The G5 15 didn't have any trouble with Rise of the Tomb Raider either. With a steady rate of 37 fps, the G5 15 matched the Legion Y7000 and outperformed the GF63 8RB (27 fps). The Predator Helios 300 (38 fps) and the average gaming laptop (44 fps) played Tomb Raider at an even faster pace.

Unfortunately, the G5 15 SE's GTX 1650 GPU slumped in the Metro: Last Light benchmark, maintaining only 29 fps, which is below our 30-fps threshold. While that matches the GF63 8RB, the Legion Y7000 (46 fps), Predator Helios 300 (48 fps) and average mainstream gaming laptop (48 fps) all ran the game with more frames to spare.

The same goes for Middle-Earth: Shadow of War (Ultra, 1080p), which the G5 15 played at 47 fps. Yes, that's more than playable, but the Legion Y7000 (69 fps), Predator Helios 300 (75 fps) and average mainstream laptop (67 fps) surpassed the Dell. The GF63 8RB (44 fps) struggled on this benchmark.

The G5 15 SE isn't the best laptop for virtual reality. The system scored a 5.6 on the SteamVR Performance Test, a mark that alls short of the mainstream average (7.9) and results from the Predator Helios 300 (7.9) and Legion Y7000 (7.0)

Armed with an Intel Core i5-9300H CPU and 8GB of RAM, the G5 15 has enough power to run anything but the most demanding tasks. I replaced my work machine with the G5 15 for a day and didn't run into any performance hiccups, even when I simultaneously watched an Overwatch stream and the Women's World Cup group stage. There wasn't any lag when I loaded 20 Google Chrome webpages while playing four 1080p YouTube videos.

That said, if you're a photographer, videographer or someone who frequently transfers large files, then the G5 15 isn't for you. That's because the G5 15's sluggish 1TB 5,400-rpm HDD and 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD needed 39 seconds to complete our file-transfer test (duplicating 4.97GB of mixed-media files), for a disappointing rate of 130.1 megabytes per second. That's magnitudes slower than the hard drives in the Legion Y7000 (636 MBps, 256GB SSD), GF63 8RB (318 MBps, 256GB M.2 SSD) and Predator Helios 300 (363 MBps, 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD). The category average is a much speedier 390.8 MBps.

The G5 15 did reasonably well on our other performance tests, although its 9th Gen Core i5 CPU couldn't keep up with 8th Gen Core i7 processors in rival systems. The G5 15 scored a 16,722 on the Geekbench 4.3 test, which is considerably worse than what the Legion Y7000 (Core i7-8750H, 22,474), GF63 8RB (Core i7-8750H, 21,811) and Predator Helios 300 (Core i7-8750H, 20,595) achieved.

We saw similar results on the HandBrake test, in which the G5 15 took a leisurely 14 minutes and 31 seconds to transcode a 4K video into 1080p resolution. Other mainstream gaming laptops completed that task near or below the 10-minute mark, as happened with the Legion Y7000 (9:34), GF63 8RB (10:20) and Predator Helios 300 (10:30). The category average (10:25) is right around 10 minutes, as well.

Battery Life

Gaming laptops have a bad rap when it comes to battery life, but every now and then we come across a rare gem that defies the stereotype. The G5 15 is one of those precious stones. This gaming rig endured for 6 hours and 53 minutes on the Laptop Mag battery test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits.

That may not sound like a long time, but other gaming laptops power down after just a few hours, as proven by the paltry mainstream gaming laptop average of 4:07. The Legion Y7000 (4:28), GF63 8RB (3:30) and Predator Helios 300 SE (3:00) shut down several hours before the G5 15.

I risked testing the G5 15's runtime by bringing the chunky machine to a coffee shop without a charger, and I was happy to get 6 hours of work done before I had to head back home to juice the machine back up.

When I played Rise of the Tomb Raider, the blue ChemLight hanging off Lara Croft's belt loop glowed a rich neon blue, lighting up a dark cave with a calming aura. The deep scrapes and cuts across Croft's shoulder and arms oozed a deep scarlet that stood out against the lush earthen tones of the environment around her.

The G5 15's display covers 154% of the sRGB color gamut, which makes this screen almost three times more vivid than the display on last year's model. It's even more colorful than the displays on top competitors, including the Legion Y7000 (153%), GF63 8RB (73%) and Predator Helios 300 SE (113%).

The panel is also fairly bright, reaching 270 nits, which is right around the average for mainstream gaming laptops of 271 nits. The Legion Y7000's display (277 nits) was a bit more luminous, while the Predator Helios 300 SE (312 nits) breached the 300-nit mark. The G5 15 SE's display is brighter than the GF63 8RB's screen (246 nits).

If only all gaming keyboards were this comfortable. The G5 15's island-style keyboard is as good as you could ask for in a laptop of this price and size. The keys are nicely spaced and large despite the full-sized numpad found on the right size.

There's nothing fancy going on here; the keys aren't curved, mechanical or textured. In fact, with their flat, black keycaps, they remind me a lot of the keys on XPS laptops. Fortunately, the keys on the G5 15 offer a lot more travel than those on Ultrabooks, at 1.7 millimeters, which is above our 1.5mm preference.

The keys also provide the right amount of actuation force (66 grams), which gives them a firm clickiness. I didn't bottom out at all when writing this review, proving that the keyboard is comfortable enough to use during long typing sessions.

Our review unit came with blue-backlit keys, though I personally would spend an extra $30 for the optional four-zone RGB backlit keyboard.

I typed at 118 words per minute with an accuracy rate of 94% on the 10fastfingers.com typing test. That result is slightly slower and less accurate than my 119-wpm and 95% averages.

Once I got used to the offset positioning, I didn't run into any problems using the G5 15's 4.1 x 3.1-inch precision touchpad to execute Windows 10 gestures, like pinch-to-zoom and three-finger swipe to switch apps.

The dual forward-firing speakers on the front edge of the G5 15 can fill a medium-sized room, but they sound thin out of the box. You'll need to tinker with the Alienware Command Center to get the best audio quality.

When I listened to the song "What Once Was" by Her's, the late Stephen Fitzpatrick's delicate vocals were clear but got swallowed by the electric guitar. In fact, the entire song felt hollow and recessed. Increasing the Vocal Clarity, Treble Enhancer and Bass Boost controls in the Command Center app gave the song a bit more life, but the speakers still lacked energy.

Those speakers seem to be optimized for gaming, because the caves in Rise of the Tomb Raider had an eerily convincing echo as I scurried through the darkness as Lara Croft. When the floor gave out from underneath my character, the loud, booming sound of rocks crashing against each other almost made me jump.

The G5 15 is the first laptop we've reviewed that comes armed with Nvidia's new GeForce GTX 1650 GPU with 4GB of VRAM. For context, the GTX 1650 is a step up from the GTX 1050 found in most budget gaming laptops and premium performance machines, but it doesn't quite offer GTX 1060 performance on most games.

Regardless, I played Rise of the Tomb Raider at a steady 31 frames per second on Very High graphics settings. At a few moments, the game dipped below our 30-fps playability threshold. But I still didn't experience any lag or stuttering, even as I swam through lakes and climbed up ruins.

We saw mixed results on our gaming benchmarks, with the G5 15 outperforming competitors on some games but falling far behind on others. Hitman was one game in which the G5 15 did quite well, producing 85 frames per second (1080p, Ultra). It's higher than the category average (78 fps) and the scores from the Legion Y7000 (70 fps, GTX 1060 GPU), GF63 8RB (69 fps, GTX 1050Ti) and Predator Helios 300 SE (72 fps, GTX 1060).

Dell's much-needed revamp to the G5 15 gaming laptop is a huge success. The redesigned system has a much-improved 15.6-inch, 1080p display that's nearly three times more colorful than the screen on last year's model. The new design is also sure to be a crowd-pleaser, especially on our Special Edition review unit, which flaunts a clean white lid and a neat glass window on the bottom.

Also noteworthy is the G5 15's new 9th Gen Intel Core i5 CPU and GTX 1650 GPU, which both offer good, if unremarkable performance. There's still room for improvement with the G5 15; the machine remains rather large, and its storage drives are painfully slow. Despite these flaws, the G5 15 is one of the best midrange laptops for casual gamers.

Dell was gracious enough to send us the special edition (SE) version of the G5 15, which has an Alpine White lid, with a glass cutout underneath that reveals a colorful heat-management system.

The base-model G5 15 SE costs $1,044 and comes with a Core i5-9300H CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 128GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD with a 1TB SATA HDD, and an Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU (4GB of VRAM). Our $1,068 review unit had the same components but double the SSD storage.

The $1,369 version is a big jump in both price and performance. That model packs a Core i7-9750H CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD + 1TB SATA HDD, and a GTX 1660 GPU. You also get a 15.6-inch display with a 144-Hz refresh rate, up from the 60 Hz in the lower-tier models. The $1,519 high-end model ditches the 144-Hz display but comes with a Core i7-9750H CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and RTX 2060 graphics.

Not a fan of the Alpine White? Dell also offers similar configurations of the Deep Black nonspecial-edition G5 15 for less money.

Dell dialed back the "gamer" aesthetic of the previous model and gave the G5 15 a sleeker, more modern appearance.

The special edition we reviewed has the same Arctic White plastic lid we praised on the last-gen G7 15 (sadly, the 2019 version has a black-and-red color scheme), while the nonspecial edition has a Deep Space Black finish. Our unit's white lid looks clean and gives the laptop a certain allure that's missing in the overcrowded group of black-and-red laptops.

Matching the blue keyboard font and touchpad trim, a centered Dell logo on the lid shifts from indigo to chartreuse depending on how the light hits (the effect is pretty trippy). Also on the lid is a silver hinge with an embossed G5 logo.

Angled rear vents reveal stylish blue trim on the inside of this rig, while a stack of ridges wrapping around the chassis gives the G5 15 an aggressive stance when it's closed.

Unique to the special edition version of the G5 15 is a glass window on the bottom that reveals blue heat pipes and fan blades. Sure, it looks cool next to the white bottom panel, but I can't think of any good reason to look at the underside of a laptop.

That clean white finish is sadly absent on the inside of the laptop. Part of me wishes Dell had kept a consistent color scheme, while another part of me appreciates the cold, black aluminum deck, which feels more premium than what I'm used to in this price range. Dell made another major improvement in trimming down the display bezels. While not quite as narrow as those on the XPS laptops, these thin display borders keep the G5 15 relatively compact.

Still, I felt more embarrassed than I normally do when I used the G5 15 on the small table of a local Brooklyn coffee shop. That's because the G5 15 is rather bulky and heavy, measuring 1 inch thick, and weighing 5.6 pounds. Rival gaming laptops -- including the Lenovo Legion Y7000 (1.1 inches, 5.3 pounds), Acer Predator Helios 300 Special Edition (1.1 inches, 5.5 pounds) and MSI GF63 8RB (0.9 inches, 4.2 pounds) -- are about the same size but don't weigh as much.

The G5 15 has plenty of ports for connecting to monitors, docks and peripherals while charging other devices. Unfortunately, some of those ports (including the power jack) are on the back edge, which will frustrate some users.

On the right side of the G5 15, you'll find an SD card slot and a USB 3.1 port. The opposite edge houses a USB-C port alongside a second USB 3.1 port and a headphone jack. On the rear edge of the G5 15, there's an HDMI 2.0 input, a third USB 3.1 port, an RJ45 Ethernet port and a lock slot.Only the RTX 2060 model offers Thunderbolt 3 and mini Display ports, so you'll have to pay up for future-proof connectivity.

The new G5 15 SE's 15.6-inch, 1080p display is sharp, vivid and reasonably bright, which makes it a massive improvement over the previous model's disappointing screen. My review unit came with the standard 60-Hz display, but Dell also offers a 144-Hz panel that will make fast-moving objects look sharper.

The display was so detailed that I could see the tiny linkages between carburetors in a close-up shot of a Ford GT's engine in a trailer for the film Ford v Ferrari. Color also burst to life; the vinyl booths at a '60s diner shined a luscious red in the scene where Christian Bale and Matt Damon concoct their plan to take down Ferrari. Speaking of which, that iconic red finish on the Ferrari glimmered as the race car sped across my screen.

"SMART" (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) sind im Netz verfügbare Programme zur Überwachung der Festplattentemperatur oder anderer Komponenten. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella erschien persönlich auf der kleinen Bühne in New York und verlor sich in nostalgische Erinnerungen an seinen ersten Rechner, einem Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Die größte Überraschung ist wohl das Surface Duo. Dabei handelt es sich um ein kleines Surface mit Android-Betriebssystem und Telefonfunktion – also im Grunde ein neues Microsoft-Smartphone. Auch, wenn Panay es nicht so bezeichnen wollte. Die Bildschirme sind jeweils 5,6 Zoll groß und lassen sich um 360 Grad umklappen. Die Tastatur ist magnetisch an dem Gerät befestigt und lässt sich bei Bedarf auf eines der Bildschirme klappen und nutzen. Das Gerät kommt mit Windows 10 X, das für Dual Screens optimiert sein soll. Wenn die Tastatur auf eines der Bildschirme geklappt wird, passt sich das Surface Neo entsprechend an, indem die untere Bildschirmhälfte halbiert wird. Die Tastatur lässt sich auch abnehmen und per Bluetooth nutzen. Das Gerät soll Ende 2020 erscheinen. Auch hier nannte Microsoft keinen Preis.

Auch eine Neuheit: das Surface Pro X. Die Besonderheit ist hier der Chip, der auf ARM-Architektur basiert. Somit soll das Surface Pro X schneller, leichter und eine bessere Akkulaufzeit als das Surface Pro 6 haben. Microsoft hat den Chip zusammen mit Snapdragon-Hersteller Qualcomm entwickelt. Das Gerät kommt mit einer Bildschirmdiagonale von 13 Zoll und hat eine Auflösung von 2.880 zu 1.920 Pixel (267 ppi). Das Pro X ist 5,3 Millimeter dünn und wiegt etwa 760 Gramm.

Unter anderem sollen dank des neuen Chips mehrere Programme gleichzeitig möglich sein, ohne dass das Gerät langsamer wird. Zudem verfügt das Pro X über einen aufladbaren Stift, der besonders für kreatives Arbeiten geeignet sein soll. Auch hat das Surface Pro X LTE, USB C und eine abnehmbare Festplatte. Als Preis nennt Microsoft 999 Dollar.

Neues Surface Laptop 3 in 13 und 15 Zoll

Daneben zeigte Microsoft den neuen Surface Laptop 3. Hier betonte Panay vor allem die dünne Tastatur und das größere Trackpad. Das Gehäuse an sich besteht aus Aluminium. Als Chip ist ein Achtkerner der zehnten Generation von Intel verbaut. Als Grafikprozessor nutzt Microsoft einen AMD Rhyzen, der speziell für die Surface-Geräte hergestellt wurde.

Das Gerät soll so doppelt so schnell wie das Surface Laptop 2 und laut Microsoft sogar dreimal schneller als das McBook Air sein. Der Akku soll innerhalb einer Stunde zu 80 Prozent aufgeladen sein. Als Preise nennt Microsoft ab 999 Dollar für das 13-Zoll-Gerät und ab 1.199 für das 15-Zoll-Gerät. Die Laptops erscheinen am 22. Oktober.

Doch auch bei einer SSD bleibt einem die Datensicherung nicht erspart. Ein Elektronikdefekt oder Verschleiß kann auch bei ihr dazu führen, dass sie ausfällt. Auch für die längere Archivierung etwa von Fotos sind sie laut Jan Bindig nicht so gut geeignet. Am besten solle man seine Daten gleichzeitig auf einer SSD- und einer HDD-Festplatte sichern.

Was kann ich gegen zu große Hitze tun?

Eine der größten Gefahren für Festplatten neben Erschütterung ist Überhitzung. Daher muss man gerade im Sommer besonders gut aufpassen, dass man seine Festplatte nicht der prallen Sonne aussetzt. Hitze sorgt nämlich für einen "Headcrash", bei dem die Speicherschicht beschädigt wird.

Es empfiehlt sich, Festplatten im Büro oder in Autos nie in der Sonne liegen zu lassen. Außerdem sollte man die Raumtemperatur kontrollieren und für ausreichend Luftbewegung sorgen. Eine Temperatur von 30 Grad sollte nicht überschritten werden.

Von dem bekannten Mythos, seine Festplatte im Kühlschrank oder Eisfach runterzukühlen, rät Bindig stark ab: "Das führt immer zu einer Vergrößerung des Schadens. Das Risiko sollte man nicht eingehen." Doch woher kommt der Mythos? "Bei irgendwem hat das halt mal funktioniert, und dann hat sich das verbreitet", vermutet Bindig. Auch Kunden, die ihre Festplatte in den Backofen gesteckt haben, hatte er schon.

Ein Blitzeinschlag kann zu einer Überspannung im Stromnetz und damit zum Blackout der gesamten PC-Hardware führen. Statistisch gesehen ist die Gefahr eines Gewitterschadens durch Überspannung eher gering, allerdings können die Auswirkungen im Schadensfall verheerend sein.

Auch ein Stromausfall nach einem Gewitter ist laut Bindig eine potenzielle Gefahr, da dann die Schreib- und Leseköpfe unregelmäßig herunterfahren. Defekte Netzteile können aus dem gleichen Grund zum Problem werden.

Wer auf Nummer sicher gehen will, kann in eine Steckdosenleiste mit Überspannungsschutz und Erdung investieren. Schon günstige Modelle (ca. ab 15 €) sind mit einer jahrzehntelangen Garantie zu haben. Deren Bedeutung wird aber laut einer Studie von Google namens "Failure Trends in a Large Disk Population" überschätzt. Und auch Bindig meint: "Bei einer normalen Festplatte ergibt das weniger Sinn."

Um die Installation zu verhindern, rufen Sie die Einstellungen auf und öffnen das Menü "Update und Sicherheit". In der linken Seitenleiste wird das Untermenü "Windows Update" angezeigt. Wählt man dieses aus, kann man im rechten Fenster die Option "Updatepause für 7 Tage" anklicken.

Wer ein anderes Datum bevorzugt oder gleich den maximalen Zeitrahmen von 35 Tagen auskosten will, wechselt zum Dialog "Erweiterte Optionen" und scrollt nach unten bis zum Abschnitt "Updates aussetzen". Dort lässt sich in einem Dropdown-Menü ein beliebiges Datum im maximal möglichen Zeitfenster auswählen.

Übrigens: Der Malware-Schutz durch den Windows Defender ist von der Update-Pause ausgenommen und wird weiterhin aktualisiert. Das ist auch sinnvoll. Denn wie der aktuelle Sicherheitsbericht von AV-Test belegt, werden Windows-Schadprogramme laufend fortentwickelt. Dementsprechend müssen auch die Virenscanner immer auf dem neuesten Stand sein, um sie zu erkennen abzuwehren.

Laut "heise online" bestehe das Problem darin, dass die Hashes der überprüften Dateien nicht mit den Dateien übereinstimmen, die im Windows-Komponentenspeicherverzeichnis (WinSxS) hinterlegt sind. "heise online" schreibt dazu, dass das Systemdatei-Überprüfungsprogramm an sich korrekt funktioniert und der Fehler durch den Aktualisierungsmechanismus des Windows Defender entstanden ist.

To test the system's external temperature, we stream a video at full screen for 15 minutes, and then use a Raytek MiniTemp laser temperature gauge to measure the temperature (in Fahrenheit) of the touchpad, the space between the G and H keys, and the underside of the notebook. We also measure any other hot spots on the notebook.

In the case of gaming laptops, we play a game, such as , for 15 minutes, and then retake the temperatures in those same areas. We consider anything above 95 degrees to be uncomfortable and anything above 100 degrees too hot.

To measure the brightness of a notebook's display, we enable the machine's high-contrast white background and then use an XRite colorimeter and the Dispcal app to measure the brightness of each of the four corners of the screen, as well as the center. We then average the five readings to determine the display's overall brightness in nits.
We're using the X-Rite colorimeter for more than just measuring brightness; we're also using it to see how good a screen is at rendering colors. With the Dispcal app, we measure a screen's RGB color gamut.

RGB color gamut is measured on a scale of 1 percent to 100 percent; the closer a screen is to 100 percent, the more colors it can display in the RGB color space. Many laptops with colorful displays exceed 100 percent of the gamut.

We measure two metrics on keyboards: key travel and actuation. Key travel measures the difference in the height of the key from its resting state to when it is fully depressed. Thinner notebooks will have less travel (perhaps 1 millimeter), while gaming notebooks will have greater travel. Key actuation measures the amount of force, in grams, required for a key to depress.

Generally, we prefer key travel between 1.5 to 2mm or greater, and an actuation of at least 60 grams, though we also judge by our own opinions of how it feels.

There's a host of programs preinstalled on the VivoBook S15's Windows 10 Home operating system. But the VivoBook S15 has some tough competition in this price range. The Lenovo Ideapad 530s is remarkably similar to the VivoBook S15. It has gorgeous looks, a borderless display and a thin-and-light footprint. It also has similar internals -- a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD -- for the same $700 price. Geekbench, developed by Primate Labs, runs on a variety of platforms including Apple and 32-bit or 64-bit Windows machines. Was gilt es vor der Installation von Windows 10 zu bedenken?

Anfangs war Windows 10 für sein rücksichtsloses Vorgehen bei Updates berüchtigt, wobei es auch schon vorkam, dass alle privaten Dateien gelöscht wurden. Diese Mängel kommen nun nicht mehr vor, dennoch sollte man vor dem Upgrade ein aktuelles Backup aller eigenen Dateien anlegen. Das sollte man ohnehin regelmäßig tun. Und da es während und nach dem Upgrade vorkommen kann, dass man mit dem Rechner nicht ins Internet kommt, weil eventuell Netzwerktreiber fehlen, sollte man einen zweiten, funktionierenden Rechner greifbar haben, um Infos nachschlagen und Treiber herunterladen zu können.

Wer die Einbindung seines Benutzeraccounts in Microsofts Cloud-Dienste verhindern möchte, sollte während der Installation beim Anlegen des Kontos die etwas versteckte Option "Benutzer ohne Microsoft-Konto" wählen. Nach der Installation und jedes Mal nach größeren Windows-Versionsupdates empfiehlt es sich, ein Tool wie "O&O ShutUp10" auszuführen, das in seiner Standardeinstellung die meisten Schnüffelfunktionen von Windows 10 abstellt.

Mit der neuen Windows-Version erhalten Nutzer die Möglichkeit, Updates zu pausieren und auf später zu verschieben. Aber darf man die Funktion guten Gewissens nutzen? Wir erklären die Grenzen und die Risiken der Funktion. Windows-Updates kommen manchmal ungelegen. Der Computer muss dazu herunter- und wieder hochfahren. Ob Sie das Mai-Update bereits erhalten haben, stellen Sie am besten fest, indem Sie die Versionsnummer von Windows 10 überprüfen. Diese finden Sie in den Systemeinstellungen unter dem Menüpunkt "Info". Das aktuelle Betriebssystem trägt die Nummer 1903. Um das Mai-Update manuell anzustoßen, folgen Sie bitte dieser Anleitung.

Ewig verschieben geht nicht

Nutzer können die Update-Pause höchstens fünf Mal erneuern. Spätestens nach 35 Tagen muss der Computer aktualisiert werden. So verhindert Microsoft, dass Nutzer automatische Aktualisierungen auf den Sankt Nimmerleinstag verschieben. Schließlich werden mit den Patches teilweise wichtige Sicherheits- und Funktionsprobleme behoben.

Des Weiteren warnt das neue Windows (Version 1903) den Nutzer vor, wenn ein Update den Neustart verlangt. In diesem Fall wird das "Power"-Symbol in der Startleiste mit einem orangenen Punkt angezeigt. So kann der Nutzer noch rechtzeitig die Einstellungen ändern, wenn das Update ungelegen kommt.

Nach Bekanntwerden der Lücken entwickeln und verteilen die Betriebssystemanbieter Updates, die diese Einfallstore schließen – bevor sich tatsächlich Schadsoftware verbreitet, die diese ausnutzen. Diesen enorm wichtigen Sicherheitsmechanismus gibt es ab dem 14. Januar 2020 für Windows 7 nicht mehr.

Wie groß ist das Risiko, wenn man mit dem Rechner einfach weiterarbeitet?

Wegen der fehlenden Updates wird Windows 7 dann von Monat zu Monat unsicherer. Man läuft Gefahr, dass der Rechner schon beim Surfen im Netz, durch heruntergeladene Software oder durch E-Mail-Anhänge oder Dateien von fremden USB-Sticks von Malware befallen wird – mit allen schädlichen Folgen. Antivirensoftware kann übrigens auch nicht effektiv arbeiten, wenn das zugrundeliegende Betriebssystem korrumpiert ist.

Man konnte eine Zeit lang gratis auf Windows 10 upgraden – ist das vorbei?

Obwohl Microsoft das nicht offiziell so kommuniziert, lassen sich derzeit Windows-7-Rechner noch mittels des Media Creation Tool direkt von der Microsoft-Website auf Windows 10 upgraden. Das Tool kann auch einen USB-Stick erstellen, um Windows 10 auf beliebigen Rechnern neu zu installieren. Wie das geht, lesen Sie hier (untere Hälfte des Artikels) oder in dieser Fotoshow.

Bei der Installation akzeptiert Windows 10 auch weiterhin Windows-7-Lizenzschlüssel, die auf der ursprünglichen Verpackung des Betriebssystems oder auf einem Microsoft-Aufkleber auf dem Rechner aufgedruckt sind. Auch mit Windows-8.1-Schlüsseln funktioniert das Upgrade noch.

Falls Sie den Key nicht finden, können Sie ihn aus ihrer aktuellen Windows-Version auslesen. Am einfachsten geht das mithilfe einer Gratis-Software, wie beispielsweise "ShowKeyPlus". Was kostet eine Windows-10-Lizenz und muss es unbedingt die Pro-Version sein?

Die für Heimanwender ausreichende Home-Version gibt es ab circa 100 Euro als DVD mit Lizenzschlüssel. Von 25-Euro-Angeboten, die nur einen Lizenz-Key beinhalten, sollte man Abstand nehmen – sie funktionieren zwar oft, aber rechtlich bewegt man sich zumindest im Graubereich. Die Pro-Version ab 200 Euro bietet Vorteile etwa für Geschäftsleute, die auf Ihrem Notebook wichtige Dateien gespeichert haben – diese können mittels der Bitlocker-Funktion ihre Festplatte verschlüsseln. Eine andere Pro-Funktion namens Hyper V ermöglicht es, virtualisierte Betriebssysteme auf dem Rechner zu nutzen.

Ist das eine gute Gelegenheit, sich einfach einen neuen Rechner zu kaufen, auf dem Windows 10 schon installiert ist?

Das ist der teuerste, aber einfachste Weg. Allerdings mit einem winzigen Haken: Bei neuen Rechnern mit vorinstalliertem Windows 10 ist der Lizenzkey hardwaregebunden und nur in der Firmware des Rechners gespeichert. Es ist kein offizieller Weg vorgesehen, an ihn heranzukommen. Wenn der Rechner einmal endgültig kaputt geht, verfällt damit auch die Windows-Lizenz – mit dem nächsten Rechner kauft man dann eben eine neue. Wenn man dagegen einen Windows-7-Rechner auf Windows 10 updatet, hat man einen Key, mit dem man diese Windows-Version nach einem Rechnerwechsel auf dem neuen aktivieren kann.

Müssen Nutzer, die ihren Rechner behalten, Hardware aufrüsten?

Prinzipiell läuft Windows 10 auf jedem Rechner, auf dem auch Windows 7 läuft. Die Systemanforderungen sind ungefähr dieselben. Dabei läuft die neue Version eher schneller. Es kann aber sein, dass es für bestimmte Systemkomponenten keine Windows-10-Treiber mehr gibt – das kann bei Desktop-PCs zum Beispiel die Grafikkarte beziehungsweise die Onboard-Grafik sein, sodass man nur eine minimale Bildschirmauflösung sieht. Mit einer neuen, günstigen Grafikkarte lässt sich das beheben. Andere alte Hardware wie Scanner oder Drucker ohne Windows-10-Treiber muss man dann meist komplett ersetzen.

Muss es überhaupt Windows sein oder gibt es Nutzer, die vielleicht mit Linux glücklich werden?

Wer nicht auf Microsoft Office oder Adobe Creative Suite angewiesen ist, und wer nicht die modernsten PC-Spiele zocken will, kommt in der Regel auch mit einem Linux-System zurecht – für manche ist die Umgewöhnung eventuell leichter als die von Windows 7 zu 10. Die Installation ist heutzutage ebenso einfach wie bei Windows. Es gibt viele Anwendungen, die man von Windows kennt, wie Mozilla Firefox und Thunderbird, den VLC Media Player und LibreOffice.

Windows Insider sind Nutzer, die sich für das Windows-Insider-Programm angemeldet haben. Wer das tut, kann kommende Versionen von Windows 10 vorab testen und Microsoft Feedback geben. Wenn Sie selbst Windows Insider werden wollen, finden Sie hier eine Anleitung zum Anmeldevorgang.

Vorsicht: Test-Versionen von Windows können instabil sein. Wichtige Daten können aufgrund von Fehlern verloren gehen. Microsoft hat für Nutzer des Windows-10-Oktober-Updates (Version 1809) ein Update ausgeliefert, das eine Vielzahl an Fehlern behebt. Das berichtet "Chip.de".Microsoft führt die Aktualisierung unter dem Namen KB4497934. Das Update löst beispielsweise einen Fehler, der den Internet Explorer zum Absturz bringt. Auch ein Problem mit der Windows-Suche wurde behoben: Dabei wurden neu installierte Anwendungen in der Suche nicht angezeigt.

Zudem sollte die Aktualisierung ein Speicherproblem mit Office lösen und Geräte sollten Microsoft-Accounts in Zukunft erkennen, ohne dass Nutzer sich ein- und wieder ausloggen müssen. Anfang 2020 endet der Support für Windows 7. Nutzer sollten darum umsteigen. There is also something undoubtedly Scandinavian about the VivoBook S15: If Ikea had a tech section, the VivoBook S15 -- with its sleek, simple design and splash of bold color -- would be the poster child.

But that's not the only reason to get excited about the VivoBook. The ErgoLift, the clever elevated hinge introduced on the ZenBook S, makes a pleasant return. This time, the back of the keyboard tilts upward at a 3.5-degree angle. This offers a more comfortable typing experience and improves audio and heat management.

At 14.2 x 9.6 x 0.7 inches, the VivoBook S15 is relatively compact for a 15.6-inch laptop. It has a similar footprint to the sleek Lenovo Ideapad 530s (14.1 x 9.6 x 0.6 inches) and is significantly smaller than the Acer Aspire E 15 (15 x 10.2 x 1.2 inches). The VivoBook S15 is also lightweight, at 3.7 pounds. Again, that matches the Ideapad 530s (3.7 pounds) and is much lighter than the Aspire E 15 (4.9 pounds).

It's a shame that such a colorful laptop has this dull a display. The VivoBook S15's 15.6-inch, 1080p display is sharp and bright, but it disappoints in the color department.When I watched a trailer for the upcoming mystery flick Bad Times at the El Royale, the opulent furnishings in the majestic setting were crystal clear, and I could even make out the thin pinstripes in Jon Hamm's dapper suit.But at the end of the first trailer for the upcoming Captain Marvel film, the red and blue in Brie Larson's suit looked dull as fire raged around her. And although the skin tones and white balance were accurate, the sci-fi effects didn't glow with the same richness of color that you'd find on a higher-quality panel.

The VivoBook S15's display can reproduce only 68 percent of the sRGB color spectrum, which is worse than even the Lenovo Ideapad 530s (72 percent) and the Acer Aspire E 15 (74 percent) -- two laptops with particularly dull displays. The mainstream laptop average is 89 percent.Topping the mainstream-laptop average (242 nits) with a maximum brightness of 257 nits, the VivoBook S15's display should be visible outdoors, even on a sunny day. The Ideapad 530s' 255-nit display was slightly dimmer, and the Aspire E 15's 200-nit screen wasn't anywhere near as luminous.

The Asus VivoBook S15's island-style keyboard offers a comfortable typing experience, thanks to tactile keys and an innovative elevated hinge, which make up for faults like shallow key travel.With 1 millimeter of travel, the VivoBook's keys are shallow for a 15-inch laptop. (We prefer key travel of at least 1.5 mm.) However, the keyboard has several things going in its favor. The keys are well spaced and generously sized, apart from a slightly undersized number pad -- that's right; there's a number pad. And despite the low travel, there is a pleasant springiness to the keys.

What greatly improves typing on the VivoBook S15 is the laptop's elevated ErgoLift hinge, which tilts the back of the keyboard toward you at a 3.5-degree angle. That's a gentler gradient than the one on the ZenBook S, but my wrists still appreciate the natural typing position offered by the gentle slope.

Unsurprisingly, I sped through the 10fastingers.com typing test, achieving 119 words per minute with an accuracy rate of 95 percent. Those figures match my speed and accuracy typing averages.

Battery Life
At this price, it would be very hard to find a laptop that offers longer battery life than the Inspiron 11. The notebook lasted 13 hours and 39 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test (web browsing at 100 nits), which beats the runtimes of the Ideapad 110S (7:22) and the Chromebook 11 (10:38).As with most laptops we see these days, the Inspiron 11 packs a 0.9-megapixel webcam that's barely suitable for Skype calls. So although I'm recognizable in the selfies I shot in our office, there's a lot of visual noise on the wall behind me, my skin and my sweater. Further, the red wall has too much yellow in it, and I can see blotches of dark distortion in my green sweater.

This Inspiron 11 may come in a hot shade of red, but it stays cool during use. After we streamed 15 minutes of HD video on the notebook, our heat gun picked up temperatures on its touchpad (74 degrees Fahrenheit), G and H keys (84 degrees) and underside (87.5 degrees) that all fell below our 95-degree comfort threshold.

Yes, you can get a full-fledged Windows 10 machine for $199. And although some people would argue that a similarly priced Chromebook can do just as much as this sluggish PC, Chrome OS doesn't have the full Microsoft Office suite, which schools often require.

The silver lining of the Inspiron 11's paltry 32GB of storage is that it doesn't offer enough space for Dell to load it with (much) bloatware. It does pack everything we expect to see in a Dell, including the company's Power Manager Lite battery settings utility and SupportAssist system info tool. You also get Candy Crush, Sling and Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition, which you'll want to delete to reclaim the notebook's precious storage space.

The Inspiron 11 3000 comes with Dell's standard one-year limited hardware warranty, where Dell pays for shipping and the customer supplies the box. The $199 entry-level model we tested packs an Intel Celeron N3060 CPU, 2GB of RAM and a 32GB eMMC hard drive. Dell also sells the notebook with 4GB of RAM for $249.

We're astonished to see 13-plus hours of battery life from a $199 laptop, as well as audio that sounds this sweet. And while I don't love the display, it's acceptable at this price. If you can live within the limits of Chrome OS, an alternative would be the $229 Acer Chromebook 11 N7, which offers an excellent keyboard and similar performance. The Lenovo Ideapad 110S is currently on sale for $159, though it doesn't last as long on a single charge. Overall, the Dell Inspiron 11 3000 is a smart choice for users with modest demands and tight budgets.

The S15's appeal isn't skin-deep, either. With good performance, solid battery life and excellent heat management, the VivoBook S15 is a very good laptop overall, and one of the best Asus laptops. In fact, I'd wholeheartedly recommended it if not for its dull display and obnoxious amount of bloatware. Still, the VivoBook is a compelling option unlike any other on the market.

The VivoBook S15 is a beautifully crafted laptop with an exquisite design and jaw-dropping color schemes. Breaking away from the silver aluminum mold, Asus has finally given us what we've been asking for: unique color options in a nonbudget laptop.

We got our eyes on two of the VivoBook S15's five color options: star gray with yellow trim, and firmament green. The other three finishes are gunmetal, silver blue, and star gray with red trim. The green model is undoubtedly the showstopper. That particular machine has a forest-green brushed-aluminum lid and a shiny, green-plastic deck with barely visible stippled crosshatching. The chassis's turquoise trim is the bow around this beautiful package.

Dell makes the plastic Inspiron 11 3000 in kid-friendly red, white and blue designs. We tested the former, which is a shade that reminds me of a kid's race-car bed.

The notebook's glossy lid attracts as many eyes as fingerprints (tons) with a matte, off-tone Dell logo in the center of its lid. Inside, the power button is located near the top-right corner of a recessed full-size keyboard.

Weighing 2.4 pounds and measuring 0.8 inches thick, the Inspiron 11 is lighter and thinner than the Acer Chromebook 11 N7 (2.8 pounds, 0.9 inches), but thicker than the Lenovo Ideapad 110S (2.4 pounds, 0.7 inches).

Dell placed the Inspiron 11's SD card reader and its ports for power, USB 3.0 and HDMI on the left side. Its USB 2.0 port, headphone jack and Noble security lock slot are on the right.

The Inspiron 11's display gets the job done, but it isn't great for entertainment. When watching The Defenders trailer on the notebook, I noted that Luke Cage's wooden headboard looked too dark and Danny Rand's iron fist rendered with too much orange. While we're not surprised to see a 1366 x 768-pixel panel in a $200 laptop, it's another reminder of "you get what you pay for." On the other hand, the screen was good enough for me to read web pages and write in Google Docs.

According to our colorimeter, the Inspiron 11 produces only 67 percent of the sRGB spectrum. That's close to the marks from the Ideapad 110S (70 percent) and the Chromebook 11 (72 percent).
The Inspiron 11 is definitely not a laptop you'll use outdoors. The panel emits only up to 196 nits of brightness. That's dimmer than the Ideapad 110S (213 nits), the Chromebook 11 (235 nits) and the 291-nit category average. Although it was bright enough for me to read text and write on it, its colors darkened significantly when I viewed the screen from 20 degrees to the left or right.

The Inspiron 11's keyboard isn't perfect, but it does enable solid typing. When I took it out for a test on the 10fastfingers.com typing test, I click-clacked my way to 71 words per minute, which is below my 80-wpm average. Although its keys require an acceptable amount of actuation force (74 grams; we want at least 60 g), they're a little too shallow, with only 1 millimeter of travel (we look for at least 1.5 mm). While I wish it were deeper, I can appreciate that the deck doesn't flex -- a problem that plagued the Ideapad 110S.

The Inspiron 11's 3.9 x 2.1-inch buttonless touchpad accurately tracked my input and recognized three-finger Windows 10 app navigation gestures. While it felt stiff-to-the-click at first, my fingers soon accepted how much force it took to depress.I knew $200 headphones sounded good, but it turns out that $200 laptops can sound pretty great, too. The Inspiron 11 filled our large conference room with a strong rendition of Fall Out Boy's "Young And Menace," that featured accurate bass, clear vocals and sweet synths.

I recommend you keep the preloaded Dell Audio utility's default presets (speaker enhancement on, MaxxSense preset) to hear the best audio from the budget machine.

I hope you like doing one thing at a time, as the Celeron N3060 CPU and 2GB of RAM in the Inspiron 11 does not enable good multitasking.

The Inspiron 11 earned a low 1,813 on the Geekbench 4 general performance benchmark, which is close to the 1,847 earned by the Ideapad 110S (which features the same CPU and RAM).

The Inspiron 11's JetStream score of 49.4 (bigger scores are better) is similar to the 49 from the Chromebook 11 (Celeron N3060, 4GB of RAM) but lower than the 57.2 from the Ideapad 110S.
The 32GB eMMC hard drive in the Inspiron 11 needed 1 minute to duplicate 4.97GB of multimedia files, for a speed of 84.82 MBps. That's slightly faster than the 73.75 MBps eMMC drive in the Ideapad 110S.

The Inspiron 11's time of 13 minutes and 14 seconds on the OpenOffice macro test (matching 20,000 names to addresses) is a bit faster than the 13:23 mark from the Ideapad 110S.

We hope you like Windows Photos and Candy Crush Soda Saga. The Inspiron 11 enables only minor image editing or gaming, as it earned a superlow 13,297 on the Ice Storm Unlimited graphics test. That's lower than the 19,265 from the Ideapad 110S.

At this price, it would be very hard to find another laptop with this much battery life.

So kommen Sie in die Ressourcen- und Leistungsüberwachung, wo Sie circa eine Minute lang auf die Systemdiagnose warten müssen. Ist diese da, sollten Sie unter den zahlreichen Auswertungen vor allem die mit einem Kreuz markierten "Fehler" ins Auge fassen, aber auch die "Informationen" enthalten interessante Tipps, wie Sie Ihr System stabiler machen können.

Hinweis: Sie müssen mindestens Administratorenrechte haben, um den Schnell-Check zu öffnen. Sollte er sich also aufhängen, hilft es, eine Eingabeaufforderung mit Administratorrechten zu starten. Dies geschieht erneut über das Kürzel "Windows-Taste" + "R" und dann mit dem Befehl "net user administrator /active:yes".

Startzeit messen und Autostart-Programme beenden

Haben Sie die Schwachstellen Ihres Systems beseitigt, können Sie in die Tiefenanalyse Ihrer Startprobleme gehen. Dafür können Sie zunächst einmal die Startzeit Ihres PCs messen. Dafür gehen Sie in den Task-Manager, indem Sie die Tasten Strg + Alt + Entf gleichzeitig drücken. Anschließend gehen Sie auf die Registerkarte "Autostart". Falls Sie den Key nicht finden, können Sie ihn aus Ihrer aktuellen Windows-Version auslesen. Am einfachsten geht das mithilfe einer Gratis-Software, wie beispielsweise "ShowKeyPlus". Der Akku ist häufig die Achillesferse eines Notebooks. Ständiger Verschleiß belastet die Ladekapazität. Unter Windows lässt sich mit einem einfachen Trick ermitteln, wie fit die Batterie noch ist. Eben war der Akku noch voll – kurze Zeit später sind es nur noch 50 Prozent. Notebook-Batterien leiden unter stetigem Verschleiß. Mit der Zeit sinkt die Ladekapazität und dadurch auch die maximal mögliche Nutzungsdauer ohne Strom.

Wer den Akku seines Geräts prüfen will, kann unter Windows eine detaillierte Batterieanalyse durchführen. Die verrät nicht nur den Zustand des Akkus, sondern gibt auch Hinweise, wie sich die Leistung steigern lässt. Das Tool wird unter Windows 7, Windows 8 und Windows 10 über die Kommandozeile gestartet. Dazu werden Administratorrechte benötigt. So geht's:

Rufen Sie die Kommandozeile auf, indem Sie im Startmenü nach "cmd" suchen und Eingabe drücken.

Es öffnet sich die Konsole. Dort geben Sie die folgende Kommandozeile ein: "powercfg -energy -output c:\energiebericht.html"

Mit der Eingabe wird der Test gestartet. Der Vorgang dauert etwa eine Minute.

Der fertige Energiebericht wird nach Abschluss am angegebenen Ort "C:\Energiebericht.html" abgespeichert. Das heißt, Sie finden die Datei im Datei-Explorer unter "System (C:)" und können Sie mit einem Doppelklick im Browser öffnen.

Je näher sie beieinander liegen, desto besser. Eine große Differenz deutet hingegen darauf hin, dass der Akku deutlich an Leistung eingebüßt hat. Selbst wenn er zu 100 Prozent geladen ist, ermöglicht das nicht mehr die volle Nutzungsdauer wie beim Auslieferungszustand.

Nicht immer ist ein Batterietausch empfehlenswert oder überhaupt möglich. Viele neue Notebook-Modelle sind schlank gebaut und haben einen integrierten Akku, für den man nicht so ohne weiteres Ersatz im Internet bestellen kann. Unter Umständen fallen Reparaturkosten an. Dank des Batterieberichts weiß man aber immerhin, wie sich die Notebook-Laufzeit auch ohne Neukauf noch verlängern lässt. Der Arbeitsspeicher ist gut bestückt. Eine schnelle SSD ist an Bord. Und trotzdem wird die Arbeit am Rechner zur Geduldsprobe? Dann können diese Tricks helfen.

Manchmal kann es so einfach sein: Wenn am Windows 10-Rechner gar nichts mehr geht oder alles nur schleppend mit sekunden- oder gar minutenlanger Verzögerung läuft, hilft oft ein Neustart, berichtet das Fachmagazin "c't" (Ausgabe 17/19). Allerdings darf man Neustart nicht mit dem Herunterfahren verwechseln. Denn das genügt den Experten zufolge nicht, um mögliche Probleme zu beheben.

Der Hintergrund: Beim Herunterfahren werden zwar alle Programme geschlossen, das Betriebssystem selbst wird seit Windows 8 aber nur in einen Ruhezustand versetzt, aber nicht komplett beendet. Das führt den Angaben zufolge dazu, dass Windows 10 nur noch einmal im Monat neu startet – und zwar am sogenannten Patchday, an dem Windows seine Software-Updates ausliefert.

Cesar Navarro, Gadget Salvation’s operations manager, says its items go through the company's certification process, which includes hardware testing, cosmetic inspection and a software check, to make sure the gadgets are fully functional, reset to factory defaults with genuine operating systems and free of malware.

"We do not refurbish gadgets. We do not replace any components or parts," Navarro said. "Electronics that do not meet our certification standards are wiped clean of stored data and re-sold in bulk to various refurbishing companies. Gadgets that cannot be salvaged are sent to local recycling facilities."

Some outlets are even more vague. At Gazelle, which sells pre-owned MacBooks, "light refurbishment" involves a 30-point functional and cosmetic inspection ensuring that the devices are in good cosmetic condition and working order and reset to factory settings.

The Best Buy Outlet trades in refurbished, open-box and pre-owned electronics that are verified to work properly. These carry warranties from 90 days to a year with extended holiday return and exchange dates and are covered by Best Buy's Return & Exchange Promise. Best Buy says its refurbished products are repaired and restored to a like-new state and include all parts and accessories (original or comparable substitutes).

Microsoft maintains an extensive network of authorized refurbishers for individuals and businesses to link you up with a refurbished laptop.

Amazon's Certified Refurbished laptops are tested by qualified manufacturers or third-party refurbishers like PCRR so they look and work like new. They come with a minimum 90-day limited warranty. On the Amazon site, you can search via a large number of criteria from the number of cores to hard-drive size, RAM and more to get the best model for your needs.

If you or a loved one craves the very latest, cutting-edge notebook in flawless cosmetic condition and packaged to artistic perfection — and associate refurbished with icky, old and used — a pre-owned unit is going to be a tough sell.

For them, the lure of a shiny new $200 Chromebook will undoubtedly be the best way to say "I love you," but the Lynch household saw it differently: "I can only say that last year I got my wife a refurbished MacBook Air — and she was thrilled."

You'll be surprised by what you can get for $199 these days. Take the candy-colored Dell Inspiron 11 3000, an 11-inch notebook with epic battery life and solid audio. The display is on the dim side, but overall, this Dell is a great choice for a secondary machine or your kid's first PC.

Regardless of its route to the laptop spa, manufacturers or third-party authorized refurbishers typically sanitize, sort and grade the units based on physical look and functionality. They disassemble each one, checking for damaged components, battery function, screen quality, power supply, loose connections, hard drive and optical drive. If a seller does not follow a process like this, the product isn't really refurbished; it's used.

Missing or defective components — RAM, graphic cards, capacitors, ICs, hard disks — are replaced and the machine undergoes a complete data wipe. The laptop is then tested, cosmetic defects repaired, and a new OS is installed before being packaged for its new home.

That last software bit is critical, Cade said, as sometimes people buy refurbished without the OS installed — and that is a no-no. Some sellers may try to install the original OS and pass it on to buyers, but that would not be a legal license. MARs have agreements with Microsoft to copy properly licensed operating systems (primarily Windows 10) onto refurbished units.

After a refurbisher inspects, cleans, repairs and restores a used or returned laptop to factory settings, the unit is certified to be in good working order and returned to the retailer or manufacturer for sale at a discount.

Your refurbished laptop purchase should come with an assurance that the seller guarantees the product. It's not like you bought it out of the trunk of a car downtown (where I once purchased an excellent used Apple notebook). Make sure the equipment has a solid warranty — a year is considered standard these days, but it is not universal.

Some refurbished laptop warranties may be shorter than for new products and typically do not cover battery life, but each vendor is different, so read the fine print before adding the item to your shopping cart. You should get 30 days at least, and Microsoft requires a minimum 90-day warranty. Apple and refurbishers such as PCRR warranty their laptops for a year.

Also, look for a generous return policy so you get to test the machine and otherwise make sure the unit suits you. Rechargeable batteries are considered consumables and have a natural lifespan, so you'll want to make sure your refurbished laptop can hold a charge. Amazon states that new, used and refurbished products purchased from Marketplace vendors are subject to the returns' policy of the individual vendor. Some 14-day money-back return policies involve a restocking fee, so watch out.

When you or a loved one opens the box containing a refurbished laptop, you hope to see a gleaming, undamaged exterior free of scratches and dings. The keyboard should have that new keyboard look as opposed to specific keys looking shiny or worn. The screen should be clear and bright. Anything less could be a letdown.

Buyers should always look for a condition statement on the refurbished product page. The retailer usually discloses cosmetic flaws in the product description, but not always. Apple's site contains a general statement of standards linked to each refurbished product on sale, but otherwise does not have a condition report on each product page. Amazon includes a general condition linked to a pop-up page of general condition guidelines.

Microsoft refurbisher Cade said, "We try to make the product look good — especially keyboards, cases, palm rests — those things have to be in Grade A shape. If you get a laptop that doesn't look nice, or there's scratches, or the keyboard is wonky, it may be an indication that they didn't do a good job of making the computer run."

Nonetheless, cosmetic standards vary. The case could have some dings and imperfections that do not affect the unit's computing power, and buyers of refurbished laptops should be prepared for a product that does not look factory-fresh. Nonetheless, buyers should be sure to check for telltale signs that the new unit may not be up to standard: details like dead pixels on the screen, noisy hard drives, loose or squeaky hinges, or obvious signs of wear.

Tip 3: Know the Difference Between Refurbished and Certified

Online marketplaces like eBay and Craigslist do not check the condition of laptops offered for sale on their sites; they just connect buyers and sellers and both are on their own. While online trade-in services like Gadget Salvation, Gazelle.com and others offer varying degrees of certification, their standards vary and are not always transparent.

Buying a refurbished laptop can save you several hundred dollars depending on the make and model and where you shop. However, you're unlikely to find the latest-generation laptops available as refurbs, unless the model in question has been on the market for six months or more.Perhaps, because it doesn't refresh its laptops that often, Apple sells refurbished units of its 12-inch MacBooks, which launched in April 2016. A new 12-inch MacBook 1.1GHz Dual-core Intel Core m3 (from April 2016) costs $1,299 new. A refurbished model sells for $1,099 on Apple's website, covered by a one-year limited warranty. At Amazon, the same unit sells for $899.99 with a 90-day warranty.

However, if you're looking for a refurbished Dell XPS 13, you may have to settle for an older model. When we first checked, Dell Outlet was selling an XPS 13 from two generations ago, which was equipped with a Core i5-5200U CPU, 128GB SSD and 8GB of RAM, for $739 with a one- year warranty. A brand-new XPS 13 with the current-gen Core i5-7200U CPU and similar specs goes for $999, over $250 more. A few days later, the stock had changed and some newer units were available.

The model year is important, though, because both performance, battery life and Wi-Fi connectivity improved significantly in the current-generation XPS 13. That performance delta may not matter as much to you today as it will two or three years from now, when you're using a computer that's really four of five years old and much less capable of running new software.

Also, keep in mind that laptop batteries lose their ability to hold a full charge over time. So, if the refurbed model you buy was in active use for a year or two, it could have much shorter battery life than a brand-new unit.

However, if your budget is limited and you want a higher-quality laptop, like a Dell XPS 13, getting a refurbed model might be your best choice. There's no doubt you can find a good brand-new laptop at any price, even under $200, but you can likely afford a better class of system ― a superthin ultraportable or a powerful business laptop ― if you consider refurbished models.

Refurbished laptops come from a number of different sources, including businesses that trade in their old laptops, and consumers returning systems either because they decided they didn't want them or because there was a serious defect.

Failures and defects account for a certain percentage of refurbs. According to a Consumer Reports Reliability Survey of 58,000 subscribers between 2010 and 2015, new Apple laptops fail at a rate of 7 to 9 percent per year, while Windows machine-failure rates hovered around the 15 percent range.

"Microsoft refurbishers mostly work with enterprise equipment, but even though the laptop started out as enterprise, you get it at the consumer price," said Willie Cade, founder and CEO of PC Rebuilders and Recyclers, a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher (MAR). "If it's for work, shopping, email and other basic tech uses, refurbished is absolutely the way to go."

But that's not the only route: According to Jim Lynch, TechSoup Global's electronics recycling/reuse director, buying refurbished from name-brand computing companies is also a good way to go.

"The big OEMs are quite good in this area. Since Apple, Dell and HP put their names behind their refurbished equipment, they generally make sure that the IT Asset Management companies that do the refurbishment and reconditioning do good work," he said. Thus, either the laptop manufacturer or authorized refurbishers are the best sources for obtaining your purchase.
