And security commentator Bruce Schneier was also ticked off this week, taking issue with IBM's open letter denying it handed data over to the NSA. According to Schneier, IBM's wording of the denial, such as saying it didn't hand information over to NSA under PRISM, has left Big Blue wiggle room to hide what it did hand over. He said:We know you haven't provided data to the NSA under PRISM. It didn't use that name with you. Even the NSA General Counsel said: PRISM was an internal government term that as the result of leaks became the public term. What programme did you provide data to the NSA under?It seems rather obvious that you haven't provided the NSA with any data under a bulk collection surveillance program. You're not Google; you don't have bulk data to that extent. So why the caveat? And again, under what program did you provide data to the NSA?He also argues that IBM has played a game of geographical semantics to hide what went on as well:

Okay, so you say that you haven't provided any data stored outside the US to the NSA under a national security order. Since those national security orders prohibit you from disclosing their existence, would you say anything different if you did receive them? And even if we believe this statement, it implies two questions. Why did you specifically not talk about data stored inside the US? And why did you specifically not talk about providing data under another sort of order?And finally, a man has triumphed in the UK's Supreme Court after a 16-year legal battle over a laptop he bought at PC World. Richard Durkin attempted to buy a laptop in 1998 with just one requirement - a modem. As the sales assistant was unsure about the model's specs, they said he could take it away and bring it back the next day if there wasn't any modem. They took a £50 deposit and signed him up to a credit agreement.Naturally, the laptop didn't have a modem so he tried to return it the next day. The store manager refused to accept the laptop back and kept him on the credit deal. Durkin managed to sue PC World to get his deposit back but couldn't shake the credit agreement. Even though he no longer had the laptop, HSBC-owned HFC Bank, the lender, kept demanding payment, with the result that Durkin got a black mark on his credit score.

After being marked as a defaulter, Durkin went to sheriff's court in Aberdeen where he was awarded £116,000 in damages, but that decision was overturned when he tried for a higher payout in a court in Edinburgh. Eventually, he got the right ruling in Supreme Court in London, but the court was only able to award him £8,000 because of a legal technicality. Durkin said:Although I am disappointed that the supreme court was unable to restore to me the full damages awarded by the sheriff – even though it was clear they were sympathetic to my position – this decision is a great victory for all consumers, and I am proud to have been the driving force behind it.Taking a case to any court is a huge stress, but taking it to the highest court in the land with all the risks that go with it was the most stressful thing that anyone could voluntarily put themselves through.But sometimes you have to do what is right and not what is easy. This case was not all about me – it was about principle for all consumers. I always felt that PC World and HFC Bank had acted disgracefully towards me, and I have now been proved right.

The next generation of millennial kids are a lonely group of slab-fondlers who would rather watch films and movies alone in their bedrooms, it has been claimed.According to a survey from Deloitte, teens and people in their twenties have ditched the telly and now spend more time watching stuff on their smartphones, computers or fondleslabs.“The idea that TV is only watched on a TV isn’t true any more,” said Gerald Belson, vice chairman of Deloitte's North American media and entertainment division.Deloitte's survey says 32 per cent of trailing millennials aged between 14 and 24 watch movies or TV shows on their laptop or desktop, while nine per cent use their smartphone, seven per cent use a fondleslab and 44 per cent watch television.Some 92 per cent of the “matures” group in the survey, being aged above 67, primarily watch programmes or films on the telly, with just six per cent using a laptop.“Boomers” of between 48 and 66 years old are also big telly fiends, with 88 per cent watching the goggle box.

Belson added: Consumers are often now able to watch the content they want on the device of their choosing. As an example, they have decoupled the notion that TV shows have to be watched on home TVs. This trend is particularly evident in trailing millennials, who indicated they now spend more time watching television and movie content on non-traditional devices than on TVs.The Digital Democracy survey also found that 37 per cent of Americans are now digital omnivores who own a computer, smartphone and fondleslab, a figure which has grown by 42 per cent since previous year.There has been a 33 per cent increase in tablet ownership and increased take up by women, who now make up 45 per cent of the digital omnivores.A group of Chinese researchers reckon they're close to a practical method of harvesting the static electricity you generate when tapping and swiping the screen of your smartphone as backup power for the phone itself.As anyone who's jumped back swearing at their hand when all they wanted to do was open a door in the office can attest, the human body can build up a quite considerable static charges. Turning it into useful electricity, however, is a little more challenging.

A problem this research team, led by Peking University's Bo Meng, is trying to address is to make the generator efficient without requiring that it be grounded to earth.In this paper at Applied Physics Letters, they outline their approach, in which rather than grounding their STEG (single-friction-surface triboelectric generator), the body is used as an electrode, as per this circuit diagram:“When finger taps the friction surface and separates, the two contact surfaces compose a friction pair and get electrostatically charged owing to the difference in electron-attracting abilities ... finger skin shows a tendency to donate electrons in contact electrification. After electrostatically charged, it operates similarly as an out-of-plane gap closing electrostatic generator. Under repeated tapping and separating cycles, charge moves forward and back between the induction electrode and the charged finger skin via the external loads.”

Using a surface of micro-patterned polydimethylsiloxane, the researchers claim they were able to achieve an output voltage of 200V with a current density of 4.7 micro-Amps per square centimetre. That's not about to replace the battery on your laptop computer, but the researchers say “the STEG could be a potential power source for low-power electronics, especially for wearable devices”.The Dreamcolor screen itself certainly has a je ne sais quoi about it. 10-bit colour might not sound like much, but it's 10-bit per channel RGB, so it's 30-bit in total, so we're into beeellions of colours here – or 1,073,741,824 colour variations to be precise.HP has recently released revamped standalone Dreamcolor monitors, but if you're on the move, and using an ZBook 17 equipped with one, then you'll be looking at something rather special. It's not just the colour vibrancy and depth, you also get exceptionally good viewing angles. This is probably just as well because you can open the ZBook up so that the screen lies completely horizontal, just like in the old days, and the anti-glare display also does an excellent job of minimising reflections.

In general, Windows 7 boot times are not as impressive as Windows 8, but you'll still get to the login screen in under 15 seconds. Beyond that, Adobe Premiere Pro CC took 7 seconds to load and Photoshop CC a fraction over five seconds, which should satisfy most eager creatives. The Crucial SSD takes the credit for most of the niftiness here, delivering 427MB/s read and 207MB/s write speeds in CrystalDiskMark.The PCMark 8 scores were difficult to judge as the dodgy ZBook couldn’t run the Home settings test (it kept crashing) but could manage the Work test and gave a score of 5054. By contrast, the replacement ZBook could run all the tests, but the Work score was a mere 4021, producing a best Home score of 3880. It did make me wonder whether HP had done some performance tweaking in the replacement model to get the best out of the graphics card, as this notched up an impressive casual gaming figure of 97.73fps at full HD.When put to task, the fans would chip in a bit, sounding fairly industrial from the side venting at times. Oh and if you're wondering about the battery life, the PCMark 8 benchmark clocked up 1hr 57mins, from the 8-cell 83Whr removable battery, so you can probably double that with frugal usage.

It would appear when attaching Thunderbolt devices and yet often the devices themselves wouldn't mount. As mentioned in several of my Thunderbolt storage reviews, the issue goes away when an AS Media driver is installed, enabling PCs to play nice with this abundant controller chip.Needless to say, Thunderbolt performance was plenty fast, limited only by the media and arrays being used. Moreover, using an Elgato Thunderbolt dock, additional interfacing could be accessed, but not before additional drivers were installed to get the Ethernet and USB side of this accessory working – more of an Elgato issue than HP's.

Bei Nutzung aller acht CPU-Kerne des Prozessors werden hingegen 6137 Punkte erzielt. Diese Werte liegen gemäß GSMArena grob auf demselben Leistungsniveau wie das Samsung Galaxy S8 respektive S8+. Bei den US-Varianten der neuesten Samsung-Topmodelle handelt es sich bekanntlich um die ersten marktreifen Geräte mit Qualcomms High-End-SoC.

Das HTC U 11 soll abgesehen von den aus der GeekBench-Datenbank herauszulesenden Markmalen mit einem 5,5 Zoll großem QHD Display, 64 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher, einer 12 Megapixel Hauptkamera auf der Rückseite sowie einer 16 Megapixel Selfiecam auftrumpfen. Die spannendste Neuerung dürften aber die angeblich im Metallgehäuse integrierten Drucksensoren ermöglichen. Dank diesen sollen Nutzer in die Lage versetzt werden, durch „Quetschen“ oder „Streichen“ des Chassis mit dem Smartphone zu interagieren.

Amazon hat eine wichtige Änderung für sein Underground App Programm für Android-Geräte und Fire-Tablets angekündigt. Über die App werden sich spätestens ab 2019 keine kostenlosen Programme mehr beziehen lassen. Darüber hinaus wird der Online-Riese bereits ab Ende Mai 2017 keine neuen kostenlosen Apps mehr in den Underground-Store aufnehmen.

Die Entscheidung Amazons, in Zukunft keine Android-Apps mehr kostenlos über den Underground-Marktplatz anzubieten, bedeutet jedoch nicht das Ende des gesamten Stores. Das US-Unternehmen wird die Underground-App weiter für Android-Geräte und Fire-Tablets anbieten. Darin kann also dann wie gewohnt etwa im Amazon-Produktsortiment oder im Prime Video Angebot gestöbert werden.

Das Ende für die kostenlosen Underground-Apps erfolgt laut Amazons Angaben in mehreren Stufen. Für beliebige Android-Geräte ist Sommer 2017 der grobe Termin, bis zu dem die Underground-Apps noch verwendet werden können. Für die aktuellen Fire Tablets von Amazon sieht es hingegen anders aus. Bei diesen Geräten werden die besagten Apps bis 2019 funktionieren. Amazon schließt jedoch schon jetzt potentiell kommende Fire-Tablets explizit von dem Programm aus. Entwickler müssen außerdem beachten, dass sie nur noch bis Ende Mai 2017 neue Apps für das Programm beim US-Konzern einreichen können. Danach wird es ihnen Amazon gestatten, Apps bis zum endgültigen Aus des kostenlosen Angebots, mit Updates zu versorgen, und sie werden auch bis dahin weiter vom Online-Riesen (je nach Nutzungszeit einer App) ausbezahlt.

Den Underground Appstore hatte Amazon Mitte 2015 eröffnet und es finden sich dort laut offiziellen Angaben inzwischen rund 800.000 Apps. Einen exakten Grund für das Ende des kostenlosen Angebots nennt Amazon nicht, sondern merkt nur an, dass es nun neue Möglichkeiten für Entwickler bereitstelle, Geld zu verdienen.

Nutzer eines handelsüblichen Android-Geräts können nicht ohne Weiters auf die Underground App von Amazon zuzugreifen, da sie nicht im Google Play Store erhältlich ist. Das Programm muss also von einer Amazon-Webseite aus manuell heruntergeladen und dann installiert werden. Bei seinen Fire Tablets liefert Amazon die App ab Werk direkt mit aus.

Unter den im vergangenen Jahr vorgestellten Features des Windows 10 Creators Updates befand sich auch eine neue Form von Kontakt- beziehungsweise Kommunikationsverwaltung für das Desktop-Betriebssystem. Microsoft konnte diese Neuerung allerdings nicht rechtzeitig fertigstellen und strich es somit von der Feature-Liste der seit Anfang April ausrollenden finalen Fassung der Windows 10 Version 1703. Nun ist die Funktion aber unter der Bezeichnung „My People“ zurück. Es wird Teil der im kommenden September erwarteten nächsten Hauptversion des OS sein und kann ab sofort von Windows Insidern getestet werden. Voraussetzung dafür ist die Installation der heute im Fast Ring veröffentlichten Insider Preview Build 16184.

Das neue My People Feature für Windows 10 erlaubt es Nutzern unter andrem, eine Reihe von Kontakten direkt auf der Taskleiste anzuheften und auf Kommunikations- und Sharing-Tools sowie Chats einfach und schnell zuzugreifen. Zum aktuellen Entwicklungsstand ist das Ganze aber noch nicht ausgreift und wird auch noch reichlich Feintuning vom Windows-Team erhalten.

Zusätzlich zur genannten Neuerung beinhaltet Build 16184 außerdem eine überarbeitete Mail und Kalender App, die besser mit Googles Gmail Dienst zusammenarbeitet und für Gmail-Nutzer einige Funktionen bereitstellt, die bislang Outlook.com und Office 365 Konten vorbehalten waren. Dazu zählt etwa ein fokussierter Posteingang, der unbedeutende E-Mails schon beim Eintreffen automatisch aussortiert, sowie die Anzeige von zu Reisebuchungen oder Lieferungen gehörenden Daten im Kalender.

Wie immer bei Insider Builds im Fast Ring gilt, dass sich nur erfahrene Nutzer mit einem nicht für den alltäglichen Einsatz benötigten PC an die Installation wagen sollten. Microsoft führt selbstverständlich auch für Build 16184 in einem offiziellen Blog-Beitrag eine Liste mit bekannten Problemen sowie eine mit Verbesserungen auf. Ganz allgemein sollte aber bedacht werden, dass das Unternehmen noch ziemlich am Anfang seiner Arbeiten an der nächsten Windows 10 Hauptversion steht, die bislang nur unter dem Codenamen Redstone 3 bekannt ist. Mit vielen Details und der Enthüllung neuer Windows 10 Features darf aber schon im Rahmen der am 10. Mai beginnenden Entwicklerkonferenz Build 2017 gerechnet werden.

Apple hat Preissteigerungen für seinen deutschen sowie andere App Stores der Eurozone angekündigt. Wie der US-Konzern gegenüber Entwicklern mitteilte, werden in im Laufe der nächsten sieben Tage die Preise für iPhone-, iPad- und Mac-Apps aufgrund von Wechselkursanpassungen um rund 10 bis 15 Prozent erhöht werden.

Die Hintergründe der Preiserhöhung kommentiert Apple wie gewohnt nicht weiter. Die letzte derartige Anpassung des Unternehmens für Euro-Länder ist allerdings mittlerweile über zwei Jahre her. Zudem ist erwähnenswert, dass sich die Preisänderungen explizit auf App-Downloads und In-App-Käufe beziehen, jedoch nicht auf App-Abonnements, die regelmäßig automatisch verlängert werden - sofern der Nutzer nicht aktiv einschreitet und die Zahlungen beendet.

In konkreten Zahlen ausgedrückt werden in Folge der Preissteigerung Apps für iOS-Geräte und Macs schon bald im günstigsten Fall nicht mehr 0,99 Cent, sondern 1,09 Euro in Apples App Store beziehungsweise Mac App Store kosten. Ein weiteres Beispiel sind Apps, die bislang für 5,99 Euro angeboten wurden, für die Apple aber demnächst 6,99 Euro kassieren wird.

Wie heise online zu dem Thema anmerkt, müssen App-Entwickler trotz der von Apple angekündigten Änderungen nicht zwangsläufig auf die höheren Preisen umschwenken. Falls ein Entwickler wünscht, seine App weiter für beispielsweise 0,99 Cent anzubieten, kann er dies manuell so festlegen. Dasselbe gilt auch für andere von Apple vorgegebene Preisstufen. Es ist allerdings höchst unwahrscheinlich, dass sehr viele Entwickler diesen alternativen Weg gehen, zumal Erträge insbesondere aus günstigen iOS-Apps ohnehin für einen Großteil nicht gerade spektakulär sind. Apple behält 30 Prozent eines jeden App-Verkaufs ein, während Entwickler 70 Prozent des Nettoverkaufspreises erhalten.

Hinsichtlich App-Abonnements gestaltet Apple seit letztem Jahr die Umsatzbeteiligung für Entwickler etwas lukrativer. Im ersten Jahr des Abos kassiert der iPhone- und Mac-Hersteller zwar ebenfalls 30 Prozent des Verkaufspreises, ab dem zweiten Jahr sinkt dieser Wert jedoch auf 15 Prozent. Das ist also der Grund dafür, warum sehr viele kostenpflichtige Apps mittlerweile zumindest alternativ auch als Abo-Dienst bezogen werden können.

Samsungs neue Flaggschiff-Smartphones Galaxy S8 und Galaxy S8+ sind ab heute ganz offiziell auf dem europäischen respektive deutschen Markt erhältlich. Passend dazu hat der südkoreanische Hersteller nun laut Sammobile damit begonnen, ein wichtiges Update für die Geräte auszuliefern. Die neue Firmware soll bei einigen Exemplaren, deren Display einen Rotstich aufweist, dafür sorgen, dass sich der Anzeigefehler vom Nutzer selbst korrigieren lässt.

Wie bereits zuvor berichtet, hatten unter anderem einige Vorbesteller des Galaxy S8 (zu unserem Test geht's hier) beziehungsweise S8+, die ihr schickes, neues Smartphones bereits erhalten haben, über einen Rotstich des 5,8 oder 6,2 Zoll großen Infinity Displays geklagt. Samsung reagierte zügig auf die Kritik und beruhigte die Gemüter mit der Aussage, es handle sich dabei nicht um einen Hardware-Fehler, sondern ein Konfigurationsproblem, das mit Hilfe eines Updates aus der Welt geschafft werden könne.

Den neusten Infos nach ist eben diese Aktualisierung nun fertig und wird für die Samsung-Geräte mit der Firmware-Versionsnummer „G950NKSU1AQDG“ und „G950NKSU1AQDG“ als sogenanntes OTA-(over the air)-Update weltweit ausgerollt. Wie im Grunde immer bei solchen Updates erfolgt die Verteilung allerdings in mehreren Wellen, gestaffelt nach Region und Mobilfunkanbieter. Deutschland gehört bislang aber offenbar noch nicht zu den Ländern, in denen die neue Firmware zum Download angeboten wird. Begonnen hat der Hersteller auf seinem Heimatmarkt Südkorea.

Samsung ändert laut Sammobile durch das Update die Farbdarstellung des S8(+) Displays nicht automatisch, sondern stellt Anwendern vielmehr neue Konfigurationsmodi für den Bildschirm zur Verfügung, über die sich etwa die Farbtemperatur anpassen lässt. Dadurch sollte also das Problem einer etwas zu rötlich wirkenden Darstellung manuell korrigiert werden können.

Von diesen Änderungen am Einstellungsmenü der Galaxy S8 Reihe abgesehen ist im Moment nicht bekannt, ob Samsung mit dem neuen Update noch weitere Änderungen vornimmt.

Microsoft will zukünftig Aktualisierungen für Windows 10 PCs nicht mehr nur exakt nach Plan am sogenannten „Patch Tuesday“ eines Monats veröffentlichen, sondern zusätzlich mindestens ein kumulatives Update (bei Bedarf auch mehr) im Monatsrhythmus für alle Nutzer ausliefern. Wie der Softwareriese jüngst angekündigt hat, sind davon allerdings Sicherheitspatches explizit ausgenommen.

Synology's success owes much to its web top GUI, accessed through a browser, which is now polished and mature and, thankfully, doesn't suck up system resources. If you can't remember the IP address you've allocated to the box and port (5050) you'll need to download the DSAssistant app for Windows or Mac. This finds the servers on your network and also you to monitor their status.One minor glitch it threw at me was complaining that it needed the latest version of Java. Tech support established this wasn't a complaint about the DiskStation, but about the Mac client I was using.The DS214 I received as a test unit carried the 4.2 software, but not so long ago Synology made the 4.3 update available as a download. In this, the PhotoStation photo streamer gets spruced up, and some other useful features are bundled. At long last, Diskstations now support Mac-formatted (HFS+) disks, something Synology's great rival Qnap has been able to boast for ages.

I was also pleased to see bandwidth throttling per user and per protocol added, although 4.2 had already made ground here. Microsoft's Offload Data Transfer (ODX) file protocol is also added, allowing servers to transfer files between iSCSI partitions faster with lower CPU and IO strain. It's supported in Windows 8 Explorer.For users with more money than sense, the SSDs are better supported than before, thanks to support for the TRIM command. Of course, you saturate the bottleneck of the network I/O far sooner than you'll soak up the disk I/O bottleneck, in which case why use an SSD in a NAS unit? Perhaps if you've got very acute hearing and the low noise of the disks starting up is still too much.Running a home server may have once sounded ludicrous, but the low power consumption of the ARM board and aggressive power management of modern drives make them very unobtrusive. They can be set to power up and down to a schedule. The official power consumption is 22.64W in access mode, 20.7W when idle, and 9W in hibernation.

However, WLAN network speeds are improving with more use of 5GHz frequencies and the 802.11ac standard - so it's worth returning to the subject once we have compliant hardware.The DiskStation can stream to your telly - Synology claims full 1080p HD is supported despite the modest ARM processor. However it's amazing to find a complete absence of any legal acquisition options either bundled or promoted - instead, the dark side of the internet is promoted as the default supply chain.
The ethics here are dubious and quite avoidable: why not work with the legal supply chain to cache a Netflix stream to avoid stuttering, TiVo style? That kind of innovation must be worth a few pence.

A home NAS box is a bit like an iPad - you don't really need one but once you have one, so many things - from backups to photo sharing - are that much easier. Synology's no-nonsense UI and ever-improving hardware are setting the pace in this competitive market. The webtop UI is getting a bit a long in the tooth, but it hits the sweet spot between dashboard UIs which conceal most of the powerful server features and the DIY approach - exemplified by this Sheeva plug server. No-tools assembly and a low price should make it even more attractive. The main difference here, is this Asus weighs a mere 1.25kg and at 288 x 204 x 19mm is only marginally more bother to lug around than 10in iPad 2 with a cover. So while the future of the PC may well be uncertain, the more we see of these lightweight, light on the wallet, low-power laptops does suggest a rather different future that isn’t in the form of an Ultrabook, if you’re prepared to make a few sacrifices.

Apart from the build quality – which is fine although plastic and the lid is a bit flimsy – those sacrifices aren’t really anything to do with Acer, it’s just providing the hardware for this platform. The C720 is easy to like, but Chrome still has its shortcomings.For instance, you’d think that with Google’s obsession with the cloud you might be able to get somewhere with a NAS box. Apparently Java often plays a part here and your mileage may vary depending on your NAS maker. Hence, using IP addresses from the browser, attempts to connect to Synology DS410 NAS failed but running an Asustor AS-304T worked just fine. This really is the sort of thing you'd hope to have resolved by apps offered in the Chrome store.

I did have some luck with the Pure Connect streaming service too and even managed to get this to hook up wirelessly to a Revo Supersignal, featured in our recent DAB-Bluetooth combo radios round-up, whilst simultaneously browsing Google Streetview.Streetview, of course, uses Flash and Chrome relies heavily on this Adobe plug-in enabler for more than compatibility with popular web sites such as Facebook. A fair amount of software featured on the Chrome Web Store is compiled as self-contained Flash apps. One of the most popular is Pixlr Editor from Autodesk. It’s the closest thing you’ll find to Photoshop for Chrome.

While it is perfectly functional and actually makes the Chrome experience bearable by providing a comprehensive range of image editing functions for nothing, it does have a rather major flaw. Unfortunately, none of the key commands work even though they’re listed alongside tasks on the various drop down menus. It seems working in this Flash-based walled garden from within Chrome needs some refinement, as the navigation is all point and click.And if image editing from a mobile appeals, then you’ll need to e-mail those pics. I tried an Apple iPhone 4S, a Nokia Lumia 820 Windows Phone and a Moto G Android handset and none of them would mount as USB drives, despite various notifications on their screens recognising a computer connection. Lest we forget printing – you’ll need to go round the houses with Google’s Cloud Print to get a hard copy, even if you’ve a printer sat next to you. As it says in the Settings info “Don't try to plug your printer into your Chromebook--it won't work!”

Swapping over to a full blown Linux alternative is easier than you might think on a Chromebook
Sure there are new printers that support Cloud Print these days, but how often do you replace a printer? Probably not as often as a laptop. Still, you do have the option to run a mainstream Linux distro alongside Google's Chrome, which is also Linux-based. One way is to use Crouton, which is a breeze. After installation, simple key commands switch between them Chrome and Ubuntu without the need for restarts. It's very straightforward to set up with Ubuntu and both share the same Downloads folder, so documents can be interchanged easily.I’ll admit I’m warming to Chrome, but it’s a relationship that’s still far from cosy. The useful app choices remain very limited and the OS still feels rough round the edges in places and the printing limitations are as annoying as ever. Yet, whatever you think about Google’s Chromebook experience, Acer has turned out a respectable, compact notebook at an affordable price with an all day battery life.

Certainly, given the cost of alternatives, such as the Asus T100 Windows 8 touchscreen convertible at £150 more, those working to a rigid budget will be taking a long hard look at this always updated, virus-free Google experience.Indeed, the dual OS set-up running Chrome and an alternative flavour of Linux is definitely appealing and the SD card slot can take care of storage expansion, if required. This combination of functional inexpensive hardware and a level of versatility should ensure the Acer C720 Chromebook will have its share of fans. The Acronis True Image WD Edition software (version 16 from 2013) insisted that I connect a WD drive first, even though the Dual Drive was connected using the adaptor cable. After a little trial and error, I found that Acronis would only play ball once I used Windows Disk Management to create a partition on the new drive. That done, I had the option to clone the original drive, clean up the disk, destroy data and so on.

Die neuesten Erkenntnisse kommen daher wie so häufig in den letzten Monaten von dem offenbar über hervorragende Kontakte in Apples Zuliefererkette verfügenden Analysten Ming-Chi Kuo. Dieser hat den Bericht des Wall Street Journal zum Anlass genommen, um die Verwirrung um die USB Typ-C-Schnittstelle so weit wie derzeit möglich aufzuklären. Kuos Worten nach liegt die US-Publikation nicht komplett falsch, Apple werde den USB Typ-C-Anschlussstandard aber nicht am Smartphone selbst einsetzen, sondern diesem lediglich ein Kabel beilegen, das an einem Ende einen damit kompatiblen Stecker und am anderen den bekannten Lightning-Stecker bietet. Der USB Typ-C-Stecker könnte in dem Fall dann entweder mit einem geeigneten Netzteil oder einem Computer mit demselben Anschlussstandard verbunden werden.

Sofern Kuos Informationen korrekt sind würde die Verwendung eines Kabels mit USB Typ-C Technologie zwei Vorteile für die Handhabung des kommenden iPhone-Topmodells mit sich bringen. Erstens könnte über ein Kabel mit dieser Schnittstelle eine höhere Spannung transportiert werden als über das „alte“ iPhone-Ladekabel mit USB-A-Stecker an einem Ende. Das dürfte also dazu führen, dass sich das iPhone 8 deutlich schneller als bisherige iPhone-Topmodelle aufladen lassen wird. Genau dies ist schließlich auch der wichtigste Grund warum beispielsweise Google bei seinen Pixel-Phones auf USB Typ-C setzt.

Ein zweiter Vorteil aus Sicht von Apple dürfte die Möglichkeit sein, das Smartphone somit direkt - sprich ohne Zuhilfenahme eines Adapter - mit einem aktuellen MacBook und MacBook Pro beziehungsweise einem modernen Windows-PC mit USB Typ-C Schnittstelle verbinden zu können. Für ältere PCs und Macs, die ausschließlich über USB Typ-A-Ports verfügen wäre in dem Fall allerdings wieder ein Adapter nötig.

Wie oben schon erwähnt ist Kuo zwar als zuverlässiger Informant rund um die iPhone-Entwicklung bekannt, aber nichtsdestotrotz ist bei der Flut aktueller Gerüchte weiterhin eine Restportion Skepsis ratsam. Die Ausführungen des Analysten erscheinen allerdings eindeutig plausibler als die vorherige Mutmaßung, nach der Apple bei seinem nächsten Flaggschiff-Produkt auf die eigene Lightning-Schnittstelle verzichten werde.

Microsoft hat mit einem offiziellen Blog-Beitrag jüngst näher über Neuerungen des kommenden Windows 10 Creators Updates informiert, durch die Anwender mehr Kontrolle über die Art und Weise wie Updates eingespielt werden erhalten sollen. Windows Insider können diese Änderungen bereits seit geraumer Zeit in den im Fast Ring veröffentlichten Test-Builds sehen. Die finale Fassung der nächsten großen Windows 10 Hauptversion wird aller Voraussicht nach im April für Jedermann zu bekommen sein.

Zunächst einmal erhalten Anwender durch das Creators Update die Möglichkeit, einen bestimmten Zeitpunkt festzulegen, an dem neue Software-Aktualisierungen für Windows 10 eingespielt werden. Dieser Zeitpunkt kann stets auch wieder verändert werden, falls er sich einmal als unpassend herausstellen sollte. Bislang war es so, dass lediglich ein Nutzungszeitraum vom Anwender spezifiziert werden konnte, während dem das Betriebssystem dann davon absah, neue Updates einzuspielen, um Arbeitsprozesse nicht zu stören.

Apropos Nutzungszeit: Microsoft hat im Creators Update auch diese Einstellung leicht angepasst. Anstatt wie bislang maximal 12 Stunden können Anwender nun hierfür einen Zeitraum von bis zu 18 Stunden festlegen. Für Leute, die beruflich und privat sehr viel Zeit am PC verbringen sicherlich eine sinnvolle Änderung.

Die letzte nennenswerte Anpassung, die das Windows-Team in Sachen Update-Verwaltung vorgenommen hat, ist die Option, die Update-Installation noch im letzten Moment um drei Tage nach hinten zu verschieben. Die Schaltfläche, welche dies beim Creators Update erlaubt, erscheint automatisch sobald Aktualisierungen bereit zur Installation sind.

Microsoft will mit der erweiterten Konfigurierbarkeit des Update-Prozess unter Windows 10 ganz offenkundig dafür sorgen, dass Anwender nicht länger in den ungünstigsten Momenten durch eine anstehende Update-Installation gegängelt werden. Es ist der Versuch des Unternehmens einen guten Kompromiss aus regelmäßiger und zügiger Bereitstellung von Aktualisierungen und angenehmer Nutzererfahrungen zu bieten. Die genannten Anpassungen werden mit dem Creators Update für alle Versionen von Windows 10 ausgerollt werden.

Ebenfalls laut Microsoft auf Nutzer-Feedback basierend und mit der Absicht, bessere Nutzerkontrolle anzubieten, wurden zwei weitere kleinere Neuerungen in das Creators Update implementiert. Zum einen ist da das neue Übersichtsfenster für sämtliche Datenschutzeinstellungen des Betriebssystems zu nennen, zum anderen wurde das Kontrollzentrum für die Anti-Viren und Sicherheitssoftware Windows Defender komplett neu gestaltet.

Wenige Wochen vor der offiziellen Vorstellung des [Link/artikel/samsung-galaxy-s8-neue-fotos-datenblaetter-des-smartphones/8006/]Galaxy S8 und inmitten zahlloser Leaks rund um dieses High-End-Gerät hat Samsung noch schnell ein anderes Android-Smartphone angekündigt, das Galaxy XCover 4.

Der Nachfolger des XCover 3 ist genau wie dieses mittlerweile zwei Jahre alte Modell ein sehr robustes -Outdoor-Smartphone, das insbesondere Kunden ansprechen soll, die aus beruflichen oder privaten Gründen viel Zeit unter freiem Himmel verbringen, und damit häufig auch widrigen Wetterbedingungen ausgesetzt sind. Das XCover 4 wartet mit einem Gehäuse auf, welches nach dem US-Militär-Standard MIL-STD 810G zertifiziert ist, und damit unter anderem sowohl starken Vibrationen und Stößen als auch intensiver Sonneneinstrahlung widerstehen soll. Außerdem ist es natürlich nach IP68 gegen Wasser, Staub und Schmutz geschützt. Selbst rund 30 Minuten in bis zu 1,5 Metern Wassertiefe sollen dem Gerät nichts anhaben können.

Abgesehen von der strapazierfähigen Schale handelt es sich beim XCover 4 aber um ein unspektakuläreres Smartphone mit Hardware der unteren Mittelklasse. Das TFT-Display misst 4,99 Zoll in der Diagonalen, löst mit 1280 x 720 Pixel (HD) auf und kann auch inklusive angezogenen Handschuhen bedient werden. Zusätzlich erleichtert wird die Bedienung bei Kälte oder in Schnee und Regen durch mechanische Funktionstasten unterhalb des Bildschirms. Angetrieben wird das Outdoor-Gerät von einem nicht näher spezifizierten Quad-Core-Prozessor mit einer Taktfrequenz von 1,4 Gigahertz, dem 2 Gigabyte RAM zur Seite stehen. Der interne Speicher bietet eine Kapazität von 16 Gigabyte und kann via microSD-Karte um bis zu 256 Gigabyte erweitert werden. Die Akkukapazität wird mit 2800 mAh angegeben.

Samsung liefert das Galaxy XCover 4 ab Werk mit Android 7.0 Nougat inklusive der wie vom Hersteller gewohnt angepassten Oberfläche aus. Der europäische Marktstart des robusten Smartphones ist für April 2017 eingeplant. Die unverbindliche Preisempfehlung wird dann bei 260 Euro liegen.

Microsoft hat in dieser Woche wieder eine neue Vorschauversion des Windows 10 Creators Updates für Windows Insider im Fast Ring zum Download bereitgestellt. Die neueste Build trägt die Versionsnummer 15046 und wartet vor der anstehenden Fertigstellung der finalen Fassung des Creators Update noch einmal mit zahlreichen Fehlerkorrekturen auf.

Während das Windows-Team also hauptsächlich am Eliminieren von Bugs werkelt, was sich aller Voraussicht nach noch ein paar Wochen hinziehen wird, gibt es verständlicherweise nicht mehr viel Raum zum Implementieren neuer Features. Nichtsdestotrotz haben es aber noch einmal ein paar kleinere sichtbare Änderungen in die aktuelle Preview-Build geschafft. Diese betreffen laut Microsofts Angaben im zur Build 15046 gehörenden Blog-Beitrag unter anderem den digitalen Assistenten Cortana, die Sicherheitssoftware Windows Defender und die neue Gaming-Rubrik in der Einstellungen-App.

Die erwähnten Anpassungen sind fast alle nur kosmetischer Natur (veränderte Icons und Farben). So wurde beispielsweise im Fall von Windows Defender das Symbol in der Taskleiste verändert, um Nutzer klarer über den aktuellen Viren-

und Malware-Schutzstatus zu informieren, und ihnen schnellen Zugriff auf die Einstellungen der Software zu gewähren. Eine weitere Änderung betrifft allein die nicht-englischsprachigen Versionen der Windows 10 Insider Preview. Microsoft will der Übersetzung von Oberflächenelementen und mehr in unterschiedliche Sprachen den nötigen Feinschliff verpasst haben. Ein weiteres Indiz dafür, dass die Fertigstellung des Creators Updates nun kurz bevorsteht.

Data deletion jobs rose from 4,812 in 2011 to 6,442 last year.

The endpoint security and computer management firm notes that organisations are under pressure to adhere to stricter data breach compliance, such as the European data protection laws. The sooner an organisation can secure a stolen device and render the data on it unusable to thieves, the easier it is for it to prove there hasn’t been a data breach.” More details have begun to trickle out regarding Microsoft's second-generation Surface fondleslabs, which are expected to ship in the fall.

On Wednesday, Neowin reported that new versions of both the Intel-based Surface Pro and the ARM-based Surface running Windows RT were in the works.Windows-watcher Paul Thurrot later confirmed the report and added a few details from his own sources, such as that the new ARM version would simply be called Surface, dropping the previous generation's RT moniker.Few other details have emerged about Microsoft's follow-up to 2012's $900m albatross, except that it will once again be built around a Tegra chip from Nvidia. Based on what has emerged about the new Surface Pro, however, the new Surface will likely be more of an incremental update than a radical redesign.According to both Neowin and Thurrot, the second-generation Surface Pro will run on a Haswell-based Core i5 processor from Intel, which should help with one the first generation Pro's major shortcomings: battery life. Thurrot claims the new tablet will be rated for up to seven hours of run time, rather than the first Surface Pro's five.

Both reports suggest that the system's RAM will be boosted from 4GB to 8GB, although Thurrot believes the beefier configuration will be an option, rather than the default.Neowin believes the new slates will look similar to the current Surface Pro. Thurrot says they'll look identical. With any luck, that will mean the magnetic cover connector will also be unchanged, allowing existing Surface keyboard covers to work with the new models.Redmond has cooked up at least one external modification to its tablets, however. The first-generation Surface slabs included a simple kickstand for propping up the screen when you want to use the device as a laptop. For the new models, Microsoft has reportedly refined the kickstand; Neowin isn't sure what that means, but Thurrot says the new version can lock into two distinct positions.Neither report included any information on pricing, as you might expect at this stage. Thurrot reckoned – reasonably – that any price he quoted today could very easily change by the time the devices shipped. But price could prove to be the make-or-break factor for the second-generation Surfaces, given the deep discounts Microsoft has been forced to offer on the earlier models.

Nothing concrete has been said about the launch date of the new fondleslabs, either. But if history repeats itself, the new Surface running Windows RT could be formally unveiled on October 18, 2013, the official launch date of Windows 8.1.The original Surface RT went on sale at midnight on October 26, 2012, the same date as the Windows 8 launch – which, like this year's October 18, was a Friday. The original Surface Pro shipped around three months after that, but whether Microsoft will play it that way this time is anybody's guess. WD has taken the wraps off its first 2.5-inch hard drive designed for network storage roles, NAS nuts in need of a more compact connected storage box – and, crucially, teensy drives to put in it – will be pleased to hear.Part of WD’s NAS-centric Red series, the notebook form-factor drives come in 750GB and 1TB capacities. Both of these are pre-loaded with the company’s NASware 2.0 firmware - code which it claims makes the drive better able to dance to the tune of any RAID controller it is connected to.

For instance, availability requests from RAID controllers won’t be ignored during start-up self-test routines, as they often are on desktop- and laptop-centric drives. Die vorzeitige Vertragsauflösung begründet keinen Anspruch auf Rückerstattung bereits geleisteter Zahlungen für kostenpflichtige Produkte.

Der Anbieter behält sich bezüglich der Produkte inklusive Layout, Software und deren Inhalte sämtliche Urheber- und sonstigen immateriellen Rechte vor. Insbesondere ist das Veröffentlichen, Ändern, Anbieten, Veräussern, Vervielfältigen, sowie Verbreiten, Wahrnehmbarmachen, Versenden, Vermieten und Lizenzieren der redaktionellen und anderen Inhalte des Anbieters (Texte, Tabellen, Bilder, Videos, Grafiken, Programme und sonstige Dienstleistungen und Medienangebote) nur mit dessen vorgängiger ausdrücklichen schriftlichen Zustimmung erlaubt. Unzulässig ist weiter das Herstellen, die Übertragung und der Verkauf von Werken zweiter Hand. Leserkommentare etc.) haben deren Verträglichkeit mit der geltenden schweizerischen Rechtsordnung sowie die Beachtung der Rechte Dritter zu gewährleisten, wofür der Nutzer die alleinige Verantwortung trägt. Having a phone from the company that makes the Xbox makes it feel a little less "enterprise". That is best described as a halo effect. A senior figure at the anti-virus giant McAfee once told this writer the security industry was a mess. There were too many vendors trying to do too many things. But what the industry mirrors is the threat landscape it is trying to calm down.Just look at what’s happened in the past six months. Two of the most significant breaches in the history of the web have occurred, with the attacks on US retailing firm Target and auction giant eBay. There was also the small matter of the Heartbleed vulnerability in OpenSSL, one of the most high-profile web security flaws to date. From a security perspective, things aren’t letting up and there appears to be no end in sight.One common, depressing problem that’s emerged from each of these issues is that many people just aren’t doing the old basics right. The whole security sector, from vendors to customers, needs to be sensible in its response, says Javvad Malik, analyst from 451 Research.

“The industry’s been messy for a while now and it’s important the industry responds in a pragmatic and unified manner to try and win back confidence of businesses that investing in security isn’t a completely lost cause. We’re still bad at managing the basics, patching, privilege identity management, tools that overload users with alerts within which important issues can be missed,” Malik says.Whilst IT teams are often told they need a new approach to protecting the business, they have to get the old problems nailed first.Beyond the rudimentary matters, though, coping with these manifold problems effectively will require traditional protections to change and new ones to emerge from research labs and find their way into businesses. “As the internet touches more and more areas of our lives – smart devices, currencies such as Bitcoin, cloud and virtualisation – simply reacting to threats is no longer the most effective way to protect both individuals and organisations,” says David Emm, senior security researcher at Kaspersky Lab.That does not mean killing anti-virus, however, even if the traditional signature-based approaches have failed. Modern AV systems, the best ones, at least do some heuristic and reputation analysis, rather than just try to detect malicious software that’s already been seen in the wild.

Emm says malware detection technologies should look beyond the static and evaluate objects or applications within the context of a specific environment, questioning what it’s doing there, what it’s connecting to and what it has been designed to do compared with its expected behaviour.“This enables security experts to identify anything that is being used for nefarious purposes before an attack has been carried out,” he adds.“There have been those who have said that ‘AV’ protection is dead but what this really means is that we have to go beyond traditional signature-based protection and use more sophisticated technologies including heuristics, sandboxing, proactive behaviour detection, cloud-enabled threat intelligence, application control, automatic exploit prevention, secure banking and more.”Outside of malware problems, the rise of mobile has brought about a dismantling of the IT perimeter. That’s why the firewall has also taken a battering in recent years. And yet it still survives as a technology, whether in the traditional or “next-generation” sense. Rather than taking down the firewall, the response to the death of the perimeter should be based on a layered approach, not a rip and replace strategy, says Professor Alan Woodward, of the computing department at the University of Surrey.“I think we can take lessons from how physical security has been mounted historically: something as simple as a castle didn’t have just one wall. “Defence in depth has to be seen as the default approach. With the rise of insider threats and spear phishing attacking those with privileged access, the perimeter is becoming less of an absolute barrier to intruders but is still causing some attacks to bounce off so it would seem a little silly to simply let it crumble.”Emm says such an approach needs to focus more on the individual, rather than attempt blanket security measures. “People do still work in the office, connecting to corporate servers so that network still needs to be protected. However, the workspace has become more diverse in that many people will work from home on a laptop or on the move with their smartphone or tablet,” Emm adds.“This leads to a host of additional security issues - from people logging on to insecure Wi-Fi networks that could potentially be being watched by cybercriminals, to losing their device on public transport - and it is these devices that are not protected by traditional policies, firewalls, endpoint protection and mail filtering that exist in offices.

“We therefore need to look at a security solution that protects the individual, taking into account new devices and policies and procedures for untrusted environments – i.e. ‘follow-me’ security.”This all points to a need for better intelligence systems, ones that can alert organisations to anomalies on the network caused by zero-day threats and access inconsistencies, whilst allowing for greater analysis of attacker behaviour. The most effective are likely to be based on Big Data technology, ones that can draw together different data types to determine the nature of the threat. Use of Hadoop and big data warehousing projects will likely be the domain of large enterprises. Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) technologies will likely be suitable for smaller enterprises, the most attractive being those that allow for actionable intelligence and pull in as many different sources as possible.Proper intelligence solutions aren’t just thought to be useful in understanding the adversary, they’re also likely to save businesses money. Research from the Ponemon Institute last year, looking at 234 breached organisations, showed those who invested in security intelligence systems gained average cost savings of nearly $2m in comparison to those who didn’t.Microsoft has pitched its Surface Pro 3 as a "tablet that can replace your laptop." That is unless, it seems, you want to repair or upgrade your laptop.

Teardown specialists iFixit have posted their initial dissection of the latest Redmond tablet, and they've concluded that the surface on the Surface is poor for service.The third generation of Microsoft's high-end tablet received a repairability score of one out of a possible 10 – iFixit's lowest.Among the issues noted by the company was the use of non-standard connectors, an unreplaceable battery, and extensive use of heavy adhesives that make opening and servicing components in the tablet nearly impossible.Perhaps the biggest worry with the Surface Pro 3, says iFixit, is the screen itself. During the early steps of the teardown process, loosening and prying open the outer casing from the display, the researchers spotted cracks.The small fissure quickly spread through the screen, and the iFixit crew said that it had to tape up the display in order to prevent it from falling apart outright."The delicate and arduous opening procedure leaves no room for mistakes: one slip-up, and you'll be out a screen," they wrote.Even if one can pull open the display, the Surface take-apart effort found that other measures from Redmond make servicing the device extremely difficult. While the SSD was found to be accessible and fairly easy to replace, other components such as the battery pack were glued into the tablet's casing to the point of being impossible to remove without causing permanent damage.

To be fair, few if any tablet systems these days fall under most peoples' definitions of repairable. Vendors are able to squeeze a tablet's guts into their svelt enclosures by using glue to secure components, along with other space-saving measures that make DIY repairs difficult to impossible. Apple, for example, receives similarly low repairability scores for many of the same reasons.That the Surface Pro 3 wouldn't even survive a case opening, however, could be seen as cause for concern about overall durability.The team at iFixit has performed hundreds of such teardowns in the past, and hardly qualifies as ham-fisted when it comes to handling delicate components. Indeed, the company makes its living selling users the very tools that allow for the opening of mobile devices without cracking screens or warping battery packs."Microsoft went to great lengths to make the Surface Pro 3 super portable, thinning it down from the Pro 2's 0.53in to a mere 0.36in thick," the DIY repair site noted.

Impressively, there's no sign of bargain basement build quality, something that couldn't really be said of the first generation MeMO Pad 7. The whole thing feels as solid as a rock while the screen is made from some sort of toughened glass. The nicely rounded matt finish rear is rather pleasant to the touch too.Physically the new Asus is par for the 7-inch tablet course. At 113.7 x 189.3 x 9.6mm and weighing 295g, to all intents and purposes, it’s the same as the MkII Nexus 7.The only ergonomic hitch is the positioning of the power and volume buttons on the right. They are too much on the back rather than the side and don't fall easily to the touch, something exacerbated by the power button being below the volume rocker which feels the wrong way around to me. The memory card slot doesn't have a cover but cards slot far enough in for this to not be an operational problem.

Wenn Apple in diesem Herbst mindestens ein neues iPhone-Modell vorstellt, das ein randloses Display und 3D-Scanning-Technologie mitbringt, wird da kalifornische Unternehmen nicht der erste Smartphone-Hersteller sein, der derartige Funktionen in seine Geräte integriert. Android-Smartphones wie das Samsung Galaxy S8 oder auch das kommende Essential Phone weisen vergleichbare Merkmale auf. Allerdings könnte es Apple in mittlerweile gewohnter Tradition einmal mehr gelingen, grundsätzliche bekannte Technologien besser als je zuvor in einem Produkt zu verarbeiten. Wie das finale Urteil der Nutzer ausfallen wird, bleibt erst einmal abzuwarten.

Eine zentrale Frage hinsichtlich des Industriedesigns und der Ausstattung des diesjährigen High-End-iPhones können aber leider auch die jüngsten Enthüllungen nicht beantworten: Was hat sich Apple angesichts des Edge-to-Edge-Touchscreens für den Fingerabdrucksensor Touch ID, der bei bisherigen iPhones in der Home-Taste intergriert war, einfallen lassen? Kann dieser Sensor dank der neuen Gesichtserkennungstechnologie komplett gestrichen werden? Sitzt Touch ID nun direkt unterhalb des Displays? Hat der Konzern den Sensor gar auf die Rückseite verbannt oder aber vielleicht doch in der Power-Taste integriert?
Microsoft hat erst vor wenigen Tagen den Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16251 für Tester im Fast Ring veröffentlicht, der mitunter Neuerungen für den virtuellen Assistenten Cortana, Änderungen am Boot-Prozess sowie die Möglichkeit, ein Android-Smartphone mit einem Windows 10 PC zu koppeln, mit sich brachte. Rechtzeitig zum Wochenende hin lässt der Softwareriese nun wissen, dass Letzteres ab sofort auch mit einem iPhone gelingt.

Microsoft hatte zur Entwicklerkonferenz Build 2017 im vergangenen Frühjahr ausführlich darüber gesprochen, wie es künftig Windows 10 PCs enger mit Android- sowie iOS-Smartphones zusammenführen wolle. Zu einem gewissen Grad werden sich die Früchte dieser Initiative bereits in dem im Herbst erwarteten Fall Creators Update finden lassen, wie nun aktuell die Vorschauversion 16251 demonstriert. Derzeit bringt die Verknüpfung zwischen Windows 10 und einem Smartphone aber lediglich den Nutzen, dass Webseiten-Links vom Smartphone-Browser aus mit dem PC geteilt werden können.
Windows 10 Nutzer, die sich selbst einen ersten Eindruck von dieser und weiterer kommender Neuerungen des Fall Creators Updates machen möchten, müssen zunächst Teilnehmer des Windows Insider Programms werden – sofern sie dies nicht bereits sind- und sich für den schnellen Empfang neuer PC-Builds (Fast Ring) registrieren, um sodann den Insider Preview Build 16251 installieren zu können. Ist dies geschafft, kann unter Einstellungen der neue Menüpunkt „Phone“ angewählt werden, unter dem es möglich ist, ein Smartphone mit dem Desktop-OS zu koppeln. Wenn auch das erledigt wurde, sollte auf dem Smartphone automatisch eine SMS eingehen, die den Nutzer schlussendlich zur Installation der Android- oder iOS-App „Microsoft Apps“ anleitet.

Mit Hilfe der Anwendung Microsoft Apps existiert nun auf einem Android-Smartphone oder iPhone ein Weg, um während des Surfens mit dem jeweiligen Standard-Browser (also Chrome oder Safari) ganz nach Bedarf oder Laune die gerade aufgerufene Webseite an den verknüpften Windows 10 PC zu senden und dann dort weiterzulesen. Microsoft will diese Funktionalität in den kommenden Monaten weiter ausbauen, um so künftig mehr solcher Plattform-übergreifender Interaktionsmöglichkeiten anbieten zu können. Ziel ist vermutlich eine ähnliche Nutzererfahrung wie sie Apple rein innerhalb seines eigenen Ökosystems mit dem Feature „Continuity“ bereitstellen kann.

LG hat mit dem Q6 ein neues interessantes Mittelklasse-Smartphone im Portfolio, welches ab Ende August auch auf dem deutschen Markt erhältlich sein wird. Bei dem Gerät kombiniert der südkoreanische Hersteller einige der interessantesten Merkmale des aktuellen Flaggschiffs G6 mit einem weniger leistungsfähigen SoC sowie weiteren Einsparungsmaßnahmen, um einen Preispunkt von deutlich unter 400 Euro zu erreichen.

Das wohl herausragende Feature des neuen LG Q6 ist sein 5,5 Zoll großes Display, welches analog zu dem des G6 eine nur schmale Einfassung aufweist und abgerundete Ecken sowie ein Seitenverhältnis von 18:9 bietet. Im Gegensatz zum teureren Schwestermodell beträgt die Panel-Auflösung beim neuen Mittelklasse-Gerät „nur“ 2160 x 1080 Pixel, womit aber dennoch ein sehr hoher ppi-Wert von 442 erreicht wird.

Im Gehäuseinneren des 149 Gramm schweren und 142,5 x 69,3 x 8,1 Millimeter messenden Q6 verbaut LG ein Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 SoC, das insgesamt acht CPU-Kerne mit bis zu 1,4 Gigahertz Taktfrequenz integriert. Des Weiteren finden dort 3 Gigabyte RAM, 32 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher, ein LTE-Modem sowie ein 3000-mAh-Akku und ein Funk-Modul, welches WLAN nach 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2 plus NFC unterstützt, Platz.

Die Kameratechnik des neuen LG-Geräts kann sich – zumindest auf dem Papier - ebenfalls sehen lassen, wenngleich hier natürlich keine Wunder erwartet werden sollten. Als Highlight bewirbt der Hersteller gewissermaßen die 100-Grad-Weitwinkel-Frontkamera für Selfies, die rückseitige Hauptkamera schießt Fotos und Videos mit einem 13 Megapixel Sensor.
LG installiert als Betriebssystem die derzeit aktuellste Android-Version 7.1.1 Nougat auf dem Q6 vor – inklusive der neuesten Ausgabe seiner eigenen UX 6.0 Benutzeroberfläche. Das Mittelklasse-Smartphone wird hierzulande ab dem 21. August im Handel zu finden sein und dann eine unverbindliche Preisempfehlung von 349 Euro tragen. Für Interessenten vermutlich auch wichtig: Das Q6 wird auf dem deutschen Markt in den vier Farbvarianten „Ice Platinum“, „Astro Black“, „Terra Gold“ und „Mystic White“ erscheinen.

Bereits im vergangenen April hatte Microsoft die Arbeiten am Windows 10 Creators Update für beendet erklärt und offiziell mit dem Rollout der neuen Hauptversion ds Desktop-Betriebssystems begonnen. Allerdings merkte der Softwareriese damals auch an, dass die Verteilung in mehreren Phasen durchgeführt werden würde, und ein Teil der Nutzer daher deutlich länger bis zur automatischen Aktualisierung auf das Creators Update warten müsse als andere. Priorisiert beliefert wurden gemäß Microsofts eigenen Angaben PCs mit neuerer Hardware beziehungsweise Geräteserien, die zuvor ausgiebig getestet werden konnten. Nun ist diese Verteilung des Creators Updates in Phasen allerdings offiziell beendet.

Wie Microsoft mit einem Blog-Beitrag im Detail erläutert, ist die gezielte Belieferung von PCs mit dem Creators Update mittlerweile abgeschlossen und zugleich wird Version 1703 ab sofort für alle noch nicht versorgten Windows 10 Geräte weltweit über Windows Update zum Download bereitgestellt. Wer also das umfassende Features-Update noch immer nicht auf seinem Windows 10 Rechner erhalten oder den Download von diesem manuell angestoßen hat, der sollte nun ohne Umschweife aktualisieren können.

Eine Einschränkung gibt es allerdings für den Kreis der Geräte, die sich auf Version 1703 upgraden lassen. Wie Microsoft kürzlich bestätigte, werden ältere Laptops, Convertibles und Tablets mit Intel Atom Prozessoren der „Clover Trail“ Generation nicht vom Creators Update unterstützt. Das Unternehmen wird diese Geräte zwar eigenen Angaben nach noch bis 2023 mit Sicherheitspatches versorgen, aber mit Features-Updates für Windows 10 ist jetzt Schluss.

Aus dem Blog-Beitrag Microsofts geht des Weiteren hervor, dass der Softwareriese nun auch Firmen beziehungsweise Enterprise-Kunden gezielt dazu anregen will, Windows-10-Systeme auf das Creators Update zu aktualisieren. Microsoft wirbt mit der Aussage, Version 1703 sei bedenkenlos für die weitläufige Verteilung in Unternehmen geeignet.

In einem separaten TechNet-Beitrag informiert Microsoft außerdem, das allererste Windows 10 Feature-Update vom Herbst/Winter 2015 mit der Versionsnummer 1511, das auch als November Update bekannt ist, werde nur noch wenige Monate unterstützt. Spätestens bis zum 10. Oktober 2017 sollten Kunden, die derzeit einen PC mit dieser Windows 10 Fassung nutzen, daher auf eine neuere Windows 10 Hauptversion aktualisiert haben, um weiterhin auf regelmäßige Updates und Sicherheitspatches vertrauen zu können.

Ungeachtet der Verteilungssituation verschiedener älterer Windows 10 Feature-Updates arbeitet Microsoft aktuell bekanntermaßen zielstrebig auf die Fertigstellung der nächsten Hauptversion hin, die aller Voraussicht nach im September als Fall Creators Update erscheinen wird.

As Christmas tunes blasted away from a Google Play playlist and the Chocolate Factory’s chocolate fountain shimmered its indulgence as passing journos daubed strawberries in this edible form of streaming, I dodged the Glassholes again and wound up alongside the watches.Analysis Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella talked up the big changes he has in store for the company during a conference call with financial analysts on Tuesday. And among his plans were universal apps that can run on any Windows platform.There was little talk of layoffs, beyond what Nadella and new Microsoft phones boss Stephen Elop discussed last week. Es ist allerdings noch unklar, ob Apple all die genannten Features nur dem iPhone 8/Pro spendiert, oder ob auch die ebenfalls erwarteten iPhone 7s und 7s Plus zumindest einige dieser Neuerungen mitbringen werden.

In der Datenbank des Benchmark-Tools Geekbench wurde ein Eintrag für ein bislang unbekanntes Xperia-Smartphone von Sony entdeckt. Wie die Webseite Playfuldroid kürzlich informierte, trägt dieses Gerät die Modellnummer G8441, welche zuvor auch schon einmal in der Datenbank von AnTuTu aufgetaucht war.

Auch wenn noch nicht klar ist, auf exakt welches kommende Sony-Smartphones die beiden Benchmark-Einträge hinweisen, lassen sich anhand der technischen Daten Schlussfolgerungen ziehen. Angetrieben wird das Modell G8441 von Qualcomms aktuellem High-End-Prozessor Snapdragon 835, dem wohl 4 Gigabyte RAM und 32 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher zur Seite stehen. Des Weiteren scheinen sowohl Front- als auch Hauptkamera einen 8 Megapixel Sensor aufzuweisen und das Display lediglich eine Auflösung von 720p zu bieten.

In der Gerüchteküche wird insbesondere aufgrund der niedrigen Display-Auflösung nun davon ausgegangen, dass es sich beim G8441 um das Xperia Z1 Compact handelt, welches Sony im Rahmen der anstehenden IFA 2017 ankündigen dürfte. Der Bildschirm dieses Geräts soll eine Diagonale von 4,6 Zoll aufweisen, womit das 720p Panel gerade noch so zu verschmerzen wäre. Außerdem soll ein 2800 mAh Akku verbaut sein und das neue Android O (8.0) bereits als Betriebssystem zum Einsatz kommen.

Zusätzlich zum Z1 Compact darf von Sony selbstverständlich auch wieder mit einem größeren Flaggschiff-Modell für die zweite Jahreshälfte gerechnet werden. Dieses vermutlich als Xperia Z1 bezeichnete Modell dürfte dem Z1 Compact in vielen Ausstattungspunkten gleichen, soll aber wieder ein über 5 Zoll großes Full HD Display analog zu den bekannten Modellen Xperia XZ oder XZs mitbringen.

Am 21. Juli 2017 veröffentlichte Microsoft durchaus überraschend diverse Firmware und Treiber Updates für das inzwischen fast zwei Jahre alte Surface Pro 4. Die Aktualisierungen betrafen unter anderem das UEFI, die Funkkonnektivität und die Intel Grafikeinheit des Hybrid-Geräts. Wie Neowin nun aber informiert, beinhalteten die Updates offenbar auch einen undokumentierten Treiber für die Windows Hello Kamera des Surface Pro 4, welcher bei zahlreichen Nutzern für Probleme sorgte.

Microsoft hat sich zu der Problematik mit Windows Hello auf dem Surface Pro 4 nicht offiziell geäußert, allerdings gestern schlicht und einfach eine neue Treiberversion für „Surface Camera Windows Hello“ über Windows Update bereitgestellt. Die Versionsnummer dieses Treibers lautet 1.0.75.1.

Den vorliegenden Informationen nach führte der vorherige Treiber mit der Versionsnummer 1.0.65.1 dazu, dass bei vielen Nutzern die Anmeldung via Windows Hello nicht mehr funktionierte. Nach der Installation der neuen Treiber-Version 1.0.75.1 scheint dieses Problem aber nun wieder aus der Welt geschafft zu sein. Wir selbst konnten sowohl die Fehlfunktion als auch die Behebung des Problems auf einem Surface Pro 4 verifizieren.

Wer sich seit kurzem ebenfalls mit einem Fehlverhalten der Windows Hello Kamera auf dem Microsoft-Tablet konfrontiert sah, selbst aber keine Problemlösung fand, sollte schleunigst unter den Windows 10 Einstellung Windows Update starten und den neuen Treiber herunterladen.

Microsoft hat Windows Insidern im Fast Ring in dieser Woche erneut eine frische Windows 10 Insider Vorschauversion zum Download bereitgestellt. Die aktuellste Preview-Build des kommenden Fall Creators Updates trägt die Versionsnummer 16257 und bringt unter anderem eine brandneue Augen-Steuerungsfunktion zur erleichterten Bedienung des Betriebssystems mit. Darüber hinaus beinhaltet sie beispielsweise weitere Verbesserungen für den Browser Edge und den Sicherheitsaspekten des Windows Defender.

Die Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16257 ist mittlerweile die neunte Vorschauausgabe für das Fall Creators Update, mit dessen finaler Fassung weiterhin im September gerechnet werden darf. Bei Erscheinen wird diese Aktualisierung nach dem November Update, dem Anniversary Update und zuletzt dem Creators Update die dann vierte Windows 10 Hauptversion sein.

Die große Neuerung der aktuellen Insider Preview ist wie eingangs erwähnt die Implementierung einer fortschrittlichen Augen-Steuerungsfunktion, die sich aus einem . Allerdings ist das Feature derzeit offenbar noch nicht im deutschsprachigen Windows 10 nutzbar. Wie dem auch sei, Microsoft hat die neue Eingabemethode auf Basis der Eye-Tracking-Technologie der Firma Tobii entwickelt und sie soll Menschen mit Behinderung dabei helfen, Geräte mit Windows 10 besser und effizienter beziehungsweise vielleicht überhaupt erst nutzen zu können. Via Eye-Tracking können etwa der Mauszeiger bewegt oder Tastatureingaben getätigt werden.

Natürlich setzt die Verwendung der neuen Bedienfunktion ein kompatibles Eye-Tracking-Gerät von Tobii (aktuell nur Tobii Eye Tracker 4C, aber Unterstützung für Tobii Dynavox PCEye Mini, PCEyePlus, EyeMobile Plus und I-Series soll bald folgen) voraus und derzeit befindet sich das Ganze zudem noch in einem unfertigen Beta-Stadium, was sich auch im Laufe der nächsten Monate noch nicht ändern wird. Wann das Feature somit für Nutzer außerhalb der USA zum Testen verfügbar sein wird, ist im Moment unklar.



Der Browser Edge ist ein Bereich von Windows 10, an dem Microsoft unentwegt tüftelt. Mit Build 16257 erhält Edge einen dezent angepassten Look, der Einflüsse des Fluent Design Systems aufweist. Betroffen davon sind laut Microsofts Angaben etwa die Tab-Leiste und andere Kontrollelemente sowie verschiedene Animationen. Abgesehen von der Ästhetik hat das Windows-Team auch weitere Fixes implementiert, die überwiegend die Tab-Verwaltung betreffen.

Weitere Änderungen der neuen Vorschauversion sind neue Farboptionen für die Windows-Eingabeaufforderung, Optimierungen für das On-Screen-Touch-Keyboard, das nun flotter von der Taskleiste aus starten soll, sowie Leistungsverbesserungen für den Windows Defender. Letzterer informiert Nutzer darüber hinaus detaillierter über verschiedene Vorgänge und Funktionen nach dem Start.

Analog zu den vorherigen Windows 10 Insider Previews kommt auch Build 16257 mit einer Liste an allgemeinen Bugfixes und kleineren Optimierungen daher, die Microsoft in gewohnter Manier alle in einem offiziellen Blog-Beitrag aufführt. Außerdem wird dort erwähnt, dass auch die aktuelle Vorschauversion noch vier größere bekannte Probleme enthält, mit deren Behebung das Windows-Team derzeit beschäftig ist. Da diese allerdings nicht allzu gravierend anmuten, sollte die Korrektur nicht lange auf sich warten lassen.

Microsoft hat zudem den in der vergangenen Woche erschienen Windows 10 PC-Preview Build 16251 für Insider im Slow Ring sowie den neuen Windows 10 Mobile Build 15237 für Smartphones, der ebenfalls einige Bugfixes und Optimierungen mitbringt, veröffentlicht.

Also on display during Benioff's keynote was the upgrade to the firm's Salesforce1 customer platform, which now comes with the app-building program Lightning – which was introduced by Salesforce cofounder Parker Harris dressed (inadvisably) as a superhero.Here at Salesforce we have some of the best developers in the world, he said. But you don't have those developers, so Lightning makes their skills available to you.In essence, Lightning takes the application framework Salesforce's internal developers have been using and prebuilt components from the firm, which Harris promised would be updated regularly. A series of design tools is built in and the applications are run within the Salesforce app on any platform.Harris demonstrated a delivery app built using the platform and there was a staged drop-off on stage of a four-pack of Coke by a quadrocopter in the Moscone Center. Music is less well served. Fire TV connects to Amazon’s cloud music service, which means anything you bought from Amazon MP3, auto-rip CDs (you buy the CD and Amazon automatically adds the MP3s), and up to 250 other tracks manually uploaded. However, there is no music store on Fire TV itself. I also found the selection of concert videos poor, whether free or paid.There is a Spotify Connect app, but this is not full Spotify; rather, it's a receiver for Spotify played from your mobile or tablet.Fire TV has a few party tricks. One is voice search, which operates via a microphone built into the remote. Press and hold the voice button, speak, release, and your words go up to Amazon’s cloud voice recognition service and back down to perform a system-wide search.Voice search is mostly good. It does make sense for a sit-back experience, and searching for something like a movie, actor or app generally works first time. There are occasional frustrations. A search for “TuneIn Radio” is recognised as “Tune in radio” and does not find the app. That said, it works well enough for you to use it.

There is also an Amazon Cloud Drive app which you can instal on your Android or iOS device (Windows Phone users are out of luck) which automatically uploads your photos and videos, which then sync with Fire TV for viewing. A handy feature.What about casting a screen from another device to the Fire TV? There are two separate features. Second Screen only works with Kindle Fire or HDX tablets, and lets you project photos or videos from the device to the Fire TV. There is also Miracast support, accessed through display settings, which in theory should let you project the screen from any Miracast-compatible device. I tried two, one Android and one Windows, and neither worked for me.Mac OS X isn’t quite the RAM gobbler that Windows is, but since the Mini uses integrated graphics, that’s a big chunk of RAM nabbed before you’ve even started running applications, especially if you’re using multiple displays or even a single screen with a greater-than-HD resolution.The Mini I have here has 8GB of RAM and I would‘t take anything less. Mac OS X Yosemite, pre-installed on the new Mini, demands rather more memory than its predecessors did — more daemons, more backgrounded apps, more memory leaks. Even with only a handful of basic applications open, this Mini is already consuming just under 7GB of the installed eight.

Trouble is, I can't do anything about that. I can’t assess my memory usage on a new platform and then expand the memory as necessary. Who cares if no other Mini user wants to do this. I do. For the sake of perhaps five dollars for the memory slot and the tooling for the removable base, Apple has made its little machines far less attractive for anyone not seeking an appliance. And surely those people are among the iMac’s natural constituency, not the Mini’s?If you do open up a 2014 Mac Mini, it’s still an engineering marvel. All kitted out in silver and black, it’s as attractive on the inside as it is on the outside, as the iFixit disassembly pics on here reveal. Better than anything I can take, these shots will show you exactly how accessible the new Mini isn’t. Getting to the 5400rpm 500GB hard drive (in the base model; others have bigger drives and even a Fusion Drive SSD cache) is a chore, but doable.In use, this box, based on a 1.4GHz dual-core Core i5-based 4260U CPU feels fluid, and unlikely to trouble any but the most power-hungry users. As I say, it’s the lack of memory expansion that’s the problem here.

There’s a problem for users with Firewire peripherals too: Apple has dropped the Firewire 800 port it had placed on the back of the 2012 model. In its place is a second Thunderbolt port which will come in handy if you’re driving your monitor off the other one. The new Mini, like the old, has HDMI, but that limits you to 1920 x 1080. Thunderbolt drives my 2560 x 1440 Dell display very well.The Mini still has a useful four USB 3.0 ports and the SD card slot. Once again, the PSU is built in; no brick hanging off the back here. Gigabit Ethernet rounds off the new Mini’s port array; the internal Wi-Fi has been upgraded from 802.11n to 802.11ac.An optional extra for the Fire TV is a Bluetooth-connected game controller. This is a solid affair, larger than the Fire TV itself, and relatively expensive at £35. It has a full array of controls: two analogue sticks, D-pad, 8 buttons plus three multimedia controls (play, rewind, forward), two triggers and two shoulder buttons.Unfortunately the controller is so-so. The D-pad is stiff, the sticks are imprecise, and it lacks the polish of the best console controllers. The good news: I plugged in a wired Xbox 360 controller and it works perfectly, save for a few inessential missing buttons.

The idea of the controller is that it converts the Fire TV into a budget games console, with games priced at mobile app levels. Amazon even has its own game studios, and the controller comes with a free exclusive offering, a first-person shooter called Sev Zero, normally £4.99.Hard core gamers will be snooty about this, but the graphics are good enough for Fire TV to have real potential as a low-end gaming box. Sev Zero is humdrum, but Asphalt 8: Airborne is good fun with the controller. Fire TV supports OpenGL ES 3.0 which means rich graphics are possible. The snag here is the weak ecosystem. The selection of games is small, and they are mostly designed for tablets and touch control, so whether the controller works as expected is hit and miss.The more time I spent with Fire TV, the more annoyances I discovered. The biggest issue, which is not Amazon’s fault, is lack of third-party app support. Fire TV runs Fire OS 3.0 which is based on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean); however it does not include Google Play Services. Apps are downloaded from Amazon’s store and developers have to tweak their apps to run on Fire OS, and deploy them to Amazon’s store. Most have not bothered, which is why the Fire OS store is sparsely populated. Going it alone is a difficult and largely friendless journey.

The USB 2.0 port does not support storage devices unless you hack your device and even that is proving more difficult with more recent Fire TV software blocking rooting. So, unlike the Roku 3 (that's £20 more), you cannot play videos from external storage. Amazon’s guide states that “The USB port currently does not support any accessories,” but this is not true; I plugged in a keyboard and it worked, as did the Xbox 360 controller. Attach storage though and you get nothing, though potentially an app might be able to access it.Hack and flash: rooting the Fire TV allows access to the Google Play Store and enables the USB port to work with storage media, but Amazon is keen to block the options to allow this
There is a mysterious lack of closed captions – text in movies showing the dialogue. The Help Tips state that pressing the menu button on the remote will display them, but I could not find an example where this works. The US listings for Amazon Instant Video show “cc” against titles that support captions, including, for example, The Dark Knight Rises.

Apple hat die WWDC 2017 im vergangenen Februar angekündigt und dabei verraten, dass die Konferenz in diesem Jahr vom 5. bis 9. Juni in San Jose, Kalifornien stattfinden wird. Der Veranstaltungsort war für viele Branchenkenner eine große Überraschung, da Apple die WWDC seit vielen Jahren unentwegt im Moscone Center in San Francisco abgehalten hatte.

Im Laufe der WWDC-Woche erwartet Apple in diesem Jahr rund 5000 Entwickler aus aller Welt, die an offiziellen Sessions teilnehmen oder sich mit Hunderten von Ingenieure des Unternehmens austauschen können. Für alle jene Interessierten, die nicht direkt vor Ort sein können, wird Apple analog zu den Vorjahren alle Vorträge der Konferenz über die offizielle WWDC 2017 Webseite abrufbar machen. Zur Keynote dürfte es außerdem wieder einen Livestream geben.

Am heutigen Mittwoch, den 10. Mai 2017 startet Microsofts alljährliche Entwicklerkonferenz Build und der US-Softwareriese wird in deren Rahmen zwei große Keynotes abhalten. Die erste Präsentation dieser Art ist bereits für diesen Nachmittag angesetzt und soll um 17 Uhr starten, die zweite findet am morgigen Donnerstag, den 11. Mai 2017 ab 17.30 Uhr statt (es handelt es jeweils um mitteleuropäische Zeitangaben). Microsoft wird die beiden Keynotes für alle Interessierten wie gewohnt über seine Webseite Channel 9 auch im Livestream übertragen.

Die diesjährige Build wird von Microsoft nicht in San Francisco abgehalten. Stattdessen hat sich das US-Unternehmen für die Stadt entschieden, die in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Redmonder Hauptquartier liegt, Seattle. Für Entwickler und IT-Spezialisten, die nicht direkt vor Ort sein können oder wollen, ist beachtenswert, dass auf der erwähnten Webseite Channel 9 nicht nur die Keynotes zu verfolgen sein werden, sondern Microsoft dort auch einen Großteil der Konferenz-Sessions sowohl als Livestream als auch on demand kostenlos abrufbereit machen wird.
Wie schon den vergangenen Jahren darf während der Microsoft-Keynotes heute und morgen mit einer wahren Flut von kleineren und größeren Ankündigungen gerechnet werden, die sich aber aller Voraussicht nach überwiegend auf Neuigkeiten aus dem Software-Bereich beschränken dürften. Microsoft hat erst vor kurzem seinen brandneuen Surface Laptop präsentiert und wird später im Mai noch ein weiteres Event in Shanghai, China abhalten, zu dem es nochmals Hardware-Neuvorstellungen geben sollte.

Die Themenbereiche, zu denen während der Build 2017 auf jeden Fall Neues erwartet werden darf, sind somit folgende: Windows 10, Cortana, HoloLens und Mixed Reality, Xbox, Cloud-Computing sowie Office. Für den gewöhnlichen PC-Nutzer wird es insbesondere sehr interessant sein zu sehen, wie Microsoft Windows 10 nach der Fertigstellung des Creators Updates weiterzuentwickeln gedenkt. Erste kleine Anhaltspunkte dafür geben bereits die aktuellen Insider Preview Builds, aber die nächste Hauptversion des Betriebssystems, die im Herbst erscheinen wird und derzeit nur unter dem Codenamen Redstone 3 bekannt ist, dürfte eine Vielzahl bislang gar nicht oder kaum bekannter Neuerungen mit sich bringen.

HP stellt heute eine neue Generation seines Surface Pro Konkurrenten Elite x2 1012 vor. Mit dem leistungsstarken Tablet mit andockbarer Tastatur will der renommierte US-Hersteller in erster Linie den Geschäftskundenmarkt bedienen, was sich in umfangreichen Sicherheits- beziehungsweise Zusatzfeatures für das Gerät ausdrückt. HP hat bei der Entwicklung des Elite x2 1012 G2 jedoch weder ein schickes Design noch die Hardware-Features vernachlässigt, wodurch die Neuvorstellung sicherlich auch für den ein oder anderen Privatnutzer sehr interessant sein dürfte.

Das neue HP-Tablet Elite x2 1012 G2 ist mit einer Bauhöhe von 8,05 Millimeter einen Tick dünner als das Surface Pro 4 von Microsoft (8,45 Millimeter) und bringt 820 Gramm auf die Waage. Im robusten, eleganten Aluminium-Chassis, das auch wieder einen Kickstand bietet, verbaut der Hersteller nicht länger einen Intel Core M Prozessor, sondern eine deutlich leistungsfähigere Core i CPU der 7. Generation (Kaby Lake). Hinzu kommen je nach Modellkonfiguration bis zu 16 Gigabyte RAM und eine bis zu 1 Terabyte fassende SSD.

Das durch Gorilla Glass 4 geschützte Display des neuen HP-Geräts misst 12,3 Zoll in der Diagonalen, löst mit 2,736 x 1,824 Pixel auf und bietet eine maximale Helligkeit von 450 nits. Oberhalb des Displays sitzt eine 5 Megapixel Webcam, auf der Rückseite eine 8 Megapixel Hauptkamera. Der Hersteller integriert in das Tablet darüber hinaus Stereolautsprecher sowie Mikrofone mit Geräuschunterdrückung und HP Audio Boost. Dadurch soll sich das Elite x2 1012 G2 bestens für Videokonferenzen eignen und wird auch als erstes Detachable mit Skype for Business Zertifizierung beworben.



Die andockbare und dem Elite x2 1012 G2 beiliegende Tastatur bietet laut Hersteller dieselbe Nutzererfahrung wie die eines guten Laptop-Keyboards. Dazu sind die Tasten hintergrundbeleuchtet und warten mit 1,5 Millimeter Anschlagdistanz auf. Hinzu kommen diverse nützliche Funktionstasten, mit denen sich unter Windows 10 verschiedene Aktionen schnell auslösen lassen, und ein großes Touchpad.

Des Weiteren sehr wichtig für die aktuelle Windows 10 Erfahrung auf einem Tablet ist natürlich die Unterstützung eines Digitalisierstifts. HP spendiert dem Gerät also einen aktiven Stylus, der absolut verzögerungsfrei arbeitet und 2048 Druckstufen erkennt, sowie die Unterstützung der Wacom AES Technologie.

Zu guter Letzt speziell für den Unternehmenssektor erwähnenswert ist, dass HP verspricht, auch für sein neues Elite x2 1012 hervorragende Service-Optionen im Fall eines Hardware-Problems anzubieten. Im Gegensatz zu beispielsweise Microsofts Surface Pro 4 oder Apples iPad Pro soll sich das HP-Tablet vergleichsweise unkompliziert reparieren lassen. Darüber hinaus liefert der Hersteller das Gerät ab Werk mit umfassenden Sicherheitsfeatures aus, zu denen etwa ein TPM-Modul, umfassender Bios-Schutz, Datenträgerverschlüsselung sowie ein Fingerabdrucksensor und eine IR-Kamera zur Gesichtserkennung zählen.

Das neue Elite x2 1012 G2 wird laut HP ab Juli 2017 im deutschen Handel angeboten werden. Preisangaben macht der Hersteller noch nicht. Als passende Accessoires zu dem 2-in-1 wird es jedenfalls eine Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station, ein Elite USB-C Dock und einen USB-C Travel Hub zu kaufen geben. Alle drei Zubehörartikel dienen dazu, die Schnittstellenausstattung des Tablets zu erweitern, sind aber für unterschiedliche Einsatzszenarios konzipiert.

Amazon hat heute wie erwartet ein neues Mitglied für seine Echo-Familie namens Echo Show vorgestellt. Der smarte Lautsprecher mit Alexa-Integration verfügt als erstes Modell der Reihe über ein Display und unterstützt auch Videotelefonate. In den USA wird der Echo Show in den Farbvarianten Schwarz und Weiß ab dem 28. Juni 2017 für einen Preis von 230 US-Dollar erhältlich sein. Hinsichtlich eines Marktstarts in Deutschland hält sich Amazon bislang aber noch bedeckt.

Auf den ersten Blick wirkt Amazons neuer Echo Show ein bisschen wie ein alter kompakter Röhrenfernseher. Allerdings ist das Gerät selbstverständlich deutlich moderner gestaltet, leichter und kleiner (187 mm x 187 mm x 90 mm, 1170 Gramm). Das Touchscreen des Echo misst 7 Zoll in der Diagonalen und bietet dem Nutzer die Möglichkeit, durch Touch-Eingaben beispielsweise Wetterinformationen abzurufen, ein Youtube-Video abzuspielen oder den Videofeed einer im beziehungsweise am Haus installierten Sicherheitskamera anzuzeigen. Abseits der neuen Touch-Bedienung lässt sich der Show genau wie andere Vertreter der Echo-Reihe via Sprachbefehlen steuern. Amazons virtueller Assistent Alexa kann unter anderem Sportergebnisse nennen, Musik abspielen oder über anstehende Termine informieren.



Die zweite wichtige Funktionsneuerung des Echo Show ist die Möglichkeit, direkt auf dem Smart Speaker Videotelefonate zu führen. Dank dem Display, einer darüber sitzenden 5 Megapixel Kamera und einer simpel strukturierten Benutzeroberfläche soll das ganz problemlos klappen, allerdings mit der Einschränkung, dass dies ausschließlich mit Personen klappt, die ebenfalls einen Echo Show nutzen. Nicht zuletzt aus diesem Grund noch interessanter erscheint somit, dass Amazon heute auch das Features VoIP-Telefonie für alle seine Echo-Geräte angekündigt hat. Somit können Nutzer demnächst sowohl eines der Echo-Geräte als auch ein Smartphone mit der frisch überarbeiteten Echo-App verwenden, um miteinander zu kommunizieren. Es ist im Moment aber noch nicht bekannt, wann genau das Unternehmen die VoIP-Telefonie in vollem Umfang freischalten wird.

Insbesondere hinsichtlich des Telefonie-Features von Echo Show beziehungsweise der gesamten Echo-Familie ist es schon sehr verdächtig, dass Microsoft ausgerechnet gestern zusammen mit Harman Kardon einen Cortana-Lautsprecher namens Invoke vorgestellt hat, über den sich unter anderem Skype-Telefonate führen lassen werden. Dieses Gerät soll irgendwann im Herbst 2017 im internationalen Handel erscheinen.

Apple wird für das als iPad Pro Zubehör angebotene Smart Keyboard kostenlos eine auf drei Jahre erweiterte Herstellergarantie anbieten. Üblich ist bei dem kalifornischen Unternehmen ein Jahr für alle Produkte. Hintergrund dieser Maßnahme sind offenbar „Funktionsfehler“, die bei einigen der Tastaturen auftreten können. Die Webseiten MacRumors und 9to5Mac hatten jüngst übereinstimmend darüber berichtet.

Die Informationen, die die beiden in Apple-Fan-Kreisen bestens bekannten Webseiten veröffentlicht haben, sollen aus einer bei Apple intern kursierenden E-Mail stammen. Dieser nach sind Apple Stores und offizielle Servicepartner des Unternehmens ab sofort angehalten, eine auf drei Jahre erweiterte Garantiezeit für das Smart Keyboard zu gewähren. Darüber hinaus werden in dem Memo einige der Probleme aufgelistet, die bei den besagten Tastaturen auftreten können. So seien bei einigen Exemplaren beispielsweise hängenbleibende oder nicht mehr reagierende Tasten aufgefallen. In anderen Fällen sei hingegen ein fehlerhafter Smart Connector bemängelt worden, wodurch die Verbindung zwischen Smart Keyboard und iPad Pro sporadisch abbreche oder überhaupt nicht mehr funktioniere.

Devices capable of running Windows and Android are unlikely to prove anything more than a niche concern, but anything will help the chip makers in the today's tab-tastic environment.Intel is taking a hammering from the continued drop in sales of the traditional PC running Windows while newer Microsoft tablets using Windows 8.1 aren’t making a dent.Android, meanwhile, has by far the single biggest market share, chiefly thanks to Samsung.For Intel at least, a chip-set capable of booting Windows and Android will hopefully mean it can skim some of the cream off the Android growth that’s doing some of the damage to Windows and PCs.Newbie CEO Krzanich in November warned of zero revenue growth for Intel in 2014 compared to 2013 – despite having spent billions of dollars on, among other things, building new, power-efficient chips like Atom and Haswell supposed to help Intel break into devices.

Can Google’s Chromebook become the laptop platform of choice during 2014? Probably not, but there’s certainly demand for it. According to US market-watcher NPD, during the 11 months from January through November 2013, the platform’s share of the computing device market had risen to 9.6 per cent from just 0.2 per cent in the same months of the previous year.By contrast, Apple’s laptops accounted for a mere 1.8 per cent of the market in 2013, down from 2.6 per cent the year before. Windows-based laptops also declined, though they remain the biggest seller: their combined share fell from 42.9 per cent to 34.1 per cent.Do the sums, and that means Windows laptops took 75 per cent of the US notebook market, Chromebooks 21 per cent and Apple a measly four per cent. Some 6.6 million laptops were shipped through commercial channels, says NPD, of which just under 1.4 million were Chromebooks. Five Chromebooks were sold for every MacBook.

Of course, MacBooks are four to five times more expensive than the average Chromebook – $1,000-plus against around $200 - so the gains for the various devices’ respective manufacturers isn’t the same. But the numbers show that punters are not only continuing to buy laptops despite the rise of the tablet - NPD’s numbers show unit shipments up 24.5 per cent year on year - and that they like the idea of only paying a few hundred bucks for one.At that price, owning one in addition to a tablet isn’t perceived as a barrier. Punters can have both. With so much data existing outside the machine - and so many applications centring on data creation or, rather, file creation - there’s no longer any real concern that the device you pick up doesn’t contain the files you want.What Chromebooks appear to be doing is winning that part of the laptop buying audience that might once have snapped up a netbook. Netbooks were arguably killed off by tablets, but the form-factor’s smaller-than-a-notebook limitations arguably had as much to do with it as the rise of the iPad.Early netbooks came with Linux, but that bamboozled folk who felt they needed Windows as a security blanket. Windows, in turn, upped the netbook specification - a big hard drive rather than a small amount of Flash; a faster, more battery pummelling CPU - and a higher price. The screen and keyboard were too small for most grown-ups too.

Some are from HP itself - Pavilion Chromebook, Chromebook 14 - and others from Samsung and Acer, not to mention Google’s own Chromebook Pixel, though this is considerably more expensive.More are coming. Dell will have its Chromebook out later this month, Sony’s Vaio VCC11 is expected in the spring, and Toshiba has shown one off at CES too that’s due out until February. Asus is said to have a couple in the works. At CES, Lenovo US president Jay Parker told CNET the company will have “multiple Chromebook models” in the market by the Summer.Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Sony and Toshiba - that’s essentially the world’s key laptop makers other than Apple and, as the numbers show, in the US Apple really isn’t that big a player.“We believe the market will accelerate greatly in the next 12 months,” said Parker. “I think Chromebooks can be very impactful in the market really quickly.”

Of course, that’s what all these companies said about the netbook. This time round, they are offering systems at netbook prices with notebook form-factors. That’s one of the key netbook failings addressed.As for the other, Windows, now that punters have grown accustomed to alternative operating systems through their experiences with iOS and Android, they’re clearly far more open to the idea of having a laptop without Windows than they were in the middle of the last decade.“The presumption that desktop Windows is ‘most familiar’ [to users] no longer applies,” says Jeff Orr of ABI Research, a market watcher.Google is a very strong brand and so many people now use its online services.Market analyst Gartner reckons Chromebook sales will hit 4.79 million worldwide in 2014, rising to 8.0 million the year after. It says 1.84 million of the machines shipped in 2013, so you’re looking at 160 per cent growth this year - well in excess of any other platform - and 66 per cent the following year.

CES 2014 The Las Vegas-hosted 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is still running, of course, but the majority of the announcements have been made: a fair few before the show even started, in a bid to get ahead of the rest. Like early morning shoppers, though, everyone figures out the pre-show press release trick soon enough and now everyone is back to square one. What next? CES announcements in October?Not that the world’s consumer electronics and technology players had a lot to say that was new. Smartwatches and wearable devices have proved the key theme of the show, with lots of folk jumping on the bandwagon to try and get a piece of the action early, now well-known birds like Fitbit and Pebble have been enjoying.It helps that Apple’s much-rumoured entry into the market has not taken place, probably for the same reasons that Samsung’s effort, the Galaxy Gear, was so poor: they’re trying to make a flash gadget that will wow non-techie punters, but the core hardware - the battery, chiefly - just isn’t there yet.CES is always a showcase for wall after wall of tellies, but there has been little novelty this time round. Curved screens have been done, so too have 4K and beyond Ultra HD TVs. Smart TVs are so 2012. Steve Jobs may have figured out the secret of making TV hardware sexy again just before he died, but no one else has in the intervening period.

Intel went to town on Ultrabooks a couple of years ago, but the broad public apathy to the new platform resulted in a more modest showing in 2013. This time round, rather than start its own bandwagon a-rolling, the chip giant just did what everyone else has: it jumped on someone else’s, in this case wearables. Whether an Edison platform, a PC-on-an-SD-card based on the new Quark processor, will truly be suitable for wearables - in other words, able to deliver ARM-level power efficiency - remains to be seen. Announced now, it won’t be out until the summer.So what did stand out? Here are some of the items that struck me, and don’t forget you can also check out El Reg’s complete CES 2014 coverage here.We’re a sceptical lot here at The Register and we’ve found it hard to accept that personal 3D printing has much of a future outside the homes of Shoreditch techno-hipsters and a few, more advanced makers. Microsoft beschreibt wie üblich alle Neuerungen, Verbesserungen und Bugfixes sowohl zum Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16199 für PC als auch zum Mobile Build 15215 für Smartphones detailliert in einem offiziellen Blog-Beitrag.

HTCs neues Flaggschiff-Smartphone U11 wird mit Android 7.1 Nougat (inklusive der herstellereigenen Sense-Oberfläche) auf den Markt kommen. Da Google im Rahmen der Entwicklerkonferenz I/O 2017 aber viele Details zur nächsten Android-Hauptversion - derzeit nur als Android O bekannt - verriet, fragen sich sicherlich viele Technikbegeisterte, wie HTCs Update-Strategie aussieht. Passender Weise hat Areamobile diesbezüglich etwas in Erfahrung bringen können.

Die Publikation konnte sich gemäß eigener Angaben im Nachgang der Vorstellung des U11 mit dem Chef von HTCs Smartphone-Abteilung, Chian-Lin Chang, unterhalten. In dem Gespräch machte Chang deutlich, dass das taiwanische Unternehmen derzeit mit zwei großen Android-Updates plane. Das umfasse die Aktualisierung auf Android O sowie auf die von Google für das Jahr 2018 entwickelte Android-Ausgabe. Darüber hinaus könne und wolle man aber derzeit keine Versprechen machen.

Aus dem Interview geht nicht hervor, wann HTC rechnet, mit der Verteilung von Android O für das U11 beginnen zu können. Der Hersteller gibt sich diesbezüglich erst einmal abwartend. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass Google selbst nur etwas vage Ende Sommer 2017 als Veröffentlichungszeitraum der diesjährigen Android-Ausgabe nennt, ist das aber mehr als verständlich.

Überhaupt keine Angaben macht HTC derzeit zu potentiellen Android O Updates für andere aktuelle Smartphone-Modelle neben dem brandneuen U11. Laut Areamobile dürften aber sehr wahrscheinlich auch Besitzer eines HTC 10 sowie des U Play und U Ultra später in diesem Jahr damit versorgt werden.

Microsoft wird am kommenden Dienstag, den 23. Mai 2017 ein weiteres Hardware-Event abhalten, diesmal in Shanghai, China. Nachdem sich rund um die Ankündigung der Veranstaltung bereits andeutete, dass der US-Konzern dort die nächste Generation seines Premium-Tablets Surface Pro ankündigen könnte, hat der Reporter Evan Blass nun sämtlichen Spekulationen ein Ende gesetzt. Blass veröffentlichte über die Webseite Venture Beat diverse Pressefotos des neuen Surface Pro, durch die sich auch erste Details zu dem Gerät bestätigen lassen.

Zunächst einmal ist es wichtig festzuhalten, dass Microsoft für den Nachfolger des Surface Pro 4 offenbar auf die Fortsetzung der bislang für die Baureihe genutzten Nummerierung verzichten wird. Laut Blass wird das neue Modell schlicht und einfach „Surface Pro“ heißen. Diese Entscheidung ist angesichts der durchgesickerten Bilder nachvollziehbar. Das neue Pro sieht im Grunde aus wie das alte. Der bei Microsoft für die Surface-Produkte verantwortliche Manager Panos Panay hatte außerdem erst vor wenigen Wochen in einem Interview gesagt, es werde in naher Zukunft kein „Surface Pro 5“ geben, zumal seiner Auffassung nach nur ein komplettes Produkt-Redesign diese Bezeichnung rechtfertigen würde.

Alle im Moment vorliegenden Infos vermitteln also den Eindruck, dass es sich beim kommenden Windows 10 2-in-1 um ein aufgefrischtes Surface Pro 4 handeln wird. Blass spricht in seinem Artikel ebenfalls von einem „Refresh“. So verwundert es auch nicht allzu sehr, dass auf den veröffentlichten Bildern des neuen Pro-Modells exakt dieselben externen Schnittstellen zu erkennen sind, die der im Herbst 2015 vorgestellte Vorgänger bieten kann. Auf der rechten Seite sitzen ein USB 3.0 Typ-A Anschluss, ein DisplayPort sowie der Surface Connector zur Stromversorgung, links ein 3,5 Millimeter Klinkenanschluss.

Was Microsoft allerdings gemäß der Fotos beim nächsten Surface Pro aus ästhetischer Sicht verändert hat, das sind die Farben, in denen das Type Cover (Tastatur) sowie der Surface Pen angeboten werden. Der Hersteller wird die beiden Accessoires laut Blass jeweils in vier neuen Farben auf den Markt bringen, die der mit dem Surface Laptop vorgestellten Farbpalette stark ähneln.

Zur Hardware-Ausstattung des neuen Surface Pro gibt es von Blass leider noch keine Infos, aber er will diese plus Details zu den Preisen und zur Verfügbarkeit des Geräts am kommenden Montag, also einen Tag vor dem Microsoft-Event verraten. Aufgrund der aktuellen Marktsituation und des (äußerlich) nahezu unveränderten Chassis-Design des neuen Pro ist es allerdings höchst wahrscheinlich, dass Microsoft Intels Kaby Lake Prozessoren der U-Serie (Core i5 und i7) verbaut plus wie gehabt bis zu 16 Gigabyte RAM und 1 Terabyte SSD-Speicher.

Abschließend noch ein Wort für Fans von Microsofts zweitem Hybrid-Gerät, dem Surface Book. Wie erwartet hat Blass von seiner Quelle erfahren, dass es im Zuge der anstehenden Microsoft-Veranstaltung in Shanghai keine neue Generation dieses Produkts zu sehen geben wird.
AMD hat mehrere neue Ryzen Prozessoren angekündigt, die im weiteren Verlauf dieses Jahres erhältlich sein sollen. Besonders interessant: Unter diesen kommenden CPUs werden sich auch die ersten Ryzen-Modelle für Notebooks und 2-in-1s befinden, wie kürzlich während des AMD Financial Analyst Days zu erfahren war. Außerdem bereitet der Chip-Hersteller die Markteinführung eines besonders leistungsstarken Prozessors mit dem Codenamen „Threadripper“ für High-End Desktop-PCs sowie die Budget-Reihe Ryzen 3 vor.
Die ersten Ryzen Desktop-Prozessoren (Ryzen 5 und 7) mit brandneuer Zen-Architektur hatte AMD früher in diesem Jahr zusammen mit passenden Chipsätzen beziehungsweise Mainboards weltweit in den Handel gebracht. Wie unabhängige Tests seither belegen konnten, gelang AMD mit der neuen CPU-Generation tatsächlich ein gewaltiger technologischer Fortschritt im Vergleich zur Vorgängergeneration. Das geht sogar soweit, dass sich die Chipschmiede zum ersten Mal seit Jahren wieder einen echten Wettstreit um die Leistungskrone mit den Core i5 und i7 Prozessoren des Erzrivalen Intel liefern kann.

Die kommenden Mobil-Prozessoren der Ryzen Familie tragen laut vorliegenden Informationen den Codenamen „Raven Ridge“ und werden nur als sogenannte APUs - Accelerated Processing Units - erscheinen, die CPU-Kerne sowie eine GPU gemeinsam auf einer Chipfläche unterbringt. Der CPU-Teil des Pakets soll mit bis zu vier Ryzen-Kernen aufwarten und maximal 8 Threads unterstützen.

Im Vergleich zu AMDs vorheriger APU-Generation soll Raven Ridge eine um rund 50 Prozent gesteigerte CPU-Leistung bieten können. Außerdem wird AMD eine Grafikeinheit basierend auf der neuen GPU-Architektur Vega integrieren, deren gesteigerte Leistung rund 40 Prozent betragen soll. Für einen mobilen Prozessor außerdem besonders relevant ist, dass der Chiphersteller einen um 50 Prozent reduzierten Energiebedarf verspricht.

Über die kommenden Desktop-Prozessoren der Ryzen-Familie wurde nicht allzu viel verraten. Das High-End-Prunkstück wird allerdings laut AMD „Threadripper“ sein, der mit der derselben, nun bestens bekannten Zen-Architektur, allerdings mit bis zu 16 Kernen und 32 Threads auftrumpfen kann. Im Budget-Bereich des Markts soll Ryzen 3 gegen Intels Core i3 Chips antreten.

Google hat im Zuge seiner aktuell stattfindenden Entwicklerkonferenz I/O 2017 nicht nur neue Features für seinen digitalen Assistant angekündigt, sondern auch Neues rund um den smarten Lautsprecher Google Home. Für Technikbegeisterte hierzulande dürfte dabei zu allererst interessant sein, dass der Internetgigant Home in den kommenden Monaten endlich nach Deutschland bringen wird - neben Australien, Frankreich, Kanada und Japan. Bislang kann der Smart-Speaker lediglich in Großbritannien und den USA zum Preis von rund 130 US-Dollar (ohne Mehrwertsteuer) erworben werden.

Was Neuerungen betrifft, wird Google Home um vier durchaus sinnvolle Features ergänzt. Das beginnt mit der Funktion „Proactive Assistance“, die als eine Art proaktiv arbeitendes Benachrichtigungssystem beschrieben werden kann. Sofern die künstliche Intelligenz, die auf Home läuft, „bemerkt“, dass sie den Nutzer über ein aktuelles Ereignis informieren sollte, leuchtet der Lautsprecher auf. So kann Home also beispielsweise bei einem anstehenden Termin dezent auf erhöhtes Verkehrsaufkommen hinweisen und den Anwender dadurch zu einer etwas früheren Abfahrt ermutigen. Konkret zu Wort melden wird sich Home allerdings nur dann, wenn der Anwender nach dem Grund für die Benachrichtigung fragt.

Zunächst speziell für Nutzer in Nordamerika wird Google eine neue Telefoniefunktion für Home herausbringen. Dieser Schritt kann als Reaktion auf ein vergleichbares Feature gesehen werden, das Amazon zuletzt für seine Amazon Echo Familie angekündigt hat, muss sich aber natürlich schon seit längerem in Entwicklung befunden haben. Google Home wird in den USA und Kanada allerdings anders als die Echo-Lautsprecher prinzipiell jede Mobilfunk- oder Festnetznummer anrufen können. Dazu greift Home sowohl auf die Google Kontakte des Nutzers als auch auf eine Datenbank mit Einrichtungen, Behörden, Unternehmen und so weiter zurück. Ob oder wann diese Funktion auch in Deutschland verfügbar sein wird, ist im Moment nicht bekannt. Google hat aber die Ausweitung des Angebots auf andere Länder in Aussicht gestellt.

Now, let’s see. Small form factors are always popular, but for many it’s a what-you-would-buy-if-you-could-afford-it option, because more often than not other practical considerations win the day. I was tempted though, but having a 1366 x 768 display – and only Core i5 configurations being handed out – I felt the larger Core-i7 equipped 840 G1 had a more enduring appeal even without an SSD.As for the screen, it was anybody’s guess what I was getting as I was handed a laptop bag to wander home with. Would it be full HD (and some of you might even get beyond this paragraph) or the more standard lower resolution option?The good news is, you can keep reading. I’m typing this whilst gazing upon a rather easy-on-the-eye full HD 1920 x 1080 matt screen. The menu bloat of Office 365 sits quite comfortably atop Word and there’s no underlying feeling of claustrophobia creeping in on this desktop.I also lucked in on the RAM too, as 4GB is standard, but this model came with 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM along with a 500GB 7200RPM Toshiba HDD. OK, so the HDD might get a few grumbles and it does impact on benchmark performance, especially when compared to the Toshiba Portégé Z30 running the same Haswell generation dual-core 2.1GHz Intel Core i7-4600U CPU, but for typical tasks it’s not obviously hampering anything.

Graphics get a boost too. Even though the Intel HD 4400 Graphics is perfectly adequate for most tasks it does share up to 4GB of system memory and whereas the AMD Radeon HD 8750M that’s also on-board will rely on its own 1GB of RAM provision for improved performance. For the most part, the Intel GPU kicks in for power saving profiles, whereas the AMD option works in performance modes.Beyond replacing the HDD with an SSD, if you’re after a further performance boost, this Elitebook can accommodate a flash cache of 32GB, alternatively the same slot can fit a mini-card 120GB SSD. I tried to get HP to send me the flash cache to see how much of a difference this would make. I’ve tested various hybrid configurations that all improve boot up times and make a significant impact on benchmarking results too.Yet, for the moment, at least, getting kitted out with a cache on an Elitebook remains elusive. Evidently none to be had in the market, not even for ready money. A glance at the HP service manual [PDF] reveals it’s an M.2 NGFF (next generation form factor) module,
At 339 x 237 x 21mm and weighing 1.58kg it’s not especially cumbersome to manage to lug around. According to HP’s website, “Not all configurations will be classified as Ultrabooks” – this is a footnote to the headline claiming the HP 840 G1 is an “industry leading Ultrabook”. Well, make up your minds, folks…

The thin black base panel is actually metal and the palm rests are too, although you could easily presume them to be plastic. The lid has a rubberised texture which soon shows glossy fingerprints on its matt finish. The keyboard is spill-resistant and the whole kit and caboodle is apparently designed to endure MIL-STD 810G testing. Another footnote mentions the MIL spec testing is "pending" – slackers.Apart from the ruggedised lid, it doesn't appear especially butch. The easily removable base cover creaks when you lean on the palm rests and the right-hand shift key is a bit stiff and squeaks sometimes too. Yet overall, the keyboard itself has a good feel to it and is easy to get used to. The slightly textured surface is none too bothersome: indeed, its non-slip touch probably works well in warmer climes or when its desk pizza time.Being for business bods, HP has loaded this model with its Client Security software. Assuming it would no doubt hassle me for passwords if it began to feel separation trauma, I did my best to avoid setting it up during testing. Curiously, if I rested my hand on the palm rest for too long it would pop-up and start demanding attention.

It took me a while to realise what the problem was, but my hand was resting on the fingerprint reader over to the right side and this flesh contact was getting the Client Security app all excited. I just wanted it to bugger off and wondered, apart from disabling the driver, if there was a simple way to turn off this Validity Sensors tech. It seemed the only way around it was through it, so I gave in to the Client Security nagging.Luckily, you can skip several levels of security, including the biometric finger print reading, but when all was done and I rested my hand on the reader again, another message popped up telling me how it had detected that I was trying to use the fingerprint reader: “Do you want to enroll your fingerprints now?” it asked. No I bloody don't. Fortunately, it featured a "Do not show this message again" checkbox. So far so good. Still, those security options are all there for a good reason and the EliteBook 840G1 features a SmartCard reader too.

And so the security shuffle began in earnest with slower start-ups as HP’s Client Security did what it’s supposed to do, gearing up additional protection and interrogating just about anything that could be plugged into the EliteBook. Thanks to its Just In Time Access (JITA) window of opportunity, by default USB sticks get booted off after 15 minutes – but this behaviour can be customised to suit.It’s worth getting familiar with these features, though, as they drill down to BIOS level and I had to get through security to enable alterations for Linux testing, changing the device boot order and opting for Multiboot made this very straightforward.You get two USB 3.0 ports per side and you can hook up additional monitors using either the VGA port, which according to HP’s own tech docs won’t deliver 1080p, or the full-size DisplayPort option, which will. On the right and out of sight is an SD card slot in the base. You get Gigabit Ethernet too and alongside it a docking interface for an optional port replicator. It’s a shame it doesn’t offer an additional interface, such as HDMI, but the combo mic/headphone jack on the EliteBook does appear as separate jacks on the dock, though.

Talking of audio, the speaker output is modest but loud enough for one-to-one movie viewing - an opportunity to take advantage of that full HD screen. DTS Studio Sound version 6.1 is provided to help enhance the speakers situated in the grille in front of the display. A bit of tweaking will help soften the sound a little, but you’ll not be troubling anyone with too much bass – there isn’t any.Apart from music and movie set-ups, the DTS control panel handles the beam forming and noise cancellation; functions that the two mics either side of the webcam can entertain. The webcam itself relies on Cyberlink YouCam 4 which makes the most of the 720p image resolution, with fairly decent colour balance and not too heavy on the contrast.

On the move, the 14in form factor works out well compared to a 15in model. It’s lighter for a start and with that full HD desktop real estate you certainly don’t feel like you’re missing out on anything. I’ve been lugging it around for some time now and it’s only when I carry the power brick and cable too that the balance tips from 'marginal' to 'noticeable'.Depending on what you put this Core i7 EliteBook through, you could end up needing that power brick as the battery life isn’t as enduring as you might expect. I couldn’t find any quoted figures from HP either, apart from “up to 33 hours if you attach the slice battery optional extra”, which sounds ambitious. Relying on just the internal battery, PCMark 8 churned out a score of 3hrs 5mins which you can typically double for everyday tasks and in most cases I managed around 4-5 hours.

You can try for longer with the default power saving mode which overdoes it a bit on the screen dimming. Also, you’ll need to keep an eye on the keyboard backlighting (and remember to turn it off) as it doesn’t appear to have an ambient light sensor and comes to life in broad daylight when you start typing. Lest we forget, you can actually swap out the 3-cell, Li-ion 4350mAh, 50Wh battery in the EliteBook thanks to its easily-removable latching base plate.PCMark 8 also clocked this HDD Ultrabook at 2581 with a casual gaming frame rate of 20.1fps, which would naturally improve at a lower screen resolution. Being a Windows 7 Pro machine I gave it a spin with PCMark 7 too, which delivered a far more generous score of 3052. Incidentally, there were no Windows 8.x discs supplied.And so to Linux. For this review I thought I’d give openSUSE 13.1 a spin, as SUSE for PPC was the first distro I ever grappled with back in 2000. Oddly, the configuration on the USB stick using the Pen Drive Linux installer wasn’t recognised using HP's F9 key boot volume prompt, although the stick with Mint Linux on it was seen and worked fine. Yet after setting up the aforementioned Multiboot option, openSUSE booted up perfectly. The KDE version looks a bit different to how I remember it though…

As a daily workhorse, it’s easy to get comfortable with the EliteBook 840 G1 – its 14in form factor and full HD display hitting a sweet spot for portability, productivity and practicality. There are some compromises though and battery life is the most obvious and may be the reason why HP is somewhat ambiguous about which models qualify as Ultrabooks, so it’s just as well you can easily swap out the power pack for another.Relying on an HDD does undermine the benchmark performance but it's not especially noticeable once everything is running. There’s an M.2 flash cache option to give the EliteBook 840 G1 a shot in the arm, which sounds like a great idea - if only HP could find them. UK saps shoppers spent more than £100,000 a minute at Dixons Retail during the Boxing Day sales helping to drag it into growth during the Christmas quarter for the second consecutive year.But CEO Sebastian James held off talking up any recovery given the torrid time that many electronics retailers have faced in the past four years, and was lukewarm about prospects for the rest of its fiscal ending June.

Apple hat eine neue Event-Seite online geschaltet, die verrät, dass die bevorstehende Keynote zum Auftakt der diesjährigen World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) am Montag, den 5. Juni 2017 erwartungsgemäß weltweit via Livestream mitverfolgt werden kann. Wie von dem kalifornischen Unternehmen gewohnt, wird sich die Übertragung kurz vor dem geplanten Keynote-Start um 19 Uhr mitteleuropäischer Zeit sowohl direkt über die Apple-Webseite (mit Safari-Browser auf einem iOS-Gerät oder Mac und Edge-Browser unter Windows 10) als auch über einen Apple TV aufrufen lassen.
Die nun erfolgte offizielle Bestätigung für einen Livestream zur WWDC-Keynote ist willkommen, da die Angaben Apples diesbezüglich in den vergangenen Wochen nicht eindeutig waren. Das Unternehmen hatte beispielsweise lediglich publik gemacht, dass es über die gesamte WWDC-Woche hinweg wieder zahlreiche Live- beziehungsweise On-Demand-Übertragungen für registrierte Entwickler geben wird. Nun besteht aber auch kein theoretischer Zweifel mehr an der Möglichkeit für wirklich alle Interessierten, die großen Ankündigung des ersten Konferenztages mitzuverfolgen.

Relevant und erwähnenswert ist all das insbesondere, da sich die WWDC 2017 Woche anschickt, eine mit Apple-Neuankündigungen vollgepackte zu werden. Die anstehende Keynote könnte sich daher vielleicht sogar als eine der aufregendsten der letzten Jahre entpuppen. Fest gerechnet werden darf dabei natürlich auch in diesem Jahr wieder mit der Enthüllung der neuesten Ausgaben von iOS, macOS, tvOS und watchOS. Zusätzlich halten sich außerdem hartnäckig diverse Gerüchte über neue Apple-Hardware, die zur pünktlich WWDC debütieren soll.
Den jüngsten noch unbestätigten Informationen von Insidern nach wird Apple im Rahmen der Entwicklerkonferenz seine komplette Notebook-Line-up auffrischen, sprich neue MacBook und MacBook Pro, ja vielleicht sogar aktualisierte MacBook Air Modelle vorstellen. Des Weiteren soll ein brandneues 10,5 Zoll iPad Pro gezeigt werden und auch ein Lautsprecher beziehungsweise ein vergleichbares Home-Entertainment-Produkt mit Siri-Integration erscheint immer wahrscheinlicher.

Asus hat die Verfügbarkeit des ZenBook 3 Deluxe auf dem deutschen Markt angekündigt. Das Premium-Notebook wurde gleich zu Beginn dieses Jahres im Rahmen der CES 2017 vorgestellt und erscheint nun knapp drei Monate später als eigentlich vorgesehen.

Die Markteinführung des ZenBook 3 Deluxe - Modellnummer UX490 - geht hierzulande einher mit der Ablösung des ZenBook 3 (UX390) an der Spitze der edlen Notebook-Leichtgewichte von Asus. Das neue Gerät wartet unter anderem mit einem 14 Zoll großen Full HD IPS-Display, einem Gewicht von nur 1,1 Kilogramm und einer Bauhöhe von 12,9 Millimeter, einem Intel Core Prozessor der 7. Generation (Kaby Lake Core i5 oder i7 Dual-Core der U-Serie) sowie zwei Thunderbolt 3 Schnittstellen auf.

e wichtige Ausstattungsmerkmale des ZenBook 3 Deluxe sind eine 512 oder 1000 Gigabyte fassende PCIe SSD, bis zu 16 Gigabyte RAM, ein 46 Wh Akku, vier von Harman Kardon zertifizierte Lautsprecher für Surround Sound sowie eine Webcam und ein USB 3.1 Gen 1 Typ-C Port. Zur drahtlosen Kommunikation unterstützt das Notebook Wi-Fi nach 802.11ac und Bluetooth 4.1. Darüber hinaus werden eine Chiclet-Tastatur mit Hintergrundbeleuchtung, ein Multi-Touch-Trackpad und ein Fingerabdrucksensor geboten. Als Betriebssystem installiert der Hersteller sowohl Windows 10 Home als auch Pro (je nach Konfiguration) vor.

Gemäß den Angaben von Asus ist das ZenBook 3 Deluxe ab sofort in den beiden Farbvarianten „Royal Blue“ und „Quartz Grey“ im deutschen Handel erhältlich. Der Hersteller bietet insgesamt drei Hardware-Konfigurationen an, deren Preisspanne von 1600 Euro bis rund 2200 Euro reicht. Das Topmodell ist mit Intel Core i7-7500U, 16 Gigabyte LPDDR3-RAM und 1 Terabyte SSD bestückt.

Wie Microsoft jüngst bekannt gab, wird der neue Abonnement-Service „Xbox Game Pass“ ab dem 1. Juni 2017 ganz offiziell auf 30 Märkten - darunter auch der deutsche - verfügbar sein. Der Dienst, der kurz und knapp als Netflix für Videospiele beschrieben werden kann, ist zum Start exklusiv für Xbox One Nutzer erhältlich und gewährt diesen gegen eine monatliche Gebühr von 9,99 Euro Zugriff auf eine ausgewählte Sammlung älterer Xbox One beziehungsweise Xbox 360 Titel.

Für Xbox One Besitzer, die bereits Microsofts Xbox Live Gold abonniert haben, ist der Zugriff auf den Xbox Game Pass Service allerdings schon jetzt möglich. Das US-Unternehmen lässt diese Nutzergruppe den neuen Dienst ab sofort 14 Tage lang kostenlos testen.

Im Rahmen von Xbox Game Pass bietet Microsoft eigenen Angaben nach Abonnenten unbegrenzten Zugriff auf aktuell über 100 Spiele des Xbox-Portfolios. Zu diesen gehören unter anderem die nicht mehr ganz brandaktuellen Xbox One Titel Halo 5: Guardians, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Mad Max, NBA 2K16, Sunset Overdrive und PayDay 2 sowie die abwärtskompatiblen Xbox 360 Titel BioShock, Fable 3, Gears of War, Viva Piñata und XCOM: Enemy Within. Microsoft hat sich dazu bekannt, den neuen Abo-Service kontinuierlich ausbauen und mit neuen Spielen versorgen zu wollen. Zu den Ländern, in denen der Dienst zum Start verfügbar ist, gehören neben Deutschland auch beispielsweise Belgien, Dänemark, Finnland, Frankreich, Griechenland, Großbritannien, Italien, Irland, Kanada, die Niederlande, Norwegen, Österreich, Polen, Portugal, Russland, Schweden, die Schweiz, Spanien, Tschechien, Ungarn und die USA.

Im direkten Vergleich zu einem anderen Spiele-Abo-Dienst wie Sonys PlayStation Now hat der Xbox Game Pass den Vorteil, dass die Spiele nicht etwa nur auf die heimische Konsole aus der Cloud gestreamt werden, was bei einer langsameren Internetverbindung zu Qualitätsproblemen führen kann, sondern ganz klassisch auf die Xbox One heruntergeladen werden müssen. Entgegen anders lautender Angaben Microsofts zu einem früheren Zeitpunkt ist derzeit nicht länger klar, ob Xbox Game Pass in Zukunft auch für Windows 10 Geräte verfügbar gemacht werden wird.

Die diesjährigen iPhone-Spekulationen steuern langsam aber sicher auf ihren Höhepunkt vor der wahrscheinlichen September-Enthüllung von Apples neuer Smartphone-Line-up zu. Aktuell sorgt der Leaker Benjamin Geskin für reichlich Wirbel in der Szene, indem er mehrere Fotos sowie ein Video veröffentlichte, das der Welt die äußere Form des vielleicht „iPhone 8“ oder „iPhone X“ genannten kommenden iPhone-Flaggschiffs verraten soll.

Zunächst einmal der ganz deutliche Hinweis, dass die von Geskin auf Twtter geposteten Aufnahmen nicht etwa ein funktionsfähiges oder gar finales iPhone 8 Design zeigen. Der Leaker selbst bezeichnet das präsentierte Gerät als „Dummy“-Modell, was in diesem Fall konkret bedeutet, dass es sich um einen chinesischen Nachbau des Smartphone-Designs auf Grundlage von aus Industriekreisen durchgesickerten Konstruktionsskizzen handelt. Sofern die abfotografierten Formen tatsächlich repräsentativ für die finalen Designs der kommenden Apple-Smartphones sind, können sie einen ersten Eindruck davon vermitteln, wie sich die Modelle in Sachen Abmessungen unterscheiden werden. Das 7s und das 7s Plus sollen Gerüchten nach weitgehend genau so aussehen wie die bekannten Modelle iPhone 7 und 7 Plus, was die vorliegenden Aufnahmen auch zu bestätigen scheinen. Das iPhone 8 hingegen ist etwas dicker als die beiden 7s-Modelle, dafür aber - trotz 5,8 Zoll Display - nur minimal höher und breiter als das 7s mit 4,7 Zoll Display.

Die weiteren Ausstattungsmerkmal aller drei kommenden iPhones, insbesondere aber des Topmodells, sind weiterhin ein großes Mysterium, weshalb diesbezüglich zahlreiche Gerüchte kursieren. Die Rede ist im Zusammenhang mit dem iPhone 8 etwa von 3D-Gesichtserkennung, einem im Display integrierten Fingerabdruckscanner, virtuellen Funktionstasten, die dem Nutzer neue Bedienmöglichkeiten bieten könnten, Unterstützung für Wireless Charging sowie brandneue Augmented Reality (AR) Features. All diese Neuerungen - sofern Apple sie denn tatsächlich so umsetzt - sollen allerdings auch dazu führen, dass das diesjährige Topmodell das teuerste iPhone in der zehnjährigen Historie der Apple-Smartphones darstellen und zum Marktstart nur in relativ kleiner Stückzahl verfügbar sein wird.

Weder die durchgesickerten iPhone-Aufnahmen, noch irgendein in diesem Text erwähntes neues iPhone-Modell oder ein dazugehöriges Ausstattungsmerkmal wurden bislang von offizieller Stelle kommentiert, geschweige denn bestätigt. Das Essential Phone besticht beim ersten Anblick sofort durch sein nahezu randloses Display und elegantes Chassis, wartet allerdings darüber hinaus mit einigen speziellen Tricks auf, die so nicht gleich zu erkennen sind.

Das Essential Phone bietet die Spezifikationen eines modernen High-End-Mobilgeräts und läuft mit Googles Android als Betriebssystem. Des Weiteren besitzt es ein 5,7 Zoll großes Edge-to-Edge Display, das mit 2560 x 1312 Pixel auflöst und ein Seitenverhältnis von 19:10 bietet. Damit ist es nach der Samsung Galaxy S8 Reihe und dem LG G6 ein weiteres Smartphone in diesem Jahr, das ein etwas ungewöhnliches, nahezu randloses Display mitbringt. Ein Detail des Essential Phones ist jedoch entschieden anderes gelöst als bei der Konkurrenz: Die Frontkamera sitzt mittig der oberen Gerätekante und ragt aufgrund des dort praktisch nicht vorhandenen Rahmens direkt in das Display hinein. Da an dieser Stelle die Android-Statusleiste für gewöhnlich keine Symbole darstellt, soll dies aber für den Nutzer nicht weiter störend sein.



In Sache Design-Ästhetik präsentiert sich das Essential Phone in schlichter Eleganz, aber breiter und insgesamt kantiger als etwa die Galaxy S8 Reihe. Außerdem ist das Display an den beiden Seiten nicht gekrümmt wie bei den Samsung-Flaggschiffen. Essential will sein neues Smartphone aber gar nicht so sehr durch das randlose Display, sondern vielmehr durch seine Robustheit und Erweiterbarkeit von der Konkurrenz abheben. Das Chassis besteht daher aus einem Titanium-Rahmen kombiniert mit einer Keramik-Rückseite, auf der neben einem Fingerabdrucksensor auch ein proprietärer Anschluss sitzt, der das magnetische andocken von Accessoires erlaubt. Essential hat bislang zwei solcher Module enthüllt: Eine 360 Grad Kamera, die Videos mit einer Auflösung von 3840 x 1920 Pixeln bei 30 Bilder pro Sekunde aufzeichnet, und eine Ladestation.

Der integrierte Akku weist eine Kapazität von 3040 mAh auf. Damit bringt das Gerät 185 Gramm auf die Waage. Die Abmessungen gibt Essential mit 141,5 x 71,1 x 7,8 Millimeter an.

Zusätzlich zum randlosen Display, der Erweiterbarkeit und der widerstandsfähigen Chassis-Konstruktion kann das Essential Phone schließlich auch High-End-Chiptechnik auf dem Niveau der Konkurrenz in die Waagschale werfen. Es unterstützt alle gängigen drahtlosen Funkverbindungen sowie schnelles 4G LTE und wird von Qualcomms Snapdragon 835 angetrieben. Daneben kommen 4 Gigabyte RAM und 128 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher zum Einsatz. Komplettiert wird die Ausstattung schließlich durch eine 8 Megapixel Frontkamera und eine Dual-Kamera auf der Rückseite. Letztere bietet einen regulären 13 Megapixel sowie einen Monochrom Sensor. Essential setzt für die Kamera also auf dasselbe Prinzip wie Huawei bei seinen Premium-Modellen der P9 und P10 Reihe.



Das Essential Phone wird offiziellen Angaben nach mit einer an der Oberfläche so gut wie nicht von Googles Android 7 Nougat zu unterscheidenden OS-Version ausgeliefert und soll in den USA ab Juni 2017 erhältlich sein. Der Hersteller wird das Smartphone dort in den drei Farbvarianten Schwarz, Weiß und Grün/Kupfer zum Preis von 700 US-Dollar (ohne Accessoires und Mehrwertsteuer) anbieten. Ab wann das Essential Phone offiziell auch in Europa respektive Deutschland verfügbar sein wird, ist im Moment nicht bekannt.

Für viele PC-Spieler, die häufig unterwegs sind, ist es ein seit langem gehegter Traum: Ein schickes Notebook, das zwar besonders flach und leicht ist wie ein Ultrabook, aber dennoch die Performance eines deutlich klobigeren Gaming-Notebooks bietet. Dank der zunehmenden Verbreitung der Thunderbolt 3 Schnittstelle und dazu passender externer GPU-Docking-Stationen sowie den Bemühungen einiger Hersteller wie etwa Razer ist die Branche dem Ziel, diesen Traum zur Wirklichkeit zu machen, in den letzten Jahren näher denn je gekommen. Nun will Nvidia mit einem in Eigenregie entwickelten Konzept, das kurz und knapp als Max-Q bezeichnet wird, endlich die fehlenden Bausteine für Notebook-OEMs bieten, um auch noch die letzten Hürden vor dem besagten Ziel überwinden zu können. Das neue Konzept wird bereits von ersten Herstellern umgesetzt.

Bei Nvidias Max-Q spielen selbstverständlich die energieeffizient arbeitenden Pascal-Grafikchips des Unternehmens, die etwa in der aktuellen GeForce GTX 10 Serie zum Einsatz kommen, eine zentrale Rolle. Dank diesen sowie bestimmten vordefinierten Richtlinien, an die sich Notebook-Hersteller im Rahmen des gesamten Produktkonzepts zu halten haben, verspricht der US-Grafikspezialist für die nahe Zukunft super-flache, leichte Premium-Notebooks mit ultimativer Gaming-Power. Zu diesen Geräten sollen beispielsweise Modelle zählen, die mit leistungsstarker GeForce GTX 1080 bestückt sind, jedoch lediglich 18 Millimeter Bauhöhe aufweisen. Zum Vergleich: Apples beliebtes MacBook Air ist maximal 17 Millimeter dick, kann aber natürlich nicht mit High-End-Komponenten, sondern lediglich einem Intel Dual-Core-Chip der U-Serie und einer integrierten Intel-GPU aufwarten.

Wie ist es aber für Nvidia möglich, ein bislang in dieser Form nicht umsetzbares Notebook-Design Realität werden zu lassen? Die Chipschmiede beschreibt Max-Q als eine komplexes Konzept, bei dem gewissermaßen jeder Bereich der Notebook-Konstruktion unter die Lupe genommen und analysiert wurde. Herstellern erhalten aufgrund der Erkenntnisse von Nvidia verschiedene Vorgaben zu Design-Aspekten, was bei der Bauhöhe des Notebook-Chassis beginnt und über verwendbare Materialien sowie Komponenten bis hin zu Kühllösungen und geeigneten Chips reicht.

Darüber hinaus - und das ist sehr wichtig - gehen mit den Max-Q-Spezifikationen zahlreiche Optimierungen für das Temperatur-Management und die Spannungsversorgung der Pascal-Grafiklösungen von Nvidia einher. Diese erlauben es den leistungsstarken GPUs überhaupt erst, in einem flachen Notebook-Chassis ausreichend kühl und mit hoher Performance zu arbeiten. Nvidia verspricht trotz deutlich reduziertem Strombedarf vergleichbare Performance zu deutlich klobigeren Notebooks.

All das soll schlussendlich also ganz konkret darin gipfeln, dass kommende Max-Q-Notebooks genug Leistung bieten können, um PC-Spiele in hoher Qualität mit 4K-Auflösung darzustellen, dabei aber kaum größer, schwerer und dicker ausfallen als Apples bekanntes MacBook Air.

Unter anderem bauen Alienware, Asus, Acer und HP entsprechende Geräte. Erste Vertreter dieser neuen Art von Gaming-Laptops, die mit einer GeForce GTX 1080, 1070 oder 1060 ausgerüstet sind, sollen am 27. Juni 2017 offiziell auf dem internationalen Markt eingeführt werden.

MSI hat zur Computex 2017 überarbeitete Modellvarianten der relativ flachen und leichten Gaming-Notebooks GE63VR und GE73VR Raider sowie das neue High-End-Topmodell GT75VR Titan vorgestellt. Die kommenden Geräte der beliebten GE-Reihe bieten ein verbessertes Display, eine RGB-beleuchtete Tastatur, ein etwas modifiziertes Chassis-Design sowie ein paar Veränderungen unter der Haube. Das GT75VR ist das erwartete 17 Zoll Kraftpaket mit aktuellen High-End-GPUs, übertaktbarer CPU und mechanischem Keyboard.



Die neuen Vertreter der bekannten GE-Reihe wirken aufgrund ihres veränderten Gehäuse schlichter und eleganter als andere Gaming-Notebooks von MSI. Sowohl das GE63VR als auch das GE73VR Raider bekommen vom Hersteller zudem ein 120 Hertz Display spendiert, das bislang nur teureren MSI-Modellreihen vorbehalten war. Dieses Panel soll den NTSC Farbraum zu 94 Prozent abdecken und dürfte somit auch für anspruchsvolle Nutzer eine zufriedenstellende Qualität bieten.
Ebenfalls zur Ausstattung der neuen Geräte gehören Lautsprecher von Dynaudio, die einen besonders wuchtig Sound liefern sollen, eine Tastatur von Steelseries mit RGB-Beleuchtung, bei der sich auf Wunsch jede einzelne Taste mit einer anderen Farbnote „verzieren“ lässt, und die Cooler Boost 5 Kühltechnologie von MSI, die die Temperaturen von Prozessor, Grafikchip und anderer wichtiger Innereien stets auf einem angemessenen Niveau halten und auch das Übertakten zulassen soll.

Was die für Gaming-Notebooks entscheidenden Komponenten wie CPU und Grafikeinheit angeht, verbaut MSI bei seinen neuen GE-Modellen aktuelle Technik von Intel und Nvidia. Als Hauptprozessor kommen also Intels Quad-Core-Chips der 7. Core-Generation (Kaby Lake), als Grafiklösung eine Nvidia GeForce 10 Serie GPU bis hin zur GTX 1070 zum Einsatz.

DayStar had already dropped out the month before, Motorola quit soon after the Power Computing announcement, Pioneer gave up the next month, and the rest soon followed – except Umax, which managed to wrangle an OS 8 license for low-cost clones. That final clonemaker held on until 27 May 1998. After it threw in the towel, the clone era was over.

When Steve Jobs introduced the iMac on 6 May 1998 at Cupertino’s Flint Center for the Performing Arts – the same venue where he popped the original Macintosh out of its bag – he said: “We think iMac is going to be a really big deal.”Behind that confident assessment, he must have been thinking, “OMG, OMG, OMG, this gamble better pay off, or we be screwed.”In hindsight, it's clear that Apple’s salto mortale landed solidly on its feet, and went on to not only revitalise a company – and a line of personal computers – that was in dire need of a jump-start, but also to spawn a design language that, love it or loathe it, wormed its way into everything from countertop grills to steam irons.But that success was far from assured, seeing as how the iMac was quite unlike anything that the personal computer market had seen before. Cosmetically, it was an odd duck: translucent, somewhat gumdrop-shaped, and so... well... design-y. As Jobs cooed when introducing it, “the back of this thing looks better than the front of the other guys’.”

Consumer-friendly design was clearly on Jobs' mind at that introduction. “It looks like it’s from another planet,” he said. “And a good planet – a planet with better designers.”The design of the iMac was not, however, something that Jobs dreamed up. It wasn’t even something that his design team cooked up after his Apple coup, if what a former colleague of the iMac’s lead designer, Jony Ive, told The Observer is true. “There is a rumour Apple had designed the iMac years earlier but the existing boss was not interested, so they put it away,” he said. “When Jobs returned and asked what ideas they had, Jonathan brought it out and the rest is history.”The iMac’s very name – simple, not lumbered with model numbers – was not only a break with tradition, but also the beginning of a new one, as the parade of iDevices from iPod to iPad has shown. Interestingly, though, that name was not a Jobsian invention either. It was invented by an Apple ad consultant from TBWA\Chiat\Day, who told Cult of Mac in 2001 that he had come up with it after Jobs had suggested a name – which he refused to reveal – that was so bad it would “curdle your blood”.

Design elements aside, the original iMac was a risk in other ways, as well, ways that meant more to those buyers who were more concerned with a computer's capabilities than its appearance.In its introductory article about the new blue bubble box, Macworld summed up that view rather succinctly. “The most shocking part of the iMac isn’t what it offers,” it wrote, “but what it lacks. The iMac has no floppy drive, which might be forgivable if there were a Zip drive or other removable-media option, but there isn’t.”Macworld didn’t stop there. “And most dramatically,” it continued, dramatically, “this new consumer offering has no SCSI port, no standard serial ports and no ADB ports. Apple has opted to replace these familiar connections with USB, a high-speed [Yes, 12Mbps was once “high speed” — Ed.] serial architecture that has suffered from slow adoption on the Wintel platform despite its technical advantages.”Since the ‘i’ in iMac stood for ‘internet’, it was arguably no biggie that the machine had no floppy drive, since you could transfer files to it using email or read them off CDs – or even CD-Rs, if you were fortunate enough to have access to a burner. You could also plug an external floppy drive into one of the iMac’s two USB ports.

That is, if you could find a USB floppy drive. When the original $1,299, 233MHz G3 iMac was released, there simply weren’t any Mac-compatible peripherals based on USB. Needless to say, Apple was making a leap of faith by forgoing the standard complement of ports, hoping that the third-party ecosystem would fill in the gaps and offer not only USB floppy drives, but also – and more importantly – such necessities as printers, niceties as scanners, and then-popular external storage devices such as Zip drives.Those third-party opportunists did – eventually – and thankfully for those Mac users who had invested in SCSI-connected hardware, vendors such as such as Microtech and Belkin came out with USB-to-SCSI adapters to bridge the gap.But no one would have created Mac-compatible USB devices if the iMac hadn’t sold well – and it did, it most definitely did. Two weeks after it hit store shelves at one minute after midnight on Saturday, 15 August 1998, Jobs told Cnet that demand was outstripping supply, and that Apple was shipping “tens of thousands” of iMacs per week.

In the fourth quarter of 1998 – Apple’s first fiscal quarter of 1999 – Cupertino shipped just under 520,000 of its new translucent company-saver, bringing the total sold since its August introduction to around 800,000. In that same fiscal quarter, Apple’s profits of $152m were more than triple that of the $47m earned in the same quarter of the previous year.Apple’s iMac gamble had indeed paid off, as had Jobs’ insistence on radically simplifying the Macintosh product line and reforming the company culture, transforming both from the confusing, internecine-warfare days of “let a hundred Performas bloom; let a hundred schools of thought contend”.Say what you will about Steven Paul Jobs – and if our experience with the Comments sections of Reg articles is any guide, you most certainly will – but the discipline he brought to Apple’s engineering teams saved the company. And the Macintosh.

And with the return of profitability and the return of sales came the return of those all-important “Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers!” Which brings us to one more return, our choice as the most important moment in the 30 years of Macintosh history.We’ve spent plenty of time in this series detailing just how crappy things were at Apple around the mid-1990s. Michael ‘Diesel’ Spindler had taken the CEO helm from Jobs-replacement John Sculley in June 1993, and ruled for a lamentable 20 months. OK, the PowerPC transition went smoothly enough, but his effort to develop a replacement for the Mac’s aging operating system was mishandled, big time.That critical task fell to Gil Amelio when he took over from Spindler in February 1995, but he couldn’t pull it off in a timely fashion, either. Nor could he quickly get the current – and buggy – OS, System 7, whipped into shape. Not that he didn’t try, but he was unable to break the psychic hold that Apple’s ongoing OS-replacement project, Copland, had on the software-engineering team.

“The situation when I came in,” he later told MacAddict, “was, ‘Well, we’re not going to worry about System 7 anymore. We’re working on Copland.’ Heck, you know, everybody in the software department was working on Copland, and no one was paying any attention to what we were shipping at that time. It took me probably 3 to 6 months to sort that all out.”In this effort, he actually had some success. “We cleaned up the operating system,” he said, “came up with a new roadmap, which led to Harmony [Mac OS 7.6], which wasn’t in anybody’s plans and which led to the existing Mac OS 8, which isn’t Copland, but it’s a damn sight better than anything else that’s out there.”But Mac OS 8 was essentially lipstick on a pig – high-quality, Serge Lutens fard à lèvres, perhaps, but lipstick nonetheless. The Mac’s operating system was lumbered with legacy requirements, legacy code, and legacy problems. Amelio knew it, the Macintosh faithful knew it, and developers knew it.

And Copland wasn’t going to be ready anytime soon. Announced in March 1995 and soon renamed System 8 or Mac OS 8 - not to be confused with the Mac OS 8 that eventually did ship, which was simply the next iteration of the Mac’s long-standing OS – Copland was originally scheduled to ship the following year.
In fact, when Copland System 8 Mac OS 8 was demoed at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in May 1996, it was a train wreck. As one attendee told MacTech: “There were tantalising glimpses of the goodies to come, but the overall experience was awful. It does not yet support text editing, so you couldn’t actually do anything except open and view documents (any dialog field that needed something typed into it was blank and dead). Also, it was incredibly fragile and crashed repeatedly, often corrupting system files on the disk in the process. The demo staff reformatted and rebuilt the hard disks at regular intervals. It was incredible that they even let us see the beast.”

You can chalk up Copland’s problems to any number of sources: poor engineering management, feature creep, engineers who cared more about turf than shipping, internal conflicts among departments, lack of clear priorities, or all of the above. In any case, it’s to Amelio’s credit that he reached outside of Apple and back to his previous stomping grounds, National Semiconductor, and recruited Ellen Hancock to be Apple’s CTO, and charged her with whipping the Copland project into shape.Hancock took a look at Copland, took a look at the engineering culture at Apple, took a look at the calendar, and cancelled the Copland project in August 1996. From her point of view, it would be more efficient and timely for Apple to simply seek out a modern third-party operating system than to create its own.

Wer eines dieser Geräte besitzt und die Vorschauversion ausprobieren möchte, muss sich lediglich auf der Android Beta Webseite zur Teilnahme an dem Programm registrieren.

Der chinesische Smartphone-Hersteller OnePlus hat für sein aktuelles Flaggschiff-Smartphone OnePlus 3T die neue Farbvariante „Midnight Black“ angekündigt. Das ganz in Schwarz gehaltene 3T soll mittelfristig für jeden interessierten Kunden zu bekommen sein, wird allerdings zunächst nur in einer auf 250 Stück limitierten Auflage über die Webseite der Lifestyle-Marke HYPEBEAST vertrieben werden. Der Verkauf dort startet am kommenden Freitga, den 24. März 2017.

Das OnePlus 3T als Midnight Black Edition ist mit den bislang erhältlichen Modellvarianten identisch, wird jedoch ausschließlich mit 128 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher angeboten werden. Der empfohlene Verkaufspreis liegt analog zu den anderen 128-Gigabyte-Versionen bei 479 US-Dollar beziehungsweise 479 Euro in Europa. Wichtigste Ausstattungsmerkmale des Smartphones sind ein Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 Prozessor, ein 5,5 Zoll großes AMOLED-Display mit Full-HD-Auflösung sowie 6 Gigabyte RAM, ein 3400 mAh Akku und eine 16 Megapixel Hauptkamera mit optischem Bildstabilisator.



Wer das OnePlus 3T nicht unbedingt ganz in Schwarz haben muss und auch mit 64 Gigabyte internem Speicher klarkommt, der kann ein paar Euro sparen und muss dabei nicht mit dem zunächst streng limitierten Angebot hadern. In den Farbvarianten Gunmetal und Soft Gold bietet OnePlus das Smartphone über die eigene Webseite auch mit 64 Gigabyte Speicher für 439 Euro an. OnePlus macht im Moment noch keine Angaben dazu, wann genau das schwarze 3T in größerer Stückzahl verfügbar sein soll. Bedient werden aber dann in jedem Fall die Märkte Europa und USA.
Samsung hätte vermutlich gut daran getan, sein für den 29. März 2017 angesetztes Unpacked-Event ein paar Wochen früher abzuhalten. Schließlich werden mittlerweile täglich inoffizielle Fotos, Videos oder auch durchgesichertes Werbematerial zur neuen Galaxy S8 Reihe im Netz veröffentlicht. Da aber noch immer eine Woche bis zur Vorstellung des nächsten Galaxy hin ist, gehen auch die Leaks munter weiter. Heute sind detaillierte Angaben zur Display-Auflösung des Galaxy S8 und S8+ an der Reihe, sowie Infos zu einer Docking-Station, die Samsung als Zubehör für die Smartphones verkaufen wird. Zu guter Letzt stellt auch der Reporter Evan Blass ein weiteres Bild über Twitter bereit, welches beide neue High-End-Smartphones in drei Farbvarianten und im besten Licht zeigt.

Die signifikanteste unter den brandaktuellen Enthüllungen zur Galaxy S8 Reihe kommt von WinFuture. Nachdem schon früher Hinweise durchgesickert waren, dass Samsung eine Desktop-Docking-Station namens DeX für die neuen High-End-Smartphones anbieten könnte, liefert die Publikation nun ein Bild sowie einige interessante Details zu eben diesem Accessoire. Demnach wird DeX nicht nur über einen HDMI-Anschluss mit Unterstützung für 4K (bei 30 FPS) verfügen, sondern auch über einen USB Typ-C Port, zwei USB 2.0 Anschlüsse, einen Ethernet-Port und sogar ein integriertes Kühlsystem. Der Preis soll bei 149 Euro liegen.
Der Lüfter ist offenbar notwendig, um die Temperaturentwicklung des Galaxy S8/S8+ beim Einsatz in der Docking-Station in einem akzeptablen Bereich zu halten. Da die Smartphones im Zusammenspiel mit DeX gemäß früherer Infos quasi wie ein Desktop-PC genutzt werden können und potentiell einen 4K-Monitor mit Pixel befeuern müssen, ist es auch nicht schwer, sich vorzustellen, warum dem so ist. Weiterhin nicht klar ist allerding, wie genau diese neue, an Microsofts Continuum-Feature für Windows 10 Mobile erinnernde Einsatzmöglichkeit der Galaxy S8 Reihe funktionieren wird. Wie wird das Desktop-Interface aussehen? Welcher Funktionsumfang wird geboten?

Jenseits der Infos zu DeX wurde von Twitter-Nutzer Ice universe ein Bild gepostet, das die Display-Auflösung des Galaxy S8 und S8+ bestätigt. Auf dem Foto ist ein Bereich im Einstellungsmenü der Samsung-Smartphones zu sehen, in dem sich die Auflösung, in der die Android-Oberfläche dargestellt wird, wählen lässt. Eine vergleichbare Option hatte der Hersteller beim Galaxy S7 und S7 Edge mit dem letzten großen OS-Update hinzugefügt. Vor allem interessant ist die maximale Auflösung, die sich hierbei für die S8 Reihe festlegen lässt. Dem Foto nach wird diese bei 2960 x 1440 Pixel liegen. Sofern Ice universe nicht in irgendeiner Form trickst, bedeutet dies also, dass Samsung bei seinen neuen Flaggschiffen auf ein Display mit 18,5:9 Seitenverhältnis setzt.

Wer sich einfach noch einmal einen guten Eindruck vom Industriedesign beziehungsweise dem Aussehen der neuen Samsung-Smartphones verschaffen möchte, der kommt an der von Evan Blass auf Twitter veröffentlichten Bildercollage nicht vorbei. Darauf sind das Galaxy S8 und das Galaxy S8+ sowohl von vorne als auch hinten in den drei Farbvarianten Black Sky, Orchid Grey und Arctic Silver zu sehen. Die Farben sind nicht zu knallig und wirken allesamt recht stimmig. Außerdem ist gut zu erkennen, dass sich der Hersteller dafür entschieden hat, bei allen Varianten den sehr schmalen Bildschirmrahmen schwarz zu halten. Zumindest wenn das Display aus ist trägt dies dazu bei, dass der Eindruck entsteht, die Frontseite der Smartphones sei komplett von dem AMOLED-Panel überzogen.

Nach der offiziellen Vorstellung der Galaxy S8 Reihe am 29. März wird erwartet, dass beide neuen High-End-Modelle spätestens ab Ende April weltweit erhältlich sein werden. Das S8 und das S8+ werden Samsungs erste Smartphones mit dem in Eigenregie entwickelten digitalen Assistenten „Bixby“ sein.

Apple hat heute neben einem kleinen Update für die iPhone-Familie auch die iPad-Reihe aktualisiert. Die Änderungen fallen allerdings viel dezenter aus als erst gestern noch vermutet werden konnte. So streicht der kalifornische Hersteller das mittlerweile etwas angestaubte iPad Air 2 aus dem Portfolio und präsentiert als Ersatz ein neues 9,7 Zoll Modell, das ganz einfach iPad heißt. Bemerkenswert an diesem iPad ist vor allem der Preis.

Mit dem neuen 9,7 Zoll iPad will Apple Kunden eine relativ günstige und dennoch leistungsfähige Option für den Einstieg in das iOS-Ökosystem bieten. Das Tablet hat viel mit dem iPad Air 2 gemein, wartet aber nicht länger mit dem Apple A8X, sondern mit dem A9 Prozessor auf, der erstmals im iPhone 6s und iPhone 6s Plus Ende 2015 zum Einsatz kam. Ebenfalls zur Ausstattung zählen das bekannte Retina-Display mit einer Auflösung von 2048 x 1536 Pixel, eine 8 Megapixel Hauptkamera auf der Rückseite, eine 1,2 Megapixel FaceTime HD Kamera, Aluminium-Chassis, Touch ID und 32 oder 128 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher sowie ein optionales LTE-Modem.

Apple wird das neue iPad wie gewohnt in den Farben Silber, Gold und Space Grau anbieten und mindestens 399 Euro für das WiFi Modell beziehungsweise ab 559 Euro für die Version mit WiFi + Cellular verlangen. Vorbestellungen akzeptiert der Hersteller für alle iPad-Modellvarianten ab kommendem Freitag, den 24. März 2017. Mit der Auslieferung will Apple dann in der nächsten Woche in mehr als 20 Ländern - wozu auch Deutschland gehört - beginnen.

Eine weitere kleine Anpassung in der iPad-Familie hat Apple beim iPad mini 4 vorgenommen. Das bekannte 7,9 Zoll Tablet bekommt zu unverändertem Preis mehr Speicher, bleibt ansonsten aber unangetastet. Ab sofort gibt es das iPad mini 4 dadurch ausschließlich mit 128 Gigabyte in den Farben Silber, Gold und Space Grau. Für das Wi-Fi Modell verlangt Apple hierzulande 479 Euro und für das Wi-Fi + Cellular Modell 629 Euro.

Abschließend noch ein Hinweis für alle, die eine Apple Watch besitzen oder mit einem Kauf liebäugeln. Apples Wearable bekommt eine Frühjahrskollektion neuer Armbänder spendiert. Diese umfasst frische Farboptionen für jeden einzelnen für die Uhr angebotenen Armbandtyp, sprich für die Sport, Nylon und Hermès Leder Armbänder.

Für die erst im vergangenen Oktober generalüberholte MacBook Pro Serie tut sich nicht allzu viel. Apple führt allerdings ein neues, günstigeres 13 Zoll Modell ohne Touch Bar und mit nur 128 Gigabyte SSD ein. Die 15 Zoll Modelle erhalten neben dem Kaby Lake Upgrade außerdem eine flottere Grafikeinheit der neu vorgestellten AMD Radeon Pro 500 Reihe (Radeon Pro 555 oder 560) mit bis zu 4 Gigabyte Grafikspeicher. Alle weitern Ausstattungsmerkmale sind so wie von den 13 und 15 Zoll Laptops mit und ohne Touch Bar seit Herbst 2016 bekannt.
Zu guter Letzt hat Apple auch noch ein kleines Upgrade für die betagte MacBook Air Familie aus dem Ärmel geschüttelt. Die einzige Neuerung im Vergleich zu den bislang verkauften Modellen scheint in diesem Fall aber nur ein mit 1,8 Gigahertz minimal höher taktender Prozessor (nähere Angaben zur verwendeten Modellreihe liegen noch nicht vor) zu sein. Apple will das beliebte MacBook Air also offensichtlich noch ein Weilchen länger anbieten, versucht Kunden jedoch mehr und mehr zum Kauf eines MacBook oder MacBook Pro Modells zu bewegen.
