Nach einigen Tagen erweist sich das Smart Display als ganz praktischer Alltagsbegleiter. Die meisten Kommandos versteht es gut, so lange man sie einfach hält. Wetter abrufen, eine Karte von Budapest anzeigen, das Licht anschalten – alles kein Problem. Wer die Zeit investiert, kann mit dem Google Assistant auch zahlreiche Routinen anlegen und das Smart Display zur Zentrale im vernetzten Heim machen. Dann werden etwa kompatible Thermostate für die Heizung geschaltet – oder das Licht geht aus, wenn man die Wohnung verlässt.

Auch Videotelefonate sind über Google Duo möglich. Dazu lässt sich das Smart Display auch hochkant hinstellen, falls die Gegenseite ein Mobiltelefon nutzt. Wer nicht ständig im Blick der Kamera sein will, schiebt einfach den Sichtschutz vor. Auch einen mechanischen Schalter gibt es, der Lenovo zufolge die Mikrofone deaktivieren kann.

Und taugt das Smart Display nun als Kochhilfe? Die schnelle Antwort: Ja, mit Einschränkungen. Auf das Kommando "Hey Google, zeig mir ein Rezept für Lasagne." gibt es zahlreiche Ergebnisse. Auch andere Rezepte sind vorhanden. Zu speziell sollte es aber nicht sein. Während es einige Speisen in vielen Varianten und von vielen Seiten gibt, landet man bei anderen immer nur bei Chefkoch.de.

Schritt für Schritt kochen

Die Anleitungen selbst sind praktisch in einzelne Schritte mit Rezeptübersicht und Zutatenliste gehalten. Per Sprachkommando oder Fingertipp geht es zum nächsten Schritt. Wie erfolgreich das Kochen verläuft, hängt aber weniger vom Lenovo-Gerät selbst ab, als von der Qualität des Rezepts und dem Talent des jeweiligen Kochs. Jedenfalls sind die Rezepte meistens ansehnlich aufbereitet und gut gegliedert.

Es bleibt allerdings ein komisches Gefühl, etliche Male mit "nächster Schritt", "nächste Zutat" oder – weil die Pause zu lang war – mit "Hey Google, nächste Zutat" voran zu kommen. Nach einer gewissen Zeit nerven die Kommandos und man fängt unweigerlich an, den Touchscreen zu nutzen. Schmutzige Finger und Soßenspritzer bringen den digitalen Küchenhelfer übrigens nicht aus der Ruhe. Mit einem feuchten Lappen lassen sich alle Kochspuren gut beseitigen. Praktisch: Per Sprachkommando lassen sich mit dem Smart Display auch mehrere Timer stellen. So behält man den Überblick, was wann vom Herd oder aus dem Ofen muss.

Die digitale Harmonie in der Küche hat aber Grenzen: Der Umgang mit dem Google Assistant ist nach wie vor stellenweise frustrierend. Weicht man von den eng gefassten Befehlen ab, geht häufig etwas schief – und man muss den Befehl umständlich wiederholen oder neu formulieren. Sehr häufig werden auch Befehle falsch verstanden und es landen völlig unerwünschte Youtube-Videos auf dem Display – das meiste davon ist völliger Schrott. Nervig. Manchmal aktiviert sich das Smart Display auch unerwartet, während der Fernseher läuft und quatscht unpassend dazwischen. Die schöne neue Welt ist an manchen Stellen einfach noch nicht so weit.

Gelungener Gegenentwurf zu Echo-Produkten

Fazit: Soll der alte Küchenfernseher ohnehin zum Recycling, kann so ein Smart Display ein guter Ersatz sein. Videos, Radio, Streaming, einfache Internetrecherche – alles kein Problem. Wer gern nach Rezepten kocht, dem hilft das Gerät mit etwas Übung tatsächlich gut weiter. Wunder sollte aber niemand erwarten. Auch der Google Assistant macht aus untalentierten Löffelschwenkern keine Sterneköche.

Alles in allem ist das Smart Tablet ein gelungener Gegenentwurf zu Amazons Echo-Produkten mit Sprachassistentin Alexa. Man braucht für viele der angebotenen Funktionen allerdings kein eigenes Gerät. Etliche Funktionen des Google Assistant können auch vom Smartphone oder Tablet abgerufen werden – im Zubehörhandel gibt es dafür praktische Aufsteller. Hinzu kommen Stromkosten. Das Gerät läuft ständig und braucht pro Woche gut eine Kilowattstunde Strom.

Wenn sich Ihr Rechner nicht mehr normal starten lässt, sollten Sie ihn im abgesicherten Modus starten. Dazu müssen Sie beim Hochfahren des Rechners – noch ehe das Windows-Logo erscheint – eine bestimmte Tastenkombination drücken. Meist ist das Strg + F8. Alternativ reicht es auch, die Taste F8 zu drücken – am besten mehrmals hintereinander.

Darauf läuft Googles Sprachassistent Google Assistant. Im Gegensatz zur bekannten Version vom Android-Smartphone wird hier aber auf dem Bildschirm auch alles recht nett mit Bildern angezeigt und Nutzer können weitere Anfragen stellen – per Sprachbefehl oder über das Touchdisplay.

Also Packung auf, Stecker rein und einrichten. Das geht über die App Google Home ziemlich schnell und einfach. Damit das Smart Display gut funktioniert, muss man allerdings maximalen Zugriff auf alle Daten des Google-Kontos und dessen Aktivitäten geben. In einem nächsten Schritt lassen sich abonnierte Dienste verknüpfen. Für diesen Test sind es der Streamingdienst Spotify und die Steuerung vernetzter Philips-Hue-Leuchten. Nun noch den Toaster neben dem Herd durch das Display ersetzen. Fertig.

Der Alltagstest: "Hey Google, spiel Radio 1!" Klappt, kein Problem. Das Smart Display spielt über den Dienst TuneIn diverse Radiosender, der eingebaute Lautsprecher schlägt sich ordentlich. "Hey Google, lies mir die Nachrichten vor." Klappt auch, allerdings kommen meist die Nachrichten vom Morgen, was am Abend schon etwas veraltet ist. Was noch nicht klappt: Live-TV.

Snapchat and Uber installed successfully, but we couldn’t get past the login page. Another major downside is its middling battery life, a clear consequence of its ultra-thinness. In our web browsing test, it was only able to last five fours. It fared better in our video loop test, lasting nine and a half hours.

Despite the shortcomings, the Samsung Chromebook Pro is still worthy of recommendation for its solid build, beautiful display, and fast performance. You can now get it for $490 instead of $600. It doesn’t quite match the level of material quality of the more premium Samsung Chromebook Pro (see below), but overall we’ve got little to complain about in terms of build quality. It has a sturdy hinge design that rotates 360 degrees so you can use it as a tablet. Together with the built-in stylus, you can use the Chromebook Plus V2 as a digital sketchbook for drawing, designing, editing, and more.

The Chromebook Plus V2 stands out in terms of connectivity, where it is far better than the Chromebook 3 and on par with the Chromebook Pro. You get two USB-C ports supporting data, display, and charging, along with a USB-A 3.0 port for legacy devices and a Micro-SD slot for storage expansion. Of course, there’s the usual 2×2 MU-MIMO 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 radios, and a 3.5mm combo audio jack.

This Chromebook’s 12.2-inch IPS display has an unusual 16:10 aspect ratio, which makes it slightly taller than the usual 16:9 Chromebook display, although not as tall as the 3:2 ratio on the Chromebook Pro. This results in some minor letterboxing when watching videos, but it’s forgivable. For a relatively affordable notebook, its screen is outstanding. Colors are vibrant and contrasts are rich, and the only fault we can think of is it isn’t the brightest display around. Again, considering the price, this is pretty minor and shouldn’t dissuade anyone from buying it.

The touchscreen display is gorgeous and responsive, with a 2,400 x 1,600-pixel resolution. Colors are vivid, contrasts are deep, and everything looks sharply detailed. Unlike most of Samsung’s laptops, the Pro has a 3:2 display that’s typically seen on tablets. You get more vertical space for a better view of your work, and you’ll certainly appreciate viewing photos and webpages in portrait orientation. Unfortunately, because of its squarer shape, movies and TV shows tend to have thicker black bars above and below the picture.

We don’t believe at this moment that Thunderbolt can deliver the security that is really needed from the devices,” says the employee.

The authenticity of the video is questionable, but The Verge reports that it was able to verify that is genuine. The Microsoft employee speaking in the video is apparently based in the Netherlands and has worked with the company for 10 years. Microsoft has not commented on the video yet.

Microsoft’s Surface devices are one of the only premium laptops and 2-in-1s to not include Thunderbolt 3. Other manufacturers like HP, Dell, Apple, and Lenovo have opted to include the port, which allows for fast data transfer rates, charging of smartphones, and support for external GPUs.

Despite the benefits, there are indeed risks. In 2019, security researchers disclosed a vulnerability similar to the one that Microsoft discussed in the leaked video. Microsoft, though, has a new feature called Kernel DMA Protection, built into the system and Windows 10 which can prevent this at certain levels. Apple also has a T2 security chip in its MacBooks and Mac devices which secures Touch ID Data, and storage and enables secure boot.

Other than Thunderbolt 3, the leaked video also discusses why Microsoft doesn’t allow users to upgrade the RAM in Surface devices. This is also apparently a security threat, according to Microsoft.

The video explains that with the right tools, someone with bad intentions can access data and contents of a device by “freezing the memory with liquid nitrogen, get the memory out, and then put it in a specific reader to access all data stored in the memory.” Of course, this is not easily done, but it does explain why users can’t upgrade their Surface devices.

You can always rely on Samsung’s devices to be good pieces of hardware, and the Chromebook 3 is no exception. It’s slim, light, and evokes an Ultrabook’s aesthetic. It’s not exactly made of premium materials, but it certainly feels sturdy. Its 11.6-inch display offers solid performance. With a pixel resolution of 1,366 x 768 — which is higher than that of the Samsung Chromebook 5 — the colors onscreen nicely pop, although the blacks aren’t that deep, and it isn’t nearly as bright as we had hoped for. Still, it’s a pretty decent screen considering how affordable it is and is good for watching movies and TV shows in a dimly lit room.

At the back of this laptop, you’ll find most of its ports, which are a bit limited in number. There’s one USB 2.0 port, one USB 3.0, a full HDMI, and a SIM card slot (on the 3G version). On the left side, there’s an SD card slot and a headphone jack. The small number of ports isn’t really a drawback and something we’ve expected in a budget laptop. The Chromebook 3’s keyboard is pretty good, very reminiscent of a MacBook. For a laptop this thin, tactile feedback and travel are decent and keystroke is quite comfy. However, you won’t spot an Fn key here (since keys don’t actually have alternative functions), and instead of a Caps Lock key, there’s a Search key.

Sowohl das vom Juni an erhältliche Concept D5 (ab 1700 Euro) als auch das D7 und das D9 besitzen Displays mit Ultra-HD-Auflösung (3840 mal 2160 Pixel), die den Adobe-RGB-Farbraum zu 100 Prozent abdecken und für das Farbsystem Pantone zertifiziert sind.

Beim D9 ist das für die Stiftbedienung vorbereitete 17,3-Zoll-Display an einem aufstellbaren Scharnier völlig frei dreh- und verstellbar. Das 15,6 Zoll große D7 soll genug Leistung bieten, um Videos in 6K-Auflösung in Echtzeit zu bearbeiten und zu rendern. Preise und Verfügbarkeiten für das D7 und das D9 nannte Acer zunächst nicht.

Gaming-Laptop mit Cabrio-Trick

Zu den Neuvorstellungen gehören auch Business-Notebooks der Travelmate-P6-Serie in stoßfesten Gehäusen, die knapp 1,7 Zentimeter dick und rund 1,1 Kilogramm schwer sind (ab 1.200 Euro). Ebenfalls neu ist der Gaming-Laptop Predator Helios 700, bei dem sich die Tastatur mitsamt Handballenauflage und Touchpad etwas herausziehen lässt (ab 2.500 Euro). Durch diesen Design-Trick in Cabrio-Manier gelangt dem Hersteller zufolge mehr Frischluft zur Kühlung in das Gehäuse.

Betroffen sind unter anderem Nutzer, die Sophos Endpoint Security auf ihrem Rechner installiert haben. Sowohl Microsoft als auch Sophos haben die Probleme bestätigt. Als Reaktion hat Microsoft das Update für alle Geräte mit Sophos Endpoint Security gestoppt. In seinem Blog schreibt Sophos, das folgende Updates zu Problemen führen können:

Auch die Anti-Viren-Hersteller Avira und Avast melden Probleme mit dem Update. Laut den Firmen laufe Windows nach der Aktualisierung auf Systemen mit Anti-Viren-Software der Hersteller langsamer oder bleibt stehen.

Außerdem verfügen beide über eine Schnellladefunktion. Dadurch soll ein leerer Akku innerhalb von 60 Minuten wieder zu 80 Prozent aufgeladen sein, verspricht der Hersteller. Die Laufzeit gibt Medion jeweils mit bis zu fünf Stunden an. Das reicht nicht für einen ganzen Arbeitstag.

Beim Gewicht gibt es kaum Unterschiede: Das P17601 wiegt 2,3 Kilogramm. Das S17402 bringt 2,2 Kilo auf die Waage. In dieser Geräteklasse kann man das als durchaus sparsam bezeichnen, auch wenn sie zum Herumtragen auf Dauer zu schwer sind.

Wodurch rechtfertigt sich der höhere Preis?

Unterschiede gibt es natürlich in der Ausstattung. So wartet das teurere Modell der P-Serie mit einer hochwertigeren Grafikkarte (NVIDIA GeForce MX 150) und einem Intel Core-Prozessor der 8. Generation auf und genügt damit auch den höheren Ansprüche von Gamern und Video-Produzenten. Auf der 1,5 Terabyte (TB) großen Festplatte ist viel Platz für Videos, Bilder Musik und Spiele.

Mit einem Arbeitsspeicher von 8 GB ist das P17601 ausreichend, aber noch nicht üppig ausgestattet. Andererseits: Eine Rennmaschine mit 16 GB Arbeitsspeicher ist heutzutage nicht für unter 1.000 Euro zu haben. Insofern sind 8 GB durchaus angemessen und entspricht auch dem, was Experten für Windows 10 empfehlen.

Magerer Arbeitsspeicher

Wer hingegen mit dem 499 Euro teuren S17402 arbeiten will, dürfte schneller an seine Grenzen stoßen. Dieses Notebook ist nämlich nur mit 4 GB Arbeitsspeicher ausgestattet. Das reicht nur für die gängigen Office-Programme. Für Multitasking ist so ein Gerät weniger geeignet. Um die Maschine nicht zu überlasten, sollte man beim Surfen also nicht zu viele Browser-Fenster öffnen.

Die beliebten Medion-Notebooks halten mit aktuellen Entwicklungen auf dem Markt Schritt und versuchen, den wachsenden Ansprüchen der Kundschaft gerecht zu werden. So bieten etwa die modernen SSD-Festplatten einen Kaufanreiz. Bei dem S17402 muss der Kunde aber im Gegenzug Abstriche in Sachen Arbeitsspeicher machen.

Ansonsten konzentriert sich Medion aber vor allem auf Äußerlichkeiten. Die Vorteile der beiden neuesten Modelle liegen etwa in ihren großzügigen Displays, einem ansprechenden Design und einem vergleichsweise leichten Gewicht. Die Preise von 799 Euro, beziehungsweise 499 Euro scheinen jedoch im Anbetracht der Ausstattung etwas zu hoch gegriffen.

Kostenlose WLAN-Zugänge für Soldaten sind in den Bundeswehr-Unterkünften nach wie vor eine Ausnahme. Der Bund will das dringend ändern. Dabei geht es vor allem um die Rekrutierung des Nachwuchses.

Nur auf rund jedem dritten Bundeswehr-Grundstück, das mit Unterkünften ausgestattet ist, besteht ein kostenfreier WLAN-Zugang zur privaten Nutzung für Soldaten. Ende März waren 29 der bundesweit 256 Grundstücke, in denen Soldaten untergebracht sind, mit einem kostenlosen Internetzugang ausgestattet, wie das Verteidigungsministerium auf Anfrage der Deutschen Presse-Agentur mitteilte. Bis Ende 2020 sollten flächendeckend alle Gebäude, in denen Soldaten untergebracht sind, WLAN-Zugänge zur privaten Nutzung haben, sagte ein Sprecher des Verteidigungsministeriums. Dies sei eine der Maßnahmen aus der "Agenda Attraktivität" der Bundeswehr.

Derzeit laufen den Angaben zufolge Vorarbeiten für die Umsetzung in diesem und kommenden Jahr. Gründe für die längere Umsetzung seien, dass eine europaweite IT-Ausschreibung sowie Verhandlungen mit dem einzigen Bieter gescheitert seien. Erst im vergangenen August konnte demnach ein IT-Dienstleister für die Realisierung der Pläne gefunden werden.

Vielleicht bewahrheitet sich bei Ihnen ja die Annahme, dass der größte Fehler vor dem Bildschirm sitzt. Ich von meinem Standpunkt aus kann jedenfalls nur sagen, dass W10 absolut stabil und flüssig läuft. Updates werden ohne Probleme eingespielt und auch sonst harmoniert das System perfekt mit allen externen Geräten wie Festplatten, Smartphone etc.

Windows 10 ist extrem Speicherhungrig da kommen andere Betriebssysteme wie Linux wunderbar damit klar das diese weniger Swapspeicher brauchen als Windowssysteme. Windwos braucht deshalb soviel weil immer wieder Anwendungen die zwar gestartet wurden aber momentan nicht vorrang beim User haben werden auf die Festplatte ausgelagert. Aber das hin- und herschaufeln der Daten braucht auch seine Zeit und geht irgend wann an die Substanz der Festplatte.bzw. des Speichermediums SSD. Die haben alle nicht das ewige Leben. Das ist Windows Hausgemachte obsolenz der Festplatten bzw. SSD Medien. Je weniger Schreib und Lesezyklen durchgeführt werden müssen um so länger bleibt das Speichermedium in takt. Das gilt übrigens auch für SD-Speichermedien besonders wenn man auf diesen Wetterdaten und änliches logt. Da sind schnell 200. - 800.000 Schreib/Lesezyklen erreicht. Das Ende des Speichemediums ist da.

Das ist peinlich. Überhaupt ist die Art und Weise, wie Windows Laufwerke zuordnet ein Ärgernis, dass doch gar nicht mehr in die Zeit passt. Windows 10-Nutzer müssen künftig doch nicht auf das beliebte Malprogramm "MS Paint" verzichten. Wie das Tech-Magazin "The Verge" berichtet, soll die Kult-Software auch in der nächsten Windows 10-Version enthalten sein. Zumindest bis auf weiteres, wie Microsoft-Programmierer Brandon LeBlanc auf Twitter mitteilte.

Ursprünglich sollte das Programm unter kommenden Windows 10-Versionen durch das modernere "Paint 3D" abgelöst werden. Microsoft bereitet die Umstellung bereits seit Monaten vor. Nachdem jedoch zahlreiche Nutzer ihr Bedauern über das drohende Ende von "MS Paint" ausgedrückte hatten, ruderte der Software-Konzern zurück und versprach, die Kult-Software weiterhin kostenlos in seinem Microsoft Store zum Download anzubieten.

Der Umweg über den App Store bleibt den Fans aber nun doch erspart: "MS Paint" wird auch weiterhin als ein vorinstalliertes Standardprogramm unter Windows 10 ausgeliefert – parallel zu "Paint 3D". Unklar ist, wie lange der Konzern noch an den zwei Grafikprogrammen festhalten will, obwohl sie ähnliche Funktionen bieten. Auch woher der erneute Sinneswandel kommt, verriet Microsoft nicht.

Fans der Software begrüßten die Entscheidung jedenfalls. Viele verbinden Kindheitserinnerungen mit der mehr als 30 Jahre alten Software, die früher "Paintbrush" hieß. Manch einer nutzt sie heute noch, um Screenshots zwischenzuspeichern oder zu bearbeiten und um Bilddateien umzuwandeln.

Portable chargers: Maybe you have a portable charger with an old USB connection, but a phone that only has a USB-C connection (which is not compatible with older USB ports). You can link the charger to a laptop that has both types of ports, and use it to power up your phone in a roundabout way. Do not try to use your laptop Type C charger to charge your phone directly, not yet. The voltage requirements are too different for most devices currently available, and multi-device chargers are still a nascent part of the market.

Power stations: Stations like the DeX Station from Samsung allow you to connect screens with Samsung phones for greater usability and switching between tasks. The DeX Station includes USB-C connections for charging the latest Samsung phones, along with other ports for connecting various accessories. This “something for everything” approach is popular right now as USB connections enter a complicated phase.

There’s a variant of USB-C that’s a lot more powerful — Thunderbolt 3. Choose a laptop with at least one Thunderbolt 3-enabled USB-C port and you can connect multiple 4K monitors at 60Hz and greatly increase your laptop’s gaming performance via an external GPU enclosure.

Thunderbolt 3 allows for a number of charging arrangements: It can “chain” up to six different devices together and easily charge while transmitting data — at higher speeds than USB-C alone, up to 100W.

Since Thunderbolt 3 uses the same connection as USB-C, manufacturers are quick to label laptop ports if they also have Thunderbolt 3 technology: You can usually tell just by reading their descriptions. However, Thunderbolt 3 connections only work if you use the right cables, so make sure you have Thunderbolt 3 cables if that’s what your ports are.

The future of USB-C charging

There’s a brand-new version of USB on its way that will be even faster and provide even more standardization. Dubbed USB4, we can expect laptops with the new ports to start arriving in 2020 or so. USB4 adds another layer of complexity to the whole USB protocol issue, but here are important points to note:

As if there wasn’t enough headphones news right now, Microsoft may be close to launching its second-generation Surface Headphones.

Thanks to a Bluetooth SIG listing that was first caught by 911 Mobiles, a new version of Microsoft’s over-ear headphones is in the works. The Surface Headphones 2 will have 20 hours of battery life, Bluetooth 5.0 technology built-in, and support for audio codecs like aptX.

There aren’t a ton of other details available in the listing. The design description of the product notes that dial buttons will be able to choose between three different noise cancellation settings and voice assistant integration with the tap of a dial. Beyond that, we don’t know a lot about these new headphones.

The information we currently have, however, is a sign that Microsoft is moving in the right direction. In our review of the original Microsoft Surface Headphones, we had issues with poor battery life from the cans, as well as a lack of aptX support. We found them to be easy to use, but their features left a lot to be desired.

It seems like Microsoft may have listened, at least to an extent. An estimated 20 hours of battery life is better, though it doesn’t compete with the Sony WH-1000XM3 in terms of playback time. We also found the accompanying app to be incredibly flawed, so here’s hoping Microsoft reworked that aspect of the ensemble, too.

We don’t know the price of the second edition Surface Headphones, or when they’ll be set to launch. As soon as we find out, we’ll be sure to update you.

A new leak has provided some insight into why Microsoft’s Surface lineup doesn’t feature Thunderbolt 3 ports. The reasoning comes down to security concerns, according to an internal Surface engineering webinar posted by Walking Cat on Twitter.

Per the employee speaking in the video, Microsoft’s Surface lineup doesn’t feature Intel’s Thunderbolt technology because “that’s indirect memory access.” The vulnerability to a direct memory access attack has always been present with Thunderbolt technology, but Microsoft remains the only manufacturer refusing to use it.

The arrival of USB-C has been a game-changer for many electronics. You can use the connection to charge devices and transfer media, and it’s conveniently reversible. Modern laptops no longer need a big power brick — you can just use USB-C.

But there are some precautions you should take when charging over USB-C. Here’s everything you need to know.

You have probably already used USB connections to charge smaller devices either from your computer or from an outlet. That works well because past USB connections had enough wattage to successfully power up those smaller batteries. However, prior versions of USB could handle a limited amount of power, which is why laptop chargers have typically retained their larger, bulkier cables.

USB-C changed that. This type of connection now provides enough power to juice up most laptops (particularly the Type-C 3.0 version). That’s why laptop charging is a new topic of conversation for USB connections, especially now that more laptops are entering the market with USB-C charging compatibility. Eventually, you can expect the majority of laptop chargers to use the USB-C option, though some, like Microsoft, are still taking their time.

So, how do you know if your current laptop has a USB-C port that also works with charging? You could always look it up, but the easiest way is to simply examine your charger. You can identify a Type-C charger by its unique features. USB-C’s connector is small and rounded, significantly different from the old USB version. It also works no matter which way you connect it to the right port, so there’s no need to flip it the right way around. If your charger uses this connection and plugs into your USB-C port, you have a winner!

USB-C chargers are turning up on many different devices, so it’s not strictly relegated to laptops. Newer phones use USB-C charging, car chargers may come with USB-C ports, and portable charges (discussed more below) can have USB-C options. But laptops tend to have USB-C more frequently than other devices, at least for now.

USB-C is a universal charging standard. That means that, technically, it doesn’t matter what USB-C charger you use, it should be able to power up a laptop with a USB-C charging port and power bank. In the real world, this is taking a while to come true. Today the majority of laptop USB-C chargers are interchangeable, but it’s not guaranteed.

Some laptops come with USB-C ports that don’t charge. This is most common on laptops that come with their own, proprietary charger — although a number of laptops can be charged either way, only the propriety charger tends to power up a laptop more quickly. The Samsung Notebook 9 is an example of that, as is the 2019 HP Envy 13. If you’re not sure exactly how to charge your laptop, check the manufacturer’s website, or look up a review of the system here at Digital Trends.

Laptops that rely entirely on USB-C, meanwhile, might not charge with just any charger. PCWorld, in its testing, found that HP’s Spectre x2 wouldn’t charge with any USB-C charger besides its own. HP said that that was intentional because a bad charger could damage the device, or cause it to malfunction. Other devices, like the Apple MacBook Pro, don’t have such tight restrictions — a new USB-C authentication system could help with this issue in the near future.

While we haven’t personally heard of any damage from using a USB-C charger other than the one that came with your laptop, there’s always a slim risk when plugging a laptop into an unknown power source. Faulty cables can also be a problem. Microsoft acknowledges this by saying that you can charge a Surface with a USB-C port, but it’s highly recommended that you use the Surface charger that came with the laptop because a USB-C charger would end up being very slow due to how power is metered within the device. In short, it’s a good idea to buy cables and chargers from reputable sources and think twice about using that cable you found laying on the ground in a conference room.

You will also want to watch your USB-C power mode, which you can find in your laptop settings, usually in the power/battery section. Here, you may find that you can switch Type-C’s output, choosing whether to receive power or send power. If your USB-C laptop charger isn’t working when by all rights it should be, check your settings to make sure it is set to receive power.

Charge-through: Let’s say you have a portable screen for presentations, and a laptop, both with USB-C connections that include the ability to send or receive power. Sure, you could just use that connection to send your presentation to the screen. But with the right setup, you can also use that connection to charge your laptop battery. The screen gets its power from a traditional outlet and then sends a charge out to your laptop. That means your laptop would never run out of juice in the middle of a presentation.

Für Nutzer mit wenig Speicherplatz gibt es allerdings eine Hürde: Um das Update installieren zu können, benötigen Sie mindestens 32 Gigabyte (GB) Platz auf der Festplatte. Gerade für Besitzer von Einsteiger-Laptops wird diese Anforderung von Microsoft zum Problem.

Wenn nicht ausreichend Speicherplatz vorhanden ist, kann das Update nicht installiert werden. Zwar dürften die allermeisten Nutzer in Zeiten von riesigen Terabyte-Festplatten keine Sorgen vor zu wenig Platz haben. Bei vielen günstigen Notebook kommt allerdings ein kleiner SSD-Speicher zum Einsatz, der schnell voll sein kann.In früheren Versionen gab sich Windows mit deutlich weniger Speicherplatz zufrieden. Für die 32-bit-Variante vom letzten "Fall Creators Update" waren nur 16 GB notwendig. Damit haben sich die Anforderungen verdoppelt.

Neben dem erhöhten Speicherplatz aktualisiert Microsoft auch die Anforderungen an den Hauptprozessor (CPU) im Computer. Anders als beim Speicher gibt es hier allerdings kaum nennenswerte Änderungen im Vergleich zum Vorgänger: Beide Windows-Versionen unterstützen Intel-CPUs bis zur neunten und AMD-CPUs bis zur siebten Generation. Sogar Experten waren deshalb irritiert. Inzwischen ist aber klar, was das Problem verursacht.

Wer derzeit vorab das Mai-2019-Update für Windows 10 (Version 1903) laden möchte, könnte Probleme bekommen. Denn Windows blockt die Aktualisierung, wenn ein USB-Stick oder eine SD-Karte am Rechner eingesteckt ist. Das berichtet das Fachmagazin "heise online."

Den Computer-Experten zufolge erhalten Nutzer eine Fehlermeldung, dass der PC kein "Upgrade auf Windows 10" durchführen kann. Als Grund wird die Hardware des Rechners aufgeführt, "die für diese Windows 10 Version noch nicht bereit ist". Doch was genau soll das heißen?

Inzwischen hat Microsoft eine Erklärung nachgeliefert: Auf seiner Website schildert der Konzern das Problem. Demnach kann es zu einer "unangemessenen Laufwerkszuordnung" kommen, wenn während der Installation des Mai-2019-Updates ein USB-Stick oder eine SD-Karte angeschlossen ist. Das liege daran, dass der Laufwerksbuchstabe des externen Datenträgers sich nach dem Update ändern kann. Lautet der Laufwerksbuchstabe für einen angeschlossenen USB-Stick vor der Installation beispielsweise "G", kann er nach dem Update "H" lauten.

Ende Mai 2019 kommt voraussichtlich das nächste Update für Windows 10. Neben einem neuen "Hellen Modus" wird es hauptsächlich kleinere Änderungen geben (mehr dazu hier).

Jetzt ist eine weitere Änderung bekannt geworden: Microsoft überarbeitet auch die Sicherheitseinstellungen und streicht das Verfallsdatum für Passwörter in seinen Empfehlungen für Administratoren. Bisher riet Microsoft in seinen sogenannten "Security Baselines", dass Nutzer nach einem festgelegten Zeitraum Passwörter ändern sollen. Bisher wurde geraten, dass Nutzer spätestens alle 60 Tage ihr Kennwort erneuern. Vor allem bei Rechnern in Unternehmen wurde diese Richtlinie umgesetzt.

Wie Microsoft selbst erwähnt, bringt die Pflicht zum Ändern des Passworts keine Vorteile. Das schreibt Aaron Margosis, Sicherheitsexperte bei Microsoft in einem Blog-Post: "Ein Verfallsdatum für Passwörter ist eine alte und überholte Maßnahme von sehr geringem Wert."Er fügt hinzu, dass Passwort-Sicherheit insgesamt ein Problem ist, weil Menschen häufig Begriffe und Kombinationen wählen, die zu einfach sind. An dieser Methode ändere sich auch mit dem Verfallsdatum nichts.

Die Mindestlänge bleibt bestehen

Mehr noch: Mit dem Zwang zur Änderung würden die meisten Nutzer meist vorhersehbare sehr kleine Änderungen vornehmen und im schlimmsten Fall das neue Passwort vergessen. Die Richtlinie bietet also wenig Schutz, verursacht aber viel Aufwand bei Nutzern.

Die minimale Länge und Anforderungen an Komplexität bleiben nach dem Mai-Update aber immer noch erhalten. Die Funktion wird dabei allerdings nicht völlig entfernt: Unternehmen können für die PCs in ihrer Organisation auch weiterhin eine Pflicht zum Ändern des Passworts durchsetzen.

Bei der Installation von Updates oder Software stehen Windows-Nutzer immer wieder vor der gleichen Frage: Welche Version ist die richtige für mich: 64- oder 32-Bit? Inzwischen läuft auf den meisten modernen Rechnern eine 64-Bit-Version des Betriebssystems, das der aktuellen Hardware eher gewachsen ist und ein schnelleres Arbeiten ermöglicht. Trotzdem wird weiterhin noch eine 32-Bit-Version von Windows angeboten.

Für viele Nutzer ist das ziemlich verwirrend. Sie müssen bei jedem Windows-Update aufs Neue entscheiden, welche Installationsdatei für ihren Rechner geeignet ist. Um herauszufinden, welche Systemarchitektur Ihr Rechner aktuell nutzt, gehen Sie wie folgt vor.

Um ein reibungsloses Upgrade zu garantieren, sollten Sie vorher sichergehen, dass Windows auf dem neuesten Stand ist. Wurde das letzte November-Update bereits installiert? Falls nicht, sollte das zuerst nachgeholt werden. Um die Versionsnummer herauszufinden, drücken Sie die Windows-Taste, geben "winver" ein und drücken Enter. In dem aufpoppenden Fenster sollte am besten die Versionsnummer 1903 oder 1909 stehen.

4. Externe Speichergeräte abstecken und Anti-Viren-Programm deinstallieren

Ende April 2019 berichtete Microsoft, dass Windows die Aktualisierung auf die neue Windows-10-Version blocken könnte, wenn ein externer Datenträger angesteckt ist – wie ein USB-Stick oder eine SD-Karte. Das Fachmagazin "Chip.de" rät darum, externe Datenträger vor einem Update abzustecken. Auch Anti-Viren-Software von Drittanbietern kann laut "Chip.de" oft Probleme verursachen. Nutzer sollten darum vor dem Mai-Update ihren Virenschutz deinstallieren und nach dem Update wieder installieren.

5. Die Alternative: Neuinstallation

Versierte Nutzer können das Upgrade zum Anlass nehmen, um ihren Computer völlig neu aufzusetzen. Eine Neuinstallation ("Clean Install") hat den Vorteil, dass man ohne Ballast zur neuen Version wechselt. So bleibt Speicherplatz frei und das Risiko von Konflikten durch veraltete Treibersoftware wird verringert.

Für einen "Clean-Install" brauchen Sie das "Media Creation Tool", das Sie von der Microsoft-Seite herunterladen können. Damit lässt sich eine ISO-Datei von Windows 10 erstellen, die anschließend auf einem bootfähigen USB-Stick oder einem anderen Datenträger abspeichert werden kann. Damit wird der PC neu aufgesetzt. So kommen Nutzer schneller an das Update

Wer sich für das "Windows Insider"-Programm angemeldet hat, bekommt Updates früher zugespielt als alle anderen. In den "Update und Sicherheit"-Einstellungen kann man sich dafür registrieren. In diesem Artikel haben wir eine Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitung dazu erstellt.

Man sollte allerdings im Hinterkopf behalten, dass man damit auch alle zukünftigen Updates früher bekommt. Microsoft nutzt das Programm quasi als "Versuchslabor", um seine Updates vor dem offiziellen Release zu testen. Wer sich daran beteiligt, riskiert also auch, fehlerhafte Updates zu bekommen. Außerdem fordert Microsoft immer wieder Feedback ein.

Umgekehrt bedeutet das: Je länger jemand auf das Update wartet, desto sicherer kann er sich sein, dass es ausführlich getestet wurde und keine Probleme macht.Microsoft wirbt dafür, dass Nutzer Office 365 anstelle der Offline-Version nutzen. Doch Experten haben festgestellt: Das Programm verstößt gegen EU-Datenschutzregeln und hat Sicherheitsmängel.

Wenn es nach Microsoft geht, sollten alle Nutzer Office 365 verwenden. Laut dem Konzern ist die cloudbasierte Office-Lösung dem Standardprogramm überlegen. Jetzt berichten Computerexperten des Fachmagazins "iX" von Datenschutzmängeln in Microsofts cloudbasierten Office-Programm. Und auch aktuelle Sicherheitsstandards scheint Microsoft zu ignorieren.Für ihre Untersuchung installierten die Experten Office 365 in einen sogenannten Linux-QEMU-Käfig und lasen mithilfe eines Proxys den Datenverkehr aus. Unter anderem stellten die Experten fest, dass Microsoft Passwörter im Klartext übermittelt. Für gewöhnlich werden Passwörter als sogenanntes Salted Hash übertragen. Dabei wird ein Passwort in eine zufällige Zeichenfolge umgewandelt, durch die das ursprüngliche Kennwort nicht mehr auslesbar ist.

Auch schickt Office 365 nach der Installation mehrere Megabyte Telemetriedaten an Microsoft. Dabei handelt es sich beispielsweise um Informationen zu aufgerufenen Programmen oder geöffneten Dokumenten auf dem Rechner. Laut "iX" holt sich das Programm aber erst nach Ende der Anmeldung die Erlaubnis dafür, solche Daten abgreifen zu dürfen.

Es gibt im Grunde zwei Möglichkeiten: Entweder man kopiert manuell alle wichtigen Dateien auf einen Datenträger. Oder man nutzt das "Sichern und Wiederherstellen"-Tool in den Systemeinstellungen, um ein Systemabbild zu erstellen. Das Tool bietet auch die Option, nur bestimmte Ordner (zum Beispiel nur die "Eigene Dateien"-Bibliotheken) zu exportieren. Das spart Zeit und Speicherplatz.

2. Version überprüfen und wichtige Updates nachholen

Um ein reibungsloses Upgrade zu garantieren, sollte man vorher sicher gehen, dass Windows auf dem neuesten Stand ist. Wurde das letzte Herbst Creators Update bereits installiert? Falls nicht, muss das zuerst nachgeholt werden. Um die Versionsnummer herauszufinden, drücken Sie die Windows-Taste, geben "winver" ein und drücken Enter. In dem aufpoppenden Fenster sollte die Versionsnummer 1709 stehen.

Stellen Sie sicher, dass auch alle wichtigen Sicherheits-Updates eingespielt wurden und holen Sie dies gegebenenfalls nach. Dazu nutzen Sie wie gewohnt die "nach Updates suchen"-Funktion.
Läuft alles nach Plan, werden durch das Upgrade sämtliche Einstellungen, Software und Treiber übernommen und sind auch unter dem neuen Windows sofort wieder einsatzbereit. So schleppt man aber auch viele Altlasten von Version zu Version. Das nimmt unnötig Speicherplatz in Anspruch und kann auch zu Problemen führen. Das "Speicherplatz freigeben"-Tool unter Windows hilft dabei, nicht mehr benötigte Dateileichen zu entfernen.

Während der Installation des Updates legt Windows einen Ordner namens "Windows.old" an. Darin befindet sich ein Systemabbild der Vorgängerversion. Das dient der Sicherheit, denn sollte etwas schief gehen, lässt sich das System wieder in den vorherigen Zustand zurücksetzen. In den Einstellungen findet sich dann unter dem Punkt "Wiederherstellung" der Befehl "Zur vorherigen Version von Windows 10 zurückkehren". Der Nachteil: Der Ordner belegt reichlich Speicherplatz.

Wenn man also mit dem neuen Windows zufrieden ist und keine Probleme mit Software und Hardware hat, möchte man sich des Ordners vielleicht entledigen. Aber Vorsicht: Es gibt keinen Weg zurück. Ein Downgrade ist nach dem Entfernen von Windows.old nicht mehr möglich.Aus gutem Grund lässt sich der Windows.old-Ordner deshalb nicht wie normale Dateien löschen. Stattdessen muss man die "Datenträgerbereinigung" aufrufen und dort "Systemdateien bereinigen" für das betreffende Laufwerk auswählen. Nach einem Suchlauf wird neben anderen Optionen auch "vorherige Windows-Installationen" zur Löschung angeboten. Dadurch wird man das datenschwere Vermächtnis los.

Nach dem Herbst-Update im Oktober 2018 klagten manche Nutzer über Datenverlust. Microsoft musste die Version 1809 zurückziehen und startete den allgemeinen Rollout erst im Januar 2019.

Im Oktober 2017 injizierte sich Traywick öffentlich eine ungetestete Herpes-Infektion. Die Infektion wurde auch Tristan Roberts gegeben, der auch für Ascendance Biomedical arbeitete und HIV hat. Microsoft veröffentlicht am Montag ein großes Windows 10-Update. Zu den Neuheiten zählt unter anderem eine Timeline, die alle zuletzt bearbeiteten Dokumente auflistet. Das Frühjahrs-Update auf Version 1803 soll insgesamt für bessere Bedienbarkeit und mehr Sicherheit sorgen.

Das Update wird ab dem 8. Mai ausgerollt und in den nächsten Wochen automatisch installiert. Für Microsoft hat es sich bewährt, die Rechner nacheinander "in Wellen" zu bedienen. So wird die Belastung auf die Microsoft-Server etwas verteilt. Es werden also nicht alle Rechner gleichzeitig bedacht und manche Nutzer müssen sich etwas länger gedulden.

Erfahrungsgemäß kann es auch schon mal mehrere Monate dauern, bis alle versorgt sind. Wer nicht so lange warten möchte, kann sich das Update auch per Direkt-Download besorgen oder in den Systemeinstellungen eine Aktualisierung erzwingen. Gerade in den Anfangstagen dürfte der Andrang aber groß sein. Die Größe der kompletten ISO-Datei beträgt laut "PC Welt" 3,8 Gigabyte in der 64-Bit-Version. Der Download kann als also auch bei einer schnellen Leitung durchaus etwas länger dauern.

In Europa wird das neue Windows sowieso aufgrund der Zeitverschiebung vermutlich erst in den Abendstunden verfügbar sein. Das Programm wird dann auf der offiziellen Windows 10 Download-Seite von Microsoft zum Download angeboten. Dazu bietet Microsoft auch einen Upgrade-Assistenten an, der den Nutzer durch den Installationsprozess leitet.

Einige der Laien-Forscher führen auch Experimente am eigenen Körper durch. Dabei kam es Anfang Mai 2017 zu einem ersten Todesfall.Manche Biohacker versuchen sogar, ihr Erbgut (DNA) zu manipulieren. Dabei bringen sie sich und andere in Gefahr. So wird die Kritik an dieser extremen Form der Manipulation immer lauter. Diskutiert wird schon seit längerem über eine Art "Hackerethik", zu der auch Risikominderung und öffentlicher Wahrnehmung gehören.

Der tragische Tod eines in der Branche bekannten US-Biohackers und Unternehmers am Sonntag wird dieser Diskussion neuen Schub verleihen - auch, wenn die genaue Todesursache noch nicht bekannt ist.Laut der Webseite "News2share" befand sich Traywicks Körper in einem Floating-Therapietank in einem Spa. Der Tod des 28-Jährigen wird zwar offiziell untersucht, aber die Polizei vermutet bisher keine Fremdeinwirkung.

Mitarbeiter des Biohacking-Unternehmens haben auch Experimente an sich selbst durchgeführt. Der 28-jährige Visionär war für seine umstrittenen Methoden und selbst gemachten Gentherapien bekannt.

“The most important thing in this work is that we demonstrate that there are many advantages for electronics and robotics to power themselves by extracting energy from materials in their environment,” James Pikul, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, told Digital Trends. “This approach is similar to the way we humans get energy. We have to eat fuel, breathe oxygen, and drink water. Our device enables the same capability for robots, except they ‘eat’ metal as a fuel, breathe oxygen, and drink water.”

Right now, the team’s prototype doesn’t resemble the form it could eventually take. It is currently a small hydrogel dragged behind a miniature motorized vehicle. With the hydrogel acting as an electrolyte, any metal surface that it comes into contact with acts as the anode of a battery. This lets electrons flow to the cathode and power the connected device. Different metals give the “metal-air scavenger” different energy densities, depending on their individual potential for oxidation. The vehicle also has a small reservoir that provides water to the hydrogel to stop it drying out.

“The ultimate goal is to make robots that can operate for considerably longer periods of time,” Pikul said. “There are some really impressive robots that people are making, especially at the centimeter scale, that have the potential to improve search and rescue, medical treatments, and industrial maintenance. But with today’s lithium-ion batteries they only last for five minutes. At the rate of current lithium-ion battery progress, it will be 16 years before they operate for 15 minutes.”

This approach would mean a robot could recharge by consuming part of a metal surface any time they were close to one (a small robot would need only the top 100 micrometers of a metal object to do so; a larger robot presumably a fair bit more.)

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Engineering and Applied Science may have come up with an answer though: Robots that could recharge by chowing down (in varying degrees) scrap metal as they move about. While that carries the faint whiff of robot cannibalism, it could, as strange as it might sound, result in robots that function more like biological beings.

The XPS 17 is shown next to it, featuring those same design choices. There are, however, no USB-A ports on either model. Like Apple, it looks like Dell might be going with all USB-C for both charging and data across the lineup. This lines up well with Intel’s announcement that Comet Lake-H would now support four Thunderbolt 3 ports on Windows 10 laptops.

Other companies have recently shown interest in reviving the market for 17-inch laptops. HP will be launching a new Envy 17, with a slim-bezel display and Intel’s latest 10th-generation processors. LG also has the Gram 17, which is one of the thinnest 17-inch laptops currently available.

Even Apple recently launched a big-screen laptop, retiring the 15-inch MacBook Pro in favor of a 16-inch model. Dell would certainly have some competition, to say the least.
