Motorola hat den Marktstart seines neuen Topmodells Razr HD im Oktober angek¨¹ndigt. Das Smartphone hat ein hochauflösendes 4,7-Zoll-Display, einen 1,5 GHz schnellen Dualcore-Prozessor und soll besonders viel Ausdauer besitzen.Nachdem Motorola in der letzten Woche drei neue Android-Smartphones in den USA vorgestellt hat, k¨¹ndigt das Google-Tochterunternehmen heute den Marktstart eines dieser Modelle in Deutschland an. Das Razr HD verf¨¹gt ¨¹ber ein 4,7 Zoll großes Display, das mit seiner Auflösung von 1280 x 720 Bildpunkten viel Detailschärfe verspricht und dank Super-AMOLED-Technologie auch sehr farbstark ist. Den Antrieb ¨¹bernimmt ein Doppelkern-Prozessor mit 1,5 Gigahertz Taktung. Eine 8-Megapixel-Kamera auf der R¨¹ckseite ist auch vorhanden.

Nach Angaben von Motorola hat das Razr HD besonders viel Ausdauer: Bis zu sieben Stunden Videos bei YouTube schauen oder 20 Stunden Musik streamen oder 16 Stunden am St¨¹ck telefonieren soll mit einer Akkuladung (ohne Nachladen) möglich sein. Die App Smartactions soll zusätzlich den Akku schonen.Das Smartphone hat ein Gehäuse aus verstärkenden Kevlar-Fasern mit einer wasserabweisenden Nanobeschichtung. In Deutschland wird das Razr HD mit Android 4.0 ausgeliefert. Bei der Präsentation der amerikanischen Variante des Razr HD wurde ein baldiges Update auf Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) angek¨¹ndigt. Ob es Jelly Bean demnächst auch auf der bei uns angeboten Version geben wird, ist bislang nicht klar.Der chinesischen Mobilfunkspezialist ZTE bringt sein neues 4,3 Zoll-Mittelklasse-Modell Grand X nach England. Im neuen Grand X von ZTE kommt Mittelklasse-Technik zum Einsatz. F¨¹r den Antrieb sorgt ein Nvidia Tegra 2 Doppelkern-Prozessor, der mit 1 Gigahertz getaktet ist. Ihm stehen knapp bemessene 512 Megabyte Arbeitsspeicher zur Verf¨¹gung. Auch der interne Speicher ist mit 4 Megabyte nicht sonderlich groß, lässt sich aber per Speicherkarte erweitern. Sein 4,3 Zoll großes Display bietet hingegen mit 960 x 540 Pixel etwas mehr Detailschärfe als klassen¨¹blich. Das 110 Gramm leichte Smartphone nutzt Android 4.0 als Betriebssystem. Es verf¨¹gt ¨¹ber eine 5-Megapixel-Autofokus-Kamera auf der R¨¹ckseite. DNLA-Anschluss, WLAN, Bluetooth und GPS sind auch vorhanden. Sein Akku fällt mit 1650 mAh vielversprechend ¨¹ppig aus.Das ZTE Grand X kommt im August in England auf den Markt. Ob und wann ein Marktstart in Deutschland erfolgt, ist im Moment ebenso wenig bekannt wie sein Preis. Der d¨¹rfte jedoch entscheidend sein f¨¹r den zuk¨¹nftigen Markterfolg des neuen ZTE-Modells. Knapp zwei Wochen nach Einf¨¹hrung der finalen Version von Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) stellte das Unternehmen heute in China sein erstes Smartphone mit dem brandneuen Betriebssystem Android 4.1 vor. Das 130 Gramm schwere ZTE N880E ist das erste Nicht-Google-Smartphone, dass mit Android 4.1 ausgestattet ist. Das auf dem chinesischen Markt bereits seit Mai 2012 angeboten Modell nutzte bislang Android 2.3. Es besitzt einen 1 GHz schnellen Qualcomm-Prozessor, 512 MB Arbeitsspeicher sowie einen 4 GB großen internen Speicher. Sein 4 Zoll-Display mit 480 x 800 Pixel Auflösung und die 3,2 Megapixel-Autofokuskamera zeichnen es ebenfalls als Mittelklassemodell aus. Der in die d¨¹nne Tastatur eingebaute Akku soll eine Einsatzdauer von 30 Tagen erlauben.Die Tastatur gibt es bislang nur in einer Version mit amerikanischer Tastenbelegung (QWERTY) - RIM bietet sie ab Ende des Monats in seinem Online-Shop f¨¹r 119,99 Dollar an.Ob und wann eine deutsche Variante der Tastatur folgen wird, ist noch nicht bekannt. Die neue Sony NXT-Smartphone-Serie bekommt Zuwachs. Nachdem Sony vor einigen Wochen das neue Flaggschiff Sony Xperia S erstmals zeigte, präsentierten das Unternehmen heute in Barcelona die beiden kleineren Modellvarianten Xperia P und Xperia U. Das 120 Gramm schwere Xperia P hat ein mittelgroßes Display. Die 4,0 Zoll-Anzeige ist aber mit 960 x 540 Pixel sehr detailreich und soll durch den Einsatz der White-Magic-Technik auch bei starker Sonneneinstrahlung scharfe Bilder liefern. Angetrieben wird das Sony-Smartphone durch einen 1 Gigahertz schnellen Dualcore-Prozessor, wie viel Arbeitsspeicher ihm Sony zur Verf¨¹gung stellt wird nicht verraten. Der interne Speicher liegt bei 16 GB (frei verf¨¹gbar sind 13 GB) - er ist nicht durch eine Speicherkarte erweiterbar. Etwas knapp bemessen ist sein Akku: der fasst lediglich 1300 mAh. Die 8 Megapixel-Autofokus-Kamera auf der R¨¹ckseite ist mit Autofokus und LED Blitz ausgestattet. Sie nimmt Videos mit 1080p auf. Das Xperia P kommt Mitte des zweiten Quartals in den Handel. All this is nothing new. I once read a fine book by Tibor Szamuely called The Russian Tradition, which was a roll call of despotism and revolution stretching back to Ivan the Terrible. What is new is that the Russians have adopted our methods and succeeded in showing Western capitalism a side of itself that it would rather forget.As Pomerantsev states: ¡°London is the perfect home for money laundering¡­ terrific lawyers¡­ great bankers¡­ weak cops¡±. In fact, to our Russian oligarchs: ¡°London and the West can be said with a light disgust as the place that shelters and rewards and strengthens the very forces that oppress them.¡±Pomerantsev¡¯s views are insightful and holistic. His book does not omit the role of the rest of the world, as when he describes the oligarch¡¯s tastes for ¡°fake art confirmed by Western art historians¡­ they play the same role as the Swiss and English lawyers who act as ¡®nominal beneficiaries¡¯ for money-laundering shell companies.¡±

This is a most excellent work that brings to life the reality of modern Russia. But the great thing about this book is that by focusing on a distant and extreme place, Pomerantsev brings into sharp focus the inequities and absurdities of modern capitalism worldwide, without pulpit or soap box.This work poses more fundamental questions than the recent, more parochial offerings of Owen Jones and Russell Brand combined, without any apparent agenda. Peter Pomerantsev is a fine observer and an engaging writer. I hope this work frees him from the tyranny of the television, lest he suffer the fate he has in mind for future Russians: ¡°We begin to live in a parallel reality of video ghosts¡±.Something for the Weekend, Sir? Remember BYOD? Well, it¡¯s BYODded off into the sunset. It was the Next Big Thing, just before the next Next Big Thing that came after that and it followed hot on the heels of the Previous Big Thing. Without doubt, BYOD was big and it was a thing ¨C but the party is over.

For the benefit of occasional readers of this column who are not familiar with the expression BYOD ¨C that is, my Mum and the professional dullards who Google me after we meet at boring business networking events (hi, guys!) ¨C it¡¯s an acronym (pronounced "bye-odd") for "Bring Your Own Device".It means using your own shiny new laptop, smartphone or tablet in the workplace so that you don¡¯t have to put up with the computer supplied by your employer ¨C namely, a third-hand, six-year-old Dell weighing 5kg with cracked screen, loose keys and a missing power cable that you consequently have to keep borrowing off other people.Quite obviously to anyone with half a braincell to spare, it¡¯s simply a means by which slave-owners wealthy employers absolve themselves of any obligation to invest in your basic work tools and make you pay for them yourself. After a couple of years during which employers have been royally shafting you with BYOD, I have noticed a very sudden withdrawal from the policy. In fact, so sudden is this figurative pulling out from this figurative shafting that they are having to figuratively finish themselves off in a figurative sheet of tissue paper.Since the second week of January, I have seen emails bouncing around from various IT departments that ask employees not to use their own kit at work any more. It turns out that inviting all and sundry to plug whatever they liked into the company network could prove to be a security risk. Shocking, I know. Who¡¯d have imagined such a thing?Some of these emails hide the failure of BYOD behind some limp-dicked, already-shot-my-load bravado about strengthening security measures in the wake of the Sony hack. One set phrase that appears again and again is: ¡°Internet threats are constantly evolving¡±.I hope such evolutionary smack-talk won¡¯t offend badly bearded Aussie creationist nutball Ken Ham. Unfortunately, that gives us an acronym of LTBTAH, which isn¡¯t so much an acronym as an initialism because you can¡¯t pronounce it. Well, OK, you can pronounce it if you try really hard but it sounds like you¡¯re trying to stifle a sneeze and it¡¯s blurted through your mouth.

Surely this is my opportunity to coin a brand new acronym and donate it to the computing world. I was thinking of something easy to pronounce such as KYDISH, which stands for ¡°Keep Your Dodgy Insecure Shit at Home¡±, but I fear the naughty S-word might hinder ISO adoption.Besides, the situation is more complicated than that. While organisations are drawing back from full-on BYOD, this is only for cabled connections. Apparently, connecting your own kit to the company network via Wi-Fi is not being restricted, since Wi-Fi connections are not a security risk.You don¡¯t have to know anything about network security to be aware that open password Wi-Fi is about as secure as a gaping handbag in a shopping trolley. Yet this is what is being offered: we should all now connect our own devices for work using the same vulnerable wireless connection as the one foisted on visiting guests. Yes, that¡¯s the Wi-Fi connection labelled with your unmistakable company name and appearing in everyone¡¯s lists alongside ¡°BT-Starbucks¡± and ¡°_theCloud¡±, without a padlock symbol next to it and prompting you for a password that¡¯s probably ¡°guest¡±, ¡°hello¡±, ¡°password¡± or the name of the street outside.

Now all my emails to and from senior management and production departments ¨C I can be dead important at times, I¡¯ll have you know ¨C can be picked out of the air by anyone planted in the next room or even sitting outside on the steps and looking up at the street sign on which someone has so conveniently printed the company¡¯s Wi-Fi password.So this means I need to invent a more qualified acronym for the BYOD withdrawal since it turns out I can still use my own device after all, just not with an Ethernet cable. I came up with ¡®Keep Network Open But Computer Hardware Ethernet Externally at Zero¡¯. Unfortunately, it has been pointed out to me that this would be pronounced KNOBCHEEZ, which by remarkable coincidence is my least favourite flavour of Pringles.Given the tone of the emails flying around on this topic, I also suspect there may be more stick than carrot in the implementation of this massive IT policy U-turn. They should put up posters: ¡°BYOD beware!¡±

Laptop-wielding gamers are up in arms over a driver update from Nvidia, which disables overclocking in the company's gaming-laptop-targeted GeForce GTX 900M devices.Those who installed the drivers had their clock settings wiped, and according to TechPowerUp, even third-party overclocking tools have been blocked.Nvidia's explanation for the change is that the GTX 900M was never supposed to be able to overclock, and the driver update reversed the mistake.In response to angry user posts on Nvidia forums, the company¡¯s Manuel Guzman responded:Unfortunately GeForce notebooks were not designed to support overclocking. By overclocking a notebook, a user risks serious damage to the system that could result in non-functional systems, reduced notebook life, or many other effects.There was a bug introduced into our drivers which enabled some systems to overclock. This was fixed in a recent update. Our intent was not to remove features from GeForce notebooks, but rather to safeguard systems from operating outside design limits.

Although a more familiar experience across devices is a good thing, sharing UI (User Interface) code across different form factors can result in a sub-optimal design. The Calculator app, for example, has richer features in the new universal app, but the typeface and buttons are small and faint compared to its predecessor which was designed solely for a phone.The same issue afflicts the new dialler app, and the biggest complaint currently visible in the feedback app is that the phone dialler buttons are too small. Fortunately there is plenty of time to tweak such things before release.The commitment to universal apps means that the Office applications currently available in preview for Windows 10 will also come to the phone. These include versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, which we can expect will be similar to those already available for Android and iOS. Mail and Calendar apps on the phone will be replaced by a version of Outlook.Despite disappointing initial impressions, spending time with Windows 10 reveals solid improvements. Notifications now support inline actions, such as replying to a text message, and this feels natural and saves time. The Action Center, revealed by a swipe from the top, is now more useful with up to three rows of icons. The Photos app can be set to show content from OneDrive cloud storage as well as the device itself, which means you can easily show snaps taken on other devices.

Some standard apps are greatly improved. The Alarms app now includes a world clock, where you can add cities to show times at a glance, as well as a timer and stopwatch; nice features though who expects to find a world clock in an Alarms app? The calculator has Scientific and Programmer modes, as well as numerous conversions. An enhanced File Explorer app comes as standard, replacing the File app Microsoft introduced for Windows Phone 8. Sound Recorder is a handy addition, useful for voice memos or quick recordings in meetings and the like.
Device encryption, previously controlled only via mobile device management such as Exchange ActiveSync Policy, can now be turned on easily through system settings.There is an intriguing new feature in the Windows 10 keyboard, which now has a blue dot, presumably representing a mouse stick as found on some laptop keyboards. You tap the dot and move your finger to move the text insertion point. If you miss the arrow keys found on most physical keyboards you may like this feature, though currently it is fiddly to control and too easy to overshoot the point you are trying to reach.

This first preview of Windows 10 on a phone does show promise. The built-in apps are richer than before, and show how it is possible to create apps that are almost the same on phone and PC. When the Office apps arrive, a Windows 10 phone will be more capable as a productivity platform than its predecessor. Microsoft is also making an effort to streamline the settings and options, a welcome change given the confusing long list that appears in Windows Phone 8.1.The preview is not intended for general use and there are glitches and performance issues. Developers with any interest in Microsoft¡¯s platform should pick it up though, since it shows how Microsoft is bringing commonality to phone and PC via universal apps. In this preview it is mostly successful, though there are places where adopting a common UI is detrimental to usability on a phone.Can the combined target of PC, tablet and phone convince developers to support Microsoft¡¯s mobile platform? In a mobile world dominated by iOS and Android it will not be easy, but there is hope for improvement. The price is right: a Lumia 630 is a cheap device, but with Windows 10 installed it is surprisingly attractive and capable. NTT, NEC, Hitachi, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, and ALAXALA have put together a key test of interoperability in the network function virtualisation (NFV) world.

They've shown that the NFV concept of ¡°service chaining¡± ¨C putting together virtualised services by directing traffic through the addresses of services rather than (say) hardware ¨C not only works, but can work on a cross-vendor basis.The release itself is pretty dry, so The Reg's networks desk is going to take a shot at explaining why it matters.
The first step in NFV is to take a function ¨C the firewall is a handy example ¨C and abstract it from particular hardware. Instead it becomes a software running on a virtual machine (VM) that can be spun up and down on-demand.Service chaining describes the next step in the operation: creating more complex services by ¡°chaining¡± different virtual network functions (VNFs) together ¨C with different service chains able to be built for different customers.While vendors would love to keep their customers closeted in a single environment, that's not really feasible ¨C which is why standards organisations like ETSI and the IETF have been working on interoperability.In the current six-vendor demo, which will be shown off in public later this week at the NTT Musashino R&D Center at that company's 2015 R&D forum, the collaborators demonstrated packet delivery to the appropriate virtual network service, in the correct order.

This involved the six vendors preparing various components of service chaining (Classifier, Service Function Forwarder, Service Function Chaining Proxy, and Controller) and getting them to interoperate.The NEC canned statement describes the roles of each of these as follows:Classifier ¨C Determines what service is to be applied to a flow, and attaches the appropriate tag. In the interop test, a network service header (currently being standardised in the ITEF) was used as the tag.
Service Function Forwarder (SFF) ¨C reads the tag to decide which service function is the destination for a particular packet.
SFC Proxy ¨C this provides legacy integration for ¡°pre-NFV¡± network services. Since (for example) a legacy firewall won't know what to do with the SFC header, it strips it off if a packet is being sent to a legacy service.

Mit dem Oppo Find 7 steht ein potentielles Top-Smartphone in den Startlöchern, das sich selbst vor dem Galaxy S5, dem Xperia Z2 und anderen Spitzengeräten nicht zu verstecken braucht. Highlights des 5,5-Zoll-Smartphones sind das tolle Display, eine hervorragende Kamera und interessante Zusatzfeatures.Das Find 7 wurde vom chinesischen Hersteller Oppo in dieser Woche offiziell in Peking vorgestellt. Der vermeintliche Galaxy S5- und Xperia Z2-Konkurrent wird in zwei verschiedenen Versionen erhältlich sein.Die Ausstattung samt 2,5 GHz schneller Quadcore-CPU, 3 GB RAM, LTE-Datenturbo, einem hoch auflösendem 2K-Display und 32 GB an internem Speicher, der sich zusätzlich erweitern lässt, kann sich sehen lassen. Der 3000 mAh starke und wechselbare Akku könnte f¨¹r eine ordentliche Ausdauer des 5,5-Zoll-Smartphones sorgen. Laut Hersteller Oppo soll es durch ein neu entwickeltes sogenanntes "OOC Rapid Charging" möglich sein, den leeren Akku des Find 7 innerhalb von 30 Minuten auf 75 Prozent aufzuladen. Damit ist es ein zuverlässiger Begleiter beim Sport, aber auch auf Baustellen und in Werkstätten. Wer einen solchen sucht, wird die etwas größeren Maße und das f¨¹r ein Handy stattliche Gewicht von 119 Gramm in Kauf nehmen. Im connect-Test kostet dieses Mehr an Material das B2710 allerdings ein paar Punkte und verhindert letztlich eine gute Bewertung.Ein Kompass hilft unterwegs bei der Orientierung; eine Navigation bietet das B2710 nicht.
Dabei zeigt das Handy kaum echte Schwächen. Zugegeben: Das von einer kratzfesten Abdeckung gesch¨¹tzte Display aus 240 x 300 Pixeln ist kein Highlight. Es ist nicht besonders groß und die Schriften sind in manchen Einstellungen teilweise arg klein - beispielsweise wenn man den Startbildschirm nach eigenem Gusto mit Funktionen und Schnellstartern belegt; wer es ¨¹bersichtlich will, lässt das einfach sein. Die wichtigen Grundfunktionen wie das Telefonieren und SMS-Tippen sind ohnehin ¨¹bersichtlich gestaltet - da schenken sich die großen Handyhersteller nicht mehr viel.

Der Schrittzähler arbeitet zuverlässig und berechnet nebenbei die verbrannten Kalorien.
Bei der Ausstattung versucht Samsung, dem B2710 ein bisschen Sportsgeist mit auf den Weg zu geben. Es hat einen Kompass sowie einen im Test recht zuverlässig arbeitenden Schrittzähler an Bord. Die Stoppuhr ist bei Handys fast schon ¨¹blich.Was fehlt, ist ein Tracking-Programm, das Radtouren oder Wanderungen aufzeichnen könnte; der daf¨¹r nötige GPS-Empfänger ist vorhanden. Hier lässt Samsung die letzte Konsequenz vermissen. Auch eine Navigationssoftware fehlt, daf¨¹r gibt's die Java-Version von Google Maps mit Routenplaner und der bewährten Suche.Die ¨¹brige Ausstattung ist solide, birgt aber keine positiven ¨¹berraschungen: Extras wie WLAN fehlen, und die Kamera knipst mit gerade mal 2 Megapixeln Auflösung ohne Autofokus oder Fotolicht. Ein Musicplayer samt dem dazugehörigen Steckplatz f¨¹r Speicherkarten sowie ein UKW-Radio sorgen f¨¹r etwas Unterhaltung.

13 years after BT spun out its mobile phone venture O2, BT wanted back into the game. The telco hosted a reverse auction to buy back O2 or take EE. Eventually, BT brushed off O2 to enter exclusive talks to take EE. EE is Britain's largest mobile network with 24.5 million customers and brings a ready-made 4G network infrastructure to the table, but that comes at a price: EE is a bigger firm and will be harder to integrate into BT than O2, while it's also more expensive; the deal is priced ¡ê12.5bn.BT was a mobile pioneer: it launched O2 in 1985 as a joint venture with Securicor. The new network was then called Cellnet, back when mobile phones were bricks owned only by YUPPIEs. BT bought out Securicor and rebranded BT Cellnet but then spun out the firm against a backdrop of collapsing profits, with Spanish carrier Telefonica buying O2 for ¡ê17.7bn in 2006.O2 went on to leapfrog BT to become the UK¡¯s biggest carrier ¨C 21 million mobile users versus 19.4 million on landlines for BT. It was a source of pain and regret for BT but what¡¯s changed and why would BT now want to go back? The answer, apart from profits: O2¡¯s subscriber base, as BT tries to expand out of its core business of phone and into content, hence all those Premier League football deals in recent years.

Mobile means growth in content delivery. For all the pros of EE, it's O2 that's been growing fastest, though: O2's number of mobile subscribers grew in 2014 by one million while Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and 3 collectively added just 400,000. While on paper the Yoga 2 has a fairly modest specification, but it produced scores of 2288 and 2624 when running the Home and Work suites in PCMark 8, which are more than adequate for routine tasks such as web browsing or running MS Office.

Certainly one of the most smartly designed laptops in this group, it measures up at just 17.5mm thick and weighing a very portable 1.7kg. It also clocked in at 5hours 32mins when running the PCMark battery test benchmark, so you should be able to get close to a full day¡¯s work out of it for less demanding tasks.We were tempted to include Toshiba¡¯s Kira laptop here, as that impressively manages to combine a Retina-esque 2560x1440 display with the lightweight portability of the MacBook Air. There's no backdoor or other sort of remote access ¨C the computer simply emails out its network address whenever it boots up.

Just getting the IP address may not sound like much, but it could be useful information in the hands of a determined killer, and may narrow down the location of a target, if not pinpoint it using geolocation.Syria's internet access is so fractured and scarce that mapping IP addresses to particular locations isn't impossible: imagine a person regularly using a cafe for web access; if ISIS can map the cafe's network address to its physical location, it will know exactly where that person is when he or she switches on their laptop.(This is assuming the target hasn't heard of Tor or VPNs. Of course, if the IP address leads to the wrong place, kicking down a door and slaughtering everyone inside is just a Monday morning jolly for ISIS, anyway.)In areas of the bloodstained country still run by the Assad regime, internet access is provided by the state telco, which of course has its own IP address block. So a machine running the spyware with a network address in that range could well be within those Assad-held sectors.In the north of the country, largely controlled by the Free Syrian Army and Kurdish forces, internet access is almost exclusively provided via commercial satellite internet, which again has its own IP range.

And someone with the right skills could use the leaked public IP addresses to prod a victim's machine for software vulnerabilities to exploit, leading to a full system compromise and, ultimately, death.This malware is pretty basic and buggy, we're told. Citizen Lab senior security analyst Seth Hardy told The Register that the code only sends out the initial IP discovered, and doesn't update itself, which the analysis team think is down to bad coding. The emails it sends out also don¡¯t use any encryption.On the balance of probabilities, Citizen Lab thinks it's highly likely the malware involved has been developed by ISIS. The Syrian government has its own spyware that installs a backdoor and opens link back to government agents so they can remotely control the infected PC.The other possibility is that the code has been purchased from one of many unscrupulous outfits that sell malware to the highest bidder, often quite legally. But the new sample doesn't look like it came from one of these cyber-merchants.It's not even close to commercial samples, Hardy said. It definitely looks like it has been developed internally.

Dieses Feature ist ein Luxus, der heute längst nicht mehr allen Mobiltelefonen gegönnt wird. Was der Frage Raum gibt, ob ein ganz normal genutztes 808 Pureview ¨¹berhaupt auf einen Wechselakku angewiesen ist.Ein bei vielen Nokia-Smartphones erkennbares Phänomen ist ihr relativ hoher Energieverbrauch im UMTS-Betrieb.Vom erhöhten Stromfluss bei 3G bleibt auch das 808 Pureview nicht verschont, doch Nokia hat ihm einen mit 1400 Milliamperestunden ziemlich fetten Akku spendiert. Gesprächszeiten um die elf Stunden im GSM-Netz sind mehr als genug, und selbst die gut drei Stunden bei UMTS sollten f¨¹r das Mitteilungsbed¨¹rfnis der Nutzer reichen.

Auch die im typischen Anwendungsmix im Display-Betrieb mit Internet-Nutzung, Texten, Scrollen und Lesen ermittelten knapp vier Stunden Durchhaltevermögen können normale Anspr¨¹che ohne weiteres befriedigen. Wobei das Nokia Pureview 808 nat¨¹rlich mit weit mehr als seiner Kamera zum Einsatz einlädt.So hat Nokia mit der neuesten Symbian-Version Belle ein Betriebssystem vorgelegt, dessen Oberfläche sich wunderbar den eigenen Bed¨¹rfnissen anpassen lässt. Nur der Nokia Store ist nicht ganz so ¨¹ppig gef¨¹llt wie die App-Läden von Apple und Android und ist im Schnitt auch etwas teurer.Mit auf das Smartphone ladbaren Karten und der App Fahren bringt das Nokia 808 Pureview seine eigene Navigation mit.
Doch daf¨¹r lässt es Nokia bei der mitgelieferten und der kostenlos zur Verf¨¹gung gestellten Software an einigen Stellen krachen. Etwa bei den Karten, die das Nokia 808 Pureview gegebenenfalls zum kompletten Turn-by-turn-Navisystem machen.Praktisch: F¨¹r die spontane Nutzung lässt sich der passende Ausschnitt des im Grunde die ganze Welt abdeckenden Kartenmaterials ¨¹ber das mobile Internet aufs Smartphone laden. F¨¹r den Urlaub im Ausland kann der Nokia-User die passenden Karten hingegen vorab speichern, um so Roaming-Geb¨¹hren zu sparen.

Bedienen lässt sich das Nokia bestens, da es mit seinem 1,3-GHz-Single-Core-Prozessor flink agiert. Auch der Hauptspeicher ist mit 16 Gigabyte, von denen ¨¹ber 12 GB verf¨¹gbar sind, recht ¨¹ppig bemessen. Zumal per Micro-SD-Card nachger¨¹stet werden kann - Speichermangel ist so kein Thema.Neben dem Betriebssystem, einem leistungsfähigen Prozessor und gen¨¹gend Speicher spielt auch das Display eines Smartphones eine zentrale Rolle. Hier ¨¹berzeugt der 3,7-Zoll-OLED-Screen des 808 Pureview mit starken, blickwinkelstabilen Farben qualitativ voll.F¨¹r die Nutzung des Browsers und die Vorschau von Dokumenten könnte aber die Auflösung noch höher sein. Das Pixel-Plus käme auch der Nutzung als Fotoapparat entgegen, genau wie mehr Helligkeit f¨¹r den Einsatz im Freien. Wobei das Display des 808 Pureview den Bildschirmen vieler Kompaktkameras schon weit ¨¹berlegen ist.Auch beim Blitz sucht Nokia mehr die Nähe zu kompakten Digitalkameras als zu Smartphones. Der Xenon-Blitz leuchtet nicht allzu große Entfernungen sehr gleichmäßig aus. Damit man auch im Stockdunkeln sein Motiv findet, hat das Nokia 808 Pureview neben diesem echten Blitz noch eine Foto-LED, die bei Ber¨¹hren des Auslösers f¨¹r kurze Zeit schwach Licht spendet, vom Fotografen aber gute Augen und eine schnelle Reaktion fordert.

Wer seine Fotos oder Videos abseits von Facebook, Youtube, Flickr und Co. Freunden und Verwandten zeigen möchte, kann sowohl ¨¹ber DLNA als auch ¨¹ber Micro-HDMI den Weg zu Monitoren und Fernsehern suchen.Beim Kopieren von stehenden und bewegten Bildern kommt dann die Nokia Suite zum Zuge - die Software zur Anbindung von Nokia-Mobilgeräten an den PC. Die Suite ¨¹bernimmt auch das Management von Outlook-Daten, das bereits erwähnte Herunterladen von Karten, die Software- und Update-Installation und die Musik-Verwaltung. Sie bringt Symbian dabei einen Leistungsumfang, von dem andere Betriebssysteme nur träumen können.

Die Bildergalerie ist das zentrale Mittel, um die vielen Fotos auf dem Nokia 808 Pureview vern¨¹nftig zu organisieren.
Traumhaft leicht ist auch das Bluetooth-Pairing mit ausgewählten Nokia-Soundkomponenten: In den Deckel des Batteriefachs haben die Finnen einen NFC-Chip eingebaut, der ¨¹ber entsprechende Gegenst¨¹cke in Headsets und Lautsprechern der Marke eine schnelle, passwortfreie Kontaktaufnahme ermöglicht. Ein praktisches Einsatzgebiet der Nahbereichs-Kommunikationstechnik, von der man in den nächsten Jahren noch viel hören wird.Labormessungen: Empfang und Klangqualität sind sehr gut
In der Ausstattungswertung kommt das Nokia 808 Pureview den Top-Performern von Samsung verdächtig nahe. Und auch im Labor zeigt das Nokia, dass der Hersteller auf eine lange Tradition im Mobiltelefonbau zur¨¹ckblickt. So bietet das 808 Pureview bei UMTS gute und bei GSM sehr gute Funkeigenschaften. Damit ist sichergestellt, dass auch unter Bedingungen, die f¨¹r andere Smartphones längst kritisch wären, das Bestmögliche aus den Mobilfunknetzen geholt wird.

Und wenn die Verbindung einmal steht, ist auch das Telefonieren mit dem Nokia ein Genuss. Wie erwähnt liegt das stämmige Gerät gut in der Hand, doch dar¨¹berhinaus klingt es auch f¨¹r Anrufer und Angerufene sehr gut. Allenfalls in Kneipen w¨¹rde man sich noch eine bessere Unterdr¨¹ckung von Nebengeräuschen w¨¹nschen.Damit gelingt dem Nokia 808 Pureview etwas, an dem Spezialisten oft genug scheitern: Es erzielt eine gute Bewertung in einem Testverfahren, das sich an allgemeinen Anforderungen orientiert. Wie viele andere Smartphones auch muss sich das Nokia eine gewisse Kritik an seiner Ausdauer gefallen lassen. Anspruchsvolle Nutzer w¨¹rden sich hier einfach mehr Reserven w¨¹nschen.Einen Punkteabzug gibt's auch f¨¹r die Handlichkeit. Wobei bei Abmessungen und beim Gewicht die Gegenrechnung aufgemacht werden kann: Wer das Pureview in der Tasche hat, kann auf eine zusätzliche Kompaktkamera verzichten - ein unbestreitbrarer Vorteil. Dieser zeigte sich im Testbetrieb bei einem Ausstellungsbesuch. Auch die Handhabung unter Nokia Belle war gut.

Dass die Finnen die Messtechnik in Sachen Funk und Akustik beherrschen, beweist das Pureview auch. Wer also ein Smartphone und eine Kamera in einer Einheit sucht, der bekommt mit dem Nokia 808 Pureview ein außerordentlich gutes Gerät.Autonavigation ist keine Besonderheit mehr, auch f¨¹r den Fußgänger gibt es diverse Geräte, die einen im Großstadt- oder echten Dschungel zum Ziel f¨¹hren. Nun hat die kanadische Firma Recon Instruments ein GPS-System f¨¹r Skifahrer auf den Markt gebracht. Das Mod Live-System kann nicht nur Positionsdaten bestimmen, sondern auch das SmartphoneHier gehts zum Kauf bei Amazon mit einbinden. connect hat das Snowboard angeschnallt, die Brille aufgesetzt und die Sache im Skigebiet Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Österreich ausprobiert.Billig ist der Spaß nicht: Das Mod Live-System kostet stolze 360 Euro. Dazu muss man eine kompatible Brille kaufen, in die man den digitalen Lotsen einsetzen kann. Renommierte Hersteller wie Scott, Smith, Uvex und Alpina bieten solche Brillen an. Der Einbau bei der Alpina R-Tech f¨¹r 140 Euro ging recht einfach vonstatten: Links und rechts finden sich spezielle Aussparungen, in denen sich Akku und GPS-Sensor samt Bildschirm verstauen lassen. Um das Verbindungskabel zu verlegen, wird das Glas der Brille entfernt.

Die eigentliche Inbetriebnahme verläuft noch einfacher. ¨¹ber einen seitlichen Knopf startet das Android-basierte System. Dann verbindet sich die mitgelieferte Fernbedienung, die per Klettband am Arm befestigt wird und sich dank großer Tasten auch mit Handschuhen problemlos bedienen lässt, auf Knopfdruck automatisch via Bluetooth mit der Brille. Neben der Steuerung hat das Bedienteil auch einen Temperatursensor integriert, dessen Angaben jedoch nicht ganz exakt gerieten - möglicherweise, weil er am Arm anliegt.
Einfach ¨¹ber die Piste brettern war gestern - dank GPS-Sensor f¨¹r die Skibrille weiß man jetzt immer genau, wie schnell man wo abfährt.
Bevor es losgeht, muss noch der Bildschirm justiert werden, der sich unten links in der Brille befindet - und zwar soweit unten, dass er beim Fahren nicht stört. Das LC-Display besitzt eine Auflösung von 428 x 240 Pixeln. Dank einer Vergrößerungslinse soll das Bild eine virtuelle Größe von 11 Zoll haben. Ob das genau stimmt, ist schwer zu sagen, auf jeden Fall lässt sich alles gut erkennen. Auf dem Bildschirm erscheinen verschiedene Apps - ¨¹ber das Dashboard lassen sich Daten in Echtzeit anzeigen, darunter die Geschwindigkeit, die Höhe oder eine Stoppuhr. Je nach Gusto kann man zudem verschiedene Ansichten nutzen. Der Tacho ist so gut ablesbar, dass sich auch während der Fahrt ein Blick riskieren lässt. Dass dabei auch immer wieder die Geschwindigkeitsrekorde eingeblendet werden, macht diese Funktion f¨¹r sportlich ambitionierte Fahrer nat¨¹rlich besonders interessant. Dank Beschleunigungssensor zeichnet die Brille zudem Spr¨¹nge und deren Weite auf.

Big software outfits are looking to define microservices, the concept of decomposed applications enabled by containerisation.Microservices advocates suggest that monolithic applications that run as a single process are on the way out. Instead, they imagine that different bits of an application will run as discrete processes, all with open APIs and all swapping data furiously.Doing so is said to be a good idea because it means each microservice can be updated as and when needed, which is rather easier than updating bigger applications and therefore offers the chance for more frequent enhancements. It's also a very DevOps way of doing things.Docker is big news in microservices circles, because containers look a grand place in which to run a microservice. Google's Kubernetes, which helps to orchestrate containers and define where they run, is also often mentioned when conversation turns to microservices.In early January, VMware convened a meeting to discuss what it's called ¡°a common, totally open application blueprint definition.¡± The attendee list was impressive: Amazon, Cisco/Noiro, Cloudsoft, CoreOS, Docker, Gigaspaces, Google, HashiCorp, Mesosphere, Microsoft, OpDemand/Deis, Pivotal and Telematica all reportedly showed up.
