Police ransomware of this type does not encrypt files and is normally much easier to purge from infected systems, a factor that underlines the tragedy of what transpired.Edwards was so distressed by the accusation and the extortionate demand that he took his own life hours after falling victim to the cruel scam on 6 August last year.The A-level student's developmental differences likely made him more susceptible to thinking the scam email, supposedly sent from from Cheshire police, was genuine, a coroner heard on Thursday.Edwards, who attended a mainstream school, was found hanged at his family home in Windsor, Berkshire by his mother Jacqueline Edwards, who told the coroner that he probably didn't understand the implications of his actions. A strain of police ransomware called IcePol was linked to the case, which involved extortionate demands for around $21,600. In 2012-13 the average Romanian yearly salary was just $7,200.

Big software outfits are looking to define microservices, the concept of decomposed applications enabled by containerisation.Microservices advocates suggest that monolithic applications that run as a single process are on the way out. Instead, they imagine that different bits of an application will run as discrete processes, all with open APIs and all swapping data furiously.Doing so is said to be a good idea because it means each microservice can be updated as and when needed, which is rather easier than updating bigger applications and therefore offers the chance for more frequent enhancements. It's also a very DevOps way of doing things.Docker is big news in microservices circles, because containers look a grand place in which to run a microservice. Google's Kubernetes, which helps to orchestrate containers and define where they run, is also often mentioned when conversation turns to microservices.In early January, VMware convened a meeting to discuss what it's called ¡°a common, totally open application blueprint definition.¡± The attendee list was impressive: Amazon, Cisco/Noiro, Cloudsoft, CoreOS, Docker, Gigaspaces, Google, HashiCorp, Mesosphere, Microsoft, OpDemand/Deis, Pivotal and Telematica all reportedly showed up.

On the agenda was how to define a blueprint that ¡°.... specifies all the components of an app, how they¡¯re stitched together, network and storage requirements, other service dependencies, and more¡± with the aim of making it possible for ¡°the same blueprint ¡­ to provision an app on a developer¡¯s laptop, in a staging environment, in an on-premises virtualized datacenter, and in a public cloud.¡±VMware seems to be paying special attention to microservices, as it popped out this Tweet last week.Doing #microservices development or production deployments? Instead they'll monetize users through services like Office 365.Microsoft also made clear that the Windows Phone brand is dead ¨C something we've been hearing rumors about for a while. From now on, Redmond's smartphone OS will also be known as Windows 10.Microsoft has spent more than a decade trying to build a mobile operating system that's popular yet has failed. The re-brand to Windows 10 could help the firm escape Android and iOS comparisons and might also solve the lack of applications on its platform.Key to this is the concept of universal apps. The team demonstrated PowerPoint, Outlook, and Calendar applications running on PCs and phones with the same sorts of functionality, albeit with some UI tweaks.All of the data in these applications will be switched between phones and PCs seamlessly, Microsoft promises, and users will be able to back up and sync their data to Azure. For example, pictures taken on the smartphone will be uploaded to Azure, as will be photos held locally on the PC, and the same will hold true for your music collection.

Microsoft is hoping this will encourage developers to do the same with their own applications ¨C essentially offering a write-once strategy for phones and PCs. If the model takes off, Windows smartphone users will see a big boost in the number of applications that will run on their handsets and close the gap with Android and iOS.Voice control via Cortana is also going to be a massive part of Windows 10, both on smartphones and the desktop.Cortana is being firmly embedded into Windows 10 in a way that makes Siri look like a piker. But Microsoft wants Cortana to do more than just answer questions. Based on Wednesday's demonstrations, Cortana will be taking dictation of emails (and sending them), managing search both online and off, adjusting features like map routes, and will be used to turn apps on and off via voice control.
