Mit der Vorstellung des nächsten Spitzengeräts nehmen sich die Südkoreaner nun Zeit.Samsung zufolge waren es die Batterien, die zum Debakel mit dem Smartphone Galaxy Note 7 führten. Der Marktführer will die Untersuchung nutzen, um die Qualitätskontrolle bei Akkus und Geräten zu verbessern.


Für den Smartphone-Weltmarktführer steht viel auf dem Spiel. Die Einführung des nächsten Spitzenmodells könnte zeigen, wie sehr die Kunden dem Unternehmen noch vertrauen.


Was sind die Gründe für die Brände gewesen?Schon bei der ersten Rückrufaktion im vergangenen September nannte Samsung fehlerhafte Akkuzellen als wahrscheinliche Ursache für die Brände des Note 7. Dies bestätigte Samsung nun nach monatelangen eigenen Analysen sowie Überprüfungen durch drei unabhängige Industrie-Organisationen. Demnach traten die Defekte sowohl beim Design als auch bei der Herstellung der Batterien auf.


Wie kommt es aber, dass auch die Akkus der Ersatzgeräte Feuer fingen?Beim Batterietyp des ersten Zulieferers verursachte ein Designfehler einen Kurzschluss, der dann wiederum dazu führte, dass sich die Akkus erhitzten oder dass Brände ausgelöst wurden. Beim zweiten Typ führten laut


Samsung die Defekte in einem anderen Teil des Produkts zu ähnlichen Ergebnissen. Die Fehler seien entstanden, "weil wir für das Note 7 mit mehren Funktionen stärkere Akkus brauchten, und die Batterie-Hersteller wandten neue Produktionsmethoden an", sagte Spartenchef Koh Dong Jin.



Warum veröffentlicht Samsung den ausführlichen Ursachen-Bericht? Samsung geriet durch das Debakel stark unter Druck, die genauen Ursachen zu benennen. Der Aufwand für die Untersuchungen, bei denen mehr als 200 000 Geräte geprüft worden sein sollen, zeigt auch, wie kompliziert die Suche nach der Fehlerquelle bei dem High-Tech-Gerät ist. Es ging dabei nicht nur um die Akkus, sondern auch um die Frage, ob es bei Hardware und Software des Gerätes ebenfalls Fehler gab. Das schloss Samsung jetzt aus. Die Firma ist gezwungen, offen mit den Problemen umzugehen, weil das nächste Smartphone-Spitzenmodell Galaxy S8 bereits in Entwicklung ist. Es kommt Samsung auch darauf an, verlorengegangenes Vertrauten der Kunden zurückzugewinnen.


Samsung will trotz des Debakels an der Note-Serie festhalten. Wann allerdings das nächste Phablet - eine Mischung aus Smartphone und Tabletcomputer - herauskommt, ist unklar. Auch zur Markteinführung der neuen Generationen der S-Reihe macht Samsung noch keine Angaben. Am Montag schloss Spartenchef Koh aus, dass das Galaxy S8 wie sonst üblich beim Mobile World Congress Ende Februar gezeigt wird. "Das Galaxy S8 wird ein Schlüsselprodukt für die Zukunft von Samsung Electronics sein", urteilte Analyst Lee Seung Woo vom Wertpapierhaus IBK Securties in Seoul. Es sei sehr wichtig für das Unternehmen, mögliche Produktprobleme auszuschließen. Samsung werde aber versuchen, beim Marketing aggressiv aufzutreten, prognostiziere Lee.



Wie will Samsung ähnliche Probleme in Zukunft vermeiden?Das Unternehmen kündigte strengere Sicherheitschecks ein. So gibt es einen Acht-Punkte-Plan für die Überprüfung von Batterien. Zu üblichen Maßnahmen wie Haltbarkeitsprüfungen sollen Lade- und Entladetests und hinzukommen. Daneben gründete das Unternehmen eine "Akku-Beratergruppe" mit externen Fachleuten.


Warum hat die Untersuchung so lange gedauert?Samsung hatte bei der Prüfung drei externe Unternehmen mit ins Boot geholt, darunter auch den TÜV Rheinland. Das Problem mit den Akkus aus Samsungs eigener Herstellung dürfte relativ schnell gefunden worden sein: Die Akkus waren zu groß geraten und hatten keinen Platz für eine Ausdehnung. Unter Druck wächst jedoch die Brandgefahr der Bauteile. Überraschend gerieten aber auch Ersatzakkus in Brand. Für sie hatte Samsung extra einen anderen Hersteller beauftragt, Amperex aus Hongkong. Amperex fuhr die Produktion unter großem Zeitdruck hoch - dabei soll es dann zu Herstellungsfehlern gekommen sein.

Man wird über seine Webcam beobachtet: Per Malware können Angreifer tatsächlich die Kameras von Geräten übernehmen. "Die Schadsoftware ist auch in der Lage, die LED zur Erkennung der Nutzung zu deaktivieren", sagt Tim Griese. Da die meisten Nutzer ihre Webcam ohnehin selten verwenden, ist das Abkleben eine gute Strategie.


Die Spionier-Gefahr besteht auch bei Smartphones, Tablets oder Smart-TVs. "Das Zukleben ist hier aber in der Regel unpraktisch", ergänzt Scherschel. Entsprechend inkonsequenter seien hier die Nutzer, obwohl theoretisch die gleiche Gefahr besteht. Scherschel rät in allen Sicherheitsfragen grundsätzlich: "Dem Nutzer sollte nicht alles egal sein. Er sollte aber auch nicht paranoid werden."



Mit der neuesten Ausführung des Surface Pro tritt Microsoft gegen Apples und Samsungs High-End-Tablets, aber auch gegen vollwertige Notebooks an. Ein schwieriger Spagat, der aber erstaunlich gut gelingt. Wenn da nicht ein paar kleine Details wären.Das soll also die Zukunft von Laptops sein: ein Tablet, dazu eine Anstecktastatur, eventuell noch eine Maus oder ein Stift. "Vielseitiger Laptop" nennt Microsoft sein neues Surface Pro.


Beim Surface Pro handelt es sich um ein sogenanntes Convertible, das mit Tastatur inklusive Trackpad erst zum Laptop wird. Äußerlich hat sich beim fünften Surface Pro im Vergleich zum Vorgänger kaum etwas verändert. Auf der Vorderseite ist ein 12,3 Zoll großer Bildschirm mit einer Auflösung von 2736 mal 1824 Pixeln.Anschlüsse gibt es je einmal für USB 3.0, Micro-SD-Karte und Mini-DisplayPort, hinzu kommt eine 3,5-Millimeter-Kopfhörerbuchse. Für Strom- und Tastaturanschluss setzt Microsoft auf eigene Schnittstellen. USB-C sucht man nach wie vor vergeblich.


Im Inneren des Tablets ist allerdings viel passiert - vor allem bei der Akkulaufzeit. Kam das Surface Pro 4 gerade mal vier bis fünf Stunden mit einer Ladung aus, schafft das aktuelle Modell unter normaler Arbeitslast locker sieben bis acht Stunden. Microsoft spricht gar von 12,5 Stunden Videowiedergabe mit einer Akkuladung.



Die günstigeren Modelle mit Intel-Core-m3- und i5-Prozessoren kommen ohne aktive Lüftung aus. Das macht die Rechner quasi lautlos. Beim großen i7-Prozessor pusten unter hoher Last die Lüfter - jedoch angenehm leise. Die Lautsprecher schaffen es außerdem, die Lüftungsgeräusche gut zu übertönen.Das Surface Pro gibt es in sechs verschiedenen Ausführungen: Angefangen bei einem Intel Core m3 mit 128 Gigabyte (GB) SSD-Festplatte und 4 GB RAM für 949 Euro bis hin zur Ausstattung mit i7, 1 Terabyte (TB) Speicher und 16 GB RAM für satte 3099 Euro.


Für Tastatur und Zeichenstift werden Kunden extra zur Kasse gebeten. Der beim Vorgänger noch enthaltene Surface Pen kostet rund 110 Euro, die Tastatur rund 180 Euro. Bei letzterer hat sich auch im Design etwas getan: Sie ist mit sogenanntem Alcantara überzogen. Dieser Überzug hinterlässt schon beim Auspacken einen bleibenden Eindruck: Das wildlederartige Material hat einen stark chemischen Geruch, der auch nach einer guten Woche Nutzung noch nicht vollständig verflogen ist.

The glass panel on the bottom of the G5 15 looks great, but it gets hot when the laptop is lifting a heavy workload. Apart from that area, which reached 101 degrees Fahrenheit after we played a 15-minute, 1080p video in full-screen, the laptop remained reasonably temperate. The touchpad peaked at 84 degrees, while the center of the keyboard and bottom panel were only slightly above our 95-degree comfort threshold, at 96 degrees and 98 degrees, respectively.

The G5 15 predictably rose in temperature after we played a session of Rise of the Tomb Raider. The touchpad was a comfortable 78 degrees, while the keyboard (100 degrees) and bottom panel (108 degrees) were warm but never hot to the touch.


You won't want to use the G5 15's 720p webcam to host a stream. The image quality isn't anywhere near good enough. In fact, I've seen budget laptops with better webcams than this. My face looked grainy, and the hanging lights above my head were completely blown out in a selfie I snapped in our dimly lit office. It's not that the lens can't capture details -- I could easily make out individual strands of hair in my beard -- it's just that all the visual noise makes objects look smeared.

If you plan on downloading a bunch of games on the G5 15, then start by uninstalling the bloatware that comes preinstalled on this system. That includes some Microsoft staples, such as the Candy Crush Saga games, LinkedIn and the Solitaire Collection.


To its credit, Dell didn't put any extraneous programs on the G5 15. For gamers, the most notable addition is the Alienware Command Center, where you can launch games; monitor CPU, GPU and memory usage; and adjust the audio controls. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to test the AlienFX lighting-control system, because my specific G5 15 model didn't come with an RGB keyboard.



Other apps courtesy of Dell include Mobile Connect, which lets you connect and operate your smartphone from your laptop. You'll also find a power-management app, a cloud-storage service and a customer service program. Of course, you get Nvidia's Control Panel program, too, and a pair of Intel apps for integrated graphics controls and memory/storage management.

There's nothing better for a laptop reviewer than testing a product that improved by leaps and bounds over its predecessor. Dell clearly identified the shortcomings of the previous G5 15 and was proactive about fixing them. By far the biggest upgrade is the display, which evolved from one of the worst on a gaming laptop to one of the best of any notebook in this price range.

Additionally, the laptop's GeForce GTX 1650 graphics and 9th Gen Intel CPU offer solid performance, whether you're gaming or browsing the web, and the redesigned chassis feels premium and looks great. However, the G5 15 has a few blemishes that keep competing gaming laptops, like the Lenovo Legion Y7000, in contention. For one, the G5 15 is bulky and heavy, despite the new chassis. And the laptop's HDD+SSD combo is inexcusably sluggish, which is a turnoff to anyone who transfers large files at work.

Dell's much-needed revamp to the G5 15 gaming laptop is a huge success. The redesigned system has a much-improved 15.6-inch, 1080p display that's nearly three times more colorful than the screen on last year's model. The new design is also sure to be a crowd-pleaser, especially on our Special Edition review unit, which flaunts a clean white lid and a neat glass window on the bottom.


Also noteworthy is the G5 15's new 9th Gen Intel Core i5 CPU and GTX 1650 GPU, which both offer good, if unremarkable performance. There's still room for improvement with the G5 15; the machine remains rather large, and its storage drives are painfully slow. Despite these flaws, the G5 15 is one of the best midrange laptops for casual gamers.

Dell was gracious enough to send us the special edition (SE) version of the G5 15, which has an Alpine White lid, with a glass cutout underneath that reveals a colorful heat-management system.


The base-model G5 15 SE costs $1,044 and comes with a Core i5-9300H CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 128GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD with a 1TB SATA HDD, and an Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU (4GB of VRAM). Our $1,068 review unit had the same components but double the SSD storage.

The $1,369 version is a big jump in both price and performance. That model packs a Core i7-9750H CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD + 1TB SATA HDD, and a GTX 1660 GPU. You also get a 15.6-inch display with a 144-Hz refresh rate, up from the 60 Hz in the lower-tier models. The $1,519 high-end model ditches the 144-Hz display but comes with a Core i7-9750H CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and RTX 2060 graphics.

Not a fan of the Alpine White? Dell also offers similar configurations of the Deep Black nonspecial-edition G5 15 for less money.



Dell dialed back the "gamer" aesthetic of the previous model and gave the G5 15 a sleeker, more modern appearance.

The special edition we reviewed has the same Arctic White plastic lid we praised on the last-gen G7 15 (sadly, the 2019 version has a black-and-red color scheme), while the nonspecial edition has a Deep Space Black finish. Our unit's white lid looks clean and gives the laptop a certain allure that's missing in the overcrowded group of black-and-red laptops.


Matching the blue keyboard font and touchpad trim, a centered Dell logo on the lid shifts from indigo to chartreuse depending on how the light hits (the effect is pretty trippy). Also on the lid is a silver hinge with an embossed G5 logo.

Angled rear vents reveal stylish blue trim on the inside of this rig, while a stack of ridges wrapping around the chassis gives the G5 15 an aggressive stance when it's closed.

Unique to the special edition version of the G5 15 is a glass window on the bottom that reveals blue heat pipes and fan blades. Sure, it looks cool next to the white bottom panel, but I can't think of any good reason to look at the underside of a laptop.


That clean white finish is sadly absent on the inside of the laptop. Part of me wishes Dell had kept a consistent color scheme, while another part of me appreciates the cold, black aluminum deck, which feels more premium than what I'm used to in this price range. Dell made another major improvement in trimming down the display bezels. While not quite as narrow as those on the XPS laptops, these thin display borders keep the G5 15 relatively compact.


Still, I felt more embarrassed than I normally do when I used the G5 15 on the small table of a local Brooklyn coffee shop. That's because the G5 15 is rather bulky and heavy, measuring 1 inch thick, and weighing 5.6 pounds. Rival gaming laptops -- including the Lenovo Legion Y7000 (1.1 inches, 5.3 pounds), Acer Predator Helios 300 Special Edition (1.1 inches, 5.5 pounds) and MSI GF63 8RB (0.9 inches, 4.2 pounds) -- are about the same size but don't weigh as much.

The G5 15 has plenty of ports for connecting to monitors, docks and peripherals while charging other devices. Unfortunately, some of those ports (including the power jack) are on the back edge, which will frustrate some users.



On the right side of the G5 15, you'll find an SD card slot and a USB 3.1 port. The opposite edge houses a USB-C port alongside a second USB 3.1 port and a headphone jack. On the rear edge of the G5 15, there's an HDMI 2.0 input, a third USB 3.1 port, an RJ45 Ethernet port and a lock slot.Only the RTX 2060 model offers Thunderbolt 3 and mini Display ports, so you'll have to pay up for future-proof connectivity.


The new G5 15 SE's 15.6-inch, 1080p display is sharp, vivid and reasonably bright, which makes it a massive improvement over the previous model's disappointing screen. My review unit came with the standard 60-Hz display, but Dell also offers a 144-Hz panel that will make fast-moving objects look sharper.

The display was so detailed that I could see the tiny linkages between carburetors in a close-up shot of a Ford GT's engine in a trailer for the film Ford v Ferrari. Color also burst to life; the vinyl booths at a '60s diner shined a luscious red in the scene where Christian Bale and Matt Damon concoct their plan to take down Ferrari. Speaking of which, that iconic red finish on the Ferrari glimmered as the race car sped across my screen.

At this price, it would be very hard to find a laptop that offers longer battery life than the Inspiron 11. The notebook lasted 13 hours and 39 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test (web browsing at 100 nits), which beats the runtimes of the Ideapad 110S (7:22) and the Chromebook 11 (10:38).As with most laptops we see these days, the Inspiron 11 packs a 0.9-megapixel webcam that's barely suitable for Skype calls. So although I'm recognizable in the selfies I shot in our office, there's a lot of visual noise on the wall behind me, my skin and my sweater. Further, the red wall has too much yellow in it, and I can see blotches of dark distortion in my green sweater.


This Inspiron 11 may come in a hot shade of red, but it stays cool during use. After we streamed 15 minutes of HD video on the notebook, our heat gun picked up temperatures on its touchpad (74 degrees Fahrenheit), G and H keys (84 degrees) and underside (87.5 degrees) that all fell below our 95-degree comfort threshold.

Yes, you can get a full-fledged Windows 10 machine for $199. And although some people would argue that a similarly priced Chromebook can do just as much as this sluggish PC, Chrome OS doesn't have the full Microsoft Office suite, which schools often require.


The silver lining of the Inspiron 11's paltry 32GB of storage is that it doesn't offer enough space for Dell to load it with (much) bloatware. It does pack everything we expect to see in a Dell, including the company's Power Manager Lite battery settings utility and SupportAssist system info tool. You also get Candy Crush, Sling and Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, which you'll want to delete to reclaim the notebook's precious storage space.



The Inspiron 11 3000 comes with Dell's standard one-year limited hardware warranty, where Dell pays for shipping and the customer supplies the box. The $199 entry-level model we tested packs an Intel Celeron N3060 CPU, 2GB of RAM and a 32GB eMMC hard drive. Dell also sells the notebook with 4GB of RAM for $249.


We're astonished to see 13-plus hours of battery life from a $199 laptop, as well as audio that sounds this sweet. And while I don't love the display, it's acceptable at this price. If you can live within the limits of Chrome OS, an alternative would be the $229 Acer Chromebook 11 N7, which offers an excellent keyboard and similar performance. The Lenovo Ideapad 110S is currently on sale for $159, though it doesn't last as long on a single charge. Overall, the Dell Inspiron 11 3000 is a smart choice for users with modest demands and tight budgets.

The S15's appeal isn't skin-deep, either. With good performance, solid battery life and excellent heat management, the VivoBook S15 is a very good laptop overall, and one of the best Asus laptops. In fact, I'd wholeheartedly recommended it if not for its dull display and obnoxious amount of bloatware. Still, the VivoBook is a compelling option unlike any other on the market.

The VivoBook S15 is a beautifully crafted laptop with an exquisite design and jaw-dropping color schemes. Breaking away from the silver aluminum mold, Asus has finally given us what we've been asking for: unique color options in a nonbudget laptop.


We got our eyes on two of the VivoBook S15's five color options: star gray with yellow trim, and firmament green. The other three finishes are gunmetal, silver blue, and star gray with red trim. The green model is undoubtedly the showstopper. That particular machine has a forest-green brushed-aluminum lid and a shiny, green-plastic deck with barely visible stippled crosshatching. The chassis's turquoise trim is the bow around this beautiful package.

"Aber es bringt wieder die Frage auf, ob "Künstliche Intelligenz" tatsächlich mit menschlicher Intelligenz überhaupt vergleichbar ist oder sein kann und ob es gut ist, überhaupt von "superhuman' zu sprechen. Menschliche Intelligenz hat vielfältige Qualitäten – eben nicht nur in einer eng begrenzten Aufgabenstellung."

Unter anderem behebt der neue Patch ein Darstellungsproblem bei Windows-Mixed-Reality-Headsets und einen Fehler mit BitLocker, eine Software für Festplattenverschlüsselung für Microsoft.


Dagegen nennt Microsoft immer noch ein Startproblem mit dem neuen Sandbox-Feature. Der tritt auf, wenn Nutzer die Sprache des Systems während des Updates auf Windows 10 1903 (Mai-Update) ändern. Auch können einige Nutzer mit VPN-Verbindung immer noch eine Fehlermeldung erhalten. Dieses Problem ist seit Anfang Juli bekannt. Mehr dazu lesen Sie hier.


Knapp 80 Sicherheitslücken geschlossen

Daneben hat Microsoft mit den aktuellen Patches knapp 80 Sicherheitslücken für verschiedene Produkte geschlossen. Darunter Windows Server, Windows 8.1 aber auch verschiedene Windows-10-Versionen wie Windows 10 1803 aber auch dem aktuellen Windows 10 1903. Eine Übersicht finden Sie auf der Seite von Microsoft.


Als eine Schwachstelle für Windows 10 1903 listet Microsoft CVE-2019-0865. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Lücke in der Verschlüsselungsbibliothek SymCrypt und betrifft hauptsächlich Windows Server. Angreifer können die Lücke ausnutzen, um Windows-Systeme abzuschalten.


Besonders gefährliche Lücke dabei

"heise online" nennt als eine besonders gefährliche Lücke CVE-2019-1113. Die Schwachstelle findet sich im sogenannten Net Framework: Angreifer können mit ihrer Hilfe einen beliebigen Code auf dem Rechner ausführen und im schlimmsten Fall den Computer übernehmen.



Auch die Lücke CVE-2019-0880 wurde geschlossen. Sie wird als schwer eingestuft und wurde bereits ausgenutzt. Die Schwachstelle findet sich in der Datei splwow64.exe und erlaubt Angreifern, sich höhere Rechte zu verschaffen. Die Lücke wurde durch einen Google-Mitarbeiter entdeckt und ist Microsoft seit März bekannt. Sie hätte ursprünglich schon im Juni behoben werden sollen. Da das nicht geschah, wurde sie damals öffentlich gemacht.


Wer seinen alten Laptop oder das Smartphone weggeben will, sollte vorher alle Daten löschen. Dabei gibt es einige Regeln zu beachten – ansonsten sind die Daten immer noch abgreifbar.


Die Verwertungsgesellschaft des Bundes (Vebeg) soll nach einem Bericht der "Süddeutschen Zeitung" über Ebay einen gebrauchten Bundeswehr-Laptop verkauft haben, auf dem sich noch vertrauliche, als Verschlusssache klassifizierte Informationen befanden. Der Käufer, ein oberbayerischer Förster, habe auf dem Gerät etwa die Bedienungsanleitung für den Raketenwerfer "Mars" entdeckt und den Fund dem Verteidigungsministerium gemeldet. Anscheinend sei die Festplatte vor dem Verkauf nicht gelöscht worden .


Wer nicht möchte, dass private Daten in die Hände von Unbekannten gelangen, sollte alle Daten auf alten Notebooks richtig löschen – ehe sie verkauft oder verschenkt werden.


So löschen Sie Festplatten richtig

Klassische Festplatten (HDD) mit rotierenden Speicherscheiben lassen sich mithilfe spezieller Programme wie etwa DBAN hinreichend sicher löschen, wenn man die HDD von der Software sieben Mal überschreiben lässt, erklärt das Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI).


Anders geht man bei modernen Festplatten mit Speicherchips (SSD) und bei Festplatten vor, die beide Technologien kombinieren (SSHD). Hier sollte der sogenannte Secure-Erase-Befehl ausgeführt werden, der eine auf der Festplatte hinterlegte Löschroutine anstößt, die auch defekte Speicherbereiche einschließt. Funktioniert das Anwenden von Secure Erase mit dem Verwaltungsprogramm des Festplattenherstellers nicht, empfiehlt das BSI als Alternative etwa das Programm Parted Magic .


Was Sie bei Smartphones oder Tablets tun müssen

Und wie verfährt man mit Smartphones oder Tablets , die abgegeben werden sollen? Die Geräte auf die Werkseinstellungen zurücksetzen, genügt jedenfalls nicht, um den Speicher sicher zu löschen, warnt das BSI. Damit keine Daten wiederhergestellt werden können, sollte in den Einstellungen des Mobilgerätes – falls noch nicht geschehen – die Datenverschlüsselung aktiviert werden. Danach führt ein Zurücksetzen des Smartphones oder Tablets dazu, dass keine Daten mehr ausgelesen werden können.

TVision worked well during the time I spent with it. One annoyance, though, was that the gateway box was fairly noisy, and never seemed to completely shut off. I didn't really hear the sound—likely coming from either the fan or the DVR's hard drive—when watching TV, but it was fairly noticeable when the TV was off.

I found the interface intuitive and easy to use. The left-hand side of the home screen has video tiles showing content that's currently playing live, while the right-hand side of the screen has a list of shows that are either live, on demand, or stored on your section of the DVR. At the far right side of the screen is a list of the apps that are currently supported.


Picture quality was uniformly good, and there were only a couple of instances where the picture froze for a second or two, something that also occasionally happens with other streaming services. TVision Home supports 4K video with HDRfrom those services that offer it. (HDR can produce brighter, more vibrant images when done well.)

TVision Home offers one of the broadest assortments of channels I've seen from a streaming service. I didn't find any must-have cable channels missing, and I got all the local broadcast channels—ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, plus PBS and Telemundo.



Most people will be satisfied with the included channel selection without having to pay for any add-on packs, though die-hard sports fans and those addicted to "Game of Thrones" or "Billions" are likely exceptions.


I spent the most time using the modern-looking grid-style program guide, called Live Guide, which is arranged by channel and time slots. At the left of the grid are shortcut filters—All, For Me, News, Sports, Kids, and Movies—that tailor the programs that appear in the grid.


When you highlight a show, a box on the right provides information about the program, including the episode number, when it first aired, and a brief synopsis. Recording a show required just a button click.Like other services, TVision Home learns what you watch over time, so it can make better program suggestions.


The system is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can use voice controls to change channels or search for shows. In my brief test with an Amazon Echo, though, I found the system a bit clunky to use, since you have to tell Alexa to ask TVision to search for programs or switch channels. There is a microphone in the remote, which might make using voice control more natural, but it wasn’t active during my test.



Using the remote control was pretty intuitive; the layout is sensible, with clearly marked buttons near the top for turning the system—and your TV—on and off, accessing the program guide and DVR, and jumping backward and forward in the program guide in 12-hour increments.


Most of the operations are controlled using a large circular navigation pad at the center of the unit. Play, pause, record, and fast-forward/rewind controls are located beneath the circular pad, and above an alphanumeric keypad.One thing I didn’t like was that the remote operates using infrared, so you need a line of sight between the remote and the gateway box. In my setup, the box was slightly blocked by the end of a sound bar speaker, so I had to hold the remote high in the air to change channels. RF, or radio-frequency, remotes, like the one in my DirecTV system, don’t have to be pointed at their cable or satellite box to work.

Spätestens wenn der Akku die Warnmeldung „Jetzt austauschen“ ausgibt, besteht Handlungsbedarf. Was ist dann zu tun? Der Weg führt direkt entweder zum nächstgelegenen Apple Store oder aber zu einem Apple Service Provider (ASP) – dies sind Händler, die über eine entsprechende Zertifizierung des Herstellers verfügen und ausgebildete Techniker beschäftigen. Die Batterie wird dort fachgerecht ausgetauscht und der ältere Akku gleich umweltgerecht entsorgt. Bezüglich der Kosten gibt sich Apple transparent und ruft für die jeweiligen Modelle Pauschalpreise auf. Im Preis enthalten sind so auch sämtliche Arbeitskosten. Wieder einmal ist es der in der Regel gut informierte Mark Gurman, der für Bloomberg eine lange Übersicht der aktuellen Situation rund um den Mac und Apple im Allgemeinen zusammengestellt hat.



Gurman führte hierzu Interviews mit Personen, die über die interne Lage bei Apple informiert sein sollen. So soll es etwa Probleme beim Design des kürzlich vorgestellten MacBook Pro gegeben haben. Apples Techniker wollten ursprünglich Akkus verwenden, die sich an die Form des Gehäuses anpassen und so eine gesteigerte Kapazität bieten könnten.

Aufgrund eines Fehlers bei einem wichtigen Tests konnte Apple diese jedoch nicht wie geplant ausliefern. Um jedoch das wichtige Weihnachtsgeschäft nicht zu verpassen, entschloß man sich, eine alternative Technik zu verwenden. Das Resultat waren die mittlerweile bekannten Berichte über kurze Akkulaufzeiten, welche darin endeten, dass Apple die Anzeige der verbleibenden Laufzeit aus macOS 10.12.2 entfernt hatte.

Die Entscheidung, das Design zu ändern, bedeutete, dass andere Ingenieure für die Entwicklung umdisponiert werden mussten. Dies führte dazu, dass die Entwicklung anderer Macs darunter leiden musste.

Das Londoner Startup Arroe sammelt auf der Crowdfunding-Plattform Indiegogo Geld für seine stylische Tasche LAER. Doch sie kann deutlich mehr als nur gut auszusehen.Praktisch und gleichzeitig schick, diese beiden Produkteigenschaften passen häufig nicht zusammen. Beim Projekt der britischen Firma Arroe ist das anders: Sie präsentieren eine Tasche für Laptops, Smartphones und Tablets, die mit einem integrierten Akku alle Geräte unterwegs auflädt. Das Ende von blinkenden Akkuanzeigen und nervigen „Nur noch 10% Akku“-Hinweisen auf dem Smartphone.


Die LAER, ausgesprochen wie das englische Wort „layer“, ist aus schwarzem Nylon gefertigt und sehr schlicht gehalten. Oben befindet sich eine magnetische Schließe und unten ein hervorgehobener Kreis, der zum drahtlosen Laden des Smartphones genutzt wird. Die Tasche besteht insgesamt aus drei Lagen: der Oberseite aus Nylon, einer Polsterung in der Mitte und einer weichen Fütterung im Innern. Es wird nicht genau benannt, wie groß der Laptop sein darf, in den Produktvideos scheinen vorerst maximal 13-Zoll-Laptops Platz zu finden. Es sollen aber auch noch größere Varianten vorgestellt werden.



Den Platz im Inneren der Tasche müssen sich die Geräte mit dem integrierten Akku teilen. Er ist aber nur knapp 1 Zentimeter hoch und wiegt zwischen 200 und 350 Gramm. Zwischen zwei Varianten kann man wählen: Im Basis-Modell ist ein 5.000 mAh Akku verbaut, der ein iPhone 7 genau zweimal aufladen kann. Ein MacBook Pro 13-Zoll wird allerdings nur bis zu 30 Prozent der Kapazität aufgeladen. Wer mehr Power braucht, kann sich das Pro-Modell mit einem 20.000 mAh Akku zulegen. Damit wird das MacBook zu 120 Prozent aufgeladen und das iPhone 7 kann bis zu 8 Mal wieder vollgeladen werden. Das Besondere an den Akkus ist, dass sie sich austauschen lassen. Wenn in Zukunft noch größere Modelle vorgestellt werden, kann die Kapazität einfach aufgestockt werden.


Smartphones können auch drahtlos über den Qi-Standard geladen werden. Dazu muss es einfach an der Vorderseite auf den markierten Kreis gelegt werden. iPhone Nutzer und alle anderen, deren Smartphone kein Wireless Charging unterstützt, können eine Schutzhülle mit dieser Funktion für 10 US-Dollar gleich dazu kaufen.


Beim Kauf der Hülle wählt man aus, welches Set von Adaptern man benötigt. Just because you can do something, it doesn’t mean you should. The 2018 Acer Swift 7 proved that. It was a shockingly thin laptop at just 0.35 inches – about as thin as an iPhone — but it demanded some significant compromises. Acer wants to rectify that with the 2019 Swift 7, which isn’t quite as thin but seeks to address the previous version’s shortcomings.


We reviewed the sole configuration of the Swift 7, with a dual-core, low-power 8th-gen Intel Core i7-8500Y CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB PCIe solid-state drive (SSD), and a 14-inch Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display. The price for this configuration is $1,700, making the Swift 7 a premium laptop.


The Swift 7 lives up to its billing as an incredibly thin and light laptop, as we’ll see. But is that enough to justify its relatively high price?


A LOVELY SLIVER OF A LAPTOP

Okay, so, let’s get the superlatives out of the way: This is a spectacularly thin, compact, and light laptop. The previous version of the Swift 7 was just slightly thinner – 0.35 inches compared to 0.39 inches in the new model – but it was also larger thanks to relatively chunky bezels surrounding the 14-inch display. For 2019, Acer jumped on the tiny bezel bandwagon with both feet – the Swift 7’s 92 percent screen-to-body ratio rivals the Lenovo IdeaPad S940 and Asus ZenBook S13.


That means that the Swift 7 is as small as those two tiny-bezel class-leaders, but it’s so much thinner. The ZenBook S13 is 0.67 inches thick and the IdeaPad S940 0.55 inches. Trust us – you’ll notice just how thin the Swift 7 is the second you pick it up. As we said about the 2018 version, the Swift 7 feels like someone ripped off a normal laptop’s display and handed you back what’s left over.


The Swift 7 is also incredibly light at just 1.96 pounds. You notice that immediately as well, and it’s almost three-quarters of a pound lighter than the ZenBook S13 and the IdeaPad S940. Even the tiny Dell XPS 13 is significantly heavier at 2.7 pounds. The Swift 7’s light weight is maybe more impressive than its thinness.


So, this is a thin, small, and light laptop – among the thinnest, lightest, and smallest around. And that’s a good thing if you’re a serious road warrior and don’t want to be weighed down but still want a larger display. But are there any compromises, as there were with last year’s Swift 7?

When shopping for a laptop under $500, you don’t have a lot of control over features, but there is a minimal threshold to meet for a good experience. You could get a laptop for $200, but you shouldn’t. Here’s what to look for:Solid-state storage: I’ve found that SSD storage instead of spinning hard drives makes the biggest difference in how a laptop feels to use in everyday tasks. Launching applications and opening files is much snappier on an SSD than on a hard drive.


Seventh- or eighth-generation Intel Core i3 or i5 processor: An Intel Core i3 processor offers plenty of power for basic Web browsing, word processing, and video watching. (A Core i5 is better but rare in this price range.) You can find Pentium and Celeron processors at this price, but they’re too slow for Windows. Chromebooks can get away with a less powerful Core m3 processor.


4 GB (preferably 8 GB) of memory: A laptop with 4 GB of memory allows you to have two or three applications open at a time, but after 10 or so browser tabs it’ll slow to a crawl. A model with 8 GB is much better, but rare. Chromebooks can get away with 4 GB of memory because that operating system doesn’t require as much as Windows to run smoothly.


This leaves you with a choice between three different types of computers: a Chromebook, a Windows laptop, or a tablet.If you want something portable or durable, and you rely mostly on Google Docs for schoolwork, get a Chromebook. If you prefer Windows and don’t mind dealing with slightly sluggish performance and less durability in favor of wider software support, get a Windows laptop. If you want a light and portable device primarily for writing or for taking notes, get an iPad.



If you don’t need Windows applications or access to specialty software, buy a Chromebook. They’re better built, they have longer battery life, and they’re easier to update than their Windows-based competitors.
Chromebooks run Google’s ChromeOS, where you do everything through the Chrome Web browser. They’re most useful for students who do coursework in Google Docs or through online education portals. Chromebooks update automatically and have no bloatware or preinstalled software to remove the way Windows laptops do, which makes them much easier to use. Chromebooks can run some Android mobile apps but can’t run Windows applications, so they aren’t good for tasks that require special software, such as coding or media editing. Despite being browser based, Chromebooks do have offline support, according to Google, but they’re not as useful as a Windows computer if you don’t have an internet connection.


For under $500, Wirecutter’s pick for the best Chromebook is the Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA. Weighing less than 3 pounds, it has a 10-hour battery life, a bright touch-screen, and a backlit keyboard that’s comfortable to type on. But this model is old and won’t get software updates after 2022. If you can spend more than $500, get Wirecutter’s pick for the best Chromebook overall, the Asus Chromebook Flip C434TA, which has a larger screen and a newer processor and is often on sale for around $530. The C434TA is a classy laptop and could be mistaken for a high-end Windows computer at a glance. Both Chromebooks are fine options for high school and college students who work in Google Docs and are rarely without an internet connection.


If you’re shopping for younger students in elementary or middle school, I’d go with Wirecutter’s budget Chromebook pick, the Acer C771T, which has a slower processor but also offers a durable case made to withstand a beating. I’ve seen this laptop continue to work even after a kid dunked a full glass of water on it.



For $500 you can’t get a Windows laptop that can multitask that well or run memory-heavy programs, but you can get one that feels snappy enough for browsing the Web, running lightweight productivity software, and watching movies. A cheap Windows laptop can do what a Chromebook can, but it’s also likely saddled with bloatware, worse battery life, slow performance with lots of tabs open, and a cheaper-feeling case. The main reason to get one over a Chromebook is if you need to run Windows software.


The best option I’ve found is the Asus VivoBook Flip 14 TP412FA. Its 128 GB of SSD storage is plenty for most people, and the Core i3 processor is fast enough. Its biggest problem is its measly 4 GB of memory, which causes it to slow down if you run more than three applications at once or open about 10 tabs in a browser. Otherwise, the VivoBook Flip’s touch-screen is vibrant (albeit a bit too reflective for outdoor use), and the keyboard is comfortable and backlit. And although I had issues with the trackpad not always registering movement, it’s still better than most options in this price range. The battery was underwhelming in my tests, lasting less than five hours. That won’t get you through a day of school without having to find a plug to charge.

Das Honor Note 10 ist da, wenn auch zunächst nur für den chinesischen Markt. Es handelt sich um ein Gerät der Superlative. Das 6,95-Zoll-Display ist da nur der Anfang. Kommt es auch nach Deutschland?



Honor, die Tochtermarke von Huawei, hat jetzt das Note 10 vorgestellt. Wie zuvor bereits berichtet, kann das Smartphone auf ein besonders großes Display verweisen – und der Rest der Hardware braucht sich ebenfalls nicht zu verstecken. Gerade der starke Akku dürfte manchen Interessenten überzeugen.

Beim Honor Note 10 hat der Konzern weder Kosten noch Mühen gescheut. Das AMOLED-Display im Format von 18,5:9 kommt auf die besagte Diagonale von 6,95 Zoll und löst mit 2.220 x 1.080 Bildpunkten auf. Das Verhältnis von Display zu Gehäuse liegt bei sehr ordentlichen 81,5 Prozent. Auf einen Notch oder dicke Seitenränder hat der Hersteller verzichtet. Leider auch auf einen klassischen Kopfhöreranschluss im 3,5-mm-Format. Ein Adapter liegt aber mit im Paket.


Wieder einmal kommt der hauseigene Kirin 970 zum Einsatz. Den Prozessor kennen wir schon unter anderem vom Honor 10 und der Mate-10-Reihe von Huawei. Unterstützung gibt es von je nach Modell 6 GB oder sogar 8 GB Arbeitsspeicher. Beim Festspeicher haben Kunden die Wahl zwischen 64 GB und 128 GB. Android 8.1 Oreo mit Huaweis Benutzeroberfläche EMUI 8.2 ist vorinstalliert. Um für genügend Power zu sorgen, hat Honor einen Akku mit einer satten Leistung von 5.000 mAh verbaut. Durch USB Type-C und einen Schnelllademodus dürfte das Gerät schnell wieder auf den Beinen stehen. Mit 230 Gramm Gewicht ist das Note 10 aber alles andere als ein Leichtgewicht.


Damit das Gerät kühl genug bleibt, hat der Hersteller eine Flüssigkühlung integriert. Diese soll unter Volllast für 10 Grad Celsius weniger sorgen. Neben dem „GPU-Turbo“ für mehr Grafikleistung hat Honor jetzt auch einen „CPU-Turbo“ integriert. Die softwareseitige Lösung soll eine noch bessere Performance ermöglichen. Beide Turbos lassen sich mit einem physischen Button am Gerät einschalten.



Die Dual-Kamera auf der Rückseite des Honor Note 10 kann Fotos mit 24 MP beziehungsweise 16 MP (beide f/1.8) erstellen. Hinzu kommt noch eine Frontkamera mit 13 MP und einem Blendenwert von f/2.0. Verschiedene KI-Funktionen sorgen dafür, dass das zu fotografierende Objekt im Idealfall erkannt wird und entsprechende Einstellungen automatisch vorgenommen werden.


Honor hat das Note 10 jetzt in China in den Farben Midnight Black und Phantom Blue vorgestellt. Die Preise liegen dort je nach Ausstattung zwischen 350 und 450 Euro. Sollte das Smartphone auch in Deutschland an den Start gehen, ist allerdings mit höheren Preisen zu rechnen. Honor hat noch nicht verkündet, ob das Gerät auch außerhalb Chinas in den Verkauf gehen wird. Es ist aber gut möglich, dass der Konzern das Note 10 im Rahmen der IFA (31. August bis 5. September) im Gepäck hat.

Once upon a time, every laptop had a battery that was easily removable. Users did not have to open up the chassis of their laptop or use any tools, the battery could simply be removed by pulling a little lock. This was useful, as batteries do lose their capacity over time. Also, it enabled users to take a spare battery with them on the go, which was often one of the only ways to work for longer periods on the go in an age where most laptops had a battery run-time of 5 hours at best. Some laptops were also offered with different larger external batteries, which stuck out of the chassis but provided better a better battery life.


Today, most laptops have internal batteries, which means they are only removable by opening up the laptop and removing the screws that hold these internal batteries in place. In some cases, the batteries are even glued-in and thus pretty much non-removable. A prime example for this are the more recent generation of Macbook Pro devices. A non-removable battery can have serious consequences for the longevity of a device, which is not the case with the internal-but-still-removable batteries. Still, extended batteries does become impossible and taking along spares does as well.


One of the last mainstream laptop manufacturers to offer models with external batteries was Lenovo. Last years ThinkPad T480 had the so called "PowerBridge" system. It featured a small internal battery as well as second external battery, which could optionally swapped for an expanded 72 Wh option, giving this compact 14 inch system a massive maximum battery capacity of 95 Wh. Another model with an external battery was the mobile workstation ThinkPad P52. This thick 15.6 inch workstation had a 90 Wh external battery.



This years Lenovo ThinkPad T490 comes with a single internal 50 Wh battery, while the new Lenovo ThinkPad P53 will feature a single internal 90 Wh battery. This has now led to some online outrage by ThinkPad fans and recently, a Youtuber has joined the disappointed voices: Louis Rossmann created a Youtube channel focused mostly on motherboard repairs performed in his own repair shop and he owns and uses a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop. His channel apparently also became popular because of his frequent videos on Apple as well as his fight for a "right to repair" legislation.


In a new video (which we linked below), he compares the spec-sheets of the ThinkPad P52 with its successor ThinkPad P53 and he voices his disappointment with the new model, which he wouldn't buy. According to Rossmann, having the battery internal does not bring any advantage to the user, as Lenovo did not use this opportunity to put in a larger battery, unlike Apple in 2009 when it released the first Macbook Pro with an internal battery. Also, he claims that the chassis of the ThinkPad P53 is thicker than the P52, though according to our information this appears to be incorrect – both the P52 and P53 seem to have an identical thickness of roughly 24 to 28 mm.


This video was also posted on the subreddit /r/thinkpad/ and its discussion thread has received over 230 comments, many voicing discontent with Lenovo's decision. Of course, we are interested in what our readers think as well – should the battery still be external, which allows hot-swap capabilities and easier maintenance, or are internal batteries the way to go, since they allow thinner designs?
