And to those who say the iPad isn't a device for real work, or it's just for consuming content? The iPad's success is a sign of the wide range of things people need computers for. I know podcasters who edit shows on iPads, and on the other end of the spectrum, Avi Greengart, consumer analyst at Techsponential, agrees.

Those are the ingredients of a decade-defining laptop. Since 2015, the Dell XPS 13, as well as the XPS 13 2-in-1 and XPS 15 have sat at the top at many a tech publication’s best list, essentially beating a certain Cupertino juggernaut at its own game. This is the story of how Dell created its own lane and changed how everyone (including Apple) made laptops as a result.

It all started at CES 2015, when Dell unveiled the latest model of the XPS 13, the flagship notebook in the company’s premium line. At first glance, the laptop looked like previous entries until you opened it up. And then you saw those bezels, or lack thereof. Teaming with Sharp, the XPS team had all but eliminated those unsightly thick bezels, replacing them with the first InfinityEdge display. The smaller bezels allowed Dell to significantly shrink the XPS 13’s profile, capturing the title of the world’s smallest 13-inch. It was all a part of an aggressive plan put in place by Donnie Oilphant, senior director of product marketing for XPS.

The original rollout plan for InfinityEdge was to take place over 10 years and three phases, the first of which would have significantly reduced the side bezels, leaving the top and bottom bezels intact. Instead, the team jumped to phase two. That gave us the three-sided InfinityEdge but also introduced the bottom bezel-mounted nosecam. But the company restored the camera to its rightful place two years later, creating the world’s smallest webcam.

The Surface Pro 6 fixed the one thing holding Microsoft back from offering a device that fulfills its vision of a more mobile Windows 10 experience. The original Surface Pro introduced us to a new type of detachable Windows 10 device, but it had some serious shortcomings. Battery life was an issue for several years running and damaged the detachable’s promise of portability. It wasn't until the Surface Pro 6 that we started feeling comfortable using it away from an outlet.

I know what you’re thinking –– value equals compromise. That’s not necessarily the case with the L-Series. The L14 can be outfitted with an optional aluminum lid. The bases of the systems are constructed from ABS plastic while the L13 Yoga is sporting an aluminum-magnesium alloy lid with a plastic base. The L13 and L15 are completely made of ABS plastic. Due to these lightweight materials, the 0.7-inch L13 is the lightest of the bunch at 3.1 pounds, while the 0.8-inch L15 is the heaviest at 4.4 pounds.

Regarding security, each of the laptops comes equipped with several security features including a dTPM 2.0 chip, a fingerprint scanner, an infrared camera and the ThinkShutter, a physical camera shutter to guard against prying eyes.

With the exception of the L13 Yoga, L-Series laptops have up to 3 display options. The L14, for example can range between an HD, 220-nit panel up to a FHD, 300 nit-display. As far as specs go, each of the laptops can be configured with a Core i3, i5 or i7 10th-gen Intel vPro processor. But both the L14 and 15 also offer the option of AMD Ryzen Pro 4000 Mobile processors and RAM up to 32GB. The L13 and Yoga are limited to 16GB of RAM. For storage, each of the laptops offers up to a 1TB SSD, but the L14 and 15 also have a 2TB hard drive.

Der Akku gehört zu den Verschleißteilen eines MacBooks. Wir möchten gerne von euch wissen, wie viele Ladezyklen euer Akku schon durchlebt hat, wie alt der Stromspender ist und in welchem Zustand sich die Batterie befindet. Wichtig: Die Umfrage richtet sich ausschließlich an Besitzer eines MacBooks mit vom Anwender nicht wechselbarer Batterie. Several owners of the new premium laptop have taken to Reddit and Microsoft's forums to report hairline cracks in the screen that appeared spontaneously. Microsoft has asked most of those customers to pay for repairs out-of-pocket, however, the company is now acknowledging the potential of a more widespread quality control problem.

"I have the same problem. Micro crack appeared in the right hand side of my Laptop 3. No damage caused by me," one forum member wrote. "There is another thread on this forum describing the same issue (can't post the link....) from several other people...There appears to be a design and/or manufacturing defect."

"Same problem here. I never ever had a cracked display in any phone of [sic] laptop the last 20 years. And with my new surface laptop 3 I had spontaneously a crack in one month. I must pay 560,- euro for a replacement within the warranty period," another user wrote. In rare cases, users have gotten Microsoft to agree to replace the screen without cost. However, most of the time, reps are telling furious Surface owners that it's on them to expense repairs.

ZDNet reached out to Microsoft and got the following response: "A limited number of Surface Laptop customers have contacted Microsoft and have reported screens that have cracked through no fault of their own. We are evaluating the situation and investigating the root cause of the claims." Li-Ionen-Akkus besitzen eine Schutzschaltung, das heißt, euer Akku wird zwar als leer angezeigt, besitzt aber noch eine Restladung. In seltenen Fällen kann es aber dazu kommen, dass sich der Akku eures Smartphones lediglich sehr tief entladen hat. Das geschieht, wenn ihr euer Gerät über einen längeren Zeitraum nicht mehr in Benutzung hattet und sich der Akku bis zur nahezu vollständigen Erschöpfung der Kapazität selbst entlädt. In diesem Fall existiert keine Spannung mehr an den externen Kontakten, aufgrund derer euer Ladegerät den scheinbar defekten Akkumulator nicht mehr aufladen möchte.

Das Smartphone reagiert dann nicht direkt, wenn ihr es ans Ladegerät anschließen. Es kann einige Minuten dauern, bis das Gerät etwas anzeigt. Mit etwas Glück könnt ihr euer Handy nach einigen Minuten neu starten.

Ihr könnt in diesem Fall ebenfalls versuchen, euer Smartphone drahtlos zu laden.

Mit Ladegeräten ohne elektronische Akku-Erkennung könnte euer Akku ebenfalls soweit geladen werden, das die Schutzelektronik die Kontakte wieder freigibt.

Da der Akku keinen Strom mehr auf normalem Wege aufnehmen kann, kursieren die Empfehlungen, den Akku mit einem höheren „Stromstoß“ wiederzubeleben – beispielsweise mit einem Trafo, an dem ihr die Spannung einstellen könnt.

ABER VORSICHT: Ihr solltet das unbedingt dem Reparatur-Shop überlassen, wenn ihr auf einen Knall und eine Stichflamme wegen Überspannung und einen endgültig terminierten Akku verzichten könnt. Besitzt ihr keine Schutzbrille und feuerfeste Kleidung, solltet ihr mit eurem Lithium-Ionen - oder Lithium-Polymer-Akku den nächsten Experten aufsuchen.

Könnt ihr ausschließen, dass der Akku oder das Ladekabel defekt sind, kann es auch folgende Probleme geben:

Anschlussbuchse defekt: Kontakte sind verbogen oder verdreckt. Lösung: Reinigt die Kontakte mit einem Pinsel oder einer trockenen Zahnbürste. Verwendet keine spitzen, metallischen Gegenstände wie eine Büroklammer – es besteht Kurzschluss-Gefahr. Alternativ können Kontakt- oder Druckluft-Spray helfen; auch ein Staubsauger leistet nicht nur bei der Tastatur-Reinigung gute Dienste. Hat das nicht geholfen, könnt ihr euch bei einer Handy-Reparatur eine neue Ladebuchse einbauen lassen. Je nach Modell und Reparatur-Service kann das um die 80 Euro kosten.

Wenn der Handy-Akku* nicht mehr lädt, Schauen Besitzer vom iPhones, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge und anderen Geräten in die (schwarze) Röhre. Lässt sich euer Smartphone, Handy oder Tablet nicht mehr aufladen, kann das unterschiedliche Ursachen haben. Im besten Fall stimmt etwas mit dem Ladegerät oder -kabel nicht, es kann aber auch ein Problem mit dem Smartphone oder dem Akku selbst vorliegen, das Schwierigkeiten mit dem Ladevorgang verursacht. Wir zeigen euch hier einige Lösungsansätze, wie ihr euer Android-Gerät wieder zum Laufen bringen könnt.

Euer Handy Akku lädt nicht mehr und ihr fragt euch, ob er defekt ist? Ein neues Smartphone muss natürlich nicht direkt her, dennoch ist es ärgerlich, wenn Geräte wie das S7 nicht mehr laden. Aber was tun, wenn das Samsung-Handy nicht mehr lädt und welche Tricks helfen bei anderen Mobilgeräten? Da die Ursachen vielfältig sind, solltet ihr Schritt für Schritt die Möglichkeiten durchgehen, um die passende Lösung für das Problem zu finden.

In modernen Handys sind in der Regel Lithium-Ionen- oder Lithium-Polymer-Akkumulatoren verbaut. Kommt der Strom nicht bei eurem Gerät an, prüft zunächst Folgendes:

Ist das Ladegerät richtig angeschlossen oder gibt es einen Wackelkontakt?

Tauscht das Ladekabel aus und probiert es erneut. Klappt es jetzt?

Falls ihr ein USB-Ladegerät verwendet, welches über einen normalen Stecker an das Stromnetz angeschlossen wird: Tauscht auch dieses aus und probiert erneut, ob es nun funktioniert.

Habt ihr lediglich ein Ladegerät zuhause, nehmt ein handelsübliches USB-Kabel mit microUSB-Anschluss und stöpselt dieses an euren PC an. Lässt sich das Handy auf diese Art und Weise aufladen?
Könnt ihr das Ladekabel an einem anderen Gerät (Smartphone, MP3-Player etc.) testen und einen Defekt ausschließen?

Lasst den Akku außerhalb des Smartphones für mindestens 20 Minuten liegen und startet den Ladevorgang anschließend erneut.

Habt ihr eine neue Speicherkarte im Handy oder eine App aus einer nicht ganz so seriösen Quelle installiert? Macht dies rückgängig und prüft, ob sich der Akku wieder laden lässt.

Aldi Nord verkauft ab heute, dem 28. August 2019, mit dem Medion Akoya S6446 ein neues leichtes Windows-Notebook, mit Schnellladefunktion für 549 Euro. GIGAs Hardware-Experte Robert verrät euch, für wen das Angebot einen zweiten Blick wert ist.

Ein weiteres Mal hat sich Medion mit Aldi zusammengetan und bietet seit heute in den Filialen des Discounters ein neues preiswertes Business-Notebook an. Der 15,6 Zoll große Laptop bietet einen i5-Prozessor aus Intels 8. Generation, 8 GB Arbeitsspeicher und eine 256 GB große SSD, auf der Windows 10 Home in der 64-bit-Version bereits vorinstalliert ist. Das Gewicht fällt mit 1,78 Kilogramm angenehm gering aus, so federleicht wie ein kleines Ultrabook ist das Medion Akoya S6446 aber nicht.

Beim Browsen und während simpler Office-Arbeiten langweilt sich der sparsame i5-Prozessor beinahe. Die Leistung der CPU reicht locker aus, um den Laptop auch für Fotobearbeitung und zum Schneiden kleinerer Videoprojekte zu nutzen – hier könnte sich lediglich die Kapazität des RAMs als Flaschenhals entpuppen. Benutzt man das Notebook aber ausschließlich für leichtere Aufgaben, gibt es keine Schwierigkeiten.

Ein viel größeres Problem stellt die Akkukapazität des Medion Akoya S6446 dar. Die fällt mit gerade einmal 42 Wh eher gering aus. Da Medion auf einen stromsparenden U-Prozessor von Intel setzt, ist der Verbrauch des Laptops zwar nicht sehr hoch – über den kompletten Arbeitstag kommt man mit einer einzigen Akkuladung aber wahrscheinlich trotzdem nicht.

Ist der Akku mal leer, kann er dank Schnellladefunktion in Windeseile wieder aufgeladen werden. Innerhalb von 60 Minuten klettert die Akkuanzeige von 0 auf beachtliche 80 Prozent.

Windows 10 Home ist auf dem Gerät bereits vorinstalliert. Das Starten des Betriebssystems und von anderen Programmen und Anwendungen geht dank der verbauten PCIe-SSD sehr zügig vonstatten.

Mit dem Acer Liquid Extend möchte das taiwanische Unternehmen in einigen Monaten ein Laptop-Dock auf den Markt bringen, mit dem man sein Windows 10 Mobile-Smartphone mit Continuum-Funktion unterwegs in ein Laptop verwandeln kann. Die lokale Nutzung auf dem Desktop klappt schon ganz gut, doch damit erhalten solche Smartphones deutlich größere Freiheiten und es ergeben sich mehr Möglichkeiten - mit Vor- und Nachteilen.

Das Acer Liquid Extend ist im Grunde nur die Hülle eines Laptops mit Display, Akku und Eingabegeräten. Angetrieben wird das Laptop-Dock dann von einem Smartphone wie dem Acer Liquid Jade Primo, welches die Continuum-Funktion unterstützt. Statt auf einem normalen Monitor wird der Desktop-Modus von Windows 10 Mobile so auf dem Laptop angezeigt und kann dort mit dem Touchpad und der Tastatur genutzt werden. Der große Vorteil bei dieser Lösung liegt darin, dass die persönlichen Daten immer auf dem Smartphone bzw. dem Cloud-Speicher hinterlegt sind und man so auch immer Verbindung zum Netz hat, da alles über das Smartphone läuft. Zudem ist im Notebook ein Akku verbaut, der für höhere Laufzeiten sorgt und vermutlich auch das Smartphone aufladen kann. Verbunden werden die beiden Geräte mit einem USB Typ C-Kabel. So wird die Datenübertragung und Kommunikation geregelt.

Ohne Smartphone unbrauchbar

Der große Nachteil bei so einem Laptop-Dock ist aber auch, dass man sonst nichts damit anfangen kann. Das Laptop funktioniert einfach nicht, wenn man das Smartphone nicht anschließt. Es ist zwingend ein Windows 10 Mobile-Smartphone mit Continuum-Funktion nötig, um dieses Zubehör sinnvoll nutzen zu können. Verkauft man sein Smartphone, dann muss man das Dock auch loswerden. Informationen zum Preis fehlen noch, der Marktstart wird auch erst im 3. Quartal erwartet. Acer hat es demnach nicht wirklich eilig mit der Einführung.

Samsung's extinct Galaxy Note 7 is perhaps the most notable offender for having faulty batteries. As a result, all wireless earbuds are destined to become paperweights after a few years. Worse yet, they become paperweights that can't be recycled and shouldn't be thrown away. Audio startup Acouva thinks it has a solution: swappable batteries. The company's Acouva One earbuds feature a modular battery that can be easily removed and replaced when it runs out of juice after roughly 5 hours.

With swappable batteries, you can remove the button cell battery from the housing of the Acouva earbuds when they wear out. This is important for a few reasons. The obvious being that the Acouva One earbuds won't become unusable after the original battery inevitably dies.Additionally, sliding the dead battery off and popping a new one is much faster than placing the earbuds in their case and waiting for them to recharge. So as long as you're carrying a spare set of batteries, the Acouva One will get you back to your music in a matter of seconds instead of hours.

Arguably just as important, the dead batteries can be recycled because they separate from the earbuds' plastic housing. Apple's AirPods have been criticized for being the worst kind of e-waste (it's worth reading Wired's article on the subject). But it's not just Apple --- every wireless earbuds with a built-in battery is guilty. I went hands-on with the Acouva earbuds, and have mixed feelings about them. While I'm a big proponent of replaceable batteries, the product itself --- especially the case --- needs some refining. The Acouva looked cheap compared to other earbuds in the price range, and the case feels like a prop.

On the other hand, the ovular nozzle should allow for long-term comfort, and Acouva boasts that its bone-conduction microphone will eliminate background noises during voice calls.
Acouva is taking a risk by selling an earbud with a potentially expanded lifespan. If the housings outlast the batteries, then consumers won't be forced to buy a new pair of earbuds every few years. That's great for us, but is it an economically viable solution? We'll find out soon when the Acouva ships later this year.

HP has announced a voluntary recall on a number of batteries that were shipped with the company's laptops or sold as replacements between March 2013 and August 2015 due to fire and burn hazards.The batteries were shipped with HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP Envy, Compaq Presario and HP Pavilion laptops and also sold as replacements and provided through support channels.

HP is offering a validation program that can check if the battery in your laptop is affected by the recall, which you can find here. It also provides instructions to check your battery without installing any software.The batteries being recalled are in HP, Compaq, Compaq Presario, ProBook, Envy and Pavilion notebooks. Battery packs sold on their own are also being recalled. Affected batteries are black in color and have bar codes that start with the following: 6BZLU, 6CGFK, 6CGFQ, 6CZMB, 6DEMA, 6DEMH, 6DGAL, 6EBVA.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission advises anyone with an affected battery to remove batteries and only use their laptops on AC power. Those who need replacement batteries can call HP at 1-888-202-4320 or go to the company's website for the recall to see if their notebook is affected.The recall affects units in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In one case, HP received a report of overheating that caused "melting and charring and causing about $1,000 in property damage."

A trending post on the r/Dell subreddit describes how an XPS 15 exploded for no apparent reason as it charged overnight.Redditor "u/mdntfox" writes that they had plugged the laptop in before going to bed, then heard a fizzing sound and saw a "bright orange inferno" lighting up the room. The XPS 15 owner ran out to grab water but returned to find the room filled with smoke.

"My house still smells like smoke, and I’m worried these fumes are toxic and cancerous," the Redditor posted. "My lungs still feel funky. I had to move my pet out of the house and Into my neighbors the smell was so strong. I don’t even now [sic] if it’s safe still having that thing in my home!"

Dell responded to our request for comment and said that an investigation into the affected laptop determined that the explosion was caused by an internal failure within one of the lithium-ion battery cells. The company claims that this is not a systemic issue and that all other XPS 15s are safe to use, but did not provide evidence showing that other potentially at-risk laptops had been looked into.

Images of the burnt XPS 15 show the extent of the damage. If you're squeamish, you might want to look away.
As you can see from these images (see the Reddit post for links to more images), the source of the explosion appears to be the XPS 15's 84Wh lithium-ion battery but the eruption was large enough to cause damage to the display, touchpad and deck of the laptop.

This particular XPS 15 9560 isn't under any warranty, however, Dell previously agreed to replace the batteries of out-of-warranty XPS 15 9550s after several users complained that battery swelling was causing their touchpad to lift. If you own an XPS 15, you might consider keeping your laptop unplugged overnight or when you are out of the house until Dell can provide evidence that all other units are safe. What's most concerning is that Dell confirmed that the explosion was caused by a battery error but didn't provide any reason for why it might have happened (damage to the laptop or using an unsupported third-party charger have been known to cause these types of incidents).

Aldi Süd bietet am 3. Dezember das Medion Akoya E6422 (MD 99680) Windows 10 Notebook mit neustem Intel Skylake Prozessor der 6. Generation für nur 499€ an. Nachdem kürzlich das Medion Akoya E6418 (MD 99620) bei Aldi Nord mit älterem Prozessor für 100€ mehr verkauft wurde, möchte man mit einem etwas kleineren aber neueren Prozessor und geringerem Preis weitere Interessenten ansprechen. Durch die verbaute SSD dürfte die Performance trotzdem sehr gut ausfallen.

Das Medion Akoya E6422 (MD 99680) kommt mit einem 15,6 Zoll großen Full HD-Display und einer Auflösung von 1920 x 1080 Pixeln. Es handelt sich um ein IPS-Panel, mit dem die Blickwinkel und Darstellung sehr gut ausfallen dürften. Im Inneren arbeitet dieses Mal ein Intel Core i3-6100U Skylake-Prozessor der neusten Generation, der mit bis zu 2,3 GHz getaktet ist. Dazu gibt es 4 GB RAM und eine schnelle 128-GB-SSD. Wie nicht anders zu erwarten, kommt das Medion Akoya E6422 (MD 99680) direkt mit Windows 10 Home. An den Seiten finden sich einige Anschlüsse wie 2x USB 2.0, 2x USB 3.0 und ein HDMI-Ausgang. Damit lässt sich das Notebook problemlos an einem größeren Monitor betreiben. Ihr dürft beispielsweise alte Handys, Computerbauteile und leere Druckerpatronen damit entsorgen.

ABER: Laptop-Akkus, Energiesparlampen (Achtung, mitunter giftiges Quecksilber!) und Drucker-Toner dürfen nicht versendet werden.

Großgeräte wie Fernseher oder Kühlschränke müssen nur bei Neukauf eines entsprechenden Geräts zurückgenommen werden.

Kleine Altgeräte (keine Kante darf länger als 25 cm sein) wie Smartphones, elektrische Zahnbürsten etc. müssen die großen Händler immer zurücknehmen.

Auch die Hersteller selbst müssen eine Möglichkeit der Rückgabe von Altgeräten schaffen (§ 19 ElektroG).

Durch die 400-m²-Regelung müssen Supermärkte also in der Regel keinen Elektroschrott annehmen, Media Markt oder Saturn hingegen schon.

Elektroschrott: Ankauf und verschenken

Der Schrott selbst hat häufig einen Eigenwert. Metalle werden beim Recycling zurückgewonnen und erneut verwendet. Ein Handy hat beispielsweise einen Goldwert von einem Euro. Eine Tonne Platinen enthalten soviel Gold, Kupfer, Zinn und andere Stoffe, dass sie für etwa 7000 Euro gehandelt werden.

Über die Webseite Ebay-Kleinanzeigen könnt ihr euren Elektroschrott auch online zum Verschenken anbieten.

Es gibt auch genügend Tüftler und Bastler, die euch den Elektroschrott abkaufen würden, sofern interessant genug.

Um den Wert von Elektroschrott zu testen, könnt ihr beispielsweise online schauen, ob defekte Geräte, die ihr auch habt, bereits zum Kauf angeboten werden – und falls ja, zu welchem Preis.

In größeren Mietshäusern gibt es oftmals einen Raum für Sperrmüll. Eventuell kann man dort auch Elektroschrott lagern, bis der Sperrmüll und Elektroschrott kommt.

In sehr wenigen Städten gibt es Tonnen oder Behälter, die öffentlich wie Altglascontainer aufgestellt sind.

SSD-Speicher gibt es je nach Modell bis zu vier Terabyte, der Arbeitsspeicher ist gleich groß geblieben. Bis zu 16 Gigabyte RAM bei den kleineren und bis zu 32 Gigabyte bei den größeren Modellen. Samsung is being coy about what lies under the hood of the Galaxy Book Alpha. The only hint we get is that it'll run on Intel 10th Gen processors. The Galaxy Book Flex is powered by Intel Core Ice Lake chips, so we're hopeful Samsung sticks with U-series processors and not the low-powered Y-series variant.

Interestingly, Samsung says the Galaxy Book Flex Alpha will have UHD graphics, not the Iris Plus graphics that pair with higher-end Ice Lake processors. That suggests a Core i3 CPU or a lower-end Core i5 chip. Other specs include up to 512GB of SSD storage and RAM of either 8GB or 12GB.The Galaxy Book Flex Alpha is a winner if it gets anywhere near Samsung's ambitious 17.5-hour battery life rating. We'll believe it when we see it --- until then, take this claim with a grain of salt.

I can't remember the last time I've been so excited to review a Samsung laptop. It's not that I expect the Galaxy Book Flex Alpha to outperform the best laptops, but the Alpha's QLED display could make it an incredible value. If that 13.3-inch QLED display is as good as we're hoping, and Samsung didn't compromise on performance to get the price so low, then the Galaxy Book Flex Alpha could ask serious questions of the HP Envy 13, our current favorite sub-$1,000 laptop.

We're bummed, however, that the Galaxy Book Flex Alpha will only be available in Royal Silver in the U.S., and not the gorgeous blue you can get on the Galaxy Book Flex.Samsung hasn't said anything about built-in Qi wireless charging on the Galaxy Book Flex Alpha, so that could be another cost-cutting measure Samsung made to bring the price down. We wouldn't mind too much if that gimmicky feature was left out. A bigger loss is the stylus slot (Active Pen sold separately) found on the Galaxy Book Flex but not the Alpha version.

The Galaxy Book Flex Alpha is an ultra-portable laptop, measuring just 0.55 inches thick and weighing in at 2.6 pounds. We've reviewed lighter laptops, but you shouldn't have any problem slipping the Book Flex Alpha in your bag and taking it on trips. On the right side of the laptop are two USB 3.0 ports and a microSD card slot while the left side houses a USB Type-C input, an HDMI port and a headphone/mic jack. We wish there was a Thunderbolt 3 connection but not everyone needs super-fast transfer speeds or to connect to multiple 4K monitors.

Samsung is bringing the technology it uses on its high-end TVs to the Alpha's display.
