Ein persönliches Hintergrundbild lässt sich so einstellen: Rechtsklick auf eine freie Fläche des Desktops und im Menü "Anpassen" anklicken. Im nächsten Fenster lässt sich ein Hintergrund auswählen. Nun einfach im rechten Auswahlmenü "Bild" auswählen und auf den grauen Button "Durchsuchen" klicken und das passende Bild von Festplatte, Stick oder aus der Cloud auswählen.

Wer seinen PC intensiv nutzt, hat nicht selten mehrere Programme gleichzeitig geöffnet. Übersicht darüber bietet Windows 10 mit der Funktion Snap Assist. Das große Windows-10-Startmenü macht nicht jedem Benutzer Freude. Wem die Gewöhnung schwerfällt oder gar dem klassischen Startmenü nachtrauert, kann mit einem Programm nachhelfen: "Die Freeware Classic Shell versucht das Windows-XP-Startmenü nachzuahmen", sagt Jan Sebastian Schüßler, Experte für Betriebssysteme beim "c't"-Magazin. Unter classicshell.net ist die Startmenü-Freeware erhältlich.

Etwas Zeit zur Durchsicht der vielen Einstellungs- und Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten sollten Benutzer aber mitbringen. "Dann kommt man schon so sehr nah an die Optik des guten alten Windows-Startmenüs heran", so Schüßler.

Der PC, lange totgesagt, ist wieder im Trend. Erstmals seit sechs Jahren steigt der Absatz. Ob das so bleibt, ist fraglich. Denn viele Nutzer bevorzugen ein anderes Gerät.

Dazu tippt man "about:config" (ohne Anführung) in die Adresszeile und setzt dann beim Eintrag "xpinstall.signatures.required" den Wert von "true" auf "false".

In einer Mitteilung schreibt das Unternehmen, dass sich besonders europäische Kunden als Folge der Datenschutzgrundverordnung (DSGVO) besorgt über gesammelte Daten gezeigt hätten. Als Reaktion darauf möchte Microsoft über drei Zugänge seinen Kunden mehr Transparenz und Kontrolle über ihre Daten geben.

Daten sollen kategorisiert werden

Zunächst sollen die gesammelten Daten in zwei Gruppen eingeteilt werden: notwendige (required) und optionale. Notwendige Informationen braucht Microsoft, damit Produkte wie das Betriebssystem Windows oder Office-Software richtig funktionieren. Darunter fallen etwa Begriffe bei Suchanfragen, aber auch Geräte-IP und -typ.

Optionale Daten sollen zur Produktverbesserung genutzt werden. Microsoft Produkte werden jedoch voll umfänglich funktionieren – unabhängig davon, ob Kunden der Sammlung von optionalen Daten zustimmen.
Microsoft will außerdem besser dokumentieren, welche Daten für Produkte gesammelt werden – und in welche Kategorie die Informationen fallen. Zudem soll die Dokumentation für Kunden auch einfach zu finden, aber auch einfacher zu verstehen sein.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 514’s low price brings some limitations — you won’t find a budget Chromebook in this price range with a fast solid-state drive or an optional discrete GPU — but they aren’t necessities for the typical Chrome OS user. Its CPU isn’t blazing fast either, but it’s quick enough for everyday tasks.

It also has a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) resolution IPS display that’s more than good enough for web browsing and productivity work, 8GB of RAM, and 64GB of eMMC flash storage. The keyboard is particularly noteworthy with a very satisfying feel when typing and the backlighting is tastefully done so you can easily run this device in the dark.

You will have to get used to Chrome OS too. It’s not as functional as Windows, and it works best when you have an active internet connection, but it’s much more fleshed out today than it was in the past. If you find yourself using a lot of Google web services and watching streaming services like Netflix, a Chromebook like the 514 could be a great way to save a lot of money on your next upgrade.

Although gaming laptops are typically quite expensive, the Dell G3 Gaming Laptop is a great example of why they don’t need to be. Starting at $730, you get an Intel Core i5-9300 CPU, a GTX 1050 graphics chip, 8GB of RAM, and 1TB of hybrid-HDD storage, with options for faster CPUs, more powerful graphics, extra and faster storage, and memory if you don’t mind spending a little more. Every model comes with a 15.6-inch, 1080p IPS display. For $949, you’ll get a fantastic machine with a proper SSD boot drive and upgraded GTX 1650 graphics card.

With decent build quality and good performance in a relatively light chassis, the G3 offers an all-around solid gaming package at an impressively competitive price. It does have its weak points, most notably a less than stunning display and thick chassis — it’s dull, but still looks good enough if you crank up the settings. Similarly, the storage options aren’t the quickest, but those are sacrifices that are worth making to keep the price down on such a capable gaming machine.

There are far better gaming laptops out there, but we’d struggle to find one that’s as powerful as Dell’s G3 at this price point. It’s a fantastic, budget gaming machine.

Finding a laptop for video editing under $1,000 isn’t easy. When it comes to video editing, the more cores the better, and a discrete graphics card is a good idea too. The best video editing laptops like the Dell XPS 15 and MacBook Pro 16-inch will cost you well over $2,000.

We don’t usually advise buying older hardware, but if you’re on a tight budget, a previous generation Dell G5 gaming laptop is your best bet. For just $730, you get a six-core laptop with a discrete GTX 1050 Ti graphics card. These are each a generation back from the most current, but you won’t notice a huge drop in performance — especially not for over $300 you’re saving over the new models.

The Alienware m15 R3– as well as the larger, 17-inch m17 R3 model — tops out with Intel’s eight-core 10th-gen processors and Nvidia’s GeForce RTX graphics or AMD Radeon graphics, making them ideal for enthusiast gamers who need performance on the go.

The Alienware Area-51m R2 has also been updated. Like its predecessor, the second generation of this bulky laptop with desktop-class performance packs in a desktop Intel processor — up to a 10-core Intel 10th Gen Core i9-10900K — alongside Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2080 Super graphics. Unlike the more mainstream m15 and m17 notebooks, the Area-51m goes full throttle with Nvidia’s RTX cards, and you won’t find any Max-Q design here for amped-up performance. The Alienware Area-51m R2 launches on June 9 with pricing starting at $3,050.

Lastly, Dell also updated its G3 and G5 gaming laptops, with prices as low as $779. Both G3 and G5 come in quad-core or six-core 10th-gen Intel configurations, topping out with a Core i7-10750H processor. These gaming notebooks come with a 15-inch FHD display with anti-glare coating that can be upgraded to a panel with fast 144Hz refresh. While not the lightest notebook on the market at 5.18 pounds, the G3 delivers plenty of performance with its discrete graphics, which tops out with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060. The G5 offers up to an RTX 2070 Max-Q.

However, there’s a reason companies don’t put expensive, sweltering Core i9s in just any old laptop. First of all, all eight cores can’t be used efficiently by most games, so that won’t do you much good. Then there’s an obvious thermal problem that Asus and AMD haven’t properly dealt with. The Zephyrus G14 is a loud little laptop. When playing games or running heavy applications, it’s distracting. But that’s forgivable.

My problem is that even at idle (and in Silent mode), the Zephyrus G14’s fans are constantly whirring. The result is an irritating coil whine that never goes away. That reduces my desire to use the G14 as a laptop I want to use every day.

Gaming performance

My Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 review unit has an Nvidia RTX 2060 for graphics, with options for the GTX 1660 Ti and GTX 1650 in cheaper configurations. The G14 is the smallest laptop to include an RTX 2060, a graphics card about as powerful as a desktop GTX 1070 video card. The result is fluid, responsive gaming in just about every title I tried.

Battlefield V, Fortnite, and Civilization VI all played at well over 60 frames per second (FPS) in 1080p at maxed-out settings. That is on par with laptops like the Dell G7 15, which is 2 pounds heavier. It beat the same RTX 2060 in the ROG Zephyrus M in every game, despite being lighter and smaller in almost every regard.

When you turn the settings down a bit, performance truly shines. Fortnite landed at 118 FPS, while Civilization VI hit 132. It’s consistently 10 FPS behind the Razer Blade, which we tested with a more powerful GPU, the RTX 2070 Max-Q.

On more CPU-intensive tests, the Zephyrus G14 fares even better. It lasted 4 hours in the Basemark battery test, which provides a view of battery life when running heavier applications. Add 10 hours of local video playback on one charge and you have the best battery life you can get out of a gaming laptop.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 challenges other thin gaming laptops, like the Razer Blade. The G14 offers more than enough power for most PC gamers. On top of that, thanks to its eight-core processor, it’s one of the best content creation and video-editing laptops you can buy at this price.

Does it also work as a laptop in its own right? The constant hum of the fans and lack of a webcam aren’t ideal for everyday laptop usage, however, the G14’s adequate battery life and display make it a good choice for work and travel.

Are there any alternatives?

No gaming laptop is as small and powerful as the Zephyrus G14. If you go less powerful and even smaller, you can opt for something like the Razer Blade Stealth.

When you move into the world of 15-inch laptops, your options expand quickly. The Razer Blade 15 and MSI GS65 are as thin as the G14, though heavier and larger. They’re also considerably more powerful, offering graphics options up to the RTX 2080 Max-Q. The closest alternative in price is the Predator Helios 300, which offers a similar configuration, though with less processor cores and a far larger chassis.

Lastly, if you want a 15-inch laptop for content creation that can game on the side, I recommend the Dell XPS 15. It’s not as capable a gaming machine as the G14, but is a more balanced option for content creators.

Laut Microsoft soll die neue Kommandozeile "neu, modern, schnell, effizient und leistungsfähig" sein. Mithilfe des Terminals können Nutzer dem System verschiedene Befehle geben, die über die Funktionen in den Einstellungen hinausgehen. Beispielsweise lassen sich mit der Kommandozeile schnell Informationen zum Netzwerk abrufen, wie die IP-Adresse.

Eine Besonderheit des "Windows Terminal" ist beispielsweise, dass Nutzer mehrere Registrierkarten in einem Fenster öffnen können, so wie in einem Browser. Auch werden dank einer neuen Engine mehr Schriftarten, Zeichen sowie Emojis unterstützt und der Text schneller gerendert, also dargestellt. Nutzern bietet das "Windows Terminal" die Möglichkeit, das Tool zu individualisieren und verschiedene Profile anzulegen.

"Windows Terminal" ist Open Source, das heißt, der Code kann von allen Nutzern eingesehen werden. Microsoft hat den Quellcode auf der Entwicklerplattform "Github" veröffentlicht. Ab Sommer 2019 sollen Insider auf das neue Terminal zugreifen können. Ab Winter 2019 soll es für alle Nutzer zum Download verfügbar sein.

Was kann ich mit der Kommandozeile machen?

In Kommandozeilen wie cmd oder dem "Windows Terminal" können Sie direkt mit Ihrem System kommunizieren, ihm Befehle geben und Informationen anfordern. Dazu müssen Sie aber Befehle nutzen, die der Computer versteht. Minimale Englischkenntnisse sind hierbei hilfreich.

Um eine Kommandozeile wie Command Prompt (cmd) zu starten, klicken Sie die "Windows"-Taste und tippen Sie "cmd" in die Suchleiste. Um Windows PowerShell zu starten, klicken Sie unter Windows 10 mit rechter Maustaste auf das Windows-Symbol und wählen Sie "Windows PowerShell".

Falls es beim Mai-Update für Windows 10 zu Problemen kommt, kann es an den Einstellungen des Betriebssystems liegen. Für diesen Fall hat Microsoft ein Hilfswerkzeug bereitgestellt.

Auf Windows-10-Rechnern können bestimmte Einstellungen und andere Umstände dazu führen, dass größere Funktionsupdates nicht automatisch installiert werden. Bevor Ende Mai das nächste größere Update (Windows-10-Version 1903) verteilt wird, lohnt es sich deshalb zu prüfen, ob überhaupt schon die letzte große Aktualisierung aus dem Oktober 2018 (Version 1809) eingespielt ist. Hier rät Microsoft Nutzern zu schauen, auf welchem Versionsstand ihr System ist. Dazu gibt man einfach "winver" (ohne Anführungszeichen) in das Eingabefeld neben der Windows-Start-Schaltfläche ein.

Handelt es sich bei der installierten Version noch um 1803, sollten Nutzer den sogenannten Update-Assistenten herunterladen. Das Programm lädt und installiert ausstehende Funktionsaktualisierungen.

Fehlermeldungen bei der Installation ließen sich häufig vermeiden, indem man vorher externe USB-Speicher abzieht oder SD-Speicherkarten entfernt. Virenscanner oder Optimierungsprogramme werden vor dem Update am besten deaktiviert. Und vor einem großen Update schade es nicht, seine Daten auf einem externen Datenträger zu sichern.

Mozilla hat ein Problem mit deaktivierten Firefox-Erweiterungen per Update gelöst. Nutzer, deren Add-ons mit einem Hinweis auf Zertifikatsprobleme auf einmal nicht mehr funktionierten, müssen nichts weiter tun.Nach der Installation des Updates auf Version 66.0.4 sollten die Erweiterungen sowohl auf Rechnern als auch auf Android-Mobilgeräten wieder funktionieren.

Sie können einen Bildausschnitt vergrößern, indem sie das Foto zuschneiden. Das geht so: Klicken Sie auf das Bild und öffnen Sie das ⇒ "Bearbeiten & Erstellen"-Menü. Unter dem Punkt "Bearbeiten" findet sich die Funktion ⇒ "Zuschneiden und drehen". Damit können Sie nun den Bildausschnitt wählen, den Sie vergrößern möchten. Entspricht der Zuschnitt Ihren Vorstellungen? Dann klicken Sie auf ⇒ "Kopie speichern".

Dateigröße minimieren

Hochauflösende Fotos sind oft zu groß, um sie als E-Mail-Anhang zu verschicken. Um die Dateigröße zu minimieren reicht in der Foto-App ein Rechtsklick auf das Bild. Anschließend können Sie ⇒ "Größe ändern" auswählen und die gewünschte Dateigröße angeben. Achten Sie darauf, der verkleinerte Bild als Kopie zu speichern, damit das Original in seiner Pracht erhalten bleibt. Vergeben Sie dazu einen neuen Dateinamen.

Video-Collagen erstellen

Früher musste man seine Bilder in mühevoller Handarbeit zu Video-Collagen zusammenstellen. Wollte man dazu noch eine musikalische Untermalung oder Texteinblendungen, war eine Spezial-Software notwendig. Heute kann das alles mit wenigen Klicks in der Windows-Foto-App erledigt werden.

Klicken Sie dazu auf den Reiter ⇒"Neu" im Menü der Foto-App. Nun können Sie zwischen zwei Optionen wählen: "Automatisches Video mit Musik" stellt die ausgewählten Fotos selbständig zusammen und Sie können das fertige Video mit einem Klick auf "Bearbeiten" nach Ihren Wünschen gestalten. Bei der Option "Benutzerdefiniertes Video mit Musik" haben Sie von Anfang an mehr Gestaltungsfreiraum.

Für "Libre Office" ist ein wichtiges Sicherheits-Update veröffentlicht worden. Die Aktualisierung der Bürosoftware-Suite behebt eine Schwachstelle, die das Ausführen von Schadcode mit Benutzerrechten ermöglicht, erklärt das Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI).

Offen wie ein Scheunentor oder verschwiegen wie ein Grab? Wer wissen möchte, ob sein Router und das darauf laufende Firewall-Programm das Heimnetzwerk gut gegen mögliche Angreifer abschirmen, sollte einen Netzwerkcheck starten – wie etwa den von "Heise Security" (hier klicken – wir empfehlen, die Seite nur im Desktop-Browser aufzurufen). Dieser Test wird in Zusammenarbeit mit der Datenschutzbehörde Niedersachsen angeboten und kann direkt im Browser durchgeführt werden.

Der Portscan gibt Aufschluss darüber, wie sichtbar oder unsichtbar der Router im Internet ist. Ein vollständiger Check überprüft den Router zudem auf bekannte Sicherheitslücken. Grün hinterlegte Testergebnisse bedeuten "alles in Ordnung". Rot bedeutet, dass Handlungsbedarf besteht.

Offene Ports schließen

Router nutzen sogenannte Ports, um verschiedene Netzwerkdienste empfangen zu können. Der Portscan erkennt automatisch, ob Ports oder Dienste im Heimnetzwerk aus dem Internet heraus erreichbar sind, die zum Surfen und für den E-Mail-Verkehr eigentlich nicht benötigt werden.

Viele Probleme lassen sich zudem durch die Aktualisierung der Router-Software (Firmware-Update) beheben. Dadurch werden auch bekannte Schwachstellen durch den Hersteller geschlossen.

Windows-Nutzer erhalten in Zukunft eine neue Kommandozeile: "Windows Terminal". Es soll die verschiedenen Kommandozeilen von Windows – Command Prompt (cmd), PowerShell und Windows Subsystem für Linux (WSL) – vereinigen. Das berichtet Microsoft in einem Blog-Beitrag.

Mal eben schnell eine E-Mail beantworten, ohne den laufenden Film zu unterbrechen – auch das geht mit der Windows 10-App für "Filme & TV". Microsoft hat ihr nämlich einen "Minimodus" verpasst. Diesen finden Sie in der rechten unteren Ecke des Videofensters.

Wenn Sie darauf klicken, läuft das Video in einem kleinen Fenster im Vordergrund weiter, während Sie andere Anwendungen öffnen und bedienen können. Das Minifenster können Sie mit der Maus an jede beliebige Stelle auf dem Display schieben.

Wenn Sie Filme nicht in der Video-App, sondern im Browser-Fenster gucken, können Sie dieses mit der Tastenkombination "Windows-Taste" + "Pfeil nach unten" minimieren. Weitere Shortcuts finden Sie hier.

Seit dem Herbst-Update von 2018 unterstützt Windows 10 auch die Wiedergabe von Videos in HDR-Qualität. HDR steht für "High Dynamic Range" und bedeutet, dass Helligkeitsunterschiede detailreicher wiedergegeben werden. Wenn Ihnen also ein Film zu dunkel vorkommt, könnte es daran liegen, dass der Bildschirm nicht richtig eingestellt ist.

Die HDR-Wiedergabe lässt sich in den Systemeinstellungen unter "Anzeige" aktivieren. Eine Schritt für Schritt Anleitung finden Sie hier. Für unterwegs: Akkulaufzeit des Notebooks erhöhen

Unterwegs Filme oder Serien auf dem Notebook anzuschauen, ist unter Reisenden ein beliebter Zeitvertreib. Die Videowiedergabe benötigt im normalen Betrieb aber viel Energie. Damit der Akku trotzdem möglichst lange durchhält, kann man in den Einstellungen von Windows 10 unter "Apps/Videowiedergabe" den Eintrag "Für Akkulaufzeit optimieren" auswählen.

Filter setzen

Sie können Fotos direkt in der Foto-App bearbeiten. Zur Auswahl stehen unter anderem auch verschiedene Filter, die das Bild in Schwarz-Weiß-Aufnahmen verwandeln oder mit einem coolen Vintage-Look versehen.

Fast-paced shooters like Battlefield V are a great fit for the Zephyrus G14, which comes with a fast 120Hz refresh rate display. And 98 FPS on Medium and 70 at Ultra in Battlefield V are not a bad look. The G14 even makes a tough game like Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey playable, managing 64 FPS at High settings.

It can’t be overstated how big of a deal this is for AMD. The company isn’t often featured in laptops this powerful, nor in one this ambitious.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 stands out. The laptop made headlines at CES 2020 with its AniMe Matrix Display design on the cover, where LEDs light the laptop’s display lid with patterns and designs. You can even customize them to display text, animations, or logos of your choice.

It’s a cool feature that’ll cost you an extra $500, and my review unit didn’t include it. But even the standard white version, without the AniMe Matrix Display, is beautiful. The matrix of dots adds a splash of interest, and the white color is still unique in its own right.

That said, the G14’s design doesn’t feel cohesive. The lid is white, the keyboard deck and chassis is gray, and the bezels around the display are black. It feels like parts from a few different laptops stitched together into one device. The all-gray option fares a bit better.

The display is a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution IPS panel. It’s nothing special in terms of brightness of contrast, but doesn’t have any major weaknesses, either. Following the trend we’ve seen lately, it features accurate colors and a decent color gamut, showing 77% of the AdobeRGB color space.

The speakers, though, could use some more gusto. I had high hopes, as the G14 includes a pair of upward-facing tweeters and two woofers at the hinge. They’re loud enough, but a modern iPhone sounds better. Between the speakers and the coil whine, you’ll want to pair the G14 with a decent set of headphones.

The inputs are a mixed bag. Let’s start with the good stuff. The touchpad is excellent, which surprised me. A touchpad in a gaming laptop this good is hard to find, since many manufacturers assume you’ll be using an external mouse. Not here. That’s a good call, since the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is small enough to use as an everyday laptop.

The keyboard is also spacious, offering the typical ROG layout, with keys like volume control inserted above the function row. Larger ROG laptops include extra keys along the right side, but they’ve been left out here. This is smart, as I’d rather have a comfortable layout than a page up and page down key.

While typing isn’t a slog, there’s definitely room for improvement. Key presses have a lot of travel, but the bottoming out action is mushy. It makes for an imprecise typing experience that grows weary over time. The keyboard backlighting is also limited. It’s a single-zone and not customizable, which is rare in a gaming laptop these days. The backlighting that is offered is uneven, lighting some keys better than others.

The power button is located above the standard layout and includes a fingerprint reader built-in. That’s important because, strangely, the Zephyrus G14 doesn’t include a built-in webcam. That means no Windows Hello facial recognition, and no Zoom calls. I get the idea — this isn’t a laptop made for video calls. Still, with its potential crossover appeal as a content creation and business laptop, it’s an odd thing to leave out.

Gaming laptops aren’t known for battery life, even when you aren’t gaming. The Zephyrus G14 doesn’t change that, though it does last longer than other gaming laptops. The G14 managed just under 6 hours under a light web-browsing load. That doesn’t compare well to a modern ultrabook like the XPS 13 or HP Spectre x360, which can last up to 10 hours on the same test.

However, for a gaming laptop, it’s at the top of its class. It’s a half hour more than the Dell G7 Gaming Laptop and the Razer Blade, and hours ahead of laptops that have G-Sync like the Zephyrus M and Alienware M15.

How’s that possible? One very special component is at the heart of the G14: AMD’s Ryzen 9 4900HS. This eight-core, sixteen-thread chip is where the magic is.

The Zephyrus G14 has created a new class of gaming laptop, and starts at just $1,050. But is this new breed of gaming laptop what people want?

Asus and AMD want the G14 to be a laptop that’s just as portable as any other laptop — one you can take to school, take to work, and play games on everywhere in between.

Laptops like the Razer Blade and MSI GS65 have tried cutting out the thickness from their machines, but they’ve maintained a large screen size — 15 or 17 inches, respectively. That’s where the G14 deviates.

With a 14.0-inch display and thin bezels around the top and sides, a significant amount of girth is cut right out of the body of the laptop. That means the G14 is smaller than most gaming laptops in just about every measure, including weight. At 3.5 pounds, it’s 19% lighter than the 16-inch MacBook Pro and 24% lighter than the Razer Blade 15. The small size helps with weight, as does the magnesium alloy chassis, which is much lighter than full aluminum.

As someone who primarily uses a 13-inch laptop on a daily basis, I was shocked by the G14’s footprint when I opened the box. At just 12.8 x 8.7 inches, its footprint is around 5% smaller than a 13-inch MacBook Pro.

It’s also thin, though it’s matched by the current Razer Blade at 0.70 inches. When open, the G14 does feel thicker than it should due to the lifted hinge, which adds an extra 0.6 inches and improved airflow.

The only gaming laptop that can match the size of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is Razer’s Blade Stealth, which is a 13-inch laptop with up to a GTX 1650 GPU. It’s significantly smaller, but its graphics and CPU options are much more limited as well. The Zephyrus G14 is in a class of its own.

The unit I tested rings up at $1,450, and sits right in the middle of the configuration stack. The Zephyrus G14 is the launch vehicle for AMD’s Ryzen 4000 chips. in particular the Ryzen 9 H-series eight-core chips meant for powerful laptops and gaming machines.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 doesn’t use the standard 45-watt CPU, but instead opts for a specialized 35-watt variant known as the Ryzen 9 4900HS, along with 16GB of RAM (configurable up to 32GB). The “S” stands for slim, so it can be cooled within the small chassis of the Zephyrus G14.

Don’t worry. That doesn’t mean performance is handicapped. This Ryzen processor is insanely fast, especially if you feed it a task that can use its eight cores and 16 threads. That includes content creation, whether it’s 3D modeling or video editing.

For this kind of workload, it’s hardly worth comparing to other gaming laptops, most of which use a six-core Intel Core i7-9750H. They just can’t keep up. The eight-core Core i9-9880HK is a better competitor, though it’s mostly reserved for high-end content creation laptops like the Dell XPS 15, MacBook Pro 16-inch, or ThinkPad X1 Extreme.

But here’s the crazy thing. Whether it’s in benchmarking or real-life tests, the Asus G14 still wins over laptops with an Intel Core i9-9880HK processor. It beats the 16-inch MacBook Pro in Cinebench R20 multi-core by a whopping 25%. It even encoded a 4K file in Handbrake 11% faster, matching the performance of the Dell XPS 15.

You’ll find more power in thicker workstation-type machines with the Core i9, but for a laptop this small and light, the G14 is record-breaking.

The most popular CPUs for laptops today are Intel’s eighth-generation Whiskey Lake processors that include low-power Y-series and fast and efficient U-series. For most productivity Windows 10 users, we recommend a minimum of the Core i5-8265U, which is a highly capable processor that can handle most productivity tasks without slowing down. It’s also efficient, meaning you’ll enjoy great battery life. If you skip back to older generations of Intel processors, you’ll find slower clocks speeds and fewer cores at your disposal, meaning you may run into bottlenecks while multitasking or running multi-threaded applications.

Chromebook running on Google’s more efficient Chrome OS can utilize slower processors and still perform well, such as an Intel Core i3 or even a Pentium processor. Not many Chromebooks bother with the fastest Core i7 CPU.

If you’re looking for a gaming or content creation laptop, we recommend either last year’s 8th-generation or the most current 9th-gen, ultra-power H-series CPUs. You’ll find these in laptops ranging from the MacBook Pro 15 to the Razer Blade.

The sweet spot for memory for both laptops and desktops is 8GB. You can check out our story “How much RAM do I need” for the details. But generally speaking, 8GB will suffice whether you’re running Windows, MacOS, or even the more lightweight Chrome OS. And, it will provide plenty of headroom for multitasking and more demanding applications. If you’re doing high-end photo or video editing, then we recommend 16GB (or more).

Should I buy a laptop or a tablet?

As we mentioned above, you can get a tablet that can morph into a laptop just by attaching a keyboard. And so if you really want the power of Windows 10 in a form factor that’s easier to carry around, then you can select a tablet 2-in-1. We don’t recommend these devices as tablets in themselves, as the Windows 10 tablet mode is still fairly limited. If you want the utmost in simplicity and an even smaller device, then a pure tablet like the iPad can be great for web browsing, triaging email, consuming media, and other tasks that don’t require the full power of a “real” PC.

So, where doesn’t a tablet work? If you’re a hardcore gamer, need a laptop that can churn through video and huge photos, or have a need for multitasking. Tablets are very thin and tend to use slower CPUs and integrated graphics that won’t accelerate creative applications or power modern games. Meanwhile, the software on these devices isn’t as full-featured as a desktop operating system like Windows 10 or MacOS.

Should my laptop have USB-C?

The short answer is: Yes, you should try to pick up a laptop with at least one USB-C port. This is the latest in connectivity that ensures that you can connect to legacy devices (via adapters) while being covered for future devices as well. USB-C can provide for data transfer, power, and display connections, and USB-C hubs can greatly extend how many peripherals you can easily connect to your laptop.

The good thing is that laptops, even budget models, increasingly include USB-C. The longer answer is that not only do you want USB-C, but you want ports that support the even more powerful Thunderbolt 3 standard. Thunderbolt 3 provides up to 40 gigabits per second (Gb/s) over a single connection, and it can support multiple 4K displays and external GPU enclosures that can greatly improve graphics performance. Lately, even laptops under $1,000 sport Thunderbolt 3 ports.

The ROG Zephyrus G14 is unlike any gaming laptop you’ve ever owned. Though it packs an Nvidia RTX 2060, it weighs just 3.5 pounds. It’s not much larger than a 14-inch laptop you’d see issued at work.

Denn auch die Sicherheitslücke "Bluekeep" kann ohne das Zutun des Nutzers ausgenutzt werden – etwa für einen Angriff mit Schadsoftware, die sich wurmartig weiterverbreitet, genau wie WannaCry.Ein aktives Ausnutzen der Schwachstelle konnte das BSI zwar bislang nicht feststellen. Mit ihrer Veröffentlichung sei aber nun davon auszugehen, dass Angreifer sehr schnell eine entsprechende Schadsoftware entwickeln.

Entsprechende Methoden, sogenannte Exploits, werden bereits entwickelt und getestet, tippen Experten – bisher noch im Geheimen. Es sei aber nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis das Wissen in Umlauf gerät und von Hackern gezielt oder in der Breite eingesetzt wird. Ist ein solcher Computerwurm erst einmal unterwegs, wird es schwer, ihn wieder zu stoppen.

Was zu tun ist: Updates dringend nachholen

Kein Wunder also, dass sich Behörden wie das BSI, die US-amerikanische NSA, Microsoft und Sicherheitsexperten aus aller Welt in dieser Sache einig sind und Windows-Nutzer dazu ermahnen, die nötigen Updates zu installieren. Jedes aktuell noch ungeschützte Gerät gefährdet andere, selbst wenn diese bereits aktualisiert wurden.

Unmittelbar nach Bekanntwerden der Sicherheitslücke hat Microsoft Notfallupdates für die betroffenen Systeme veröffentlicht. Das BSI rät außerdem dazu, den "Remote Desktop"-Dienst zu deaktivieren, falls dieser nicht gebraucht wird. Der betroffene Fernwartungsdienst ist laut BSI in der Regel zwar nicht standardmäßig aktiviert. Er werde aber für die Fernwartung einer Vielzahl von Servern verwendet, teils auch über das Internet. Um die Verbindung zu deaktivieren, gehen Sie so vor:

Microsoft geht nach eigenen Angaben davon aus, dass weltweit noch immer fast eine Million an das Internet angeschlossene Computer verwundbar sind. Auch Firmennetzwerke seien massiv bedroht. "Es braucht nur einen verwundbaren Computer, der mit dem Internet verbunden ist, um ein potenzielles Einfallstor in diese Firmennetzwerke zu öffnen", warnt das Unternehmen in einer Mitteilung. "Von dort aus kann sich die hochentwickelte Schadsoftware verbreiten und weitere Computer im gesamten Unternehmen infizieren."

Das in der Nacht zum Dienstag präsentierte Modell aus der Reihe ThinkPad X1 hat aufgefaltet einen Bildschirm mit einer Diagonale von 13,3 Zoll (rund 33,8 cm). Das Gerät hat keine Hardware-Tastatur, dafür füllt das Display die gesamte Oberfläche aus. Lenovo stellt einen Marktstart für das Jahr 2020 in Aussicht.

Bisher haben Samsung und Huawei Auffalt-Smartphones präsentiert. Das rund 2.000 Euro teure Galaxy Fold von Samsung sollte sogar schon Ende April in den Handel kommen, der Marktstart wurde jedoch auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben, nachdem Journalisten mehrere Testgeräte kaputt gingen. Windows-Nutzer erhalten im Wochentakt Updates für ihr System. Beispielsweise hat Microsoft erst am 14. Mai eine Aktualisierung für Windows-10-Geräte verteilt: Die korrigiert verschiedene Fehler und rüstet den Computer gegen die neu entdeckte Sicherheitslücke in Intel-Prozessoren. Doch viele Nutzer melden Probleme mit der Aktualisierung vom 14. Mai, das Microsoft als Update KB4494441 bezeichnet. Unter anderem wird bei manchen Usern KB4494441 zweimal in ihrer Update-Liste angezeigt. Dazu melden Nutzer, dass sie die Aktualisierung mehrmals herunterladen und auch den Computer mehrmals neustarten mussten.

Auch auf seiner Support-Seite zu KB4494441 listet Microsoft den Fehler. Laut dem Konzern müssen Nutzer aber dazu nichts unternehmen. Dass das Update zweimal gelistet wird, sollte dem Computer auch keine Schwierigkeiten bereiten.

Weitere Probleme bekannt

Daneben nennt Microsoft aber andere Probleme, die durch KB4494441 verursacht werden können. Unter anderem kann das System einen Fehler zeigen, wenn Nutzer versuchen, ein Dokument aus Microsoft Edge zu drucken. Microsoft rät als Lösung, dafür einen anderen Browser zu nutzen.

Auch das Umbenennen von Dateien in sogenannten Cluster Shared Volumes (CVS) kann eine Fehlermeldung verursachen. Beim CVS handelt es sich um ein Feature in Windows Server. Als Lösung nennt Microsoft, die Aktion als Administrator auszuführen.

Wer zudem asiatische Sprachpakete auf dem Rechner installiert hat, kann den Fehler "0x800f0982 - PSFX_E_MATCHING_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND". erhalten. Microsoft rät, das Sprachpaket neu zu installieren. Mehr Infos zum Update KB4494441 finden Sie auf der Seite von Microsoft (englisch).

Laut einer Analyse der Sicherheitsfirma Bitsight sind noch immer rund 800.000 Windows-Rechner nicht gegen Angriffe gewappnet, die eine Schwachstelle namens "Bluekeep" ausnutzen. Das Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) geht davon aus, dass es allein in Deutschland noch mindestens 14.000 verwundbare Computer gibt.

"Es muss davon ausgegangen werden, dass sich dahinter eine Vielzahl an gefährdeten Computer-Arbeitsplätzen verbirgt, die nicht direkt an das Internet angeschlossen sind, etwa in Unternehmensnetzwerken", heißt es dazu in einer Mitteilung des BSI. "Die tatsächliche Zahl gefährdeter Computer dürfte daher deutlich größer sein."

Die Sicherheitslücke klafft im Windows-Fernwartungsdienst (Remote Desktop Protocol, RDP). Betroffen sind alle alten Windows-Versionen bis Windows 7 und Windows Server 2008. Nicht betroffen sind Windows 8 und Windows 10.

Weltweites Bedrohungsszenario

Bereits seit Mai warnt Microsoft eindringlich vor der gefährlichen Schwachstelle in älteren Windows-Systemen. Es wurden Sicherheitsupdates bereitgestellt, aber offensichtlich noch nicht auf allen betroffenen Rechnern installiert.

Auch Microsoft hat sämtliche Huawei-Produkte aus seinen amerikanischen Online-Shops genommen, wie "The Verge" berichtet. Ob die Maßnahme im Zusammenhang mit dem verhängten Huawei-Bann steht, ist noch unklar. Microsoft ließ entsprechende Anfragen unbeantwortet. In den Geschäften sollen das Matebook X Pro und das Matebook 13 weiterhin verkauft werden. Auch in Deutschland sind die Produkte nach wie vor erhältlich.

Ähnlich wie Google müsste Microsoft dem China-Konzern außerdem auch den Zugang zu seiner Software versperren. Damit wäre beispielsweise das Betriebssystem Windows auf Huawei-Notebooks unbenutzbar. Ob es dazu kommt, ist noch unklar. Bisher hat sich der Windows-Konzern noch nicht dazu geäußert.

Die neuen Handelsrestriktionen traten am Freitag der vergangenen Woche in Kraft, als die US-Regierung Huawei auf eine "schwarze Liste" setzte. Seither dürfen US-Unternehmen nur noch mit einer Sondererlaubnis Produkte an Huawei verkaufen oder von dem China-Konzern beziehen. Mittlerweile wurden die Regeln aber wieder gelockert, da sie auch für US-Unternehmen mit Verlusten verbunden waren. Beiden Seiten wurde vom US-Handelsministerium eine 90-tägige Übergangsfrist eingeräumt, die dazu genutzt werden kann, die Lagerbestände aufzufüllen.

Bei neuen Geräten sollen die Probleme mit der Verwendung eine neuen Materials behoben werden, wie das "Wall Street Journal" unter Berufung auf das Unternehmen berichtete.

Zusammen mit der Ausweitung des Tastatur-Austauschs startete Apple auch ein Reparatur-Programm für Displays einiger MacBook-Pro-Computer aus dem Jahr 2016 und stellte ein neues Top-Modell des MacBook Pro mit acht Prozessor-Kernen vor.

Wer nach einem Update für Windows 10 sein altes System wiederherstellen will, könnte auf eine Fehlermeldung stoßen. Microsoft hat auf seiner Seite eine Lösung für das Problem veröffentlicht.

Microsoft-Nutzer können nach einem Windows-Update derzeit auf einen sogenannten Stoppfehler stoßen. Das berichtet "Winfuture" mit Berufung auf "ghacks.net". Microsoft selbst hat auf seiner Website für den Fehler eine Support-Seite eingerichtet.

Der Fehler tritt laut Microsoft auf, wenn Nutzer Windows neu installieren, ein Update machen und danach das System mithilfe eines Wiederherstellungspunktes auf einen alten Zustand zurücksetzen möchten. Statt das System wiederherzustellen, zeigt der Rechner den Stopp-Fehler "0xc000021a". Zudem sollen Nutzer nach einem Neustart auch nicht auf den Windows-Desktop zurückkehren können.

Laut Microsoft werde der Fehler durch ein Problem mit Treiber verursacht. Nutzern, die auf den Stopp-Fehler 0xc000021a stoßen, nennt Microsoft auf seiner Seite einen Lösungsweg. So sollen Betroffene den Rechner neu starten und das Windows Recovery Environment aufrufen. Das Tool hilft, Windows bei Problemen zu reparieren. Es sollte nach zwei fehlerhaften Windows-Startversuchen nacheinander automatisch starten.

That means snappier performance and improved integrated graphics.

Do we wish the Surface Pro 7 had the slimmer chassis and smaller bezels of the new Surface Pro X? Of course. But the Surface Pro 7 is cheaper, faster, and more universal in terms of app support.

The Acer Aspire 5 is one of the few. There’s a wide-ranging option of configurations, ranging from $350 up to $850. The most balanced model is the $500 option, which includes an 8th-gen quad-core Intel processor and 8GB of RAM for great performance, a decent 1080p 15-inch screen, and even a 256GB solid state drive. It’s not fancy, but it has everything you’d need in a modern laptop.

From the exterior, you might not even know the Razer Blade is a gaming laptop. It’s as light and thin as a MacBook Pro, with thin bezels, a world-class keyboard, and touchpad, as well as a bright, vivid, 15-inch display. Even if it weren’t a gaming laptop, the Razer Blade would probably still be a contender for one of the best 15-inch laptops. The fact that it can play games at respectable framerates makes it a bit of a miracle.

Simply put, this is the most elegant, beautiful gaming laptop you’ve ever seen. The recent update to options for an OLED 4K panel or a 300Hz refresh rate sweetens the deal even more. Options like the Alienware Area-51m might perform better, but for our money, this is the gaming laptop we’d choose every time.

The best 15-inch laptop around is the Dell XPS 15 — and in 2020, Dell has relaunched the line with a whole new design. It’s gorgeous. It has even thinner bezels, now surrounding a 16:10 aspect ratio screen. The screen isn’t bigger, but it feels far more immersive thanks to the thin borders. There’s also some improved speakers, a larger touchpad, and a four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Dell even throws in the full-size SD card slot — a huge convenience for video editors.

This year’s XPS 13 also gets a larger keyboard and touchpad, making use of every possible surface of the device. Of course, it’s just as powerful and long-lasting as before, not sacrificing function over form. It’s no longer a cheap laptop, but as far as I’m concerned, the XPS has earned its spot as a premium brand. It all adds up to what is undoubtedly the best laptop you can buy.

The latest update to the MacBook Air isn’t a reinvention, but it does a number of things right. First off, it gets a price cut, now starting at just $999 (or $899 for students). That also includes a bump to the base storage, now at 256GB.

Die neue Windows-Version bringt eine Reihe an Neuheiten. Unter anderem wurde die Update-Mechanik unter Windows 10 komplett überarbeitet. Auch am Design hat Microsoft einige Änderungen vorgenommen. Der Nutzer hat nun noch mehr Möglichkeiten, den PC zu personalisieren. Die wichtigsten Neuheiten haben wir hier zusammengefasst.

In einem Blogpost beschreibt Microsoft-Manager John Cable, wie Nutzer ihren PC aktualisieren können. Demnach verfolgt Microsoft wie auch in den Jahren zuvor einen mehrstufigen Ansatz. So holen Sie sich das Update

Um die Installation manuell anzustoßen, gehen Sie in die Einstellungen und wählen Sie das Menü "Update & Sicherheit". Dort können Sie "Windows Update" auswählen und den PC nach Updates suchen lassen. Bevor Sie aber auf "Herunterladen und installieren" klicken, gehen Sie noch einmal unsere Checkliste durch, mit der Sie den PC auf das Update vorbereiten.

Das Update wird nur angezeigt, wenn man eine aktuelle Windows-10-Version nutzt (mit der Nummer 1803 oder 1809). Voraussetzung ist außerdem, dass man das Update vom 21. Mai 2019 eingespielt hat. Die Versionsnummer finden Sie in den System-Einstellungen unter "Info". Wie Sie den Update-Verlauf überprüfen, zeigt diese Fotoshow.

Hinweis: Es kann sein, dass das Update trotzdem erst in ein paar Tagen oder Wochen auf Ihrem PC angezeigt wird, da Microsoft es schrittweise verfügbar macht (siehe oben). Schneller geht es, wenn man dem Windows-Insider-Programm beitritt. Wie das geht, zeigt diese Fotoshow.

Die Datei wird zunächst nur heruntergeladen. Anschließend kann der Nutzer den Zeitpunkt festlegen, zu dem das Update installiert und der Computer neu gestartet werden soll. Dies ist Teil der neuen Update-Routine, die verhindern soll, dass der Nutzer im falschen Moment überrascht wird.

Windows will Update-Probleme transparent machen

Sollte es bei der Installation des Frühjahrs-Updates zu Problemen kommen, will Microsoft diese auf einer eigens dafür eingerichteten Website öffentlich machen. Der Konzern nennt dies das "Health Dashboard". Hier können sich Nutzer über bekannte Probleme informieren und Lösungswege finden. Auch zu den monatlich ausgelieferten Sicherheits-Patches wird man alle Bekanntmachungen hier finden.

Windows-10-Nutzer hatten in den vergangenen Monaten immer wieder mit Update-Problemen zu kämpfen. Das vergangene Herbst-Update musste sogar zurückgezogen werden. Dieses Mal will Microsoft wohl alles richtig machen und hat sich für die Fertigstellung der neuen Funktionen mehr Zeit gelassen. Ursprünglich sollte das Update im April erscheinen. Der Veröffentlichungstermin wurde jedoch auf Mai verschoben.

Apple hat weiter Ärger mit den Tastaturen seiner MacBook-Laptops. Nach fortlaufenden Nutzer-Beschwerden weitete der Konzern das Austausch-Programm am Dienstag auch auf Notebook-Modelle aus dem vergangenen und diesen Jahr aus.

Apple hatte im Jahr 2015 einen neuen, besonders flachen Tastatur-Mechanismus eingeführt. Das erlaubte es dem Konzern, dünnere Geräte zu bauen. Zugleich beklagten sich viele Nutzer über Tasten, die klemmen oder nicht mehr funktionieren – zum Beispiel wenn Krümel oder auch nur Staubkörner in den Mechanismus rutschten.

Apple glaubte, das Problem mit der dritten Generation der sogenannten "Butterfly"-Tastaturen gelöst zu haben, bei denen der Mechanismus durch eine zusätzlichen Schutz durch eine dünne Abdeckung unter den Tasten bekam. Doch die Nutzer-Beschwerden setzten sich fort.

Mit der Tastenkombination "Windows-Taste" + "Shift" + "S" können Nutzer einen Screenshot von einem ausgewählten Ausschnitt des Bildschirms machen. In den Tastatureinstellungen lässt sich diese Funktion nun auch mit der "Drucken"-Taste nutzen. Aktivieren Sie dafür die Option "Bildschirmverknüpfung drucken".

Microsoft hat seinem Browser Edge einige neue Tools verpasst. Beispielsweise lassen sich mit den "Grammatiktools" Wörter in Silben aufteilen oder bestimmte Wörter farblich hervorheben – wie Nomen oder Verben. Im Lesemodus gibt es die Option "Zeilenfokussierung". Hier können Nutzer einstellen, ob auf der Seite drei oder fünf Zeilen angezeigt werden sollen. Der Rest des Textes wird schwarz ausgeblendet. Diese Funktionen finden sich in der "Leseansicht" – diese rufen Sie mit einem Klick auf das Buchsymbol in der Adressleiste auf.

Die Kalender-App bietet nun eine verbesserte Suchfunktion. So können Nutzer jetzt auch nach Ereignissen mithilfe von Orten, Teilnehmern oder Stichworten in der Ereignisbeschreibung suchen. Im Startmenü lassen sich Kacheln übereinander ziehen und dadurch ein "Tile Folder" erstellen. Auch erhält Windows neue Emojis. Der Game Mode hat einige Zusatzfunktionen bekommen und startet jetzt automatisch bei Spielen. Das soll garantieren, dass Hintergrundprogramme während des Zockens nicht stören.

Microsoft hat verschiedene neue Surface-Geräte vorgestellt, welche die Vorgänger Modelle übertrumpfen sollen. Außerdem präsentiert der Konzern zum ersten Mal Surface-Kopfhörer.Microsoft hat neue Geräte seiner Surface-Produktreihe vorgestellt. Dem Tablet Surface Pro 6 und dem Notebook Laptop 2 verpasst Microsoft vor allem mehr Leistung durch neue Intel-Chips. Die Geräte, die der Software-Konzern als Referenz-Modelle auch für seine Hardware-Partner versteht, sollen ab dem 16. Oktober auch in Deutschland in den Handel kommen.

1. Dunkler Modus

Den dunklen Modus gibt es nun auch für den Explorer. Er verpasst dem Fenster einen schwarzen Hintergrund. Das soll unter anderem die Augen schonen, wenn Nutzer den Rechner im Dunkeln verwenden. Um den dunklen Modus zu aktivieren, gehen Sie wie folgt vor: Drücken Sie auf "Start" dann "Einstellungen" und wählen Sie "Personalisierung" und dann "Farben". Im Standard-App-Modus lässt sich nun der dunkle Modus einschalten.

2. Mehr Synchronisation mit dem Smartphone

Die Windows-Timeline ist jetzt auch auf dem Smartphone der Nutzer verfügbar. Auch lassen sich vom PC aus auf Textnachrichten oder Fotos auf Android-Smartphones zugreifen. Microsoft bietet für solche Funktionen die "Your Phone App", mit der Nutzer ihr Smartphone mit dem Windows-10-Rechner verknüpfen können. Haben Sie in den Einstellungen "Zwischenablageverlauf" eingeschaltet, werden auch Bilder oder Texte abgespeichert und über mehrere Geräte synchronisiert.

3. Neues Tool für Screenshots

Das Tool "Ausschneiden und Skizzieren" (Snip & Sketch) ist jetzt als App über den Windows Store verfügbar. Mit dem Programm lassen sich Screenshots machen und bearbeiten. Es soll das Werkzeug "Snipping Tool" ersetzen. Wer in der neuen Windows-Version Snipping Tool aufruft, erhält eine entsprechende Meldung.

Neben einer verbesserten Version des High-End-Desktop-PCs Studio 2 kündigte Microsoft auch einen Kopfhörer aus eigener Entwicklung an, in dem etwa die digitale Sprachassistentin Cortana integriert ist und E-Mails vorlesen oder Konferenzschaltungen starten kann.Laut Microsoft hat das neue Surface Pro 6 einen Achtkernprozessor von Intel der achten Generation und bis zu 13,5 Stunden Akkulaufzeit. Der Touch-Bildschirm ist 12,3 Zoll groß. Zudem hat das Gerät eine Acht-Megapixel-Kamera. Das Gerät soll mindestens 899 Euro kosten.

Der Surface Laptop 2 hat ebenfalls einen Achtkernprozessor und bis zu 14,5 Stunden Akkulaufzeit. Das Touch-Display ist 13,5 Zoll groß. Preis: Ab .1449 Euro. Die Surface-Kopfhörer besitzen Geräuschunterdrückung und acht Mikrofone, mit je zwei Mikrofonen pro Ohrmuschel.Microsoft hat die neue Version von Windows 10 für alle Nutzer veröffentlicht.
