Die bietet Autofokus mit Gesichts- und Lächelerkennung und einen Aufnahme-Modus für HDR-Fotografen. In einer Sekunde lässt sich die Kamera aus dem Standby aufwecken, um spontane Schnappschüsse zu realisieren. Videotelefonate gelingen über eine 1,1-Megapixel-Linse, die sich auf der Frontseite des Smartphones befindet. Für die Speicherung von Bildern, Apps und anderen Daten stellt das Gerät acht GB internen Flash-Speicher zur Verfügung. Reicht das nicht aus, kann über einen Micro-SD-Speicherkarteneinschub nachgerüstet werden. Bis zu 32 GB lassen sich auf diese Weise ergänzen.Das Sony Xperia style wird Mitte des dritten Quartals 2014 exklusiv bei der Deutschen Telekom zu haben sein. Ohne Vertrag fallen für das Smartphone, das in den Farben Weiß, Violett und Schwarz zu haben ist, 349 Euro an. Das hat der südkoreanische Konzern Samsung vergangene Woche Donnerstag auf einer Tizen-Entwickler-Konferenz im russischen Moskau erklärt. Ursprünglich sollte neben einigen Vorträgen und Workshops für Tizen-Entwickler auch der Startschuss zum Verkauf des Samsung Z fallen, aber das hat der Hersteller im letzten Moment abgesagt. Der Grund dafür ist ein ziemlich profaner: Das Angebot an Apps für die Tizen-Plattform ist Samsung einfach noch zu klein, als das man einen Start des ersten Tizen-Smartphones rechtfertigen könne.Trotz allem sind über 300 Entwickler der Einladung von Samsung gefolgt und haben den Weg nach Moskau angetreten. Etliche Entwickler haben die weniger gute Neuigkeit mit Humor aufgenommen und gesagt, dass deren Apps nun immerhin schneller gefunden werden. Wäre der Tizen Store besser gefüllt, wäre das Auffinden der Apps von kleineren Entwicklern umso schwieriger. Insofern verwundert es nicht, dass zahlreiche Programmierer die Entwicklung für Tizen künftig nur noch als Hobby betrachten. An Tizen entwickelt Samsung nun schon über drei Jahre in Kooperation mit Intel und LG. Zuletzt gab es Neues während des MWC 2014 zu bestaunen, worunter ZTE mit dem ZTE Geek einem ersten Tizen-Gerät auch Hardware vorgestellt hat. Mit NTT DoCoMo ist zudem Anfang des Jahres einer der größten Unterstützer auf Seiten der Mobilfunk-Anbieter abgesprungen und hat seine Pläne für Tizen komplett aufgegeben.Die aktuellen Flaggschiff-Modelle im Smartphone-Bereich setzen noch auf Qualcomms Snapdragon 801, egal ob es sich dabei um das Galaxy S5, OnePlus One oder LG G3 handelt. In Südkorea ist aber schon die LTA-A Variante des Samsung Galaxy S5 mit den Snapdragon 805 erhältlich. In Europa dürften nun auch bald die ersten Smartphones und Tablets mit dem letzten großen 32-Bit SoC von Qualcomm erscheinen. Dies allein ist Grund genug für uns, einen genaueren Blick auf den Snapdragon 805 zu werfen.
Im März hatten wir bereits die Unterschiede zwischen Snapdragon 800 und Snapdragon 801 aufgezeigt, dieses mal ist der Snapdragon 805 von Qualcomm an der Reihe. In Sachen Leistung hielten sich die Unterschiede zwischen Snapdragon 800 und 801 stark in Grenzen, was angesichts der fast identischen Architektur auch nur wenig verwunderlich war. Die diversen Testberichte der aktuellen Flaggschiff-Smartphones unterstrichen die geringen Leistungszuwächse dies auch in Benchmark-Ergebnissen. Die Konkurrenz von Qualcomm schläft allerdings nicht, denn mit dem HiSilicon Kirin 920 hat Huawei einen Konkurrenten zum Snapdragon 805 in den Startlöchern. Samsung setzt zwar nach wie vor meistens auf die Prozessoren von Qualcomm, entwickelt aber seit längerer Zeit mit den Exynos-Chips auch eigene SoCs. Im beliebten AnTuTu-Benchmark konnte der Samsung Exynos 5433 sogar den Snapdragon 805 hinter sich zurück lassen.Qualcomm ruht sich allerdings ebenfalls nicht auf seinen Lorbeeren aus und hat mit dem Snapdragon 808 und Snapdragon 810 bereits erste 64-Bit Prozessoren in der Hinterhand. Bis dahin wird allerdings der Snapdragon 805 als letzter großer 32-Bit SoC von großem Interesse sein für die Käuferschaft. Eines der ersten Smartphones mit dem Snapdragon 805 ist das Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A in Südkorea, welches wohl auch den Weg nach Europa und Deutschland finden wird. Der Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 beherbergt vier Krait-450 Kerne, welche eine Taktfrequenz von maximal 2,7 GHz aufweisen können, im SoC verbaut ist ebenfalls die neue Adreno 420 GPU-Einheit und ein Gobi-9x35-Modem welches LTE der Kategorie 6 unterstützt und somit LTE-Advanced Support bietet. In ersten Tests zeigt sich, dass die CPU selbst nur wenig schneller ist als die Einheit im Snapdragon 801. Anders sieht es da aber bei der GPU aus, denn die Adreno 420 GPU kann die Adreno 330 GPU im Snapdragon 801 deutlich hinter sich lassen. Qualcomms Adreno 420 bietet Open GL ES 3.1-Support und Direct3D 11.2-Unterstützung und bringt somit etwa erstmals moderne Effekte wie Tessellation auf die Android-Plattform mit Qualcomm Chips. Das Speicherinterface ist mit 2x64 Bit gegenüber 2x32 Bit deutlich flotter ausgefallen und ermöglicht Datentransfer-Raten von bis zu 29,8 GByte/s gegenüber maximal 14,9 GByte/s beim Snapdragon 801. Der Snapragon 805 wird allerdings wie der Snapdragon 801 im 28nm Verfahren von TSCM hergestellt.
Erste Benchmarks von Golem zeigen vor allem im Grafikbereich deutliche Geschwindigkeitsvorteile gegenüber dem Vorläufer-Modell auf. So erreicht der Snapdragon 805 im GFX Bench 3.0 in FullHD und T-Rex Offscreen-Benchmark etwa 42,2 fps gegenüber 28,2 fps beim Snapdragon 801. Bei AnTuTu liegen die Unterschiede im CPU Float-Benchmark bei 4.486 zu 3.733 Punkten zwischen den beiden Prozessoren von Qualcomm. In Europa wird es allerdings noch etwas dauern, bis wir erste Smartphones oder Tablets mit dem Snapdragon 805 zu Gesicht bekommen, auf dem Papier und in Benchmarks scheint der neue SoC von Qualcomm allerdings einen größeren Leistungssprung zu bewerkstelligen als dies noch beim Wechsel von Snapdragon 800 auf Snapdragon 801 der Fall war. Vor 10 Tagen hatten wir bereits die letzten Meldungen rund um das iPhone 6 von Apple zusammen getragen, dabei ging es vor allem um die verbaute Hardware und das Datum der Vorstellung. Je näher die Vorstellung rückt, desto mehr Gerüchte tauchen auch im Netz auf. So gab es zuletzt auch wieder neue Videos, welche die Front samt Saphirglas aufgezeigt haben sollen. Im Video wird dabei demonstriert, wie stabil der Displayschutz des iPhone 6 ausfallen soll. Die Displayabdeckung aus Saphirglas wird dabei nicht nur mit Schlüsseln, sondern sogar mit einem Messer bearbeitet.Das Apple iPhone 6 wird ziemlich sicher als 4,7-Zoll und 5,5-Zoll-Variante in den Handel kommen, besonders zur größeren Variante gab es aber auch immer wieder Gerüchte bezüglich Produktionsschwierigkeiten. KGI Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo geht sogar davon aus, dass aufgrund der vorherrschenden Probleme das größere Modell erst später auf den Markt gebracht werden kann. Möglicherweise könnte das 5,5-Zoll-Modell in kleinen Mengen nach dem Oktober in den Handel gelangen oder sogar erst im kommenden Jahr. Gründe für die Produktionsschwierigkeiten sind unter anderem das neue Gehäuse aus Metall und das verwendete Saphirglas. Kuo geht weiterhin davon aus, dass mit der Veröffentlichung des iPhone 6 die Preise für das iPhone 5s und iPhone 5c heruntergesetzt werden. Besonders letztere Aussagen dürften nicht wirklich überraschend für die meisten sein, da Apple doch in der Regel immer so vor geht. It's like the Apple's silicone case for iPhone, but with a weird growth on its back.Other battery cases with fully rounded backs, like Mophie's Juice Pack Air for iPhone 6s, actually look better than the "protruding growth" look Apple went with.And the early reviews weren't kind about the design. Lauren Goode from the Verge said " It looks like you tried to shove a few too many credit cards and ID cards into the back of your iPhone case." It's surprising to see Apple put so much effort into its accessories only to be outdone by third-party competitors like Mophie and Logitech.They're not terrible products, but they compromise too much: the Magic Mouse should be able to charge while it's still in use, and the new iPhone Smart Battery Case looks so awkward that you'll wish Apple had just made the iPhone slightly thicker in the first place in order to give you more battery life. As a tentpole for innovation, it's surprising this is the best Apple can do.Microsoft has released an update for the Surface Book and Surface Pro but failed to fix many of the issues users have had with the laptop and tablet, according to a blog post from Paul Thurrot.Thurrot, one of the most well-respected Microsoft bloggers, recently coined the term "Surfacegate" for the issues facing Surface users, which include faulty screens, poor software performance, and a recall of chargers because they pose a fire risk. "Microsoft has maintained complete radio silence on the rampant reliability issues that dog Surface Book and Surface Pro 4," Thurrot wrote. The new update doesn't fix these issues, however. According to a Microsoft blog post, the update fixes a battery issue, a Wi-Fi issue, improves the detection of the Surface keyboard, and improve the stability of the graphics on a small number of Book laptops. "Today, Microsoft has finally delivered something—anything—for beleaguered Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 users who are happy to accept even a partial fix for the many issues they are seeing," Thurrot writes. "And this does appear to be a partial fix: There's no hint that any of this will fix the single biggest issue, which is related to the new power management states that come from Skylake," he continued.The power management issue means the Surface loses a lot of battery during sleep, when it should lose none. Other Surface users took to Twitter to complain that the software update did not fix many of the issues they have with the Surface. Microsoft released a new, high-end version of the Surface Book and Pro recently and recently published a blog post entitled "Surfacing the Facts" which, as Thurrot notes, "has to do with the already-explained Surface/NFL incident from last weekend," rather than addressing the issues users face.

In each of the past three years, Microsoft has made the same bold claim: The Surface is the perfect replacement for your laptop and your tablet, a dreamy all-in-one miracle device.But I've never agreed with Microsoft. Even though the Surface technically had a lot of laptop and tablet features, it didn't execute them particularly well. The track pad and keyboard felt cheap and unresponsive. There weren't great apps to use in tablet mode. And Windows 8 was a disaster.On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Book, a laptop with a clever hinge that lets you detach the screen from the keyboard and use it as a tablet. This is the kind of computer I've been waiting for, something that can do it all without compromising design or usability.It's light and powerful, has incredible battery life, and looks good to boot. I spent about 15 minutes playing around with a Surface Book after Microsoft's event in New York on Tuesday, and I can tell the company is on to something. This is the device Microsoft should have originally launched when it began making the Surface three years ago. It's also a blow to Apple, which recently unveiled its own take on a Surface-like device with the iPad Pro. I used the iPad Pro briefly at Apple's launch event a few weeks ago, and I wasn't exactly blown away. It feels like a niche product whose appeal will mainly be to people like graphics artists. The keyboard cover wasn't that great either. It felt cheaply made and was difficult to type on, as with the original Surface.The Surface Book feels much more refined. Though it's technically a laptop-tablet hybrid, it's the first in the category that doesn't feel like one. It's a laptop when you need it, or a big-screen tablet when you need it. There aren't any obvious compromises as there are with other Surfaces.(By the way, Microsoft did announce another new Surface, the Surface Pro 4, which looks like an updated version of what we've seen before. I'm not into it.)To be clear, these are only first impressions. Microsoft made some bold claims Tuesday, saying the Surface Book was 50% more powerful than the MacBook Pro. There are a few reasons why 600 million people currently use PCs that are at least five years old, and none of them involve outdated hardware suddenly being en vogue. Not everyone needs the latest and greatest, and in many cases, the price of a higher-end notebook is simply prohibitive. That said, those that can afford to upgrade don’t have to drop four figures just to get something nice. The Asus Zenbook UX305CA is one relatively affordable notebook that proves this, and today, Microsoft has it down to $600. While it’s hit this point in the past, that’s still about $100 off its usual going rate, and almost as low as it gets for an Ultrabook that looks as refined as this.We’ve explained why we like the Zenbook UX305CA in our budget laptops buying guide, so head there for a full rundown. To put it briefly, though, the Zenbook UX305 line is one of the best values among Windows PCs today.
Whereas most sub-$700 notebooks — Chromebooks aside — are chunky and meant for a desk, the Zenbook comes off like a budget-friendly MacBook Air, measuring just under 0.5 inches thick and weighing 2.6 pounds. It’s as attractive and portable as you’ll get for the money, and it’s supplemented by ample specs: a 13.3-inch 1080p IPS display, a 256GB solid state drive, 8GB of RAM, and a decent 9 or so hours of battery life. And since Microsoft sells it as a Signature Edition device, it comes with a bloat-free version of Windows 10.The only major hangup with this particular model is its Intel Core m3-6Y30 processor. It’s a sixth-gen chip, but a Core m, while improved, is still generally less powerful than a Core i3 in practice. It is capable of getting things done, but gaming is a reach, and you don’t want to push too hard with media editing. For everyday browsing and less professional desktop apps, though, it’s competent. Not bad at all, just closer to what you'd expect for the money. If you want this design with a more powerful chip, you can pay up for a Core i5-packing Zenbook UX305LA, but at that point you’re a ways away from the budget range. If you need something a little bit stronger, there’s the $550 Acer Aspire E5-573G, but then you’re doubling the thickness and weight. Asus a73b Battery all-laptopbattery.com Despite the novel name, VAVA's Voom speaker has gotten quite a bit of buzz on both YouTube and Amazon.Since its release last November, reviewers on Amazon have praised the Voom's sound quality, specifically the bass response. That bass comes courtesy of the speaker's large-for-its-size subwoofer.All of the Voom's controls are on top of the unit, including its power, Bluetooth pairing, and play/pause button. There's also an EQ button that lets you cycle through "normal", "party", and "surround" modes. Party mode adds even more bass into the mix, while surround mode simulates a surround-sound experience with the Voom's three speaker and two passive radiator system.One reviewer mentioned that you can pair multiple devices with the Voom simultaneously, so switching between streaming music from your phone and a movie's soundtrack from your laptop won't require you to sync every time. Those with NFC-enabled devices can also pair with the speaker that way. VAVA pegs the battery life of the Voom at 10 hours, and reviewers have mentioned getting around that much juice out of it, less if they choose to charge a device through the USB port on the back of the speaker. For charging, you can plug the speaker into the wall, or charge over micro USB. Charging through an outlet will be substantially faster, but having the ability to recharge the Voom over micro USB is a nice touch.Ultimately you'll have to trust your ears, but for under $100, the VAVA Voom seems like a solid choice for a Bluetooth speaker, delivering good sound with a couple of neat extras. While the Surface Pro 4 is an iterative update to the Surface Pro 3, the Book is an entirely new machine. It's a laptop but with tablet qualities, such as a large touch screen. Apple hasn't been wresting on its hardware laurels, however. The company introduced a brand new iPad Pro back in September and has recently updated both the MacBook Air and Pro with new internals, placing them at the front of the market. Both companies are vying for similar customers: those who want the flexibility of a light-weight device (such as a tablet or ultra-thin PC) with the power of a larger machine. All models have exceptional battery life — 10 hours or more — but in other areas they vary wildly. It seems pretty clear that 2017 is going to be the year that Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant really begins to hit its stride, going from a fast-growing niche product to a mainstream must-have.While Microsoft and especially Google have made their competitive strategies clear — even Samsung and Baidu have started to make rumbles in the market — there's one elephant that, notably, isn't in the room yet: Apple, the most valuable company in the world and a notorious latecomer to any new product category.
While Apple recently built Siri into the Apple TV, the company is said to be working on a direct competitor to the Amazon Echo — one that would apparently be more advanced than anything we've seen, down to a possible facial-recognition camera so it knows who's talking. That device, if and when it comes out, would bring Apple's 5-year-old Siri assistant head-to-head with Alexa.And the clock is ticking. Every Alexa-compatible Echo speaker, lightbulb, thermostat, refrigerator, and car that people buy today they probably won't replace for many years, meaning the critical market for early adopters is already self-selecting outside of whatever Apple has up its sleeve.Meanwhile, Wall Street is worried as ever that Apple is falling way behind as computing moves past the touch screen and into augmented reality, virtual reality, and yeah, artificially intelligent voice-powered assistants like the Echo. It doesn't help that sales of Apple's all-important iPhone are showing signs of sagging.But when Apple introduced its AirPods wireless earphones in September, it also took the lid off of the W1 chip, a little technology for improving Bluetooth audio that lays the groundwork for Apple's next big thing. It's already here, and it's going to make a big splash in the months and years to come. The W1 chip is Apple's new technology for making Bluetooth a lot more user-friendly. It debuted on the AirPods ($159) and the Beats Solo3 Wireless ($299) headphones, both available now.In many ways, the AirPods, Beats Solo3, and other W1 devices are standard Bluetooth headsets. They'll work with any Android phone, Windows PC, or Blackberry you might happen to have lying around, the same way Bluetooth gadgetry always has.But the magic happens when you're using a W1 headset with an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac.First, you turn it on next to your unlocked iPhone or iPad. Second, you click "connect." Now they're automatically paired with any other Apple gadget that's signed in to your iCloud account. Switching from iPhone to Mac and back takes a click.Apple's W1 confers other benefits, too. When you're using it with an Apple gadget, the chip grants tremendous range — with the Beats Solo3, I was able to vacuum my entire small house with my phone charging in the bedroom without losing audio. Better yet, W1 uses some kind of magic optimization technique to greatly extend battery life.The next W1 device we know about is the long-delayed BeatsX fitness earbuds. Going into 2017, expect a lot more W1-powered headphones to hit the market, most — if not all — manufactured by Apple and its Beats subsidiary. The W1 does something crucial for Apple right off the bat: It provides something cool, different, and convenient in a way that requires you to own all kinds of Apple gadgetry. Not only has the W1's it-just-works experience swayed me from considering an Android phone, it also caused me to spend considerably more time on my Mac after a year and a half on Microsoft's Windows 10.It means Apple has something that no Android phone — or Windows laptop, for that matter — can match. It also opens the door for a world where people are always wearing their headphones, with Apple's Siri only a tap away.This, in turn, means that Apple's competitor to the omnipresent Alexa is hiding in plain sight — in the iPhones and iPads that more than a billion people own and in the wireless headphones that Apple is so keen to push. Ein entsprechendes Modell für den freien Handel sollte innerhalb ein paar Wochen folgen, mittlerweile sind daraus knapp drei Monate geworden. Ende Oktober steht die Dell World Konferenz an und so sickern jetzt wenig überraschend aussagekräftige Informationen zu kommenden Geräten des US-Computerherstellers durch. Nur wenigen Wochen nachdem schon einmal über einen neuen Microsoft Surface Konkurrenten von Dell namens XPS 12 zu lesen war, hat WinFuture konkrete Details und qualitativ hochwertige Fotos des Convertibles in die Finger bekommen.Das neue XPS 12 trägt den Angaben der deutschen Publikation die Nummer 9250 im Namen, um es vom alten XPS 12 aus dem Jahr klar unterscheiden zu können. Wie zuvor schon einmal angedeutet wird das Hybrid-Gerät mit einem UHD- beziehungsweise 4K-Display aufwarten, das laut WinFuture ein IGZO-Panel von Sharp verwendet. Alternativ wird es das XPS 12 aber offenbar auch in einer günstigeren Ausführung mit Full HD-Bildschirm (1920 x 1080 Pixel) geben. Wer das neue XPS 12 nicht nur als Windows 10 Tablet, sondern auch als vollwertiges Notebook nutzen möchte, der hat laut WinFuture die Wahl zwischen zwei dafür geeigneten Ansteck-Tastaturen. Zum einen soll es da eine mit 1,3 Millimetern Dicke besonders flache Ausführung geben, zum anderen eine besser ausgestattete, dafür aber dickere und schwere Version. Fast schon erwartungsgemäß sind also am vergangenen Wochenende noch einmal neue Fotos beider Smartphones im Netz aufgetaucht. Die Aufnahmen sind vor allem deshalb interessant, weil sie noch einmal zwei, drei Ausstattungsdetails näher beleuchten können. Zu den grundlegenden technischen Daten von Lumia 950 und Lumia 950 XL muss einen Tag vor dem Microsoft-Event nichts mehr gesagt werden. Technikbegeisterte dürften die wichtigsten Details bereits mehrfach gelesen haben. Eines der frisch veröffentlichten Bilder scheint nun allerdings endgültig belegen zu können, dass zumindest das Lumia 950 XL mit einem austauschbaren 3340-mAh-Akku daherkommen wird. Da Microsoft beim Lumia 950 eine sehr ähnliche Chassis-Konstruktion verwendet, ist beim kleineren Modell ebenfalls ein solcher Wechsel-Akku wahrscheinlich. Im Vergleich zu früheren Premium-Modellen der Lumia-Reihe und diversen aktuellen High-End-Smartphones auf dem Markt könnte sich das als signifikantes Unterscheidungsmerkmal herauskristallisieren. Die weiteren kürzlich veröffentlichten Fotos zeigen sowohl das Lumia 950 als auch des Lumia 950 XL in einem nicht näher erläuterten Prototyp-Stadium. Diesen Aufnahmen nach sind beide kommenden Lumia-Flaggschiffe von Microsoft mit einem Dreifach-LED-Blitz ausgestattet, welches sich positiv auf die Fähigkeiten der Kamera unter schwierigen Lichtverhältnissen auswirken dürfte. In der bisherigen Berichterstattung war dieses Feature stets nur dem 950 XL zugeordnet worden. Es bleibt allerdings noch abzuwarten, ob es der das fortschrittliche Blitzlicht auch in die Verkaufsversion des Lumia 950 geschafft hat. Microsoft wird das Lumia 950 und das Lumia 950 XL aller Voraussicht nach während seiner Veranstaltung morgen Nachmittag (ab 16 Uhr deutscher Zeit) enthüllen, der Marktstart soll aber erst Ende Oktober oder Anfang November erfolgen. Neben den Smartphones werden in New York außerdem mindestens ein neues Surface-Pro-Tablet sowie der rundum verbesserte Fitness-Tracker Microsoft Band 2 erwartet.Motorola hat bekannt gegeben, auf welchen seiner Smartphones in naher Zukunft Android 6.0 Marshmallow laufen wird. Auf der eigenen Webseite verrät die Lenovo-Tochter, dass die neuesten Modelle Moto X Play, Moto X Style und Moto G der 3. Generation (2015), das Moto X der 2. Generation (2014) sowie das Moto G der 2. Generation (mit und ohne LTE) ein entsprechendes Update bekommen werden. Leider gibt es aber noch keinen konkreten Auslieferungstermin für die neue Software von Motorola. Es ist zwar nicht vollkommen ausgeschlossen, dass sich an der genannten Liste unterstützter Smartphones noch etwas ändert, aber sollte kein Gerät mehr dazukommen, so dürften sich vor allem Käufer eines Moto E der 2. Generation enttäuscht zeigen. Dieses Modell wurde erst im Februar 2015 vorgestellt, scheint in Motorolas Update-Planungen schon jetzt aber keine Rolle mehr zu spielen. Das wurde bereits in der letzten Woche vom Internetriesen bekannt gegeben.Neben den diversen Neuerungen, die Android 6.0 mitbringt, wird Motorola eigenen Angaben nach mit Erscheinen des Updates für die erwähnten Geräte auf das Mitliefern von drei der eigenen, bislang vorinstallierten Anwendungen verzichten. Diese sind: Moto Assist, Motorola Migrate und Motorola Connect. Die Begründung des Unternehmens für die Entscheidung leuchtet ein. Laut Motorola hat Google die Funktionalität von Moto Assist und Motorola Migrate direkt in Android 6.0 implementiert, was ihre Existenz überflüssig macht. Im Fall von Motorola Connect, mit dessen Hilfe alle auf dem Smartphone eingehenden SMS-Nachrichten auch auf PC oder Mac im Browser Chrome gelesen werden konnten, sei es hingegen so, dass es dafür im Play Store mittlerweile diverse gute Alternativen gebe und SMS-Nachrichten ohnehin immer mehr an Bedeutung verlieren würden.

Die Mini-Version des neuesten Flaggschiff-Smartphones der Japaner, sprich dem Xperia Z5, wurde zusammen mit dem großen Bruder im Rahmen der IFA 2015 vorgestellt und bietet abgesehen von einem kleineren Display eine sehr ähnliche Ausstattung. Der empfohlene Verkaufspreis des Xperia Z5 Compact liegt hierzulande bei 549 Euro.Sonys Nachfolger für das Xperia Z3 Compact aus dem vergangenen Jahr verfügt wieder über ein 4,6 Zoll großes HD-Display (1280 x 720 Pixel), ist aber zum einen mit dem leistungsstarken Octa-Core-Prozessor Snapdragon 810 von Qualcomm ausgestattet, und wartet zum anderen mit einer brandneuen, deutlich verbesserten Hauptkamera auf der Rückseite auf. Diese besitzt einen 23-Megapixel-Sensor. Die Frontkamera mit ihrem 5-Megapixel-Sensor wurde ebenfalls verbessert. Data that you store in the cloud, not being in your physical possession, can be taken away from you in the blink of an eye. This may be the result of some bureaucratic mix-up—as was apparently the case a few months ago, when the full contents of someone’s Kindle were deleted by Amazon. But that’s of little comfort if you have to engage in an expensive legal battle or media campaign just to prove your innocence and get back the books that you’ve bought and paid for. (In the Kindle episode, during one round of correspondence with Amazon, the customer was snarkily told, “We wish you luck in locating a retailer better able to meet your needs.”) What does it mean to “own” something when it’s stored on someone else’s cloud server and can be wiped, possibly erroneously, with the flip of a switch? This is not ownership in any traditional sense of the word. In all fairness, EULAs often refer to it in other terms, but in most customers’ eyes that’s so much legal mumbo-jumbo, if they read it to begin with. It’s quite likely that your data is safer on the hard drive of your home computer than on a cloud server. If you were a member of a terrorist group or some other miscreant, which would you choose to hack into? A cloud server is a far juicier and more attractive target than a random civilian’s 500GB "Macintosh HD". And given the much greater complexity of cloud storage, and the fact that it’s actually intended to be accessible to pretty much everyone, it’s not completely implausible that someone throwing all their resources at the problem might be able to find a tiny, exploitable hole.Finally, with the cloud you’ve got to trust someone else’s technology. You might laugh at the suggestion that your puny laptop is more sound than the world’s biggest server farms, but I know I’ve had almost no downtime on my MacBook in the past year, while both Apple and Google have experienced multiple cloud outages, affecting countless users. Imagine having your entire music and book collections suddenly vanish into thin air for two, three, six hours. This can mean anything from the minor convenience of being without your tunes for an afternoon to blowing a major presentation or webcast.
Having your music or ebook library compromised for any of the reasons given above is an inconvenience, albeit a potentially huge one. But that inconvenience is dwarfed by the risks you entail if you store your own data in the cloud. You don’t have to be paranoid to worry about having your private correspondence, tax documents, personal photos, or business plans on someone else’s computer — “someone” in this case being a monolithic company that might make any of a thousand mistakes. Already, on my iPhone, I find that using iCloud is much easier than not, making for a somewhat painful opt-out process. Considering what so many large ad-driven firms are known to be doing with cookies, “likes,” online-shopping data, demographic profiles, and “follow” information, there’s no question that the financial incentive to move people to the cloud is there. All of this is almost enough to make me doubt the wisdom of going digital with so much of my media in the first place. It’s reassuring to know that you’d need a van, a team of strong movers, and a good couple of hours to haul away all my LPs. But if all that music were stored in the cloud, a simple invocation of the Unix rm command could make it disappear in a couple of milliseconds. Apple will reportedly upgrade its Macs this year to include "5G WiFi", a technology that will increase wireless connectivity to speeds "in excess of a gigabit per second," according to Cupertino's purported chip partner, Broadcom.This news comes courtesy of The Next Web, which reports that "[s]ources familiar with Apple's plans" have told them that Apple has "struck a deal" with Broadcom to include that company's 5G WiFi (802.11ac) chips in its 2013 Mac lineup – presumably MacBook Pros, iMacs, and Mac minis, and perhaps even Mac Pros, if Apple remembers that it still offers that beefy tower. Broadcom launched its 5G WiFi line at last January's Consumer Electronics Show. At that time, the company introduced the three-stream, 1.3Gbps BCM4360 for PCIe interfaces, and the two stream, 867Mbps BCM4352 and BCM43526, the former for PCIe and the latter for USB. At launch, Broadcom touted not only the increased speed that the not-yet-ratified 802.11ac specification promises, but also the improved power efficiency and range of the emerging standard.Speaking at a Broadcom event last month, Michael Hurlston, Broadcom SVP and general manager of the company's Mobile and Wireless Group, said, "We see almost every major infrastructure customer – retail routers, even some gateways – has adopted 5G Wi-Fi, across the board: Linksys, Netgear, Belkin, D-Link, Buffalo in Japan. Every single player is using our chipset to do that."Hurlston noted that among companies workng with its speedy, power-miserly, and improved-range chips, "Asus is probably the most notable client that has launched with 5G WiFi technology." However, although that Taiwan-based company's G75VM "Ultimate Fighting Machine" was touted upon its release in the middle of last year to be the first 802.11ac laptop, its specs page on the Asus website lists it as having 802.11 b/g/n.
The G75VM's follow-on G-series compatriot, the G75VX, is listed as having "802.11 b/g/n or 802.11ac." The G75VX reviewed last week by Germany's Netbookcheck.com, however, was equipped with an Atheros AR9485WB-EG 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi chip – but Asus does mention on its website that "Product specifications may differ from country to country."Asus, by the way, introduced an 802.11ac dual-band (2.4GHz/5GHz) RT-AC66U router last June, with a dual-band PCE-AC66 PCI-E adapter and USB-AC53 USB adapter scheduled for release soon.The inclusion of 802.11ac in its Macs might put Apple ahead of other major PC makers, but that will – of course – depend upon when those manufacturers get theirs to market. According to Hurlston, we should see more 802.11ac-equipped clients "hitting around CES if not immediately following CES." That show will be held next week in Las Vegas, so the picture should become more clear by then."Perhaps most significantly," Hurlston said, "is smartphones and tablets, and we expect the first phones and tablets certainly to be in very, very early 2013." Dabei soll es laut Herstellerangaben keine Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen Modellvarianten des Premium-Smartphones geben, es erhalten also sowohl Geräte mit und ohne Providerbranding die Aktualisierung. Wie allerdings üblich bei solchen Android-Updates liefert HTC auch in diesem Fall die neue Firmware für das One M9 nicht an alle deutschen Nutzer gleichzeitig, sondern in mehreren Wellen aus. Es kann also je nach Region und Mobilfunkanbieter ein paar Tage dauern bis die Verfügbarkeit der Aktualisierung auf dem Gerät angezeigt wird.Mit dem Update auf Android 5.1.1 Lollipop spendiert HTC Nutzern seines aktuellen Flaggschiffs unter anderem die Möglichkeit, mehrerer Benutzerkonten einzurichten sowie die Farbtemperatur des Displays nach persönlichen Vorlieben einzustellen. Google hat in der aktuellsten Android-Version außerdem eine Reihe von Bugs ausgemerzt und ein paar Optimierungen unter der Haube sowie kleinere Korrekturen an der Benutzeroberfläche vorgenommen. Ob danach noch weitere Geräte des Herstellers bedient werden, ist bislang nicht offiziell bestätigt worden, es ist aber zumindest im Fall von neueren Modellen wie beispielsweise dem One E8 oder dem One M8s wahrscheinlich.Auf Bilder von Metall-Chassis und Frontpanel des vermutlich iPhone 6s genannten kommenden iPhone-Topmodells folgen nun Fotos, die offenbar die komplett zusammengebaute Frontseite, also inklusive Display und zugehörigen Anschlüssen, des Geräts zeigen sollen. Sie wurden von der chinesischen Webseite GeekBar veröffentlicht, wie Cult of Mac informierte. Darüber hinaus haben NowhereElse.fr und uSwitch ein Video in die Finger bekommen, in dem vermeintlich originalgetreue 3D-Modelle sowohl vom iPhone 6s als auch vom größeren iPhone 6s Plus zu sehen sind. Das Video soll Apple an Zubehörhersteller gesendet haben, um diesen die Produktion von Schutzhüllen für die kommenden iPhones zu ermöglichen, und es scheint einen guten Eindruck davon vermitteln zu können, in welchen Punkten sich die Gehäuse der neuen Modelle von denen der alten unterscheiden. Was die 3D-Modelle in dem Video anbelangt, so lassen sich auf den ersten Blick kaum Änderungen gegenüber den derzeit noch aktuellen Topmodellen der iPhone Reihe erkennen. Die Bauhöhe des iPhone 6s wird allerdings mit 7,1 Millimeter angegeben, womit es um 0,2 Millimeter dicker wäre als das iPhone 6. Darüber hinaus fehlt dem gezeigten iPhone 6s das leicht hervorstehende Kamaramodul auf der Rückseite, obwohl erst vor kurzem zu lesen war, das kommende Smartphone werde erneut diese Eigenheit besitzen. Die Darstellung im Videos könnten nun also einfach als Versäumnis der Macher des 3D-Modells gewertet werden, oder aber als ein handfestes Indiz dafür, dass Apple diesen kleinen Design-Makel beim kommenden 4,7-Zoll-Modell doch ausmerzen konnte. Das 3D-Modell des iPhone 6s Plus im Video hingegen besitzt weiterhin die hervorstehende Kameralinse und soll inklusive dieser 7,87 Millimeter dick sein. Die Bauhöhe des 5,5-Zoll-Geräts an sich soll sich auf 7,3 Millimeter belaufen, also ebenfalls 0,2 Millimeter mehr als beim bekannten iPhone 6 Plus. All diese Angaben decken sich im Prinzip mit den bisherigen Berichten, die vorhersagten, dass die neuen iPhone-Modelle minimal dicker sein würden als ihre Vorgänger. Grund dafür soll einerseits eine neue, robustere Aluminiumlegierung sein, aus der die Gehäuse gefertigt werden, andererseits die Verwendung von Touchscreens mit Force Touch Technologie.
Abgesehen von den genannten Modifikationen am Industriedesign sollen iPhone 6s und iPhone 6s Plus aber aussehen wie die bisherigen Topmodelle und auch exakt dieselbe Display-Größe und -Auflösung besitzen. Neuerungen finden sich somit wohl hauptsächlich unter der Oberfläche. Unter anderem sollen die beiden kommenden Apple-Flaggschiffe mit schnellerem und 2 Gigabyte großen Arbeitsspeicher, dem brandneuen Apple A9 Prozessor und einer 13-Megapixel-Kamera aufwarten.Analog zu den letzten Jahren erwartet die Technikpresse die Vorstellung der nächsten iPhone-Generation auch 2015 wieder im September. Dafür sprechen alle zuletzt durchgesickerten Meldungen aus Kreisen der Auftragsfertiger sowie die mittlerweile erhältliche Flut an Bildern diverser Komponenten. Zusätzlich zu den neuen Smartphones soll Apple auf dem kommenden September-Event auch ein neues Apple TV Modell vorstellen. Es hat ein paar Wochen gedauert, aber schlussendlich hat Samsung in der vergangenen Woche bestätigt, was zuvor schon durch die Gerüchteküche schwirrte: Am 13. August wird ein weiteres Unpacked-Event stattfinden, um der Welt ein oder mehrere neue Smartphones zu präsentieren. Insider gehen davon aus, dass die Südkoreaner während dieser Veranstaltung sowohl das Galaxy S6 Edge Plus als auch das Galaxy Note 5 vorstellen werden. Passend zu diesen Spekulationen kursieren nun bereits erste Pressebilder der beiden Smartphones im Netz sowie die vermutlich finalen technischen Spezifikationen des Note 5. Bezüglich der Kamera-Ausstattung des Note 5 führt Blass ebenfalls dieselbe Technik auf, die schon von der S6-Reihe her bekannt ist. Wir sprechen also von einer 16-Megapixel-Hauptkamera an der Rückseite und einer 5-Megapixel-Kamera an der Front. Außerdem soll auch das Note 5 keinen microSD-Kartenslot und mindestens 32 Gigabyte internen Flashspeicher bieten sowie ab Werk mit Android 5.1.1 Lollipop inklusive Samsungs hauseigener TouchWiz-Oberfläche ausgeliefert werden.Alles in allem kann festgehalten werden, dass sich Samsung ganz offensichtlich dazu entschlossen hat, das Galaxy Note 5 und das Galaxy S6 Edge Plus um jeden Preis so früh wie nur irgendwie möglich auf den Markt zu bringen - selbst wenn dafür auf ein paar technische Innovationen verzichtet werden musste. Sogar das eigentlich übliche Event während der IFA in Berlin Anfang September wurde dafür ein paar Wochen vorverlegt. Grund dürfte die ebenfalls im September erwartete Vorstellung einer neuen iPhone-Generation sein. Da das Galaxy S6 und Galaxy S6 Edge nicht den erhofften durchschlagenden Verkaufserfolg brachten, setzt Samsungs nun scheinbar voll und ganz auf die beiden neuen Trümpfe.
Zum Galaxy S6 Edge Plus liegen im Moment leider noch keine finalen Spezifikationen vor, aber den bisherigen Gerüchten nach sollten sie exakt denen des S6 Edge entsprechen, nur dass das links und rechts abgeschrägte Display eine Bilddiagonale von rund 5,7 Zoll besitzt. Spätestens in der nächsten Woche wissen wir es ganz genau.Wie Ende letzter Woche angedeutet, hat Sonys Mobilgerätesparte heute ohne großes Aufhebens neue Produkte präsentiert. Mit dem Xperia C5 Ultra und dem Xperia M5 stellte der japanische Elektronikriese aber nicht nur ein, sondern gleich zwei interessante Android-Smartphones vor. Bei beiden handelt es sich um keine absoluten High-End-Modelle, deren Fokus statt auf besonders leistungsfähigen Chips mehr auf den Aspekten Kameratechnik und Industriedesign liegt.

So weit der bisherige Informationsstand der Gerüchteküche. Nachdem in der Vergangenheit schon die Datenblätter und ein paar unscharfe Fotos dieser vermutlich Lumia 950 und Lumia 950 XL genannten Geräte durchgesickert waren, hat Evan Blass (@evleaks) nun über Twitter neue Bilder veröffentlicht, die wie offizielle Pressefotos von Microsoft aussehen. Darüber informiert The Verge. Sofern diese Fotos authentisch sind lässt sich das von Microsoft für die neuen Premium-Smartphone gewählte Design darauf bestens erkennen. Das Lumia 950 XL alias Cityman ist laut geleakter Spezifikationen mit einem 5,7 Zoll WQHD-Display das größere der beiden kommenden Microsoft-Flaggschiffe. Es soll mit einer 20-Megapixel-Kamera inklusive Dreifach-LED-Blitz auf der Rückseite aufwarten und sich auf Wunsch auch mit einem Surface Pen (Digitalisierstift) bedienen lassen. Das Lumia 950 aka Talkman soll über ein 5,2 Zoll WQHD-Display und dieselbe PureView-Kamera verfügen, letztere allerdings ohne das spezielle Blitzlicht und auch Stift-Eingabe soll beim kleineren Modell nicht möglich sein. Beide Smartphones werden laut vorliegender Informationen einen USB Typ-C Anschluss besitzen und sich via Qi-Standard kabellos aufladen lassen. Ein besonders Merkmal sollte außerdem die Continuum-Funktion von Windows 10 Mobile sein, durch die sich die Geräte an ein großes Display anschließen und wie ein nahezu vollwertiger PC nutzen lassen. Im Folgenden noch einmal die vollständigen Datenblätter der Modelle. Medion will zur IFA 2015, die nächste Woche startet (4. bis 9. September 2015), offenbar ein interessantes neues Android-Smartphone vorstellen. Wie WinFuture berichtet, wurde das Gerät mit der Bezeichnung Medion Life X5004 bereits kurzzeitig von einem deutschen Händler gelistet, der entsprechende Eintrag mittlerweile aber wieder entfernt.Beim Medion Life X5004 handelt es sich den vorliegenden Angaben nach um einen Nachfolger für das Life X5001. Das kommende Smartphone wartet mit 5 Zoll großem Full-HD-IPS-Display und Chassis mit Metallrahmen auf, wird von einem Octa-Core-Prozessor angetrieben und bietet ordentliche Kamera-Technik sowie einen relativ großen Akku. All das sollen Verbraucher schon bald zu Preisen ab rund 250 Euro bekommen. Aber erst mal alles der Reihe nach. Wie beim Motorola Moto X Play setzt Medion bei seinem neuen Life X5004 laut WinFuture auf ein SoC vom Typ Qualcomm Snapdragon 615. Dieses verfügt über insgesamt acht CPU-Kerne, die mit maximal 1,5 Gigahertz Taktfrequenz rechnen, und integriert ein LTE-Modem. Dem Chipsatz zur Seite stehen scheinbar 2 Gigabyte RAM und ein 2600-mAh-Akku. Daten, Filme, Musik und Apps finden auf 16 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher Platz, der sich auf Wunsch via microSD-Kartenslot zusätzlich erweitern lässt. Eventuell wird es vom X5004 auch Modellvarianten mit mehr RAM und internem Speicher geben, aber verlässliche Infos gibt es diesbezüglich nicht.
Zu den weiteren durchgesickerten Ausstattungsmerkmalen des kommenden Medion-Smartphones gehören eine 13-Megapixel-Hauptkamera mit Autofokus und Blitzlicht auf der Rückseite sowie eine 5-Megapixel-Frontkamera. Zur drahtlosen Kommunikation werden neben LTE WLAN nach 802.11 b/g/n und Bluetooth 4.0 geboten. Außerdem soll das Gerät nur 140 Gramm wiegen und der Aluminium-Rahmen des Gehäuses nur 6,9 Millimeter dick sein. Als Betriebssystem kommt Android 5.0 Lollipop zum Einsatz, das weitgehend unverändert und nur um einige vom Hersteller ausgewählte Apps ergänzt sein soll.Es gibt im Augenblick leider noch keine Hinweise darauf, wann genau Medion das Life X5004 vorstellen will. Es ist aber davon auszugehen, dass die entsprechende Ankündigung unmittelbar vor oder genau zum offiziellen Start der IFA 2015 erfolgen wird. Der Preis für das beschriebene Modell mit 2 Gigabyte RAM und 16 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher soll dann bei attraktiven 249 Euro liegen. Microsoft hat Window 10 vor genau vier Wochen zum Download freigegeben. Diese Mini-Jubiläum nimmt der Softwareriese jetzt zum Anlass, um aktuelle Zahlen zur Adoptionsrate des neuen Desktop-Betriebssystems vorzulegen. Nachdem Windows 10 innerhalb von 24 Stunden nach dem Launch auf 14 Millionen Geräten lief, ist dieser Wert im Laufe eines Monats mittlerweile auf beachtliche 75 Millionen angestiegen.Es erübrigt sich fast, die Adoptionsrate von Windows 10 an dieser Stelle als rasant zu bezeichnen. Allerdings muss diesbezüglich auch erwähnt werden, dass die treibende Kraft hinter der Beliebtheit des Betriebssystems natürlich Microsofts auf ein Jahr befristetes kostenloses Upgrade-Angebot für alle Nutzer von Windows 7 und Windows 8/8.1 ist. Aufgrund des kostenlosen Upgrade-Angebots ist es zwar nicht wirklich fair, die Adoptionsrate von Windows 10 mit der von Windows 8 zu vergleichen, aber zur besseren Einordnung der von Microsoft genannten Zahlen ist es dennoch nützlich. Im ersten Monat nach dem Marktstart hatte Microsoft 40 Millionen Lizenzen von Windows 8 „verkauft“. Um 100 Millionen Lizenzen von Windows 8 unter die Leute zu bringen, brauchte Microsoft sechs Monate. Dank der unkomplizierten Upgrade-Möglichkeit sollte Windows 10 diese Marke schon bald überschritten haben.Microsoft rollt den Windows 10 Download eigenen Angaben nach weiter für alle Interessenten in Wellen aus. Es gibt folglich nach wie vor zahlreiche Nutzer auf der Welt, die sich für das Upgrade kürzlich registriert haben oder erst noch registrieren wollen. Wer das Upgrade für sich reserviert hat, muss unseren eigenen Erfahrungen mittlerweile nicht mehr lange auf den Windows 10 Download warten. Dank eines durchgesickerten Screenshots von einer Microsoft-Intranet-Seite ist nun wahrscheinlich das Veröffentlichungsdatum von Office 2016 für Windows bekannt. Die finale Fassung der neuesten Ausgabe des bekannten Bürosoftwarepakets wird demnach am 22. September 2015 erscheinen. Wer nicht bis dahin warten möchte, der kann die seit Mai erhältlichen Vorschauversionen von Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint und Word 2016 für Windows nach wie vor kostenlos testen.Office 2016 gibt es seit Juli bereits als finale Mac Download Version für Office 365 Abonnenten. Die Mac-Edition hat viel mit der kommenden Windows-Ausgabe gemein. Microsoft hatte es sich bei der Entwicklung der neuen Office-Editionen zum erklärten Ziel gemacht, das Design Plattform-übergreifend – also für Windows, OS X und die Mobile-Apps - konsistent zu halten. Für Windows-Nutzer, die bereits mit Office 2013 gearbeitet haben, ist Office 2016 als inkrementelles Update zu bezeichnen. Die wichtigsten Neuerungen abgesehen von der dezent anders gestalteten Oberfläche sind verbesserte Möglichkeiten, Dokumente gemeinsam im Team zu bearbeiten sowie Daten zu analysieren, eine noch engerer Cloud-Anbindung sowie ein überarbeiteter Hilfe-Assistent.
Für die Nutzer, denen der neue Standard-Look von Office 2016 mit farbiger Titelleiste nicht gefällt, oder die sich vielleicht ein besser an die Oberfläche von Windows 10 angepasstes Design wünschen, hat Microsoft auch ein alternativ wählbares dunkles Thema implementiert. Outlook 2016 kommt außerdem mit einer Reihe von Verbesserungen daher, zu denen etwa ein geringer Speicherbedarf, schnellere E-Mail-Übertragung und eine intelligentere Suche gehören sollen.Microsoft selbst hat sich offiziell noch nicht dazu geäußert, ob der 22. September tatsächlich den offiziellen Marktstart von Office 2016 für Windows markiert. Die US-Publikation The Verge will allerdings direkt aus Microsoft-Kreisen erfahren haben, dass der Softwareriese intern gerade eine de facto fertige Version des neuen Office-Pakets testet. Falls also in letzter Sekunde keine unvorhergesehenen Probleme mehr auftreten, sollte der genannte Veröffentlichungstermin zutreffend sein. Offizielle Preisangaben zu Office 2016 für Windows liegen im Moment noch nicht vor. Sie dürften aber im Vergleich zu den aktuellen Angeboten weitgehend unverändert ausfallen. Sony wird auf der Ende nächster Woche beginnenden IFA 2015 (4. bis 9. September) vertreten sein und neue Produkte präsentieren. So viel ist seit ein paar Wochen bekannt. Was der japanische Elektronikriese in Berlin zeigen wird, dazu gab es bislang aber noch kein offizielles Statement. Mittlerweile sieht die Lage allerdings anders aus, da Sony nun über Twitter ganz unverhohlen die Vorstellung eines neuen Smartphones ankündigt. Für Sony ist es in den letzten Jahren zur Tradition geworden, im Rahmen der Berliner Messe im September neue Mobilgeräte anzukündigen. Das Teaser-Bild, welches vom Hersteller über Twitter veröffentlicht wurde zeigt dementsprechend das Brandenburger Tor als Wahrzeichen der Landeshauptstadt sowie dezent unscharf ein Smartphone. Die Worte, die das Bild begleiten, - „Get ready for a smartphone with greater focus. All will become clear on 02.09.2015.“ - machen außerdem deutlich, dass Sony scheinbar besonders stolz auf die Kameratechnik beziehungsweise die schnelle Fokus-Funktion seines neuen Flaggschiff-Modells ist, und dieses auf einem Event am 2. September, also noch vor dem offiziellen Auftakt der IFA 2015, enthüllt werden soll.

Den Angaben eines Insiders nach könnten sich die Südkoreaner beim nächsten kommenden Smartphone-Topmodell wieder dem Chiphersteller Qualcomm als Partner zuwenden und dessen nächsten High-End-Prozessor, den Snapdragon 820, verwenden.Wie schon bei früheren Galaxy-S-Generationen dürfte der Snapdragon 820 höchstwahrscheinlich nicht in allen Modellvarianten des Galaxy S7 zum Einsatz kommen, da Samsung in Varianten für den Heimatmarkt Südkorea und andere Teile Asiens traditionell gerne die eigene Prozessor-Familie Exynos in seinen Flaggschiffen verbaut. Nichtsdestotrotz wäre es für Qualcomm ein wichtiger Schritt, um die eigenen Umsätze wieder steigern zu können, nachdem das Jahr 2015 bislang als Reinfall für den US-Chipspezialisten bezeichnet werden muss. Aufgrund von Verzögerungen bei der Auslieferung des derzeitigen High-End-SoCs von Qualcomm, dem Snapdragon 810, sowie - sehr wahrscheinlich - der vielfach bestätigten problematischen Hitzeentwicklung des Chipsatzes hatte sich Samsung schon im Frühjahr 2015 dafür entschieden, bei der Galaxy S6 Familie komplett auf den eigenen Exynos 7420 zu setzen. Für Qualcomm wirkte sich unter anderem diese Entscheidung sehr negativ auf die laufenden Geschäfte aus.Den unbestätigten Angaben des Insiders nach befindet sich Samsung derzeit allerdings erst dabei,den Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 zu evaluieren. Es ist daher noch nicht sicher, ob der Prozessor schlussendlich auch im finalen Produkt stecken wird. Außerdem ist dem geleakten Dokument zu entnehmen, dass Samsung das Galaxy S7 offenbar intern mit dem Codenamen „Jungfrau“ bezeichnet und auch bereits mit den Anpassungsarbeiten der nächsten großen Android-Version -derzeit nur als Android M bekannt -begonnen hat. All diese Infos zusammengenommen und den Zeitpunkt, zu dem sie durchgesickert sind, mit eingerechnet, lassen darauf hoffen, dass wir ein Samsung Galaxy S7 früher sehen könnten als das die meisten Branchenbeobachtet erwarten würden. Nach den ersten Berichten über die nächste Generation von Apples iPad mini vor wenigen Wochen sind nun weitere aussagekräftige Details ans Licht gekommen. Über den Twitter-Account @onleaks wurde ein Video veröffentlicht, in dem ein 3D-Modell des eventuell iPad mini 4 genannten Tablets zu sehen ist, bei dem sich um eine exakte Replikation handeln soll. Neben der Dicke wird das iPad mini 4 laut dem 3D-Modell noch ein äußeres Merkmal des iPad Air 2 erben. So hat Apple offenbar beim kommenden 7,9-Zoll-Tablet den Schalter für die Rotationssperre beziehungsweise Stummschaltung ebenso wegrationalisiert wie beim aktuellen 9,7-Zoll-Modell.Sofern die schon etwas länger im Netz kursieren Spekulationen zum iPad mini 4 korrekt sind, wofür auch die vom Video beschriebenen Details sprechen, wird das kompakte Tablet mit einer im Vergleich zum Vorgänger deutlich verbesserten Kamera und einem vollständig laminierten Display aufwarten. Zu den weiteren Ausstattungsmerkmalen könnten unter anderem ein Prozessor der Apple A8 Familie, bis zu 2 Gigabyte RAM und bis zu 128 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher gehören.Welche Neuerungen sich Apple wirklich für das iPad mini beziehungsweise die gesamte iPad-Line-up in den vergangenen Monaten hat einfallen lassen, könnten wir 2015 schon früher erfahren als in den letzten Jahren. Jüngsten Gerüchten nach sollen die Kalifornier neue iPads bereits am 9, September vorstellen, neben der nächsten iPhone-Generation und einem neuen Apple TV Modell.
Nvidia bereitet derzeit offenbar die Markteinführung einer neuen High-End-Grafikkarte für Notebooks vor. Wie die Kollegen von Notebookcheck unter Berufung auf Insider-Informationen berichten, soll diese GeForce-GPU das aktuelle Topmodell im Mobil-Bereich, die GeForce GTX 980M, klar hinter sich lassen und könnte eventuell sogar die Leistung von zwei GTX 980M im SLI-Verbund erreichen.Bezüglich der offiziellen Bezeichnung von Nvidias neuem Grafikmonster für Notebooks tappt die Gerüchteküche allerdings noch weitgehend im Dunkel. Nachdem die GPU zuvor schon einmal kurz als GTX 990M im Netz auftauchte, spricht Notebookcheck jetzt schlicht und einfach von der GTX 980 für Notebooks. Ob diese Angabe korrekt ist, lässt sich im Augenblick nicht klären, verwunderlich wäre der Name allerdings in mehrerlei Hinsicht. Gewichtigste Gegenargumente sind wohl, dass es eine GTX 980 bereits als Grafik-Lösung für Desktop-PCs gibt und dass Nvidia mit einem solchen Vorgehen gewissermaßen aus heiterem Himmel das gesamte und über Jahre hinweg etablierte Namensschema seiner GPU-Familie über den Haufen werfen würde. Ganz gleich welche offizielle Bezeichnung die Super-GPU für Notebooks nun letztendlich trägt, fest zu stehen scheint, dass sie sehr leistungsstark sein wird und bei Nvidia unter dem Codenamen N16E-GXX entwickelt wurde. Laut den vorliegenden Infos soll die N16E-GXX GPU wie auch die GeForce GTX 980M auf dem GM204-Chip mit Maxwell Architektur basieren, allerdings über eine variabel konfigurierbare TDP (Thermal Design Power) zwischen 100 bis 185(+) Watt verfügen.Auf diese Weise könnten Notebook-Hersteller bei Bedarf besonders voluminöse Gaming-Notebooks mit starkem Kühlsystem entwerfen, in denen die N16E-GXX dann ihre ganze Leistungsfähigkeit entfalten darf. Aufgrund des damit einhergehenden hohen Strombedarfs und der für diese Leistung benötigten Kühlung wird die kommende Notebook-GPU aber höchstwahrscheinlich nur fest verlötet auf dem Mainboard zu bekommen sein. Was die oben erwähnte Leistungsfähigkeit der neuen N16E-GXX GPU im direkten Vergleich mit zwei GTX 980M im SLI-Verbund betrifft, ist vorerst wohl noch Skepsis angebracht. Notebookcheck geht aber davon aus, dass sich die Performance-Werte aufgrund der dynamisch anpassbaren TDP des N16E-GXX zumindest theoretisch - und bei entsprechender Kühlung - erreichen lassen müssten. Die Begründung für diese These: Eine aktuell erhältliche Desktop-Grafikkarte vom Typ GeForce GTX 980 wartet mit einer TDP von 165 Watt auf und erreicht damit rund 76 Prozent der Leistung eines GTX 980M SLI-Gespanns. Bei geeignet hohen Taktraten und damit einhergehend nochmals erhöhter TDP könnte die N16E-GXX also vermutlich die kolportierte Leistung erbringen. Diese Grafik-Performance für den Notebook-Formfaktor wird aber natürlich ihren Preis haben. Vorausgesetzt die Insider-Angaben sind verlässlich sollte die neue N16E-GXX GPU rund das Doppelte einer GTX 980M kosten. In Anbetracht der Preise, die derzeit für Gaming-Notebooks mit GTX 980M verlangt werden, also sicherlich ein kleines Vermögen. Da der Marktstart von Nvidias mobiler Super-GPU Ende September erfolgen soll, werden wir diesbezüglich wohl bald genau Bescheid wissen.Was sich anhand von durchgesickerten Dokumenten schon vor ein paar Wochen abzeichnete hat Intel nun offiziell bestätigt: Die bislang nur für den Einsatz in Desktop-PCs, Workstations und Server konzipierte Prozessor-Familie Xeon wird demnächst auch ihren Weg in Notebooks finden. Die erste Xeon-Reihe für Laptops trägt die Bezeichnung Xeon E3-1500M v5, basiert auf der brandneuen Skylake-Mikroarchitektur und soll ab Herbst 2015 in ersten im Handel erhältlichen Geräten zum Einsatz kommen.
Um den professionellen Ansprüchen zu genügen, die Kunden an Prozessoren der Xeon-Familie stellen, soll natürlich auch die neue Xeon-Reihe E3-1500M für Notebooks hohe Performance und High-End-Funktionen bieten, allerdings zugeschnitten auf den Einsatz in einem von Energieeffizienz bestimmten Umfeld. So unterstützten die CPUs beispielsweise ECC-Arbeitsspeicher und die Intel vPro Technologie. Darüber hinaus bringt Intels kommende professionelle Mobil-Plattform neue Features wie Thunderbolt 3 oder USB Typ-C mit und wer das möchte, der kann allein mit der integrierten GPU der Prozessoren zwei 4K-Displays gleichzeitig befeuern.Intel hält sich derzeit noch bedeckt, was die genauen technischen Details und weitere Features der neuen Xeon E3-1500M Prozessoren für Notebooks betrifft. Das ist sicherlich dem Umstand geschuldet, dass das Unternehmen im Moment ganz allgemein noch nicht über die Mobil-Prozessoren der Skylake-Generation spricht. Vor wenigen Tagen wurden aber schon mal die ersten beiden Desktop-CPUs der nunmehr sechsten Core-Generation auf dem Markt eingeführt. Wie oben schon kurz erwähnt, sollen diverse Skylake-Modelle für den Notebook-Markt im Herbst dieses Jahres folgen. Die Entscheidung Intels, Xeon-Prozessoren für Notebooks herauszubringen, begründet sich vor allem durch die zunehmende Popularität von Mobil-Workstations. Der Chipgigant gibt in seiner Pressemitteilung an, dass der Markt für Mobil-Workstations laut den Marktforschern von IDC auch im vergangenen Quartal wieder im Vergleich zum entsprechenden Vorjahresquartal gewachsen ist. Somit ist dieses Marktsegment eines der wenigen, in dem die Absatzzahlen von Windows-PCs über mehrere Quartale hinweg nicht ab-, sondern zunahmen. Für Intel macht es also Sinn, verstärkt auf CPUs für Profis im Kreativbereich oder Ingenieurswesen zu setzen, die von Zuhause aus oder unterwegs ihre Arbeit erledigen wollen beziehungsweise müssen.

CES 2013 To hear Intel tell it, the days of the good ol' laptop are numbered, and the future belongs to touch-enabled convertibles – laptops that lead a double life as both clamshells and tablets."We fundamentally believe that there's a convergence happening between what traditionally have been notebook computing and tablet computing, and a new range – or a new segment – that we've called the 'Ultrabook Convertible and Detachable'," the head of Intel's PC Client Group, Kirk Skaugen, told his audience of footsore journos during a press event at CES 2013 in Las Vegas on Monday."Intel Corporation has rapidly been modifying its product line to address this segment," he said, continuing a theme that he introduced at last September's Intel Developer Forum (IDF), when he first rolled out Intel's push towards convertibles and detachables.Of course, to push Intel chips down into the tablet market – whether that tablet is a standalone device or coupled to a keyboard in some way – required some fast footwork when it came to processor power requirements. At that IDF event, Skaugen reminded us, Intel had promised that with its 4th Generation Core processor line, code-named "Haswell" and scheduled to appear later this year, that power requirements would dip to 10 watts. Voilà – you have a 10-millimeter, 850-gram, Core i5 or i7 tablet with what he claimed would provide up to 10 hours of battery life.Much ink has been spilled in the past year about Intel being late – too late, some have said – into the low-power processor market. And those ink-spillers have been correct: it's been a long, tortured path for Intel as it has struggled to get its processors anywhere near in line with the lower-performing but decidedly more power-miserly ARM-based processors from world+dog.
Whether the company's focus on touch-enabled convertible and detachable Ultrabooks will induce enough OEMs – to say nothing of users – to adopt first the new seven-watt 3rd Generation Core processors then the 4th Generation Core Haswell processors later this year remains to be seen. Also uncertain is whether the neither-fish-nor-fowl convertibles and detachables will find market-share love.But to be fair, you gotta give Intel engineers an "A" for effort – even as you give the company's executive team an "F" for vision. Odds are there's a lot of midnight oil being burnt in Santa Clara and Hillsboro these days. A slightly pricier option comes from Dell’s new S-series of high-quality, low-cost displays. This 24in model offers hidden illuminated touch-sensitive controls and sleek edge-to-edge glass, lending it the appearance of a giant iPad floating in mid-air. Internally, it features an MVA panel which delivers wide viewing angles and accurate colour. It has no speakers, but there’s an audio output so you can pass sound from the HDMI input through to an external set. The high-gloss screen is more about looks than day-to-day productivity, but if you can keep reflections at bay you’ll enjoy some really deep blacks and punchy contrast. Apple claims that the AirPods, in their current incarnation, get five hours of charge. That's pretty good for teeny-tiny earbuds, but not great in a future where Apple wants to make them indispensable accessories for everyday living. That's going to make this wireless future an even tougher sell, beyond the price and beyond the lack of a traditional headphone jack on the iPhone 7.I usually shy away from Windows 8 laptops. The interface isn't as natural as what you'd find with OS X and Windows 7. Many of them have displays that twist around and fold, which I don't find much use for.But Dell's newest XPS 13 laptop is so excellent it persuaded me to give up my personal MacBook for Windows 8 for a week.The XPS 13 is light, gorgeous, and works well. If you want a Windows machine that's just as good, and perhaps better than, the MacBook Air, this is the laptop to buy.The XPS 13 comes in a few different configurations. My review unit comes with a 3,200 x 1,800 resolution touch screen, 256GB of solid state storage, 8GB of memory, and a Core i5 Intel processor for $1,399. If you wanted to go for the non-touch screen option with all of the same specifications, it would cost $200 less than a 13-inch MacBook Air with the same storage, memory, and processor. You can get an entry level model without a touchscreen, a 1080p display, 128GB of storage, 4GB of memory, and a Core i3 processor for $799.No matter what configuration you choose, you'll probably be impressed with the XPS 13's screen. Dell's latest 13-inch laptop uses what it describes as an "infinity display," meaning the screen itself stretches almost completely from edge-to-edge. There's barely any bezel at all — which allows Dell to make a laptop that's the same size as a typical 11-inch notebook, but has a 13-inch screen.The so-called "infinity display" looks gorgeous too; colors really pop and images look bold. The screen itself is glossy, which I liked, but some may find distracting since it produces a bit of glare. It wasn't overwhelming though, and the glossy texture is necessary to make swiping the touchscreen easy and comfortable.The one problem I had with the screen, however, was that it seemed rather dim. Whenever I used it I had to keep the brightness cranked all the way up or at least above halfway to see content on the display easily. Even though the XPS 13 is a bit cheaper than the MacBook Air, it's one of the few Windows laptops that can actually stand up to Apple's in terms of design. The lid and underside of the laptop are made of brushed aluminum, giving it a polished and premium look. When you open it up, you'll notice the keyboard deck is coated with a soft carbon fiber material, which makes it comfortable to rest your wrists as you type.Generally speaking, the keyboard is sturdy enough to make typing easy and enjoyable. But, if you're being picky like me, you'll notice the keyboard flexes a little bit when you press down on it. It's a minor complaint, but one worth noting.During normal use, the Dell PS 13 performed smoothly and quickly. Apps usually launched within two to three seconds, and the computer powered on in about 12 seconds. And the Dell XPS 13 is powerful too. Since it runs on Intel's newest processors, it boots up quickly and offers long battery life. With mixed usage, which included browsing the web, doing light work in Google Drive, and streaming content from Netflix, the laptop lasted for about nine hours. That's impressive, especially since I had to leave the display brightness at its highest setting during the majority of the time I used it.
There are few negative things to be said about Dell's new laptop. The glossy screen can sometimes produce glare, and the keyboard could be better. That's about it.So if you're in the market for a new Windows laptop, the XPS 13 is one of the best you can buy. If you want a 13-inch screen, this is the smallest laptop you'll find with a display of that size. The borderless screen, lightweight design, and aluminum build make one of the sexiest laptops out there — it's one of the only Windows laptops that can stand up to the MacBook Air in terms of sheer looks.A patent published on Thursday shows that Apple may be experimenting with fiber optic cables woven into regular fabrics to act as a simple way to show basic information. Apple lists "electronic wrist watches" (potentially the Apple Watch) as a device that could incorporate such technology. It could be used in an Apple Watch strap to show basic information to glance at without needing to wake the main display. Or you can be notified about certain events with color-coded light alerts.The patent also describes how this kind of secondary display could be used on other Apple products, like MacBook laptops, iPhones, and iPads to show you quick, glanceable information. The idea is similar to HTC's Dot View case for the HTC One M9 that lets light from the screen pass through holes in the case to see glanceable information. Windows laptops come in all different colors, shapes, sizes, and prices, while Apple doesn’t really offer a budget option for its customers.Spending $500 or less on a laptop is usually considered cheap, but HP’s new Stream laptop is so inexpensive its price is almost unheard of.The Windows 8-powered Stream starts at $199 — which is less than half of what you’d usually pay for a computer of its size.That’s because Windows computers aren’t just competing against Macs anymore. Over the past several years, laptop manufacturers have been working with Google to release a newer type of computer called the Chromebook.Unlike Windows or Mac laptops, Chromebooks are primarily designed to work with an Internet connection, and the offline experience is still limited. You can’t run desktop programs like iTunes or Skype since only a select few services work offline.They’re incredibly cheap (usually in the $200-$380 range), and that’s why they’ve become so appealing — especially in classrooms. Microsoft is now trying to compete against Chromebooks with Windows computers like the Stream, which offer the full benefit of Windows at a similar price point.
But does a $200 computer work well enough to justify the purchase, or is it worth holding out for a more powerful machine? My general take is that the Stream is more than capable of handling basic tasks like a Chromebook can, but you should seriously consider what you use your laptop for the most.HP offers a few versions of the Stream — one with an 11-inch screen that starts at $199, one with a 13.3-inch screen that starts at $229, and another with a bigger 14-inch display that starts at $299. On all models, you get a 1366 x 768 resolution screen, 2GB of memory, Windows 8.1, and an Intel Celeron processor. You also get a one-year subscription to Microsoft Office 365 for free.If you primarily use the internet and can get by without any desktop programs, go for the Chromebook. It loads web pages extremely fast, which was one of the few drawbacks I noticed with the HP Stream. For a super cheap computer, the Stream ran pretty smoothly any booted up quickly (only 9 seconds!). But web pages loaded noticeably slow on both my home and work Wi-Fi networks, which are usually both fairly fast. The HP Stream isn’t the sexiest-looking gadget, but it’s damn light, which is important if you frequently commute with your laptop or take it to class. I traveled with the HP Stream in my purse on the subway and it never weighed my shoulder down. In fact, I almost forgot I even had a computer in my bag.The deep blue color was attractive enough, but the plasticky, two-toned blue keyboard deck made it feel a bit like a toy. Again, this is a laptop that’s about a quarter of the price of something like the MacBook Air, so I wasn’t expecting the most premium design.The keyboard itself was surprising sturdy. Although the individual keys felt a bit cheap, I didn’t experience that flexy feeling I’ve dealt with previously when using cheap laptops. With some inexpensive notebooks, pushing down on the keyboard repeatedly or too hard will cause it to slightly sink in. This never happened with the Stream, though, which is impressive.The touchpad wasn’t as fluid as I had hoped, though. It felt a bit sticky as I moved the mouse pointer around the screen. |
