But frankly, the same is true for premium laptops — you can spend over $2,000 and get a laptop that won’t meet your needs if you don’t carefully identify what’s important to you.


In the world of cars, the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla have been two of the best-selling cars for some time now, and there’s a good reason. They’re affordable, safe, provide decent performance, and won’t break the bank when it comes to maintaining them. If you’re looking for basic transportation, then you can’t go wrong with either of these options. The same goes for budget laptops: you aren’t getting a Ferrari, but if what you need is good performance and reliability at an affordable price, then our list proves that you can get quite a bit of computer for well under $1,000.

But if you just need to browse the web, run simple productivity apps, and can get away with Android equivalents, then Chrome OS could work.

We’ve reviewed hundreds of laptops, so we know what to look for in a laptop regardless of the price. The best budget laptop you can buy is the Asus ZenBook 13 UX333. It does everything that laptops hundreds of dollars more expensive can do — and in some cases, it does it even better.


But if your budget is a bit lower, or if you want to be able to game on your laptop, we’ve included options for you below as well. You can also check out some of the best laptop deals as well if you’re looking for savings.


You might not expect quality from a laptop that costs less than a new flagship iPhone, but this ZenBook is a pleasant surprise. The newest ZenBook 13 enjoys the same all-metal unibody chassis, and now it is barely more than half an inch thick and has shed half a pound to weigh in at two and a half pounds. The latest version packs in the same surprising amount of horsepower into its small and inexpensive package. Featuring an 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, the ZenBook doesn’t have the latest hardware available, but its a reasonable compromise given the price and quality of this laptop.


Better still, the laptop is a real pleasure to use. It has an excellent keyboard — one of the best on a 13-inch laptop at this price. It also offers a spacious touchpad and a 1080p non-touch display with extremely thin bezels. The display has been improved to offer extraordinary contrast no matter the price, along with an impressive increase in its color gamut. This isn’t a 2-in-1, so you won’t be swinging the ZenBook 13 UX333’s display around for use as a tablet, but its focus on conventional use helps Asus offer this system at a budget price. The incredible battery life is the cherry on top.


Whether you’re typing up another spreadsheet or winding down with a game at the end of a long workday, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 strikes a great balance. It features powerful and efficient general computing power, like a ninth-generation Intel CPU — options include Core i5, Core i7, and Core i9 chips — and up to 16GB of RAM, and this laptop sports a dedicated graphics chip. The standard model comes with an Nvidia GTX 1050 3GB for entry-level gaming chops, but there’s also an option for a new-gen 1650, which can play all sorts of games if you tweak the settings enough.


With the typical Inspiron build quality, we’d expect this system to borrow a number of great design features from the more premium XPS range, but make them available in a more affordable form. It’s not the lightest laptop at just over four pounds, but it has a great, spill-resistant keyboard, full Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth connectivity, and a top-mounted 720p webcam for conferencing.



The Surface Go 2 may be limited by its small size and, at the entry level, by a low-powered Intel Pentium processor — which can be upgraded to an Intel Core m3 for $130 more — but it offers something never before seen in the Windows world: A truly budget-minded 2-in-1. Its build is every bit as solid as its bigger brother, the Surface Pro 7, and it boasts a beautiful, bright display to boot. The best part? It’s actually thin and light enough to be held in one hand like a proper tablet.


While performance doesn’t feel as smooth as on something like an iPad or even a Chromebook, those devices can’t do quite as many things as the Surface Go 2, which runs a full version of Windows 10. On the battery front, however, it’s a bit lacking. That’s its most unfortunate compromise since this is a device made for portability. Also, we still wish the excellent Type Cover keyboard and Surface Pen came bundled in.


But even with its fair share of faults, it’s absolutely the best budget 2-in-1 you can buy. Competitors in this price range lack its high build quality and often have a less impressive display or keyboard.

Die Standard-Windows-Hintergründe treffen nicht jeden Geschmack. Ein persönliches Hintergrundbild lässt sich so einstellen: Rechtsklick auf eine freie Fläche des Desktops und im Menü "Anpassen" anklicken. Im nächsten Fenster lässt sich ein Hintergrund auswählen. Nun einfach im rechten Auswahlmenü "Bild" auswählen und auf den grauen Button "Durchsuchen" klicken und das passende Bild von Festplatte, Stick oder aus der Cloud auswählen.


Wer seinen PC intensiv nutzt, hat nicht selten mehrere Programme gleichzeitig geöffnet. Übersicht darüber bietet Windows 10 mit der Funktion Snap Assist. Diese lässt den Benutzer die Fenster gleichmäßig auf den Bildschirm verteilen. Dafür im Fenster auf den oberen Rand, auch Titelleiste genannt, klicken und bei gedrückter Maustaste das Fenster an den linken oder rechten Rand des Desktops ziehen. Nach dem Loslassen zeigt Windows 10 automatisch verfügbare, geöffnete Programme an, die dann auf der anderen, freien Bildschirmseite platziert werden können. Die gleiche Funktion gibt es auch mit der Tastenkombination Windowstaste + Pfeiltaste.


Das große Windows-10-Startmenü macht nicht jedem Benutzer Freude. Wem die Gewöhnung schwerfällt oder gar dem klassischen Startmenü nachtrauert, kann mit einem Programm nachhelfen: "Die Freeware Classic Shell versucht das Windows-XP-Startmenü nachzuahmen", sagt Jan Sebastian Schüßler, Experte für Betriebssysteme beim "c't"-Magazin. Unter classicshell.net ist die Startmenü-Freeware erhältlich.


Etwas Zeit zur Durchsicht der vielen Einstellungs- und Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten sollten Benutzer aber mitbringen. "Dann kommt man schon so sehr nah an die Optik des guten alten Windows-Startmenüs heran", so Schüßler.

Der PC, lange totgesagt, ist wieder im Trend. Erstmals seit sechs Jahren steigt der Absatz. Ob das so bleibt, ist fraglich. Denn viele Nutzer bevorzugen ein anderes Gerät.


Der weltweite Absatz von Personal Computern hat im zweiten Quartal seit 2012 wieder zugelegt. Das belegen vorläufige Zahlend er Marktforschungsfirma Gartner. Insgesamt seien 62,1 Millionen Geräte verkauft worden, ein Zuwachs von 1,4 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahres-Quartal.

Vor allem die Nachfrage von Firmen habe das Wachstum bedingt und die rückläufigen Geschäfte mit privaten Nutzern ausgeglichen, sagte Gartner-Analystin Mikako Kitagawa. Von einer echten Erholung könne aber noch nicht gesprochen werden.



Weiterhin machten den Herstellern die veränderten Nutzungsgewohnheiten von privaten Kunden zu schaffen. Denn die erledigen viele Dinge inzwischen lieber mit dem Smartphone statt mit dem PC, so Kitagawa. Im Geschäftskunden-Bereich werde sich die Nachfrage in zwei Jahren abschwächen, wenn die Unternehmen bei ihrem Umstieg auf Windows 10 ihre Hardware weitgehend ersetzt hätten.

Weltweit führt Lenovo den Markt mit einem Anteil von 21,9 Prozent an und überholte nach der Übernahme von Fujitsu den Konkurrenten HP (ebenfalls 21,9 Prozent Marktanteil) mit einem schmalen Vorsprung von rund 12.000 verkauften PCs. Auf Platz drei rangiert Dell (16,8 Prozent Marktanteil), gefolgt von Apple (7,1 Prozent) und Acer (6,4 Prozent Marktanteil).

So kommen Sie in die Ressourcen- und Leistungsüberwachung, wo Sie circa eine Minute lang auf die Systemdiagnose warten müssen. Ist diese da, sollten Sie unter den zahlreichen Auswertungen vor allem die mit einem Kreuz markierten "Fehler" ins Auge fassen, aber auch die "Informationen" enthalten interessante Tipps, wie Sie Ihr System stabiler machen können.


Hinweis: Sie müssen mindestens Administratorenrechte haben, um den Schnell-Check zu öffnen. Sollte er sich also aufhängen, hilft es, eine Eingabeaufforderung mit Administratorrechten zu starten. Dies geschieht erneut über das Kürzel "Windows-Taste" + "R" und dann mit dem Befehl "net user administrator /active:yes".


Wer einen neuen Rechner kauft, findet darauf in der Regel ein vorinstalliertes Windows 10. Das jüngste Microsoft-Betriebssystem will auch Einsteigern die Nutzung einfach machen. Noch leichter fällt die Umstellung mit einigen Tipps und Tricks – und auch der Datenschutz lässt sich verbessern. Hier finden Sie eine Auswahl an praktischen Handreichungen.


"Windows 10 sammelt von Haus aus sehr viele Daten", sagt Hauke Mormann von der Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfahlen. "Als Anwender sollte man sich daher mit den Datenschutzeinstellungen in Ruhe auseinandersetzen." Diese ändert man so: Drücken Sie gleichzeitige die "Windows-Taste" und "I", um die Einstellungen zu öffnen. Nun geht es mit einem Klick auf Datenschutz weiter. Auf der linken Seite befinden sich Namen der jeweiligen Apps und deren Funktionen. Wenn man beispielsweise die Messaging-Apps nicht nutzt, sollte man hier den blauen Schieberegler auf "Aus" stellen.


Allerdings: Auch bei maximalen Datenschutzeinstellungen und deaktiviertem Cortana-Sprachassistenten funkt Windows immer noch nach Hause. "Dienste, die Sie nicht brauchen oder deren Aktionen Sie nicht verstehen, sollten deaktiviert werden", so Datenschützer Mormann. Zusätzlichen Schutz kann hier das Anti-Spionage-Programm Spybot Anti-Beacon verschaffen.



Wer einmal mit den Shortcuts genannten Tastenkürzeln gearbeitet hat, möchte diese nicht mehr missen. Zu den wichtigsten, informativsten Funktionen unter Windows 10 gehört das Info-Center. Es zeigt, versteckt am rechten Bildschirmrand, System- und Softwarebenachrichtigungen, E-Mails, Aufgaben und andere Infos. Die Tastenkombi Windows-Taste + A öffnet das Info-Center.


Windows-Taste + I öffnet die Windows-Einstellungen. Mit Windows-Taste + L kann man den Benutzer wechseln oder den PC sperren, Windows-Taste + S öffnet das Sucheingabefeld. Windows-Taste + Strg + D erstellt einen neuen virtuellen Desktop, den man mit Windows-Taste + Strg + linke/rechte Pfeiltaste wechseln und mit Windows-Taste + Strg + F4 schließen kann. Alt-Taste + Tab wechselt zwischen verschiedenen Apps (Halten – öffnen, Loslassen – wechseln).

Zu den wichtigsten Tools unter Windows 10 gehört der Task-Manager. Er erlaubt einen Blick hinter die Kulissen und zeigt, welche Programme aktuell laufen. Gestartet wird er mit der Tastenkombi Strg + Shift + Esc oder einem Rechtsklick auf die Taskleiste (meist unterer Bildschirmrand) und Folgeklick auf Task-Manager.



Hängt zum Beispiel eine Anwendung, lässt diese sich mit einem Rechtsklick auf den Namen des Prozesses und dem Befehl "Prozess beenden" abschalten. Ein Neustart des Programms lässt es in der Regel wieder normal laufen.

Dafür ließ sich das Yoga im Test in knapp eineinhalb Stunden wieder aufladen. Der Sound des Yoga klingt dank der Soundbar sowohl bei Spielen als auch Filmen gut. Mit einer vorinstallierten Software können Nutzer auch verschiedene Soundprofile einstellen. Mit den eingebauten Mikrofonen soll sich laut Lenovo Sprachassistent Cortana auf eine Entfernung von bis zu vier Meter bedienen lassen. Im Test hörte Cortana sogar bei einer Entfernung von acht Metern mit. Auch wenn sie vom Raum nebenan angesprochen wurde, führte sie den Befehl aus.


Was Datenschützer und paranoide Menschen freuen dürfte: Lenovo spendiert dem Yoga C930 eine eingebaute Abdeckung für die Kamera. Diese lässt sich mit einem Schalter aktivieren. In feinstem Marketing-Sprech bezeichnet der Hersteller das als "komfortable TrueBlock Kameraabdeckung". Lenovo ist so stolz auf dieses Feature, dass es dem System auf seiner Webseite zwei Absätze widmet. In Wirklichkeit funktioniert das Ganze wie ein handelsüblicher Kamerablocker mit Schiebemechanismus für zehn Euro.


Trotz aller Technik hat das Yoga C930 auch einige Macken. So spiegelt der Bildschirm stark – selbst auf der höchsten Helligkeitsstufe. Außerdem bleiben wie bei allen Touchdisplays viele Fingerabdrücke hängen. Wer zudem sein Gerät per HDMI anschließen will, muss sich einen Adapter kaufen: Ein HDMI-Eingang fehlt am 1.500-Euro-Notebook. Auch einen SD-Karten-Steckplatz sucht man vergebens. Blöd für Menschen, die gerne automatische Back-ups auf SD-Karten machen lassen. Tatsächlich geizte Lenovo mit Steckplätzen: Nur einen USB 3.1, zwei Thunderbolt USB-C und einen Audio-Anschluss bietet das Yoga.


Im umgeklappten Modus wird es schwierig, die Lautstärke einzustellen. Denn echte Lautstärkeknöpfe am Gerät fehlen. Das ist besonders ärgerlich, wenn man das Gerät umgeklappt hat, um beispielsweise einen Film zu schauen. Entweder Sie ändern die Lautstärkeeinstellungen jedes Mal manuell in Windows oder klappen das Gerät zurück, um die Tastatur nutzen zu können. Theoretisch lässt sich der Stift des Yoga so programmieren, dass es die Lautstärke ändern kann. Im Test ignorierte das Gerät aber bockig alle Befehle.


Das Yoga C930 ist technisch ein tolles Gerät. Für den Preis wäre alles andere aber auch eine Kunden-Beleidigung. Das Ultrabook liefert dank der Soundbar einen tollen Klang, Programme laufen flott, der Touchscreen garantiert eine leichte Bedienung. Und was für ein Notebook besonders wichtig ist: Der Akku hält lange und lädt schnell. Allerdings kostet der Spaß auch mindestens 1.499 Euro. Da stellt sich die Frage: Für wen ist das teure Gerät gedacht?



Die Soundbar ist zwar schön und gut, aber unterwegs lässt sie sich nicht nutzen – außer man möchte Mitreisende im Zug nerven. Und wer Zuhause ein Soundsystem hat, wird das Yoga vermutlich sowieso da anschließen. Gamer sollten lieber einen Laptop mit dedizierter Grafikkarte kaufen. Grafikdesigner werden sicherlich an dem handlichen Stift, dem großen Bildschirm mit klaren Farben sowie der langen Akkulaufzeit Freude haben – aber Lenovos Yoga Book eignet sich für solche Arbeiten vermutlich eher.


Wer jedoch nicht zeichnen kann oder will, aber unbedingt ein Convertible möchte, findet günstigere Alternativen. Die mögen zwar technisch nicht so stark sein – aber wer unterwegs Filme schauen, im Internet surfen oder Textdokumente bearbeiten will, braucht kein Yoga C930.Microsoft hat den Fehler im gestoppten Update offenbar gefunden. Dabei war er schon im Juni 2018 von Testern bemerkt worden. Ein neues Update soll in Kürze zur Verfügung stehen.


Microsoft hätte die Update-Panne bei Windows 10 offenbar verhindern können. Test-Nutzer im "Insider Programm" hatten frühzeitig auf das Verschwinden von eigenen Dateien aufmerksam gemacht und im Juni 2018 Alarm geschlagen. Der Konzern hatte die Hinweise aber anscheinend übersehen.


Erst nachdem der Fehler nach dem Start der offiziellen Auslieferung an alle Nutzer wieder auftrat, reagierte der Konzern und stoppte das Update vorübergehend. Microsoft will nun laut einem Bericht von "golem.de" das Windows-Insider-Programm so umbauen, dass Fehler nicht nochmals übersehen werden können.



Ein hundertstel Prozent der Nutzer sind betroffen

Laut Microsoft sollen nur sehr wenige Nutzer von dem Fehler betroffen sein. Dieser trat etwa bei einem Hundertstel Prozent aller installierten Windows 10-Geräte auf. Immerhin genug, um das Update für alle zu stoppen. Die betroffenen Nutzer hatten offenbar den Speicherort für die eigenen Dateien verändert. Das geht zum Beispiel mit dem Tool "Known Folder Redirection".

Belkin’s mini version of a laptop dock is designed to be portable. Instead of leaving it on your desk, you can easily store it in a laptop bag or pack. However, despite its size, the dock can still handle dual 4K, 60fps displays via HDMI, plus a USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 port. There’s also a Gigabit Ethernet port for wired connections. However, unlike most of our docking stations, there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack here, so you’ll have to find your headphone connection elsewhere.


Not everyone has a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 device to work with, which means that many of our picks aren’t exactly right for them. This AmazonBasics model is a very affordable alternative that focuses on USB 3.0 connections, with the ability to connect up to two monitors with HDMI and DVI-I ports — a DVI-to-VGA adapter is included for supporting older connections. There are nine peripheral ports in total, including two USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, and an RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet port. DisplayLink drivers must be installed prior to first use, so pay attention to instructions on this one.


There are many different types of batteries available, but we’re going to focus on the ones that fit the widest variety of passenger vehicles. Some of the best car batteries also work well in commercial applications, so it’s important to know the difference. We’re also going to talk mostly about absorbed glass-mat (AGM) batteries, which are different than the flooded batteries we think of when talking about car parts. In AGM batteries, the electrolyte solution is absorbed into fiberglass matting. Exide’s Edge batteries benefit from secure, non-spillable AGM construction. They’re ideal for vehicles that are frequently in stop-and-go traffic. The model we’ve selected provides 710 cold-cranking amps, so it won’t let you down when the temperature dips. It’s one of Exide’s most affordable AGM models, but it’s more expensive than many other batteries.


Bosch makes more than just tools and dishwashers, and its AGM line of car batteries is among the best. This one features 710 cold-cranking amps, it weighs 47 pounds, and it should outlast conventional car batteries by up to two times. The company’s roadside assistance program is available to buyers, too. To sweeten the deal, Bosch will replace the battery free of charge if it fails within four years of purchase.

"Seien Sie nicht immer als Admin angemeldet, für die normale PC-Nutzung reicht ein eingeschränktes Benutzerkonto aus", sagt Viktor Schröder, Leiter IT-Services von der Gesellschaft für Informatik. Windows 10-Nutzer können unter "Einstellungen/Konten" einen lokalen, eingeschränkten Benutzer erstellen, dieser sollte dann bei der Windows-Anmeldung verwendet werden. "So verringert man das Risiko, dass unerwünschte Software installiert oder gestartet werden kann", sagt Schröder.


Eine gute Antiviren-Software sollte für alle Anwender Pflicht sein. Der in Windows 10 enthaltene Defender bietet einen guten Grundschutz. "Wer ganz sichergehen möchte, sollte über eine umfassende Sicherheitssuite nachdenken", sagt Schröder. Dabei sollte man es aber nicht zu gut meinen. "Man sollte darauf achten, dass nicht mehrere Antivirenprogramme installiert sind." Im schlimmsten Fall könne der PC sonst sogar den Dienst vollständig quittieren.


Viele Attacken aus dem Internet geschehen im Hintergrund, ohne dass die Nutzer aktiv im Internet sind. Einen Teil dieser versteckten, unberechtigten Systemzugriffe kann eine Firewall blockieren. Windows 10 liefert diese schon unter "Defender Security Center/Firewall & Netzwerkschutz" mit. Sie erlaubt nur bestimmte ausgehende und ankommende Verbindungen und schützt so den Rechner.



4. Windows auf dem neuesten Stand halten

Ein großer Schwachpunkt bei der PC-Sicherheit sind Sicherheitslücken in Windows oder anderer Anwendungssoftware. Schädlinge und Hacker nutzen die Eintrittspunkte gezielt für Angriffe. "Privatanwender sollten darauf achten, Windows und andere Software auf dem aktuellen Stand zu halten", sagt Matthias Gärtner vom Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI). Zu den wichtigsten Updates gehören neben Windows auch Browser-Erweiterungen, Java, der PDF-Reader Adobe Acrobat und natürlich die Antiviren-Software.


Schon nach dem Hochfahren des PC lauert das erste Sicherheitsrisiko: das Passwort. Wer den Rechner mit anderen Nutzern teilt, sollte in den Einstellungen unter "Konten & Anmeldeoptionen" eine sichere PIN oder ein Passwort vergeben. "Je länger das Passwort, desto besser", sagt Hauke Mormann von der Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfalen. Er empfiehlt Groß- und Kleinbuchstaben, Zahlen und Sonderzeichen zu mischen und mehr als acht Zeichen zu verwenden. "Wir würden uns auch wünschen, dass Dienstanbieter im Internet die Zeichenbegrenzung für Passwörter generell abschaffen", sagt Mormann. Ein Tipp für verschiedene Seiten: "Legen Sie ein sechsstelliges Grundpasswort fest, für jede Plattform denken Sie sich dann beispielsweise sechs Zeichen dazu."



Die meisten WLAN-Router haben einen Standard-Netzwerkschlüssel. Dieser reicht aber oft nicht aus. "Wechseln Sie den Schlüssel regelmäßig, am besten alle drei Monate", empfiehlt Schröder. Auch sollte der Zugriff auf die Router-Einstellungen mit einem sicheren Passwort geschützt werden. "Auf die Router-eigene Firewall können sich Privatanwender grundsätzlich erst mal verlassen", sagt Gärtner. Jedoch sollten Nutzer darauf achten, "dass sie sich keine Software installieren, die den Firewallschutz wieder aufweicht". Besonders das Internet der Dinge, zum Beispiel Überwachungskameras, Babyphones oder der WLAN-fähige Kühlschrank, schaffen neue Sicherheitsrisiken.

On average, a new battery lasts about five years in ideal conditions, though your mileage may vary. By ideal conditions, we mean that the car’s electrical system is in tip-top shape, that the battery regularly goes through full charging cycles, and that it’s not subjected to extreme temperatures on a regular basis.


To elaborate, your car’s electrical system consists of many parts like the alternator, the voltage regulator, plus a real latticework of wires and grounds. An issue with any of the above could shorten your battery’s life expectancy if it’s ignored. Preventive maintenance goes a long way. Keep an eye out for early warning signs, like headlights that dim when you turn on the heater, or instrument panel lights that are markedly dimmer than the day you bought the car.


As for full charging cycles, keep in mind your car’s 12-volt battery dispenses a significant amount of electricity to zap the starter motor into motion every time you start the engine. If your commute is half a mile long, the alternator might not have time to recharge the battery before you reach your destination and turn off the engine. We’re not saying you should live further from work, but if you only drive short distances, take your car on a 20- to 30-minute trip every now and then to ensure the battery gets the full charge it needs.


The effect that freezing-cold temperatures have on a car battery are relatively well known. An engine requires more energy to start when the thermometer dips into the 20s, or below, partly because the oil gets thicker. At the same time, the cold makes the battery less effective. It’s weaker, yet it needs to work harder, and that’s not a good combination. What many motorists don’t realize is that hot weather takes an even greater toll on their car’s battery, and the cause of a dead battery in November might be the July heat. While starting is often easier in the summer, rising temperatures under the hood — where many batteries are located — cause the water in the electrolyte solution to evaporate, and cause the plates to corrode.



This is less of a worry if your battery is in the trunk, or under the rear seat, though it will still get hot. And, ultimately, there’s not a lot you can do to keep it cool. The best measures you can take are to test your battery regularly, preferably in the spring and in the fall, and to keep a set of jumper cables in the trunk, or under one of the front seats.


Don’t fret if you’re stuck with a dead battery. Whether you’re in your driveway, at work, or in the middle of a road trip, there are ways to get your car running again so that you can drive it home, or to the nearest repair shop. If your car has a manual transmission, you can start it by pushing it, putting it in second gear, and releasing the clutch once you’ve built up enough speed. Note you’ll probably need at least one helper to pull this off. Alternatively, a good set of jumper cables and a second car will channel enough electricity to your battery for it to turn the starter motor. There are also jumper packs that achieve the same result without needing the second car.


Lastly, changing a car battery is easier than it sounds. Broadly speaking, it’s a task that takes no more than 10 minutes, doesn’t require advanced knowledge, and can be completed with only a basic set of tools and simple precautions.


Tesla plans to debut low-cost electric car batteries that can last up to a million miles and could make electric Tesla models the same price or even less than a car run by gasoline.


These low-cost batteries would first appear in Tesla’s Model 3 in China later this year or early 2021. Other markets, like North America, would follow after, according to an exclusive report from Reuters.


The “million-mile” battery would use low-cobalt and cobalt-free battery chemistries since cobalt is what drives up electric vehicle battery prices. Tesla’s new battery would also use “chemical additives, materials, and coatings that will reduce internal stress and enable batteries to store more energy for longer periods,” Reuters reports.



Right now, Tesla’s Model S is the cheapest vehicle in the company’s lineup, starting at $39,990 at the very base price. If the new battery proves to be more affordable, it could drastically reduce the price, making Tesla models more widely available to more drivers. In an even broader sense, it would allow more people the ability to buy electric cars over gasoline ones.


Aside from batteries, Tesla also has its eye on expanding its business to achieve the status of a big power company, according to the new report. Tesla reportedly wants to supply electricity to both drivers and companies in the future.

It doesn’t have the smooth interface of a monitoring app, but you don’t have to download anything extra to get it.


If you look at Windows 10 power settings, you will see one of the modes is a Battery saver mode that will help your battery last longer when it’s low on power. As we mentioned, having a battery constantly bottom out to 0% levels can be unhealthy for it, so enabling the battery saver mode can help prevent this. MacOS has similar capabilities.


Adaptive brightness modes are also a good idea to enable! These adjust the brightness of your screen according to ambient light to help save on battery life when you are in a well-lit spot. Those energy savings will add up over time and lead to a longer battery life. While you’re at it, think about enabling your laptop’s dark mode as well.


Update your operating system

Finally, a note about your software — keep it updated! Companies work hard to improve the way that programs use power via software updates. The same operating system on a later patch could use significantly less battery power, giving your battery a longer lifespan without changing anything else. And so, review your OS and keep your machine — and its battery — on a healthy diet of updates.

Für Aufnahmezwecke und das Bearbeiten von Audiodaten, etwa um einen Podcast zu erstellen, steht das ausgereifte Programm Audacity bereit. "Der Schnitt und die anschließende Nachbearbeitung mit Effekten, Equalizer und Kompressoren funktioniert sehr gut", urteilt Reche. Das Plug-in Lame erlaubt zudem den Dateiexport im MP3-Format.



Platz sparen ist auch mit 7-Zip angesagt. Das Tool packt und entpackt Dateien, unterstützt dabei zahlreiche Komprimierungsformate und ist dem Windows-eigenen Zip-Tool überlegen. Und damit Nutzer ihre Dokumente platzsparend und plattformübergreifend verschicken können, ist ein virtueller PDF-Drucker wie PDF24 nützlich. That’s pretty much what the Bullet SSD is. It’s a tiny storage device that, in addition to boasting up to 2TB of storage space, is also IP67 certified — meaning it’s water resistant and dust proof. It’s also encased in metal, so it’ll survive being tossed around for years to come.


Disposable, single use paper cups aren’t all that bad for the environment — but the plastic lids that accompany them? They’re not so great. So, as part of the ongoing movement to phase out single use plastic, a startup called Unocup has developed a solution: a cleverly designed paper cup that, thanks to its unique shape, is capable of folding up to create a lid. It basically eliminates the need to top your coffee (or whatever) with a piece of plastic you’ll only use once.


This is the most low-tech entry on this week’s picks, but it’s just too clever to skip. It’s a full-year calendar with a very practical and human-centric layout. Instead of displaying each month via a series of weeks that don’t line up nicely, months are broken up into four five-day weeks, with two-day weekends between them. Additionally, the first and last days of each month are underlined, so you can easily spot when one month ends and another begins.



Artiphon broke onto the scene a couple years ago when it released the Instrument — a vaguely guitar-shaped electronic musical instrument that allowed users to play practically any sound imaginable via the familiar form of a guitar neck. It was a huge hit, and now the company is back with yet another electronic instrument dubbed Orba. This one is basically the same idea, but squeezed into a much smaller, more open-ended form factor.


You know how certain things in the grocery store are labeled as “certified organic” or “cage free” or “non-GMO”? In order to get those labels, the company has to actually get certified by an independent organization that verifies the company’s product meets certain standards. Climate Neutral certification is a new one to add to the mix — but instead of signaling that a given product or service is gluten free or non-GMO, it shows that the company behind the product has actively taken steps to offset the carbon impact of its operation. Pretty neat!


EDC tools are a dime a dozen on crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, but this one is arguably one of the best I’ve seen. Thanks to an exceptionally clever design, it’s equipped with a ratcheting screwdriver/wrench setup — which means you don’t have to spin it in a full circle to tighten a bolt or screw a screw. And of course, it’s got a handful of other features stuffed into the tiny little frame — including a pry bar and a bottle opener.



This thing is brilliant. It’s basically a wearable, battery-powered EEG monitor that tracks your brainwaves throughout the day, beams that information to your smartphone, and then uses algorithms to analyze your brain activity and predict seizures. Obviously, it’s not a mass-market device designed for everyone — it’s specifically built to help people with epilepsy. Still, it’s an idea worth supporting even if you don’t have the condition.

Well after winning the hearts of geeks around the world, the poor little guy’s creators went bankrupt in 2019 and stopped offering updates/support for him. But now, if this Kickstarter project makes its funding goal, Vector owners might soon have a way to resurrect their little robo-buddies and keep them roving around for years to come.


Robots that teach kids how to code are a dime a dozen these days. Most are just a slightly different take on the same exact idea, but Clicbot is special. Of all the coding robots we have ever seen on Kickstarter, it’s arguably one of the best. Why? Well, in addition to being outrageously simple and modular, it’s also designed to teach kids (or adults!) the fundamentals of coding and computer logic without relying exclusively on a screen. This way, they don’t have to stare dead-eyed into a tablet and can learn through a more tactile and hands-on process.


If you’ve ever installed a window AC unit, you know firsthand just how cumbersome and annoying the process is. In addition to building a suitable platform for the unit to sit on, you also have to patch the gap left in your window — which, if you’re like me, typically means hacking up a cardboard box and haphazardly duct-taping it until you’ve got a decent seal. Midea mitigates all that. It’s equipped with an integrated mounting system and a clever U-shaped design that allows you to close your window more and avoid large gaps. It sort of makes you wonder why AC units weren’t designed like this from the get-go.


Remember those reconfigurable marble track toys you had as a kid? Makeway is basically that, but with a handful of modern twists. First and foremost, all the pieces are magnetic and designed to stick on vertical surfaces like a fridge or whiteboard, meaning they don’t take up any floor space. Second, they’re totally modular, and can therefore be re-arranged to create a practically infinite number of configurations.



Tired of the images you can capture with your stock camera lenses? Check out Lomography. The NYC-based lens company has been making oddball lenses for years, and is now back on Kickstarter with its twelfth (twelfth!) project: the Perzval 80.5 Art Lens. It’s essentially an art lens that was inspired by a 180-year-old design from 19th-century photographer Joseph Perzval. It’s equipped with some unusual features that give your photos a unique bokeh effect and make the lens particularly well-suited for portrait photography.


Cast iron skillets are, in many ways, the best cooking implement ever. They provide supremely even and consistent heat, you can put them in the oven, and if you care for them properly they’ll last a lifetime. But they do have some downsides, too. In addition to being a pain to maintain, they’re also ridiculously heavy. Luckily, Solidteknics has devised an ingenious solution to this problem: use wrought iron instead of cast iron. The company’s new line of pans allegedly cook and behave exactly like traditional cast iron, but without being so heavy and unruly.


As the movement to cut down on single-use plastic continues to pick up steam, there are dozens of startups clamoring to sell you collapsible/reusable straws and eating utensils — especially on Kickstarter. However, while these products are undeniably useful, they also aren’t particularly convenient. You have to remember to bring them along wherever you go in order for them to be useful. That’s what makes Forkaknife so neat. It’s a fork and knife that are designed to pack up into a wallet-sized carrying case, so you can easily slip them inside a purse or wallet and have them with you at all times.



Electric bikes certainly aren’t a new thing at this point. Nor are electric mountain bikes. But electric fat-tire bikes? There’s not a ton of them on the market right now — but, if funded, Nireeka Prime would help change that. It’s essentially a standard-issue e-mountain bike that’s outfitted with ultra-wide tires that allow it to ride on a broader variety of terrain types — including sand and packed snow. The upshot is that while fatbikes are typically a bit tougher to pedal, the electric motor helps you overcome that and plow through any terrain you encounter.

It’s a waffle iron that, thanks to its unique design, produces waffle pieces that can be snapped apart to create Lego-like bricks, which can then be stacked together to build things. I honestly feel cheated that this didn’t exist when I was a kid.


Created using data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, Deskspace showcases the topography of the far side of the moon — in high fidelity — using concrete. It’s definitely not the most useful thing on this list, but it’s certainly a conversation starter. How many people can say they have a legit 3D relief map of the lunar surface in their house?


Kickstarter has hosted thousands of keyboard projects over the past decade, but this is definitely one of the best yet. It’s a wired mechanical keyboard that’s been stripped down to the bare essentials, but without compromising on comfort and performance. It’s so stripped down, in fact, that despite having no folding or collapsing action, it’s still small and portable enough to fit easily in a backpack.



One of my favorite Kickstarer projects of all time is the PixelStick: an electrified rail that holds 200 programmable LEDs, and allows you to take the most amazing light painting photos ever. Photonbar is essentially the same idea, but in a smaller and slightly less cumbersome form factor — and also a considerably lower price. If you’re into creative photography, you’ll definitely want to check this thing out.


Modern video games are pretty dialed-in in terms of sights and sounds, but when it comes to physical feeling, they’re still relatively boring. The best we get is really just vibrating controllers. Sensforce wants to change that with an innovative new haptic gaming chair that vibrates in three different zones. The coolest part is that it relies exclusively on audio signals to do this, so you don’t need any special drivers or plugins to make it work with your system. Just plug it in and go!



There are zillions of e-bike projects on kickstarter and indiegogo, but few are as polished as this one. It’s an e-bike that’s intentionally designed to not look like an e-bike, but still offer all the benefits of one. The Babymaker’s battery is hidden inside its normal-looking frame, and it has variable levels of pedal assist — but that’s where the modern bells and whistles stop. You won’t find any unnecessary mobile apps or annoying software updates attached to this bike, and that’s on purpose.

Der Softwarekonzern Microsoft hat vor den schottischen Orkney-Inseln ein Datenzentrum im Meer versenkt. Das Unternehmen wolle mit diesem Versuchsprojekt die Entwicklung von energieautarken Unterwasser-Datenzentren vorantreiben, teilte Microsoft UK am Mittwoch mit. Die Unternehmung nennt Microsoft "Project Natick".


Das etwa containergroße Datenzentrum auf dem Meeresgrund ist ein Prototyp. Microsoft zufolge kann der etwa zwölf Meter lange weiße Zylinder voller Computer bis zu fünf Jahre lang ohne Wartung Daten speichern und verarbeiten. Sollte allerdings in dieser Zeit etwas kaputtgehen, ist eine Reparatur nicht möglich, wie der Sender BBC erklärte. Das kalte Meerwasser vor den Inseln im Norden Schottlands kühlt das Datenzentrum, dadurch verbrauche es nur wenig Energie, so das Unternehmen.


Die benötigte Energie kommt per Unterseekabel demnach von regionalen erneuerbaren Energiequellen. Genutzt werden Gezeitenturbinen des European Marine Energy Centre, zudem Wind und Solarzellen. Der Datenverkehr erfolgt ebenfalls über dieses Kabel. Das Datenzentrum beherbergt 864 Server von Microsoft und hat eine Kapazität von 27,6 Petabyte – nach Angaben von Microsoft genug Platz, um etwa 5 Millionen Filme zu speichern.

Unerwünschte Huckepack-Programme vom Windows-Rechner fernzuhalten, ist die Aufgabe des Gratis-Tools "Unchecky", berichtet "Computerbild.de". Es entfernt bei Installationen automatisch die Häkchen in vorausgefüllten Checkboxen – und schützt den Nutzer so vor ungewollten Zusatzprogrammen, Toolbars oder Schrott-Programmen ("Crapware").


Apple hat eingeräumt, dass die Tastaturen seiner neueren Macbook-Laptops anfällig für Probleme sein können und repariert sie kostenlos. Das Reparatur-Programm folgt nach monatelangen Beschwerden von Nutzern über Tasten, die klemmen oder nicht mehr richtig funktionieren.

We were disappointed with the MacBook Pro 13’s battery life, and even the MacBook Pro 16 didn’t give as much juice as we were hoping for, despite its enormous battery. Our prayers could be answered, though, as MacOS Catalina 10.15.5 contains a new Battery Health Management feature that actively measures your charging habits and your battery temperature to prolong its lifespan. We’re hopeful this means the MacBook Pro 2020 should last longer than its predecessor.

Kleine Zeitreise gefällig? Das Uralt-Betriebssystem Windows 95 gibt es jetzt als App zum kostenlosen Download.

Dank eines Open-Source-Programms können sich Nutzer zurück in die 90er versetzen lassen und noch einmal die Nutzeroberfläche einer frühen Windows-Version erleben. Die Windows-95-Simulation kommt als 130 MB große Download-Datei für Windows, macOS oder Linux.


Entwickler Felix Rieseberg hat das Programm samt Quellcode auf GitHub veröffentlicht, wo man es sich kostenlos herunterladen kann. Nach der Installation können Nutzer zum Beispiel wie in alten Zeiten eine Runde Solitaire oder Minesweeper spielen oder mit Paint herumspielen.

Eine Microsoft-App für Windows 10 erleichtert den Datenaustausch zwischen dem PC und einem Android-Smartphone. Die "Your Phone"-App setzt aber voraus, dass der Nutzer die jüngste Windows-Version installiert hat.



Nutzer von Windows-10-Computern können jetzt leichter Daten mit ihrem Android-Smartphone austauschen. Dazu hat Microsoft seine App "Your Phone" für Windows 10 veröffentlicht. Die App ermöglicht zunächst den Austausch von Fotos, später sollen noch weitere Funktionen wie SMS-Synchronisierung, Benachrichtigungen oder Bildschirm-Übertragung hinzukommen, berichtet "The Verge".

Die "Your Phone"-App steht im Microsoft Store zum Download bereit, nach Installation lässt sich mit ihr das Smartphone mit dem PC verbinden, anschließend kann eine App auf das Smartphone geladen werden.


Damit der Datenaustausch funktioniert, brauchen Nutzer einen Windows-10-Computer mit dem aktuellen April-Update, außerdem ein Android-Smartphone mit mindestens Android 7. Die App ist kostenlos, eine iOS-Version gibt es bislang nicht.

Windows 10 bringt viel Nützliches – aber auch unerwünschte Programme, die Speicherplatz fressen. Mit einer einfachen Anwendung lässt sich der Platz auf der Festplatte zurückerobern.



Windows 10 wird bei einer Standardinstallation mit etlichen mehr oder weniger nützlichen Programmen aufgespielt. Wer seinen Festplattenspeicher lieber frei halten will, kann dafür entweder alle unerwünschten Programme von Hand deinstallieren – oder die App 10AppsManager nutzen, wie die Fachzeitschrift "Chip" berichtet. Die Freeware zeigt eine Übersicht aller Apps an und ermöglicht die Deinstallation mit wenigen Klicks.


Die Anwendung von 10AppsManager lohnt auch nach größeren Windows-Updates, bei denen auch mal ungefragt neue Programme installiert werden können.

Nach Updates sollten Nutzer auch die Speicherbereinigungsoptionen von Windows aufrufen, zu finden unter Start/Einstellungen/System/Speicher. If you want to trade in the muted black aesthetics of the Stealth for something a little flashier, the GE66 Raider is equipped with similar specs and comes with LED lighting in a sleek aluminum casing. The Stealth is available for preorder from Newegg for $1,599 and will land at Best Buy on April 15. The $1,799 Raider will be available on April 15.


MSI is also refreshing its Creator 17 laptop with a mini-LED display that covers 100 percent DCI-P3 color space, a larger GS75 Stealth, and GE75 Raider with Nvidia’s Super graphics.

Like the MSI Stealth, the appeal of Razer’s new Blade 15 is in its understated aesthetics, and this laptop’s aluminum-clad all-black design houses some powerful specs under the hood. You wouldn’t know it by looking at it, though, as the Max-Q design allows this GeForce RTX 2080 Super-equipped laptop to stay as slim as an ultrabook.


Inside, you now get Nvidia’s best mobile graphics (up to RTX 2080 Super) alongside Intel’s 10th-gen eight-core Core i7-10875H processor that can reach up to 5.1GHz clock speeds.

Other features include Wi-Fi 6 Gig+ connectivity for lag-free gaming along with a 15.6-inch FHD display with 300Hz refresh rate for tear-free action. It also now comes with a full-size SD card slot and can charge fully via USB-C.



The Blade 15 Advanced is the sole Razer model getting refreshed, and it starts at $1,599 when it goes on sale in May. Razer has made some changes to its configurations. The Base Model now comes with a 144Hz and an option for the 4K OLED display.
