Being well-known for its quality, Dell’s G5 15 is not one to disappoint. It’s only a single step down from the Dell G7 15 in terms of overall specs, making it a top-tier contender for one of Dell’s most capable gaming laptops. As the name suggests, it has a 15.6-inch display that uses the standard Full HD 1080p resolution with a 60Hz refresh rate for casual gaming and any other purposes you might have in mind. It’s also designed with IPS for consistent visuals and stunning color accuracy from every angle.

It uses a ninth-generation Intel Core i7 processor with a whopping 16GB of RAM for lightning-quick navigation, heavy-duty multitasking, and snappy loading times. Coupled with its Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q graphics card, it can easily handle even some of the biggest games in the industry with little to no problems and no less than 40fps even at ultra-high settings, some of which include games like Nier: Automata, Borderlands 3, and Red Dead Redemption. Where it falls flat, however, is its shoddy speakers and poor sound quality. Regardless of whether it’s a game or video, you’ll need to invest in an external speaker to get the most out of your gaming experience.

On average, a new battery lasts about five years in ideal conditions, though your mileage may vary. By ideal conditions, we mean that the car’s electrical system is in tip-top shape, that the battery regularly goes through full charging cycles, and that it’s not subjected to extreme temperatures on a regular basis.

To elaborate, your car’s electrical system consists of many parts like the alternator, the voltage regulator, plus a real latticework of wires and grounds. An issue with any of the above could shorten your battery’s life expectancy if it’s ignored. Preventive maintenance goes a long way. Keep an eye out for early warning signs, like headlights that dim when you turn on the heater, or instrument panel lights that are markedly dimmer than the day you bought the car.

As for full charging cycles, keep in mind your car’s 12-volt battery dispenses a significant amount of electricity to zap the starter motor into motion every time you start the engine. If your commute is half a mile long, the alternator might not have time to recharge the battery before you reach your destination and turn off the engine. We’re not saying you should live further from work, but if you only drive short distances, take your car on a 20- to 30-minute trip every now and then to ensure the battery gets the full charge it needs.

The effect that freezing-cold temperatures have on a car battery are relatively well known. An engine requires more energy to start when the thermometer dips into the 20s, or below, partly because the oil gets thicker. At the same time, the cold makes the battery less effective. It’s weaker, yet it needs to work harder, and that’s not a good combination. What many motorists don’t realize is that hot weather takes an even greater toll on their car’s battery, and the cause of a dead battery in November might be the July heat. While starting is often easier in the summer, rising temperatures under the hood — where many batteries are located — cause the water in the electrolyte solution to evaporate, and cause the plates to corrode.

This is less of a worry if your battery is in the trunk, or under the rear seat, though it will still get hot. And, ultimately, there’s not a lot you can do to keep it cool. The best measures you can take are to test your battery regularly, preferably in the spring and in the fall, and to keep a set of jumper cables in the trunk, or under one of the front seats.

Don’t fret if you’re stuck with a dead battery. Whether you’re in your driveway, at work, or in the middle of a road trip, there are ways to get your car running again so that you can drive it home, or to the nearest repair shop. If your car has a manual transmission, you can start it by pushing it, putting it in second gear, and releasing the clutch once you’ve built up enough speed. Note you’ll probably need at least one helper to pull this off. Alternatively, a good set of jumper cables and a second car will channel enough electricity to your battery for it to turn the starter motor. There are also jumper packs that achieve the same result without needing the second car.

Lastly, changing a car battery is easier than it sounds. Broadly speaking, it’s a task that takes no more than 10 minutes, doesn’t require advanced knowledge, and can be completed with only a basic set of tools and simple precautions.

Tesla plans to debut low-cost electric car batteries that can last up to a million miles and could make electric Tesla models the same price or even less than a car run by gasoline.

These low-cost batteries would first appear in Tesla’s Model 3 in China later this year or early 2021. Other markets, like North America, would follow after, according to an exclusive report from Reuters.

The “million-mile” battery would use low-cobalt and cobalt-free battery chemistries since cobalt is what drives up electric vehicle battery prices. Tesla’s new battery would also use “chemical additives, materials, and coatings that will reduce internal stress and enable batteries to store more energy for longer periods,” Reuters reports.

Right now, Tesla’s Model S is the cheapest vehicle in the company’s lineup, starting at $39,990 at the very base price. If the new battery proves to be more affordable, it could drastically reduce the price, making Tesla models more widely available to more drivers. In an even broader sense, it would allow more people the ability to buy electric cars over gasoline ones.

Aside from batteries, Tesla also has its eye on expanding its business to achieve the status of a big power company, according to the new report. Tesla reportedly wants to supply electricity to both drivers and companies in the future.

Tesla currently produces solar roofs and solar panels, as well as backup home batteries that individuals and businesses can purchase, but adding more power options to people could expand Tesla far beyond that of an electric car company.

Bis zum Jahr 2020 soll dafür eine Milliarde Euro investiert werden, wie die Kommission am Donnerstag im Brüssel mitteilte. Der Schritt sei "entscheidend für die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der EU und ihre Unabhängigkeit in der Datenwirtschaft".

"Supercomputer sind der Motor der digitalen Wirtschaft", erklärte der für den digitalen Binnenmarkt zuständige Vize-Präsident der Kommission, Andrus Ansip. "Die EU muss in diesem harten Rennen aufholen, denn wir haben noch keine Supercomputer in der weltweiten Top-Ten-Liste."

Dieser Mangel an Unabhängigkeit sei "ein Risiko für die Privatsphäre, den Datenschutz, Geschäftsgeheimnisse und das Dateneigentum, insbesondere bei sensiblen Anwendungen".

Zudem seien Hochleistungsrechner ein "unverzichtbares Werkzeug" für das Verständnis großer wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Herausforderungen – wie etwa die frühe Erkennung von Krankheiten oder die Vorhersage der Zugbahnen von Wirbelstürmen.

Konkret will die Kommission für den Aufbau der Supercomputer-Infrastruktur im Rahmen des gemeinsamen Unternehmens EuroHPC Computersysteme anschaffen, die hundert Billiarden Rechenoperationen pro Sekunde ausführen können. Bis zu den Jahren 2022 und 2023 soll zudem die Entwicklung von Systemen in der EU unterstützt werden, die eine Trillion Rechenoperationen pro Sekunde schaffen.

Der PC-Hersteller HP hat eine weltweite Rückruf-Aktion gestartet. Es geht um Akkus von Notebooks, von denen eine Brandgefahr ausgeht. Sie können überhitzen und Kunden gefährden, teilte das Unternehmen am Freitag mit.

Die betroffenen Batterien wurden in vier Modellen fest verbaut: ProBook, Envy, Pavilion und ZBook. Diese wurden zwischen Dezember 2015 und Dezember 2017 verkauft.

Den Austausch und einen Ersatzakku bietet HP kostenlos an. Nutzer sollten deshalb prüfen, ob ihre Geräte betroffen sind und den Akku in den Sicherheitsmodus versetzen. Bis zum Austausch sollten sie nur noch mit einem original HP-Netzteil verwendet werden.

Laut HP betrifft der Rückruf rund 0,1 Prozent Prozent der global vertriebenen HP-Systeme der vergangenen zwei Jahre.

Es sei erst seit kurzem bekannt, dass Batterien, die von einem Lieferanten für bestimmte Notebooks und Mobile Workstations bereitgestellt werden, ein Sicherheitsproblem darstellen können, erklärte das Unternehmen t-online.de.

Nicht nur für selbstfahrende Autos, sondern auch generell werden im Alltag Sensoren immer wichtiger und die Hersteller – so konnte man sich auf der Messe überzeugen – verbauen sie mittlerweile überall – egal ob in Handschuhen, Windeln oder Socken, Fahrrädern oder Autos. Wer will unterwegs sein Handgepäck nicht selbst in der Hand haben oder in Zeiten von Argwohn gegenüber vermeintlich "herrenlosen Koffern" an Flughäfen einen Großalarm auslösen?

Den Trends zum dünneren Gerät mit Sprachassistenten können sich auch Laptops nicht verschließen. Ein Hersteller zeigte auf der Technikmesse CES sogar die Vision, Smartphone als Laptop zu nutzen.

Den Bedarf an einem Laptop reduzieren wollen die Hersteller Razer und Miraxess: Sie haben Prototypen vorgestellt, mit denen das Smartphone zur Rechenzentrale wird. Sie werden an Geräte in Laptopform angeschlossen, die lediglich Bildschirm, Tastatur und Akku enthalten. Beim Mirabook wird das Smartphone per USB-C-Kabel angeschlossen. Unterstützt werden etwa Samsung Galaxy S8, Huawei Mate 10 oder LG G5. Der Razer-Prototyp Linda funktioniert nur mit dem Razer Phone: Das kantige Handy wird in das Notebook-Dock unterhalb der Tastatur eingelegt und dort zum Touchpad. Wann das Projekt marktreif ist, lässt Razer noch offen.

Samsung hat ein ähnliches Konzept bereits auf dem Markt. Eine spezielle Docking-Station macht aus dem Topmodell-Smartphone Galaxy S8 einen einfachen Desktop-Rechner, an den Monitor und Tastatur angeschlossen werden.

Lenovo setzt bei den klassischen Laptops auf etwas mehr Sicherheit: Mehrere der angekündigten Thinkpads der Serien X, T und L erhalten sogenannte ThinkShutter - eingebaute Abdeckungen für die Webcam. Die mit dem Titel Yoga versehenen Modelle verfügen über ein 360-Grad-Scharnier, mit dem sich die Notebooks in Tablets verwandeln lassen. Alle Geräte wurden auch mit neuen Prozessoren ausgestattet. Sie sollen im März oder April erscheinen. Preise hat Lenovo noch nicht genannt.

Bis zu 15 Stunden Arbeitszeit bei 985 Gramm Gewicht verspricht das ZenBook 13 von Asus. Das 13-Zoll-Notebook kommt mit Intel-Prozessoren der achten Generation. Mit dem X507 zeigten die Taiwaner in Las Vegas noch ein Notebook mit Full-HD-Display mit schmalen Bildschirmrändern. Als Prozessoren kommen Chips aus Intels siebter Generation der Core-i-Serie zum Einsatz, für 3D-Grafik sorgt Nvidias MX110-Chip. Besonders dünn wird es beim Swift 7, das Acer Ende März auf den Markt bringen will.

Doch mit 1,5 Kilogramm ist es nicht unbedingt ein Leichtgewicht. Die Möglichkeit, es als Tablet-Computer per Touchscreen zu benutzen, macht es für einige Nutzer interessant, zumal es den Kauf eines Tablets überflüssig machen kann.Ab sofort ist die "Classic Intellimouse", eine kabelgebundene Maus von Microsoft verfügbar. Sie soll laut Hersteller als schneller Allrounder für Office-Anwendungen, kreative Arbeit und zum Spielen dienen.

Inspiriert ist die neue Maus von der "IntelliMouse 3.0", einer der beliebtesten Mäuse von Microsoft. Sie ist kabelgebunden und hat ein klassisches, ergonomisch geformtes Gehäuse. Ausgestattet ist sie mit der "BlueTrack"-Technik und einer hohen Auflösung von über 3000 dpi, die auch kleinste Bewegungen schnell erfasst und umsetzt.

Fünf frei belegbare Tasten und ein schmales, einrastendes Mausrad sollen für erhöhten Bedienkomfort sorgen. Ergänzt werden sie von zwei leicht erreichbaren Daumentasten.

Optisch auffällig ist eine dezente weiße LED-Beleuchtung an der vorderen Unterseite. Die neue Maus kostet knapp 43 Euro in der Kabel-Version.

Die CES 2018 ist vorbei. Was mit der Präsentation von Kühlschränken, Waschmaschinen und Fernsehern begann, ist heute eine digitale Spielwiese, die weit über die Branche der Unterhaltungselektronik hinaus wächst. In Las Vegas präsentierten die großen Marken in diesem Jahr vor allem Vernetztes.

Interessanterweise sieht der Besucher auf der CES von Jahr zu Jahr weniger Smartphones. Das ist weder verwunderlich noch traurig. Erwähnenswert sind zwei Lösungen: Der Hersteller ZTE zeigte ein faltbares Display, das aufklappbar ist und zwei Displays, die zu einem verbunden werden können.

Auf mich hat die elegante und großformatige Nutzungsmöglichkeit einen sehr guten Eindruck gemacht. Außerdem zeigte Skyworth ein biegsames AMOLED-Display, beispielhaft als Armband. Beide Produkte waren keine Sensation, aber doch ein Fingerzeig auf ein spannendes Anwendungsumfeld für eine wörtlich „flexible“ Nutzung.

Oder wie erklären sich Produkte wie einen per Sprachbefehl beleuchtbaren Schminkspiegel – ein Knopf hätte genügt. Oder warum muss ich Google zu Hilfe nehmen, um eine Tür zu öffnen, wenn ich mit einer Türklinke deutlich schneller bin?

Wie schon in den vergangenen Jahren sind es wieder die Automobilhersteller, die auf der CES Präsenz zeigen. Autonomes Fahren ist nach wie vor das große Thema: Audi, BWM & Co demonstrierten die Integration von Sensoren zur Erkennung von Gegenständen und die Datenübermittlung per Mobilfunkstandard 5G und die Interaktion zwischen Fahrzeugen.



Meiner Ansicht nach liegen noch große Brocken im Weg zum Durchbruch, die allerdings nicht auf Messen weggeräumt werden können. Hier meine ich vor allem Versicherungs-Aspekte und auch ethisch schwer lösbare Konflike im Straßenverkehr. Sicherer als heute dürfte der Verkehr mit autonomen Fahrzeugen werden und sich langfristig durchsetzen. Wann und wie genau – das steht noch in den Sternen.

When a laptop battery gets too hot, the electrochemical reactions inside speed up — but that doesn’t mean that the battery grows more efficient. Instead, the battery is now producing lots of energy that it cannot use, and cannot safely route to any hardware. This creates even more heat, compounding the problem. Not only can this eventually damage the inside of the battery permanently, but it also wears the battery out with a bunch of chemical reactions that aren’t necessary, but burn through a battery’s lifespan anyway.

Today’s lithium-ion batteries are durable, but they can only take so much heat. For example, if you are charging your battery and it starts to get overly warm, perhaps because the CPU or graphics processor is working hard or the environment is overly hot, then shut the device down and pop the battery out if possible. Give it a break so that it can cool down or you can move to someplace with a lower temperature. Many modern laptops have sealed batteries, in which case shutting the machine down and letting it cool is highly recommended if maximizing the battery’s lifespan is your concern.

Likewise, keep the laptop off of your lap. If testicular damage and discomfort weren’t good enough reasons, then with many machines you’re also making the problem worse by blocking vents. You’ll want to make sure that both vents that pull in cool air and those that expel hot air are able to do their jobs.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you should avoid placing your laptop anywhere it might become hot. That includes your car on a hot summer day, beneath a window that gets direct sunlight, or near a space heater. Unusual conditions such as these can do a lot of damage to a battery in a short period of time, though you may not realize it immediately.

Cold temperatures usually aren’t a problem down to a certain point, and storing a battery in a cool place is recommended, but don’t leave your laptop in freezing temperatures. Too much cold can also kill the battery permanently or reduce its lifespan.

If you want to watch temperature even more closely (say, you live in a particularly hot climate), then there are a number of apps you can run that will monitor laptop heat. This includes CoreTemp and Real Temp for Windows, which you can download for free.

Battery Monitor: Made for MacOS, this app shows battery charge in a friendly interface with info on battery health and cycles, alerts, battery temperature readings, and current total capacity.

If you don’t want to download any dedicated apps, you still have options available. For example, you can open up PowerShell on your Windows computer and run the command “powercfg /batteryreport” which will provide you a file path to this somewhat secret report: Copy or drag it to a browser window, and you’ll get a page with full information on your battery, including recent usage, cycle counts, usage history, and more. It doesn’t have the smooth interface of a monitoring app, but you don’t have to download anything extra to get it.

If you look at Windows 10 power settings, you will see one of the modes is a Battery saver mode that will help your battery last longer when it’s low on power. As we mentioned, having a battery constantly bottom out to 0% levels can be unhealthy for it, so enabling the battery saver mode can help prevent this. MacOS has similar capabilities.

Adaptive brightness modes are also a good idea to enable! These adjust the brightness of your screen according to ambient light to help save on battery life when you are in a well-lit spot. Those energy savings will add up over time and lead to a longer battery life. While you’re at it, think about enabling your laptop’s dark mode as well.

Update your operating system

Finally, a note about your software — keep it updated! Companies work hard to improve the way that programs use power via software updates. The same operating system on a later patch could use significantly less battery power, giving your battery a longer lifespan without changing anything else. And so, review your OS and keep your machine — and its battery — on a healthy diet of updates.

Derzeit werden laut Dell nur 12,5 Prozent des entstehenden Elektroschrotts zur Herstellung neuer Produkte wiederverwendet. Allein in den USA werden jedes Jahr Gold und Silber im Wert von 60 Millionen Dollar aus nicht mehr benötigten Smartphones weggeworfen.

Die Wiederverwendung von Gold aus gebrauchten Geräten hat nicht nur wirtschaftliche, sondern auch ökologische Vorteile, weil Schäden für Gesundheit und Umwelt, die üblicherweise mit dem Abbau von Gold verbunden sind, vermieden werden, erklärt der Hersteller.

Die ersten kommerziellen Erfolge der Ära nach dem "Apple II" erlebte Steve Jobs aber nicht mehr in dem von ihm mitbegründeten Unternehmen. Im September 1985 wurde er in einem regelrechten Showdown mit dem damaligen Apple-CEO John Sculley vom Aufsichtsrat dazu gedrängt, die Firma zu verlassen. Spezielle Scharniere ermöglichen es, das Display auf den Rücken zu klappen und aus dem Notebook ein Tablet zu machen. Trennen lässt sich der Tablet-Teil und der Teil mit der Tastatur allerdings nicht. Die zwei eingebauten Lautsprecher sind Dolby Audio zertifiziert, die eingebaute HD-Webkamera besitzt ein Mikrofon für Videochats. Schnelles WLAN- und Bluetooth-Funk sind ebenfalls vorhanden.

Der Zwei-Zellen-Akku soll bis zu 6 Stunden Arbeitszeit ohne Aufladen durchhalten. Mit dem Akku kommt der Wende-Laptop auf 1,5 Kilogramm Gewicht.

Einschätzung: Das Aldi-Notebook ist von den Daten her ein gutes Angebot. Auch der Preis ist in Ordnung. Für Filmfans dürfte der Monitor jedoch etwas zu klein sein. Auch der Arbeitsspeicher und der Flash-Speicher könnten größer sein. Das Zwei-in-Eins-Gerät ist für den mobilen Einsatz gedacht.

Seriöse Siegel wie der "Blaue Engel", aber auch Tests von Stiftung Warentest, Öko-Test oder Bewertungen des Reparaturportals "ifixit.com" helfen weiter. Auch hilfreich - falls vorhanden - die Umweltdatenblätter einzelner Produkte.

Ansonsten rät das UBA zur schonenden und langen Nutzung von Elektrogeräten. Vor vermeidbaren Schäden schützen Hüllen oder Display-Folien. Ausgediente Geräte gibt man am besten bei kommunalen Sammelstellen oder im Handel zurück oder verkauft sie. Wenn möglich sollte nicht jedes Gerät neu angeschafft werden. In vielen Fällen können auch gebrauchte Geräte vorgezogen werden.

Mit dem Rechner Lisa unternahm Apple vor 35 Jahren den ersten Versuch, eine grafische Bedienoberfläche in den Massenmarkt einzuführen. Das war bahnbrechend. Jedoch scheiterte einer der wichtigsten Computer der Technik-Geschichte grandios.

Manchmal fällt der dritte Schritt viel schwerer als die beiden ersten. So erging es zumindest Anfang der 80er Jahre dem damals noch sehr jungen Start-up Apple Computer. Den ersten halbwegs brauchbaren Heimcomputer, den "Apple I", hatte Mitbegründer Steve Wozniak schon 1976 entwickelt. Mit dem "Apple II" wurde das Unternehmen dann aus dem Stand, bzw. aus der Garage der Eltern von Steve Jobs heraus kommerziell erfolgreich. Die Verkaufszahlen stiegen rasant: von 2500 Geräten im Jahr 1977 auf 210.000 im Jahr 1981.

Einen Nachfolger für den ersten Mega-Erfolg von Apple zu finden, erwies sich jedoch als große Herausforderung. Erst am 19. Januar 1983, vor 35 Jahren, konnte Steve Jobs den Rechner "Lisa" ankündigen. Der nach Jobs Tochter benannte Rechner sollte den Erfolg des "Apple II" fortschreiben. Doch es kam ganz anders.

Zunächst hatte Steve Jobs auf die Entwicklung eines "Apple III" gesetzt, der sich vom Vorgängermodell "Apple II" gar nicht so sehr unterscheiden sollte. 80 statt 40 Zeichen pro Bildschirmzeile, mehr Speicher, kleinere Verbesserungen im Detail, aber kein großer Wurf. Es zeichnete sich dann schnell ab, dass dieser per Tastatureingaben gesteuerte Computer die PC-Revolution nicht wirklich vorantreiben konnte.

Der Meinungsumschwung bei Steve Jobs wurde vor allem durch mehrere Besuche 1979 im legendären kalifornische

n Forschungszentrum Xerox Parc im benachbarten Palo Alto ausgelöst: "Ich war total geblendet von dem ersten Ding, das sie mir zeigten: die grafische Bedienoberfläche. Ich dachte, das ist das beste Ding, was mir je in meinem Leben unter die Augen gekommen ist", sagte Jobs 1995 in einem TV-Interview.

Im Xerox Parc hatte Jobs quasi die Erleuchtung gesehen. Nun wollte er auch bei Apple einen Computer bauen, der kinderleicht mit einer Maus zu bedienen war. Den Eintritt in das Forschungszentrum hatte sich Apple durch einen Aktiendeal erkauft: Xerox durfte noch vor dem Börsengang von Apple 100.000 Aktien des Start-up-Unternehmens für den Schnäppchenpreis von einer Millionen Dollar kaufen. Den Xerox-Managern dämmerte allerdings erst zehn Jahre später, dass sie Apple das geistige Eigentum ihrer Forscher für ein Taschengeld auf dem Silbertablett serviert hatten. Eine Schadenersatzklage gegen Apple hatte aber vor Gericht keinen Erfolg.

Apple unternahm unterdessen 1983 mit "Lisa" den ersten Versuch, die grafische Bedienoberfläche auf dem Massenmarkt einzuführen. In Anzeigen wurde der Rechner als "Maserati für Ihr Gehirn" beworben. "Lisa war der erste kommerziell vertriebene Computer, der über eine Maus und die für uns heute selbstverständliche Benutzeroberfläche mit Fenstern und Symbolen verfügte", sagt Andreas Stolte vom Heinz-Nixdorf-Museumsforum in Paderborn. "Zuvor mussten die Nutzer komplizierte Befehlszeilen eintippen, um den Computer auf Trab zu halten. So vereinfachte der nach Jobs Tochter benannte Computer die Bedienung enorm."

Apple wollte die Kunden mit sieben Büro- und Grafikprogrammen und dem damals beachtlichen Arbeitsspeicher von einem Megabyte für Lisa gewinnen. Allerdings war der Preis viel zu hoch, um die vielen Interessenten tatsächlich zum Kauf zu bewegen. In den USA kostete der Computer knapp 10.000 Dollar, in Deutschland waren das rund 30.000 DM. Nicht einmal 30.000 Stück wurden verkauft.

Im April 1985 zog Apple die Reißleine und stoppte die Produktion. Unverkäufliche 2700 Exemplare wurden heimlich auf einer Müllkippe in Utah vergraben. Das Prinzip der grafischen Bedienoberfläche landete aber nicht auf dem Müll, sondern setzte sich auf breiter Fläche durch. Im Januar 1984 brachte Apple dann den ersten Macintosh auf den Markt, der nicht so teuer wie Lisa war und sich nach einer schwierigen Startphase dann besser verkaufte. Im November 1985 lieferte Microsoft eine erste Version von Windows ebenfalls mit grafischer Benutzeroberfläche aus.

Februar sind das EliteBook 830 G5 mit 13-Zoll-Bildschirm und das EliteBook 840 G5, laut HP "das dünnste 14-Zoll-Business-Notebook der Welt" sowie das EliteBook 850 G5 verfügbar. Letztere sind mit jeweils einer separaten Grafikkarte (AMD Radeon RX540) ausgestattet.

Das 830 G5 und das 840 G5 sind in Deutschland ab Ende Februar ab 1.600 Euro zu haben. Der Preis des Topmodells 850 G5 ist noch nicht bekannt. Das kann man durchaus als eine Kampfansage in Richtung Microsoft verstehen.

Auch Microsofts Windows 10 hat einen Nachtmodus. Beim nächtlichen Arbeits-Marathon kann ein solcher Blaulichtfilter durchaus angenehm und gut für die Gesundheit sein.

Windows 10 bietet einen Nachtmodus, der die blauen Bestandteile im Licht, das Displays ausstrahlen, filtert. Das soll den Augen beim Arbeiten in Dämmerung und dunkler Umgebung Entspannung bringen und später das Einschlafen leichter machen. Die Schaltfläche für den Modus findet sich im Info-Center in der unteren rechten Ecke des Desktop-Bildschirms. Hier kann mit einem Klick auf "Nachtmodus" die wärmere Farbtemperatur aktiviert werden.

Wer möchte, dass dies automatisch geschieht, zum Beispiel wenn es dunkel wird, kann das auch über die Systemeinstellungen erledigen. Dort lässt sich unter "System" und "Anzeigen" auch ein Zeitraum einstellen, in dem der Nachtmodus des Bildschirms automatisch aktiv ist.

Die weit verbreitete Abspiel-Software VLC Media Player kann nun über den Chromecast-Standard Videos an kompatible Geräte streamen. Außerdem wird in der gerade veröffentlichten Version 3.0 auch die Wiedergabe von 8K-Auflösungen, Hochkontrast-Material (HDR), 360-Grad-Filmen oder 3D-Audio unterstützt, wie die Entwickler mitteilen. Ebenfalls neu: Nutzer können vom Player aus die Inhalte lokaler Netzwerkspeicher durchsuchen. Der Open-Source-Player steht sowohl für Windows und macOS als auch für Android und iOS zum Download bereit.

Lenovo ruft eine bestimmte Notebook-Generation zurück, bei der es offenbar Produktionsfehler gegeben hat. Ohne eine Reparatur könnte der Akku in Flammen aufgehen.

Lenovo ruft eine Generation des Thinkpad X1 Carbon zurück – ob Kunden betroffen sind, können sie auf einer Supportseite des Herstellers ermitteln. Dafür reicht die Eingabe der Seriennummer aus, erklärt Lenovo. Thinkpadbesitzer aus Deutschland können auch die Telefonnummer 0800 / 500 46 18 anrufen und den Status ihres Geräts prüfen lassen.

Lenovo hat etliche Exemplare des Thinkpad X1 Carbon (5. Generation) zu einer technischen Überprüfung zurückgerufen, weil sich eine Schraube lösen und die Batterie beschädigen könnte. Schlimmstenfalls besteht dadurch Brandgefahr. Betroffen können Geräte der Bautypen 20HQ, 20HR, 20K3 und 20K4 sein, die zwischen Dezember 2016 und Oktober 2017 hergestellt wurden. Nach Angaben des Notebookherstellers handelt es sich dabei deutschlandweit um eine geringe fünfstellige Anzahl.

Apple may be going all-in on its quest to ditch Intel in favor of in-house processors. In a new research note obtained by MacRumors, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims the Cupertino, California-based manufacturer will introduce “several” new Mac notebooks as well as desktop computers next year.

As rumored before, these new Macs will be powered by Arm-based processors instead of the x86 processors they have come with for ages. Switching to the Arm architecture, Kuo believes, will bring down processor costs by 40% to 60% and enable Apple to offer a more diverse Mac lineup.

In addition to that, Arm-based computers have plenty more advantages over their x86 counterparts. Since they’re usually reserved for mobile devices, they consume less power which ultimately leads to longer endurance, and can function in more compact designs — making them ideal for on-the-go productivity, a trait customers increasingly seek.

What’s more intriguing here is that Apple is also developing desktop computers with Arm processors. Even though Apple’s mobile processors for the iPad Pro are known to be quite powerful for their compact design, it’s unclear how the company plans to integrate them inside iMacs. Plus, Arm chips are low-power components, so there’s also the question of how they will perform while being always connected to an active power source.

Meanwhile, Apple is bolstering its line of iPad Pro tablets with trackpad support. Therefore it remains to be seen how the company will position these ARM-based products.

However, as we’ve seen in the case of Windows PCs, the success of Arm-based computers hinges strongly on software support. Their upsides over x86 won’t kick in until third-party Mac developers update their apps. At the heart of the Spectre x360, you’ll find Intel’s latest 8th-generation quad-core i5 processor, which works great for any productivity tasks. However, its Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics chip doesn’t make it a great gaming laptop. It performed adequately for less demanding games and older titles, but it won’t handle most modern AAA titles.

The gorgeous HP Spectre Folio is a combination of vintage mixed with modern functionality. It mimics a fine leather portfolio (hence the name) and is even wrapped in the kind of crepe paper that’s usually reserved for designer dress shirts. We normally don’t care about packaging, but the way the Folio is presented is simply exquisite. Since it’s made of genuine leather with magnesium alloy components, it needs to be treated the way you would care for a leather jacket or luxury handbag. You can only use a soft cloth to clean it, and you should not use any harsh chemicals on it or you’ll risk ruining the material.

The Folio’s 13.3-inch touchscreen is also a thing of beauty. It offers a bright and crisp picture with wide viewing angles. It’s also quick and responsive, keeping up with taps, swipes, and multi-finger gestures. What’s even better is the screen isn’t a power hog. It uses Intel’s power-efficient display technology and runs on as little as 1 watt of power even at maximum brightness. Normal laptops use 2 watts of power with the same brightness setting. This contributes to the Folio’s tremendous battery life. During our web-browsing test, it was able to last an outstanding 10 hours. It performed even better in our high-definition video loop test, managing 17 hours.

This laptop’s 13.3-inch FHD 1,920 x 1,080 non-touch display (the 4K touchscreen version will set you back by $300, and it’s a power hog) bursts with sumptuous colors, deep contrasts, and an incredible amount of detail. It also gets astonishingly bright, averaging 375 nits. Just like the display, the side-firing speakers are excellent. They can easily fill a medium-sized room with clear and rich sound, although the bass lacks punch, a clear compromise made in exchange for its slimness.

Another fine feature of the XPS 13 is its backlit keyboard, which remains one of its greatest strengths, with a firm and tactile bottoming action. Finicky typists should be warned that the layout is still on the small side but with a typing experience this comfortable, who cares? Keeping up is the wonderfully responsive touchpad that boasts full Windows Precision Touchpad support.

Armed with a 10th-gen Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB of RAM, this laptop provides incredibly smooth and lightning-fast performance without any hint of lag. And with its 256 GB PCIe SSD, transferring files is far from sluggish. However, its Intel UHD 620 Graphics GPU isn’t equipped to process graphically taxing games such as Battlefield V and Destiny 2. It will perform much better with older titles with less demanding graphics. In terms of battery life, as we’ve mentioned, we recommend you skip the 4K touchscreen model if you want the most endurance. In our continuous web surfing test, this unit was able to last over 12 hours.

The Dell XPS 13 is thin, fast, and longlasting, making it our favorite ultraportable thus far. And now that the nosecam has finally met its demise, (the one thing that marred the previous model), it’s practically perfect. Get it for $900 – a cool $100 less than its normal retail price – on Dell’s official website.

The XPS 15 laptop has a silver aluminum finish that makes it look classy and sophisticated. It may not compete with the more modern aesthetic of a Surface or a Mac (not even the XPS 13), but it’s still a head-turner. It’s a formidable speed demon, capable of running heavy software like Photoshop, Pro Tools, and CAD swiftly with little heat. Zum Glück geht es meistens auch ohne Flash. Einige Browser blocken ohnehin Flash-Inhalte in den Standardeinstellungen. "Bei Google Chrome und Microsoft Edge werden die meisten Flash-Inhalte erst mal blockiert und bei Firefox kann man diese Funktion zumindest einschalten", erklärt Ronald Eikenberg. Auch das BSI rät dazu, solche aktiven Inhalte wie Flash als Standard zu deaktivieren.

Aber was ist, wenn man einmal eine Website aufruft, die noch nicht ohne Flash funktioniert? "Sollte man wirklich eine Webseite haben, die man unbedingt nutzen will und die es nur mit Flash gibt, dann würde ich die in Chrome oder einem Chrome-basierten Browser angucken", rät Informatiker Jörg Geiger vom Fachmagazin "Chip". Dort kann man Flash dann für diese Seite ausnahmsweise erlauben. Microsoft Edge unter Windows 10 bietet diese Funktion auch.

Aber wenn so viele Stellen von Flash abraten: Wieso ist die Software dann noch so verbreitet? "Letztlich kann man sagen, dass der Adobe Flash Player zur Steinzeit-Technologie gehört", sagt Ronald Eikenberg. Der Nachfolger ist mit HTML 5 längst da und breitet sich immer weiter aus.

Beginnen wir mit dem neuen Microsoft Surface Book 2 mit 15-Zoll-Display. Es wird seit dem 15. Februar 2018 in Deutschland ausgeliefert.

Besonders vielseitig wird das Notebook dadurch, dass sich der Display-Teil abnehmen lässt. Dieser lässt sich mittels Touchscreen als Tablet nutzen. Braucht der Nutzer mehr Rechenpower, kann er das Display-Teil umgekehrt an die Einheit mit der Tastatur andocken, in dem auch die Grafikkarte steckt. So ist man für fast jede Anwendung gut gewappnet.

Edles Design in grau-silber bieten auf die neuen Business-Notebooks von HP. Der Hersteller setzt auf ein Keilprofi und ein eloxiertes Aluminium-Gehäuse. Die EliteBook 800-Serie besitzt ein "ultra-leuchtendes" Display, das sich automatisch an wechselnde Lichtbedingungen anpassen soll. Angeboten werden zwei Modelle mit 13 und 14-Zoll-Monitor. HTML 5 wird bereits auf vielen Websites für Videos, Audio oder dynamische Grafiken genutzt. Youtube etwa ist ganz ohne Flash nutzbar. Auch Jörg Geiger von der "Chip" sagt: "Die Betreiber von Webseiten haben in den letzten Jahren schon ganz gut auf HTML5 umgestellt, das macht Flash eigentlich überflüssig."

Das Logo von HTML 5: Adobes Flash Player ist schon etwas veraltet, doch es gibt bereits einen Nachfolger: "HTML 5". Kann man Flash also einfach vom Rechner entfernen? Ja, sagt Jörg Geiger. Entwickler Adobe hält dafür ein Deinstallationsprogramm zum Download bereit. Auch im Download-Center von "Chip" lässt es sich herunterladen.

Pünktlich zum Mobile World Congress in Barcelona stellt die Berliner Firma AVM neue Router-Modelle für extraschnelles Surfen vor. Der Nachfolger der beliebten Hochkant-Fritzbox 7580 wurde speziell für Haushalte entwickelt, die von ihrem Provider mit Breitbandanschlüssen per Supervectoring oder G.fast versorgt werden. Beide Technologien ermöglichen schnelles Gigabit-Internet. Die Versorgung mit entsprechenden Anschlüssen ist in Deutschland noch im Aufbau.

Mit der Fritzbox 7583 bringt AVM nichtsdestotrotz jetzt schon einen Router auf den Markt, der beide Technologien unterstützt. Er ist dementsprechend nur über die Provider erhältlich, die solche Anschlüsse anbieten.

Das als "Multitalent" beworbene Gerät soll durch die Bündelung mehrerer Breitbandzugänge (sogenanntes "Bonding") Datenraten von bis zu drei Gigabit pro Sekunde mit G.fast ermöglichen, beziehungsweise 600 Mbit/s mit Supervectoring 35b. Allerdings wird dieses Verfahren vom deutschen Netz bisher nicht unterstützt, schreibt "Computerbild". Hier bleibt es also bei Downloadraten von maximal 1,5 Gigabit pro Sekunde mit G.Fast und 300 Megabit pro Sekunde mit Supervectoring 35b.

Beim Supervectoring 35b, einer Weiterentwicklung des VDSL2-Standards, kommt das Gigabit-Internet über das bestehende Kupfernetz. Die Übertragung wird jedoch durch die Ausweitung der Bandbreite am Endanschluss und das Unterdrücken von Störsignalen optimiert. So bevorzugen Wirtschaftsverbände und Kommunen einen Umstieg auf Glasfasernetze, was jedoch mit erheblichen Kosten verbunden wäre. Provider hingegen lehnen eine Festlegung auf Glasfaser als Innovationshemmer ab.

CDU/CSU und SPD haben sich im Koalitionsvertrag zwar grundsätzlich auf die flächendeckende Versorgung mit Breitbandinternet-Anschlüssen bis 2025 verständigt. Die Details ließen die Koalitionäre aber noch offen.

Für andere Prozessoren stehen sie noch aus. In Kürze soll es auch für die Generation Coffee Lake, Kaby Lake, Broadwell und Haswell sogenannte Microcode-Updates geben. Windows-7-Computer ohne Virenscanner werden offenbar nicht mehr mit Sicherheitsupdates versorgt, berichtet "heise online". Grund ist demnach ein fehlender Eintrag in der Systemregistrierung, der verhindert, dass neuere Updates als jene vom Dezember 2017 in der Update-Liste auftauchen. Ob das eigene System betroffen ist, zeigt ein Blick in den Update-Verlauf der Systemsteuerung. Fehlt hier ein Eintrag mit dem Namen "2018-01-Monatliches Sicherheitsqualitätsrollup für Windows 7..." oder jünger, ist Handeln angesagt.

Laut "heise.de" ist die einfachste Lösung die Installation eines kostenlosen Virenscanners wie etwa "Microsoft Security Essentials" oder eines anderen Produkts.Die Fritzbox 7583 wurde entwickelt, um das Maximum aus alten Kupferleitungen herauszuholen. Die meisten Nutzer hierzulande werden wohl dennoch nicht in den Genuss der vom Hersteller genannten Spitzengeschwindigkeiten kommen.

The latest version of the MacBook Air looks almost exactly like the previous one, with a few significant hardware and software upgrades. We did, however, notice a bit of a slowdown when we had multiple browsers, apps, and programs open simultaneously, but not enough to raise concern.

The MacBook Air can last up to eight hours with light web browsing. While not exactly a bad number, that falls well short of Huawei’s MateBook X Pro, which managed 9.5 hours in our test.

If you’re determined to buy a MacBook but don’t want to shell out too much money, then the MacBook Air is for you. It’s a well-rounded portable laptop that boasts a solid performance and premium build quality. Get the latest version of the MacBook Air for $900.

The MacBook Pro 15 looks almost exactly like its 2017 and 2016 predecessors, save for one significant hardware upgrade: Its keyboard. One of the things we disliked about the older model was its low-travel keyboard, which left users feeling like they were typing on a block of wood. Thankfully, Apple has gone a long way toward fixing this issue. The keys now have a softer feel and they’re no longer obnoxiously loud. Overall, typing has become a more pleasurable experience.

As usual, the MacBook Pro 15 offers industry-leading display and sound. The 15-inch screen is a thing of beauty, with Apple’s 16:10 aspect ratio (most laptop screens are 3:2) providing more vertical space for a fuller view of your work. Colors are extremely accurate, black levels are great, and images look completely natural, which makes this a great laptop for photographers and creative professionals. In fact, the MacBook Pro is our choice for the best laptop for photo editing. The same goes for its up-firing stereo speakers, which offer an incredibly loud room-filling sound that retains the richness of spoken words and the subtleties of music.

Unfortunately, the MacBook Pro 15 still lacks ports. There are four Thunderbolt 3 ports and a headphone jack. This decision may be forward-thinking as more and more peripheral devices are being outfitted with USB-C, but the lack of an SD card slot is odd since this is being marketed to creatives.

The MacBook Pro 15 now boasts more power courtesy of its Intel core i7 processor. With a jump up to six cores, we saw a huge boost in performance. The improvement is also down to Apple’s MacBook Pro software patch which fixed a throttling issue. You can open multiple heavy programs like Photoshop and Final Cut Pro X simultaneously and operation will remain glitch-free.

This laptop’s battery life is decent. Apple claims it can last 10 hours on a single charge, and we saw close to that in our high-definition video loop test. Web browsing was decidedly less impressive at eight hours. These numbers aren’t terrible, but we’ve seen better.

The MacBook Pro 15 is the most powerful MacBook yet and has been future-proofed through its port selection. It comes at a high cost, but if it is peerless performance you’re after, it won’t disappoint. Get one for a huge $450 off on Best Buy. Instead of its usual price of $2,400, get it for $1,950.

The XPS 13 is one attractive Ultrabook. Its anodized aluminum chassis comes in Alpine White, Rose Gold, or Platinum Silver that has a faint pearlescent sheen to it. The Dell logo sits solitary yet triumphant in the center of the lid. The webcam, long been derided as the “nosecam” because of its unfortunate placement at the bottom of the screen, has now migrated to its rightful place at the top center. It also happens to be the tiniest webcam we’ve ever seen, although it can still take a decent picture.

What’s more, the webcam is compatible with Windows Hello so you can log in with just your face. Outlining the screen is what Dell calls the InfinityEdge bezel, and it is beautifully scant and modern. With dimensions of 11.9 x 7.8 x 0.5 inches, this 2.7-pound laptop is super portable and would be the perfect partner of mobile professionals.

Do you need a second screen for your smartphone? Probably not, but somebody made one anyway. It’s pretty straightforward. The Castaway, as it’s called, is basically a tiny chromium tablet that’s tucked into a smartphone case. Put your phone in the case, and it’ll be linked to the tablet, thereby allowing you to use two apps at the same time.

Unfortunately, it’s damn near impossible to make bakery-quality bread in a standard kitchen oven — unless of course, you use something like Fourneau. It’s basically like a souped-up Dutch oven that creates the perfect environment for you to make artisan bread at home. This new version, the Fourneau Grande, is a larger version of the original, which gives you space to make specialty loaves that are longer, bigger, or oddly shaped.

In 2016, designer Clemens Steffin launched his ‘Universe in a Sphere’ project on Kickstarter, creating a glass orb containing 380,000 perfectly lasered dots, each one representing an entire galaxy. His next project then aimed to re-create just our very own galaxy, the Milky Way, with every dot representing a different star. Now he’s back with a bigger version of that idea, and it’s even more painstakingly detailed than before!

Trackers and other anti-theft devices for bicycles are a dime a dozen these days, but this one is different. Unlike most existing trackers (which either rely on cellular/GPS connections that comes with a monthly subscription fee, or weird proprietary networks that only work if everyone around you has the exact same tracker app), this one communicates with your phone via Narrowband IoT, which basically allows it to work like apple’s Find My iPhone utility, but without any subscriptions or service costs.

This one hasn’t actually launched yet, so we don’t know a lot about it — but based on the video footage available and the photos on the preview page, I think it’s pretty safe to assume that this thing is going to be awesome. It’s certainly not the first electric dirt bike that’s ever been made, but the fact that it’s from Segway, one of the best rideable tech manufacturers in the world, is exciting. Fingers crossed they sell it for an affordable price!

Just head over to Amazon and you’ll discover no shortage of pads, bags, and other sleeping solutions designed to keep your furry friend comfy. However, if you intend to take your dog along on a trip, then you’ll likely have a bit more trouble finding a suitable canine sleeping pad. The issue is that very few (if any) dog sleeping systems are designed to be compact and portable. They’re typically made with thick padding that doesn’t compress very easily, so they don’t fit nicely into a backpack. Rumpl decided to change that.
