This MacBook Pro includes the Touch Bar (units that don’t have this feature tend to be cheaper) but it’s honestly not very useful. It’s great to look at, and that’s about it. Yes, it provides a quick way to scroll through lists and can also be useful if you’d like to scroll through a video, but it is limited by its size. The miniature content previews it displays are helpful but are so small that it’s often hard to tell tabs apart, even with just three or four open. Opening even more tabs renders each of them impossible to tap. Sadly, it’s just not very integral to the MacBook experience.

Finally, this laptop’s battery life is decent. Apple claims it can last for 10 hours on a single charge, and we saw close to that in our high-definition video loop test. Web browsing was decidedly less impressive at eight hours. These numbers aren’t terrible, but we’ve seen better.

These RTX Super cards are the same GPUs Nvidia launched in 2019 for desktop, now for gaming laptops. The RTX 2080 Super has 3,072 CUDA cores, while the RTX 2070 Super has 2,560 CUDA cores. Both represent a modest jump in cores from its predecessors.

Will this increase in performance make laptops cost more? Not according to Nvidia. The company says laptops with the new RTX Super cards will compare in price to the current RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 laptops. Nvidia did mention that RTX 2070-powered laptops will remain on the market, and could drop in price to as low as $1,200.

In terms of clock speeds and even TDP, it’ll depend wildly on the gaming laptop in question. On the top end, of course, the Super cards have the ability to clock much higher than the standard RTX 2080 and 2070.Some laptops announced with RTX 2070 Super and 2080 Super so far include the Razer Blade Advanced Model, Acer Predator Triton 500, and the Lenovo Legion 7i.

Nvidia’s lower-powered options are more affordable now, too. Laptops with the GTX 1650 now start as low as $699, while RTX 2060 laptops will now be priced starting at $999. That’s a few hundred dollars less than in the past.

In order to push toward thinner and lighter gaming laptops, Nvidia has developed a set of technologies and standards known as Max-Q. Nvidia is announcing new features for laptop manufacturers to implement under the banner of Max-Q.The first is Dynamic Boost. It’s a feature that allows the system to share power between the GPU and CPU. For example, many gaming laptops are capped at 115 watts, statically limiting the CPU to 35 watts, and the GPU to 80 watts. That might not be the ideal split for certain games or tasks. Nvidia pointed to the examples of The Witcher 3, which bottlenecks the graphics, and Grand Theft Auto V, which bottlenecks the processor.

Dynamic Boost instead adjusts this static limit to get the most out of every situation. To accomplish this, the feature uses telemetry to route power and dissipate thermals on a frame-by-frame basis. Nvidia says the result is somewhere between a 4% and 10% increase in frame rates. It doesn’t require developers to create a profile, which means it will work in current games without a patch, and it can be toggled off in the Nvidia Control Panel.

A couple of significant upgrades of the MacBook Air are its Magic Keyboard and Touch ID. The Magic Keyboard is responsive, clicky, and features a full millimeter of travel. It’s a delight to type on, quite reminiscent of the much-beloved MacBooks sold prior to the 2016 MacBook Pro redesign that introduced the butterfly switch keyboards. The Touch ID fingerprint sensor, on the other hand, is located on the top right of the function row, and doubles as a power button. It works extremely well, although we think Face login, which works so well on iOS devices, needs to be brought to Mac. Finally, the MacBook Air can last up to nine and a half hours with light web browsing, 10 hours with continuous video playback, and three hours when using heavier applications.

This laptop’s 13-inch FHD 1,920 x 1,080 non-touch display (the 4K touchscreen version will set you back by $300, and is a power hog) bursts with sumptuous colors, deep contrasts, and an incredible amount of detail. It also gets astonishingly bright, averaging 375 nits. Just like the display, the side-firing speakers are excellent. Finicky typists should be warned that the layout is still on the small side but with a typing experience this comfortable, who cares? Armed with an 8th-gen Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB of RAM, this laptop provides incredibly smooth and lightning-fast performance without any hint of lag. And with its 128GB PCIe SSD, transferring files is far from sluggish. However, its Intel UHD 620 Graphics GPU isn’t equipped to process graphically taxing games such as Battlefield V and Destiny 2. It will perform much better with older titles with less demanding graphics. In terms of battery life, as we’ve mentioned, we recommend you skip the 4K touchscreen model if you want the most endurance. In our continuous web surfing test, this unit was able to last over 12 hours.

The Dell XPS 13 is thin, fast, and long-lasting, making it our favorite ultraportable thus far. And now that the nosecam, the one thing that marred the previous model, has finally met its demise, it’s practically perfect. Get it for $715 – a huge $304 less than its normal retail price of $1019 – on Dell’s official website.

The 14-inch display with 1,366 x 768 resolution isn’t the most optimal for viewing images or videos at their peak quality. The AMD Radeon R4 graphics chipset doesn’t do the IdeaPad 1 any favors, either. Regardless, it gets the job done for regular work that doesn’t involve visual output like documentation and project management. In terms of overall horsepower, the IdeaPad 1 comes with a dual-core AMD A6-9220e processor and 4GB of RAM. What you can do with the laptop is limited by this as it can’t handle too many tasks simultaneously, but for lightweight work and simple tasks that aren’t too intensive, the IdeaPad 1 will do just fine.

If you’ll be listening to music, you’ll be glad to know that the built-in Dolby Audio dual-stereo speaker also provides decent sound quality. The laptop’s biggest and most apparent weakness is its incredibly small 64GB eMMC flash memory, which can’t hold a candle to an average SSD. This means that if you’ll be using the laptop for a while, you’ll need to invest in a storage upgrade. Purchase the laptop now and you also get a freebie. For those without Microsoft Office 365, the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 offers a free year-long Personal subscription, so you can get what is arguably the best office software on the market for no cost whatsoever. You can find the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 laptop on Best Buy where it’s currently on sale for only $180.

If you need something a little more powerful than the Lenovo IdeaPad 1, the Dell Inspiron 15.6 may be the ticket. With a stylish black exterior that doesn’t compromise utility for looks, the Inspiron is a balanced laptop that’s suitable for most office tasks. It weighs a bit more than the IdeaPad 1 at around 4.4 pounds, but the difference is honestly negligible. You can comfortably take this laptop wherever you go and look good doing it.

The Dell Inspiron 15.6 has a 15.6-inch touchscreen display with 1,366 x 768 resolution that — although it isn’t a huge step up from the IdeaPad — still does its job decently well. Plus, the touchscreen allows for greater accessibility and can be surprisingly convenient if you don’t have a mouse or can’t be bothered to use a trackpad. With the built-in Intel UHD Graphics 620, it won’t be able to handle intensive image or video processing, but it’s decent for basic tasks such as photo editing or note-taking. The eighth-generation Intel Core i3 processor isn’t as powerful as its i5 and i7 variants, but it’s still a definite upgrade from the IdeaPad’s AMD A6-9220e, with greater memory bandwidth and a marginally better operating frequency. The 8GB of RAM also allows you to handle multiple applications with relative ease.

Thin bezels and small footprints have always been a part of the XPS DNA, but when you apply them to a laptop with a 17-inch screen, it’s even more noticeable. Despite its larger screen, the XPS 17 is only a hair bigger than the MacBook Pro. The footprint of each is almost identical, with the only noticeable difference being an extra 0.65 inches in width for the Dell. That’s the strength of the XPS 17’s thin bezel design.

The XPS 17 matches other important design changes made to recent XPS 15 and 13 models: A 16:10 display aspect ratio, a large touchpad, upward-facing speakers, and four Thunderbolt 3 ports. These enhancements help the XPS 17 match or exceed the MacBook Pro 16 in multiple areas. Dell doesn’t want to give away any advantage to Apple.

The lead designer on the XPS team, Nick DiLoreto, described why a laptop exactly like this was what he’s always wanted. “There’s a whole group of creative people like myself who are always looking for the biggest screen,” he told me. “When I’m in Taiwan or whatever, I don’t have access to my 38-inch monitor, but I still have to do the same types of tasks. To have that screen is really helpful for people like me.”

The XPS team seems confident about the next era of laptops. Its lineup has never been more unified, and the inclusion of a larger, more powerful XPS laptop is an exciting next step. Dell expects the XPS 17 to cut into sales of 15-inch laptops, and possibly even its own XPS 15.

“If this product is going to be successful, it’s gonna eat a bunch of 15-inch products,” said Oliphant. “Competitors, and maybe even some of ours. But we think this is gonna be groundbreaking.”

That doesn’t mean Dell is ready to forgo a 15-inch laptop, as Apple did. Dell has no plans to slow down or ax current models. Oliphant says the future holds more iterations and updates, not less.

“We won’t let our product line get as long in the tooth as this one,” he said, pointing to the previous version of the XPS 15. “You’re going to see us refresh these products a little more frequently. We’re not going to go crazy and do something new every year, but we’ve proved to ourselves that five years on this chassis was probably one to two years too long.”

He also pointed toward a big shift in technology that could happen in the future. He referenced everything from the architectural revolution of big core/small core chip design to ultrathin mechanical keyboards.

“I’ve fell many more times than I’ve succeeded,” Oliphant told me. “Go back to the Adamo days. Neither of those products were successful. But if we hadn’t done those products, we wouldn’t be where we are today with these products. Everybody’s gonna make mistakes. The smart ones learn from them.”

Simple and clean, the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 laptop is a great entry-level option for working professionals constantly on the move. The XPS 17’s most impressive performance advantage almost didn’t make it to the final product.

Limited thermal headroom is a problem for laptops in this class. They’re forced to walk a tightrope between heat, noise, performance, and size. The worst example is the 2018 MacBook Pro 15, which infamously throttled the Core i9 so hard it sometimes fell short against the Core i7 model. It was, in a word, a disaster.

According to Oliphant, that’s why the RTX 2060 wasn’t always in the XPS 17’s plans. Simply bringing the thermal solution in the XPS 15 to a larger chassis wouldn’t leave enough headroom for Nvidia’s beefy, 60-watt graphics card. Then, halfway through the development cycle, the team’s engineers hit a breakthrough.

“About six months ago, when we were in the middle of this development cycle, our TDP (thermal design power) for this product was about 70 or 75 watts. Our engineering guys, the thermal and mechanical engineers and architects, developed and incubated a new thermal technique which basically took this product from the mid-70s up to the 90s. We had to change the fans and enclosures a little bit, but no other structural changes to the product. Just through some incubation and innovation on the thermal side, we’re able to give you an extra 30% of TDP.”

This was a breakthrough. Without it, the Dell XPS 17 wouldn’t be “ready for VR,” it wouldn’t have the RTX 2060, and its gains over the XPS 15 would far less impressive. The XPS 17 was well on its way to being another 17-inch laptop serving up a larger display — and not much else.

Dell didn’t offer a specific figure for the boost the new thermal system brings, but more power means the system is able to run higher clock cycles and more efficiently push heat off the system.

The new thermals include a vapor chamber that covers the graphics card and acts as a large heat sink to absorb that hot air. Many gaming laptops use this type of cooling over traditional heat pipes, however. The real breakthrough can be found in the fans.

The impeller is now much larger, filling 90% of the housing with whirling fan blades. Combined with some careful airflow tricks within the chassis of the laptop, this thermal solution can move far more air and exhaust more heat. It sounds simple, but creating a practical, durable fan design capable of such airflow took months of work, and Dell thinks it’ll prove to be a game-changer.

“There’s a ton of different forces pulling us in different directions when we talk about thermal capabilities for these products. I could add some big-ass feet on this thing and drive the thermals up even further. But we want table height when we’re sitting on the table next to our competitors. These aren’t gaming boxes. They’re performance boxes, but they’re premium performance boxes. It’s a delicate balance on what we do to make these things beautiful, but then also make them effective in what their jobs are supposed to be.”

The XPS 17 might not have a clear rival from its Windows competitors, but it does have a clear target. The MacBook Pro 16. It’s a laptop that won much favor for Apple, especially from creative professionals. The XPS 17 has its work cut out for it if Dell hopes to win this “creator” demographic.

“When you look at all the focus on creators right now, a lot of it is marketing,” said Oliphant. “It’s not like there’s been some magical university of creation that has just started people who want to create things. There have always been creators out there. But people have started to market to those people very effectively.”

This is, of course, something Apple has been doing for decades. Apple has always sold itself as the brand for creatives — whether for hobbyists or professionals. The 16-inch MacBook Pro epitomizes this approach as a large and powerful laptop meant for this exact demographic. The 17-inch MacBook Pro was canceled long ago, but the 16-inch feels like its spiritual successor.

The shadow of Apple’s laptop hung over all our conversations at XPS labs. A MacBook sat on the table as we talked about the potential of the XPS 17.

“We didn’t know the MacBook Pro was coming as a 16-inch,” Oliphant told me. “It just happened to perfectly fit right in between our products. Now, we have a sandwich strategy where if you want something lighter and as powerful, you buy this product. If you want something significantly more powerful and probably about the same size, you get the 17.”

Windows-Nutzer haben in Zukunft die Möglichkeit, Updates für mehrere Tage zu pausieren. Bisher war die Option Nutzern von Windows 10 Pro vorbehalten. Das berichtet "chip.de". Alle anderen müssen Tricks anwenden, um automatische Updates auf Windows 10 zu stoppen.

Zukünftig können Nutzer über die Windows-Suche alle Ordner und Festplatten durchsuchen statt nur Dokumente, Bilder, Videos und den Desktop – wie es Standardmäßig eingestellt ist. Dafür müssen Nutzer alle Daten auf ihren Rechner indexieren lassen. Laut Microsoft soll das um die 15 Minuten dauern. Allerdings hängt das auch von der Zahl der Daten ab.

Zudem verspricht Microsoft diverse Änderungen und Verbesserungen bei bestimmten Sprachen. Beispielsweise soll es verbesserte Eingabemethoden für japanisch oder vietnamesisch geben. Auch das Symbol für eine getrennte Internetverbindung soll erneuert werden: Sie zeigt in der neuen Windows-Version eine Weltkugel mit einem durchgestrichenen Kreis rechts unten. Zudem erwarten Nutzer eine Reihe neuer Emojis.

Dazu muss man keine Kamera zücken: Windows bietet seit vielen Jahren das "Snipping Tool", mit dem sich sogenannte Screenshots anfertigen lassen. Tatsächlich ist Edge deutlich schneller und sicherer als der Internet Explorer. Auch wirbt Microsoft, dass Edge schneller als Chrome sein soll.

So werden die Icons für Word, Excel, PowerPoint und Co. durch ein modernes Design ersetzt.Im Zuge dessen plant Microsoft wohl auch neue Symbole für Windows 10. Das berichtet die Seite "Thurrot.com". In einem Beitrag auf "Medium.com" eines Microsoft-Mangers zu den neuen Icons für Office finden sich ein Video und ein Bild mit einem Windows-10-Desktop. Dort sind neue Symbole für verschieden Apps zu sehen (im Video ab Minute 00:42).

Beispielsweise zeigen sich Apps wie Kalender, Explorer, E-Mail und Taschenrechner in einem neuen Design. Sie ähneln vom Stil den neuen Office-Symbolen. Die Windows-Icons im Foto zeigen aber vermutlich Entwürfe oder Beispielbilder und nicht das finale Design.

Eine Antwort von Microsoft-Manager Jon Friedmann im Kommentarbereich zum Artikel nährt ebenfalls die Gerüchte. Er sagt auf Anfrage eines Nutzers zum neuen Design: "Jetzt, wo wir das System (mit den neuen Icons, d. Red.) etabliert haben, beginnen wir, es auf ganz Microsoft anzupassen."

Verschiedene Medien vermuten, dass die neuen Symbole bereits im kommenden April-Update für Windows 10 zu sehen sein werden. Microsoft aktualisierte die Symbole für Office zuletzt 2013. Auch in der Systemsteuerung von Windows 10 finden sich Icons aus älteren Windows-Versionen.

Teilweise gab es bereits private Bemühungen, neue Symbole für veraltete Icons in verschiedenen Bereichen zu finden. Beispielsweise startete die "Wirtschaftsförderung Region Stuttgart" 2014 einen Wettbewerb, in dem Teilnehmer ein Ersatzsymbol für "Speichern unter" erstellen konnten. Das zeigt bei manchen Programmen nämlich noch eine Diskette.

Nach langem Hin und Her hat Microsoft das Oktober-2018-Update für Windows Anfang November wieder veröffentlicht. Probleme mit der Version hatten den Konzern gezwungen, die neue Version im Oktober zurückzuziehen.

Im Action Center finden sich aktuelle Benachrichtigungen zum Betriebssystem. Außerdem können Nutzer mit einem Klick bestimmte Einstellungen aktivieren, wie beispielsweise den Flugzeug- oder Stromspar-Modus. Um das Action Center zu öffnen, drücken Sie "Windows-Taste" und "A".

Die Bildschirmhelligkeit lässt sich ebenfalls im Action Center ändern. Bisher allerdings nur in 25-Prozent-Schritten. In der neuen Windows-Version präsentiert Microsoft stattdessen einen Schieberegler. Außerdem lassen sich die Einstellungen zum Action Center auch direkt im Menü anpassen. Bisher mussten Nutzer dafür die Windows-Einstellungen öffnen.

Im letzten Windows-Update erlaubte Microsoft den Dark Mode auch für den Explorer. Nun soll ein Light Theme, ein heller Modus, folgen. Das berichten verschiedene Medien, darunter "Chip.de". In dem Modus werden unter anderem Farben für das Action Center, das Startmenü und die Taskleiste heller dargestellt.

Mehr vorinstallierte Apps sind löschbar

Windows 10 kommt mit einigen vorinstallierten Programm, die Nutzer höchstens deaktivieren, aber nicht löschen können. In der kommenden Windows-10-Version sollen Nutzer folgende Apps ebenfalls deinstallieren können:

Microsoft präsentierte vor Kurzem neue Symbole für sein Office-Paket. So werden die Icons für Word, Excel, PowerPoint und Co. durch ein modernes Design ersetzt.Im Zuge dessen plant Microsoft wohl auch neue Symbole für Windows 10. Das berichtet die Seite "Thurrot.com". In der Vision von Engelbart sollten Symbole auf dem Bildschirm erscheinen, die man mit einem Zeiger ansteuern und aktivieren kann. 1962 veröffentlichte der ehemalige Navy-Radartechniker am Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in Menlo Park ein wissenschaftliches Papier unter dem Titel "Augmenting the Human Intellect: A conceptual framework" (Erweiterung des menschlichen Intellekts: Ein Grundkonzept).

Zwei Jahre später baute Engelbart zusammen mit seinem Chefingenieur Bill English den ersten Maus-Prototypen. Diese Originalmaus, die in einem Holzgehäuse untergebracht war, enthielt ein Rad, das die Bewegung des Gerätes in Cursorbewegungen auf dem Bildschirm umsetzte. Ein Mitarbeiter in Engelbarts Labor meinte, das Holzkästchen sehe mit der roten Taste oben und dem Kabel hinten wie eine Maus. Der Name blieb hängen.

Es dauerte dann bis zum 9. Dezember 1968, bis Engelbart das Konzept der Öffentlichkeit vorstellte. Die 90-minütige Live-Präsentation auf der "Fall Joint Conference", die in einem Video für die Nachwelt erhalten geblieben ist, ging als "Mutter aller Demos" in die Geschichte ein.

Auch Deutschland arbeitete an Computermaus-Konzept

Engelbart führte damals den Einsatz einer Maus vor, die auf einem Bildschirm einen schwarzen Punkt bewegte. "In unserer Vision gingen wir davon aus, dass die Menschen zur Lösung von Problemen computergestützte Arbeitsstationen einsetzen werden", sagte Engelbart 30 Jahre später in einem Interview. "Diese Stationen setzten voraus, dass man mit Hilfe eines Geräts einen Cursor und damit die Informationen auf dem Bildschirm ansteuern konnte." Er habe damals im Auftrag der Weltraumorganisation Nasa verschiedene Geräte ausprobiert, darunter einen Lichtgriffel und auch Joysticks. "Es stellte sich schnell heraus, dass die Maus besser als alle anderen Geräte funktionierte."

Um solche Software loszuwerden, hilft ein Blick in die Systemeinstellungen. Unter "Programme hinzufügen oder entfernen" lässt sich unerwünschte Software aufspüren und entfernen. Wer es nicht selbst erledigen will, kann Programme wie den kostenlosen Bulk Crap Uninstaller nutzen. Die Werbekacheln im Startmenü von Windows 10 entfernen Anwender am besten per Rechtsklick und dann über "Von Start lösen" oder "Deinstallieren".

Aber nicht nur auf neuen Computern können ungeahnte Software-Dreingaben warten. Auch viele häufig benutzte Freeware-Programme kommen mittlerweile mit Werbesoftware, wenn man bei der Installation nicht genau aufpasst. Für die eigentlichen Funktionen sind die Dreingaben nicht nötig. Etwa beim nach wie vor verbreiteten Flash-Player, der bei der Installation gleich eine Virenschutz-Toolbar installieren möchte. Oder das Anzeigeprogramm für PDF-Dateien Foxit-Reader. Hier heißt es: aufmerksam sein. Bei der Installation lässt sich solche Zusatzsoftware häufig durch das Entfernen eines gesetzten Häkchens abwählen.

Wer einfach Apps entfernen will, sollte sich die App "10AppsManager", wie "Chip" (9/2018) berichtet. Die Freeware zeigt eine Übersicht aller Apps an und ermöglicht die Deinstallation mit wenigen Klicks.

Die Anwendung von "10AppsManager" lohnt auch nach größeren Windows-Updates, bei denen auch mal ungefragt neue Programme installiert werden können. Nach Updates sollten Nutzer auch die Speicherbereinigungsoptionen von Windows aufrufen, zu finden unter Start/Einstellungen/System/Speicher. Hier auf "Jetzt Speicherplatz freigeben" klicken und dann noch auswählen, was in den digitalen Müll darf. Wer hier auch ältere Windows-Installationen entfernt, kann richtig viel Festplattenplatz zurückgewinnen.

Microsoft plant offenbar, seinen Internet-Browser Edge zu ersetzen. Derzeit soll der Konzern an einem neuen Browser für Windows 10 arbeiten. Der Projektname lautet: "Anaheim". Das berichtet die Seite "Windows Central" mit Berufung auf Insider-Quellen.

Über den neuen Windows-10-Browser sind noch keine Einzelheiten bekannt. Microsoft hat sich zu den Gerüchten nicht geäußert. Laut "Windows Central" soll der neue Browser auf Chromium basieren. Dabei handelt es sich um einen Teil von Googles Browser Chrome. Der Konzern hat einen großen Teil des Codes als Open-Source-Projekt veröffentlicht. Das heißt, dass jeder Nutzer darauf zugreifen darf.

I visited Dell’s labs and spoke with its design team to see how the XPS hopes to make 17-inch laptops relevant again.

The XPS team has led laptop design for years. Its push toward thinner bezels started in 2015, and Dell’s competitors have been playing catch-up ever since.

The XPS 17 is about more than just bezels. The dream behind the creation of the XPS 17 has always been one of power. Yes, Dell has the XPS 15, a popular choice for workstation-like performance in a sleek build. But the XPS team wanted more.

According to Oliphant, the true origin for an all-powerful XPS 17 came from another innovator at the company, Frank Azor. The longtime head of both XPS and Alienware departed Dell last year for an executive role at AMD; the XPS 17 is his last conceptual contribution to Dell.

“This is a little tongue-in-cheek, but 17 exists because Frank Azor wanted a much larger, more powerful, and capable XPS notebook. That’s the short answer,” said Oliphant with a laugh. “We also looked at that space, and knowing what we could do putting a 17 in a 15-inch form factor — 17-inch was this missing guardrail that we didn’t have.”

A few competitors do offer 17-inch laptops today. Examples include the HP Envy 17, the LG Gram 17, and niche workstation laptops like the HP ZBook 17 G5. But when Oliphant speaks about “missing guardrails,” he’s talking about more than just an empty slot in the product portfolio.

“We look for opportunities to lead in existing categories, but we also look for ways to create new categories,” Oliphant told me. “Seventeen-inch is an uber, uber small market. Well, 17-inch today are big, 8-pound gargantuan products. What if we did a sexy, sleek, slim 17-inch that is about the same size as most 15-inches? That’s kind of a new product category from my perspective. We put a twist on 17-inch that nobody else has.”

What’s the big twist? It goes back to Azor’s initial concept for the XPS 17. He wanted to build the most powerful XPS laptop ever — and a meaningful step up from the already powerful XPS 15 — without losing the sleek profile Dell’s XPS laptops are now known for.

Unprecedented power

There’s a problem inherent in trying to sell the XPS 17 on more power. The XPS 15 already exists, and it’s incredible. Its most recent update offers the best Intel mobile processors available to consumers. A Dell XPS 15 with the 8-core, 16-thread Intel Core i9 can tear through 4K video edits. Since Intel doesn’t have anything new up its sleeve, Dell was left to its own devices to crank up the performance.

The XPS engineering team turned to the next logical bottleneck: graphics. The XPS 17 can be configured with the Nvidia RTX 2060 with 6GB of VRAM. It’s a first for XPS, and it’s one of the few laptops under 5 pounds to offer it.

“We’re giving the RTX 2060 all 60 watts that it needs. We’ll play games with power share between CPU and GPU,” said Oliphant. “We’re not a gaming device, so we typically don’t run both components 100% concurrently. On this particular product, though, we felt like we had the ability to give the graphics all that we could and still not shortchange the CPU too much.”

For visuals, HP gave this laptop a 15.6-inch touchscreen with an impressive HD resolution of 1,366 x 768. This pixel density is not the best but it is enough to display content with crisp details and vibrant colors. The other key component when considering portability is battery life. There is no point heading out for a day on the road if your laptop is only going to last a couple hours, after all.

Apple claims the MacBook Pro 13 will give you up to 10 hours of wireless web browsing and 10 hours of Apple TV app movie playback, while it says the MacBook Pro 16 offers up to 11 hours for both. That is partly due to the much larger battery in the bigger laptop — the MacBook Pro 16 comes with a 100-watt-hour battery (the biggest allowed by the FAA), compared to the 58-watt-hour or 58.2-watt-hour battery (depending on the model) in the smaller MacBook Pro.

In practice, however, we found the MacBook Pro 16 did not live up to Apple’s claims, only lasting around five and a half hours during an average workload, which included “dozens of tabs, streaming music in Spotify, and Slack.” The 13-inch is in the same range of battery life, averaging around six hours in a similar workload.

With all this power at its disposal, it should come as no surprise that the MacBook Pro 16 is, on the face of it, a lot more expensive than the MacBook Pro 13. The smaller MacBook Pro starts at $1,299, while even the most affordable MacBook Pro 16 will set you back a whopping $2,399 — over $1,000 more.

However, it is not an open and shut case. If you buy the $1,299 MacBook Pro 13 — or even the upgraded $1,499 model — you will find yourself stuck on an outdated 8th-generation Intel processor and slower RAM. If you want more up-to-date components, you will have to pay at least $1,799. Suddenly, the difference in price is not so great.

That extra $600 buys a much more powerful computer, though you’ll need to pay an extra grand for the Core i9. It is the absolute best choice if you must do demanding work, and if that sounds like you, you might just have to bite the bullet and go for it. That’s especially true if you need the extra graphical capability such as for 3D modeling or gaming. You also get a few other nice benefits with the MacBook Pro 16. You get the redesigned thermal system, meaning your processor will get throttled less often and your device will run cooler. You get a larger display with much thinner bezels, giving you a more immersive, enjoyable visual experience. And you get incredible speakers that are, quite simply, the best on any laptop, period.

If your workflow is more focused on heavy multitasking and lighter applications, the MacBook Pro 13-inch will do you just fine. It can even handle some lighter content creation like programming or photography.

When comparing the MacBook Pro 13 and the MacBook Pro 16, picking a winner largely depends on your current situation and the type of work you expect to do. If you do not need anything particularly powerful, saving yourself some money and getting the MacBook Pro 13 (or even the MacBook Air) would be your best bet.

If time is not of the essence, that might be your best choice.

HP laptops may not always steal the show, but the brand’s continuous improvement of its hardware makes them a great alternative to some of the pricey units from big companies like Apple or Dell. This model, specifically, comes with a powerful eighth-generation Intel Core i7 processor that enables a buttery smooth computing performance. It can zip through multiple tasks, and backed by 8GB of RAM, it delivers the extra boost needed for fluid multitasking.

Fast in Vergessenheit geraten ist, dass in dieser Zeit auch in Deutschland an dem Konzept einer Computermaus gearbeitet wurde. Für die Bundesanstalt für Flugsicherung (BFS) in Frankfurt entwickelte eine Abteilung des Elektro-Pioniers Telefunken in Konstanz ein System, in dem ein Zeiger benötigt wurde. Eine "Rollkugelsteuerung" sollte den Fluglotsen ermöglichen, auf einem großen Radar-Bildschirm Darstellungen von Flugzeugpositionen zu markieren. Einige Wochen vor der Demo in San Francisco stellte Telefunken sein Konzept vor.

Engelbart hatte die Idee also nicht allein. Doch im Gegensatz zu den Deutschen ließ sich sein Arbeitgeber SRI die Erfindung 1970 als "X-Y-Positionsanzeigesteuerung für die Bewegung per Hand über eine beliebige Oberfläche zur Verschiebung eines Positionsanzeigers auf dem Bildschirm" unter der Nummer 3,541,541 als Patent eintragen.

Einen Erfolg im Massenmarkt konnten damals aber weder Telefunken noch das Team in Kalifornien feiern. Engebarts Auftraggeber Nasa konnte mit der ersten Maus nicht viel anfangen, auch weil bald deutlich wurde, dass seine Maus in der Schwerelosigkeit nicht angewandt werden konnte. Und Telefunken baute die "Rollkugelsteuerung" zwar in seinen Großrechner TR440 ein, doch diese Computerschränke bekam kaum jemand zu Gesicht. Die Großrechner kosteten bis zu 15 Millionen D-Mark und wurden in geringen Stückzahlen von der Bundesanstalt für Flugsicherung und anderen Behörden verwendet.

Das Konzept der Computermaus verschwand für einige Jahre wieder in der Versenkung, wurde dann vom legendären kalifornischen Forschungszentrum Xerox Parc aufgegriffen, wo auch eine grafische Benutzungsoberfläche für den Computer Xerox Alto entwickelt wurde. Aber auch dieser Rechner war für ein Massenpublikum viel zu teuer. Apple-Mitgründer Steve Jobs sah den Alto 1979 und übernahm das Konzept der grafischen Bedienoberfläche. Apples "Lisa" war der erste Computer, der für die Maus ausgelegt war. Mit dem Macintosh erreichte die Maus 1984 dann den Durchbruch. Dieser Erfolg beeindruckte wiederum Microsoft-Mitbegründer Bill Gates so sehr, dass er sich von der Kommandozeile von MS-DOS verabschiedete und nach dem Vorbild des Apple Macintosh dann Maus und Icon als Standard bei Windows einführte.

Von Kugel zur Laserdiode

Die von Engelbart entwickelte Computermaus hat mit den heutigen Mäusen nur wenig gemeinsam. Der erste Maus-Prototyp besaß anstelle einer Kugel ein Rad für die Cursorbewegungen. In den siebziger Jahren passte der Schweizer Jean-Daniel Nicoud das Konzept an, indem er die Regelwiderstände in Engelbarts Maus durch optische Messgeber ersetzte – und damit auch den Grundstein für den unternehmerischen Erfolg der Firma Logitech legte. Heutige Computermäuse funktionieren zumeist mit Laserdioden, die auf Infrarot-Technik basieren.

Als Eingabeinstrument wird die Maus aber inzwischen vom menschlichen Finger überholt. Auf Milliarden von Smartphones und Tabletcomputern wird ohne Maus gewischt und getippt. Und in Zukunft könnte die menschliche Sprache wiederum zur populärsten Dialogmethode zwischen Mensch und Maschine werden.

Microsoft wird seinen Webbrowser Edge künftig auf Basis von Technologie des Rivalen Google betreiben – und will ihn erstmals auch auf Apples Mac-Computer und Rechner mit älteren Windows-Versionen bringen.Der Software-Konzern bestätigte in der Nacht zum Freitag, dass Edge künftig mit der Web-Engine Chromium laufen werde, die Software-Entwicklern zur freien Verfügung steht. Das hatte vor einigen Tagen bereits das Technologie-Blog "Windows Central" berichtet.

Und Microsofts Umstieg könne diesen Trend noch verstärken, warnte der Entwickler des konkurrierenden Browsers Firefox, Mozilla. "Microsoft überlässt Google noch mehr Kontrolle über das Online-Leben", kritisierte Mozilla-Chef Chris Beard. Vom geschäftlichen Standpunkt sei es zwar verständlich, dass Microsoft das Handtuch bei seiner EdgeHTML-Technologie wirft. Aber es sei "schrecklich", wenn ein Unternehmen fundamentale Online-Infrastruktur im Griff habe. Der Firefox-Browser kam zuletzt laut Statcounter auf einen Marktanteil von rund fünf Prozent.

Microsoft hatte einst selbst die dominierende Position bei Webbrowsern mit dem Internet Explorer. Sie wurde aufgebrochen als zunächst Firefox und dann Googles Chrome auf den Markt kamen – und Apples Safari-Browser einen großen Anteil der Web-Nutzung auf iPhone und Mac übernahm.

Neue Computer kommen häufig mit unerwünschter Werbesoftware und anderen unnützen Dreingaben daher. Diese entfernen Nutzer am besten sofort bei der Einrichtung, rät die Fachzeitschrift "Chip" (01/2019). Als Beispiele nennen die Experten etwa zusätzliche Werkzeugleisten (Toolbars) für den Browser oder Programme, die Werbung einblenden. Aber auch Microsoft packt in Windows 10 selbsttätig Werbung für Software in das Startmenü. Andere Beispiele sind vorinstallierte Testversionen von Virenscannern oder Officepaketen, die nach kurzer Zeit kostenpflichtig werden.

Das Update mit der kryptischen Bezeichnung "KB4467682" (OS Build 17134.441) ist laut einem Bericht von "appdated.de" so fehlerhaft, dass es wieder zurückgezogen werden musste. Seit Oktober gibt es mit verschiedenen Neuerungen und Updates von Windows 10 immer wieder Probleme.

Bei einigen Computern traten nach dem Update ein schwarzer oder blauer Screen ("Blue Screen of Death") auf, was bei einem Absturz der Fall ist.

Andere Berichte sprechen von starken Veränderungen im Startmenü von Windows. Auch von Datenbankfehlern mit dem ".NET Framework" und Fehlern in der Suche des Mediaplayers war die Rede.

"Nach der Installation dieses optionalen Updates haben einige Benutzer gemeldet, dass ein blauer oder schwarzer Bildschirm mit der Fehlermeldung "System thread exception not handled" angezeigt wird. Aus Sicherheitsgründen haben wir dieses optionale Update aus Windows Update und Microsofts Update Katalog entfernt, um Kunden zu schützen. Korrekturen und Verbesserungen werden in der Sicherheitsupdateversion vom Dezember 2018 verfügbar sein und eine Lösung für dieses Problem enthalten."

Wechselt das Tastaturlayout auf eine andere Sprache. Auf deutschen Tastaturen heißt das im Normalfall, dass auf englische Tastatur umgestellt wird. So werden beispielsweise die Buchstaben z und y vertauscht. Auch Umlaute gibt es nicht mehr. Klappt unter Windows 7. Um das deutsche Layout wiederherzustellen, drücken Sie wieder Alt + Umschalt.

Wechselt das Tastaturlayout unter Windows 10. Allerdings muss dafür ein zweites Sprachpaket auf dem Rechner installiert sind. Ansonsten passiert nichts.Wenn Sie diese drei Tasten gleichzeitig drücken, dreht sich der Bildschirm. Beispielsweise 90 Grad nach rechts beim Drücken von Strg + Alt + Pfeiltaste rechts. Wenn Sie den Bildschirm wieder auf die normale Ansicht drehen wollen, drücken Sie Strg + Alt + Pfeiltaste oben. Klappt unter Windows 10 und 7.

Falls es nicht funktioniert, drücken Sie Strg + Pfeiltaste oder Strg + Umschalt + Pfeiltaste. Ob diese Tastenkombination klappt, hängt auch von Ihrem Grafikkartenanbieter ab.In Office-Programmen startet die Taste den Überschreibenmodus. Das heißt, dass alle Zeichen rechts vom Cursor ersetzt werden. Im Normalfall wird beim Schreiben neuer Text eingefügt. Um den Überschreibenmodus zu deaktivieren, klicken Sie wieder auf "Einfg". Das Auditorium der Brooks Hall in der Innenstadt von San Francisco ist schon seit 1993 geschlossen. Nichts erinnert daran, dass hier vor 50 Jahren ein Meilenstein in der Computer-Geschichte gesetzt wurde. Lange bevor der erste Personal Computer auf den Markt kam, demonstrierte am 9. Dezember 1968 der Tüftler Douglas C. Engelbart erstmals eine Computermaus. Es gingen dann aber noch über zehn Jahre ins Land, bevor die Maus mit dem Apple Macintosh für ein Massenpublikum verfügbar wurde.

Engelbart hatte sich vor der großen Präsentation vor über 1.000 Computerexperten in San Francisco jahrelang mit dem Entwurf eines Gerätes beschäftigt, das die Interaktion zwischen einem Menschen und einem Röhrenbildschirm erlaubt. Computer waren damals so teuer, dass nur Universitäten, große Unternehmen und das Militär sich die großem Rechenschränke leisten können. Und sie waren unglaublich kompliziert zu bedienen: Um mit der Maschine kommunizieren zu können, musste man lange Befehlsfolgen eintippen oder vorab in Lochstreifen gestanzte Befehle einlesen.

Außerdem ist mit noch mehr vorinstallierter Software zu rechnen. Microsoft lässt sich also nicht nur von den Nutzern bezahlen, sondern auch von den Software- und App-Herstellern, die sich einen Platz im meist genutzten Betriebssystem der Welt sichern wollen.

Befürworter eines Abo-Modells merken an, dass Microsoft dadurch die ständige Fortentwicklung seines Betriebssystems und Cloud-Dienste sicherstellt. Schließlich kostet es sehr viel Geld, die Programme auf dem neuesten Stand zu halten, gegen Hackerangriffe abzusichern oder neue Funktionen zu entwickeln.

Windows-Taste + Leertaste wechselt das Tastaturlayout in Windows 10. Beispielsweise von Deutsch auf Englisch. Eine englische Tastatur bietet unter anderem keine Umlaute. Auch sind viele Zeichen an anderer Stelle zu finden. Das kann unwissende Nutzer verwirren. Ein Klick auf die Tastenkombination löst das Problem. 3. Bildschirm sperren (Windows-Taste + L)

Wer schnell seinen Bildschirm sperren möchte, drückt Windows-Taste + L. Wenn ein Passwort eingestellt ist, müssen Sie das im Anmeldebildschirm eingeben. Auf diese Weise verhindern Sie, dass andere Nutzer auf Ihren Desktop zugreifen, wenn Sie vom Platz weggehen.

4. Überschreibemodus deaktivieren (Einfg)

Diese Funktion treibt Word-Nutzer oft zur Verzweiflung: Wenn der Cursor beim Tippen plötzlich alle nachfolgenden Worte zu verschlucken scheint, wurde wohl versehentlich die Einfg-Taste gedrückt. Die aktiviert den Überschreibemodus. Um den Überschreibemodus zu deaktivieren, klicken Sie einfach wieder auf Einfg.

5. Maus mit Tastatur steuern (Alt + Umschalt + Num)

Falls die Maus streikt, hilft die Tastenkombination Alt-Taste, Umschalt-Taste und Num. Damit können Sie die Steuerung der Maus mit der Zehnertastatur aktivieren. Ein Klick auf die vier bewegt die Maus dann beispielsweise nach links. Ein Klick auf 9 nach rechts oben.

6. Schnell alle Fenster minimieren (Windows-Taste + M)

Wer viele Fenster offen hat und sie schnell minimieren will, drückt Windows-Taste und M. Damit werden alle Fenster minimiert. Um Sie wiederherzustellen, drücken Sie Windows-Taste + Umschalt + M.

Alternativ können Sie auch die Tastenkombination Windows-Taste und D drücken. Die wechselt auf den Desktop.

7. Lupe aktivieren Windows-Taste + Pluszeichen

Wenn ein Kollege seine Brille vergessen hat, kann die Tastenkombination Windows-Taste und + helfen. Die aktiviert die Bildschirmlupe. Wenn Sie die Tastenkombination öfters drücken, zoomt das System weiter rein. Mit der Tastenkombination Windowstaste und dem Minuszeichen verkleinern Sie die Vergrößerung bis zur Standardansicht. Mit Windows-Taste + Esc schließen Sie die Bildschirmlupe.

8. Bildschirm drehen

The MacBook Pro 16 also benefits from Apple’s completely redesigned cooling system. Apple claims this incorporates a heat sink that is 35% larger than on the previous-generation MacBook Pro, resulting in 28% better airflow. In our review, we said the difference was “astounding,” with the MacBook Pro 16 “[leaving] its predecessor in the dust in every benchmark and real-life test” we ran. The MacBook Pro 13 does not have this overhauled thermal system, meaning you are likely to eke much more performance out of the larger MacBook Pro.

That is the processor sorted, but what about graphics? Apple has traditionally reserved dedicated graphics chips for its larger laptops, partly due to the limited space available in the MacBook Pro 13, and partly to mark the bigger models as being more premium. That is no different in this comparison.

The MacBook Pro 16 has a few graphics options, including a 4GB AMD Radeon Pro 5300M, a 4GB AMD Radeon Pro 5500M, and an 8GB AMD Radeon Pro 5500M. The MacBook Pro 13, meanwhile, does not have a dedicated graphics option at all, instead having to rely on the Iris Pro Graphics provided by its 10th-generation Intel Ice Lake processors. While these integrated graphics chips are much improved over previous generation processors, they cannot compete with the AMD Radeon Pro graphics in the MacBook Pro 16.

The final consideration when it comes to performance is RAM. Here, the MacBook Pro 13 has improved compared to years past, offering up to 32GB of speedy 3,733MHz LPDDR4X memory. However, there is a notable caveat in that the speed (and amount) of RAM you get depends on your processor choice. The lower-priced MacBook Pro 13 models are stuck on 8th-generation Intel processors and are also limited to either 8GB or 16GB of slower 2,133MHz LPDDR3 memory. If you want the faster RAM — or up to 32GB of it — you need to buy one of the more expensive MacBook Pro 13 models that run 10th-generation Intel processors. We are pretty disappointed by that.

Wer sich ein Notebook kauft, ohne vorher über den überwiegenden Einsatzzweck nachzudenken, läuft Gefahr, ein für seine Arbeitsweise falsches Gerät zu erwischen. Stiftung Warentest erklärt, worauf Käufer achten sollten.

Wird das Notebook fast ausschließlich daheim genutzt, ist man mit einem 15- oder 17-Zoll-Laptop am besten bedient – wer sein Notebook dagegen vor allem unterwegs nutzt, sollte darauf achten, dass das Gewicht 1,5 Kilogramm und die Bildschirmdiagonale 14 Zoll nicht übersteigt, rät die Stiftung Warentest, die für ihre Zeitschrift "test" jetzt 23 mobile Rechner aller Kategorien getestet hat (Ausgabe 1/2019).

Ausgestattet sein sollten große Laptops für daheim mit mindestens acht Gigabyte (GB) Arbeitsspeicher (RAM), möglichst 1.000 GB Massenspeicher und einer Grafikkarte mit mindestens zwei GB Speicher, wenn man viel spielt, oft Fotos bearbeitet oder Videos schneidet. Für unterwegs sollte der Massenspeicher mindestens 256 GB groß und idealerweise als SSD angelegt sein. Als Untergrenze für die Akkulaufzeit geben die Experten 7,5 Stunden beim Abspielen von Videos an. Ob es für unterwegs ein klassisches Ultrabook, ein Convertible mit um 360 Grad drehbarem Touchscreen-Display oder ein Tablet mit abnehmbarer Tastatur (Detachable) sein soll, bleibt Geschmackssache.

Nutzer sollten bei einer Datenträgerbereinigung also aufpassen, dass sie nicht versehentlich wichtige Dateien im Ordner "Downloads" löschen, beispielsweise heruntergeladene Bilder oder Dokumente.
Microsoft stellt offenbar die Weichen für eine Bezahlversion von Windows 10. Für Unternehmen gibt es ein solches Abo-Modell bereits. Demnächst könnten auch Privatnutzer zur Kasse gebeten werden – mit einer Ausnahme.

Windows-Experten vermuten, dass es dabei um Pläne für eine Abo-Version von Windows 10 geht. Für Firmenkunden gibt es so etwas schon. Microsoft bietet Unternehmen Dienste wie Windows 10, das Office-Paket (Office 365) und den Cloud-Service "Azure" im Abonnement an.

Für Microsoft ist die Entwicklung eines ähnlichen Modells für Verbraucher der nächste logische Schritt, um mit Windows 10 Geld zu verdienen. Um bei diesem Schritt nicht allzu viele Nutzer zu verlieren, könnte Microsoft aber auch zusätzlich eine werbefinanzierte Gratis-Version anbieten. Damit dürfe aber auch eine verstärkte Überwachung des Nutzers einher gehen. Schließlich lassen sich aus seinem Verhalten am Computer einige Schlüsse auf seine Interessen, Vorlieben und Eigenschaften ziehen, um ihm dann passenden Angebote zu zeigen.

Das Gaming-Notebook kommt außerdem mit einer doppelten Speicherlösung: Zum einen ist Windows 10 auf der 256 GB großen SSD vorinstalliert. Daneben ist noch eine 1-Terrabyte-Festplatte verbaut. Dadurch erhalten Käufer nicht nur schnellen, sondern auch sehr viel Speicherplatz. Dieser ist wichtig, da Spiele zunehmend mehr Speicher beanspruchen.

Neben HDMI, SD, drei Mal USB 3.0 sowie USB Typ-C verfügt das Notebook auch über einen Mini-DisplayPort. Das 15,6 Zoll große eingebaute Display löst Bilder in Full-HD auf. Optisch macht das MSI-Notebook auch etwas her: Es kommt in einem soliden Metall-Gehäuse und mit einer bunt leuchtenden Tastatur. Auch im MSI-Notebook ist ein eher kleiner Akku verbaut, deshalb macht er mit der kräftigen Hardware schnell schlapp. Laut der Test-Plattform "notebookcheck.com" hält der Rechner nur vier Stunden lang durch. Und der Lüfter ist deutlich zu hören.

Die Testversion von Windows 10 (19H1 Build 18305) bietet jetzt eine spannende neue Sicherheitsfunktion: Mit der "Sandbox" können Nutzer sogar Programme aus unsicheren Quellen installieren, ohne ihren Rechner zu gefährden.

Die neue Testversion steht für Windows-Insider-Tester bereit, die an dem Testprogramm "Fast Ring" teilnehmen. "Fast Ring" ist ein Testprogramm von Microsoft, bei dem Nutzer sehr früh Testversionen von Programmen bekommen, die noch viele Fehler aufweisen können.Das neue Start-Menü sieht darin deutlich schlanker aus, es besteht nur noch aus einer "Kachel-Säule". Diese bekommen aber nur Nutzer zu sehen, die Windows 10 19H1 Build 18305 neu installieren.

Neben dieser optischen Änderung hat Windows 10 auch ein neues Sicherheitsfeature bekommen: eine Sandbox.
Diese "Sandkiste" ist eine vom restlichen Betriebssystem streng getrennte Desktop-Oberfläche, die ein Teil von Windows 10 Pro und Enterprise werden soll. Damit lassen sich fremde und möglicherweise schädliche Programme sicher ausprobieren. So wird verhindert, dass die Schadsoftware in das System eindringen und es beschädigen kann.

Sobald der Nutzer die "Sandbox" beendet hat, werden alle damit verbundenen Dateien und Einstellungen gelöscht. Das eigentliche Windows 10 bleibt "sauber" und kann nicht von außen angegriffen werden.So ist es zum Beispiel möglich, nicht vertrauenswürdige Exe-Dateien auszuprobieren. Sie lassen sich per Download und "Drag & Drop" einfach in der Sandbox ausführen. Die Funktion lässt sich über das Startmenü aufrufen.

So installieren Sie die Sandbox in der Windows 10-Testversion: Gehen Sie über "Einstellungen" in das Apps-Menü. Dort wählen Sie das Untermenü "Apps & Features" aus. In dem neuen Fenster müssen sie nach unten scrollen, bis Sie die Option "Programme und Features" finden. Anschließend klicken Sie auf "Windows Features aktivieren oder deaktivieren" in der linken Menüleiste. Es öffnet sich eine Liste. Dort können Sie nun die "Windows Sandbox" auswählen. Nach einem Neustart sollte sich die Sandbox nun im Startmenü auffinden und ausführen lassen.
