This laptop’s 13.3-inch FHD 1,920 x 1,080 non-touch display (the 4K touchscreen version will set you back by $300, and it’s a power hog) bursts with sumptuous colors, deep contrasts, and an incredible amount of detail. Finicky typists should be warned that the layout is still on the small side but with a typing experience this comfortable, who cares? Keeping up is the wonderfully responsive touchpad that boasts full Windows Precision Touchpad support.

Nothing has changed when it comes to screen quality, and that’s a good thing. The Surface Pro 7’s 12.3-inch (2,736 x 1,824 pixels) screen is as stunning as the Surface Go’s and Surface Book 2’s — one of the best screens you can find on a 2-in-1 system. Further, for a laptop of this size, the front-facing speakers can easily fill a room with music and provide adequate audio for watching movies.

Microsoft touts the Surface Pro 7 as a true laptop replacement, and it definitely has the processing power to back that up. Even this unit’s entry-level Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB RAM make it a multitasking beast, although we admit its G4-level Iris Plus graphics chipset doesn’t make it not much of a gaming machine.

Shockingly, the Surface Pro 7 did not inherit the best thing that has happened to the Surface Pro 6: Its stellar battery life. Although it was able to last a respectable 8.5 hours in our web browsing test, this is an hour shorter than its predecessor. You’ll definitely be able to squeeze out a full day of work with it. Just don’t expect to watch a Netflix movie or TV episode once you’re at home without reaching for the power cable.

When Microsoft unveiled the original Surface Book in 2015, we all let out a collective gasp and marveled at this machine from the future. Watching the display tear off to become a usable tablet with active pen support felt like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. Now on its second iteration, the company did not dare change the Surface Book’s design for one simple reason: It’s just that good.

The only other machine that compares to its rock-solid build construction is Apple’s MacBook, although that device’s design isn’t nearly as daring or innovative. The amount of electronic buzzing, fritzing, and whirring can be quite maddening, so keep that in mind in case you decide to buy this. Oh, it also doesn’t offer much in terms of connectivity, with a serious lack of a Thunderbolt 3 port. For a $1,000 laptop, that’s going to give some buyers pause.

As expected, you’re getting a typically superb Surface display with this device. The Surface Book 2 retains the same 3,000 x 2,000 (267 PPI) Panasonic panel, resulting in high contrasts, intense luminosity, and vivid colors. Of course, like all Surface machines, it has a 3:2 aspect ratio that’s great for productivity (but with some video letterboxing). The same goes for the detachable keyboard, which has only been changed ever so slightly, retaining its predecessor’s crisp, precise action that’s consistent across all of the keys. The only complaint we’ve got is that it is a bit noisy. The touchpad is even better, with a beautiful glass surface and flawless support of the Windows Precision Touchpad protocol.

This Surface Book 2 runs on an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD, offering a huge boost in both performance and efficiency, especially compared to the Surface Go and Surface Pro 7. What’s more, Microsoft has incorporated a power slider into Windows 10 that has a real impact on performance. Choosing between “Recommended,” “Better Performance,” and “Best Performance” allows the Surface Book 2 to effectively sip on power at varying degrees while remaining lightning-fast, which results in outstanding battery life. The 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 (it also comes in a smaller 13-inch model) is Microsoft’s first flagship portable PC that rocks an AMD Ryzen processor. This collaboration initially had us reeling with excitement, especially since AMD’s recent desktop processors and video cards have given Intel and Nvidia some serious competition. However, besides having incredible hardware and possibly the longest-lasting battery life we’ve seen yet on a laptop, its performance is lacking a bit.

"Natürlich ist Maschinenlernen nicht so simpel, dass man jede Menge Daten ins Smartphone lädt und es dann eine Lösung ausspuckt", sagt Vecchione. Die Grundinformationen, mit denen Computer gefüttert werden, um dann zu lernen, was aus den Daten zu schließen ist, müssten sehr präzise entwickelt werden. Die US-Regierung hat für Donnerstag ein Treffen mit führenden Technologie- und Industriekonzernen zur Zukunft der Künstlichen Intelligenz (KI) angekündigt. Bei dem eintägigen Treffen solle über Forschung, Innovation und einen Abbau von Hindernissen bei der Anwendung von KI gesprochen werden, hieß es am Dienstag in einer gemeinsamen Ankündigung von Industrie und Regierung.

Auf Wirtschaftsseite sollen Facebook, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, der SAP-Konkurrent Oracle, Intel, Ford, Boeing, Mastercard und Accenture teilnehmen. Die Regierung schickt Vertreter der Ministerien für Verteidigung, Handel, Landwirtschaft, Energie, Gesundheit und Verkehr.

Zahlreiche Staaten forcieren gegenwärtig ihre Bemühungen auf dem Gebiet der Künstlichen Intelligenz. Bundesforschungsministerin Anja Karliczek kündigte jüngst in einem Interview der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters an, die Entwicklung energisch vorantreiben zu wollen.

Union und SPD setzen Kommission ein

Deshalb will auch die große Koalition Chancen und Risiken des tiefgreifenden Wandels durch Künstliche Intelligenz umfassend untersuchen und diskutieren lassen. Dazu setzten die Spitzen der Bundestagsfraktionen von Union und SPD am Dienstag bei einer Klausurtagung im bayerischen Murnau eine Fachkommission ein.

"Das kann auch viele neuartige Arbeitsplätze bringen", sagte CSU-Landesgruppenchef Alexander Dobrindt. So zeigte der renommierte Robotikforscher Sami Haddadin von der Technischen Universität München bei der Klausur einen Prototypen, der zum Beispiel Mobiltelefone zusammenbauen kann. Haddadin hatte den mit 250.000 Euro dotierten Zukunftspreis 2017 erhalten, für einen Roboter, der feinfühlig auf Kontakt oder Berührung reagiert – und dadurch nicht nur in der Industrie einsetzbar wird, sondern auch in der Unterstützung älterer, kranker oder behinderter Menschen. Bisher war im direkten Kontakt mit Menschen die Gefahr der Verletzung durch Roboter groß, wenn sie nicht auf Berührung reagierten.

Martin Fischer vom Fachportal "Heise Online" empfiehlt Spielern, wegen des Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnisses derzeit eher auf Grafikkarten des Herstellers Nvidia zu schauen: "Wenn Sie in Full HD spielen, also mit normaler Fernsehauflösung, dann kommen Sie mit einer Geforce GTX 1050 TI oder einer GTX 1060 gut weiter. Die 1050 TI schafft es ganz ordentlich, Full HD anzuzeigen, vielleicht nicht mit kompletter Detailstufe, aber damit fährt man preis-leistungstechnisch sehr gut."

Wer bereits im Bereich der 4K-Auflösung unterwegs ist, muss entsprechend tiefer in den Geldbeutel greifen. "Wenn Sie jetzt mit voller Detailstufe die Spiele wiedergeben wollen, dann müssen Sie schon mit 600 Euro rechnen", sagt Fischer. Das wäre dann zum Beispiel die Geforce GTX 1080 oder 1080 TI. "Wenn Sie auf einige Details verzichten können, dann empfehle ich die GTX 1070, eine Alleskönnerkarte, die momentan aber auch noch um die 450 Euro kostet."

Programm misst Grad der Unterernährung

Das Unternehmen Kimetrica in Kenia hat ein Programm entwickelt, das den Grad von Unterernährung bei unter Fünfjährigen anhand von Fotos mithilfe computergesteuerter Gesichtserkennung ermitteln kann. "Es wurde schon erfolgreich mit Erwachsenen getestet, jetzt füttern wir das Modell mit Körpermessungen aus Kenia und Fotos, um es richtig zu trainieren", sagt die Kimetrica-Direktorin in Kenia, Anita Shah.

Die Computerprogramme könnten etwa auswerten, wie viele Leute elektrisches Licht haben, aus welchem Material Dächer sind, ob beim Haus Vieh gehalten wird.

Privatsphäre stets geschützt

Eine andere Überlegung ist, ob man aus der Mobiltelefonnutzung etwas über Armut oder Dürre ableiten kann. Zum Beispiel, wie oft Telefonkarten aufgeladen werden, ob mehr SMS geschickt oder Gespräche geführt werden, ob das von Dorf zu Dorf verschieden ist, wie lang Gespräche sind und wie groß das Netzwerk der Kontakte ist.

"Das Tolle an Künstlicher Intelligenz ist, dass man der Maschine nicht sagen muss, was genau sie analysieren soll", sagt Naroa Zurutuza, Datenwissenschaftlerin in Unicefs Innovationswerkstatt. Das Computerprogramm findet, wenn es mit genügend Daten gefüttert wird, von selbst Zusammenhänge heraus. Sie betont: es würden nur anonymisierte Daten verwendet, die Privatsphäre sei stets geschützt.

Es fehlen Ärzte und Spezialisten

"Innovationen mit ungeheurer Schubkraft" hat Maurizio Vecchione im Visier. Er leitet den von Microsoft-Gründer Bill Gates finanzierten "Global Goods Fund" bei der Innovationsfirma Intellectual Ventures. Er will Technologielösungen für die ärmsten Menschen der Welt finden. Schwerpunkt ist der medizinische Bereich.

"In Entwicklungsländern fehlen Ärzte und Spezialisten. Wir haben uns gefragt: Kann man Entscheidungshilfen entwickeln, die Spezialisten ersetzen können?" Seine Antwort: ja. Ein Computer könne mithilfe Künstlicher Intelligenz eingefütterte Daten verarbeiten und Diagnosen mindestens so präzise stellen wie ein Spezialist. Es gebe schon Ultraschallgeräte, die an ein Handy angeschlossen werden können. Mit Vitalwerten wie Puls, Temperatur und Fotos könne ein Programm selbst einem nur oberflächlich ausgebildeten Krankenpfleger in den meisten Fällen genügend Entscheidungshilfe für Diagnose und Behandlung bieten.

Martin Fischer vom Fachportal "Heise Online" hat vor allem einen Grund für die Preisspirale identifiziert: Kryptomining, also das Erzeugen von Kryptowährungen wie Ethereum oder Bitcoin, die zeitweise schon wertvoller als Gold waren. "Weil man diese wertvolle Kryptowährung mit eigener Hardware schürfen kann, haben sich viele Menschen dazu entschieden, genau das zu tun", erklärt Fischer. Alles, was man dazu braucht, sind Grafikkarten.

Vor allem in Ostasien haben sich Fischer zufolge industrieartige Anlagen gebildet, die Tausende Grafikkarten schürfen lassen. Schnell lernen die sogenannten Kryptofarmen, dass einige Modelle besser geeignet sind als andere. "Ideale Grafikkarten müssen eine gewisse Rechenleistung bieten, damit die Kryptoeinheiten relativ flott erzeugt werden können", sagt der Experte. "Gleichzeitig dürfen sie keine allzu hohe Leistungsaufnahme haben, weil das den Stromverbrauch hochtreibt, wenn viele Grafikkarten zusammengeschaltet werden."

Das führt dazu, dass Farmen mit ihren Großeinkäufen für Engpässe auf dem Markt sorgen und die Preise steigen können. "Das Problem dabei ist natürlich, dass es nur eine endliche Zahl von Grafikkarten und Chips gibt, die auf dem Markt sind", führt Fischer aus. "Die Hersteller AMD und Nvidia produzieren festgelegte Mengen, die vorher genau kalkuliert und an der Nachfrage orientiert werden." Die riesige Nachfrage habe dazu geführt, dass die Karten teurer wurden und ihre Verfügbarkeit deutlich abnahm.

"Nicht absehbar, dass es billiger wird"

Doch Kryptomining trägt nicht die alleinige Schuld an der Verteuerung. Wie Fischer erklärt, habe sich zudem einer der beiden größten Grafikkarten-Hersteller quasi selbst ein Bein gestellt: "AMD veröffentlichte im August 2017 eine neue Grafikkartenserie namens Radeon RX Vega. Diese Karten haben eine besondere Speichertechnik namens High Bandwith Memory (HBM), die die Speicherchips nicht mehr nebeneinander anordnet, sondern übereinander stapelt, was die Leistung der Karten erhört."

Das sei zwar eine spannende Technik, aber die Hersteller von HBM-Speicher konnten nicht so schnell produzieren, wie es für die Massenproduktion dieser AMD-Grafikkarten notwendig gewesen wäre, erklärt Fischer. "Insgesamt hatte das zur Folge, dass beispielsweise die Grafikkarte Radeon RX Vega 56 für einen Preis von 400 Euro angesetzt wurde." Tatsächlich liegt der Einstiegspreis nun aber bei 620 Euro – 55 Prozent mehr also. "Und da ist auch nicht absehbar, dass das deutlich billiger wird", so Fischer weiter.

Leistungsfähigste Modelle kaufen

Dass es zu einfach wäre, die Gründe für die Verteuerung der Grafikkarten allein aufs Kryptomining zu schieben, denkt auch Alan Priestly vom Marktforschungsunternehmen Gartner. Er verweist etwa auf die Weiterentwicklung von Computerspielen, die zunehmend höhere Anforderungen stellen: "Die Auflösungen steigen, die Bildschirme werden größer, die angezeigten Bilder pro Sekunde schießen in die Höhe. Um das ordentlich darzustellen, braucht man leistungsfähige Grafikkarten – und die sind nun mal teurer als die alten Modelle."

Trotzdem kann sich etwa Martin Fischer durchaus vorstellen, dass die Preise der Grafikkarten wieder sinken, wenn das Kryptomining an eine unweigerliche Grenze stößt: "Die Frage ist, wie es mit dem Ethereum-Kurs weitergeht. Bei Bitcoin war der Schürfenthusiasmus anfangs sehr hoch, und irgendwann hat die Leistung der Grafikkarten nicht mehr ausgereicht, damit man lohnend Bitcoins schürfen konnte, weil die Berechnungen immer komplexer werden mussten, um neue Einheiten zu finden. Das wird bei Ethereum ähnlich sein."

Microsoft may have created and refined the most popular operating system for computers a long time ago, but the software giant took its sweet time when creating its own PC hardware. Despite launching just a few years back, Microsoft’s Surface line of tablets and laptops ranks alongside Apple’s finest in terms of quality and performance. Right now, the Surface Go, Surface Pro 7, Surface Book 2, and Surface Laptop 3 are on sale at Amazon and Best Buy ahead of Memorial Day by up to $350 off. With varying specs, power, and price, there’s one Surface device that would perfectly suit your budget and needs, so go ahead and peruse.

The Microsoft Surface Go is the smallest and most affordable among the Microsoft Surface brethren. It may be tiny, but it’s definitely a force to be reckoned with. Combining ultra-portability, remarkable sturdiness, and the impressive Type Cover keyboard, it’s the ideal travel buddy if you don’t want to dive into the Surface Pro’s larger screen (and slightly higher price tag). Basically a 10-inch tablet/laptop hybrid, it runs with a full version of Windows 10 and has an Intel Pentium Gold processor in its heart. Since this is a relatively new device, it comes with a single USB-C port, something lacking in the older Surface Pro.

It sports an aluminum unibody that’s reminiscent of the original iPad, with rounded corners but minus the ultra-slim bezels. Despite this outdated design choice, it looks positively regal, especially since its 10-inch display is drop-dead gorgeous. With a resolution of 1,800 x 1,200 pixels, everything looks sharp (although not as sharp as the Surface Pro, of course). The Surface Go’s display is bright, maxing out at 420 nits in our tests. That’s better than most laptops, especially at this price, and it’s important since the Surface Go is likely to be used in brightly lit spaces, or even outdoors.

Although not bundled, you should definitely get the Signature Type Cover. This detachable keyboard doubles as a kickstand and offers a comfortable typing experience, far better than that of the MacBook Pro, which is more expensive. However, the keyboard layout looks a little cramped, a clear compromise of its ultra-portability, so mistyping can happen. But as with most keyboards, you’ll eventually get the hang of it. The touchpad also works smoothly and precisely.

Now a couple of drawbacks: Performance and battery life. The Surface Go’s Pentium 4415Y chip can handle most conventional applications like Microsoft Word or Photoshop Express just fine, but opening multiple browser tabs simultaneously made the device noticeably stutter. It also doesn’t have a lengthy battery life. During our video loop test, it was able to last just eight hours and an even shorter three hours in our more strenuous web browsing test. The Surface Pro 7 and Surface Book 2 fared far better.

While there haven’t been many significant changes in the numerous iterations of the Microsoft Surface Pro line, we still wholeheartedly recommend the Microsoft Surface Pro 7. Of course, you’re better off getting the Surface Pro X with its tangible refinements both in hardware and performance, but it’s one of the most expensive machines in the market. What you get with the Surface Pro 7 is what we’ve already come to expect: A gorgeous display, top-notch build quality, updated processor performance, and outstanding battery life. And finally, we get a USB Type-C port. This means fewer cables since the USB-C port can handle power delivery, video output, and data transfer at the same time.

As always, Microsoft made sure that the Surface Pro 7 looks terrific. Its aluminum chassis is sleek, and stylish, though the bezels still haven’t been cut down. Still, this is one stunning device.You probably already know that the detachable Type Cover keyboard remains a mandatory purchase, and normally it’s sold separately. Because as a tablet alone, the Surface Pro 7 doesn’t make much sense.

Don’t worry so much about the screen size. Less is generally more, saving you money and sometimes providing you with superior screen quality. A 13-inch screen might sound small but you soon get used to it and all laptops tend to have a way of plugging them into a separate screen if you decide you want a monitor further down the line. A smaller screen means less to carry around too when you’re back in class and need to transport your laptop around campus.

When picking out a productivity orientated laptop, consider what operating system you want. Nowadays, you have the choice of Windows, MacOS, or ChromeOS. The majority of people are used to Windows but that doesn’t mean it’s the fastest or the best, but if you’re keen to not have to relearn anything, it might still be the most tempting idea.

Alternatively, MacOS is a very efficient operating system because it’s designed for the hardware it’s tied into. However, Macs cost considerably more than a Windows or ChromeOS-based laptop, although they do tend to last longer. They’re great as stylish systems to show off with but few students can easily afford the high asking price. In terms of value for money, they’re not great.

For a great student laptop deal, most students will be fine with a Chromebook. A lot of the time, you’ll be writing documents in Google Docs and Chromebooks lend themselves perfectly to this method. You won’t be able to play games on them but as a solely work device, they’re inexpensive and easy to use. Simply log into your Google account and you can easily save files to the cloud. There’s the added convenience of not having to worry if you need to switch to a different system either — your files will always be there via your account details. You won’t have to scrimp on style either with the devices often looking super stylish and lightweight. Expect better battery life with most Chromebooks than a Windows-based system too.

Google announced on Thursday that starting in August, it will automatically block annoying resource-heavy ads on Google Chrome that drain your battery life.

The tech giant announced the changes in a blog post, saying that these updates will “limit the resources a display ad can use before the user interacts with the ad.” The automatic blocking will be experimented with over the next few months with a Chrome rollout at the end of August.

Google gave some examples of these types of display ads as those that mine cryptocurrency, are poorly programmed or are unoptimized for network usage.

The new ad blocking will work like this: When an ad reaches its loading limit on a website, the ad’s frame will navigate to an error page, so you won’t even be able to see the ad.

Google set the threshold to automatically block ads that use 4MB of network data or 15 seconds of central processing unit (CPU) usage in any 30-second period, or 60 seconds of total CPU usage.

Google seems to be in an ad-policing mood, since earlier this year, it announced that Chrome would start to block three of the most annoying types of video ads, also beginning in August.

The most intrusive ad types that will be blocked include ones that require you to wait five seconds before skipping them, ads that begin to play midway through a video, and ads that take up more than 20% of screen space.

1996 erschien eine neue Konsole, die den Giganten Ninentdo, Sega und Sony Konkurrenz machen sollte: die "Atmark" vom japanischen Spielwarenherrsteller Bandai. Das Gerät war ein Computer von Apple, der Apple Pippin. Apple produzierte das Gerät mit dem Gedanken, es an andere Anbieter lizensieren zu lassen. Es sollte als billiger Computer und gleichzeitig Spielekonsole die Kunden überzeugen. Allerdings erwies sich das Gerät als ziemlicher Flop. Sowohl als Konsole als auch Computer war Pippin zu leistungsschwach. Vielen Käufern war der Preis wohl auch zu hoch: knapp 600 Dollar. Zum Vergleich: Die Playstation kostet knapp 300 Dollar. Bandai verkaufte nur 42.000 Einheiten, ehe es die Produktion beendete, die Playstation verkaufte sich über 100 Millionen Mal.

Nach dem neuesten Windows-Funktionsupdate wird Nutzern die Überprüfung ihrer Datenschutzeinstellungen empfohlen. Denn durch das Update könnten einige Einstellungen automatisch zurückgesetzt worden sein – auch die von Kamera und Mikrofon. Seit Anfang Mai verteilt Microsoft in Wellen ein neues Funktionsupdate für Windows 10. Nach der Installation des Upgrades, das das Betriebssystem auf Version 1803 hebt, sollten Nutzer die Datenschutzeinstellungen genau prüfen. Sie lassen sich mit der Kombination "Windows" und "i"-Taste öffnen.

Die Preise von Grafikkarten kennen seit vielen Monaten nur noch eine Richtung: aufwärts. Dadurch werden auch leistungsfähige Heimcomputer teurer. Was steckt dahinter und wann lohnt sich der Kauf trotzdem?

Dass ein leistungsfähiger Desktop-PC nicht gerade günstig ist, überrascht nicht. Doch seit geraumer Zeit hat sich der Neukauf eines Rechners zu einem ganz besonders kostspieligen Unterfangen entwickelt. Der Grund: Die Preise für Grafikkarten befinden sich im Höhenflug und übersteigen bei vielen Modellen den ursprünglichen Kostenpunkt mittlerweile um das Zwei- bis Vierfache.

Das Gerät war ein großer Monitor, an dem Nutzer nur noch Rechner, Maus und Netzteil anschließen mussten. Apple setzte zudem auf die junge USB-Technologie und ein CD-Laufwerk. Viele Nutzer mussten darum Adapter kaufen, um ihre alten Geräte weiter verwenden zu können. Eine Besonderheit war auch das ansehnliche Design. Apple verkaufte das Gerät zudem in verschiedenen Farben. Allen in allem war der iMac ein Computer, den man sich gerne ins Wohnzimmer stellte. Startpreis: Etwa 1.300 Dollar.

"1.000 Songs in deiner Tasche" – so bewarb Apple den iPod. Der handgroße MP3-Player bestand aus einer fünf Gigabyte große Festplatte und konnte tatsächlich etwa 1.000 Lieder speichern. Apple veröffentlichte das Gerät 2001. Startpreis waren etwa 530 Euro. Anfangs konnten nur Mac-Nutzer Songs per iTunes-Software auf das Gerät schieben. Ein Jahr später war das Gerät auch mit Windows-Rechner kompatibel. Spätestens ab diesem Zeitpunkt war der Verkaufserfolg vom iPod nicht mehr zu stoppen. 2007 hatte Apple nach eigenen Angaben bereits 100 Millionen iPods abgesetzt. Apple veröffentlichte noch weitere Versionen des Gerät, wie den kleinen iPod Shuffe oder den iPod Touch.

Der iPod war nicht der erste MP3-Player seiner Art. Der "Archos Jukebox" 5000 erschien im Jahr 2000 und besaß ebenfalls eine fünf bis sechs Gigabyte große Festplatte. Der iPod wirkte aufgrund seines Designs aber nicht nur edler, als die vergleichsweise sperrige Archos Jukebox. Apples Gerät war aber leichter bedienbar und die Firewire-Technologie erlaubte es, Songs schneller auf den iPod zu laden.

Mit einem handgroßen Gerät namens "iPhone" revolutioniert Apple den Smartphone-Markt. 2007 präsentierte der damalige Apple-CEO Steve Jobs auf der "MacWorld" das handgroße Gerät. Die Revolution war der Multi-Touch-Bildschirm: Nutzer bedienten das Smartphone nur mit den Fingern. Andere Geräte besaßen eine Tastatur, die den gesamten unteren Bereich für sich beanspruchte. Das iPhone sah nicht nur ansehnlicher aus, sondern bot auch viel mehr Platz für das Display. Schon bald kopierte die Konkurrenz Apples Design-Vorlage. Tech-Konzern Samsung verlor erst vor Kurzem eine Patenklage von Apple und muss dem Unternehmen 539 Millionen Dollar zahlen.

Bei seiner Vorstellung 2010 war das iPad keine Weltneuheit. Lange vor dem iPad fand sich das Konzept bereits in Personal Digital Assistants (PDA). Bill Gates präsentierte 2001 den ersten modernen Tablet PC. Betriebssystem war Windows XP. Nutzer sollten das Gerät mit einem Stift bedienen, später war es auch mit den Fingern möglich.

Die Geräte wurden aber nie zum Verkaufsschlager. Erst das iPad änderte das. Nach eigenen Angaben verkaufte Apple das Gerät innerhalb von 28 Tagen eine Millionen Mal. Das knapp zehn Zoll große Modell gilt als das erste wirklich erfolgreiche Tablet. Im Vergleich zu anderen Tablets zu der Zeit war das iPad schmaler und wirkte desgintechnisch edler. Job erzählte später, dass zuerst das iPad entwickelt wurde und dann das iPhone. Doch das erste iPad erschient erst drei Jahre später.

Der Apple III erschien im Mai 1980 und war der erste Apple-Computer ohne die Mitarbeit von Steve Woziniak. Vielleicht war das ein Grund für den Flop. Vielleicht war es auch der hohe Preis von mindestens 4.000 Dollar. Oder vielleicht war es einfach die Unzuverlässigkeit: Das Gerät konnte leicht überhitzen. Als Folge rutschten seine Chips aus den Sockeln. Der Grund: es besaß keine aktiven Kühler, denn Steve Jobs fand die Geräte zu laut. Um den Apple III wieder zu reparieren, rieten Apple-Mitarbeiter zu einem einfachen Trick: Kunden sollten das Gerät etwas fünf Zentimeter über den Boden halten und dann fallen lassen. Durch den Aufprall rutschen die Chips wieder zurück an ihren Platz.

Die Regulierungsbehörde hat nach eigenen Angaben vier 0800-Nummern aus dem Verkehr gezogen und sperren lassen, die im Zusammenhang mit dieser Betrugsmasche genutzt wurden.Die Masche mit Anrufen vermeintlicher Microsoft-Techniker ist nicht neu. Immer wieder nutzen Betrüger die weite Verbreitung des Betriebssystems aus, um Daten auszuspähen oder Nutzer zu Zahlungen zu veranlassen. Nach Angaben von Microsoft enthalten offizielle Fehlermeldungen von Windows niemals Telefonnummern.

Mehr Reichweite, leichtere Erweiterung und offen für mehr Geräte: Mit dem neuen Betriebssystem Fritz OS 7 lassen sich AVM-Router und -Netzwerkgeräte leichter zu einem WLAN-Netz zusammenschalten.So sind zum Beispiel Funklöcher in der Wohnung leichter zu schließen. Geräte verbinden sich jeweils über den Zugangspunkt mit dem besten Empfang.

Sind mehrere Fritzboxen mit DECT-Telefonanlage im Netz geschaltet, können nun auch DECT-Telefone und -Smart-Home-Geräte wie Thermostate oder Steckdosen von allen Zugangspunkten des Netzwerks aus genutzt werden.

AVM öffnet die Fritzboxen außerdem für Geräte von anderen Herstellern, die nach dem DECT-ULE-Standard arbeiten und HAN-FUN-kompatibel sind. "HAN FUN" steht für "Home Area Network Functional". Als erste kompatible Geräte nennt AVM etwa Wandschalter, Tür- und Fensterkontakte oder Bewegungsmelder. Sie können auch zu Schaltgruppen zusammengefasst werden - dann lässt sich etwa das Licht schalten, wenn der Bewegungsmelder anspringt.

Das Asus Highend-Notebook ZenBook Pro 15 (UX580) wurde auf der Messe Computex in Taiwan vorgestellt. Es verfügt über ein 5,5 Zoll großes Bildschirm-Touchpad. Mit dem sogenannten "ScreenPad" sollen sich viele Anwendungen besser steuern lassen, erklärt der Hersteller. So lassen sich bestimmte Funktionen ausgewählter Apps wie Microsoft Word, Excel und Power Point auf das Display legen.

Das Notebook hat einen 15 Zoll großes UHD-Display (3840 x 2160 Pixel Auflösung), Nvidias Grafikchip GTX 1050 und 16 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher. Es wird ab Ende Juni ab 1.600 Euro erhältlich sein. Im vierten Quartal 2018 soll das ZenBook Pro 14 (UX480) folgen.

Leichte Alternative

Außerdem hat Asus ein neues ultraleichtes Notebook angekündigt: Das ZenBook S (UX391) mit 13-Zoll-Display, einer Akkulaufzeit von bis zu 14 Stunden und bis zu 16 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher wiegt nur ein Kilogramm. Der Verkauf soll Ende Juni beginnen, das Gerät kostet ab 1.100 Euro.

Neu ist außerdem ein Convertible: das 1,5 Kilo schwere VivoBook Flip (TP412) mit einem Intel-Core-Prozessor der achten Generation und bis zu 16 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher. Der Softwarekonzern Microsoft hat vor den schottischen Orkney-Inseln ein Datenzentrum im Meer versenkt. Das Unternehmen wolle mit diesem Versuchsprojekt die Entwicklung von energieautarken Unterwasser-Datenzentren vorantreiben, teilte Microsoft UK am Mittwoch mit. Zinc is also cheap and abundant, making the technology economical as well as eco-friendly.

But there are limitations when trying to make this tech rechargeable. Dendrite crystals can form during charging and short out the battery. Ways have been tested to replace the zinc such as “mechanically recharging” the battery by physically replacing the materials, an approach that has been tried in Singapore’s electric buses. Numerous other experiments have been attempted with lithium-air and metal-air batteries with varying degrees of energy density, power level, and cost. Over the past decade, Tesla has filed several patents related to charging lithium-air batteries, so their potential may exist far beyond your hearing aids.

A few years ago, University of Idaho chemistry professor Peter Allen started expressing his fascination with battery science on YouTube. Almost immediately he found that viewers really respond to battery material, which inspired him to build a rechargeable iron battery as an educational demonstration. That project has led to more than 100 demonstration videos explaining the steps, problems, and learnings of an educational battery project.

“I don’t want to pitch myself as a battery expert, per se,” acknowledges the professor, whose area of expertise is biological chemistry.

In doing the YouTube videos, he realized that there was a lot to be taught and learned by building a relatively cheap do-it-yourself battery.

“Parts of the iron battery technology have been around for 100 years, so I think a lot of folks who might come into this with a lot of foreign knowledge would just say, ‘Well, that’s that’s trodden ground — there’s nothing to be found there,’” he says. “But being a little naive, I walked into it and said, ‘Well, let’s try it, you can find something interesting anyway.’”

After two years, more than 30 battery variations, and a lot of help from undergraduate students, Allen has learned how to balance the liquid and solid materials to create an optimal amount of energy density but with low power.

“Then we got into this whole question of: ‘If you have a chemistry that works, but works slowly, how do you speed it up?’”

Even if the team solves that challenge, current technology dictates that the best applications for an iron battery will likely be a neighborhood microgrid energy storage unit or solar farm power capture, given the space required and the speed of energy sent from the unit.

Will Allen’s iron battery ever be commercially viable? He isn’t sure that he team’s current findings, which have been published in a scientific journal, will get them there.

Having reviewed numerous battery inventions, he realizes only a few of them will actually make it to market. In scientific research, he explains, there’s a “valley of death.”

“You have the basic research that comes up with something really cool,” he says. “There’s a question of whether it can be commercialized. And there’s no money to ask that question.” Researchers who find enough money to answer that initial question will then, if they’re lucky, find investors who want to refine and commercialize the idea. “But there’s a gap between the basic research and necessary refining to make a battery commercial.”

In 2019, venture capitalists sunk $1.7 billion into battery startups, with 1.4 billion of it going to lithium-ion related research. But flow batteries, zinc-air, liquid metal, and many other technologies also got written checks. While lithium-ion energy storage will likely dominate energy storage for at least another 10 years, many others already look like they’ll power their way out of the valley of death.

A flow battery is structured differently than most other ones: Instead of packing a bunch of reactive materials together in one unit (like normal batteries do), flow batteries store reactive liquids in separate containers and then pump them into the system to create energy. They’re also huge and designed for grid energy storage — not for electronics and things that can fit comfortably in the palm of your hand.

The original flow battery reportedly weighed 1,000 pounds and was invented in the late 19th century to power the cleverly named French airship “La France.” Interest in the modular energy storage has waxed and waned since then.

“I think what’s really driving an explosion and interest in flow batteries is not so much about making the next generation of batteries for phones or computers, but medium-to-large scale energy storage,” explains Timothy Cook, a professor of chemistry at the University of Buffalo. So, unless you’re building a steampunk cell phone, it’s unlikely you’re going to be carrying around any flow batteries activated with microscopic pumps. However, as more homes install solar power, the market for “personalized energy” storage will grow.

While making lithium-ion batteries more powerful means increasing the size of the battery, the design of the flow batteries makes it possible to increase energy by increasing the size of the liquid reservoirs. San Diego Power and Electric recently installed one that can power 1,000 homes.

“You don’t have to change any of the dimensions of the membrane [where the chemical reaction occurs], you just have to flow the larger volume of liquid through it for a longer time and you can extract that energy out,” explains Cook. “So it’s much much much easier to scale up or scale down or you can basically customize it to the installation.”

Flow batteries also have many more charging cycles than most batteries. The ability to replace the liquids or replace other modular parts means that the potential life of a battery is almost indefinite.

Even though companies currently sell industrial-size flow batteries, professor Cook doesn’t expect widespread acceptance for another five to 10 years. He even imagines a day when electric cars might use the tech. Cook describes a car pulling up to a “gas station,” discharging the spent electrolyte, and then refilling with a freshly charged one. Instead of waiting a half-hour for your car to reboot, the wheels can be spinning again in a matter of minutes. But, of course, that future is way down the road.

Making a battery out of paper has many advantages: It’s thin, flexible, and, if fabricated with the right materials, biodegradable. A team at Stanford University developed early paper batteries by coating thin sheets with a carbon and silver saturated ink. More recently, eco-heads have grown excited about the batteries being developed at Binghamton University. Professor Seokheun “Sean” Choi has made a few different incarnations of it, including one powered by spit — or more scientifically, human saliva — and another powered by bacteria. A recent incarnation of the biobattery developed by Choi and Professor Omowunmi Sadik uses poly (amic) acid and poly (pyromellitic dianhydride-p-phenylenediamine) to make the energy sources biodegradable.

“Our hybrid paper battery exhibited a much higher power-to-cost ratio than all previously reported paper-based microbial batteries,” Choi said when the innovation was announced. Although the commercial use of these eco-friendly paper batteries has been limited given their low electric output (one can power an LED light for about 20 minutes), researchers hope to see them used in electronics, wireless devices, medical applications like pacemakers, aircraft, and automobiles. Choi has written a paper about utilizing them as single-use power sources for point-of-care diagnostic tools in developing countries where batteries may not be readily available.

As such, few have adopted lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, making it tough to know how good their recycling rate is. Some researchers contend they are easier to break into component parts.Some experts are betting on lithium-sulfur energy storage to replace lithium-ion since the batteries tend to be lighter and more energy-dense. Sulfur is also plentiful and cheaper.

What’s the difference between how lithium-ion and lithium-sulfur batteries work? Professor Linda Nazar, whose lab at Canada’s University of Waterloo has been studying lithium-sulfur batteries for the past 10 years, uses a parking garage analogy to describe the differences. Whereas the charging and discharging of a lithium-ion battery is like driving cars in and out of a parking garage, the lithium-sulfur battery is “almost tearing down the entire parking garage structure and then rebuilding it when you recharge the cell.”

The chemical reaction is akin to what happens in a lead-acid battery where there is a complete structural and chemical transformation. These “conversion” batteries have their own advantages and challenges. “They have the advantage of being able to store more electrons,” says Nazar. On the other hand, sulfur has relatively low conductivity and the volume of the batteries changes after discharging. The team at the University of Waterloo lab is tweaking the components in the battery to increase the cycle life and optimize the battery’s reactions. If some of the battery’s challenges are solved, Nazar envisions them being used in aviation as well as drones. The Zephyr planes and UAVs, which have flown accomplished some of the long electric-powered flights, often rely on lithium-sulfur batteries.

As it turns out, the periodic table element that’s so bad for your heart is pretty good for batteries. Research in sodium-ion batteries started in the 1970s, around the same time as lithium-ion energy storage. The two elements are neighbors on the periodic table. Then lithium-ion took off and sodium-ion was considered a less energetic also-ran for the next three decades.

“It looks like the best thing around,” says Nazar, whose lab also works with sodium-based energy storage. “Sodium-ion batteries give one the possibility of working with earth-abundant elements — positive electrodes made out of things like iron, manganese, and titanium — elements that are much lower cost. But getting that chemistry to work well is a challenge because it’s just not the same as lithium.”

Nazar notes that some companies don’t think it’s worth investing in sodium-ion batteries because the cost of lithium-ion batteries is dropping all the time.“I think it is probably worth investing a lot of resources in sodium-ion batteries,” she says. “If there’s an a-ha moment that has sodium-ion batteries working really well, with high-energy density, that would be a huge step forward.”

Believe it or not, you can run a battery on sugar like a toddler hopped up on cake pops. Sony first published research about the reaction in which maltodextrin is oxidized to create energy in 2007. Although the material availability and eco-friendliness of sugar batteries is much higher than lithium-ion ones, the voltage created by their chemical reaction is notably lower. Vorsicht vor angeblichen Computerproblemen: Abzocker inszenieren eine Support-Hotline, die vermeintliche Fehlermeldungen beheben soll – und verschaffen sich dann Zugriff zu Ihrem PC. Die Bundesnetzagentur geht gegen eine neue Masche von Telefonabzocke vor. Diese besteht darin, dass auf Internetseiten Werbeanzeigen eingeblendet werden, die wie Fehlermeldungen des Computer aussehen. Nutzer sollen laut dem Inhalt der Anzeigen zur Lösung eines Problems bei einer vermeintlichen Telefon-Hotline von Microsoft anrufen. Wer dort anruft, landet allerdings bei Menschen, die versuchen, sich Zugriff zum Computer zu verschaffen oder nutzlose Software gegen eine Geldzahlung zu verkaufen. Die Bundesnetzagentur warnt ausdrücklich vor solchen Werbeanzeigen, die sich gern auch in eigenen Fenstern öffnen. Nutzer sollten sie unbedingt ignorieren.

Um der Nachfrage nach immer leistungsfähigeren und energieeffizienten Chips nachzukommen, geht Intel inzwischen Kooperationen mit Herstellern von Grafik-Chips (GPU) ein. Lange galten diese gegenüber den Computer-Chips (CPU) als Rechenknechte, an die einfache und wiederkehrende Arbeiten ausgelagert werden können. Doch ihre Bedeutung nimmt für moderne Simulationen und Künstliche Intelligenz stetig zu. Neben wachsender Konkurrenz aus ganz neuer Richtung könnte Intel – und damit der gesamten PC-Industrie – allerdings noch ganz andere Unbill in nächster Zukunft drohen: Vor rund einem Jahr wurden verheerende Lücken direkt im Design der Prozessoren von Intel, aber auch anderer Anbieter gefunden. Das potenzielle Einfallstor war Jahrzehnte unentdeckt geblieben. Es bietet mit "Spectre" und "Meltdown" eine völlig neue Klasse von Angriffsmöglichkeiten. Dabei wird ein Design-Merkmal der Chips ausgenutzt, das eigentlich die Rechenprozesse beschleunigen soll.

Sicherheitslücken in Intel-Prozessoren

Noch ist es offenbar zu keinen Angriffen gekommen, doch das kann sich jederzeit ändern. Die Hersteller arbeiten seither mit Hochdruck daran, mit Updates und Patches die Lücken zu stopfen – was bislang das Risiko eines Angriffs jedoch nur abgemildert hat. Und: Anfang Mai entdeckten Forscher gleich acht neue Sicherheitslücken nach ähnlichem Strickmuster in Intel-Prozessoren. Wie das IT-Fachmagazin "c't" berichtet, schätzt Intel selbst vier der "Spectre"-Lücken als hoch riskant ein.

Die Krise erinnert an die Zeit, als Intel schon einmal dicht am Abgrund stand: Mitte der 90er Jahre ein Fehler in der Fließkomma-Berechnung bei einem Pentium-Chip entdeckt wurde, der sich bereits im Handel befand. Zunächst hatte Intel versucht, den Fehler zu vertuschen, dann stillschweigend zu korrigieren.

Intel weigerte sich auch nach Protesten, die Chips auszutauschen – was in der Öffentlichkeit eine Welle der Empörung auslöste. Immerhin hatte Intel damals einen Chef, der mit einem Machtwort die Krise beenden konnte: Der langjährige CEO Andy Grove entschuldigte sich öffentlich in der Presse und startete ein umfangreiches Austauschprogramm. Legendär ist bis heute Grove's Leitspruch "Nur die Paranoiden überleben".

Unfortunately, most batteries wind up in landfills. Recycling rates for lithium-ion cells are horrendous: About 5% for the United States and European Union. Researchers are finding ways to make lithium-ion batteries more recyclable, but even if that happens, we still need to change the habits of people and corporations who don’t recycle batteries at all and dispose of them by tossing them in the trash.

The mining of it and cobalt (which is commonly used for a lithium-ion battery’s positive electrode) comes at a high environmental and human cost. Plus, cobalt’s price has risen notably in the past several years.

This all begs the question: Are there cheaper, more environmentally friendly batteries out there? Could we be using something better? What does the future hold?

A lot of people are researching the possibilities. Since the 1990s, more than 300,000 battery-related patents have been filed (more than 30,000 in 2017 alone). While a large percentage of these inventions are related to lithium-ion tech, plenty of work is being done on solid-state electrolyte, silicon-based anode, lithium-air, graphene and other options, some of which are eco-friendly, and others that are environmentally no better than lithium-ion but possibly more efficient.
