Bakery boss released early after fraud conviction

Tasmania's Corrective Services director, Robert Williams, will not say why convicted tax fraudster Mark Saxby was released from jail three months early.

Saxby, the Banjos Bakery founder, was sentenced to a minimum 12 months last May for defrauding the Commonwealth of $300,000, but was freed last week.

Mr Williams declined to talk about the particular case but said in general inmates are granted remission for good behaviour.

"Each case is assessed on its merits," he said.

"We look at things like their general good conduct, whether they've been involved in industries within the prison and whether they've participated (cliquez ici pour suivre le lien)">golden goose outlet in various treatment programs we have."

Mr Williams says early release is a regular occurrence.

"But one of the points I would make is that it is also refused on a regular basis," he said.

"People who have not behaved well don't receive remission and it's a very important tool that's used across prisons worldwide as part of a management approach to ensure good behaviour and the prison runs in an orderly fashion."
