Das Medion Akoya E 2228 T ist ein so genanntes 360-Grad-Notebook mit einem 11,6-Zoll-Touchscreen. Im Notebook-Modus kann man es per Tatstaur, Tablet oder Touchscreen steuern. Dreht man den Bildschirm auf den "Rücken" des Notebooks, hat man ein Tablet, wenn auch ein ziemlich dickes. Aufgeklappt und Aufgestellt wie ein Zelt dient es als Mini-Monitor für Videos. 11,6 Zoll sind allerdings reichlich knapp bemessen für echten Filmgenuss.

Für Rechenpower sorgt ein Intel Atom-Prozessor X5-Z8350 mit 64 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher; und 4 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher. Über die Grafikeinheit machen Medion und Aldi Nord leider keine Angaben.


An Bords ist auf jeden Fall das aktuelle Windows 10 in der Home-Version, dazu kommt Office 365 für eine Person im Abo und ein Jahr lang kostenlos. Das Medion Akoya besitzt eine eingebaute HD-Webkamera mit Mikrofon zum Beispiel für Videotelefonate.


Für Sicherheit soll ein eingebauter Fingerabdruck-Sensor sorgen, der seinen Besitzer an der Fingerkuppe erkennt. Für guten Klang HD-Audio mit zwei eingebauten Lautsprechern. Als Ausgänge stehen miniHDMI, USB 2.0 und 3.0 sowie ein Kartenleser für microSD-Speicherkarten zur Verfügung.

Fazit: Ein gut ausgestattetes Notebook für viele Einsatzmöglichkeiten, nur für schnelle Spiele dürfte die Grafikleistung nicht ausreichen. Wie lange das Notebook mit einer Akkuladung durchhält, bleibt das Geheimnis des Herstellers. Ebenso die Auflösung des Displays. Ein Schnäppchen mit vielen Fragezeichen also.

13 geräuschreduzierenden Kopfhörer ohne Kabel schnitten im Test nicht nur teure Modelle mit der Note "gut" ab. Auch günstige Modelle ab 130 Euro schafften die Gesamtnote "gut". Für guten Klang müssen Käufer mindestens 160 Euro ausgeben.



Geräuschreduzierende Kopfhörer der Bauweise "over the ears" sollen Lärm aussperren und gut klingen. Sie sind prima für Pendler und den Einsatz in Bahn, Bus oder Flugzeug geeignet. Im Straßenverkehr sollen sie dagegen nicht aufgesetzt werden, denn sie machen "taub" gegen Straßengeräusche.

Die gute Nachricht: Alle 13 durch Stiftung Warentest (Ausgabe 5/2018) untersuchten Funk-Kopfhörer mit aktiver Geräuschunterdrückung ("Noise cancelling") schafften die Gesamtnote "gut". Das günstigste Modell (Philips SHB 9850 NC) ist von 2017 und kostet knapp 130 Euro. Teilweise wird es sogar schon für 87 Euro angeboten.


Wer Wert auf guten Klang und gute Geräuschunterdrückung legt, sollte sich Sennheisers HD 4.50 BTNC näher ansehen. Er kostet im Schnitt 160 Euro und schaffte bei den Testpunkten Ton und Geräuschunterdrückung die Note "gut".



Testsieger aus der 300-Euro-Klasse

Testsieger wurden zwei Modelle aus der 300-Euro-Klasse: Boses überarbeiteter Quietcomfort 35 II (rund 335 Euro) und der Sony WH-1000 XM2 (etwa 310 Euro).

Die Festplatte des Mac ist voll, der Rechner wird immer langsamer. Wo die ganzen Speicherfresser liegen, ist vielen Nutzern nicht klar. Hilfe gibt es vom Dienstprogramm "Speicher verwalten".



Es lässt sich über einen Rechtsklick auf das Festplattensymbol auf dem Schreibtisch aufrufen. In der folgenden Auflistung werden dann die verschiedenen Dateitypen und ihre Größe angezeigt. Per Klick in die Kategorien kommt man zu den Dateien selbst und kann sie bei Bedarf löschen.

Außerdem haben Nutzer über das Dienstprogramm die Möglichkeit, Dateien in Apples "iCloud" auszulagern, eine automatische Löschung des Papierkorbs einzurichten oder über die Funktion "Chaos reduzieren" Dokumente auf verzichtbare oder doppelte Einträge zu durchsuchen.

Kein Festplatten-Symbol auf Desktop?


Ist das Festplatten-Symbol auf dem Desktop nicht zu sehen, öffnet man den Finder und klickt in der Menüleiste auf "Finder" und "Einstellungen".

Erwartet wurde es für den 10. April, doch das Spring Creators Update von Windows 10 lässt Nutzer warten. Der Grund für die Verspätung soll ein Fehler in der Software sein.

Um ein reibungsloses Upgrade zu garantieren, sollte man vorher sicher gehen, dass Windows auf dem neuesten Stand ist. Wurde das letzte Herbst Creators Update bereits installiert? Falls nicht, muss das zuerst nachgeholt werden. Um die Versionsnummer herauszufinden, drücken Sie die Windows-Taste, geben "winver" ein und drücken Enter. In dem aufpoppenden Fenster sollte die Versionsnummer 1709 stehen.


Stellen Sie sicher, dass auch alle wichtigen Sicherheits-Updates eingespielt wurden und holen Sie dies gegebenenfalls nach. Dazu nutzen Sie wie gewohnt die "nach Updates suchen"-Funktion.


Läuft alles nach Plan, werden durch das Upgrade sämtliche Einstellungen, Software und Treiber übernommen und sind auch unter dem neuen Windows sofort wieder einsatzbereit. So schleppt man aber auch viele Altlasten von Version zu Version. Das nimmt unnötig Speicherplatz in Anspruch und kann auch zu Problemen führen. Das "Speicherplatz freigeben"-Tool unter Windows hilft dabei, nicht mehr benötigte Dateileichen zu entfernen.


Die Funktion "Focus Assist" blockiert E-Mails und Nachrichten von sozialen Netzwerken oder Messaging-Apps, erlaubt aber auch Filter für erwünschte Botschaften und zeigt eine Zusammenfassung eingehender Nachrichten. Weitere Neuheiten sind frische Funktionen für den Edge-Browser und eine neue Diktierfunktion.


Nutzer können ab dem 30. April das Update unter "Systemsteuerung", "System Sicherheit","Windows Update" und "Nach Updates suchen" selbst anfordern. Wer das Update nicht selbst installieren will, kann warten bis Microsoft es über die Update-Funktion von Windows 10 verbreitet. Dann wird es automatisch installiert. Dies soll aber erst ab dem 8. Mai geschehen.



Während der Installation des Updates legt Windows einen Ordner namens "Windows.old" an. Darin befindet sich ein Systemabbild der Vorgängerversion. Das dient der Sicherheit, denn sollte etwas schief gehen, lässt sich das System wieder in den vorherigen Zustand zurücksetzen. In den Einstellungen findet sich dann unter dem Punkt "Wiederherstellung" der Befehl "Zur vorherigen Version von Windows 10 zurückkehren". Der Nachteil: Der Ordner belegt reichlich Speicherplatz.


Wenn man also mit dem neuen Windows zufrieden ist und keine Probleme mit Software und Hardware hat, möchte man sich des Ordners vielleicht entledigen. Aber Vorsicht: Es gibt keinen Weg zurück. Ein Downgrade ist nach dem Entfernen von Windows.old nicht mehr möglich.


Aus gutem Grund lässt sich der Windows.old-Ordner deshalb nicht wie normale Dateien löschen. Stattdessen muss man die "Datenträgerbereinigung" aufrufen und dort "Systemdateien bereinigen" für das betreffende Laufwerk auswählen. Nach einem Suchlauf wird neben anderen Optionen auch "vorherige Windows-Installationen" zur Löschung angeboten. Dadurch wird man das datenschwere Vermächtnis los.


Am letzten Apriltag veröffentlicht Microsoft das lang erwartete nächste Update für Windows 10. Es bringt zahlreiche neue Funktionen und soll die Sicherheit des beliebten Betriebssystems erhöhen.



Das nächste große Update für Windows 10 steht ab dem 30. April zum Download bereit. Das teilt Microsoft mit. Das "April 2018 Update" genannte Softwarepaket ist für Computer mit aktiviertem Windows 10 kostenlos verfügbar. Es soll vor allem für mehr Sicherheit und höhere Produktivität sorgen.

Zu den neuen Funktionen gehört unter anderem eine neue Timeline, die Aktivitäten für die vergangenen 30 Tage chronologisch anzeigt. So lassen sich Bearbeitungsschritte in Dokumenten besser nachvollziehen und Änderungen rückgängig machen. Mit aktivem Microsoft-Account klappt das auch auf verbundenen Mobilgeräten.

Disposable paper cups might not sound like they’re all that bad compared to, say, plastic bags or Keurig pods, but despite their recyclability, most of them still end up in landfills. Therefore, as part of the ongoing movement to phase out single-use items, a duo from London has developed a solution: A cleverly designed cup that, thanks to its unique shape, is capable of collapsing so you can take it along wherever you go, and avoid using disposable cups in the first place.


Smart rings certainly aren’t a new idea at this point, but this one is arguably one of the best yet. In addition to boasting all the requisite “smart” features we’ve come to expect from wrist-borne wearables — things like step tracking, heart rate monitoring, and sleep monitoring — it’s also small enough that it doesn’t get in the way. That’s the big deal here. Unlike most smart rings we’ve seen in the past, this one is actually quite slim and discreet. Yet, despite its impressively small dimensions, it somehow packs enough battery power to last for two full days between charges.


Instant cameras are all the rage right now. Maybe it’s nostalgia for the Polaroid days of yore, maybe it’s a manifestation of our subconscious lust for tangibility in a world where everything is digital. Who knows. But regardless of the reasoning behind it, instant cameras are enjoying something of a renaissance right now. Jollybook is the latest entry into this booming subcategory, and it’s designed with an aesthetic that’s even more vintage than the Polaroid cameras that started the trend.


Who doesn’t love a good map book? This one is probably a bit different than ones you’ve seen in the past, though, since it’s all about a different planet than the one you and I inhabit. “The Mars Atlas is the first of its kind publication containing stunningly detailed maps of the entire Martian surface,” the book’s creators explain. “Designed by a team of astrocartographers, the Atlas lets you unleash your inner explorer and learn about the Red Planet til your heart’s content. No longer science fiction, now you can discover Martian mountains, valleys, and riverbeds – many of which are still unnamed.”



Single-use items are going the way of the dodo. It started with plastic grocery bags. Then we moved on to plastic straws. More recently, there’s been a movement to eradicate things like plastic utensils, cling wrap, and even cotton swabs. Now, if Last Tissue has its way, the next one on the chopping block will be single-use facial wipes like Kleenex tissues. How? To make that possible, the company has developed a nifty reusable handkerchief system that makes using old-school cloth hankies a bit more convenient and sanitary than before.


Litter boxes are hardly ever well-designed. Most are just injection-molded plastic boxes built for the sole purpose of holding kitty litter. But they could (and should) do so much more. That’s the thinking behind Cove — a thoughtfully designed litter box that comes with integrated tools (like a scooper and a broom to clean up stray litter bits) that address the realities of owning a cat and cleaning up after it.


If you haven’t heard of Nebia by now, you’ve been living under a rock. The company basically makes crazy-efficient showerheads that use 65 percent less water than a traditional showerhead — yet still manage to douse you well enough to provide a proper shower experience. After two massively successful Kickstarter campaigns, it’s back with a third-generation product — this time created in partnership with Moen. If you’re in the market for a water-saving showerhead, look no further.


This thing looks pretty sweet. It’s essentially a little electronic brick that, thanks to some super clever engineering, allows you to use gesture control with any screen — regardless of whether it’s “smart” or not. The secret? Lidar: the same technology that self-driving cars use to “see” their surroundings. Using this tech, it tracks what you’re doing with your hands, translates those motions into commands, and then relays them to whatever screen you’ve connected it to. Pretty cool, right?



Headlamps are a dime a dozen these days. They come in just about every shape, size, and configuration you could ever need, and no matter what sport you’re into, there’s probably one designed specifically for that activity — unless of course, you need one that’s sweatproof. Practically all of them are equipped with elastic fabric headbands, which tend to soak up sweat and get gross over time. But not this one! The Bilby is 100% silicone (and waterproof, too!), so it won’t absorb your forehead sweat.

"Das Tolle an Künstlicher Intelligenz ist, dass man der Maschine nicht sagen muss, was genau sie analysieren soll", sagt Naroa Zurutuza, Datenwissenschaftlerin in Unicefs Innovationswerkstatt. Das Computerprogramm findet, wenn es mit genügend Daten gefüttert wird, von selbst Zusammenhänge heraus. Sie betont: es würden nur anonymisierte Daten verwendet, die Privatsphäre sei stets geschützt.


"Innovationen mit ungeheurer Schubkraft" hat Maurizio Vecchione im Visier. Er leitet den von Microsoft-Gründer Bill Gates finanzierten "Global Goods Fund" bei der Innovationsfirma Intellectual Ventures. Er will Technologielösungen für die ärmsten Menschen der Welt finden. Schwerpunkt ist der medizinische Bereich.


"In Entwicklungsländern fehlen Ärzte und Spezialisten. Wir haben uns gefragt: Kann man Entscheidungshilfen entwickeln, die Spezialisten ersetzen können?" Seine Antwort: ja. Ein Computer könne mithilfe Künstlicher Intelligenz eingefütterte Daten verarbeiten und Diagnosen mindestens so präzise stellen wie ein Spezialist. Es gebe schon Ultraschallgeräte, die an ein Handy angeschlossen werden können. Mit Vitalwerten wie Puls, Temperatur und Fotos könne ein Programm selbst einem nur oberflächlich ausgebildeten Krankenpfleger in den meisten Fällen genügend Entscheidungshilfe für Diagnose und Behandlung bieten.


"Auch in reichen Ländern werden 80 Prozent der Krankheitsfälle mit ziemlich einfachen Interventionen behandelt," sagt Vecchione. "Auch 80 Prozent der Patienten, die Spezialisten wie einen Kardiologen sehen, bekommen nur Medikamente." Es gebe schon Diagnoseprogramme, die bei Versuchen öfter richtig lägen als Top-Spezialisten.


Der "Global Fund" ist überzeugt, dass solche Programme die Gesundheitsversorgung in den ärmsten Ländern revolutionieren können – und womöglich auch in reichen Ländern. In Entwicklungsländern vergibt der Fonds die Lizenz umsonst, reichere müssen zahlen. Vecchione betont, dass in Entwicklungsländern dafür natürlich Strom- und Mobilfunknetze ausgebaut werden müssen.


"Natürlich ist Maschinenlernen nicht so simpel, dass man jede Menge Daten ins Smartphone lädt und es dann eine Lösung ausspuckt", sagt Vecchione. Die Grundinformationen, mit denen Computer gefüttert werden, um dann zu lernen, was aus den Daten zu schließen ist, müssten sehr präzise entwickelt werden. In vielen Bereichen fehle es auch einfach an genügend Daten, sagt Zurutuza. Manchmal seien Erkenntnisse aus Daten nicht auf die ganze Bevölkerung zu übertragen. Vecchione und Zurutuza sehen aber beide enormes Potenzial.


"Künstliche Intelligenz bietet ungeahnte Möglichkeiten, Hunger und Armut auszuradieren und den Verfall der Natur aufzuhalten", sagt Chaesub Lee, Direktor für Standardisierung bei der Internationalen Fernmeldeunion (ITU), die die Konferenz in Genf veranstaltet.



Beim Arbeiten fallen ihnen immer die Augen zu? Das könnte an der Farbtemperatur des Bildschirms liegen. Richtig eingestellt, wirkt es natürlicher und schont die Augen.


Als ideale Einstellung gilt dabei eine Farbtemperatur von 6500 Kelvin. Das berichtet das "PC Magazin" (Ausgabe 6/2016). So eingestellt, erscheint die Anzeige bei normalem Tageslicht am natürlichsten.


In den Bildschirmeinstellungen der meisten Displays können Sie die Farbtemperatur händisch anpassen - etwa wenn es im Raum besonders warmes oder besonders kaltes Licht gibt. Verringert man die Farbtemperatur, wird dem Bild mehr rotes Licht beigemischt, dann wirkt es optisch wärmer. Bei einer höheren Farbtemperatur überwiegen die eher kalt wahrgenommenen Blauanteile.


Die Einstellungen finden sich im Menü der Bildschirmoptionen häufig unter Begriffen wie "Bildeinstellungen" oder "Farben". Einige Bildschirme ermöglichen auch individuelle Einstellungen der Farbanteile von Rot, Grün oder Blau.

Skateboards are an undeniably great tool for getting around a city, but they also take a fair amount of practice to get comfortable with — and a large chunk of that practice is usually spent learning how to brake properly. Freebord circumvents that problem with a super clever truck and caster wheel system that allows you to more easily execute a slide brake — much like you would on a snowboard. This is the fifth generation of this design, and as someone who’s ridden (and crashed!) the first generation a few times, I’m here to tell you that this looks like a massive improvement.


If there’s one thing there will always be plenty of on Kickstarter, it’s desk toys. Specifically, desk toys that are made of machined metal and designed to showcase some sort of inspiring physical or mechanical phenomenon. Impossible Table fits that description to a T. It’s a machined metal desk toy that showcases the concept of tensegrity: the characteristic property of a stable three-dimensional structure consisting of members under tension that are contiguous and members under compression that are not.


Solar powered bike lights aren’t exactly a new idea at this point, but they also aren’t particularly common. Why? Because up until fairly recently, small solar panels simply couldn’t soak up enough energy quickly enough to be useful in a bike light. This one is different. Thanks to its high-end solar panel and low-power LED bulb, Litta can completely charge itself in just a few hours, and will work for years to come without ever needing to be pugged in — even if you live in an area that doesn’t get a ton of direct sunshine.


Robots that teach kids how to code are a dime a dozen these days. Most are just a slightly different take on the same exact idea, but Locomoco is different. Of all the coding robots we have ever seen on Kickstarter, it’s arguably one of the coolest. Why? Well, in addition to looking and functioning like a normal toy train set, it’s also designed to teach kids (or adults!) the fundamentals of coding and computer logic without forcing them to stare dead-eyed into a tablet or smartphone screen. As such, it allows users to learn through a more tactile and hands-on process.



Warning: this keyboard will piss you off. Why? Because it’s so simple that it makes you wonder why no computer or peripherals manufacturer has done something like this already. It’s a keyboard equipped with all the ports you could ever need: HDMI, USB, SD, USB C, and a handful of others. This essentially means you can it into anything, plug anything into it, and won’t have to reach to the back of your computer tower every time you want to to insert a flash drive or plug in a new display. Seriously, why isn’t this already a standard design feature on all keyboards?


This is totally one of those artsy, high-concept Kickstarter projects that probably doesn’t have mass appeal, but is also so fun and far-out that I couldn’t resist including it in this roundup. Here’s the idea: if you order one, the creators basically take the guts out of a Casio F-91W and permanently cast it into a transparent resin case. Once that’s done, you can’t mess with it. No buttons, no functions, no nothing. Much like time itself, it is immutable and beyond your control. It’ll just keep going until it runs out of battery and dies.


Ultrasona is a portable ultrasonic washing machine. Sounds crazy, right? Here’s how it works: When submerged in water and switched on, the device’s transducer sends out ultrasonic vibrations, creating tiny cavitation bubbles in the water that violently agitate dirt, grime, and bacteria on whatever you’re washing — simultaneously washing and disinfecting it. This exact same technology is used at a larger scale in chemistry laboratories, where it’s known as sonication. With Ultrasona, you can finally get this tech in a convenient and totally portable form factor. Imagine — you could wash your clothes in a hotel sink!



If you haven’t heard of Rocketbook yet, you’re missing out. The company makes these amazing notebooks that are infinitely reusable, and also allow you to sync/save your notes to the cloud. I’m a big fan. The company’s latest product, however, isn’t a notebook at all — it’s a legal pad outfitted with a single, infinitely reusable sheet for your notes. No more wasting paper just so you can write stuff down!

Seit Anfang Mai verteilt Microsoft in Wellen ein neues Funktionsupdate für Windows 10. Nach der Installation des Upgrades, das das Betriebssystem auf Version 1803 hebt, sollten Nutzer die Datenschutzeinstellungen genau prüfen. Sie lassen sich mit der Kombination "Windows" und "i"-Taste öffnen.

Dort sind neue Punkte wie etwa ein Aktivitätsverlauf hinzugekommen, berichtet das "c't"-Fachmagazin (Ausgabe 12/18). Das bedeutet, dass Windows sich merkt, welche Anwendungen zuletzt genutzt und welche Dateien bearbeitet wurden, wenn der Verlauf aktiviert ist.


Datenschutzeinstellungen können zurückgesetzt werden

Zudem kann es sein, dass einige, bereits getroffene Datenschutzeinstellungen nach dem Update wieder zurückgesetzt sind. Auf Testrechnern stellten die Experten dieses Verhalten etwa bei den Einstellungen zum Datenschutz für die Kamera oder das Mikrofon fest.


Für die Verbesserung des Datenschutzes bieten viele Hersteller Programme an, zum Beispiel das kostenlose "O&O ShutUp10". Es ermöglicht Nutzern zu kontrollieren und einzustellen, welche Komfortfunktionen von Windows 10 sie nutzen und welche Datenweitergabe sie abstellen wollen.


Die Preise von Grafikkarten kennen seit vielen Monaten nur noch eine Richtung: aufwärts. Dadurch werden auch leistungsfähige Heimcomputer teurer. Was steckt dahinter und wann lohnt sich der Kauf trotzdem?


Dass ein leistungsfähiger Desktop-PC nicht gerade günstig ist, überrascht nicht. Doch seit geraumer Zeit hat sich der Neukauf eines Rechners zu einem ganz besonders kostspieligen Unterfangen entwickelt. Der Grund: Die Preise für Grafikkarten befinden sich im Höhenflug und übersteigen bei vielen Modellen den ursprünglichen Kostenpunkt mittlerweile um das Zwei- bis Vierfache.



Martin Fischer vom Fachportal "Heise Online" hat vor allem einen Grund für die Preisspirale identifiziert: Kryptomining, also das Erzeugen von Kryptowährungen wie Ethereum oder Bitcoin, die zeitweise schon wertvoller als Gold waren. "Weil man diese wertvolle Kryptowährung mit eigener Hardware schürfen kann, haben sich viele Menschen dazu entschieden, genau das zu tun", erklärt Fischer. Alles, was man dazu braucht, sind Grafikkarten.


Vor allem in Ostasien haben sich Fischer zufolge industrieartige Anlagen gebildet, die Tausende Grafikkarten schürfen lassen. Schnell lernen die sogenannten Kryptofarmen, dass einige Modelle besser geeignet sind als andere. "Ideale Grafikkarten müssen eine gewisse Rechenleistung bieten, damit die Kryptoeinheiten relativ flott erzeugt werden können", sagt der Experte. "Gleichzeitig dürfen sie keine allzu hohe Leistungsaufnahme haben, weil das den Stromverbrauch hochtreibt, wenn viele Grafikkarten zusammengeschaltet werden."


Das führt dazu, dass Farmen mit ihren Großeinkäufen für Engpässe auf dem Markt sorgen und die Preise steigen können. "Das Problem dabei ist natürlich, dass es nur eine endliche Zahl von Grafikkarten und Chips gibt, die auf dem Markt sind", führt Fischer aus. "Die Hersteller AMD und Nvidia produzieren festgelegte Mengen, die vorher genau kalkuliert und an der Nachfrage orientiert werden." Die riesige Nachfrage habe dazu geführt, dass die Karten teurer wurden und ihre Verfügbarkeit deutlich abnahm.

Das sei zwar eine spannende Technik, aber die Hersteller von HBM-Speicher konnten nicht so schnell produzieren, wie es für die Massenproduktion dieser AMD-Grafikkarten notwendig gewesen wäre, erklärt Fischer. "Insgesamt hatte das zur Folge, dass beispielsweise die Grafikkarte Radeon RX Vega 56 für einen Preis von 400 Euro angesetzt wurde." Tatsächlich liegt der Einstiegspreis nun aber bei 620 Euro – 55 Prozent mehr also. "Und da ist auch nicht absehbar, dass das deutlich billiger wird", so Fischer weiter.

With this feature, you can share your screen with a partner or small group and never have to fight over who gets to see what’s on screen. Its Intel Celeron N4000 processor with 4GB of RAM is a huge upgrade from the Samsung’s N3060 in that it can match some Intel i5 models in operating frequency, giving you more leeway over what you can and can’t do simultaneously. With 10 uninterrupted hours of battery life, you can leave the charger behind because this can last a respectably long amount of time unplugged.


The Lenovo C340 Chromebook also comes with two USB 3.0 and USB-C ports each, with a Micro-SD card reader, so you can future-proof your studies. It also has a 720p webcam and mic for any video calls and voice conferences. The biggest selling point, however, is its 360-degree flip-and-fold design that allows you to transform your Chromebook to fit a variety of purposes like the flat tabletop and reverse pyramid presentation functions. This is when the touch-screen capabilities really shine as you never have to fidget with the touchpad for maximum versatility and utility. The biggest weakness is its 32GB eMMC flash memory, but this is easily remedied by an external hard drive. So, if you don’t mind the limited storage or already have a storage upgrade on-hand, then this is a non-issue. You can find the Lenovo C340 2-in-1 Touch-Screen Chromebook on Best Buy where it’s discounted at $259.


If an 11.6-inch screen isn’t enough for your needs, then starting with the Acer Spin 15 2-in-1 Touch-Screen Chromebook, you’re getting a huge increase in screen size with its 15.6-inch display. Not only that, but the features are far better and definitely justify the jump in price. The 15.6-inch display isn’t as compact as the previous entries, but you’re getting a noticeable increase in visual quality. However, this upgrade also ups the weight to just below 4.9 pounds, so carrying it around will be a bit more difficult than with an 11.6-inch Chromebook.



This Chromebook is the first on our list to boast Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, giving you a superb viewing experience no matter what’s displayed on-screen. This is further bolstered by the CineCrystal technology coupled with IPS panels to maximize video and image quality with exceptional color accuracy from every angle. If you’ll be watching videos just as much as you’ll be studying, then this is an excellent buy. While the built-in Intel HD Graphics 505 doesn’t perform as well as other laptops, it can still comfortably handle simple web tasks and photo editing.


In terms of processing power, the Intel Pentium N4200 with 4GB of RAM can be compared to modern Intel i3 or older i5 models. This means that, while it still can’t handle any heavy-duty tasks, basic everyday web apps can run decently well in moderation. While that often means you must fork out a little extra, that’s not the case right now. Best Buy has slashed the price of HP’s classy Chromebook by a tasty $200, bringing its price down to $399. That makes it ideal if you want an affordable laptop that looks the part while you work from home.

What do you get with this deal? The model in question comes outfitted with a dual-core Intel Core i3-8130U processor, 8GB of memory, and 64GB of eMMC storage. That’s a lot better than you’d normally expect to get with a Chromebook, most of which are often equipped with Intel Celeron or Pentium chips and 4GB of RAM.


Elsewhere, you get two USB-C ports, a USB-A port, a Micro-SD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. And as the x360 name implies, HP’s Chromebook can be flipped over and used as a 2-in-1 tablet. That gives it an extra degree of flexibility that could come in very handy if you want to make use of its touchscreen capabilities.


If you want to have a larger display at your disposal and need powerful specs to go along with it, the Asus VivoBook 15 is a great choice. Right now, you can get one for $440, knocking $29 off the price. While the saving isn’t as high as with the HP Chromebook, the deal itself is a corker, since you get so much power in return for your money.


For starters, the Asus VivoBook 15 comes with a spacious, immersive 15.6-inch 1080p display with a slimline bezel, giving you plenty of space to work in. While it’s not foldable like the HP, the extra screen real estate will be noticeable in your day-to-day work.

But it’s the internal specs that make this deal truly impressive. The model we’ve highlighted comes with an AMD Ryzen 3 3200U processor, a discrete AMD Radeon Vega 3 graphics chip, a whopping 16GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. At this price point, that’s an unbelievable bargain.

Having so much memory will make multitasking an absolute breeze, which is essential if you need it to work from home. The roomy 256GB drive is also an SSD as opposed to eMMC storage, giving it an edge in terms of speed.

Kuo reckons this tech will launch in the 14.1-inch MacBook Pro and a refreshed MacBook Pro 16, as well as a 27-inch ‌iMac Pro‌, a 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, a 10.2-inch ‌iPad‌, and a 7.9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini. This belief was recently backed up by a report from Taiwanese publication DigiTimes. Packing so many LEDs into a MacBook Pro display will result in exceptional HDR performance, wide color, and high contrast, while also avoiding the burn-in problems that OLED panels can experience. All in all, that should help take Apple’s MacBook Pro displays to another level entirely.


There are a few caveats. For one thing, Kuo understandably expects such advanced tech to cost an arm and a leg, so it won’t make it to every Apple device. Kuo also predicts a launch date of late 2020 to somewhere around the middle of 2021, meaning we may have to wait a little longer for this super display. Although Kuo doesn’t believe the Mini-LED MacBook Pro will be delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, a recent China Times report claimed the opposite, suggesting mass production of the panels won’t start until 2021. We will have to see who turns out to be correct.


It’s no secret that Apple has become frustrated with Intel, as the chip manufacturer has often struggled to meet deadlines, resulting in MacBooks launching without the latest and greatest processors inside them. It seems that Apple has just about run out of patience, and could well be looking elsewhere for its MacBook Pro processors. The question is which alternative it’ll settle on.


Though sticking with Intel is most likely, the leading replacement candidate is AMD. In February 2020, MacOS beta code was unearthed that referred to numerous AMD processors and graphics chips, including “Renoir,” which is a code name for AMD’s Ryzen 4000-series processors. The U series chips offer up to eight cores and 16 threads while using a tiny 25 watts of power. While it’s possible Apple was just testing them out and has no intention of using them in future Macs, Renoir’s power-to-performance ratio seems perfect for a top-end machine like the MacBook Pro.



Apple demands very power-efficient parts for the MacBook Pro to enable it to be almost silent during most operations, and these chips would be easily efficient enough for Apple’s taste. Bringing these eight-core U-series processors to the 13-inch MacBook Pro could revolutionize what creative professionals could do with a smaller laptop.


What about ARM? Rumors of Apple switching its processors from Intel to ARM have been floating around for years, but it looks like late 2020 or early 2021 could be the time this finally becomes reality according to a report from Ming-Chi Kuo. Both Bloomberg and Axios have reported that Apple is well underway with the switch, codenamed Kalamata, and Apple has proved that its own ARM-based chips are capable due to their superb performance in devices like the iPad Pro.


There’s another reason Apple may switch to ARM, and interestingly enough it comes not from the world of hardware — but of software. The clue here is Project Catalyst, Apple’s ongoing effort to make iOS apps work on the Mac. The project has started with iPad apps making the leap first, and supposedly will expand to include iPhone apps in 2020. The eventual goal is to allow any app work on any Apple platform. Apple could be hoping to facilitate this by outfitting all of its devices with ARM chips. This would make life massively easier for app developers, who could work on apps knowing they’d be running on the same architecture regardless of the device.


While Apple’s ARM-based A-series chips have shown impressive performance, it’s unknown how well they would stack up against the high-end Intel or AMD chips worthy of the MacBook Pro. Former Apple senior executive Jean-Louis Gassée has raised an interesting point: Ampere Computing already sells high-powered ARM chips that can compete with Intel Xeon processors, thus potentially paving the way for even the Mac Pro to switch to Apple-made chips.

Added to that is a report from Bloomberg that claimed Apple is actively working on an ARM MacBook with a 12-core processor inside, and that the company is looking beyond 12 cores for future models. If such a processor were to make it to the MacBook Pro, things could get very interesting.



Still, we expect that Apple will probably debut ARM chips in the MacBook Air (potentially at the Worldwide Developers Conference), which is a safer bet given in the MacBook Air performance is less important, then perhaps transition the MacBook Pro to ARM at a later date.


There are a few other things that we’d love to see on the 2020 MacBook Pro. While not all of these have been rumored, we wouldn’t be surprised to see any of them in the next iteration of the device.Top of our list has to be Face ID. While the iPhone has had Face ID (and Windows has had Windows Hello) for a while now, Apple’s MacBooks have been bereft of this tech for far too long.

The 16GB eMMC storage might be a bit small, however, if you plan on using the Chromebook 15 for the long run. Thankfully, the Acer Chromebook 15 comes with two USB 3.0 ports and an SD card reader, so you can make use of an external storage upgrade. It also comes with an HDR webcam and upward-facing stereo speakers, so you won’t miss out on any video conferences or online lectures. With a weight of 4.41 pounds, you can comfortably take this Chromebook around without breaking your back — or your bank account. If you’re interested, you can check it out on Best Buy where it’s currently on sale for only $219.


For only an extra $11 more than the Acer Chromebook 15, the HP Chromebook 14 offers marginally better features and, arguably, a more stylish chassis. The screen is downsized to 14 inches, making it a more portable option without ruining picture quality with an excessively small display. Like the Acer, it also uses the industry-standard 1,366 x 768 resolution. The smaller display reduces pixelation and provides a clearer picture than it would have with larger screens, making it feel as though it were high definition. Additionally, it has a touchscreen display, so you can maximize efficiency by touching what you need instead of fidgeting with a track pad or mouse.


The AMD A4-9120C processor is its biggest downside due to its noticeable weakness in processing power and overall performance, even with 4GB of RAM, so jumps from tab to tab can become an annoyance after a while. But if you won’t be handling intensive tasks, and are mostly reading, browsing, or typing, then you shouldn’t feel a hit to your productivity. The battery life is only roughly nine and a half hours, which is nearly three hours less than the Acer Chromebook 15, but if you won’t be using it non-stop for each working day, then this should be more than enough runtime to get you through.


The integrated AMD Radeon R4 graphics card isn’t the best either, but simple online games can run just fine. However, video editing is off the table.

In terms of storage, the HP Chromebook 14 doubles the Acer’s capacity with its 32GB eMMC, allowing you to hold twice the number of files and documents. This reduces the need for external storage devices for a good while, but you will likely still need one eventually.



It doesn’t have any USB 3.0 ports though, only two USB 2.0 and USB 3.1/3.2 ports each. This means that while it drastically lags behind when it comes to Type-A ports, the Chromebook is totally future-proof. You also won’t be left out of online teleconferences with the built-in microphone, webcam, and speakers. It’s only slightly heavier than the Acer with a weight of around 4.6 pounds, so you can take it with you wherever you need it. You can check out the HP Chromebook 14 at B&H Photo where it’s on sale for $230, letting you save $50 from its retail price.


If both of the previous options were too bulky, or if you don’t need the extra size but still want all the power that comes with it, then the Dell Chromebook 3100 should definitely be at the top of your priority list. Unlike the Acer and HP, this one has a much smaller 11.6-inch display. This allows the 1,366 x 768 resolution screen to appear in better quality with lesser pixelation. The screen is on the small side though, so it’s not for those with weak eyesight. It’s also equipped with anti-glare technology that allows you to work in any light setting. The keyboard is also designed to withstand minor spills and tumbles, so clumsy hands while working at the dinner table or walking around are nothing to worry about.


The Dell Chromebook 3100 uses an Intel Celeron N4000 processor with 4GB of RAM, which would normally be considered weak on average laptops — but on Chromebooks, it’s more than competent enough. It doesn’t work at the same efficiency as a regular laptop, but it can definitely handle multitasking and moderate tab-hopping just fine. The insane 14-hour battery life also reduces charging times per day to one at most. This way, you can work for every hour you’re awake — school or no school — and still not need to charge. And while its Intel UHD Graphics 600 card isn’t the most astounding, it can handle undemanding games and video-watching without a hitch.



Like the HP Chromebook 14, this Dell Chromebook 3100 also uses a 32GB eMMC for its storage, so you can download and store as many files, books, and documents as you need. You’ll still need an additional storage upgrade in the future, but the included space is more than enough for casual educational use. For its ports, it uses two USB 3.1 and USB Type-C ports each on both sides for increased connectivity with multiple devices.


Lastly, the Dell Chromebook 3100’s screen can be flipped and rotated as you’d like, letting you convert it to fit a variety of purposes. If you want a reliable Chromebook that’s kid-proof and future-proof, the Dell Chromebook 3100 is available on their site for $109 off its retail price, leaving it at an affordable $269.


The HP Chromebook X360 11 G1 is the last on our list, but is definitely not the least. It’s the only Chromebook on our list to feature a clean white facade, which means it already starts off strong with bonus style points. Its 11.6-inch screen is optimal for bringing it around, both in the classroom and at home, as it’s neither too heavy — weighing in at 2.87 pounds — nor too attention-grabbing. As is typical for Chromebooks, it uses a 1,366 x 768 resolution touchscreen display.

This laptop is powered by an AMD Ryzen 3 processor that works alongside 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD. This isn’t the most powerful laptop chipset out there, so don’t expect it to be capable of taking on all computing tasks. The IdeaPad S145 is really designed for light use such as web browsing, emailing, or document writing, and not much else. Battery life is also underwhelming, only lasting a paltry four hours in our video loop test — two hours shy of Lenovo’s claim of six hours.


The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 comes in more powerful configurations, but this one is pretty decent when it comes to overall performance. It’s not the most powerful machine out there, but for $350, it’s a great value.


There are plenty of sub-categories in Asus’ VivoBook line. You’ve got the top-end Pro series, the midrange S series, and the convertible Flip series. The VivoBook 15 belongs somewhere in the middle, and we can say with utmost confidence that it’s a good blend of performance and affordability. The company claims that it offers flagship-class performance for a relatively low price. Does it deliver on that promise? Let’s find out.


The VivoBook 15’s plastic chassis is reasonably sturdy and resists bending when pressure is applied to it. It sports a clean, sleek design that looks surprisingly elegant considering the low price point. Boasting Asus’ trademark ErgoLift hinge design, the keyboard is raised by an angle of two degrees to aid typing and improve thermal ventilation. The keyboard offers a satisfying typing experience. The key action is soft and squidgy with almost no “click” to the action. The touchpad beneath it is large and responsive and supports Windows Precision Drivers for accurate tracking. In terms of connectivity, you get pretty much everything you need in an UltraBook: Two USB 2.0 ports, a USB 3.0 port, a USB-C Thunderbolt port, an HDMI port, a headphone jack, and a Micro-SD card slot.



This laptop flaunts a 15-inch Full HD LCD display with very slim bezels surrounding it. Asus normally nails it in this department, but sadly the VivoBook 15’s screen left us a bit unsatisfied. It sorely lacks brightness which is pretty evident when used outdoors, although it is bright enough for indoor use. Plus, terrible viewing angles mean colors look washed out even with a slight movement away from the central focal point.

At least it’s good performance-wise. Powered by an eighth-gen Intel Core i7-8565U processor, this laptop is very capable of usual daily computing chores, such as web surfing, document writing, spreadsheet calculations, and media playback. However, battery life is just average. Under moderate usage, this laptop can barely keep up at just five hours tops.


The Asus VivoBook 15’s performance is quite good even if you use it for processor-intensive programs. Get it at Best Buy for just $620 instead of $720 — a huge $100 worth of savings.The MacBook Air is now thinner and lighter than ever, yet still possesses the same power and solid build quality typical of Apple devices. Today, though, there are other MacBooks and laptops out there that are thinner and lighter. Even if it’s not the featherweight champion anymore, the MacBook Air still has an excellent build quality, thanks to its eco-friendly aluminum chassis. This is one sleek-looking laptop, with the same clean aesthetic as the rest of its MacBook kin. The latest version of the MacBook Air normally retails for $1,100, but right now you can purchase it at Best Buy for $900 — a huge $200 off.


The MacBook Air looks almost exactly like the previous one, with a few significant hardware and software upgrades. The older version is outfitted with a single Thunderbolt 2 port and two USB 3 ports; the latest one has two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports instead. Although both models have a 13-inch LED-backlit screen, the newer MacBook Air’s display is made better thanks to Apple’s True Tone technology. The screen now has the power to adapt to your environment’s ambient light to make images appear more natural, with accurate colors that aren’t oversaturated. It’s not the best screen we’ve encountered on a MacBook though (that honor goes to the MacBook Pro) since it doesn’t go as bright as we hoped for, but it still looks fantastic.



Working alongside an Intel i5 processor, this MacBook Air has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal memory. It proved speedy and performed well when tasked with normal daily workflow, like streaming videos, working in Photoshop, word processing, and web browsing. We did, however, notice a bit of a slowdown when we had multiple browsers, apps, and programs open simultaneously, but not enough to raise concern.

The MacBook Air can last up to eight hours with light web browsing. While not exactly a bad number, that falls well short of Huawei’s MateBook X Pro, which managed 9.5 hours in our test.

Grundsätzlich seien aber "PC-Probleme nicht mehr das, was sie vor zehn Jahren waren", meint Kasztantowicz. So seien von allen Rechnerproblemen nur noch rund fünf Prozent hardwarebedingt, "der Rest sind meist Software- oder Anwender-Fehler", so seine Schätzung.


Liegt kein Anwenderfehler vor und führt auch die beschriebene Jedermann-Selbsthilfe nicht zum Ziel, sollte man sich an Verkäufer oder Hersteller wenden. Händler müssen defekte Geräte im Rahmen der gesetzlichen Gewährleistung in aller Regel bis zwei Jahre nach Kaufdatum reparieren oder gleichwertig austauschen. Doch wimmeln sie Kunden oftmals ab und verweisen auf die Herstellergarantie, weiß Hauke Mormann von der Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfalen. Das sollte man aber nicht mit sich machen lassen: "Wenn Ihr Gerät einen Mangel hat, können Sie vom Händler verlangen, dass er das Gerät austauscht oder vernünftig repariert", erklärt der Verbraucherschützer.


Ist die Gewährleistungszeit abgelaufen, kann man das Gerät immer noch zum Hersteller zu schicken. Denn vielleicht gewährt dieser eine längere Garantie, zeigt sich kulant und repariert auf eigene Rechnung oder macht dem Kunden zumindest ein Angebot für eine Reparatur. Auch vor dem Weggeben des Gerätes an den Händler oder vor dem Verschicken an den Händlern ist eine Datensicherung unabdingbar.



Je nachdem, wie der Defekt geartet ist, oder wenn der Rechner nicht mehr startet, muss die Festplatte dazu ausgebaut, in ein externes Gehäuse eingesetzt oder bei 2,5-Zoll-Notebook-Festplatten zumindest mit einem Adapterkabel verbunden und an einen funktionierenden Rechner angeschlossen werden.

Und was tun, wenn auch die Garantie längst abgelaufen ist und die Kostenvoranschläge von PC-Werkstätten in der Umgebung fürs eigene Portemonnaie oder gemessen am Alter des Gerätes zu hoch ausfallen? An dieser Stelle können sogenannte Repair-Cafés helfen. Bei diesen ehrenamtlich organisierten Treffen helfen Experten oder versierte Laien dabei, elektronische Geräte zu reparieren – meist unentgeltlich oder gegen einen geringen Unkostenbeitrag, etwa für Material oder Ersatzteile.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro is a thing of beauty and remains the most luxurious laptop out there. It’s sturdy as a rock and features an all-aluminum unibody that lacks any visible seams aside from those on the bottom. However, there are quite a few things that stop us from fully recommending it. Although it does boast a fantastic display and top-tier processor and hard drive performance, its frustrating lack of ports and lackluster keyboard need to be fixed. Right now, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with 7th-gen Intel Core i5 processor is available on Amazon for an $70 below its usual price. Get it for $1,230 instead of $1300.


Let’s start with the good stuff. The MacBook Pro’s Retina display is terrific. Boasting a pixel resolution of 2,560 × 1,600, the screen is not only super high definition but also ridiculously bright, colorful, and rich in contrast. With a maximum brightness of 548 lux, it doesn’t matter if you’re going to use this in the brightest room on the planet — you’re bound to see everything. Images look extremely realistic and colors are fantastic thanks to True Tone technology. Finally, the contrast ratio is excellent.


The MacBook Pro can deliver perfect blacks next to the whitest of whites without trouble.

We also don’t have any major complaints when it comes to performance. In our processor and hard drive tests, the MacBook Pro was able to give outstanding numbers that are among the best we’ve ever encountered. However, this laptop isn’t for gaming. Graphically demanding games like Civilization VI ran poorly with lots of glitches.


We blame the Intel integrated graphics chip and Apple’s OpenGL support, which hasn’t been updated significantly for years.

Even though we’re super happy to see that the MacBook Pro still has a headphone jack, Apple decided that USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 is the future and has ditched every other port. Yes, USB-C is all you get, two on each side for a total of four. Although the simplicity of the port selection does have some benefits (every port is a charging port, so you can plug the wall adapter into whichever is more convenient), you’re going to need lots of adapters for any other peripheral you’re planning to attach.


Want to use an external display? You need an adapter. External hard drive? Adapter. Wired input of any sort? Adapter. Ethernet? Adapter. SD card? Adapter. The biggest crime of all? You can’t even plug an iPhone into it without purchasing an adapter.



The keyboard is also not very good. While it’s definitely an improvement over the older MacBook Pros thanks to improved key travel, it continues to suffer a stiff, abrupt bottoming action that can make long typing sessions tiresome.


This MacBook Pro includes the Touch Bar (units that don’t have this feature tend to be cheaper) but it’s honestly not very useful. It’s great to look at, and that’s about it. Yes, it provides a quick way to scroll through lists and can also be useful if you’d like to scroll through a video, but it is limited by its size. The miniature content previews it displays are helpful but are so small that it’s often hard to tell tabs apart, even with just three or four open. Opening even more tabs renders each of them impossible to tap. Sadly, it’s just not very integral to the MacBook experience.

Despite its flaws, its hard to discredit the 13-inch MacBook Pro’s incredible build quality, lightning-fast performance, and stunning display. Get it for $1,230 on Amazon today.


The XPS 13 is one attractive Ultrabook. Its anodized aluminum chassis comes in Alpine White, Rose Gold, or Platinum Silver (all stunning), with a faint pearlescent sheen to it. The Dell logo sits solitary yet triumphant in the center of the lid. Although it has long been derided as the “nosecam” because of its unfortunate placement at the bottom of the screen, the webcam has now migrated to its rightful place at the top center. It also happens to be the tiniest webcam we’ve ever seen, although it can still take a decent picture. What’s more, the webcam is compatible with Windows Hello so you can log in with just your face. Outlining the screen is what Dell calls the InfinityEdge bezel, and it is beautifully scant and modern. With dimensions of 11.9 x 7.8 x 0.5 inches, this 2.7-pound laptop is super portable and would be the perfect partner of mobile professionals.



This laptop’s 13-inch 4K Ultra HD InfinityEdge touch display is packed with 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and bursts with sumptuous colors, deep contrasts, and an incredible amount of detail. It also gets astonishingly bright, averaging 375 nits. Just like the display, the side-firing speakers are excellent. They can easily fill a medium-sized room with clear and rich sound, although the bass lacks punch, a clear compromise resulting from its slimness.

Another fine feature of the XPS 13 is its backlit keyboard. It remains one of its greatest strengths, with a firm and tactile bottoming action. Finicky typists should be warned that the layout is still on the small side but with a typing experience this comfortable, who cares? Keeping up is the wonderfully responsive touchpad that boasts full Windows Precision Touchpad support.

The same is true of Advanced Optimus. Nvidia’s Optimus lets a laptop turn off its discrete GPU to save battery life, transforming light-duty work to integrated graphics. However, the Optimus controller must be able to put the integrated graphics in full control, allowing tasks to be handed off to the discrete graphics when necessary.


As a result, Nvidia’s G-Sync, which synchronizes frame output and display refresh rate, wasn’t compatible with Optimus. That’s a big problem. Without Optimus, many gaming laptops turn in terrible battery life figures compared to similar laptops that don’t include a discrete Nvidia GPU.

Fortunately, Advanced Optimus is a way around that. Nvidia has developed a Dynamic Display Switch which can easily toggle between the Beyond just G-Sync support, Advanced Optimus also supports advanced screen technology, such as 4K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.

Unlike Dynamic Boost, Nvidia says implementing Advanced Optimus takes a bit more work. It’ll be a less frequent feature, but we already have the first example: The Lenovo Legion 7i.


The next generation of Max-Q includes a couple more small tweaks to advance the technology. It a new low-voltage GDDR6 memory to shave off a watt or two from the RAM. Nvidia says it worked closely with memory vendors to optimize memory subsystems.

Max-Q also has what it calls “Next Gen Regulator Efficiency.” Nvidia says around 15% of power is lost at the voltage regulator, which works out to around 12 watts in a Max-Q laptop. By making this regular more efficient, Nvidia says it can save more power and give that straight to the GPU core.


However, Nvidia has decided not to brand the next generation of Max-Q differently. That means the average buyer likely won’t know the difference between a Max-Q 2.0 laptop and an older Max-Q machine. The added confusion of Advanced Optimus and Dynamic Boost being “add-on” features certainly doesn’t help. Gamers might have trouble figuring out if a laptop has the features they want.


Nvidia says it hopes to continue to improve Max-Q over the years, rather than rebrand it. There’s no question Nvidia laptops are getting both thinner and more powerful. But with RTX/GTX, Ti, Super, and Max-Q all floating in the ether, it stands to make buying a gaming laptop more confusing than ever.

Thin bezels and small footprints have always been a part of the XPS DNA, but when you apply them to a laptop with a 17-inch screen, it’s even more noticeable. Despite its larger screen, the XPS 17 is only a hair bigger than the MacBook Pro. The footprint of each is almost identical, with the only noticeable difference being an extra 0.65 inches in width for the Dell. That’s the strength of the XPS 17’s thin bezel design.


The XPS 17 matches other important design changes made to recent XPS 15 and 13 models: A 16:10 display aspect ratio, a large touchpad, upward-facing speakers, and four Thunderbolt 3 ports. These enhancements help the XPS 17 match or exceed the MacBook Pro 16 in multiple areas. Dell doesn’t want to give away any advantage to Apple.


The lead designer on the XPS team, Nick DiLoreto, described why a laptop exactly like this was what he’s always wanted. “There’s a whole group of creative people like myself who are always looking for the biggest screen,” he told me. “When I’m in Taiwan or whatever, I don’t have access to my 38-inch monitor, but I still have to do the same types of tasks. To have that screen is really helpful for people like me.”


The XPS team seems confident about the next era of laptops. Its lineup has never been more unified, and the inclusion of a larger, more powerful XPS laptop is an exciting next step. Dell expects the XPS 17 to cut into sales of 15-inch laptops, and possibly even its own XPS 15.

“If this product is going to be successful, it’s gonna eat a bunch of 15-inch products,” said Oliphant. “Competitors, and maybe even some of ours. But we think this is gonna be groundbreaking.”



That doesn’t mean Dell is ready to forgo a 15-inch laptop, as Apple did. Dell has no plans to slow down or ax current models. Oliphant says the future holds more iterations and updates, not less.

“We won’t let our product line get as long in the tooth as this one,” he said, pointing to the previous version of the XPS 15. “You’re going to see us refresh these products a little more frequently. We’re not going to go crazy and do something new every year, but we’ve proved to ourselves that five years on this chassis was probably one to two years too long.”


He also pointed toward a big shift in technology that could happen in the future. He referenced everything from the architectural revolution of big core/small core chip design to ultrathin mechanical keyboards.

“I’ve fell many more times than I’ve succeeded,” Oliphant told me. “Go back to the Adamo days. Neither of those products were successful. But if we hadn’t done those products, we wouldn’t be where we are today with these products. Everybody’s gonna make mistakes. The smart ones learn from them.”

The XPS 17’s most impressive performance advantage almost didn’t make it to the final product.

Limited thermal headroom is a problem for laptops in this class. They’re forced to walk a tightrope between heat, noise, performance, and size. The worst example is the 2018 MacBook Pro 15, which infamously throttled the Core i9 so hard it sometimes fell short against the Core i7 model. It was, in a word, a disaster.


According to Oliphant, that’s why the RTX 2060 wasn’t always in the XPS 17’s plans. Simply bringing the thermal solution in the XPS 15 to a larger chassis wouldn’t leave enough headroom for Nvidia’s beefy, 60-watt graphics card. Then, halfway through the development cycle, the team’s engineers hit a breakthrough.


“About six months ago, when we were in the middle of this development cycle, our TDP (thermal design power) for this product was about 70 or 75 watts. Our engineering guys, the thermal and mechanical engineers and architects, developed and incubated a new thermal technique which basically took this product from the mid-70s up to the 90s. We had to change the fans and enclosures a little bit, but no other structural changes to the product. Just through some incubation and innovation on the thermal side, we’re able to give you an extra 30% of TDP.”


This was a breakthrough. Without it, the Dell XPS 17 wouldn’t be “ready for VR,” it wouldn’t have the RTX 2060, and its gains over the XPS 15 would far less impressive. The XPS 17 was well on its way to being another 17-inch laptop serving up a larger display — and not much else.

Dell didn’t offer a specific figure for the boost the new thermal system brings, but more power means the system is able to run higher clock cycles and more efficiently push heat off the system.


The new thermals include a vapor chamber that covers the graphics card and acts as a large heat sink to absorb that hot air. Many gaming laptops use this type of cooling over traditional heat pipes, however. The real breakthrough can be found in the fans.



The impeller is now much larger, filling 90% of the housing with whirling fan blades. Combined with some careful airflow tricks within the chassis of the laptop, this thermal solution can move far more air and exhaust more heat. It sounds simple, but creating a practical, durable fan design capable of such airflow took months of work, and Dell thinks it’ll prove to be a game-changer.


“There’s a ton of different forces pulling us in different directions when we talk about thermal capabilities for these products. I could add some big-ass feet on this thing and drive the thermals up even further. But we want table height when we’re sitting on the table next to our competitors. These aren’t gaming boxes. They’re performance boxes, but they’re premium performance boxes. It’s a delicate balance on what we do to make these things beautiful, but then also make them effective in what their jobs are supposed to be.”


The XPS 17 might not have a clear rival from its Windows competitors, but it does have a clear target. The MacBook Pro 16. It’s a laptop that won much favor for Apple, especially from creative professionals. The XPS 17 has its work cut out for it if Dell hopes to win this “creator” demographic.

“When you look at all the focus on creators right now, a lot of it is marketing,” said Oliphant. “It’s not like there’s been some magical university of creation that has just started people who want to create things. There have always been creators out there. But people have started to market to those people very effectively.”


This is, of course, something Apple has been doing for decades. Apple has always sold itself as the brand for creatives — whether for hobbyists or professionals. The 16-inch MacBook Pro epitomizes this approach as a large and powerful laptop meant for this exact demographic. The 17-inch MacBook Pro was canceled long ago, but the 16-inch feels like its spiritual successor.



The shadow of Apple’s laptop hung over all our conversations at XPS labs. A MacBook sat on the table as we talked about the potential of the XPS 17.

“We didn’t know the MacBook Pro was coming as a 16-inch,” Oliphant told me. “It just happened to perfectly fit right in between our products. Now, we have a sandwich strategy where if you want something lighter and as powerful, you buy this product. If you want something significantly more powerful and probably about the same size, you get the 17.”

In der Vision von Engelbart sollten Symbole auf dem Bildschirm erscheinen, die man mit einem Zeiger ansteuern und aktivieren kann. 1962 veröffentlichte der ehemalige Navy-Radartechniker am Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in Menlo Park ein wissenschaftliches Papier unter dem Titel "Augmenting the Human Intellect: A conceptual framework" (Erweiterung des menschlichen Intellekts: Ein Grundkonzept).


Zwei Jahre später baute Engelbart zusammen mit seinem Chefingenieur Bill English den ersten Maus-Prototypen. Diese Originalmaus, die in einem Holzgehäuse untergebracht war, enthielt ein Rad, das die Bewegung des Gerätes in Cursorbewegungen auf dem Bildschirm umsetzte. Ein Mitarbeiter in Engelbarts Labor meinte, das Holzkästchen sehe mit der roten Taste oben und dem Kabel hinten wie eine Maus. Der Name blieb hängen.


Es dauerte dann bis zum 9. Dezember 1968, bis Engelbart das Konzept der Öffentlichkeit vorstellte. Die 90-minütige Live-Präsentation auf der "Fall Joint Conference", die in einem Video für die Nachwelt erhalten geblieben ist, ging als "Mutter aller Demos" in die Geschichte ein.

Engelbart führte damals den Einsatz einer Maus vor, die auf einem Bildschirm einen schwarzen Punkt bewegte. "In unserer Vision gingen wir davon aus, dass die Menschen zur Lösung von Problemen computergestützte Arbeitsstationen einsetzen werden", sagte Engelbart 30 Jahre später in einem Interview. "Diese Stationen setzten voraus, dass man mit Hilfe eines Geräts einen Cursor und damit die Informationen auf dem Bildschirm ansteuern konnte." Er habe damals im Auftrag der Weltraumorganisation Nasa verschiedene Geräte ausprobiert, darunter einen Lichtgriffel und auch Joysticks. "Es stellte sich schnell heraus, dass die Maus besser als alle anderen Geräte funktionierte."


Um solche Software loszuwerden, hilft ein Blick in die Systemeinstellungen. Unter "Programme hinzufügen oder entfernen" lässt sich unerwünschte Software aufspüren und entfernen. Wer es nicht selbst erledigen will, kann Programme wie den kostenlosen Bulk Crap Uninstaller nutzen. Die Werbekacheln im Startmenü von Windows 10 entfernen Anwender am besten per Rechtsklick und dann über "Von Start lösen" oder "Deinstallieren".


Aber nicht nur auf neuen Computern können ungeahnte Software-Dreingaben warten. Auch viele häufig benutzte Freeware-Programme kommen mittlerweile mit Werbesoftware, wenn man bei der Installation nicht genau aufpasst. Für die eigentlichen Funktionen sind die Dreingaben nicht nötig. Etwa beim nach wie vor verbreiteten Flash-Player, der bei der Installation gleich eine Virenschutz-Toolbar installieren möchte. Oder das Anzeigeprogramm für PDF-Dateien Foxit-Reader. Hier heißt es: aufmerksam sein. Bei der Installation lässt sich solche Zusatzsoftware häufig durch das Entfernen eines gesetzten Häkchens abwählen.


Wer einfach Apps entfernen will, sollte sich die App "10AppsManager", wie "Chip" (9/2018) berichtet. Die Freeware zeigt eine Übersicht aller Apps an und ermöglicht die Deinstallation mit wenigen Klicks.



Die Anwendung von "10AppsManager" lohnt auch nach größeren Windows-Updates, bei denen auch mal ungefragt neue Programme installiert werden können. Nach Updates sollten Nutzer auch die Speicherbereinigungsoptionen von Windows aufrufen, zu finden unter Start/Einstellungen/System/Speicher. Hier auf "Jetzt Speicherplatz freigeben" klicken und dann noch auswählen, was in den digitalen Müll darf. Wer hier auch ältere Windows-Installationen entfernt, kann richtig viel Festplattenplatz zurückgewinnen.


Microsoft plant offenbar, seinen Internet-Browser Edge zu ersetzen. Derzeit soll der Konzern an einem neuen Browser für Windows 10 arbeiten. Der Projektname lautet: "Anaheim". Das berichtet die Seite "Windows Central" mit Berufung auf Insider-Quellen.


Über den neuen Windows-10-Browser sind noch keine Einzelheiten bekannt. Microsoft hat sich zu den Gerüchten nicht geäußert. Laut "Windows Central" soll der neue Browser auf Chromium basieren. Dabei handelt es sich um einen Teil von Googles Browser Chrome. Der Konzern hat einen großen Teil des Codes als Open-Source-Projekt veröffentlicht. Das heißt, dass jeder Nutzer darauf zugreifen darf.



Microsoft veröffentlichte Edge 2015 zusammen mit Windows 10. Das Programm sollte den Internet Explorer ersetzen. Die sogenannte Browser-Engine wurde dabei von Microsoft neu entwickelt und heißt "EdgeHTML". Mit einer Browser-Engine lassen sich Inhalte auf Webseiten darstellen.
