary Jo Foley sowie eigene anonyme Quellen informiert, dürfte die neue OS-Variante mit der Bezeichnung „Windows Cloud“ angekündigt werden. Es soll sich dabei um ein etwas modifiziertes Windows 10 handeln, das Nutzern lediglich gestattet, Programme aus dem Windows Store herunterzuladen. Auf diese Art wird aber offenbar nicht nur die Installation neuer Universal Windows Platform Apps, sondern auch die von vollwertigen Win32-Anwendungen möglich sein. Der Windows Store Zwang ist also vermutlich in erster Linie als Sicherheitsmechanismus zu sehen, der es Administratoren von Bildungseinrichtungen ermöglichen soll, Software-Installationen effizienter zu kontrollieren beziehungsweise zu verwalten. Zudem wird spekuliert, dass Microsoft Windows Cloud für seine Hardware-Partner deutlich günstiger anbieten wird als die anderen Windows 10 Ausgaben, was in günstigeren Windows-PCs etwa für Schulen resultieren könnte.

Den vorliegenden inoffiziellen Angaben nach wird Microsoft die Produktion von erschwinglichen Geräten aber nicht komplett anderen Herstellern überlassen. Wie schon ZDNet früher berichtet hatte, informiert auch MSPoweruser darüber, dass der Redmonder Softwareriese die Vorstellung eines Produkts mit der Bezeichnung „CloudBook“ anvisiert. Es ist noch nicht ganz klar, was genau dieses CloudBook verkörpern wird und ob es zur Surface-Familie des Unternehmens gezählt werden kann. Es gibt immerhin erste Hinweise, denen nach es sich um einen Laptop mit ARM-Prozessor, genauer gesagt den Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, handeln könnte.


Zu anderen von Microsoft-Fans sehnsüchtig erwarteten Surface-Produkten wie dem Surface Pro 5 und dem Surface Book 2 gibt es im Augenblick leider so gut wie keine neuen Informationen. Nur so viel: Alle Insider erwarten die Vorstellung dieser beiden Geräte zwar in den nächsten Monaten, aber entsprechende Ankündigungen im Zuge des bevorstehenden Events am 2. Mai werden als höchst unwahrscheinlich eingestuft. Vielleicht nutzt Microsoft ja in diesem Jahr die bereits am 10. Mai beginnende Entwicklerkonferenz Build, um weitere Hardware-Neuheiten zu präsentieren.
HTC bewegt sich offenbar zügig auf die Enthüllung weiterer seiner für dieses Jahr geplanten Smartphone-Neuheiten zu. Der Reporter Evan Blass hat auf Twitter nun jedenfalls zwei Bilder veröffentlicht, die zum Marketing-Material eines bislang noch nicht offiziell vorgestellten Modells des taiwanischen Herstellers gehören dürften. Der Name des Smartphones wird demnach HTC One X10 lauten.

Für die maximale Taktfrequenz des Apple A9 Chipsatzes im iPhone SE hat diese Überlegung den Angaben von TechCrunch nach jedoch keine Relevanz. Wie die Tests der Publikation ergeben haben, läuft das SoC im neuen 4 Zoll iPhone mit denselben 1,85 Gigahertz wie auch im iPhone 6s. Das kompakte Phone SE ist folglich wirklich genau so leistungsfähig wie die deutlich größeren Topmodelle und Käufer müssen abgesehen von den Display-Unterschieden lediglich auf die bessere Frontkamera, den Touch ID Sensor der 2. Generation und 3D Touch Unterstützung der iPhone 6s Generation verzichten.

Kunden, die sich für das 9,7 Zoll iPad Pro interessieren, müssen wie oben erläutert im Vergleich zum 12,9 Zoll Modell etwas mehr Performance-Abstriche in Kauf nehmen, bekommen dafür aber auch einige Vorteile, darunter beispielsweise das neuartige True Tone Display, eine bessere Hauptkamera (12 Megapixel) mit Blitzlicht, „Hey Siri“ Unterstützung und die leichtere, handlichere Gehäuseform.


Das kommende High-End-Smartphone des taiwanischen Herstellers ist in der Gerüchteküche aktuell schlicht und einfach als „HTC 10“ bekannt, es wird also erwartet, dass HTC bei der Präsentation seiner neuesten Entwicklung auf den seit einigen paar Jahren genutzten Markenname „One“ verzichtet.

Die Enthüllung des neue 10 wird HTC am Dienstag, den 12. April ab 14 Uhr mitteleuropäischer Zeit direkt auf der eigenen Homepage htc.com vornehmen. Ob es dazu einen Livestream geben oder aber das Gerät einfach nur mit Bildern, Videos und Spezifikationen vorgestellt wird, geht aus der HTC-Ankündigung nicht direkt hervor, wir tippen aber auf ersteres.

Wie mittlerweile bei so gut wie allen Technik-Neuheiten üblich, kennen wir aufgrund von Leaks auch im Fall des HTC 10 schon vor der offiziellen Enthüllung die wichtigsten Einzelheiten. Das nächste Flaggschiff der Taiwaner wird dem bekannten und durchaus schicken One A9 höchstwahrscheinlich rein äußerlich sehr ähnlich sein, aber zusätzlich auch ein paar Designelemente seines direkten Vorgängers One M9 aufweisen.


Die HTC-Teaser sowie die durchgesickerten Infos lassen außerdem darauf schließen, dass das HTC 10 eine hervorragende Front- und Hauptkamera (12 Megapixel Sensor) vorweisen können und mit einem sogenannten Super LCD 5 Bildschirm aufwarten wird. Das Display soll 5,1 Zoll groß sein und mit QHD (2560 x 1440 Pixel) auflösen. Des Weiteren zur Ausstattung gehören sollen ein schneller Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Prozessor, ein Fingerabdrucksensor, 4 Gigabyte RAM, bis zu 64 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher, ein microSD-Kartenslot und ein 3000-mAh-Akku. Software-seitig darf mit Android 6.0 Marshmallow inklusive der neuesten Version der bekannten Sense-Oberfläche gerechnet werden.

Abschließend lässt sich noch erwähnen, dass HTC das neue Smartphone sehr wahrscheinlich in diversen Farbvarianten anbieten wird. So verrieten es zumindest einige durchgesickerte Pressefotos. Somit ist im Grunde eigentlich nur noch ungewiss, ab welchem Zeitpunkt HTC das 10 im internationalen Handel verfügbar machen will. Darüber werden wir spätestens am 12. April berichten können.



Apple hat mit dem iPhone SE und dem iPad Pro 9,7 Zoll gestern zwei interessante Produkte angekündigt, doch Kunden, die seit Monaten gespannt auf eine Auffrischung der MacBook-Familie mit Intels Skylake-Prozessoren warten, wurden leider enttäuscht. Aufgrund fehlender Leaks im Vorfeld war das jedoch abzusehen. Heute, keine 24 Stunden nach der Apple-Keynote, spuckt die Gerüchteküche allerdings plötzlich eine relevante Neuigkeit für Mac-Fans aus. Wie die taiwanische Publikation Digitimes unter Berufung auf Angaben aus Industriekreisen informiert, wird Apple im kommenden Sommer - wahrscheinlich bis spätestens Juli - neue, besonders flache MacBook-Modelle mit 13 und 15 Zoll Display auf den Markt bringen.

Digitimes ist zwar bei Weitem nicht die verlässlichste Quelle, wenn es um Leaks zu kommender Hardware geht, allerdings ist zum einen häufig zumindest ein Funken Wahrheit an den Berichten der Webseite, und zum anderen passt die MacBook-Geschichte tatsächlich sehr gut zu den aktuellen Entwicklungen am Markt sowie zu Apples gängiger Praxis bei der Vorstellung solcher ganz neu designter Produkte.


Es ist absolut kein Geheimnis, dass die aktuelle Notebook-Line-up des kalifornischen Unternehmens kein einziges Modell beinhaltet, das aktuellste Technik verwendet. Immerhin aus Designer-Sicht kann das kleine, flache MacBook mit 12 Zoll Retina-Display, welches im Frühjahr 2015 auf den Markt kam und von einem Intel Core M Prozessor mit Broadwell-Mikroarchitektur angetrieben wird, als fortschrittlich bezeichnet werden. Dahinter reihen sich das MacBook Pro mit 13 Zoll Retina-Display sowie das MacBook Air mit 11 und 13 Zoll Display ein, deren Industriedesign seit Jahren weitgehend unverändert ist, die aber im vergangenen Jahr immerhin mit Intel Core Prozessoren der Broadwell-Familie ausgestattet wurden. Das Schlusslicht hinsichtlich Aktualität stellt das MacBook Pro mit 15 Zoll Retina-Display dar, da Apple dort auf ein mittlerweile fast vier Jahre altes Chassis in Kombination mit Intels Haswell-Prozessoren setzt.


Auch wenn Apple mit die schnellsten PCI-Express SSDs auf dem Markt verbaut und im Laufe der Jahre immer wieder Detailverbesserungen an seinen Notebooks vorgenommen hat, ist spätestens jetzt klar, dass es für die MacBook Pro und MacBook Air Reihe Zeit für ein wirklich signifikantes Upgrade ist. Da sämtliche dafür geeigneten Intel Skylake Prozessoren seit Anfang 2016 ebenfalls gut lieferbar sind, sollte der Vorstellung neuer MacBooks in den kommenden Monaten nichts mehr im Wege stehen.

Warum aber haben die Kalifornier die Ankündigung nicht auf dem gestrigen Event vorgenommen? Das könnte schlicht und einfach mit Apples Vorliebe zusammenhängen, brandneue Macs im Rahmen der WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) im Juni zu enthüllen. Das Unternehmen hat in der Vergangenheit schon Mehrfach die große Bühne seiner Entwicklerkonferenz genutzt, um neben den obligatorischen Software-Updates wichtige Mac-Neuheiten zu präsentieren, im Jahr 2013 beispielsweise den komplett neu gestalteten Mac Pro.

Falls unsere Vermutungen auf Grundlage der neuesten Gerüchte auch nur annähernd korrekt sind, wird Apple zur WWDC 2016 komplett neu designte MacBooks mit 13 und 15 Zoll Retina-Display präsentieren. Aus dem Digitimes-Artikel geht allerdings nicht hervor, ob diese Laptops dann MacBook Air, MacBook Pro oder einfach nur MacBook heißen werden. Der einzige zusätzlichen Hinweis, den es noch von der taiwanischen Publikation gibt, legt nahe, dass die neuen 13 und 15 Zoll Modelle flacher sein werden als das aktuelle MacBook Air. Das wirft jedoch weitere Fragen auf, wie beispielsweise: Kann Apple in einem so flachen Chassis Prozessoren und - potentiell - Grafikkarten unterbringen, die die Bezeichnung MacBook Pro rechtfertigen würden? Ungewiss erscheint außerdem das Schicksal der MacBook Air Reihe, da Apple das MacBook mit 12 Zoll Retina-Display und vor allem auch die iPad Pro Familie bereits als Nachfolger dieser Notebook-Modelle in Stellung gebracht hat.

Abschließend kann also festgehalten werden, dass es trotz der neuesten Erkenntnisse im Moment noch so manche ungeklärte Fragen zu den kommenden MacBook-Modellen gibt. Wir hoffen also einfach darauf, dass Apple die Mac-Gemeinde nicht mehr allzu lange warten lässt und wirklich spätestens zur WWDC 2016 im Juni Klarheit diesbezüglich schafft.



Apple hat im Anschluss an die Vorstellung des iPhone SE („SE“ steht im Übrigen tatsächlich für „Special Edition“ wie Apples Marketing-Chef Phil Schiller mittlerweile bestätigte) und des iPad Pro 9,7 Zoll auch eine Reihe relevanter Software-Updates für seine vier Plattformen veröffentlicht. Nach einer mehrere Monate andauernden Beta-Phase stehen somit ab sofort iOS 9.3, OS X 10.11.4, tvOS 9.2 und watchOS 2.2 für alle Apple-Nutzer zum Download bereit.

Das umfangreichste Update unter den genannten vier Aktualisierungen ist iOS 9.3. Die neueste iOS-Version bringt neben Fehlerbehebungen und Sicherheitspatches beispielsweise einen Multi-User Modus für iPads mit, der vor allem für die Verwendung der Apple-Tablets in Bildungseinrichtungen nützlich sein soll, eine leicht überarbeitete Notizen-App, bei der der Zugriff auf Inhalte nun mit einem Passwort beziehungsweise dem eigenen Fingerabdruck geschützt werden kann, und der sogenannte Night Shift Modus, der dafür sorgt, dass das Display nachts eine deutlich wärmere Farbpalette darstellt, was sich Studien nach positiv auf das Schlafverhalten auswirken soll. Hinzu kommen außerdem einige Geräte-spezifische Anpassungen für das iPad Pro und das iPhone 6s (Plus). Bei den iPhone-Topmodellen wurden unter anderem für mehrere vorinstallierte Apps neue 3D Touch Shortcuts hinzugefügt.

OS X 10.11.4 enthält ebenfalls diverse Bugfixes und Sicherheitsflicken, die Liste der neuen Features ist aber deutlich kürzer als bei iOS 9.3. So hat Apple diesbezüglich dem Mac-Betriebssystem lediglich die Passwort-Funktion für die Notizen-App sowie Unterstützung für Live Fotos in den Programmen Nachrichten und Fotos spendiert.

Globally, the US came in as the top country for thefts of the kit, with Australia at number two and the UK at number three.Schools were the single biggest scenes of laptop theft crime in the US but ranked at only number four in EMEA.The study, based on data from the 6 million devices protected by Absolute’s Computrace software, also reports that enterprises are making increasing use of remote data deletion and sensitive data retrievals from stolen devices.The number of remote data deletes has risen by 34 per cent, and the amount of devices from which data is being remotely retrieved has increased by 135 per cent, the study said.Just under 5GB of data was retrieved from stolen devices in 401 file retrievals carried out by Absolute Software during 2012, a figure which compares to 171 data retrieval jobs last year, the report said.The device theft data in Absolute's report is compiled from 12,705 theft reports it received during 2012, a figure that compares to 13,818 in its previous annual report, which covered 2011. Data deletion jobs rose from 4,812 in 2011 to 6,442 last year.


The endpoint security and computer management firm notes that organisations are under pressure to adhere to stricter data breach compliance, such as the European data protection laws. As a result, organisations are focusing less on hardware recovery and more on the security of the data itself.“With reputations on the line, it is no longer simply the cost of the device but the wealth of sensitive data sitting within tablets, laptops and smartphones that is causing IT and business headaches, explained Derek Skinner, regional director, recovery and investigative services EMEA, Absolute Software.It is no surprise therefore that our report reveals a rise in remote data wipes. The sooner an organisation can secure a stolen device and render the data on it unusable to thieves, the easier it is for it to prove there hasn’t been a data breach.” More details have begun to trickle out regarding Microsoft's second-generation Surface fondleslabs, which are expected to ship in the fall.


On Wednesday, Neowin reported that new versions of both the Intel-based Surface Pro and the ARM-based Surface running Windows RT were in the works.Windows-watcher Paul Thurrot later confirmed the report and added a few details from his own sources, such as that the new ARM version would simply be called Surface, dropping the previous generation's RT moniker.Few other details have emerged about Microsoft's follow-up to 2012's $900m albatross, except that it will once again be built around a Tegra chip from Nvidia. Based on what has emerged about the new Surface Pro, however, the new Surface will likely be more of an incremental update than a radical redesign.According to both Neowin and Thurrot, the second-generation Surface Pro will run on a Haswell-based Core i5 processor from Intel, which should help with one the first generation Pro's major shortcomings: battery life. Thurrot claims the new tablet will be rated for up to seven hours of run time, rather than the first Surface Pro's five.


Both reports suggest that the system's RAM will be boosted from 4GB to 8GB, although Thurrot believes the beefier configuration will be an option, rather than the default.Neowin believes the new slates will look similar to the current Surface Pro. Thurrot says they'll look identical. With any luck, that will mean the magnetic cover connector will also be unchanged, allowing existing Surface keyboard covers to work with the new models.Redmond has cooked up at least one external modification to its tablets, however. The first-generation Surface slabs included a simple kickstand for propping up the screen when you want to use the device as a laptop. For the new models, Microsoft has reportedly refined the kickstand; Neowin isn't sure what that means, but Thurrot says the new version can lock into two distinct positions.Neither report included any information on pricing, as you might expect at this stage. Thurrot reckoned – reasonably – that any price he quoted today could very easily change by the time the devices shipped. But price could prove to be the make-or-break factor for the second-generation Surfaces, given the deep discounts Microsoft has been forced to offer on the earlier models.



Nothing concrete has been said about the launch date of the new fondleslabs, either. But if history repeats itself, the new Surface running Windows RT could be formally unveiled on October 18, 2013, the official launch date of Windows 8.1.The original Surface RT went on sale at midnight on October 26, 2012, the same date as the Windows 8 launch – which, like this year's October 18, was a Friday. The original Surface Pro shipped around three months after that, but whether Microsoft will play it that way this time is anybody's guess. WD has taken the wraps off its first 2.5-inch hard drive designed for network storage roles, NAS nuts in need of a more compact connected storage box – and, crucially, teensy drives to put in it – will be pleased to hear.Part of WD’s NAS-centric Red series, the notebook form-factor drives come in 750GB and 1TB capacities. Both of these are pre-loaded with the company’s NASware 2.0 firmware - code which it claims makes the drive better able to dance to the tune of any RAID controller it is connected to.


For instance, availability requests from RAID controllers won’t be ignored during start-up self-test routines, as they often are on desktop- and laptop-centric drives. The NASware 2.0 Red drive will pause the test to tell the controller when it will be ready for use, so the controller doesn’t assume it's broken, as it does when its requests are ignored or answered too late, said WD UK Country Manager, Jermaine Campbell.WD reckons its Red hard drives – which now also include a 4TB 3.5-incher with 64MB of cache – are sufficiently resilient that the vendor can afford to bundle a three-year warranty against component failures and manufacturing faults, though you’ll note that data loss caused by these events is not covered.The company claimed NASware 2.0's tweaks in this area give the drives “a 35 per cent mean time between failures improvement over standard desktop drives”.You also get gratis 24 x 7 phone support, which also covers any hardware into which you slot your Red drives, WD said today.


If you opt for 2.5in drives, many big-name two-bay-plus NAS boxes can take them using 3.5-inch adaptors. They will be more quiet than 3.5-inch drives, but less capacious and of lower performance. Boxes designed to take 2.5-inch drives specifically are much more rare, but they do exist, particularly from lesser-known names. A case in point: Addonics’ Mini NAS.Analysis With Microsoft’s purchase of Nokia’s mobile business for $7.1bn, the Redmond software giant has finally become a phone and device maker.The deal gives Microsoft Nokia’s global handset engineering, manufacturing, sales and distribution business; the family of Windows-Phone-powered Lumia smartphones; a war chest of 8,500 Lumia and Asha phone patents while licensing 30,000 utility patents; and a standing army of 32,000 Nokia employees. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014.Interestingly, it's not Microsoft’s biggest purchase: it’s second to the $8.2bn purchase of loss-making internet chat biz Skype in 2011.



The Nokia acquisition also potentially gives Microsoft its next chief executive officer: Nokia boss Stephen Elop who was once a senior suit in Redmond.Announcing the deal on Monday night, outgoing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer called it a “bold step into the future”. Nokia has talent in hardware design and engineering, supply chain and manufacturing management, sales, marketing and distribution, Ballmer told his employees.Selling the deal, the shy and retiring boss reckoned it was time to accelerate Microsoft’s share and profits in the world of mobiles. (Windows Phone has 3.3 per cent of the global smartphone market, according to IDC.)Increasing phones sales and market share, pumping out better handsets - this is the promise we’re being sold. But chances are Microsoft won’t get what it expects.Microsoft could certainly use Nokia’s engineering and design smarts. It was Nokia that complained Microsoft is moving too slowly on issuing Windows Phone 8 updates - that it was still working on release cycles more appropriate to a maker of PCs than one producing consumer electronics.


The only question is why Microsoft waited so long. The Nokia-Microsoft platform partnership, in which Nokia dumped Linux and Symbian for Windows Phone, was formed two years ago. Now, it’s been decided having separate companies wasn’t working.To maintain continuity, the old Nokia heads remain: Jo Harlow will continue to lead Nokia’s Smart Devices; Timo Toikkanen will remain in place leading the Mobile Phones division; and Stefan Pannenbecker will run the design teams. The company was founded in September 2009, and it spent three and half years – to April 2013 – writing code running on Linux before its first product reached general availability. Founder Doron Kempel bankrolled it for the first year and then went to VCs for A, B and C-rounds of funding with some $101m raised in total.It has sold its Omnicube kit for five quarters now, and has 260 partners worldwide, being a 100 per cent channel company.Competitor Nutanix has reached a $200m revenue run-rate in its eleventh quarter of shipping products. Kempel said: We'll get to a $200 million run rate in our eighth quarter.But Dell has struck an OEM deal with Nutanix. Will Simplivity be able to keep up?


Kempel said customers like the fact that as soon as data hits an Omnicube it is deduped and compressed and stays that way forever in the Omnicube universe, including replication to other Omnicubes. Rehydration only happens when it exits Simplivity's domain. Customers have achieved 20:1 and even 30:1 data reduction ratios; that's Kempel's claim.The dedupe and compression is carried out by a PCIe accelerator card, with an FPGA and NVRAM on it, with two exceptions; running Omnicube software on a laptop or as a virtual machine in the Amazon cloud. Then the dedupe and compression is done by software.Only one VMware admin person is needed to manage a customer's set of Omnicubes, wherever they are deployed, which, Kempel says, radically cuts management costs.Simplivity's headcount was 100 people in August 2013, 200 people in February 2014, 300 in June 2014 and is 350 now, in August. There are about 140 engineers and 120 sales heads, with as many field people in EMEA as there are in the US. Altogether there are some 60 employees in the EMEA region.


Reaching a $200m run-rate eight quarters after first shipping means achieving a $50m quarter. Kempel founded data deduper Diligent with Moshe Yanai, and sold it to IBM for about $200m, so I wouldn't bet against him.Dodgy USB chargers are in the news again in Australia, with stationery giant Officeworks recalling a charger on safety grounds.The recall comes six weeks after the death of a Sydney woman, Sheryl Aldeguer, was attributed to an unsafe charger.At the time Rod Stowe, the Fair Trading Commissioner in the Australian State of New South Wales (NSW), said “a young woman wearing headphones and holding her laptop was found dead with burns on her ears and chest, in an apparent electrocution”.In the latest safety warning, Officeworks has told NSW Fair Trading the chargers were at risk of overheating and melting, after an incident was reported to the company.The recall covers devices with product number MS10071223, sold between July 19, 2013 and August 2, 2014, and Officeworks told Fair Trading that around 3,400 devices were sold nationally, with approximately 1,050 in NSW.


The company is having devices tested and assessed. Customers who have the chargers should contact Officeworks on 1300 633 423.NSW Fair Trading states that Officeworks is also liaising with Energy Safe Victoria about the product.Since the June incident, the NSW regulator says it's issued 17 penalty notices over dodgy USB chargers, and has inspected 2,124 items at 1,166 outlets. +Comment Apple's most popular products are set to vanish from Chinese officials' boardrooms after the People's Republic reportedly struck them off the official procurement list.Ten gizmos including the iPad, iPad Mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro can no longer be purchased for use by the Chinese state bureaucracy, Bloomberg reported unnamed officials who'd read the document as saying.Although its accuracy has not yet been officially confirmed, the list appeared to show that Chinese bureaucrats can still purchase products built by Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo.This run-down of officially sanctioned suppliers is usually produced by the National Development and Reform Commission in partnership with the Ministry of Finance. It will not be updated until January 2015, meaning that Apple could miss out on a huge chunk of potential revenue.



This means that no iThings will be bought by any of China's government ministries or local outposts. Neither will a single member of the many departments of the Communist Party be allowed to worship at the altar of Apple (or the latest model of this altar, if you want to be accurate).Currently, there has been no official admission of this policy from China and the list of companies deemed worthy of a place on the procurement list has not been made public.The latest one-inch-punch aimed at Apple is the latest in a list of blows the firm has suffered in China. A recent report on state-sponsored TV alleged the iPhone's tracking system was a threat to national security. It's little wonder Beijing feels threatened, after leaks from rogue NSA sysadmin Edward Snowden revealed that the US was hellbent on spying on pretty much everyone, pretty much all of the time.China: Microsoft raids are not over yet

Although Chinese government has been reticent about Apple, it has published blow-by-blow accounts of the Microsoft anti-trust case on official websites, including this ominous warning from the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC):Microsoft should strictly abide by Chinese laws and may not interfere in any way hinder investigation of the case, to ensure an objective and impartial investigation of the case.The Chinese do not seem to have made the same kind of public demands of Apple, at least not yet. Interestingly, State organs aren't particularly keen on telling the world about their plans anyway, judging by the fact some parts of its websites haven't been updated for more than five years.The SAIC's English-language news section, which is helpfully translated as Activities and Speeches, remains untouched since 2007, when Zhou Bohua, secretary of the Party Leadership Group, creepily told units at all levels to follow the guidance of the Deng Xiaoping Theory and the important thought of the Three Represents to implement the scientific development concept and the strategy of building a harmonious socialist society.What that means, he goes on to say, is that all businesses need to help ensure other firms stick to the letter of the law.


Efforts should be made to... crack down on illegal acts to create a standardized, orderly, harmonious and civilized market and social environment, and accelerate the building of sound social morality by giving priority to launching a campaign to promote ideological progress among the public, he roared.Once ensconced at the local boozer, I was extremely pleasantly surprised. Admittedly the connection took a little longer to establish, but the app connected to the camera just as simply as it did when on the same network – albeit with a slower frame rate, around 2.5fps.As well as the plugCAM iOS and Android apps, there's a Windows PC one too, which can be found on the Brite View support pages. With this installed you can set up triggers for motion detection, with alarms, emails and either snapshots or video recordings, as well as scheduled recording between certain hours. So, if you're able to dedicate a PC to doing the recording, then the plugCAM desktop app offers an easy to configure approach for more comprehensive monitoring.



There are cheaper IP cameras available, but if you want something up that's uncomplicated to configure – especially if you're monitoring somewhere or someone who's not technical – then I reckon this is a pretty decent option, and about as simple to set up as you can get.Naturally, alternatives exist and if IFA is anything to go by – the consumer electronics-fest in Berlin last week – then we’ll have plenty more to choose from soon. At the event, D-Link showed its myD-Link Home Monitor cameras, which go on sale next month.The mydlink Home system relies on Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections, rather than HomePlug, but like the Solwise unit, promise painless configuration of remote access via D Link's cloud services.Another announcement at IFA came from Withings – the makers of the smart bathroom scales and various health monitoring gadgets. The Withings Home combines an HD W-Fi camera (with iOS support, but not Android), with temperature and humidity sensors, and even detection of volatile organic compounds.


The unit on show at IFA also was being demonstrated using its Ethernet port which Withings doesn’t mention in any of its blurb. It also features a loudspeaker and has two mics for noise cancellation enabling two-way conversations to be conducted using the device.Available soon, at £170, it's pricey, but at least looks far more home-friendly than many of the alternatives. The extra monitoring functions will likely appeal to those who fret about more than just burglary.Certainly the products coming on stream this year are looking less complicated to configure and, like Google Glass seem destined to bring the Big Brother into the home and beyond. Indeed, you may already be tracking your cat, the humidity of your tomatoes, keeping an eye on the garage, or using a black box as a back seat driver. So tell us about the monitoring tech you're using – or want to see – in the comments. It’s a bit of a cheat: the B had the extra GPIO too, but they were routed to other parts of the board and left unattached to header pins. They’ve now been corralled to extend the original two rows of GPIO pins, which retain their numbering and functionality. The upshot is that the extra pins won’t prevent existing add-ons being used: just slot them onto the first 26 pins on the board and use them as before.

What all this means is that Microsoft is finally getting close to the end of playing catch up on their OS, so people won't feel crippled changing to it from iOS or Android. That's been the biggest issue so far. Someone who hasn't used a newer generation smartphone much would be happy with WP8. (Moving from BlackBerry is easy for example, apart from getting used to an on screen keyboard.) Now there's also much less for the iOS and Android lovers to complain about.This was the long play Microsoft was going for and it's looking like they're on track. An uphill battle, but they're heading in the right direction while enterprise eagerly awaits the fully manageable and integrable mobile device. Cache in the Attic It's probably fair to say that we all have some old tech squirrelled away that we just can't bear to part with. It's not just sentimentality either, but practicality: it still works, why chuck it out? Tony Smith dusts off the Welsh home micro that was briefly a better-seller than the BBC Micro


Mine, bought in November 1982, spent the latter part of its first decade stashed away in the bottom of my wardrobe while I was off at university and then away at work. Likewise the early part of the 1990s, until my much younger half-sisters got their mitts on it in the hope it might make a worthy NES alternative. It wasn’t, and so back in the cupboard it went, until toward the end of the 1990s, in a moment of nostalgia, I reclaimed it from my dad’s place.It’s been stowed in wardrobes and under beds at the various places I’ve called home since then, occasionally being pulled out to demonstrate its ability to boot up, load tapes and play games to unbelieving adults and to kids wondering what they had instead of Xboxes in the Middle Ages.That’s not all. The arrival of Channel 5 in the old analogue TV band 36 meant that, from 1997, the Dragon’s video output signal had to elbow its way past the likes of Beyond Fear and Family Affairs. It never occurred to the old man to get the Dragon retuned when the engineer from Channel 5 popped round to move his VCR’s output away from the new TV station.


Not that it would have mattered much. Today, even with no competition from analogue transmissions, the Dragon’s output isn’t to the liking of a modern, digital telly. It’s a problem by no means unique to my machine. Poor quality output is a common failing raised by sellers of 1980s 8-bit micros, all of which primarily used an UHF signal modulator to get their picture onto a CRT TV via a coax cable hooked up to the telly’s aerial socket.These boys were never designed for a world of digital flat panels, especially those without a handy analogue manual fine-tune facility.Nor was your average cassette tape expected to keep its contents intact for 30 or more years. Surprisingly, some programs do still load, even today, which is more than you can say for the laptop-played WAV files I just tried too. Volume adjustments, messing with the cable - nothing could prevent the inevitable ?IO Errors. I suspect the tape lead is not what it once was. How long before its plastic perishes altogether?


Computer years are clearly more akin to those clocked up by dogs and cats than by people. Yes, the Dragon works, but I’ve a sense of it slipping into a frail dotage. And, let’s be honest, four-colour, 192 x 128, or two-colour, 256 x 192 games aren’t exactly the pinacle of graphical sophistication, even for 1982. Arcade-type titles have a certain retro charm, of course, by retrying the text adventures I coded back in the day reveals just how far personal computing has come since then.It’s harder now, of course - building GUIs and allocating memory were tasks we never needer to worry about in the Basic days, or even when we moved up to assembler - but richer. That said, it’s not as interactive. Even with a Raspberry Pi, oft pitched as the true successor to the early 1980s 8-bit micros, doesn’t let you key programs straight into the command line, at least not in quite the same, direct way.



Still, for all its aged fragility and anachronistic lack of sophistication, I’ll take the Dragon with me when I next move house, even though I’ve long since cleared out all my other childhood and teenage crap. It played too important a part in my formative years. I might have done better in my exams without its distractions. I certainly wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing today without it. And maybe, yes, it’s my one remaining, sentimental tie with a lost youth.Review The Asus Transformer Book T100 looks like it’s going to be surefire hit, but not because it runs a quad-core Intel Bay Trail Atom processor. And not because it’s a convertible taking on tablet form or becoming and touchscreen notebook in a snap. And not because it runs Windows 8.1 and not one of the original wishy-washy versions either. Nope, the reason has to be the price of £350 (and about $299 Stateside) with a copy of Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student thrown in.


Really, who’s going to argue with that when most Chromebooks would be a good deal bigger and lacking a touchscreen, let alone any fondleslab goodness? If you need to placate a teen with a tablet fixation during the festivities, then it would seem the T100 might stand a chance of being grudgingly accepted as their dreams of an iPad Air and a pricey Bluetooth keyboard/case combo come crashing to the ground.Sold already? Of course not. At £350 for the Asus T100, it’s not exactly a gift horse. So let’s have a good look in its gob. Open up this diminutive clamshell and you could easily mistake for a netbook of old, although nothing like as chunky.The 10.in IPS multi-touch display has a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution which works out quite nicely on this form factor. The black borders help put on a show of your fingers tapping the keys but otherwise viewing is perfectly satisfactory. I’m not sure about 178-degree viewing angle claims though, as all you really see in such a position are reflections.


The keyboard is delightfully dinky, the laptop equivalent of a toy piano – functional, but not for the big time. That said, despite being scaled down, the spacing is pretty much spot on and you can get up to quite a speed with very few forced mistakes. The keys are pleasingly sprung, almost silent and even though the base seems a bit flimsy and plasticky, it’s actually quite sturdy with no major flexing issues. Nice job, Asus.The trackpad is responsive and multitouch too, so page scrolling is an easy two-fingered affair. And yet my biggest grumble has to be the trackpad for no other reason than presses for left- and right-click make such a noise I felt quite self-conscious about using it in the office. Still, there is a workaround of course, you can use the touchscreen or a mouse too, if you like.


Apart from the actual docking hinge itself, the only interface feature of the T100 keyboard is the USB 3.0 port. The tablet has rather more to offer with micro HDMI, micro USB (for charging) and a 3.5mm mic/headphone combo port. It also has the welcome inclusion of a micro SD card slot so the 32GB internal storage isn’t the only repository here. Once formatting, Win 8.1 and Office is out of the way, 14.2GB is all you’re left with although there is a 64GB version, apparently.Still, it’s no slouch with its quad-core Intel’s 1.33GHz Atom Z3740 CPU and just 2GB of RAM to play with, the performance is a massive step up in comparison to last year’s sluggish 1.8GHz Atom Z2760. One way this showed itself was with the HDMI output. Grab yourself a micro HDMI adapter and you can have an extended desktop on the T100. I hooked it up to a 1080p monitor and played matching resolution movie content to this screen.I’d found on the older Atom Windows 8 tablets that they would stumble to deliver a sustained 1080p movie playback to an external monitor tending to freeze or slow to refresh scene changes, with 720p content proving much more stable. At least the T100 didn’t mind too much either way, although the 1080p movie viewing could have been smoother at times, but on the whole it performed reasonably well.

There’s a Pro version of the S7 in the works that will add a Haswell processor, as well as a RAID SSD setup that sounds rather tempting. In the meantime, though, the original S7 is still a fine, lightweight piece of kit.It’s a real looker, with a white-tinted Gorilla Glass top panel that measures a mere 13mm thick and keeps the weight down to just 1.3kg. The 13.3-inch touch-sensitive display provides a 1920 x 1080 resolution with a bright, sharp image and good viewing angles – although these are marred somewhat by the highly reflective gloss screen coating.The only disadvantage of the minimalist design is limited connectivity. There are just two USB 3.0 ports and no Ethernet at all – although Acer gets brownie points for bundling an USB-to-Ethernet adaptor rather than charging an extra 25 quid for it as Apple does.

Les fichiers que vous avez utilisés le plus récemment et les versions optimisées de vos photos restent sur votre Mac, pour que vous puissiez travailler hors ligne. Cela va certainement aider ceux avec les ordinateurs portables qui ne disposent pas de beaucoup d’espace de stockage.

Ce sont donc deux sont de grandes pertes, de sorte qu’il faudra vous faire votre propre avis sur le manque le moins préjudiciable pour vous.Mais alors que la PS4 s’est amincie sans rien ajouter de nouveau sur le plan matériel, la Xbox One S a quant à elle troqué son ancien disque Blu-ray standard pour un modèle Ultra-HD 4K, ce qui en fait l’un des périphériques le moins chers pour regarder des films et des séries TV en une résolution de 3 840 x 2 160 pixels.Comparer la PS4 Slim, une console offrant une résolution à 1080p, à la Xbox One S qui offre du 4K, c’est un peu comme comparer des pommes produites dans les années 1800 aux pommes aujourd’hui. Bien sûr, vous pouvez le faire, mais vous devez savoir que ça va être une compétition très inégale.



Ce que cela signifie pour la PS4 Slim est que ces augmentations de performance se trouvent principalement dans la consommation électrique, et le rendement énergétique. Cependant, sur la Xbox One S c’est complètement différent. Non seulement les jeux sur la Xbox One S passent du 1080p au 4K, mais ils se chargent effectivement plus rapidement, et ont un taux d’images par seconde plus élevé.Si le jeu est tout ce que vous aimez, que vous n’êtes pas lié à jouer à des jeux comme Bloodborne, Uncharted 4 : Among Thieves ou un jeu quelconque exclusif à la PS4, la Xbox One S est très certainement votre meilleur pari.

Cependant, les deux consoles peuvent lire du contenu au format HDR.Cependant, là où la PlayStation 4 est en avance sur la Xbox One S, est la myriade de services disponibles, commePlayStation Now et PlayStation Vue.Mais, combien allez-vous dépenser pour ces nouvelles consoles ? Étonnamment ? Pas autant que vous ne le pensez.La PS4 Slim est en vente depuis le 16 septembre, au prix de 299,99 euros pour le modèle de 500 Go, tandis que la Xbox One S est vendue à 299 euros pour son modèle de 500 Go.Voyager est bon pour l’âme. Mais, qu’en est-il de la planification de celui-ci ? Ce n’est pas la même réjouissance. Nun bringt der Entwurf den Namen iPhone X wieder ins Spiel. Eine weitere Möglichkeit wäre iPhone Edition​. Gerüchten zufolge soll Apple dieses Jahr drei neue iPhones auf den Markt bringen. Die anderen beiden Modelle könnten iPhone 7s und iPhone 7s Plus heißen und damit in der normalen Benennungstradition von Apple bleiben.


Wer das Galaxy Note 7 wegen des explodierenden Akkus nicht austauscht, bekommt nun auch in Deutschland ein Software-Update, das die Akkuleistung auf 60 Prozent reduziert.Update: Auch in Deutschland forciert Samsung nun den Austausch des Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Dies geht aus einer Meldung auf der Webseite hervor. Zuletzt hatte Samsung das Update in Südkorea verteilt. Das Update beinhaltet in Deutschland, genau wie in Südkorea, die Limitierung der Akkuleistung auf 60 Prozent. Damit werden Nutzer dazu gedrängt, dem Rückruf des Galaxy Note 7 Folge zu leisten und ihr Gerät einzuschicken.Verschiedene Nutzer des Forums Android-Hilfe haben eine Nachricht auf ihr Samsung Galaxy Note bekommen, die ein forciertes Update ankündigt. Außerdem berichten die User, dass sich das automatische Update auch nicht verhindern lasse, auch wenn man die automatische Softwareaktualisierung deaktiviert.Der Umtausch des Samsung Galaxy Note stellt unterdessen jedoch große Probleme für die Kunden dar. Problematisch ist anscheinend der Rückversand der betroffenen Geräte mit den Paketzustellern. Berichte von Betroffenen im Internet zeigen, dass in mehreren Fällen die Geräte vom Paketzusteller DHL nicht weitergesendet werden. Die Nutzer erhalten dann auch kein Austauschgerät, da dieses erst von Samsung verschickt wird wenn das betroffene Gerät bei ihnen eingeht und erfasst wurde. Die Probleme des Rückversands mit Logistikunternehmen treten ebenfalls in den USA auf. Hier durchkreuzt beispielsweise der Logistik-Riese FedEx Samsungs Umtauschpläne. Bislang gibt es keine Stellungnahmen der Logistikunternehmen.


Nach dem Bekanntwerden der Gefahr von Akkubränden und Explosionen beim Galaxy Note 7 leitete Samsung in den vergangenen Tagen eine weltweite Rückrufaktion des Geräts ein. Da sich jedoch einige Besitzer des Samsung Galaxy Note 7 anscheinend weigern, das Gerät aus den Händen zu geben, versucht Samsung nun mit einer ungewöhnlichen Methode, letzte Verbleibende mit dem Gerät zum Umtausch zu drängen.Samsung wird mittels eines Software-Updates, zum Start zumindest in Südkorea, die Akkukapazität des Galaxy Note 7 von 3.500 auf 2.100 Milli-Ampere Stunden verringern. Dies bedeutet eine Verringerung der Ladekapazität auf 60 Prozent. Das Update erscheint am 20. September und wird dann, so hofft Samsung, die restlichen Nutzer dazu bewegen, das Smartphone einzuschicken und damit dem Rückruf Folge zu leisten. Ob das Update auch nach Deutschland kommt, ist noch nicht bekannt.Ebenfalls hat Samsung dazu, wie BBC berichtet, in zwei großen südkoreanischen Zeitungen Anzeigen geschaltet, welche die Drosselung des Akkus ankündigen. Es handelt sich dabei um die Tageszeitungen Korea Joongang Daily und Seoul Shinmun.



Außerdem hat Samsung alle Fernsehwerbungen zum Galaxy Note 7 eingestellt und eine Entschuldigung an die Nutzer über südkoreanische Zeitungen herausgegeben. Noch nicht genau abschätzbar sind die finanziellen Folgen, die sich für Samsung aus dem Debakel um das Samsung Galaxy Note 7 ergeben.Kritik von Produkttestern attestierte dem MacBook Pro schlechte Akkulaufzeiten. Das neue MacBook Pro mit Touchbar-Funktion erregte vor Weihnachten einiges an Aufsehen. Kritiken der US-amerikanischen Verbraucherorganisation Consumer Reports bescheinigten dem Apple-Notebook schlechte Akku-Laufzeiten. Diese variierten in den Tests so stark, dass Consumer Reports keine Kaufempfehlung zum MacBook Pro aussprechen wollte. Nun hat sich Apple zum Testverfahren von Consumer Reports geäußert.


Das Apple-News-Portal The Loop berichtet, Apple habe Probleme beim Testverfahren bereits erkannt, als die Testergebnisse veröffentlich worden waren. Consumer Reports nutzte laut Apple beim Testverfahren versteckte Geräteeinstellungen, die eigentlich für Entwickler gedacht waren. Dadurch wurde der Browser Cache deaktiviert. Diese Funktion wird von normalen Nutzern im Alltag üblicherweise nicht verwendet, hatte im Test von Consumer Reports jedoch Auswirkungen auf die Akku-Laufzeiten. Das Abschalten des Browser Cache liefere in der Regel besser vergleichbare Ergebnisse über verschiedene Geräte hinweg und biete zudem eine größere Herausforderung für den Akku. Nachdem der Bug, der die inkonsistenten Akkulaufzeiten hervorgerufen haben soll, behoben wurde, will Consumer Reports den Test jetzt wiederholen.

Welche das sind und wie schnell das Handy in der Praxis ist, zeigt der erste Test von connect.Zunächst einmal fühlt sich das Ascend D quad sehr gut an und die gummierte Rückseite sieht elegant und keineswegs billig aus. Der chinesische Elektronikriese gehört damit zu den wenigen Smartphone-Herstellern neben Apple und Samsung, die die Prozessoren ihrer Geräte nicht bei Qualcomm oder Texas Instruments einkaufen, sondern in Eigenregie entwickeln und produzieren. Der SoC (System on Chip) besteht aus 4 Cortex-A9-Kernen, die wahlweise mit 1,2 oder 1,5 Gigahertz getaktet sind. Sie werden von einem Grafikchip (GPU) mit 16 Kernen ergänzt. Mit dieser neuen Recheneinheit will Huawei deutlich leistungsfähiger und gleichzeitig sparsamer sein als die Konkurrenz. Nach Angaben des Unternehmens ist das Ascend D quad damit fast doppelt so schnell wie alle vergleichbaren Smartphones, die aktuell auf dem Markt sind.Tatsächlich reagiert das Android-System (Ice Cream Sandwich) sehr schnell auf Fingerberührungen, das Hauptmenü oder der Homescreen lassen sich butterweich und verzögerungsfrei durchscrollen. Aber einen Unterschied zu vergleichbaren Smartphones wie dem Galaxy Nexus haben wir nicht feststellen können. Ob der Huawei-Chip wirklich so stark ist wie der Hersteller verspricht, wird sich erst zeigen, wenn man ihn an die Grenzen seiner Leistungsfähigkeit bringt, etwa durch grafisch aufwendige Spiele oder Benchmarks. Die übrige Technik ist ebenfalls State of the Art. Neben Wlan mit DLNA, GPS, HSPA und Bluetooth 3.0 steht auch eine 8-Megapixel-Kamera auf der Ausstattungliste. Bei einem echten Garantiefall kann es sein, dass der Hersteller die Beschädigung als Verletzung der Gewährleistung ansieht, auch wenn es nur zum Zwecke des Akkuwechsels war. Ein weiterer Hinderungsgrund ist die Gefahr, das Smartphone beim Wechseln zu beschädigen.
