Über den hauseigenen Online-Shop vMall kann das Android 5.0 Gerät nur am Mittwoch, den 28. Oktober 2015 für 299 Euro erworben werden. Das liegt 50 Euro unter der aktuellen Preisempfehlung des Herstellers und ist gerade im Hinblick auf die zuletzt rapide ansteigenden Euro-Preise für vergleichbare Smartphones auf jeden Fall einen Blick wert.Zusätzlich zu Lumia 550, Lumia 950 und Lumia 950XL könnte Microsoft in nicht allzu ferner Zukunft ein viertes neues Windows 10 Mobile Smartphone auf den Markt bringen. Das jedenfalls legt jetzt ein von WinBeta veröffentlichtes Pressebild nahe. Den Angaben der Webseite nach ist darauf das Lumia 650 zu sehen, bei dem es sich um ein Mittelklasse-Smartphone handeln sollte. Technische Details oder gar ein Termin für den Marktstart liegen allerdings noch nicht vor.Microsoft hat auf einem großen Event Anfang Oktober bekanntlich eine neue Smartphone-Line-up mit Windows 10 Mobile präsentiert, die in den USA ab November erhältlich sein soll. Auffällig war aber, dass sich unter den Neuvorstellungen kein typisches Mittelklasse-Gerät findet. Sowohl beim Lumia 950 als auch beim Lumia 950 XL handelt es sich um ein echtes High-End-Modell, das Lumia 550 hingegen ist ein Budget-Smartphone. Lange wird die Mittelklasse allerdings offenbar nicht unbesetzt bleiben im neuen Lumia-Portfolio. Zumindest hat WinBeta jüngst ein offiziell wirkendes Presse-Bild von einem vierten, bislang unbekannten Modell veröffentlicht, das als Lumia 650 auf den Markt kommen könnte.

Lumia 950 & 950 XL: Microsofts neue Flaggschiff-Smartphones mit Windows 10
Den Angaben von WinBeta nach trägt das Smartphone auf dem durchgesickerten Foto bei Microsoft intern den Codenamen „Saana“. Auf die offizielle Bezeichnung Lumia 650 deutet die Uhrzeit (6:50) in der rechten oberen Bildschirmecke hin. Auf den Pressefotos des Lumia 950 und des Lumia 550 ist es jedenfalls so, dass dargestellte Uhrzeit auch der Modellnummer entspricht.Abgesehen von diesen Hinweisen auf die offizielle Bezeichnung, den Codenamen Saana und das Foto gibt es bislang leider noch keine genaueren Informationen zu dem mysteriösen Lumia-Smartphone. Es muss also erst mal abgewartet werden bis hoffentlich bald neue Details und erste Hinweise auf einen möglichen Veröffentlichungstermin auftauchen. Wir sind jedenfalls gespannt, ob wir hier den ersten Blick auf einen würdigen Nachfolger für das Lumia 640 werfen konnten. Dieses im Frühjahr 2015 vorgestellte Windows Phone 8.1 Gerät verfügt über ein 5 Zoll großes HD-Display, einen Quad-Core-Prozessor vom Typ Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 und 1 Gigabyte RAM.

Apple hat vergangene Nacht neben iOS 9.1 auch Updates für zwei weitere seiner Software-Plattformen veröffentlicht. Sowohl OS X 10.11.1 für Macs als auch watchOS 2.0.1 für die Apple Watch bringt diverse Fehlerkorrekturen mit.Das erste größere Update für das seit 30. September erhältliche OS X 10.11 El Capitan kann von Mac-Nutzern wie gewohnt über den Mac App Store heruntergeladen werden. Es beinhaltet laut Apple Anpassungen, die die Stabilität, Kompatibilität und Sicherheit des Betriebssystems verbessern. Des Weiteren werden genau wie in iOS 9.1 über 150 neue Emoji mitgeliefert.Die erste Aktualisierung für watchOS 2 kommt wie eingangs erwähnt mit mehreren Bugfixes daher, das Wichtigste dürfte für Nutzer der Apple Watch aber sein, dass mit watchOS 2.0.1 die sporadisch auftretenden Probleme mit der Akkulaufzeit vorbei sein sollten.

Wie bei der Apple Watch üblich, kann der Download von watchOS 2.0.1 über die Apple Watch App auf einem iPhone initiiert werden. Das Update ist rund 63 Megabyte groß. Analog zu OS X 10.11.1 und iOS 9.1 beinhaltet es auch Unterstützung für über 150 neue Emoji.Darüber hinaus gibt Apple in den Release Noteszu watchOS 2.0.1 unter anderem diese spezifischen Änderungen an:Microsoft ist derzeit dabei, die Arbeiten am ersten großen Update für Windows 10, Codename Threshold 2, abzuschließen. Laut dem stets in Sachen Microsoft gut informierten Paul Thurrott wird der Redmonder Softwareriese die fertige Aktualisierung ab Anfang November 2015 an Windows 10 Nutzer ausliefern.Anders als die derzeit für Teilnehmer am Windows 10 Insider Programm erhältlichen Vorschauversionen wird das sogenannte „Windows 10 November 2015 Update“ den Informationen von Thurrott nach nicht all vollständig neuer Build ausgerollt werden, sondern ganz klassisch als kumulatives Aktualisierungspaket. Allerdings soll sich Windows 10 inklusive des Herbst-Updates dann mit der neuen Versionsnummer 1511 zu erkennen geben, um eine deutliche Unterscheidung zur ursprünglichen RTM-Version vom vergangenen Juli zuzulassen.

Die Installation des großen Updates soll auf Windows 10 Geräten wie die anderer Aktualisierungen oder Sicherheitspatches in gewohnter Weise über Windows Update im Hintergrund erfolgen. Wer in Zukunft einen PC mit Windows 7 oder 8.1 auf Windows 10 upgraden will, der wird laut Thurrott gleich die neue Version 1511 des Betriebssystems erhalten.Wie bereits in der jüngsten Insider Preview zu sehen ist, wird das Herbst-Update Änderungen für den Aktivierungsprozess von Windows 10 mitbringen. Unter anderem kann Windows 10 künftig auch mit einem gültigen Produktschlüssel für Windows 7, 8 oder 8.1 aktiviert werden. Bislang war es so, dass Windows 10 die Aktivierung entweder automatisch beim Upgrade von Windows 7/8.1 aus vornahm oder diese ausschließlich mit einem neuen Windows 10 Key durchgeführt werden konnte. Nutzer mit gültiger Windows 7/8 Lizenz, bei denen die automatische Aktivierung fehlschlug, standen daher vor einem Problem.

Zu den weiteren Neuerungen zählen eine Reihe von Verbesserungen für die Benutzeroberfläche, die wohl eigentlich schon in der RTM-Fassung von Windows 10 hätten enthalten sein sollen. Dazu zählen unter anderem farbige Titelleisten für Desktop-Anwendungen, überarbeitete Kontextmenüs und eine zusätzliche Spalte für die Live Tiles im Startmenü. Davon abgesehen wird Microsoft mit dem Update eine neue Nachrichten und Skype Video App ausliefern, die die Messaging-Plattform Skype tief ins System integrieren.Schließlich wird das Herbst-Update für Windows 10 auch etwas Feintuning für den noch sehr jungen Browser Edge sowie Verbesserungen für den digitalen Assistenten Cortana beinhalten. Mit Hilfe von Cortana können demnächst beispielsweise auch SMS von einem Windows 10 PC aus verschickt werden, vorausgesetzt der Nutzer ist sowohl auf dem Rechner als auch auf einem Windows 10 Mobile Smartphone mit demselben Microsoft-Konto angemeldet. Was im Übrigen auch das November-Update nicht liefern wird, ist die von Microsoft versprochene Unterstützung für Erweiterungen in Edge. Dieses Feature soll jetzt erst im nächsten Jahr nachgereicht werden.

Von den Neuerungen der aktuellen Windows 10 Insider Preview werden sich schon bald alle Windows 10 Nutzer einen Eindruck machen können. Wie ein US-Publizist mit besten Kontakten in Microsoft-Kreise verrät, wird der Redmoner Softwareriese Anfang November ein großes Herbst-Update für das im vergangenen Juli erschienene PC-Betriebssystem veröffentlichen. Dieses soll unter anderem Verbesserungen für die Benutzeroberfläche und den Browser Edge mitbringen.Es ist derzeit noch nicht bekannt, wann Microsoft plant, sein Anfang Oktober angekündigtes Surface Book in Deutschland auf den Markt zu bringen. Da das innovative Convertible-Notebook aber in wenigen Tagen in den USA erhältlich sein wird und die US-Presse bereits Testexemplare zur Verfügung gestellt bekommen hat, gibt es von dort nun neue Erkenntnisse zu den technischen Spezifikationen. Die diskrete Grafikeinheit des Surface Book gab zunächst einige Rätsel auf. Microsoft sprach bei der offiziellen Enthüllung des 2-in-1-Laptops lediglich von einer Nvidia-GPU mit GDDR5-VRAM. Die bei PC-Enthusiasten bestens bekannte US-Publikation Anandtech hat nun aber mit Hilfe eines Testgeräts und dem bekannten Tool GPU-Z die wichtigsten Einzelheiten über den Grafikchip in Erfahrung bringen können. Es handelt sich dabei um eine GPU mit Maxwell-Architektur vom Typ GM108, deren Spezifikationen im Grunde einer GeForce 940M entsprechen. Wie auf dem GPU-Z-Screenshot von Anandtech klar zu sehen ist, besitzt der Chip 384 Rechenkerne, die mit einer Taktfrequenz von 954 bis 993 Megahertz arbeiten, und ist über ein 64 Bit breites Speicherinterface an ein Gigabyte GDDR5-RAM angebunden. Die Art des verwendeten Speichers ist auch der einzige nennenswerte Unterschied zwischen der speziellen Surface Book GPU und einer normalen GeForce 940M, da letztgenannte von Nvidia ausschließlich mit 2 Gigabyte DDR3-RAM ausgeliefert wird.

Aufgrund des schnelleren GDDR5-Speichers verfügt die dedizierte Grafikeinheit des Surface Book über eine höhere Datentransferrate als eine Standard-940M, was die Spezialanfertigung auch ein gutes Stück flotter machen sollte. Aufgrund Microsofts Entscheidung für nur 1 Gigabyte VRAM bleibt aber abzuwarten, wie gut die Performance im Alltagseinsatz tatsächlich ist. Anandtechs erste Benchmark sind diesbezüglich schon mal vielversprechend, wenn auch nicht so spektakulär wie das Microsofts Präsentation suggerierte. Ein waschechtes Gaming-Notebook im äußerst kompakten Gehäuse darf im Surface Book somit selbstverständlich nicht gesehen werden.Der besagten Nvidia-Grafikeinheit steht in den teureren Modellvarianten des Surface Book ein Intel Core i5 oder Core i7 Prozessor der 6. Generation (Skylake) mit einer TDP von 15 Watt zur Seite. Die Grundkonfiguration gibt es auch ohne dediziertem Grafikchip. Darüber hinaus bietet das Convertible bis zu 16 Gigabyte RAM und eine schnelle PCIe-SSD mit Kapazitäten von bis zu 1 Terabyte.

Apple hat heute Abend iOS 9.1 zum Download freigegeben. Es ist das erste große Update für das im September veröffentlichte iOS 9 und insgesamt die dritte Aktualisierung. Eine Beta von iOS 9.1 konnte von Entwicklern und freiwilligen Testern seit mehr als einem Monat ausprobiert werden. Zu den Neuerungen zählen einige Fehlerbehebungen, Performance-Optimierungen und Verbesserungen sowie die Unterstützung für kommende Apple-Hardware.iOS 9.1 wird von Apple ab sofort als sogenannte OTA-Update drahtlos verteilt, kann aber auch über iTunes auf einem Mac oder PC heruntergeladen werden. Unterstützt werden alle iPhone, iPad und iPod touch Modelle, auf denen auch iOS 9 läuft.Die deutlich ersichtlichen Änderungen von iOS 9.1 halten sich in Grenzen. Unter anderem hat Apple seinem aktuellen Betriebssystem Unterstützung für Unicode 7 und 8 spendiert und damit auch gleich eine Reihe neuer Emoji hinzugefügt. In den Einstellungen findet sich nun außerdem die Option, die Darstellung von Kontaktfotos in der Nachrichten-App abzuschalten.Eine weitere von Apple beworbene Neuerungen von iOS 9.1 betrifft speziell die neuen iPhone-Modelle iPhone 6s und iPhone 6s Plus. Beim Aufnehmen von Live Fotos erkennt die Kamera-Software jetzt automatisch, wenn das Gerät angehoben oder gesenkt wird und zeichnet diese Bewegungen nicht länger auf.

Dell hat neue Tablet-PCs mit Windows 10 vorgestellt, die für den Einsatz vom Einzelhandel, über das Bildungswesen bis hin zur Gastronomie prädestiniert sein sollen. Sowohl das Dell Venue 8 Pro der 5000er-Serie als auch das Dell Venue 10 Pro der 5000er-Serie bieten dazu gute Leistung im kompakten Format.Das Dell Venue 8 Pro der 5000er-Serie wartet mit einem dünnen und leichten Chassis auf und kann von Kunden entweder mit einem 8 Zoll HD (1280 x 800) oder Full HD (1920 x 1200) Touchscreen geordert werden. Das Dell Venue 10 Pro der 5000er-Serie besitzt ein 10,1 Zoll großes Full HD (1920 x 1200) Display. Beide Tablets lassen sich dank passendem Tastatur-Dock problemlos auch als Notebook verwenden.Dell zählt zu den Zielgruppen seiner neuen Tablet-PCs neben den eingangs erwähnten Bereichen auch das Gesundheitswesen oder Außendienstmitarbeiter. Für den Einsatz im Geschäftsumfeld bringen die Geräte beispielsweise Data-Protection-Lösungen von Dell mit, die zur Datenverschlüsselung und fortschrittlichen Benutzer-Authentifizierung eingesetzt werden können.

Beide neuen Venue-Tablets werden von einem Atom-Prozessoren von Intel angetrieben und mit vorinstalliertem Windows 10 ausgeliefert. Darüber hinaus verfügen sie über einen eingebauten Digitizer, durch den bei Bedarf auch die Nutzung eines Wacom-Stylus möglich ist.Dell will das Venue 8 Pro und das Venue 10 Pro der 5000er-Serie im Laufe des November 2015 auf den Markt bringen. Detaillierte Angaben zur Ausstattung der Geräte sowie zu den Euro-Preisen hat das Unternehmen bislang noch nicht gemacht. Relevant ist Nachricht zu iOS 9.0.1 speziell für iPhone 6s und 6s Plus vor allem deshalb, weil Kunden, die morgen oder in den nächsten Tagen eines der neuen Apple-Smartphones erhalten, erst einmal auf die neue iOS-Version aktualisieren müssen. Es darf davon ausgegangen werden, dass Apple die beiden Modelle mit iOS 9.0 vorinstalliert ausliefert.Wie gestern schon berichtet, handelt es sich bei iOS 9.0.1 im Grunde nur um ein Mini-Update, aber es behebt ein paar ärgerliche Fehler, die seit der Veröffentlichung von iOS 9 vor gut einer Woche ans Licht kamen. Dazu gehört auch ein Problem, durch das einige Nutzer ihr Gerät nicht erfolgreich auf iOS 9 aktualisieren konnten, weil der Setup-Assistent nicht mehr auf Eingaben reagierte.In Neuseeland hat Apple bereits den Verkauf von iPhone 6s und 6s Plus gestartet. In Deutschland werden Apple Stores am Freitagmorgen um 08:00 Uhr für die Kunden öffnen. Vorbestellungen sollten hierzulande ebenfalls im Laufe des morgigen Tages zugestellt werden.

Microsoft hat in dieser Woche nun auch Office 2016 für Windows veröffentlicht. Das neue Office-Paket setzt den Fokus auf Kollaborationsfunktionen sowie weitreichende Cloud-Anbindung und soll dadurch unter anderem Firmen davon abbringen, auf vergleichbare Angebote von Google zu setzen.Wie sich schon anhand der Preview-Fassung (Beta) von Office 2016 abzeichnete ist die neue Office Suite der alten (Office 2013) auf den ersten Blick sehr ähnlich. Microsoft hat das Oberflächen-Design von Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook und Co. nur dezent verändert. So lassen sich nun beispielsweise für Statusleisten und Ribbons unterschiedlichen Farben festlegen und via Teilen-Schaltfläche kann kann ein Dokument schnell per E-Mail versandt oder zum gemeinsamen Bearbeiten für Kollegen freigegeben werden.
Outlook 2016 profitiert von einem neuen Feature namens Clutter". Dabei handelt es sich um ein System, das über maschinelles Lernen im Laufe der Zeit erkennt, welche Mails für den Anwender besonders wichtig sind und diese dann hervorhebt. Die weniger wichtigen Nachrichten werden in einem separaten Ordner gesammelt. Außerdem kann Outlook jetzt auf Office365-Gruppen zugreifen.

Als Einzellizenz kostet die Version Office Home & Student 2016 149 Euro, die Version Office Home & Business 2016 279 Euro und die Ausgabe Office Professional 2016 539 Euro. Dabei ist zu beachten, dass die Lizenzen wirklich nur für ein Gerät gelten, sie also nicht auf einem Desktop-PC und zugleich auf einem Notebook eingesetzt werden können.An den Abo-Preisen ändert sich für Office-365-Kunden glücklicherweise mit Einführung des neuen Office-Pakets nicht. Office 365 Home kostet also weiterhin 99 Euro pro Jahr oder 10 Euro pro Monat und beinhaltet Lizenzen für fünf PCs oder Macs, fünf Tablets und Smartphones mit iOS, Android oder Windows 10 sowie 1 Terabyte OneDrive-Speicher. Für Office 365 Personal, das die Verwendung der Office-Programme auf einem PC oder Mac, einem Tablet und einem Smartphone gestattet und ebenfalls inklusive 1 Terabyte Online-Speicher daherkommt, verlangt Microsoft wie gehabt 69 Euro pro Jahr oder 7 Euro pro Monat.

Ein neuer Tag, neue Lecks im Umfeld der Smartphone-Hersteller: Nach all den Fotos der neuen Nexus-Smartphones ist heute mal wieder das taiwanische Unternehmen HTC an der Reihe. Der bekannte Brachen-Insider Evan Blass hat auf Twitter ein Pressefoto veröffentlicht, auf dem ein Smartphone mit dem Codenamen Aero von allen Seiten zu sehen ist. Dieses Modell sollte demnächst als HTC One A9 auf den Markt kommen. Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass Bildmaterial zu dem Gerät durchsickert, allerdings ist das Aero nun erstmals in unterschiedlichen Farbvarianten zu sehen.
Sollte das geleakte Foto das One M9 tatsächlich so zeigen, wie es auch in den Handel kommen wird, so dürften die Vergleiche mit dem iPhone 6 beziehungsweise 6s auf absehbare Zeit nicht verstummen. Das HTC-Smartphone wird offenbar sogar auch in sehr ähnlichen Farbvarianten erhältlich sein. Neben den vom iPhone 6s her bekannten Farbtönen Grau, Gold, Silber und Rosé Gold sollen allerdings noch Dunkelgrau/Schwarz und Violett hinzukommen.

HTCs Chefin Cher Wang hatte bereits vor ein paar Monaten kämpferisch angekündigt, dass es in diesem Jahr noch ein neues HTC-Flaggschiff geben wird. Damit will der krisengebeutelten Smartphone-Hersteller einen seit mehreren Jahren zu beobachtenden Negativtrend stoppen, während dem die One-Reihe zwar meist gut bei Tests weggekommen ist, aber im Konkurrenzkampf mit Apples und Samsungs Geräten sowie den Angeboten von aufstrebenden chinesischen Unternehmen dennoch stets das Nachsehen hatte. Das neue Topmodell, das dem im Frühjahr 2015 vorgestellten One M9 nachfolgen soll, wird also offenbar das besagte One A9 sein.Ob das One A9 die erhoffte Trendwende für HTC bringen kann, muss die Zukunft zeigen. Die Taiwaner scheinen sich dafür nach allem was wir bislang wissen auf eine Kombination aus eindeutig von Apple inspiriertem Design und relativ erschwinglicher Hardware der gehobenen Mittelklasse zu verlassen. Gemäß durchgesickerter Details wird das One A9 ein rund 7 Millimeter dickes Metallgehäuse und ein 5 Zoll großes Full-HD-Display bieten. Des Weiteren sollen der Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 Prozessor, eine 13 Megapixel Kamera auf der Rückseite, eine 4-UltraPixel-Frontkamera, 2 Gigabyte RAM, 16 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher, ein microSD-Kartenslot und ein 2150-mAh-Akku sowie ein Fingerabdrucksensor zur Ausstattung gehören.

Die Webseite Android Police hat mittlerweile noch einmal nachgelegt und weitere Pressefotos veröffentlicht. Dabei ist nun auch das Nexus 5X in voller Pracht sowie in mehreren Farben zu sehen und vom Nexus 6P gibt es ebenfalls einen ersten Blick auf die unterschiedlichen Farbvarianten, die für Käufer zur Auswahl stehen werden.
Wie es sich schon anhand der gestern kurzzeitig bei Amazon Indien aufrufbaren Einträge abzeichnete, wird es das Nexus 5X in den Farben Eisblau, Schwarz und Weiß zu kaufen geben. Ansonsten lässt sich festhalten, dass sich Nexus 5X und 6P von vorne betrachtet sehr ähnlich sehen. Bei beiden Modellen finden sich ober- und unterhalb des Displays feine Lochmuster, unter denen sich die Front-Lautsprecher befinden könnten. Der Fingerabdrucksensor sitzt auch beim Nexus 5X auf der Rückseite und direkt darüber das Kameramodul, dessen Einfassung sich leicht von der Oberfläche abhebt.

Google wird in der kommenden Woche eine Veranstaltung in San Francisco abhalten und dort - gemäß zahlloser Leaks in den vergangenen Monaten - gleich zwei neue Nexus-Smartphones enthüllen. In den letzten Stunden sind passend dazu gleich mehrere Medienberichte erschienen, die zusammengenommen nun so gut wie alle offenen Fragen zu den kommenden Modellen beantworten dürften. So hat Android Police sowohl Bilder von der Verpackung beider Geräte veröffentlicht, die die zuvor schon im Netz kursierenden Namen Nexus 5X und Nexus 6P bestätigen, als auch ein erstes offiziell wirkendes Pressefoto des neuen Nexus-Smartphones von Huawei (Nexus 6P). Des Weiteren haben kurzzeitig bei Amazon Indien gelistete Einträge die Spezifikationen des neuen Nexus-Smartphones von LG (Nexus 5X) preisgegeben.

Werfen wir zuerst einen Blick auf die Verpackungen der demnächst erscheinenden Nexus-Smartphones. Google verwendet erwartungsgemäß in beiden Fällen dieselbe, von Androids Material-Look inspirierte Design-Sprache und setzt auf eine überwiegend weiße oder graue Box, die durch ein angedeutetes "X" beziehungsweise "P" den jeweiligen Inhalt signalisiert. Außerdem sind auf beiden abfotografierten Schachteln der Schriftzug Nexus und die Bezeichnung 5X respektive 6P sowie die Beschreibung 32 Gigabyte (interner Speicher) zu erkennen.

Das Huawei Nexus 6P konnte in der Vergangenheit bereits auf diversen Schnappschüssen betrachtet werden, nun hat Android Police aber ein erstes hochauflösendes Pressebild des Smartphones in die Finger bekommen. Das Aussehen des Geräts ist klar von dem vorheriger Nexus-Generationen inspiriert, wirkt allerdings relativ unattraktiv. Eine gewichtige Rolle dabei spielt vermutlich das ungewöhnlich markante Kamera-Modul auf der Rückseite mit Dual-LED-Blitz. Ansonsten lässt sich auf dem Bild noch das 5,7 Zoll große QHD-Display und ein Fingerabdrucksensor (Rückseite) erkennen. Zu den weiteren technischen Daten des Smartphones gehören höchstwahrscheinlich ein Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 Chipsatz plus 3 Gigabyte RAM, eine 8 Megapixel Frontkamera und 32, 64 oder sogar 128 Gigabyte interner Flash-Speicher.

Apple liefert aktuell iOS 9.3.1 für kompatible iPhone-, iPad- und iPod touch-Modelle aus. Das neueste iOS-Update kommt also nur gut eine Woche nach der Veröffentlichung von iOS 9.3 am 21. März 2016 daher, was in erster Linie auf einen Fehler in iOS zurückzuführen ist, der es zuletzt für viele Nutzer unmöglich machte, Web-Links in Safari und anderen Apps zu öffnen.iOS 9.3.1 wird von Apple für alle iOS 9 Nutzer als "Over the Air"-Update verteilt, kann alternativ aber natürlich auch wie gewohnt über iTunes heruntergeladen und installiert werden. Insgesamt betrachtet stellt iOS 9.3.1 die nunmehr siebte Aktualisierung für iOS 9 dar, das rechtzeitig zum Marktstart des iPhone 6s und des iPhone 6s Plus im September 2015 fertiggestellt worden war.Der wichtigste Fix, den Apple in iOS 9.3.1 implementiert hat, widmet sich dem seit einigen Tagen heiß diskutierten Link-Problem. Kurz nach der Veröffentlichung von iOS 9.3 waren mehr und mehr Nutzerberichte aufgetaucht, aus denen hervorging, dass auf vielen iOS-Geräten keine Web-Links mehr geöffnet werden können. Unter anderem in Apples eigenen Apps wie Mail oder Safari, aber auch in Google Chrome konnte es beim Anwählen eines Links zum Programmabsturz kommen. Laut MacRumors stellte sich allerdings jüngst heraus, dass zwar die meisten Betroffenen wohlmit iOS 9.3 unterwegs sind, das Problem aber auch für einige Nutzer mit einer früheren iOS-Versionen aufgetreten ist.

Nach der Veröffentlichung von iOS 9.3.1 ist aktuell noch immer nicht ganz klar was der Grund für die Probleme beim Öffnen von Links in iOS 9.3 (und früher) ist. Der Meinung von Experten nach sollen einige Apps nicht mit der Verwaltung sogenannter Universal Links in iOS 9 zurecht gekommen sein. Ob Apple das Problem nun wirklich für alle Nutzer vollständig und nachhaltig beheben konnte, werden die nächsten Tage - vielleicht auch Wochen - zeigen müssen. Abgesehen von der beschriebenen Fehlerkorrektur ist derzeit nichts über weitere Änderungen von iOS 9.3.1 bekannt.Nach der Ankündigung des Anniversary Updates für Windows 10 am gestrigen Abend hat Microsoft nun auch eine neue Windows Insider Preview für Tester im Slow Ring veröffentlicht. Die Vorschauversion mit der Build-Nummer 14295 ist sowohl für PCs als auch Smartphones erhältlich und gibt einen kleinen Ausblick auf einige der Neuerungen, die im kommenden Sommer alle Windows 10 Nutzer erhalten werden.

Microsoft hat im Zuge seiner aktuell stattfindenden Entwicklerkonferenz Build 2016 eine neue Insider Preview von Windows 10 für Tester im Slow Ring veröffentlicht. Die Vorschauversion trägt die Build-Nummer 14295 und ist sowohl für PCs als auch Smartphones erhältlich.Um Missverständnisse zu vermeiden, ist erwähnenswert, dass Build 14295 bereits vor einigen Tagen für Windows Insider im Fast Ring bereitgestellt wurde. Die Veröffentlichung der Version für Insider im Slow Ring markiert nun aber das erste Mal, dass sich auch diese Nutzergruppe einen Eindruck vom neuen Redstone-Entwicklungszweig machen kann. Redstone ist der von Microsoft intern verwendete Codename für das nächste große Windows 10 Feature-Update, das - wie wir seit gestern Abend wissen - ab Sommer 2016 als Anniversary Update für alle WIndows 10 Anwender verteilt werden soll.

Wie schon durch die Veröffentlichung von Build 14295 im Fast Ring bekannt, bringt die aktuelle Vorschauversion im Vergleich zum vorherigen Fast Ring Build 14291 keine neuen Features mit, sondern lediglich Fehlerkorrekturen. Für Tester im Slow Ring ist die Liste an Änderungen jedoch signifikant. Unter anderem neu sind für den Nutzer unsichtbare Änderungen am Betriebssystem-Kernel, die Unterstützung für Erweiterungen im Browser Edge (nur für PCs), eine generalüberholte Karten-App und der brandneue Feedback Hub.Neben Bugfixes und den genannten Neuerungen beinhaltet Build 14295 allerdings auch wieder eine Reihe noch nicht ausgemerzter Fehler. Diese sind in ihrer Gesamtheit sicherlich so relevant, dass sich jeder Anwender ganz genau überlegen sollte, ob er sich damit herumschlagen möchte. Für einige der bekannten Probleme liefert Microsoft aber auch gleich Übergangslösungen mit und mehrere der Fehler sind zudem als eher geringfügig zu bewerten. Speziell in Bezug auf Windows 10 Mobile ist schließlich noch zu erwähnen, dass Build 14295 auf allen Geräten installiert werden kann, die bereits mit Windows 10 ausgeliefert werden, also auf Lumia 550, 650, 950, 950 XL, Xiaomi Mi4 und Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL. Darüber hinaus listet Microsoft auf dieser Webseite alle weiteren unterstützten Geräte auf.Microsoft hat den Auftakt zur Entwicklerkonferenz Build 2016 auch dazu genutzt, den bisherigen Erfolg von Windows 10 mit aktuellen Zahlen zu untermauern. So ist das Universal-Betriebssystem laut dem Softwareriesen mittlerweile auf mehr als 270 Millionen Geräten aktiv im Einsatz und damit die bislang am schnellsten von Kunden angenommene Windows-Version.

Microsoft gab heute im Rahmen der Build 2016 Keynote bekannt, dass Windows 10 seit dem Marktstart im Juli 2015 mittlerweile auf mehr als 270 Millionen Geräten läuft. Das bedeutet laut offiziellen Angaben, Windows 10 übertrifft die Adoptionsrate von Windows 7 im selben Zeitraum um 145 Prozent. Gemäß Microsoft-CEO Satya Nadella ist das Betriebssystem die sich bislang am schnellsten verbreitende Windows-Version und das sowohl für den Endverbraucher- als auch Enterprise-Markt.Wie des US-Unternehmen aber außerdem betont, wird Windows 10 nicht nur auf einer Vielzahl ganz unterschiedlicher Geräte - angefangen von Desktop-PCs, Notebooks und Tablets bis hin zu Smartphones oder der Xbox One - genutzt, sondern fährt auch Bestnoten bei der Kundenzufriedenheit ein. Anwender verbrachten mit dem Betriebssystem bislang mehr als 75 Milliarden Stunden, wie der Chef der Windows-Sparte Terry Myerson erklärte.
Die Sterne scheinen aus Sicht Microsofts also gut für Windows 10 zu stehen.Die genannten Zahlen sind aber nicht nur für den Softwareriesen, sondern vor allem auch für Entwickler, die Apps für die sogenannte "Universal Windows Platform" und damit den Windows Store geschrieben haben, oder dies planen, relevant. Die potentielle Zielgruppe für solche Apps hat bereits eine ansehnliche Größe erreicht und wird wohl mittelfristig zügig weiter wachsen.

Natürlich darf aber nicht vergessen werden, dass die hohe Adoptionsrate von Windows 10 auch der Tatsache geschuldet ist, dass Microsoft das OS für Windows 7 und Windows 8 Nutzer seit dem Marktstart als kostenloses Upgrade bereitstellt. Im kommenden Juli wird dieses kostenlose Upgrade-Angebot allerdings nach aktuellem Informationsstand enden. Ob Microsoft bei dieser Strategie bleibt und, wenn ja, wie sich das auf die langfristige Adoption des Betriebssystems auswirken wird, muss erst einmal abgewartet werden. Das Unternehmen selbst sieht sich jedoch auf Kurs, das ambitionierte Ziel von einer Milliarde Windows 10 Geräten in den nächsten Jahren zu erreichen. Einen Beitrag dazu soll auch das für den kommenden Sommer eingeplante Windows 10 Anniversary Update leisten.Microsoft hat heute im Zuge der Eröffnungsveranstaltung zur Entwicklerkonferenz Build 2016 das Windows 10 Anniversary Update angekündigt. Die bislang vielleicht größte Aktualisierung für das Betriebssystem wird im kommenden Sommer sowohl für Notebooks, Desktop-PCs und Tablets als auch Smartphones, die Xbox One und HoloLens verfügbar sein.

Microsoft hat soeben die hauseigene Entwicklerkonferenz Build 2016 (30. März bis 01. April 2016) eröffnet. Im Rahmen der Auftakt-Keynote kündigte der Software-Riese das Windows 10 Anniversary Update an, das im Sommer 2016 rechtzeitig zum einjährigen Geburtstag des Betriebssystems für alle Nutzer kostenlos zum Download angeboten werden wird.Die erste Retail-Version von Windows 10 hatte Microsoft am 29. Juli 2015 für Endkunden veröffentlicht. Mit der offiziellen Verfügbarkeit des Anniversary Updates, das unter Branchenkennern derzeit unter dem Codenamen Redstone bekannt ist, darf also vermutlich ebenfalls im Juli gerechnet werden.Microsoft wird für Teilnehmer am Windows Insider Programm viele der Neuerungen des kommenden Windows 10 Anniversary Updates natürlich schon vor dem offiziellen Verfügbarkeitsdatum im Sommer zum Testen zur Verfügung stellen. Dieser Prozess wurde bereits am Anfang des Jahres 2016 gestartet und noch heute sollen Insider den bislang wohl besten Blick auf kommende Funktionen werfen können. Zu diesen gehören bneispielsweise neue Funktionen für die Anmeldung mit Hilfe von Windows Hello (Gesichts- oder Fingerabdruckerkennung), für die Stifteingabe oder auch den Sprachassistenten Cortana.

Im dem hochwertig verarbeiteten Magnesium-Gehäuse des Surface Book verbaut Microsoft wie beim Surface Pro 4 bis zu 16 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher und SSDs mit 128, 256, 512 oder 1000 Gigabyte Speicherkapazität. An externen Schnittstellen stehen zwei USB-3.0-Ports, ein SD-Kartenslot, ein Mini-DisplayPort und ein Kopfhörerausgang zur Verfügung. Die Tastatur ist hintergrundbeleuchtet, das große Trackpad besteht aus Glas und unterstützt 5-Punkt-Multitouch. Eine besondere Bedeutung kommt beim Surface Book dem auffällige Drehscharnier zu. Das Scharnier beheimatet nicht nur den Mechanismus, der Display- und Tastatur-Teil sicher zusammenhält, sondern es erlaubt auch, das Touchscreen um 360 Grad umzuklappen. So kann das Microsoft-Gerät also auf Wunsch auch wie ein Convertible der Lenovo Yoga Reihe genutzt werden.

Zu den Ausstattungsmerkmalen des ungewöhnlichen Notebooks gehören außerdem Unterstützung für WLAN nach 802.11ac und Bluetooth 4.0, eine Kamera auf der Rückseite mit 8-Megapixel-Sensor, Autofokus und Full-HD-Videofunktion, eine 5-Megapixel-Frontkamera sowie Stereolautsprecher mit Dolby Audio. Als Betriebssystem ist Windows 10 Pro vorinstalliert. Das Surface Book bringt 1,516 Gramm auf die Waage –der Display-Teil für sich genommen wiegt gar nur 728 Gramm – und misst 312,3 × 232,1 × 13,0 - 22,8 Millimeter.Microsoft wird das Surface Book in den USA ab dem 26. Oktober verkaufen und verlangt dort für die kleinste Konfiguration mit Core i5, 8 Gigabyte RAM und 128 Gigabyte SSD 1499 US-Dollar. Für die günstigste Ausstattungsvariante mit Nvidia-GPU werden bereits 1899 US-Dollar fällig. Preise und ein Verfügbarkeitstermin des Surface Book für Deutschland wurden von offizieller Seite noch nicht bekannt gegeben. Wir reichen diese Infos nach, wenn sie vorliegen.

Nach einer schier endlosen Zeit ohne neuem High-End-Smartphone mit Windows-Betriebssystem hat Microsoft heute gleich zwei zeitgemäße Flaggschiffe vorgestellt. Wie durch diverse Leaks schon vorab bekannt, heißen die Geräte Lumia 950 und Lumia 950 XL und bieten moderne Hardware-Features gepaart mit dem neuen Betriebssystem Windows 10 Mobile. Davon abgesehen wurde auch ein Display Dock gezeigt, mit dessen Hilfe sich die beiden Smartphones in einen voll funktionsfähigen PC verwandeln lassen.Das größere Modell unter den beiden Neuvorstellungen von Microsoft ist wie es der Name schon verrät das Lumia 950 XL. Es verfügt über ein 5,7 Zoll großes AMOLED-Display, das mit 2560 x 1440 Pixel auflöst, womit sich eine Pixeldichte von 518 ppi ergibt. Geschützt wird der Bildschirm durch Gorilla Glass 4. Im Inneren des Gehäuses steckt ein Octa-Core-SoC vom Typ Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, der durch eine spezielle Heatpipe vor dem Überhitzen bewahrt werden soll und dem 3 Gigabyte RAM und ein 3340-mAh-Akku zur Seite stehen. Das Aufladen des austauschbaren (!) Energiespeichers kann via Q-Standard auch kabellos erfolgen. Der interne Flash-Speicher ist mit 32 Gigabyte dimensioniert, darf allerdings im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Premium-Smartphones auf dem Markt bei Bedarf noch durch eine microSDXC-Karte erweitert werden.

Bei der Entwicklung der neuen Lumias legte Microsoft genau wie mittlerweile praktisch alle Hersteller von Premium-Smartphones großes Augenmerk auf die Kameratechnik. Das 950 XL wartet mit einer 20 Megapixel PureView-Kamera auf der Rückseite auf, die sowohl über einen optischen Bildstabilisator und ein Carl-Zeiss-Objektiv als auch eine f/1.9-Blende und einen Dreifach-LED-Blitz verfügt. Die Frontkamera kann da in keiner Weise mithalten, ihr Sensor löst aber immerhin mit 5 Megapixel auf. Ein weiteres sehr interessantes Ausstattungsmerkmal findet sich allerdings daneben, nämlich der Infrarot-Iris-Scanner. Dieser kann via Windows Hello Feature von Windows 10 (Mobile) beispielsweise dazu genutzt werden, das Smartphone nur durch einen kurzen Blick sicher zu entsperren.

Das Lumia 950 XL wird es in Schwarz oder Weiß sowohl in einer Single- als auch einer Dual-SIM-Version geben und es soll im November zum Preis von 649 US-Dollar in den USA erhältlich sein. In Deutschland wird es Dezember werden bis das Smartphone im Handel zu finden ist und der empfohlene Verkaufspreis hierzulande soll bei 699 Euro liegen. Laut Datenblatt unterstützt das 950 XL LTE (Cat. 6), WLAN nach 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.1 sowie NFC. Mit einem Computer kann das 950 XL über eine USB 3.0 Schnittstelle mit reversiblem USB Typ-C Anschluss verbunden werden.
Beim Lumia 950 handelt es sich in weiten Teilen um dasselbe Smartphone wie es das Lumia 950 XL verkörpert. Die wichtigsten Unterschiede zum größeren Bruder sind das „nur“ 5,2 Zoll große QHD-Display (2560 x 1440 Pixel) und der Hexa-Core-Prozessor Qualcomm Snapdragon 808, der in Benchmarks etwas schlechter abschneidet als der Snapdragon 810.

Die weiteren Ausstattungsmerkmale des Lumia 950 entsprechen denen des 950 XL fast bis ins letzte Detail. Auch im kleineren Flaggschiff stecken also 3 Gigabyte RAM und 32 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher. Es finden sich dort ebenfalls ein Iris-Scanner, ein microSDXC-Kartenslot, dieselben Konnektivitätsstandards und ein wechselbarer Akku. Einzig die Kapazität des Akkus ist mit 3000 mAh etwas geringer. Auf den ersten Blick nicht ganz klar ist, ob es Unterschiede bei den Kameras gibt. aber laut Microsoft besitzt auch das Lumia 950 die zuvor beschriebene PureView-Kamera mit 20-Megapixel-Sensors und Triple-LED-Blitz auf der Rückseite sowie die 5-Megapixel-Kamera auf der Vorderseite.Microsoft will das Lumia 950 zusammen mit dem Lumia 950 XL im November auf den US-Markt bringen. Der Verkaufspreis soll dort bei 549 US-Dollar liegen. In Deutschland soll das Gerät auch wie das 950 XL ab Dezember verkauft werden und dann 599 Euro kosten.

Als optionales Zubehör für Lumia 950 und Lumia 950 XL wird Microsoft ein Display Dock verkaufen, das für die beiden Geräte ein sehr interessantes zusätzliches Einsatzszenario eröffnet. Dank dem Continuum-Feature von Windows 10 lassen sich die Smartphones verbunden mit dem Dock, einem Bildschirm und Tastatur und Maus wie ein klassischer Windows-PC inklusive Desktop und Startmenü verwenden. Das Dock selbst bietet drei USB-Ports sowie einen HDMI- und einen DisplayPort-Anschluss. Zu Vorführungszwecken demonstrierte Microsoft während des Events auch die Universal Apps Word, PowerPoint und Outlook, die sich nach Anschluss der Smartphones an ein großes Display genau wie Desktop-Programme nutzen ließen.Microsoft hat soeben das Surface Pro 4 vorgestellt. Die neueste Generation der für den Produktiveinsatz ohne Kompromisse konzipierten Tablet-Familie sieht auf den ersten Blick dem Vorgänger Surface Pro 3 sehr ähnlich, bietet aber ein etwas größeres Display, ist flacher, leichter und mit einem Intel Core-Prozessor der 6. Generation (Skylake) ausgestattet. Passend zum neuen Surface Pro hat der US-Softwareriese außerdem wieder ein paar neue Accessoires enthüllt, darunter einen überarbeiteten Stylus, ein Dock und ein dünneres Type Cover.

Auf dem Surface Pro 4 läuft natürlich Microsofts brandneues Betriebssystem Windows 10 und das 8,45 Millimeter dünne Gerät verfügt über ein 12,3 Zoll großes PixelSense-Display mit einer Auflösung von 2736 x 1824 Pixel, was grob vergleichbar ist mit dem Bildschirm eines Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 oder eines Apple iPad Pro. Bei Gegenüberstellung mit dem Pro 3 bietet das Pro 4 trotz des größeren Displays exakt dieselbe Grundfläche, weil der Hersteller einfach den Rahmen um das Panel herum verschmälert hat. Somit passt beispielsweise das Type Cover des Pro 3 auch für das neue Modell. Das soll aber nicht heißen, dass Microsoft für das Pro 4 kein neues andockbares Keyboard entwickelt hat, das noch leichter und besser sein soll als die vorherige Ausführung und auf dem sich zudem ein Fingerabdruckscanner befindet. Darüber hinaus gibt es natürlich auch einen komplett neu entwickelten Surface Pen (Stylus), der 1024 unterschiedliche Druckstufen erkennt, im Endstück einen „Radierer“ integriert und sich magnetisch an das Tablet anheften lässt, wenn er nicht benötigt wird. Darüber hinaus lässt sich mit dem neuen Stift, den es in unterschiedlichen Farben zu kaufen geben wird, nun auch Microsofts Sprachassistent Cortana aktivieren.

Microsofts Angaben nach ist das Surface Pro 4 der im Moment dünnste und leistungsfähigste PC mit Intel Core-Prozessor überhaupt. Um das möglich zu machen, wurden noch einmal diverse Bauelemente des Surface Pro Designs optimiert oder verändert. So wird das Display des Pro 4 beispielsweise durch Gorilla Glass 4 geschützt und allein für die Verarbeitung der Eingaben auf dem Touchscreen wurde ein G5 genannter, spezieller Co-Prozessor implementiert, durch den das Benutzererlebnis nochmals deutlich verbessert worden sein soll. Microsoft verzichtet aber gezielt darauf, das Surface Pro 4 mit anderen Tablets auf dem Markt zu vergleichen. Stattdessen verspricht das Unternehmen, dass das Surface Pro 4 rund 50 Prozent schneller ist als Apples aktuelles MacBook Air - was auch immer das konkret heißen mag. Um den Anspruch als hochwertiges Premium-Tablet, das ein Notebook getrost ersetzen kann, endgültig gerecht werden zu können, kommt das Pro 4 davon abgesehen erstmals mit bis zu 16 Gigabyte RAM und bis zu 1 Terabyte Flash-Speicher.

If you think something like this would be worth it, today Amazon has a deal on one of the better options for the flagship (for now) iPad Air 2, the Logitech Type+. It normally retails in the $60-80 range, but as of this writing you can pick up its blue model for $38, easily the lowest it’s been to date.The Type+ isn’t as fully-featured as a high-end case like the Belkin Qode Ultimate Pro, but it has the essentials down pat. It’s among the slimmest (0.67 in) and lightest (15 oz) of its kind, and its rubbery fabric finish is both decent-looking and easy to grip. It automatically sleeps and wakes the Air 2 when you open or close it, and a magnetic strip does a good job of keeping the tablet in place. Logitech rates its battery as lasting 3 months on a charge, which is fine. The one major negative, build wise, is that it can only hold the iPad at one angle.Most importantly, it’s a solid keyboard — outside of a few cramped edge keys, it’s well-sized, well-spaced, and generally clicky. It runs smoothly, and its handful of iOS-specific shortcuts are nice to have. It lacks the Qode Pro’s backlighting, but at this price, it’s just better-made than any cheap alternative in the $30-40 range.

It’s worth noting that some user reviews have complained of a defect which causes one of the Type+’s case holders to break. I’ve actually encountered this problem myself with a similar Logitech case, but I can say that, on the off chance you do get unlucky, it’s very minor, and only really comes with you removing and reinserting the iPad very often over time. If you want to make your iPad a little more productive, either should serve you well.A new hybrid-electric aircraft, the first ever to be able to recharge its batteries in flight, has just been tested in the UK, the University of Cambridge announced in a statement today.The plane uses a "parallel hybrid-electric propulsion system," where an electric motor works with a regular petrol motor to drive a propeller. It's just been trialled at a test site in Northamptonshire.

According to Cambridge engineers, the plane uses 30% less fuel than a similar model that only uses a petrol engine. More importantly, the new design can also recharge its batteries during flight — something that's never been achieved before. "Although hybrid cars have been available for more than a decade, what’s been holding back the development of hybrid or fully-electric aircraft until now is battery technology," project leader and Cambridge professor Paul Robertson said in a statement. "Until recently, they have been too heavy and didn’t have enough energy capacity. But with the advent of improved lithium-polymer batteries, similar to what you’d find in a laptop computer, hybrid aircraft – albeit at a small scale – are now starting to become viable."The plane uses its 4-stroke piston engine and electric motor during take off and climbing. But once in cruising mode, the electric motor switches to an electric generator in a similar way to a hybrid car. Once full height is reached, the generator mode can then recharge the batteries or be used in motor assist mode to minimise fuel consumption, the university said.

The project is vital to combating the impact air travel has on the environment. The team notes that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates "aviation is responsible for around 2% of global man-made carbon dioxide emissions."The plane is a step "towards cleaner, low-carbon air travel," but it's not there yet. More research is still needed to prolong the flying time. A second version with the same specs but 128GB of storage will go for $999.By comparison, the least expensive Surface with Windows RT and 32GB of storage lists for $499 – 44 per cent less than the cheapest version with Windows 8 Pro. A Windows RT Surface with 64GB of storage will set you back $699.What's more, the top-end Surface with Windows RT comes bundled with a Touch Cover, which doubles as a keyboard. Neither of the Windows 8 Pro models will include a cover, so if you want a keyboard you'll need to fork over an additional $120, bringing the total to $1,019 for the 64GB version or $1,119 for the 128GB version.

The new Surface models' high price tags mean they'll be hard-pressed to win over fans of the top-selling tablet to date, Apple's iPad. The latest-generation fruity fondleslabs range from $499 for a 16GB version to $699 for one with 64GB (keyboards not included).Microsoft's argument is that the Surface with Windows 8 Pro isn't just any tablet. According to Redmond's marketing materials, it "runs current Windows 7 desktop applications and integrates with your existing enterprise management infrastructure." In other words, it's a business device, not just a consumer toy.That means it also supports "the full Office experience," including Outlook, Access, Visio, SharePoint Designer, and other business-oriented components of the Office suite. Surface with Windows RT only supports Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.But hang on – Surface with Windows RT might not be able to run every Office application, but the ones it does support come bundled at no extra charge. Surface with Windows 8 Pro doesn't include Office, so add that to your shopping list, as well.Mind you, the hardware specs for the Windows 8 Pro version of Surface are beefier than those of the Windows RT version. In addition to the increased storage, the Windows 8 Pro tablet bumps the RAM from 2GB to 4GB and packs a third-generation Intel Core i5 processor in place of the Windows RT version's Tegra 3.

Like the Windows RT Surface, the Windows 8 Pro version has a 10.6-inch display, but it runs at 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution instead of 1366-by-768, and it supports ten-point multi-touch instead of five. One can't help but note, however, that these displays are still a far cry from the latest iPad's 9.7-inch, 2048-by-1536 Retina display.The Windows 8 Pro Surface also includes a full-size USB 3.0 port and a Mini DisplayPort, and – flying in the face of the late Steve Jobs' wisdom about tablets – it comes with a stylus. According to Microsoft, the pen pairs with technology called Palm Block that "will prevent your handwriting from getting interrupted if you accidently place your palm on the screen as you write."With specs like these, Surface with Windows 8 Pro really competes less with the likes of the iPad and Android tablets and more with Ultrabooks, many of which now offer similar components – including touchscreens – and are priced comparably to the Intel-powered Surface.But Surface is still a tablet, not an Ultrabook, and Microsoft has yet to prove its case that a significant chunk of the market is looking for tablets to replace traditional PCs and laptops. Sales of Windows 8 PCs in general have been slow, which points to a market that's resistant to dramatic change. According to the NPD Group, sales of Windows 8 tablets "have been almost non-existent."

And if customers do decide they want Windows 8 tablets, there are plenty of manufacturers with more experience designing and building them than Microsoft. Surface with Windows RT buyers have reported a variety of odd manufacturing glitches, which may be minor problems for a casual-use tablet but would likely be deal-breakers if they cropped up on an expensive piece of kit designed for general-purpose computing.Not that any of this will dissuade Microsoft. It has already bet a lot on Surface, and in October CEO Steve Ballmer said the company "obviously" plans to make more hardware.How obvious those plans remain in the second half of 2013 will likely depend a lot on how customers react to the launch of Surface with Windows 8 Pro in January – the exact date of which is as yet unspecified. Now Dell’s making a play for the demographic that was lured by Apple, but it’s not pushing Windows 8 or even Windows 7 on its hardware – it’s promoting Ubuntu.Dell today released Project Sputnik, a Dell XPS 13 tuned to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS that had been unveiled as a Skunkworks project in May.Sputnik features an Intel i7 CPU, 8GB RAM and 256GB memory, a basic set of drivers, tools and utilities and is priced $1,549 with a year of support. The machine is only on sale in the US and Canada, but will go international next year.Standard price for the regular machine from Dell is $1,499; you can compare processor, memory and CPU with the relevant MacBooks from Apple here. As ever, Dell undercuts Cupertino on the price, so the question is do you want to splash out a little more for a PC running Ubuntu instead of Windows for dev?Barton George, Dell’s web vertical sector director, who initiated Sputnik, said the company is looking at expanding with a “beefier” platform option for devs. “The XPS 13 is perfect for those who want an ultra light and mobile system but we have heard from quite a few who would also like an offering that was more workstation-like with a bigger screen and more RAM,” he said in a statement.

Sputnik is part product and part experiment, with Dell reversing the standard OEM cookie-cutter approach to knocking out PCs by talking to devs and crafting software.Attention was paid to making sure the XPS 13 drivers worked with Linux out of the box, with efforts to lock down Wi-Fi, screen brightness and touchpad and multi-touch support. As software packages go, Sputnik has a basic install image here.Dell has departed from the norm by working with devs to build a profile tool and cloud launcher, which lets users build and install their own custom, web-centric development environment. In the past, IDE tools have tried to force devs into their own version of some kind of a fully equipped programming cockpit.The profile tools give developers access to profiles for things like Ruby and Android, letting you craft your own development environment and chains of tools. The Cloud launcher lets you build simulate cloud environments on the laptop and then upload them using Ubuntu’s JuJu. Ubuntu supports OpenStack for cloud dev and run time, and the cloud platform is also supported by Dell.

There’s no hint of an expectation that Sputnik will help Dell’s server sales, nor is this being pushed as the equivalent of the year of the Linux desktop. Dell is not going big on Ubuntu on Ultrabooks, continuing its caution of the past, where it has offered Linux on just a tiny number of relatively low-specced laptops subject to demand.Dell, it seems, is trying to identify the right machine for the right market. Whether that will lead to easing out Apple as the dev's choice, changing the way it builds PCs into something more collaborative or even circuitously floating more OpenStack clouds running on Dell hardware is a work in progress. Le commentaire provient après une question formulée par Thurrott, qui a demandé si la mise à jour Anniversary Update pourrait être une mise à jour cumulative offrant de nouvelles fonctionnalités, des corrections et des améliorations, au lieu d’une version entièrement nouvelle.Il est important de savoir si la mise à jour va garder tous les fichiers, applications et autres contenus intacts sur le périphérique. Il y a beaucoup de façons de le faire », précise Dona Sarkar. Nous essayons donc beaucoup de choses en interne pour voir ce qui est logique ».Après avoir déclaré qu’elle ne sera pas responsable de l’introduction de la mise à jour Windows 10 Anniversary Update pour les propriétaires de Xbox One (au moins pas maintenant »), elle a admis que la mise à jour sera déclenchée par vagues à partir du 2 août. C’est un processus logique pour Microsoft, tout comme Google et Apple le font lorsqu’une mise à jour est déployée.

All we can say for sure is that this is going to be a prolonged and entertaining battle, and Intel is not going to relinquish a millimetre of ground in the data centre without a fight. The ARM collective better get its engineering on, and pick fab partners that can deliver on schedule with no bugs. EE’s LTE network went live this week, opening its 1800MHz band to the public and becoming the first, and currently only, one of the major operators to offer a 4G service.It has a six-month lead, give or take, on rivals Vodafone and O2, which have to await the outcome of Ofcom’s 800MHz and 2.6GHz frequency auctions before they can roll out their own 4G services. Three is set to gain part of the 1800MHz band anyway, though EE doesn’t have to hand any of it over until September 2013 and then a second section a year on from that.That leaves EE, for now, the only game in town for the highest data speeds over cellular. Only data, of course, since 4G doesn’t yet provide voice. For the time being making or taking a call on a 4G phone will force the handset into 3G mode - HSPA, in point of fact - or even 2G if it’s not in a region where 3G is available. Data connections made during a call will likewise only run at HSPA+ speeds.

The other, more crucial limit is the scope of EE’s 4G service: only ten towns and cities, though it’s naturally working to extend that as quickly as it can, the better to build a solid user base before the other operators get in on the act.Encouraging punters to sign up is all about persuading them that they need the speeds it can offer. To that end, EE sent out a fleet of HTC One XL handsets to journalists last week to allow them to try out 4G.Usually, getting this kind of kit out of companies is akin to sourcing Type O Rhesus Negative from a block of granite, so EE is clearly bending over backwards to encourage hacks to test the network, get some nice, juicy download speeds, and to do so early before the hoi polloi get on and start clogging up its cell stations with their GoogleTweet FacePlus updates.Just to make sure, it also slipped the testers a wee 200ml bottle of Moët et Chandon - not vintage, mind - to toast the network’s launch. How many reviewers will mention that, I wonder?

With all this in mind, here are the results of the week I spent with the HTC One XL and its EE Sim. It’s a micro not nano Sim, so I was unable to slip it into the iPhone 5 I happen to be using at the moment. I couldn’t do a direct device-to-device comparison, but I have included test figures captured from the Apple handset and the O2 Sim the powers that be at Vulture Central have seen fit to supply their hacks with.The iPhone can do not only HSPA+ but also dual-channel HSDPA, but that’s currently only supported by Three. I’ll update the numbers when a Sim from Three arrives.As a final check, I tested both the iPhone and the One XL on the same Wi-Fi networks and in the same locations. For all my testing, I used Ookla’s Speed Test app, which uses the same ping time, download and upload speed measures as the firm’s widely used Speedtest.net website.Inevitably with wireless data, you’re making measurements not merely of the core technology’s capabilities but also the network and wireless environment, which can change moment to moment. These are, then, not scientifically rigorous measurements, and with location being so crucial, your own mileage may vary.

It's another enterprise techcast hosted by Greg Knieriemen and Sarah Vela. Greg and Sarah host special guest Mark Twomey (@Storagezilla) from EMC, who brings them the low-down on everything we all want to know about ARMed server chip revolution. Sitting at my desk near, but not next to, the office’s windows, I got 4G download speeds - on two signal bars, by the way - of around 11Mb/s and uploads of 17Mb/s. Out in the street, away from Leicester Square and in the Strand, I clocked up download and upload rates of over 20Mb/s and 10Mb/s, respectively.All good and on a par with EE’s claimed 8-12Mb/s average download speed. The company also quotes a peak speed of 40Mb/s, but I never got that. And if I moved away from the office windows, further inside the building though with line of sight and no walls in between, I didn’t get a 4G signal at all. The One XL dropped out of 4G and, after a noticeable pause - during which time the test app reported no internet connection - into 3G then quickly to 3G+ and then almost instantly to H+ - HSPA+, in other words.

This yielded down and up speeds of 1.5Mb/s and 0.5Mb/s, respectively. The iPhone 5 in the same location clocked up 3.5Mb/s and 1.0Mb/s. At my desk, I only got 5.3Mb/s and 0.9Mb/s through O2.Making or taking a call on the One XL likewise cuts the 4G connection, to run the voice over a 3G link. That limits in-call data connections to the slower speed.I live in North London a couple of kilometers due north of the centre. Here, I couldn’t get a 4G signal in any of the locations I tried, one in my flat, the other outside a pub four or five blocks away. The One XL’s HSPA+ performance wasn’t at all bad - downloads at 7.7Mb/s, uploads at 2.1Mb/s - but so much for EE’s 4G coverage. For comparison, though, O2 could manage only a poor 1.7Mb/s and 2.3Mb/s in the same locations.

My 5GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi network at home yielded download and upload speeds of 27.2Mb/s and 3.1Mb/s, respectively. At work, I got 14.7Mb/s and 25.9Mb/s on the 2.4GHz band and using 802.11g.One other point: 4G ought to provide a much lower latency that older cellular technologies. While EE's figures do show an improvement, it's not as great as I would have expected.There’s more to 4G than speed, of course. You have to consider how much extra it will cost you, for starters. EE’s two-year contracts run from £36 to £56, all of which include unlimited calls and texts, but offer different monthly data allowances, from 500MB to 8GB. You can add 50MB to 4GB extra for £3 to £20, so for £76 a month you can get 12GB of data transfers. You pay roughly 0.7 pence per megabyte. The fees include a handset, of course.The limit is critical: Three, for example, will sell you unlimited HSPA+ data for just £15.90 a month. Your choice then is not merely about speed and how much you’re willing to pay to get it, but how much data you expect to transfer.

Incidentally, Three’s package doesn’t include unlimited calls and texts, but I’d guess that 600 minutes and 5000 texts is effectively more than most folk use and therefore effectively unlimited.EE will offer 12 month Sim-only phone plans on 9 November, priced at £15 a month less than the two-year deals discussed above. It offers USB and Wi-Fi modems too for laptop usage. EE's roaming rates are par for the course.Finally, battery life: the One XL died less than 24 hours after it's initial charge. I ran the test app ten times, checked a few websites, set up and checked my email and made a phone call. That's it. Expect to make frequent visits to your charger.Open ... and Shut In a Windows world we bought the product. In Google's world we are the product. Judging from market share trends, we apparently don't mind being bought and sold. At least, so long as the price is right.Yes, Apple gets all the news (and profits), but it's Google Android that is set to displace Microsoft Windows by 2016, according to Gartner. So much of the media's focus is on the battle between Android and Apple's iOS for the heart and soul of the mobile industry that we forget the meta-battle between both iOS and Android against yesterday's desktop market, still owned by Windows.
