Finally, my own website at markpesce.com also fails this test. I¡¯m hanging my head in shame, and - with luck - by the time this column reaches you, I¡¯ll have fixed that. It¡¯s a little complicated to create an authenticated and secured HTTPS website, but generally no more than a few hours of work.Review The Mac Mini is a machine I half expected Apple to quietly drop. The decline of the desktop personal computer business in general, and the fact that you¡¯ll never see a Mac Mini as a prominent piece of product placement, means this miniature micro is unlikely to ever to hold a place in Apple's heart like the iMac.Indeed, it¡¯s been a full two years since Apple last revised the Mini, leaving many of its fans fearful that it might be on its way out, victim of changing tastes in computing products.

But no, just when you¡¯ve given up waiting for the bus and ready to plod your weary way home, along come three ¡ª units Apple would once have labelled Good, Better and Best. The year-long wait for Intel¡¯s impressive Haswell processor to come to the Mini is over, and that¡¯s very welcome. Ditto the addition of 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The quid pro quo is the loss of upgradeable RAM.Let¡¯s be clear: the Mini was never an easy upgrade. Getting the hard drive out involves removing all of the machine¡¯s internals. It still does. But at least it used to be a doddle to expand the previous incarnation¡¯s memory: rotate the base, unclip the Wi-Fi card¡¯s antenna, unscrew a metal plate, and there¡¯s your RAM slot.No longer. The base is clipped in place, and beneath the metal plate ... soldered memory. Apple¡¯s build-to-order memory is less expensive than it used to be ¡ª ¡ê80 for a 4GB upgrade from the base 4GB isn¡¯t as daunting as ¡ê80 was two years ago ¨C but it¡¯s still a darn sight less cost-effective than buying memory from someone like Crucial and fitting it yourself. Doubly so if you want 16GB.

Moreover, being able to upgrade your system as you need ¡ª rather than investing all at the start ¨C is half the point of buying a desktop rather than a laptop. The other half is better performance, though with the Mini that¡¯s perhaps less of a concern thanks to its laptop-derived parts and ultra-compact form-factor. This is not a computer for customisation.Of course, that¡¯s probably why Apple felt it could get away with its margin-enhancing plan to solder down the RAM; it¡¯s why it stopped bundling an HDMI-DVI adaptor too. No one will upgrade the Mini, it thought; you can¡¯t replace the CPU, and the graphics core is integrated so that can¡¯t be swapped out either.OK, so that¡¯s not an unreasonable assumption but it¡¯s nonetheless very disappointing for those of us who like Macs for more than their consumer convenience. You can add RAM to the iMac, for instance, so why penalise Mini buyers, especially when you already have an elegantly engineered mechanism for memory upgrades? But Apple giveth, and Apple taketh away. Obviously aware that a 5K display at this price will be tempting for many professional users, Apple has disabled the target-display mode that would have allowed you to plug a Mac Pro ¨C or even the new Mac Mini ¨C into the iMac¡¯s display in order to save money on buying an expensive 4K display.

Pricing comparisons are a bit tricky as the iMac¡¯s 5K display is currently unmatched by any of Apple¡¯s PC rivals. The 5K display recently announced by Dell is expected to sell for around $2,500 (approx ¡ê1,800 inc VAT) when it ships at the end of this year. But that price is for the display alone, so Apple could dangle an old ZX Spectrum off the back of the Retina Display and still boast about its value for money.Fortunately, the 5K iMac offers considerably more performance than a ZX Spectrum. Prices start at ¡ê1,999 for a model with an Intel 3.5GHz quad-core i5-4690 CPU with 8GB of RAM and a 1TB Fusion drive ¨C Apple¡¯s term for its hybrid HDD/SSD combo. That processor speed is only slightly faster than the 3.2GHz of the non-Retina iMac that is still on sale for ¡ê1,499, and a quick spin with GeekBench confirmed that its raw processor performance is only about 10 per cent higher. However, the Fusion drive and the inclusion of a Radeon R9 M290X graphics card give it a real performance boost in other areas.

The conventional hard drive used by the non-Retina version of the iMac could only manage read and write speeds of around 180MB/s when running the BlackMagic disk test. However, the Fusion drive of the 5K iMac was able to manage a read speed of 710MB/s and write speed of 315MB/s.Graphics performance is considerably stronger too. When running the Mac-native version of Batman: Arkham City, the 5K iMac was able to hit 55fps even at 2560 x 1440 resolution with all graphics options on their highest settings.By contrast, the non-Retina iMac could only manage 31fps, which makes the 5K iMac around 77 per cent faster on 3D graphics performance. The Mac Pro that we reviewed earlier this year managed 67fps on the same test, but that costs ¡ê2,499 without a monitor, so the 5K iMac certainly provides a better all-round combination of price and performance. An optional extra for the Fire TV is a Bluetooth-connected game controller. This is a solid affair, larger than the Fire TV itself, and relatively expensive at ¡ê35. It has a full array of controls: two analogue sticks, D-pad, 8 buttons plus three multimedia controls (play, rewind, forward), two triggers and two shoulder buttons.

Unfortunately the controller is so-so. The D-pad is stiff, the sticks are imprecise, and it lacks the polish of the best console controllers. The good news: I plugged in a wired Xbox 360 controller and it works perfectly, save for a few inessential missing buttons. The idea of the controller is that it converts the Fire TV into a budget games console, with games priced at mobile app levels. Amazon even has its own game studios, and the controller comes with a free exclusive offering, a first-person shooter called Sev Zero, normally ¡ê4.99.Hard core gamers will be snooty about this, but the graphics are good enough for Fire TV to have real potential as a low-end gaming box. Sev Zero is humdrum, but Asphalt 8: Airborne is good fun with the controller. Fire TV supports OpenGL ES 3.0 which means rich graphics are possible. The snag here is the weak ecosystem. The selection of games is small, and they are mostly designed for tablets and touch control, so whether the controller works as expected is hit and miss.

The more time I spent with Fire TV, the more annoyances I discovered. The biggest issue, which is not Amazon¡¯s fault, is lack of third-party app support. Fire TV runs Fire OS 3.0 which is based on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean); however it does not include Google Play Services. Apps are downloaded from Amazon¡¯s store and developers have to tweak their apps to run on Fire OS, and deploy them to Amazon¡¯s store. Most have not bothered, which is why the Fire OS store is sparsely populated. Going it alone is a difficult and largely friendless journey. The USB 2.0 port does not support storage devices unless you hack your device and even that is proving more difficult with more recent Fire TV software blocking rooting. So, unlike the Roku 3 (that's ¡ê20 more), you cannot play videos from external storage. Amazon¡¯s guide states that ¡°The USB port currently does not support any accessories,¡± but this is not true; I plugged in a keyboard and it worked, as did the Xbox 360 controller. Attach storage though and you get nothing, though potentially an app might be able to access it.

Hack and flash: rooting the Fire TV allows access to the Google Play Store and enables the USB port to work with storage media, but Amazon is keen to block the options to allow this
There is a mysterious lack of closed captions ¨C text in movies showing the dialogue. The Help Tips state that pressing the menu button on the remote will display them, but I could not find an example where this works. The US listings for Amazon Instant Video show ¡°cc¡± against titles that support captions, including, for example, The Dark Knight Rises. The UK site has no instances showing the ¡°cc¡±, and when I played this Batman movie I could not make captions appear. It looks as if it does not yet work on UK models, though Netflix app users may be luckier. The combo of JavaScript and HTML5 are a powerful alternative to native apps, with performance of Javascript now so close to native there¡¯s ¡°little competition.¡±Mozilla is investing in ¡°high quality web experiences¡± across all devices, he said. Part of that is galvanising developers like it did around Firefox in 2004. The company said last week it planning a Firefox ¡°for developers¡± ¨C like Microsoft on IE.

Critically, Gal believes the industry¡¯s compelling fascination with native apps for devices is now finished to the obvious benefit of the browser.¡°The browser is the main reason you turn on your computer,¡± he claimed. ¡°Look at the desktop ¨C native is dead. I turn on my machine and I go into my browser. The era of loading native apps on the desktop passed a while ago.Imagine Facebook building a native Win-32 version of its app for a PC? Just as ridiculous, he continued, to develop an iOS version and an Android version, too.Facebook is a good example: it was Mark Zuckerberg¡¯s network that canned the HTML5 edition of its app for native a few years back at the height of native fever. An HTML5 native app was a ¡°mistake¡±, Zuckerberg told Wall Street to explain his multinational¡¯s failure to hoover up mobile users. HTML5 just wasn¡¯t as slick on the UX.Others agree: native is the future.Mozilla lacks a native card to play but has a strong browser suit thanks to Firefox's breakout in the last decade. In Gal's eyes, the gap between the native and HTML5 Facebook app are really small and mobile is closing the gap on those best-of-breed native apps.

In a couple of years, it will be just as nonsensical to bring a native app to a mobile device. In a few years you will consume all your content through the browser as on the desktop. You just have to make the web competitive. What's next for Firefox in 2015? More standards plumbing and API work, improved performance of gaming in Firefox ¨C critical given the positive impact of online gaming on native app and device adoption ¨C and Firefox as a platform for online collaboration through its use of WebRTC, which has been in the Firefox nightly builds.Gaming is a very important part of the browser experience. You will see more things coming from us, Gal promised. We think gaming and WebRTC will be the highlights that you will see shine next year. Just because the Fire TV spec shows Bluetooth, don't expect to be able to connect all your devices to it. For a start, there's no Bluetooth audio support. So if you thought you could stream music to it from a Bluetooth phone or tablet, think again. Likewise, gamers and solitary movie buffs will be no doubt disappointed to discover that the Fire TV can't stream soundtracks to Bluetooth headphones either.Even though apps use a web view arrangement, there is no web browser on the device. That seems a missed opportunity especially given the very useable accuracy of the voice control. Even without it the user interface is reasonable for a sit-back experience but could be better; for instance, a zoom feature would be useful for text.
