2. Tastenkombinationen

Wer einmal mit den Shortcuts genannten Tastenkürzeln gearbeitet hat, möchte diese nicht mehr missen. Zu den wichtigsten, informativsten Funktionen unter Windows 10 gehört das Info-Center. 5. Snap Assist

  Microsoft plant offenbar, das Betriebssystem Windows 10 künftig in Form eines Software-Abos anzubieten. Das berichtet die Tech-Seite ZDnet.com. Der Dienst namens "Microsoft Managed Desktop" steht wohl kurz vor der Veröffentlichung. Das Angebot richtet sich in erster Linie an Firmen, die durch das Abo-Modell sämtliche Wartungs- und Supportarbeiten für ihre Geräte an Microsoft auslagern können.

  
  

  Das Abo-Modell sieht vor, dass Nutzer ihre Windows 10-Geräte nicht kaufen, sondern für einen monatlichen Betrag mieten. Durch die Abo-Gebühr werden auch zusätzliche Services abgedeckt, wie etwa regelmäßige Updates sowie andere Support-Aufgaben. Firmen müssten sich nicht mehr mit IT-Problemen herumschlagen und könnten Kosten sparen. Das Monats-Abo soll pro Nutzer abgerechnet werden.

  
  

  Microsoft bietet bereits ähnliche Support-Services wie das "Microsoft 365"-Abo oder das Leasing-Angebot "Surface as a Service". Über die Einführung des neuen Abo-Services "Microsoft Managed Desktop" war in den USA bereits spekuliert worden.   Am längsten auf dem Markt ist die Standard-SSD im 2,5-Zoll-Format mit SATA-Schnittstelle. Sie steckt in einem Gehäuse, hat das Format einer klassischen 2,5-Zoll-Festplatte und stellt oft mit die einfachste und günstigste SSD-Erweiterungsmöglichkeit für Desktop-PCs und Notebooks dar. 2,5-Zoll-SSDs mit 500 Gigabyte (GB) sind schon für unter 100 Euro zu haben.

  
  

  Wer das Speed-Maximum herausholen möchte, sollte sich M.2-SSDs mit NVMe-Schnittstelle anschauen. Diese sind um einiges flotter unterwegs als klassische SATA-SSDs. "Für einen Privatanwender, der nur alltägliche Arbeiten mit dem Rechner macht, reicht eine SATA-SSD vollkommen aus", schränkt aber Manuel Christa vom Fachmagazin "PC Games Hardware" ein. NVMe-SSDs seien besonders geeignet, wenn tagtäglich große Datenmengen bewegt werden müssen.

  
  

  Kompakter Newcomer
  
  Die gehäuselosen M.2-SSDs erinnern optisch eher an einen Speicherriegel als an eine Festplatte. Sie bestehen nur aus einer kompakten Steckplatine mit Speicherchips und Steuerelektronik – ideal für Notebooks. 2,5-Zoll-SSDs benötigen einen Laufwerksschacht, eine M.2-SSD kann direkt auf die Hauptplatine gesteckt werden. Beim Notebook muss aber ein geeigneter Steckplatz frei und über eine Serviceklappe erreichbar sein.

  
  

  Die immer 22 Millimeter breiten M.2-SSD-Karten gibt es in verschiedenen Längen. Zwar hat sich mittlerweile die Variante mit 80 Millimetern Länge durchgesetzt.   M.2-SSDs gibt es aber auch noch mit zwei verschiedenen Schnittstellen. Einmal mit der klassischen SATA- und einmal mit deutlich schnelleren NVMe-Verbindung. Unterscheiden kann man die Schnittstellen schon beim Blick auf die Steckkontaktleiste: M.2-SSDs mit SATA haben zwei Einkerbungen, M.2-SSDs mit NVMe nur eine.   It’s hard to not sound like complete sycophants when talking about how much we love the XPS 13. It’s been our favorite laptop for the past five years, and the late-2019 version only makes it better. Dell had already accomplished what we’ve been begging it to do for years and moved the webcam back up to the top of the screen where it belongs. That alone made this better than its predecessor for anyone who plans to video call or web conference regularly. Now, Dell has updated to Intel’s 10th-gen Comet Lake CPUs, including a six-core Core i7 that makes this the fastest 13-inch laptop money can buy.

  
  

  As with the XPS 13s that came before, this version is light, portable, and exceedingly attractive. It’s gradually moved away from the MacBook silver styling which is so common in the notebook market and has forged an identity all of its own. You’ll want to keep the white interior and “Frost” exterior clean to make sure it stays looking fresh, but we feel confident that you’ll love this laptop enough to make the effort.

  
  

  The display is absolutely gorgeous no matter which resolution you opt for and internal hardware upgrades make sure that this laptop is capable of just about anything you throw at it, from everyday web browsing to more intensive tasks like photo editing. Don’t expect to play the latest and greatest games at high framerates, but that’s not really what this laptop is for.

  
  

  Always the bridesmaid and rarely the bride, the Asus ZenBook 13 UX333 is so close to being our favorite 13-inch laptop ever made. If it didn’t exist in a world with the XPS 13, it just might take the top spot. As it is, it’s relegated to a very near second place, and that’s nothing to sneeze at.
  
  The ZenBook 13 is certainly the more affordable of the two devices. For that lower price, you get almost as much hardware as the more expensive Dell machine. Specifically, well under $1,000 gets you an Intel Core i5 CPU with four cores, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. That’s more than enough to perform any day to day task. Though the XPS 13 starts at $900, the one you’ll want (with 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD) starts at $1,200.

Its battery life is one of the best at this size, stretching well past a full workday, and it’s slim and lightweight enough to be competitive with the most portable notebooks in this space.   Yes, yes — we know. The Razer Blade Stealth isn’t supposed to really be a gaming laptop. All of that changed with the latest version, however, which incorporated Intel’s 10th-gen Ice Lake CPUs that are faster and offer better entry-level graphics thanks to Intel’s latest iteration of its Iris Plus graphics. Even better, Razer somehow stuffed a real GPU, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650, inside this diminutive chassis, making the Blade Stealth the best gaming laptop in its class.

  
  

  What’s most encouraging with the 2019 Razer Blade Stealth is that it betters its predecessor so well. The upgraded hardware gives it a serious leg up on the Stealth that came before and it takes the lead against many other laptops sporting the same graphics chip. While there are certainly more powerful gaming laptops out there, it’s rare to find one at 13-inches that doesn’t have a terrible screen or awful battery life.

  
  

  The Razer Blade Stealth is a beautiful laptop, and it has enough grunt to play all modern games at reasonable frame rates, as long as you keep the graphical detail under control. Larger Razer laptops do outshine its gaming ability, and other laptops on this list will stomp all over its battery life, but for a laptop that performs well in and out of games and looks good doing it, this is our favorite in the 13-inch space.

  MacBooks are generally thin, and there was a time when the MacBook Air was the thinnest laptop you could buy — no Windows machine came close. Today, Windows laptops are thinner. And while the tapered MacBook Air is thinner at its thinnest point (0.16 inches), it’s 0.63 at its thickest, while the MacBook Pro 13 is 0.59 inches across the board.

  
  

  Not only is the MacBook Pro 13 thinner, but it’s also significantly more powerful. The great thing is that many laptops today have Thunderbolt 3 ports that can connect to external GPU enclosures for some extra gaming oomph.   You’ll want enough storage for the operating system, your applications, and all of the documents and other files you’ll need to keep up with your studies. Microsoft recommends 32GB for Windows 10 itself, and you can figure that at least 50GB will be required once your laptop is up and running. Then, you’ll want to factor in your applications and keep in mind that many games can take up a few gigabytes (or more) all by themselves. That means that a 128GB SSD might be a little light and that 256GB is likely a better starting point.

  
  

  If you want to balance cost (the larger the SSD, the more you’ll pay, naturally) and expandability, then look for a laptop with an SD card slot. Today, you can add a 400GB micro SD card for around $60, meaning that if your local storage gets maxed out it’s possible to greatly expand the space available for your most important documents. Also, if you use a cloud storage service like Microsoft’s OneDrive that allows you to store all of your documents offline and then download only those you need right now, then you can save on local storage requirements.

  
  

  Google’s Chrome OS might be a better choice for any college student whose schoolwork is limited to web use and word processing. Chrome OS is very lightweight and demands less powerful components, and so a Chromebook can provide much better performance and longer battery life for much less money.
  
  Also, Chromebooks are arguably more secure and more regularly updated than Windows 10 and MacOS, and they’re more limited and thus less likely to tempt a college student to waste time on non-essentials.   Can tablets work as laptops?
  
  If by “tablet,” you mean one of the many Windows 10 2-in-1s with detachable keyboards, like the Surface Go that’s included in our list, then absolutely — a tablet is the same as a laptop once you convert it to laptop form. If by “tablet,” you mean a true mobile device like an iPad, then that’s a more difficult question to answer.

  
  

  Yes, you can attach a keyboard to an iPad and use it as a more traditional laptop, and soon enough you’ll even be able to add a mouse or touchpad. But iOS doesn’t support the same kinds of feature-complete applications that you’ll find on Windows 10 and MacOS, at least not yet. You’ll need to be very careful to check all of your application requirements — now and in the future — to make sure you can get all of your work done. If you don’t have any specific applications that won’t run on such a tablet, though, then sure, you could benefit from its very lightweight chassis and relatively simple software.

  Weitere Neuerungen sind beispielsweise neue Emoticons für Nachrichten. Die Windows-Uhr soll unter anderem dank Software-Zeitstempel genauer laufen. Das Programm "Snipping Tool" mit dem sich Screenshots vom Bildschirm machen lassen, wird entfernt. Stattdessen hat Microsoft das Werkzeug "Bildschirmskizze" ins allgemeine Betriebssystem ausgelagert. Snipping Tool soll aber als App im Windows Store verfügbar sein.

  
  

  Viele Neuerungen erwarten Nutzer auch im Microsoft-Browser Edge. So soll das automatische Abspielen von Videos für jede Seite individuell eingestellt werden. Auch die PDF-Funktion des Browsers wurde verbessert. Im Lesemodus gibt es eine Option "Zeilenfokussierung", wo Nutzer einstellen können, ob drei oder fünf Zeilen angezeigt werden sollen. Zudem wurde das Menü des Browser überarbeitet und wirkt nun aufgeräumter.

"Die Kunden wollen die volle Funktionalität - vielleicht nicht gleich am ersten Tag." Ein isolierter Cloud-Dienst sei deshalb für viele schließlich doch nicht praktikabel gewesen. Wie viele Kunden diesen Dienst aktuell nutzen, nannte Microsoft nicht.

  
  

  Das Treuhänder-Angebot gemeinsam mit der Deutschen Telekom stellt Microsoft deshalb komplett ein, wie das Unternehmen auch in einem Blogeintrag mitteilte. Über zwei weitere Rechenzentren in Frankfurt und Berlin sollen die Cloud-Angebote künftig an das internationale Netzwerk angeschlossen sein und den vollen Funktionsumfang bieten.   Das Ende März in Kraft getretene Gesetz sieht vor, dass amerikanische Online-Firmen US-Ermittlungsbehörden grundsätzlich Zugang zu Daten eigener Bürger gewähren müssen, auch wenn sie außerhalb der USA gespeichert sind. Zugleich können sich die Firmen dagegen wehren, wenn es um Bürger anderer Länder geht oder dadurch Gesetze anderer Staaten verletzt würden.   Auf Macs ist es möglich, Spaces genannte Arbeitsbereiche zu erstellen. "Damit besteht die Möglichkeit, Fenster vieler geöffneter Programme und Ordner auf verschiedene Spaces zu verteilen", erklärt Alexander Zschweigert von "MacEinsteiger.de". "So arbeitet man noch organisierter." Einen einzelnen Arbeitsbereich erstellt man, in dem man den Mauszeiger bei einem offenen Programmfenster nach oben aus dem Bildschirmbereich herauszieht. Dann erscheint eine Übersicht verfügbarer Schreibtische, denen sich dieses Fenster zuordnen lässt, so Zschweigert.   Wer etwa nach einem bestimmten Absatz in einer Datei sucht, braucht diese nicht komplett zu öffnen. Mit Hilfe der Leertaste kann der Nutzer die Schnellvorschau des jeweiligen Dokuments öffnen.   In MacOS ist ein Programm namens File Vault integriert, mit dem sich alle Daten bei Bedarf verschlüsseln lassen – das bietet Schutz vor unbefugten Zugriffen, etwa, wenn der Rechner gestohlen wird. Das bedeutet aber auch: Ohne einen Wiederherstellungsschlüssel beziehungsweise das Anmeldekennwort des Administrator- oder Benutzer-Accounts hat man keinen Zugriff mehr auf die eigenen Daten. The great thing is that many laptops today have Thunderbolt 3 ports that can connect to external GPU enclosures for some extra gaming oomph. If you choose a laptop with at least a quad-core 8th-gen Intel CPU and at least 8GB of RAM, then you can attach it to an external GPU and get performance that’s pretty darn close to a dedicated gaming laptop.   Wie viel Speicher im eigenen Rechner steckt, lässt sich ganz leicht herausfinden: Unter Windows 7 führt der Weg ins Startmenü, dort werden einem nach einem Rechtsklick auf "Computer" und "Eigenschaften" die Systeminformationen angezeigt. Unter Windows 10 findet sich die Übersicht in der Systemsteuerung unter "System" und "Info".

  
  

  Besser noch funktionieren Programme wie CPU-Z. Die kostenlose Software gibt nicht nur eine umfangreiche Übersicht zu installierter Hardware. Sie listet auch exakte Daten zum verwendeten Speicher auf. Das ist wichtig, damit identische Speicherriegel nachgekauft werden können. Welche Speicherbausteine ein Mainboard unterstützt, lässt sich auch im Handbuch nachlesen.

  
  

  Meist ist die Geschwindigkeit höher, wenn statt einem großen zwei kleinere Speicherriegel verbaut werden – also zum Beispiel zweimal 16 GB statt einmal 32 GB.   Laut dem Artikel beendet Microsoft den Service für Windows 7 am 14. Januar 2020. Danach bietet der Konzern bis Januar 2023 "Extended Security Updates" (ESU), also erweiterte Sicherheitsupdates. Im Klartext: Die Regelung betrifft nur Firmenkunden, die Windows 7 nutzen. Privatnutzer werden keine Updates erhalten. Zu den wichtigsten Shortcuts gehört "cmd + Leertaste", mit dem man die Spotlight-Suche aufruft. Diese findet nicht nur Datei- und Ordner-Namen, sondern durchsucht auch den Inhalt von Dateien.
