We have to look,” says Kevin Petersen, AT&T’s SVP of wireless product marketing.I don’t know if these thoughts are code for “5G is expensive and we need to defray the cost,” whether these carriers just haven’t figured out pricing yet, or whether they don’t want to tip their hands early, but we’re getting down to the wire — especially for AT&T’s promised end-of-2018 launch. Lastly, I thought it was especially weird that Verizon wouldn’t talk about what kind of speeds we can expect from 5G, considering Verizon said months ago that its 5G Moto Mod would produce download speeds of up to 5Gbps, and AT&T recently told us we should see at least gigabit speeds. When I went back to look at Motorola’s 5G Mod website, I noticed a discrepancy: the fine print at the very bottom of the page says that we should expect peak download speeds of more like 300–500Mbps. That’s still fast, but it’s not really 5G. I pinged Verizon last night to ask about that, and I’ll let you know what I hear.Amon confirmed to The Verge that it’s where Qualcomm will launch its next flagship Snapdragon processor for 5G devices, and he also namedropped a separate “Snapdragon 1000” chip for always-connected ARM-powered PCs — a processor rumored to finally be powerful enough to challenge Intel’s Y and U-series CPUs in ultrathin laptops and 2-in-1s. We won’t get details until Tuesday, but Maui is an important moment for Qualcomm. Apple seems to be getting stronger every year, while Intel is definitely not. Apple’s own processors are getting so fast, so quickly, that an iPad Pro could arguably beat a new Intel-powered MacBook in raw speed, and the rumors that the Mac will ditch Intel chips for Apple’s own ARM processors are starting to make an awful lot of sense.snapdragon
Amon says the “Snapdragon 1000” will support more memory, which is a big deal all by itself — the Galaxy Book 2’s 4GB didn’t feel like enough for Windows.But Qualcomm’s president also hints that Maui won’t be all about CPU performance, because in his view, 5G connectivity makes it less important how much computing power you can fit in your pocket or shoulder bag, and because more and more key smartphone features (machine learning, image processing, graphics, etc.) are no longer primarily handled by the CPU. “Apple has achieved remarkable single-threaded CPU performance,” he says, “but ask yourself if the most important thing on a processor is the single-threaded CPU performance?” There’s some truth to that, but the idea that 5G is suddenly going to turn your ARM-powered mobile chip into a supercomputer is quite a stretch — and it’s hype we’ve heard before. LTE was also supposed to provide low enough latency for on-demand processing, but splitting a processor load between a local device and a remote server has proven a pretty tough business so far. (The first generation of cloud gaming companies got absorbed by Sony instead of prospering on their own, and Sony’s service recently added an option to just Clearly there’s going to be a lot of hype to unpack in Maui, both in terms of what 5G can actually deliver — when, where, how much — and in terms of whether Qualcomm’s new processors will make the first wave of 5G devices feel like a huge upgrade instead of a beta test for people with money to burn. I fondly remember bragging about the blazing speeds I saw with my first 4G LTE dongle, but the early phones were a bit of a mess at launch.But there may just be enough new tech here to justify a bit of hype. I light up every time I imagine a wireless connection that could totally wipe the floor with the landline service I have at home. That’s the feeling that Qualcomm, Verizon, and AT&T are trying to foster. Now they just have to prove they can make it real. Update, December 3rd: Verizon has now confirmed it will show a Samsung proof of concept device at the event, as well as demo its Moto Z3 with 5G Moto Mod. That means we’ll be seeing a 5G-enabled phone, not just a 5G mobile hotspot, in Maui this week.Microsoft loves bashing the iPad for its Surface commercials. It first started back in 2013 in the days of Windows 8 tablets, and revived its efforts a couple of years ago to focus on the iPad Pro. Even Macs haven’t escaped the attention of Microsoft’s quirky ads. While Apple is spreading heartwarming holiday charm this year and Microsoft’s official holiday ad focuses on inclusivity, a new Surface holiday ad allows Microsoft to more subtly bash the iPad.
Microsoft’s new Surface commercial is a musical adaption of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”:“Grandma, don’t run out and buy an iPad. It was fine when I was six, but now I’m 10. My dreams are a big so I need a real computer.”Microsoft, or well, a 10-year-old girl in the commercial, is obviously referring to Apple’s ongoing ads to position the iPad Pro as a computer and competitor to a laptop. Apple first started this by asking “what’s a computer?” for an iPad ad, and more recently tried to convince us that tablets are the future of computing. Defenders of laptops and advocates of tablets have been debating computers vs. tablets for eight years, during which time Apple has slowly evolved its iPad to include a keyboard (like a laptop) and a stylus (like a Surface). Qualcomm obviously has a vested interest in making people believe that 5G is actually meaningfully better than the cell connections we already have now. “You’re not going to change your phone unless the battery life is higher, the form factor is attractive, and you need companies that can actually deliver the performance,” he says. (Early LTE devices were notoriously thick and drained batteries quickly.)That’s why, even out of the gate, he says 5G will be dramatically faster and dramatically more responsive, to the point that bandwidth-sapping uses like streaming video will feel effortless. “Today you stream music everywhere. You don’t download music anymore; even if you have low coverage, you have enough quality to stream music. 5G will do that for video,” Amon says, before moving on to fancier, further-out predictions like unlimited storage and on-demand processing power from the cloud that can, he imagines, virtually cram the power of a Magic Leap-like augmented reality headset into a normal pair of glasses.High-flying promises of fast internet and cloud connections are nothing new, but historically they have always crashed into the reality of actual network performance that doesn’t live up to them. And the way that Qualcomm, AT&T, Verizon, and others hope to achieve the performance out of the gate may mean a slightly different, spottier network than the ones we’re used to right now. AT&T and Verizon both say they’re exclusively rolling out millimeter wave (mmWave) radios, which inherently provide far more bandwidth and capacity than today’s networks. But at 39GHz and 28GHz, those millimeter wave signals also don’t travel as far or penetrate buildings as easily as conventional cellular. That means you’ll probably drop down to LTE speeds when you transition indoors, and in order to cover the same area as today’s LTE cell towers, carriers will need to provide many more smaller cell sites. AT&T says it’s focusing on outdoor cells first, but is also looking at indoor ones for public venues like stadiums and concert halls.5G NR does have a solve for wider coverage, too: “sub-6” spectrum, meaning radio frequencies below 6GHz, which include everything from traditional Wi-Fi (2.4GHz, 5GHz) down to the decently building-penetrating 700MHz frequency that AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon use for a large portion of their LTE networks today. (T-Mobile recently added some 600MHz as well.)
But AT&T and Verizon say they aren’t prioritizing sub-6 5G quite yet, partly because the carriers don’t have enough spectrum at lower frequencies to wow with speed. “With a 20MHz band of 600MHz [spectrum], you’re not going to get that lift. You’d have to ask yourself what’s different, what does 5G really mean,” says Verizon’s Palmer.It also might be partially because sub-6 smartphone chips may not be ready yet, at least for the particular spectrum pairings that US carriers currently use. “The FDD, which is what the bulk of operators have ... the silicon to support that FDD spectrum doesn’t become available until later in 2019,” says Gordon Mansfield, AT&T’s VP of converged access and device technology. The upshot? Instead of promising to launch their 5G NR networks in entire cities at once, AT&T has only committed to bringing 5G to unspecified “parts” of the 19 locations it’s named so far, and the fastest forms of 5G may never cover every person. “Our ambition is large... that doesn’t mean we’re going to blanket every corner of the country with millimeter wave,” says Palmer, adding that she will “most likely” start in areas with the most traffic and demand, too. T-Mobile says it will have a nationwide 5G network in 2020, but it's not clear how much of that will be millimeter wave and how much sub-6. It's using both.
Plus, both AT&T and Verizon expect current LTE networks to get faster as 5G rolls out — partly because people moving to 5G will free up room on the LTE networks, partly because of all the underlying infrastructure improvements the carriers are making to ensure their 5G networks will be faster, and partly because we still haven’t reached the limit of what LTE can do. AT&T even launched a fake 5G network called “5G Evolution” last year to show off how existing LTE Advanced and LTE Advanced Pro techniques could reach theoretical download speeds of 400Mbps. (Other carriers rolled out those techniques even earlier, though.)TL;DR: not all 5G will be equal, the faster flavor of 5G will come first but it’ll be spotty, and the rest of the time you’ll probably be surfing on LTE. But at least it could be faster LTE than you’re getting today. When it comes to cell phone plans, 2018 is the year the word “unlimited” lost all meaning, as marketers realized they could twist it however they like. Verizon now has three unlimited plans! And every unlimited plan has limits.So consider me a wee bit concerned that on the eve of AT&T’s launch, neither AT&T nor Verizon was willing to talk about how much, how often, how fast, nor answer what’s probably the most burning question: whether we should expect to pay more, less, or the same for 5G connectivity. (Because 5G’s inevitable, right? You’ll be paying for it sooner or later.)For that matter, neither carrier would even tell me whether today’s data caps might get larger to account for the tremendous amount of data we’ll supposedly be using on 5G. Qualcomm’s third annual Snapdragon Technology Summit is happening in Maui today, and it promises to be the first — and last — major public debut of blazing-fast 5G before the new cellular standard launches in the US for real. And while inviting 330 people to a tropical island setting might seem frivolous, there’s some serious money and technology at stake.You see, AT&T is promising to launch real 5G NR cellular in 12 cities by the end of 2018, mere weeks from today. But despite that fact — and a variety of promises, milestones, and one-off demonstrations from other carriers which plan to launch as soon as early 2019 — we still don’t have a clear idea of what 5G will actually offer right away. Few journalists have even so much as touched a 5G device.
That will change this week. AT&T and Verizon tell The Verge they’ll have live 5G networks in Maui at Qualcomm’s big event, and we’ll be able to try a real, 5G-enabled phone (maybe even two) and a pocketable 5G mobile hotspot for the first time.Qualcomm will also reveal a new Snapdragon processor designed to appear in actual 5G phones, and a “Snapdragon 1000” processor for a new wave of always-connected Windows laptops. (Maybe, after a decade and numerous attempts, Qualcomm will finally demo a smartbook worth buying.) Qualcomm will attempt to use the rising wave of 5G hype to help raise the profile of its new chips — and make the case that the two are potentially connected.After speaking to executives from Qualcomm, Verizon, and AT&T, we’re getting a far clearer picture of what they hope 5G will offer on day one, even though an awful lot of key details are still up in the air. Even if AT&T launches a 5G mobile network by the end of the year — AT&T said “in the next few weeks” over five weeks ago, and it’s sticking by “end of the year” as of today — you won’t just be able to run out and buy a 5G phone. The only confirmed device so far for AT&T’s network is the chunky Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot, and AT&T tells us that the so-called “puck” will be its only 5G device available at launch. If those aren’t your cup of tea, you’ll probably be waiting until Q2 2019 at the earliest. That’s when Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon expects the first real wave of smartphones to arrive. And that's when Samsung says it'll have a 5G phone on Verizon's network, if not others too.”We are working, so as early as the second quarter of 2019, you’ll have smartphones being launched across the United States, across Europe, across South Korea, Australia. Some early in the quarter, some later in the quarter... they’re all going to be Android flagship devices,” says Amon. “You go to CES [in January], you’ll start to see a lot of phone announcements; you go to MWC [in February], you’ll see a lot of actual phone launches.”
You’ll note that Qualcomm’s president says “Android,” not Apple — rumor is Apple won’t release a 5G iPhone until 2020. That shouldn’t be much of a surprise, considering how the original iPhone didn’t yet have 3G, and the iPhone 4S didn’t add LTE, even though both were available in competing phones at the time. At least this time, one 5G standard — known as 5G NR and created by the GSMA — has practically everybody on board. Back in the day, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint were trying to push HSPA and WiMax as their LTE alternatives. But even Verizon, which originally promoted and has already deployed the competing 5G TF standard to deliver wireless internet to homes in four US cities, says all of its future deployments will be on 5G NR instead, and that 5G TF was just a way to push the industry to quickly adopt an actual global standard. For all they knew, 5G TF could have been it. Lenovo IdeaPad B470G Battery LA Times: There was a question at a “Destroyer” Q&A for Nicole Kidman about how her cop character was sort of masculine. How did you feel about the gender stereotype surrounding that?Kusama: There’s also a somewhat casual aside that the role that she’s playing is something that would typically be played by a man. But I actually feel like the strength of the character comes from her vulnerability, her complexity, her irascibility but also a sort of tenderness. And I realize there’s an instinct in me to challenge the people asking that question or making that assumption of the film to offer women as many roles as men get that are as interesting. Like I hope that the progress is that we start not really looking at gender and race and ethnicities and just start having a broader conversation about, like, are we feeling a full humanity (in this character)? LA Times: With an action movie like “Black Panther,” are you still thinking about it in a political way?Coogler: “Black Panther” is inherently about an African politician in a country that’s fictitious, but what’s fictitious about it is directly pointing a finger at the presence of colonization. It’s a country that escaped colonization and maintained its independence and dominion over their resources. That’s why they’re a superpower. So the film is going to be political. It’s going to deal with colonization. It’s going to deal with what it means to be African. So we were able to lean into those things. I’m actually more impressed when people are able to deftly handle those things that aren’t (so literally in the plot). Like with “Roma,” you know, I’m watching a film about a domestic worker. As soon as the kid tells the maid, “Hey, why do you talk like that?” I’m like, “This is a colonization issue here. These are the indigenous people who at some point or another had been conquered and now she’s speaking another language. So it was almost like the inverse of what we were talking about. For (“Black Panther”) it was easy. It was right there on the surface. Cuaron: Well it was easier because I was dealing with memories, and it’s the understanding of the person. There are maybe political elements to that understanding. But it was about doing things that made sense or that felt right, not so much about, “OK, here I need this comment.” The fact that you have the characters, by de facto there’s already a comment. When you have a domestic worker who has an indigenous background in a middle-class Mexican white family, there’s already something going on.
Lanthimos: That’s the great thing about other people speaking about your films, and that’s why I always feel uncomfortable explaining things because I can’t really see the way other people see it. I’ve made it. I’ve spent so much time with it. I can give you a very limited truth about something that I made, but you know it’s going to be much more interesting and insightful if someone else sees the film — what it means for them and what it does to them and how it affects them. I think that’s the reason you’re actually making it, to give it out to the world and each different person will perceive it in a very personal way — hopefully, if it works.An overheated laptop battery is said to have caused a fire that destroyed a Winnipeg farming family’s “dream home.” Randy and Joyska Tkachyk were leaving church last week when they noticed a series of missed calls from Randy’s mother. When they called back, she shared the devastating news: “Your house is on fire.”The Tkachyks drove for an agonizing hour to get back to their farm in Piney, Man., to find rubble and embers in the place where their self-built home was still under construction.“It was gone,” said Joyska in an interview with CTV Winnipeg. “It was a very tall structure and it was just gone. There was nothing there but rubble and some small flames.”The family’s dog died in the blaze, which fire inspectors said likely started when a laptop with an overheated lithium-ion battery burst into flames. Health Canada says that common lithium-ion batteries are “more susceptible to being damaged than other types of batteries” and users should take precautions when charging them. The Tkachyks don’t yet have an estimate for damages, but the fire snuffed out a year’s work by Randy, who began building an 1,800-square-foot addition to the original 1,100-square-foot bungalow in 2017.“This was going to be the rest of our dream home,” he said. “It’s difficult. When you build something from scratch, you’re proud of it. But whatever man builds, it doesn’t last forever here.”The Tkachyks have found comfort in their community and their faith during the ordeal. “It was devastating,” said Joyska. “Yet at the same time we looked at it and literally the thought in my head was ‘The Lord gives, the lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord.’”Neighbours immediately began to offer clothes, food and shelter after the news spread. “We have never experienced this kind of outpouring in our lives,” she said.
Randy was able to easily get back to work on the farm where they raise cattle thanks to neighbours who offered him warm clothing. While they lament the loss of irreplaceable sentimental items and the hard work on the home’s construction, they consider most of that simply material things.“I cannot leave this world with anything,” said Randy. “God is good. The neighbours and everyone -- they’re here and they’re lifting us up when we’re down.”Spectre is HP’s premium consumer laptop line. The long-awaited redesign is a marked improvement on the classic MacBook Air, which hadn’t seen a significant design change since 2008 when it was introduced by Steve Jobs.Like the original version, it is light and durable with a 13.3-inch display. But this version comes with modern features like a high-resolution Retina (2,560-by-1,600) display and a Touch ID fingerprint reader. Nobody’s screening “Bridge on the River Kwai” in Oakland right now.Cuaron: Yeah, but why on the iPhone?Coogler: That’s how they watch stuff. That’s their world. I got a brother who’s six years younger than me and he does stuff, like just six years’ (difference) and he does stuff I just would never understand.Lee: It’s like Auto-Tune. I know, I know, but what happened to people singing? Aretha Franklin. James Brown.Coogler: It’s just an instrument, a new instrument. Cuaron: I don’t like it, but remember that people also said sound is killing cinema. Let’s see what these new masters create with (the iPhones).Rourke: You can’t predict what it’s going to do when you give, particularly young people, a new piece of technology. What was interesting for me going from theater to cinema, like, can I feel the audience? In theater you can really feel it. And for me that act of assembly, particularly when your work has a mission and a political life behind it and a drive, to sit among a group of people and watch that thing is tremendously important. Kusama: This idea of a sustained experience that we agree to participate in together. Yes, you can sit in theaters where people are on their phone or they’re talking, but you’re there together for two hours and you’re not getting up and walking away and reheating dinner. You’re there together, sharing the time together.Cuaron: But there’s another element of this (streaming idea). The actress of “Roma,” Yalitza (Aparicio), she’s so happy the film is going on Netflix. And when you ask her why, she says, “Because I want my communities to see the film. And otherwise we’ll have to travel more than three hours to go to a theater, and we don’t have the resources for that.” You know, it’s how much you want to democratize the spread of your films.
LA Times: Ryan, in your movie, “Creed,” there’s a moment where people are watching a James Bond movie and then in “Black Panther,” you’ve essentially sneaked a James Bond movie into the middle of the story with this cool casino fight and car chase. Do movies that you watch and love inform your filmmaking?Coogler: I wanted to be a filmmaker because I love the way watching movies made me feel. So like this gentleman here (motions to Lee), legend has it in 1992 he said, “When ‘Malcolm X’ comes out, every black father should take his kid to see this movie.” Something along those lines? Coogler: My dad listened to this and took me to see “Malcolm X.” I was very, very young; I sat on his lap because the theater was packed. And I became very emotional while I was watching it. When Denzel (Washington) points his hand and all of the other people turn, I’d never seen a black man photographed like that. I’d never seen a black man that powerful on a hundred-foot screen. And when he got killed, both me and my dad, along with a lot of other people in the theater, cried. So now when I think about “Malcolm X” and I watch it, I think about my dad. That medium is so powerful, that’s the reason that I wanted to do it.And the only way that I get the motivation or the confidence that maybe I can make a film work is by looking at other films that made a similar story work. So I do my homework when I get into making a certain type of film. When I sat down with Kevin Feige at Marvel Studios and they were talking to me about “Panther” and they said, “You know, we figure this could be our version of James Bond.” And I got really excited about that, like an African king who was also like a James Bond. LA Times: Spike, what does that mean to you when you hear someone like Ryan or maybe some of your students at NYU talk about your influence on them?Lee: I’m honored to hear that. And for me it’s a cycle. We just gotta keep going. I was very lucky to work with the great Ossie Davis and knew Gordon Parks and so those were people who I saw their films. Just keep it going. (To Coogler) Besides you, I was the second most happiest … about the success of your film. I mean, it’s a game-changer and it’s not about race or anything. This is just a (huge impact) in the industry no matter who you are.
Kusama: But also I think this idea of legacy and diversity that you bring up, like when I think about you, Spike, I think about “She’s Gotta Have it” and I think about seeing a movie in college in which I was able to see a woman with agency kind of wreak havoc in so many other people’s lives. And I was like, “Oh, God, I really like her.” I don’t know if this is the forum for how conscious you were of that being a somewhat radical choice to have Nola Darling exist.Lee: It wasn’t all like that. It was half the black women saying it was misogynistic. So I was getting it from both sides on that.Kusama: Complicated work often has to endure complicated conversations. But then cut to watching “Black Panther” in the theater with my son who is 11, and have him want to collect the action figures of all the female characters because he thought they were the coolest. Kusama: (“Black Panther”) is not just about stepping into the one single hero role but into something more expansive. It’s what “Roma” is asking us to do, step into a character we never really get access to. We don’t get to see life from that perspective. That’s what movies can do.LA Times: Yorgos, all of your movies have been about power dynamics, and in the “Favourite,” it’s very specifically about power dynamics among these three women. Did that feel distinct for you?Lanthimos: We started this film like nine years ago, so back then I didn’t feel like I was doing something along the lines of the times. I just had read about this story about these three women and I went like, “Oh, interesting, you can make a film with three female leads and you can create these complex characters.” Just normal stuff that you were supposed to be seeing in cinema but for whatever reason, it wasn’t there. I’m glad that that’s now happening and this film feels more relevant now, but at the same time, I tried to not make any comment about the fact that there’s homosexual relationships or anything like that. I just wanted to approach it as they have this power and how their behavior and their decisions affect millions of other people. That’s what was more interesting. Samsung q310 Battery This year’s Envelope Directors Roundtable features Greek-born Yorgos Lanthimos discussing his subversive English costume drama “The Favourite,” English-born Josie Rourke with her historical tale of a Scottish queen in “Mary Queen of Scots,” Brooklyn’s Spike Lee with his fact-based period satire on race and bigotry with “BlacKkKlansman,” Mexican-born Alfonso Cuarón with a personal story drawn from his childhood in “Roma,” Los Angeles-based Karyn Kusama with an intense L.A.-set crime story in “Destroyer,” and Oakland-born Ryan Coogler with his sharp, transcontinental upheaval of superhero conventions in “Black Panther.”This eclectic group of directors found much common ground to discuss, from social and political messaging in film to the impact of Netflix and shrinking screens, to James Bond and the horror that is Auto-tune. Here’s an excerpt of their conversation, edited for length and clarity.Los Angeles Times: Spike, in “BlacKkKlansman,” there’s a scene of people watching a movie, and it really brings up the idea of finding a space for yourself in the industry and within the history of cinema. Do you feel like that’s something you’ve been trying to do throughout your career?Spike Lee: Well, I don’t know about throughout my career, but definitely with this new film. I mean, the film begins with “Gone With the Wind.” And then we go into “Birth of a Nation,” films that are supposedly the greatest American films ever made in cinema. So my first semester in NYU grad film school, we were shown “Birth of a Nation.” And we were told of the many innovations of D.W. Griffith, but they never brought up the social-political ramifications. The Klan was dormant. That film made the Klan come alive. Black people got lynched because of that movie. I also remember third or fourth grade, they reissued “Gone With the Wind.” It was a class trip and the teacher did not do anything to speak about the (racism in it). So those two films are very personal to me.
LA Times: Karyn, your last couple of films were made independently at the same time you’ve been directing television. Do you feel that you’ve had to consciously carve out a space for yourself outside of the studio system?Karyn Kusama: I feel like as a director I’ve learned through some painful give-and-take that I just function best with a sense of creative authority on set and then beyond in the post phase. And then ideally in the marketing phase, it’s important to feel like you’re still a part of the voice of the film at all stages. And the lower my budgets are, the more possibility I feel to have that control. It’s just the decision I’ve made.LA Times: And Josie, “Mary Queen of Scots” is your first feature film after working in theater. Was the experience of making that movie as you expected? Josie Rourke: The thing that really struck me is that it’s an athletic act. I mean I had never been paid to work outdoors when I went to the highlands of Scotland and shot this movie. But, you know, it’s not just about physical athleticism or endurance. It’s also about a political athleticism. And it’s about a rigor and holding on to what you really believe in and giving clarity. It’s not that theater’s not like that, but there’s a gigantic difference of scale, and also there’s just the plurality of voice I think in (the film) space that you have to learn to negotiate and that takes enormous strength.LA Times: Alfonso, your small, personal black-and-white film ended up at Netflix. Why did you feel like this was the right home? Cuaron: Well, maybe you just defined why. You know, this is a film that due to finances is a Mexican film in Spanish, black-and-white, that if you see it through that filter — in a conventional market, particularly — it’s very challenging nowadays and very complex, the market for foreign films. And you start facing a lot of limitations. And what Netflix offered that was amazing is they saw the film past those filters. They went into the emotional core. And they’re doing an amazing job so far about taking it to theaters and then hopefully giving it a great life on the platform later on.Lee: It’s very exciting and not just Netflix. I mean this is a good time to be a filmmaker … the more places that stream, they need product. They need people, they need young people. And it gives filmmakers an opportunity because there’s just more outlets.
LA Times: But do you get hung up on this sort of existential crisis of like what is a movie, does Netflix redefine that?Cuaron: I don’t understand why the definition of one of these platforms means not theatrical. I think that both things could be absolutely compatible. So in the best-case scenario, in a film that is highly successful in terms of economics like Ryan’s film … How many months was “Black Panther” in theaters?Ryan Coogler: Maybe four. Don’t hold me to that because I’m not sure, but around four.Cuaron: Let’s say four months and that is an amazing run, amazing. But in the context of 20 years, 30 years — what I’m saying is that there was (always a limited film run) in theaters. And then now our films are going to live on in platforms no matter what. I think that if anything creates new options as Spike is saying because it’s not only about films from different cultures. It’s also about exploring different forms, different formats, maybe even different lengths.Rourke: It’s so funny to have everyone say “theater,” “theater,” “theater” when, you know, that’s the medium I spent my life in. I know you’re from that world as well, Yorgos, and you know we’re a 2,000-year-old medium. One of the things that actually starts to push our craft forward as theater directors is to think about the different spaces in which we’re making that work. And so that’s a fascinating thing about cinema. It’s such a young medium, and that’s thrilling to think that this is the beginning of this change. LA Times: Yorgos, how do you feel that your background in theater informs the work you’re doing now in cinema?Yorgos Lanthimos: What I learned and what I appreciate is you don’t have to come in with a very fixed idea of what you want to do and then, you know, set it up and show it. You can experiment. You can make mistakes. You can go in a different direction. You can learn with the people that you work with. The downside with film with all those different platforms is that you make a film that will be seen from, you know, an iPhone to a huge screen to a laptop.Lee: I’m a professor of film (at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts), and the first thing every semester I have a list of films. And I ask my students to raise your hand if you’ve seen this film. And especially David Lean films — “Bridge on the River Kwai,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Doctor Zhivago” — they say, “Yeah, I saw it, Professor Lee, but I saw it on my iPhone.” I’m like, “Oh, my God! ‘I saw “2001” on my iPhone?’” And then they watch it vertical. Danach drückt Ihr auf die "Ein/Aus"-Taste.Ein weiteres Problem, das nach dem Lollipop-Update auf Eurem HTC One M8 auftreten kann, betrifft die Nachrichten-App. So kann es beispielsweise beim Aufrufen von Nachrichten zu Verzögerungen kommen, wenn es sich um Kontakte handelt, mit denen Ihr besonders häufig kommuniziert. Dies könnte durch die gespeicherten Cache-Daten der App verursacht werden. Deshalb solltet Ihr in diesem Fall den Anwendungs-Cache löschen. Eure Nachrichten werden dabei nicht gelöscht. Um den Cache der Nachrichten-App zu löschen, müsst Ihr als Erstes in die Einstellungen Eures HTC One M8 gehen. Hier tippt Ihr dann auf "Apps". Jetzt tippt Ihr auf der Registerkarte "Alle" auf die Nachrichten-Anwendung. Es erscheint ein Fenster, wo Ihr abschließend auf "Cache löschen" tippen müsst.Einige Besitzer eines One M8 klagen zudem über Gmail-Probleme nach der Installation des Lollipop-Updates. So sollen beispielsweise Google-Mail-Benachrichtigungen von einzelnen Accounts nicht mehr ankommen. In diesem Fall solltet Ihr die betreffenden Google-Accounts nach einem Backup neu erstellen. Andere Nutzer klagen hingegen über eine drastische Reduzierung der Akku-Laufzeit nach dem Update sowie extrem langsame Ladezeiten. In beiden Fällen könnt Ihr versuchen, ob auch hier das Wiederherstellen der Standardwerte Abhilfe verschafft. Führt den sogenannten Factory Reset wie bereits vorab beschrieben durch.
Das Galaxy Note 8 soll Gerüchten zufolge auch in einer dunkelblauen Farbausführung erscheinen. Wie das Gerät in "Deep Sea Blue" aussieht, soll nun ein geleaktes Bild zeigen. Allerdings ist auf der Abbildung nur die Vorderseite des Smartphones sichtbar.Offenbar ist nicht nur das Galaxy Note 8 selbst im dunkelblauen Farbton gehalten: Über Twitter hat der Leak-Experte Evan Blass ein Bild geteilt, dem zufolge auch der S Pen einen Anstrich in Dunkelblau erhält. Da nur die Vorderseite abgebildet ist, lässt sich die Farbe beim Gerät selbst nur oben und unten ganz an den Rändern erkennen. Wie auch schon beim Galaxy S8 wird die Vorderseite des Note 8 demnach oben und unten mit schmalen schwarzen Rändern versehen sein – den Rest des Platzes nimmt wohl das Display ein, sodass "Deep Sea Blue" wohl nur auf der Rückseite so richtig zur Geltung kommt. Samsung veröffentlicht seine Top-Smartphones üblicherweise nicht in allen Regionen in der gleichen Farbe. Sollte das Bild des Leak-Experten der Wirklichkeit entsprechen, bleibt also noch unklar, ob Ihr das Phablet auch hierzulande in Dunkelblau erwerben könnt. Sollte dies nicht der Fall sein, wäre es aber immer noch möglich, dass Samsung die Farbe zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt in Deutschland verfügbar macht, um die Verkäufe erneut anzukurbeln.Schon das Galaxy S7 ist nachträglich in dem hellen Blauton "Blue Coral" erscheinen – aber nicht in Deutschland. Hierzulande ist das Gerät in dieser Farbe nur via Import zu bekommen. Ob das beim Galaxy Note 8 und der Farbe "Deep Sea Blue" anders sein wird, erfahren wir schon sehr bald: Am 23. August 2017 wird das Smartphone offiziell vorgestellt. Die mutmaßlichen Specs sind ebenso wie das angebliche Design bereits im Netz gelandet. Das MacBook und das besser ausgestattete Pro-Modell lassen eigentlich kaum Wünsche offen. Design, Performance und Display gehören offenbar zum Besten, was Premium-Notebooks heutzutage bieten. Einziges Manko gegenüber der Windows-Konkurrenz ist für viele das fehlende Touch-Display, das einige Convertibles besitzen. Wie ein solches dem Apple-Notebook stehen würde, zeigt nun eine Designstudie.Das Besondere an der Designstudie "MacBook Touch" von handy-abovergleich.ch ist, dass das fiktive Apple-Notebook nicht nur einen berührungsempfindlichen Hauptbildschirm besitzt, wie wir das von einigen Windows-Laptops kennen. Dort, wo sich normalerweise die Tastatur befindet, sieht das Konzept nämlich ebenfalls ein Touch-Display vor.
Das "MacBook Touch" besitzt also keine physische Tastatur mehr. Stattdessen wird diese bei Bedarf wie bei Smartphones und Tablets eingeblendet. Für das haptische Feedback, das viele moderne Ultrabooks ja leider vermissen lassen, würde Apples Technologie 3D Touch sorgen. Und wenn gerade einmal keine Textarbeit anfällt, lässt sich das Display für andere kreative Aufgaben verwenden.Wie ihr auf dem Bild am Ende des Artikels sehen könnt, ließe sich das zweite Touch-Display des MacBooks in Verbindung mit dem Apple Pencil etwa als Zeichen-Tablet nutzen. Darüber nehmen eine weiterentwickelte Touch Bar und ein "Touch Dock" Platz. Außerdem wachsen das im aktuellen Modell ohnehin bereits riesige Trackpad und die Lautsprecher auf die doppelte Größe an. Apropos Größe: Das MacBook Touch soll das 17-Zoll-Format zurückbringen, das viele Apple-Enthusiasten seit Jahren schmerzlich vermissen. Eigentlich hatte der mittlerweile verstorbene Steve Jobs ja einmal erklärt, dass es ein MacBook mit Touch-Display nicht geben werde. Und in der gezeigten Form wird es auch wohl niemals erscheinen. Sollte es sich allerdings bewahrheiten, dass macOS und iOS sich künftig die gleichen Programme teilen, könnte ein MacBook mit berührungsempfindlichem Bildschirm doch noch ein Thema werden – immerhin dürften viele Apps die Eingabemethode dann bereits unterstützen.Probleme nach dem Update auf Android 5.0 Lollipop: Wie auch bei anderen Geräten können auf dem Samsung Galaxy S5 nach dem Update auf die neue Android-Version Schwierigkeiten auftreten. Das ist kein Grund zur Sorge, da mitunter das alte Betriebssystem nicht komplett überschrieben wird. Infolgedessen kann es sein, dass einzelne Funktionen haken oder nicht mehr zur Verfügung stehen. Auch sind noch nicht alle Apps mit der neuen Android-Version kompatibel. Wir haben ein paar der häufigsten Probleme aufgegriffen und beschreiben Möglichkeiten zur Behebung. Um die Schwierigkeiten zu beheben, die nach dem Lollipop-Update entstehen können, kann eine sogenannte "Wipe Cache Partition" hilfreich sein. Durch das Löschen des Caches entfernt Ihr temporäre Dateien des alten Betriebssystems, die von der alten Version des Betriebssystems angelegt wurden und dem fehlerfreien Funktionieren von Android Lollipop im Wege stehen können.Zunächst solltet Ihr zur Sicherheit ein Backup Eurer Daten anfertigen und anschließend das Samsung Galaxy S5 ausschalten. Die Bässe sind kräftig, aber nicht zu übertrieben. Die Höhen stechen hervor, ohne weh zu tun und die Mitten runden das wunderbare Soundpaket ab. Besser geht es kaum, wenn man mobile Lautsprecher haben will. Dabei sind beide Lautsprecher sehr laut – wobei der Megaboom erwartungsgemäß etwas mehr Power hat. In meiner Wohnung habe ich mich nicht getraut sie lauter als 50 Prozent aufzudrehen. Dreht man die Lautsprecher richtig auf, leidet die Soundqualität nicht. Alles bleibt verständlich und es gibt keine Übersteuerung.Apropos Mobilität: Die Boom 3 und Megaboom 3 könnt ihr weiter von der Bluetooth-Quelle entfernen als ihre Vorgänger – sofern das Abspielgerät auch Bluetooth 5.0 unterstützt. Dann soll die maximale Reichweite im Freien bei 45 Metern liegen. Im Test stellten die Wände innerhalb der Wohnung kein Problem dar. Der UE Boom 3 und der Megaboom 3 sind klassische Bluetooth-Lautsprecher und benötigen ein Smartphone, Tablet oder Computer als Quelle für ihren Ton. Sie haben anders als der UE Blast und Megablast keinen persönlichen Assistenten an Bord, beherrschen kein Multiroom und sind nicht ins WLAN eingebunden. Ihr könnt über die neu gestaltete Boom-App unter iOS und Android aber bis zu 150 der Lautsprecher mit der PartyUp-Funktion zur gemeinsamen Wiedergabe verbinden. Das funktioniert denkbar einfach und klingt sehr schön. Zumindest bei den zwei Boom-Lautsprecher im Test konnte ich keine Verzögerung bei der Wiedergabe hören und hatte schönen Sound, der sich aus zwei Zimmern in der Wohnung verteilte oder in einem Raum für einen Stereo-Sound sorgte.
Zusätzlich hält die Boom-App einen Equalizer bereit. Hier kann man den Klang mit mehreren Voreinstellungen anpassen oder selber Hand anlegen und die Regler verschieben.Mit dem Magic Button hat sich UE etwas ganz neues für den Boom 3 und Megaboom 3 ausgedacht. Mit der Taste auf der Oberseite pausiert, startet und überspringt man jetzt nicht nur Songs, sondern kann auch direkt Playlisten aufrufen. Dafür muss man die Taste lange gedrückt halten und zuvor in der Boom-App seine Favoriten unter den Playlisten festlegen. Kleine Einschränkung: Unter Android funktioniert das momentan nur mit Deezer und unter iOS nur mit Apple Music. Es sollen aber weitere Streaming-Dienste folgen. Da die Lautsprecher keine WLAN-Verbindung haben, müssen sie zudem mit dem Smartphone gekoppelt sein, damit sich der Zauber entfalten kann. Das kann dann allerdings in der Tasche bleiben. Die beiden Boom 3 lassen sich drahtlos aufladen. Dafür muss man allerdings die Ladestation Boost Up für 40 Euro zusätzlich kaufen — im Paket mit den Lautsprechern kostet sie nur 30 Euro. Und ja, es ist bequem sie zum Aufladen einfach auf die Station zu stellen, aber auch mit einem Micro-USB-Kabel kann man sie immer noch problemlos aufladen.Wie schon die Vorgänger überzeugen auch der UE Boom 3 und der UE Megaboom 3 vor allem mit ihrem hervorragenden Sound. Die Robustheit sowie der Party-Modus und der Equalizer sind schöne Zugaben. Der Magic Button konnte mich in der Praxis bisher aber nicht von seiner Notwendigkeit überzeugen. Für unverbindliche Preisempfehlungen von 149 Euro für den Boom 3 und 199 Euro für den Megaboom 3, bekommt ihr ein sehr gutes Preis-Sound-Paket. Die größte Konkurrenz kommt aus dem eigenen Haus. Der UE Boom 2 oder der Megaboom klingen ebenfalls immer noch hervorragend und sind günstiger zu bekommen. Eltern müssen bei der Übergabe von Smartphone oder Tablet an die Kinder besonders gut aufpassen. Für den bestmöglichen Schutz der Kleinen stellt Android Lollipop eine ganz praktische Funktion bereit. Mittels "Screen-Pinning" schaltet Ihr nur eine einzige App für den Gebrauch frei. Ansonsten bleibt Euer Mobilgerät gesperrt.Das ursprünglich als "Screen Pinning" bekannte Feature steht Euch ab Android 5.0 Lollipop unter dem deutschen Namen "Bildschirm anheften" zur Verfügung. Der Name lässt erahnen, worum es geht: Ihr fixiert den aktuellen Bildschirminhalt, respektive gezielt eine einzige App. Nutzer des Geräts können dann nur noch über einen speziellen Entsperrvorgang wieder auf andere Geräteinhalte zugreifen.Ideal also, um Kinder vor unsachgemäßem Gebrauch zu schützen. Alternativ würde es auch mit der Einrichtung mehrerer Benutzerkonten klappen. Das ist aber umständlicher und nicht die schnellste Lösung.
Wenn Eure Kleinen also ausschließlich bei ihrer Lernspiel-App oder beim Malprogramm bleiben sollen, empfiehlt sich die Aktivierung der Pinning-Funktion. Die findet Ihr unter "Einstellungen | Sicherheit | Bildschirm anheften". Legt oben rechts den Schalter durch Antippen mit dem Finger um und der Status ändert sich von "Aus" zu "An".Startet jetzt eine App, die Ihr anheften möchtet. Drückt anschließend die Multitasking- oder Übersicht-Taste für den Aufruf der App-Übersicht. Durchrollt per Fingerwisch nun die Liste, bis Eure gesuchte App mit einem Stecknadel-Symbol in der rechten unteren Ecke sichtbar wird. Tippt das Symbol mit dem Finger an. Die Frage, ob Ihr die Bildschirmfixierung wirklich verwenden möchtet, bestätigt Ihr durch Antippen von "STARTEN". Die App ist jetzt angeheftet.Jeder Nutzer des Geräts kann sich jetzt nur noch in dieser einen App frei bewegen – bis ein informierter Anwender die Fixierung aufhebt. Haltet dazu gleichzeitig zwei Finger auf der Übersicht- und Zurück-Taste auf Eurem Android-Gerät, bis die App nicht mehr angeheftet ist. Jetzt sind wieder alle Inhalte auf dem Android-Gerät zugänglich. Seit einiger Zeit ist Android Lollipop hierzulande auch endlich für das HTC One M8 erhältlich. Doch nicht bei allen Besitzern ist die Freude über das Update groß, denn im Zuge der Installation des neuen Betriebssystems kann es in manchen Fällen zu Problemen kommen. Um welche Komplikationen es sich dabei handelt und wie Ihr die durch das Update entstandenen Probleme wieder behebt, verraten wir Euch in diesem Ratgeber.Es kann vorkommen, dass Euer HTC One M8 nach der Installation von Lollipop plötzlich wesentlich länger zum Laden benötigt als zuvor. Die meisten der genannten Geräte sind aber bereits mit Vorab-Versionen der neuen Software in Videos festgehalten worden – ein gutes Zeichen für einen recht baldigen Release der Updates. Die Details zur Ausstattung deuten einen hochklassigen Konkurrenten zum Surface Pro 4 an.Das Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 720 soll den geleakten Daten zufolge über ein 12-Zoll-Display verfügen, das mit 2880 x 1920 Pixeln auflöst, berichtet Winfuture. Zum Vergleich: Das Surface Pro 4 von Microsoft bietet einen 12,3-Zoll-Bildschirm mit der Auflösung von 2736 x 1824 Bildpunkten. Für die Abdeckung des Displays verwendet Lenovo angeblich Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
