Most budget laptops will come with integrated graphics, usually some variant of Intel’s UHD Graphics technology that the company builds into its Core CPUs. That’s going to be good enough for all of your productivity needs and for running casual games or older titles at lower resolutions and graphical details.

However, as our list indicates, you can find budget laptops with entry-level GPUs like Nvidia’s GeForce MX150 and GTX 1050. These will provide a much better gaming and content-creation experience than integrated graphics can manage, and if you’re willing to settle for 1080p and lower graphical details, you can get some real gaming done with either of these chips.


Can I afford a laptop with a 4K display?

Probably not — it wasn’t too long ago when you’d struggle to find Full HD displays available for under $1,000. Besides, budget laptops typically don’t pack in as much battery capacity as more expensive machines, and 4K displays are notorious for sucking down power. Even if you could score a 4K display in a sub-$1,000 laptop, you likely wouldn’t be too happy with its longevity away from a plug.

Being able to take your laptop on-the-go is a nice luxury to have. At the same time, many laptop users have come to understand the importance of purchasing a case to protect their prized PC from scratches and other damage. But some cases come with plain designs and don’t offer much protection.

The side has a dedicated pen holder so you won’t lose track of the little stylus accessory and the whole sleeve is lightweight, making it easy to transport. With a rubberized design, it can take a few knocks and wear too, without marking.

This design doesn’t have a carry strap, and so it may need to be put into another bag for complete portability, but it’s reasonably affordable and will keep your XPS 13 looking good for the foreseeable future.

It does have its weak points, most notably a less than stunning display and thick chassis — it’s dull, but still looks good enough if you crank up the settings. Similarly, the storage options aren’t the quickest, but those are sacrifices that are worth making to keep the price down on such a capable gaming machine.



There are far better gaming laptops out there, but we’d struggle to find one that’s as powerful as Dell’s G3 at this price point. It’s a fantastic, budget gaming machine.


Finding a laptop for video editing under $1,000 isn’t easy. When it comes to video editing, the more cores the better, and a discrete graphics card is a good idea too. The best video editing laptops like the Dell XPS 15 and MacBook Pro 16-inch will cost you well over $2,000.


We don’t usually advise buying older hardware, but if you’re on a tight budget, a previous generation Dell G5 gaming laptop is your best bet. For just $730, you get a six-core laptop with a discrete GTX 1050 Ti graphics card. These are each a generation back from the most current, but you won’t notice a huge drop in performance — especially not for over $300 you’re saving over the new models.


This $730 laptop also gets you 8GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD boot drive, and a 1TB HDD. It’s not a sleek or modern-looking laptop by any means, but if pure video editing power per dollar is what you’re looking for, look no further.

You won’t find six-core or eight-core processors like you get on a laptop like the MacBook Pro 15, Razer Blade, or Dell XPS 15. These content creation machines and gaming laptops will outclass any Chromebook in terms of performance.


Ultrabooks can easily surpass $1,000 even with a basic specification, and something like an upgraded Surface Book can break $3,000. But take a look at popular Chromebooks on the market, and you’ll quickly see just how affordable they are.



For example, HP’s flagship model is $600, while Acer’s Spin 15 is roughly $426. A popular 2017 Samsung model can even be found for $226. Such low prices are one of the strongest market differentiators for Chromebooks. Google’s ultra-premium $1,000 Pixelbook is the only exception.


Ultimately, when people are on a strict budget and can only afford a few hundred dollars for a new laptop, Chromebooks are their first — and often only — choice. No other laptops (and increasingly few tablets) are so affordable.


We’ve tested and reviewed well over 400 laptops over the years, searching for the best of the best. However, with the addition of the Google Play Store, you can also download Android apps to fill in any software gaps. Their implementation in a laptop setting might be a little funky in some cases — some expand full-screen while others remain locked in smartphone screen mode — but Android apps are available if you really need them.


Finally, average Chromebooks have a better battery life than the typical laptop. Although nine or 10 hours is most common, newer models are more likely to have 12-hour battery life. Windows 10 laptops are slowly closing the gap, but on average, Chromebooks last longer.


The limitations of Chrome OS mean you can’t install some important software that you might otherwise need. Some notable examples include certain Adobe applications or any kind of proprietary software that’s restricted to Windows or MacOS. If you rely on similar applications, a Chromebook isn’t the right choice for you.


That also extends to performance in general. Chromebooks do tend to run fast, but in some cases, you’ll be limited by the components inside. Lower-end Chromebooks tend to use older processors that can’t compete with what you get in the Windows and Mac space, especially in terms of multitasking. Then again, if you’re looking at spending $200, a Chromebook is a far better option.


On the higher end, there are options like the HP Chromebook x2 or the Pixelbook, and you’ll find familiar processors like 8th-gen Core i5, which features four cores and plenty of power. Chromebooks tend to fly with these faster options. There are also newer Chromebooks on the way, with Intel’s latest 10th-generation processors, further closing the Chromebook, MacBook, and Windows 10 laptop gap.



One important note to make is that Chromebooks support Linux. If you absolutely need desktop applications, installing Linux is certainly an option. There are Linux versions of Audacity, Firefox, GIMP, OBS Studio, Steam, VirtualBox, and many more, but your favorite application may not offer a Linux-based variant. Check the developer’s website first before ruling out a Chromebook.


Chromebooks are designed with a few specific people in mind. At the forefront are students, as school administrations tend to favor Chromebooks due to their security benefits, sturdy build quality, and software limitations. That means you’ll find cheap Chromebooks in public schools all across the country.


Chromebooks go beyond just cheap, plastic laptops for kids. There are also higher-end options for professionals and college students. Because they tend to be lightweight with long battery life, they are great options for people who need to take their work on the go, whether that’s from class to class or on long flights. Some of these include the Google Pixelbook, Google Pixelbook Go, and the Lenovo Yoga Chromebook C630.



There are certainly those same options in the Windows 10 laptop world. However, in the cheaper price range, Chromebooks can sometimes provide a better value. For example, approximately $500 is where Chromebooks thrive, but Windows 10 laptops at this price tend to get bogged down with a thick chassis and clunky performance.


The most expensive Chromebook you can buy is Google’s Pixelbook, with a $1,000 starting price. It represents the high end not only in premium materials and build quality but also performance.

Unfortunately, there is no way at this time to keep the battery percentage always displayed on modern Apple iPhones. You will always need to open Control Center to view the percentage; this is due to the limitation of screen real estate caused by the display’s notch.



If you have an older Apple device such as an iPhone 8 or earlier, you can follow these steps to show your battery percentage in your status bar. iPhone SE and iPad owners can also use these steps to show the battery percentage since neither has the display notch that iPhone X and later devices showcase.


Now, your Apple device will show the battery percentage at all times in the top-right corner of your screen. To reverse this effect, follow the settings given above once more. Note that when you use Low Power mode on older devices and iPad tablets, the battery percentage will always show — follow the steps below to learn more about this setting.


If you want to save battery life on your device, you can enable Low Power Mode, which also has the benefit of showing the battery percentage in the top-right corner of older Apple devices (the iPhone 8 and earlier), as well as the iPhone SE. Low Power mode will not show the battery status on iPhone X and later devices. This feature is not available on the iPad.


By enabling Low Power Mode, your device will disable the following features: email fetching, hands-free Siri, background app refreshing, automatic downloads, and iCloud Photos uploading. Additionally, some visual effects will be disabled, and auto-lock will now default to 30-seconds. When Low Power mode is active, your battery icon will display as yellow.


Many people consider Chromebooks to be the sleeker, quicker, and even simpler cousin of the traditional laptop. Unlike a Mac or Windows system, a Chromebook relies heavily on the internet for everyday tasks.



Since they’re also typically less expensive, you might be wondering how a Chromebook compares to a regular laptop. Here, the Digital Trends team tells you if they’re a waste of money or an affordable diamond in the rough.


When they first appeared in 2011, Chromebooks were lightweight, low-cost laptops running Google’s Chrome OS platform, and they mainly relied on cloud-based applications. The more affordable nature of these laptops has changed over the years, but the value is still at the heart of what a Chromebook offers.


Primarily offered by Acer, Asus, HP, Dell, and Samsung, Chromebooks tend to be around the size of ultrabooks, with similar slim design features (many are also 2-in-1 hybrids). However, Chromebooks are often far more budget-friendly than an ultrabook or even an average laptop. They are most often seen in schools or as a first-time personal laptop.


Yet higher-end Chromebooks are available, too, like Google’s own Pixelbook. They feature premium aluminum bodies, faster Intel Core processors, and, in some cases, 4K screens. Although you can’t buy a $2,000 Chromebook like you can a Windows 10 laptop or MacBook, there is now a wide range of options depending on your needs.


As opposed to Windows 10 or MacOS, Chromebooks have their own operating system called Chrome OS. Although there are basic computing elements, such as a file manager and an app launcher, the focus of these devices is the Google Chrome web browser. Because you can’t download web-based apps, most of the action happens within Chrome’s tabs.


That might sound limiting at first, but many applications already offer web versions, such as Spotify, Netflix, Gmail, Slack, and Evernote. Due to the prevalence of web applications, many people spend the majority of their time in a web browser anyway. If your typical workflow resembles this scenario, transitioning to a Chromebook will be relatively smooth. Just connect to Wi-Fi and proceed with your browsing as normal.

Sanyo’s Eneloop was one of the top picks in our original list, and remains one of our favorites even though Panasonic now manufacturers the batteries. The Eneloop Pro is the newest version, and it sports a capacity of 2,500mAh. The Pros can only be charged 500 times or so, but their performance is what makes them so good. Eneloops simply work better than ordinary batteries, and perform flawlessly both in everyday conditions and extreme temperatures. Plus, the batteries don’t exhibit any sort of memory effect, meaning you can recharge them when they’re fully or partially drained.


AmazonBasic’s 2000mAh rechargeable batteries are particularly dependable. They’re designed to maintain 80% of their battery capacity for two years, even when not in use, thanks to the very slow self-discharge feature built in. Amazon rates the batteries as usable for up to 1,000 charges, an excellent feature for making sure they last as long as possible. Our link takes you to an eight-pack, but other sizes are available, and the whole line of AmazonBasic rechargeable batteries is very good if you want to pick up some other types, too. The batteries are recyclable at the end of their lives.


You’ve probably never heard of Powerex, but the company’s Imedion batteries get high marks for being a great mix of performance and value. They have nearly the same capacity as the Eneloop Pros (2,600mAh), although they won’t perform as well over time. If you need to store these batteries long-term — i.e. over a year — they should retain about 85 percent of their original charge, and you should see about 1,000 charge cycles before the batteries need to be replaced. Performance in high temperatures is also impressive.


Energizer is a household name, and the company’s Recharge Universal brand is widely available. While they offer only 2,000mAh capacity, they remain one of the cheaper options among top-tier rechargeable batteries. Tests have shown these batteries to keep up with more expensive options when it comes to performance, and unless you need the larger capacity, they make a good option for your wireless keyboard or mouse.



If you’re willing to take a risk with an off-brand alternative, try EBL’s rechargeable batteries. Each battery sports 2,800mAh, and you get eight in a pack instead of the typical four. The company also claims its batteries will retain most of their charge even after three years of storage. While we don’t have any experience with these batteries ourselves, reviews on Amazon are overwhelmingly positive.


Panasonic is back with a revamped version of its Eneloop AAA batteries: The Pro batteries are high-capacity, 950mAh units that are rated to last for 500 charge cycles without developing any issues. You can store them for up to a year when not in use, and they’ll maintain 85% of their charge. They’re also quite versatile and able to weather extreme temperatures and be recharged from any capacity as needed. That makes these AAAs an easy recommendation for someone who wants reliable recharging in a battery size that doesn’t always have a lot of good options.


A docking station is designed to make life easier for more complex laptop setups. These stations allow you to route monitor connections through your laptop, charge accessories, hold extra storage, and make your laptop a bit more functional. It’s an ideal solution for managing projects that take you to your laptop, over to larger monitors, and back to your laptop again, as well as streaming games to an audience, important editing or design work, and more.

Since the Surface Laptop 3 was released late last year, there have been multiple reports of owners suddenly finding cracks on its display. In most cases, the damage appeared without explanation, as the owners claimed to have been very careful with the laptop. In addition, the issue seemed to only affect the models with aluminum cases, not those with Alcantara fabric, according to ZDNet.


Microsoft has now responded after an investigation into the Surface Laptop 3 cracked screen incidents. The company has found that “in a very small percentage of cases, a hard foreign particle may cause a hairline fracture in the glass that may seem to appear unexpectedly or without visible cause.”


Microsoft advised Surface Laptop 3 owners who have experienced the issue to contact Microsoft Support in order to avail of a free repair within the device’s warranty period, which should not be a problem as it is a fairly new product. For those who have already paid to fix the problem, they may be able to apply for a reimbursement.

While there are many variations of the G7, the 15.6-inch G7 15 on our list uses a ninth-generation Intel Core i5 processor with 8GB of RAM for standard multitasking and above-average gaming. If you want a powerful gaming laptop that doubles as a game storage unit, then you definitely want the Dell G7 15. You can find it on Dell’s site where it’s discounted from $1,050 to $850.

It uses an AMD Ryzen 7 3750H processor, which is roughly the same power as a ninth-generation Intel Core i5, with a huge 16GB of RAM for all your multitasking needs. Where the Zephyrus G stands out from the pack is in its game visuals, boasting an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q graphics card. With this, it can deliver an average of 50 frames per second on ultra-high settings, even on heavy-duty games like Anthem, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and Control, so you can play just about anything and not have to worry about visual lag.

Die CES 2018 ist vorbei. Was mit der Präsentation von Kühlschränken, Waschmaschinen und Fernsehern begann, ist heute eine digitale Spielwiese, die weit über die Branche der Unterhaltungselektronik hinaus wächst. In Las Vegas präsentierten die großen Marken in diesem Jahr vor allem Vernetztes.


Interessanterweise sieht der Besucher auf der CES von Jahr zu Jahr weniger Smartphones. Das ist weder verwunderlich noch traurig. Erwähnenswert sind zwei Lösungen: Der Hersteller ZTE zeigte ein faltbares Display, das aufklappbar ist und zwei Displays, die zu einem verbunden werden können.

Auf mich hat die elegante und großformatige Nutzungsmöglichkeit einen sehr guten Eindruck gemacht. Außerdem zeigte Skyworth ein biegsames AMOLED-Display, beispielhaft als Armband. Beide Produkte waren keine Sensation, aber doch ein Fingerzeig auf ein spannendes Anwendungsumfeld für eine wörtlich „flexible“ Nutzung.

Wie schon in den vergangenen Jahren sind es wieder die Automobilhersteller, die auf der CES Präsenz zeigen. Autonomes Fahren ist nach wie vor das große Thema: Audi, BWM & Co demonstrierten die Integration von Sensoren zur Erkennung von Gegenständen und die Datenübermittlung per Mobilfunkstandard 5G und die Interaktion zwischen Fahrzeugen.



Meiner Ansicht nach liegen noch große Brocken im Weg zum Durchbruch, die allerdings nicht auf Messen weggeräumt werden können. Hier meine ich vor allem Versicherungs-Aspekte und auch ethisch schwer lösbare Konflike im Straßenverkehr. Sicherer als heute dürfte der Verkehr mit autonomen Fahrzeugen werden und sich langfristig durchsetzen. Wann und wie genau – das steht noch in den Sternen.

Seriöse Siegel wie der "Blaue Engel", aber auch Tests von Stiftung Warentest, Öko-Test oder Bewertungen des Reparaturportals "ifixit.com" helfen weiter. Auch hilfreich - falls vorhanden - die Umweltdatenblätter einzelner Produkte.


Ansonsten rät das UBA zur schonenden und langen Nutzung von Elektrogeräten. Vor vermeidbaren Schäden schützen Hüllen oder Display-Folien. Ausgediente Geräte gibt man am besten bei kommunalen Sammelstellen oder im Handel zurück oder verkauft sie. Wenn möglich sollte nicht jedes Gerät neu angeschafft werden. In vielen Fällen können auch gebrauchte Geräte vorgezogen werden.


Mit dem Rechner Lisa unternahm Apple vor 35 Jahren den ersten Versuch, eine grafische Bedienoberfläche in den Massenmarkt einzuführen. Das war bahnbrechend. Jedoch scheiterte einer der wichtigsten Computer der Technik-Geschichte grandios.


Manchmal fällt der dritte Schritt viel schwerer als die beiden ersten. So erging es zumindest Anfang der 80er Jahre dem damals noch sehr jungen Start-up Apple Computer. Den ersten halbwegs brauchbaren Heimcomputer, den "Apple I", hatte Mitbegründer Steve Wozniak schon 1976 entwickelt. Mit dem "Apple II" wurde das Unternehmen dann aus dem Stand, bzw. aus der Garage der Eltern von Steve Jobs heraus kommerziell erfolgreich. Die Verkaufszahlen stiegen rasant: von 2500 Geräten im Jahr 1977 auf 210.000 im Jahr 1981.


Einen Nachfolger für den ersten Mega-Erfolg von Apple zu finden, erwies sich jedoch als große Herausforderung. Erst am 19. Januar 1983, vor 35 Jahren, konnte Steve Jobs den Rechner "Lisa" ankündigen. Der nach Jobs Tochter benannte Rechner sollte den Erfolg des "Apple II" fortschreiben. Doch es kam ganz anders.


Zunächst hatte Steve Jobs auf die Entwicklung eines "Apple III" gesetzt, der sich vom Vorgängermodell "Apple II" gar nicht so sehr unterscheiden sollte. 80 statt 40 Zeichen pro Bildschirmzeile, mehr Speicher, kleinere Verbesserungen im Detail, aber kein großer Wurf. Es zeichnete sich dann schnell ab, dass dieser per Tastatureingaben gesteuerte Computer die PC-Revolution nicht wirklich vorantreiben konnte.



Der Meinungsumschwung bei Steve Jobs wurde vor allem durch mehrere Besuche 1979 im legendären kalifornische

n Forschungszentrum Xerox Parc im benachbarten Palo Alto ausgelöst: "Ich war total geblendet von dem ersten Ding, das sie mir zeigten: die grafische Bedienoberfläche. Ich dachte, das ist das beste Ding, was mir je in meinem Leben unter die Augen gekommen ist", sagte Jobs 1995 in einem TV-Interview.


Im Xerox Parc hatte Jobs quasi die Erleuchtung gesehen. Nun wollte er auch bei Apple einen Computer bauen, der kinderleicht mit einer Maus zu bedienen war. Den Eintritt in das Forschungszentrum hatte sich Apple durch einen Aktiendeal erkauft: Xerox durfte noch vor dem Börsengang von Apple 100.000 Aktien des Start-up-Unternehmens für den Schnäppchenpreis von einer Millionen Dollar kaufen. Den Xerox-Managern dämmerte allerdings erst zehn Jahre später, dass sie Apple das geistige Eigentum ihrer Forscher für ein Taschengeld auf dem Silbertablett serviert hatten. Eine Schadenersatzklage gegen Apple hatte aber vor Gericht keinen Erfolg.

Apple unternahm unterdessen 1983 mit "Lisa" den ersten Versuch, die grafische Bedienoberfläche auf dem Massenmarkt einzuführen. In Anzeigen wurde der Rechner als "Maserati für Ihr Gehirn" beworben. "Lisa war der erste kommerziell vertriebene Computer, der über eine Maus und die für uns heute selbstverständliche Benutzeroberfläche mit Fenstern und Symbolen verfügte", sagt Andreas Stolte vom Heinz-Nixdorf-Museumsforum in Paderborn. "Zuvor mussten die Nutzer komplizierte Befehlszeilen eintippen, um den Computer auf Trab zu halten. So vereinfachte der nach Jobs Tochter benannte Computer die Bedienung enorm."



Apple wollte die Kunden mit sieben Büro- und Grafikprogrammen und dem damals beachtlichen Arbeitsspeicher von einem Megabyte für Lisa gewinnen. Allerdings war der Preis viel zu hoch, um die vielen Interessenten tatsächlich zum Kauf zu bewegen. In den USA kostete der Computer knapp 10.000 Dollar, in Deutschland waren das rund 30.000 DM. Nicht einmal 30.000 Stück wurden verkauft.


Im April 1985 zog Apple die Reißleine und stoppte die Produktion. Unverkäufliche 2700 Exemplare wurden heimlich auf einer Müllkippe in Utah vergraben. Das Prinzip der grafischen Bedienoberfläche landete aber nicht auf dem Müll, sondern setzte sich auf breiter Fläche durch. Im Januar 1984 brachte Apple dann den ersten Macintosh auf den Markt, der nicht so teuer wie Lisa war und sich nach einer schwierigen Startphase dann besser verkaufte. Im November 1985 lieferte Microsoft eine erste Version von Windows ebenfalls mit grafischer Benutzeroberfläche aus.

Februar sind das EliteBook 830 G5 mit 13-Zoll-Bildschirm und das EliteBook 840 G5, laut HP "das dünnste 14-Zoll-Business-Notebook der Welt" sowie das EliteBook 850 G5 verfügbar. Letztere sind mit jeweils einer separaten Grafikkarte (AMD Radeon RX540) ausgestattet.


Das 830 G5 und das 840 G5 sind in Deutschland ab Ende Februar ab 1.600 Euro zu haben. Der Preis des Topmodells 850 G5 ist noch nicht bekannt. Das kann man durchaus als eine Kampfansage in Richtung Microsoft verstehen.

Auch Microsofts Windows 10 hat einen Nachtmodus. Beim nächtlichen Arbeits-Marathon kann ein solcher Blaulichtfilter durchaus angenehm und gut für die Gesundheit sein.


Windows 10 bietet einen Nachtmodus, der die blauen Bestandteile im Licht, das Displays ausstrahlen, filtert. Das soll den Augen beim Arbeiten in Dämmerung und dunkler Umgebung Entspannung bringen und später das Einschlafen leichter machen. Die Schaltfläche für den Modus findet sich im Info-Center in der unteren rechten Ecke des Desktop-Bildschirms. Hier kann mit einem Klick auf "Nachtmodus" die wärmere Farbtemperatur aktiviert werden.


Wer möchte, dass dies automatisch geschieht, zum Beispiel wenn es dunkel wird, kann das auch über die Systemeinstellungen erledigen. Dort lässt sich unter "System" und "Anzeigen" auch ein Zeitraum einstellen, in dem der Nachtmodus des Bildschirms automatisch aktiv ist.


Die weit verbreitete Abspiel-Software VLC Media Player kann nun über den Chromecast-Standard Videos an kompatible Geräte streamen. Außerdem wird in der gerade veröffentlichten Version 3.0 auch die Wiedergabe von 8K-Auflösungen, Hochkontrast-Material (HDR), 360-Grad-Filmen oder 3D-Audio unterstützt, wie die Entwickler mitteilen. Ebenfalls neu: Nutzer können vom Player aus die Inhalte lokaler Netzwerkspeicher durchsuchen. Der Open-Source-Player steht sowohl für Windows und macOS als auch für Android und iOS zum Download bereit.

Lenovo ruft eine Generation des Thinkpad X1 Carbon zurück – ob Kunden betroffen sind, können sie auf einer Supportseite des Herstellers ermitteln. Dafür reicht die Eingabe der Seriennummer aus, erklärt Lenovo. Thinkpadbesitzer aus Deutschland können auch die Telefonnummer 0800 / 500 46 18 anrufen und den Status ihres Geräts prüfen lassen.


Lenovo hat etliche Exemplare des Thinkpad X1 Carbon (5. Generation) zu einer technischen Überprüfung zurückgerufen, weil sich eine Schraube lösen und die Batterie beschädigen könnte. Schlimmstenfalls besteht dadurch Brandgefahr. Betroffen können Geräte der Bautypen 20HQ, 20HR, 20K3 und 20K4 sein, die zwischen Dezember 2016 und Oktober 2017 hergestellt wurden. Nach Angaben des Notebookherstellers handelt es sich dabei deutschlandweit um eine geringe fünfstellige Anzahl.



Betroffene Geräte werden einer Überprüfung unterzogen und sollen kostenlos repariert werden. Berichte über Schäden durch die fehlerhafte Schraube seien noch nicht bekannt.

Der US-Computerhersteller Dell startet ein Programm, um Gold aus alten Elektronikgeräten zu gewinnen. Es wird ab Frühjahr 2018 recycelt und unter anderem in Millionen von PC-Hauptplatinen verbaut.

Apple may be going all-in on its quest to ditch Intel in favor of in-house processors. In a new research note obtained by MacRumors, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims the Cupertino, California-based manufacturer will introduce “several” new Mac notebooks as well as desktop computers next year.

As rumored before, these new Macs will be powered by Arm-based processors instead of the x86 processors they have come with for ages. Switching to the Arm architecture, Kuo believes, will bring down processor costs by 40% to 60% and enable Apple to offer a more diverse Mac lineup.



In addition to that, Arm-based computers have plenty more advantages over their x86 counterparts. Since they’re usually reserved for mobile devices, they consume less power which ultimately leads to longer endurance, and can function in more compact designs — making them ideal for on-the-go productivity, a trait customers increasingly seek.


What’s more intriguing here is that Apple is also developing desktop computers with Arm processors. Even though Apple’s mobile processors for the iPad Pro are known to be quite powerful for their compact design, it’s unclear how the company plans to integrate them inside iMacs. Plus, Arm chips are low-power components, so there’s also the question of how they will perform while being always connected to an active power source.

Meanwhile, Apple is bolstering its line of iPad Pro tablets with trackpad support. Therefore it remains to be seen how the company will position these ARM-based products.


However, as we’ve seen in the case of Windows PCs, the success of Arm-based computers hinges strongly on software support. Their upsides over x86 won’t kick in until third-party Mac developers update their apps. Microsoft’s Surface Pro X, for instance, had an especially bumpy launch due to the absence of ample Arm-compatible apps. It is possible we may hear more on macOS updates for Arm computers at Apple’s forthcoming online-only annual developer conference.



The new research note falls in line with Kuo’s earlier prediction where he said Apple will likely introduce new MacBooks with its own chips by late 2020 or early 2021. While there is a chance the coronavirus pandemic may stymie some of these timelines, Kuo expects “operations at MacBook-related suppliers” to “improve significantly starting in late March.”

Zum Glück geht es meistens auch ohne Flash. Einige Browser blocken ohnehin Flash-Inhalte in den Standardeinstellungen. "Bei Google Chrome und Microsoft Edge werden die meisten Flash-Inhalte erst mal blockiert und bei Firefox kann man diese Funktion zumindest einschalten", erklärt Ronald Eikenberg. Auch das BSI rät dazu, solche aktiven Inhalte wie Flash als Standard zu deaktivieren.


Aber was ist, wenn man einmal eine Website aufruft, die noch nicht ohne Flash funktioniert? "Sollte man wirklich eine Webseite haben, die man unbedingt nutzen will und die es nur mit Flash gibt, dann würde ich die in Chrome oder einem Chrome-basierten Browser angucken", rät Informatiker Jörg Geiger vom Fachmagazin "Chip". Dort kann man Flash dann für diese Seite ausnahmsweise erlauben. Microsoft Edge unter Windows 10 bietet diese Funktion auch.


Aber wenn so viele Stellen von Flash abraten: Wieso ist die Software dann noch so verbreitet? "Letztlich kann man sagen, dass der Adobe Flash Player zur Steinzeit-Technologie gehört", sagt Ronald Eikenberg. Der Nachfolger ist mit HTML 5 längst da und breitet sich immer weiter aus.


Beginnen wir mit dem neuen Microsoft Surface Book 2 mit 15-Zoll-Display. Es wird seit dem 15. Februar 2018 in Deutschland ausgeliefert.

"Surface Book 2 ist unsere Antwort auf eine mobile Workstation ohne Kompromisse in Sachen Funktionalität und Leistung“, sagt Andre Hansel, Senior Product Manager Surface bei Microsoft Deutschland. „Als vielseitiger Laptop, leistungsstarkes Tablet und tragbares Studio in einem, bieten wir professionellen Anwendern hoch leistungsfähige Hardware auf Basis von Windows 10.“ Surface-Notebooks werden unter anderem bei der Lufthansa eingesetzt und ersetzen die schwereren Bordbücher der Piloten.


Neben den schon verfügbaren Versionen mit kleinerem 13,5-Zoll-Display gibt es "Surface Book 2" ab sofort auch in drei weiteren Ausstattungsvarianten mit 15-Zoll-Bildschirm. Das größere Display ist auch zum Filme angucken gut geeignet, das hochauflösendes "PixelSense"- Display macht auf den ersten Blick einen sehr scharfen Eindruck.



Je nach Ausstattung liegen die Preise bei 2.800, 3.300 und 3.800 Euro. An Bord sind jeweils der Hauptprozessor Intel Core i7 mit vier Kernen der 8. Generation, einer NVIDIA GeForce Grafikkarte GTX 1060 mit 6 Gigabyte Grafikspeicher und jeweils 16 Gigabyte Hauptspeicher (RAM).

Das Einsteigermodell bietet 256 Gigabyte SSD-Speicher, das mittlere Modell 512 Gigabyte und das Topmodell eine satte 1 Terabyte SSD für 3.800 Euro.


Microsoft gibt eine Akkulaufzeit von bis zu 17 Stunden an. Anspruchsvolle Programme von Adobe, Autodesk oder Dassault sollen unter Windows 10 ebenso flüssig wie aktuelle Games und Windows Mixed Reality- Anwendungen laufen. Die Tatstatur reagiert präzise, die Innenflächen sind angenehm glatt und ohne störenden Ecken und Kanten. Die Verarbeitung wirkt solide und hochwertig, das Design neutral, edel und nicht zu auffällig.

Besonders vielseitig wird das Notebook dadurch, dass sich der Display-Teil abnehmen lässt. Dieser lässt sich mittels Touchscreen als Tablet nutzen. Braucht der Nutzer mehr Rechenpower, kann er das Display-Teil umgekehrt an die Einheit mit der Tastatur andocken, in dem auch die Grafikkarte steckt. So ist man für fast jede Anwendung gut gewappnet.


Edles Design in grau-silber bieten auf die neuen Business-Notebooks von HP. Der Hersteller setzt auf ein Keilprofi und ein eloxiertes Aluminium-Gehäuse. Die EliteBook 800-Serie besitzt ein "ultra-leuchtendes" Display, das sich automatisch an wechselnde Lichtbedingungen anpassen soll. Angeboten werden zwei Modelle mit 13 und 14-Zoll-Monitor. Die Notebooks wirken durchaus edel und solide, die Ähnlichkeit zu Apples MacBooks fällt sofort auf.

Die Flash Player-Ära neigt sich dem Ende: Über die fehlerhafte Software hat sich oft Malware auf die Computer geschlichen. Dabei funktionieren die meisten Webseiten längst ohne den Player. Experten empfehlen Anwendern, die Software endgültig von ihren Rechnern zu tilgen.


Videos, Animationen, Spiele, Werbeanzeigen - auf Internetseiten brachte diese Dinge jahrelang Adobes Flash zum Laufen. Mittlerweile macht die Plattform für Multimedia-Inhalte aber hauptsächlich durch ständige Sicherheits-Patches von sich reden. Immer wieder warnen Experten, Browserhersteller und Einrichtungen wie das Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) vor der Software, die aufgrund ihrer vielen Sicherheitslücken ein beliebtes Einfallstor für Kriminelle ist.



"Flash ist momentan ein großes Sicherheitsrisiko, da es einen großen Raum für Angriffe schafft", sagt Ronald Eikenberg vom Computermagazin "c't". "Daher sind Nutzer besser beraten, den Flash Player nicht zu aktivieren." Besonders wer veraltete Versionen des Players installiert hat, ist angreifbar.

Schon der Besuch einer Webseite mit manipulierten Flash-Inhalten reicht schlimmstenfalls aus, um schädliche Software auf den Computer zu laden, persönliche Daten auszuspionieren oder den Rechner für andere unlautere Aktivitäten zu missbrauchen.


Auch aus Datenschutzgründen kann man Flash kritisch sehen: Sogenannte Flash Cookies erlauben ein Tracking von Nutzern und lassen sich nur schwer entfernen. Und auch der Zugriff von Flash auf Webcam und Mikrofon lässt sich nur schwer kontrollieren.


Viele Nutzer treffen auf Flash vor allem als Zusatzprogramm für einen Browser - ein sogenanntes Plug-in. Neben den ohnehin schon häufig auftretenden Sicherheitslücken gibt es hier ein weiteres Problem: Nicht alle Browser halten Flash von allein auf dem neuesten Stand. Nutzer müssen hier immer selbst dranbleiben.


Aber es geht auch anders: "Für Google Chrome und die Browser von Microsoft, den Internet Explorer und Microsoft Edge, ist das weniger brisant", sagt Ronald Eikenberg. "Diese Browser aktualisieren den Flash Player automatisch." Windows 10 hat von Haus aus Flash an Bord.



Für Apple-Nutzer stellt sich die Situation etwas anders dar: Das iPhone, iPad und der iPod touch unterstützen überhaupt kein Flash. Und auf den Mac-Computern des Unternehmens müssen Nutzer Flash in Eigenregie einrichten, wenn sie es denn haben wollen.

Dabei stoßen Windows- und Mac-Nutzer aber regelmäßig auf Unannehmlichkeiten: Etwa, dass unachtsame Nutzer bei der Installation von Flash gleich noch weitere Software untergeschoben kriegen.

Um zu kontrollieren, ob das Update bereits installiert worden ist oder eine Aktualisierung selbst anzustoßen, geben Nutzer im Windows-Startmenü "Windows Update" ein. In dem sich öffnenden Fenster wird angezeigt, welche Updates installiert sind ("Windows ist auf dem neuesten Stand" und Haken auf grünem Hintergrund). Wird dieses nicht angezeigt, klicken Sie in der linken Liste auf "Nach Updates suchen" (siehe Punkt 1. in der Grafik).


Jetzt sucht Windows nach den neuesten Sicherheitspatches und installiert sie. Alle installierten Programme können sie unter dem Punkt "Updateverlauf anzeigen" ansehen (siehe Punkt 2. in der Grafik). In der Liste sollte ein aktueller Eintrag zu "Windows Defender" oder "Malware Protection Engine" stehen.


Die "Malware Protection Engine" ist Bestandteil verschiedener Sicherheitsprodukte von Microsoft. Sie steckt im "Windows Defender" ebenso wie in den "Microsoft Security Essentials", ebenso in der "Forefront Endpoint Protection" und in der "Windows Intune Endpoint Protection".

Apple will offenbar ab 2020 eigene Prozessoren in seinen Mac-Computern einsetzen. Das hat die Aktie des Chip-Riesen Intel am Montag auf Talfahrt geschickt.


Apple nutzt seit über einem Jahrzehnt Intel-Chips in seinen Macs, während in Mobilgeräten wie iPhones und iPads Prozessoren aus eigener Entwicklung eingesetzt werden. Sie basieren auf der Architektur des Chipentwicklers ARM, Apple steckt da aber auch viele eigene Technologien rein. Schon seit Jahren wurde spekuliert, der Konzern könnte auch bei den Mac-Computer auf eigene Prozessoren umsteigen.


Intel verlor bereits das Rennen um den Platz in Smartphones und Tablets an die ARM-Welt – und setzt auf neue Geschäfte mit Rechenzentren und Autoindustrie, während der PC-Markt über Jahre geschrumpft ist.

Die Nachrichtenagentur Bloomberg schränkte ein, das Projekt mit dem Codenamen "Kalamata" sei noch in einer frühen Phase. Ziel sei, die Apple-Geräte noch besser zusammenarbeiten zu lassen.

Deshalb wurde in den vergangenen Jahren bereits die Software der Computer zum Teil in Anlehnung an die iPhone-Bedienung angepasst und Apple führte bereits Funktionen ein, die nahtlos zwischen Mobilgeräten und Macs wechseln lassen.


Elektroroller habe in der Stadt ihre klaren Vorteile. Mit dem "Stigo" geht nun eine elektrisch angetriebene Mofa-Alternative an den Start. t-online.de ist den kleinen Klapproller ausführlich Probe gefahren.

Zugegeben: Der Januar ist nicht der ideale Monat, um einen Elektroroller zu testen. Es ist zu kalt, wird zu früh dunkel und nur die härtesten Radfahrer sind noch unterwegs. Doch der Mini-Klapproller "Stigo" mit seinem kleinen Elektromotor sieht einfach zu verlockend aus. Und wozu gibt es Winterkleidung?

Aus der Verpackung holen, aufklappen und losfahren dauert keine drei Minuten.

Der kleine, aber kräftige E-Motor mit 250 Watt legt zügig und lautlos los, das Fahren macht viel Spaß – vor allem im Großraumbüro. Bei genau 20 km/h regelt der Stigo ab.


Auf der Straße macht sich diese geringe Geschwindigkeit schnell bemerkbar. Der Stigo hat ein Mofa-Kennzeichen und eine Straßenzulassung, gehört also nicht auf den Bürgersteig. Am Rand der Fahrbahn zischen die Autos und LKWs an dem niedrigen Gefährt vorbei, mit gemütlichen Radfahrern kann es mithalten. Das helle Vorderlicht sorgt dafür, dass der Roller nicht übersehen wird. Schmerzlich vermisst man aber eine Federung. Der Hartplastik-Sitz und die kleinen Räder geben keinen Millimeter nach. Bequem geht anders.

Das größte Manko ist allerdings die viel zu geringe Reichweite, nach nur etwa fünf Kilometern geht dem Akku schon die Puste aus und die Ladeanzeige in den roten Bereich. Der "Stigo +" mit größerem Akku soll deutlich mehr Reichweite bieten. Aufgeladen werden kann er zum Glück an jeder Steckdose, das Netzteil darf man nicht vergessen. Der Akku ist fest verbaut und lässt sich nicht herausnehmen. Zusammengeklappt lässt sich der Roller gut die Treppen zur U-Bahn heruntertragen. Mit 14 Kilo ist er etwa so schwer wie ein großer Koffer.

Multitools certainly aren’t a new idea when it comes to outdoor/survival gear, but the Baha shovel is totally different than the Leathermans and pocket knives you’re probably used to seeing. Rather than tucking a bunch of tools into the handle of a folding knife, the creators of this monstrosity decided to tuck them into the handle of a shovel. The result is a multifunctional outdoor tool with 21 different functions — most of which you simply can’t get with something as small as a pocket knife.


This is definitely one of the grossest yet most oddly appealing things I’ve ever encountered on Kickstarter. You know those handheld facial vacuum things that will suck blackheads out of your pores? It’s that, but with a camera embedded in the nozzle and outfitted with a video uplink — so you can sync it with your phone and watch in real time as the blackheads squirm out of your skin. And yes, it even comes with a social function that allows you to record clips and share them on social media. Whoever thought of this is a disgusting genius.

First and foremost, it’s the first electric skateboard we’ve seen from Shark — a company that got its start making the oddly-shaped wheels you see in the video above. Second, it’s also apparently the thinnest board in the game, and has speed/range specs that outshine some of the most popular and well-reviewed skateboards on the market right now. Color us intrigued.

It’s got an accordion-style design that allows it to fold up in the most compact/convenient shape ever.



Electric skateboards are a dime a dozen these days, but this one has a feature that puts it a cut above the rest: a swappable battery system. That means that if you’re riding and the battery dies, you don’t have to find a charger and wait for an hour while the battery tops off. Instead, you can just click in a new cell and keep riding. It’s honestly a mystery why this feature isn’t more common on electric skateboards.
