Thankfully, the Acer Chromebook 15 comes with two USB 3.0 ports and an SD card reader, so you can make use of an external storage upgrade. It also comes with an HDR webcam and upward-facing stereo speakers, so you won’t miss out on any video conferences or online lectures. With a weight of 4.41 pounds, you can comfortably take this Chromebook around without breaking your back — or your bank account. For only an extra $11 more than the Acer Chromebook 15, the HP Chromebook 14 offers marginally better features and, arguably, a more stylish chassis. The screen is downsized to 14 inches, making it a more portable option without ruining picture quality with an excessively small display. Like the Acer, it also uses the industry-standard 1,366 x 768 resolution. The smaller display reduces pixelation and provides a clearer picture than it would have with larger screens, making it feel as though it were high definition. Additionally, it has a touchscreen display, so you can maximize efficiency by touching what you need instead of fidgeting with a track pad or mouse.

The AMD A4-9120C processor is its biggest downside due to its noticeable weakness in processing power and overall performance, even with 4GB of RAM, so jumps from tab to tab can become an annoyance after a while. But if you won’t be handling intensive tasks, and are mostly reading, browsing, or typing, then you shouldn’t feel a hit to your productivity. The battery life is only roughly nine and a half hours, which is nearly three hours less than the Acer Chromebook 15, but if you won’t be using it non-stop for each working day, then this should be more than enough runtime to get you through.

The integrated AMD Radeon R4 graphics card isn’t the best either, but simple online games can run just fine. However, video editing is off the table.

In terms of storage, the HP Chromebook 14 doubles the Acer’s capacity with its 32GB eMMC, allowing you to hold twice the number of files and documents. This reduces the need for external storage devices for a good while, but you will likely still need one eventually.

If both of the previous options were too bulky, or if you don’t need the extra size but still want all the power that comes with it, then the Dell Chromebook 3100 should definitely be at the top of your priority list. Unlike the Acer and HP, this one has a much smaller 11.6-inch display. This allows the 1,366 x 768 resolution screen to appear in better quality with lesser pixelation. The screen is on the small side though, so it’s not for those with weak eyesight. It’s also equipped with anti-glare technology that allows you to work in any light setting. The keyboard is also designed to withstand minor spills and tumbles, so clumsy hands while working at the dinner table or walking around are nothing to worry about.

The Dell Chromebook 3100 uses an Intel Celeron N4000 processor with 4GB of RAM, which would normally be considered weak on average laptops — but on Chromebooks, it’s more than competent enough. It doesn’t work at the same efficiency as a regular laptop, but it can definitely handle multitasking and moderate tab-hopping just fine. The insane 14-hour battery life also reduces charging times per day to one at most. This way, you can work for every hour you’re awake — school or no school — and still not need to charge. And while its Intel UHD Graphics 600 card isn’t the most astounding, it can handle undemanding games and video-watching without a hitch.

Lastly, the Dell Chromebook 3100’s screen can be flipped and rotated as you’d like, letting you convert it to fit a variety of purposes. If you want a reliable Chromebook that’s kid-proof and future-proof, the Dell Chromebook 3100 is available on their site for $109 off its retail price, leaving it at an affordable $269.

The HP Chromebook X360 11 G1 is the last on our list, but is definitely not the least. It’s the only Chromebook on our list to feature a clean white facade, which means it already starts off strong with bonus style points. Its 11.6-inch screen is optimal for bringing it around, both in the classroom and at home, as it’s neither too heavy — weighing in at 2.87 pounds — nor too attention-grabbing. As is typical for Chromebooks, it uses a 1,366 x 768 resolution touchscreen display.

Der Dienst namens "Microsoft Managed Desktop" steht wohl kurz vor der Veröffentlichung. Das Angebot richtet sich in erster Linie an Firmen, die durch das Abo-Modell sämtliche Wartungs- und Supportarbeiten für ihre Geräte an Microsoft auslagern können.

Das Abo-Modell sieht vor, dass Nutzer ihre Windows 10-Geräte nicht kaufen, sondern für einen monatlichen Betrag mieten. Durch die Abo-Gebühr werden auch zusätzliche Services abgedeckt, wie etwa regelmäßige Updates sowie andere Support-Aufgaben. Firmen müssten sich nicht mehr mit IT-Problemen herumschlagen und könnten Kosten sparen. Das Monats-Abo soll pro Nutzer abgerechnet werden.

Microsoft bietet bereits ähnliche Support-Services wie das "Microsoft 365"-Abo oder das Leasing-Angebot "Surface as a Service". Am längsten auf dem Markt ist die Standard-SSD im 2,5-Zoll-Format mit SATA-Schnittstelle. Sie steckt in einem Gehäuse, hat das Format einer klassischen 2,5-Zoll-Festplatte und stellt oft mit die einfachste und günstigste SSD-Erweiterungsmöglichkeit für Desktop-PCs und Notebooks dar. 2,5-Zoll-SSDs mit 500 Gigabyte (GB) sind schon für unter 100 Euro zu haben.

Wer das Speed-Maximum herausholen möchte, sollte sich M.2-SSDs mit NVMe-Schnittstelle anschauen. Diese sind um einiges flotter unterwegs als klassische SATA-SSDs. "Für einen Privatanwender, der nur alltägliche Arbeiten mit dem Rechner macht, reicht eine SATA-SSD vollkommen aus", schränkt aber Manuel Christa vom Fachmagazin "PC Games Hardware" ein. NVMe-SSDs seien besonders geeignet, wenn tagtäglich große Datenmengen bewegt werden müssen.

Die gehäuselosen M.2-SSDs erinnern optisch eher an einen Speicherriegel als an eine Festplatte. Sie bestehen nur aus einer kompakten Steckplatine mit Speicherchips und Steuerelektronik – ideal für Notebooks. 2,5-Zoll-SSDs benötigen einen Laufwerksschacht, eine M.2-SSD kann direkt auf die Hauptplatine gesteckt werden. Beim Notebook muss aber ein geeigneter Steckplatz frei und über eine Serviceklappe erreichbar sein.

Microsoft hat auf der IFA 2018 das nächste große Update für Windows 10 angekündigt. Es soll im Oktober kommen. Bei dem sogenannten "Windows 10 Oktober 2018 Update" handelt es sich um die sechste große Aktualisierung für das Betriebssystem. Im April erschien das fünfte Update genannt "Red Stone 4".

Das Oktober-Update soll viele Neuerungen in allen Bereichen enthalten. Beispielsweise wird die Zwischenablage erweitert. Wie "PC Welt" berichtet, können Nutzer in Zukunft mit der Tastenkombination "Windows-Taste + V" eine History aufrufen. Die zeigt zuletzt hinzugefügte Inhalte wie Texte, Bilder und Co. Nutzer können diese wieder auswählen und auch anpinnen. So werden sie nicht mehr von der Zwischenablage gelöscht. Zudem können Nutzer die gespeicherten Inhalte mit anderen Geräten synchronisieren.

Der Windows-Explorer soll einen Dark Mode erhalten, berichtet "Computerbild.de". Aktivieren Nutzer den dunklen Modus, wird in Zukunft auch der Hintergrund im Fenster des Windows-Explorer dunkel sein. Bisher funktionierte das nur mit Windows-Apps. Der Grund: Der Windows-Explorer basierte auf älteren Systemkomponenten.

Der Windows Defender soll um die Schutzfunktion "Windows Defender Exploit Guard" erweitert werden. Die erkennt beispielsweise, wenn Apps sich verdächtig verhalten. Die Funktion gab es bisher nur für Firmenkunden.

Notebook-Nutzer sollen über eine Schnittstelle namens "Thunderbolt 3" externe Grafikkarten künftig während des laufenden Betriebs trennen können. Die Kopplung des Smartphones an den Rechner soll sich dank der App "Your Phone" besser gestalten. Beispielsweise können Android-Nutzer mithilfe der App Fotos direkt an den PC übertragen.

Weitere Neuerungen sind beispielsweise neue Emoticons für Nachrichten. Die Windows-Uhr soll unter anderem dank Software-Zeitstempel genauer laufen. Das Programm "Snipping Tool" mit dem sich Screenshots vom Bildschirm machen lassen, wird entfernt. Stattdessen hat Microsoft das Werkzeug "Bildschirmskizze" ins allgemeine Betriebssystem ausgelagert. Snipping Tool soll aber als App im Windows Store verfügbar sein.

Acer is putting power to the metal with the Triton 500 laptop. Not only does this gaming beast top out with Intel’s 10th-gen processors alongside Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2080 Super mobile graphics, but it also comes in a sleek all-metal design complete with Acer’s innovative all-metal fan blades to help boost airflow. With the custom Acer Vortex cooling system, this year’s Triton 500 gains a 33% boost in cooling compared to last year’s model, and the metal fan blades help to keep noise levels down.

This isn’t the most powerful laptop chipset out there, so don’t expect it to be capable of taking on all computing tasks. The IdeaPad S145 is really designed for light use such as web browsing, emailing, or document writing, and not much else. Battery life is also underwhelming, only lasting a paltry four hours in our video loop test — two hours shy of Lenovo’s claim of six hours.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S145 comes in more powerful configurations, but this one is pretty decent when it comes to overall performance. It’s not the most powerful machine out there, but for $350, it’s a great value.

There are plenty of sub-categories in Asus’ VivoBook line. You’ve got the top-end Pro series, the midrange S series, and the convertible Flip series. The VivoBook 15 belongs somewhere in the middle, and we can say with utmost confidence that it’s a good blend of performance and affordability. The company claims that it offers flagship-class performance for a relatively low price. Does it deliver on that promise? Let’s find out.

The VivoBook 15’s plastic chassis is reasonably sturdy and resists bending when pressure is applied to it. It sports a clean, sleek design that looks surprisingly elegant considering the low price point. Boasting Asus’ trademark ErgoLift hinge design, the keyboard is raised by an angle of two degrees to aid typing and improve thermal ventilation. The keyboard offers a satisfying typing experience. The key action is soft and squidgy with almost no “click” to the action. The touchpad beneath it is large and responsive and supports Windows Precision Drivers for accurate tracking. In terms of connectivity, you get pretty much everything you need in an UltraBook: Two USB 2.0 ports, a USB 3.0 port, a USB-C Thunderbolt port, an HDMI port, a headphone jack, and a Micro-SD card slot.

This laptop flaunts a 15-inch Full HD LCD display with very slim bezels surrounding it. Asus normally nails it in this department, but sadly the VivoBook 15’s screen left us a bit unsatisfied. It sorely lacks brightness which is pretty evident when used outdoors, although it is bright enough for indoor use. Plus, terrible viewing angles mean colors look washed out even with a slight movement away from the central focal point.

At least it’s good performance-wise. Powered by an eighth-gen Intel Core i7-8565U processor, this laptop is very capable of usual daily computing chores, such as web surfing, document writing, spreadsheet calculations, and media playback. However, battery life is just average. Under moderate usage, this laptop can barely keep up at just five hours tops.

The Asus VivoBook 15’s performance is quite good even if you use it for processor-intensive programs. Get it at Best Buy for just $620 instead of $720 — a huge $100 worth of savings.The MacBook Air is now thinner and lighter than ever, yet still possesses the same power and solid build quality typical of Apple devices. Today, though, there are other MacBooks and laptops out there that are thinner and lighter. Even if it’s not the featherweight champion anymore, the MacBook Air still has an excellent build quality, thanks to its eco-friendly aluminum chassis. This is one sleek-looking laptop, with the same clean aesthetic as the rest of its MacBook kin. The latest version of the MacBook Air normally retails for $1,100, but right now you can purchase it at Best Buy for $900 — a huge $200 off.

The MacBook Air looks almost exactly like the previous one, with a few significant hardware and software upgrades. The older version is outfitted with a single Thunderbolt 2 port and two USB 3 ports; the latest one has two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports instead. Although both models have a 13-inch LED-backlit screen, the newer MacBook Air’s display is made better thanks to Apple’s True Tone technology. The screen now has the power to adapt to your environment’s ambient light to make images appear more natural, with accurate colors that aren’t oversaturated. It’s not the best screen we’ve encountered on a MacBook though (that honor goes to the MacBook Pro) since it doesn’t go as bright as we hoped for, but it still looks fantastic.

It proved speedy and performed well when tasked with normal daily workflow, like streaming videos, working in Photoshop, word processing, and web browsing. We did, however, notice a bit of a slowdown when we had multiple browsers, apps, and programs open simultaneously, but not enough to raise concern.

The MacBook Air can last up to eight hours with light web browsing. While not exactly a bad number, that falls well short of Huawei’s MateBook X Pro, which managed 9.5 hours in our test.

Dafür bekommt der Kunde immerhin ein neues 13,3-Zoll-Display, mit einer höheren Auflösung von 2.560 mal 1.600 Bildpunkten. Und Apple hat den nun schwarzen Rahmen weiter schrumpfen lassen. Einen Touchscreen gibt es allerdings immer noch nicht.Unter der Tastatur steckt beim "Air" die gleiche Technik, die auch im MacBook Pro verbaut ist. Der Akku soll einen Tag ohne Nachladen halten. Das Macbook Air besitzt zwei USB-C-Anschlüsse, welche beide die Übertragungstechnik "Thunderbolt 3" verwenden. Diese finden sich nun auch am neuen iPad Pro, nicht aber an den iPhones.

Mehr Arbeitsspeicher kostet deutlich mehr Geld

Mit mehr Speicher steigt auch bei Apple der Preis, und zwar deutlich. So kostet die Air-Variante mit 256 Gigabyte SSD-Speicher 1.349 Euro, die größere Version mit 512 Gigabyte bereits 1.599 Euro. Das ist aber immer noch 50 Euro günstiger als ein Spitzen-iPhone. Wer noch mehr Arbeitsspeicher in seinem MacBook Air will, muss sehr tief in die Tasche greifen. Ein Terabyte schlägt mit stolzen 3.089 Euro zu Buche. Fast der doppelte Preis für den vierfachen Speicherplatz!

Neue Techniken, wie die Gesichtserkennung, bekommt zuerst das iPhone, dann das iPad Pro und zuletzt die Notebooks. Wer die neueste Technik will, muss zum teuersten iPhone greifen.

Die Fritz-Boxen des Berliner Router-Herstellers AVM sind Marktführer in Deutschland. t-online.de fasst zusammen, was die neue Hardware und das neue Betriebssystem Fritz OS 7 können.

Auf dem Berliner „Broadband World Forum“, auf dem die ganze Netzwerk-Branche zusammentrifft, wurde die neue Fritz-Box 7583 erstmals präsentiert. Optisch lassen sich keine Unterschiede zum Vorgänger Fritz-Box 7580 erkennen. Das neue Multitalent aus dem Hause AVM unterstützt jedoch als erstes Modell VDSL inklusive Vectoring und Supervectoring. Auch die ultraschnelle DSL-Technologie "G.fast" mit 106 Megahertz und 212 Megahertz ist mit von der Partie. Dank „Bounding“ kann der Router diese DSL-Technologien auch bündeln, wodurch Geschwindigkeiten von bis zu 3 Gigabit pro Sekunde möglich sind. Diese muss die Leitung allerdings auch liefern.

Der Router funkt neben dem 2,4 Gigahetz n-Standard auch auf dem schnelleren ac-Standard mit 5 Gigahertz. Für Netzwerkspeicher und Drucker sind zwei USB 3.0-Ports sowie vier Gigabit-LAN-Anschlüsse für weitere Netzwerkgeräte vorhanden. Größtes Manko: Die Fritz-Box 7583 wird nicht regulär im Einzelhandel zu kaufen sein. Wer den neuesten AVM-Router nutzen möchte, kann diesen demnächst über den jeweiligen Internet-Provider wie Telekom oder Vodafone beziehen. Oder sie in Kürze gebraucht bei eBay und Co. kaufen.

Ein weiteres verbreitetes Laptop-Problem ist dem mobilen Charakter des Gerätes geschuldet: Weil das Ladekabel häufig ein- und ausgesteckt wird, verschleißt dieses recht schnell. "Defekte Kabel sind eine häufige Fehlerquelle und können Akku und den Laptop selbst massiv beschädigen", warnt Jörg Stenzel. Ist nur die Außenisolierung des Kabels beschädigt, muss man nicht direkt ein neues Netzteil kaufen. Der Experte rät, mit Klebeband, Silikonmasse oder durch Umwickeln das kaputte Kabel schnell zu reparieren und so zu verhindern, dass es zum Kabelbruch kommt.

Die meisten Fehler sind softwarebedingt

Grundsätzlich seien aber "PC-Probleme nicht mehr das, was sie vor zehn Jahren waren", meint Kasztantowicz. So seien von allen Rechnerproblemen nur noch rund fünf Prozent hardwarebedingt, "der Rest sind meist Software- oder Anwender-Fehler", so seine Schätzung.

Liegt kein Anwenderfehler vor und führt auch die beschriebene Jedermann-Selbsthilfe nicht zum Ziel, sollte man sich an Verkäufer oder Hersteller wenden. Händler müssen defekte Geräte im Rahmen der gesetzlichen Gewährleistung in aller Regel bis zwei Jahre nach Kaufdatum reparieren oder gleichwertig austauschen. Doch wimmeln sie Kunden oftmals ab und verweisen auf die Herstellergarantie, weiß Hauke Mormann von der Verbraucherzentrale Nordrhein-Westfalen. Das sollte man aber nicht mit sich machen lassen: "Wenn Ihr Gerät einen Mangel hat, können Sie vom Händler verlangen, dass er das Gerät austauscht oder vernünftig repariert", erklärt der Verbraucherschützer.

Ist die Gewährleistungszeit abgelaufen, kann man das Gerät immer noch zum Hersteller zu schicken. Denn vielleicht gewährt dieser eine längere Garantie, zeigt sich kulant und repariert auf eigene Rechnung oder macht dem Kunden zumindest ein Angebot für eine Reparatur. Auch vor dem Weggeben des Gerätes an den Händler oder vor dem Verschicken an den Händlern ist eine Datensicherung unabdingbar.

Daher ist es kein Zufall, wenn nach dem Besuch einer Angel-Website auf der nächsten besuchten Seite Werbung für einen Angel-Shop erschient. "PrivacyBadger" blockt Web Tracker und hindert sie daran, Daten zu sammeln.

Cookies: Auch sie erstellen Nutzerprofile

Cookies sind kleine Textdateien, die beim Besuch einer Website auf dem Gerät gespeichert werden. Darin werden zum Beispiel die Spracheinstellungen des Nutzers gespeichert, um beim nächsten Besuch der Seite alles wie gewünscht vorzufinden. Durch Cookies lassen sich aber auch Nutzerprofile anlegen, um Gewohnheiten oder Konsumverhalten herauszufinden. Die Firefox-Erweiterung "Cookie AutoDelete" löscht diese automatisch. Alternativ kann man das auch in den Privatsphäre-Einstellungen nach bestimmten Regeln festlegen.

"http" und "https" – der feine Unterschied

Gerade beim Austausch sensibler Daten ist eine Verschlüsselung der Verbindung wichtig. Viele Websites bieten das an, erkennbar am "https" in der Adresszeile im Browser. Bei "http" handelt es sich um eine unverschlüsselte Verbindung. Nicht immer wird standardgemäß die Verbindung verschlüsselt, obwohl das möglich wäre. Cagnazzo empfiehlt daher "HTTPS Everywhere". Die Erweiterung prüft, ob die Website über eine Verschlüsselung verfügt und stellt sie automatisch her.

Mozilla selbst bietet für den Firefox "Multiple Account Container" an. Damit lässt sich jeder Tab im Browser zu einer geschlossenen Umgebung machen, die auf die restlichen Tabs nicht zugreifen kann. So kann man sich zum Beispiel in dieselbe Website mit zwei verschiedenen Accounts gleichzeitig einloggen. Auch um private und berufliche Aktivitäten zu trennen, ist das Add-on sinnvoll. Bager empfiehlt in dem Zusammenhang auch die Erweiterung "Facebook Container". Das soziale Netzwerk kann dann nicht auf andere gleichzeitig geöffnete Websites zugreifen, wenn es im Container geöffnet ist.

Die Erweiterung "Decentraleyes" achtet darauf, möglichst Server in der lokalen Umgebung abzufragen und so Risiken zu reduzieren.

Alle Plugins sind unter addons.firefox.org zu finden und über den Firefox-Browser auch direkt zu installieren. Jo Bager weist aber darauf hin, dass jede Erweiterung auch Auswirkungen auf die Darstellung der Websites haben kann. Sollte etwas nicht mehr funktionieren, müssen vielleicht die Einstellungen des Add-ons angepasst werden. Hilft auch das nicht, lassen sich die Erweiterungen über die Einstellungen des Firefox wieder entfernen.

Wenn der Laptop oder Desktop-PC den Dienst quittiert, ist das nicht nur im beruflichen Kontext ein großes Ärgernis. Doch oft findet man nicht auf Anhieb heraus, was dem Computer fehlt. So leisten Sie erste Hilfe für Ihren Rechner. Man drückt den Schalter, aber nichts passiert. Der Bildschirm bleibt schwarz, kein Ton ist zu hören. So sieht das Horrorszenario jedes Computerbesitzers aus – und viele mussten genau das schon einmal erleben. "Zu den Klassikern unter den Computer-Wehwehchen gehören definitiv nicht hochfahrende Computer", weiß Jörg Stenzel, Computertechnik-Experte aus Marl. Leuchtet das Netzteil beziehungsweise dreht sich der Lüfter, aber der Rechner fährt trotzdem nicht hoch, hat der Fehler höchstwahrscheinlich eine andere Ursache.

Das kann etwa eine defekte Festplatte sein. Sie verhindert, dass der Computer überhaupt erst hochfährt. Allerdings gehen Festplatten selten auf einen Schlag kaputt: "Oft macht eine schwächelnde Festplatte vorher komische Geräusche oder produziert einen Windows-Bluescreen", sagt der Berliner PC-Experte Martin Kasztantowicz. Wer diese Zeichen hört oder sieht, sollte zuallererst seine Daten auf einer externen Festplatte sichern.

The Asus ImagineBook laptop is stylishly simple with a clean Pure White finish and a textured lid. Considering its price, it is surprisingly elegant and doesn’t scream cheap. It tips the scales at just 1.7kg so it’s not going to weigh you down. Further, it has a quiet, fanless design that will allow you to concentrate while you work, making it perfect when working in libraries or cafes. This design lends it a longer battery life too and improves reliability by not sucking dirt and dust into the laptop. Although a fanless design does have its merits, this laptop, unfortunately, starts to get warm after a few hours of use and especially if you have multiple programs open. For connectivity, you get one USB Type-C port (very nice considering the price), a standard USB 3.1 Type-A and USB 2.0 ports, one HDMI port, and a microSD card reader. It doesn’t have a DVD/CD drive, but we expect that.

Inside the ImagineBook is an Intel Core m3 processor that’s suitable for everyday computing tasks. This isn’t the most advanced processor out there so we recommend not installing any CPU-intensive software on it. It comes preloaded with Windows 10 that offers full compatibility with a wide range of apps. Its Intel UHD Graphics 615 can handle everyday image quality processing for internet use, basic photo editing, and a bit of casual gaming.

For its price, we were surprised by how good this laptop’s display is. By no means is it the best screen out there, but nonetheless we’re quite happy with it. Colors didn’t look washed out and contrasts were good, although it’s not very bright and viewing angles are limited. The keyboard is also excellent. Keystroke was precise, nicely clicky, and the overall tying experience was a delight.

The Asus ImagineBook is unbelievably good for an entry-level laptop, garnering a terrific 4.4 out of 5 rating on Best Buy. Get it for the very reasonable price of $300 today.

The 14-inch Lenovo IdeaPad S145is primarily aimed at the budget-conscious market. With a base model that’s only $350 on Best Buy ($30 less than its normal retail price of $380), this is one of the cheapest portables that we’ve ever encountered. What you get is an all-plastic affair (unsurprising for the price) but it does appear robust and well-constructed. The plastic chassis also makes it super lightweight. You won’t have any difficulty lugging this laptop around.

The IdeaPad S145’s large 15.6-inch display provides plenty of screen real estate for doing productivity tasks, watching movies, or maybe even a spot of light gaming. But since it only packs 1,366 x 768 of pixel resolution, it is not very sharp and can prove lackluster to most people. It does lay flat at 180-degrees like all IdeaPad laptops, which permits other people a full view of your work presentation. Furthermore, this laptop’s keyboard is pretty good. The U-shaped keys are nicely clicky and have a slight bounce to them, and the sizeable touchpad is accurate and responsive. In terms of connectivity, this laptop has three USB Type-A ports. It doesn’t have a Type-C port but there is an HDMI port for connecting to an external monitor. There is also an SD card reader, but it’s a rather slow one.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro is a thing of beauty and remains the most luxurious laptop out there. It’s sturdy as a rock and features an all-aluminum unibody that lacks any visible seams aside from those on the bottom. However, there are quite a few things that stop us from fully recommending it. Although it does boast a fantastic display and top-tier processor and hard drive performance, its frustrating lack of ports and lackluster keyboard need to be fixed. Right now, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with 7th-gen Intel Core i5 processor is available on Amazon for an $70 below its usual price. Get it for $1,230 instead of $1300.

Let’s start with the good stuff. The MacBook Pro’s Retina display is terrific. Boasting a pixel resolution of 2,560 × 1,600, the screen is not only super high definition but also ridiculously bright, colorful, and rich in contrast. With a maximum brightness of 548 lux, it doesn’t matter if you’re going to use this in the brightest room on the planet — you’re bound to see everything. Images look extremely realistic and colors are fantastic thanks to True Tone technology. Finally, the contrast ratio is excellent.

The MacBook Pro can deliver perfect blacks next to the whitest of whites without trouble.

We also don’t have any major complaints when it comes to performance. In our processor and hard drive tests, the MacBook Pro was able to give outstanding numbers that are among the best we’ve ever encountered. However, this laptop isn’t for gaming. Graphically demanding games like Civilization VI ran poorly with lots of glitches.

We blame the Intel integrated graphics chip and Apple’s OpenGL support, which hasn’t been updated significantly for years.

Even though we’re super happy to see that the MacBook Pro still has a headphone jack, Apple decided that USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 is the future and has ditched every other port. Yes, USB-C is all you get, two on each side for a total of four. Although the simplicity of the port selection does have some benefits (every port is a charging port, so you can plug the wall adapter into whichever is more convenient), you’re going to need lots of adapters for any other peripheral you’re planning to attach.

Want to use an external display? You need an adapter. External hard drive? Adapter. Wired input of any sort? Adapter. Ethernet? Adapter. SD card? Adapter. The biggest crime of all? You can’t even plug an iPhone into it without purchasing an adapter.

The keyboard is also not very good. While it’s definitely an improvement over the older MacBook Pros thanks to improved key travel, it continues to suffer a stiff, abrupt bottoming action that can make long typing sessions tiresome.

This MacBook Pro includes the Touch Bar (units that don’t have this feature tend to be cheaper) but it’s honestly not very useful. It’s great to look at, and that’s about it. Yes, it provides a quick way to scroll through lists and can also be useful if you’d like to scroll through a video, but it is limited by its size. The miniature content previews it displays are helpful but are so small that it’s often hard to tell tabs apart, even with just three or four open. Opening even more tabs renders each of them impossible to tap. Sadly, it’s just not very integral to the MacBook experience.

Despite its flaws, its hard to discredit the 13-inch MacBook Pro’s incredible build quality, lightning-fast performance, and stunning display. Get it for $1,230 on Amazon today.

The XPS 13 is one attractive Ultrabook. Its anodized aluminum chassis comes in Alpine White, Rose Gold, or Platinum Silver (all stunning), with a faint pearlescent sheen to it. The Dell logo sits solitary yet triumphant in the center of the lid. Although it has long been derided as the “nosecam” because of its unfortunate placement at the bottom of the screen, the webcam has now migrated to its rightful place at the top center. It also happens to be the tiniest webcam we’ve ever seen, although it can still take a decent picture. What’s more, the webcam is compatible with Windows Hello so you can log in with just your face. Outlining the screen is what Dell calls the InfinityEdge bezel, and it is beautifully scant and modern. With dimensions of 11.9 x 7.8 x 0.5 inches, this 2.7-pound laptop is super portable and would be the perfect partner of mobile professionals.

This laptop’s 13-inch 4K Ultra HD InfinityEdge touch display is packed with 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and bursts with sumptuous colors, deep contrasts, and an incredible amount of detail. It also gets astonishingly bright, averaging 375 nits. Just like the display, the side-firing speakers are excellent. They can easily fill a medium-sized room with clear and rich sound, although the bass lacks punch, a clear compromise resulting from its slimness.

Another fine feature of the XPS 13 is its backlit keyboard. It remains one of its greatest strengths, with a firm and tactile bottoming action. Finicky typists should be warned that the layout is still on the small side but with a typing experience this comfortable, who cares? Keeping up is the wonderfully responsive touchpad that boasts full Windows Precision Touchpad support.

The same is true of Advanced Optimus. Nvidia’s Optimus lets a laptop turn off its discrete GPU to save battery life, transforming light-duty work to integrated graphics. However, the Optimus controller must be able to put the integrated graphics in full control, allowing tasks to be handed off to the discrete graphics when necessary.

As a result, Nvidia’s G-Sync, which synchronizes frame output and display refresh rate, wasn’t compatible with Optimus. That’s a big problem. Without Optimus, many gaming laptops turn in terrible battery life figures compared to similar laptops that don’t include a discrete Nvidia GPU.

Fortunately, Advanced Optimus is a way around that. Nvidia has developed a Dynamic Display Switch which can easily toggle between the Beyond just G-Sync support, Advanced Optimus also supports advanced screen technology, such as 4K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.

Unlike Dynamic Boost, Nvidia says implementing Advanced Optimus takes a bit more work. It’ll be a less frequent feature, but we already have the first example: The Lenovo Legion 7i.

The next generation of Max-Q includes a couple more small tweaks to advance the technology. It a new low-voltage GDDR6 memory to shave off a watt or two from the RAM. Nvidia says it worked closely with memory vendors to optimize memory subsystems.

Max-Q also has what it calls “Next Gen Regulator Efficiency.” Nvidia says around 15% of power is lost at the voltage regulator, which works out to around 12 watts in a Max-Q laptop. By making this regular more efficient, Nvidia says it can save more power and give that straight to the GPU core.

However, Nvidia has decided not to brand the next generation of Max-Q differently. That means the average buyer likely won’t know the difference between a Max-Q 2.0 laptop and an older Max-Q machine. The added confusion of Advanced Optimus and Dynamic Boost being “add-on” features certainly doesn’t help. Gamers might have trouble figuring out if a laptop has the features they want.

Nvidia says it hopes to continue to improve Max-Q over the years, rather than rebrand it. There’s no question Nvidia laptops are getting both thinner and more powerful. But with RTX/GTX, Ti, Super, and Max-Q all floating in the ether, it stands to make buying a gaming laptop more confusing than ever.

"In Werbebannern können Schädlinge untergebracht sein, die über Scripte automatisch heruntergeladen werden." Besonders auf zwielichtigen Seiten oder illegalen Download-Portalen ist mit dieser Gefahr zu rechnen. Einfach behelfen können sich Nutzer hier etwa mit dem Add-On "uBlock Origin". "uMatrix" ermöglicht dem Nutzer die Analyse und Blockade beispielsweise von Skripten und anderen Anfragen aus dem Netz. Auch die Erweiterung "NoScript Security Suite" stellt zum Beispiel Java oder Flash aus und erhöht so die Sicherheit. Allerdings hat das auch Nebenwirkungen. Einige Websites werden nicht mehr wie gewohnt funktionieren. Anmeldemasken verschwinden etwa, oder Videos lassen sich nicht mehr schauen. Jo Bager vom Fachmagazin «c't» empfiehlt diese Erweiterungen deshalb nur Nutzern, die auch bereit sind, die nötigen Feinabstimmungen vorzunehmen.

Da es während oder nach einem Update immer wieder zu Komplikationen kommen kann, sollte man alle wichtigen Dokumente sichern, zum Beispiel auf einer externen Festplatte. Stellt man hinterher fest, dass alles sauber übernommen wurde, kann die Sicherung wieder gelöscht oder beim nächsten Upgrade überschrieben werden.

Es gibt im Grunde zwei Möglichkeiten: Entweder man kopiert manuell alle wichtigen Dateien auf einen Datenträger. Oder man nutzt das "Sichern und Wiederherstellen"-Tool in den Systemeinstellungen, um ein Systemabbild zu erstellen. Das Tool bietet auch die Option, nur bestimmte Ordner (zum Beispiel nur die "Eigene Dateien"-Bibliotheken) zu exportieren. Das spart Zeit und Speicherplatz.

2. Version überprüfen und wichtige Updates nachholen

Um ein reibungsloses Upgrade zu garantieren, sollte man vorher sicher gehen, dass Windows auf dem neuesten Stand ist. Wurde das letzte April-Update bereits installiert? Falls nicht, muss das zuerst nachgeholt werden. Um die Versionsnummer herauszufinden, drücken Sie die Windows-Taste, geben "winver" ein und drücken Enter. In dem aufpoppenden Fenster sollte die Versionsnummer 1803 stehen.

Stellen Sie sicher, dass auch alle wichtigen Sicherheits-Updates eingespielt wurden und holen Sie dies gegebenenfalls nach. Dazu nutzen Sie wie gewohnt die "nach Updates suchen"-Funktion.

Läuft alles nach Plan, werden bei jedem Upgrade sämtliche Einstellungen, Software und Treiber übernommen und sind auch unter dem neuen Windows sofort wieder einsatzbereit. So schleppt man aber auch viele Altlasten von Version zu Version. Das nimmt unnötig Speicherplatz in Anspruch und kann auch zu Problemen führen. Vor dem nächsten großen Update lohnt es sich deshalb, kurz aufzuräumen.

4. Die Alternative: Neuinstallation

Versierte Nutzer können das Upgrade zum Anlass nehmen, um ihren Computer völlig neu aufzusetzen. Eine Neuinstallation ("Clean Install") hat den Vorteil, dass man ohne Ballast zur neuen Version wechselt. So bleibt Speicherplatz frei und das Risiko von Konflikten durch veraltete Treibersoftware wird verringert.

Für einen "Clean-Install" brauch man das "Media Creation Tool", das man von der Microsoft-Seite herunterlädt. Damit lässt sich eine ISO-Datei von Windows 10 erstellen, die man anschließend auf einem bootfähigen USB-Stick oder einem anderen Datenträger abspeichert. Damit wird der PC dann völlig neu aufgesetzt. Achten Sie darauf, dass Sie auch gewiss die neue Version 1803 herunterladen und nicht etwa das Vorgänger-Programm. Sonst war die ganze Arbeit umsonst.

Bei vielen Festnetz-Flatrates sind bestimmte Nummern ausgeschlossen. Das heißt: Ein Anruf kostet extra. Und zwar sehr viel. Zum Beispiel 25 Cent pro Minute bei einem Anruf auf eine Handynummer. Ein Anruf von Handy zu Handy ist da oft die günstigere Variante.Der teure Anruf lässt sich relativ einfach verhindern, wenn man IP-Telefonie über eine Fritzbox nutzt. Denn bestimmte Nummern, wie Mobilfunknummern, die mit "017" beginnen, lassen sich sperren, so dass sie nicht mehr angerufen werden können.

Dazu öffnet man das Menü der Fritzbox, indem man "fritz.box" in die Adresszeile des Browsers tippt. Wurde ein Passwort vergeben, muss man es jetzt eingeben. Es öffnet sich dann das Menü, das je nach FritzOS unterschiedlich aussehen kann.

Nach vielen Tests veröffentlichte Microsoft dann am 13. November wieder das Oktober-Update, auch bekannt als Windows Version 1809. Diesmal versprach der Konzern Besserung. Allerdings macht die neue Version erneut Schwierigkeiten: Wer zum Beispiel Apples iCloud nutzt, könnte bei der Synchronisierung oder Teilen seiner Alben Probleme bekommen. Betroffen sind laut Microsoft Nutzer der iCloud-Version 7.7.0.27. Das schreibt der Konzern auf seiner Webseite.

Microsoft hat darum die Aktualisierung auf die neue Windows-Version für Rechner mit iCloud blockiert. Zudem rät der Konzern davon ab, das Update manuell zu starten. Derzeit arbeiten Apple und Microsoft an einer Lösung des Problems.

Manchen Nutzern wird auffallen, dass nach einem Update plötzlich mehrere Gigabyte Speicher auf dem Computer fehlen. Das liegt daran, dass Windows die alte Version des Systems für zehn Tage im sogenannten "windows.old"-Ordner speichert. So können Nutzer bei Problemen zur letzten, stabilen Version zurückkehren. Wer keine zehn Tage warten will oder den Platz sofort braucht, kann den Speicher auch manuell freigeben.

Ab sofort steht das neue Windows 10-Update zum Download bereit. Doch viele Nutzer sind skeptisch: Schließlich gab es bei der früheren Version Probleme. Wir erklären, wie beim Update eigentlich nichts schief gehen kann.

Microsoft hat am Mittwoch nach anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten das große Herbst-Update für Windows 10 erneut veröffentlicht. Zu den Neuheiten zählt unter anderem ein Dunkelmodus, ein überarbeitetes Screenshot-Tool, eine verbesserte Suche und Synchronisations-Funktionen für das Smartphone. Das Update wird ab dem 14. Oktober ausgerollt und in den nächsten Wochen automatisch installiert. Für Microsoft hat es sich bewährt, die Rechner nacheinander "in Wellen" zu bedienen. So wird die Belastung auf die Microsoft-Server etwas verteilt. Es werden also nicht alle Rechner gleichzeitig bedacht und manche Nutzer müssen sich etwas länger gedulden.

Erfahrungsgemäß kann es auch schon mal mehrere Monate dauern, bis alle versorgt sind. Wer nicht so lange warten möchte, kann sich das Update auch per Direkt-Download besorgen oder in den Systemeinstellungen eine Aktualisierung erzwingen. Gerade in den Anfangstagen dürfte der Andrang aber groß sein. Das Dateipaket dürfte etwa 15 bis 20 Gigabyte groß sein. Auch bei einer schnellen Leitung, nimmt der Download also etwas Zeit in Anspruch.

In Europa wird das neue Windows sowieso aufgrund der Zeitverschiebung vermutlich erst in den Abendstunden verfügbar sein. Das Programm wird dann auf der offiziellen Windows 10 Download-Seite von Microsoft zum Download angeboten. Dazu bietet Microsoft auch einen Upgrade-Assistenten an, der den Nutzer durch den Installationsprozess leitet.

Wer sich für das "Windows Insider"-Programm angemeldet hat, bekommt Updates früher zugespielt als alle anderen. In den "Update und Sicherheit"-Einstellungen kann man sich dafür registrieren. Man sollte allerdings im Hinterkopf behalten, dass man damit auch alle zukünftigen Updates früher bekommt. Microsoft nutzt das Programm quasi als "Versuchslabor", um seine Updates vor dem offiziellen Release zu testen. Wer sich daran beteiligt, riskiert also auch, möglicherweise fehlerhafte Updates zu bekommen. Außerdem fordert Microsoft immer wieder Feedback ein.

Umgekehrt bedeutet das: Je länger jemand auf das Update wartet, desto sicherer kann er sich sein, dass es ausführlich getestet wurde und keine Probleme macht. Geduld wird also mit mehr Sicherheit belohnt. So war es auch im aktuellen Fall: Nachdem sich die ersten Nutzer über Dateiverlust beschwert hatten, zog Microsoft das Update eilig zurück. Die nun zur Verfügung gestellte Version soll aber fehlerfrei sein.

Es ist ein Unterschied wie Tag und Nacht: Die sogenannte "High Dynamic Range"-Bildtechnologie (HDR) lässt Filme und Videos in Farben besseren Farben und tieferen Kontrasten erstrahlen. Immer mehr Smartphones und Tablets unterstützen die Technologie. Auch auf Laptop-Displays können Nutzer inzwischen die bessere Bildqualität beim Video-Streaming genießen.

Bei den neuen, hochwertigen Laptops erfüllt der eingebaute Display häufig schon die Voraussetzungen, um HDR-Videos unter der aktuellen Windows 10-Version darzustellen. Achten Sie auf die Herstellerangaben. Der Bildschirm sollte mindestens eine Auflösung von 1080p haben und eine maximale Helligkeit von mindestens 300 nits (das ist die Einheit für die sogenannte "Leuchtdichte").

Wer einen PC mit externem Display nutzt, muss bei beiden Geräten darauf achten, dass sie HDR-Unterstützung bieten. Der Bildschirm muss HDR10 unterstützen und mindestens über einen DisplayPort 1.4 oder HDMI 2.0-Eingang verfügen.Egal, ob PC oder Laptop: Die Grafik-Karte sollte bei der Wiedergabe von Filmmaterial mitspielen, das per "PlayReady" mit einem digitalen Kopierschutz versehen wurde.

Gehen Sie in die Einstellungen und wählen Sie im "System"-Menü die "Anzeige"-Einstellungen aus. Dort wird das Untermenü "Windows HD Color" angeboten, unter dem Sie die HDR-Einstellungen verwalten können. Dort können Sie nun das HDR-Streaming aktivieren. Ein weiterer Klick führt zu den Kalibrierungseinstellungen. Dort wird ein Vorschauvideo angezeigt, das dabei helfen soll, die Kontraste und Farbgebung nach Belieben auszubalancieren. Wer mit dem Ergebnis nicht zufrieden ist, kann die Einstellungen jederzeit auf den Standard zurücksetzen.

HDR-Streaming reizt die volle Leistungsfähigkeit und Helligkeit des Bildschirms aus. Das bedeutet, dass mehr Strom verbraucht wird. Aus gutem Grund funktioniert der HDR-Modus daher nur, wenn der Laptop standardmäßig auf Netzbetrieb gestellt ist.Wer auch unterwegs nicht auf den vollen Filmgenuss verzichten will, muss am Ende des HDR-Einstellungsmenüs das Häkchen bei "Anzeigehelligkeit für HDR-Videos im Akkumodus nicht erhöhen" setzen. Dadurch wird das Video in HDR-Qualität wiedergegeben und gleichzeitig der Akku geschont.

Manche Windows-Nutzer sahen in der kostenlosen Mail-App für Windows 10 plötzlich Werbung. Microsoft hat die Anzeigen wieder entfernt und sie zum "Experiment" erklärt. Doch eine FAQ-Seite zum Thema wirft Fragen auf.Microsoft testete für kurze Zeit Werbung in seiner Mail-App für Windows 10. So erschien bei einigen Nutzern des sogenannten "Insider-Programms" im oberen Bereich der App eine personalisierte Anzeige. Das berichtet die Webseite "Thurrot.com" mit Bezug auf ein italienisches Blog. Wer am Insider-Programm teilnimmt, kann vorab Windows-Versionen und neue Funktionen vorab testen.

Nutzer können in die Mail-App Windows 10 Nachrichen aus verschiedenen Programmen einlaufen lassen: beispielsweise aus Outlook oder Gmail. Um die Werbung zu entfernen, sollten Nutzer ein Abonnement für Office 365 kaufen. Wie "Engadget.com" berichtet, sahen vor allem Nutzer aus Australien, Brasilien, Indien und Kanada die Online-Anzeigen.

Microsofts Kommunikations-Manager Frank X. Shaw gab per Twitter Entwarnung: "Dies war ein experimentelles Feature, das nie dazu gedacht war, umfassend getestet zu werden, und es wird abgeschaltet." "Thurrot.com" verweist in diesem Zusammenhang auf eine Support-Seite von Microsoft, die der Konzern ebenfalls entfernt hat. Sie befasst sich ausführlich mit Anzeigen im Mail-Programm. Ein Abbild der Seite vom 11. November ist noch im Cache von Google verfügbar. Auf Anfrage von t-online.de wollte Microsoft der Stellungnahme von Frank Shaw nichts hinzufügen.

Erneut Probleme mit dem Windows-Oktober-Update: Microsoft hat die Aktualisierung auf die neue Version des Betriebssystems für einige Nutzer blockiert. Betroffen sind vor allem Systeme, die mit Apples iCloud arbeiten.

Im Oktober lieferte Microsoft das sogenannte "Windows 10 Oktober 2018 Update" für sein aktuelles Betriebssystem. Doch schon kurz nach der Veröffentlichung zog der Konzern die Aktualisierung zurück: Nutzer klagten über verloren gegangene Daten.

Das Ganze sei laut dem BSI für den durchschnittlichen Nutzer "allerdings nur schwer umzusetzen." Laut Microsoft soll das Sammeln solcher der Daten dabei helfen, Windows 10 zu verbessern. Datenschützer sind aber skeptisch, schreibt das BSI. Vor allem, was die Speicherung und Verarbeitung der Daten angeht. Laut dem Bundesamt habe Microsoft "umfassende Möglichkeiten, auf System- und Nutzungsinformationen zuzugreifen und diese an den Hersteller zu versenden."

Das BSI hat für die Untersuchung die Sicherheitsfirma ERNW GmbH beauftragt und die Version 1607 von Windows 10 verwendet. Das Projekt läuft unter dem Namen "SiSyPHuS Win10" (Studie zu Systemintegrität, Protokollierung, Härtung und Sicherheitsfunktionen in Windows 10. Der erste Teil der Studie heißt "Analyse der Telemetriekomponenten in Windows 10" und steht auf der Webseite des BSI zum Download bereit.

Sie verzögern den Systemstart und verschlingen unnötig Rechenleistung: Die Rede ist von Programmen, die sich unter Windows das Recht herausnehmen, ungefragt und oft ungewollt zu starten, sobald man das Betriebssystem hochfährt.

Auf diese Weise können Sie alle anderen Dienste ebenfalls beenden. Natürlich sollten Sie aber nicht versuchen, den Virenscanner oder beim Notebook den Touchpad-Treiber am Starten zu hindern, weil diese Programme stets im Hintergrund aktiv sein müssen.

Falls Sie den Zweck eines Programms nicht kennen, googeln Sie am besten seine Funktion. Im Zweifelsfall gilt: Den jeweiligen Eintrag besser nicht verändern. Viele Anwendungen vom Office-Paket übers Packprogramm bis hin zum PDF-Tool müssen aber ganz sicher nicht immer gleich mit Windows starten. Sie können getrost mit einem Klick per rechter Maustaste auf den entsprechenden Eintrag auf "Deaktiviert" gesetzt werden.

Mit "Windows Hello" können sich Windows-Nutzer unter anderem per Gesichtserkennung einloggen. Jetzt plant Microsoft, die Funktion auf alle seine Dienste auszuweiten – und will damit Passwörter überflüssig machen.

Wer sich in seinen Windows-10-Rechner einloggen will, hat verschiedene Optionen: Als Erstes bietet sich die Anmeldung per Kennwort an. Daneben können Nutzer auch auf "Windows Hello" zurückgreifen: Der Microsoft-Dienst erlaubt, sich per Fingerabdruck-, Gesichts- oder Iriserkenung einzuloggen.

Jetzt plant Microsoft, das Log-in-Verfahren auf seine anderen Dienste auszuweiten. So sollen Nutzer sich ab dem "Windows 10 Oktober Update" auch per "Windows Hello" in Dienste wie OneDrive oder Outlook einloggen können. Das schreibt ein Microsoft-Manager in einem Blog-Beitrag.

Microsoft begründet den Schritt so: "Passwörter können sich schwer zu merken sein, werden oft wiederverwendet und können genutzt werden, um Ihr Konto überall, jederzeit und von jedem Gerät aus zu hacken." Um das Problem zu lösen, sei der Konzern darum "auf einer Mission, um Passwörter zu eliminieren."

Microsoft verspricht, dass Anmeldeverfahren wie "Windows Hello" das Log-In-Verfahren sicherer machen und Nutzer-Konten besser schützen sollen. Zudem will der Konzern auch Authentifizierung per App oder mithilfe eines Security-Token ermöglichen. Dabei handelt es sich um einen speziellen USB-Stick mit der sich Nutzer authentifizieren können. Laut Microsoft sollen mit kommenden Updates immer mehr Dienste die neuen Anmeldeverfahren anbieten.

Mit dem jüngsten Herbst-Update hat Microsoft unter anderem auch an der Video-Wiedergabe in HDR-Qualität gefeilt. Die neuen Funktionen sollen brillantere Farben und tiefere Kontraste auf den PC-Bildschirm zaubern. Wir erklären, wie Sie die Funktion nutzen können.

Es öffnet sich ein Fenster mit dem Werkzeugkasten. Unter dem Drop-Down-Menü "Modus" können Sie festlegen, ob Sie den ganzen Bildschirm oder nur einzelne Fenster abfotografieren möchten. Sie können auch eine rechteckige oder eine freie Auswahl erstellen. Sobald Sie den Modus festgelegt haben, wird der Hintergrund ausgegraut und Sie können mit der Auswahl des Screenshots beginnen. Halten Sie dazu die Maustaste gedrückt und ziehen Sie den Cursor über die Stelle, die abfotografiert werden soll.

Wenn Sie loslassen erscheint eine Vorschau auf das fertige Bild. Sie können das nun bearbeiten, per Mail verschicken oder abspeichern. Wenn Sie mit dem Ergebnis nicht zufrieden sind, klicken Sie einfach auf "Neu" und beginnen von vorne.

Abkürzung per Shortcut

Mit ein paar Tastaturkürzeln geht es schneller. Nach dem Drücken bestimmter Tastenkombinationen werden die Screenshots automatisch angefertigt und in einem vordefinierten Bilder-Ordner abgelegt. Unter Windows 10 landen die fertigen Bilder für gewöhnlich im Ordner mit dem Dateipfad "C:\Benutzer\Ihr Nutzername\Bilder\Screenshots". Die Bilder werden zunächst im PNG-Format abgelegt.

Wer das Herbst-Update installiert hat, stößt auf einen entsprechenden Hinweis, sobald er das Snipping Tool aufruft. Es öffnet sich ein Fenster mit einem Link zum Microsoft Store, wo die neue Screenshot-App heruntergeladen werden kann. Das ist jedoch optional – wer mit dem altgedienten Snipping Tool zufrieden ist, kann es auch noch weiterhin wie gewohnt nutzen.

In einer Studie hat das Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik die Sicherheitseigenschaften von Windows 10 untersucht. Sie zeigt: Das Betriebssystem sammelt viele Daten – und Nutzer können nur schwer etwas dagegen tun.

Wie sicher ist Windows 10? Mit dieser Frage beschäftigt sich derzeit das Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI). Das Amt lässt derzeit "sicherheitskritische Funktionen" in Windows 10 testen.

Die ersten Ergebnisse hat das BSI bereits veröffentlicht. Dabei geht es um sogenannte Diagnose-Daten. Das sind Informationen, die Microsoft von Windows 10 Rechnern sammelt. Laut dem BSI sind das unter anderem "Daten über Nutzung des Computers unter Windows 10 und der ihm angeschlossenen Geräte, Daten über die Performance des Systems sowie Daten des Windows Defenders."

So können Nutzer unter anderem dafür Dienste in der sogenannten Registrierungsdatenbank ("Registry") deaktivieren. Hier speichert Windows Informationen zum System oder Programmen. Auch lassen sich Regeln für die Firewall bestimmen, die das Senden von Daten blockieren. Ein Tipp rät beispielsweise, neben den empfohlenen Einstellungen von Microsoft auch Dienste wie "Windows Update" oder "Cloud-Based-Protection" vom Windows Defender zu deaktivieren. Dieser Dienst überträgt Informationen zu verdächtiger Software an Microsoft.
