Von den genannten Design-Überlegungen abgesehen ist im Moment noch nicht bekannt, ob Microsoft sich im Zuge von Project Neon auch daran wagen wird, Windows 10 deutlich stärker als bislang von Altlasten zu befreien. Gemeint sind damit unter anderem die vielen Einstellungen, die nach wie vor nur über die alte Systemsteuerung oder über andere schon vor Jahren in Windows implementierte Tools vorgenommen werden können, die allesamt nicht im Geringsten visuell an das moderne Oberflächen-Design von Windows 10 angepasst wurden.

Sofern die aktuellen Infos auch nur grob korrekt sind, ist in einigen Monaten - eventuell zur Entwicklerkonferenz Build 2017 - mit weiteren, dann vielleicht sogar schon offiziellen Details zu den Neuerungen, die in Redstone 3 enthalten sein werden, zu rechnen. Zuvor dürfte sich Microsoft aber erst einmal voll und ganz auf die Fertigstellung und anschließende Verteilung des Creators Updates konzentrieren.

Lenovo hat zur CES 2017 seine eigene PC-Gaming-Marke „Legion“ vorgestellt, um in einem der wenigen wachsenden Segmente des PC-Marktes noch präsenter zu sein. Die ersten Produkte, die das neue Branding tragen, sind die Gaming-Notebooks Legion Y520 und Y720. Beide Geräte sollen auch preisbewusste PC-Spieler ansprechen und sie warten mit brandaktuellen Intel-Prozessoren sowie Nvidia-GPUs auf.

Das kleinere und etwas leistungsschwächere der beiden neuen Gaming-Laptops von Lenovo ist das Legion Y520. Es verfügt unter anderem über ein 15,6 Zoll großes IPS-Display, das mit 1920 x 1080 Pixel auflöst, bis zu 16 Gigabyte DDR4-RAM und eine bis zu 512 Gigabyte fassende SSD oder eine Festplatte mit bis zu 2 Terabyte Speicherplatz.

In dem nahezu komplett schwarzen Gehäuse des Y520 verbaut der Hersteller Intel Core Prozessoren der 7. Generation alias Kaby Lake, bis hin zu den neuen Core i7 Quad-Core-Modellen. Für PC-Spieler aber fast noch wichtiger dürfte die ebenfalls verbaute Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Grafikeinheit sein.

Das 17,3 Zoll Notebook Legion Y720 ist dem Y520 rein äußerlich zum Verwechseln ähnlich, was auch die Tastatur mit auffällig roter Hintergrundbeleuchtung mit einschließt. Lenovo wird das größere Gerät jedoch nicht nur mit einem Full-HD-, sondern auch einem 4K-Display anbieten, und es gibt weitere Upgrades.

Dank einer Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 mit 6 Gigabyte GDDR5-Videospeicher kann das Y720 auch in modernen, grafisch anspruchsvollen Spielen mit hohen Details aufwarten und ist zudem besser für Virtual Reality Erfahrungen geeignet. Der Grafiklösung steht ein flotter Intel Core Prozessor der 7. Generation vom Typ Core i5-7300HQ oder Core i7-7700HQ (beide sind Quad-Cores) zur Seite.

Der 17,3 Zöller bietet dieselben RAM- und Datenspeicher-Optionen wie das Y520 wirft als zusätzliche Ausstattungshighlights jedoch auch eine Thunderbolt 3 Schnittstelle mit USB Typ-C Port sowie Unterstützung für den Dolby Atmos Audio-Standard.

Lenovo will das neue Legion Y520 Gaming-Notebook im Februar 2017 zu Preisen ab 899 Euro auf den deutschen Markt bringen. Das neue Legion Y720 soll dann im April 2017 zu Preisen ab rund 1500 Euro folgen.

Auch MSI frischt zur Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 sein Portfolio an Gaming-Notebooks mit Intels Core-Prozessoren der 7. Generation und Nvidias GeForce 10 Serie GPUs auf. Dadurch bietet nun die komplette Geräte-Line-up des taiwanische Notebook-Herstellers die derzeit aktuellsten Chip-Technologien.

Das wichtigste, vor dem Jahreswechsel noch fehlende Puzzleteil, das MSI ab sofort für seine Gaming-Notebooks zur Verfügung hat, ist Intels Kollektion an Core i7 Quad-Core-Prozessoren der 7. Generation (Kaby Lake). Der Hersteller verbaut unter anderem diese CPUs ab sofort in der GT-, GS- und GE-Serie sowie den GP- und GL-Modellen.

Des Weiteren finden neben den bereits bekannten Nvidia Grafiklösungen der GeForce GTX 10 Serie (GTX 1060, 1070 und 1080) auch die neuen, zur CES präsentierten Notebooks-GPUs, die GeForce GTX 1050 und 1050 Ti, ihren Weg in die Gaming-Boliden von MSI. Durch diese ist es dem Hersteller möglich, einige neue Konfigurationen zu relativ günstigen Preisen (für einen Gaming-tauglichen Laptop) anzubieten. Insgesamt spricht MSI von über 50 neuen Modellvarianten, deren Preise von 1069 bis 5539 Euro reichen und die zum Teil ab sofort, zum Teil im weiteren Verlauf des Januar im internationalen Handel verfügbar sein sollen.

Jenseits der leistungsfähigeren Prozessoren hebt MSI auch die dezenten Design-Änderungen an den neuen High-End-Notebooks hervor. Besonders stolz ist der Hersteller dabei auf das neue Drachen-Logo, welches den Deckel der Geräte ziert und das durch eine Schicht aus Corning Gorilla Glass vor Kratzern geschützt wird. Das Logo soll als Symbol für „stärkste und fortschrittlichste Gaming-Technik“ betrachtet werden und wird ab sofort auch nicht mehr durch einen Gaming-Schriftzug unterlegt.

Als „absolutes Spitzenmodell“ der neuen Laptop-Line-up mit Intel Kaby Lake Prozessoren nennt MSI das GT83VR Titan SLI. Dieses Gerät soll neue Maßstäbe in Sachen Gaming- und VR-Leistung im Notebook-Segment setzen, wozu es entweder mit einem Intel Core i7-7920HQ oder dem übertaktbaren Core i7-7820HK sowie zwei GeForce GTX 1080 oder GTX 1070 Grafikkarten im SLI-Verbund ausgestattet ist. Zwei weitere Ausstattungshighlights des neuen GT80-Modells sollen die mechanische Tastatur mit mehrfarbiger RGB-Beleuchtung, die sich in drei Zonen ganz nach Nutzerpräferenz anpassen lässt, sowie ein optimierter ESS SABRE HiFi Audio-DAC mit 32 Bit/384 kHz Sampling-Rate für Sound-Ausgabe mit Hi-Res-Audio-Qualität über den Kopfhörer-Ausgang sein.

Nvidia hat die Bühne der CES 2017 genutzt, um die nächste Generation seiner Home-Streaming-Box beziehungsweise Mini-Videospielekonsole Shield TV vorzustellen. Das neue Gerät mit Android TV weist ein überarbeitetes, kleineres Chassis-Design auf und unterstützt die Wiedergabe von 4K HDR Inhalten. Darüber hinaus legt Nvidia dem Lieferumfang nun sowohl einen (verbesserten) Game-Controller als auch eine Fernbedienung bei. Die Vorbestellung der neuen Shield-Konsole ist ab sofort möglich - auch in Deutschland.

In der direkten Gegenüberstellung mit der ersten Ausgabe ist die neue Shield deutlich geschrumpft. Die Abmessungen der Streaming-Box betragen nun nur noch 15,9 × 9,8 × 2,6 Zentimeter und das Gewicht sinkt von 654 auf 250 Gramm. Allerdings enden hier auch schon die großen Unterschiede zur Vorgängergeneration. Das Industriedesign des Geräts fürs Wohnzimmer ist im Grunde dasselbe und auch die Hardware-Ausstattung ist weitgehend identisch. Da die Shield aber laut Nvidia ohnehin bis zu dreimal leistungsfähiger ist als alle anderen vergleichbaren Streaming-Boxen auf dem Markt, also beispielsweise der Apple TV der 4. Generation oder Amazons Fire TV, ist das nicht weiter verwunderlich.

Angetrieben wird Nvidias aktualisierte Set-Top-Box von einem Tegra X1 Prozessor, der eine Maxwell-GPU integriert und auf 3 Gigabyte RAM zurückgreifen kann. Außerdem sind 16 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher oder eine 500 Gigabyte fassende Festplatte verbaut und für drahtlose Konnektivität wird WLAN nach 802.11ac mit 2×2 MIMO und Bluetooth 4.1 LE geboten. An Anschlüssen verfügt die neue Shield über einen Gigabit-Ethernet-Anschluss, zwei USB 3.0 Typ-A Ports und einen HDMI 2.0b Port mit Unterstützung für HDCP 2.2 und CEC. Den Micro-USB-Port sowie den microSD-Kartenleser der ersten Generation hat Nvidia gestrichen. Als Speichererweiterung empfiehlt der Hersteller daher nun handelsübliche USB-Sticks.

Software-seitig läuft auf der neuen Shield wie ganz oben im Text schon einmal erwähnt Googles Android TV Plattform, die in seiner aktuellsten Form auf Android 7.0 Nougat basiert. Als wichtige Feature-Neuerung der Box bewirbt Nvidia die Unterstützung von Ultra HD (4K) und HDR Inhalten, dies hatte jedoch auch die „alte“ Shield“ mit den jüngsten Software-Updates schon drauf. Tatsächlich neu ist hingegen, dass auf der Konsole Googles virtueller Helfer Google Assistant laufen wird. Der Internetriese hatte diesen bislang auf eigene Produkte wie die Smartphones Pixel und Pixel XL, den Smart-Lautsprecher Google Home und die Messenger-App Google Allo beschränkt. Nvidia wird diese Möglichkeit nutzen, um nicht lange nach dem Verkaufsstart der Shield den sogenannten Shield Spot als optionales Accessoire auf den Markt zu bringen. Es handelt sich dabei um ein rund 50 US-Dollar teueres Mikrofon, welches irgendwo im Raum positioniert und zur Kommunikation mit dem Google Assistant verwendet werden kann.

Yet the extra bandwidth the controller brings shows in the write performance, with the M550 producing a score of 91.73MB/s - as opposed to the older drive’s 75.63MB/s.It’s slighter slower in read performance than the 840 EVO (30.79MB/s) but faster when it comes to writes, as the Samsung drive gave a score of 75.56MB/s in the same test.The Marvell controller also doesn’t have a preference when it comes to whether the data is compressed or not, as I found out. When tested using CDM’s compressed data test it produced read/write scores of 27.22MB/s and 89.45MB/s respectively.I then tested the drive using some real life scenarios. Copying a 50GB folder of small files (28,523 items) took just under ten minutes at an average speed of 73MB/s, while copying a 4GB image took just 30 seconds – 128MB/s average. Similarly, a 17GB BluRay image took a mere 2 minutes 18 seconds to copy at a 127MB/s average speed.

This is not always possible.The situation has given rise to industry terminology such as mobile device management (MDM) and bring your own device (BYOD).But where do we start? What do you get in an MDM box when you unwrap it and what kind of roadmap should firms be following to implement effective MDM in the face of rising BYOD?Simply put, MDM is that area of administrative IT department control where devices are deployed, secured, integrated (and architected) into the network and subsequently monitored and managed (and possibly deleted).

Der chinesische Smartphone-Hersteller OnePlus hat für sein aktuelles Flaggschiff-Smartphone OnePlus 3T die neue Farbvariante „Midnight Black“ angekündigt. Das ganz in Schwarz gehaltene 3T soll mittelfristig für jeden interessierten Kunden zu bekommen sein, wird allerdings zunächst nur in einer auf 250 Stück limitierten Auflage über die Webseite der Lifestyle-Marke HYPEBEAST vertrieben werden. Der Verkauf dort startet am kommenden Freitga, den 24. März 2017.

Das OnePlus 3T als Midnight Black Edition ist mit den bislang erhältlichen Modellvarianten identisch, wird jedoch ausschließlich mit 128 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher angeboten werden. Der empfohlene Verkaufspreis liegt analog zu den anderen 128-Gigabyte-Versionen bei 479 US-Dollar beziehungsweise 479 Euro in Europa. Wichtigste Ausstattungsmerkmale des Smartphones sind ein Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 Prozessor, ein 5,5 Zoll großes AMOLED-Display mit Full-HD-Auflösung sowie 6 Gigabyte RAM, ein 3400 mAh Akku und eine 16 Megapixel Hauptkamera mit optischem Bildstabilisator.



Wer das OnePlus 3T nicht unbedingt ganz in Schwarz haben muss und auch mit 64 Gigabyte internem Speicher klarkommt, der kann ein paar Euro sparen und muss dabei nicht mit dem zunächst streng limitierten Angebot hadern. In den Farbvarianten Gunmetal und Soft Gold bietet OnePlus das Smartphone über die eigene Webseite auch mit 64 Gigabyte Speicher für 439 Euro an. OnePlus macht im Moment noch keine Angaben dazu, wann genau das schwarze 3T in größerer Stückzahl verfügbar sein soll. Bedient werden aber dann in jedem Fall die Märkte Europa und USA.
Samsung hätte vermutlich gut daran getan, sein für den 29. März 2017 angesetztes Unpacked-Event ein paar Wochen früher abzuhalten. Schließlich werden mittlerweile täglich inoffizielle Fotos, Videos oder auch durchgesichertes Werbematerial zur neuen Galaxy S8 Reihe im Netz veröffentlicht. Da aber noch immer eine Woche bis zur Vorstellung des nächsten Galaxy hin ist, gehen auch die Leaks munter weiter. Heute sind detaillierte Angaben zur Display-Auflösung des Galaxy S8 und S8+ an der Reihe, sowie Infos zu einer Docking-Station, die Samsung als Zubehör für die Smartphones verkaufen wird. Zu guter Letzt stellt auch der Reporter Evan Blass ein weiteres Bild über Twitter bereit, welches beide neue High-End-Smartphones in drei Farbvarianten und im besten Licht zeigt.

Die signifikanteste unter den brandaktuellen Enthüllungen zur Galaxy S8 Reihe kommt von WinFuture. Nachdem schon früher Hinweise durchgesickert waren, dass Samsung eine Desktop-Docking-Station namens DeX für die neuen High-End-Smartphones anbieten könnte, liefert die Publikation nun ein Bild sowie einige interessante Details zu eben diesem Accessoire. Demnach wird DeX nicht nur über einen HDMI-Anschluss mit Unterstützung für 4K (bei 30 FPS) verfügen, sondern auch über einen USB Typ-C Port, zwei USB 2.0 Anschlüsse, einen Ethernet-Port und sogar ein integriertes Kühlsystem. Der Preis soll bei 149 Euro liegen.
Der Lüfter ist offenbar notwendig, um die Temperaturentwicklung des Galaxy S8/S8+ beim Einsatz in der Docking-Station in einem akzeptablen Bereich zu halten. Da die Smartphones im Zusammenspiel mit DeX gemäß früherer Infos quasi wie ein Desktop-PC genutzt werden können und potentiell einen 4K-Monitor mit Pixel befeuern müssen, ist es auch nicht schwer, sich vorzustellen, warum dem so ist. Weiterhin nicht klar ist allerding, wie genau diese neue, an Microsofts Continuum-Feature für Windows 10 Mobile erinnernde Einsatzmöglichkeit der Galaxy S8 Reihe funktionieren wird. Wie wird das Desktop-Interface aussehen? Welcher Funktionsumfang wird geboten?

Jenseits der Infos zu DeX wurde von Twitter-Nutzer Ice universe ein Bild gepostet, das die Display-Auflösung des Galaxy S8 und S8+ bestätigt. Auf dem Foto ist ein Bereich im Einstellungsmenü der Samsung-Smartphones zu sehen, in dem sich die Auflösung, in der die Android-Oberfläche dargestellt wird, wählen lässt. Eine vergleichbare Option hatte der Hersteller beim Galaxy S7 und S7 Edge mit dem letzten großen OS-Update hinzugefügt. Vor allem interessant ist die maximale Auflösung, die sich hierbei für die S8 Reihe festlegen lässt. Dem Foto nach wird diese bei 2960 x 1440 Pixel liegen. Sofern Ice universe nicht in irgendeiner Form trickst, bedeutet dies also, dass Samsung bei seinen neuen Flaggschiffen auf ein Display mit 18,5:9 Seitenverhältnis setzt.

Wer sich einfach noch einmal einen guten Eindruck vom Industriedesign beziehungsweise dem Aussehen der neuen Samsung-Smartphones verschaffen möchte, der kommt an der von Evan Blass auf Twitter veröffentlichten Bildercollage nicht vorbei. Darauf sind das Galaxy S8 und das Galaxy S8+ sowohl von vorne als auch hinten in den drei Farbvarianten Black Sky, Orchid Grey und Arctic Silver zu sehen. Die Farben sind nicht zu knallig und wirken allesamt recht stimmig. Außerdem ist gut zu erkennen, dass sich der Hersteller dafür entschieden hat, bei allen Varianten den sehr schmalen Bildschirmrahmen schwarz zu halten. Zumindest wenn das Display aus ist trägt dies dazu bei, dass der Eindruck entsteht, die Frontseite der Smartphones sei komplett von dem AMOLED-Panel überzogen.

Nach der offiziellen Vorstellung der Galaxy S8 Reihe am 29. März wird erwartet, dass beide neuen High-End-Modelle spätestens ab Ende April weltweit erhältlich sein werden. Das S8 und das S8+ werden Samsungs erste Smartphones mit dem in Eigenregie entwickelten digitalen Assistenten „Bixby“ sein.

Apple hat heute neben einem kleinen Update für die iPhone-Familie auch die iPad-Reihe aktualisiert. Die Änderungen fallen allerdings viel dezenter aus als erst gestern noch vermutet werden konnte. So streicht der kalifornische Hersteller das mittlerweile etwas angestaubte iPad Air 2 aus dem Portfolio und präsentiert als Ersatz ein neues 9,7 Zoll Modell, das ganz einfach iPad heißt. Bemerkenswert an diesem iPad ist vor allem der Preis.

Mit dem neuen 9,7 Zoll iPad will Apple Kunden eine relativ günstige und dennoch leistungsfähige Option für den Einstieg in das iOS-Ökosystem bieten. Das Tablet hat viel mit dem iPad Air 2 gemein, wartet aber nicht länger mit dem Apple A8X, sondern mit dem A9 Prozessor auf, der erstmals im iPhone 6s und iPhone 6s Plus Ende 2015 zum Einsatz kam. Ebenfalls zur Ausstattung zählen das bekannte Retina-Display mit einer Auflösung von 2048 x 1536 Pixel, eine 8 Megapixel Hauptkamera auf der Rückseite, eine 1,2 Megapixel FaceTime HD Kamera, Aluminium-Chassis, Touch ID und 32 oder 128 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher sowie ein optionales LTE-Modem.

Apple wird das neue iPad wie gewohnt in den Farben Silber, Gold und Space Grau anbieten und mindestens 399 Euro für das WiFi Modell beziehungsweise ab 559 Euro für die Version mit WiFi + Cellular verlangen. Vorbestellungen akzeptiert der Hersteller für alle iPad-Modellvarianten ab kommendem Freitag, den 24. März 2017. Mit der Auslieferung will Apple dann in der nächsten Woche in mehr als 20 Ländern - wozu auch Deutschland gehört - beginnen.

Eine weitere kleine Anpassung in der iPad-Familie hat Apple beim iPad mini 4 vorgenommen. Das bekannte 7,9 Zoll Tablet bekommt zu unverändertem Preis mehr Speicher, bleibt ansonsten aber unangetastet. Ab sofort gibt es das iPad mini 4 dadurch ausschließlich mit 128 Gigabyte in den Farben Silber, Gold und Space Grau. Für das Wi-Fi Modell verlangt Apple hierzulande 479 Euro und für das Wi-Fi + Cellular Modell 629 Euro.

Abschließend noch ein Hinweis für alle, die eine Apple Watch besitzen oder mit einem Kauf liebäugeln. Apples Wearable bekommt eine Frühjahrskollektion neuer Armbänder spendiert. Diese umfasst frische Farboptionen für jeden einzelnen für die Uhr angebotenen Armbandtyp, sprich für die Sport, Nylon und Hermès Leder Armbänder.

Für die erst im vergangenen Oktober generalüberholte MacBook Pro Serie tut sich nicht allzu viel. Apple führt allerdings ein neues, günstigeres 13 Zoll Modell ohne Touch Bar und mit nur 128 Gigabyte SSD ein. Die 15 Zoll Modelle erhalten neben dem Kaby Lake Upgrade außerdem eine flottere Grafikeinheit der neu vorgestellten AMD Radeon Pro 500 Reihe (Radeon Pro 555 oder 560) mit bis zu 4 Gigabyte Grafikspeicher. Alle weitern Ausstattungsmerkmale sind so wie von den 13 und 15 Zoll Laptops mit und ohne Touch Bar seit Herbst 2016 bekannt.
Zu guter Letzt hat Apple auch noch ein kleines Upgrade für die betagte MacBook Air Familie aus dem Ärmel geschüttelt. Die einzige Neuerung im Vergleich zu den bislang verkauften Modellen scheint in diesem Fall aber nur ein mit 1,8 Gigahertz minimal höher taktender Prozessor (nähere Angaben zur verwendeten Modellreihe liegen noch nicht vor) zu sein. Apple will das beliebte MacBook Air also offensichtlich noch ein Weilchen länger anbieten, versucht Kunden jedoch mehr und mehr zum Kauf eines MacBook oder MacBook Pro Modells zu bewegen.

It’s not a unique product: Apple’s Mac Mini comes fully complemented with 4GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 500GB HDD for £499, but it’s not based on Haswell chippery, so quite apart from the micro-architectural disadvantage of the previous Intel platform, you get a lesser on-board GPU. It’s also not as compact.Gigabyte’s Brix is a NUC-alike that is based on Haswell. Take the Core i5 4200U-based GB-BXi5-4200: it’s slightly more expensive (£310) for the barebones model. Unlike the NUC it comes with single-band 802.11n Wi-Fi bundled, but a lesser GPU, the Intel HD 4400. That said, the Brix range is more extensive, running from a £170 Celeron-based unit up to a £500 version with a Core i7, so there’s more scope to match budget to required functionality.Of course, if you don’t care about form-factor, you can pick up a cheap laptop for under £400 these days. But that form-factor is the whole point of the NUC.Intel has revised its micro-desktop to deal with all of the criticisms levelled at the last version: more complete connectivity, better media centre friendliness and, of course, the lean Haswell processor. It really is now the ideal media centre micro. And it makes a darn fine little office desktop too.

The keys feel pretty good – positive and no nasty surprises, although there’s a fair bit of flexing on the backplate, which doesn’t inspire confidence, but as there were no accompanying creaks and clunks from the keys or the trackpad, I could live with this.That said, the trackpad's lack of sensitivity often required more deliberate pressure to ensure it would respond to two finger scrolling. The inertial scrolling wasn't too helpful here, bouncing back the page when letting go, which was odd. Still, the Synaptics trackpad control panel has plenty of options to help subdue some of this tricky behaviour.Lest we forget the touchscreen. Familiarity with Windows 8 has shifted my earlier concerns that without a touchscreen, you were sunk. These days, smearing a finger across a glossy screen happens only occasionally – usually when some unwanted desktop shape-shifting has occurred and I’m after a quick fix.

Knocking out this review on a display this size meant I didn’t have to zoom into Word to enlarge the type. This amount of screen acreage has its pros and cons, though. I did notice a fair bit of shading when viewing off-axis and the screen tilt angle also seemed very sensitive to this. It was most noticeable with white backgrounds - hence when typing up this review is when it really attracted my attention.I could see more evidence in photos – a white flower, a bowl of rice. Sit still though, and it's not a problem. However, the reflections just compound the issue, but maybe having a bigger screen makes dancing digits on the keyboard all the more obvious.Dell claims the display intensity is 300nits and while it’s certainly bright enough, it’s no Samsung dazzler. A nose around the drivers suggests this 1920 x 1080-pixels touchscreen panel is an LG model, although little is said about it, just some obscure references to an LGD040E driver ID and some reports that suggest it's IPS too.

That said, on various forums, user speculation is rife that Dell Inspiron displays come from unheard of Chinese manufacturers. Perhaps Dell should be a little more forthcoming on the spec here, as an "LED backlit touch display" doesn't give much away.Rather surprisingly, the Dell Inspiron 15 didn’t arrive with Windows 8.1 pre-installed but getting the update running was easy enough, apart from the tiresome dance of the seven veils the installer does as it goes about “Getting things ready”. Including downloading, it was all done in an hour, unlike my Atom tablet experience.I thought it best to do all the testing with Windows 8.1, as any buyer would update their Inspiron. The performance leaves little to complain about. It was slightly hesitant running apps after a new log-in set-up, but once that had bedded in, it's been fairly smooth ever since.

FutureMark’s PCMark 8 benchmark gave a Home Score best of 3078, which given there’s no SSD or hybrid cache speed boosting funkiness, it’s a perfectly acceptable result at this price. It makes you wonder how much further up the benchmark scale an SSD would take it. As it stands, this Core i7 Inspiron 15 notched up a casual gaming frame rate of 22fps. A tad tardy, but manageable and lowering the screen resolution to 1366 x 768 will almost double that figure.At best, booting from cold to the desktop took 23 seconds, although there were several occasions when it was over 40 seconds. Having Haswell inside delivers battery savings and a rapid wake from sleep; even on this HDD machine it was aroused from dozing in a second or two. As for the battery, the PCMark 8 endurance test clocked up a meagre 3hrs 23mins, but this benchmark tends to be a hard task master and the screen was on full brightness too.Dell claims 7hrs 24mins for the Core i5 version, but I couldn't find its figures for this Core i7 model. In general use, with screen dimming, around 5 hours was possible and no doubt frugal settings for undemanding labours could roughly double our PCMark 8 score from the 4-cell, 58Whr Li-ion battery.

Samsung has revealed what it dubs the "industry's first" one-terabyte solid-state drive in the compact mSATA form factor. From what we know of the SSD landscape, their claim is an honest one – by over a factor of two, seeing as how 480GB mSATA SSDs from Crucial and a few others are the most capacious such drives available in the non-OEM market of which we're aware.SSDs in the mSATA – mini-Serial ATA – form factor are targeted at thin and light laptops, such as what Intel has trademarked as Ultrabooks and AMD calls ultrathins. The little fellows could also find homes in the tablet-laptop mashups Chipzilla has dubbed "2-in-1s", formerly known as "convertibles", or even in tablets, should your wallet be thick enough to spring for one.Not that we know yet exactly how thick that wallet would need to be. Although Samsung announced the mSATA additions to its 840 EVO SSD line on Monday – the SATA line was announced in July – and said that it would be available globally later this month, it didn't provide a price for either the 1TB version or its 120GB, 250GB, and 500GB siblings.According to Samsung, the new mSATA form factor is approximately a quarter the size of a standard SATA 2.5-inch SSD. In its 1TB configuration, the mSATA drive is 3.85mm thick and weighs 8.5 grams – about 40 per cent as thick and one-twelfth as heavy as a "typical" hard disk drive.

To fit 1TB onto the mSATA form factor, Samsung crams four memory packages onto the mSATA card, with each package having 16 layers of 128Gb NAND chips, each fabbed in what Sammy refers to as its "10-nanometer class process technology."The 1TB version can perform 98,000 random read and 90,000 random write IOPS, Samsung says, and can achieve sequential read speeds of 540 MB/sec and write speeds of 520 MB/sec. When running Samsung's Magician 4.3 software, the company claims sequential read speeds can be goosed to over 1GB/sec in RAPID (real-time accelerated processing of I/O data) mode – a performance than Sammy says is "approximately twice that of a typical SATA SSD and ten times of an average HDD."That level of performance is nowhere near that of the 3GB/sec that Samsung claims for its enterprise-level 1.6TB XS1715 SSD, which connects to its host over the PCIe-based NVMe – non-volatile memory express – protocol, but for a laptop or tablet, 1GB/sec ain't shabby. I mean, the whole darned operating system is geared for search, is this really necessary? Der führende Antivirus-Tester AV Comparitives hat im Februar dieses Jahres 110 Sicherheits-Apps untersucht, und die Ergebnisse des Tests weisen auf enorme Diskrepanzen hin. Nur 24 Apps er​reichten eine hundertprozentige Quote bei der Erkennung von gebräuchlichen Malware-Signaturen. 26 weitere Programme schafften immerhin eine Erkennungsquote von 99 bis 90 Prozent.
