The battery issues may very well only apply to a “limited number” of laptops, which is what the company almost always says when there’s a problem with its hardware. Apple sells millions of computers per year—18 million Macs were sold in 2018—so even a substantial number of impacted machines could still be considered “limited.” Call it a different kind of theory of relativity.

But the recall is not an isolated incident when it comes to modern versions of Apple’s premium, expensive laptops. The company’s laptops have been the subject of no fewer than five repair notices, including this latest recall, in the past year alone. (Apple has not yet responded to a request to comment on the record about the frequency of its repair and recall notices.) It’s a surprising number of issues for a product line that is emblematic of the company itself and, in the case of the MacBook Pro, one that Apple insists is the “world’s best pro notebook.”

June 22, 2018: Apple announces a free keyboard repair program. Complaints about the butterfly-switch keyboard on Apple’s newer laptops reached a crescendo in October 2017, when journalist Casey Johnston wrote a scathing report in The Outline about the issues she was having with her 2016 MacBook Pro’s faulty keyboard.

It took Apple several months to address the problem in any real way, but in June of last year the company said it was introducing a “keyboard service program for our customers that covers a small percentage of keyboards in certain MacBook and MacBook Pro models, which may exhibit one or more of the following behaviors: letters or characters that repeat unexpectedly or don’t appear when pressed or keys that feel ‘sticky’ or aren’t responding in a consistent manner.”

The repair option was available to owners of nine different models of MacBooks and MacBook Pros, including MacBooks going back to 2015 and MacBook Pros dating back to 2016. Apple said at the time that it was only a “small percentage of keyboards in certain MacBook and MacBook Pro models.”

June 27, 2018: Apple offers free battery replacements for faulty 13-inch MacBook Pros. This one didn’t suck up as much attention in the tech news cycle, but less than a week later Apple said that a component failure could cause built-in batteries to expand, and as such, 13-inch MacBook Pros sans TouchBars were eligible for free battery swaps. But this only applied to older laptops, ones manufactured between October 2016 and October 2017, and Apple said that it only impacts “a limited number of 13-inch MacBook Pro (non Touch Bar) units.”

November 12, 2018: Apple announces a solid-state drive replacement program. On this particular day in the year of two thousand and eighteen, Apple acknowledged that some 13-inch MacBook Pro models were having issues “that may result in data loss and failure of the drive.” As a result, it would replace solid-state drives for free.

Again, these were 13-inch MacBook Pros without Touch Bars; the affected units were sold between June 2017 and June 2018. In the notice that went out about this, Apple also strongly recommended that users make a backup of their laptop data before taking it in for service. But backing up a laptop requires some form of external storage—either a physical drive or a cloud storage account, neither of which are free—and users were left to figure that out on their own.

Apple said at the time that the issue affects “a limited number of 128GB and 256GB solid-state drives.” (Reader, my own personal laptop is one of the affected ones here. I just can’t bring myself to deal with the Apple Store at this point in time.)

May 21, 2019: Apple expands its repair program. Things were quiet on the MacBook front for a while, and then in March 2019 The Wall Street Journal columnist Joanna Stern wrote an entire column with letters missing as a result of her faulty MacBook Pro keyboard.

On May 21, as part of a larger MacBook Pro refresh, Apple said it was expanding its keyboard repair program. The just-announced laptops are still using Apple’s third-generation butterfly-switch keyboard, but the keyboards on the newest models have some physical material changes that the company said would address some of the issues people had been experiencing. (An iFixit teardown later revealed what some of these material changes might be.)

The batteries were also sold as accessories or provided as replacements from December 2015 through December 2018 for the above products, as well as additional products through HP or an authorized HP Service Provider, including certain HP Mobile Thin Client products.Many of these batteries are internal to the system, which means they are not customer-replaceable. HP is providing battery replacement services by an authorized technician at no cost.

The problem: According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s January 2018 report on the initial recall, HP had received eight reports of batteries overheating, melting, or charring. The malfunctioning batteries resulted in three incidents of property damage totaling $1,500 and a single first-degree burn to the hand.The fix: To determine whether a particular battery is affected, go to HP’s website and download the utility, which will identify recalled batteries.

If a battery is affected, the next step is to install a BIOS update that places the battery in Battery Safety Mode so that the notebook or workstation can be safely used without the battery by connecting to an HP power adapter. Battery Safety Mode causes the battery to discharge and disables future charging.Even though the government shutdown ended more than a month and a half ago, we’re still feeling its effects. That’s because, despite HP issuing an expansion for a battery recall back in January, the notice wasn’t posted to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website until earlier this week due to the shutdown.

HP’s latest battery woes actually stem back to a recall covering 50,000 affected units first issued in January 2018, which was then expanded earlier this year to include another 78,500 or so at-risk systems and battery accessories. Meanwhile, on the most recent recall alert posted by the CPSC on March 12th, a note at the top of the CPSC website says “This recall expansion was previously announced independently on January 17, 2019 by the firm due to US government furlough.”

HP’s laptop battery recall primarily affects a number of the company’s commercial notebooks including various HP ProBooks and HP ZBook workstations, though there are a few consumer laptops mixed in there such as the 11-inch HP Pavilion x360 and HP Envy m6. Some recalled batteries were also sold as accessories or replacement batteries for existing laptops for systems such as the HP Envy 15 and assorted HP Mobile Thin Clients.So far, the CPSC says HP has received eight new reports of these faulty battery overheating, melting, and charring, with one instance of a recalled battery causing minor injury.

Consumers with laptop batteries who think they might be subject to recall are asked to go to this website and download HP’s Battery Validation tool to check if their battery needs to be replaced, as some of the systems affected by the recall have internal batteries that are not user replaceable.HP says it is also trying to proactively notify customers, and if a battery is determined to be part of the recall, HP says owners should stop using the system immediately and put the system in Battery Safety Mode via HP’s BIOS update. From there HP will provide free battery replacement for affected units.

Earlier today Apple announced a recall for some of its MacBook Pro laptops because of problematic and potentially hazardous batteries. The batteries, according to Apple’s support page, “may overheat and pose a fire safety risk.” The recall is said to affect 15-inch MacBook Pros with Retina displays sold between September 2015 and February 2017, and Apple is replacing batteries for free on eligible laptops.

Die Erwärmung hält sich größtenteils in Grenzen. Allerdings messen wir während des Stresstests und bei der Durchführung des Witcher-3-Tests (das Spiel läuft 1 Stunde in Full-HD-Auflösung und maximalen Qualitätseinstellungen) Temperaturen um bzw. über 50 Grad Celsius an zwei Messpunkten. In beiden Szenarien fällt die Erwärmung nahezu identisch aus. Auf den Oberschenkeln sollte das Gerät nicht abgestellt werden. Im Leerlauf liegen die Temperaturen klar im grünen Bereich.

Die Stereolautsprecher des Pavilion 15 haben ihren Platz oberhalb der Tastatur hinter einer gelochten Abdeckung gefunden. Sie produzieren einen sehr ordentlichen Klang, dem auch längere Zeit zugehört werden kann. Allerdings fehlt es an Bass. Für ein besseres Klangerlebnis empfiehlt sich die Nutzung von Kopfhörern oder externen Lautsprechern.

Der Energiebedarf bewegt sich über den gesamten Lastbereich hinweg auf einem normalen Niveau für die hier verbaute Hardware. Im Leerlauf registrieren wir eine maximale Leistungsaufnahme von 12,5 Watt. Während unseres Stresstests steigt der Bedarf auf bis zu 191,5 Watt. Im Gaming-Betrieb fällt der Bedarf niedriger aus. So messen wir während der Durchführung unseres Witcher-3-Tests eine Leistungsaufnahme von etwa 121 Watt. Die Nennleistung des Netzteils beträgt 200 Watt.

Das Gaming Pavilion 15 bringt es in unserem praxisnahen WLAN-Test auf eine Laufzeit von 4:50 h. Wir simulieren hier mittels eines Skripts die Belastung beim Aufruf von Webseiten. Das Profil "Ausbalanciert" ist aktiv und die Displayhelligkeit wird auf etwa 150 cd/m² geregelt. Unseren Videotest beendet der 15,6-Zöller nach 5:17 h. Hierbei lassen wir den Kurzfilm Big Buck Bunny (H.264-Kodierung, 1.920 x 1.080 Pixel) in einer Dauerschleife laufen. Das Profil "Energiesparmodus" ist aktiv, das Funkmodul ist deaktiviert und die Displayhelligkeit wird auf 150 cd/m² gesenkt.

Alles in allem können die Akkulaufzeiten keine Begeisterung auslösen, gehen für ein Gaming-Notebook aber in Ordnung. Nichtsdestotrotz hätten wir erwartet, dass das Notebook noch etwas mehr Laufzeit aus dem 52,5-Wh-Akku herausholt.Das HP Gaming Pavilion 15 macht, was es machen soll: Es bringt alle aktuellen Spiele flüssig auf den matten Bildschirm. Core-i7-9750H-Prozessor und GeForce-GTX-1660-Ti-Max-Q-GPU machen es möglich. Positiv: Das Notebook erzeugt über den gesamten Lastbereich hinweg nicht übermäßig viel Lärm - das gilt auch für den Gaming-Betrieb.

Eine schnelle NVMe-SSD sorgt für ein flink und flüssig laufendes System. Auch wenn die SSD insgesamt nur eine Kapazität von 256 GB zu bieten hat, mangelt es dem Notebook nicht an Speicherplatz. Es steckt zusätzlich eine 1-TB-Festplatte in dem Rechner. Beide Speichermedien können getauscht werden. Das würde eine Öffnung des Gehäuses erfordern.

Um ein Laufzeitwunder handelt es beim Pavilion nicht. Die Akkulaufzeiten fallen für ein Gaming-Notebook ganz ordentlich aus. Die Chiclet-Tastatur hat sich als alltagstauglich erwiesen. Gut: Eine Beleuchtung ist vorhanden. Das Gerät bietet grundsätzlich ein rundes Schnittstellenangebot. Allerdings vermissen wir einen Thunderbolt-3-Steckplatz. Leider gewährt HP dem Rechner nur eine einjährige Garantie - zu wenig für ein 1.400-Euro-Notebook.

AMD sorgt weiterhin für spannende Zeiten: Mit den neuen Ryzen-3000-APUs hat sich erstmals seit Jahren ein AMD-Notebook an die Spitze unserer Bestenlisten geschwungen. Und das scheint kein Einzelfall zu bleiben, denn das Unternehmen setzt auf alte Stärken, während es Schwächen ausbügelt. Aber Intel schläft nicht.

Der letzte Vergleich der CPU-Riesen im Mobilsegment ist noch gar nicht so lange her: 2018 haben wir AMDs Mobile Ryzen gegen Intels Kaby-Lake-Refresh antreten lassen, mit eindeutigem Ergebnis: Ryzen bietet zwar durchaus Performance, die Intel schlägt, aber hat dabei quasi geschummelt. Denn die "mobilen" Prozessoren saugten so schnell Strom aus dem Akku oder pumpten Gewicht und Format der Notebooks dermaßen auf, dass es sich eher um Desktop-Rechner mit angetackertem Bildschirm handelte. Ganz klar: Die Prozessoren waren am Markt vorbei entwickelt. Das zeigte sich auch im Handel, denn wer einen AMD-Laptop suchte, musste dafür die Lupe zur Hand nehmen. Intel konnte weiterhin auf ihrem Monopol hocken, gemütlich den technologischen Vorsprung ausbauen und fleißig das Geld zählen.

Das war insofern ernüchternd, als dass AMD mit den Desktop-CPUs gigantische Fortschritte gemacht und in der zweiten Generation mit Zen+-Architektur Intel rechts überholen konnte (Ryzen 7 2700X im Test). Die Prozessoren konnten nicht nur mit Core i7 & Co. auf Augenhöhe boxen, sondern haben sie regelmäßig geschlagen – bei geringeren Preisen und guter Effizienz. Gerade diese Effizienz hat Hoffnung darauf gemacht, dass AMD nun auch ins Notebooksegment einbricht und dort den Markt ordentlich aufwirbelt, was natürlich den Kunden und Kundinnen zugute kommt. Ohne Konkurrenz kriegt schließlich niemand die besten Preise – außer der Marktbeherrscher.

Das alles scheint nun rasant Vergangenheit zu werden: Die Ryzen-3000-Serie mit Zen-2-Architektur ist gerade dabei, Intel in allen Kategorien vernichtend zu schlagen (alle CPUs im Test). Teil der Rechnung ist AMDs unerwartete Überholung bei der Fertigungstechnik. Denn während das Unternehmen dieses Jahr schon mit einer Strukturbreite von 7 Nanometern an den Start ging, kommen Intels Desktop-Prozessoren vermutlich frühstens 2020 auf den Markt – mit 10 Nanometern. Diese ist zwar kein definitives Benchmark für die Güte einer CPU, bietet aber Potenzial – entweder für mehr Transistoren auf gleicher Chipfläche oder gleich viele Transistoren auf kleinerer Chipfläche. Die erste Variante steigert die Leistung, die zweite die Effizienz, was gerade Mobilgeräten zugute kommt.

Und da kommen die neuen Ryzen-Mobilprozessoren ins Spiel – und gleich mit einem Paukenschlag. Ein Notebook hat sich beispielsweise sofort an die Spitze unserer Bestenliste der Geräte bis 500 Euro gesetzt. Das HP-Notebook bot zum Testzeitpunkt in seiner Sparte nicht nur die beste Leistung, sondern war puncto Mobilität immerhin befriedigend und nicht mehr grottenschlecht. Außerdem war das HP 15-db1002ng (siehe Video oben) mit rund 450 Euro spitzenmäßig bepreist. (Anmerkung: Inzwischen ist das Modell, vermutlich wegen erhöhter Nachfrage, 100 Euro teurer geworden und steht nun in unserer Bestenliste ab 500 Euro).

Den für ein Gaming-Notebook nötigen Speicherplatz stellt eine 2,5-Zoll-Festplatte (Seagate Barracuda Pro) mit einem Fassungsvermögen von 1 TB bereit. Sie arbeitet mit 7.200 Umdrehungen pro Minute.Die GPU gehört der oberen Mittelklasse an und basiert auf der Turing-Architektur. Im Gegensatz zu den Turing-GPUs der RTX-2000-Reihe bietet die GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q keine Raytracing- und kein Tensor-Kerne. Die im Prozessor integrierte UHD-Graphics-630-GPU ist aktiv, und das Notebook arbeitet mit Nvidias Umschaltgrafiklösung Optimus.

Die GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q unterstützt DirectX 12 und arbeitet mit einer Basisgeschwindigkeit von 1.140 MHz. Per Boost ist eine Steigerung auf bis zu 1.335 MHz möglich. Es können allerdings auch höhere Geschwindigkeiten erreicht werden, wenn die GPU eine festgelegte Temperatur- und/oder Energieschwelle nicht erreicht. So registrieren wir ein Maximum von 1.500 MHz, das allerdings nur kurz gehalten werden kann. Der Witcher-3-Test wird mit einer Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit von 1.377 MHz durchlaufen. Die GPU kann dabei auf schnellen GDDR6-Grafikspeicher (6.144 GB) zurückgreifen.

Die Resultate in den 3D-Mark-Benchmarks bewegen sich auf einem normalen Niveau für diese GPU. Sie positioniert sich knapp vor der GTX 1060. Im Akkubetrieb steht weniger als die Hälfte der Grafikleistung zur Verfügung.Die Hardware des Pavilion kann alle aktuellen Spiele in Full-HD-Auflösung und mit hohen bis teilweise maximalen Qualitätseinstellungen flüssig auf den Bildschirm bringen. Auflösungen jenseits von Full HD bewältigt die verbaute GPU in erster Linie im Zusammenspiel mit Spielen, die schon ein paar Jahre auf dem Buckel haben bzw. keine allzu hohen Anforderungen an die Hardware stellen.

Ein Gaming-Notebook muss über einen längeren Zeitraum weitgehend konstante Bildwiederholraten auf einem spielbaren Niveau liefern können. Ob HPs 15,6-Zöller dazu in der Lage ist, überprüfen wir, indem wir das Spiel "The Witcher 3" für etwa 60 Minuten mit Full-HD-Auflösung und maximalen Qualitätseinstellungen laufen lassen. Der vom Spieler verkörperte Charakter wird dabei über den gesamten Zeitraum nicht bewegt. Ein Einbruch der Bildwiederholraten ist nicht festzustellen.

Auch das Gaming Pavilion 15 gehört zu den HP-Notebooks bei denen die HP eigene BIOS-Option "Fan always on" (Lüfter immer an) aktiviert ist. Somit arbeiten die Lüfter auch im Leerlauf permanent. Wirklich zu hören sind sie dabei aber nicht. Wir messen einen maximalen Schalldruckpegel von 29,3 dB(A). Würde die BIOS-Option deaktiviert werden, stünden die Lüfter auch mal still. Lautlosigkeit würde dann aber nur herrschen, wenn nicht auf die 2,5-Zoll-Festplatte zugegriffen würde. Ihr Rauschen ist zu hören.

Auch unter Last lassen es die beiden Lüfter verhältnismäßig moderat angehen. Während des Stresstests registrieren wir einen maximalen Schalldruckpegel von 41,2 dB(A) - ein guter Wert für ein Gaming-Notebook. Im Gaming-Betrieb geht das Notebook leiser zu Werke. So liegt der Pegel während des Witcher-3-Tests bei 34 dB(A), bei CPU-lastigeren Spielen steigt er auf bis zu 37,3 dB(A). Alles in allem steht das Notebook seinem 17,3-Zoll-Schwestermodell in Sachen Lärmentwicklung in nichts nach.

Unseren Stresstest (Prime95 und FurMark laufen für mindestens eine Stunde) durchläuft das Gaming Notebook im Netz- und im Akkubetrieb auf unterschiedliche Weisen. Zu Beginn des Tests arbeitet der Prozessor mit 2,5 bis 2,6 GHz. In den ersten zehn Minuten des Tests sinkt der Takt auf 2 bis 2,1 GHz und verbleibt für die restliche Dauer des Tests auf diesem Niveau. Der Grafikkern erreicht anfänglich Geschwindigkeiten zwischen 1.000 und 1.100 MHz. Während der CPU-Takt in den ersten Minuten des Tests sinkt, steigt der GPU-Takt auf 1.290 MHz und verbleibt auf diesem Niveau. Im Akkubetrieb liegen die Arbeitsgeschwindigkeiten bei 800 bis 1.200 MHz (CPU) bzw. 1.000 bis 1.100 MHz (GPU). Der Stresstest stellt ein Extremszenario dar, welches so im Alltag nicht auftritt. Wir überprüfen mit diesem Test, ob das System auch bei voller Auslastung stabil läuft.

Durch das von uns bereitgestellte Farbprofil kann die Farbdarstellung des Bildschirms entsprechend unserer Kalibrierung angepasst werden. Im Falle des HP Notebooks ist dies - wie sich gezeigt hat - unnötig. Falls das Vorhaben dennoch durchgeführt wird, gilt es darauf zu achten, dass das gleiche Displaymodell (Hersteller + Modellnummer) verbaut ist wie in unserem Testgerät. Ansonsten kann sich die Farbdarstellung verschlechtern. Es kommen innerhalb einer Notebook-Modellreihe oftmals Bildschirme verschiedener Hersteller zum Einsatz.

HP hat mit dem Gaming Pavilion 15 ein 15,6-Zoll-Gaming-Notebook im Sortiment. Es bringt jedes aktuelle Spiel flüssig auf den Bildschirm und gibt auch in allen anderen Anwendungsbereichen eine gute Figur ab. Für unser Testgerät müssen etwa 1.400 Euro hingelegt werden. Andere Ausstattungsvarianten sind verfügbar. Das zum Testzeitpunkt günstigste Modell ist für knapp 700 Euro zu haben. Es ist mit einem Core-i5-9300H-Prozessor und einer GeForce-GTX-1050-GPU bestückt.

HP stattet das Notebook mit einem Core-i7-9750H-Sechskernprozessor (Coffee Lake Refresh) der Firma Intel aus. Eine passende Wahl für ein kompaktes Gaming-Notebook, denn die CPU stellt einen guten Kompromiss aus Leistung, Energiebedarf und Einkaufspreis dar. Entsprechend treffen wir den Prozessor in vielen Gaming-Notebooks an. Der 9750H arbeitet mit einer Basisgeschwindigkeit von 2,6 GHz. Per Turbo kann der Takt auf 4 GHz (sechs Kerne), 4,1 GHz (fünf Kerne), 4,2 GHz (vier Kerne), 4,3 GHz (drei Kerne), 4,4 GHz (zwei Kerne) bzw. 4,5 GHz (ein Kern) gesteigert werden.

Den Multi-Thread-Test des Cinebench R15 bearbeitet der Prozessor kurzzeitig mit 4 GHz. Dann sinkt der Takt auf 3 bis 3,3 GHz. Der Single-Thread-Test wird mit 4,0 bis 4,5 GHz absolviert. Soweit das Verhalten im Netzbetrieb. Im Akkubetrieb liegen die Geschwindigkeiten bei 2,5 bis 2,9 GHz (Multi-Thread) bzw. 2,5 bis 4,5 GHz (Single-Thread).

Ob der CPU-Turbo im Netzbetrieb auch dauerhaft genutzt wird, überprüfen wir, indem wir den Multi-Thread-Test des Cinebench R15 für mindestens 30 Minuten in einer Dauerschleife laufen lassen. Die Resultate fallen vom ersten zum zweiten Durchgang hin um gut 10 Prozent ab und verbleiben dann auf einem konstanten Niveau. Der Turbo kommt zum Einsatz, arbeitet aber nicht mit voller Kraft.

Die Resultate der CB15-Schleife enttäuschen etwas. Das HP Notebook schneidet hier klar schlechter ab als die ebenfalls mit Sechskernprozessoren bestückten Konkurrenten. Das scheint auch seitens HP so vorgesehen zu sein. Das mit der gleichen CPU-GPU-Kombination bestückte 17,3-Zoll-Schwestermodell liefert ähnliche Werte.

Schon ein Blick auf die Ausstattungsliste verrät, dass es dem Gaming Pavilion nicht an Systemleistung mangelt. Ein starker Sechskernprozessor, im Dual-Channel-Modus laufender Arbeitsspeicher und eine schnelle NVMe-SSD sorgen für ein flink und flüssig arbeitendes System. Dazu gesellt sich eine Mittelklasse-GPU, die alle aktuellen Computerspiele auf den Bildschirm bringen kann. Die sehr guten Resultate in den PC-Mark-Benchmarks bescheinigen dem Notebook, dass es genug Rechenleistung auch für Anwendungen jenseits des Gamings bietet.

Als Systemlaufwerk dient eine NVMe-SSD aus dem Hause Samsung. Es handelt sich um ein Modell im M.2-2280-Format, das 256 GB Speicherplatz bietet. Im Auslieferungszustand sind davon etwa 200 GB nutzbar. Der restliche Speicherplatz wird von der Recovery Partition und der Windows Installation belegt. Dank ihrer Anbindung per PCI Express liefert die SSD hervorragende Transferraten. Diese fallen bei NVMe-Speichermedien deutlich höher aus als bei SATA-III-Modellen (max. 600 MB/s).

Das HP Gaming Notebook wartet insgesamt mit einer runden Schnittstellenauswahl auf. Alle drei Typ-A-USB-Steckplätze arbeiten nach dem USB-3.2-Gen-1-Standard, der Typ-C-USB-Anschluss nach dem USB-3.2-Gen-2-Standard. Letzterer unterstützt Displayport-per-USB-C (hierfür wird ein separat zu erwerbender Adapter benötigt). Dazu gesellen sich ein HDMI-2.0-Ausgang, ein Audiokomboanschluss, ein Gigabit-Ethernet-Steckplatz und eine Öffnung für ein Kabelschloss. Die Steckplätze befinden sich in den hinteren Bereichen der rechten und linken Seite. Eine Behinderung der Maus-Nutzung durch Kabel ist eher unwahrscheinlich.

Wir hätten einen Thunderbolt-3-Steckplatz einem USB-3.2-Gen-2-Anschluss vorgezogen. Dieser sollte bei einem Gaming-Notebook der hier vorliegenden Preisklasse zur Standardausstattung zählen. Er würde die Möglichkeit eröffnen eine leistungsfähigere, externe GPU anzustöpseln.Der Speicherkartenleser nimmt SD-Karten komplett auf; sie ragen nicht heraus. Zudem werden diese im Lesegerät arretiert. Das hier verbaute Lesegerät gehört zu den schnelleren Vertretern seiner Art. Beim Kopieren großer Datenblöcke wird eine maximale Transferrate von 77,6 MB/s erreicht. Die Übertragung von 250 jpg-Bilddateien (je rund 5 MB) wird mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 74,1 MB/s absolviert. Wir testen Speicherkartenleser mittels einer Referenzkarte (Toshiba Exceria Pro SDXC 64 GB UHS-II).

Das WLAN-Modul trägt einen Chip der Firma Realtek (RTL8822BE). Dieser unterstützt neben den WLAN-Standards 802.11 a/b/g/n auch den schnellen ac-Standard. Zudem bietet er Bluetooth-4.2-Funktionalität. Die von uns unter optimalen Bedingungen (keine weiteren WLAN-Geräte in der näheren Umgebung, geringer Abstand zwischen Notebook und Server-PC) ermittelten Übertragungsgeschwindigkeiten fallen gut aus. HP setzt auf zwei Antennen. Drahtgebundene Netzwerkverbindungen wickelt ein Gigabit-Ethernet-Chip aus Realteks bekannter RTL8168/8111-Familie ab. Dieser erledigt seine Aufgaben reibungslos.

Eine Wartungsklappe hat das Notebook nicht zu bieten. Um an die Innereien zu gelangen, müsste die Unterschale demontiert werden. Dazu werden alle Schrauben auf der Geräteunterseite entfernt. Anschließend kann die Unterschale mit Hilfe eines flachen Spatels abgelöst werden. Hierbei muss mit Fingerspitzengefühl vorgegangen werden, da die sie haltenden Klammern recht fest sitzen. Anschließend besteht Zugriff auf die gesamte Hardware.

Den Rotstift hat HP bei der Garantie angesetzt. Das Gaming Pavilion verfügt nur über eine nicht zeitgemäße, einjährige Garantie. Umfang und Zeitraum können aber in Form sogenannter Care Packs erweitert werden. HP hält zwei Care Packs für das Notebook bereit: Eine zwei- bzw. dreijährige Garantie wäre für 50 bzw. 65 Euro zu bekommen - inklusive Abhol- und Lieferservice.

Hewlett Packard stattet den 15,6-Zöller mit einer Chiclet-Tastatur aus. Die Haupttasten verfügen über Ausmaße von 15 x 15 mm und sind gut voneinander unterscheidbar. Die leichtgängigen Tasten bieten insgesamt einen mittleren Hub und einen klaren Druckpunkt. Der Widerstand dürfte für unseren Geschmack allerdings knackiger ausfallen. Während des Tippens gibt die Tastatur in der Mitte etwas nach. Als störend hat es sich nicht erwiesen. Die einfarbige Tastenbeleuchtung bietet zwei Helligkeitsstufen, die mittels einer Funktionstaste gewählt werden können. Alles in allem liefert HP hier eine alltagstaugliche Tastatur.

Touchpad

Das multitouchfähige Clickpad belegt eine Fläche von etwa 11,4 x 5 cm. Somit mangelt es nicht an Platz zur Nutzung der Gestensteuerung. Die glatte Oberfläche behindert die Finger nicht beim Gleiten. Das Pad reagiert präzise auf Eingaben - auch in den Ecken. Mechanische Klicks quittiert das Pad mit einem deutlich hör- und fühlbaren Druckpunkt.

Das Display des Gaming Pavilion arbeitet mit einer nativen Auflösung von 1.920 x 1.080 Bildpunkten. Mit einer Helligkeit von 324 cd/m² hat das HP Notebook den hellsten Bildschirm innerhalb unseres Vergleichsfeldes an Bord. Der Kontrast (821:1) fällt akzeptabel aus, sollte bei einem Notebook der hier vorliegenden Preisklasse jedoch jenseits von 1000:1 liegen. Es handelt sich bei dem hier verbauten Panel um ein 144-Hz-Modell, das mit guten Reaktionszeiten aufwartet. Positiv: Das Display zeigt kein PWM-Flimmern.

Der Bildschirm ist bereits im Auslieferungszustand sehr gut kalibriert und punktet mit einer tollen Farbdarstellung. Mit einer DeltaE-2000-Farbabweichung von 1,3 wird das Soll (DeltaE kleiner 3) voll erfüllt. Darüber hinaus leidet das Display nicht unter einem Blaustich. Mittels einer von uns durchgeführten Kalibrierung konnten wir nur eine minimale Verbesserung erreichen. So sinkt die Farbabweichung auf einen Wert von 1,1 und die Graustufen werden noch ausgewogener dargestellt. Der Unterschied ist für den Nutzer nicht zu erkennen. Die Farbräume AdobeRGB und sRGB werden nicht vollständig abgebildet. Hier liegen die Abdeckungsraten bei 60,5 Prozent (AdobeRGB) bzw. 94,9 Prozent (sRGB).

Unter Volllast verhält sich das Gerät sehr leise und lässt keine störenden Beigeräusche hören. Der allgemeine Qualitätseindruck des Gehäuses ist wie bereits erwähnt hochwertig, auch beim Transport fühlt sich das Notebook sehr stabil an. Das Display lässt sich problemlos mit einer Hand öffnen. Durch die besonderen Problemchen der Importversion wurde es am Ende nicht ganz eine Note Zwei, sondern nur ein „befriedigend“. Dennoch lässt sich mit dem Mi Air gut arbeiten.

Als 13-Zoll-Notebook mit dünnen und kompakten Abmessungen und einem geringen Gewicht von 1,3 Kilogramm eignet sich das Xiaomi Mi Air als praktischer Alltagsbegleiter. Bei der Akkulaufzeit sieht es nicht ganz so gut aus, aber immer noch zufriedenstellend. Der 40-Wattstunden-Akku ist etwas knapp bemessen und so hält das Notebook im Videotest 06:28 Stunden und im simulierten Workload-Test 04:13 Stunden durch. Das ist Durchschnitt, mit den 9- und 6-Stunden-Knüllern in unserer Bestenliste kann das Xiaomi-Notebook nicht mithalten. Die Mobilität bekommt von uns dennoch die Note „gut“.

Ein zu hoher Preis für ein Gerät des Preis-Leistungs-Experten

Bei den Smartphones glänzt Xiaomi regelmäßig mit einem super Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Dem Import-Notebook Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3, das eigentlich nicht für den deutschen Markt gedacht ist, gelingt das Kunststück nicht. Das Mi Air gibt es zum Testzeitpunkt für rund 1.000 Euro (zum Preisvergleich) und das auch nur eingeschränkt. Um die Verfügbarkeit des Xiaomi-Notebooks steht es hierzulande nämlich nicht allzu gut, es gibt Wartezeiten von mehreren Wochen. Und letztendlich ist der Preis von 1.000 Euro für die gebotene Leistung auch ziemlich hoch. Im Preis-Leistungs-Vergleich in unserer Bestenliste bekommt das Mi Air damit gerade noch die Preiseinschätzung „akzeptabel“.

Die Hardware des HP Gaming Pavilion 15 pinselt alle aktuellen Computerspiele flüssig auf den matten 15,6-Zoll-Bildschirm (FHD, 144 Hz, IPS). Positiv: Das Gerät erzeugt dabei nicht übermäßig viel Lärm. Auch die Ausstattung stimmt: 16 GB Arbeitsspeicher (Dual-Channel-Modus), NVMe-SSD und 1-TB-HDD.

Hewlett Packard hat mit der Gaming-Pavilion-Reihe eine Serie von Gaming-Notebooks im Sortiment. Die Reihe ist unterhalb der HP-Omen-Serie angeordnet und soll mit einem guten Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis aufwarten. So sind die Pavilion-Modelle nur mit GPUs der Mittelklasse (GTX 1050 bis GTX 1660 Ti) zu bekommen. Die GPU-Oberklasse (GeForce RTX) ist den Omen-Modellen vorbehalten. Unser Testgerät wird von einem Core-i7-9750H-Prozessor und einer GeForce-GTX-1660-Ti-Max-Q-GPU angetrieben. Wir haben vor kurzem bereits das mit der gleichen Hardware bestückte 17,3-Zoll-Schwestermodell getestet.

Das uns zur Verfügung gestellte Gaming-Pavilion-15-Modell ist aktuell für etwa 1.400 Euro zu bekommen. Innerhalb unserer Datenbank zählen damit Notebooks wie das Dell G5 15 5590, das CUK Model Z GK5CQ7Z, das Asus ROG GA502DU, das Lenovo Legion Y530-15ICH und das Medion Erazer X6805-MD61085 zur Konkurrenz.Hewlett Packard verwendet beim Gaming Pavilion ein neues Gehäuse. Nichtsdestotrotz ist doch eine gewisse Verwandtschaft mit dem Gehäuse des Vorgängermodells zu erkennen. Das komplette Gehäuse unseres aktuellen Testgeräts ist aus mattem, schwarzem Kunststoff (Shadow Black) gefertigt. Farbliche Akzente setzt HP mit der grünen Tastenbeleuchtung und einem grün-glänzendem HP-Logo auf der Deckelrückseite. Das auffälligste Design-Merkmal stellen die Luftauslassöffnungen auf der Rückseite dar. Der Akku ist fest verbaut. Eine Wartungsklappe hat das Notebook nicht zu bieten. Um an die Innereien zu gelangen, müsste das Gehäuse geöffnet werden. Dazu später mehr.

Verarbeitungsmängel offenbart der 15,6-Zöller nicht. Die Spaltmaße stimmen und Materialüberstände sind nicht aufzuspüren. Kritik gebührt allerdings den beiden unteren Ecken des Deckels als auch den Ecken, die sich an den Erhebungen der Luftauslassöffnungen befinden (siehe Bild). Diese fallen sehr spitz aus. Hier besteht Verletzungsgefahr.

Auf Seiten der Stabilität gibt es nichts Großartiges zu bemängeln. So gibt die Baseunit neben beiden Seiten der Tastatur und unterhalb des Touchpads etwas nach - das Ganze bewegt sich aber noch im Rahmen. Das gilt auch für die Steifigkeit der Baseunit. Der Deckel hingegen kann zu leicht verdreht werden. Immerhin führt Druck auf die Deckelrückseite nicht zu Bildveränderungen. Die mittig angeordneten Scharniere halten den Deckel fest in Position, wippen aber etwas nach. Eine Ein-Hand-Öffnung des Deckels ist möglich. Der maximale Öffnungswinkel beträgt etwa 130 Grad.

Hier gibt es jedoch ein Problem: Es existieren nämlich zwei Versionen des Nvidia GeForce MX150 – und welche Variante im eigenen Notebook eingebaut ist, erfährt man als Kunde nicht. Nur mit Hilfe von Hardwareanalyse-Tools sieht man, dass es eine „energieeffiziente“ Variante des Grafikchips gibt, ähnlich den Max-Q-Versionen der GTX- und RTX-Chips. Dieser Alternativ-MX150 mit der Kennung „1D12“ hat eine geringere Taktung und Speichergeschwindigkeit, wodurch die Leistung im Vergleich zum „Standard“-Chip um 20 Prozent geringer ist. Und dieser „langsame“ MX150 steckt im Mi Air.

Die Auswirkungen sind nicht sofort ersichtlich, da der Prozessor für solide Leistung in Multimedia- und Office-Anwendungen sorgt. Wer sich jedoch denkt, dass ein dedizierter Grafikchip dazu einlädt, das Notebook auch zum Zocken zu verwenden, wird überrascht sein: Wie unser Test zeigt, werden Ihnen in PC-Spielen 20 Prozent weniger Bilder pro Sekunde geboten als bei einem MX150 eigentlich zu erwarten sind. Auch Anwendungen wie Grafikbearbeitung können Einbußen zeigen. Grundsätzlich überzeugt die Leistung des Mi Air zwar, aber Sie bekommen genaugenommen weniger als beworben.

Das 13,3-Zoll-Display des Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3 hat viel Gutes und gehört qualitativ zum oberen Drittel unserer Bestenliste. Das IPS-LC-Panel überzeugt mit seiner guten Blickwinkel-Stabilität, also der maximalen Weite des horizontalen und vertikalen Winkels, aus dem Sie auf den Bildschirm blicken können und immer noch einen akzeptablen Kontrast bekommen. Die Maximalhelligkeit des Displays ist mit 301 Candela pro Quadratmeter sehr gut, der Schachbrett-Kontrast mit 188:1 ebenfalls solide.

Die Darstellung des Standard-RGB-Farbraums ist mit 92 Prozent üppig, auch der erweiterte Adobe-Farbraum ist mit 71 Prozent ausreichend abgedeckt. Sofern Sie nicht Profi-Grafikbearbeitung planen, brauchen Sie nicht zwingend mehr. Die Full-HD-Auflösung (1.920 mal 1.080 Pixel) auf der 13,3 Zoll großen Fläche sorgt für eine gute Pixeldichte und ein scharfes Bild. Um einen Touchscreen handelt es sich bei dem spiegelnden LC-Panel jedoch nicht. Insgesamt geben wir dem Display die Wertung „gut“.

Eher weniger erfreut waren wir über die Ausstattung. Fast hätten wir dem Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3 hier die Wertung „ausreichend“ verpasst, weil viel fehlt. Es reichte aber gerade noch für ein „befriedigend“. Der 256 GByte große SSD-Speicher ist zwar erfreulich, mehr gibt es aber nicht: keine HDD-Festplatte, kein optisches Laufwerk und keinen Slot für SD-Speicherkarten. Wenn Ihnen 256 GByte nicht reichen, können Sie nur eine externe Festplatte über USB anschließen. Hier gibt es aber das nächste Problem.

Neben zwei USB-3.0-Schnittstellen von Typ A gibt es zwar auch eine USB-C-Schnittstelle, doch diese ist quasi dreifach belegt: Der Akku des Mi Air wird über USB-C aufgeladen. Hängt das Gerät also am Strom, ist die Schnittstelle belegt. Durch die DisplayPort-Unterstützung lässt sich alternativ ein Monitor über USB-C anschließen, ansonsten müssen sie auf die HDMI-Schnittstelle ausweichen. Eine Klinkenbuchse für Kopfhörer und Mikrofon sowie eine 1-Megapixel-Webcam komplettieren das Angebot. Als Betriebssystem ist Windows 10 Home installiert. Das Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3 reiht sich in die Riege der Mittel- und Oberklasse-Notebooks ein, die sich bei der Ausstattung auf das „Wesentliche“ beschränken: Möglichst wenige Schnittstellen am Gehäuse sollen möglichst viele Aufgaben übernehmen. Das führt jedoch zu Engpässen, die wir negativ sehen.

Abgesehen von dem bereits erwähnten US-Layout der Tastatur mit unterschiedlicher Tastenbelegung und -form, gibt es an der Ergonomie des Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3 nichts Wesentliches auszusetzen. Die Oberfläche der Tastatur ist zwar etwas rutschig und der Hubweg der Tasten nicht allzu berauschend, der Gegendruck ist aber knackig und das Tippgefühl insgesamt in Ordnung. Es fehlt jedoch auch ein separater Nummernblock. Das Touchpad hat eine gläsern anmutende Oberfläche mit guter Haptik, aber ohne gesonderte Maustasten. Im Mausersatz integriert befindet sich ein Fingerabdruck-Sensor.

Eine Besonderheit des MacBook Pro ist die Touchbar: Statt Funktionstasten gibt es einen Mini-Touchscreen über der Tastatur, der sich an die Programme anpasst: Für Helligkeit und Lautstärke werden beispielsweise Schieberegler eingeblendet.Zusammen mit dem riesigen Touchpad – perfekt für die eingebaute Gestensteuerung von macOS – werden da nur wenige Nutzer einen eingebauten Touchscreen vermissen. Den gibt es bei Apple nur für Handys wie das iPhone XR oder Tablets wie das Apple iPad Pro 11

Das Apple MacBook Pro 2019 hat ein Top-Display

Das eingebaute Display ist top: gestochen scharf, sehr kontrastreich und mit guter Farbwiedergabe. Etwas überraschend: Das neue Display im MacBook Air 2019 arbeitet bei der Farbdarstellung noch genauer.Apple-typisch spiegelt die Hochglanzoberfläche des Displays recht deutlich. Das kann in heller Umgebung oder bei Deckenlampen nerven.

Ein Unterschied zu den teureren Modellen: Die beiden kleineren Varianten des MacBook Pro 2019 haben nur zwei statt vier USB-Anschlüsse im modernen USB-C-Format: Darüber kann das Notebook Strom tanken und bis zu zwei Monitore ansteuern – und zwar gleichzeitig.Für eine extrem schnelle Datenübertragung sorgt die eingebaute Thunderbolt-Technik, genau richtig für eine externe SSD wie die extrem schnelle Samsung X5. Dank USB-C passen aber auch günstigere, wenn auch nicht ganz so schnelle SSDs wie die Samsung Portable SSD T5 ran.

Das Notebook Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3 kann in unserem Test in vielen Bereichen überzeugen. Die Leistung ist klasse, das 13,3-Zoll-Display hochwertig und auch mit der Mobilität waren wir zufrieden. Einschränkungen gibt es jedoch bei der etwas dürftigen Ausstattung und bei der Ergonomie. Das Xiaomi-Notebook ist nämlich eigentlich gar nicht für den europäischen Markt gedacht und die Tastatur kommt mit einem US-Layout. Und leider ist das Import-Gerät auch recht teuer. Der chinesische Hersteller Xiaomi ist inzwischen mit vielen Produkten in Deutschland präsent, allem voran natürlich mit seinen starken Smartphones, aber auch mit Fitnesstrackern, Saugrobotern und Smart-Home-Zubehör. Xiaomi stellt ebenfalls Notebooks her, nur gibt es diese bisher noch nicht in einer europäischen Version. Wen die Produkte von Xiaomi bisher überzeugen konnte, der bekommt für rund 1.000 Euro (zum Preisvergleich) ein edel und hochwertig anmutendes Notebook mit guter Hardware. Den von Apple bekannten „Air“-Namen wählten die Chinesen nicht umsonst: Das Mi Air 13.3 ist betont schlicht gehalten, in einem exzellent verarbeiteten Aluminiumgehäuse mit toller Haptik. Dabei ist die Oberseite völlig glatt, im Gegensatz zu den meisten Herstellern hat Xiaomi nicht einmal ein Logo platziert. Natürlich ähnelt das Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3 optisch vielen aktuellen Mittel- und Oberklasse-Notebooks – was aber nichts Schlechtes ist.

Die Performance des Xiaomi Mi Air 13.3 ist gut, spielt aber in unserer Bestenliste der Notebooks über 500 Euro nicht ganz oben mit. Stellenweise hat der chinesische Hersteller ein wenig gespart. Der Intel-Mobilprozessor der achten Generation, der Intel Core i5-8250U, ist durchaus ansprechend und leistet gute Arbeit. Die 8 GByte Arbeitsspeicher sind in dieser Preisklasse fast Standard und steuern das Ihrige bei, damit Anwendungen flüssig und problemlos laufen. Und schließlich verspricht auch der dedizierte Grafikchip Nvidia GeForce MX150 auf den ersten Blick eine Leistungssteigerung.

Lenovo verpackt die Technik des Legion in ein durchgehend schwarz (Raven Black) gefärbtes Kunststoff-Gehäuse. Lenovo verzichtet auf optische Spielereien, so dass das Gerät auch im geschäftlichen Umfeld genutzt werden kann. Das auffälligste Designmerkmal stellt der versetzte Deckel dar. Er schließt nicht mit der Notebookrückseite ab, sondern sitzt gut 25 mm weiter vorn. Die Oberseite der Baseunit ist mit einer Gummierung versehen. Auf der Deckelrückseite findet sich eine Rillentextur. Positiv: Das Legion hat eine Wartungsklappe an Bord, die Zugriff auf die SSD, das HDD-Fach und den Arbeitsspeicher gewährt. Um den Akku zu erreichen, müsste die komplette Unterschale demontiert werden. Dazu später mehr.

Das Gehäuse des Y540-17IRH kann seine Verwandtschaft mit dem Gehäuse des Legion Y740-17ICH nicht verleugnen - sie sehen sich sehr ähnlich. Um die gleichen Chassis handelt es sich jedoch nicht. Das Y540-17IRH-Gehäuse fällt etwas kompakter aus. Gleichzeitig ist es einige Millimeter dicker. Beiden Geräten ist gemein, dass sie recht geringe Bauhöhen vorweisen können, gleichzeitig aber relativ große Grundflächen besitzen. Bei den Konkurrenten Schenker XMG Core 17 und MSI GP75 Leopard 9SD ist es umgekehrt.

Verarbeitungsmängel offenbart das Notebook nicht. Die Spaltmaße stimmen und es sind keine Materialüberstände aufzuspüren. In Sachen Stabilität erwarten wir mehr. So gibt die Baseunit auf Druck neben beiden Seiten der Tastatur nach - links stärker als rechts. Auch kann die Baseunit für unseren Geschmack etwas zu stark verdreht werden. Der Deckel kann noch stärker verwunden werden. Immerhin führt Druck auf das Cover nicht zu Bildveränderungen. Die Scharniere halten den Deckel fest in Position, wippen aber etwas nach. Eine Ein-Hand-Öffnung des Deckels ist möglich. Der maximale Öffnungswinkel beträgt 180 Grad.

Der Computer- und Druckerhersteller HP ruft derzeit den Akku von verschiedenen Laptops zurück. Die Akkus können überhitzen, für Kunden besteht so Verbrennungs- und Brandgefahr. Das berichtet die Seite "produktwarnung.eu".

Die Seite listet als möglicherweise betroffene Notebooks verschiedene Geräte. Unter anderem Versionen folgender HP-Notebooks: ProBook, ZBook, x360, Pavilion, ENVY und HP 11. HP-Kunden mit entsprechenden Notebooks können einen kostenlosen Ersatzakku anfordern. Derzeit stellt HP auch ein BIOS-Update bereit. Das entlädt den Akku bei den betroffenen Geräten, so dass ein Aufladen erst nach Akku-Tausch möglich ist.

Das neue MacBook Pro hat einen ordentlichen Sprung bei der Leistung gemacht. Dafür sorgt der neue Vierkern-Prozessor (Core i5-8257U), den Apple den beiden kleineren Pro-Modellen spendiert hat. Damit ist das Pro richtig fix und vor allem bei leistungshungrigen Programmen wie Photoshop deutlich schneller als das günstigere MacBook Air.

Spiele laufen auf dem Pro ebenfalls flüssiger, für leidenschaftliche Zocker ist es aber immer noch zu langsam: Bei Spielen schaffte es im Test selbst mit reduzierter Auflösung (1366x768 Pixel) nur 22 Bilder pro Sekunde.

Das Apple MacBook Pro 2019 ist ausdauernd und leise

Der neue Prozessor ist mit einer maximalen Leistungsaufnahme von 15 Watt ein besonders sparsames Vierkern-Modell – bislang schluckten Intels Vierkern-Modelle aus den leistungsstarken Core-Serien für Notebooks bereits in der U-Version bis zu 28 Watt, die stärkeren H-Modelle sogar bis zu 44 Watt.

Der geringere Stromverbrauch schont den Akku: Im Test hielt das MacBook Pro sechs Stunden mit einer Akkuladung durch. Zudem müssen die Lüfter seltener ran. Im Normalbetrieb ist das MacBook Pro kaum zu hören (Betriebsgeräusch 0,1 Sone). Nur unter Volllast drehen die Lüfter mit 4,0 Sone ordentlich auf.

Software. Lenovo continues to lead the market when it comes to eschewing crapware in its ThinkPad products. Aside from the sad junk that ships with Windows 10 Pro, the T490s is delightfully devoid of unnecessary fluff. There are a few innocuous third-party utilities for such things as the Intel graphics, Thunderbolt 3, the audio system, and the TrackPoint. And then Lenovo’s recently-updated Vantage app, which provides support services and driver downloads. That’s it.

Pricing and configurations. The Lenovo ThinkPad T490s starts at about $1200. For that price, you get Windows 10 Home, an Intel Core i5-8265U processor, 8 GB of RAM, a 128 GB M.2 PCIe-NVMe SSD, and a 14-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display that emits a relatively dull 240 nits of light. You can choose other configurations or customize to improve all of these components, up to Windows 10 Pro, an Intel Core i7-8665U vPro processor, 16 GB of RAM, a 1 TB OPAL 2.0 M.2 PCIe-NVMe SSD, and 500 nit IPS display with HDR for a price north of $2100. The review unit, with its Core i5 processor, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD, and 400-nit non-touch display retails for about $1800. But remember that Lenovo’s prices can fluctuate a lot, and various systems are often on sale.

Recommendations and conclusions. I’m not surprised to report that the ThinkPad T490s is a delight to use and travel with. It’s an excellent option for mobile professionals who desire the style of the X1 series but need more in the way of expansion. As a premium offering, you’ll pay top dollar for a T490s, but the device’s durability, style, and portability will make it a worthwhile investment. The ThinkPad T490s is highly recommended.

The 18650 cell has become a ubiquitous standard in the lithium battery world. From power drills to early Tesla vehicles, these compact cells power all manner of portable devices. A particularly common use is in laptop batteries, where they’re often built into a pack using the Smart Battery System. This creates a smart battery that can communicate and report on its own status. PackProbe is a software tool built to communicate with these batteries, and you might just find it comes in handy.

The code runs on the WiFi-enabled Arduino Yún by default, but can be easily modified to suit other Arduino platforms. Communicating over SMBus using the Arduino’s I2C hardware, it’s capable of working with the vast majority of laptop batteries out there which comply with the Smart Battery System. With that standard being minted in 1994, it’s spread far and wide these days.

It’s a great way to harvest not only the specifications and manufacturing details of your laptop battery pack, but also to check on the health of the battery. This can give a clear idea over whether the battery is still usable, as well as whether the cells are worth harvesting for those in the recycling business.Microsoft seems unable to catch a break with its Surface slab-tops: a software update appears to have broken Wi-Fi for some users, while bulging batteries cause grief for others.

Overcharging, manufacturing defects, and damage from a drop are among causes fingered in the case-warping failures, which can range from annoying to downright dangerous as gasses within the battery heat up, resulting in the thing attempting to make a break for it from its tight confines.

Case in point is the anonymous Register reader who got in touch regarding Microsoft's Surface fondleslab. A sucker for punishment, the chap had picked up both the underpowered Surface 3 and premium Surface Pro 3 within a few months of each other, doubtless warming the cockles of Satya Nadella's heart.

Fast forward to now, and bizarrely both devices began to suffer from a swollen battery, sufficient to cause the screen to detach from the case (see picture below).Our hero trotted into Microsoft's recently opened London store and was given a brand spanking new Pro 6 in exchange for the bulbous Pro 3, no questions asked. However, the Surface 3 was a different matter, with staff offering him the opportunity to hand it over to be safely disposed of and would he care to purchase a replacement?

The specific eBay seller here is "neogames," which isn't a household name by any means but has received extremely high user ratings over the years, so there's little reason to expect anything fishy or untrustworthy. Design. When you have a classic, iconic design, you don’t mess with it. As such, the ThinkPad T490s provides the standard ThinkPad black look and feel, which I find to be professional-looking and understated. The materials are premium, durable (Mil-Spec rated), and pleasant to touch, with a carbon fiber hybrid in the display lid and a skin oil-resistant magnesium in the bottom. All the familiar ThinkPad touches are here, from the angled ThinkPad logo with the lit red dot on the “i” indicating power to the iconic ThinkPad keyboard and dual pointing system.

Display. While the ThinkPad T490s can be configured with a variety of 14-inch display panels, the review unit arrived with a mid-tier option, a Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display with an anti-glare coating that pumps out 400 nits of brightness. Despite its 16:9 aspect ratio, Lenovo has done a good job of minimizing bezels, especially on the sides, which are 13 percent smaller than in last year’s model. And the display can lay flat, which is useful. The review unit’s display was not multi-touch capable, which I find to be an odd omission in 2019.

Components. As one would expect, the ThinkPad T490s provides a nice selection of modern components, including a four-core 8th-generation Intel Core processor—an i5-8265U in the review unit—8 or 16 GB of RAM, and speedy M.2/PCIe SSD storage (512 GB in the review unit).

Performance, noise, and heat. Performance has been excellent for the standard productivity tasks in which I engage, but I’ve also used it to write code in Visual Studio. The cooling system vents out of the right side of the device, and that can get warm if the device is running hard. But fan noise is minimal, as is the heat.

Connectivity. The T490s provides dual-band Intel 9560 Wi-Fi 801.ac wireless networking and Bluetooth 5.0 support. There is an Ethernet extension connector paired with one of the device’s USB-C ports for use while docking, but no cellular broadband.

Ports. I really appreciate the level of expansion provided by the ThinkPad 490s. There are two USB-C ports (one with Thunderbolt 3 that double as a dock connection), an Ethernet extension connector (for a dock), a full-sized USB 3.1 port, and a full-sized HDMI-out port on the left, and a full-sized USB 3.1 port on the right. I’d prefer to see at least one USB-C port on the right side, but the USB-C ports at least provide anti-fry technology.

Keyboard and touchpad. As a ThinkPad, the T490s is outfitted with an excellent 6-row, island-style, and backlit keyboard and the vaunted dual pointing system with TrackPoint and touchpad capabilities. But I have two gripes about the keyboard: Lenovo continues to reverse the Fn and CTRL keys (though you can reverse them in software) and the tiny arrow and PgUp/PgDn buttons crowded into the lower right corner made for too many mistypes.

Unique hardware features. Those concerned with privacy will be delighted to see that Lenovo outfitted the T940s with a ThinkShutter privacy filter for the webcam, which is a decent if unexceptional 720p unit. The T940s also supports two forms of Windows Hello authentication via its fingerprint reader, which is excellent, and its webcam.

Portability. At just 2.81 pounds, the ThinkPad T490s feels quite light in my hands, and it’s barely noticeable in my carry-on bag. And it delivered 7:40 in real-world battery life on average, according to the Windows 10 battery report, which analyzed about a month’s worth of regular usage. As good, you can charge the laptop to 80 percent in 60 minutes. Overall, it’s a highly portable road companion.

If the idea of a built-in six-inch secondary monitor sounds like exactly what you’re looking for in a gaming laptop and you don’t care much about unplugged operation, HP’s Omen X 2S is the only game in town (unless you want to track down a used 2014-era Razer Blade). If you’re sure you’ll find the second screen useful instead of fumbling with your smartphone for secondary functions like chat, it’s worth considering.

The compromised peripherals, clunky software, and short battery life make HP’s dual-screen gamer tough to recommend. With a dedicated keyboard and mouse, it’s a good gaming and productivity machine. But at that point, you might as well just opt for a compact gaming desktop with a second (much larger) screen.

At worst, this Omen feels like a collection of mostly passed-over gaming laptop ideas: the second screen from a 2014-era Razer, the keyboard and touchpad from a 2018-era Asus Zephyrus, and a cinched-in hinge from a late-model Alienware m15. None of these ideas are inherently awful in isolation, but bringing them all together in one laptop, along with sluggish software, doesn’t make for a gaming portable with mass appeal.

At best, the Omen X 2S is an experiment that a particular subset of gamers will find appealing, facilitating gaming and multitasking on the go without having to clutter up your primary display. But we’d still like to see better battery life so that you could multitask for longer than a couple of hours while unplugged.

Back in January 2018, HP issued a battery recall covering 50,000 laptop batteries which had the potential to overheat and become either a burn of fire hazard. A year on, and the recall has been expanded to include a further 28,500 batteries taking the total up to 78,500.

The faulty batteries were shipped in a wide range of products or sold as accessories for those products. As the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website explains, the complete list includes "HP ProBooks (64x G2 and G3 series, 65x G2 and G3 series, 4xx G4 series), HPx360 (310 G2), HP Pavilion x360 11inch Notebook PC, HP 11 Notebook PC, HP ZBook (17 G3, and Studio G3) mobile workstations. The batteries were also sold as accessories or replacement batteries for the HP ZBook Studio G4 mobile workstation, HP ProBook 4xx G5 series, HP ENVY 15, HP Mobile Thin Clients (mt21, mt22, and mt31)."

As Tom's Hardware reports, HP actually updated the recall in January this year, but not many people heard about it. The CPSC forms part of the US government, which was stuck in a shutdown at the time and therefore sharing of this new information didn't happen on its website immediately. That changed on March 12.

The advice for these newly added batteries is the same as it was last year. Visit the website www.HP.com/go/batteryprogram2018 to check if your battery is included in the recall. If it is, then instructions are provided on how to place your battery in a "Battery Safety Mode." Replacing them will require HP provide an authorized technician to remove the old, faulty unit and install a new one as the customer can't do it themselves.

Plus, while HP’s Command Center software (which is also used to control the laptop’s lighting and any compatible connected peripherals) is well laid-out, and the main menus work pretty well via the touch interface, the software itself was often quite sluggish. I found myself frequently waiting several seconds for it to load, either on the primary screen. And when trying to close it on the primary display, I often had to click the X in the upper-right corner more than twice before it would actually close. That last bit is exacerbated by the fact that the physical mouse buttons are, again, confusingly close to the arrow keys of the keyboard. I was often uncertain whether I had actually clicked, or just mashed the right arrow key.

It’s also worth pointing out that HP’s Command Center software lets you switch between three performance modes: Comfort, Default, and Performance. The former is designed to keep temperatures cool while sacrificing some performance. The latter is the all-out high-performance setting designed to deliver the best possible frame rates and CPU speeds the laptop is capable of. We did all our benchmarking on the Performance setting. And while we wouldn’t say the laptop was always quiet, even at this top-end settings, the fans never got as noisy as what we’ve heard from some competing high-end gaming portables.

When those come out, use a plastic spudger to separate the base, starting from the hinges and working your way down to the bottom. It was tight on ours, but eventually came off clean. Once that was settled, the SSD and RAM were immediately and easily accessible. One of the two SODIMM slots is covered by a protective piece of paper. As for the SSDs, our configuration had an extra bay, so it’s really easy to slot in an additional drive.

Battery Life

Gaming laptops seldom impress in unplugged run time -- especially when Nvidia’s G-Sync is in play, forcing the laptop to lean on its dedicated graphics, rather than the more-efficient integrated graphics silicon. But even with its second screen switched off, the Omen lasted just under two-and-a-half hours on our battery test, which constantly browses the web, streams video and runs OpenGL benchmarks at 150 nits of brightness. That’s well behind the competition, and below the 3:16 category average.

To see how hot the Omen can get, we measured the heat while running the Metro Exodus stress test.The keyboard reached 30.4 degrees Celsius (86.7 degrees Fahrenheit) between the G and H keys, and the touchpad hit 30.3 degrees Celsius (86.5 degrees Fahrenheit). These numbers are quite cool for gaming, likely a byproduct of HP moving the keyboard to the very edge of the chassis and putting the cooling solution under the second screen.

The bottom of the laptop got as hot as a toasty 55.5 degrees Celsius (131.2 degrees Fahrenheit) in our testing, which is more in line with most gaming machines.

HP bills the webcam on the Omen X 2S as Wide Vision FHD, with dual-array mics. The camera does have a wider field of view than most, but images during video chats weren’t as crisp as I’d expect given the resolution, with the edges of my shoulders looking jagged. In short, the camera is fine for basic communication in games or the conference room. But if you’re a serious streamer, you’d definitely going to want a dedicated camera.

Configurations

HP sent out the middle of three US configurations of the Omen X 2S. For $2,849.99, you get a six-core Intel Core i7-9750H processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics, 16GB of RAM, and a roomy 1TB of NVMe storage. That configuration also includes the 144Hz 1080p main display.

The maxed-out option with an eight-core Core i9-9880H CPU, the same 2080 Max-Q graphics, 32GB of RAM, 2TB of storage and an even faster 240Hz screen will set you back $4,299.99. And an “entry-level” option with RTX 2070 Max-Q graphics and just 256GB of NVMe storage--all other components being the same as our review unit--sells for $1,799.99. The middle option that HP sent us is the best for gamers, as you won’t see major FPS benefits for the higher-end CPU and 32GB of RAM, and the 256GB of storage on the entry model isn’t roomy enough to store more than a few modern AAA titles plus the OS and other files.

The 15.6-inch primary display on the Omen X 2S features IPS technology for excellent viewing angles, Nvidia G-Sync for tear-free gaming and a 144Hz refresh rate for smooth, high-fps gaming. In other words, it’s a pretty feature-packed screen.It’s also fairly bright. We measured it at 306 nits, which is a bit above the category average as well as most of the competition. Only the Alienware m15 and its OLED screen scored better.

As for the color gamut, HP’s display managed 107% of sRGB, which is lower than the competition, as well as the category average (146%). But overall, the screen looks good and performs well, whether you’re watching Netflix or three hours into a dungeon crawl.

Both the keyboard and the touchpad on the Omen X 2S take a big backseat in terms of layout and execution to the presence of the second screen that sits above them. The reduced physical space means the touchpad is small and smushed to one side. And the keyboard has no wrist area, with the keys running right up to the front edge. HP does include a big rubber wrist rest in the box, but it’s heavy, gets dirty very easily, and has no way of attaching to the laptop.

The keyboard also has layout issues: The arrow keys sit right next to the touchpad’s mouse buttons, which are similarly sized in terms of height, so that it’s far too easy to trigger a mouse click when what you wanted to do was press the right arrow key, and often vice versa. You also lose dedicated Page Up/Down buttons, and the Insert and Delete keys live up above the Backspace button.

The keys are brightly RGB-backlit, and key travel doesn’t feel as shallow as some competitors (like Razer). But if you’re looking for mechanical switches, you won’t find them here. And if you plan on using your laptop to do a fair amount of work when you aren’t gaming, you’re probably going to want to plug in an external keyboard.

The same goes for a dedicated mouse. Gamers of course will want to use a mouse, but given the odd placement of the touchpad, and it’s small, square dimensions, I found myself missing my mouse even when doing basic things like navigating Windows.
Out of the box, the Omen X 2S’ speakers were a disappointment. Volume at max wasn’t as loud as I’m used to with premium gaming laptops, and there was little in the way of low end. Software is included to adjust the EQ, which may help a bit. But if you’re expecting to feel the thud of explosions around you or to fill the room with your favorite thumping tunes, you’ll either need to invest in a set of external speakers or opt for another laptop.

So what about the 6-inch 1080p touchscreen that’s the Omen X 2S’s primary differentiating feature? On the positive side, it’s pretty versatile, as Windows sees it as a second display, so you can put literally whatever you want down there. My personal default for RTS and other titles like They Are Billions is to drop the minimap down onto the second screen so it’s easier to see slow-moving zombies as they attempt to drag themselves into my developing settlement.

Chat apps are also a no-brainer if you’re a streamer or social gamer. Although it won’t be easy to respond via text while gaming, it’s a decent way to keep up on the in-game chatter and respond via voice if that’s how you roll.I also found looking down at the screen less of an issue than I thought I would. Thanks to good viewing angles, the image always looked crisp and clear, and so long as I was sitting up with my body just behind the keyboard, most text and on-screen items were easy to see, despite the six-inch size of the screen. That said, I’d still prefer a second, large screen off to one side.

HP’s Command Center software does an OK job of controlling what you put on the second screen as well, making selecting and mirroring a specific part of your primary screen about as intuitive as using the Windows Snipping Tool.But I couldn’t shake the feeling that, in most cases, chats and other use cases for the second screen are better handled by using a smartphone or, if you’re somewhere at a desk, a dedicated second monitor. Because text isn’t always easy to read on a six-inch display, and mirroring the minimap doesn’t really make it that much bigger than it is on the main screen.

Port selection on the Omen is adequate, if not expansive. On the left edge, HP delivers an HDMI 2.0B port, a pair of USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type A ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port and a headphone/mic jack, alongside the power jack.

Connectivity on the right edge is limited by a vent. HP includes vents both at the back and the right side, to help keep this compact portable’s high-end components cool. As such, you’ll only find another USB 3.1 Type-A and a Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C port here. There’s nothing around back save for more vents on either side of the laptop’s central hinge. Ideally we’d like to see another USB-C port, but there are enough ports for most gamers and productivity users.

HP equipped our review unit of the Omen X 2S with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 with 8GB of GDDR6 memory, which is capable of playing most games at their highest settings, usually at the high frame rates that the 144 Hz primary screen is capable of. When I played 2016’s Doom at the display’s native 1080p resolution and Ultra settings, the game ran at an average of 147 fps (frames per second).

For our comparison systems, we pitted the Omen X 2S against recent 15- and 17-inch gaming laptops we tested. The Razer Blade 15 Advanced (with the same Core i7-9750H CPU and RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics as our Omen config), the Alienware m15 (with a previous-gen Core i7-8750H and RTX 2070 graphics), and MSI’s 17-inch GE75 Raider (also with a 8750H and RTX 2080 graphics).

On Shadow of the Tomb Raider (1080p, very high), the Omen ran at a smooth 64 fps, above the 58 fps premium gaming laptop average, and better than anything else here save for the larger MSI system.On the Hitman benchmark (1080p, ultra), the Omen managed to best even the MSI system, delivering 111 fps, again higher than the 105 fps category average.

When we turned to Grand Theft Auto V (1080p, very high), the Omen landed behind the MSI machine (81 fps vs. the Raider’s 96 fps), but was just above the category average.In Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, the Omen, at 98 fps, once again slipped behind the MSI’s leading 107 fps, but was ahead of everything else, including the 92 fps category average.

To stress test the Omen, I ran the Metro Exodus benchmark 15 times on RTX settings, simulating approximately half an hour of gaming. During the test, the HP system ran the game at an average of frames 31.3 frames per second. The first run went by at 32.2 fps, but then the laptop dropped about a frame lower and stayed there throughout the rest of the runs.

During the stress test, the CPU ran at an average clock speed of 3.99 GHz, and the average CPU temperature was 78 degrees Celsius (173 degrees Fahrenheit).The GPU’s average clock speed was 965 MHz and its average temperature was 55 degrees Celsius (131 degrees Fahrenheit).
Temperatures and performance should be aided here, in theory, because HP uses Thermal Grizzly’s Conductonaut liquid metal, rather than thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink. This material is something enthusiasts often use to lower processor temperatures and, therefore, achieve better performance via higher sustained Boost clock speeds.

This is the first time that we know of that a major laptop maker has used liquid metal, and we’ve seen plenty of evidence that it does lower temperatures compared to traditional thermal pads or paste. But given the company’s use of a locked processor on the Omen X 2S, we expect real-world benefits to be minimal. We applaud HP’s use of the material, but would like to see it in place on unlocked CPUs in the future where the lower temperatures can be used to, hopefully, push overclocks higher and thus achieving more substantive performance gains.

The Omen X 2S’ six-core Intel Core i7-9750H is a capable mobile gaming CPU and no slouch at productivity. But it’s no flagship processor or full-bore desktop CPU. On Geekbench 4.1, HP’s laptop scored 22,608, just below the category average, but still better than the competing laptops here.

"It was sort of a very slow process of learning and understanding about that, and what was particularly driving that technology in California, which was very much local air pollution and the very negative effects that was having on particularly on children and old people in Los Angeles."[LA] has had a very severe pollution problems in its history. And it was an attempt to kind of clean that up was where [electric cars] originated from.

"But, also, the development came out of the computer industry rather than the automotive industry. The automotive industry were not changing at all. They were making money selling bigger and bigger SUVs with bigger and bigger engines. They were not in the least bit interested."So it was very much down to the formation of companies like Tesla that showed it was possible to make an electric car that was essentially better than the cars we've been using. And that's really what sort of flipped things around.

Outside of general performance improvements that are typical of a new generation of CPUs, Intel has put a lot of effort into improving connectivity, battery life, and even AI performance on the new chips. These new processors come with support for the latest Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standard, which is only just starting to hit the market. Thunderbolt 3 support is also now built into the CPU, with support for up to four ports, eliminating the need for a separate controller in laptops.

On the graphics side of things, chips equipped with Intel's latest Iris Plus graphics hit up to twice the performance when compared to 8th Gen CPUs, Intel claims. Based on Intel's Gen11 graphics architecture, the integrated GPUs come with built-in support for VESA's Adaptive Sync standard — a first for Intel graphics. According to Intel, the increases in graphics performance with this generation of chips should allow for smooth 1080p gaming in games like Fortnite and Dirt Rally 2, along with more efficient 4K video editing and photo processing.

The final big addition with the 10th Gen is the inclusion of a dedicated instruction set, Deep Learning Boost, for accelerating neural networks and AI workloads. The company claims up to 1 teraflop of GPU engine compute performance for "sustained, high-throughput inference applications like video stylization, analytics and real-time video." The company has also included a dedicated engine for background AI tasks like voice processing and noise suppression.

Intel says it expects 35 new laptop and 2-in-1 designs to debut with 10th Gen Ice Lake chips through the end of the year. We've already seen a preview of some of these, including Dell's new XPS 13 2-in-1 7390. Outside of laptops, expect the 10th Gen "Ice Lake" range to debut for other portions of the PC market, including desktops, over the next year.

Flight Engineer Nick Hague is researching the thermophysical properties of ultra-heated materials in microgravity and installed samples into the Electrostatic Levitation Furnace. He then fueled up the Bioculture System to support the Cell Science-02 bone healing and tissue regeneration study.

Luckily, iOS12 gives you the ability to record your screen by default.On your iPad, simply swipe down from the upper right corner of the display to bring up the Control Center. Then, tap the icon shaped like a target. Then, hit Start Recording. While you're recording, a red band will appear at the top of your screen -- so that way you'll know if you're live or not. To stop, simply tap the red bar and hit Stop.

10. Search your entire device using the Spotlight tool

Did you know your iPad comes with a built-in search engine that can help you locate anything stored on your device or on the cloud? No, it's not Google -- it's just a part of iOS! But just like Google, it's extremely handy at helping you find anything within the confines of your tablet.

To access the Spotlight tool, simply touch the center of your display and pull down. You'll see a menu appear with a search bar, Siri Suggestions of apps to use, and some recommendations based on previous activity. From here, just type to search for your query, and touch the results to open them. It's that simple!

We talked to Robert Llewellyn about what got him into the greener energy movement."What got me into the into the area? About 18 years ago in California we were making Scrapheap Challenge in the USA. It was just a fluke of the fact I was spending a lot of time with lots of engineers who were on the show, many of whom were working in the really early development stages of the new generation of electric cars that we're seeing now.

"So they were using laptop batteries, and electric motor drive trains: really, really basic stuff."It was quite Scrapheap-ish, in a way, as they were developing that technology four or five years before Tesla was formed. But a lot of those engineers went on to work in that field."I was kind of slightly baffled and confused but it, thinking why bother, you know, we've got cars. Why are they doing this?"

It's true that editing large amounts on text can be tedious on the iPad, but fortunately, Apple has enabled "trackpad mode" for the first time on iOS 12.With trackpad mode, you can easily scroll through text that you've typed and instantly jump from the top to the bottom of a page (or vice versa). To enable trackpad mode, simply hold the space bar down on the keyboard until all the keys go gray. As long as you don't remove your finger, you can easily scroll through the entirety of your content.

iPads are pretty good at maintaining themselves at a steady pace -- but sometimes you'll notice your battery draining more than usual. This is usually because of apps running in the background and continuing to use data.While it can be useful to have Apple's "Background App Refresh" downloading and preparing the latest updates to your Twitter timeline, turning the feature off can help you save critical battery life for when you need it most.

To disable the Background App Refresh, navigate to your Settings app and select General. Then, select Background App Refresh and turn the feature "Off" from the top. Your apps may take a few seconds longer to load when you first open them, but the extra battery life is well worth the wait.

3. Keep your personal photos in private albums

There's a lot of joy to be had in passing the iPad around to show off your photos. But sometimes, we might not want everyone to see all of our business in one place. Thankfully, there's now a way to instantly hide your private photos by default into an album that's separate from your current camera roll.

To hide photos, simply open your Photos app and tap Select in the upper right-hand corner. Next, tap the photos you want to hide and select the Share button from the bottom left of the screen (it looks like a box with an arrow coming out). Select Hide from the menu that appears at the bottom of your screen. Now, your photos are hidden in a separate album for you to access at your convenience.

When you're neck-deep in text while you're browsing the web, simply tapping the title bar of the app or web page will send you zooming right back to the top with no delay. Since it was designed to make browsing easier, all you need to do is touch the black bar at the top of your display (where the time shows) and you'll find yourself right on top of where you need to be.

Does anyone remember scanners? Unless you work in an office environment, you probably won't need to use one again thanks to the Notes app on your iPad. If you have something that needs to be scanned, you can use your iPad's camera to take a photo of your document and add it directly to your Notes.To use it, open the Notes app and tap the plus button in the bottom center of the display. Then, choose Scan Documents. In addition, options like black and white, grayscale, or color can help make the document stand out for easier reading -- whether its typed, handwritten or printed.

The iPad's size is one of its biggest strengths, but sometimes, we don't always want to set it on our lap or on a desk in order to type. Wouldn't it just be easier if we could type with our thumbs like on a smartphone?Well, believe it or not, Apple already thought of this! By default, you can easily split the keyboard of the iPad so each side retreats to the bottom corners of the device. This makes it perfectly possible for you to type using nothing but your thumbs -- just like if your iPad was a giant smartphone.

To split your keyboard, simply hold the keyboard icon on the bottom right of the screen until a menu pops up. Without lifting your finger from the screen, move it up to Split and the keyboard will immediately separate. To put it back to normal, the process is the same except you'll select Merge instead.

8. Get this accessory to charge your iPad even faster

It's no secret that iPads can take a long time to charge. It's for a good reason though -- the battery is absolutely massive. And it has to be in order to properly power that gorgeous display.

Even still, there is a way to get your iPad in fighting shape much faster than normal. Apple's USB-C charging block is designed for its laptops -- but with a lightning adapter, your iPad can enjoy increased charging speeds with zero additional effort. Have somewhere to go? Sometimes, sharing what you're doing with your friends and loved ones goes beyond a simple photo or screenshot. Let's say you're playing a game on Facebook like Words With Friends -- and you really want to show your family members across the country the epic combination you just came up with. A photo isn't gonna cut it. What you want is a screen recording.

It's not required to go for larger storage configurations. While a 1TB SSD would be nice to have for any student, especially one that works with media, it'll increase the price of the laptop considerably. Even a 128GB drive would be more than enough for most students, and you can always add an external drive, MicroSD card if there's a slot on the side, or replace the internal drive with a larger SSD at a later date. (You should try and buy an easily upgradeable laptop.)

There's also the consideration of Office 365 from Microsoft. Should your student gain access to the cloud suite through college or by subscribing to it themselves — some laptops even come with a subscription included — they will be able to access cloud-based storage through OneDrive. With 1TB of storage available with Office 365, there'll be more than enough space for all their files.Depending on what the student will use the laptop for, it's better to go with a 250GB SSD or a 128GB drive if you can persuade them to use other forms of storage.

Amazon and other storefronts may offer some enticing deals on laptops, but you shouldn't ignore Microsoft, HP, Dell, and other vendors who provide not only promotions of their own, but sometimes discounts for those in education. The student discount can knock a fair chunk off the price of even more premium laptops, allowing you to get more for your money.

Most students won't need an Intel Core i9 processor, 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage with a dedicated RTX 2080 GPU. These specifications sound great on paper, but you will need to pay out the big bucks for such performance, as well as a severe battery drain. A laptop with an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor and 8 to 16GB of RAM will be more than enough.
