Asus regained its throne atop our Best Chromebook rankings with the new Chromebook Flip C434. New to this year's model is a larger 14-inch display, slimmer display bezels and improved performance thanks to a Core m3-8100Y CPU. This convertible doesn't just impress on paper, either. Sure, the $569 Flip C434 is a bit pricey for a Chromebook, but there is currently no better option on the market.

The Surface Pro 7 takes an excellent laptop in last year's Surface Pro 6 and gives it a power boost. While battery life takes a hit, the new 10th Gen CPUs provide outstanding performance. The design hasn't changed at all, but the Surface Pro 7 now has a USB-C port for charging and connecting peripherals. Microsoft still sells the comfortable Alcantara-clad Type Cover and the super-responsive Surface Pen, which makes it easy to draw or take notes on this tablet's vivid and bright 12.3-inch display.

You can find good cheap Windows laptops and high-quality Chromebooks for under $500. However, better mainstream laptops usually cost more than $700 and premium Ultrabooks can run over $1,000. The best gaming laptops can cost $2.000 and up, but you can play the latest titles at decent frame rates on gaming laptops under $1,000.

Knowing a laptop's screen size tells you a lot about its portability overall. If you want to use your computer on your lap or carry it around a lot, go for one with a 12, 13 or 14-inch display. If you want to use the computer on tables and desks and won't carry it around much, a 15-inch model may give you more value. Some gaming rigs, media machines and workstations even have 17 or 18-inch screens, but those are hardest to carry.

More and more of today's laptops are 2-in-1s with screens that either bend back 360 degrees or detach so you can use them as tablets. CPU: An Intel Core i5 provides good mainstream performance. Some budget systems will come with Core i3, Celeron or Pentium CPUs which are good enough for basic tasks, but not heavy mutltiasking. Get a Core i7 or a quad core processor (serial number ends in HQ or HK) for gaming or high-end productivity tasks such as video editing and 3D modeling.

RAM: 8GB is ideal for most users. 4GB is acceptable for budget systems. Secondary laptops and Chromebooks may have less.

Storage: Unless you're a gamer or a power user, 256GB of internal storage is probably enough. If at all possible, get an SSD (Solid State Drive) rather than a hard drive, because it's going to make your entire computer a lot faster.

Graphics Chip: Gamers and creative professionals need to do some research and figure out which discrete GPU is good enough to run their favorite software. Everyone else will be happy with the built-in Intel HD Graphics that come on the CPU.

Was kostet eine Windows-10-Lizenz und muss es unbedingt die Pro-Version sein?

Die für Heimanwender ausreichende Home-Version gibt es ab circa 100 Euro als DVD mit Lizenzschlüssel. Von 25-Euro-Angeboten, die nur einen Lizenz-Key beinhalten, sollte man Abstand nehmen – sie funktionieren zwar oft, aber rechtlich bewegt man sich zumindest im Graubereich. Die Pro-Version ab 200 Euro bietet Vorteile etwa für Geschäftsleute, die auf Ihrem Notebook wichtige Dateien gespeichert haben – diese können mittels der Bitlocker-Funktion ihre Festplatte verschlüsseln. Eine andere Pro-Funktion namens Hyper V ermöglicht es, virtualisierte Betriebssysteme auf dem Rechner zu nutzen.

Ist das eine gute Gelegenheit, sich einfach einen neuen Rechner zu kaufen, auf dem Windows 10 schon installiert ist?

Das ist der teuerste, aber einfachste Weg. Allerdings mit einem winzigen Haken: Bei neuen Rechnern mit vorinstalliertem Windows 10 ist der Lizenzkey hardwaregebunden und nur in der Firmware des Rechners gespeichert. Es ist kein offizieller Weg vorgesehen, an ihn heranzukommen. Wenn der Rechner einmal endgültig kaputt geht, verfällt damit auch die Windows-Lizenz – mit dem nächsten Rechner kauft man dann eben eine neue. Wenn man dagegen einen Windows-7-Rechner auf Windows 10 updatet, hat man einen Key, mit dem man diese Windows-Version nach einem Rechnerwechsel auf dem neuen aktivieren kann.

Müssen Nutzer, die ihren Rechner behalten, Hardware aufrüsten?

Prinzipiell läuft Windows 10 auf jedem Rechner, auf dem auch Windows 7 läuft. Die Systemanforderungen sind ungefähr dieselben. Dabei läuft die neue Version eher schneller. Es kann aber sein, dass es für bestimmte Systemkomponenten keine Windows-10-Treiber mehr gibt – das kann bei Desktop-PCs zum Beispiel die Grafikkarte beziehungsweise die Onboard-Grafik sein, sodass man nur eine minimale Bildschirmauflösung sieht. Mit einer neuen, günstigen Grafikkarte lässt sich das beheben. Andere alte Hardware wie Scanner oder Drucker ohne Windows-10-Treiber muss man dann meist komplett ersetzen.

Muss es überhaupt Windows sein oder gibt es Nutzer, die vielleicht mit Linux glücklich werden?

Wer nicht auf Microsoft Office oder Adobe Creative Suite angewiesen ist, und wer nicht die modernsten PC-Spiele zocken will, kommt in der Regel auch mit einem Linux-System zurecht – für manche ist die Umgewöhnung eventuell leichter als die von Windows 7 zu 10. Was gilt es vor der Installation von Windows 10 zu bedenken?

Anfangs war Windows 10 für sein rücksichtsloses Vorgehen bei Updates berüchtigt, wobei es auch schon vorkam, dass alle privaten Dateien gelöscht wurden. Diese Mängel kommen nun nicht mehr vor, dennoch sollte man vor dem Upgrade ein aktuelles Backup aller eigenen Dateien anlegen. Das sollte man ohnehin regelmäßig tun. Und da es während und nach dem Upgrade vorkommen kann, dass man mit dem Rechner nicht ins Internet kommt, weil eventuell Netzwerktreiber fehlen, sollte man einen zweiten, funktionierenden Rechner greifbar haben, um Infos nachschlagen und Treiber herunterladen zu können.

Haben Sie die Schwachstellen Ihres Systems beseitigt, können Sie in die Tiefenanalyse Ihrer Startprobleme gehen. Dafür können Sie zunächst einmal die Startzeit Ihres PCs messen. Dafür gehen Sie in den Task-Manager, indem Sie die Tasten Strg + Alt + Entf gleichzeitig drücken. Anschließend gehen Sie auf die Registerkarte "Autostart". Dort können Sie einsehen, welche Programme beim Start besonders viele Ressourcen verbrauchen, und sie gegebenenfalls beenden. Eine Anleitung dazu finden Sie hier. Rechts oben können Sie unter "Letzte BIOS-Zeit" die Zeit einsehen, die Ihre Hardware beim Start benötigt, bevor Windows startet. In unserem Test waren das 5,4 Sekunden.

Um die Startzeit Ihrer Hardware zu verbessern, können Sie versuchen, im BIOS beziehungsweise UEFI die Boot-Reihenfolge zu ändern. Von Vorteil für die Startgeschwindigkeit ist es, die Festplatte auf der Windows installiert ist, nach oben zu verschieben.

Zudem sollte die Aktualisierung ein Speicherproblem mit Office lösen und Geräte sollten Microsoft-Accounts in Zukunft erkennen, ohne dass Nutzer sich ein- und wieder ausloggen müssen. Auch bleiben App-Berechtigungen erhalten, wenn Nutzer ihr System zurücksetzen. Eine vollständige Auflistung aller gelösten Fehler finden Sie auf der Website von Microsoft (englisch).

Wenn automatische Update aktiviert sind, sollte Ihr System ohne Ihr Zutun die Aktualisierung laden und installieren. Der Vorgang lässt sich auch manuell starten. Wie das geht, zeigen wir in dieser Fotoshow.Ansonsten gehen Sie wie folgt vor: Drücken Sie die Windows-Taste auf der Tastatur und tippen Sie "Update" ein. Wählen Sie jetzt "Nach Updates Suchen" und klicken Sie dann auf die Schaltfläche "Nach Updates Suchen".

Dass etwas sich ändern wird, dürften die meisten Windows 7-Nutzer bereits im Frühjahr mitbekommen haben. Seitdem blendet Microsoft ein Pop-up-Fenster ein, dass das Support-Ende von Windows 7 verkündet und ein Upgrade auf Windows 10 nahelegt.

Was das bedeutet, wie ernst Verbraucher das nehmen müssen und welche Optionen sie haben, erklärt Christoph Schmidt vom Computer-Fachmagazin "Chip".Das Betriebssystem und alle installierten Programme werden ganz normal weiter funktionieren. Nach dem 14. Januar 2020 wird es aber keine Sicherheits- und Softwareupdates mehr für das System geben, und Microsoft beantwortet keine Supportanfragen mehr. Das gilt für Privatanwender – Firmen und Behörden mit gesonderten Verträgen erhalten gegen Bezahlung weiterhin Updates und Support.

Viele Nutzer scheinen ja nach wie vor zufrieden mit Windows 7 zu sein. Warum sollten sie sich davon verabschieden?

Bei allen Betriebssystemen werden laufend neue Sicherheitslücken entdeckt, durch die Schadsoftware eindringen und die Kontrolle über das System übernehmen kann. Danach führt sie weiteren schädlichen Code aus, stiehlt Dateien oder verschlüsselt diese in erpresserischer Absicht.

Nach Bekanntwerden der Lücken entwickeln und verteilen die Betriebssystemanbieter Updates, die diese Einfallstore schließen – bevor sich tatsächlich Schadsoftware verbreitet, die diese ausnutzen. Diesen enorm wichtigen Sicherheitsmechanismus gibt es ab dem 14. Januar 2020 für Windows 7 nicht mehr.

Wie groß ist das Risiko, wenn man mit dem Rechner einfach weiterarbeitet?

Wegen der fehlenden Updates wird Windows 7 dann von Monat zu Monat unsicherer. Man läuft Gefahr, dass der Rechner schon beim Surfen im Netz, durch heruntergeladene Software oder durch E-Mail-Anhänge oder Dateien von fremden USB-Sticks von Malware befallen wird – mit allen schädlichen Folgen. Antivirensoftware kann übrigens auch nicht effektiv arbeiten, wenn das zugrundeliegende Betriebssystem korrumpiert ist.

Man konnte eine Zeit lang gratis auf Windows 10 upgraden – ist das vorbei?

Obwohl Microsoft das nicht offiziell so kommuniziert, lassen sich derzeit Windows-7-Rechner noch mittels des Media Creation Tool direkt von der Microsoft-Website auf Windows 10 upgraden. Das Tool kann auch einen USB-Stick erstellen, um Windows 10 auf beliebigen Rechnern neu zu installieren. Wie das geht, lesen Sie hier (untere Hälfte des Artikels) oder in dieser Fotoshow.

Bei der Installation akzeptiert Windows 10 auch weiterhin Windows-7-Lizenzschlüssel, die auf der ursprünglichen Verpackung des Betriebssystems oder auf einem Microsoft-Aufkleber auf dem Rechner aufgedruckt sind. Auch mit Windows-8.1-Schlüsseln funktioniert das Upgrade noch.

Dafür gehen Sie zunächst einmal ins BIOS. Dafür müssen Sie den Rechner neu starten. Direkt nach dem Neustart drücken Sie entweder F2, F8, F10, Entf oder Esc. Die richtige Taste variiert je nach Hersteller. Probieren Sie also entweder alle Tasten durch oder suchen Sie im Internet nach der BIOS-Taste Ihres PC-Herstellers. Im Boot-Bereich gehen Sie auf "Boot" und danach auf "Boot Device Priority". Auf Deutsch könnte das so etwas wie "Boot-Reihenfolge anpassen" heißen. Dort sehen Sie die Hardware, die zuerst gebootet wird, an erster Stelle. Verschieben Sie in diesem Fall mit den Pfeiltasten Ihre Windows-Festplatte nach oben. Anschließend verlassen Sie das BIOS und speichern dabei Ihre Änderungen.

Windows-Start analysieren

Sie können sich über die Windows-Ereignisanzeige in den Startvorgang Einblicke geben lassen. Geben Sie dafür in der Suchmaske im Startbereich "Ereignisanzeige" ein. Dort klicken Sie sich über die Ordner "Anwendungs- und Dienstprotokolle", "Microsoft" und "Windows" zur "Diagnostics-Performance" durch, wo Sie anschließend "öffnen" anklicken. Dort suchen Sie die Ereignis-ID 100. Scrollen Sie zu "Startdauer" herunter, Sie bekommen üblicherweise in Millisekunden die Länge des Startvorgangs angezeigt.

Apps deinstallieren

Ein vollgemüllter PC ist eine typische Ursache für Startschwierigkeiten. Programme, die man nicht mehr braucht, zu entfernen, hilft daher immer. Suchen Sie in Ihrer Suchmaske nach "Apps & Features", dann finden Sie eine Liste all Ihrer installierten Programme. Klicken Sie eine App an und gehen Sie auf "deinstallieren", um sie zu entfernen. Das funktioniert allerdings nur mit Programmen, die nicht von Windows vorinstalliert sind.

Auf jeden Fall sollten Sie auf Ihrem PC den Schnellstart aktivieren, wenn dieser noch nicht aktiviert ist. Dafür gehen Sie in Ihre Systemsteuerung. Dort gehen Sie auf "Hardware und Sound" und anschließend auf "Energieoptionen". Dort finden Sie den Unterpunkt "Netzschalterverhalten ändern". Im anschließenden Fenster prüfen Sie, ob "Schnellstart aktiviert" markiert ist.

During CES 2020, Lenovo announced the newest addition to the company’s popular 2-in-1 lineup, the Lenovo Yoga 5G. Formerly known as Project Limitless, the laptop will be one of the first from Lenovo to feature 5G capability. Starting at $1,499, the convertible laptop will be available starting in spring 2020.

This Yoga isn’t going to win any design awards. It’s not that the Yoga 5G is ugly. Quite the contrary, it’s actually quite handsome with its slate gray aluminum body. It’s just that the Yoga design could use an update or at least a new color palette. As the name suggests, the laptop has 360-degree hinges that allow the laptop to switch from traditional clamshell mode to a tablet effortlessly.

Taking a peek at the laptop’s interior and you’ll see more of that stately aluminum gracing the keyboard deck, a full-size keyboard and a decently sized touchpad. Weighing 3 pounds and measuring 12.7 x 8.5 x 0.6 inches, the Yoga 5G is slightly lighter than the Asus ZenBook Flip 14 (3.3 pounds, 12.9 x 8.9 x 0.5 inches). However, it’s heavier than laptops like the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (2.9 pounds, 11.7 x 8.2 x 0.5 inches) and HP Elite Dragonfly (2.7 pounds, 12 x 7.8 x 0.6 inches).

The Yoga 5G’s 14-inch, 1920 x 1080 touchscreen, looked pretty bright and vivid during my brief demo. However, the room was a tad dim, so I definitely want to see how the panel shakes out with our colorimeter and screen brightness meter. Lenovo claims the screen will reach a maximum 400 nits which would top the Dragonfly (373 nits), but not the XPS 13 (516 nits).

It’s not a ThinkPad keyboard, but I’ll take it. Lenovo has some of the best keyboards on the market and the Yoga 5G is a great example. The keys are nice and bouncy and I never felt like I was bottoming out.
Aside from 5G connectivity, Qualcomm's claim to fame with its chipset is a claim of 24-hour battery life. The company's making this bet due to the lower power consumption of its chips. During my long tech journalism career, I've yet to see a laptop last beyond 13 hours, but there's always a chance, slim as it may be.

So what's so great about a 5G capable laptop anyways? Well, for starters, you'll get speeds 10 times faster than 4G LTE. That means whether you're downloading or uploading important documents or video or just want to download a movie before a flight, you'll get the task done in a much quicker fashion.

If you're not ready to make the leap to 5G and are looking to save a few dollars, Lenovo also announced a new pair of Yogas, the 14 and 15-inch Slim 7. Available sometime in April, both systems will start at $1,209. There’s also a 14-inch AMD version that starts at $849. Clad in sleek aluminum, the laptops are available in two shades: Slate Grey and the eye-catching Orchid.

Some of the laptops’ key features are AI focused, including Lenovo’s Q-Control Intelligent Cooling feature, which relies on AI to optimize battery consumption with claims of 20% longer battery life. While working on the system, I had a fire extinguisher and metal bucket filled with sand next to me, just in case the battery decided to go rogue. Flip the system over and insert the spudger tool just to the right of the Backspace key. Loosening the keyboard takes a little patience, but you'll need to wiggle it up and down as well as right to left to loosen the keyboard lid. Work the spudger around the lid's edge, prying it free. If any place holds, go back and forth under the lid at that spot until the lid snaps open.

Gently pull the lid off from the base. Be careful because there are two ribbon cables that attach the keyboard and touchpad to the system's electronics. Disconnect them if they haven't worked free on their own.Unplug the battery pack and unscrew the battery bolts. The battery I'm taking out is puffy, swollen and roughly double its original thickness, so it goes right into the sand bucket, just to be on the safe side.

Plug in the replacement battery and place it with the label facing down into the battery bracket. Make sure it fits correctly and seats properly; then, screw the battery bolts back in.After feeding the keyboard and touchpad ribbon cables through the rectangular hole in the main board, plug them in. The magnifying glass and tweezers can help you align these cables prior to locking their brackets.

With everything plugged in, put the keyboard lid back in place and press it around its perimeter until it snaps into place. Make sure it sits flat and is locked in. Next, screw the back panel on. Finish up by replacing the screws that go into the lower part of the system's case.

After a few seconds, the C213SA started up fine. It looks and works exactly as the Chromebook did before the battery swap. Itn fact, it is the same system, only with a different battery. The system now runs for over 12 hours of video playback, about what the machine was capable of before the battery started going bad.

The final thing to do is to safely dispose of the old battery. While a damaged lithium battery isn't considered hazardous waste, it is a fire danger, so it should never end up in the trash. I took the Flip's original battery to my county's collection site for hazardous waste disposal. If there's nothing like this facility where you live, check your local electronics stores; many, such as Best Buy and Staples, take old batteries for safe disposal and recycling. Finally, the websites for Call2Recycle and Earth911 offer databases that contain a good list of recycling locations. You're sure to find one that's close to you.

Anschließend verlassen Sie das BIOS und speichern dabei Ihre Änderungen.

Windows-Start analysieren

Sie können sich über die Windows-Ereignisanzeige in den Startvorgang Einblicke geben lassen. Geben Sie dafür in der Suchmaske im Startbereich "Ereignisanzeige" ein. Dort klicken Sie sich über die Ordner "Anwendungs- und Dienstprotokolle", "Microsoft" und "Windows" zur "Diagnostics-Performance" durch, wo Sie anschließend "öffnen" anklicken. Dort suchen Sie die Ereignis-ID 100. Scrollen Sie zu "Startdauer" herunter, Sie bekommen üblicherweise in Millisekunden die Länge des Startvorgangs angezeigt.

Apps deinstallieren

Ein vollgemüllter PC ist eine typische Ursache für Startschwierigkeiten. Programme, die man nicht mehr braucht, zu entfernen, hilft daher immer. Suchen Sie in Ihrer Suchmaske nach "Apps & Features", dann finden Sie eine Liste all Ihrer installierten Programme. Klicken Sie eine App an und gehen Sie auf "deinstallieren", um sie zu entfernen. Das funktioniert allerdings nur mit Programmen, die nicht von Windows vorinstalliert sind.

Auf jeden Fall sollten Sie auf Ihrem PC den Schnellstart aktivieren, wenn dieser noch nicht aktiviert ist. Dafür gehen Sie in Ihre Systemsteuerung. Dort gehen Sie auf "Hardware und Sound" und anschließend auf "Energieoptionen". Dort finden Sie den Unterpunkt "Netzschalterverhalten ändern". Im anschließenden Fenster prüfen Sie, ob "Schnellstart aktiviert" markiert ist.

Wenn der Rechner plötzlich lahm wird oder streikt, kann ein Neustart helfen. Allerdings darf man den Neustart nicht mit dem Ruhemodus verwechseln, sagen Experten. Denn die beiden Optionen aus dem Startmenü bewirken nicht das Gleiche. Wir erklären den Unterschied.

Ein weiterer einfacher Ansatz, um Windows wieder flott zu bekommen, ist es, alle nicht mehr benötigten Programme zu deinstallieren. Mit etwas Glück ist vielleicht die Software dabei, die den Rechner ausbremst. Verantwortlich für schleppendes Tempo ist laut den Experten oft der Virenscanner. Testweise sollte man diesen deaktivieren. Läuft dann alles schneller, kann man ihn getrost deinstallieren.

Denn Windows installiert dann automatisch das betriebssystemeigene Antiviren-Programm Defender. Das könne inzwischen mit der Konkurrenz nicht nur bei der Schutzwirkung mithalten, sondern arbeite auch deutlich störungsärmer. Mit dem Windows Defender vertreibt Microsoft einen kostenlosen Virenschutz für Windows-Systeme. Ein aktueller Test zeigt: Die kostenlose Software ist mindestens so gut wie bekannte Programme.Wer Windows 10 nutzt, erhält mit dem Windows Defender einen kostenlosen Virenschutz. Die Tester stuften den Windows Defender darum als "Top Product" ein.
Getestet wurde dabei die Windows-Defender-Version 4.18. Insgesamt testete "AV-Test" 20 Antivirenprogramme. Ebenfalls volle Punktzahl erhielten die kostenpflichtigen Produkte von Norton, Kaspersky und F-Secure. Wir zeigen Ihnen, wie Sie das Hochfahren beschleunigen können.Wenn der Start des Rechners sich über mehrere Minuten hinzieht, kann das verschiedene Gründe haben. Wir zeigen Ihnen, wie Sie allein mit in Windows 10 integrierten Funktionen das Startverhalten Ihres Rechners analysieren und verbessern können.

Windows-Schnell-Check

Zuerst sollten Sie per Schnell-Check prüfen, ob Ihr System größere Probleme mit sich herumträgt. Das können Treiberprobleme, Programme, die viele Ressourcen an sich reißen, oder Ähnliches sein.Dafür gehen Sie zunächst in die Eingabeaufforderung. Diese erreichen Sie mit dem Kürzel "Windows-Taste" + "R" oder, indem Sie in der Sucheingabe nach der App "Ausführen" suchen. Hat sie sich geöffnet, geben Sie den Befehl "perfmon /report" ein.

So kommen Sie in die Ressourcen- und Leistungsüberwachung, wo Sie circa eine Minute lang auf die Systemdiagnose warten müssen. Ist diese da, sollten Sie unter den zahlreichen Auswertungen vor allem die mit einem Kreuz markierten "Fehler" ins Auge fassen, aber auch die "Informationen" enthalten interessante Tipps, wie Sie Ihr System stabiler machen können.

Hinweis: Sie müssen mindestens Administratorenrechte haben, um den Schnell-Check zu öffnen. Sollte er sich also aufhängen, hilft es, eine Eingabeaufforderung mit Administratorrechten zu starten. Dies geschieht erneut über das Kürzel "Windows-Taste" + "R" und dann mit dem Befehl "net user administrator /active:yes".

Startzeit messen und Autostart-Programme beenden

Haben Sie die Schwachstellen Ihres Systems beseitigt, können Sie in die Tiefenanalyse Ihrer Startprobleme gehen. Dafür können Sie zunächst einmal die Startzeit Ihres PCs messen. Dafür gehen Sie in den Task-Manager, indem Sie die Tasten Strg + Alt + Entf gleichzeitig drücken. Anschließend gehen Sie auf die Registerkarte "Autostart". Dort können Sie einsehen, welche Programme beim Start besonders viele Ressourcen verbrauchen, und sie gegebenenfalls beenden. Eine Anleitung dazu finden Sie hier. Rechts oben können Sie unter "Letzte BIOS-Zeit" die Zeit einsehen, die Ihre Hardware beim Start benötigt, bevor Windows startet. In unserem Test waren das 5,4 Sekunden.

Um die Startzeit Ihrer Hardware zu verbessern, können Sie versuchen, im BIOS beziehungsweise UEFI die Boot-Reihenfolge zu ändern. Von Vorteil für die Startgeschwindigkeit ist es, die Festplatte auf der Windows installiert ist, nach oben zu verschieben.

Viele BIOS/UEFI sind meist auf Englisch gehalten und nicht oder unzureichend ins Deutsche übersetzt. Sie sollten also grundlegende Englisch-Kenntnisse besitzen, wenn Sie Änderungen im BIOS/UEFI vornehmen wollen.

Obwohl Microsoft das nicht offiziell so kommuniziert, lassen sich derzeit Windows-7-Rechner noch mittels des Media Creation Tool direkt von der Microsoft-Website auf Windows 10 upgraden. Das Tool kann auch einen USB-Stick erstellen, um Windows 10 auf beliebigen Rechnern neu zu installieren. Wie das geht, lesen Sie hier (untere Hälfte des Artikels) oder in dieser Fotoshow.

Bei der Installation akzeptiert Windows 10 auch weiterhin Windows-7-Lizenzschlüssel, die auf der ursprünglichen Verpackung des Betriebssystems oder auf einem Microsoft-Aufkleber auf dem Rechner aufgedruckt sind. Auch mit Windows-8.1-Schlüsseln funktioniert das Upgrade noch.

Falls Sie den Key nicht finden, können Sie ihn aus Ihrer aktuellen Windows-Version auslesen. Am einfachsten geht das mithilfe einer Gratis-Software, wie beispielsweise "ShowKeyPlus". Einen Download finden Sie hier.

Über den Akku-Verschleiß geben einige Zeilen ganz am Ende des Dokuments Auskunft. Suchen Sie nach den Stichworten "Vorgesehene Akkukapazität" und "Letzte vollständige Aufladung". Die beiden hier aufgeführten Werte verraten den Zustand der Batterie.

Microsoft Support admitted that the company is currently investigating the problem. Until a solution is found, Surface owners are encouraged to look out for new Windows 10 updates and Surface firmware patches. Microsoft will want to solve this problem soon or risk hurting the image of the upcoming products it's set to launch at the Surface Event on Oct 2.

The good news is that if the battery problems stem from a software bug they should be fixable through another update — barring that it doesn't cause even more problems. No, we're not making this up. A patent filed by Microsoft in 2018 (via Windows Latest) describes how solar panels could be mounted to the Surface Pro's kickstand to extend battery life.

The patent references carrying cases that charge devices with solar energy but notes there is no such solution for when a laptop or tablet is in use. In the patent, Microsoft theorizes the use of solar panels on a Surface Pro, and maps out different ways it could be implemented.One photo shows a Surface Pro with an attached keyboard that is being charged by four solar panels mounted to the back of its kickstand. Another method described in the patent would charge the Surface device directly.

You wouldn't even need direct sunlight, as the solar panels appear to work with artificial lights. Better yet, the kickstand can be rotated so the panels aim directly at the source of light. Microsoft wouldn't be the first to use solar energy to charge a keyboard. Logitech's long-running K750 is a wireless solar keyboard that charges itself when there is light and stays powered for three months in total darkness.

Still, you shouldn't get too excited about the idea of never having to charge your Surface Pro. We see all sorts of strange patents filed by big tech companies and few of them see the light of day. Putting solar panels on a mass-production device is among the more audacious ideas we've heard of, so we wouldn't bet on a solar-powered Surface arriving anytime soon.

Microsoft would need to invest a lot of R&D to make solar a viable solution for increasing the battery life of a tablet or laptop. Along with added cost, solar panels could compromise the device's weight and appearance. We're hoping for some major changes to the next Surface device after the Surface Pro 7 failed to break new ground. We won't be saying the same thing later this year if Microsoft can somehow find a way to add solar tech to the Surface Pro 8.

When I hit the road, I like to travel light. And for the past five years, that has often meant taking my Asus Flip Chromebook. It's not only small and light, but also packed with more than enough processing power, a responsive touch screen and good Wi-Fi. So, it was with dread and dismay that prior to going to Detroit for an esports tournament, I noticed that my Chromebook's touchpad was bulging from a swollen battery.

The system's lid no longer closed properly, and its thickness at the top of the touchpad had grown from 0.4 inches to 0.8 inches. It ran fine, but something was clearly amiss, because the Flip's battery life had declined from more than 12 hours to less than 6.

More to the point, with the potential for lithium-ion batteries to explode or catch fire, continuing to use my Flip seemed dangerous. The bulging battery indicated that the power-generating chemical reaction wasn't running to completion which meant that there might be breaks in the membrane separating the positively charged side of the cell from the negatively portion, resulting in the buildup of gases inside the battery.

At this point, I had two choices: get a new Chromebook or replace the battery. A word of warning: Due to the danger of a bulging lithium battery, safety is paramount if you choose the latter option. In most cases, this type of battery isn't particularly dangerous, but when damaged and swollen, a lithium battery can start an intense fire. In other words, a bulging and damaged battery is not to be taken lightly.

Along with improvements to battery life, the firmware updates fix a ‘Surface Hot Plug – System devices’ issue and a ‘Surface Hid Mini Driver’ problem in the Surface Laptop 3 and improves the Realtek High Definition Audio drivers for better Cortana speech recognition in the Surface Pro 7.

It's not uncommon for a product to receive a day-1 update, in the same sort of way that video games get launch-day patches. Unfortunately, in this case, Microsoft is improving its products after many reviewers already tested them. The Surface Pro 7 firmware update was pushed out yesterday while the Surface Laptop 3's update will arrive today. Once they're available on our review units, we'll download them and rerun our battery test to see if there is any marked improvement. If so, we'll update our reviews accordingly.

If you purchased a Surface Pro 7 or Surface Laptop 3, the firmware update should push through onto your device automatically. To check, open "Settings" by typing it into the Windows 10 search bar. From there, select the Update & Security icon. On the left pane, make sure "Windows Update" is pressed then click "Check for Update."

Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro 4 owners have taken to social media to complain about rapidly draining batteries. In once instance, a user said their Surface Laptop 2's battery fell 20% after just 19 minutes. In another, a Microsoft Answer forum user claimed their six-month-old Surface Laptop 2 loses 25% of its charge overnight when it's turned off.

Surface Pro 4 owners are also having serious problems. One person tweeted that their Surface Pro 4 powers down in less than three hours when surfing the web or watching YouTube. The Surface Pro 4 is now a few years old, so poor runtimes could easily be blamed on the natural degradation of lithium-ion batteries. Then again, batteries shouldn't drain as fast as some users are reporting and Microsoft won't want customers to think that their Surface laptop will be a paperweight within a few years.

Microsoft hasn't released an official statement on the matter but their Twitter support team has been asking users whether the battery drain occurred after an update was installed. This suggests that the battery problems could be software related, and not anything to do with the Surface's components.

The quality and safety of all HP products is our top priority. We recently learned that batteries provided by one of our suppliers for certain notebook computers and mobile workstations present a potential safety concern. We are taking immediate action to address this issue including a voluntary recall and replacement of the batteries. This action pertains to 0.1 percent of the HP systems sold globally over the past two years.

Customers can visit HP’s site to learn if their battery should be replaced. Impacted customers will have their batteries replaced free of charge and may continue safely using their device by placing the battery in Safety Mode and connecting to an external power source.

When we think about the components that influence laptop battery life, the CPU and display panel get top billing. However, the storage drive also uses a lot of power and having the right one can make a noticeable difference in your laptop's endurance. Our sister site, Tom's Hardware, just posted a detailed analysis of battery life from more than 100 different Solid State Drives and hard drives; the results may surprise you.

All of the storage drives were tested in a Lenovo IdeaPad Y700-17ISK with a Core i7-6700HQ CPU and 16GB of RAM. This slightly-older laptop has room for both a standard, SATA drive and a slim, PCIe-NVMe SSD, so it was able to accommodate all 108 drives they tested. It's not a particularly long-lasting laptop as its battery life ranged from 392 minutes (6:32 hours) on the most power efficient drive to 258 minutes (4:18 hours) on the worst. Tom's Hardware used the MobileMark 2014 battery test, which runs a variety of applications, but doesn't download any data from the Internet.

Because SSDs have no moving parts, you might expect that they would always use less power than mechanical hard drives. While most hard drives gulp more juice than their solid-state counterparts, there are some exceptions. Seven different hard drives allowed the laptop to last over 5 hours on a charge, while 13 of the 41 NVMe SSDs and 4 of the 58 SATA SSDs they tested fell below that mark. The most power efficient hard drive, the Seagate Momentus Thin (500GB) provided 331 minutes of battery life, which is more endurance than 7 of the NVMe SSDs and 10 of the SATA SSDs.

Overall, the average hard drive provided 5 hours and 16 minutes of battery life and the average NVMe PCIe SSD was actually a minute behind that. The mean time for a SATA SSD was a much-stronger 5 hours and 48 minutes.

While more laptops still use SSDs that connect via the SATA (Serial ATA) interface, an increasing number now use the PCIe-NVMe interface, which offers speeds that can be two to five times faster. However, with this added performance there's usually less power efficiency. According to Tom's Hardware's tests, the average PCIe-NVMe SSD lasted 33 minutes less on a charge. However, the longest-lasting NVMe-PCIe drive, the Samsung SM951 (256GB) endured for 6 hours and 24 minutes, which is only 10 minutes less than the best SATA drive, the SanDisk Z410 (6:34).

The longest-lasting SSD Tom's Hardware tested overall, which is a SATA model, is the SanDisk Z410 480GB (6:34) while the best PCIe-NVMe SSD is the Samsung SM951 256GB (6:24). However, when you're purchasing a brand new laptop, you don't have any choice about the make and model of SSD. Most manufacturers only disclose the SSD capacity and whether it's PCIe-NVMe or SATA.

In our Surface Laptop 3 review, we noted that the newly-debuted 15-inch model lasted only 8 hours on a charge. That's not a poor result, but it falls short of the premium laptop average and several competitors, like the Dell XPS 15. The firmware update Microsoft is pushing out to the Surface Laptop 3 (and Surface Pro 7) should lengthen that runtime, although we haven't yet been able to test that claim.

MS Office 2019 Standard gibt es für 195 Euro – diese Version steht Privatkunden normalerweise gar nicht zur Verfügung.

Laut "c’t" kaufen Kunden bei Edeka eine sogenannte Lizengo-Card und erhalten an der Kasse eine zwölfstellige PIN. Auf der Website von Lizengo erhalten Kunden über die PIN die gekaufte Software und einen Aktivierungsschlüssel.Auf Anfrage von "c’t" erklärte Lizengo, dass es sich bei den Schlüsseln um unbenutzte Lizenzen handele, die aus Überbeständen von Microsoft-Kunden stammten.

Im Test von "c’t" ließen sich die gekauften Produkte nahezu problemlos installieren und aktivieren. Wer dennoch Probleme mit seinem Schlüssel haben sollte, soll laut Lizengo einen neuen erhalten.
Auf Anfrage von "c’t" gab Microsoft keine eindeutige Auskunft darüber, ob das Unternehmen das Angebot von Lizengo als legal oder nicht bewertet. Der Konzern verwies aber auf Urteile des Europäischen Gerichtshofs und des Bundesgerichtshofs, die den Verkauf von Lizenzschlüsseln durch Lizengo nicht als illegal einstufen.

Allerdings kann Microsoft solche gekauften Aktivierungsschlüssel durch Updates blockieren. Die "c’t" rät Nutzern daher, den Kassenzettel aufzubewahren, um bei Lizenzproblemen innerhalb der Gewährleistungsfrist das Geld zurückverlangen zu können. Die Gewährleistungsfrist beträgt zwei Jahre.

Laut Bloomberg gilt der MacBook-Bann unter anderem in Fliegern der TUI Group, Thomas Cook Airlines, Air Italy und Air Transa. Damit reagieren die Unternehmen auf Berichte, dass die Batterien der Profi-Notebooks überhitzen und Feuer fangen können. Die europäische Flugsicherheitsbehörde Easa hat Anfang August einen entsprechenden Warnhinweis ausgegeben. Auch die US-Flugsicherheitsbehörde FAA rät zu einem vorsorglichen MacBook-Verbot.

Im Juni hatte Apple eine Rückrufaktion für die betroffenen MacBook-Pro-Modelle gestartet. Bei den Geräten bestehe Brandgefahr. Die fehlerhaften Batterien müssen ausgetauscht werden. Weitere Informationen hat dieser Artikel.

Das Problem betrifft Geräte, die zwischen September 2015 und Februar 2017 verkauft wurden. Mit einem wichtigen Sicherheits-Update will Microsoft mehrere Schwachstellen im Windows-Fernwartungsdienst RDP ausbessern. Anders als bei "Bluekeep" ist dieses Mal auch Windows 10 betroffen.

Während die seit Mai bekannte Sicherheitslücke "Bluekeep" noch immer tausende Windows-Rechner bedroht, kämpft Microsoft bereits an neuer Front: Am Dienstag veröffentlichte der Konzern mehrere Sicherheits-Patches für alle modernen Windows-Versionen, inklusive Windows 10. Denn wie sich herausgestellt hat, weist der Windows-Fernwartungsdienst RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) mehr kritische Schwachstellen auf, als bisher bekannt.

Das BSI mahnt Nutzer via Twitter, ihre Windows-Rechner zu aktualisieren. Denn: Die entdeckten Sicherheitslücken sind "wurmfähig". Das heißt, Malware kann sich von einem infizierten Rechner selbständig weiterverbreiten. Eine erfolgreiche Angriffskampagne könnte dadurch großen Schaden anrichten und wäre nur schwer wieder unter Kontrolle zu bringen. Wer seinen Rechner zeitnah aktualisiert, schützt also nicht nur sich selbst, sondern auch andere vernetzte Geräte.

Deshalb gibt es bislang aber auch kaum Dienste, die WebAuthn anbieten.WebAuthn funktioniert so: Unterstützt neben dem Browser auch der jeweilige Dienst diese Methode, benötigt der Nutzer nur noch eine Identifizierungskomponente, um sich anzumelden - etwa besagten Fingerabdrucksensor beim Smartphone.

Medion setzt bei diesem Mittelklasse-Gerät erneut auf ein 15,6 Zoll-Display (39,5 cm) mit IPS-Technologie und schmalen Rahmen. Der Bildschirm löst mit 1.920 mal 1.080 Pixel auf (Full HD). Das sind mittlerweile Standardwerte.Zum Arbeiten stehen 8 GB Arbeitsspeicher (DDR4-RAM) und ein 256 GB SSD-Speicher zur Verfügung. Das und der recht neue Intel Core i5-Prozessor spricht für eine solide Leistung und flottes Rechnen. Nur die Speicherkapazität ist nicht gerade üppig. In Zeiten der Cloud-Dienste spielt das aber eine zunehmend untergeordnete Rolle.

Der Hersteller verspricht bis zu sechs Stunden Akkulaufzeit und eine Schnellladefunktion, mit der die Batterie nach nur einer Stunde an der Steckdose wieder zu 80 Prozent geladen sein soll. The original recall was actually announced January 2018 by the CPSC due to "eight reports of battery packs overheating, melting, or charring, including three reports of property damage totaling $4,500 with one report of a minor injury involving a first degree burn to the hand." Therefore, 50,000 battery units were recalled.

Despite that, the CPSC has recently stated that HP received "eight new reports of battery packs in the U.S. overheating, melting, or charring, including one report of minor injury and two reports of property damage totaling $1,100." As a result, the recall now brings us to "about 78,500" units.

According to the CPSC, the batteries were "shipped in notebook computers and mobile workstations sold from December 2015 through April 2018 for between $300 and $4,000 and were also sold separately between December 2015 and December 2018 for between $50 and $90." HP is issuing a voluntary recall for the batteries inside several of its laptops. The move comes after the company discovered that a small percentage of these systems could pose a safety concern for customers.This action pertains to 0.1 percent of the HP systems sold globally over the past two years, and of those models affected, only 3 percent of those laptops could potentially overheat as a result of the battery issue. But you should still take action if your notebook is on the following list.

To find out if your laptop’s battery should be replaced, HP is asking that you visit this page and download a battery validation tool that will run on your machine. HP will then come directly to your home or place of business to perform the replacement, once you set up an appointment.

If it turns out that your HP laptop battery does need to be replaced, you’ll be able to still use your machine, but only while it’s plugged in. The downloaded software will enable a battery safety mode that will fully discharge the battery; after that, you’ll be able to use the laptop on AC power. Once the battery is replaced, this limitation will be lifted.

So what exactly happened? HP has identified a specific battery supplier to be the source of the issue. “No matter how small the number, we want to be treating this super seriously,” said Mike Nash, HP’s vice president of customer experience. “It was a very isolated issue in the manufacturing. And it's a thing we all learned from.”
