Asus k50in laptop battery www.dearbattery.co.uk

Likewise, the Aspire E5-573G sports a 1080p (non-touch) display, another rarity among sub-$600 Windows machines. It’s a TN panel, so it doesn’t have the wide viewing angles or general vividity of an IPS alternative, but it’s still sharp, and its contrast is decent for what it is. Since it’s matte, it also does well to avoid glare. All told, it’s a noticeable step up from any 1366x768 option. But again, there are trade-offs. The main issue is bloatware: Asus has fitted this thing with dozens of pre-installed apps, most of which are needless, all of which chew up storage space and slow down performance. It’s worth going out of your way to get a clean install of Windows 10 on here.Besides that, battery life isn’t anything special at about 4-5 hours (or 1-2 if you’re gaming), and the trackpad feels closer to budget-level than we’d like. (A cheap external mouse seems like a good investment.) The keyboard, meanwhile, is pleasant and spacious enough, but lacks any sort of backlighting. There’s no disc drive either, though that’s less of an issue in an age of streaming services.

Perhaps the biggest reason to hold off, however, is the fact that a newer model just launched. The Aspire E5-574G-52QU throws a sixth-gen Core i5 and a flashier half-white finish onto what appears to be the same package as the E5-573G, so it should be a little bit stronger, a little bit longer-lasting, and a little more futureproof. It, too, is going for $550 on Amazon, but since it’s so new, user feedback is limited. It looks like the better deal on paper, but we’ll confirm in the coming weeks. Based on our latest round of research, though, the E5-573G is still a great get among midrange desktop replacements, especially if you can find it closer to the $500 mark. The 15.6-inch Toshiba Satellite C55-C5241, meanwhile, is probably the most extreme example of the trade-offs you have to consider at the bargain bin. On the one hand, it’s fairly spec’d out for its $460 asking price, with a fifth-gen Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB HDD (which you can upgrade if you’re handy enough). It’s at least comparable to the Acer above for about $100 less. It’s not an outright blazer, but speaking solely in terms of performance, it’s an overachiever.

On the other hand, it’s an obvious underachiever when it comes to build quality. Its fake brushed metal aesthetic looks nice from afar, but get your hands on its all-plastic chassis and it’ll creak and bend at almost every interaction. That necessitates you be careful with it, which means it isn’t the kind of thing you’ll want to throw in a bag and carry around town.Beyond that, it has a typically middling 1366x768 display, a rigid trackpad, and a keyboard that’s just okay. Its 5-hour or so battery life is fine, but not spectacular. It weighs less than the Aspire, but at close to 5 pounds, it isn’t exactly light either. In the end, this is one of the strongest laptops you can buy for $425, and you’re buying it for that performance alone. If you know you can be gentle with it, it’s one of the few solid values in this sector. The struggle involved in finding a good budget notebook should get you to ask yourself what exactly it is that you want out of your laptop. Maybe you’ll find that most of the things you do with your computer don’t stretch too far beyond a web browser. If that’s the case, you might very well be able to get by with a Chromebook.

These increasingly popular machines run Google’s Chrome OS, which effectively turns the Chrome web browser into a super lightweight operating system. They aren’t of much use without an Internet connection as a result — though web apps like Gmail and Google Drive have gained more offline functionality over time — and they can’t run more involved processes like Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Excel. But since you can watch movies, listen to music, write up documents, store files, edit photos, and do a million other things through the web already, they’re enough for most needs. They’re also highly affordable (Chromebook Pixel aside). The latest Toshiba Chromebook 2 is our current favorite in this category. Its Celeron processor and 4GB of RAM don't look like much on paper, but they (along with the included SSD) absolutely breeze something as airy as Chrome OS. You still have no choice but to stick to the basics, but doing so here is much faster (and quieter) than it is on a similarly priced Windows machine.

We should note that Toshiba sells a $430 model with a Core i3 processor too, but that's just about overkill for Chrome's needs, and anything over $400 is a little too pricey for all a Chromebook offers. (The latter point is a big reason why we think the Toshiba is a better buy than Dell's nicer-feeling Chromebook 13.)You also get 7-8 hours of battery life here, which is just about average for a Chromebook, but still excellent next to its Windows-based rivals. There's only 16GB of storage on our recommended configuration, but if you use Chrome OS as it's intended, that's not a massive loss. It's just part of the compromise. What really sets the Chromebook 2 apart is its vivid 1080p IPS display. It’s gorgeous, and although it can pick up some glare, in many ways it’s a better screen than that of a $1,000 Macbook Air. Add to that a comfortable enough keyboard (that's now backlit), a responsive trackpad, superb speakers, 802.11ac WiFi support, and a relatively stylish design, and you have a fantastic overall value at $330 — so long as you can accept Chrome OS’s limitations. If the Chromebook idea interests you but you want something a little more spacious than the 13-inch Toshiba above or the sea of 11-inch alternatives, have a look at the Acer Chromebook 15. It’s one of the few other Chrome OS devices with a 1080p IPS display, which looks good, even if its colors and viewing angles aren’t as vivid as those of the Chromebook 2. It’s not the best-looking device around, and its larger frame means it isn’t exactly travel-friendly, but it’s sturdy and well-made. Its keyboard is dependable, too.

The real hook here is its performance. The Chromebook 15’s fifth-gen Intel Celeron processor easily breezes through Chrome OS, loading web pages quickly and powering through handfuls of tabs with aplomb. It also gets more than 9 hours of battery life on average, which is great even by Chromebook standards. If you’re looking for a Chromebook that’s better suited for getting things done, this is the one to buy. In response to the growing popularity of Chromebooks, various laptop makers have started churning out $200ish Windows machines that run on similarly modest specs. Now, because they use the same full-on OS available on $1,000 notebooks, these devices aren’t nearly as responsive as their Google-bred alternatives. They usually have to cut corners on hardware to hit their price point, too. At the same time, they do run a full-on OS, so they have access to desktop apps like Word, Excel, or anything else you’d use outside of a web browser. (Just don’t expect to get heavy Photoshop editing out of their entry-level processors.) The idea is to sacrifice some speed and build quality in exchange for greater offline capability. In the best cases, all of this makes for a decent secondary or travel-centric device. They’re like modern netbooks.

As of this writing, the Lenovo Ideapad 100s is the best of those best cases. Like any other ultra-budget notebook, it’s not strong — its modest Intel Atom chip and 2GB of RAM can’t handle too many open apps or tabs at once, and gaming is just about impossible. It only has 32GB of storage, its keyboard flexes, and it doesn't support 802.11ac WiFi. Its trackpad is strangely devoid of all multi-touch support, too. It’s a $180 laptop, in other words.Still, when used in moderation, the Ideapad is surprisingly fluid next to its peers. Word and the like are perfectly agreeable, and there’s never too much lag once everything’s up and loaded. The keyboard is well-sized and comfortable outside of that flexing problem, and the 11.6-inch 1366x768 TN display is accurate enough for the money. It’s all good enough to get lighter stuff done. It also comes pre-packaged with a free year of Office 365 and 1TB of Microsoft OneDrive storage.

What really sells the Ideapad is its build and battery life. It’s plastic, but it’s colorful, smooth, and sturdy, with a flexible hinge that helps mitigate the display’s iffy viewing angles. It doesn’t explicitly look cheap. The battery, meanwhile, lasts an excellent 10-11 hours per charge. Don’t expect this — or the HP Stream 11, or the Acer Aspire One Cloudbook — to act as your primary device, but if you’re frequently on the move or you only have $200 to spend, the Ideapad 100s should serve you well. It’s worth noting that there’s a 14-inch model, too, but we don’t think it’s worth sacrificing portability for something this underpowered.Whether for work or pleasure, traveling shouldn’t be stressful. But if you’re the type who can’t stop using things with screens — i.e., if you’re a human in 2015 — you may have no choice but to lug along an overflow of gadgets. That might not only include your basic smartphone, tablet, or laptop, but also a handful of accessories needed to keep them up and running. If that sounds like a problem you’ve had before, the HooToo TripMate Elite should help you pack a little lighter. Priced at $38, it’s an all-in-one device that simultaneously serves as a portable battery, USB wall charger, travel WiFi router, and a network-attached storage (or NAS). It packs all this into something the size of a glossy black MacBook charger.

Considering how many mini routers, NAS devices, and chargers there are that can’t do their one job right, it’s easy to be skeptical of something that claims to replicate all of them at once. The TripMate, however, actually does work. It isn’t the best at any one of its functions, but it’s serviceable enough at each to come in handy on the go.As a battery and wall charger, it works fine. It has a foldable AC plug and two USB ports built-in — one at 1A, the other at 1/2.1A — and carries a 6,000mAh capacity. That’s enough to charge most smartphones about twice, and most tablets around halfway. When you need to charge the TripMate itself, you just plug it into an outlet. The router and personal cloud features are a little more exciting. Of the two, the router functionality probably works best. It’s altogether simple to set up, and when plugged into a modem, gets close to your maximum internet speeds. There’s an ethernet port on its back, so if you’re staying in a hotel room with just a cabled connection, you can just hook it up here and make it wireless. The device can also act as a bridge for multiple wireless connections at once. And with a little ingenuity, you can use it to get something like a Chromecast working over previously inaccessible networks.

Burnout specialist Ben Fanning shares six tips that can help you conquer job burnout without quitting your job. You'll feel less helpless if you assert yourself, Fanning says. Not having authority is no longer an excuse to not make a difference, he says. It's often surprising how job descriptions don't reflect the work you're actually doing, Fanning says. He suggests comparing a copy of your job description to a self-made list of what you've actually been doing, and show them to your boss.If you point out the extra things that you've been doing, you may gain a little leverage by showing that you've been putting in work over and above the parameters of your job, he says. It's easy to complain about the things that aren't going well, but can you give an exact description of your dream job? What work hours, activities, and relationships would be part of your day?

Only you can answer that, Fanning says. If you don't take the time to define it yourself, you'll be living someone else's dream, not your own. Don't simply walk into your boss' office and ask to do something new, Fanning says. Make an actual proposal. It could be a different department entirely, a new territory, or something as simple as a tweak of your current role, he says. It's important to prove yourself first. One way to do this is to work on a project you're passionate about during your personal time and get results. You should enjoy doing it, and you'll have solid evidence to back your offer, Fanning says.A vacation is a great way to take a break from office stress, but there are other ways to get that much needed time off. If you're truly suffering from job burnout, anything that can help is worth trying.Consider using your sick days or asking for a temporary leave of absence, Fanning suggests. Then take that time and completely disconnect from your laptop and cell phone. Use the time away to recharge your batteries and get a new perspective, he says.

Venting to family and friends can help temporarily relieve stress, but it isn't a long-term solution. Plus, they'll likely grow annoyed if it continues to happen. Talking to a wellness or stress coach may help.Oftentimes, a confidential, unbiased third-party perspective with your best interest in mind is just what you need to get into a more helpful mindset and generate a new path forward that works for you, Fanning says.Reports are surfacing that Apple isn't happy with the progress being made on the secretive Apple Car — code-named Project Titan — and that the executive in charge of the effort has left the tech giant.I don't think we should be surprised that the Apple Car is in trouble, if in fact it is — these are just reports, after all, and the real story could be something different. The whole way Apple has gone about developing its foray into mobility has been, in a word, weird. For example, if you figured that Apple was hiring aggressively to bulk up its car team ahead of taking on Tesla, Google, and the traditional auto industry, then the news that the tech giant had hired former Chrysler quality czar Doug Betts last year should have struck you as confusing.

Betts joined Chrysler in 2007, brought on by then-CEO Robert Nardelli, who is now generally regarded as if not exactly responsible for Chrysler's slide into a government bailout and bankruptcy in 2009, then at least for lacking a meaningful vision for the company under its ownership by private-equity firm Cerberus. Prior to Chrysler, Betts was at Nissan. He left Chrysler last year after the automaker, never known for the quality of its cars and trucks relative to its peers, was clobbered by Consumer Reports, with numerous Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles finishing well down the publication's reliability list. At the time, Betts said he was pursuing other interests, but the speculation was that Fiat Chrysler's Fiat 500, relatively newly arrived in the US, was considered such a reliability disgrace by Consumer Reports that Fiat Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne was calling for a head.Although there's been buzz around Apple's hiring of folks who have experience with battery development, electric propulsion, and hybrid drivetrains — not to mention some chatter about a talent war between Apple and Tesla — Apple has yet to bring on a single executive with either a significant electric-vehicle background or a truly major-league auto-industry background.

By which I mean someone who has at least supervised the development of an important vehicle, or who has held a car job that parallels some of the bigger roles at Apple.Mostly, Apple is bringing on relatively obscure people. Betts is something of an exception because he's distinguished, frankly, by not delivering quality products at Chrysler, although he did have a decent track record pre-Cerberus.This contrasts with Google's hire of John Krafcik to run its self-driving car project. Krafcik, who worked at Ford, GM, and Hyundai, is an important figure in the global auto industry, as we noted at the time he made the jump to Google. But maybe Apple doesn't want people coming in with baggage. For example, Tony Posawatz left his CEO gig at Fisker Automotive, a bankrupt Tesla competitor, and moved into a role with an EV advocacy group, according to Autoblog. Prior to Fisker, Posawatz was a longtime General Motors executive who led the development of the Chevrolet Volt hybrid-electric car — one of the few electric-tech vehicles that can give Tesla's cars a run for their money. He knows how to run an electric-car program.

Perhaps he's talked with Apple. But my point is that auto executives at that level aren't currently on the Apple Project Titan roster. Worst case, this means that Apple isn't really all that serious about cars and is simply maintaining an exotic side project to avoid being outrun by Google, which has been developing a driverless car for years, and Tesla, which consistently presents itself as a tech company as much as a car company. It's of course tempting to say that Apple needs to make a big, showy hire to prove that it truly wants to disrupt the auto industry — and that temptation could be exactly what Apple wants to avoid. Sure, Apple hired Johann Jungwirth from Mercedes in 2014, and he was a guy who was supposed to be thinking about the Car of the Future and was based in Silicon Valley. But both are effectively cul-de-sacs — in the US, the industry is based in Detroit and those who rise work on vehicles that can sell over half-a-million units per year.I have the sneaking sense that Apple is really interested in making manageable hires in the auto-industry space, so the Apple leaders who've expressed opinions about cars won't have to be told that they would be nuts to pursue this or that strategy.

One extremely difficult call on that front would be to inform Apple that electric cars aren't actually gaining much ground with consumers, Tesla notwithstanding. It's widely assumed that if Apple is planning to build a car, then that car must be electric. But all the carmakers currently selling EVs see them as a virtuous, largely experimental sideline. In the US market at the moment, big trucks and SUVs are where the action is at, even if GM made a splash at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas with its Bolt EV, now heading for production.Apple, however, can't avoid building an electric car, even if the market doesn't want one. Would you buy an Apple Car that you need to gas up with, you know, gasoline? Would you buy a diesel Apple Car?Apple's legendary secretiveness is an asset here. No one expects to get any clarity on the car project, so it's all just thrilling free media for Cupertino as everyone ponders what the people who gave us the iPhone would do if they tackled the challenge of mobility.

That said, there really isn't a mobility challenge. Apple designer Jony Ive may dislike modern cars — and if reports are accurate, be displeased with what he's seen so far of the Apple Car project — but the bottom line is that most people can get exactly what they want when it comes to personal transportation. The globe's automakers do a fairly good job of providing abundant choice — far more than what people can get when it comes to smartphones and laptops, all of which essentially do the same thing. If I have less then $20,000 to spend, I can buy a Toyota Prius and have a perfectly good mode of affordable, reliable, environmentally friendly transportation. If I have more than a million, I can buy a Ferrari LaFerrari and go from 0-60 in a claimed 2.6 seconds and feel like an astronaut being blasted into space. If you assume that the world is moving inexorably toward autonomous fleets of networked cars that drive themselves, then yes. But Google is already way ahead of Apple with this theory. Tesla has shown that there's a limited market for all-electric luxury cars. But that's not really a massive disruption, just a different choice.

And even if Apple makes a car, who would it be sold to? If you're on your fifth BMW 3-Series and have considered and rejected the Model S for whatever reason, why would you take the leap on an Apple Car? This is the buyer Apple needs to capture, if it hopes to mimic its device profit margins with a car. Otherwise, Apple is doing fleet sales, a low-margin business. Fleet sales, it should be noted, to fleets of driverless cars that don't yet exist.Bottom line: Apple has never done anything resembling a car before, so we should expect there to be some extremely high hurdles for the company to overcome. But Apple hasn't made the moves so far with the project that would fill anyone with confidence that the Apple Car will be a huge success. The WorkPro Ergonomic chair has all the adjustable features of a far more expensive designer chair at a fraction of the cost. It has a cool mesh back and is rated for sitting 6-8 hours. Customize to your liking with adjustable seat depth, tilting posture lock and pivoting arms with adjustable height.

Toshiba Portege R500 laptop battery www.dearbattery.co.uk

A clip tracker is much easier to misplace than a larger, more featured device, sure, but it's also more convenient to wear around. In this case, it's more affordable, too. The One has been immensely popular for a few years now, but it's still an excellent choice for anyone who can get by without advanced stats and values something discreet. If you were trying to pick out a new Chromebook two or three years ago, your choices would be much easier and more limited. But now, every major PC manufacturer has started making their own Chromebooks in different sizes and configurations, making the buying decision a lot more difficult. A Chromebook is a relatively new type of computer. It doesn't run on Windows or OS X, but rather Google's Chrome operating system. Google's software is very basic, and it's meant to be used while connected to the Internet. So if you're the type of person that really only uses a laptop for checking email, doing work in Google Drive, and browsing the web, a Chromebook is probably right for you. There are some things you can do offline, but a Chromebook can't be used to its fullest unless you have a solid internet connection.

So which Chromebook should you buy? The best all-around general purpose Chromebook at the moment seems to be the Toshiba Chromebook 2 (starts at $250). We gave it a great review back in November, and other reviews from the tech media seem to be generally positive as well. Here's what we liked the most:It feels sturdy, too. Even though it's pretty cheap, it doesn't feel delicate or breakable. It's well designed, and borrows the teardrop profile of the MacBook Air, but thicker.
The battery life is pretty great, which is one of the most important factors when shopping for a laptop. I was able to get a few days out of it on a single charge when I used it sparingly as my main personal computer. If you use it for long work sessions, you'll probably get about seven hours out of it.
It's not perfect — the keyboard and speakers could be better — but it's still an excellent device for the price. It's hard to find high-quality keyboards on cheap computers, and most of the Chromebooks I've tested have been about the same as Toshiba's in terms of keyboard quality.

It comes with a 13.3-inch screen, so if you want something in the 11-inch range I'd suggest the Dell Chromebook 11. Reviews of the Dell Chromebook 11 from Engadget, The Verge, and ZDNet have all been positive, all praising the Chromebook's attractive design and long battery life.Acer's line of C720 Chromebooks are also affordable and compact, and are probably worth looking at if you're looking for something cheap and small. But, we still have yet to see a Chromebook that's impressed us as much as the Toshiba Chromebook 2. One of the big surprises from Intel’s new Skylake chip announcement this week was the chip's compatibility with a wide range of products, from traditional desktop PCs and 2-in-1 laptops all the way down to the tiny compute stick PCs.Intel made a point of stressing how even the 4-inch Compute Stick introduced earlier this year will be upgraded with the new Core processors. That means by plugging the $149 device into the back of your TV or monitor's HDMI port, you could run Windows 10, and get some of the new features optimized for it — while consuming less power and enjoying snazzier graphics.

Considering that it's about the size of a pack of gum, Intel’s compute stick is quite an impressive gizmo. It's essentially a fully-functional computer that comes packed with your choice of operating system (either a Windows or Ubuntu), wireless connection, memory, storage, HD graphics and audio. And its upgraded performance with the new Skylake chips will probably drive more people to try it.But does that mean we’ll all one day start owning tiny PC-on-a-stick devices in the future? Probably not, according to some of the analysts we spoke to.“It’s a statement piece that says [Intel] can be low power and also be high performance,” Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, told us. “I don’t think it’s a mass market product, but it answers the question of ‘Can Intel do low power?’ better than ever.”IDC analyst Loren Loverde had a more grim view, saying it’s unlikely the PC sticks will become a replacement for other lower-cost devices. “We think it’ll have a hard time competing with other devices like lower-cost tablets, Chromebooks and Cloudbooks that are not much more expensive, but integrate a battery, screen, and touch/keyboard input,” he said.

While Intel’s own PC stick doesn’t seem to excite a lot of people just yet, Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT, told us compute sticks could become popular if other PC manufacturers come up with better designs and use-cases.“It’s an an intriguing form factor, especially for space-constrained environments and for users who need something highly portable,” King said. “This is a situation where Intel’s OEM/ODM partners will make all the difference. If they come with compelling products and use-cases, the PC stick could be a solid hit.”One effect of Intel's plan to combine its PC and mobile division this year: it won't be as easy for outsiders to see how poorly its mobile business is doing.Today, Intel posted earnings for the fourth quarter, and it'll probably be the last time it breaks out its mobile results separately.Overall, the company posted annual profits of $11.7 billion on revenues of $55.9 billion — up 22% and 6% respectively. But the company gave disappointing guidance for Q1, sending the stock down about 3% after hours.

But the report also reemphasized how poorly Intel's mobile initiatives did last year.In 2014, the mobile and communications group had only $202 million in sales, down nearly 85% from last year’s $1.4 billion in revenue. That division's operating loss for the full year 2014 was a staggering $4.2 billion, roughly $1.1 billion worse than the previous year. In fact, mobile and communications group was the only business segment that wasn’t profitable last year, and by far the smallest division in terms of sales.Intel's PC group, on the contrary, had $34.7 billion in sales for the whole year, nearly $1.4 billion more than last year. Its operating income was $14.6 billion, accounting for more than 95% of Intel’s total.Intel had warned during its last analyst day that mobile earnings would be pretty bad, and the company admits they were late to the mobile game, so today’s results were not a surprise. But every cloud has a silver lining, and Intel’s PC business keeps chugging along as laptops get smaller and thinner. At the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show this month, Intel finally released its fifth-generation core processor, codenamed “Broadwell-U." The new chip has stronger battery life and better performance, at a fraction of the size of older chips, which makes it ideal for super-slim laptops.

As a miniature TV, vibrant e-reader, mobile game machine, or embarrassing picture taking device, a good tablet is still a luxurious way to enjoy some entertainment. In some cases, they can also take some stress off your laptop. So, if you’re thinking of picking up a new slate, either now or sometime down the road, we’ve put together a quick guide to help you come to the right decision. Regardless of how you plan on using your tablet, here’s what you should know before making a decision. As with most device types, the first thing to figure out when shopping for a tablet is how exactly you’re going to use it. Whatever that consists of, it’ll likely have a direct correlation to how big a tablet you should buy.Small tablets, or those with 7- to 8-inch screens, are the most portable of the bunch. They’re the most likely to fit into a handbag or pants pocket, and they’re the easiest to use with one hand if you’re out and about. That makes them natural fits for those who intend on using their tablet like a beefed up e-reader. They’re typically more affordable than any larger counterparts, too.

The downside is that they’re usually weaker than their large-screen brethren. That, combined their lessened real estate, means they aren’t ideal for getting any serious work done. You’d get a small tablet if you want more space for casual media consumption than a big smartphone can provide, but still value some semblance of portability. Or, if you just have small hands. If you’re shopping down here, though, it really is worth considering whether or not a large phone like the iPhone 6s Plus or Nexus 6P could suffice.Medium-size tablets, or those with 9- to 10-inch screens, are generally the best choice for most people. There’s a clear distinction between them and so-called phablets — browsing the web, watching movies, reading magazines, and playing games is simply more luxurious with that much more space. If you’ve cut the cord and hope to treat your slate like a portable TV, this is the way to go. And if you stick to word processing or other lighter tasks, their (typically) stronger internals allow them to have some sort of productivity bent as well. (Though they’re not quite 1:1 laptop replacements.)

You’ll need to free up both hands to use them more often than not, but if you keep them around the house where they belong, that’s not unbearable. Plus, they’re still tablets, so if you do have to stuff them in a bag, it’s not like they’ll be bulkier than your average laptop. The added space typically comes at a premium, but the experience gains should be worth it if you use the machine with some regularity.Anything larger than 10 inches, and, with a few oversized exceptions, we’re pushing into hybrid territory. Devices like the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 or Apple iPad Pro are ostensibly designed to mix the freedom of a tablet with the power of a laptop, but up until now they’ve mostly come off like compromised versions of the two. Oftentimes, they’re too big to use casually as a slate, too inelegant with a keyboard and mouse to use comfortably as a laptop. Add the fact that they usually start around $1,000, and they’re a hard sell for anyone looking specifically for a tablet. Now, these things have gotten better over the years, and, since this is the one tablet segment that’s showing financial growth, manufacturers look poised to continue refining the formula as we move forward. And many hybrids are as strong as a full-on Ultrabook. I know people who swear by their Surfaces.

But for now, they’re best seen as niche devices, something for those with money to burn, who don’t stress their laptops too hard, or maybe need to sketch things out with a stylus (with which many of these devices integrate nicely). If you grab one to replace your notebook, though, just try to always have a desk in view.Once you’ve figured out what you want to get out of your tablet, it’s time to look at which operating system you’d like to pledge your allegiance to. You have four real options to choose from. None of them are perfect, but there’s one that’s generally superior for most people’s needs. And that’s iOS. While the competition between Apple’s mobile OS and Android has tightened up on smartphones over the years — personally, I even prefer the latter — iOS is far and away the most well-adjusted OS for the tablet form factor. It looks great, it’s as straightforward to navigate as it is on an iPhone, and, while it’s gotten more jittery with recent updates, it's still largely smooth on any iPad released within the last few years. It’s the only place to go if you’re still invested in iTunes. It supports the most accessories. It recently added split-screen support, making it more suitable for multitasking and productivity. (Though, again, it’s not Mac OS.) And since Apple controls both ends of the hardware-software equation, you never have to worry about being behind on a software update.

Thomson Reuters bases its predictions on which scientific studies had the greatest number of citations, or mentions by other studies.Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna were selected as potential chemistry winners for developing a method to edit genes known as CRISPR/Cas9 (illustrated above). The technique holds potential to cure deadly genetic diseases, but it's also raised some major ethical concerns.
John B. Goodenough and M. Stanley Whittingham were highlighted as possible chemistry winners for laying the foundations for the development of the lithium-ion battery, the same battery that powers your laptop.
Carolyn R. Bertozzi was selected for a possible Nobel in chemistry for making major contributions to bioorthogonal chemistry — the study of chemical reactions that can happen inside cells without disturbing what goes on naturally inside them.

Deborah S. Jin might win a physics Nobel for pioneering work on atomic gases at super-cold temperatures.

They created the first zero-viscosity fluid, or superfluid (like the helium superfluid above), formed by subatomic particles called fermions at low temperatures.
Paul B. Corkum and Ferenc Krausz might win a physics Nobel for helping us understand the physics that happens at the scale of one quintillionth of a second, known as attosecond physics.
Zhong Lin Wang was chosen as a potential Nobel winner in physics for inventing tiny generators that produce electricity from pressure (known as piezotronic generators). These nanogenerators could be used to power sensors, or wearable devices powered by the human body.

Jeffrey I. Gordon was selected as a possible Nobel winner for medicine for demonstrating how the microbes that live in our gut (such as the E. coli shown above) have major impacts on our overall health, from our metabolisms to our physiology.
Kazutoshi Mori and Peter Walter were selected as potential medicine Nobel winners for independently figuring out how our cells find and fix "unfolded" proteins in a part of the cell called the endoplasmic reticulum, a network of membranes that can be found throughout the cell and are connected to its powerhouse, the nucleus.
Alexander Y. Rudensky, Shimon Sakaguchi, and Ethan M. Shevach could win Nobels in medicine for discovering how immune cells called regulatory T cells and a protein called Foxp3 work.
It's common lore that if your phone doesn't turn on after getting dunked in water, you put it in rice. The logic here is that the rice will soak up the water, and your phone will work again.

But rice can take up to three days to fully dry your phone, and even then it's not guaranteed that it'll work again.A company called TekDry is setting up electronics-drying locations around the United States, where customers with wet gadgets come to dry them for $70 in special machines that literally pull the water out of them in a vacuum chamber. But if your phone doesn't work because the water damage went too far, you won't be charged anything. So far, you'll only find TekDry locations in Colorado, Michigan, and New Hampshire, but they're adding 82 more locations in California, New York, Philadelphia, and the greater Boston area in mid-October. In New York, two locations will be in Brooklyn, two in Manhattan, and two in Bronx. It's actually quite satisfying to watch water ooze out of the sim port and the cracks around this old iPhone:
TekDry's machines can dry phones in 30 minutes with an 80 percent success rate if you bring it under 48 hours of getting your phone wet.Recently, it was discovered that Apple's latest iPhones are much more resistant to water than previous generations. It turns out that Apple added gaskets around the edges and seals around important components into the latest iPhone 6s and 6s Plus to keep water out.

The new iPhones survived a test where they were dunked in a shallow bowl of water for an hour, with only the 6s suffering from a diagonal line across its screen. So you might not need to worry if you drop a new iPhone into, say, a toilet bowl. However, another put the iPhone 6s under four feet of water for a couple minutes, which broke the iPhone from water damage. So if you jump into a pool with your iPhone, you still have a chance of saving it if you bring it to TekDry. (Still: don't do that.)Other phones boast water-resistance, like Sony' flagship line of Xperia phones. But others are doing away with the feature. Samsung, for example, recently did away with the water-resistance in its line of Galaxy smartphones. TekDry also dries other devices, like tablets, laptops up to 13-inches, cameras, and basically anything battery-powered portable device.Luckily, Product Chart has an extensive smartphone comparison chart that tosses all the most recent smartphones into one place. It lets you filter the results by important features such as screen size, price, resolution, RAM, and storage, giving you a great way to see what all your options are.

If you have a specific smartphone line in mind, you can also pare down the results by selecting the brand. If you really want to get technical, you can also change up what the X and Y axis measure, swapping out price for resolution, screen size, pixels per inch (PPI), weight, and storage. Each smartphone links to an Amazon product listing for the device, showing how much it would cost to buy the phone unlocked and off contract.Unfortunately, there are no toggles for battery life, carrier, or operating system, and it's always a good idea to see what deals are best for your specific carrier contract. But if you want a good overview of the current smartphone market, Product Chart is an easy way to digest all the options while focusing on the features that matter to you.Nobody needs a tablet. The best of them get close to blending the productivity of a laptop with the portability of a smartphone, but unless you splurge on something like a Surface Pro, they usually end up being weird approximations of the two. If you want to get work done, you’re usually better off with a laptop. If you want to read things on the go, you’re usually better off with a smartphone. (Or at least a big smartphone.)

Instead, most tablets are still best for luxury. They're something for your in-between time, when you’re sitting around and you want a more convenient way of throwing on a Netflix stream, opening up an e-book, or playing a game of Plants vs. Zombies. They’re simpler to start up than laptops, and fitted with bigger screens than smartphones. They don’t replace the two, but they can be convenient sidekicks to both.Still, because a tablet isn’t essential to most people’s lives, it’s totally understandable if you don’t want to overpay for one. Luckily, you don’t have to. Although the highest-quality iPad Airs and Galaxy Tabs cost $400 or more, there are still a handful of worthwhile options in the $200 range. So, per usual, we scoured the web and did some hands-on testing to find them. (With one minor yet worthwhile exception, which we'll explain below.) We also gave them our usual BI Rating. In doing so, we looked for the obvious. You won’t find strong enough performance to get a ton of work done, but in this range, you’re looking for a media machine anyway. The build doesn’t have to be made of high-end metals, but it should feel comfortable and well put-together. You want enough storage space, along with software that, at the very least, doesn’t get between you and your stuff. And of course, you want a good screen — colorful, bright, and, ideally, sharp. With few exceptions, that screen will be around 7 or 8 inches.

With all that out of the way, here are our favorite affordable tablets you can buy today.Update (2/11/16): We've completed our first major refresh of this guide. The Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 is our new top pick among budget Android tablets, while the Amazon Fire gets a mention as an ultra-cheap option. We've also updated our Apple iPad mini 2 entry to further explain why it's been included here.First, we’re going to cheat a bit. If you can pony up an extra $70 to get Apple’s entry-level iPad, it’s the only almost-budget slate that's worth the plunge. The iPad mini 2 is technically the weakest of Apple’s current crop of tablets, but two years into its existence it’s held up well. Its metal-and-glass build is still refined, tightly constructed, and pleasant-feeling in the hand. Its 7.9-inch, 2048x1536 IPS display isn’t as vivid or deep as the world-beating (among non-OLED options) panels of the newer iPad mini 4 or iPad Air 2 — mostly because of its lower maximum color gamut — but it’s still impressively sharp, and it’s still miles more fine-tuned than the vast majority of tablets in the budget range. Compared to those slates, it still comes off like a notably higher-end product.

The main reason we’re breaking our $200 guideline, though, is because the mini 2 runs iOS 9. As we’ve said before, Apple’s mobile OS is far and away the best operating system for tablets. It’s constantly easy to navigate, it doesn’t force the risk of delayed updates, and it recently added split-screen support, giving the mini 2 a measure of multitasking ability in the process. Most importantly, it’s still something of the default among app developers — if a major app (or game) launches or makes a major update, you’re almost guaranteed to see it as soon as it hits, if at all, on an iPad. Android has closed the gap in terms of app quantity over the years, but it still presents that risk, especially when it comes to new games. iOS also has decidedly more apps that are optimized for larger displays. Explore Android far enough and you’ll still see a few too many apps that are either awkwardly laid out or presented like they’re on a blown-up smartphone. That sort of annoyance is rare here.

The only major downsides are that paid apps tend to cost a dollar or two more, and that Apple’s first-party apps are routinely less inviting their counterparts from Google, Microsoft, and the like. Otherwise, we’d say the added convenience is worth a premium. All of this means that, display discrepancy aside, the iPad mini 2 isn’t that far off from the iPad mini 4. The primary concern is that its specs are aging. But while its two-year old A7 chip and 1GB of RAM will never be as robust as Apple’s latest hardware, iOS is still light enough for them to get you through a YouTube binging session or most modern games without much issue. For the general entertainment purposes a small tablet is meant for, it’s fine. Likewise, the mini 2’s battery can’t power up iOS 9 for as long as its successors, but the 8 or so hours of juice it gets per charge is passable. When it comes down to it, the iPad’s position atop the tablet food chain is deserved. Whichever one you pick, you get the most complete user experience, with an excellent display, in a design that looks and feels great. You don’t have to deal with as many compromises.

Akku lenovo ideapad y470a www.pcakku.com

HP COMPAQ 372771-001 laptop battery www.dearbattery.co.uk

In 2014, Google announced Project Ara, an innovative initiative from its Advanced Technologies and Products (ATAP) Group. At the time, Google's team of engineers and designers had set out to remake the smartphone, giving it a feature it has long lacked.Traditional PCs, most notably desktops and to some extent laptops, have offered a certain degree of modularity for most of their history. Key components, such as hard drives, video cards, RAM modules, and even motherboards, can be swapped out or upgraded over time. In doing so, consumers can extend the lives of their machines, or augment them with greater capabilities whenever they desire. But the same has never been true of smartphones or tablets. A few can have their storage expanded with microSD cards, but it's virtually impossible to upgrade the camera module, processor, or cellular radio. With the right tools, some users may be able to swap out a cracked screen, but it's certainly not an easy process. With Project Ara, Google is hoping to change that. Project Ara smartphones are composed of a series of modular bricks, which (almost like Legos) slide into a magnetic skeleton. Each module contains a different component -- say, the camera sensor, or the battery -- which can be swapped out for replacements on the fly.

Project Ara phones may not be able to offer the same performance as comparably priced non-modular phones, but over time, the ability to upgrade and replace components could reduce the cost of ownership and lead to a flurry of innovation. It also could put pressure on Google's biggest rival in the smartphone space, Apple, giving Android a unique selling point over the iPhone. But it was always speculative: Project Ara has never received a firm release date. Last year, at Google's developer conference, the company unveiled a working prototype, which stoked faith that it would eventually see the light of day. Google planned to conduct a public test of the phones in Puerto Rico during the second half of 2015, but late in the summer, announced that the test had been delayed indefinitely.Since then, there's been little news, and with each passing day, Project Ara runs the risk of becoming vaporware.Or at least, that had been the case until last month, when Google's tablet showed up in the GFXBench database. Labeled a Project Ara tablet, it suggests that Google could be expanding its modularity initiative to larger devices. On May 18, Google will hold its 2016 developer conference, and a Project Ara tablet could make for an interesting announcement.

Regardless, there's a good chance this year's Google I/O will center around Android tablets. In recent years, Google has used the conference to announce and detail the latest version of its Android operating system. Earlier this month, Google released an early preview of the next version of Android (Android N) aimed at developers. Android N is likely to include support for a vast array of new features, but the most crucial may center around multitasking.Last year, Apple gave its iPads multitasking capabilities. With iOS 9, newer iPad models can run two tablet apps simultaneously. Obviously, this allows for much greater productivity and convenience. Some of Google's hardware partners have implemented multitasking capabilities in their own tablets, but to date, the core Android operating system has lacked such a feature. With Android N, that will change, as Google will bring multitasking to stock Android for the first time. Owners of larger Android phones will certainly benefit, but Android tablet owners could see the bigger boost.Google's mobile operating system powers the majority of the world's smartphones and tablets, but it hasn't had as much success conquering the tablet market as it has the smartphone market. More than 80% of the world's smartphones are powered by Android, but only 68% of the world's tablets use Google's operating system.

In November, research firm Strategy Analytics projected that Google's share of the tablet market would decline in the coming years, falling to just 59% in 2019. Apple would see a slight boost (moving from 22% to 23%), but Windows would be the real winner, nearly doubling its share of the tablet market (from 10% to 18%) at Android's expense.Android tablets have been cheap, but not very impressive. With a radical new device, and Android N, that could change. When Insider Picks published its buying guide of the best portable, Bluetooth speakers under $100 a couple of weeks ago, the $25 OontZ Curve was included on the list. Its cousin, the OnntZ Angle 3 (pictured here), is just as capable a speaker at $30. For the additional $5, you get a more durable and water-resistant design.

Keeping your work bag organized and your stuff in it readily accessible is easy with Cocoon Innovations grid-paneled brief — as you can see, everything has its place. The exterior is tough, too, and able to keep everything inside (including up to a 15-inch laptop) safe and dry. If you miss this deal, which runs out on September 26 at Touch of Modern, you can also shop the bag at Amazon. It's football season. If your weekends are generally consumed watching the sport, and maybe even attending a couple of NFL games, a portable grill may be a worthwhile purchase. The Homping charcoal grill is convenient and lightweight enough to pack for tailgates; it's also $80 off if you scoop it up at Touch of Modern before September 26. If you miss out on the deal, you can purchase it at Amazon and at least come away with free shipping via your Prime Membership.Desert boots — or chukkas — are a popular item you're seeing a lot of as we transition from summer to fall. You can pair the Sperry boots pictured here with jeans or chinos. Or you can pair them with your dressier trousers to give them a more relaxed vibe.

If you buy them off Amazon, instead of another department store, there's a good chance you'll save a few bucks — depending on your size. Same goes for this chukka from Timberland. Aukey's 3-port wall charger lets you charge multiple USB-based devices at once, whether it’s smartphone, tablet, Bluetooth speaker, portable battery pack, or even some newer laptops. At $9, it's one of the cheapest of its kind, but the small price doesn't seem to be indicative of poor quality — 105 customer reviews on Amazon give it an average of 4.1 out of 5 stars. It's listed sale price is currently $15, but you can get it even cheaper by entering the promo code 35SPW7UO at checkout. The offer expires on September 28 at 11:59 PM PDT.When it comes to productivity, willpower plays a far smaller role than we might think. We also have to consider the effects of our talkative coworkers, energy-draining schedules, and way-too-comfy office chairs.Having looked at dozens of published research studies, office design company Steelcase has come up with key ways companies can help people do their jobs better.

"Neuroscience used to be a way that you understood diseases of the brain, but recently it's become more practically applicable," says Chris Congdon, global director of research communications at Steelcase.Steelcase's research shows that 49% of people have trouble easily focusing at work due to distractions. Over the course of their day, this leads to an average loss of 86 minutes of work. The tight, ovular cubicle (ovicle?) gives the stressed-out user a personal space away from the din of office chitchat. It's got a stand for a laptop, a shelf for a purse, and an overhead lamp so workers can see what they're doing. As Steelcase rep Katie Pace explained to me on a recent tour of the company's showroom, Brody was designed based on research suggesting that humans can't help but pay full attention when something sudden happens, like an unexpected visitor greeting everyone in the office. It's hard-wired into us. Maybe the beckoning sound is nothing. Maybe it's a saber-toothed tiger.Based on research that finds our brains have a limited amount of energy to expend throughout the day, Quiet Spaces are one- and two-person rooms with homey decor, soothing wallpaper, and most importantly, a door you can shut.

Together, the amenities enable people to regroup and get back to full energy — a more sustained period of calmness than the quick burst of focus given by Brody. The best estimates say introverts make up between 30-50% of the workforce, which can be severely limiting for a company if it doesn't account for how introverts work best.Companies can install standing-height furniture built for collaboration or individual work and provide chairs designed for active sitting. As numerous studies have found, going on walks stimulates creativity, and ut so does simply standing up.We use far more of our muscles and energy while we're standing than when we're plopped in a chair, leading us to bigger breakthroughs and deeper insights, Steelcase has found. Just by being upright, more oxygen flows to our brains.Apple is reportedly ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack in the next iPhone. And Intel is reportedly helping further USB-C’s status as an alternative digital audio connector — the implication being that it could one day serve as the 3.5mm jack’s successor on future Android phones (and laptops). Some devices have started the process already.

All this time, headphones based on Lightning and USB-C connectors have slowly started to sprout. The point: The way most people connect their headphones to their gadgets is likely to change, with Apple and other mobile companies leading the charge. This raises the question of how headphone companies — the groups most likely to be affected by a fundamental shift to headphones as a category — feel about being taken along for the ride.Judging by on- and off-the-record conversations with several of these firms over the past month, the response appears to be one of cautious optimism.Executives from each of the companies Tech Insider talked to expect the 3.5mm jack’s days to be numbered, but none of them could be described as panicked. If anything, many are excited by a potentially increased demand for new headphones, particularly when it comes to Bluetooth headsets. At the same time, they stop short of full-throated enthusiasm. Companies are still in the process of sorting out what new challenges the headphone jack’s death would bring. Some expressed skepticism over the purported benefits of Lightning and USB-C. In general, there’ll be lots of waiting and seeing in the coming months.

If the rumors are to be believed, wired headphones are likely to split into two camps: Lightning-based ones for the iPhone, and USB-C-based ones for everything else. There’ll still be plenty of holdouts using the old 3.5mm jack, too — Android and Windows OEMs aren’t obligated to switch to USB-C all at once, and things like the PlayStation 4 controller aren’t suddenly going to disappear. At least in the short term, this could make it so you need multiple connectors available to use your headphones with all your devices. Not convenient!Outside of simply buying new headphones, you’ll likely have two ways around this. The first is dongles. One end of the dongle would work with the 3.5mm, the other with whatever new device you’re connecting to. It’ll flail around. It’s not clear if Apple and company would include one with your next phone, or if you’d have to buy it separately.

HP COMPAQ 6535S laptop battery www.dearbattery.co.uk

Ultimately, this is not an issue about how to rip multiple CDs - which has been discussed to death online for the last decade - but a question of how I want to listen to music. Do I really need instant access to everything? I’m happy to keep a big bunch of e-books on my tablet, for example, without feeling compelled to copy the entire Gutenberg Project to it.Probably the best thing is for me to don a red tracksuit, get a curly perm, grow a thin moustache and say to myself: “Calm down, calm down.” Getting my open-crotches in a twist over digitising every bloody thing that comes my way is getting out of hand. The physical, tactile portability of music on a disc is a joy, not an obstacle. The process is simple: want music, get music, put music in magic box, listen. Why mess about with that? Pics+Vid Fans of our Low Orbit Helium Assisted Navigator (LOHAN) mission will know that the issue of getting a rocket motor to fire at altitude has given our Vulture 2 spaceplane team plenty of sleepless nights.

Click here for a bigger version of the LOHAN graphicLast year, we constructed the Rocketry Experimental High Altitude Barosimulator (REHAB) hypobaric chamber (details here), in which we tested a couple of motors at 20mbar – roughly the equivalent of an altitude of 23,300m.Our first foray into REHAB ended in forlorn fizzling, as both Cesaroni and Aerotech igniters went pop but failed to fire their respective reloads.Enter stage left pyrotechnics chap Rob Eastwood, who brewed up a custom igniter from E-Matches, BlackMatch strands and Plastic Igniter Cord. This did the trick in the REHAB chamber, when we finally persuaded a Cesaroni 57F59-12A "White Thunder" reload in a P29-1G casing to roar mightily:All well and good, but a high-altitude test flight in July this year, with the same igniter controlled by the Special Project Electronic Altitude Release System (SPEARS) control board, showed that the Plastic Igniter Cord doesn't much like the cold.

So, it was back to the drawing board for Rob, who formulated a new, mightier igniter ahead of jetting out to Spain for our recent LOHAN team gathering.Priority number one for this elite squad was to test the new igniter, and although first test flight on 16 September went completely titsup due to premature balloon burst, a second blast last Thursday had the champagne corks popping. The payload comprised the igniter in an insulated case (bottom right) and a few other pyrotechnic charges we were eyeing for possible use in our emergency balloon cut-down system - all attached to the SPEARS board and set to go off at 20,000m:Chief balloon wrangler Dave Akerman worked his usual magic with the mighty orb, and we were quickly in the air without incident:Review When Asus sent the N550 to Vulture Central, I sent it back: the wrong model had been dispatched. Having seen so many tiresome comments following El Reg laptop reviews along the lines of “when I saw it was only 1366 x 768 I stopped reading”, I wasn’t going to proceed with this spec - and with more than these moans as justification.

After all, given the N-series comes equipped with B&O Icepower amplification together with SonicMaster (a tea mug sized external bass driver), having anything less than full-HD would seem to undermine the thinking behind the latest refresh for this entertainment-centric 15.6in laptop. So, lucky for me – and for those who might be persuaded to keep reading – I find myself typing this on the full HD 1920 x 1080-pixel model I’d requested. It’s an Asus N550JV-CM067H equipped with the latest Haswell chip, a 2.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-4700HQ with 8GB of RAM and Intel HD 4600 integrated graphics. There’s also an Nvidia GeForce 750M GPU on-board with 2GB of RAM and a 1TB 5400RPM HGST Travelstar HDD.Surprisingly, there’s no solid-state drive (SSD) cache to boost disk performance. The N550JV was dispatched with the 1TB drive split into OS and data partitions with formatted sizes of 372GB and 537GB respectively. This arrangement slightly simplifies file clutter: just rummage around the data partition for that movie or installer, it’ll be in there somewhere.

And talking of data-juggling, the N550JV comes with a BD-ROM optical drive and a bundle of playback apps including Waves Maxx to make the most of its audio, and AsusDVD (a rebranded version of Cyberlink’s PowerDVD 10) to get those Blu-ray discs that we’ve all got so many of spinning away in a useful manner.Needless to say, having four internal speakers developed in collaboration with B&O and an optical drive plus a 15.6in 1920 x 1080-pixel touchscreen encased in a brushed metal lid, all adds to the weight. At 2.6kg and measuring up at 383 x 255 x 27mm, we’re looking at a desktop replacement really, especially with that SonicMaster external bass driver in tow.I get the impression that the cable for what is described as a sub-woofer (just how low it goes isn't quoted) is kept deliberately short at about 40cm (16in). It also features a rather antisocial 2.5mm multi-pole mini-jack, which is going to be a tough find if the connector fails or you fancied adding an extension lead.

My guess is that Asus knows that having the SonicMaster bass booster too far from the built-in speakers will greatly diminish the overall effect of this combination, and it doesn't want that to become obvious. It all needs to be kept in close proximity to keep the sound warm and cosy. For the most part, this is all well and good. Testing with The Bourne Ultimatum Blu-ray disc, the SonicMaster driver delivers all those menacing bass note drones and rumbles that accompany action flicks, sounds that disappear as soon as the unit is unplugged. It warms up voices too and the Waves Maxx Audio Master processing provides some useful controls if you tinker around with the advanced settings.Product Round-up If you want a tablet that is always connected to the internet, there are several options to consider.

One that involves no extra hardware expense is simply to use your smartphone as a wireless hotspot, routing connections over 3 or 4G - if your chosen mobile network lets you. Another option, which has the advantage of not hammering your phone’s data tariff and battery into the ground up their ears, is to buy a 3G or 4G pocket Wi-Fi router. The third path, which involves no extra gadgetry, is to buy a tablet with built-in hardware for 3G or 4G connections. That way you aren’t dipping into your smartphone’s data transfer allowance and you don’t have to buy, charge or carry an extra bit of kit.Or, of course, you could just buy a Very Large Phone (VLP™) and move on from this oh-so-2012 idea of having two touchscreen devices when most of the time something like a Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, Sony Xperia Ultra or Asus FonePad will do the job of both smartphone and tablet quite well enough, all in one rather large device.

But assuming you don’t want a VLP or a pocket Wi-Fi router and would rather not drain your smartphone of juice and data, here’s a quick shufti at the 3G and LTE (4G) tablets currently available, soon to be available and sort-of available on the grey market, here in Blighty. With an 11.6-inch screen, a 1.7GHz Intel Core i5 chip and 4GB of RAM, the W700 with 128GB of flash storage and an LTE modem is the pick of the current crop of Acer tablets, though I suspect you will need deep pockets. At the time of writing Acer couldn’t confirm a price nor an expected UK shipping date. Still, with those components the W700 is undoubtedly an impressively powerful machine for a tablet and can function as a genuine laptop/desktop replacement. Combine those features with a 1920 x 1080 resolution screen and 64-bit Windows 8, a high sticker price can be partly excused. As well as a traditional keyboard-cum-cover-cum-stand, the W700 can be ordered with a rather odd but also rather clever standy-uppy plastic cradle: this has an additional three USB ports (the W700 itself only has one), HDMI connector and stereo speakers, and turns the W700 into a mini all-in-one desktop PC.

With such a large screen to illuminate, battery life is reasonable rather than spectacular - a full charge will get you to around the five hour mark. At 950g it’s not quite as heavy a lump as you might expect. Putting the unknown price to one side, the LTE W700 may well be worth a look if you are after one device to serve all your desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile data needs.Buying an iPad with a cellular radio brings a significant benefit above and beyond the standard wireless connectivity: you get a GPS radio, too. That alone makes the 3G/LTE iPad the one to buy in my book. But it’s getting harder and harder to argue that Apple is leading the tablet revolution these days what with the competition getting better and cheaper - though admittedly not always at the same time.To my eyes, the iPad is starting a look just a little old hat. The UI certainly is, though iOS 7 will remedy this to some extent. The absence of storage expansion still irks. Perhaps Apple will fix this in the iPad 5, expected imminently, but I suspect not.

Of course, all of Apple’s traditional strengths are still in evidence: the excellent build quality, the impressive selection of tablet-optimised apps, the class-leading battery life and the tip-top levels of support from the shamans at your nearest Apple Store. All these continue to attract the punters and understandably so. If you have taken leave of your senses, or are simply £130 short of the iPad’s asking price, you can go for the wholly inferior if also slightly smaller and lighter cellular iPad Mini though I can’t think good reason why you would decide to do that. At £370, the iPad Mini isn’t actually a bad device just a woefully overpriced one.Pics It was the product that was almost immediately dubbed the ‘Faileo’. It was announced but never released. And it can now be yours - if you pony up enough cash to beat other bidders to a one-of-a-kind auction item.Devised by Palm co-founder and chief engineer Jeff Hawkins, the Foleo - to give the gadget its correct handle - was unveiled in May 2007. It was 10.4-inch sub-notebook that was less than an inch thick and weight just 1.1kg. It had a full-size keyboard and ran Linux. It had Wi-Fi networking and Bluetooth on board, a USB port, and SD and CompactFlash card bays.

Akku lenovo ideapad v350 www.pcakku.com

Lenovo Thinkpad R61 laptop battery www.dearbattery.co.uk

Given how thick the iMac is once you move beyond the edges, there clearly is room to fit a slot-load optical drive. If that’s not a convenient location, well neither is the place where all of the iMac’s other ports are located, and you’ll use them far more than you do a DVD drive. If that doesn’t appeal to Apple’s industrial design team, the company should include one of its external SuperDrives for free. Jobs knows the company can well afford this small generosity. After a stellar start to the World Solar Challenge, the fancied Nuon team from Delft has had to cop a ten minute penalty for breaking speed limits, while Japan's Tokai University entrant has been given a more serious 30 minute penalty. The penalties will probably put Solar Team Twente (also from The Netherlands) in the lead at least for a while since it, along with Nuon and Tokai were the overnight front-runners. Nuon was the first to arrive at the Dunmarra control point after Day one, at 4:26pm, followed by Twente and Tokai. With all cars obliged to take a 30 minute stop at the control point, and with racing ending at 5pm, that gave the three vehicles a strong overnight position. They were followed by the teams fielded by Stanford University, the University of Michigan, Solar Team Eindhoven, and Australia's Team Arrow in 7th spot.

Eindhoven's position is a considerable achievement since it puts a Cruiser-class car among the designed-for-speed Challenger cars.By The Register's reckoning, Nuon and Twente will retain their position out in front of the pack, with Tokai likely to find itself having to fend off the Michigan and Stanford entries before Day 2 is complete. The World Solar Challenge says Nuon was penalised for breaking the speed limit. Tokai's penalty (which mean its Tenant Creek control stop was doubled in time from 30 minutes to 60 minutes) as imposed to punish the entry for “the behaviour of its media car”.The field is also starting to thin out: as well as the rollover which put paid to the Cambridge University entry, Japan's Hachinohe Institute of Technology was unable to pass pre-start scrutineering, and since the start, the event is recording New Zealand's HybridAuto, South Korea's KUST entry and the ITS team from Indonesia as being trailered.Trailered vehicles are, however, still competing: having been unable to stay with the pack, they're brought forward to the next checkpoint. At the end of the race they will be assessed solely on distance traveled under solar power.

World Solar Challenge The World Solar Challenge kicks off today, with 36 solely-solar-powered cars about to attempt a 3,000km journey across Australia from the northern city of Darwin to Adelaide in the south. The Reg is following the race – and making some odd side trips you'll learn about soon – but with the cars on the starting line we felt it prudent to offer a look at the kind of cars making the trip. The race is run in three classes, all of which must be street-legal inasmuch as they possess brakes, indicator lights and other niceties that let them run on public roads. The Challenger class is for the out and out speed merchants intent on line honours. Most entrants in this class are low wedges of solar panels broken only by a dome so the driver can see. This year we've spotted two dominant configurations in the class. Here's one of them: a 'dome on the side' rig.We chatted with The JU Team and they assured us that despite the driver and motor residing on the right-hand side of the car, it is balanced perfectly. Steering can be a bit tricky until you get the hang of things.

The team is very popular around pit lane, where the smell of burning photons hangs heavy, because it is sponsored by a Swedish energy drink company that sent two pallets of its product to Darwin. By air freight. Half the competition is hopped up on the stuff, or gratefully using a slab of it to weight something down. But we digress. If you check out the Challenger class you'll also see what we'll call “bubble in the middle” designs like this one below from Team Arrow.A variant on the bubble in the middle design is this no-bubble setup from the UMP Solar Team out of the University Malaysia Pahang. The team jokes that its car is a convertible, but is serious with its intention to offer the driver a better experience by letting them out into a cooling flow of air. It may not look elegant but it's a solution to the real problem of driver discomfort: drivers have a nasty time of it in these solar cars.Let's check out the Cruiser class next. In this class speed is important, but entrants are also judged on how closely they resemble conventional cars in appearance and performance. Points are therefore on offer for items like car radios and luggage compartments capable of brining home a week's worth of groceries.

The car below, Solar Team Eindhoven's “Stella”, wowed racegoers yesterday by not only coming second overall in the time trial but doing so while packing four seats, a USB charger and a two-speaker music system. The team plans to run with four people aboard for some of the trip to Adelaide.Yes, it looks a little crude compared to the sleek entries above, but Hochinoe's team comprises just six people. Other teams have 20 or more people on board, and that's just the folks who made the trip.In any case, under the skin of almost every car there's crude hacks galore. Here's a shot of some ballast from a fancied entry that's typical of what's going on away from the public eye.And now to conclude, a picture of a truck that we bring you in order to fulfil our sub-heading's promise of naming the Snidely Whiplash of this wacky solar race. The truck belongs to Team Michigan, whose name was spat out along pit lane as being prone to covering its car if rival team members walk past. Michigan is apparently also unwilling to lend tools, a crime against solar camaraderie.

One can understand their secrecy: the team has come third in the last three World Solar Challenges, is tired of lower rungs of the podium and desperately wants to win this time around. We should also mention that the team is impressive inasmuch as students from across its titular university get involved: the truck was shipped to Australia thanks to sponsors wooed by marketing and PR students.Allow us one last photo: that of Vulture South's Simon Sharwood cuddling a crocodile. You can't go to Darwin without a crocodile encounter. Simon met this one in a local supermarket where he was stocking up on supplies for the trip south.World Solar Challenge Cambridge University Eco Racing (CUER), Britain's sole entrant in the trans-continental World Solar Challenge starting tomorrow in Australia, has withdrawn its “Resolution” vehicle from the race.

CUER entered the race with an innovative design featuring tilting solar panels, the better to catch the maximum amount of solar energy throughout the course of a day on the road between the challenge's starting line in Darwin and the Adelaide checkered flag. In between the two cities lies 3,000 km of the Stuart Highway and a lot of sunshine.CUER's design attracted knowing glances from Professor John Storey, the event's Chief Scientist, who described it to The Reg as “a daring torpedo shape”. Sadly that shape wasn't optimally stable: the team crashed during final shakedown cruises October 2nd with Resolution suffering the damage depicted below.Resolution did not appear at today's time trials to determine grid positions for tomorrow's start, but The Reg understands that World Solar Challenge officials had given CUER every chance to ready the vehicle for the 3,000km journey to Adelaide.

Sadly, the CUER team today came to realise it could not ready Resolution in time, because tests conducted after crash repairs had concluded “revealed new dynamic instabilities, which we have not been able to fix in the time we have left before the race.”While the vehicle was operable, the team's statement says “... we have not been able reassure ourselves of the safety of our solar drivers.”The team member to whom The Reg spoke was understandably upset, and declined to comment other than to point us to the statement we've linked to above. The statement also say that while Resolution has not made it to the starting line, the CUER team feels their efforts have been well and truly worthwhile.“There are many positives to be taken from the event this year,” the statement says, before listing the following achievements:“First and foremost, our engineers have ensured that our drivers have been safe at all times, with the car’s crash structure performing as designed in the event of an accident. Secondly, Resolution produced its best ever results while testing in Australia, indicating that CUER would have been on target to be competitive. Additionally, we have developed several new and innovative technologies over this design cycle: the tracking plate, flexible fairings, and concentrator systems – all of which will stand CUER in good stead for future competitions. And finally: Resolution has been an inspiration – to us; to the many members of the public who have been able to see her displayed; and to the next generation of engineers.”

Professor John Storey, the event's Chief Scientist, told The Reg the USA's University of Michigan, Japan's Tokai University, Italy's Onda Solare and Sweden's Jönköping University as teams to watch. Yet None featured prominently in the one-lap time trial conducted at Darwin's Hidden Valley raceway, a venue also used for more conventional motor sports, the time trial sees each competitor complete a flying lap of the 2.4km track.Australian Team Arrow was the provisional winner of the event, having zipped around the track in 2:00.1 minutes. The result “came as a surprise” according to team members from the Queensland-based outfit, as Australia's “sunshine state” has not entered the Challenge since 1999. A mixture of students, hobbyists and veterans of that 1999 effort have created a new car in the Challenger class, the toughest level of competitionPit lane at Hidden Valley was full of talk about some cars being set up as track racers, rather than being readied for the 3000km haul to Adelaide. Team Arrow wasn't the subject of a lot of such chatter, or indeed much chatter at all given its dark horse status. The team is confident it will make the distance.

Solar Team Eindhoven's entry Stella turned plenty of heads by finishing second in a provisional 02:05.01, a remarkable feat given it competes in the more lowly-specced Cruiser class. Cruisers are permitted two engines, which helped to propel the vehicle to 135 km/h down Hidden Valley's straight. Team representatives said the extra engine and extra weight needed to make a four-seater helps by improving cornering and down force. The weight's not all from ballast – plenty of cars have bags of dirt in odd places – but instead comes from features like the four seats, a music system with line-in and a USB charger. Already street-legal in the Netherlands, the team told The Reg it expects to do a weekly shopping run when it returns home.Team representatives also said their calculations suggest that even in The Netherlands' wan northern European light, only in the months of December and January would it need power from the grid to charge its batteries. Averaged over a year, we were told, the car would collect enough energy to satisfy an average family's motoring needs with some electricity left over to feed into the grid. Yes, the new XPS 11 is a notebook with a keyboard hinged to fold right back against the rear of the screen housing, just like the Lenovo machine’s does.

Fujitsu FMV-E8200 laptop battery www.dearbattery.co.uk

Setting up is fairly straightforward, calibration takes place by clicking the corners of the screen or whiteboard area so the Edge scanner learns the workspace size. Magnetic strips can be used to easily mount the Edge scanner to a stick-on whiteboard. The eBeam has both business and education packages with capture toolsl however, the business edition features the collaborative Workspace software environment which supports the import of Office, Flash and image files and is PC only. The education version is Mac and PC compatible but lacks Workspace. This eBeam kit might seem more appropriate to pimp my boardroom, but if your work involves unpicking brainstorming meetings, then the content captured may well simplify matters. When I first clapped eyes on this stand with a definite twist, I was surprised to find myself being charmed by its design. I mean, we’re talking about a bit of kit to simply hold a tablet in position, after all. It’s not exactly news but it certainly has a very neat approach. Described as a monkey’s tail, this weighty, bendy rubberised length of heavy duty flex, holds its position when shaped so that it can be raised, lowered or even wrapped around fixtures. A robust suction cup at the business end holds the tablet in place.

While it’s hardly rocket science you can use it to hold a tablet just about anywhere – you can even wrap it around your neck, and have the tablet in front of your Bob Dylan harmonica style, which might be handy for reading or the need for hands-free viewing whilst following some tech info. That said, dock and tail are not exactly light at 840g in total and that's before you attach a tablet. Still this weight does ensure it stays put when place on a tabletop. The suction cup section can be removed and used as a basic prop stand if kept stuck to the back of the tablet
Unlike so many prop-me-up tablet stands, this one brings the tablet to you so if you’ve wandered into a meeting room for video conference with a monkey tail in tow, your telepresence won’t be a view or your nostrils any more. Also app or web authors can see their work in the same line of sight as their desktop screens too. Why not have PDF manual loaded into an eBook reader? You could then work out how to get the best from Dragon Dictate from its commands cheat sheet.

If you’re inclined to hesitate about choosing a Philips monitor, then it's probably passed you by that this sector of the brand is actually run by MMD. It’s a spin-off company from TPV Technology – the world’s largest flat panel producer – that now designs and manufactures Philips TV and display products. As TPV panels are everywhere, it must be doing something right. So what we have here is a 1080p monitor with what appears to be a webcam, but is a low-res sensor that enables the display to double as a fitness coach, well sort of. The ErgoSensor’s spooky my-tech-is-watching-me aspect, actually implements some well-intentioned ideas. It will nag you to sit up straight, advise on viewing distance and notify you that it’s time to take a break. Perhaps the latter will appeal enough to want one on your desk and if you’re found idling by the tea room, you can insist you’re simply following company policy.Besides watching you while you work it features an energy saving trick, as the display dims after a minute when you're not at your desk, rather neatly brightening up when you reappear. For longer periods the display blacks out. Talking of energy, at 29W, the new 231P4QRYES 23in IPS panel does consume a bit more power than the 241P4LRYES 24in TFT version’s 21.5W, which is still available.

Both feature DisplayPort, DVI and VGA interfacing along with 4 x USB 2.0 ports, audio in/out, 2 x 1.5W speakers and a pivot stand that enables landscape viewing. The speakers are probably the worst feature, sounding bright and thin, akin to laptop. Still, do you really buy a monitor for its speakers?Philips isn’t alone with the ergonomic ideas though, BenQ has implemented similar reminders on some of its models with the BL2410PT taking a best guess as to when you’re reading and makes brightness and colour adjustments. No doubt some of you have 4K in mind for your next display upgrade. LG has a couple of 4K monitors – the 27in 16:9 aspect EA83 (£600) for professionals and the 29in consumer-centric 21:9 EA93 (£400). They might not tell you when it’s time for a tea break but they certainly make a big impression.

When it comes to desktop audio and video office tech, companies are falling over themselves to deliver equipment optimised for use with popular communications systems. Flavour of the month appears to be Microsoft’s Lync and, like Logitech, Plantronics has plenty of devices that talk the talk with Redmond’s latest. It’s just an endorsement of sorts, as buying a Lync savvy device doesn’t mean it will fail to function with Google Hangouts and the like. For calls, a simple single earpiece and mic setup is all you really need and I was initially tempted by the Blackwire C710 USB headset, as I find that peripheral battery gear in the workplace has a tendency to die at inopportune moments – the Bluetooth mouse being the biggest sinner here. However, the C710 has the best of both worlds, as its clip on controller unit – with call mute, volume and mode buttons – also features a rechargeable battery to power it for mobile use.Sure you can simply plug it into a USB port on a Mac or PC, but you can also switch from desktop to mobile mode and go walkies with it linked up to a handset via Bluetooth. Another nice touch is it senses when you pick up the headset to answer a call and to hang up when you take it off.

Sonically, the spec reveals the frequency response is merely 100Hz to 8kHz for the noise cancelling mic which has been tailored to play nice with voices and sounds pleasant enough. The headset can be cranked up quite loud too but there’s no booming bass nor a scintillating top end, just a fairly modest response.I’ll admit that I did find the headband a little tight to begin with though, but after a little adjustment, I’d either found a sweetspot or just became used to it. Still, for those with big bonces, it might be a problem and the wireless Voyager Legend UC might be a better bet, but then you’ll have an in-ear system that relies solely on battery and Bluetooth. You pays yer money...Undoubtedly, there exists a chosen few in offices who are kitted out with an Apple MacBook of some description attached to a 27in Thunderbolt display for a bevvy of interfacing options. Naturally, such niceties are not cheap and even Belkin’s Thunderbolt Express dock is a pricey alternative for those in need of additional ports for a MacBook Air.

PC users, especially those with Ultrabooks, are finding that ports they took for granted are now missing. It’s something that StarTech’s docking station sets out to remedy. This USB 3.0 box of essential interfacing features Gigabit Ethernet, audio in/out, two additional USB 3.0 ports and three display connectivity options: HDMI and DVI-D and VGA. You can even hook up two monitors from this selection configured either as HDMI and DVI-D or HDMI and VGA.To get started, you need to instal the DisplayLink manager software which enables the video ports for additional screens and features resolution and orientation functions. I tried it out with the BBC iPlayer on a second monitor, with the dock audio output going into powered speakers, all streaming from its Ethernet connection. On the host PC's main screen this all worked smoothly but Top Gear was a tad jerky on the second display attacted to the dock. This probably won't be an issue for the majority of PowerPoint presentations though and, thankfully, the audio was in sync.

Tests with an older MacBook Pro with just USB 2.0 ports successfully accessed the dock's USB ports and audio output interfacing, but not the audio input. So in desperate times the Startech USB3SDOCKHDV dock could be hauled in for hub duties. Unsurprisingly, the Ethernet and monitor options didn't show up.Ideal for hot-desking or just getting notebooks displays onto the boardroom big screen this all-things-to-all-men device is certainly versatile and after a bit of driver handshaking will get visitor laptops talking over Ethernet so you don’t have to give out the company Wi-Fi details to every waif and stray that pitches up at the office. Exclusive review Western Digital (WD) has revamped its SMB NAS lineup with a Server 2012 Essentials system that I find hard to hate.I have never been comfortable with the idea of WD entering into the server space; it's a disk-peddler, what could it possibly know about servers? This is the second generation of these units I've had in for review, and WD is slowly changing my mind.

Up for review this time round is the Sentinel DS6100. Earlier this year I reviewed its older sibling - the DX4000 - and then my complaints boiled down to "Microsoft makes the weirdest interfaces known to man" and "but it's Western Digital…they who have caused me so much grief!"Microsoft still can't design an interface worth a damn, but any queasies I had about Western Digital's ability to make workable kit are officially gone. The unit The Register was issued for review is a quad core Xeon E3 1265L V2 with 16GB of RAM, a pair of 320GB 2.5-inch OS disks and 4x 3TB 7200 RPM drives crammed into a footprint the size of your average home NAS. It comes with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials and retails for $,3960 USD. This unit comes with two power supplies and has a slightly more capacious 16 TB version available for $4,560 USD.The new generation has multiple possible configurations. At the low end you can pick up a Xeon E3-1220L V2 with 8GB of RAM, a single OS disk and a pair of 2TB hard drives making it 4TB usable with two bays free. This configuration is branded as the DS 5100 and retails for $2,560 USD. It comes with a single power supply.

There is a chipset raid controller that ships with the unit and is capable of doing RAID 5. In this configuration you'll get a respectable 120-ish megabytes per second of sequential write and a little under 500 megabytes per second of sequential read. Naturally, that falls off a cliff the instant you start hitting it with lots of random I/O, but that's nothing new for 7200 RPM SATA drives.I recommend using the chipset RAID over the Windows Storage Spaces or Windows-based RAID 5. The software RAID basically cuts your write speed in half. From a practical standpoint, I found the system able to handle the needs of five real-world heavy users while I was busy hitting it with another 25 users' worth of simulated moderate office traffic. It is consistent and stable in its file delivery and performance degrades quite gracefully as additional load is introduced.Bonus features this round include a video output port and a dedicated IPMI port. These resolve some of the set up issues that were encountered last time. Also, if you add a USB sound card it makes a heck of an HTPC.

Being an Essentials server it sets itself up as a domain controller and offers many of the standard Windows Server features. These include Hyper-V, Access Anywhere, iSCSI, NFS, SMB v3 and more. The glaring omission is Data Deduplication, which isn't included in Essentials. That isn't WD's fault – no conspiracy theories about selling more disks, please. It is nothing more pedestrian than Microsoft's typical disdain for small businesses. No surprises here.Essentials also ships with a full suite of integration hooks into Microsoft's Azure offerings (including a cloudy backup and Data Recovery service) as well as a surprisingly decent set of monitoring tools.Essentials allows for 25 users and 50 devices to be connected to the Sentinel without CALs. Should you desire to step beyond this you can purchase the full Windows Server 2012 R2 license and requisite CALs.In practice, I think these units are a little overspecced. There is plenty of headroom for growth here, more so than I would have believed possible for systems this size. Given that the official documentation talks about the ability to relicence the OS as a feature, I wanted to see if this little box could handle it.

Akku Acer Aspire 4820TG-5452G50Mnssb

Warten wir also einfach mal ab.

HP B6N04EA laptop battery www.dearbattery.co.uk

The older GeekBench 2 rated the Air at 2378, compared to 1766 for the iPad 4. That’s certainly not the 2x increase claimed by Apple, but it’s still a healthy step up. Having said that, my iPad 3 has always seemed snappy enough to handle every app or game that I’ve ever thrown at it, so the extra performance on offer in the iPad Air isn’t noticeable most of the time.It does, however, give the iPad Air scope to flex its muscles with new games and apps in the future. I was somewhat flabbergasted when Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was released for the iPad a few months ago, so it’s mouth-watering to imagine what the iPad Air will be able to do with the extra performance provided by the A7 processor. One thing that Apple didn’t make a big fuss about was the battery life of the iPad Air – the company is merely commenting that the Air stays at around 10 hours. In fact, the iPad Air gave me a full 10 hours of streaming video using BBC iPlayer, compared to about eight for my iPad 3. You could probably squeeze another hour out of it if you’re not hammering the Wi-Fi non-stop.

One other minor change I also appreciated was the addition of twin-aerial MIMO for the iPad’s 802.11n Wi-Fi. One result: the iPad Air didn’t keep dropping the signal in the Wi-Fi deadspot in my office, as my iPad 3 does on a regular basis. It’s annoying, though, that Apple hasn’t upgraded the iPad’s Wi-Fi to 802.11ac as it has done with the latest Mac models. There’s no change to the 5MP rear camera or 1.2MP front camera, either, adding to the impression that Apple is holding back on a number of features for use in future upgrades. But at least it didn’t increase the price, so I suppose we should be grateful for small mercies. The 16GB Wi-Fi model still starts at £399, with the 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models priced at 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models priced at £479, £559 and £639. As before, the cellular models simply add £100 to those prices. Those prices have been fairly constant for a few years now, and by now I’d have expected the £399 model to provide 32GB of storage – which would allow me to cram my entire iTunes library onto it at last.

I’m also rather unimpressed to see that the iPad 2, which remains on sale as Apple’s "low-cost" option, still starts at £329 – £70 less than the Air. The iPad 2 is approaching its third birthday and its pre-Retina, 1024 x 768 display just isn’t up to scratch at that price. And, of course, there are those perennial little iPad niggles that we all like to complain about: the lack of built-in HDMI, USB or memory card slots, and the expensive adaptors that Apple sells to overcome the connectivity limitations that it imposed in the first place. Those limitations haven’t stopped Apple selling 170 million iPads so far, so they’re probably not going to make any difference this time either.Apple always likes to talk about the “magical” experience of using the iPad, and holding the iPad Air in my hands does remind me of what it was like when the very first iPad was launched. I can understand why the fanbois who already own the iPad 4 weren’t tempted to queue overnight to buy the iPad Air, but people like me who have an older iPad may well find the urge to upgrade hard to resist this Christmas.

The storage Tardis effect continues: Toshiba has crammed 1TB into a thin disk drive and signed a license to use DenseBits technology in its flash memory products. The Tardis is Doctor Who’s time-travelling telephone kiosk which is somehow larger inside than outside. So it is with storage disk and NAND products which are able to continually hold more and more data inside their small casings. On the disk front Toshiba has gone and designed a 7mm thick 2.5in disk drive storing 1TB on its two platters. This the MQ02ABF, PDF data sheet here, an updated version of the MQ01ABF, “01” meaning 1 x 500GB platter and “02” meaning 2 x 500GB platters. The areal density is 744Gbit/in2 and the little twin spinner spins at 5.400rpm with a 6Gbit/s SATA interface. It uses dual-stage head positioning technology to make track location and following more precise, and is available at 759GB and 1TB capacity points. It’s intended for use in Ultrabooks and similarly space-constrained applications.

The company has also signed a license to use DensBits technology. This Israeli startup has devised so-called Memory Modem technology and it’s being touted as good for making short-lived 3-layer cell (TLC) flash technology usable. The trouble with this stuff is that it dies after relatively few writes compared to MLC (2-layer cell) flash, meaning that it has been used so far only in USB sticks and camera flash cards - certainly not in enterprise flash applications. This Memory Modem (MOdulator DEModulator) technology somehow makes TLC longer-lived so it can, hopefully, be used in enterprise-class apps. Our expectation is that Toshiba is looking to it for help in producing TLC NAND for enterprises. Old telephone modem technology once enabled analogue telephone circuits to carry digital data. Presumably - a big presume - the Memory Modem enables a digital flash memory system to receive reliable data from the signals obtained from blocks of flash memory cells.

Dipping into the tinned quotes in the announcement release tells us little, though. Amir Tirosh, DensBits’ EVP for marketing and business development, says this:“Our proprietary Memory Modem controller technology combined with Toshiba’s industry leading Flash memory technology will allow the introduction of superior Flash storage solutions in terms of cost, reliability, and performance.”Sysadmin blog A common complaint about IT staff is their lack of social skills. As in any industry that attracts a certain type of person, there's a high percentage of dark-room-dwelling people who can sometimes struggle to communicate. This is either through what they say or how they interact with others. Not all IT people are like this of course, just as nurses are not all popping out of their skimpy outfits and pool cleaners don't universally have a mustache and manage to find themselves in many interesting and awkward situations.

There are some guidelines I can recommend based on many years of personal experience, as well as observing others.Helpdesk 101: Never trust the user. When a user tells you something is happening, see it for yourself. Think of this situation as if they just watched a doctor perform brain surgery, then had to summarise what happened. They're going to make guesses and assumptions on the bits they don't understand. Once you see the issue for yourself, then start the troubleshooting. There is no point spending hours chasing a dragon to slay if the dragon turns out to be a funny-shaped rock. Ask to see that error message or recreate the issue.Don't call them 'users': IT staff can often forget they're in a position of service. Nobody likes getting bad service; it doesn't matter if it's the 15-year-old at your local fast food restaurant or a rude doctor. This means respecting every person you deal with. "User" is a technical word and should not be used outside of technical circles - people want to feel like people. Generally I would recommend calling them "staff" for internal people, and "clients" for external people – a good guide is to use the same term as other departments with their communications.

Turn a "no" into an alternative solution: Everyone gets questions that should receive a negative answer, but when someone reaches out for help, that's the last thing they want to hear. "Can I plug in my personal laptop and use it at work?" usually comes under that category. The answer should be an alternative solution to their problem. Maybe they can do everything over the internet from that laptop, or they just need to get some files off, which could be done via USB storage.Often people will ask for something they think is the best solution to their problem, which means more questions need to be asked to find out what they are actually trying to accomplish.Good communication: Keep people updated. Let them know someone is working on their issue. Let everyone know of outages and resolutions by whatever notification method works the best. Check if people want more assistance, or to be left alone. Follow-ups should always be done; all users should be notified somehow that their issue or request has been addressed.

Adaptation: Some users want to know every intricate detail about their brand new laptop and how to use all the fancy new options. Others will want the laptop left on their desk without a word. Part of adaptation is reading people and asking the right questions, and the other half is leading them down the path that actually helps them more. You can't hassle that person who wants to be left alone, but if there's one important nugget of information, you need to get that across somehow. Just wiping your hands clean and walking away won't help: if they don't know their password was reset, they'll just get angry and think you're useless at your job. This might all sound like common sense to many, but it takes a lot of time to build up trust with your userbase, while only a few slip-ups can completely destroy it. You're there to assist the business, and that often doesn't align with an individual's particular request, but part of your job should be to keep both sides happy.

Apple, in common with virtually everyone else pushing systems, treats a gig as 1,000,000,000 bytes for users of Macs, iPhones and iPads; simpler for consumers, but the difference is almost seven per cent. When this relates to a disk holding, say, 3TB or 4TB the difference may not be significant. But when you have a mobile data plan for your smartphone, tablet or laptop, counting your bytes matters because the stakes are higher: a 3TB hard disk will set you back about 3p per gigabyte, whereas a phone network will charge much, much more. And it may not always be clear if a phone network defines a gigabyte as 10243 or 10003 bytes - even after you've diligently checked the small print and spoke to sales advisors. Then, even if you put arithmetic differences to one side, a fundamental problem remains - which, for mobile data plan subscribers, is the ability to see precisely how much data they have consumed within their monthly allowances.

Yes, there are tools available, some built into Android, iOS and other operating systems and others as downloadable apps - like that from Onavo - that try to measure your data usage. The trouble with nearly all of these is that they come with health warnings; that what they measure as usage may well differ from the view of the network carrier. How can this be? Well, besides the intended data usage - such as transferring a file, updating an app or watching a TV show - there is a transmission overhead associated with non-trivial communications, and mobile comms are no different. These extra bytes all add up and may not be counted by the software on your device.Today, the user, whether working for an enterprise or as a consumer, cannot always know exactly how much of their data allowance has been consumed. But the network carrier can tell, and often it is not in its self-interest to inform anyone.

Akku Fujitsu 60.4v70t.031 www.pcakku.com

Toshiba pa3191u-5brs Battery www.all-laptopbattery.com

If the HP folks in Palo Alto were hoping to see a chink in Lenovo's armour on its latest quarterly financials they will be sorely disappointed - a double-digit growth fest was banked by the Chinese dragon AGAIN today. The company has its portfolio limitations but it made the most of the sectors in which it operates to push up year-on-year revenues 13 per cent to $9.8bn, with pre-tax and net profit up 30 and 36 per cent respectively to $265m and $220m.It shipped 29 million devices in the quarter ended 30 September, which equates to: 315,217 devices a day; 13,134 an hour; 218 devices a minute; and 3.6 devices a second. In PCs, Lenovo said market doldrums were lifting, but despite this laptop shipments declined 12 per cent. The value of those sales was however eight per cent higher than a year ago at $5bn, or 51 per cent of total group turnoverThe opposite was true of desktops, where unit sales edged up one per cent but revenues decreased three per cent to $2.7bn.

Lenovo may be the largest PC maker on the planet - it is number one in five of the top largest PC consuming countries - but it was slabs and smartphone that fuelled most of the sales hike in the quarter. The Mobile Internet Digital Home which houses smartphone and tablets was up 106 per cent to $1.5bn as shipments expanded 78 per cent. Some 2.3 million tabs were flogged, up 4.2 times year over year with 77 per cent sales driven outside China. Smartphone shipments were up 78 per cent but Lenovo did not confirm the unit or revenue number. An ebullient Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing, boasted not only was his business perched at the summit of the PC industry but it had become the world's fourth biggest shifter of phones and slabs of the fondling variety. And he reckons the dark clouds are parting above the traditional computing markets, voicing some optimism.“Benefiting from corporate refresh and China market improvement, the PC market is recovering, and tablet growth continues shifting to mainstream and entry-level segments, as well as emerging markets, said Yanqing.

Lenovo may be moving beyond just PCs but it still lags established enterprise rivals, including those watchful peeps at HP, whose portfolio is much wider. This was a point magnified by a senior HP exec at last month's Canalys Channels Forum in Barcelona.Jos Brenkel, global senior veep of sales for Printers and Personal Systems (PPS), conceded Lenovo had done well in their sphere but accused the rival of renting market share by low-balling prices. What we've got that they don't have is sustainability in the corporate enterprise… I can sell a whole portfolio of products and I can leverage my whole sales force, he told El Chan.HP brought on board new PPS chief Dion Weisler in the summer and Brenkel said he is taking a more disciplined approach to the cost base that will enable HP to much more aggressive.HP's PC PPS biz in fiscal Q3 ended 31 July swelled 10.8 per cent to $7.7bn and operating profits crashed nearly 44 per cent to $228m.

Intel has set up an entire business unit to make sure that it doesn't miss out on the the whole internet of things movement. The chipmaker wants to make sure that it's not behind the curve on efforts to create a vast army of network-connected gadgets and sensors – ideally everything from remote-controllable toasters to your nose-hair trimmers. Thus, Chipzilla is building an entire division devoted to making money from the trend.[Chief exec Brian] Krzanich is saying, 'I want a higher level of focus on this to help us grow it and put the level of attention on it that it deserves', the new internet-of-things solutions group boss Doug Davis told Reuters.Although it's a whopping great big company with fingers in a lot of pies, like many other tech firms, Intel was a bit slow to pick up on the consumer switch to mobile and kept trying to push laptop tech such as its Ultrabooks. Since Krzanich came in as chief in May, the company has made building chips for portable devices a higher priority and it has started work on power-sipping microchips suitable for use in wearable devices including smartwatches. Review It’s true, as Rik Myslewski pointed out recently, that the two new MacBook Pro with Retina Display models aren’t drastically different from their predecessors. However, the eye-gasmic, 2880 x 1800 hi-res screen of the original 15-inch model helped it to win El Reg’s Laptop of the Year for 2012, so you could argue that it ain’t broke and it don’t need fixing.

The main difference between the previous 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro and this year’s update is simply that the 2013 model gains Intel’s new Haswell processor along with some housekeeping updates such as the inclusion of 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Thunderbolt 2.0 and a PCI Express (PCIe) interface for the solid-state storage. The external design is essentially unchanged and there’s still no denying that the screen remains its outstanding feature. The 15.4-inch IPS LCD panel may no longer be unique, but its resolution and 220 pixels per inch dot-density ensure that it remains one of the sharpest, brightest and most colourful displays I’ve ever seen on a laptop.By default, Mac OS X presents the screen as a 1440 x 900 panel, using extra pixels to smooth the image, a trick it pioneered with the iPhone 4 and, later, the iPad 3. Those devices have fixed screen resolutions, but the MacBook Pro lets you trade that higher image quality for greater screen space, with the screen running to an effective 3840 x 2400 resolution if you want the maximum amount of display real estate.

That 4K-plus resolution - it’s virtual; the image is, of course, scaled down to the screen’s native 2880 x 1800 resolution, not that that you’d notice - makes the display ideal for graphics and video-editing work, huge spreadsheets and programming IDEs. I liked the fact that I could have Apple’s website sitting comfortably on screen alongside Microsoft Word in order to check specs while writing this review. My one complaint here is that the glossy screen coating remains annoyingly reflective, causing distracting glare in broad daylight – as well as making it darn difficult to take photos of the screen. The laptop’s thickness and weight remain the same as before: 18mm and 2.02kg, respectively. But, to be fair, the MacBook Pro with Retina Display is still one of the lightest 15-inch notebooks currently available. I can pick it up with one hand, and I didn’t find the weight particularly troublesome when I slipped it into a shoulder bag and ventured down to my favourite Wi-Fi equipped watering hole.

I was also reminded of the laptop’s impressive build quality. The aluminium-backed screen panel feels very firm and rigid – no tittering at the back, please – but is just flexible enough to absorb the occasional bump when you’re carrying it around. Apple craftily runs a large cooling vent right along the back of the bottom half the maching, where it is hidden from sight by the hinge of the screen panel. That said, the MacBook Pro ran cool and quiet throughout all my tests. The downside of that elegant, minimalist design is that the MacBook Pro with Retina Display provides no scope whatsoever for upgrades. You can’t even get at the RAM slots, prompting the teardown team at iFixit to award the MacBook Pro just one out of ten for upgradeability.Video pros and storage nuts will perhaps appreciate the new pair of Thunderbolt 2.0 ports, which now provide maximum throughput of 20Gbps, but Thunderbolt drives remain very expensive, leaving the two USB 3.0 ports as the primary option for adding storage and connecting peripherals.

There’s no Ethernet interface either, so you’ll have to pay £25 for an optional Gigabit adaptor if you need a wired network connection. It connects to the Thunderbolt port, which keeps the two USB ports free for other things. TV fans will appreciate the HDMI port, however, and there’s the usual SD slot for folk with digital cameras. But that’s all business as usual for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display, so it’s the new Haswell processor that is the real focus of attention this time around. Prices now start at £1099 for the 13-inch model, which comes with a dual-core Haswell Core-i5 running at 2.4GHz, 4GB memory and 128GB of Flash storage. That’s down from the £1249 which Apple wanted for last year’s previous model, although that model’s Ivy Bridge chip ran at 2.6GHz.

The 15-inch model I have here gets a price cut too, down by £100 to a new starting price of £1699 with a quad-core Haswell i7-4750HQ running at 2.0GHz, 8GB memory and 256GB of flash storage. However, there’s more – or less – to that price cut than meets the eye. The clock speed this time around has been reduced from 2.4GHz to 2.0GHz, and the Nvidia GeForce GT 650M discrete graphics chip of last year’s model has been jettisoned altogether, leaving the machine to rely solely on the Haswell integrated graphics, an Iris Pro - aka GMA 5200 - in this case.SCC 2013 The new Commodity Track of the upcoming SC13 Student Cluster Competition has hit a chord with cluster competition aficionados worldwide and Register readers alike.I laid out the terms of this competition in a recent story, and plenty of you weighed in with recommendations on how these kids could get the most HPC bang out of their $2,500 bucks. These teams have a unique challenge. While the students in the Standard Track big iron competition design their own systems, they are limited by what their vendor hardware partners donate. But the kids who are competing in the Commodity track can do anything they want, as long as they spend less than $2,500 and stay under the generous 15 amp (120 volt) power cap.

One problem with covering this pre-competition phase of the event is that the specifics of the team configurations are confidential – no secret weapons can be revealed. Also, there’s quite a bit of variation between what the students think they’ll be bringing to the competition and what they actually show up with.As only sublimely confident undergraduates can do, my team decided last night to scrap the design we've been working for the whole summer and take a radical left-hand turn using hardware we don't actually own yet. It made me so proud! These five guys are mastering so much material and digging into technical specs in a way I'd never get if they were just taking a class.
With that, let’s take a closer look at the Commodity Track teams...
Bentley University is a small, business-oriented university founded in 1917. It’s located in Waltham, Massachusetts and, according to Wikipedia, is accessible via the MTBA 554 bus. The University of Massachusetts is also assisting in the design of the cluster and staffing the travel team.
