It's true that editing large amounts on text can be tedious on the iPad, but fortunately, Apple has enabled "trackpad mode" for the first time on iOS 12.With trackpad mode, you can easily scroll through text that you've typed and instantly jump from the top to the bottom of a page (or vice versa). 3. Keep your personal photos in private albums

There's a lot of joy to be had in passing the iPad around to show off your photos. But sometimes, we might not want everyone to see all of our business in one place. Thankfully, there's now a way to instantly hide your private photos by default into an album that's separate from your current camera roll.

To hide photos, simply open your Photos app and tap Select in the upper right-hand corner. Next, tap the photos you want to hide and select the Share button from the bottom left of the screen (it looks like a box with an arrow coming out). Select Hide from the menu that appears at the bottom of your screen. Now, your photos are hidden in a separate album for you to access at your convenience.

By default, you can easily split the keyboard of the iPad so each side retreats to the bottom corners of the device. To split your keyboard, simply hold the keyboard icon on the bottom right of the screen until a menu pops up. Without lifting your finger from the screen, move it up to Split and the keyboard will immediately separate. To put it back to normal, the process is the same except you'll select Merge instead.

The first clue that something might be wrong with your laptop's battery is that it doesn't last as long as it used to. Whereas once you got a full day out of it, perhaps now you're finding that it's running flat before you leave the office.

But this isn't a proper diagnosis, certainly not enough to justify a battery replacement, because numerous other variables can affect battery life (temperature, what software you have running, changes to battery saving settings, updated software, and so on).

Fortunately, Windows 10 (and earlier versions of Windows) offers in-depth data on laptop batteries. But unless you are a Windows power user, getting access to that data is a bit complex and cumbersome.Fortunately, there's a handy piece of free software that allows easy access to the current status and information about your battery data.

The software is called BatteryViewInfo by Nir Sofer (this software works on all versions of Windows from Windows 2000 to Windows 10), and it offers access to information such as battery name, manufacturer name, serial number, manufacture date, power state (charging/discharging), current battery capacity, fully charged capacity, voltage, and charge/discharge rate (note that some batteries may not offer up all this information).

If this number is over 500, the battery is getting old. If it is over 800, the battery is likely close to the end of its life. Over 1,000 and the battery is at the end of its life.Another two numbers to look at are Full Charged Capacity and Designed Capacity. The bigger the gap between these two numbers, the more worn the battery is. If Full Charged Capacity is below 80% Designed Capacity then the battery is likely showing signs of wear and requires replacing.Need to replace your laptop battery? Lenovo Ideapad g480 Battery

Intel’s Ice Lake mobile CPUs have only just launched, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get hyped up for what comes after that. Tiger Lake is the expected replacement architecture for Ice Lake, and it could bring with it major improvements in processor and graphics performance, as well as some baked-in features like new-gen wireless connectivity and much improved AI performance.

Intel’s leaked roadmap from earlier this year suggested Tiger Lake wouldn’t land until sometime in the first half of 2021, but that’s all changed. The first batch of Ice Lake-powered laptops are launching in the second half of 2019, with as many as 35 designs planned. With this accelerated release of Ice Lake, Intel has now pushed up Tiger Lake. Announced in April 2019 at an investor meeting, Tiger Lake will now debut in 2020 instead. Intel could give us the details of Tiger Lake at any point, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see our first glimpse at CES 2020.

Although there will be some performance enhancements over Ice Lake processors, Intel will again be restricting the Tiger Lake range to low-power Y and U series mobile CPUs. That means that prices for these CPUs won’t be super high, even at the high-end. 8th-generation Whiskey Lake U-series CPUs ran from $107 up to $409. Ice Lake CPUs are slightly more expensive, with the most costly (so far) Core i7-1065G7 priced at $426. We’d expect Tiger Lake to lie somewhere in the ballpark of those two generations’ pricing.

All of these chips will only be found in laptops and 2-in-1s, though, so these prices won’t be seen by the average buyer.Tiger Lake will be based on an enhanced 10nm process node named 10nm+. It will have some improvements over Ice Lake at an architectural level, with its Willow Cove cores enjoying an improved cache subsystem over the Sunny Cove cores found in Ice Lake CPUs. Beyond that, the details of the new “Willow Cove” core architecture are sparse.

Tom’s Hardware spotted a UserBenchmark listing for a Tiger Lake CPU in late July 2019. The unnamed processor had four cores and eight threads, with a 1.2GHz base clock and a 2.9GHz turbo clock. Those clock speeds feel a little low, but this is likely an early engineering sample so we would expect clock speeds to increase as we get closer to release hardware.

According to the UserBenchmark results, this unnamed chip was roughly as capable as an Intel Core i7-8559U quad-core CPU, and more than 25 percent faster than the quad-core AMD Ryzen 7 3750H in single and quad-core scenarios. It only lost out in multithreaded workloads by a single percent.

Intel has claimed that we can expect significant performance improvements in video encoding and particularly in small form factor systems, although as Tom’s Hardware points out, some of the numbers it quotes in relation to those improvements are a little lopsided.

As much as Tiger Lake will improve CPU performance over its predecessors, the more impactful generational leap may come in the form of its 12th-generation, Xe graphics. Tiger Lake will be the first generation of Intel CPUs to take advantage of its new Xe graphics architecture, the grander version of which will power Intel’s upcoming dedicated graphics cards.

Intel has promised huge performance improvements with Xe and Tiger Lake’s version will reportedly deliver up to four times the GPU performance of the UHD graphics found on 8th-gen Intel CPUs. That’s enough of an increase to expect smooth, 1080p gaming at 60 FPS in esports titles and older AAAs.

Two big enhancements that Intel has been keen to talk about with Tiger Lake are how it will affect wireless networking and AI development. Performance on the latter will reportedly increase by 2.5-three times under Tiger Lake. When combined with Tiger Lake’s low power requirements, this could make it a great chip line for small, but powerful internet of things devices.

As for Wi-Fi, the sixth generation (802.11.ax) will be natively supported by Tiger Lake, giving users access to super high-speed data transfers, better performance on busy networks, improved latency, and a reduction in power draw. That should equate to better connection speeds and longer battery life for Tiger Lake devices. But all that is launching with 2019’s Ice Lake.

Intel’s Ice Lake CPUs include the greatest collection of hardware fixes for mainstream processors yet seen from Intel, and Tiger Lake is expected to improve upon that with further security features. We don’t have any firm details on what variants of Spectre will be protected against with a new line of CPUs, but we would expect a greater number of hardware protections against additional variants. Perhaps including the same V3A Rogue System protections we saw in the Cascade Lake generation of Xeon CPUs.

TOSHIBA Satellite C645 Battery

REPTILE THEFT ATTEMPT A man who tried to steal reptiles early Saturday morning from the East Bay Vivarium has been charged with commercial burglary, according to police and court records online. Police responded to the beloved Fourth Street-neighborhood reptile shop just before 4:20 a.m. when the burglar alarm went off. When they arrived, the door was open and a window had been smashed. When they searched the business, they “found a suspect who was apparently trying to take reptiles,” police said in a statement. Police arrested 27-year-old Kevin Jerome Green, address unknown, on suspicion of burglary. Green was released on his own recognizance, according to court records online, and is scheduled to enter a plea Aug. 19 at the René C. Davidson Courthouse in Oakland.

LAPTOP ROBBERY A robber punched a 24-year-old Berkeley man and stole his laptop at Alchemy Café on July 25 between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., authorities report. The man was working on his computer inside the coffee shop, at 1741 Alcatraz Ave. (near Adeline Street) when a stranger ran inside and grabbed his computer. The stranger ran outside, but the laptop owner chased him and confronted him near King and 63rd streets: “The suspect refused to give the laptop back and punched the man’s face — leading to a struggle for the laptop. During the struggle, the suspect knocked the man to the ground and again punched him. The suspect then ran away,” police said. The robber was described as a black man, 18-25 years old, 6 feet 3 inches tall with a skinny build, wearing a hooded top with sagging pants.

LAPTOP ROBBERY ATTEMPT A short time later, two people tried to steal laptops from customers at Romeo’s Coffee, at 2499 Telegraph Ave. (near Dwight Way). Just before noon July 25, the pair ran into Romeo’s and each grabbed a laptop from a customer. When they tried to run off, however, a customer tackled one of the would-be thieves, police said. The other person got away. When police arrived, they arrested the 15-year-old Richmond boy who had been held by customers. Both laptops were recovered. KTVU obtained security video from the coffee shop robbery attempt and published it last week.

ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON Police responded to Berkeley’s Pathways homeless shelter at 1601 Second St. on July 22 for a report of a fight between two people that involved a metal bar, police report. When they arrived at 8:40 a.m., “they learned that two had been involved in an argument when the suspect left briefly to later return with a metal bar. The suspect swung the metal bar at the victim (a 26-year-old man)—striking the man’s back.” Police spoke with witnesses and arrested a 39-year-old woman with no known address. The woman does not appear to have been charged and is no longer in custody, according to Alameda County court records online.

ROBBERY That same day just before 11:30 p.m., a 20-year-old Berkeley man was walking at Euclid Avenue and Virginia Street when someone approached him from behind. The stranger grabbed the pedestrian by his shoulders and pulled off his backpack. After taking the bag, the robber ran to a nearby dark-colored vehicle and drove off. Witnesses described the robber as black, 6’1”-6’2” tall with a thin build, wearing dark pants and a dark hooded top.

SEXUAL ASSAULT ARREST A man was asleep in a tent in downtown Berkeley on July 24 at 5 a.m. when a woman went inside and sexually assaulted him, police report. After investigating, police identified a 48-year-old woman the next day on suspicion of oral copulation and probation violation. She is no longer in custody and charges do not appear to have been filed.

ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON On July 25 at 3:30 a.m., police responded to Channing Way and Fourth Street for a disturbance between two neighbors who live in tents in the area. According to police, “The suspect entered her neighbor’s tent to tell her neighbor (a 51-year-old man/address unknown) to turn down the music. When the man zipped up his tent with the suspect outside of it, the suspect cut the man’s hand with a razor.” Officers arrested a 25-year-old woman, address unknown, on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and violation of probation. She is no longer in custody and does not appear to have been charged.

The men first tried to rob a man and woman who ran away from them, then targeted and successfully robbed a man who was alone nearby. At about 3:40 a.m., police responded to a robbery attempt in the 2400 block of Bancroft Way (near Dana Street): A 21-year-old Berkeley man and a 23-year-old Berkeley woman “reported being chased by two suspects,” police said in a Nixle alert. “The man and woman were able to run away from the suspects before there could be any confrontation.” Ten minutes later, however, three people confronted a 56-year-old Berkeley man while he was in an off-street parking lot in the 2500 block of Durant (near Telegraph Avenue). One of the men pointed a gun at the 56-year-old and took his phone, wallet and money. The robbers, described as black men in their 20s, standing 6 feet 1 inch tall with thin builds, drove off in a light-colored vehicle, police said.

SEXUAL BATTERY SERIES LEADS TO CHARGES A 24-year-old Berkeley man has been charged in connection with a sexual battery series in July, authorities report. Between Thursday, July 14, and Sunday, police say a man on a bicycle approached five separate women and grabbed them by their buttocks. On Sunday, police arrested William Sanchez-Gomez on suspicion of sexual battery. Police say they spotted Sanchez-Gomez riding his bike near Sacramento Street and Dwight Way at about 6:15 p.m. and arrested him.

The first incident took place July 14 at 9:40 a.m. in the 1900 block of Channing Way (near Shattuck Avenue). The July 25 incident took place at 1:40 p.m. near Francisco and Milvia streets. Two of the sexual batteries took place Friday, at 1:40 p.m. in the 1900 block of Hearst Avenue and at 5:45 p.m. at Hearst Avenue and Grant Street.

The final incident took place Sunday at 5:45 p.m. in the 2000 block of Blake Street (near Milvia Street). According to court papers, Sanchez-Gomez approached the woman from behind and “placed his hands” under her skirt, touching her on the skin. She screamed and chased the man, and later identified him during a line-up, according to court papers. Police did not release the ages or cities of residence of any of the women. They declined to do so due to the nature of the allegations.

According to court papers, Sanchez-Gomez was charged Wednesday in connection with two counts of sexual battery. He is no longer in custody and his next court date was not listed in records online. Police ask anyone with information to call the BPD Sex Crimes Unit at 510-981-5735.

VIOLENT ROBBERY A 32-year-old Oakland man was taken to the hospital with a head injury after a group of five men attacked him and another man in the Telegraph Channing Garage on July 25, authorities report. The attack happened as the two men walked into the garage, at 2450 Durant Ave., at 6:50 p.m.: “While walking from the elevator to their vehicle, 5 male suspects approached the two men and began punching them. When one of the men fell to the ground, the suspects began kicking him. The suspects took a cell phone and wallet and ran away after others in the garage noticed the attack,” said BPD in a prepared statement. Witnesses described one of the assailants as white, about 27 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall with a heavy build, blond hair, wearing a baseball cap and blue jeans. Witnessed described another suspect as a white or hispanic, about 27 years old, 6 feet tall, wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans. The other men were described as white and in their 20s.

To make room for everything, Acer shrunk the Right Shift key, misplaced the forward slash key, and moved a bunch of other keys to unusual locations. Like anything, you can get used to them given enough time, but the way Acer shifted things around means you’re looking at a longer than normal adjustment period, and if you’re someone like me who uses Right Shift as a push-to-talk key in Discord, you may have to completely rebind certain functions.

The last big effect of owning a Triton 900 is that it could turn you into a graphics snob. Even at its native 4K resolution (3841 x 2160) on ultra graphics settings, the Triton 900 averaged 55 fps in Far Cry 5. And because the Triton 900 has a G-sync display, even when you do dip below 60 fps, games continue to look smooth. Oh, those results were only with the Triton’s overclocking settings turned on Fast instead of Fastest.

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 4K and the highest graphics settings, the Triton wasn’t quite as impressive as it pumped out an average of 44 fps, but considering all the graphical effects like ray tracing available in that game, that’s still pretty solid. All told, Acer’s Predator Triton 900 is a bold attempt at expanding the boundaries of what a gaming laptop can be. It’s got class-leading specs combined with clever bonuses that make gaming on a laptop (even one that’s not all that portable) both easy and rewarding. But at the same time, to get the most out of Triton, you have to commit hard. With a starting price of $3,800, the Triton 900 is the exact opposite of an impulse purchase.

You’ll have to spend time getting used to quirks like its touchpad and keyboard, and spend energy supporting it by carrying around additional accessories like gamepads, heavy power bricks, and other peripherals. And with a price this high, I really would have liked to see a screen option with a 120Hz refresh rate. Still, the Triton 900 is undeniably a finely crafted premium machine, and it’s certainly earned its place as the flagship of Acer’s gaming laptop lineup.

For a long time, big gaming notebooks were just that: thick, heavy, and more powerful versions of standard laptops, even laptops as ridiculous as the Acer Predator 21X from back in 2017. But more recently, gaming notebook makers have been experimenting with more far-out designs like what we’ve seen from the Asus ROG Mothership—which looks like what you’d get if a Microsoft Surface and a Star Destroyer had a baby— and now this: the Acer Predator Triton 900.

Before you even open it, the Triton 900 appears more cut and chiseled compared to something like MSI’s GT75. Its exterior panels are made from machined aluminum, and despite weighing in at just under 10 pounds (9.92 to be exact), the Triton 900's body feels rock solid and doesn’t suffer from even a hint of flex.

But open up the Triton 900 and you’ll reveal its secret weapon: a 17.3-inch 4K touchscreen that can rotate almost a full 180 degrees inside its innovative frame. This means you can use transform the notebook into 4 modes. There’s traditional laptop mode, a sort of gaming mode enabled by tilting the display and pulling it forward, a presentation mode where the screen points in the complete opposite direction, and something that’s almost a full-blown tablet mode, but not quite.

The first position is self-explanatory, while the second one is a great option for gamers who sit like Overwatch pro Dafran, with their noses 6 inches or so away from the screen. But my favorite transformation is something I’ve nicknamed battleship mode, as it basically allows the Triton 900 to become a high-powered mobile all-in-one.

By fully rotating the screen into presentation mode and then positioning the laptop so that its deck and guts sit behind the screen, you can attach an external keyboard and mouse and get a better gaming experience than a lot of custom gaming desktops. The Triton 900 has a plethora of ports including two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, dedicated headphone and mic jacks, and Ethernet, not to mention full-size connectors for both HDMI and DisplayPort.

The only thing that really takes away from battleship mode is the placements of the Triton 900's power port, which is smack dab in the middle of the laptops backside. It sticks out and prevents you from pushing a keyboard closer to the screen. And if you’re thinking of gaming without being plugged into an outlet, you might want to reconsider. On our video rundown test, the Triton 900 lasted just two hours and five minutes on a single charge. That means getting through even one round of Apex Legends on battery power alone could be real dicey, though that shouldn’t really be a surprise on a laptop like this.

The only mode that comes up short is tablet mode, because the Triton 900's hinge frame comes with two small tabs that prevents the display from rotating a full 180-degrees. That means the Triton 900's screen still has a slight tilt when laid flat, which makes it closer to something like the easel mode you get with a Microsoft Surface.

Of course, all this comes with a price, both practically and financially. The Triton 900 starts at around $3,800 for an Intel Core i7-9750H CPU, 32GB of RAM, 1TB SSD, and an Nvidia RTX 2080 GPU. And if you opt for one with a Core i9 processor similar to what we have in our review model, the price jumps up to just shy of $5,000. Yikes.

That said, the Triton 900's biggest burden may not even be an economic one. Owning a laptop this big and powerful isn’t like deciding what color shirt to wear, it’s a lifestyle. You have to go to the gym so you can properly carry the Triton 900 from one place to another without feeling sore the next day. The laptop alone weighs just under 10 pounds, while its power brick adds another three and half pounds. The only real concession to portability Acer makes on the Triton 900 is not having to lug around dual power bricks, which sometimes happens on monsters like the MSI GT75.

You may also need to get a new bag, because the Triton 900 doesn’t even come close to fitting in my everyday carry messenger bag. In fact, there are some backpacks that can’t even accommodate the Triton 900's dimensions, not to mention any other gamer gear you might want to lug around like headphones, mouse, and keyboard.

Speaking of mice, while most self-respecting PC gamers wouldn’t dream of playing even casual titles with a laptop’s built-in touchpad, it’s an especially bad idea on the Triton 900. In order to make room for the lights and glass window that lets you see inside the Triton 900's case, Acer had to shift the laptop’s touchpad to the right of the keyboard, which didn’t leave the Triton 900 with a lot of space. The touchpad is seriously skinny, and while it does have discrete buttons for left and right clicks, it still feels cramped.

In this case Lenovo opted to send a top-of-the-line ThinkPad X1 Carbon, leaving me with the only decision: which display panel to choose. In my eyes, the 4K display with Dolby Vision HDR and 500 nits of brightness is the right one for me. The other option is the non-touch, full-HD with 400 nit display. I was warned that the 4K panel could slash battery life to about half compared to the FHD panel. I quickly did the math: under a synthetic battery life benchmark test, the full-HD yielded 18.3 hours, so half that still netted 8 to 9 hours.

Am I regretting my decision? No, and that’s an emphatic no. For a start, the latest-gen X1 supports rapid charging, similar to most smartphones nowadays. At 80%, the X1 fully charged in under 16-minutes with the included 65-watt charger; that’s not bad at all. I noticed that even at 50% brightness, the battery life is going to take a big hit. Within under an hour, the battery meter already dropped to 90%. Yikes! I’m fully committed so there’s no turning back now. Opting for the best display offered on the X1 will also set you back $269.

There’s also some chatter and concerns about app-scaling on the 4K display. As far as I can see, there aren’t any rough edges or blocky-looking rendering. Browsing through Windows’ settings, the recommended scaling of text, apps, and other items should be set to 300%, but I found that 200% provides the best balance. Of course, what’s best for you will depend on your eyesight, but I definitely prefer having the choice in hardware and software.

For most buyers, the 14” FHD with 1920 x 1080 with or without multi-touch capability is more than adequate. It’s the only panel Lenovo offer with touch, too, and if you want Lenovo’s new PrivacyGuard for screen security feature, FHD is your only option. Stepping up to the WQHD gets you a 2560 x 1440 IPS glossy multi-touch display which is what I had on the gen-6 X1. I found the app-scaling rendered text too small for my eyes, and I wasn’t a fan of the 16:9 aspect ratio.

An IR camera with Windows Hello support comes standard with the 4K panel, and is optional with the other displays. It’s something sorely lacking on the outgoing model, even though it was available on the ThinkPad X1 Extreme, so I’m delighted to see it spread to the new X1 Carbon.

Do I miss not having multi-touch? Yes and no. There are times when it’s just more convenient to poke at the display; such as being in a tight space on an airplane. However, for anyone with OCD, the biggest drawback is getting the display all smudgy. I found that even with the ThinkPad X1 Extreme with a 4K display and multi-touch, I didn’t use the feature often enough to make this a must-have. At the end of the day, your mileage may vary. The idea of having this feature is nice but not necessary.

Living with less than stellar laptop speakers isn’t the end of the world and shouldn’t deter one from a major purchasing decision. That said, the speaker placement and sound quality of the outgoing model led to less than desirable performance.

Thankfully Lenovo heard our feedback. Repositioning the button and port layout – in particular the power button, which is now much smaller and has been shifted to the right-hand side, next to one of two USB-A ports – has cleared up prime real-estate for better speakers. Right below the display are dual Dolby Atmos speakers, for example, which work alongside two front-facing top-firing tweeters and the down-firing woofers underneath. The result is a far more immersive sound experience.

The other feature I’m jumping for joy over are the four far-field microphones. The two microphones placed at the top are perfect for voice commands, conference calls, and – in my case – recording meetings and press conferences for real-time voice transcription.

I’m in three to four meetings, product briefings, and press conferences a week. That’s a ton of information to capture, so I heavily rely on real-time voice transcription to keep everything organized. The four 360-degree far-field mics do a great job capturing audio from up to 10-feet away, in my experience. Even if you’re not recording meetings, the system is perfect for Alexa or Cortana for search queries, controlling the smart home, and other features.

In some instances where the speaker is too far away, I’m able to take advantage of the 3.5mm combo headphone jack and TRRS mic input. Utilizing the portable Rode Go Wireless microphone system still allows me to capture clear and crisp audio. Not only that, I can finally use my custom in-ear monitor headphones, too!

Das Display lässt sich mit einer Hand leicht öffnen. Die nicht abgerundeten Kanten des Gehäuses fallen jedoch unangenehm auf, gerade wenn die Handballen beim Tippen auf der Oberfläche liegen. Letztendlich hinterlässt die Ergonomie des Medion-Notebooks aber doch einen guten Eindruck.

Mit dem mickrigen 47-Wattstunden-Akku des Medion Erazer X15805 kommt man nicht weit – im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Im Videotest mit mittlerer Display-Helligkeit schafft das Notebook nur knapp die 4 Stunden, bei simuliertem Workload hielt es gerade 02:36 Stunden durch. Selbst in der Riege der stromhungrigen Gaming-Laptops ist das enttäuschend. Das Erazer ist mit seiner Größe und dem Gewicht von 2,1 Kilogramm eigentlich ein gutes Mobilgerät, die Akkulaufzeit degradiert es aber doch zum stationären Desktopersatz. Die Mobilität werten wir insgesamt nur als „befriedigend“.

Das Medion Erazer X15805 (Artikelnummer 30026616) gibt es für rund 2.300 Euro zu kaufen (zum Preisvergleich). Für die gebotene Leistung ist das ein guter Preis. Die Leistung, das Display und auch die Ergonomie überzeugen, die Ausstattung ist sogar die beste im Test. Abgesehen von der Mobilität bekommen Sie beim Erazer ein ausgewogenes Gerät – es glänzt nicht mit der Mega-Performance für Gaming, Sie können das Notebook aber auch gut für Office- und Kreativanwendungen nutzen.

Lenovos Mittelklasse-Gaming-Notebook bringt dank Core-i5-9300H-Prozessor und GeForce-GTX-1660-Ti-GPU alle aktuellen Computerspiele flüssig auf den matten 17,3-Zoll-Bildschirm (144 Hz, FHD, IPS). Eine Wartungsklappe ermöglicht den problemlosen Tausch von Arbeitsspeicher und Speichermedien. Alternativ ist das Notebook mit einem GeForce-GTX-1650- oder einem GeForce-RTX-2060-Grafikkern zu bekommen. Zu den Konkurrenten zählen Geräte wie das Schenker XMG Core 17, das MSI GP75 Leopard 9SD, das Dell G7 17 7790 und das Gigabyte Sabre 17-W8.

Das Medion Erazer X15805 kann sich im Test fast mit den besten Gaming-Notebooks messen. Dank Core-i9-Prozessor und RTX-2070-Grafik in der Max-Q-Bauweise bietet das Gerät nicht nur Gaming in stabilen Bildraten, sondern kommt auch mit Office- und Kreativanwendungen zurecht. Zudem helfen das gute Display und die exzellente Ausstattung der Wertung. Wegen der enttäuschenden Akkulaufzeit ist das Notebook aber mehr ein Desktopersatz als ein Mobilgerät. Der Preis ist vergleichsweise fair.

Medion hat seine Gaming-Notebooks mit den neuen RTX-Grafikkarten von Nvidia bestückt und bietet auch in der aktuellen Generation eine Reihe unterschiedlich starker Geräte an. Wir hatten mit dem Medion Erazer X15805 das leistungsstärkste und teuerste Modell der 15-Zöller im Test (zum Preisvergleich). Damit liefert das deutsche Tochterunternehmen des chinesischen Herstellers Lenovo High-End-Power ab. Das liegt vor allem an der guten Hardware, speziell „aufgemotzt“ hat Medion sein Gaming-Notebook nicht.

Die Hardware steckt in einem Standard-Gehäuse, wie wir es fast identisch zuletzt auch beim Gaming-Notebook Schenker XMG NEO 15 (zum Test) gesehen haben. Ein Nachteil ist das nicht, denn das Aluminium-Case ist hochwertig und stabil. Wie beim Schenker wurde aber wenig Wert auf abgerundetes Look & Feel gelegt, die scharfen Ecken und Kanten des Medion Erazor sind durchaus spürbar. An anderer Stelle setzte der Hersteller aber auf bessere Lösungen, so machen die Lüfter der Kühlung weniger Lärm.

In Hinsicht auf die Performance reiht sich das Medion Erazer X15805 genau dort in die Bestenliste ein, wo wir das Gaming-Notebook erwartet hatten: Durch den starken Intel Core i9-8950HK mit 2,9-GHz-Standard-Takt und 4,8 GHz Boost gibt es bei den Produktivitäts-Benchmarks Spitzenergebnisse. Der Grafikchip Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q mit 8 GByte VRAM eignet sich super für Gaming bei Full-HD-Auflösung – passend zum 1080p-Display mit 144 Hz. Mit einem RTX 2080 Max-Q, wie er beispielsweise im Dell Alienware m15 (zum Test) steckt, nimmt es das Medion-Notebook natürlich nicht auf. Die Leistung überzeugt dennoch.

Grundsätzlich gibt es bei der Performance von Gaming-Notebooks immer mehrere Faktoren zu beachten: So zeigt sich in unseren Spiele-Tests, dass das Medion Erazer X15805 im Vergleich mit einem ähnlich ausgerüsteten 17-Zoll-Notebook weniger Bilder pro Sekunde (fps) darstellt. Das liegt an der effektiveren Kühlung in den größeren Geräten – ist aber Jammern auf hohem Niveau: Ob Sie nun in FarCry 5 statt 90 fps nur 85 fps geboten bekommen, merken Sie eher nicht. Schenker hat seinen 15-Zöller mit RTX 2070 Max-Q speziell optimiert und holt teilweise 10 fps mehr aus der Hardware heraus als Medion. Insgesamt bekommen Sie aber beim Erazer eine Spitzenleistung.

Das Display des Medion Erazer X15805 bewerten wir als „sehr gut“. Es setzt zwar in keiner Kategorie eine neuen Top-Wert, erweist sich aber durch die Bank als solide. Die Blickwinkel-Stabilität des IPS-LC-Panels ist gut, der zu 95 Prozent dargestellte Standard-RGB-Farbraum hervorragend und die Bildwiederholrate von 144 Hertz absolut spieletauglich. Die von uns gemessene maximale Helligkeit von 298 Candela pro Quadratmeter ist prima. Lediglich der Schachbrett-Kontrast von 149:1 liegt im Vergleich zu anderen Gaming-Notebooks deutlich unter dem Durchschnitt. Bei dunklen Szenen in PC-Spielen kann das auffallen. Grundsätzlich gibt es an dem 15,6-Zoll-Display aber nichts auszusetzen.

Bei der Ausstattung bekommt das Medion Erazer X15805 die Höchstwertung unter den Gaming-Notebooks unserer Bestenliste. Bis auf Kleinigkeiten bleiben hier keine Wünsche offen. Besonders auffällig ist der üppige Speicher: Zur 512 GByte großen SSD in der schnellen M.2-Bauweise gibt es eine 2 TByte große HDD-Festplatte dazu. So viel Platz bietet kaum ein anderes Gaming-Notebook. Zusätzlich bekommen Sie ein Lesegerät für SD-Speicherkarten alle gängigen Formate. Ein optisches Laufwerk fehlt wie bei so gut wie allen Gaming-Notebooks der letzten Jahre – das ist also normal.

Auf der linken Seite bietet das Chuwi MiniBook einen USB 3.0 Anschluss, einen Mini-HDMI Anschluss und sogar einen USB Typ C Anschluss, und ja er ist voll funktionsfähig. Somit können die Anschlüsse über einen USB-C Dock erweitert werden, bzw. das Chuwi MiniBook auch stationär mit Monitor, Tastatur und Maus genutzt werden. Auf der rechten Seite befinden sich ein USB 2.0 Anschluss, eine Kopfhörerbuchse und ein Micro-SD Slot. An der Unterseite befindet sich ein kleiner, mit einer Schraube verschlossener Schacht, unter dem sich ein M.2 Anschluss befindet. Der Speicher kann also auch mit einer SSD erweitert werden.

Das Chuwi MiniBook setzt auf 8“ großes Full-HD Display, das mit 1920 x 1200 Pixeln auflöst und damit ein Format von 16:10 besitzt. Das LCD-Display ist leider nicht matt und spiegelt gerade bei ungünstigen Lichtverhältnissen stark. Die maximale Helligkeit überrascht hingegen und liegt am hellsten Punkt bei 640 cd/m². Damit lässt sich auch draußen noch etwas auf dem Display erkennen. Die Helligkeit verteilt sich allerdings nicht gleichmäßig auf dem Bildschirm, was aber im realen Betrieb nicht erkennbar ist. Gemessen schwankt die Helligkeit allerdings doch etwas stärker, hauptsächlich auf der linken Seite des Displays, wo die Helligkeit im Durchschnitt zwischen 560 und 580 cd/m² liegt. Auch die Farbdarstellung wirkt lebendig. Das Touchpanel kann bis zu 10 Berührungspunkte gleichzeitig verarbeiten und reagiert recht flott auf jede Eingabe.

Das Display ist eines der Highlights des Chuwi und hat einen Klappradius von 360°. Damit lässt sich er Pocket PC entweder als Tablet oder eben als Mini-Laptop nutzen. Wer das Gerät über den Bildschirm bedienen, es aber nicht auf der Tastatur ablegen möchte, kann es im Tent-Modus verwenden. Der Inhalt des Displays passt sich dank Lagesensor an die Kopfüber-Position an. Dadurch lässt sich das „Tablet“ sowohl im Hoch- als auch Querformat nutzen. In Sachen Display macht Chuwi so gut wie alles richtig.

Die Farben sind kräftig, die Helligkeit ausreichend, die Auflösung hoch und der Touchscreen reaktionsschnell. Leider spiegelt das Display je nach Lichteinfall aber dann doch etwas stark, was ihm einen kleinen Minuspunkt einhandelt. Leistung und System Eingangs haben wir schon über die unterschiedlichen Ausführungen des Chuwi MiniBook gesprochen. Für den Test lag uns die Variante mit Intel Celeron N4100 und 8 GB LPDDR4 RAM vor. Dem MiniBook stehen für Windows und die Daten 128GB eMMC 5.1 Speicher zur Verfügung. Der Speicher leistet beim Lesen maximal 233 MB/s beim Schreiben maximal 212 MB/s, was ein solider Wert ist. Schaut man sich allerdings die geringen Aufpreise für die Add-On SSDs der Indiegogo Kampagne an, hätte man auch gleich auf den doch langsameren eMMC Speicher verzichten können. Wie schon erwähnt lässt sich der Speicher erweitern, dabei kann man entweder auf eine Micro-SD Karte oder eine SSD zurückgreifen, die über den M.2 Anschluss angeschlossen werden kann.

Das der Intel Celeron N4100 keine Bäume ausreißt wissen wir schon von anderen Testgeräten. Der Quad-Core reicht für Standardnutzung wie Officeanwendungen und Surfen aus und ist auch in der Lage anspruchslose Spiele wie Hearthstone oder MTG Arena relativ flüssig wiederzugeben. Allerdings dreht der kleine Lüfter dann völlig durch. Läuft der Prozessor auf Hochtouren, kommt der kleine Lüfter kaum mit dem Kühlen hinterher und ist unerträglich laut und nervend. Aufgrund der leider nicht allzu optimalen Kühlleistung wird das Gerät dabei trotzdem sehr warm.

Die Leistung des Geräts reicht für alltägliche Aufgaben aus, besonders viel zumuten darf man ihm allerdings nicht, was unter normalen Umständen auch in Ordnung geht. Dass der Lüfter allerdings so unerträglich laut wird, sobald nur minimal etwas mehr Leistung benötigt wird, finde ich persönlich unattraktiv. Das Chuwi MiniBook wird mit einem bereits aktivierten Windows 10 Home ausgeliefert. Windows läuft auf dem Pocket PC einwandfrei und gibt kaum Anlässe zur Kritik. Einzig und allein die Anpassung von Programmfenstern an das Display funktioniert nicht immer und kann dazu führen, dass benötigte Bedienelemente nicht erreichbar sind. Dies war bei den Benchmark-Programmen (3D Mark, PCMark) beispielsweise der Fall. Ansonsten wechselt Windows zuverlässig beim Klappen des Displays über 180° in den Tablet-Modus oder frägt nach ob in diesen gewechselt werden soll. Der Virenscan blieb ergebnislos und auch sonst ist nichts auf dem Chuwi MiniBook vorinstalliert. Das deutsche Sprachpaket war bereits vorhanden, allerdings würde ich die Nutzung des englischen Tastatur-Layouts jedem empfehlen, da die Sonderzeichen hier anders verteilt wurden als bei einer Standardtastatur – ansonsten tippt man blind. Am linken Rand des Displays sind ein Mikrofon und eine 2MP Kamera angebracht. Beides erweist sich im Test allerdings als Technik aus dem letzten Jahrzehnt und ist nur für gelegentliche Videotelefonie gerade so geeignet. Die Auflösung der Kamera beträgt auch nur im 4:3 Modus 1,9 MP und bei 16:9 sind es gerade mal 0,9 MP. Das Bilder oder Videoaufnahmen dabei niemals scharf werden können und gut aussehen, brauch ich an dieser Stelle wohl kaum näher zu erwähnen.

Das Chuwi MiniBook lässt sich nicht nur via Touchscreen oder Tastatur bedienen, sondern besitzt auch einen sogenannten Track-Point – für ein Touchpad war kein Platz mehr. Die Maus wird mit dem Track-Point bedient und das gelingt auch präzise. Trotzdem muss man um von einem Bildschirmende zum Anderen zu kommen zwei Mal absetzen. Ein Doppelklick lässt sich mit dem Track-Point ebenfalls durchführen, einen Rechtsklick allerdings nicht.

Likewise, for productivity laptops that are competitively priced, most mainstream offerings no longer suffer from poor viewing angles or poor color reproduction, with many models using IPS panels which guarantees some degree of quality.

Depending on use, some people still prefer to use a mouse tethered to their laptop, but a touchpad remains essential for portability. Touchpads have improved substantially over the years, and depending on how old your laptop is, you might find some of the newer technology of benefit.

Touchpads used to have buttons below the touch sensor to replicate the left and right buttons of a mouse. This design was clunky to use. Dragging and dropping required either the use of two hands or some funky finger contortions. Today, almost all laptops incorporate multi-touch sensors and numerous gesture controls that are well suited to the improved hardware and software in recent designs.

Apple led the way on reliable touchpads that work well and have a larger surface dedicated to it, but most other manufacturers have followed suit to bring outstanding implementations. For those who rely on the touchpad as their pointing device, the poor designs of yesteryear compared to today’s standard can make or break productivity (or lose your need for an external mouse).

Keyboards have not seen the same leaps, with manufacturers continually looking to slim things down. Chiclet keyboards are prevalent among laptop makers and have become virtually silent. They tend to be responsive and allow for thin profiles, though, this comes with a trade-off. They tend to have less key travel and tactile feedback, which is not ideal in some situations such as gaming. Although, gaming laptops have continued to evolve and have put out proper countermeasures even if the idea of true mechanical keyboards in laptops didn’t take off.

CPUs: Performance vs. Efficiency

We won’t delve deep into laptop CPUs since we have dedicated several articles to the topic, but we’d be remiss in not mentioning them if only for the fact that more current processors provide advantages that go beyond clock cycles. For an in-depth look at some of the newer laptop processors, check out some of our recent reviews, including this piece pitting Intel’s latest Core i7-9750H against the previous-gen i7-8750H -- these are two typical processors used in performance-oriented laptops.

Next-generation processors don’t provide the Moore’s Law speed jumps like they used to. Just as a comparison, let's look at the performance gap between the last three best performing laptop Core i7s.Let's compare the Core i7-6567U (Skylake), Core i7-7567U (Kaby Lake), and Core i7-8559U (Coffee Lake). Going from Skylake to Kaby Lake, i7 processors saw a 21-percent jump in performance, while the bump between Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake was a slightly better 35-percent increase. This larger jump was due in part to the transition from two to four cores. More significant, of course, is the jump from sixth to eighth generation — a 64 percent improvement.

Battery Life

Battery life improvements are also a factor to consider. While replacements for aging batteries cost less than a new laptop, you may benefit from the advanced technology used in more recent batteries. Most manufacturers switched from nickel–cadmium (NiCad) and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) to lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries years ago. Li-ion cells provide longer life without some of the problems of older power sources such as the memory effect and overcharging issues.

Even though your current notebook probably has a Li-ion battery, the technology has also seen improvements where the cells charge faster and last longer. You no longer have to worry about the memory effect degrading your battery’s performance when partially charging.

However, there are other good reasons to look at getting a new laptop to replace your existing two- to five-year-old unit that go beyond performance alone.

Manufacturers are continually working on ways to entice consumers into upgrading to a newer model, but that's not it. In recent years there have been actual hardware developments and new trends in modern laptops that when looked at together can make for a compelling argument. We've experienced some of these leaps and that's what inspired the idea for this article.

In addition to year-on-year tweaks to make the latest laptop models more attractive, many technologies that used to be reserved for high-end models have permeated to the mainstream, including much better displays and resolutions, improved hardware efficiency and battery life, and overall better build quality even on lower price points.

It used to be that upgrading to a laptop with a bigger display meant taking on extra weight and a larger overall footprint. These days that might not necessarily be the case depending on what you currently have. Thinner bezels are now standard which combined with more lightweight hardware can potentially allow a user to upsize their display a couple of inches without increasing much of the bulk.

To use a practical example, the last time I upgraded my personal laptop I went from a 2012 11-inch MacBook Air to a 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro (same design as the current outgoing model). Gaining two diagonal inches increased my carry weight by about half a pound. In terms of footprint, the MacBook Pro is only 0.17 inches wider and 0.8 inches deeper. The size/weight comparison was stunning. Most popular 15-inch laptops have also benefited from ultra-thin bezels, which results in what used to be 14-inch or less kind of footprint.

For most, 4K on a 13- to 15-inch screen is overkill and mostly unnecessary. However, you don’t need to go all the way to 4K for gaining all that clarity and sharpness of text. It’s all about high DPI, and for these smaller screens, 1080p resolutions and above should do the trick. It makes a world of difference compared to lower resolution displays, plus operating systems and software applications have finally reached the point of widespread support for high DPI.

Zur Herstellung werden seltene und teure Rohstoffe wie Lithium und Seltene Erden benötigt.

Die benötigten Rohstoffe werden in Drittländern ohne Rücksicht auf die Umwelt und unter menschenrechtlich bedenklichen Bedingungen gefördert.

Durch die begrenzt verfügbaren Rohstoffe ist eine schnelle und flächendeckende Umstellung auf E-Autos praktisch unmöglich.

Li-Ion-Akkus können auch explodieren.

Akkus zu Entsorgen/Recyceln ist wegen der verbauten Materialien aufwendig und teuer.

Die Infrastruktur des Stromnetzes muss für eine flächendeckende Elektromobilität erst noch angepasst werden, da es sonst zu Netzüberlastungen kommt.

Selbst wenn Akkus auf den Markt kommen, die in nur wenigen Minuten voll geladen werden könnten, wäre dafür eine extrem hohe Leistung seitens der Lade-Infrastruktur nötig, was flächendeckend kaum machbar ist.

Im Endeffekt läuft es mit all diesen Schwierigkeiten darauf hinaus, dass Li-Ion-Akkus, wie sie heute gebaut werden, keine Lösung sind, sondern allerhöchstens eine Brückentechnologie, im schlimmsten Fall auch nur eine Sackgasse.

Sogenannte „Pocket-PCs“ sieht man nicht mehr all zu oft und auch wir hatten bisher nur einen Vertreter im Test. Chuwi war sich bei der Nachfrage wohl selbst nicht sehr sicher und hat deshalb das MiniBook über die Plattform Indiegogo finanzieren lassen. Zur Auswahl stehen dabei zwei verschiedene Modelle, die beide auf dem Papier schon deutlich besser abschneiden, als das bereits getestete One Mix Yoga aus der gleichen Geräte-Kategorie. Ob das Chuwi MiniBook aber tatsächlich besser ist und wie sich die Benutzbarkeit und Nützlichkeit im Alltag beweisen, erfahrt ihr im Testbericht.

Design und Verarbeitung Das Chuwi MiniBook gibt es in zwei unterschiedlichen Hauptausführungen, die sich hauptsächlich durch den Prozessor unterscheiden. Die teurere Variante bietet einen Intel m3-8100Y, ein Dual-Core mit maximaler Taktrate von 3,4 Ghz. Die integrierte Grafikeinheit (Intel UHD Graphics 615) hat eine maximale Taktrate von 900 Mhz. Unterstützt wird der Prozessor von 8GB LPDDR3 RAM, der fest verlötet und nicht erweiterbar ist. Allerdings kann gegen Aufpreis auch 16GB RAM integriert werden. Die günstigere Variante des MiniBook wird von einem Intel Celeron N4100 versorgt, einem Quad-Core mit maximal 2,4 Ghz. Die integrierte Grafikeinheit (Intel UHD Graphics 600) hat eine maximale Taktrate von 700 Mhz. Unterstützt wird der Prozessor hier von 8GB LPDDR4 RAM. Dieser kann allerdings nicht aufgestockt werden, was angesichts der allgemeinen Leistung des Gerätes in dieser Variante aber auch keinen Sinn machen würde. Abgesehen von RAM und Prozessor sind die Varianten aber vollständig gleich. Der Speicher kann bei allen Modellen auf bis zu 512 GB geupgradet werden.

Wenn ich unseren ehemaligen Kandidaten, das One Mix Yoga, neben das Chuwi MiniBook halte, ist das Geräte von One Netbook das deutlich Kompaktere. Das Chuwi MiniBook misst immerhin 208 x 135 x 19 mm und wiegt ganze 662g. Damit passt das Gerät leider in keiner meiner Hosentaschen oder in die Innentasche meines Sakkos, beim One Mix Yoga war das immerhin gerade so noch möglich. Trotzdem lässt sich das Chuwi MiniBook als sehr kompakt bezeichnen, wenngleich ich das Gewicht bei einer so geringen Größe als hoch empfinde. Das Gehäuse besteht komplett aus Aluminium und fühlt sich sehr wertig an. Auch die Verarbeitung ist top und es gibt keinerlei Mängel. Da sich das Display um 360° umklappen lässt, ist die Qualität der Scharniere sehr wichtig. Das Umklappen geht relativ schwer, man muss allerdings keine Gewalt anwenden. Die Scharniere machen einen sehr stabilen Eindruck und haben keinerlei Spiel. Das Display lässt sich vollständig umklappen und liegt auch auf der Rückseite komplett an und steht nicht ab.

Das Betriebssystem ist Windows 10 Pro, mit der Systemsoftware von Asus lassen sich daneben die Hardware-Profile und die RGB-Beleuchtung der Tastatur steuern. Für intelligente Grafik-Steuerung ist Nvidia Optimus einstellbar, die Software schaltet je nach Anforderung zwischen der On-Board-Grafik des Prozessors und der dedizierten Grafik des RTX-Chips um. Sie müssen sich aber zwischen Optimus und G-Sync entscheiden. Zwei 2,5-Watt-Lautsprecher im Gehäuse sorgen für annehmbaren Sound.

Die meisten Probleme beim Vorgänger des ROG Zephyrus S GX701GX hatten wir mit der Ergonomie. Insbesondere der Lärm des Gaming-Notebooks störte uns. Hier hat Asus nachgebessert. Unter Volllast produziert zwar auch das GX701GX ein lautes Rauschen, nervige Störgeräusche gibt es jedoch nicht. Das Betriebsgeräusch ist gleichmäßig und erträglich.

Tastatur und Mausersatz haben bedingt durch das Design die gleichen Einschränkungen wie schon beim Vorgänger: Die Positionierung der Tastatur am unteren Rand ist gewöhnungsbedürftig, kann aber auch nirgends anders sein, denn die hintere Hälfte des Gehäuses ist dem Kühlsystem vorbehalten. Da die Tastatur auf dem Akku liegt, gibt es nur einen sehr geringen Hubweg. Und auch wenn der Druckpunkt recht exakt ist, stellt sich kein besonders angenehmes Tippgefühl ein. Von einer Gaming-Tastatur ist diese Lösung weit entfernt.

Das Touchpad sitzt rechtsbündig an der Position des Nummernblocks und kann auch als solcher genutzt werden. Durch diese Doppelfunktion ist die Touch-Fläche nicht besonders groß und daher vor allem für Gaming-Zwecke zu schmal. Will man den Cursor weiter nach links bewegen, drückt man schnell aus Versehen auf Tasten, weil es keine echte Abgrenzung gibt. Gesonderte Maustasten gibt es nicht. Alles in allem eine erfinderische Designlösung – aber in der Benutzung nicht sehr bequem.

Das ROG Zephyrus S GX701GX „passt in die Tasche“ und lässt sich „problemlos transportieren“ – so bewirbt Asus sein Gaming-Notebook. Dafür ist der kleine Formfaktor in der Tat nützlich. Mit zwei Zentimetern ist das Gerät äußert dünn. Die Akkulaufzeit ist aber auch eher abgespeckt: Wir maßen 03:59 Stunden bei Video-Playback und 02:57 Stunden bei simuliertem Workload. Das ist selbst unter generell wenig sparsamen Gaming-Notebooks ein ziemlich mickriger Wert. Viel mobiles Gaming werden Sie also nicht genießen können, bevor das Notebook wieder an die Steckdose muss.

Beim Preis langt Asus ordentlich hin. Zum Testzeitpunkt gibt es das ROG Zephyrus S GX701GX-EV021R (Modellnummer 90NR00X1-M01390) für rund 3.200 Euro (zum Preisvergleich). Bei gleichstarken Alternativen von Dell und Lenovo kommt man meist günstiger weg und diese können auch bei der Ausstattung mehr bieten als das Asus-Notebook. Günstigere GX701-Modelle gibt es Wahlweise mit den Grafikchips GeForce RTX 2070 oder 2060. Wer nur auf die Performance in Spielen schaut und das Gaming-Notebook ohnehin kaum bewegt, der liegt beim GX701GX mit Sicherheit nicht falsch. Die ungewöhnliche Tastatur und das kleine Touchpad sind aber dennoch Gewöhnungssache.

Neue Akkutechnologie soll beinahe alle Probleme heutiger Li-Ion-Akkus ausmerzen – Der Durchbruch für E-Mobilität?

Heute mal was ganz anderes: Statt neuer Hardware möchte ich Ihnen eine vielversprechende und hoffentlich schon bald verfügbare Akkutechnologie vorstellen.

Schon klar: Allzu oft haben uns in der Vergangenheit Meldungen über bahnbrechende neue Energiespeicher das Blaue vom Himmel herunter versprochen, doch nie ist auch nur eines davon eingelöst worden. Stattdessen müssen wir uns bis heute mit der schon Jahrzehnte alten Lithium-Ionen-Technologie begnügen, die zwar kontinuierlich verbessert wurde, aber grundsätzlich keinen ausreichenden Wirkungsgrad liefert und zahlreiche Probleme mit sich bringt.

Bei unseren täglichen elektronischen Begleitern wie Smartphones, Notebooks, Tablets und neuerdings auch Smartuhren oder Kopfhörer haben wir uns fast schon damit abgefunden, diese täglich an einer Steckdose wieder aufladen zu müssen, was oft Stunden dauert. Viel schlimmer sieht die Situation aber bei der E-Mobilität aus, die uns gerne als die beste Möglichkeit verkauft wird, in kürzester Zeit von fossilen Brennstoffen wegzukommen und den Klimawandel zu stoppen. Doch dabei werden fast immer die vorhandenen Probleme mit der heute verfügbaren Akkutechnologie verschwiegen. Hier eine kleine Auflistung der größten Schwierigkeiten. Die ist primär auf E-Mobilität bezogen, betrifft aber in vielen Punkten auch unsere digitalen Gadgets:

Akkus haben eine geringe Energiedichte (MJ/kg) und sind daher in Bezug auf die mögliche Reichweite sehr schwer. (Hohe Reichweiten sind möglich, aber nur mit entsprechend großen, schweren, teuren Akkus.)

Das Aufladen dauert im Vergleich zu Verbrennern (inkl. Wasserstoff und Gas) sehr lang. Bei besetzten Ladestationen ist das ein umso größerer Nachteil.

Aufladen bis 100% dauert besonders lange. Daher wird bei den Ladezeiten oft nur die Dauer zur Aufladung bis 80% angegeben.

ichtig schick und richtig teuer: Das MacBook Pro 2019 ist ein echtes Edel-Notebook, selbst die kleinsten Modelle liegen schon weit über 1000 Euro. Was es für den üppigen Preis gibt, sagt der Test des aktuellen 13-Zoll-Modells von „Computer Bild“.

Das Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701GX kann im Test mit seiner Spitzen-Performance überzeugen. Dank Top-Prozessor und RTX-2080-Grafikchip bleiben beim Gaming kaum Wünsche offen. Auch das Display liefert tolle Bilder. Bei der Ausstattung hapert es jedoch und das ultradünne und leichte Gaming-Notebook zeigt Tücken im Design. Die Ergonomie hat Asus jedoch im Vergleich zum Vorgänger verbessert. Das ROG Zephyrus S GX701GX ist ein leistungsstarkes Gerät mit Abzügen im Drumherum. Im Video sehen Sie, worauf Sie beim Kauf eines Gaming-Notebooks achten müssen.

Asus hat beim ROG Zephyrus S GX701GX im Vergleich zum Vorgänger nachgebessert. Das große Verkaufsargument ist immer noch das „ultradünne Gaming-Notebook“. Vor allem bei der Ergonomie wurde nun einiges besser gelöst. Das grundsätzliche Design behielt Asus aber bei: Das Display ist beinahe randlos. Die perforierte Abdeckung des Kühlsystems nimmt so viel Platz am Gerätekörper weg, so dass die Tastatur sogar etwas beengt wirkt. Und beim Öffnen des Displays hebt sich die Bodenplatte, damit durch den Spalt die Heatpipes gekühlt werden. Das macht das Gerät dünn, kompakt und leicht.

Im ROG Zephyrus S GX701GX steckt die derzeit beste Hardware für Gaming-Notebooks. Das sorgt für eine exzellente Performance in Spielen, jedoch unterscheidet sich das Gerät damit nicht wesentlich von den anderen Spitzenmodellen. Der Prozessor ist ein Intel Core i7-8750H, die Grafiklösung eine Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 im Max-Q-Design für Laptops. Bei der Leistung sehen wir Asus grundsätzlich gleichauf mit Dells Alienware- und Lenovos Legion-Notebooks (zum Test) – in der absoluten Oberklasse.

Tatsächlich zeigte das 17-Zoll-Notebook Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701GX im Test das beste Ergebnis des synthetischen Gaming-Benchmarks 3DMark FireStrike: 18.026 Punkte im Vergleich zu den 17.292 Punkten des 15-Zöllers Dell Alienware m15 (zum Test). Effektiv geben sich die beiden Geräte im Spiele-Praxistest aber nichts: Bei unserem Referenzwert FarCry 5 im Ultra-Modus liegen sie gleichauf bei 93 Bildern pro Sekunde. Auch die übrigen Ergebnisse zeigen kaum Abweichungen. Zusammen mit den 16 GByte Arbeitsspeicher bekommen Sie Spitzen-Performance für Gaming, steigern lässt sich da aktuell nichts mehr.

In Hinsicht auf das Display bleiben die Asus-Gaming-Notebooks stark. Das GX701GX kommt mit einem 17-Zoll-Bildschirm und Full-HD-Auflösung, Asus bietet aber auch 15-Zoll-Geräte an. Das Display ist ein hervorragendes IPS-LC-Panel mit 144 Hertz Bildwiederholrate und einer Reaktionszeit von 3 Millisekunden. Unserer Messung nach wird der Standard-RGB-Farbraum zu 90 Prozent dargestellt. Der Schachbrett-Kontrast ist mit 206:1 sehr hoch, der derzeit zweitbeste Wert in unserer Bestenliste. Die maximale Helligkeit ist mit 274 Candela pro Quadratmeter ebenfalls gut, wenn auch kein Top-Ergebnis. Alles in allen sind das für Gaming-Anforderungen exzellente Werte, weitere Optimierung gibt es durch G-Sync-Support.

Die Ausstattung des ROG Zephyrus S GX701GX ist wie beim Vorgänger etwas dürftig. Asus scheint immer noch nicht zu wissen, wohin mit der Webcam. Zugunsten des randlosen Displays wanderte die Webcam beim ROG Strix Scar II (zum Test) in die untere Ecke. Nun ist sie ganz verschwunden: Beim GX701 liegt die Kamera als externes Zubehör bei, das man erst anschließen muss. Allzu praktisch ist das nicht. Auf einen Anschluss für Netzwerkkabel wurde verzichtet und auch ein SD-Kartenleser fehlt. WLAN im 802.11ac-Standard und Bluetooth 5.0 sind natürlich an Bord, auch eine Klinkenbuchse ist vorhanden.

Bei den USB-Anschlüssen fehlt dem GX701GX Thunderbolt 3 für die schnellste Datenübertragung, eine der beiden USB-Typ-C-Schnittstellen ist jedoch USB 3.1 Gen2 mit DisplayPort-Unterstützung und Ladefunktion. Die zweite Typ-C-Schnittstelle ist USB 3.1 Gen1. Daneben haben Sie zwei USB-3.1-Anschlüsse von Typ A zur Verfügung. Neben DisplayPort über USB-C können Sie einen externen Monitor über HDMI anschließen. Bei der Festplatte handelt es sich um eine SSD mit 1 Terabyte Speicher, das sollte für Spiele-Installationen ausreichen. Eine zusätzliche HDD ist nicht an Bord.
